Today is apparently Inventor's Day in Europe, which is a day set aside to celebrate all things independent and inventing. This is good, as we have a wiki page setting out all the things the commentors want invented. If anyone is good with a hammer and stuff, then dive right in! Meanwhile, here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • Mr C and myself met up with some Sidepodders at the Mercedes-Benz day yesterday. We had a fantastic day, so thanks go to Jackie for sorting out the tickets. There are tales to be told and pictures to be shared, so stay tuned for that. Although, if you want a sneak peak, there are some shots on drop.io that we uploaded throughout the day.
  • Meanwhile, it has been a quiet day in F1, but seeing Anthony Davidson behind the wheel yesterday started us pondering whether he will be racing next year. His final commentating duties for 5live did seem to contain a lot of goodbyes, and there are some new slots opening up on the grid. Where would he fit in?
  • James Allen had a piece on his website yesterday about Williams CEO Adam Parr and his thoughts that the era of manufacturer's is over. He would be one of the first to say that though, and I know the man has ruffled some feathers in the past. Do we think this is the case or is he just trying to promote his own team and their independent status for a change?

That should cover it for now. I can't quite believe it's Monday again, but there we go. Let us know how your weekend went, and as ever, I'll see you in the comments.

An Australian retail chain sells the most iTunes cards in the world! It happens to be the chain that I have a hand in managing the relationship between it and Apple. The article was written by Dave Richards apparently (because it's not possible there could be more than one).

Why is it MFC that the store is selling cards for an online shopping experience? Wouldn't it be more MFC if they sold online vouchers instead?

Zoe and I have just spent approx 4 hours buying a thing (entertainment unit) to put the new tv on when it arrives later in the week. There are some things that will still have to be done the traditional way because we can't yet holographically project images of furniture into the house

Alas, in th uk at least, working temperatures aren't a legal thing. They're just guidelines. The WHO recommends 24 as a max but it's not enforcable. There's a legal minimum though. Boooo for mean employers.

There's such a thing?! Back in our old office building, there was a thermometer. On average, the temperature is around 21, but on cloudy/rainy days, I've seen it plunge to as low as a winter-y 16. In a tropical country. :D

it regularly got over 30 when I worked in the kitchen, I could often be found hiding in the fridges. It was so nice of them to install a new aircon system after I left.

Joe talks about the win-win nature of a 20-race season.

Not that I think Christine will agree, but if it saves the BGP and gets us a French GP, it can't be all bad.

  • Journeyer09/11/2009 at 09:39

Not much to catch up on, as most people were at Brooklands. Tons of pics on the drop, though.

I would like Silverstone on the calendar, so whatever he has to do to fix that is fine by me.

The more races there are, the less we can do, but that doesn't affect the many people who would get to attend the race.

  • Nick09/11/2009 at 09:43

I don't know really. I was wondering about that. I mean it can't be all listen. If it's quiet people need to come up with something interesting to add I guess.

  • Journeyer09/11/2009 at 09:44

Hmmm. I would've thought that the sleeping pandas would've solved that. I guess a simple reminder to everyone will have to suffice.

On Fark.com they have ways of changing "first post" to other words automatically - could something like that be done on here and perhaps for swear words too? Perhaps we could come up with an alternate list for the swear words, followed by an automated reply that quotes the commentor and tells them they are on the naughty step?

  • Nick09/11/2009 at 09:44

We're working on the swearing thing.

Given how tight the calendar is right now, it might. I don't think the paddock would be so keen on the idea of 3 races in 3 weeks.

That's insane - they end up paying twice as much in ten years? What's the current level of inflation and how much would that be after 10 years? Can you drop the excel file?

Indeed. The 7 percent rate doesn't sound bad until you do the real maths.

  • Alex Andronov09/11/2009 at 09:59

    I believe you!

Indeed. I just thought some people Bernie probably wouldn't normally use RPIX (even though he should). He'd probably use plain RPI, but weirdly right at the moment they are the same although that's not set to last.

