Ah, Monday again, but there's no chance to be miserable this week as it's the return of F1 and that can only be a good thing! Yesterday, Mr C got caught up watching Montoya doing some NASCAR thing, and threatened to watch more during the year. Thank goodness F1 is coming back. Here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • As ever, don't forget to check out Jackie's fabulous Something For the Weekend series. Although it's not technically the weekend anymore, it's always worth browsing through the links on there, as they always select the best stuff over on Viva F1. I should also do a quick shout out for the quiz-formerly-known-as Pitlane Fanatic. It's returning in a new VivaF1 shape, so stay tuned to Viva F1.
  • I'm offering up a quick shout out on behalf of Mr C to Vanquish's blog. There are some fabulous stories on there, with the last one being all about Sir Stirling Moss. The entries are quite long, so you need to grab a cup of tea and a biscuit, settle down and get reading.
  • On a self-promoting tangent, I posted an unusual item on Media Future Change yesterday. Mr C and I had been having a conversation, but he was too busy to turn it into a blog post so instead I recorded his words and turned them into a transcript. At some point he will be appearing on the podcast with me, but for now, it's a great way to be a fly on the wall as we discuss media future changey type things. I like the way it's turned out, let me know what you think!

That should do it for now. With the weekend over, it's time to focus fully on the countdown to Free Practice on Friday. Let me know how you're passing the time, and I will see you in the comments.

I don't really know why I've turned the computer on. I'm in one of those moods where people make inane comments and you scream at them.....

I might just break out into a random swearing fit in a minute. I apologise in advance.....

  • Alison08/03/2010 at 00:51

    Oh??

I wouldn't worry, I'm just tired and busy and grumpy. I'm sure I'm annoyed over a bunch of hot air.....

My boss faxed me a very rude letter declining me some leave I had requested as well which didn't help particularly.

  • Leigh O'Gorman08/03/2010 at 00:51

    Ah!!

    What is it with Fax!

    FAX!?!?!

    Stupid Fax

  • Alison08/03/2010 at 00:53

    By fax?

Oh yeah, we love the fax.... There's a lot of form faxing goes on. She'd faxed back my form with a less than polite note on it.

You can email stuff. Quite a few of our invoices come in by email now - but they still need printing as we need a hard copy. Apparently this 'save us money' according to the suppliers. The advantange is that you can choose what to print and what not ot print, rather than having the lot arrive.

Yep! What they really mean is it saves them money. I hate marketing.

  • Pat W08/03/2010 at 01:00

    Accounts depts

  • Alison08/03/2010 at 01:01

    who prints?

You obviously don't work for a big company.... EVERYTHING that comes within a 5 mile radius of my office needs to be on paper, in triplicate....

  • me08/03/2010 at 01:01

    Accounts depts

    aah. for much longer?

  • Bassano08/03/2010 at 01:01

Our industry has to archive records until 5 years after an aircraft ceases flying, even after we no longer own it

We are trialling Electronic Aircraft Technical Logs soon though

  • Alison08/03/2010 at 01:01

How am I going to fax it if I haven't printed it out ;)

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 01:01

How charming. Doesn't he know if you threaten to quit he has to offer you an even better job?

My company is quite old fashioned anyway, but yeah, I'd expect accounting to be the last thing to change, if ever. You can't verify an audit trail if it is all virtual.

  • Alison08/03/2010 at 01:02

How charming. Doesn't he know if you threaten to quit he has to offer you an even better job?

Yeah I did that already though. I think I've used up my promotion tokens....

  • Alison08/03/2010 at 01:04

Also Nick has mentioned he was thinking about coming over but the dates he gave me are slap bang in the middle of the Easter holiday.... I'm kinda scared to even bring it up now although maybe now she rejected one form, it's okay to kick up more of a fuss if she declines another one.....

  • Pat W08/03/2010 at 01:05

Ah. Different thing. You need to be able to trace something from order to payment. The order has to be signed. The delivery note has to be signed. All clipped to an invoice. Then a record of payment attached to it.

  • Bassano08/03/2010 at 01:05

You are entitled to your leave so if she rejects one date you have to have it at another time so no reason not to keep banging in requests

  • Bassano08/03/2010 at 01:07

Well I would but you can imagine what he'd say if I asked for some actual specific dates..... :P

Yeah, God forbid if you need to be specific

  • Pat W08/03/2010 at 01:07

it's a miracle anything ever gets done :)

I'm forever waiting on things and chasing things. It has taken an age to get this far. It being a farm, people were all too happy to just buy something and not tell anyone. Then they'd expect us to know what to do with the invoice that appeared by surprise. And then they wondered why their budgets bore no relation to the actuals :)

  • Alison08/03/2010 at 01:08

Yeah, God forbid if you need to be specific

    :D

We perhaps had a minor disagreement about that earlier.... That may have been when my foul mood started come to think about it.

  • Alison08/03/2010 at 01:11

You are entitled to your leave so if she rejects one date you have to have it at another time so no reason not to keep banging in requests

Yeah she's a bit of a witch. Maybe she's hoping I'll just forget about it or something....

Another narrowly averted disaster by Bernie and F1. But it just goes to show that if you can talk the talk, most people will believe it, for a while at least...ie. USF1.

