Tuesday has arrived and before I do anything, I must point you towards yesterday's F1 Debrief. The show itself is marvellous, of course, but in the show notes there are some rather excellent outtakes - if such a thing exists. Actually, I might just post them again now anyway. Mr C and I could do with the embarrassment.

Now, on to other topics:

  • Adam Hay-Nicholls has an unusual post on his Metro F1 blog - spending some time with Tamara Ecclestone. She has some rather forthright views on Jenson Button, but if she's anything like her dad, I don't suppose she worries about what she says.
  • I mentioned yesterday that Mr C had spent some time watching NASCAR, and it looks as though that sport has just as much politics as F1. There was an incident involving Carl Edwards that he admits he caused on purpose, to try and knock his opponent out the way - revenge, if you will, for an early incident. Leigh has some thoughts on the concept of on track payback, and suffice it to say, it's not a good idea!
  • Today is the last day for the Joe Saward competition, where we are offering you the chance to win a signed copy of his book The Grand Prix Saboteurs. We've had tons of entries, but there's still time to get yours in, and you never know, luck might be on your side.
  • Finally, a quick plug to the TOTAL 2010 Grand Prix Travel Guide. It's clearly a marketing ploy, but has plenty of useful information in there including: "Where to stay in Korea? Where to get a drink in Bahrain?" The things you need to know.

That should do it for now. I hope your week is going smoothly, and as ever, I will see you in the comments.

Refurb is such a great idea - cheaper and stright from Apple. I think this is how I will buy an iMac.

    ...and a new ipod.

    ...maybe even an iphone?

Well I guess I have all evening to watch it ... and it's not like there's any rush to write a fuel-corrected post. After Qually I will just make a graph for each session's times and then a combined time - unless anyone has any better ideas?

"They say the best kind of speeches are short and to the point. Well the point is there is some sport on the telly, we've all got a beer, I think we can make an afternoon of this."

If I am right in thinking afternoon wedding, 10pm is a great time to watch qualy. Even if you have to fake get drunk and cause a scene so they have to "put you to bed". You might ruin the wedding, but sometimes sacrifices have to be made.

  • Alex Andronov09/03/2010 at 09:22

Oooh I could try but how would I do that without refuelling?

Well I'm not sure what I meant really... Maybe it won't vary that much... Maybe we'll end up just looking at the stripe and saying, "these are the early stoppers, these are the later stoppers". Hmmm doesn't leave you with much.

We will see - let me record the differences between the Q2 and Q3 times versus the lap of the first pitstop and see if there is a relation.

You would expect a short stopper to have a smaller gap though..

They're both low-fuel runs... ...but we can use them to find out who went all-out (and is therefore sacrificing race pace for track position at the start) and those who held back a bit (who'll qualify worse but still have a car under them at the end of the first stint).

Yeah it's worth looking into - it's very little extra effort so we will see if anything comes from it...

At my brother's wedding, some people were permitted not to show up for the reception at all (the most common reasoning used was that some people would find a wedding plus celebratory family meal enough on its own, but others included people looking after children or working) and even the others were only expected to be there for about an hour (long enough to see the first dance and eat some food). After that, the happy couple were fine with people slipping away, even if they danced half the night away alongside a number of their friends.

There was also at least one speech where the speaker took one look at the crib sheet and decided to severely curtail it because "it was too long and you know what it says already".

Apparently the Formula 1 2010 career mode will involve you having the ability to walk down the pitlane/paddock. Have seen a few sources say David Croft and Holly Samos may interview your driver in these career moments.

Does Lee McKenzie interview you after you retire and ask you if you are disappointed?

  • Lukeh09/03/2010 at 12:29

From what I've read the paddock stuff will let you choose whether to go to the scrum of interviewers so I'd imagine something like that would be in there. No idea if it'll be Lee, wil probably be Holly Samos I'd imagine.

  • Lukeh09/03/2010 at 12:35

One part of the article that made me laugh in a very guilty way is that if you have it on the complete sim mode, you can completely mess up your pit stops as in not brake soon enough and run down crew members. Obviously it'll cost you big time though. The physics engine is based off work with the teams as well, so steering and the weight of the car will be realistic. Plus you'll get weather conditions in where one part of the track could be steaming with rain and the other be dry, like what happens in Malaysia and whatnot.

They reeeeeeeeally are going for an ultra realistic game for the big consoles, as promised.

it totally won't top Formula 1 on the PS1 because I can't be Mika. I have been having so much fun with that at work.

