Hello everyone. Today I have a few bits of news, some podcast links, and a few bits of music to check out.
F1 News
Testing continued in Barcelona. I'm fed up with testing though, perhaps it is because Bahrain was supposed to be this weekend and I've spent months building up to this week as the start of the season, but I just can't wait any longer. I just want the season to start now! Christine and Leigh have wrap-ups.
Speaking of Leigh's site, do check elsewhere there for testing results from Formula 3 and GP3. I liked this post in particular. He'll be covering British F3 from the circuits themselves this year.
Pedro de la Rosa has rejoined McLaren as 3rd driver after leaving Pirelli, shunting Gary Paffett back down to simulation work. I wonder if Pedro will be getting a Christmas card from Gary this year.
But the biggest news of the day? An Aside With Joe makes a return! It is a great show too, and what's more, there's a 2nd part to come. If after that you need more journo chat and you missed it last week, do check out the conversation with Naoise from Manipe F1.
Other Racing
News in brief from elsewhere:
European teams have arrived in America in readiness for the 12 Hours of Sebring next weekend. If you're curious about how racecars outside F1 are freighted around the world, take a look: Oreca; Rebellion; unloading.
Mike Conway made his return to the IndyCar cockpit with his new team Andretti Autosport in a test on the short course at Sebring. Read his thoughts here. Word is he was fastest today unofficially. Sebastian Bourdais was there too.
Meanwhile the IndyCar teams are trying to convince Firestone not to quit. I hope they succeed or another quality supplier like Michelin comes in instead.
Racecar Engineering have a nice piece about Chip Ganassi Racing's wind tunnel, which is housed in an actual abandoned tunnel! Completely separately, if like me you like the Retronaut site, when you've watched the YouTube video do link through to the clips of the abandoned Turnpike, and the 1953 video of the drive along the road. At least as fascinating as the wind tunnel, but in a very different way.
The final bit of IndyCar news is that they are looking to bring in NASCAR's "lucky dog" free pass to give a lap back to the first car a lap down in each caution period. Not one single fan on Twitter tonight is favour of this move, myself included. Nobody should be given a lap back for free. In positive news the restart line at Indy will be moved to 300yds from the flag stand rather than being way off at turn 3, which should help keep the field bunched and racy on restarts.
This Week's Racing
Slim pickings this weekend, obviously this was the week we originally expected the Bahrain GP to take place. The only thing happening is the continuation of the F1 test, and NASCAR Trucks are at Darlington on Saturday night (I'm sure Nelson Piquet Jr will be there). The other two NASCAR series aren't running. A great week to take a break and do something else!
Things really pick up next weekend when we have the 12 Hours of Sebring, NASCAR at Bristol (including DP's debut at the track in the Nationwide event), MotoGP at Qatar, and GP2 at Imola. The week after that? F1 and IndyCar.
Music
I love this video. The song may not be the most uplifting ever but it is a good one and I really like it. The real reason for posting it is the video which I've liked for a long time. You might want to listen to the earlier version linked below, before this one.
Two weeks ago following my last Daily, Mr C and I had a discussion about the production of music. The interesting thing is this version above is not the first version I heard of this song. It comes from his 2009 album 'Bears', but for two years beforehand I (and a small group of us) had been listening to the original release - and the original version of the video - from his 2007 EP 'Sticker, Star and Tape'. The new version came as something as a shock and I didn't like it for ages, it was good but it just wasn't the same, but what's weird is that I've just listened to both back-to-back after not hearing either for a few months and I now prefer the 2009 version. How odd!
If you like this do also check out Carbon Dating. I can't find the 2009 version but for this song it goes the other way, I prefer the 2007 version here. (the YouTube uploader has confusingly stuck the 2009 album cover on to that video).
You can buy both the 2009 album on iTunes or via his site for £6, and the 2007 EP (the red one) via his site for £4. DO IT.
Sadly, Sam has given up making music. I'd seen him live just the once, that was in a pub in Weymouth in December 2006. After seeing him there I thought he'd be big, then when 'Bears' came out I thought it would make him huge. It got him noticed by the BBC and the title track was used on an ep of 'Chuck', but it didn't seem to get the attention he deserved, so tired of fighting a losing battle he just stopped. A loss to music, I sometimes wonder what he's doing now..
Lukeh found this great sketch about Radiohead (might be geolocked?) and see his post about his heroes too.
That's all from me, I'll leave you with this great quote posted on Giggles' blog. Have a great day!
Hi Thursday, sorry I'm late, I got distracted with lots and lots of browser tabs.. :)
Diego is getting married! http://www.ovaciondigital.com.uy/110309/actualidad-552354/actualidad/forlan-y-zaira-nara-anunciaron-su-casamiento/
:-)
Morning.
Here's a great article about the use of carbon fibre in road cars and it's birth in F1: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12691062
Was the MP4/1 the first F1 car to be made of carbon fibre? I thought that Lotus had tried it before too?
and 30 years on the carbon fibre made it to such high tech products as keychains, mousepads ... :-)
There was an article in Mortorsport Magazine I saw yesterday about carbon brakes that said it (the MP4) was
Steven corrected me once on this and said something about Lotus. STEVEN!!!!
(form live autosport)
hm, I wonder if reading this forecast McLaren people still think that skipping today and staying on for Saturday instead is better use of their resources ...
Could this story get any more Australian? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12696091
A miner was fishing in a creek, gets attacked by a crocodile who bites off his finger, calls over to his mate at the pub who beats off the croc with a stick!
Carlos Slim is 38% richer this year: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12691377
He earned 20 billion dollars!
I think it is more about the stock markets going up last year after the crisis, and so paper wealth is up ...
It's a great site indeed. After they posted an article about Hitlers' Grand Prix cars, I suggested to them that they check out Grand Prix Saboteurs - which the guy behind the site thanked me for...
PING Amy or Mr. C;
Do the Sidepodcast comments update automatically on the kindle? Because the Autosport guys are discussing their live service on the device and they don't think thiers does...
Morning everyone,
Hope you are all well.
Morning. Thanks, I am - hope you are too.
It's snowing today and I cycled to work!
Yikes!
Aye, all is decent here. Just busying away.
Let's hope it stops - it's been very cold lately but my clothing seems to protect me quite well. I'm wearing Ski Pants, a tee shirt, a thin jersey and a windbreaker.
Only problem is that I have a great tailwind travelling to work, which means I have a wicked headwind on the way home...
it is not snowing here and I did not cycle to work ! :-)
I do wish (Team) Lotus well but judging from what they have shown so far in testing I think they are a bit too optimistic ...
If Lotus don't run in the midfield this year and score points then they can call the year a failure.
I do see them at the tail of the midfield and scoring the odd point, but not necessarily being competitive with Sauber / Williams, etc...
Morning all. Just noticed HRT have a new big sponsor - Panda Security. they must be trying to win Christine over :)
They must have bought the "You're sponsor here" spot
well, they considered their 2010 season success... but at the beginning they expected to be fighting with the back of the midfield towards the end of the season. never happened
not sure if that sponsor brings any cash though ...
http://www.hispaniaf1team.com/en/home/227-panda-security-sponsors-hispania-f1-racing-team-for-2011
Sounds like a technical partnership to me.
Morning
morning pat,
nice daily
Hey Pat, great selection of links today :)

