It's Friday and at long last the 2010 Season is underway. In just a few short hours we will be up again, ready to watch Free Practice 1 and from then on, it's all about the racing. Well, hopefully. There's lots of good stuff and many threads to come today, so keep your eyes peeled so you don't miss a thing.

  • Jake has written another great blog post, this time talking about time spent with some of the drivers ahead of the weekend's action. I particularly find the Schumacher/Rosberg stuff fascinating because we've seen visual evidence of their distaste for each other now, and... it's scary stuff!
  • It's the last day to change your Fantasy Racers teams and whilst there will be a reminder post along later, I thought it was worth mentioning now. Particularly as I want to give a shout out for Pat's fabulous post about the different prediction and fantasy F1 games that are available at the moment. I had no idea there were so many!
  • All that stuff about McLaren's rear wing is coming to a head now the teams have gathered together, and there is plenty of discussion about the silver car's extra hole. Scarbs has the detail (for Mr C), whilst Autosport put it into English (for me). Ahh, controversy. Is it November yet?
  • In self-promotion news, Mr C wrote a great introduction to the Force India podcast which makes a triumphant return for 2010. More audio from teams is greatly appreciated. The man also posted a breakout regarding Renault's new sponsor, and he actually managed to create a picture with no red in it. Woohoo!

That'll do it for now. I know you're excited already, so instead, why not tell me how and where you are watching Free Practice, if you are. I'll see you in the comments.

If I'd thought about it, seems quite natural

I bow to your superior F1 knowledge ;)

There are also rumours that there is a certain amount of friction inside Mercedes GP as the data of the two cars is not being shared as it is in other teams

    2 q's-

    1. Is there an archive of these daily chat streams?

    2. Has Bernie ever visited this, or come sniffing around for ideas?

  • Alison12/03/2010 at 00:48

Hooray live timing app is downloading! First time i tried it told me my phone was not supported even though its in the list of devices. Second time was a charm. This might be just what I need at my races this year :D

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 00:48

Eurgh. That's not ideal for them is it...

    Expected behaviour from Darth though

  • Alison12/03/2010 at 00:50

    Expected behaviour from Darth though

Fair enough. I don't like to be judgmental. I've never watched him before.

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 00:50

    1. Is there an archive of these daily chat streams?

    Yup

Pick your Daily or use the search function

    2. Has Bernie ever visited this, or come sniffing around for ideas?

    Probably, not publicly though

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 00:50

Zero surprise. Wonder what Ross would say to Nico if he came to complain... He's been throught this before.

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 00:50

    1. Is there an archive of these daily chat streams?

Everything that has ever been said here is still on th site.

    2. No

Fair enough. I don't like to be judgmental. I've never watched him before.

The same thing happened with Johnny Herbert at Benetton the first time he went faster. It was decided that he shouldn't see Schumacher's data

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 00:52

Zero surprise. Wonder what Ross would say to Nico if he came to complain... He's been throught this before.

I hope Keke decides to become vocal on this

Gotta imagine someone in FOM is trying to think this big

    (Thx again Bos)

    You like fireworks, SR?

  • Alison12/03/2010 at 00:53

It's not necessarily best for the team overall though is it....

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 00:53

    Same

    [and Jacques]

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 00:54

Nope, but Schuey doesn't think about that [nor care]

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 00:54

I think theres as much chance it was Nico not letting as it is Michael.

Absolutely no way. Ross Brawn would never allow that. Drivers don't get to decide how a team operates unless they are special

  • Alison12/03/2010 at 00:54

Nope, but Schuey doesn't think about that [nor care]

    Ross does though....

    You like fireworks, SR?

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 00:55

    Ross does though....

If Schuey delivers, on the other hand, he might not care

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 00:55

Kinda feel for Nico... A lot of people think this was his make-or-break year anyway.

  • Jon Waldock12/03/2010 at 00:55

If Schuey delivers, on the other hand, he might not care

He'll want nothing less than he got this year. Both championships, if they aren't sharing then they'll only win one.

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 00:55

It's not necessarily best for the team overall though is it....

They have Heidfeld in the background and he has no delusion of being world chmpion

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 00:56

And he's up against "Darth" :)

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 00:56

Kinda feel for Nico... A lot of people think this was his make-or-break year anyway.