One of the articles I've been reading is on an f1 website that's not so reputable around these parts though, but most of the info is from magazine scans too so their info (which is information from @AndyGray_ who is working on the game obviously) matches what I've seen.

    Hmm.

If you look at the cockpit of most civilian planes, they have "steering wheels" too. Maybe it's to reflect the idea that space flight would become commercial in the near future?

Will I have to go to the mother in laws or my parents, in addition as my daughter is only 4 my wife is expecting me to be pampering to her every desire. Just as well I have Sky+ as I have some grave concerns re seeing the race live without interuption. Is anyone else having similar concerns?

Yes - I'll be at my mum's. I had hoped to be at home for the race so I could follow it properly and analyse what was happening with tyre stints, then go over after... but now I'll be there watching with granddad, which is good in itself but I'll have to rewatch on Monday to get the detail.

A little bit of a grumble - the IRL Series just sent me a fan survey about the potential new chassis for 2012 onwards - which is great.

Fan participation is nice and all, but how could I possibly answer multiple choice questions about safety and speed, etc... and then the survey crashed Firefox when loading my answers.

My e-mail address isn't working at the moment Stuart sorry about that... I am hoping to have it fixed by the start of the season.

I am planning on getting the podcasting of the radio show working... especially now that I have solved the technical issues.

  • stuartrav09/03/2010 at 14:23

    Thanks for the reply.

If you still have my business card, when the podcast is up and running please can send me an email to let me know. By the way the email was really just to thank you for allowing me to tag along for the evening with Joe. As you may have read elsewhere I had a great evening.

On a related subject will you be attending the St Paddys do next week, as I see that Bassano won't be there and thus it looks as though there won't be many people I know going!

I guess it really depends if others are going. I have to go to Birmingham on the day and I don't yet know what time I'll be back in London.

Bassano, was there ever a wiki page for this?

I can't do a weekday... apart from the 23rd when my plane lands at Gatwick at 5pm!

because he will be so busy meeting every Australian does that mean I don't have to see him? I'm scared he will try and scientologise me.

I've finally finished the transcript I promised you last August: http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/episode74-doc

Same as with the first one, when I there was something I didn't understand I put ??? and the time. Also almost all the team names in the Fantasy racers section are probably all wrong.

And I don't know how to spell presumedly, persumedly, persumadly ... (Mr C stop saying that ;))

  • me09/03/2010 at 16:26

has there been any speculation re: stuart's mclaren pre-announcement earlier?

@teamSCboard: Mega new look at www.mclaren.com today. And they've got something special planned for Friday...

    some kind telemetry things maybe?

  • me09/03/2010 at 16:29

And I don't know how to spell presumedly, persumedly, persumadly ... (Mr C stop saying that ;))

    is that even a word?

hey, i coulda said "jumpbling" instead ;)

  • me09/03/2010 at 16:31

I've finally finished the transcript I promised you last August: http://drop.io...t/asset/episode74-doc

  • Christine09/03/2010 at 16:32

And I don't know how to spell presumedly, persumedly, persumadly ... (Mr C stop saying that ;))

    Presumedly is right :)

  • Kathi09/03/2010 at 16:32

    Presumedly is right :)

    Thanks :D

  • me09/03/2010 at 16:33

    Presumedly is right :)

but what the heck does it mean?

  • Jon Waldock09/03/2010 at 16:34

but what the heck does it mean?

    presumedly? to presume something?

  • Kathi09/03/2010 at 16:35

but what the heck does it mean?

Ask Mr.C, he uses it aaaall the time. ;)

  • Christine09/03/2010 at 16:35

but what the heck does it mean?

Presumedly? It's the adverb version of presume.

  • me09/03/2010 at 16:37

Presumedly? It's the adverb version of presume.

    so it's a real word.

    i must've meant presumably?

  • Jon Waldock09/03/2010 at 16:39

    so it's a real word.

    im not convinced it is...

    i must've meant presumably?

    i read edly as ably

    oops

  • Kathi09/03/2010 at 16:39

    i must've meant presumably?

Maybe I shouldn't transcribe in a foreign language. Both word seem the same to me :(

  • Christine09/03/2010 at 16:39

    i must've meant presumably?

Well presumably is an adjective but much more widely used.

  • Christine09/03/2010 at 16:39

    im not convinced it is...

    Presumedly is a word.

  • me09/03/2010 at 16:40

Well presumably is an adjective but much more widely used.

    oh cool.

    i'm smarter than i think.

