Say hello to Wednesday as we reach the middle of the week. Who is getting unbelievably excited for Free Practice on Friday then? Yesterday we were discussing whether it was acceptable to leave a wedding early so you can watch qualifying. I say yes, how about you? Meanwhile, here are the other things we're talking about:

  • The Factbyte Factbox had a radical overhaul yesterday and finally completed the goal we had in mind for it since it debuted a year ago - live updates. There's more information about what we're trying to achieve, and what happened during the brief test last night on this post. Don't worry if you missed it, though, it'll be back plenty of times during the season!
  • It was a day for refreshing websites yesterday, as McLaren launched their new site, Williams had a fresh lick of paint, and Autosport introduced a new 2010 Season Guide. The new season preview edition of Grand Prix Plus emerged yesterday as well, so make sure you check that out if you haven't already. All good stuff that should keep you busy for a little while!
  • Whilst doing a bit of admin for F1 Big Picture, it occurred to us that we'd fallen into our trap of introducing concepts and not really telling anyone about them, so we decided that for 2010 we'd try and be a bit more transparent - or at least plug things more. This post over on F1 minute explains the pattern our Big Pictures take ahead of each race.

That should do it for now. There's more good stuff to come today, so we'll be keeping busy, but I will see you in the comments.

it was not all my spa money! And it was 25 hours from order to desk. I learned today our receptionists job title is "director of first impressions"

what no nascar in the daily post? let me redress the balance:

    Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

  • Alison10/03/2010 at 00:14

I'm sorry but it is completely not acceptable to skive someone's wedding to watch qualifying! :P

  • Alianora La Canta10/03/2010 at 00:15

Incidentally, I've been researching the how-to-set-up-a-university thing for Sidepodstudents, and it doesn't sound too hard as long as you don't want to grant any actual degrees. If you do, it gets really, really complicated...

  • me10/03/2010 at 00:15

    yeah it is.

murray was making his last commentating comeback.

  • Alison10/03/2010 at 00:20

    yeah it is.

Hmmmm I've skipped qualy/races for very mundane reasons. I'd say it was insulting to place these before wedding. You probably don't skip f1 for mundane life stuff though.

  • Pat W10/03/2010 at 00:21

I keep meaning to do an F1 preview... and an IndyCar preview... but then I realise I don't have anything different to add, and I'm far too lazy.

  • me10/03/2010 at 00:23

I'd say it was insulting to place these before wedding.

why? i don't enjoy weddings, i do enjoy qualifying.

You probably don't skip f1 for mundane life stuff though.

the way i see it, if i invited someone to a wedding and they said "yeah, but i have to leave early", to me that's better than not coming at all.

  • me10/03/2010 at 00:26

the way i see it, if i invited someone to a wedding and they said "yeah, but i have to leave early", to me that's better than not coming at all.

i guess what i mean is, i don't see myself as being so important that everyone has to drop everything on a day that i specify, so that it can be all about me.

which is kinda how i see weddings :)

  • Alison10/03/2010 at 00:26

the way i see it, if i invited someone to a wedding and they said "yeah, but i have to leave early", to me that's better than not coming at all.

    Yes I suppose it is.

I wander off in the middle of most f1 races to get some lunch! I haven't missed much of note so far....

  • Amy10/03/2010 at 00:27

i feel like i have broken my own no ipod rule but it does feel nice to know i can finally fit ALL my music on one device. They certainly have a lot more features than my old monochrome one so I shall have to have a play when its charged. Plus buying a refurb instead of a new one makes me feel like a good bargain hunter.

    http://thelapt...etimes-i-despair.html

Still believing or understanding the "punishment".

Still cannot fathom the fans that support what Edwards did.

Meanwhile, the house / flat / bedsit hunt begins afresh again...

What is not acceptable is planning your such an event without thinking of international and local races! if my buddy get married a weekend with races at St. Jovite (Mont Tremblant) ( http://www.lecircuit.com/circuit.cfm ) , there will be hell to pay! you can get married any old weekend!

Or provide a TV to watch.... "Excuse me Bishop, E.J. and D.C. are having it out..."

But what if other guests like football, and more like golf, and others are into rugby and.....

You have to just pick a time!