:)
Agree. With RBR back end and nice tidy car they should jump forward.
Doesn't necessarily apply to Virgin though, with their lack of resources. They ought to be closer to the pack than before at the very least but their testing looks shockingly slow to me.
They were a sponsor last year too.
they should jump forward and they probably will. but can they jump ahead 3 secs more than Force India or Sauber ?
P.S. that gearbox is giving them some headaches this week in Barcelona
I say that but I can't find a picture..
Agreed. I'm not sure what the aims of Virgin are TBH...
can see it here (2010 Abu Dhabi) - http://www.hispaniaf1team.com/images/phocagallery/RD19_AbuDhabi/thumbs/phoca_thumb_l_d10abu787.jpg
I thought the 3+sec was to the leaders. They were maybe 2s behind the midpack. They ought to be able to cross most of that gap. I'm not really expecting them to beat hte others on pace.
There's another BBC F1 season preview online: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsport/formula_one/9419163.stm
Will have to watch it later...
it's a tough ask if Toro Rosso is as quick as it looks. I think Sauber look all right which could just leave Force India at the back of the midpack - will running with them be enough to score points?
Ooh yay
Aren't Force India going backwards and Sauber going forwards due to the transfer of key personnel (for example, James Key)?
possibly the reason
Interesting point by Brundle - if we get 3/4 stops a race we could see 75-100 pitstops a race
Oh that would leave me with a lot of work to do!
I really really hope the tyres make the racing better - and the limited running leaves more allowance for mistakes in car setups etc.
thanks
Why the heck did they get EJ to talk about KERS? Are they taking the **** or what?
OK, 2 secs to the end of the midfield, still a lot considering that Force India and Saueber and Toro Rosso all also improve ...
well this season may not be only about the raw speed ... the tyres and strategies can mix it a bit. I think as long as a team has a car that has enough pace and reliability to stay on the same lap as point scoring cars, the points are possible
All he talked about was Pirelli really

