A great Spring Sunset near where I live...
Hey guys, did you enjoy your pancakes yesterday? Good, because today is the first day of lent, where you are supposed to give up something. Seeing as we have given up on F1 for months I think we are all ok though ;)
I once gave up chocolate when I was a kid – man it was difficult, and to make things worse, I ate like a pig on Easter Sunday!
Anyway, we have some F1 news for you, so have a look at the links I have in store for you today:
F1 News
Well, we had the first day of the final test today – where the biggest story seemed to be McLaren’s new nose. No, not the Comic Relief sketch, but a device to measure wing flexing, according to ScarbsF1…
Apparently Pirelli are going to be allowed to test experimental compounds during Friday Practice sessions in order to gather data, as they have not had any running in hot weather yet.
The FIA have announced that the decision on whether Bahrain will happen this year will be taken in May, along with some other confusing rule changes involving the pitlane and the safety car (no, I don’t understand why either)…
The UK website for the Senna movie has been launched - which comes out June 3rd (not quickly enough!) Chainbear has an excellent idea for the sequel too – and speaking of Back to the Future, here’s another trailer ;)
Christine has her driver and team rankings up – also including the lovely gesture by @MyTeamLotus to Rob Sinfield (@GrandPrixDiary), who was supposed to be on the Flight to Malaysia where Richard Branson was the stewardess, but he pulled out. Team Lotus are still going to take him to the Malaysian Grand Prix, which I reckon is really nice of them!
We have a lovely new toy in the Sidepodcast Playground with more to come – I really like the look of this…
The BBC have an F1 preview up which will shock you – it’s filmed in a studio so you can actually hear what they are saying, it’s not geo-locked and Eddie Jordan is mouthing off against McLaren (again…) Quite a decent job and I reckon they should have more studio time at the actual races too!
Some blogs for you
VivaF1 have a fantastic article about some of the shadier characters who have graced the F1 paddock.
Leigh was at Silverstone yesterday to see some F3 testing.
F1 Badger has a great article about the nearly men of F1.
Joe Saward talks about a day out helping up and coming drivers as part of the FIA Academy.
WTF1 had a circuit drawing competition – which you have to see the winner of!
Also Pat’s got his TMR Scores updated for the week – no picks this week but don’t forget to make them for next week. Also, every now and then I will write a blog post with some graphs, so you guys can see how you are tracking ;)
This is an awesome picture of the sun and a detached prominence – very cool!
How about a cool infographic of Doctor Who, including Sonic Screwdrivers!
Tomb Raider is coming back to the cinema as a ‘reboot’. I liked the first movie but the second was a bit boring…
There was a link in the daily the other day for a Traffic Simulator from Eyeteaguy – it’s a lot of fun and a neat little curiosity to play with…
I am starting to cycle to work – soon I shall be running too, and I am using an app for my iPhone called ‘Runkeeper’ to log my progress. I am slow at the moment but I am getting better already. You can track my progress here if you want. There are others blogging about their fitness routines too – Amy and Christine amongst others. Why not give it a go yourself?
Finally, a question for you to ponder. Who came first, the chicken or the egg? :D
See you in the comments guys ;)
Hello new daily :)
Hi Wednesday
Gizmodo doesn't seem to like direct linking, takes me to the main page I think
Worked for me?
If not try this: http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2011/03/delorean.jpg
Oddly it worked for me on the second try.. :)
I can't decide if that's weird or cool or weirdly cool
It's made from spare parts, thankfully ;)
Any way I need to sleep - better stay awake tomorrow as we have a department meeting ;)
Night.
fabulous linkage roundup mr g.
Thanks man. See you all in the morning.
Hello merry comments. I can't sleep so I've given up. Might just watch hot fuzz instead.
