Hello everyone. Today I have a few bits of news, some podcast links, and a few bits of music to check out.

F1 News

Testing continued in Barcelona. I'm fed up with testing though, perhaps it is because Bahrain was supposed to be this weekend and I've spent months building up to this week as the start of the season, but I just can't wait any longer. I just want the season to start now! Christine and Leigh have wrap-ups.

Speaking of Leigh's site, do check elsewhere there for testing results from Formula 3 and GP3. I liked this post in particular. He'll be covering British F3 from the circuits themselves this year.

Pedro de la Rosa has rejoined McLaren as 3rd driver after leaving Pirelli, shunting Gary Paffett back down to simulation work. I wonder if Pedro will be getting a Christmas card from Gary this year.

But the biggest news of the day? An Aside With Joe makes a return! It is a great show too, and what's more, there's a 2nd part to come. If after that you need more journo chat and you missed it last week, do check out the conversation with Naoise from Manipe F1.

Other Racing

News in brief from elsewhere:

European teams have arrived in America in readiness for the 12 Hours of Sebring next weekend. If you're curious about how racecars outside F1 are freighted around the world, take a look: Oreca; Rebellion; unloading.

Mike Conway made his return to the IndyCar cockpit with his new team Andretti Autosport in a test on the short course at Sebring. Read his thoughts here. Word is he was fastest today unofficially. Sebastian Bourdais was there too.

Meanwhile the IndyCar teams are trying to convince Firestone not to quit. I hope they succeed or another quality supplier like Michelin comes in instead.

Racecar Engineering have a nice piece about Chip Ganassi Racing's wind tunnel, which is housed in an actual abandoned tunnel! Completely separately, if like me you like the Retronaut site, when you've watched the YouTube video do link through to the clips of the abandoned Turnpike, and the 1953 video of the drive along the road. At least as fascinating as the wind tunnel, but in a very different way.

The final bit of IndyCar news is that they are looking to bring in NASCAR's "lucky dog" free pass to give a lap back to the first car a lap down in each caution period. Not one single fan on Twitter tonight is favour of this move, myself included. Nobody should be given a lap back for free. In positive news the restart line at Indy will be moved to 300yds from the flag stand rather than being way off at turn 3, which should help keep the field bunched and racy on restarts.

This Week's Racing

Slim pickings this weekend, obviously this was the week we originally expected the Bahrain GP to take place. The only thing happening is the continuation of the F1 test, and NASCAR Trucks are at Darlington on Saturday night (I'm sure Nelson Piquet Jr will be there). The other two NASCAR series aren't running. A great week to take a break and do something else!

Things really pick up next weekend when we have the 12 Hours of Sebring, NASCAR at Bristol (including DP's debut at the track in the Nationwide event), MotoGP at Qatar, and GP2 at Imola. The week after that? F1 and IndyCar.

Music

I love this video. The song may not be the most uplifting ever but it is a good one and I really like it. The real reason for posting it is the video which I've liked for a long time. You might want to listen to the earlier version linked below, before this one.

Two weeks ago following my last Daily, Mr C and I had a discussion about the production of music. The interesting thing is this version above is not the first version I heard of this song. It comes from his 2009 album 'Bears', but for two years beforehand I (and a small group of us) had been listening to the original release - and the original version of the video - from his 2007 EP 'Sticker, Star and Tape'. The new version came as something as a shock and I didn't like it for ages, it was good but it just wasn't the same, but what's weird is that I've just listened to both back-to-back after not hearing either for a few months and I now prefer the 2009 version. How odd!

If you like this do also check out Carbon Dating. I can't find the 2009 version but for this song it goes the other way, I prefer the 2007 version here. (the YouTube uploader has confusingly stuck the 2009 album cover on to that video).

You can buy both the 2009 album on iTunes or via his site for £6, and the 2007 EP (the red one) via his site for £4. DO IT.

Sadly, Sam has given up making music. I'd seen him live just the once, that was in a pub in Weymouth in December 2006. After seeing him there I thought he'd be big, then when 'Bears' came out I thought it would make him huge. It got him noticed by the BBC and the title track was used on an ep of 'Chuck', but it didn't seem to get the attention he deserved, so tired of fighting a losing battle he just stopped. A loss to music, I sometimes wonder what he's doing now..

