Today it is the birthday of one Mr Sam Bird, sometime test driver for Williams, who is currently racing in the GP2 Asia series. That series confuses me greatly because it is a feature and sprint race, but only at two circuits, just a couple of events, and quite far apart. Still, it keeps the drivers busy over the winter months, I suppose. Meanwhile, here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • Bernie has been busy, as per usual, launching a bid to buy Saab with the major shareholders of Renault, Genii Capital. Goodness knows what he would do with it if they were successful - would they become an F1 team? It all seems a bit too cozy. Anyway, we have a breakout thread on such matters, so head on over and share your thoughts!
  • Meanwhile, US F1 have become the FIA's new best friend after being given special allowances to test over in the US, before joining everyone else in Europe. We put up an F1 Big Picture of the Barber Motorsports Park they have in mind. It looks very... simple.
  • Whilst we're on the subject of F1 Minute, don't forget to keep your eye on the videos as they are released. We know they are behind at the moment, but we're catching up all the time. We'll be blogging about our thoughts and findings very soon, but for now, just sit back and enjoy F1 sixty seconds at a time.

That should do it for now. Let us know what you're up to this weekend, if you are able to do anything due to the weather. Personally, I'm voting for sitting next to a radiator all day long, and while I do that, I'll see you in the comments.

Thankfully, I've always known it as TGI Friday, which gets some funny looks when you shout it on a train, but doesn't mean swearing.

New Daily mentions the USF1 test. Their website has pics.

    Particularly this, this and this.

It seem on par with most circuits in the US, i.e. bit narrow, bit bumpy, tried to squeeze some runoff in. Surprising for a new course..

It seem on par with most circuits in the US, i.e. bit narrow, bit bumpy, tried to squeeze some runoff in. Surprising for a new course..

Actually, I've been by there. I was in Birmingham for a meeting and got board and took a long lunch to check that and Talledega out. (They are along the same highway.)

It is a really nice course. Lot of bare hills where you can have a picnic and watch a race. The run off is pretty tight, but it is a pretty slow tight course. For an American track, it has really good standards.

I wished I took the time to go into the museum. Looks interesting.

  • Chris09/01/2010 at 00:20

Ahh thanks Dan. It is in a good setting and has good elevation changes. From the pics provided it seems it isn't quite F1 spec. Probably similar to what Donington was like before they started work..

That meant I was 13.5 at the time. I remember seeing it on the evening news. I wasn't into F1 at the time but CART, and distinctly remember Michael Andretti talking about driving with Senna the season before.

That's really difficult. I pulled an all-nighter on a uni course. Managed to make it through the night, got into the lecture hall and nearly fell asleep so after the first one was over I bunked the rest of the day and went to bed. Tip: Don't do that.

the only couple of times i've gone over 24 hours are when i've been in a creative 'bubble' and been working on textiles. Mum and dad have gone to sleep, and left me sewing or something and woken up to come downstairs to find me still sewing. I get alot done when i do things like that but after about 27 hours i start to feel very sick and not very well at all, so i just collapse in bed.

Tom do you know what you're doing post-sixth form wise? They have a commercial airline pilot's degree at my uni if thats what field you wanna head.

  • startledbunny09/01/2010 at 01:14

What I've thought for a long time. I'd like to be a Captain for Virgin Atlantic, apparently some of them are being chosen as space pilots for Virgin Galactic!

you go outside for a walk, and end up with an injury. not sure if i like the thought of you going out and flying a plane. ;)

I've flown aircraft since I was 12, and I've had no accidents, and 1 landing of my own! I think I'm ok ;)

Tom do you know what you're doing post-sixth form wise? They have a commercial airline pilot's degree at my uni if thats what field you wanna head.

Thinking of going straight for the RAF, I have to be in basic flying training by 23 and applying at 18 gives me a few more attempts! If not, I'll go to uni and study hard and find another way to fly.

yeah, it seems to be a popular choice. Australia seems to really like to support their own car manufacturing industry. Me, I'd buy what was cheap.

Australia likes to support homegrown everything

    "Australia made, Australia owned"

Not such a bad philosophy, especially for such an isolated country

New Zealand has quite a 'buy NZ made' campaign going but we have no car manufacturing so we have quite the market for second hand japanese imported cars. Australians are always shocked at how cheap cars are in NZ :D

  • Bassano09/01/2010 at 07:20

I swear they don't sell them in any of the supermarkets near me! But like I say, I don't buy biscuits so I never really look to be honest :D

It was the John Major thing that caught my eye

    Tim Tams still rule though

  • Jeremy09/01/2010 at 07:20

he makes biscuits? I thought he just had a line of tech stores :D

His companies make a lot of things. He is not recognized enough. Even though his tim tams aren't as good as arnotts

  • Bassano09/01/2010 at 07:21

I still don't really like Tim Tams. I find them too sweet. All my favourite biscuits are NZ ones and I can't find them here. The NZ shop that takes an hour to get to has them, and they are opening an online store soon. Then the biscuits shall be mine! Next time you're in central London, buy any or all of these http://www.kiwifruitsnzshop.com/acatalog/Kiwifruits_NZ_Shop_Biscuits_32.html :D

I ate a lot when I lived at home because my parents have always had a biscuit tin and always have a biscuit and a cup of tea around 9pm. But since I left home I haven't. I should totally get a biscuit tin.

