We have reached Sunday, and it is the first weekend of the off season. No racing to watch, but at least a chance to have a lie in, and relax. There was talk of feeling depressed at the lack of action yesterday, but there is no need for that. We have a great doohickey, lovely people to talk to and plenty of fun and games planned for the next few months. Be happy and savour the down time so the action is even better when it gets going again next year. Now, what comes next? Oh yes, things we're talking about:

  • In the comments, I mentioned a news item about Montoya, who was say he didn't think the NASCAR title was in his grasp anymore. Now, I know nothing about NASCAR and have a t-shirt that states it was boring, but I do care how Montoya is getting on. Does anyone else find that? If a driver from F1 moves series, do you still follow them? Or at least keep an eye on their progress even if you couldn't care less about their new gig?
  • Whilst we're on the subject of NASCAR, Toyota have said they are committed to that series, despite pulling out of F1 with little warning. They have had more success over there, of course, and will likely feel they are getting more value for money.

That's all for now. A few of us are off to the Mercedes-Benz day at Brooklands today, so keep an eye on the drop for pictures. I will see you in the comments.

I have no idea what that means but have fun.

I think I'll go to be also. I have no idea what I'm doing other than feeding cats. I should probably do boring stuff like sort my '08/'09 revision notes into recogniseable sections ready for my retake revision.. I'm yawning already.

I keep an eye on Tiago Monteiro and was quite annoyed to see him lose out in the first-corner kerfuffle at the start of the last WTCC race. (Also happy that his GP2 team had its maiden win a couple of months back).

  • Alison08/11/2009 at 02:17

I'm so sad that i can't go to th merc thing tomorrow. I didn't realise i'd be down :(

No Masterchef on the iplayer but I found a program presented by Eddie Irvine. I have to watch that later to see how often he says how great Michael is.

Will the team be around next season to run it, though?

  • Journeyer08/11/2009 at 05:15

As for racing this weekend, MotoGP wraps up its season today at Valencia (1200 GMT), while NASCAR goes racing at Texas (2000 GMT).

I started watching NASCAR when I could even before JPM went back to the States. As it stands, he's one of the drivers I like right now (along with JJ), and I have been seriously impressed with his form this season, as the only driver in the 2nd half of the season to avoid a Hendrick clean sweep (with JPM the only non-Hendrick car in the Top 5).

  • Journeyer08/11/2009 at 05:19

    F1 2009 season review in words: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsport/formula_one/drivers_and_teams/default.stm

EJ reviews the teams, Martin reviews the drivers. And a quiz with each team review too.

I am cursing the fact that I washed my sheets and didn't get the stain out where I spilt a cup of tea on them so now I am washing them again. I am thankful that even with the delay they will still dry instantly because its still 34 degrees. Other than that I am sitting in front of my fan doing some transcribing because I spent too long in the sun with my Kindle and now I'm slowly dying of the heat.

no, I really cannot justify the cost, I figure the money I would spend on that will pay for my Singapore ticket. I'll probably go for the Marina Bay stand since its the cheapest. It's not where I want to sit, but considering Singapore was a total afterthought, I have to do it on the cheap :D

  • Amy08/11/2009 at 10:27

Still noone heard from jon? :(

not yet. He was still here at midnight, he should have gone to bed earlier!

  • Christine and/or Mr C08/11/2009 at 10:28

Its freezing. The safety car has just done some laps and had a bit of a spin.

  • Alison08/11/2009 at 10:30

It is very freezing. None of you look very wrapped up though... You need wooly coats and gloves!

  • RG08/11/2009 at 10:30

Morning all. Game off, now proud to pronounce the team we were to play as wimps.

    Hows the thingy?

  • Christine and/or Mr C08/11/2009 at 10:32

Hamilton is driving himself round the track. Heikki is being driven. We think they don't trust him with the car, or maybe his insurance lapsed.

    #sorryAmy

  • Jon Waldock08/11/2009 at 10:33

Still noone heard from jon? :(

    I'm here :(

Staying up at midnight wasn't my problem, i actually went to bed earlier than usual. My problem was the idiots that set the fire alarm off twice last night. Once at 2.30am and once at 4am, the later meaning we had to stay outside for 30 minutes. Add to that all 3 of my alarm clocks not going off, and clearly I didn't wake up.

Can you pass my apologies onto everyone, especially Jackie. Am gutted I missed it :(

  • Amy08/11/2009 at 10:36

Can you pass my apologies onto everyone, especially Jackie. Am gutted I missed it :(

are they fining the people who do it? surely by this stage of the year people shouldn't be finding any humour in it!

  • RG08/11/2009 at 10:38

Can you pass my apologies onto everyone, especially Jackie. Am gutted I missed it :(

Awww, that is just crap. :(

you'd have thought so. i think they know which flat did one of them, but i have no idea.