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 01:50

Dave Richards for 2011 sounds more likely now

    I hope so

  • Lorenzo08/03/2010 at 01:53

Dave Richards for 2011 sounds more likely now

At least he would run a credible F1 team. But then again, we all thought TWR would do the same...and Walkinshaw is now hanging around the V8 Supercar series in Oz like a bad smell. Maybe it's unfair to compare the two.

  • Alison08/03/2010 at 01:53

It's better than the alternative. Life will get better

    I don't believe you!

Morning all. I sure do love public holidays.

  • Alison08/03/2010 at 01:59

    Somewhat wise, possibly

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 02:00

Not at all. Just lived longer and been through the ringer a few more times

    apparently its labour day.

:D just to be annoying Australia has it on a different day in every state, it makes work annoying when you're trying to ring another state about something and no one is there.

  • Bassano08/03/2010 at 02:04

:D just to be annoying Australia has it on a different day in every state, it makes work annoying when you're trying to ring another state about something and no one is there.

Apparently, depending on which state you're in, today is:

    Adelaide Cup

    Canberra Day

    Eight Hours Day

    or

    Labour Day

  • Lorenzo08/03/2010 at 02:04

Or even more annoying is Queensland's non-daylight-savings thing. Throws people every year.

  • Bassano08/03/2010 at 02:05

    Labour Day

Though WA had that last Monday

    Odd country

  • Bassano08/03/2010 at 02:07

I travelled Oz for about 6 months

    I know a little bit ;)

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 02:08

It won't get better instantly but it will get better. When things are bad you have to use that to motivate you to improve them. Have you shortlisted any courses yet?

  • Bassano08/03/2010 at 02:08

Morning, folks. Anyone here watching the Oscars?

Was thiking about it but will be going to bed soon

    NO!

I'm sitting here in an angry heap!!!!

  • Lorenzo08/03/2010 at 02:08

I travelled Oz for about 6 months

    I know a little bit ;)

    Awesome.

I have had KTV in Melbourne twice, and in Singapore last year. What you wanna know?

  • Journeyer08/03/2010 at 02:09

Amy, have you ever tried Kangaroo TV at any of the races?

I'm not Amy, but I've used it in both GPs I've been to. It's a very helpful piece of kit for two reasons.

    1. Croftie and Ant

    2. Awesome onboards not available on the world feed

But really, #1 should be more than enough, especially when the PA goes local dialect on you. ;)

  • Amy08/03/2010 at 02:09

Morning, folks. Anyone here watching the Oscars?

My flatmate has them on here but I'm not paying attention

  • Bassano08/03/2010 at 02:09

I have had KTV in Melbourne twice, and in Singapore last year. What you wanna know?

Worth the money, decent sound & picture quality?

  • Amy08/03/2010 at 02:09

Amy, have you ever tried Kangaroo TV at any of the races?

no, I'm way too cheap for that. They didn't even have them in Australia last year.

  • Journeyer08/03/2010 at 02:10

Was thiking about it but will be going to bed soon

    Any winners of note yet?

Christoph Waltz wins best supporting actor and Up wins best animated film.

That's it so far. We're just 40 mins. in.

  • Journeyer08/03/2010 at 02:10

Worth the money, decent sound & picture quality?

    Yes, YES, and Yes.

  • Lorenzo08/03/2010 at 02:10

Worth the money, decent sound & picture quality?

Most definitely. Worth the money for the live timing and sector times. The picture is brilliant, even in the sun, but works better with shade of some sort. Sound quality is great, (2nd version of the unit improved volume). Only trouble is you get drop outs like a mobile phone if you are near interference or buildings, like Singapore.

  • Journeyer08/03/2010 at 02:11

I'm sitting here in an angry heap!!!!

Why? Any help we can give?

  • Bassano08/03/2010 at 02:11

Christoph Waltz wins best supporting actor and Up wins best animated film.

Was just about to post that

    He was brillaint in Inglourious...

    Up!! Oooooh!

I could watch that. That might make me cheerful :D

    Yes, YES, and Yes.

    Ok, ta

  • Bassano08/03/2010 at 02:11

    Is amazing

  • Amy08/03/2010 at 02:12

    Yes, YES, and Yes.

The thing that put me off them was at my first race a few people next to me had them and they didn't look up from the screen ONCE to watch any of the race.

  • Alison08/03/2010 at 02:12

    Is amazing

I love it so so much!!! It's the best thing I've ever seen. I've made Nick watch it 3 times :P

  • Jon Waldock08/03/2010 at 02:13

I love it so so much!!! It's the best thing I've ever seen. I've made Nick watch it 3 times :P

were you with him all 3 times?

  • Lorenzo08/03/2010 at 02:13

Actually, I really missed it last year in Oz. Not enough people hired it the first 2 years, so they only allowed "group pre-bookings" of 16 or more units. This year I think they are offering singles, I got an email a while back from them to that effect, but I will believe it when I see it. Gotta get one if you can! All the pit-to-car audio is worth it too.

  • Bassano08/03/2010 at 02:13

    I still prefer Wall*E but it's a close second

  • Alison08/03/2010 at 02:13

    Well obviously!!! It's immense!!!

the Aus GP people confirmed on facebook it would be available this year, I think you can already prebook on the website.

