A great Spring Sunset near where I live...

Hey guys, did you enjoy your pancakes yesterday? Good, because today is the first day of lent, where you are supposed to give up something.  Seeing as we have given up on F1 for months I think we are all ok though ;)

I once gave up chocolate when I was a kid – man it was difficult, and to make things worse, I ate like a pig on Easter Sunday!

Anyway, we have some F1 news for you, so have a look at the links I have in store for you today:

F1 News

Well, we had the first day of the final test today – where the biggest story seemed to be McLaren’s new nose. No, not the Comic Relief sketch, but a device to measure wing flexing, according to ScarbsF1

Apparently Pirelli are going to be allowed to test experimental compounds during Friday Practice sessions in order to gather data, as they have not had any running in hot weather yet.

The FIA have announced that the decision on whether Bahrain will happen this year will be taken in May, along with some other confusing rule changes involving the pitlane and the safety car (no, I don’t understand why either)…

The UK website for the Senna movie has been launched - which comes out June 3rd (not quickly enough!) Chainbear has an excellent idea for the sequel too – and speaking of Back to the Future, here’s another trailer ;)

Christine has her driver and team rankings up – also including the lovely gesture by @MyTeamLotus to Rob Sinfield (@GrandPrixDiary), who was supposed to be on the Flight to Malaysia where Richard Branson was the stewardess, but he pulled out.  Team Lotus are still going to take him to the Malaysian Grand Prix, which I reckon is really nice of them!

We have a lovely new toy in the Sidepodcast Playground with more to come – I really like the look of this…

The BBC have an F1 preview up which will shock you – it’s filmed in a studio so you can actually hear what they are saying, it’s not geo-locked and Eddie Jordan is mouthing off against McLaren (again…)  Quite a decent job and I reckon they should have more studio time at the actual races too!

Some blogs for you

VivaF1 have a fantastic article about some of the shadier characters who have graced the F1 paddock.

Leigh was at Silverstone yesterday to see some F3 testing.

F1 Badger has a great article about the nearly men of F1.

Joe Saward talks about a day out helping up and coming drivers as part of the FIA Academy.

WTF1 had a circuit drawing competition – which you have to see the winner of!

Also Pat’s got his TMR Scores updated for the week – no picks this week but don’t forget to make them for next week.  Also, every now and then I will write a blog post with some graphs, so you guys can see how you are tracking ;)

This is an awesome picture of the sun and a detached prominence – very cool!

How about a cool infographic of Doctor Who, including Sonic Screwdrivers!

Tomb Raider is coming back to the cinema as a ‘reboot’.  I liked the first movie but the second was a bit boring…

There was a link in the daily the other day for a Traffic Simulator from Eyeteaguy – it’s a lot of fun and a neat little curiosity to play with…

I am starting to cycle to work – soon I shall be running too, and I am using an app for my iPhone called ‘Runkeeper’ to log my progress.  I am slow at the moment but I am getting better already.  You can track my progress here if you want.  There are others blogging about their fitness routines too – Amy and Christine amongst others.  Why not give it a go yourself?

Finally, a question for you to ponder.  Who came first, the chicken or the egg? :D

See you in the comments guys ;)

the Rugby Sevens are just behind the corner over here (that is the maddest of weekends in our city). the made-for-rugby commercials are starting to appear ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INIMb_D1PRE&feature=player_embedded

Nice to see sidepodcasters doing fitness, this is really motivating. Going to hit the gym today. uhuhuhuhu I think I won't blog about it, but next week I'm going to start with badminton. I might write updates on this ... Am I going to be the Nadal of badminton? hahahaha But it is a good target & motivation! :D

Thanks Amanda - you should go for it too - it's hard work, but working towards a goal is challenging and fun. You really feel better afterwards too :)

By the way, I had an AWESOME ride to work this morning - five minutes quicker than last night and felt real good: http://runkeeper.com/user/RubberGoat/activity/27970811

On average I was 3km/h (and a whole gear) faster :D

By the way, I had an AWESOME ride to work this morning - five minutes quicker than last night and felt real good:

for me biking to office would mean either a) go 5 mins, board ferry, cross harbour and then bike for 5 mins or b) venture into the hot polluted cross harbour tunnel (and that somehow negates the whole health improvement point :-) )

  • RubberGoat09/03/2011 at 07:43

Ah very true. Gym for you then ;)

I am lucky in that there are loads of cycle lanes here and that there is a big park where I can go running - the only downside is that I have to join a gym in winter...