So in case Bernie was swinging through the comments and wanted to check the background I thought I'd add the link :)

  • RubberGoat (Gavin Brown)09/11/2009 at 10:01

That's insane - they end up paying twice as much in ten years?

Indeed. The 7 percent rate doesn't sound bad until you do the real maths.

Quick back of the fag packet calculations using your sheet and RPI says that Bernie is asking for 184% of the original fee in year 10 - whereas if he asked for RPI then he would only get 104% - so he is asking for 80% more!

No wonder this man is trying to get all the Grands Prix in new money countries if these are the 'easy' terms!!!

  • Alex Andronov09/11/2009 at 10:01

  • Nick09/11/2009 at 10:17

Does Inflation go up or down if the economy improves?

It has to go up... its curently effectivly stagnenet.

Governements try to control inflation by keeping it at about 2% for stable growth.

However the current crisis might suggest that this target was too low and 3% might be better.

  • Journeyer09/11/2009 at 10:18

i can confirm she does this, and sometimes a coat too.

still that isn't warm enough. she is quite odd y'know ;)

Christine, do you have bad circulation or something?

Ah yes... I think I have discovered the issue... She's a girl. Girls are normally cold...

I have a theory that I am working on that some people are much more sensitive to drafts than others. And often people of a female persuasion are more susceptible to said drafts.

So while the temperature in the room is fine, if there is a draft... your common or garden male will tend to think, "oh good - fresh air", whereas your female will say, "eh up? There's a draft in here... lets put the 'eating on!".

I say bring back the draft excluder!

  • Amy09/11/2009 at 12:22

  • me09/11/2009 at 12:23

    i may have uber-circulation

yesterday, in a field, i looked at five shivering people (two of which were men), and asked what the issue was? i was toasty at the time.

She doesn't - she has the same model of circulation as me, but a superior model (I have been known to wear waterproof coats in the middle of heatwaves...)

Correlation of this data to Alex's theory remains incomplete.

  • Alianora La Canta09/11/2009 at 12:29

Where I was working last week, there was a running joke that reception would always be freezing while the upstairs offices would be roasting. Simultaneously.

Needless to say, this caused a few minor disputes about whether and when to have the heater on or off. Fortunately, there are no settings on said heater to refine the amount of heat it kicks out into the system...

  • Amy09/11/2009 at 12:29

We are not allowed fans - they get confiscated!

in our office we all got told off for plugging in speakers for our mp3 players. we got told we are not allowed to "steal" power from the company. I think that must rule out fans too.

Where I was working last week, there was a running joke that reception would always be freezing while the upstairs offices would be roasting.

Mrs C once worked for a company that had very similar temperature strangeness. Her desk was near a very hot pipe so that she was always warm, even if the rest of the office was cold; and if they turned the heating on she would roast. Or something like that.

My home 'office' is on the north-westerly corner of the house so it gets very chilly in winter, even with thick socks, etc. What I really need is a cat to come in and deposit him/herself on my lap.

Trinidad Curry Duck yesterday – very tasty and spicy!

That sounds delicious. Well, we deviated from our favourite curry house because they don't deliver, and we didn't have time to sit and wait for a take-out because it was getting late and we had to get home to feed the cats.

Kendal mint cake is a bit gross. If i had any i'd happily give it away... We have nice local fudge or many organic farm products.

I don't like it either but it was the only authortatively Cumbrian thing I could think of in a flash!

Could she not steal something from M-Sport (who run the Ford Focus WRC cars)?

  • Nick09/11/2009 at 13:31

I'm not off to Harrods... If you wanted a present you should have reminded me. I'd hav brought something cumbrian down with me.

I hate this train so much! It was late. Now the announcing man won't stop announcing!

I have been plagued by delays every day for two weeks and it's driving me mad. Things got too much yesterday when I was trying to get to my mate's house in the suburbs of Copenhagen. It takes just over an hour to travel from Odense to Copenhagen (150km), yet it took another hour to travel the 15km to his house, because there were lineworks and no replacement buses!