the Rugby Sevens are just behind the corner over here (that is the maddest of weekends in our city). the made-for-rugby commercials are starting to appear ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INIMb_D1PRE&feature=player_embedded
"I am starting to cycle to work – soon I shall be running too, and I am using an app for my iPhone called ‘Runkeeper’ to log my progress. I am slow at the moment but I am getting better already. Nice to see sidepodcasters doing fitness, this is really motivating. Going to hit the gym today. uhuhuhuhu I think I won't blog about it, but next week I'm going to start with badminton. I might write updates on this ... Am I going to be the Nadal of badminton? hahahaha But it is a good target & motivation! :D
Thanks Amanda - you should go for it too - it's hard work, but working towards a goal is challenging and fun. You really feel better afterwards too :)
By the way, I had an AWESOME ride to work this morning - five minutes quicker than last night and felt real good: http://runkeeper.com/user/RubberGoat/activity/27970811
On average I was 3km/h (and a whole gear) faster :D
for me biking to office would mean either a) go 5 mins, board ferry, cross harbour and then bike for 5 mins or b) venture into the hot polluted cross harbour tunnel (and that somehow negates the whole health improvement point :-) )
Ah very true. Gym for you then ;)
I am lucky in that there are loads of cycle lanes here and that there is a big park where I can go running - the only downside is that I have to join a gym in winter...
here we need to join the gym in the summer :-)
morning all
This may be the most depressing thing I have ever read:
I'd vote for Leona Lewis over Margaret Thatcher #justsaying ;)
who is Leona Lewis ?
Some XFactor winning singer or something, right?
Morning.
Did that come from a multiple choice question?
I've never heard of the founder of Mumsnet and didn't know the site was a big deal..
Yeah and was on the Olympic bus with Jimmy Page in the 'handover' bit at Beijing.
X-Factor singer.
Not publicly, but they do lots of work behind the scenes
Weird...
Gavin - you're comments weren't showing on page - I just had to leave SPC and come back on for your comments to appear
I thought it was a discussion forum.
That too, but they're involved in a number of women's campaigns
Quite open though, I mean I don't know where people live :)
Morning chaps :)
morning lukeh
oh, OK, that's why never heard of her :-)
hello
I didn't do anything, honest guv!
the lovely isabell read chrstine's tweets of the week: http://twitter.com/#!/IsabellDoreen/status/45380247708901377
*falls over in delight*
It's awesome when they do that :)
Fantastic! :D
but... f1 partners, way more exciting than f1 drivers.
aww yay! go ms Timo :)
for sure.
Have you seen the exchange between Gary Paffett and Jenson Button over Jessica's Twitter picture? Very funny!
nope?
Mentioned on the BBC Live Timing page. Starts here: http://twitter.com/#!/GaryPaffett/status/45423807372070912
First thing I saw on twitter this morning, really made me chuckle :)
hehe! busted!
Anyone else having a bit of problems commenting?
all good here. wassup?
seems to be a bit of lag between when posting the comment and it appearing, like the comment box wont disappear for a few seconds after the comment has posted, although that is taking a few seconds too
hmm, strange. seems quick for me.
Tis on the doohickey it's happening, silly old thing
Gavin's comments weren't showing up at all
here's a screengrab that hopefully shows what I mean with the delays, mr c
http://i56.tinypic.com/2roqg0m.jpg
hmm, i'll reboot the server. can't hurt, but i'm on ye olde and they're fine for me.
That happens a lot for me but it is fine now
Yeah I have that from time to time too... It tends to happen when my connection is slow.
server should be rebooted now, yell if it doesn't get any better.
Love it. :D Hahaha!
Your twitter still says 2010, Mr C. It's starting to stress me out *twitch*
From Adam C: Proton boss Sayed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir has become a director of Lotus Renault GP Ltd
So Eric reports to Dany and the Proton bosses. Eric's a great guy, but somehow, I don't see this ending well...

This wasn't going to end well the moment Proton thought bringing the Lotus name into F1 when it was already there...
This wasn't going to end well the moment Proton acknowledged tax payers money was been shovelled into a black hole (although they put it in a more kind fashion)
I missed that one - when did it happen?
A couple of months back
So a few months after the attempt to call Renault Lotus started. Which merely highlights how foolish Proton were to get into F1 when they had that sort of skeleton in the closet.
Aye - much of the project (including the other Proton projects) appear to be government backed and funded, despite Proton seemingly on the verge of collapse.
Fixed.
(Don't tell him I know the password).
#confidential
huh?
you saw nothing.
i never do. i best go to work.
Suzuka renewed to 2012
Other places get 3-year, 5-year, or even 10-year deals. Yet Suzuka only gets a 1-year deal?
Hmmm
I smell a rat :(
I had a quick dig earlier - Honda's other track, Motegi, is in financial trouble and may not host this year's IndyCar race.
Something's bubbling up here
Only Kamui can save them now.
And Infiniti. If they count.