  • Bert10/03/2010 at 00:47

    heheh! :)

And if I remember my podcasts correctly, wasn't someone complaining about the videos on Autoblogs home page causinng page loading to be excruciatingly slow on a cruise ship?

  • me10/03/2010 at 00:47

You have to just pick a time!

    i agree with that. 100%.

but you should also be aware that it won't suit everyone.

  • Bert10/03/2010 at 00:47

In that case, too bad for the golfers!

I have the solution.... Have one's wedding AT a race! Finally a use for Valencia?

there may be more appropriate venues...

    ...maybe.

  • Pat W10/03/2010 at 00:58

Christine Blachford is now my 58th most-listened to artist in terms of Last.fm plays, with 93. I still have Sunday's Debrief, Joe and the Digests plus 3 x MFC. I just listened to 3 shows. I keep giving myself a break to catch up on other things and suddenly several weeks pass so I give myself a break on that to catch up on podcasts again, clearly I'm doing it wrong. :)

  • paul10/03/2010 at 00:59

i guess what i mean is, i don't see myself as being so important that everyone has to drop everything on a day that i specify, so that it can be all about me.

I suspect the rest of my family would kill me if I "wondered off" this Saturday.

just say "it's the first qualifying of the year, and it's going to be mental".

  • Pat W10/03/2010 at 01:02

I plan to be completely caught up by close of Thursday, in time for the season start.

Wondering if my Nokia battery will last long enough to get through a chunk of MWMs on Tuesday at the airport, on the plane, on the bus...

  • paul10/03/2010 at 01:02

just say "it's the first qualifying of the year, and it's going to be mental".

I tried that. Apparently my brother only gets married once, so I should pay attention. :D

Actually, this is one time being in a stupid time zone works OK.

  • Pat W10/03/2010 at 01:03

I discovered that Latitude can be used with my phone. I'm tempted to turn it on on Tuesday, when I land.. :)

MWM? I haven't listened to one in weeks. They did an F1 preview today, normal show tomorrow, IRL preview Thurs. I have no plans to catch up with those yet.

    er, how long is it?

  • Pat W10/03/2010 at 01:05

Tomorrow I'm doing digests, then a break for the quiz, then Joe's.

  • Pat W10/03/2010 at 01:06

I actually had no idea I was that far back :(

  • me10/03/2010 at 01:06

I have a 2hr wait at the airport when I land, for the bus from Porto (Portugal) to Vigo (Spain) which itself takes 2hrs. It may not be that interesting.

  • Amy10/03/2010 at 01:16

dear australia. There is a 2010 season preview show on tonight on one hd at 7 or 730, i cannot remember which. Be sure to watch, with no cam mcconville it may almost be tolerable. Love, me.

  • paul10/03/2010 at 01:19

    will it beat amy's pod?

Probably not, as it won't play podcasts. It will take photos though, which is what I need for my FIRST GRAND PRIX !!!

    morning Jim

  • RubberGoat10/03/2010 at 07:32

    Morning all.

Our Friends at the USA F1 blog have produced an e-booklet with some F1 and WRC stuff in it too - check it out, it's quite good: http://issuu.com/flood1/docs/the_journal_issue_1

e-booklets seem all the rage at the moment eh?

  • paul10/03/2010 at 07:39

Oh, it's one of those flash things. I understand the need to protect copyright, but I really hate those things. PDF please!

  • paul10/03/2010 at 07:44

Any Aussies lurking - there is an F1 preview on OneHD at 7:30 tonight (45 minutes)

  • Rocket10/03/2010 at 07:50

I'm lurking but will still be at work. Ah well, I do have an hd box this year which means live live live F1!

    No, you're probably right.

I will take this chance to say hi to Amy, Rubber goat, Christine, me and Lou and....ahhh, so many names to remember. You know who you are. I've missed you all.