So this morning while commuting to work, I was very happy to see that someone had sprayed 'F--- DSB' on the side of one of the subway trains - took a pic and everything :D

  • Stuart C09/11/2009 at 13:53

    But its his job

He probably has to hit various announcement benchmarks set out in his job description ("'Announcing man' Your function is to announce..." etc)

No, you are using stuff bought and optimised for XP and windows products - essentially the wrong way around. Had you started clean with a Linux system you would have bought a scanner accordingly.

The very fact you have to think about that is central to the problem. Until the OS becomes user friendly it is largely useless to people like me

  • Alex Andronov09/11/2009 at 14:55

Well that too depending on which ones you use.

Yeah... I meant what they were aiming at, but point taken about Xerox.

I remember reading an interview with Steve Wozniak when he was talking about their trip around the Xerox park. They were invited by the engineers because Xerox were refusing to put their ideas into production.

The legend was that on that day they showed the Steves 3 things. They were the mouse, networked computers (with a shared file system) and a GUI (with WYSIWIG).

But apparently there were five things that they saw, according to Steve W. They also met with the 3d Graphics team who when Xerox stopped paying the bills went on to found a company called Pixar.

And they also showed them a concept piece called the dynabook: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynabook which is basically the iPhone.

  • Nick09/11/2009 at 14:56

But it is user-friendly. It is like buying a petrol car and trying to adapt it to another fuel, when you should have bought a car that supported it anyway!

Its like having a petrol car which brakes down and it needing a new engine... someone says here try one of these diesel engines they are more fuel efficient. IS it harder to use than my petrol one? no... just different.

You drive around happily for a few days untill you discover nowhere sells the fuel you need for the car, so you have to spend a lot of time driving to to other petrol stations to get some.

Then you discover that the winndscreen woipers dont work... you fins some instructions to adapt them, but they are so complecated and without proper explination you decide you need to get new ones. which again you have to spend a lot of time driving around looking for.

Eventualy you realise that although the new engine is shiney and fuel efficent, the old engine, which did break down occasionly was better, because you knew how to fix it, and there were plenty of people willing to help you. If you wanted a new bit it was no trouble to find....

I would have thought you would drive them slightly different, although I have never driven an oil-burner.

Certainly you change gear earlier and you drive in lower revs because the torque band is lower, right?

Possibly a slight ajustment for the turbo, but thats pretty intuitve its not really conciously changing the way you drive...

    Heart Mike!

i think it's fair to say his systems work rather well.

    Is there one in Staines?

  • Nick09/11/2009 at 15:22

I am going to have to go and risk it...

the procedure is nuts... i need to have 2 passport photos, scan them then email them!

I have 45 minutes to burn now....I shall use it productively writting a Formula Two guide

  • Alex Andronov09/11/2009 at 15:43

How do you know these things??

Well to be honest... That was a guess. The other two are accurate. In the whole of Stains there must be a photo booth though right?

Which reminds me, I subscribe to Autoblog, which is an excellent source of automotive news... however, the F1 stories posted are often a week old and from F1-Live (which just buys GMM), so I find myself and others repeatedly asking them not to bother if they are just going to do that!

Weird for a lot of reasons too. It seems that Silverstone served as the turning point both in 1994 and 2009 - although both championship leaders did hang on. :)

Rubens was racing before the World Wide Web became available to all.

Rubens is the only man on the grid to have raced against Senna, Prost, and Mansell.

  • Lukeh09/11/2009 at 16:24

I have a question for you all actually...

Even though he didn't have a prolific winning record or win a championship, in a decade or two do you think Rubens will be considered anything near a legend? Obviously I don't mean Senna/Stewart/etc kind of legend but... hopefully you understand what I'm getting at when asking this. Someone asked me a few weeks ago and I reckon so... I can't sere why he wouldn't be remembered for his dedication to both be, as well as managing to stay, in F1 all this time.