I like him, but he has this opportunity to prove his worth or fade into the background

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 00:56

    Ross does though....

He never has before. He has only ever been interested in helping Schumacher

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 00:56

He'll want nothing less than he got this year. Both championships, if they aren't sharing then they'll only win one.

Can't see them getting either to be honest

  • Jon Waldock12/03/2010 at 00:57

He never has before. He has only ever been interested in helping Schumacher

that was quite a few years ago, why does no-one think that something could ahve changed?

  • Jon Waldock12/03/2010 at 00:57

Can't see them getting either to be honest

oh of course, i cant either, but it wont stop him wanting both

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 00:57

He never has before. He has only ever been interested in helping Schumacher

Jean Todt was a bit instrumental in that too

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 00:57

He'll want nothing less than he got this year. Both championships, if they aren't sharing then they'll only win one.

They are not going to get either. Their car is not good enough.

They won two championships a few times while the second driver was hamstrung. It's how they operate

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 00:58

that was quite a few years ago, why does no-one think that something could ahve changed?

    Spots and Leopards

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 00:58

(Offtopic-- The software for this site is FABULOUS. I wanted to review a link Bos had provided earlier in the evening, but had forgotten the cross over midnight over there. SO I go to the March 11 page and everything's there. Neatly archived. In less than an hour, presumably automatically. Brilliant!

  • Alison12/03/2010 at 00:58

Ooooh maybe I could make a fantasy racers team. I've not played before. How many people can you have?

Yeah I've tried to get someone to explain to me before why Braun's reputation isn't more tarnished by his Ferrari years.... It makes zero sense to me. People hardly mention it unless they're saying "strategy genius"

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 01:00

FOM should just cut Mr & Mrs C a check and call it home

The NFL shouild do this, too (American bonebreak football)

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 01:00

It makes zero sense to me. People hardly mention it unless they're saying "strategy genius"

It's enough, he also seems to get the most out of his team

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 01:00

that was quite a few years ago, why does no-one think that something could ahve changed?

They have been operating like that since Benetton and just because they have been separated for a couple of years they believe that the methods that created the most successful spell any driver ever had are wrong now?

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 01:00

The NFL shouild do this, too (American bonebreak football)

We live commented the Superbowl, many IRL races and some NASCAR

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 01:01

Jean Todt was a bit instrumental in that too

They were operating that way before Ferrari. Todt jjust moved them in and let them get on with it

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 01:01

    Alison, say more about that...

Does this have anything do to with Ruben's outbursts last year?

  • Pat W12/03/2010 at 01:01

He never has before. He has only ever been interested in helping Schumacher

Probably, he got burnt in the past

  • Amy12/03/2010 at 01:02

app would not let me log in so i used "try" instead which lets you get one weekend without registering. It looks good! Id say the paid iphone app gives you a lot more data though.

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 01:03

Id say the paid iphone app gives you a lot more data though.

Live visual GPS positions for every session plus split times, gaps, etc

    And timing replays

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 01:03

Ooooh maybe I could make a fantasy racers team. I've not played before. How many people can you have?

Can't remember but it is in the rules. Set a team up now and then you can change it later but this way you won't end up with no drivers

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 01:03

'09 was a blip. Before his sabbatical he was an evil genius - people have forgotten this now.

Yeah they've forgotten pretty quickly! Makes you think Piquet could have been forgiven now Flav is out the way (if only he wasn't so darned slow and spinny...)

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 01:04

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 01:04

HOw evil? Why did Rubens put up with it?

Watching those old races on Justin is embarrassing

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 01:05

Why did Rubens put up with it?

He got to drive for Ferrari

  • Pat W12/03/2010 at 01:05

Yeah they've forgotten pretty quickly! Makes you think Piquet could have been forgiven now Flav is out the way (if only he wasn't so darned slow and spinny...)

I don't think you can forgive a driver who willingly crashes, even if he was under a lot of mental pressure

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 01:05

    So did Luca.

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 01:05

Sorry, couldn't resist. Rubens just looks like a poodle in those old races..