oh dear...
This is the worst day ever!
Morning all.
*shakes fist at Thursday*
Morning!
Morning
Great daily, Pat. I see Mr C will be spending more money on music today. He can't resist a DO IT call to action :)
Heheh! Thanks.
I was thinking I might embed the other song when I get a minute.
2 might be too many though
Two is okay, I think. Any more and you're looking at an album in a daily :)
Ohh I regret buying Tiny Wings now. I am going to be playing this all day.
Goodbye Angry Birds, hello new game.
Sidepodalbum of songs people include in Dailies.
"You can't buy this album in the shops!" Ahh the mid-90s Eurosport/MTV ads...
Vitaly is awesome:
Q. There has been no real testing with the wet tyres. Is that a concern?
VP: No, we did some laps.
Q. But nothing close to a race distance.
VP: Last year we had a lot of wet tyre testing! I don't think this is a problem. Well, it's a problem, but not a problem. (laughs)
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/89841
Aww, he's just lovely. Winning me over sooooooo much.
Q. How do you see your relationship with Nick Heidfeld?
VP: He's sick. I don't understand what he is doing here, he should be back at the hotel. But at the moment it is OK.
Emma was right..
Indeed!
it doesn't do javascript, so i assume it can't.
aye, definitely not. It only loads the mobile doohickey and even then it looks very very very very very simple.
done
I was just having this conversation with Mr C yesterday. Joe mentioned Vitaly at one point and I was awwwing.
When did that happen??
Ping: http://mrschristine.com/2011/03/10/baby-panda-thursday-81/
I have no idea. As Pat says when we went to Spa Emma was very much trying to win people over in how lovely and awesome Vitaly is and I think we never really saw it.
Now we do, he's just awesome. So much nicer than Grosjean or Piquet or whoever else Renault have had in recent years as a no 2.
I know I felt sorry for him at Silverstone. Maybe that was the beginning. Ooh look: http://sidepodcast.com/post/when-will-be-vitalys-time-to-shine
So it was :)
Lovely Rubens in a lovely car
http://yfrog.com/h0ko7qkj
Pleased he's gone back to the normal helmet too (I give it 4 races before we get an alternate version :P)
Mmm, flapjack for breakfast.
hmmm... i have no idea what that is
I am considering a trek to a fine establishment nearby for savoury based nourishment.
Although flapjacks are really yummy. Have you never had one Leigh?
Never even heard of them tbh
mmmm, food in general. All I had today was an apple and a few grapes as my appetite was gone but now that I'm in bed it's back with a vengeance. I am already looking forward to breakfast :)
They're like oatmeal cubey biscuity things. Very yummy. Even better when they're chocolate flapjacks.
Oats and raisins and stuff. Google will help.
Cubey biscuits. Brilliant. I may have to add that to the dictionary.
I am shocked. I thought flapjacks were just thick pancakes.
It is in the US.
I think that's the American definition, we have our own far awesome version.
In fact Amy you should return for a few weeks to europe just to have some. Yes, definitely.
Wikipedia has educated me, I know exactly what you mean. I like those! I just had no idea it had another name :D
http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/Images/ExternalImages/ProductsDetailed/80/048880.jpg?ts=633851753184
He drove well at Spa too - shame he fluffed it on Saturday!
Bugger. I was hoping you could get one up over Autosport!
not forgetting vitaly's excellent drives at hungary and abu dhabi too
we do that everyday, by not claiming renault are the real team lotus...
:D
That too.
Boooooo Rubens has stopped out on track in catalunya :(
@WilliamsF1Team Just a minor problem caused us to stop out on track which is now fixed - not a KERS problem, as not running this today.
Is the fact that it isn't KERS because KERS is not working at all supposed to be reassuring?
Oh yeah, @beaks_the_twitt was saying earlier on twitter that HRT have arrived, they are playing loud German thrash metal and he hadn't seen the new car but he thinks it's there...
No.
They apparently had quite a fundamental failure with it yesterday though. Maybe it has yet to be sorted?
Maybe they'll just drop it?
I think we might see some teams elect not to use it for a race or two
Some of them don't even have the car built to install it, I think Lotus don't plan to use it at all
Autosport live are asking you to put your questions to Eric Boullier!
Are you DCI Jim Keats from Ashes to Ashes?
Someone has to ask the pineapple question ;)
Hmmm... Lotus aren't looking the most reliable. Following in Colin Chapman's footsteps?
Exactly, it's obvious who the real Team Lotus is
This idea of a hotlaps championship in F1 2010 is a genius idea from Virgin: http://www.marussiavirginracing.com/magazine/294/join-our-championship
Aye, so if Heidfeld and Vitaly finish loads of races, they are imposters
And BTW Tabatha confirmed to me that PC players are included :)
booooo at the name thing
Was reading that earlier, it does sound fantastic. Hopefully it won't be overshadowed by manufactured times and cheating especially with how easy it is to mod the PC version.
"(you can either drive as Timo, or add your own name - or even Jérôme's)"
Love how they think Ambrosia is the worst of the three options
Realism setting in?
GT5 Academy for PS3 was pretty easy to cheat too. We'll see.
Not snappy is it?
Lucas is so delicious.
I have seen plenty of PC Mods (I installed a few) but they are mostly visual tweaks & FOV tweaks though.
Ah I thought you meant the championship name ;)
On the topic of the F1 game I'm not sure if I mentioned this but Codies will be revealing it for the first time on the same weekend as Melbourne. I really hope they put 2 player split screen in it, and perhaps less bugs please ;)
Yeah of course, there's some fabulous visual tweaks and whatnot, but you always get that few that spoil it for everyone else that take advantage of a loophole in the game and use it to their advantage. As the game is moddable on PC it's a lot easier to get into than the console ones.
How can they reveal the 2011 game already? Surely it's not even in Alpha stage yet?
They will have to make big improvements I reckon - they lost a lot of fans with the way they released and handled the game.