  • Jon Waldock09/03/2010 at 16:40

    Presumedly is a word.

really? i stand corrected, ive never heard it, only presumably

  • Christine09/03/2010 at 16:40

Maybe I shouldn't transcribe in a foreign language. Both word seem the same to me :(

They essentially mean the same thing.

  • me09/03/2010 at 16:40

Maybe I shouldn't transcribe in a foreign language. Both word seem the same to me :(

Is there anyway on Wordpress editing online to insert a load of images into a post rather than one by one?

  • Bassano09/03/2010 at 17:19

Well presumably is an adjective but much more widely used.

    Is it not an Adverb?

  • Jon Waldock09/03/2010 at 17:19

Is there anyway on Wordpress editing online to insert a load of images into a post rather than one by one?

you can highlight more than one to upload?

  • Lukeh09/03/2010 at 17:20

you can highlight more than one to upload?

Have you never heard of the control or shift button? :P

  • Alex Andronov09/03/2010 at 17:20

    Is it not an Adverb?

    they both are (I think)

  • Lukeh09/03/2010 at 17:22

Ah! I've found the option. Excellent.

  • Jon Waldock09/03/2010 at 17:23

Is there anyway on Wordpress editing online to insert a load of images into a post rather than one by one?

you can highlight more than one to upload?

    ooh i read question again.

    into post i dont know.

    my bad.

  • Alex Andronov09/03/2010 at 17:26

    it's a timing thing innit?

I am going to get this wrong but I think it's like, "When Jenson won the World Championship he was presumably happy".

And the other one is like this: "When are you expecting them? Presumedly early."

The first is, "we don't know but we could guess". The second is, "we don't yet know, but we expect".

    I think ;)

  • Lukeh09/03/2010 at 17:26

    my bad.

No worries, what I found only inserts as a gallery. Do not want :(

    *does the long way*

    Ping!!!! http://wp.me/pHfaV-5v

  • Bassano09/03/2010 at 17:32

The first is, "we don't know but we could guess". The second is, "we don't yet know, but we expect".

Present and past tense, is my guess

  • Alex Andronov09/03/2010 at 17:33

    my bad.

No worries, what I found only inserts as a gallery. Do not want :(

    1) Can you not upload them all

    2) open post in 1 window + Media List in the other

    3) Drag from one to the other?

  • Jon Waldock09/03/2010 at 17:34

    Ping!!!! http://wp.me/pHfaV-5v

    Hi RG

  • Lukeh09/03/2010 at 17:43

    Especially "Mr C"

I know but I didn't want to go for the obvious ones all the time :)

  • Alex Andronov09/03/2010 at 17:46

I have tested this theory and it does work...

    1) Can you not upload them all

    2) open post in 1 window + Media List in the other

    3) Drag from one to the other?

sorry it was a bit late

  • Alison09/03/2010 at 18:41

    What are you thinking about

I want to do management with accounting I thinks.

Ideally I'd want to go to Glasgow but I can't afford to take the extra year.

  • Steven Roy09/03/2010 at 18:45

With what you have already done and the fact you have been managing people can'you short circuit things and get an MBA? They are very fashionable

With what you have already done and the fact you have been managing people can'you short circuit things and get an MBA? They are very fashionable

Yeah maybe. I'm thinking about it. That looks expensive though. There's nowhere near the same kind of loan support available.

hehehehe the interview went really well! The most exciting part though was meeting the 3rd year student who was showing us around. He's 20, and is a motorsport photographer!! he lives near silverstone and manages to get to some of the away f1 and wtcc races too. He loved my motorsport work and gave me his business card. He said he'd be around if i wanted to ask questions or maybe go to races. all in all, a good day.

    plus i love cornwall...

  • Christine09/03/2010 at 19:21

    Easy peasy!

    Excellent, thanks :)

Sounds like you had a great time. By the time you leave uni he should be working for someone and be able to recommend you

Also McLaren have tarted up their site and there are some videos with the drivers that I have n't seen before

You're doing better than me! I wrote out a big list of places I can go to do courses I like but I don't like the look of any of the places. I'm fancying Manchester atm I think....

Don't automatically rule out East Anglia unless you decide you want to study climate and environment as they slightly dented their reputation on that recently

i found it all feels alot more real when you actually go take a look round the uni itself :) am almost looking forward to my next interview on monday.

oh and i found out that they rejected loooooaadds of people after they submitted their mini projects, and there are about 60-70 of us wanting one of the 43 places available. i'm just pleased i got this far :)

  • Alison09/03/2010 at 19:30

I have a huuuuuge list at the moment but nowhere is very appealing. I really like Bristol for example but it's very expensive to live there for example and it's miles from anywhere!

