Hello and welcome to horrible Thursday. However, I believe this one won't be as bad as others we have experienced recently, as we are all focused on the goings on in Bahrain. We were super busy yesterday and we're going headfirst into the weekend in a similar fashion. Meanwhile, here are some things we're talking about:

  • I was catching up on some blog feeds yesterday and discovered this excellent post from RG, discussing people in Formula One, and motorsport generally, in the north of England. I liked the post, even if it does appear that RG forgot all about Rob Smedley. Humph!
  • Mr C's favourite blogger ScarbsF1 has a Bahrain Preview post up which goes into a bit more detail about the McLaren rear wing issue. We're expecting the FIA to inspect the part and make a decision in Bahrain, which is leaving it a bit late if you ask me.
  • We posted plenty of fab things here on Sidepodcast yesterday, including your Bahrain Race Information. This tells you important facts and figures about the race, and highlights the TV and podcast schedule. The F1 Digest Preview was posted, and Mr C had a quick look at some of the new websites from teams.
  • Also, for everyone who has been curious about the Joe Saward competition - it is now closed, but we have not yet picked a winner. We will do so as soon as we can, and let you know via the blog. If there's no post, it's because we haven't got our winner yet!

That should do it for now. Let's all keep our fingers crossed that Thursday goes okay, and I will see you in the comments.

Found it. It is one of the towers on the Kremlin wall to the left of Lenin's mauseleum. Couldn't understand why I had not noticed a tower like that when I was there but with Lenin's tomb and St Basil's very close to it then it is not as noticeable as I expected due to its surroundings

it really isnt. This is why mika needs to be lewis's manager. Its still one of my goals in life to see him in person and that would really help my chances.

Before I go to sleepies, a bit of #MFC news. Sony have literally 10 minutes ago unveiled their competitor to, well, you might recognise another console's way of playing games...

    http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/9/2010/03/500x_playstationmove.jpg

It's for the Playstation 3 rather than a new console for Sony, but it's basically their Wii competitor. With that, I bid you goodnight.

You could probably pick a team now and not touch it all season and still score well. We have 33 teams in our league so it should be enough for it to get entertaining later in the season

  • Jim Newman11/03/2010 at 01:40

So I suffer from high stress and I was talking to my Doctor about that. He tried to prescribe me Xanax or something to mellow me out but I need to be sharp at work, so he suggested some Valerian Root pills. I bought a bottle today and boy do these pills stink. I'm not quite sure what Valerian Root is, but I think it might be in the same genus as dung.

  • Jim Newman11/03/2010 at 01:41

I wish I could transmit smell over the internet to highlight my point of how bad these pills stink...

An unusual feature of valerian is that the essential oil of valerian root is a cat attractant similar to catnip. The active compound in valerian for this is actinidine. Cat attractants might mimic the odor of cat urine

    Good Morning people of sidepodland...

    Yesterday I sent this tweet to RF1PaddockPass;

Dear @rf1paddockpass. You seem to have forgotten that Kimi, DC and Piquet (remember him?) aren't in F1 anymore....http://bit.ly/9sGaRT

    http://twitter.com/jonwaldock/statuses/10278493008

    Scarily they replied;

@jonwaldock Ha ha, yes, you need all of the signs just in case...

    http://twitter.com/rf1paddockpass/statuses/10283597525

    So, slightly concerned that Piquets coming back I replied;

@rf1paddockpass Riiight..If any of those pit board signs gets used during the year (meaning that driver is on track) I shall buy you a pint!

    Interesting new post from Jake:

Actually, as Nico was knocking on the window to get someone to let him in, I said to Michael, "It's Nico" and as quick as a flash the old master said "Ah, leave him out there!". OK, it was a flippant comment said in jest, but it was also, tellingly perhaps, his instant reaction.

Lotus will make it. Probably Virgin too, depends how fickle Branson is. I don't have high hopes for this lot though.

  • me11/03/2010 at 10:13

They made an extra day in the week?? Why didn't they share it with everyone?

Why do you think that? I'm not sure about Virgin, and Lotus are saying the right things, but who knows if that implies commitment?

I think Fernandes is solid and committed.

I think Branson is for now, but not sure about long-term.

HRT are the ones scrabbling for finances.

This is the same Branson who put in as little as possible to keep his name on the Brawn last year? I don't know, I can see him being a bit fickle...