I can't fight :-) I never used WIndows 7 so I can't say what is better or worse. All I can say is what I prefer :-)

I am sorting through my unsorted music to put onto my iPod and I found a second Simple Minds song and I actually know it! Maybe I will stick around for their concert after the race after all :D

so Simple Minds this year... I remember 2 years ago when they had Kiss there were people taking up the positions for the concert even before the F1 race started -that was interesting, people paying for F1 but missing the race in favour of concert :-)

I know quite a few people who only went for Kiss, and just as many who only went for The Who last year. I don't see the shows this year having quite the same draw

Camera is still "in transit". The courier web site does not update often enough. It should say "still on the truck" or something

I used the leopard before snow leopard. frankly can't see too much obvious difference other than those pics of snow leopard for the desktop :-) but I can see the big difference in cost of OS for Mac and Windows

I stayed for about half of both but after a whole day at a race track I was a little cranky, especially last year, the later start meant it was very dark and very cold by the time they came on stage.

F1Wolf, question sir. What language do you work in?

    where ?

Sorry, should clarify. When you go to work, what language do you do your day job in?

  • F1Wolf10/03/2010 at 08:54

Sorry, should clarify. When you go to work, what language do you do your day job in?

English mostly, although that chatter around me is 90% Cantonese :-)

    Hello one and all.

  • RubberGoat10/03/2010 at 08:55

Sorry, should clarify. When you go to work, what language do you do your day job in?

Reason I am asking - you know I work in an English-speaking office in a foreign country and would like to know what languages are spoken around the office. Feels like English is only the official language here, not the spoken one!

  • RubberGoat10/03/2010 at 08:55

well this city is 95% Cantonese and rest is from all over the world. at the end it comes down to in what environment you spent most of your time. you can survive perfectly well without speaking the local lingo at all, but you can do the same without knowing a word of English as long as you speak Cantonese :-)

  • F1Wolf10/03/2010 at 08:58

It's not so much content I'm worried about - we have tons of feedback - but just whether people would want to listen

Well +1 vote. I would listen and feedback more. I don't bother most times because I don't want to take up the time on the Debriefs

  • paul10/03/2010 at 09:14

Yay Paul! It makes sense to me because the debriefs keep on getting longer, and I keep having to fight them to make them under an hour so Mr C's head doesn't explode. But I only want to make stuff that people want to listen to!

There is a Formula 3-spec car retrofitted with components made of carrots and fuelled on leftovers from chocolate factories. They still haven't invented sustainable brakes though.

    So 2012 could be the end of the world ... for XP anyway {Comment #117}

This could be a pain in the neck for me. I've yet to see an "advanced-drive aware" OS that's of practical use to me (Vista's nearly unusable for me, Windows 7 apparently doesn't run old games very well and the game I play most - Sims 2 - requires a Microsoft operating system to function with all its expansion packs). I'll just have to hope my current hard drives keep working well...

To make themselves look fast because they don't expect to finish?

Remember in testing, on none of the Barcelona days did they run as far as one Grand Prix distance... and we know the engine is OK because Williams did...

Well +1 vote. I would listen and feedback more. I don't bother most times because I don't want to take up the time on the Debriefs

Yay Paul! It makes sense to me because the debriefs keep on getting longer, and I keep having to fight them to make them under an hour so Mr C's head doesn't explode. But I only want to make stuff that people want to listen to!

Do it! I especially like hearing from people who aren't commenters, because I sort of already know what commenters think..

They're using the same graphical engine as they used for DiRT and Grid, which look similar so trust me there's no photoshopping going on there

I doubt it. They're only there because they've been working on it throughout 2009, plus they have to go through getting all data and whatnot off 2010 teams. The press release says the full game will be 2010 cars anyways.

  • Leigh O'Gorman10/03/2010 at 14:04

It's not like it was the only time he was hit by an official vehicle. His car was hit by the safety car at Monaco. To be fair it was a rally driver driving the safety car. Jean Ragnotti

Although obiously what they're using now will be heavily improved over that. I doubt you'll notice the bloom when you're playing, it looked amazing in the game they've used the EGO engine for already though

Looking at twitter, there'll be videos in a week of the game so that should give a better idea of how it'll look :)

Maybe they'll do what they did with the F1 2009 wii game for a few races before release where they released a video of racing at the track that had just been raced at in real life?

Comparison videos are always very smart as long as your game is realistic ;)

I think they eventually said that the guy driving that was the local police chief. I thought that kind of stupidity stopped in the 80s when some big cheese's daughter (in Argentina??) really really wanted to drive the safety car or she was going to have a tantrum. So daddy let her drive and she drove round so slowly it was ridiculous

  • Lukeh10/03/2010 at 14:12

    I believe it was donuts.