Both of Honda's tracks in some difficulty?
That'll make Joe and Christine happy. :)
Finally!
For now. :)
Spanish Wednesday! http://sidepodcast.com/post/spanish-wednesday-9th-march-2011
ooh yay.
Before I forget, Andy Stobart is now in the F3 / GT media group. sadly, I didn't get to say hello
:/
As long as they have a car to drive with...
Yay for Andy!
Good on him!
I don't rate Liuzzi but I'm glad he got that drive and I think it will be good for the team too.
First run deferred by two days... not good.
Hiya again. Have been playing the Nintendo 3DS this morning and I must say technically it's really quite something. Not very good for my eyes though.
What were you playing?
I did not go running today as I wasn't feeling the bestest. I have now self diagnosed food poisoning so am heading to bed to sleep it off :)
Night all
I played around with the Mii stuff, Pilotwings 3D and I watched a video on it for the Legend of Zelda game. The final two were in 3D and it has such a profound effect considering you don't wear any glasses. Well, I do, but not 3d glasses I mean :)
For just a screen though it is quite something to look at. Hurts a bit though and made me a bit cross eyes but that's just because my eyes are annoying like that with 3D :(
Aww, feel better.
Aww thats a shame - did I jinx you by linking to it in the daily?
Hope you feel better soon...
Also you have to hold it at a certain angle to really get the effect, which is a bit annoying. So if a friend watches from the side it's just a bit of a blur. You can turn the 3D off but then it's just a DS :)
Really fun to play though.
Pilotwings and Zelda? Next you'll be saying you played Mario Kart and Pokemon... ;)
heh no I was already feeling a little niggly by the time the daily was published. It's just escalated to the point where half an hour ago I was like I THINK I'M DYING. Sleep will help :) #nothere
I have yet to hear anyone have a 3D story that doesn't involve headaches or feeling sick or painful eyes.
I don't think it's going to catch on :)
I would! There's a new Pokemon game out and everything!
#gottacatchthemall
Hehe. I guess I meant that Nintendo always release the same games for each system!
I'm not sure why we need 3D stuff in all honesty but I couldn't help but be impressed by how it worked. even if I looked confused and dazed :)
I hope not. 3D TV's are a daft idea.
It makes me laugh when football is on Sky and they're like, you can watch this game in 3D on channel so and so...
...or I could continue to sit here and just watch the game like people have been doing for centuries :)
They talk as if being in 3D is akin to being there when it clearly isn't.
Plus if i want to get a headache watching football I'll just watch a Wales game
Or Arsenal :P
I get none of the above - but can't see the difference between 3D and 2D on TVs (even the old version requiring those plastic red-green glasses was more realistic). Seems like a pointless technology.
Also picked up the BBC season preview and it's much, much more interesting than the F1 Racing one personally.
Plus it's cheaper...
A vital point to the comparison :)
Ha! http://twitpic.com/47sgqc
Hispania have just made the Liuzzi announcement "official". World shrugs shoulders in response.
I bet they miss Tabatha...
I think they made the best choice under the circumstances.
:D
I'm guessing they can't afford her anymore. ;)
Her, Bruno and Karun were the only good things about HRT and they lost them all. Silly team.
I thought Narain was doing a fine job as PR person.
;)
How about Liuzzi?
Maldonado's KERS is currently in a box at the side of the circuit for safety reasons. Oh dear...
Never been a fan.
He's only just arrived; bit difficult to tell how he and Colin will get on (given the latter can be slightly prickly)
I agree. Careless!
Meh. What's the big deal about him?
He comes with money and unlike the other candidates for Hispania at this point, possesses some skill. Even Mum remembered him... ...even if it was because, "Wasn't he the guy who kept being in crashes at the end?"
Not really demonstrating the skill there :)
He's skilled at being memorable ;)
I definitely agree he was probably the best option for HRT but I've just never rated him. He has always been a mid to lower team driver for me and it doesn't surprise me to see him at HRT. Perhaps a bit harsh because I do like Force India but even for them I never really thought he was good enough for FI.
I think he's always been faster than Klien, but I always thought Klien was the better allrounder. To be honest if I'm running Hispania I'd rather take an allrounder to help me sort out the car.
You reckon FIF1 outdeveloped him? (Tonio looked fine there in the beginning, but considerably less fine as things went on).