  • Journeyer09/11/2009 at 16:27

I think he would be remembered in a similar light to Gerhard Berger (who enjoyed a similar level of success). He won't be known to most casual fans, but anyone who's followed the sport for some time will remember and love him for his connection to Ayrton Senna and his love and dedication for the sport (just like Berger).

  • Alison09/11/2009 at 16:28

Ah yes... The live streaming... Better get some of that to happen!

    Hmmm...

  • Christine09/11/2009 at 16:28

Even though he didn't have a prolific winning record or win a championship, in a decade or two do you think Rubens will be considered anything near a legend?

I can remember who he is, therefore he is of legendary status.

  • Alex Andronov09/11/2009 at 16:29

I have a question for you all actually...

If we are honest... It is hard to think he will be well remembered. By ardent fans he will be remembered as possibly the nicest man in F1.

If you ask people on Sidepodcast who Chris Amon is they will tell you he was a legend. But even on Sidepodcast not everyone will know who he is.

  • Alex Andronov09/11/2009 at 16:30

I can remember who he is, therefore he is of legendary status.

Well that's it sealed... That's from Christine off the internet.

  • Alex Andronov09/11/2009 at 16:31

    Hmmm...

    Don't panic!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)09/11/2009 at 16:31

I think he will be remembered like Patrese - a nice guy who stuck around for a long time, won some races when his team mate became champion and then retired in a car not quite as good.

  • Lukeh09/11/2009 at 16:31

If you ask people on Sidepodcast who Chris Amon is they will tell you he was a legend. But even on Sidepodcast not everyone will know who he is.

This is a good point. It's a wierd one because, even though his record will probably stand for a while what with it soon to reach 300, and as Journeyer put it, casual fans will probably be unknowing of him in future generations of F1 fans because he was never a true stand out F1 star. Bit of a shame but that's f1 for you at times :P

Although Christine did say he is of legendary status.... :P

  • Journeyer09/11/2009 at 16:33

I think he will be remembered like Patrese - a nice guy who stuck around for a long time, won some races when his team mate became champion and then retired in a car not quite as good.

I think he's better than Patrese - unlike the Italian, Rubens actually contended for a championship once in his career. And also unlike Patrese, there were days when Rubens simply thrashed the field (like both his wins in 2003 and this year too).

  • Alex Andronov09/11/2009 at 16:34

The 300 is huge. As will be the longest gap between starting and final race which is currently held by Graham Hill (and Rubens will get it in Bahrain). In some ways this is the purer stat because there are more races these days.

But with drivers starting younger and younger. It's hard to say if it will stand?

  • Lukeh09/11/2009 at 16:35

But with drivers starting younger and younger. It's hard to say if it will stand?

Depends how long they stay in the sport I suppose. It stills so odd to me that, next year, Kimi Raikonnen will be celebrating a decade in F1!

  • RG09/11/2009 at 16:36

That is true. I wonder if someone will point it out then.

But with drivers starting younger and younger. It's hard to say if it will stand?

It depends. Most super-successful drivers don't stay this long - they tend to leave once they've achieved the success they wanted. The crappy drivers obviously don't stay this long (except Andrea de Cesaris, I guess, but he's an exception). Those who stay long are usually drivers that are imperious on their day, consistently at the top (although not always winning), and a safe pair of hands - perfect rear gunners for possible champions. Look at Barrichello, Coulthard, Patrese, and Fisichella, among others.

  • Journeyer09/11/2009 at 16:39

    As will Alonso.

With 20 races a season and drivers starting at 19, I would wager it will be broken soon...

If you ask people on Sidepodcast who Chris Amon is they will tell you he was a legend. But even on Sidepodcast not everyone will know who he is.

If you were to ask N Roebuck who Chris Amon is, he would probably say, "He must have run over a nun, or something."

Then he'd say, "Who are you, anyway?"