Did I ever tell you my donuts at gregs story?

    No?

(Make sure I forget to ask if you want to ;) )

I went to a gregs one time and bought the nice chicken salad sandwich and a bottle of coke. I went to the counter and prepared to pay...

Man: "You get a free donut with that."

    Me: "No thanks, I'm fine."

Man: "But it's a free donut, it's free."

Me: "I don't really want one. I'll just take the sammich and coke"

Man: "But it's a free donut, surely you want a free donut."

Me: "No, honestly, I'm fine. You have it."

Man: "That would be against the rules. You should have it. They're good... And free."

Me: "No I'm fine, how much does that come to?"

Man: "I probably shouldn't sell it to you, if you aren't going to take the donut."

    Me: "Honestly?"

Man: "No, obviously not, but I can't believe you'd waste food like that."

Me: "But you can just sell it to somebody else, somebody who wants it. If I take I'll definitely throw it in the bin."

    Man: "You would wouldn't you..."

Me: "Umm... Okay I'll take the donut."

Man: "Only if you promise to eat it."

    Me: "Okay... I promise."

    Man: "Hmmm..."

He didn't believe me. Which was probably fair as I had decided the safest option would be to give the donut to Katherine.

This might sound daft but why don't they scrub down the road. Like properly wash it and use brushes to scrub the dust of it.

It's a bit like trying to sweep the dirt from your camping spot in the woods. Track is surrounded by dust/sand and there can be heavy winds at times so it's constantly getting fresh dust.

  • Stuart C10/03/2010 at 15:50

Brilliant idea. I vote that anyone who's Twittering rubbish gossip or banal "It's hot and dusty here"-type stuff should be put to work doing that.

Okay yeah I get that. But wouldn't it help to at least clear everything before the running starts. Maybe get some kids in carts or whatever to do a lot of off-line running to keep it clear.

there will be nothing to read prior to the race, we'll have seen it all, and the bbc f1 build up will be a waste of space (more so than last year).

Rubbering the track is always great. Offline rubbering would be fantastic and a great way to help overtaking opportunities. One of the main problems with Bahrain being a precession has to do with what I said earlier, that offline is so slippery that overtaking is done with great risk.

I was given a very nice leather-bound notebook for christmas a few years ago. Once you'd used it up you could take the old paper out and slide new stationery in. Needless to say, I could never find a suitable replacement in the right size...

Most nig circuits use a jet engine on a truck to do that. The other option is to jet wash it. It won't tkae long to dry there

And now that they have added the extra corners overtaking is going to be way less frequent.

One of the reasons I perfer Hockenheim over Nurburgring is because they take better care of the track in terms of cleaning up oil and such, and they also offer open track days on it which helps rubbering. They dont offer open days on Sudschleife.

Fair enough. I've not driven it, only the old circuit, so I might be biased.

My only source of knowledge being that Red Bull video, it seems like they've added more tight corners. I'm sure that's what people complain about most Tilke circuits, too many slow corners?

We had a discussion on here and the view was split between bad idea and wait and see. I still think Tilke gets paid a rate per corner. I can't see any other reason why he puts way too many in all his tracks

lol... He must also have to pay for the pavement, as thats the only way to explain why everything is so tight and narrow.

  • Steven Roy10/03/2010 at 16:14

    damage incorporated:

It's not as bad as I expected. All the mess in the centre of the track is irrelevant because that was only grass before anyway. The flooded underpass is irrelevant because that is to get to the new pit complex that doesn't exist. The trenches across the track cna be filled easily. Won't be the smoothest track in the world and will need to be re-done by the end of the season but it would get them racing.

The only real problem is that the old pits have been knocked down before the new pits were built. They should be able to use some portakabins for race control etc and use marquees for pits, scrutineering etc to get themselves up and runing and generating income.

I see nothing in that video that cannot be botched to get them up and running for this season at very little cost.

  • Lukeh10/03/2010 at 16:14

I'm assuming on Friday we'd expect to see a lot of the HRT car on track for both sessions? (if it's reliable of course)

Maybe they'll just wing it, turn up in qualifying and be 5 seconds ahead of everyone.

I feel like part of my sanity just got taken away.