  • Bassano08/03/2010 at 02:14

Pat was considering it, I'll probably make use of the track screen, the F1 Timing App and maybe a radio

I won't be getting one, but I might have to keep an eye on your timing app ;)

  • Alison08/03/2010 at 02:15

I brought the DVD home with me so he's not been sneaking in illicit viewings :P

  • Jon Waldock08/03/2010 at 02:15

    Well obviously!!! It's immense!!!

i did wonder if you'd see it once together and then told him to watch it again, and he'd told you that he had but actually haddnt...

The thing that put me off them was at my first race a few people next to me had them and they didn't look up from the screen ONCE to watch any of the race.

That sucks. I usually only look half the time - I need it more for Croftie than the images. I only look a bit more often when it's pitstop time and the order gets shuffled round a bit. :)

  • Lorenzo08/03/2010 at 02:15

the Aus GP people confirmed on facebook it would be available this year, I think you can already prebook on the website.

Available as single rental? Cos it was available last year, but not as singles. I will check it out. Thanks!

Also available at Silverstone and Spa.

But they're not doing all races this year. Have just submitted a petition to get Shanghai added. :(

  • Alison08/03/2010 at 02:16

i did wonder if you'd see it once together and then told him to watch it again, and he'd told you that he had but actually haddnt...

Noooooo I made him take me to the cinema to see it. There was also some DVD viewing.... He did like it though honest. Although I might not have noticed over the top of my over-enthusiasm.... :P

  • Amy08/03/2010 at 02:16

I would like to hear Croftie but not for that price :( I am happy enough with the circuit commentary #ischeap

  • Alison08/03/2010 at 02:17

I would like to hear Croftie but not for that price :( I am happy enough with the circuit commentary #ischeap

    I guess it's different when it's in English #sortof

  • Jon Waldock08/03/2010 at 02:18

    Epic Fail.

    In a presentation from a lecturer I have;

    - 1877 first timed motorsport event

    From the internet I have

    - All the first races were held in France, a reliability trial between Paris and Rouen in 1893

hmm. so the first timed event was almost 20 years before the first event?...

  • Journeyer08/03/2010 at 02:18

    I guess it's different when it's in English #sortof

I don't understand a word of Bahasa Malaysia or Chinese, Amy. :D

  • Lorenzo08/03/2010 at 02:18

Isn't it Mr Tremayne who does it now?

oh I thought they used the same english speaking commentator at every race. Not sure where I got that idea from!

  • me08/03/2010 at 02:19

Isn't it Mr Tremayne who does it now?

    wha?

  • Bassano08/03/2010 at 02:20

That sucks. I usually only look half the time - I need it more for Croftie than the images. I only look a bit more often when it's pitstop time and the order gets shuffled round a bit. :)

I wonder if you can tune into them with a regular radio

  • Journeyer08/03/2010 at 02:20

    *alison

Nah, I did mean Amy. Because the circuit commentary uses local language as well. That's not an issue in AUS or SG, but it can be an issue elsewhere.

  • Lorenzo08/03/2010 at 02:20

Isn't it Mr Tremayne who does it now?

Not at the circuit in Oz... has been Bob forever. Hearing his voice over the PA during first practice, it like coming home again after a year long trip!!

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 02:20

Isn't it Mr Tremayne who does it now?

    Bob has been replaced??

  • Jon Waldock08/03/2010 at 02:20

Maybe the first timed event wasn't a race

But the first event wasnt either according to what im reading, it was a reliability trial between Paris and Rouen. which is basically a really long hill climb...with more hills

  • Journeyer08/03/2010 at 02:20

oh I thought they used the same english speaking commentator at every race. Not sure where I got that idea from!

It's mixed. They use English, but nowhere near as often. Half the time or less.

  • me08/03/2010 at 02:20

Nah, I did mean Amy. Because the circuit commentary uses local language as well. That's not an issue in AUS or SG, but it can be an issue elsewhere.

In your face Avatar!! I'd really enjoy it if his ex-wife won rather than him. It'd give me huge amounts of satisfaction!

Hurt Locker are the favorites to win, and I think the Avatar people know that too.

That said, I think Avatar should win it because of the way it raised the bar for movie-making and because of its undeniable popular appeal amongst movie-goers.

  • Journeyer08/03/2010 at 02:27

  • me08/03/2010 at 04:42

yeah true. i'm annoyed about schumacher mostly, because it means there's a slim chance the even might sell out this year. that means we can't book the week before :(

i'm pretty certain they'll sell out. if schumi can win before they get to europe, it'll definitely sell out.

  • me08/03/2010 at 04:44

exactly. am really hoping he doesn't make it past race three and a whole bunch of fans have unwanted tickets.

I would assume Eau Rouge would sell out anyway? Even if the whole circuit doesn't sell out surely that part of it would.

I'm quite pleased with it because while than the inspiration for the template is the similar to the one that gamboling has currently there is no code from any other site on there. Completely ground up blogging system.

Obviously at the moment you have to hand write SQL to create a new page so perhaps it isn't quite finished yet though ;)

  • RubberGoat08/03/2010 at 08:56

    Morning,

Hope you had a great weekend. Sorry I haven’t been around much, but here's where I have been:

Friday Night: Stayed at my mate’s house because we were getting up early to go skiing the next day. We played some Wii, some FIFA and managed to make his computer explode when he changed the power supply and forgot to change the voltage from 110v to 220v (he lived in Trinidad before)

Saturday: Got up at 5am to go skiing – got there for 9am, skied until 4pm. I managed to do all the runs (even the hard one) and a few jumps. Was awesome fun. We stayed for a drink outside the back of the van that we borrowed and headed back. Got home for 10pm, ate a kebab, talked to my parents.