Quite a few time last season I made this point to Lou when she was saying how great he was and what a great team etc. That was just opportunism but now he will be back to his normal mode

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 01:07

I have this fantasy where Nelsinho's making a connecting flight through the region and he gets arrested at the singapore airport

  • Amy12/03/2010 at 01:07

speaking of rubens i am glad he is up first on the autograph stage, if i am there when gates open i should be able to park myself right at the front and get good photos all day.

  • Jon Waldock12/03/2010 at 01:07

    Why does he get arrested?

  • Pat W12/03/2010 at 01:07

Why did Rubens put up with it?

He got to drive for Ferrari

Exactly. I do think it helped his driving, but he had to play no.2.

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 01:08

HOw evil? Why did Rubens put up with it?

He was threatened with being fired.

What people remember is Austria 2002 but they forget Austria the previous season. In 2001 Rubens was running second when he got the call to give up the position. After the press had a go after the race Ferrari said they would never ask him to give up a win. Then the next season they did exactly that.

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 01:08

    Why does he get arrested?

    Crimes against crash barriers?

  • Pat W12/03/2010 at 01:08

Errrr how am I supposed to decide on a team name by myself?? Please help me!

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 01:08

    Why does he get arrested?

FOr making race fans in LA so angry. And putting Singporean race fans at reckless risk

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 01:10

Just over a pound a race

erm Alison's racers. Or something really difficult to say so that Mr C has a problem on the podcast.

Which driver's have you chosen to see if that inspires a name

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 01:10

    Good call. Alphonso's destiny

the iphone one looks lovely but i would need to spend $800 to get it so i will quick with free and less data. Remind me to get lots of credit for roaming with in europe. 1-2mb per session at 10c per kb in roaming fees = ouch

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 01:12

What does that have to do with the availability of the F1 app on other systems?

Depends what the market is like for Android, Web OS & Windows 7 apps

Might be cheaper to get your phone unlocked and buy a local SIM

  • Amy12/03/2010 at 01:13

10c per kb isnt right. I cant remember what it is. Ah well, my point still stands

Mm I need to call Orange in case I spend a lot when I'm away soon. My data charges are horrendous at the minute.

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 01:14

UK roaming charges [for Europe] £6 per MB!!

I bought a 10MB bundle to be safe

  • Amy12/03/2010 at 01:15

i did ponder that, my phone is already unlocked too. Cant be bothered with having a new number though #lazy . Also, mclaren need to reach me on this number for my pit tours ;)

Errr Amy you don't have to use the number for anything except roaming!

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 01:15

I bought a 10MB bundle to be safe

At a much better rate, I must add

  • Amy12/03/2010 at 01:16

  • Amy12/03/2010 at 01:17

i got a local sim in singapore though and told everyone the number for while i was away but people were still constantly texting my usual number. So not only am i lazy, my friends and family are dumb :D

I have one or five lieing around the place

  • Amy12/03/2010 at 01:19

the small print looks pretty good, credit can be used for everything both here and overseas. The flexible credit is the only reason i stay on prepay. If i went on a contract i could get a free iphone but i couldnt use the phone in the way i want :D

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 01:20

I'm still doing it! I spent about 10 minutes trying to work out what page P would be on in the league list....

  • Amy12/03/2010 at 01:21

cheers mr clapper i shall let you know which method i choose. Is it just me or is spa really soon? I can count the months on one hand! #windingupalison

  • Pat W12/03/2010 at 01:21

O2 also let me put a cap on the data I use whilst away

Looks like Orange 3G is changing to 60p/day unlimited (fair use), or I can have £1.50/day capped, or £5/mth for 250MB, £7.50/mth for 500MB, £10 unlimited. But £3/MB abroad!

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 01:22

Yes I have done that's what I was looking for! :P

I can't decide whether I'd like to have Jenson with enough money for Rubens or if I should stick with Lewis and a rubbishy driver. Damn that 0.5 million difference....

  • Pat W12/03/2010 at 01:23

    International calling cards

I used to call the UK from Sydney for 2¢ per minute

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 01:26

    I see Go Alphonso Go.

Surprised by your choice of flag. I expected a saltire

  • Alison12/03/2010 at 01:26

Nooo but skype is useful for calling phones as well. I ring Nick's mobile from my mobile a lot. With the gracious intervention of skype it only costs me about 8p a minute.