On the subject of Lucas, there sadly appears to be no updates on his site yet. In fact, his site is still decked out in Virgin stuff.
Yeah, I'll be honest the multiplayer experience I have had with that game has been poor.
I think it'll just be concept art and what features the game will include, nothing more than that. I'm convinced they'll put a lot more effort into the testing after the problems it came with.
Sadly that is a common case in modern day games though - in the Playstation1 era with no internet a game was tested indepth so it didn't ship with bugs. Now with the broadband era we're in and ease of downloading patches you find the vast majority of console based games will end up being patched. Which can be pretty annoying.
I only play it online with friends. It's the same with GT5, Forza, etc, as every time I play a public online racing game it ends up being a crash fest.
I was thinking about this the other day.
In the 80's and 90's, most games were made as a labour of love and only released when they are finished. Nowadays games have to be released on time, so they end up half finished and so buggy they're unplayable. Then they finish the other half off and sell it to you as DLC!
That's where iRacing is brilliant - the only problem then is that you end up last because everyone else practices for 1000 hours and is 5 seconds a lap faster!
Don;t get me wrong games have always come with the odd bug here and there but it's much more evident in modern games as they can just patch them up willy nilly. DLC is a whole other argument though that I'm tempted to blog about now I've got myself talking about it :)
It will be the same game engine as this year i expect, they probably wont tweak the graphics too much either beyond obvious livery /track updates etc.
I would expect the main changes will be new features and AI improvements
In the 80s and 90s it was so much cheaper though, there is probably as much code in 1 GT5 car as there was in the whole of a game in that era
As long as they included new stuff and tweaked the problems and whatnot that plauged 2010 that wouldn't be a problem to me. I thought visually the game looked stunning and the engine was pretty solid too. Perhaps take out that odd yellow filter though as people have done with the PC mods :)
True but even in GT5's case it was in development for 5 years and it still came out with problems and missing features. If you don't have an internet connection for your PS3 you've missed out on 5 or 6 major updates and gameplay additions since the release. It's a bit unfair expecting everyone to have access.
i'd love to do iRacing, but i am put off because i'm simply not serious enough about sims to use to the depth that some do
True but game studios were a lot smaller too.
It's too serious for me, once you get past the rookie levels. I'm decent at driving games but I haven't got a chance against that lot.
Go for it. I'd comment for sure!
If it is, then we are in trouble. The patch did not fix the game as well as expected (the bloody pitstop bug is still there!) so I expect there to be a lot of bugs still.
That's because it wasn't finished - it almost became like Duke Nukem Forever.
I refuse to believe that game is coming out this year :)
It's kinda like the Chinese Democracy album.
Is it me or are Virgin going to have another awful year for reliability?
its not as bad though, so they know what causes it. Fixing it shouldn't be too much of a problem.
the new features for gameplay will be the adjustable rear wing (which I bet there will be an AI bug ;)), the safety car maybe along with general tweeks.
Split screen does need to be included, I'd take a game with bugs so long as that is there. heh.
They don't have the budget. They reckon they spent most of last year fixing problems rather than development.
Let's hope so.
Absolutely an AI bug - that will be hard to implement.
Be careful what you wish for ;)
Steve Hood spoke over the winter how the team wanted to make more of the live a life mode which is interesting. I'm not gonna fault them for what they did with that as it was a new idea and their first crack at doing something like that but there's so so so much more they could do in that aspect and they know full well of that.
christine has temporarily infiltrated my workplace. i think this means she has the 2nd best job in the world.
I don't think they bothered at all with live the life, unless picking the answer on the right is all an f1 driver does outside the car ;)
Agreed. I've only started to enjoy that part of the game now I'm driving a Red Bull with fuel and tyre sim on, resulting in closer racing as I don't think the Red Bull is the fastest in my current season. Although on tracks where I have a good setup I can still beat the AI fairly easily on the hardest difficulty.
hehe. if you do that all the time though, the other teams dislike you. So you'll be stuck where you are for quite a while ;)
Because you stick up for your own team so much, do you mean?
yep. say too many nice things about the team you drive for and the others dislike you.
Interesting, because you can only see if you are doing well with your own team...
Did she bring you more flapjack?
You can see what the other teams think of you on the contracts list, there's a little wheel representing their feelings for you.
Lucky you!
Well, teams who have taken an interest to you anyways.
until you reach the level the team will take you on, then you can see in the same way you see your current team.
OK, thanks for the tip ;)
Andrew Benson is in fine form as usual. He was asked how he could be so sure Mark Hughes' analysis of the testing times could be correct, and his answer (just after 13.22) is a classic: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsport/formula_one/9420677.stm
"He's on the payroll so he's right because we say so!"
ohh benson. Perfect! Deary me.
In Manipe's chat, I totally agree with what he says about testing times. I spent a week analysing them last year and couldn't come up with any conclusions from the data. In the end I fudged it and went with my gut feelings, which thankfully were ok: http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2010/03/03/barcelona-testing-summary-2010/