This may be the most depressing thing I have ever read:

"A metro.co.uk poll has seen Leona Lewis voted the most influential woman to live or work in London in the past century. The singer got more votes than Margaret Thatcher and Justin Roberts, the founder of Mumsnet."

  • RubberGoat09/03/2011 at 10:14

"A metro.co.uk poll has seen Leona Lewis voted the most influential woman to live or work in London in the past century. The singer got more votes than Margaret Thatcher and Justin Roberts, the founder of Mumsnet."

I'd vote for Leona Lewis over Margaret Thatcher #justsaying ;)

  • F1Wolf09/03/2011 at 10:23

I'd vote for Leona Lewis over Margaret Thatcher #justsaying ;)

    who is Leona Lewis ?

  • RubberGoat09/03/2011 at 10:24

    who is Leona Lewis ?

Some XFactor winning singer or something, right?

  • Pat W09/03/2011 at 10:25

    Morning.

"A metro.co.uk poll has seen Leona Lewis voted the most influential woman to live or work in London in the past century. The singer got more votes than Margaret Thatcher and Justin Roberts, the founder of Mumsnet."

Did that come from a multiple choice question?

I've never heard of the founder of Mumsnet and didn't know the site was a big deal..

  • Pat W09/03/2011 at 10:25

Some XFactor winning singer or something, right?

Yeah and was on the Olympic bus with Jimmy Page in the 'handover' bit at Beijing.

  • Leigh O'Gorman09/03/2011 at 10:26

    X-Factor singer.

Not publicly, but they do lots of work behind the scenes

    A couple of months back

  • Alianora La Canta09/03/2011 at 12:20

    A couple of months back

So a few months after the attempt to call Renault Lotus started. Which merely highlights how foolish Proton were to get into F1 when they had that sort of skeleton in the closet.

  • Leigh O'Gorman09/03/2011 at 12:23

So a few months after the attempt to call Renault Lotus started. Which merely highlights how foolish Proton were to get into F1 when they had that sort of skeleton in the closet.

Aye - much of the project (including the other Proton projects) appear to be government backed and funded, despite Proton seemingly on the verge of collapse.

Hiya again. Have been playing the Nintendo 3DS this morning and I must say technically it's really quite something. Not very good for my eyes though.

    What were you playing?

  • Amy09/03/2011 at 13:33

I did not go running today as I wasn't feeling the bestest. I have now self diagnosed food poisoning so am heading to bed to sleep it off :)

    Night all

  • Lukeh09/03/2011 at 13:33

    What were you playing?

I played around with the Mii stuff, Pilotwings 3D and I watched a video on it for the Legend of Zelda game. The final two were in 3D and it has such a profound effect considering you don't wear any glasses. Well, I do, but not 3d glasses I mean :)

For just a screen though it is quite something to look at. Hurts a bit though and made me a bit cross eyes but that's just because my eyes are annoying like that with 3D :(

  • Christine09/03/2011 at 13:33

I did not go running today as I wasn't feeling the bestest. I have now self diagnosed food poisoning so am heading to bed to sleep it off :)

    Aww, feel better.

Aww thats a shame - did I jinx you by linking to it in the daily?

    Hope you feel better soon...

  • Lukeh09/03/2011 at 13:34

Also you have to hold it at a certain angle to really get the effect, which is a bit annoying. So if a friend watches from the side it's just a bit of a blur. You can turn the 3D off but then it's just a DS :)

    Really fun to play though.

  • RubberGoat09/03/2011 at 13:34

heh no I was already feeling a little niggly by the time the daily was published. It's just escalated to the point where half an hour ago I was like I THINK I'M DYING. Sleep will help :) #nothere

For just a screen though it is quite something to look at. Hurts a bit though and made me a bit cross eyes but that's just because my eyes are annoying like that with 3D :(

I have yet to hear anyone have a 3D story that doesn't involve headaches or feeling sick or painful eyes.

    I don't think it's going to catch on :)

  • Lukeh09/03/2011 at 13:35

Pilotwings and Zelda? Next you'll be saying you played Mario Kart and Pokemon... ;)

I would! There's a new Pokemon game out and everything!

    #gottacatchthemall

  • RubberGoat09/03/2011 at 13:36

Hehe. I guess I meant that Nintendo always release the same games for each system!