  • Alison12/03/2010 at 01:26

Surprised by your choice of flag. I expected a saltire

I didn't actively choose a flag at any point?

    Brundle pit walk in Monaco

  • Amy12/03/2010 at 01:28

thats still costing extra though. Cv the moment i pay $29 a month and can text or call anyone anywhere and use as much mobile internet as i can and not run out of credit. If i went on the equivalent $29 monthly contract all of my international options cost me more, even if it is a tiny amount.

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 01:28

You can change it by selecting player profile from the left hand pull down menu

  • Pat W12/03/2010 at 01:28

10c per kb isnt right. I cant remember what it is. Ah well, my point still stands

UK roaming charges [for Europe] £6 per MB!!

I bought a 10MB bundle to be safe

Found the page for travel bundles.

    £5 for 3MB or £12 for 10MB.

  • Alison12/03/2010 at 01:29

You can change it by selecting player profile from the left hand pull down menu

Okay I'll have a poke around. I don't think I chose a nationality. Maybe it gave me a default one.

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 01:29

Found the page for travel bundles.

    £5 for 3MB or £12 for 10MB.

    That's good, I paid £20 for 10MB

  • Alison12/03/2010 at 01:30

Grrrr I really want Rubens. He's definitely the best of the cheaper drivers. I could make it work if I lost my beloved Sebastian :(

  • Pat W12/03/2010 at 01:30

Yes I think so. I was going to have him and Alonso and Hamilton and then I need someone else cheap.

I will have Kobayashi or one of the force india people. I find it hard to choose!

I assume you have gone for the no changes option then? I thought about that but I am still not sure enough of who has a good car and who's is not as good as testing suggested. I can see someone making no changes winning though

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 01:38

    I got Liuzzi

So have I. Although I may change

Yes. I just know I'll forget to change it if I don't.... I might lose interest too. I'd like to just leave it alone.... I fixed my name and my flag though! Super proud!

Your team looks so much better with that flag

  • Alison12/03/2010 at 01:43

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 01:44

    I keep forgetting the stats

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 01:45

Last year there was one race where a load of people had Schumacher and Massa even though neither of them were racing

Webber has been chose 30 times more that Trulli. Incredible

  • Alison12/03/2010 at 01:48

Sebastian has been chosen by 3.5 times more people than Mark. I mean I love Sebastian, but I don't think he's that much better....

Sebastian has been chosen by 3.5 times more people than Mark. I mean I love Sebastian, but I don't think he's that much better....

  • Alison12/03/2010 at 01:49

But he'll score more points, people are hedging their bets and going for the best driver in each team

Well yes. My Seb is going to win big! I want Alonso to win the championship this year though :D

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 01:50

Sebastian has been chosen by 3.5 times more people than Mark. I mean I love Sebastian, but I don't think he's that much better....

He was worth you not having the magic half million. You could swap him for Webber

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 01:51

But he'll score more points, people are hedging their bets and going for the best driver in each team

I think McLaren will disappear into the distance so I have both their drivers and because I want the option to change if that is not the case I have Hulkenberg who will be the big story of the early part of the season and Liuzzi

  • Alison12/03/2010 at 01:52

He was worth you not having the magic half million. You could swap him for Webber

    Nooooooo!! I hate Webber.

Am I right in saying you get points for laps completed? So Sutil would be a daft choice?

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 01:52

... if that is not the case I have Hulkenberg who will be the big story of the early part of the season and Liuzzi

I have The Hulk in my work FR team

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 01:53

Am I right in saying you get points for laps completed? So Sutil would be a daft choice?

You get points for laps completed so at some of the short tracks with lots of laps it is better to have lots of drivers than a few good drivers

  • Alison12/03/2010 at 01:53

    Nooooooo!! I hate Webber.

I don't think my team is going to be great tbh. It's more of a popularity contest than an actual prediction.

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 01:54

I have The Hulk in my work FR team

He is going to be an overnight sensation and Rubens is not going to be number one at Williams for long.

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 01:54

I don't think my team is going to be great tbh. It's more of a popularity contest than an actual prediction.

You have some good drivers there and if the top cars turn out to be pretty even you should score well

I think they have car problems going by some of their statements and I would not be surprised to see Williams ahead of them in the first few races

  • Alison12/03/2010 at 02:01

    Why don't you like Nico?