Afternoon everyone :)
hullo mr giggles
Woah. Does this mean she knows what you do now? That's weird! ;)
Really good article. I have commented but it's a long one!
And now I have the music from Outrun in my head. Thanks Lukeh ;)
Loving the comment though :)
I just had a very Mr C style situation. We've been having server issues at work so I've been having to get up early but this morning I had to get up early and then go to work afterwards and so because I didn't want to wake Katherine I ended up getting dressed exclusively from clothes that had dried overnight on the drying rack. Which meant that I was dressed down on a Thursday. The power of the being dressed down has been attempting to convince me, all day that it is a Friday... (and now we get to the MrCesque bit) until I saw Pat's post and then I remembered that no it's actually a Thursday!
Hullo mr h
another person's day saved thanks to the sidepodcast daily! :)
Well... I don't really know what he is doing, although I have peeked over his shoulder. And I still don't really know where it is, because I wasn't paying attention on the way in!!

I have written a blog post... It's called Close the Curtains... Don't be scared...
http://gamboling.co.uk/2011/03/10/close-the-curtains/
Oh dear, that sounds all a bit technical. Doesn't Mark Hughes know that you're supposed to just make a guess and if it happens to be right, make a big fanfair about how you predicted it?
Barrichello's car has stopped.
....again
Not a good day for Williams or Virgin. Force India looks a bit slow but given the very long runs Sutil's been doing that's hardly surprising...
We're not doing very well on this session-running business. Sergio Perez caused a red flag (according to Autosport's Twitter) before Autosport's live feed had chance to say the track was open again!
Green flag again, as Perez appears to have got his car moving again.
OMG, I had a gale force head wind on the way home! I so earned my hot milo after that cycle ride! http://runkeeper.com/user/RubberGoat/activity/28086198
Afternoon/Evening all
Bonjour
Hullo mr Bassano
I want to buy a CD for a friend [don't go there, very un#MFC] but it needed to be convenient. i.e. on the way home
I'll pop into Sainsbury's, they sell CDs, I told myself
Alas, if it's in the Top 100 you're fine but if it came out this week - no dice
Surely that's a big week for new releases?
Now, I actually have to think about how I can achieve this strange practice of physical media acquirement before Sunday
#WesternWorldProblems
Also, I'm only now reading the 'official news' on today's Heathrow incident.
It was full scale alert for a while as far as the grapevine says
*heads over to news websites to see*
I haven't seen it mentioned on twitter or anything, how odd
I heard it was trending. Turned out to be 'a suspect package'
My Late Shift colleague spotted a military helicopter heading to Terminal 5 on his way into work so I think it was a serious threat for a little while
I have just spent some time to add a comment for Another F1 Podcast's Guatemalan's iTunes review page.
I said it was my favourite non-Guatemalan F1 podcast other than Sidepodcast
:)
Their last podcast was very quiet, I can't listen to it in the car at all
Do you need a Guatemalen iTunes account?
I wonder if there's a Bhutan page
Yes you do... And it's a pain to set up...
I've been through that process before
Maybe one person per week should do one :)
So, Alex. Have you definitely decided you're going for iPad 2 and if so, which one?
I should do the Danish one, in Danish!
I think so. But I really don't know which one. I'm thinking of waiting to decide until they are out in the states.
How did you do that without a non-Guatemalan credit card?
You should!
Apparently Bibendium will be driving at Sebring next weekend: http://americanlemans.com/primary1.php?cat=news|15551
That's tomorrow. I need to decide too before Boston, not sure if I will yet
Wish I'd never read Gruber's post about v3 in Sep
YES!!
Make sure you include the word Sidepodcast :)
Some accounts don't require a cc number.
The US never used to. Designed so you could top up with vouchers and gift cards or free stuff only. Need to research an address though
There was F1 Panda News today!
Was this already reported?
Here's the trick.
1) Sign out
2) Scroll down to the bottom of the iTunes store and press the flag
3) Choose the country you want
4) Attempt to download one of the free apps in the store
5) It will say you need an account
6) Sign up with a fake e-mail but one you can access you will need to click on the verify link on the relevant iTunes computer
7) Sign in
8) post the review
Sorry and at the credit card stage choose none. Because it's a free app they will let you choose none
Well, i think we should find someone to do one each day until it's mentioned on the podcast.
Every review must mention SPC
omg!!
hehehehehehe :) :)
Gavin, can you do a Danish one tomorrow. I'll do one on Saturday
May go Vietnamese as I'm not sure if there's an iTunes Store for Bhutan
I'm doing it now. I can't do it tomorrow...
Sounds good
I'll set up my account now
Hello all, how are we today?
I've been to Specsavers and got new glasses. I'm also trialling contact lenses. They're fine but I have a mildly anxious feeling because I haven't got my glasses on.
Are you freaking out because you don't know where you put your glasses?
Hey Janna
I imagine putting your fingers in your eye takes some getting used to as well
Hehehe I love putting in contact lenses. Is that weird?? :P
Yes. It is
You had to ask?
No, I can see them but it just feels odd.
Amy will be pleased to know that there is an Finnish ITMS
It will. The lady in the shop said I did it very quickly but I expect she says that to everyone
:( Well I do. Pity I can't wear them any more. Fixing my vision gives me migraines :P
Doesn't sound very 'fixed' :D
Bassano, I need some help. My friend is considering Prague for her birthday trip. Was the hotel you stayed at any good? If so, do you have a link.
Thanks
Not here as I'm supposed to be cleaning the flat and then I want to do some blog writing, but Max Papis has lost his cats http://plixi.com/p/82970382
Awww. I can't wear them all the time because I take my glasses off to read but it could be fun to go out without glasses once in a while
He called one Stinky and he expects it to stick around?
I use one eye for distance and the other eye for looking at things closeby. My nearby vision eye in particular can't focus on anything further away than about the length of my arm.
So erm as long as I don't get poked in the eye, my vision is great. I tried wearing contacts for several months to try and make my eyes behave normally but it's been so long they've been doing that, my brain can't hack it at all.
how does one lose three cats?
I don't have a lot of faith in an app called "Learn Speak English"
i have no idea
:)
I've never understood that. Someone can't see well or judge distance so you ask them to poke their eye until something surely hard to see is attached to it...
You don't need to look to put them in. You try and focus vaguely into the distance and then trust your fingers to know where your eye is.
blimey. the flying lap are spending a lot of money of facebook advertising. on every page for the past 10 minutes. mega budget.