Lukeh found this great sketch about Radiohead (might be geolocked?) and see his post about his heroes too.

That's all from me, I'll leave you with this great quote posted on Giggles' blog. Have a great day!

    Morning.

Here's a great article about the use of carbon fibre in road cars and it's birth in F1: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12691062

Was the MP4/1 the first F1 car to be made of carbon fibre? I thought that Lotus had tried it before too?

and 30 years on the carbon fibre made it to such high tech products as keychains, mousepads ... :-)

07:57 But everyone enjoying the weather today should bear this news from @radarguruf1 in mind: "Bad news on the horizon. Rain still on course for late Fri afternoon. Saturday washout, torrential rain - up to 100mm"

    (form live autosport)

hm, I wonder if reading this forecast McLaren people still think that skipping today and staying on for Saturday instead is better use of their resources ...

Could this story get any more Australian? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12696091

A miner was fishing in a creek, gets attacked by a crocodile who bites off his finger, calls over to his mate at the pub who beats off the croc with a stick!

I think it is more about the stock markets going up last year after the crisis, and so paper wealth is up ...

Aye, all is decent here. Just busying away.

  • RubberGoat10/03/2011 at 09:24

    Yikes!

Let's hope it stops - it's been very cold lately but my clothing seems to protect me quite well. I'm wearing Ski Pants, a tee shirt, a thin jersey and a windbreaker.

Only problem is that I have a great tailwind travelling to work, which means I have a wicked headwind on the way home...

"I think at the moment it is difficult to judge. I reckon who is looking pretty strong of the midfield and we won't catch is probably Toro Rosso, which is going very well from the beginning of the winter testing.

"McLaren is not doing very well but still obviously ahead of us - the question mark is Sauber and Force India – those teams are the ones that probably we might be fighting with. But it is obviously too early to say.

"I am confident we can still be in the midfield."

I do wish (Team) Lotus well but judging from what they have shown so far in testing I think they are a bit too optimistic ...

If Lotus don't run in the midfield this year and score points then they can call the year a failure.

If Lotus don't run in the midfield this year and score points then they can call the year a failure.

I do see them at the tail of the midfield and scoring the odd point, but not necessarily being competitive with Sauber / Williams, etc...

well, they considered their 2010 season success... but at the beginning they expected to be fighting with the back of the midfield towards the end of the season. never happened

Agree. With RBR back end and nice tidy car they should jump forward.

Doesn't necessarily apply to Virgin though, with their lack of resources. They ought to be closer to the pack than before at the very least but their testing looks shockingly slow to me.

they should jump forward and they probably will. but can they jump ahead 3 secs more than Force India or Sauber ?

P.S. that gearbox is giving them some headaches this week in Barcelona

I thought the 3+sec was to the leaders. They were maybe 2s behind the midpack. They ought to be able to cross most of that gap. I'm not really expecting them to beat hte others on pace.

it's a tough ask if Toro Rosso is as quick as it looks. I think Sauber look all right which could just leave Force India at the back of the midpack - will running with them be enough to score points?

I really really hope the tyres make the racing better - and the limited running leaves more allowance for mistakes in car setups etc.

OK, 2 secs to the end of the midfield, still a lot considering that Force India and Saueber and Toro Rosso all also improve ...

well this season may not be only about the raw speed ... the tyres and strategies can mix it a bit. I think as long as a team has a car that has enough pace and reliability to stay on the same lap as point scoring cars, the points are possible

@WilliamsF1Team Just a minor problem caused us to stop out on track which is now fixed - not a KERS problem, as not running this today.

Is the fact that it isn't KERS because KERS is not working at all supposed to be reassuring?

  • RubberGoat10/03/2011 at 12:23

Yeah of course, there's some fabulous visual tweaks and whatnot, but you always get that few that spoil it for everyone else that take advantage of a loophole in the game and use it to their advantage. As the game is moddable on PC it's a lot easier to get into than the console ones.

How can they reveal the 2011 game already? Surely it's not even in Alpha stage yet?

They will have to make big improvements I reckon - they lost a lot of fans with the way they released and handled the game.