I just don't.... Erm maybe it's because I think he's a bit rubbish but full of himself. Doesn't stop me feeling sorry for him in his current situation though.

I think he was really good in GP2, then went to Williams and made a mistake by staying there, sometimes being loyal to a team pays off (if your name is Jenson) but rarely.

His childlke appearance makes him seem even MORE pathetic next to the man Bossano calls Darth :) And that Darth is SO MEAN... He won't share data! It's like he wants to WIN or something

The film is definitely not made for children. I think it's made for people who read the book when they were children and have grown up. A child wouldn't understand it.

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 02:06

  • Jim Newman12/03/2010 at 02:16

I've always thought Senna/Prost would make an excellent movie, but they're focusing on up until 1982

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 02:16

The thing I read said they are doing 1968 to 1982 beteen the Clark and VIlleneuve accidents. I really don't see the point on doing a movie like this or how you can cover 15 seasons in 2 hours

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 02:19

    Historical footage or fictional drama?

Agree with Bassano... Wait for it to show up on TV

What was the theme of those 15 years? 'Safer at the end than the beginning'?

The last F1 project ended being a Stallone movie

    Nuff said

    Very good point.

Speaking of Clark, I made it a point to visit his shrine on the backside path of Hockenheim and gave him a moment of silence.

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 02:20

HOw could a movie like that NOT be a disappointment to fans?

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 02:21

It would have to be a lost plot from shakespeare to make race people ignore the errors of details

  • Jim Newman12/03/2010 at 02:21

HOw could a movie like that NOT be a disappointment to fans?

I agree. They're also making a movie of the Dark Tower novels and I'm sure they'll mess that up too.

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 02:22

The first movies from CLancy novels were OK, because those plots were two-dimensional anyway

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 02:23

Oh man, these monsters are wicked!

The best book to movie I've seen was the old Andromeda Strain movie. Quite true to the book.

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 02:24

I've never even heard of a race car novel ('cepting Saward's nonfiction tales)

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 02:24

What was the theme of those 15 years? 'Safer at the end than the beginning'?

Nothing obvious that I can see other than the fact you start off with cars with no wings and end up with full ground effect and turbos but I can't see a movie about technology

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 02:24

That was a neat movie, wasn't it? Same year as LeMans, a good time to be twelve years old!

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 02:25

Speaking of Clark, I made it a point to visit his shrine on the backside path of Hockenheim and gave him a moment of silence.

I want to go there. Apparently there is a new one going up.

Senna/Prost is a great book. Jackie Stewarts book, Winning is not Enough is awesome too.

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 02:26

A good inside story of Bernie's takeover of the sport would be fun to read, but he's not a memoir kind of guy... and he'll never be pushed out, to have time to write

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 02:26

And be of absolutely no interest to non-fans

    Exactly. Movie stars won't help

  • Jim Newman12/03/2010 at 02:27

The shrine there is tiny. There is a little nature walk on the backside of Hockenheim and they have a placard there honoring Clark.

While living in Germany, I drove Hockenheim many times and each time would pay Jim a visit.

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 02:27

Senna/Prost is a great book. Jackie Stewarts book, Winning is not Enough is awesome too.

His first one, early seventies, was good to read. He talked about some neat things, comparing driving to boxing, and talking about how Chapman would say all the wrong things at (frequent) funerals.

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 02:28

I get the feeling we owe Stewart a lot for the contemporary safety. I'm very very glad Mr Kubica is still with us.

I get the feeling we owe Stewart a lot for the contemporary safety. I'm very very glad Mr Kubica is still with us.

That was a horrible wreck. I was there for that and it made me sick to my stomach. I was very happy to hear later on that Robert was still ok.

Dale E's death did quite a bit to help safety in motorsports.

  • Jim Newman12/03/2010 at 02:30

I get the feeling we owe Stewart a lot for the contemporary safety. I'm very very glad Mr Kubica is still with us.

Same thing with Senna. Toward the end of his life he was very concerned about safety in F1.

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 02:32

I was a fan of the sport as a teenager, but then got into rock and roll after Donahue died. Rock stars were more likely to survive no matter how many drugs they did. Everytime there's an accident like Massa's I feel a tinge of shame for loving a blood sport.