Sunday: Slept in until 12, cleaned out the flat as we are only 2 months from moving out now, went to the landfill and signed the rent agreement for the new flat. Blobbed on the couch in the evening and watched Miami Vice (which I have never seen before).

So yeah, it was a nice weekend ;)

  • Lukeh08/03/2010 at 08:56

woohoooo!!! Our lecturer just went through my assignment and his words were 'Looks very splendid'

    World. off. shoulders.

  • Dan Brunell08/03/2010 at 08:57

I've been reading up on something I found last week. It's the story of a NASCAR car that went to race in LeMans in 1976 with the livery sponsorship of the beer and brewery of my hometown. All I can say is SWWEEEETTTT!!!!!

  • RubberGoat08/03/2010 at 08:57

I'm with you Christine - every time I see A1GP or SuperLeague Formula I think "Now that's what a proper single-seater should look like".

The only car that even comes close to passing was the Ferrari this year, but now they went and spoiled it with a bloody shark fin :(

Just finished watching season one last week. The show is off the charts on the unintentional comedy scale now. The outfits, the music, the hair, the fake Ferrari Daytona... love it.

    Some other genius ones...

    - If Jonathan Legard mistakenly starts shouting at a replay as if it were live action, drink two shots.

    - If Franz Tost tells Jaime Alguersuari he’s fired over the team radio, drink three shots.

    - Drink three shots for every Virgin and/or HRT joke that is made by the commentators.

    - If HRT lead a lap, stop drinking immediately and seek medical attention.

    and to finish...

    Premier League Edition

Warning: This rule is only to be followed by those with reliable livers. Alcohol poisoning may otherwise result

    - Drink two shots each time the phrase “for sure” is used.

  • Iaian08/03/2010 at 11:16

I have been out of the F1 (and sidepodcast) loop for a while since the 2009 season ended,. Toured and then moved to Australia during the off-season (with limited internet access now, and still in the process of getting all my stuff here from half-way across the world) and am now gearing up for 2010. However could anyone kindly summarize what on earth happened over the past 4-5 months in the run-up to the start of the 2010 season? Key things I'm baffled by or need filling in on:

    - Why is the Sauber team now formally known as BMW Sauber Ferrari? BMW + Ferrari in the same team name is like an apocalyptic collision of sorts I would never have imagined.

    - What does HRT stand for? And why did it change from Campos Meta1 (Best team name I've ever heard)

    - Why did USF1 fold at the last minute? I was quite looking forward to seeing how they'd do, regardless of how good or bad.

    - Does Kobayashi have a drive? If so, what team? I heard he might before the end of the last season, but I heard Toyota folded, so I've no idea.

    - In addition, since I heard Toyota folded, what has become of FOTA? Are they still around, who's in charge?

    - Is Ross Brawn still with his re-badged team? Not that I'll be paying attention to the them, but the team now seems completely and utterly new and different than the Brawn GP of 2009.

    I think that's about it.

  • Alex Andronov08/03/2010 at 11:22

    - Why is the Sauber team now formally known as BMW Sauber Ferrari? BMW + Ferrari in the same team name is like an apocalyptic collision of sorts I would never have imagined.

BMW are still paying for this season so they haven't been allowed to change the name

    - What does HRT stand for? And why did it change from Campos Meta1 (Best team name I've ever heard)

Campos himself has been bought out. It's Hasta la vista to Campos and hola to Hispania Racing F1 Team

    - Why did USF1 fold at the last minute? I was quite looking forward to seeing how they'd do, regardless of how good or bad.

They lost a lot of sponsors money at the last moment apparently. But it also seems like poor management

    - Does Kobayashi have a drive? If so, what team? I heard he might before the end of the last season, but I heard Toyota folded, so I've no idea.

Yup he's with BMW Sauber Ferrari

    - In addition, since I heard Toyota folded, what has become of FOTA? Are they still around, who's in charge?

Fota is still going... In charge is... Martin Whitmarsh

    - Is Ross Brawn still with his re-badged team? Not that I'll be paying attention to the them, but the team now seems completely and utterly new and different than the Brawn GP of 2009.

Yup he's still there as is Nick Fry

  • Amy08/03/2010 at 11:26

right, I have ordered some new contacts so I will actually be able to see when the racing hits Albert Park, and with that I am going to bed nice and early since I didn't quite cope with those 7.30am starts last week.

I had the joy of checking out Nascar.com earlier to see if there was any news about last night's crash between Carl Edwards and Brad Keselowski at Atlanta, only to be met by comments from "fans" egging Edwards on.

Couldn't believe it!! Who flips someone upside down deliberately and then gets the thumbs up from a portion of the fanbase - crazy...

Not a fan of NASCAR, but my latest attempts to get into it have left a sour taste in my mouth.

To be honest it's not that surprising. NASCAR also has an ineffective discipline structure, so you often see the Good ol'boys sorting it out for themselves on the track...

    Anyone want a free ipad.