I think Fernandes will stay as long as his airline stays in the black...

I think Hispania are going to be as slow as Mastercard Lola were and will not last the season.

the only good thing about him coming back is the knowledge that sooner or later he is going to get too old and have to make the 'i'm retiring at the end of the season' speech... after which we can all party :)

[INT: Mercedes Motorhome. Nico Rosberg is sitting on the side of his bed. His feet don't quite touch the floor. A video phone Hologram of Keke Rosberg is floating in front of him.]

Nico: But Old Man Rosberg you promised that when we got to Mercedes I would be Number 1. I would finally have a chance.

Keke: Trust me Nico, trust me.

Nico: But what can I do?

Keke: Tonight, before first practice you must go down to the garage and sit in the car. Visualise the entire race. Feel the power coursing through your mind. And while you're there take a bit out of your team mate's car.

Nico: I don't know Old Man Rosberg. Ever since you started appearing in holographic video phone form you've seemed a little weird and power crazy.

Keke: Trust me Nico, trust me.

    Nico: Okay.

[INT: Mercedes Garage on the eve of the Bahrain first practice.

Nico Rosberg is entering the garage. Finally, he thinks to himself, I have made it. I have a chance. But one thing stands in my way. He see's Schumacher's car and walks towards it.

He sees a helmet... Somebody is in the car. Two hands rise up, remove the helmet. It's Michael. He turns to Nico.]

Michael: Nico, I am your father.

    Nico: Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!

Just wondering which stories the Telegraph actually broke re F1....

    Arf, arf!

At what point do the scales tip and we lose out because of this though?

So long as the papers take their stories from agencies who have useful people on the ground – as Reuters and PA do – it's not necessarily a bad thing.

who was the first team to embrace twitter?

In F1? The first I saw was BMW Sauber but that was just a link feed really. The first to actually talk to people was either McLaren or Force India.

Possibly the first to give the 'this is what its like to be there!' is Claire.

But Vision in IRL and Highcroft in ALMS are did the latter a year ago..

    http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/03/11/thoughts-from-the-paddock-in-bahrain/

Noticably interested in seeing the outcome at this bit:

The FIA World Council met today in Bahrain and we hear that there may be some kind of sanction against the USF1 team for failing to appear.

What did they do to Toyota for leaving? I doubt it will be that harsh.

  • jpancoast11/03/2010 at 16:50

What did they do to Toyota for leaving? I doubt it will be that harsh.

Well, what can they do, really? USF1 has no money and the only way they could ever even come close to possibly fielding a team is if someone else took over and kicked Ken and Peter to the curb.

    What did they do to Toyota for leaving? I doubt it will be that harsh. {Comment #451}

Toyota handed its entry back without fuss, so presumably any settlement will also be done without fuss. I don't know what that penalty is, but it's probably a) financial and b) cheaper than their current recall issues.

USF1 dragged F1 through the mud, so F1 is now taking the liberty of dragging USF1 through the mud. Ironically the punishment may be lighter on the grounds that there is now nothing left to penalise (or soon won't be) while Toyota actually exists.

  • jpancoast11/03/2010 at 17:01

    Ban them from re-submitting

    Ever {Comment #454}

I think USF1 did a pretty effective job of banning itself from re-submitting without the FIA intervening ;) But as a token gesture to deter others, it's a reasonable idea.

It's pretty good, quite an arcadey type of rallying game though and more racing based than actual rally stages. It's worth picking up though. They're using the same graphical engine etc for F1 2010, on a sidenote.

Personally I think Petrov is a decent driver, but no better than Heidfeld or De La Rosa. It was good to see him calm down so much last year, but worrying that it took him so long

I think he's been good lower down but I don't know how good/bad he'll be in F1. Make or break year this year.

i think Jenson is a good influence on Lewis...

Question to Jenson and Lewis: just been watching the dynamic between you two guys while the other three have been answering questions at the front. You’ve been having a good laugh and a joke, sharing comments etc. Is that a good indicator of the friendship/relationship you two have already developed over the past few weeks together?

JB: It’s all for show! Exactly what we were told to do by Steve (press officer Steve Cooper).

LH: I agree. We’re focusing on a potential move to acting in the future!

JB: And no one’s asking us any questions, so…'

It is a moveable aero device. I hadn't thought abou that. It is also a driver controllable aero device which also makes it illegal. Of course the hub caps that have just been banned were illegal for four different reasons but still declared legal.