I would rather Liuzzi than Klien, just for the sake of Christine's sanity for what Klien did :)
I wonder what HRT would've been like if they had Klien and Bourdais.
I agree with this
Indeed he's a character, but he's not anything special.
Yeah I do. The team seemed to fall back a bit when he got a full time seat and I think they'll be a lot better now with Sutil and Di Resta even if the latter is a rookie.
Absolutely!
So that makes him a perfect fit for HRT if you follow that logic.
At the moment McLaren would not be within the 107% rule and neither would Virgin or Lotus.
That makes sense. If Hispania outdevelops Tonio, there will be pigs flying down the pitlane...
Can't read too much into the testing times, remember ;)
There already is - it's called the F-111 ;)
It does underline, however, the amount of difference there will be between a typical race lap and a good qualifier. Everyone will need to be on their toes on Saturdays...
I suppose it's going to lack the downforce to stay on the black stuff...
Whenever someone mentions that designation I'll always think of the Aardvark:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Dynamics_F-111_Aardvark
and not some poncy car.
I remember the same thing being said about Bourdais - a fundamentally quick driver, who simply couldn't keep up with the car changes when they happened.
Whenever I think of the F111, this comes to mind

Remember the space shuttle is due to land today. The first opportunity is at 11:57 and 44seconds Eastern / 16:57 44s UK. The link below is the landing blog which will keep you up to date with what is going on. You will get an hour's notice if a landing is to take place because that is when they have to make the de-orbit burn. This is just a short rocket blast that slows the shuttle enough for it to start falling out of the sky
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/launch/landing_blog.html
Hotel? maybe... Barbecue pit? DEFINITELY!
http://www.statesman.com/sports/formula1/track-site-plan-features-pit-for-barbecue-hotel-1307800.html
They have their priorities straight (and I'm being serious here).
I forgot!!
heh
13:16 Virgin's Mark Hendy reveals that the F1 powerbrokers are keeping an eye on us too:
"FOTA's finance working group is also following the test from a boardroom in Gatwick courtesy of AUTOSPORT."
http://live.autosport.com/commentary.php/id/315
they're getting no work done then - why is 'working group' always such an oxymoron
NASA TV has started coverage of the landing preparations. The shuttle has started aligning sensors which have to be in place 1 hour before the de-orbit burn.
Rather than watch on the NASA site I would watch at the link below because they do NASA TV better than NASA
http://spaceflightnow.com/shuttle/sts133/status.html
A pit?
Sounds like a job for Heikki
An Austin version of the Indy Snakepit?
Isn't it strange that we seem to know more about what is going to be at Austin than at Korea? :-)
HRT; now with belts made of shoelaces

Nice to see them partially hinting back to 18th century clothing there
Hiiiiiiiiiiii :)
I know they are racing on shoestring but that's ridiculous
and those logos look very cheap too..
It looks very 80s I guess.
Hi people.
Pirelli brought white-logo tyres too

Hey
when is it landing?
I meant Hey Alison. :D What's up?
16:57 and 44 seconds
ta.
and is christine fbfb'ing it?
Don't know. She forgot it was landing so who knows
Just enjoying an afternoon of freedom. My boss has a sickline again :(
hold on... i'm not sure the fbfb can countdown to partial minutes.
Joe or Shuttle. You choose.
gah!
Although Pt 1 is basically done.
go on then.
Afternoon everone... I have just discovered that my collegue Jeremy once had an e-mail from the King of Belgium...
How's everyone else doing?
boo
Awww. So no boss at the office, then?
Blimey, the FBFB works fast. http://factbytefactbox.com/live
are ya making a post?
Go for the de-orbit burn
Good grief.
:)
I'll take off my Joe-head and put on my space-head then.
Over its life Discovery has travelled 148,221,675 miles.
awww, you loves the fbfb. silly nasa messing up yer day.
Where did you get your super duper picture from?
Space coverage needs more Worzel Gummidge
http://nix.nasa.gov/
i think.