Leo had Kevin Rose pick a random twitter account which only had 2 followers. He found a girl in New Zealand and they asked everyone listening to follow her. She now has over 5000 followers and unfortunately ha her e-mail notification switched on so has had 5000 e-mails since TWiT went live. One random follower and her will get a free ipad from Leo. So if you want a chance of a free ipad follow https://twitter.com/lisatickledpink

when was i talking about ted? if it was before friday... then no :)

You were talkinag about ted a week or two ago

  • Jon Waldock08/03/2010 at 15:55

She probably has no idea who Leo is yet. There was a comment on TWiT by someone saying that they hoped shed did not have her e-mail linked to her mobile or it would be going off at a ridiculous rate

    and she'd be broke.

  • me08/03/2010 at 15:55

You were talkinag about ted a week or two ago

oh right. was watching the jamie oliver talk, that was quite interesting.

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 15:57

oh right. was watching the jamie oliver talk, that was quite interesting.

That's the bit I remember. That and I thought it was Ted Kravitz interviewing him

  • me08/03/2010 at 15:58

That's the bit I remember. That and I thought it was Ted Kravitz interviewing him

ted at TED would be awesome.

  • Jon Waldock08/03/2010 at 15:59

ted at TED would be awesome.

I wrote a post called "Why I love TED" and the first comment was

"I thought this was going to be a post about Ted Kravitz? I am very disappointed Jon!"

  • Lukeh08/03/2010 at 15:59

ted at TED would be awesome.

    surprised he didn't moonlight it

"This is Ted, at TED, for the Ten oclock news"

  • Pat W08/03/2010 at 15:59

every day i become more and more impressed with leo sayer's f1 insight:

  • Pat W08/03/2010 at 15:59

She has been on twitter for a week, tweeted twice and now has 6000 followers and is on 130 lists.

enough to put anyone off Twitter for life, surely

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 16:01

enough to put anyone off Twitter for life, surely

She is going to get a free iPad although she probably doesn't know that yet

  • Pat W08/03/2010 at 16:01

    4pm and I've finally caught up. :)

I can't be expected to do work on a Monday. Not after the tiring round of golf I had yesterday.

  • Pat W08/03/2010 at 16:02

enough to put anyone off Twitter for life, surely

She is going to get a free iPad although she probably doesn't know that yet

If she sells it will that be enough to cover the theoretical text bill? You'd think people who come up with these promos would think of things like this

  • Alex Andronov08/03/2010 at 16:03

oh right. was watching the jamie oliver talk, that was quite interesting.

For some reason I thought you said... check out the Microsoft one or something... And I finally got around to it. It was really interesting... even if you didn't suggest it... maybe my brain is going?

The talk was about a thing called Pivot which really did look cool it allows you to, for example, navigate web pages like they are connected data points. In one thing he was able to ingest Wikipedia data so that he could see which area (politics, business, music, etc) Time people of the year are from. So a way of seeing the connections between web pages if you like.

  • Jon Waldock08/03/2010 at 16:04

She is going to get a free iPad although she probably doesn't know that yet

she's been added to lots of lists called "twit"

I hope she dosent take it personally

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 16:06

If she sells it will that be enough to cover the theoretical text bill? You'd think people who come up with these promos would think of things like this

It wasn't exactly pre-planned. Conan O'Brian did something similar on his show and got someone from 3 followers to 15,000 so someone on TWIT said we could beat that. So Leo told Kevin to find someone and to encourage people to follow her Leo decided he would randomly select a follower to get an iPad. Then after realising the implications he decided she should get one as well.

I can see why he is sidepodcast's hero

  • me08/03/2010 at 16:06

For some reason I thought you said... check out the Microsoft one or something... And I finally got around to it. It was really interesting... even if you didn't suggest it... maybe my brain is going?

oh right. no, there's a microsoft maps talk somewhere too. you can view a location and then find someone live streaming.

so in theory, you could find silverstone on google maps during a race and see who's live streaming from various corners and stuff.

So a way of seeing the connections between web pages if you like.

am now wanting to pivot the comments...

  • me08/03/2010 at 16:07

If she searches for her own name, she might be able to figure it out. Seems very unfair, though.

  • Alex Andronov08/03/2010 at 16:08

am now wanting to pivot the comments...

Yeah it looks awesome... One thing that's really neat is you can pivot your own web history and see where you spend most of your time... uh oh ;)

  • Jon Waldock08/03/2010 at 16:09

If she searches for her own name, she might be able to figure it out. Seems very unfair, though.

I wouldn't think to search for my own name. I would have DM'd her first to ask, or atleast warn

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 16:10

If she searches for her own name, she might be able to figure it out. Seems very unfair, though.

Looking at her account, she opened it, tweeted twice and never looked at it again.

  • me08/03/2010 at 16:10

Yeah it looks awesome... One thing that's really neat is you can pivot your own web history and see where you spend most of your time... uh oh ;)

but that won't bring up doohickey, because you probably only go there once a day.

sidepodcast was until recently one of my least viewed sites. because none of the live stuff counts as a 'view'.

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 16:11

I wouldn't think to search for my own name. I would have DM'd her first to ask, or atleast warn

They were trying to follow Conan and eventually someone pointed out that he had sought permission. I guess this is one of the problem o doing things live on the internet

  • Jon Waldock08/03/2010 at 16:11

Looking at her account, she opened it, tweeted twice and never looked at it again.

She opened it in Feb and tweeted yesterday.

  • Christine08/03/2010 at 16:12

Looking at her account, she opened it, tweeted twice and never looked at it again.

I don't blame her. I'm sure Leo's done the right thing and reached out to her though - not just with an iPad.