  • Lukeh09/03/2011 at 13:36

I have yet to hear anyone have a 3D story that doesn't involve headaches or feeling sick or painful eyes.

I'm not sure why we need 3D stuff in all honesty but I couldn't help but be impressed by how it worked. even if I looked confused and dazed :)

  • RubberGoat09/03/2011 at 13:36

    I don't think it's going to catch on :)

    I hope not. 3D TV's are a daft idea.

  • Lukeh09/03/2011 at 13:39

It makes me laugh when football is on Sky and they're like, you can watch this game in 3D on channel so and so...

...or I could continue to sit here and just watch the game like people have been doing for centuries :)

  • RubberGoat09/03/2011 at 13:40

It makes me laugh when football is on Sky and they're like, you can watch this game in 3D on channel so and so...

They talk as if being in 3D is akin to being there when it clearly isn't.

  • Lukeh09/03/2011 at 13:42

They talk as if being in 3D is akin to being there when it clearly isn't.

Plus if i want to get a headache watching football I'll just watch a Wales game

  • RubberGoat09/03/2011 at 13:42

    Or Arsenal :P

I have yet to hear anyone have a 3D story that doesn't involve headaches or feeling sick or painful eyes.

I get none of the above - but can't see the difference between 3D and 2D on TVs (even the old version requiring those plastic red-green glasses was more realistic). Seems like a pointless technology.

  • Lukeh09/03/2011 at 13:43

Also picked up the BBC season preview and it's much, much more interesting than the F1 Racing one personally.

  • Lukeh09/03/2011 at 13:51

Her, Bruno and Karun were the only good things about HRT and they lost them all. Silly team.

  • Alianora La Canta09/03/2011 at 13:52

Meh. What's the big deal about him?

  • Alianora La Canta09/03/2011 at 13:54

Meh. What's the big deal about him?

He comes with money and unlike the other candidates for Hispania at this point, possesses some skill. Even Mum remembered him... ...even if it was because, "Wasn't he the guy who kept being in crashes at the end?"

  • Christine09/03/2011 at 13:55

I definitely agree he was probably the best option for HRT but I've just never rated him. He has always been a mid to lower team driver for me and it doesn't surprise me to see him at HRT. Perhaps a bit harsh because I do like Force India but even for them I never really thought he was good enough for FI.

  • Pat W09/03/2011 at 13:57

Meh. What's the big deal about him?

I think he's always been faster than Klien, but I always thought Klien was the better allrounder. To be honest if I'm running Hispania I'd rather take an allrounder to help me sort out the car.

  • Alianora La Canta09/03/2011 at 13:58

You reckon FIF1 outdeveloped him? (Tonio looked fine there in the beginning, but considerably less fine as things went on).

I would rather Liuzzi than Klien, just for the sake of Christine's sanity for what Klien did :)

I wonder what HRT would've been like if they had Klien and Bourdais.

  • RubberGoat09/03/2011 at 13:58

Indeed he's a character, but he's not anything special.

  • Lukeh09/03/2011 at 13:59

You reckon FIF1 outdeveloped him? (Tonio looked fine there in the beginning, but considerably less fine as things went on).

Yeah I do. The team seemed to fall back a bit when he got a full time seat and I think they'll be a lot better now with Sutil and Di Resta even if the latter is a rookie.

  • Christine09/03/2011 at 13:59

I would rather Liuzzi than Klien, just for the sake of Christine's sanity for what Klien did :)

Yeah I do. The team seemed to fall back a bit when he got a full time seat and I think they'll be a lot better now with Sutil and Di Resta even if the latter is a rookie.

So that makes him a perfect fit for HRT if you follow that logic.

  • Alianora La Canta09/03/2011 at 14:03

At the moment McLaren would not be within the 107% rule and neither would Virgin or Lotus.

  • Alianora La Canta09/03/2011 at 14:04

It does underline, however, the amount of difference there will be between a typical race lap and a good qualifier. Everyone will need to be on their toes on Saturdays...

Whenever someone mentions that designation I'll always think of the Aardvark:

    and not some poncy car.

  • Leigh O'Gorman09/03/2011 at 14:13

I remember the same thing being said about Bourdais - a fundamentally quick driver, who simply couldn't keep up with the car changes when they happened.