It seems, like most places in Vietnam, they accept US $ too
Do they have sponsorship?
Done. Said that I like the podcast, I found them through Sidepodcast and mentioned the Lotus thing. Shall we tweet them when we post a review?
no idea. they must have a load of money though.

I have found the show to be an adequate replacement for Midweek Motorsport.
Anyone know if you can set up an autoreply at hotmail?
Have decided I should stop checking it on a quarterly basis
Don't know about autoreply but there is a forwarding option under "Options". You could get it to autoforward
noooo. that makes it way to easy. where's the challenge?
Agreed. Just leave it and wait to see what happens
I told them it was in a foreign store in a language they don't understand. Nothing else.
And Google translate doesn't do the job properly either. Ha!
Found it. There's a 'vacation reply'
No need to switch it off
Shall I delete the tweet then?
:)
It's worth repeating Lukeh's night time link to the BBC Comedy Short:
Radiohead Fan Speaks Out
So true :D
That was good!
People will hopefully find it too if they read Pat's daily ;)
spot on!
Ah. Busted
It's on my list though, I've even queued up the song to play [I just forgot]
#Blushes
Still worth sharing though, it is pretty brilliant :)
Although I posted it on a Muse forum and the thread turned into a flame war about which Muse albums are better than Radiohead ones, which i didn't think would happen in such a context yet somehow it still did amazingly. Lesson learnt there too.

Is pingle not cool any more?
Pingle is for when I am in a super good mood and/or the post is exciting.
Today I am quite sleepy so just a regular ol' ping.
awww, work tired you out?
Email question:
It's just occurred to me that sending an email with attachments to a business, is more likely to be caught in a spam net
I sent attachments of my damaged pic to The Cahier Archive and am waiting for a response. I'll give it a few days and then maybe send again without attachments
I forgot how to do it!
A 'once you post, you just can't stop' sort of feeling? :D
I like the idea of pingle being special. I had never considerer graded pings
Is it like DefCon levels?
He's on Facebook too BTW.
aside ping, was uppercase.
I'll try to resolve in private first. Twitter will be my next option.