Amy, why do your parents have a flagpole?

when they got their first house by the sea it came with one and I think dad liked it so when they sold up and built their new house they put one up there too. Plus most of the neighbours have one so it doesn't look out of place. Apparently its just what you do by the sea.

What you need is to cry penne carbonara with beetroot. You roast the beetroot and the whole dish goes red. It's a really lovely dish and so far hasn't failed to convert anyone who's had it.

It's great. Take the un-pickled beetroot, stick it in tin foil, and roast it on a low heat for 20-30 mins. Then open up the tin foil, wait to cool, peel them and then chop the beetroot for consumption. Goes really well with cumin if you have some too.

  • Amy09/01/2010 at 10:35

Very true on both counts :(

I would loooove to go to a Wimbledon final but it really isn't as easy as just logging on to ticketek and buying a seat :D The mens AO final took about a month to sell out and the womans is still on sale.

  • Amy09/01/2010 at 10:36

So who are we cheering for, Henin?

in their original careers I liked them both, but now I like Clijsters more because I thought it was awesome that she won the US Open as soon as she came back from retirement. And she had her daughter on court and aww it was cute. I'd love to see her win the AO as well because she never has before, whereas Henin already has.

  • Bassano09/01/2010 at 10:38

But Justine just made an awesome comeback in that last set

  • Amy09/01/2010 at 10:40

    Australia is empty

I thought all of them loved sports

Australians have this weird habit of waiting until the day of an event and then buying tickets at the gate, the queues at the ticket booths at the F1 always blow my mind. People must be going to the tennis though because they are spending a few hundred million doing up Melbourne Park though because last year they had 700,000 spectators and when the AO moved there originally they only had 250,000. There was really nowhere to sit and watch a big screen like how Wimbledon has that big hill. Apparently there is a new area there this year.

  • Amy09/01/2010 at 10:41

But Justine just made an awesome comeback in that last set

and that is why womans tennis was so boring after they both retired. I wonder if it makes everyone else feel pants that people who havent played for two years are way better than them.

I'd go and sit on Henin Hill with some beers then ;)

my theory with the AO is I could pay $29 for a ground pass and then pay more for my beverages then go sit in 'grand slam oval' and watch the big screen, or I could watch it on the big screen at Fed Square in the city for free and take my own food/drink along :D

  • Amy09/01/2010 at 10:44

its gonna have to wait till the en of the months due to exams but after that am gonna get myself organised and working towards something amazing. Once/ I find anything will of course let you all know. I suppose if you're looking for something amazing or a simple b&b, my guesses are places really close will be booked by now.

NZ has silly laws that put a $20 million maximum on their lottery prize. Australia and its $90 million is the place to be, www.tattersalls.com.au

apparently not having "outrageous" prizes stops problem gambling being such an issue.

theres "I talk to you every day and know what you look like" strangers (most of you)

"I talk to you every day but dont know what you look like or your name" strangers (Mr C)

and "I've never talked to you, I don't even know you exist but you probably know my entire life history if you lurk enough because I post all kinds of junk on here" strangers. Only that last category scare me.

  • Pat W09/01/2010 at 13:19

Hello. Skim-reading the Daily I note more Spa talk.

Despite not having a great deal of money right now it would be good to get something organised for accomodation. WIth Schumacher back (err, probably still will be by then) I expect demand to go up and the 'cheap end of mid-range' options I'm hoping we'll go for will run out so we'll either have to go for somewhere too pricey or somewhere not pricey enough ;-)

Things like method/route of travel can wait 'til June :-)

Being in London you've probably never witnessed the phenomenon that every English tradesman has a London accent, even if they've never been near the place. (obviously the Scottish ones have some sort of Scottish accent but I've never investigated further to know which)

Need to make a plan for the rest of the day or I'll be sat here for ages (as if I haven't been already!). Going off to hunt for a gas bottle for my heater, then lunch, then watch some stuff, either racing for hte blog or just general telly..

    How're ya pipes?

They're ok. You were right about the hose. I have some pipes where the water is freezing inside but not yet enough to crack it. They'd run out of lagging. More coming on monday so I bought some hose (no hoe's, no o's for your house number) so I could pour some hot water down inside to keep it warm until monday.

I like it. Now theres no need to forget any birthdays.

Though if I'm being reaaallly picky, I could say Sir Frank Williams' birthday is also on the 16th

  • Steven Roy09/01/2010 at 16:23

i'm starting to think it was a bad idea trying to upload a video for you all that i took on my camera... my bandwidth is useless.. it's taking ages. #sorry

  • Alex Andronov09/01/2010 at 17:26

So Mr C... I have been given this USB microphone... Now I'm faced with the classic problem of how do I mix this with something else? I was thinking that I was probably stuck because of course I can't plug this into an actual mixer but then i realised that say for example you must for the parade lap be mixing audio sources from your mixer and also from a computer. Do you have a on screen mixer too?