    On the 107% rule.

The only way the rule can be introduce now is if the teams agree. Who is going to agree to a rul that risks putting them out of business?

But then his helmet is moving with his head all that time, that interrupts the airflow, as do the wheels when cornering. Both affect the airflow, speed and ultimately laptime.

I love it - Innovation is what makes F1 so special.

  • Bassano11/03/2010 at 21:15

It is a moveable aero device.

    I don't agree

  • Turkey Machine11/03/2010 at 21:15

that makes the driver a movable device. not the same at all.

In the same argument that the driver's head makes all the difference to the airflow going through the airbox, yes I can see that argument. However using a hole that is deliberately covered at choice times to gain an aerodynamic advantage, far from being unsporting, I'm quite sure is illegal in the "moveable aerodynamic devices" bracket.

Something has to move to change the aerodynamic flow.

  • Bassano11/03/2010 at 21:16

I'm quite sure is illegal in the "moveable aerodynamic devices" bracket.

    It passed scrutineering

  • Steven Roy11/03/2010 at 21:16

    I don't agree

The tube that the driver adjusts is an aerodynamic device since squeezing or not squeezing it affets the aero map of the car. Bear in mind that the mass damper was banned as an illegal aero device.

  • Bassano11/03/2010 at 21:16

Something has to move to change the aerodynamic flow.

    Yes, the driver

    It's very clever

  • Turkey Machine11/03/2010 at 21:17

    It passed scrutineering

Because they don't have the innovation to go "ooh, hang on, that comes under x section in the rulebook, let's have a look at that again?"

  • me11/03/2010 at 21:17

I'm quite sure is illegal in the "moveable aerodynamic devices" bracket.

it's all fine and horner admitted last week they don't have a leg to complain on.

    GO STAND IN THE CORNER.

    The shame of it all.........

The tube that the driver adjusts is an aerodynamic device since squeezing or not squeezing it affets the aero map of the car. Bear in mind that the mass damper was banned as an illegal aero device.

The tube doesn't have to be squeezed, just the inlet restricted by a knee or some such

  • me11/03/2010 at 21:17

Or Newey has a better version and doesn't want it kyboshed

  • Bassano11/03/2010 at 21:18

Because they don't have the innovation to go "ooh, hang on, that comes under x section in the rulebook, let's have a look at that again?"

    Doesn't matter

    For now, it's legal

  • Turkey Machine11/03/2010 at 21:18

he doesn't adjust anything. he covers a hole with his leg?

By moving the leg to cover the hole the leg becomes an aerodynamic device. ;)

  • Steven Roy11/03/2010 at 21:18

The tube doesn't have to be squeezed, just the inlet restricted by a knee or some such

Doesn't matter. Driver controlled aero is illegal

  • Bassano11/03/2010 at 21:18

    Quite possible

  • Bassano11/03/2010 at 21:19

Doesn't matter. Driver controlled aero is illegal

Then why has no one used that argument with the scrutineers?

  • Turkey Machine11/03/2010 at 21:20

Then why has no one used that argument with the scrutineers?

As mentioned earlier, the scrutineers most of the time don't know what they're doing, despite their job. Remember the 1999 Malaysia cockup?

  • Turkey Machine11/03/2010 at 21:21

As mentioned earlier, the scrutineers most of the time don't know what they're doing, despite their job. Remember the 1999 Malaysia cockup?

Also, they work to a reference plane, and a rulebook published by the FIA at any given moment. Engineers work around this on a daily basis.

  • Steven Roy11/03/2010 at 21:22

Then why has no one used that argument with the scrutineers?

Same as with the brake cooling hub caps that had to be taken off to cool the brakes. F1 and logic don't go hand in hand. I wonder how long before someone installs a hand throttle so that the driver has a free leg for the full lap. Zanardi could end up making a comeback.

I guess we should watch out for drivers having odd lumps on their legs to block aero holes

    You utter cynic.... ;)

  • Turkey Machine11/03/2010 at 21:27

Oh and for what it's worth, I doubt the extra section to Bahrain makes that much of a difference in terms of aerodynamic choices for setup. Still 4 long straights, just a few more corners in between. :D

  • Adie11/03/2010 at 21:28

i think we found the off-season sandbaggers.

    You utter cynic.... ;)

    Were they ever sandbagging though?