  • Nick09/11/2009 at 16:47

Fauzy makes sense to me if Yoong isn't in. I don't rate him hugely but he has the connections. Then again he may have improved while I wasn't looking.. he's got plenty of lower level experience now..

  • Kimster/Samy09/11/2009 at 19:16

by the way I made a Kimi car on Forza 3, its a kited out Audi R8 5.2 that kills others. And it has Kimi Raikkonen's name all over it!!

  • Kimster/Samy09/11/2009 at 19:18

yesterday, in a field, i looked at five shivering people (two of which were men), and asked what the issue was? i was toasty at the time.

Alison did tell them they hadn't wrapped up warm enough.

  • Pat W09/11/2009 at 19:50

I have a theory that I am working on that some people are much more sensitive to drafts than others. And often people of a female persuasion are more susceptible to said drafts.

To throw the spanner into the works, I am male and despise cold.

you know what i think... i think it's because men can't multitask, they have to work faster.

  • Kimster/Samy09/11/2009 at 19:59

Buemi confirmed at Torro Rosso, well he was the best of the rookies (well he was the only rookie that completed a whole season lol)

buemi showed he could waste a perfectly fast car when he had one.

  • Janna09/11/2009 at 20:00

  • Christine09/11/2009 at 20:04

    Ooh How so?

It is physically impossible to do two things at once.

The trick is being able to switch between many different tasks quickly.

  • Pat W09/11/2009 at 20:05

me too. Probably because I am smug and lazy.

oh yes, I forgot to add that I am also smug and lazy

  • Lukeh09/11/2009 at 20:05

Have done so... and even made a omment...

Have just read it, thanks a lot :)

Fingers crossed Kimi and his future are decided soon for your sake!

  • RG09/11/2009 at 20:06

    go on...

He has so far completley outperformed both his team mates this season, Bourdais and Alguesuari have nothing on him. That car I don't think is the best, not as good as the Red Bull (I think its the different engines I don't know). Obviously he is no where near as good as Vettel or Webber, but he has stuck that car in some pretty impressive performances this season. Sure Kobayashi got 6th, hardly anyone mentions that Buemi got 8th. In his first three races he had three points. Thats not bad going for sure. Sure, he could have driven a bit quicker and all, maybe made a few less mistakes. But definatly has impressed me.

  • Pat W09/11/2009 at 20:07

Need to make some coffee to warm up and get me in the mood to do productive things

  • Christine09/11/2009 at 20:07

The trick is being able to switch between many different tasks quickly.

The multitasking thing is here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/bang/videos/tv_highlights/bang_liz_multitask_highlight/

But it may or may not be available outside the UK, I don't know.

  • Kimster/Samy09/11/2009 at 20:28

Kobayashi is amazing, though he was under pressure of working in a sushi bar for next season, maybe thats the trick to make drivers go quicker.

Kimi WILL get a drive next season and anyone who has Hulk in their name must be good :)

Nothing much. First day back at work for about a week (been off ill), and my uni tutor comes to see how i'm doing on the day the firewall gets confused and blocks every single website! (for background info, I'm doing IT support, so a failure is quite a problem)

    ahh. understood.

our lens goes soft at full zoom, so basically every shot needs a little and aperture's tools aren't cutting it. the rest is okay but i've tried the sharpen and sharpen edges. neither produce remotely decent results.

I have gained from using it but I can't say why at the moment...

I think part of it might be getting used to it, this is the first time we've seriously tried to use it to do anything, and I'm sure there are some keyboard shortcuts out there that would be helpful.

But it was the first time I actually used it at the same time as someone else, and saw how it worked while other folks were editing waves.

Just having a good nose through the drop.io, particularly through the pictures taken yesterday at Mercedes-Benz World, and this just sent a shiver down my spine.

Now I don't know if it was just me, but did anyone else feel like they were peering at some tyrant's liar from James Bond when looking at that huge, cold, building with its rotating logo? No? Just me then...

  • me09/11/2009 at 22:14

    #rubensfacts

Rubens was racing in F1 before I started paying attention to F1.