Hehehe I guess. I meant more like that I have to go in the rest of the week and do her job as well as mine. But I guess she isn't around annoying me so :P
although i do like this one: http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/524250main_s133e009053_hires.jpg
The shuttle landing blog is at the link below
I find the take off and landing for this mission really confusing because Steve Lindsey the head of the astronaut office is the shuttle commander. Normally he is the astronaut flying the shuttle training aircraft(STA) to assess weather and conditions. The STA is a Gulfstreem modified to fly like a brick just like the shuttle but it has engines to save them if they screw up a landing
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/launch/landing_blog.html
I just opened the link that you put up, Steven, while I had a moment at work, http://spaceflightnow.com/shuttle/sts133/status.html and I hadn't seen what time it was going to land. About a second after I opened it I saw something coming in to the shot from the right and I thought "oh, is that it???".
It was a crow.
Spaceflight Now have a twitter account giving updates
http://twitter.com/spaceflightnow/
I imagine the shuttle landing will be slightly more impressive than that.
That traffic simulator is awesome by the way!!
It was a pretty cool crow.

Hello all. I see I missed the shuttle landing but thanks to FBFB I know exactly what happened and have seen some great photos. Thanks :)
My day has gone well. I have an interview Friday 9.30 for a new temp job. Am hoping it goes ok.
is that some kind of modern illegal substance?
yay, but that's an early start.
As my current temp job starts at 8.00 every morning I'm looking forward to the lie in
oh!
I'm downloading new software to my iPod Touch (4.3?). Any ideas what new things I can expect?
it's out? how did i miss that?
one sec, me try.
Saw someone in the US mention it on Twitter so I clicked on the update button.
i know, i missed it too. :O wasn't supposed to be due til friday...
new features: personal hotspot, faster browsing... err.
:)
http://www.apple.com/ios/
Thank you
how long's your download gonna take?
Around an hour or so. Will download it in a bit. :)
hehe. have installed it, doesn't look any different.
why can't we get f1 like this?!
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/subscriptions/appletv.jsp?&vbID=appletv
Enjoy select Spring Training games and a full slate of regular season games on Apple TV. Regular Season features include:
- HD Quality (where available)
- LIVE and archived games
also, nba league too: https://ilp.nba.com/nbalp/secure/registerform
love the 'key plays on demand' feature. and all on your ipad or apple tv!
You should see the MLB site's live coverage of a game. They have a graphic that shows every pitch as it happens and gives data for spin etc. I have no idea how they get such accurate date. It's quite incredible
They actually draw the path of the ball showing where it left the pitcher's hand how it moves in the air and where it passes threw the strike zone.
i need to see that. also, check out this mulitscreen demo: http://ilp.nba.com/nbalp/demo.jsp
Sounds like Hawkeye in cricket?
Evening.
You can go back to the start of a game if you arrive late. No hanging about trying not to find out the result.
Never seen that
That is a very impressive way to watch sport. Just shows how far behind F1 is. It can claim to be high tech but it isn't even close
agreed. i'm stunned.
I'm really disappointed! For some reason I had it in my head that I got paid tomorrow. I don't.
£20 a month, i'm tempted to take up watching, just so i can play.
#sidepodspace
Yes there is even more. On the 19th of March the full moon will appear bigger than at any tie for 20 years
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/38/20110309/tsc-world-to-see-biggest-full-moon-in-tw-98fda55.html
That's insane.
I can't even imagine having that access to F1. We could be zipping around the each pit area, or each corner, and then throw in the side cameras like in Indy...and oh.. *swoons*
*to each pit area
plus instant replay.

:D
They have it in tennis too
Pat beat me to it!
The baseball thing is all graphics and no live action. As well as drawing the path of the ball it gives a list of stats I don't pretend to understand explaining what happened
Seems like both of them were sort of what we were promised in F1 a year or more ago, they tried it once at the first Abu Dhabi race then dropped it. Showing the path of cars through an apex.
There are baseball games in play now.
Have a look at the information available
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2011_03_09_phimlb_detmlb_1&mode=gameday
MR C!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Took me a while but
And. Cheeky! :)
I would pick a game where they were between innings then did a pitcher change.
*pretends to understand*
In technical terms absolutely nothing is happening
And the sodding thing I wanted to show is not being used because it is a pre-season game I assume.
Just can't win
Dr Who news http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/03/09/doctor-who-premiere-date/ #spoilers Shows broadcast date for BBC America. I'm assuming the UK air date is the same.
The peoblem is F1 is a sponsor driven sport, unlike the US its not in the teams or the circuit advertisers interests to let fans customize which sponsors they can see.
And of course you have the issue of multiple broadcast rights holders, commentators and legal environments which make it harder.