  • me10/03/2010 at 16:16

That's good news. It still makes for a sad sight though but at least they should be able to fix it and, as Christine says, take away any traces of Gillett's 'work'

  • Pat W10/03/2010 at 16:16

It looked on the video that they were doing a before and after showing the old pits there then not there. If they are still there then they should get their finger out and get on with it because there nothing to stop them racing.

I don't see what's so wrong with the track? There are strips missing but it doesn't look like more than a weeks work to get it bodged into a usable state. What was wrong with it that made them decide to dig it up like that?

I assume they were running sevices to the middle of the track. The track itself need little work to sort it. There is some work needed around the underpass to create some run off area but it is not exactly major.

i said during testing that LAT have a big problem.

autosport could only get test pics up faster than everyone else once they used sutton. haymarket owns LAT and still could do nothing to speed up the process.

I dont have the best of systems and I run it ok. I have a lot of the eye candy turned off though. Now, if I try to do a capture, I have to do some fine tuning. Below is what iRacing looks like on my comp.

That's sooner than the F1 2009 game showed up on Wii. It wasn't released until mid November last year and I didn't see it in stores until Dec due to it's rarity.

I'm just hoping that the game will not be nearly as bad as F1 2009 was. That game was horrible... I was severely disappointed when I got it. I still play F1 Championship Edition more than I play F1 2009.

Hi Steven. It's treating me mostly well but the usual business (and the off season) has led to me having to ignore most of the offseason - I listen to the podcasts for f1minute about 10 at a time to keep up! i do enjoy my new job, and now that we seem to be on the good side of winter, things are looking up :) How are you doing?

I say no to leaving, but finding a tv somewhere nearby then coming back is acceptable. the trick is never to actually say goodbye either then people will know you're leaving. discretion. buy a little tv and sit out the back somewhere,

Trying to get excited. I've kind of blocked out F1 for that long so trying to hype myself up - usual drama - apart from cheering for Mark Webber, not really sure who I like anymore, a problem I've had since damon Hill left. I think I'll cheer for the hulk just because it gets writers so many options if he does anything.

Just a shakedown. 24hr endurance runs are not allowed by the FIA.

The link to the mags should be working in the posts...

It doesn't matter which circuit you are, Croft, Donington, Silverstone, they all have club racing. Get that back for a few years, get everything stable, then start getting other series back in.

  • Pat W10/03/2010 at 20:44

Club Racing? That's not what Donington exists for!

They have nothing else this season.

A couple of series programmed in some dates for late in the year. I don't know if those have been removed yet.

  • startledbunny10/03/2010 at 20:44

The Sad state of Donington Park. I want to cry now :(

Looks like the roads round here.

I want to grab Mr Gillett and give him a hard slap.

BTCC is one, just checked and they have 19 September. That's acheivable.

'wow i love sidepodcast! you make a suggestion and in less than 5 minutes its up!'

The shorter track is where all that is shown in that video. They don't go near the Melbourne loop

  • Jon Waldock10/03/2010 at 20:51

    Wouldn't it need a resurfacing?

They can patch it up easy enough and get some club racing going on.

Club Racing? That's not what Donington exists for!

Ah well, as long as it DOES exist I don't really care...

    Ah no. You say club racing, but read this;

    Just heard from a source that the Virgin car will not finish the race! as there Fuel tank is too small to finish it! {Comment #233}

Please let this not be true (whether it's because the fuel tank is bigger than they think, the car naturally burns less fuel than they think or simply because Timo and Lucas are very fuel-efficient...)

Oddly enough, the site didn't ask me to sign up again or give me a login/registration screen - it simply let me into a blank-squared live timing page and immediately kicked me out again (possibly because it's still Wednesday).

    Wonder if they're ever going to have plans to get the track less dusty. {Comment #411}

They threw all their ideas to make the track less dusty at the circuit before it opened the first time...

  • The Boston Red Scott10/03/2010 at 23:03

nice looking mobile (phone) version of the F1 website too. with ringtones under the downloads section - just can't get it to work.

  • Jim Newman10/03/2010 at 23:03

they look way too cool for me.

Yea, he bought me a pair of hideous Raikkonen Puma's so I think it's time to pay him back.

g'night Lou and g'night everyone. history includes Jenson winning you know?!

not sure that fits into german foreign policy but i'll give it a shot.