Im just so angry at myself :(

  • RG08/11/2009 at 10:39

Im just so angry at myself :(

But it wasn't your fault, get angry at other people.

  • Christine and/or Mr C08/11/2009 at 10:40

We keep seeing people with Pirelli hats on. They must know something we don't.

  • Jon Waldock08/11/2009 at 10:41

But it wasn't your fault, get angry at other people.

I know i know. I was just looking forward to it lots. I discovered this week that my halls used to be a child prison, and i've felt it this week, so was looking forward to getting out. But apparently not.

  • Christine and/or Mr C08/11/2009 at 10:41

Im just so angry at myself :(

    Aww, sorry Jon.

  • Christine and/or Mr C08/11/2009 at 10:46

  • Lady Snowcat08/11/2009 at 11:10

Just heard Lewis is wanting Heikki or Jense as a team-mate next season...

He and Mr Ryder deserve each other....

  • Christine and/or Mr C08/11/2009 at 11:11

Just spotted suzie stoddart on crutches, do we know why?

  • RG08/11/2009 at 11:11

I swear Bernie is everywhere, just seen him at the MotoGP in Valenica.

Just be careful he isn't where you are.

  • Lukeh08/11/2009 at 11:12

Sometimes those injuries aren't found out straight away.

Say, Timo Glock's 'back' injury, if you believe that to be true.

  • Lady Snowcat08/11/2009 at 11:18

I’m sure he’s right, what with him being hero of us all and all that.

    Hmmm...

    Amusing...

Of course any hero of Steve Ryder's will never be a hero of mine...

Why didn't Merc get Jake in?... couldn't they afford him?...

Just hoping they are saving their pennies for Kimi....

    Afternoon all

Those stupid people at http://www.podcastawards.com/ have posted the podcasts nominated for awards and despite our efforts sidepodcast did not get through the nomination procedure. I haven't visited the sites of those nominated in the sports category but there are three from ESPN and a clear majority of American sites. Looks like no motor sport podcasts made it.

  • Dank08/11/2009 at 18:06

Think I must be turning into a right ol' misery guts, as I was quite underwhelmed with the Mercedes-Benz event. Can't quite put my finger on it as to why though.

It was a little bit like a cold goodwood, could also have done with being a bit shorter i think with perhaps better seperation between stage and track events.

Having said that; i enjoyed it, it was good to see the Cars running from up close, and the interviews were quite good.

IM sure Bernie will phone up lewis and ask him why he has confirmed the 2010 British GP!

Agree with that. Needed to be at least a break for lunch as we queued up for a container of lukewarm chips for 45 minutes and missed most of the DC and Mika interview.

Just, could have done with, well, more variety really. Not a patch on the World Series by Renault event, although that's like comparing a spoon to an orange I guess.

In terms of a free pr event it was very good, i was suprised how many people turned out though... 20,000 probably makes it one of the best attended motorsport events in the country?

Mercedes-Benz only gave out 15,000 tickets I thought? I did scoff when Steve Ryder claimed it was so high. Still a good number for the venue certainly.

i enjoyed it for several reasons... i got to see the brawn... and omg! i got to spend the day with Mr and Mrs C, Nick, Jackie and Kimster having lots of much needed laughs, got to relax and take photos and i got to hear f1 cars again. all in all i didn't think it was bad for a free event :) room for improvement in the future though for sure. :)

  • Nick08/11/2009 at 18:19

Tea is calling me, see you later!

    Night!

Which museum is it then? I think the use of the word "victim" was what worried us.

Best moment of the day: seeing Davidson get out of the Brawn and realising just how ickle he really is.

Said pubs are unsuitable for me though! I learned today that little beings are very easy too fall over... add alcohol and it could be trouble!

  • Alison08/11/2009 at 18:29

Don't worry. I don't think i'll be able to talk about anything else for about a week...

With you being the one with kids, i think we have to ask you the same question ;)

  • Andy Taylor08/11/2009 at 18:31

    That is a non-denial denial

he was on a golf buggy... they made the mistake of letting mika drive his own, and he had it on 2 wheels with people dangling off the back!

  • Andy Taylor08/11/2009 at 18:33

With you being the one with kids, i think we have to ask you the same question ;)

The answer is no I haven't, but it would be an interesting way to get them to eat their greens ;)

  • Nick08/11/2009 at 18:33

Anyone who can drift a golf buggy deserves a medal

I dont think i saw that... but he was completly out of control!

He is an old shool racing driver.

It was interesting to hhear them talk about how DTM cars are more similar to single seater's than touring cars or even GT cars... thats something i hadn't realised...