  • Leigh O'Gorman10/03/2011 at 12:44

Yeah, I'll be honest the multiplayer experience I have had with that game has been poor.

  • Lukeh10/03/2011 at 12:46

How can they reveal the 2011 game already? Surely it's not even in Alpha stage yet?

I think it'll just be concept art and what features the game will include, nothing more than that. I'm convinced they'll put a lot more effort into the testing after the problems it came with.

Sadly that is a common case in modern day games though - in the Playstation1 era with no internet a game was tested indepth so it didn't ship with bugs. Now with the broadband era we're in and ease of downloading patches you find the vast majority of console based games will end up being patched. Which can be pretty annoying.

  • Lukeh10/03/2011 at 12:46

Yeah, I'll be honest the multiplayer experience I have had with that game has been poor.

I only play it online with friends. It's the same with GT5, Forza, etc, as every time I play a public online racing game it ends up being a crash fest.

I was thinking about this the other day.

In the 80's and 90's, most games were made as a labour of love and only released when they are finished. Nowadays games have to be released on time, so they end up half finished and so buggy they're unplayable. Then they finish the other half off and sell it to you as DLC!

  • RubberGoat10/03/2011 at 12:48

That's where iRacing is brilliant - the only problem then is that you end up last because everyone else practices for 1000 hours and is 5 seconds a lap faster!

  • Lukeh10/03/2011 at 12:49

Don;t get me wrong games have always come with the odd bug here and there but it's much more evident in modern games as they can just patch them up willy nilly. DLC is a whole other argument though that I'm tempted to blog about now I've got myself talking about it :)

  • Nick10/03/2011 at 12:49

It will be the same game engine as this year i expect, they probably wont tweak the graphics too much either beyond obvious livery /track updates etc.

I would expect the main changes will be new features and AI improvements

  • Nick10/03/2011 at 12:51

In the 80s and 90s it was so much cheaper though, there is probably as much code in 1 GT5 car as there was in the whole of a game in that era

  • Lukeh10/03/2011 at 12:51

As long as they included new stuff and tweaked the problems and whatnot that plauged 2010 that wouldn't be a problem to me. I thought visually the game looked stunning and the engine was pretty solid too. Perhaps take out that odd yellow filter though as people have done with the PC mods :)

  • Lukeh10/03/2011 at 12:53

True but even in GT5's case it was in development for 5 years and it still came out with problems and missing features. If you don't have an internet connection for your PS3 you've missed out on 5 or 6 major updates and gameplay additions since the release. It's a bit unfair expecting everyone to have access.

  • Leigh O'Gorman10/03/2011 at 12:54

It's too serious for me, once you get past the rookie levels. I'm decent at driving games but I haven't got a chance against that lot.

If it is, then we are in trouble. The patch did not fix the game as well as expected (the bloody pitstop bug is still there!) so I expect there to be a lot of bugs still.

its not as bad though, so they know what causes it. Fixing it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

the new features for gameplay will be the adjustable rear wing (which I bet there will be an AI bug ;)), the safety car maybe along with general tweeks.

Split screen does need to be included, I'd take a game with bugs so long as that is there. heh.

  • RubberGoat10/03/2011 at 13:04

They don't have the budget. They reckon they spent most of last year fixing problems rather than development.

Agreed. I've only started to enjoy that part of the game now I'm driving a Red Bull with fuel and tyre sim on, resulting in closer racing as I don't think the Red Bull is the fastest in my current season. Although on tracks where I have a good setup I can still beat the AI fairly easily on the hardest difficulty.

In the end I fudged it and went with my gut feelings, which thankfully were ok: http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2010/03/03/barcelona-testing-summary-2010/

I just had a very Mr C style situation. We've been having server issues at work so I've been having to get up early but this morning I had to get up early and then go to work afterwards and so because I didn't want to wake Katherine I ended up getting dressed exclusively from clothes that had dried overnight on the drying rack. Which meant that I was dressed down on a Thursday. The power of the being dressed down has been attempting to convince me, all day that it is a Friday... We're not doing very well on this session-running business. Sergio Perez caused a red flag (according to Autosport's Twitter) before Autosport's live feed had chance to say the track was open again!