Remember the space shuttle is due to land today. The first opportunity is at 11:57 and 44seconds Eastern / 16:57 44s UK. The link below is the landing blog which will keep you up to date with what is going on. You will get an hour's notice if a landing is to take place because that is when they have to make the de-orbit burn. This is just a short rocket blast that slows the shuttle enough for it to start falling out of the sky

The shuttle landing blog is at the link below

I find the take off and landing for this mission really confusing because Steve Lindsey the head of the astronaut office is the shuttle commander. Normally he is the astronaut flying the shuttle training aircraft(STA) to assess weather and conditions. The STA is a Gulfstreem modified to fly like a brick just like the shuttle but it has engines to save them if they screw up a landing

You should see the MLB site's live coverage of a game. They have a graphic that shows every pitch as it happens and gives data for spin etc. I have no idea how they get such accurate date. It's quite incredible

They actually draw the path of the ball showing where it left the pitcher's hand how it moves in the air and where it passes threw the strike zone.

I can't even imagine having that access to F1. We could be zipping around the each pit area, or each corner, and then throw in the side cameras like in Indy...and oh.. *swoons*

The peoblem is F1 is a sponsor driven sport, unlike the US its not in the teams or the circuit advertisers interests to let fans customize which sponsors they can see.

And of course you have the issue of multiple broadcast rights holders, commentators and legal environments which make it harder.

...And F1 only just got HD!

  • Pat W09/03/2011 at 19:52

And of course you have the issue of multiple broadcast rights holders, commentators and legal environments which make it harder.

The trouble is they seem to equate broadcast rights with online rights, or maybe they sell them together.

I think next time the deals are done there should be a clause to say broadcasters can stream it but F1.com will also offer a live stream, even if it has no commentary, or their own.

  • Nick09/03/2011 at 19:55

The trouble is they seem to equate broadcast rights with online rights, or maybe they sell them together.

In some countries the law says they are the same thing. For example in Saudi Arabia you need to have a newspaper licence to write a blog.

I think next time the deals are done there should be a clause to say broadcasters can stream it but F1.com will also offer a live stream, even if it has no commentary, or their own.

I wonder how much less they would get for the rights? The only option may be to keep the rights value up by making the online stream either very expensive or ad intrusive, both of which could probably make it fail

  • Bassano09/03/2011 at 19:58

In some countries the law says they are the same thing. For example in Saudi Arabia you need to have a newspaper licence to write a blog.

In some countries the law says they are the same thing. For example in Saudi Arabia you need to have a newspaper licence to write a blog.

I don't think their business model of making everything ridiculously expensive will last a great deal longer.

Normally on the graphic that shows you the batter you will see where all the pitches he has faced as circles where they went through the strike zone. They are coloured differently for strike/ball/hit etc. The last/current pitch has the path drawn on screen and you get the stats like speed, spin, pitch factor(no idea).

In the box that shows the various innings/batters etc below that you can see those stats for every pitch in the match.

has this been plugged yet? it's an amazing read: http://www.racecar-engineering.com/articles/nascar/the-secrets-of-laurel-hill/

Laurel Hill’s current configuration includes a 460m acceleration zone, giving a potential test speed of 100mph, but it can easily be reconfigured to allow for test speeds of 120–130mph. Of course, with cars running at speeds of up to 130mph, you need space for them to slow down again and, as the deceleration zone doubles up as the acceleration zone for the return run at Ganassi’s tunnel, it is also around 460m long.

    Microsoft are right.

'Windows' is no different to 'App Store'. But the trademarks should be 'Apple App Store' (or whatever) and 'Microsoft Windows', not 'App Store' and 'Windows'.

  • Bassano09/03/2011 at 22:42

Probably Microsoft because it's had one since Windows CE.

Absolutely right and I agree if MS were to have a store like that, it shouldn't be called an App Store because it just doesn't fit the way they do things, but the term itself should be left open for others.

  • Alianora La Canta09/03/2011 at 22:46

    I agree

Depends on which bit of the empire you want an app for. Microsoft Apps does portable applications for its older phone OSs (including my PDA). Zune Apps does Zune-specific stuff. Office Web Apps does Office. Windows Phone Marketplace does Windows Phone-specific stuff. And so on and so forth.

  • Alianora La Canta09/03/2011 at 22:53

Also, Android has an apps store. So I can definitely understand Microsoft's point of view on this legal matter (for once).