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 02:32

That was a horrible wreck. I was there for that and it made me sick to my stomach. I was very happy to hear later on that Robert was still ok.

Stewart had to fight with everyone including drivers to get them to understand that safety should even be considered

  • Jim Newman12/03/2010 at 02:33

I'm glad he won his first race on it's anniversary

Same. I've always liked Robert. Good guy and very rarely does he have a bad thing to say.

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 02:34

Stewart had to fight with everyone including drivers to get them to understand that safety should even be considered

I saw an interview where he said the odds of surviving in his glory years were something like ½ or a third

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 02:35

The great thing about Turn 8 in turkey is that it only humiliates drivers, it doesn't kill them! They can get back on the track and entertain people

  • Jim Newman12/03/2010 at 02:35

I saw an interview where he said the odds of surviving in his glory years were something like ½ or a third

Mario said the same thing. He said that every time he got in the car, he was prepared to die.

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 02:37

Mario said the same thing. He said that every time he got in the car, he was prepared to die.

He talks about a sportscar (Ferrari 512?) win in Sebring as being a proudest moment... And when he climbed in for the last stint, he didn't bother putting his seat belt on.

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 02:37

I saw an interview where he said the odds of surviving in his glory years were something like ½ or a third

I can't remember the stats but he said something about the odds of someone doing 6 seasons being more likely to die than live. He also said something about all the friends of his who died racing and the number is over 50

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 02:38

Hard to be proud. I'm old enough to be Massa's father... And I was thinking in Hungary, am I asking children to die for my amusement?

  • Alison12/03/2010 at 02:40

Hard to be proud. I'm old enough to be Massa's father... And I was thinking in Hungary, am I asking children to die for my amusement?

Massa's not a child though. He's an adult who's chosen to be a racing driver.

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 02:41

And I was thinking in Hungary, am I asking children to die for my amusement?

Anyone who gets in a race car knows the risks. None of them are doing it to entertain the fans

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 02:42

You guys are right, but it's OK with me that it's less of a blood sport than it used to be.

Heck, I'd be cool with fenders in F1 if they protected people.

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 02:43

They don't allow turbos any more, helmets are required... The formula evolves

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 02:44

  • Jim Newman12/03/2010 at 02:44

Very true. If they were in it for the fans, you'd never seen Michael take out Damon or Senna/Prost taking each other out.

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 02:44

I LOVE the soundtrack! Completely makes the film.

    Yeah, sounds nice so far

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 02:44

Heck, I'd be cool with fenders in F1 if they protected people.

I have suggested on a few forums that they should put something in front of and behind the wheels to stop them interlocking and launching other cars. Every time I ever suggested it I got slaughtered

  • Cridland (Los Angeles)12/03/2010 at 02:45

Very true. If they were in it for the fans, you'd never seen Michael take out Damon or Senna/Prost taking each other out.

It just seems like the most successful talents in the sport will always have that arrogance. They are willing to challenge obvious physical laws, as well as the secret ones that the rest of us don't know about

  • Jim Newman12/03/2010 at 02:49

Jim, what did you think of those moments?

Hard to say... I am disgusted but I understand it, if that makes any sense.

    Question.

Tyres are locked in Q3 for the race, but what happens if Q3 is wet and the race dry, or the other way around?

  • Alianora La Canta12/03/2010 at 09:40

I don't think Force India were quite expecting that P1 from Sutil - how else can you explain why @clubforce decided the timing screen absolutely had to be photographed and displayed to us (when presumably we can see how they did using our usual information sources?)

  • Alianora La Canta12/03/2010 at 09:41

    Tyres are locked in Q3 for the race, but what happens if Q3 is wet and the race dry, or the other way around? {Comment #362}

Then the tyres are swapped as before and the qualifying tyres can stay in the garage all race for all the FIA cares.

  • Bassano12/03/2010 at 09:41

    Correct: http://www.autosport.com/features/article.php/id/2674 (paywall)

Of course if it's wet, all bets are off. A wet qualifying and/or a wet start means that the rule about using the same tyres does not apply. And more importantly, neither does the rule that says you must use two types of tyres.