  • Steven Roy08/11/2009 at 18:41

It was interesting to hhear them talk about how DTM cars are more similar to single seater's than touring cars or even GT cars... thats something i hadn't realised...

DTM cars are way too high tech and expensive. That's why there are only two manufacturers left.

  • Dank08/11/2009 at 18:42

I dont think i saw that... but he was completly out of control!

Gutted I missed him. Was busy talking to a couple of the Brawn mechanics at the time and when I tried to dash over to the stage he'd disappeared.

They basically are single seaters with a roof, just like LMP1/2 cars

Do you regularly watch it? Despite its flaws, I really like DTM and have been getting more and more into it. Have a keen eye on di Resta and Paffett.

  • Andy Taylor08/11/2009 at 18:44

hehe! do we need an LPG headping? ;)

no. LPG would like it to be known that we have children who not only eat their greens, but ask for them. All without any form of bribery or incentive.

  • Steven Roy08/11/2009 at 18:45

Do you regularly watch it? Despite its flaws, I really like DTM and have been getting more and more into it. Have a keen eye on di Resta and Paffett.

I watched a couple of seasons of it a while back when Bernd Scheider was dominant and before that watched a bit when Klaus Ludwig was winning. I have only seen bits and pieces of the last few years though

  • Dank08/11/2009 at 18:47

Dank, Tell your other half that her photos are amazing!!

It really is that easy lurkers.

  • jackie/saltire08/11/2009 at 19:43

I'm good. Did you have a fun day at the Merc event?

Company was great but there wasn't so much to do. We saw Lewis (well got crushed in the push for autographs), Heikki, DC, Pedalo, Ross Brawn, Mika, Anthony Davidson .. so it was great for celebrity spotting

  • Steven Roy08/11/2009 at 19:45

Autograph hunters are a pain. They seem only interested in getting a signature and not taking in the event. They are like some pushy photographers.

Seriously, I was worried people would be crushed, we were stuck solid for about 20 mins and I couldn't move, my back was killing me with the pushing

  • jackie/saltire08/11/2009 at 19:48

I have to say that Lewis seemed like a decent chap, he talked with passion. Maybe its just the tv interviews that cast him in a bad light

  • Steven Roy08/11/2009 at 19:49

I got caught up in a minor version of that at Goodwood when Lewis came up the hill a couple of hours ahead of schedule. Trouble was I was overrun by hyperactive 10 year olds so I couldn't even use my elbows on them

  • Lukeh08/11/2009 at 19:49

I have to say that Lewis seemed like a decent chap, he talked with passion. Maybe its just the tv interviews that cast him in a bad light

Most of the time on TV he is in Mclaren/Anthony Hamilton PR mode

IE; The team did a great job this weekend blah blah

i was almost within touching distance of mr brawn :D hehe i learnt something i didn't think i would today... although i'm reegarded as tall... i'm actually kinda small... i was almost engolfed by the crowd at one point, i looked up and i could litterally only just make out mr c's hat.. i couldn't see anyone else from our group.. crowds are scary..

  • Jon Waldock08/11/2009 at 19:52

  • jackie/saltire08/11/2009 at 19:55

The one criticism I would have of the event was that the staff did nothing to prevent the crushing, they could have formed people in an orderly cue or at least, stopped letting more people through.

    hehe yes. it really is.

I am loving this podcast with John Watson. Great to see someone saying what he thinks regardless of anyone.

EJ is a friend of Gerry and Martin (Adams & McGuinness)

Jenson is uncomplicated, vacuous, shallow and empty. I think he is trying to suggest he is thick.

EJ is a friend of Gerry and Martin (Adams & McGuinness)

Jenson is uncomplicated, vacuous, shallow and empty. I think he is trying to suggest he is thick.

    :(

hey jackie, hey lou. everyone get back safe?

Yep I did thanks, and I dropped kimster off at home also

  • Steven Roy08/11/2009 at 20:33

didn't max get into a heap of trouble for saying something similar about sir jackie?

That was very different. He was alluding to JYS's dyslexia by saying certified. What Watson is saying is that in press interviews Jenson comes across as uncomplicated....

  • lou08/11/2009 at 20:34

hey jackie, hey lou. everyone get back safe?

yep, i'm back and nice and warm.. well kinda. just looking through photos now.

I see what you and Mrs C meant when you said Steve Ryder had been punched in the eye...kinda wishing he hadn't done the interviews... it doesn't look great in some of the interview photos... :P they should have got Ant to interview everyone :D

  • me08/11/2009 at 20:34

I am loving this podcast with John Watson. Great to see someone saying what he thinks regardless of anyone.