  • Jon Waldock08/03/2010 at 16:12

She opened it in Feb and tweeted yesterday.

i lie, first tweet in march.

Yeah I have it too. I keep meaning to pin it in chrome because it's never there.

  • Jon Waldock08/03/2010 at 16:14

Did Leo say about this yesterday by the way? Her "I hate technology" tweet was probably in relation to the 6000 emails she's just recieved

  • Pat W08/03/2010 at 16:15

I can see why he is sidepodcast's hero

So Sidepodcast are going to bugger up the Joe giveaway and have to give away two books? :)

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 16:15

She opened it in Feb and tweeted yesterday.

The first tweet was March 1st. I didn't notice the second one was yesterday. The I hate technology tweet was mentioned on the show

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 16:16

I don't blame her. I'm sure Leo's done the right thing and reached out to her though - not just with an iPad.

Leo is a soft touch. If he has cost her money he will make sure she is compensated

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 16:17

So Sidepodcast are going to bugger up the Joe giveaway and have to give away two books? :)

If they are going to follow Leo they need to give Joe a book

  • Christine08/03/2010 at 16:17

Leo is a soft touch. If he has cost her money he will make sure she is compensated

I hope it's more than that though. Leo's goal in life is to make technology unscary for people. He must know this doesn't help.

  • me08/03/2010 at 16:18

If they are going to follow Leo they need to give Joe a book

I am thinking that with the equipment working and the random chance that I'm redoing G might mean that I don't add any more songs to the list for G. Just fill the rest with talking as an experiment.

I'll have to work out something to say

I am always game for a live show. Any time you need someone let me know

    Steven can you call me?

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 19:10

Am thinking he may have to wait for the studio in the shed, just in the interests of domestic harmony.

Best get the show started and have Kat kick him out into the shed. If he suggests it Kat will complain about the time he spends in the shed but if she suggests it then there is no problem

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 19:10

    Steven can you call me?

    Now?

  • Alex Andronov08/03/2010 at 19:10

    Now?

    yes now...

  • RG08/03/2010 at 19:10

I am always game for a live show. Any time you need someone let me know

I read that as 'I am always live for a game show'.

Now thats an idea, have a competition where the answers all begin with that weeks letter.

  • Alex Andronov08/03/2010 at 19:10

    I think I'm live but I don't know if anyone's watching

  • Leigh O'Gorman08/03/2010 at 19:11

  • RG08/03/2010 at 19:13

    what's the prize?

Err, a prize also related to that weeks letter. Soo, for example, for 'C' - Cuddly Bear.

  • Pat W08/03/2010 at 19:14

  • Lukeh08/03/2010 at 19:15

    Can't hear him.

  • Janna08/03/2010 at 19:15

Alex sorted all the technical problems with Giggles Radio and tried a quick test. Then he wanted to try and have someone skype in so now he has a new technical problem.

Having just thought of something... It may... just may... have something to do with you being muted in skype... because at the end of the last parade lap when the music was playing I may have had to mute... and... ummm...

  • Alison08/03/2010 at 19:32

Sounds ideal to me.... I hate occasions like that. Distracting people from each individual one by combining them accidentally might just do the trick!

Have just downloaded Skype as I thought I'd try it out. I assume I need some sort of microphone to use it. What's the best thing to get? (please don't laugh at me for being behind the times)

  • Adie08/03/2010 at 19:41

Ok...Can I do a quick straw poll of everyone on here please??!

    What do you prefer...

Just to double check before you fork out for something, my laptop has a microphone built in that is acceptable. You can decide if you like using it before you pay for something. I've no idea what sort of computer you're using.

  • me08/03/2010 at 19:43

You can get a headset with a mic from PC World or similar for less than £20. That frees your hands to use your computer. You can get a phone handset for skype but that either ties up one of your hands or you end up with a pain in the neck. usb headsets are supposed to be the best quality but I use one with two 3.5mm jack plugs and the sound quality is fine.

  • me08/03/2010 at 19:44

skype kills audio quality anyhow, so expensive mics are a bit of a waste i'd say.

I use my in-built and it's fine, but most cheap mics should work fine; however the cheaper (worse) the mic, the more likely you are to get horrible feedback

  • Pat W08/03/2010 at 19:45

That's what I got. Relatively cheap Logitech one. Don't get their own-brand PC-Line ones. Apparently I came over okay on the panel even though I wasn't particularly loud in 'real life', so it must be good :)

Thinking of rolling F1TP and F1WE up into one site for ease. Thinking the F1WE may take over from the blog per se.

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 19:52

You have to try to get a headset that looks comfortable as you will end up wearing it for longer than you think. A couple of examples of what is available

I like it. I had the same thought when I was reading WE the other day, but I didn't know how to say it without making it sound like TP is bad, 'cos it isn't. :)

Names are the hardest thing, sometimes. I like Weekender.

  • me08/03/2010 at 19:55

    i this true?

@Marissali: I didn't realise that Parc Ferme won't exist in 2010 because of lack of garage space.

  • Janna08/03/2010 at 19:55

You have to try to get a headset that looks comfortable as you will end up wearing it for longer than you think.

The Phillips ones I think are the type I'll go for. I used to work on a customer service desk & they look like the headset I used to wear all day

Have you heard sidepodpanels? F1 knowledge is not a requirement. They are just a great laugh and we have had a load of people who felt the same on them and every single one of them enjoyed it. There is even an all female show in the plans for the next series

  • Adie08/03/2010 at 19:56

    Oh. No.