  • Alianora La Canta10/03/2011 at 15:49

Green flag again, as Perez appears to have got his car moving again.

  • Bassano10/03/2011 at 17:51

I want to buy a CD for a friend [don't go there, very un#MFC] but it needed to be convenient. i.e. on the way home

I'll pop into Sainsbury's, they sell CDs, I told myself

Alas, if it's in the Top 100 you're fine but if it came out this week - no dice

Surely that's a big week for new releases?

  • Bassano10/03/2011 at 17:53

Now, I actually have to think about how I can achieve this strange practice of physical media acquirement before Sunday

I heard it was trending. Turned out to be 'a suspect package'

I have just spent some time to add a comment for Another F1 Podcast's Guatemalan's iTunes review page.

Do you need a Guatemalen iTunes account?

    I wonder if there's a Bhutan page

  • Alex Andronov10/03/2011 at 18:18

I've been through that process before

Maybe one person per week should do one :)

  • Bassano10/03/2011 at 18:22

So, Alex. Have you definitely decided you're going for iPad 2 and if so, which one?

  • RubberGoat10/03/2011 at 18:32

I should do the Danish one, in Danish!

  • Alex Andronov10/03/2011 at 18:32

So, Alex. Have you definitely decided you're going for iPad 2 and if so, which one?

I think so. But I really don't know which one. I'm thinking of waiting to decide until they are out in the states.

Yes you do... And it's a pain to set up...

  • Bassano10/03/2011 at 18:35

How did you do that without a non-Guatemalan credit card?

Some accounts don't require a cc number.

The US never used to. Designed so you could top up with vouchers and gift cards or free stuff only. Need to research an address though

  • Bassano10/03/2011 at 18:40

There was F1 Panda News today!

    Was this already reported?

  • Alex Andronov10/03/2011 at 18:42

How did you do that without a non-Guatemalan credit card?

    Here's the trick.

    1) Sign out

    2) Scroll down to the bottom of the iTunes store and press the flag

    3) Choose the country you want

    4) Attempt to download one of the free apps in the store

    5) It will say you need an account

    6) Sign up with a fake e-mail but one you can access you will need to click on the verify link on the relevant iTunes computer

    7) Sign in

    8) post the review

  • Alex Andronov10/03/2011 at 18:45

Sorry and at the credit card stage choose none. Because it's a free app they will let you choose none

  • Bassano10/03/2011 at 18:45

    8) post the review

Well, i think we should find someone to do one each day until it's mentioned on the podcast.

    Every review must mention SPC

He called one Stinky and he expects it to stick around?

  • Alison10/03/2011 at 18:59

    Doesn't sound very 'fixed' :D

I use one eye for distance and the other eye for looking at things closeby. My nearby vision eye in particular can't focus on anything further away than about the length of my arm.

So erm as long as I don't get poked in the eye, my vision is great. I tried wearing contacts for several months to try and make my eyes behave normally but it's been so long they've been doing that, my brain can't hack it at all.

  • Mr C10/03/2011 at 18:59

I imagine putting your fingers in your eye takes some getting used to as well

I've never understood that. Someone can't see well or judge distance so you ask them to poke their eye until something surely hard to see is attached to it...

  • Alison10/03/2011 at 19:02

I've never understood that. Someone can't see well or judge distance so you ask them to poke their eye until something surely hard to see is attached to it...

You don't need to look to put them in. You try and focus vaguely into the distance and then trust your fingers to know where your eye is.

Most of my friends send FB messages rather than emails now - but then we all seem to have smartphones too...

If I'm not on facebook then my sister and her husband (who knows and has worked with several Nascar drivers) won't see me making fun of Nascar.

So I have to stay on FB :)

I've been thinking about it and I find I use different communications for different groups. I call my Mum and put info on FB I want her & friends who aren't local to know. My local friends I text. My sister I text, tweet, e-mail, FB (whatever). Sidepodpeeps I either comment or twitter.

The lines are blurred but that's basically how I use the various methods.

    #sidepodspace

There is some great space stuff happening just now but have never been discussed here because no people are involved in going anywhere.