Apple seems to think that a 3.5mm audio jack is just too damn bulky. Apparently they are researching hinged, flexible and exposed port housings

I've stopped all requests on FB now
I don't wish to encourage further use of it :D
Ah you're one of those. I have had two friends tell me they have deleted their accounts lately ;)
I check it now and then to see how my nieces are. Not much else
I've been tempted to delete mine too recently. It is just doing my head in but on the other side of the argument it's a pretty essential communication tool to have.
DefPing 3 - kind of mustardy yellow
have you seen headphone sticking out the iphone? huge!
Although to me there's a big difference to have it as a tool and to completely depend on it though and sadly too many people absolutely depend on it.
I like all the links you guys put up (some end in the daily).
Also it's great to keep in touch with my friends in NZ and it's better to share photos on than Flickr (as more people tend to see it).
I have never had a facebook account. Not essential
Most of my friends send FB messages rather than emails now - but then we all seem to have smartphones too...
I think they are trying to reduce device depth, the headphone manufacturers can work on the size of the connector past the jack
If find FB is good for communicating with older people, like my Mum, who don't have smartphones and wouldn't use Twitter.
What happened to emails & texts?
If I'm not on facebook then my sister and her husband (who knows and has worked with several Nascar drivers) won't see me making fun of Nascar.
So I have to stay on FB :)

I've been thinking about it and I find I use different communications for different groups. I call my Mum and put info on FB I want her & friends who aren't local to know. My local friends I text. My sister I text, tweet, e-mail, FB (whatever). Sidepodpeeps I either comment or twitter.
The lines are blurred but that's basically how I use the various methods.

There is some great space stuff happening just now but have never been discussed here because no people are involved in going anywhere.
The two Voyager spacecraft have been in space for around 30 years now and
are near the heliosheath. In effect they are still feeling the sun's influence. After all that time they have not reached inter-stellar space. They are collecting some good information on what happens out there and despite being 1960s and 70s technology they are still working and responding to commands

The MESSENGER (their CAPS) has been whizzing around the inner solar system since 2004 and is just about to insert itself in an orbit around Mercury. I can't wait to see what comes back from this mission
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/messenger/media/MESSENGERPoisedInsertion.html
The MRO - Mars reconnaissance orbiter is approaching its 5th anniversary of its arrival in Mars orbit. It has sent back all sorts of fascinating data. We have learned a lot about Mars from it and it has sent 70000 photos
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/MRO/news/mro20110309b.html
NASA has all sorts of other missions that are equally fascinating but because there are no people whizzing around in them no-one talks about them.
My favourite is the Cassin-Huygens mission which has been zipping round Saturn and its moons for the last few years. It has generated thousands of incredible photos and revealed new things like icy volcanoes on at least one of the moons. Imagine very cold Slush Puppy volcanoes.

I like pingaroo
the idea of music by numbers bores me silly, but actually the noises coming from that corner of the room are quite tuneful.

No probs. I'm going to look into who picks what over the coming weeks but it will be a big task. I am going to look into who picked which driver, in what week and which series were most popular. I'll send you the file when I am done.

Hmmmm... doesn't feel like 20 past 10...
I've been playing with it for however long, half an hour or whatever. it's quite addictive, but... for the piano all it's done is make me desperately want a full size piano.
For the guitar, which I can barely scrape a tune on, it's magical. For the piano which I am a bit better at, it makes me crave the real thing.
Interesting times in iPad-land.

Good stuff and it'll be interesting to see how it turns out. Don't spend ages on it though, just a game. :)
:D
And after that it'll be the walk on piano from Big
True, but I think it might be interesting to see who gets picked the most ...
oh. I was going to wait and make it a treat for my iPad 2.
But I want it NOW
Silly Eddie decided to come to town that weekend so I'm paying him a visit on Thursday and Friday. He won't be on stage until quite late though so it should be OK.
I'll do a little stalking but I don't mind if I can't stay til closing, I've got plenty of chances to see drivers this year :)
Do it do it.
:-)
I may have suggest to my brother that Vedder might have been at the GP.
OOPS.
that would have made so much more sense.
I didn't think it would work but Tuna & Pasta in a chilli'd up smoky bacon sauce... yum!
It made sense to me at the time.
Birds of Tokyo? hmmm, not so impressed.
Yeah it will. We can tell that per event from Sebastian's stats, will be good to see the trend week to week, see if people have favourites / go-to picks.
Came home to my Mrs wearing this....I see where I rank...thanks @justinwilson22 http://yfrog.com/gy6j7lvj

The Living End? It's not 1998 anymore.
That's what I want to find out too.
I need to ask you a favour - when you list the picks for each player in the scoresheet, can you add a column for what series their picked driver is from?
........Eddie Vedder? ahem :-)

(and Autosport got two stories out of one interview)
Yeah I do that but I haven't bothered because there's only been one per week, seemed a waste of time
there's a talent to that :)
hehe I just feel that the Aus GP Corp set their bar too high with Kiss and The Who in the first couple of years of concerts. I doubt they'll ever match that again and that makes me angry every year.
It is right now. It will be very useful when the season kicks off proper ;)
Pat, awesome what you did there. You forced me to listen to listen to the artist while reading about it.
I'm here but not here at the same time.
Always liked that chap.
I did it all last year, can't split the Weekly Total table into series without it.
Cool.
Me too. Grrrrrr
:D
Not sure it was forced, you didn't have to click it, glad you did though. :)
I should say they are normally denoted by a letter after the driver name, rather than a column

http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/10032011/58/premier-league-ref-forced-brandish-invisible-yellow-card.html
OK, would be easier if you used a column (So I can easily make a pivot table out of it) but then it's no bother to me - it would just take a bit longer, that's all.
I'll see what I can do if I remember next time I look

#IndyCar
I think Randy Bernard may well missed the target on this one.