There is line dancing in my hotel bar.

People want me to join in

:) Thanks for the feedback - trust me when I say I'm very thick skinned and I wouldn't have taken it the wrong way!!!!! :) I think it's going to be easier going forward.

I know what you mean regarding names - I've felt a bit silly at times with the F1TP name, it's why I want to get this one right...

@Marissali: I didn't realise that Parc Ferme won't exist in 2010 because of lack of garage space.

No. It may be that instead of being in a locked off area the cars will be in their own garages but parc fermé rules still apply. Cars cannot be altered between quali and the race

No. It may be that instead of being in a locked off area the cars will be in their own garages but parc fermé rules still apply. Cars cannot be altered between quali and the race

    can teams be trusted?

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 19:59

Yes I heard them all & people sounded really good. We'll see...

You do know we'll see really means I would love to volunteer here

  • Pat W08/03/2010 at 19:59

    i this true?

@Marissali: I didn't realise that Parc Ferme won't exist in 2010 because of lack of garage space.

I hadn't heard it before. I was under the impression the rule remained in place, but I guess if there's nowhere to put them..!

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 19:59

There is line dancing in my hotel bar.

People want me to join in

    Do it.

    :D

Live stream it. We have never had anyone live stream line dancing.

  • Adie08/03/2010 at 20:00

    can Michael Schumacher be trusted?

    Fixed it for you.

  • Janna08/03/2010 at 20:00

No. It may be that instead of being in a locked off area the cars will be in their own garages but parc fermé rules still apply. Cars cannot be altered between quali and the race

    From the sporting regs 34.1

Each car will be deemed to be in parc fermé from the time at which it leaves the pit lane for the first time during qualifying practice until the start of the race.

  • Alison08/03/2010 at 20:00

    can teams be trusted?

Even if they lock the doors, I can imagine people hiding in stacks of tyres and sneaking out overnight to get work done and the like :P

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 20:00

    can teams be trusted?

They can be watched and the garages locked when they leave. Can the FIA be trusted with the keys?

  • Pat W08/03/2010 at 20:01

:) Thanks for the feedback - trust me when I say I'm very thick skinned and I wouldn't have taken it the wrong way!!!!! :) I think it's going to be easier going forward.

    Cool :)

I know what you mean regarding names - I've felt a bit silly at times with the F1TP name, it's why I want to get this one right...

Have a think about the direction you want to take it then see what fits.

  • me08/03/2010 at 20:01

  • Leigh O'Gorman08/03/2010 at 20:02

Live stream it. We have never had anyone live stream line dancing.

Probably a good reason for that though......

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 20:02

Even if they lock the doors, I can imagine people hiding in stacks of tyres and sneaking out overnight to get work done and the like :P

I am sure that people would if they could. Imagine being able to set the car up for quali then being able to adjust the set up for the race. That has to be worth a load of time in quali

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 20:02

Probably a good reason for that though......

Alex has never been line dancing would be my guess

  • Janna08/03/2010 at 20:02

    From the sporting regs 34.1

Also 9.2 Each organiser shall supply the information set out in Appendix 1, part A hereto to the FIA no later than 90 days before the Event.

Appendix 1 Part A includes 7. PRECISE LOCATION AT THE CIRCUIT OF :.....- PARC FERMÉ

  • Leigh O'Gorman08/03/2010 at 20:03

Even if they lock the doors, I can imagine people hiding in stacks of tyres and sneaking out overnight to get work done and the like :P

Anyone seen Piquet Jr around lately?

  • Alison08/03/2010 at 20:05

Anyone seen Piquet Jr around lately?

I saw he had a parking ticket?

  • Adie08/03/2010 at 20:06

I am sure that people would if they could. Imagine being able to set the car up for quali then being able to adjust the set up for the race. That has to be worth a load of time in quali

The problem is, with the best will in the world teams will cheat if they think they can get away with it. Don't give them the opportunity then it's fine - but it only takes on person to ruin it for everyone else.

A slight wing / spring / damper tweak here could by 2 tenths of a second per lap. What's to stop someone from doing something so simple - no one would know.

  • Leigh O'Gorman08/03/2010 at 20:06

I saw he had a parking ticket?

In Bahrain?? What's he doing there??

  • Alison08/03/2010 at 20:07

A slight wing / spring / damper tweak here could by 2 tenths of a second per lap. What's to stop someone from doing something so simple - no one would know.

What's to stop them doing that in the morning when they're allowed the cars back though....

  • Adie08/03/2010 at 20:07

I've worked out this dancing lark. 1...2...3...tap. Then 1...2...3 AND tap.

  • Pat W08/03/2010 at 20:07

In Bahrain?? What's he doing there??

    In America wasn't it?

  • Leigh O'Gorman08/03/2010 at 20:09

In Bahrain?? What's he doing there??

    In America wasn't it?

Aaaahh... yes - during the NASCAR Nationwide race when he bumped Danica Patrick off the track

    ;)

  • Janna08/03/2010 at 20:10

A slight wing / spring / damper tweak here could by 2 tenths of a second per lap. What's to stop someone from doing something so simple - no one would know.

    Another bit from the regs

34.6 One scrutineer will be allocated to each car for the purpose of ensuring that no unauthorised work is carried out whilst cars are being held under parc fermé conditions.