    I quite like Leeds.

We'll have to see - last year's characteristics seemed to be that if you were kind on your tyres you sometimes couldn't get them to work (Brawn's problems). But that was without the extra fuel weight and we don't know how that'll change things.

  • Alianora La Canta09/03/2010 at 22:44

    I am getting worried, as well as Sunday being race day it is Mothers Day. Will I have to go to the mother in laws or my parents, in addition as my daughter is only 4 my wife is expecting me to be pampering to her every desire. Just as well I have Sky+ as I have some grave concerns re seeing the race live without interuption. Is anyone else having similar concerns? {Comment #159}

My parents are F1 supporters, so freeing Sunday morning of interruptions is the least of my worries (Mum likes watching the exciting bits and finds the engines soothing sounds to sleep to when it gets processional and Dad likes F1 too much to make a visit to his Mum clash).

Figuring out what to get Mum is my big conundrum, but hopefully something will come to me by the time the weekend comes round.

You certainly can leave the others blank if you want. When I did my UCAS application, there were only four advertised courses in the subject I wanted to do that were feasible from a logistical perspective. So there were two blank spaces on my application...

  • Alianora La Canta09/03/2010 at 23:05

By the way, I had an interview for a job as a receptionist this afternoon. It went well despite a lack of computers, but there are 67 applicants for around 25 "second interview" slots... ...and ultimately 1 job. I'm not exactly spending the first month's wages yet!

Mind you, I'm still happy because I found a Formula 1 Yearbook 2003-2004 in a second-hand shop after the interview. So I can get my fill of nostalgia at least...

They are doing 25 second interviews for one job? That is insane. Interviewing 67 in the first place is crazy. I assume this is government related

good question. we've managed to find a similar service to our existing amazon setup but with half price bandwidth. that's good news because our bank balance has enjoyed the break.

the cheaper option doesn't allow us to stream to iphones though, which would be my streaming nirvana. something that just works everywhere.

i would guess 7-10 days to get things sorted from when we start... so australia gp weekend. maybe. it is now topper most of the list.

  • Alianora La Canta09/03/2010 at 23:36

the interview went really well!

He said Massa couldn't handle MS but was fast enough to earn his respect. I have wondered if the 'all new MS' will do things differently, I would assume not.

    They are doing 25 second interviews for one job? That is insane. Interviewing 67 in the first place is crazy. I assume this is government related {Comment #511}

The "67 in the first place" might be government-related, but I doubt it - I got put through despite not meeting the minimum experience criteria, possibly due to having a lot of qualifications in the relevant areas.

The "25 for the second interview" almost certainly isn't. It's probably more to do with the fact that they couldn't spend as long as they wanted with us due to an unanticipated computer-related problem taking up most of the support staff members' time (I offered to help, but it was decided that confidentiality rules made me going near the system a bad idea). I know I got only half the time I was allocated to have in the interview as a result of this. My guess is the staff will weed out the obviously unsuitable and call back everyone else when they are able to give them their undivided attention. 25 is the most they can reasonably call back without stretching to a second day.

It would, of course, have to be an online university with possible "residentials" at selected motorsport-related events, because anything else wouldn't be #MFC enough for Sidepodcast ;)

Actually, that would make an interesting project...

I can't imagine ever doing more than 7 or 8 first interviews for one position. The cost of 65 interviews is horrific

You're right, most private sector companies would do no more than 8 first interviews (and I remember my last placement provider groaning because they wanted to pick between two candidates whose applications were expected and then got an unexpectedly good candidate from left field, increasing the first interviewees to 3...

Public sector organisations don't get that luxury, especially if they're attempting to get the "two ticks" disability certification and have to answer to many different sets of bureaucrats.

The cost of 65 interviews, in my estimation, is the entire energy of one person for 2 days, plus about 250 sheets of paper. When some of the invitees don't turn up (like the candidate due to be interviewed after me), that must be really frustrating...

If they have, they didn't drop any hints to that effect. I got the impression it was the support staff attempting to make the best of an awkward set of circumstances.

They couldn't do their job because the computers weren't working. If they had been, the individual might have been a bit stuck.

Getting hyped for the new season, sorting out my fantasy team.

    Cheers.

Thanks for the link. Only a few days left until we'll know for sure. :D

Hopefully Alonso will be the catalyst that removes the Clown shoes Ferrari have been wearing the last two years.