    *is gone*

  • Lukeh10/03/2010 at 23:05

Odd sidenote, Carlos Slim, the man who was reportedly buying Honda F1, is now the world's richards man.

  • RG10/03/2010 at 23:05

not sure that fits into german foreign policy but i'll give it a shot.

Easy, bought out by Germans looking at foreign teams for their new policy on entering F1.

    *also goes*

Odd sidenote, Carlos Slim, the man who was reportedly buying Honda F1, is now the world's richards man.

    Oh my goodness... richards?

Richest. Apologies for my stupidity :(

  • Alianora La Canta10/03/2010 at 23:07

    I still think Tilke gets paid a rate per corner. I can't see any other reason why he puts way too many in all his tracks {Comment #469}

    Corners = slow

    Slow = safe

Safe = brownie points from FIA

Brownie points from FIA = higher chance of getting to do more circuits in the future

  • The Boston Red Scott10/03/2010 at 23:10

Odd sidenote, Carlos Slim, the man who was reportedly buying Honda F1, is now the world's richards man.

He did a deal with one of my work places here. I wonder if that had something to do with it.

  • Alianora La Canta10/03/2010 at 23:10

    All the mess in the centre of the track is irrelevant because that was only grass before anyway. {Comment #473}

It would be irrelevant except that they need that turned back before the end of June for the Download festival. Without the racing, that's their biggest money-spinner and likely to be subsidising the redevelopment work elsewhere on the circuit. Still, three months is quite a bit of time, and as far as I'm aware the racing that's scheduled to happen at Donington starts after that point.

  • Jim Newman10/03/2010 at 23:11

Ok folks, time to go work out. Take care.

  • Alianora La Canta10/03/2010 at 23:13

    and so did DC.

    and?

    no-one told renault? {Comment #493}

Perhaps the DC pit board characters are in case they need to tell the BBC to stop jinxing one of their drivers mid-race?

  • The Boston Red Scott10/03/2010 at 23:17

So with McLaren bringing in live telemetry with this race1.0 thing, I wonder if renault will provide their data like they used to?

  • James10/03/2010 at 23:20

  • Alianora La Canta10/03/2010 at 23:20

    It'll also be better than the F1: Championship Edition was, as that was released after the 06 season was already finished. The game had Yuji Ide in it... {Comment #619}

Which in turn was better than Formula 1 '96, which managed to be released after that season and yet have Taki Inoue in it. At least Yuji had actually driven a F1 car in 2006; Taki ran out of money two weeks before the first 1996 race, ending his career and giving Fisi his break into F1...

  • The Boston Red Scott10/03/2010 at 23:25

hometime. see you all later. nice link james to the cars. i should check out the italian websites to see what they've got going.

  • Lukeh10/03/2010 at 23:26

I have found a heavy rock, almost metal, version of Backstreet Boys songs. Interesting.

  • Pat W10/03/2010 at 23:30

@Startledbunny - I've found your other entries in the spam bin. Did you want to use one of them instead of the one that somehow worked?

    Well I'm confused.

  • Alianora La Canta10/03/2010 at 23:53

I have to say, these teams and their fancy new sites is all well and good but one of the items on their to do list must have been to obfuscate the press releases. Can't find anything anywhere anymore.

    *slowly opens dictionary* {Comment #827}

Obfuscation - making people open dictionaries needlessly.

That is an option I hadn't considered. I know Max did everything he could to stop actual racing.

  • me11/03/2010 at 00:01

How can they release a free official timing app when the've already released a paid timing app?

    no idea. two thoughts:

    a) bernie is mega upset with @f1timingapp so is trying to screw their business

    b) he likes the app so much, he's paying them to produce a cut down version

    but why no desktop improvements?

  • Jim Newman11/03/2010 at 00:01

Dunno, but it looks like the free one isn't released either. I cant find a dload spot for it

  • Bassano11/03/2010 at 00:02

The iTunes link they supply is just to the stores Home page

These people just don't understand the internet!

Hopefully, but I have a blackberry curve 8330 so hopefully that one is released too.

    Yes!

I've booked my accommodation for Cape Town [nice apartment with 2 ensuites and balcony] AND found a bar just minutes away that sells Guinness, has free WiFi and is showing F1.