This would imply that even if they are in the garage they are under constant scrutiny from the FIA. They are also covered & sealed by the FIA after qualifying

  • Alison08/03/2010 at 20:12

    Ooooooh!! Pointless is back :)

That programme is such a guilty pleasure....

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 20:14

A slight wing / spring / damper tweak here could by 2 tenths of a second per lap. What's to stop someone from doing something so simple - no one would know.

It's probably easier to do that in the huddle before the race than when there is no-one around. I think we will see mechanics making more adjustments during pit stops this year but they are going to have to be quick.

  • Andy Taylor08/03/2010 at 20:15

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 20:49

Sadly not. It is not exactly rocket science. If you don't want something to land on someone's head put a cover over it and the only place I have seen that is drag racing.

    You have to love Lola

"Lots of options have been considered" explains Lola's head of special projects Peter McCool, "but there is always a compromise. A device that reduces the possibility of a foreign object impact usually restricts access, movement, vision or all three. An ejector seat is not really an option

Something is about to land on the driver's head so use an ejector seat? There are cars travelling at 200mph so let's launch one of the drivers out of his car into their path?? Who would even bring an ejector seat into the discussion

Guys... dilemma time. Do I join my wife and travel across country to see my new flat again to measure up (the inlaws are going with her) and miss the qualifying until later or do I stay at home and watch it live?

It's available in a multitude of places online, or if you have a DVR you can catch it then. So I'd go with the former if you like your marriage. :)

    I can't help thinking that:-

The car may be a bit crowded with you there as well...

It's really nice for the other half to have quality time with her parents...

You won't want to bore her with qualy after she's had an exciting day planning the new house...

Basically you are doing them all a great favour by staying at home...

    Don't you think?..

    Or...

    Don't go until after qualy...

It's available in a multitude of places online, or if you have a DVR you can catch it then. So I'd go with the former if you like your marriage. :)

  • RG08/03/2010 at 21:32

Guys... dilemma time. Do I join my wife and travel across country to see my new flat again to measure up (the inlaws are going with her) and miss the qualifying until later or do I stay at home and watch it live?

    Watch quali.

I'm missing the race, or do I feign injury? Hmm.

  • RubberGoat08/03/2010 at 21:35

    Watch quali.

Do we expect qualy to be better than the race?

I don't know what to do with my blog for saturdays other than post a graph with the times on?

  • Alison08/03/2010 at 21:36

Do we expect qualy to be better than the race?

I think it'll be the same as last year.

  • Steven Roy08/03/2010 at 21:38

Do we expect qualy to be better than the race?

Not sure. Qualy will give us a proper clue as to who has pace but the tyre nonsense will probably mess that up

  • RubberGoat08/03/2010 at 21:38

I don't know what to do with my blog for saturdays other than post a graph with the times on?

    Stupid FIA

Might be a blessing in disguise - I have been told I spend too much time on F1 when the weekends are on...

  • Alison08/03/2010 at 21:38

I don't like the idea of the qualy like this. Surely fast cars being at the front is never going to give anyone a chance at racing each other....

  • Lukeh08/03/2010 at 21:39

I'm in a bloggy mood but have nothing of interest to blog about. How frustrating.

I don't like the idea of the qualy like this. Surely fast cars being at the front is never going to give anyone a chance at racing each other....

It's always been like that. The hope is that the change in the cars because of the fuel loads will unsettle some of the cars, make them handle worse and therefore slower...

I would like to look at the amount of corners per kilometre for each circuit and see if there is a relationship between that and the number of overtaking moves in 2009...

    In a presentation from a lecturer I have;

    - 1877 first timed motorsport event

    From the internet I have

    - All the first races were held in France, a reliability trial between Paris and Rouen in 1893

    hmm. so the first timed event was almost 20 years before the first event?... {Comment #156}

More to the point, it was four years before the advent of the first car that wasn't an unreliable adapted carriage or cart, so this "first timed motorsport event" would have been a bit lacking in anything recognisable as a proper motorsports vehicle!

Glad she is enjoying it and is not upset. She now has 9000 followers. She only had 5000 when I posted it here. Their target was to beat Conan's 15,000 in a week

  • Jon Waldock08/03/2010 at 23:11

You wait until she's turned notifications off, then she deletes the messages, then you email her

  • Alianora La Canta08/03/2010 at 23:12

    I would also like to say booo that the F1 football team is playing the day before I arrive in both Spa and Monza, it would have been cool to see them! It makes sense for them to play on a Wednesday though I guess. {Comment #395}

That must be frustrating for you.

Tangentially, I'm a little worried that 48 hours before their first match of the season in Bahrain, Nazionale Piloti haven't noted who their opposing team is on the site. If the implication that they don't know who their opponents are yet is true, it could be a short match...

I guess if you're standing very close to the door and start to move as the door opens, you could just fall in even if you do notice the lift isn't there....

And that's what I find strange. It's an accident waiting to happen, your playing with your life for what? 0.5 extra seconds? It's like looking both sides of a street before crossing, it should be wired into everyone's head...

Sounds like it was custom made, one of the tweets mentioned Willams and some Carbon Fibre

To be honest, if this happened to me at work I'd be set for life.... Is it wrong to wish an accident upon yourself? #sorrygavin

No probs - knock yourself out ;)