He's obviously not heard of defamation/libel laws ;)

  • me08/11/2009 at 20:35

yes me too! :D it was much needed after this week, couldn't have asked for nicer company, and seeing the Brawn (have i mentioned this enough yet) was just awesome :)

  • Andy Taylor08/11/2009 at 20:36

I see what you and Mrs C meant when you said Steve Ryder had been punched in the eye...

Was it some sort of delayed reaction to his work on the ITV F1 coverage?

  • Chris08/11/2009 at 20:36

  • lou08/11/2009 at 20:55

i feel bad that i don't feel sorry for Ryder having a black eye, and that i'm more angry i feel he's ruined some nice shots cause it seems to dominate some of them :(

  • Andy Taylor08/11/2009 at 20:55

you have TWO Nikons??!!! omg.. i had massive lens envy today.. it's bad times.. ;)

Yep. D70 and D200, both excellent cameras. I've got some relatively cheap lenses (Nikkor and Sigma) and a couple of SB800 flashes too, plus some stands for them.

It is just like poker. Some luck but people just ignore the stats and focus on the big prize they could get. If you watch the majority of the people who turn down any offer over about £15,000 lose.

but it's stupid how 24 people can win 1p but only 2 people can win £250,000. Obviously C4 doesn't want to part with it's money, but the stats don't add up...

  • lou08/11/2009 at 21:39

  • Jon Waldock08/11/2009 at 21:41

yeah most careers you can buy quite cheap actually. just depends how much you want to pay.

  • Andy Taylor08/11/2009 at 21:41

but it's stupid how 24 people can win 1p but only 2 people can win £250,000. Obviously C4 doesn't want to part with it's money, but the stats don't add up...

Remember probability is random, if you toss a coin 100 times, it might come up heads, tails, heads, tails..... or headsx50 then tailsx50. Either way the probability is 1/2.

  • Steven Roy08/11/2009 at 21:43

but it's stupid how 24 people can win 1p but only 2 people can win £250,000. Obviously C4 doesn't want to part with it's money, but the stats don't add up...

That is because people get down to two boxes and if the have £250k and £10k they are going to take the offer but if they have 1p and a few hundred they gamble.

  • Lewis/LB2208/11/2009 at 21:44

yeah, but...in over 1100 shows, that just doesn't work...

but also the 1p has been on the table nearly treble the amount of times the £250k has

  • Steven Roy08/11/2009 at 21:48

yeah, but...in over 1100 shows, that just doesn't work...

It does. The amount of risk people are prepared to take decreases with the amount of money involved. Most people even with £250k and £100k will take an offer of £150k because they would see winning the £100k as losing £50k.

It's like who wants to be a millionaire. Only about 4 people have won the million in about ten years because as the amount of money increases they become risk averse.

  • Lewis/LB2208/11/2009 at 21:48

    babysitting duties over.. heading home..

    I feel for you....

  • Steven Roy08/11/2009 at 21:49

but also the 1p has been on the table nearly treble the amount of times the £250k has

That is very unlikely. I have seen the £250k on the table quite a few times and I rarely watch the program

  • Scott Woodwiss08/11/2009 at 21:50

I'm leading a Forza 3 leage race, and the connection decides to go on the penultimate lap WHEN I'M LEADING.

  • Andy Taylor08/11/2009 at 21:51

yeah, but...in over 1100 shows, that just doesn't work...

There are a lot more boxes in DOND, so the probability that you have the £250k is lower. it's a 1 in 22 chance, so 1100/22 gives you 50 occasions when each value appears in the box. Remember that's what probability tells us rather than real life, you might have to run the experiment thousands more times to get the result you expect. That's a scary thought - more screen time for Noel Tidy Beard.

Is there a record of how many times the £250k is in the box rather than the number of times it has been won by someone?

Campos chassis makers, Dallara, say they have already passed the FIA front and side impact tests

    Will the team be around next season to run it, though? {Comment #38}

So they failed the other three crash tests presumably? Interesting, but probably less interesting than it first appears given how often other teams fail such tests at this stage...

Was lovely to meet you Nick .. don't know how you stayed awake so long

Was awesome meeting you guys too... fun day... I probabbly seemed like a zombie, i might have been slightly tired!

Autograph hunters are a pain. They seem only interested in getting a signature and not taking in the event. They are like some pushy photographers.

It did seem slightly insane... i got ross to sign my abu dhabi ticket... but i litleraly saw people holding up their children to be signed!

It looks like Heikki's waving to one of you.

I am almost certain at one pint DC specificly waved at Mrc through the motorhome it was scary!

am off to sleep now. this may be the earliest i ever done sleeps. catch you all tomorrow. cheers to everyone at brooklands, and in the comments for a brilliant day.

Was aesome to meet you and Christine, mr C... good to know you are real :P