...And F1 only just got HD!
The trouble is they seem to equate broadcast rights with online rights, or maybe they sell them together.
I think next time the deals are done there should be a clause to say broadcasters can stream it but F1.com will also offer a live stream, even if it has no commentary, or their own.
In some countries the law says they are the same thing. For example in Saudi Arabia you need to have a newspaper licence to write a blog.
I wonder how much less they would get for the rights? The only option may be to keep the rights value up by making the online stream either very expensive or ad intrusive, both of which could probably make it fail
Let's not use the Middle East as an average exmple shall we :D
I think using Saudi as an example of lawmaking is probably not a good idea :)
I don't think their business model of making everything ridiculously expensive will last a great deal longer.
Chinas laws arent that far away from that either
Agreed

The bit I wanted to show you wasn't working. It is the best bit of the whole thing. What you have there is very poor compared to a proper game.
Their F1 season preview tomorrow night may or may not be worth a listen..
there's so much to click, my finger got tired!
Do you get finger clicking RSI too???
ahh, no. was just joking.
Normally on the graphic that shows you the batter you will see where all the pitches he has faced as circles where they went through the strike zone. They are coloured differently for strike/ball/hit etc. The last/current pitch has the path drawn on screen and you get the stats like speed, spin, pitch factor(no idea).
In the box that shows the various innings/batters etc below that you can see those stats for every pitch in the match.
there should be laws against cooking so much flapjack.
*rolls over and has a sleep*
anyone want some?

has this been plugged yet? it's an amazing read: http://www.racecar-engineering.com/articles/nascar/the-secrets-of-laurel-hill/
Laurel Hill’s current configuration includes a 460m acceleration zone, giving a potential test speed of 100mph, but it can easily be reconfigured to allow for test speeds of 120–130mph. Of course, with cars running at speeds of up to 130mph, you need space for them to slow down again and, as the deceleration zone doubles up as the acceleration zone for the return run at Ganassi’s tunnel, it is also around 460m long.

Has Nick complained to you all about his finger. I've never seen anything like it. Surely using a mouse shouldn't do that to your hand....??
Probably not.
That has been floating around for the past couple of years. I have seem most of the pics before too
saw that mentioned, not read it yet
RCE broke the story in 07 i think. they have more info now.
no idea what you mean, what's happened?
His right index finger keeps puffing up to twice its normal size. He claims this is some kind of computer related injury....
Computer related diagnosis more like ;)
never heard of that. have you googled for evidence? i know guitar players who get RSI and can't play, but their fingers don't puff up.
That is why they are using identical pics
It was mostly to make up for the fact I forgot about pancakes.
Could be Lupus
#HouseMD
He says it's from clicking the mouse button which doesn't seem strenuous to me particularly but hey.... :P
rsi isn't strenuous, it's repetitive.
Does he use a wrist rest, maybe he should anyway
He should stop pointing the finger at people.
he works on spreadsheets i think. just navigate with the keyboard.
Yeah he bought a new mouse that you click with your thumb. We'll see if it goes away. I'm not totally convinced clicking a mouse could do that to your finger?
What if it's the finger he rants with, it could sap his powers
Love it.
I should completely have made him give up twitter for lent. If only I'd thought of this last week.
Thumb mouse, the cheaper alternative to medical advice
Lent starts today, it's not too late
You could be doing humanity a favour
Yeah he's not gonna go for it though. I'd need to change his password or something. Willpower is not Nick's strong point :D
It's 100 times worse since he got the iphone. He gets withdrawal while going on the underground now which I think is pretty worrying :P
He needs to go to the Tweety Ford Clinic
No way mouse clicking could do that
RG is quiet tonight.
I guess commenting while biting your nails is difficult
Spurs?
It's never Lupus (except the one time when it was)
I'm lurking, best not to comment.
1-0 up on aggregate against Milan with half an hour to go.
Live on ITV1
are you winning or losing?
#confidential
Good luck
Hah. Please don't suggest more lethal illnesses he could have in front of him. He's already a snake oil salesman's dream.
Tell him you think he is allergic to snake oil.
He'd be down the pharmacy looking for a remedy.
Well done Spurs. Great achievement
same result?
What have they done?
1-0 after 2 games. Now in the last 8 of the Champions League
I'll be with you in a minute, just need to get some more oxygen and put my heart away from my mouth.