From what I saw, they were the most methodical and dilligent of all the teams with their testing and aero correlation.

I'm just pleased Button's there (at the moment) as if this is to be believed he's got a better chance of winning that he would have had he stayed at Merc.

Mind you, their debuting their new sooper-dooper-mega-death-star-diffuser tomorrow, so maybe the earth will start to spin backwards at 07:10 GMT. LHC anyone? Nah, Schumacher's back.

Since when has the monocoque been homologated?

This year the monocoque is also is subject to homologation and hence cannot be altered until the 2011 season.

  • Bassano11/03/2010 at 23:38

Since when has the monocoque been homologated?

This year I think, didn't Christine mention it in 'the rules' digest

  • me11/03/2010 at 23:42

Since when has the monocoque been homologated?

christine says it was mentioned in the f1 digest preview show:

    The
FIA
have
also
specified
 more
homologated
 parts.
The
 survival
 cell,
roll
 structures,
wheels
and
 side impact
 structures
must
not
be
replaced
 unless
teams
 have
a
 very
good
reason.
If
they’re
 damaged
 or
considered
unsafe,
the
 FIA
can
approve
a
replacement,
 but
otherwise,
we’ll
be
looking
at
essentially
the
same
cars
all
year.

    Probably not :(

  • Alison12/03/2010 at 00:10

Mine build and build until either i get a new computer or itunes has a fit and deletes them all

At one point I went through and spent ages tweaking the settings for them all so they all did magic auto deleting things at suitable times but then all the settings were deleted and I really don't have the patience to do it all again.

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 00:10

As am I, welcome to the club Joe!

I have no one since Kimi went WRC, I think I'll be going for Vitantonio....good choice?

  • Joe in Fla12/03/2010 at 00:14

    Hi Joe. How's Florida?

About to get very wet. But the cold weather has finally abated

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 00:15

I have no one since Kimi went WRC, I think I'll be going for Vitantonio....good choice?

Some think he just needs a good machine to prove it, I've picked him in my Fantasy Racers team

    We shall see

  • Joe in Fla12/03/2010 at 00:17

    We shall see

he deserves a good season. I think the new teams will be so far back they'll think they're in front.

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 00:18

About to get very wet. But the cold weather has finally abated

I thought it was always warm there

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 00:19

I am curious to see how the Force India drivers compare against each other and what effect di Resta doing some Friday sessions will have

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 00:19

I thought it was always warm there

    It's relative

Not much central heating in Florida I'm guessing

  • Joe in Fla12/03/2010 at 00:19

I thought it was always warm there

No we've had the coldest winter since '81. Most of Feb, it was in the 40's at night. It suck shivering while drinking beer

Hello all, I'm giddy at the start of the season

Hey Joe. I'm not Giddy, or excited or anything. :( I don't know why.

  • Joe in Fla12/03/2010 at 00:21

Not much central heating in Florida I'm guessing

No we have it, and this is the first winter I have used it very much. Mostly I'm too cheap to turn it on. But the weather is now Florida-like, windy in the mid to high 70's and cool at night, perfect for listening to Rays games on the lanai and beer

Sounds like everything is not sweetness and light down Brackley way. According to Joe data will not be shared between the two cars. Looks like Mr Insecurity doesn't want Nico to see his data

You have to think if he is quicker than one of the regular drivers he will be shoehorned in

which means no! (this is a good thing, work with me here)

F1 isn't really my big thing, so i dont get hugely excited about it

  • Jon Waldock12/03/2010 at 00:30

Are you more excited by WSR or GP2?

I am more excited about going to Britcar on Saturday. I am equally excited about the prospect of 6.5 hours of BTCC coverage on 4th April

  • Alison12/03/2010 at 00:30

which means no! (this is a good thing, work with me here)

Excited would be the wrong word yes. I will enjoy watching though. I'm not fanatical. Although I did out-knowledge some proper f1 fans at work today. I was so proud!

  • Jon Waldock12/03/2010 at 00:30

Nooooo I mean I booked some time off work for myself. I wouldn't expect him to do things like buy flights anytime soon.... Far too organised.

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 00:32

No, Steven will let us know when the time's right

  • Alison12/03/2010 at 00:33

    ooh about what?

I found a couple of staff designing an f1 track on a piece of paper. I just happened to remark "move over Herman Tilke" and they didn't know who he was :D #soproud