Is Sebring going to be on UK tv?
Yep - the Lucky Dog is an awful, awful rule though. I've never understood how it is meant to make racing better or exciting
I haven't seen any TV coverage mentioned yet but it will be online
Ok.
Streaming?
Me too and I'll only see part of it live, if anything.
Last year was less than 30 cars, this year the entry list is 57, a record I think.
LMP1 and GTE-Pro should be mega-exciting.
Yes
Wow
Not sure yet. Looks like MotorsTV might be down for ALMS (a week behind again) but the ILMC may go to Eurosport. Rumour from the RLM forum is that ILMC takes precedence so expect Eurosport, but might only be start/finish and a few updates.
americanlemans.com ought to have web streaming available to all. If that fails, RLM for radio-only, old-school like how I followed it in 2003 or so..
Christine may not want to FBFB this one. :)
i think she's going to try.

That seems like a bit of an oversight.
When will her album be ready?
err...
Oh wow!
Hey folks,
Back just for a second - is it me or did Superleague Formula cancel two rounds and not announce it??
it's worth buying, but it's not useful for any serious work yet. two years of updates and it'll be much better, but for £2.99 you can't really fault it.
#sidepodspace
This space stuff just never stops this week.
The crawler that transports the shuttle stack to the launch pad has just arrived under the shuttle. Once they get the shuttle properly mounted on it they will take it the 6 miles to the pad. It is on NASA TV but it's dark and nothing is happening so best give it a miss.
No idea. I have not seen anything about SLF this year so far
The have a press release stating the season now starts at the end of May in Estoril with a couple of new races.
There are four TBC rounds, but the races in Monza, Portimao and later the Nurburgring have disappeared, but I can't any announcement.
It's like they sent a press release to announce new races, but neglected to say they've dropped (or been dropped) by three venues.
Last I heard they had two TBAs in October time
Superleague Formula 2011
The original calendar (me, Dec 2010) - http://theformulaoneandmotorsportsarchive.wordpress.com/2010/12/23/2011-gp2-main-series-and-superleague-formula-schedules-announced/
New and **improved - http://www.superleagueformula.com/news/news/2011/superleague-formula-2011-more-global-than-ever
**Not necessarily improved
Surely it isn't intended for serious work.
Sounds like A1GP before it went pop
How peculiar.
Out: Monza, Portimao, Nurburgring, Ordos.
In: Estoril, Smolensk, Curitiba, Brazi, Middle East, New Zealand
A calendar in flux..
By the looks of the video, there's a dude plugging in a guitar into the iPad and then recording a song...
New Zealand?
That has to be Hampton Downs...
Oh I hope not. Apparently the SFO are investigating Tony Teixera (the series boss of A1GP) for millions of pounds of fraud...
I didn't realise Smolensk had a track of any certification. "Middle East" and "New Zealand" are quite vague
Only $400 million - not much you understand
hard to say. i assume it isn't, given it's missing some major features and it costs so little. logic pro costs £417.00, garageband on the ipad £2.99.
you'll get a handful of bands making viral videos just for publicity, but i can't see a pro users finding much to get excited about.
New Zealand's only interest is Chris Van Der Drift. Ironic for a country who don't really like Motorsport or Football to be given a round!
Smolenk has a new-for-2011 event for FIA GT3, I assume SF is piggybacking on that. I've no idea what type of circuit it is let alone the design.
Middle East could be anywhere among our favourites. :)
Gavin is likely right with Hampton Downs.
No pro would ever use Garageband. It's a nice toy to play with, but for serious work, never in a million years would it be touched.
Never heard of a track in Smolensk
Russian site
It could be Taupo, but the A1GP showed that it's too tight...
the ipad version fits in the same space.
http://www.silhouet.com/motorsport/tracks/central/smolenskring.gif
I like the variety in this schedule but I'm sure they said they were only going to countries which had a team in the series..
Ugh. Big kart track.
Anyhoo, this time I really must split
:)
reminds me of Aida
Looks a bit fiddly for something as fast as SLF
Adria? Mm. And Oschersleben.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWbxxFMZa3g
Pros can and do use Garageband for working out ideas or rough demos. It's easy to transfer to Logic to finish it off. I've been told several hit songs were made using Garageband, so don't write it off as a toy :)
Recently I was lucky enough to see a brilliant demo of how you can use an iPad in live performance using various iPad synth apps, the person in question is part of a chart topping band. I can easily see him using Garageband on the iPad
Love the video by the way.
One of the apps used was the Korg iMS-20 (£9.49) which is a complete emulation of the original which I am sure cost a lot more when it was new.