  • Christine12/03/2010 at 09:48

Bad for the hormones, I guess

    A good inside story of Bernie's takeover of the sport would be fun to read, but he's not a memoir kind of guy... and he'll never be pushed out, to have time to write {Comment #246}

Bernie's Game by Terry Lovell describes the takeover very well if you can put up with the sometimes-dry writing style. Mr E's cunning shines through brightly and he did contribute a little bit to the book.

    I have no idea how I am going to watch the coverage this year. {Comment #415}

In my case, it's very similar to last year, except that some of the sites I use have changed. I'm currently doing live commenting for here, two fora and Twitter in practise sessions. I also have Autosport, my blog's "quick links panel" and at least one spare tab in the window covering the top 2/3 of the screen.

The other 1/3 is shared between BBC's live streaming and Live Timing... ...in theory.

For qualifying and the race, I'll be watching on the TV downstairs with my folder, book and note paper.

Does it say a lot for the quality of the racing that we are all commenting and taking notes (ie not watching the screen)?

Does it say a lot for the quality of the racing that we are all commenting and taking notes (ie not watching the screen)?

In my case, no. I'm the sort of person who found plenty of time in 1996 to read books during the race coverage (probably the only reason I didn't do it earlier was because in 1993-1995, I was still struggling to understand some of what was going on). I stated note-taking in 2001, initially for posterity and later to make sure I had my facts right when discussing races with people on the internet. Since 1996, there's only been one race where I haven't read a book or magazine in the coverage and since 2001, I've taken notes for every race I've watched.

It is unlikely that I will ever stop note-taking or reading during motorsport coverage because the reading/writing part of my brain demands something to do even when the listening/watching parts are engaged.

  • RubberGoat12/03/2010 at 14:23

Watching the Classic GP's this week, I noted that pretty much all of them are included for race action, but not necessarily because of overtaking. Maybe stuff will happen this year? I mean, with slow cars, lapping traffic is going to be interesting and the strategy calls too...

  • stuartrav12/03/2010 at 14:23

You mean it's not already?! For shame! :P

    2 points;

    1. Crofty and Samos-y seem to be working from the Silverstone toilets this weekend

    2. Senna's car was SUCH a handful. I feel sorry for him.

I am actualy debating getting one, because we have staff flying over from the US most weeks it is pretty easy.

But is it a better option than the ipod touch? i am put off the touch becuse it seems to be mainy music focused, but this one might do more. especialy interested in it as an e-reader

Am i right in thinking it will play all existing iphone aps?

  • Jon Waldock12/03/2010 at 14:47

Just remember to get the Wifi one and not the 3G one.

  • Pat W12/03/2010 at 14:48

Watching the Classic GP's this week, I noted that pretty much all of them are included for race action, but not necessarily because of overtaking. Maybe stuff will happen this year? I mean, with slow cars, lapping traffic is going to be interesting and the strategy calls too...

    It can only help.

  • Nick in Dubai12/03/2010 at 14:49

Just remember to get the Wifi one and not the 3G one.

I was also thinking it might be worth waiting for that version? I think its unlocked?

  • Lukeh12/03/2010 at 14:49

Just filled in my national student survey regarding my course. Ooh that felt really good.

  • Jon Waldock12/03/2010 at 14:49

I was also thinking it might be worth waiting for that version? I think its unlocked?

    oh really?

When they were talking about sending an iPad to NZ Leo mensioned that they'd have to send a Wifi one because the 3G one wouldnt work, but i may be wrong.

Maybe they use different 3g in NewZealand?

I know 3G phones bought in europe dont work on Australian 3G networks as it is a different system

  • Christine12/03/2010 at 16:24

So if Mr and Mrs C aren't having all the Fridays off this year, who will man the FBFB?

We might not do them all yet, or maybe not in as much detail. It's undecided. There's the potential that we might be asking for volunteers at some point.

Having said all that, of course, the FBFB mana itself :)

For anyone that cares, if we were to put the 107% rule on FP2, only Senna (of the people who put in a time) would not be able to run, the 107% time is 2:03.49

For FP1, everyone who set a time would be through, the 107% time is 2:04.74

  • Jon Waldock12/03/2010 at 17:12

It's just been pointed out to me by someone on Twitter that if Senna was to be driving his car in the GP2 Asia qualifying that happened earlier....