Looks like someone is happy

I think everyone on my street is updating their iDevice OS. my Internet has crashed, too many half gb files being downloaded simultaneously most likely
I have updated but I only see a wireless hotspot in the menu as a new feature...
iTunes airsharing?
He rest is just improvements I think
And so to bed. Goodnight to one & all
goodnight Janna
See ya.
Night Janna
I'll wait until the morning.
Night Janna
Gosh it was exciting to wake up this morning, my first thought was 'hooray, I actually fell asleep!'
I feel much better though so here I am at work. Bah.
Aww, yay for feeling better though!
and theres only one more day to go then its a 3 day weekend. I like that.
Jealous!! :D
That can only help the situation :)
my four day week is then followed by a three day week. Thank you Formula 1 :D
In the stupidity that is the legal battle for the Trademark of the term 'App Store' between Apple & Microsoft: Microsoft are complaining that Apple's response is written in too small a font!
Seriously :D
it was on paper?!
iCapsLock - making typing LARGER THAN LIFE.
iMagnifyingGlass, surely?
Court documents do tend to be
iWouldassumeso.
"Microsoft has requested that Apple be required to refile its motion in compliance with the length and font size requirements and without introducing any new material in support of its argument."
No legal objection 1.01 for Apple I assume
needs an upgrade to Magnifying Glass 2011 Extended Server Edition (for Teachers and Mums).
Legally it has to be. Electronic files are too easy to change by determined hackers.
With added AntiDon'tGiveMeThatBackChat protection
tippex?
:D
Essentially. MS say 'App Store' is a generic term [erm, who invented it?]
Whilst Apple's response is: And 'Windows' isn't?
Someone change the font from 12 to 100
hehehe.
It's slightly easy to spot the correction fluid and theoretically possible to remove it without removing the words underneath.
Probably Microsoft because it's had one since Windows CE.
That's gone 21st century too now. Everyone has a mouse on their desk
http://www.office365.co.uk/im/pim/524237.jpg
Microsoft are right.
'Windows' is no different to 'App Store'. But the trademarks should be 'Apple App Store' (or whatever) and 'Microsoft Windows', not 'App Store' and 'Windows'.
But was it called 'App Store'
MS have always used 'Programs' and Apple 'Applications'
Apple were the first to coin the phrase App, as far as I know
:D
Unfortunately, yes...
there's an app for that. etc.
Precisely
Absolutely right and I agree if MS were to have a store like that, it shouldn't be called an App Store because it just doesn't fit the way they do things, but the term itself should be left open for others.
Looks like Google beat both Apple and Microsoft by two months (Google in February 2006, Microsoft in April 2006 and Apple at about the same time as Microsoft).
MS has had an App store since 2008.
But what is it called?
I agree
Depends on which bit of the empire you want an app for. Microsoft Apps does portable applications for its older phone OSs (including my PDA). Zune Apps does Zune-specific stuff. Office Web Apps does Office. Windows Phone Marketplace does Windows Phone-specific stuff. And so on and so forth.
Also, Android has an apps store. So I can definitely understand Microsoft's point of view on this legal matter (for once).
No. They have Marketplace
This is the whole legal arguement
We all use Hoover but it's a trademark
Dear me. They can never do something the easy way can they?
Heh does this make them regret crushing everyone else when they had a total monopoly? It's hard to have any sympathy for them.
According to Wikipedia we're both wrong (but you were more right than me) and it's called Market. Still, three users of the same name does not a trademark situation make.
I thought it was the Marketplace too. That's what I've been using on the 360 and what Windows Mobile has always used though I assumed.
It makes sense to the sorts of people who use them because people wanting apps for one device generally don't care about the others. So there's very little messing around with switching between totally different categories like there is on more generic sales sites.
My point is, only one company is using the term 'App Store'
I suspect Pat is right and it will eventually become Apple App Store
The have Mac App Store now for their bigger hardware
iOS App Store doesn't quite have the same ring to it
The switchover occurred at Windows 6.5. I've never used Marketplace because my PDA uses a previous OS (5.0) and therefore cannot use anything in Marketplace, only in the Apps Store.
bit of a different ping but hopefully still interesting PING
http://toata.wordpress.com/2011/03/09/166-we-can-be-heroes/
Why are they fighting over that, it's a horrid name.... I hate the word store. What's wrong with marketplace? or them all using it or whatever. Seeing as the stuff isn't cross platform, the stores aren't in direct competition.