He was also racing in F1 at the very end of the last major world recession.

Only two of the F1 teams Rubens has raced for (Ferrari and Brawn) remain in their current incarnations.

When Rubens started F1 racing, South Africa was still on the path to a nuclear weapons program, North Korea hadn't started its program and the fastest processor for the PC was a 486DX2 - at a mere 40MHz.

Nelson Mandela was yet to receive his shared Nobel Peace Prize.

Two 125cc class motorbikers, Scott Redding and Marc Márquez, were born in the off-season that Rubens transferred into F1.

Details of the drivers for next month's 3 day young driver test are starting to come out. Joe has a post on the three drivers who will test for Ferrari and autosport report that Daniel Ricciardo will test for Red Bull while Brendon Hartley will test for Toro Rosso. Red Bull are clearly backing the antipodeans

hehe i know, i'm sure there were others too.. i know they all tried really hard to get the team through it. But i always find him funny... i've not seen much of him this year as most of the attention has been on Ross, but i think it works better that way. Plus Nick always ends up saying something like 'we are in the midst of contract negotiations with Jenson, and we are confident we will be able to confirm things soon' at the beginning of the season, and they always seem to wait till the end of the season has finished before they actually sign anything. While this makes sense you have to wonder why he bothers to say anything about it :)

i can understand why you don't like/hate/loathe it, but it was different, and sometimes thats just what you need, everyone knew it made no difference to the planet their livery, but it was different, and after Toyota popped out this

:o!!! nooooooo.... nothing is worse (environmentally wise) than painting some green on a tyre and expecting that to be enough... At least honda tried... they had cardboard tents and everything!

i know... my point wasn't that it was a good idea, my point was they tried to be active in their campaign, unlike bridgestone who seem to think the paint solves the problem...

i know... my point wasn't that it was a good idea, my point was they tried to be active in their campaign, unlike bridgestone who seem to think the paint solves the problem...

i'm not convinced. thing honda f1 did...

    - told button to ride a bike

    - used a PR company, who ordered recyclable tents

    - wrote some illegible names of fans on their livery to cover up the livery

    - quit f1

aside from the final point, what exactly did they do that helped f1?

and bridgestone have already covered the last point, so the green tyre argument stands.

  • Steven Roy10/11/2009 at 00:02

    - used a PR company, who ordered recyclable tents

Normal tents can be used many more times than cardboard tenst and as well as being better tents they are a lot more environmentally friendly.

  • me10/11/2009 at 00:03

He made her stay in a carboard tent

    That's worse.

in nick fry's defence. i quite like him too really. however, he isn't really very good at f1, and he isn't much use at finding sponsors, or keeping the one's he has.

well, no. not true. eco-whatever-they-be-called are designed to fix one problem, and one problem alone. and that is...

people buying cheap tents, going to glastonbury for 4 days, ruining them during the weekend and simply leaving them in the field.

that is the sole issue that is trying to be resolved and i believe it's a very good idea that needed a little more work.

  • Jon Waldock10/11/2009 at 00:06

  • lou10/11/2009 at 00:06

aside from the final point, what exactly did they do that helped f1?

oh i never said they helped f1 with their campaign, other than giving the journalists a few things to talk about but they kinda tried to show support for it...but all i see Bridgestone having done is paint some tyres and make is harder for us all to differentiate between the two compounds...

also they didn't help f1 by leaving f1... although i suppose they kinda did cause Brawn GP wouldn't be around... but i still liked them.. *is in knots about how to defend them...*

  • Jon Waldock10/11/2009 at 00:07

how so? there are still two cars on the grid that took their place (and basically the same team)... if anything the Brawns have done more laps and so used more fuel than the Hondas did...

oh.. you've now confused me..i'm now defending Honda by saying things about the Brawn... this should never have to happen! :P

hehe. taking honda in isolation. they best thing that they did for the environment was quit f1. that was the message i took away from their campaign. if you want to solve the worlds problems, be a quitter.