    GP2 Asia Qualifying

    1 L. FILIPPI 2:07.087

    2 C. PIC 2:07.178

    3 O. TURVEY 2:07.237

    Bruno's lap

    2:06.968

    So.

    Very.

    Close.

  • jpancoast12/03/2010 at 17:14

    Bruno's lap

At least Senna can (right now) blame the car. Unless Chandhook gets out there tomorrow and runs faster.

  • Lukeh12/03/2010 at 17:29

They specifically said that they would hold open the ability to change drivers until Saturday 0800 GMT and currently they're frozen per the usual Friday deadline.

  • Pat W12/03/2010 at 19:43

hmmmm... we only get politicians and religious folk on our door step

Oddly enough I then had an insurance man come while the Sky woman was here, he was looking for a previous tenant.

I just hope the car is not competitive and Rosberg is faster over the first few races. I think that would result in the neck problem forcing him to retire.

It would be even better if they had the best car and Rosberg was faster.

BBC said superstition. I assume he lokes to be nearer the top teams so he looks like the number one. He was told it couldn't happen because the garages are set up as mirror images so the mechanics on one car are doing things the opposite way round to the other crew

  • Pat W12/03/2010 at 21:15

I guess it depends on how the air feeds into the wheels.

Will the fact the wheels are smaller put more strain on them?

obviously their is more weight from the fuel

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 21:43

Will the fact the wheels are smaller put more strain on them?

It should make the airflow through the wheel for cooling better I would have thought. The extra fuel weight will make the brakes work a lot harder. The limit to braking power is the grip between the tyres and the road so a smaller contact patch means longer braking distances

  • Turkey Machine12/03/2010 at 22:49

Go watch the part where Senna goes out of the garage... eventually... after about 3 attempts to engage the clutch without antistall kicking in!

have we seen this fab pic from scarbs, detailing where the mclaren air flow likely runs?

How'd they make it go up?

    I hadn't

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 23:54

How'd they make it go up?

I think it is piped all the way to a duct on the engine cover.

  • me12/03/2010 at 23:55

    erm...

    #imnotscarbs

  • Steven Roy12/03/2010 at 23:55

I can't imagine it turns at right angles like that. That would really kill the air speed

  • Pat W12/03/2010 at 23:55

How'd they make it go up?

the force of the air at speed I suppose

  • startledbunny12/03/2010 at 23:58

I would have thought so too. It might be piped with less right angles than is shown.

  • Christine12/03/2010 at 23:58

Right, Mr C has started talking about air and wings and stalling and stuff, so it must be time for me to go to bed. Night all.

They'll have to remove it before the season is out probably.

Night. I'm trying to find something interesting to do, or sleep.

  • startledbunny12/03/2010 at 23:59

    night Christine

  • startledbunny13/03/2010 at 00:04

    how come?

Last time I remember McLaren having something banned, was their 3rd pedal braking system in 1998. Even though it's not an external moveable aero device, it performs the same function as one.

It's just a hunch, nothing more. I think it's ingenious btw.

  • Pat W13/03/2010 at 00:07

hmm... apparently I needed to ask permission from the landlord before agreeing to the Sky.. although 'such consent is not to be unreasonably withheld'.

too greedy again :) they are coming around my area with discounts on the web price so I got a good deal..

I agree. Someone will protest it. I can't imagine all this griping about it will just go away, but I thought that about the diffusers.

i dont think its anywhere near as extreme as the diffuser, but they'll always be something like this, every year

McLaren asked the FIA, they said it would be ok, so the team have done nothing wrong so far. But I reckon there will be a clarification, and it will have to be removed.

That's the point of F1 - we are supposed to see engineering and innovation, after all...

I agree completely. Teams in the past gained advantages thanks to innovation. One reason why I enjoy F1.

totally, it would be like saying. Go, be innovative and creative.

    oh no. not that creative

am curious who came up with the idea of homologating the cockpit.

if it was championed by mclaren via fota, i can see why other teams might be a bit angry.

  • Pat W13/03/2010 at 00:18

to a point, but also it would likely be bad news for fota.

Everyone say hi to @samsite007 on twitter, he's my colleague from Trinidad, I've convinced him to join Fantasy Racers (and he must have donated because he has 5 teams) and I got him listening to the Sidepodcasts ;)