  • Bassano09/03/2011 at 22:54

Also, Android has an apps store. So I can definitely understand Microsoft's point of view on this legal matter (for once).

    No. They have Marketplace

This is the whole legal arguement

We all use Hoover but it's a trademark

  • Alianora La Canta09/03/2011 at 22:58

    No. They have Marketplace

According to Wikipedia we're both wrong (but you were more right than me) and it's called Market. Still, three users of the same name does not a trademark situation make.

  • Lukeh09/03/2011 at 22:59

According to Wikipedia we're both wrong (but you were more right than me) and it's called Market. Still, three users of the same name does not a trademark situation make.

I thought it was the Marketplace too. That's what I've been using on the 360 and what Windows Mobile has always used though I assumed.

  • Alianora La Canta09/03/2011 at 22:59

Dear me. They can never do something the easy way can they?

It makes sense to the sorts of people who use them because people wanting apps for one device generally don't care about the others. So there's very little messing around with switching between totally different categories like there is on more generic sales sites.

  • Bassano09/03/2011 at 23:01

According to Wikipedia we're both wrong (but you were more right than me) and it's called Market. Still, three users of the same name does not a trademark situation make.

My point is, only one company is using the term 'App Store'

I suspect Pat is right and it will eventually become Apple App Store

The have Mac App Store now for their bigger hardware

iOS App Store doesn't quite have the same ring to it

  • Alianora La Canta09/03/2011 at 23:01

I thought it was the Marketplace too. That's what I've been using on the 360 and what Windows Mobile has always used though I assumed.

The switchover occurred at Windows 6.5. I've never used Marketplace because my PDA uses a previous OS (5.0) and therefore cannot use anything in Marketplace, only in the Apps Store.

Why are they fighting over that, it's a horrid name.... I hate the word store. What's wrong with marketplace? or them all using it or whatever. Seeing as the stuff isn't cross platform, the stores aren't in direct competition.

  • Alianora La Canta09/03/2011 at 23:04

They should use a more informal name for a place to shop. Something cool and unique, perhaps like a country that lots of people like.

    How about ice... place.

But it all runs through itunes, it's one page for apps and one for music, one films etc. I don't see it as that discrete. Why is just the apps bit seperate?

Not on the devices it isn't

    Separate icons

But it all runs through itunes, it's one page for apps and one for music, one films etc. I don't see it as that discrete. Why is just the apps bit seperate?

no. it's a separate piece of software.

  • Pat W09/03/2011 at 23:13

The more I think about it the more I realise it depends entirely on context.

If it is general conversation - Apple app store.

If it is conversationn about Apple/iPad - app store.

If I'm using iPad - app store.

If I'm using iTunes - iTunes store.

Anyway the British one should be called a shop not a store. That's more important than anything else. :p

  • Alison09/03/2011 at 23:13

    Separate icons

What's the need for that though? This all just looks like an argument that need not exist at all.

    Amen to that.

Because on a 3.5" device you don't want a complicated screen with tabs and labels

    Apps - App Store

    Music - iTunes

  • Mr C09/03/2011 at 23:15

no. it's a separate piece of software.

I thought it was very dry and I struggled to pay attention to it. Good information but Graham Goodwin isn't a Hindy or Dex when it comes to enthusiasm and it was mainly Hindy and Goodwin. Ant was on for a while, which was good. Needed Pruett I think.

  • Alianora La Canta09/03/2011 at 23:16

In some countries the law says they are the same thing. For example in Saudi Arabia you need to have a newspaper licence to write a blog.

Technically speaking you need a licence even in Italy. Not sure if anyone there follows that particular law, but hosting any form of web site is considered publishing and therefore a generic publishing licence is required (basically saying you won't deliberately break any publishing laws) before starting.

  • Alison09/03/2011 at 23:16

I guess it's all confused for them because no-one had their eye on the bigger picture as all the mobile devices/functionality was developed piecemeal.

Ah, OK. In that case I may download just for the Ant bits and hope next week's (which I will have to listen to) is better...

John Dagys will have team by team preview on the Speed site soon which I'm sure will be worth a read. It must be said I am a 'visual learner' so I pick things up much easier from reading than listening, I often lose focus when listening and have to skip back which I can't do live, obviously..

  • Pat W09/03/2011 at 23:20

no, but do apple have a clue what they're doing?

It sounds like none of the companies do.