The two Voyager spacecraft have been in space for around 30 years now and

are near the heliosheath. In effect they are still feeling the sun's influence. After all that time they have not reached inter-stellar space. They are collecting some good information on what happens out there and despite being 1960s and 70s technology they are still working and responding to commands

    http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/voyager/voyager20110308.html

The MESSENGER (their CAPS) has been whizzing around the inner solar system since 2004 and is just about to insert itself in an orbit around Mercury. I can't wait to see what comes back from this mission

    http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/messenger/media/MESSENGERPoisedInsertion.html

The MRO - Mars reconnaissance orbiter is approaching its 5th anniversary of its arrival in Mars orbit. It has sent back all sorts of fascinating data. We have learned a lot about Mars from it and it has sent 70000 photos

    http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/MRO/news/mro20110309b.html

NASA has all sorts of other missions that are equally fascinating but because there are no people whizzing around in them no-one talks about them.

My favourite is the Cassin-Huygens mission which has been zipping round Saturn and its moons for the last few years. It has generated thousands of incredible photos and revealed new things like icy volcanoes on at least one of the moons. Imagine very cold Slush Puppy volcanoes.

Europa and Titan are probably the best options for life. I think we are going to end up finding bacteria all over the place including on some of those moons round Jupiter that get squished by gravity so have an ice crust but are warmer underneath f

I've been playing with it for however long, half an hour or whatever. it's quite addictive, but... for the piano all it's done is make me desperately want a full size piano.

For the guitar, which I can barely scrape a tune on, it's magical. For the piano which I am a bit better at, it makes me crave the real thing.

    Interesting times in iPad-land.

OK, would be easier if you used a column (So I can easily make a pivot table out of it) but then it's no bother to me - it would just take a bit longer, that's all.

Not sure yet. Looks like MotorsTV might be down for ALMS (a week behind again) but the ILMC may go to Eurosport. Rumour from the RLM forum is that ILMC takes precedence so expect Eurosport, but might only be start/finish and a few updates.

americanlemans.com ought to have web streaming available to all. If that fails, RLM for radio-only, old-school like how I followed it in 2003 or so..

This space stuff just never stops this week.

The crawler that transports the shuttle stack to the launch pad has just arrived under the shuttle. Once they get the shuttle properly mounted on it they will take it the 6 miles to the pad. It is on NASA TV but it's dark and nothing is happening so best give it a miss.

There are four TBC rounds, but the races in Monza, Portimao and later the Nurburgring have disappeared, but I can't any announcement.

Surely it isn't intended for serious work.

By the looks of the video, there's a dude plugging in a guitar into the iPad and then recording a song...

    New Zealand?

That has to be Hampton Downs...

Sounds like A1GP before it went pop

Oh I hope not. Apparently the SFO are investigating Tony Teixera (the series boss of A1GP) for millions of pounds of fraud...

I didn't realise Smolensk had a track of any certification. "Middle East" and "New Zealand" are quite vague

Only $400 million - not much you understand

hard to say. i assume it isn't, given it's missing some major features and it costs so little. logic pro costs £417.00, garageband on the ipad £2.99.

you'll get a handful of bands making viral videos just for publicity, but i can't see a pro users finding much to get excited about.

New Zealand's only interest is Chris Van Der Drift. Ironic for a country who don't really like Motorsport or Football to be given a round!

Smolenk has a new-for-2011 event for FIA GT3, I assume SF is piggybacking on that. I've no idea what type of circuit it is let alone the design.

Middle East could be anywhere among our favourites. :)

Gavin is likely right with Hampton Downs.

No pro would ever use Garageband. It's a nice toy to play with, but for serious work, never in a million years would it be touched.

It could be Taupo, but the A1GP showed that it's too tight...

I like the variety in this schedule but I'm sure they said they were only going to countries which had a team in the series..

Pros can and do use Garageband for working out ideas or rough demos. It's easy to transfer to Logic to finish it off. I've been told several hit songs were made using Garageband, so don't write it off as a toy :)

Recently I was lucky enough to see a brilliant demo of how you can use an iPad in live performance using various iPad synth apps, the person in question is part of a chart topping band. I can easily see him using Garageband on the iPad

Love the video by the way.

One of the apps used was the Korg iMS-20 (£9.49) which is a complete emulation of the original which I am sure cost a lot more when it was new.