If they aren't, they should be. Even I tend to see this as karma...
They should use a more informal name for a place to shop. Something cool and unique, perhaps like a country that lots of people like.
How about ice... place.
Trademarks are like that
Ferrari trucks for example
:)
Ye Olde Webb Shoppe.
I just wish people could be a bit less petty sometimes.
Non-Appleheads call it that already don't they, or is it just me? It's probably just me.
Yes please, if there's any left :D
I seem to unknowingly just call it itunes... no idea why. I think it's because that;s where I most commonly use it.
Pass. Non-Apple folk that have iPods or Phones [but not the computers] call it the App Store as far as I know
I think if someone suggested an app store, I'd go to whatever online shop for applications that was relevant to the device I owned.
dunno. it's app store to me, that's what's it's called in my menu.
This too. If they want a unique name just call it all the iStore
It's specifically for Apps
They also have the iBookstore & iTunes
I wanted to listen to that but I was stuck in Italian class (amusing considering the whole reason I care enough about ILMC to want to listen to it is because of an Italian driver). Was it any good?
True.
PING: http://sidepodcast.com/post/an-aside-with-joe-you-cant-make-an-interesting-sport-without-good-characters
But it all runs through itunes, it's one page for apps and one for music, one films etc. I don't see it as that discrete. Why is just the apps bit seperate?
Not on the devices it isn't
Separate icons
no. it's a separate piece of software.
The more I think about it the more I realise it depends entirely on context.
If it is general conversation - Apple app store.
If it is conversationn about Apple/iPad - app store.
If I'm using iPad - app store.
If I'm using iTunes - iTunes store.
Anyway the British one should be called a shop not a store. That's more important than anything else. :p
What's the need for that though? This all just looks like an argument that need not exist at all.
Amen to that.
Because on a 3.5" device you don't want a complicated screen with tabs and labels
Apps - App Store
Music - iTunes
although on this page, apple call this app store the mac app store: http://www.apple.com/mac/app-store/
*shrugs*
I thought it was very dry and I struggled to pay attention to it. Good information but Graham Goodwin isn't a Hindy or Dex when it comes to enthusiasm and it was mainly Hindy and Goodwin. Ant was on for a while, which was good. Needed Pruett I think.
Technically speaking you need a licence even in Italy. Not sure if anyone there follows that particular law, but hosting any form of web site is considered publishing and therefore a generic publishing licence is required (basically saying you won't deliberately break any publishing laws) before starting.
Because their "app store" is just stuff for iphone/pod/pad?
That's not for mobile devices though and needs to be differentiated accordingly
Yes
but... on my mac. the main menu link that reads "app store", opens that application!!
Ah, OK. In that case I may download just for the Ant bits and hope next week's (which I will have to listen to) is better...
on my machine. app store points to the store just for mac software, not iphone stuff.
Oh, I gotcha. That's hardly gonna be an issue for Windows users though :D
no, but do apple have a clue what they're doing?
I guess it's all confused for them because no-one had their eye on the bigger picture as all the mobile devices/functionality was developed piecemeal.
John Dagys will have team by team preview on the Speed site soon which I'm sure will be worth a read. It must be said I am a 'visual learner' so I pick things up much easier from reading than listening, I often lose focus when listening and have to skip back which I can't do live, obviously..
It sounds like none of the companies do.
Hence MS trying to resist the trademark application and the use of overly large fonts
I would expect it to be part of Michaelsoft Binbows
When Steve eventually goes, they should rename Apps to Jobs, in his honour
"There's a Job for that"
It had to come up :D
That's probably just a lawyer's excuse to buy more time
I agree but lawyers are like that so it's to be expected
Hehehehe, I love this little Radiohead skit on BBC comedy
http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/clips/p00fhw6y/spout_radiohead_fan_speaks_out/
:D
Off to bed for me. Till tomorrow folks
Night mr bassano
Bye
This is strange. It's taking 10 minutes for comments to appear in the Dashboard...
odd. people were having issues this morning but it's perfect here.
Ha that's brilliant :) :)
I have a bad cough and it's keeping me up. My housemate just knocked on my door to check I hadn't coughed myself to death.... :( BOOOO
Nice to see Mike Conway is back on the track after his huge accident last year