  • Turkey Machine09/01/2010 at 17:31

In case it got buried yesterday, blog was updated! http://turkeymachine.co.uk/genii-and-bernie-shacking-up-with-saab/

you probs need to explain where you're trying to get to. there are quite a number of ways of setting up recording environments.

we use logic audio for mixing live sound sources, this is also used to duck music when people talk. it's kinda expensive though.

Isn't logic the kind of thing that I will grow to hate? c.f. Christine

I want to... say... mix live audio... with pre-recorded audio... and then be able to make something like a web broadcast input think that it is accepting a sound source like a microphone which is actually the combine output of all of that.

    Make sense?

    Wooohoo!

I imagine Lukeh running a pretend Gregs in his living room. Set up all the sausage rolls on a plate on one side of the table sit in front of them bored. The Lukeh runs around the table and says, "excuse me can I have a sausage roll please", runs back, "Yes, certainly sir, in fact sausage rolls are free today here at Gregs because we are so lovely," runs back, "oh that's great thanks, I'll have seven," runs back, "I'm afraid it's limited to one per customer", runs back round table, "oh no problem" runs back, "certainly sir, here's your sausage roll," runs back, "thanks very much" grabs sausage roll, eats, returns to shop side looks bored. Repeat

for that we use the alesis io26. the mics go into that desk, and then so does christine's computer (which plays songs from radiologic) and the eeepc (which is logged into skype). my laptop records all of these sources into logic. finally i send the output of my machine to a windows laptop for live streaming.

it's a bit more complicated than that, but it takes all four machines to do it (and explains the legendary amount of problems we experience.

if you have a second machine, you could plug a lead from the headphone out to the mic input on your mac. that would be a similar setup to ours, minus the desk. but your mic isn't stealing the mic input, so you'd be fine.

Couldn't you do the trick that.... um... somebody did for Sidepodradio... SLVAeron (I'm going to have got that name wrong sorry) and loop around on the same machine? with a wire?

  • Steven Roy09/01/2010 at 18:06

Its just a codename right? So might change at the launch.

Normally they run with the first number they give out. If you look at the early Ferrari cars the numbers were the volume of one cylinder of the engine. What kind of warped brain dreamt that up? I have no idea how they decide how and when to change numbers. John Barnard had a sensible system when he designed their cars. He started with 640 (no idea why) then 641, 642. Logical and sensible. Then he left and the next car was called the F93A. No sense whatever

  • Lukeh09/01/2010 at 18:07

The original. In fact I'm out to dinner with my very good friend Joe who I am softening up to come on the next goforodd podcast. He and I have been friends since 1997. The only time we have seriously had an argument was when he tried to claim the drugstore version was better. Actually this was during the drugstore performance of it at a gig. I am thinking of turning it into a blog post but I'm not sure what conclusions to draw. It changes some positions but only by a point or two. Everyone gains points apart from Mark Webber who drops some (there are more available per weekend).

The best thing about working at Iceland is the fact we had people genuinely last year somehow mis-read the news, and assumed we owed the banks lots and lots of money.

  • lou09/01/2010 at 18:33

we're getting it tonight again apparently. But our backup are daffodils and hope.

    :D hehehee

i know... at least we've got heating + our lovely open fire place, my friend who lives about 1/2 a mile away doesn't have any hot water or anything as their delivery for gas is 2 or 3 days late.

    Poor them :(

    Soundflower

  • RG09/01/2010 at 19:17

    What's it like up there?

Our home ground is shut till the 11th. Not sure about the team we are playing, but thats in Northumberland, and I'm expecting it to be bad. I'm just assuming the manager has just forgot to tell us.

  • me09/01/2010 at 19:17

    Soundflower

ahh. ummm, not a clue no. i would assume you just send the garageband sound out to your headphones.

  • Alex Andronov09/01/2010 at 19:19

are you using soundflower or a lead?

What's happening is both radiologic and garageband are outputing sound to soundflower...

The problem being that I can set radiologic to output sound to soundflower but if I set garageband to take input from soundflower I don't seem to be able to get it to take input from the microphone. Can Garageband only deal with one input at a time perhaps?

So I had to make both output to soundflower and then make the flashuploader point at the soundflower for it's input.

  • Alex Andronov09/01/2010 at 19:20

So I had to make both output to soundflower and then make the flashuploader point at the soundflower for it's input.

But of course the microphone is listening to the standard channel rather than soundflower... And nothing is happening on that until I play back the video.

  • me09/01/2010 at 19:21

Can Garageband only deal with one input at a time perhaps?

nope. about 64 inputs i think.

  • me09/01/2010 at 19:23

What's happening is both radiologic and garageband are outputing sound to soundflower...

garageband shouldn't output to soundflower? gb should output to headphones. i would assume:

    - radiologic points to soundflower

    - soundflower points to garageband

    - mic points to garageband

    - garageband points to your ear

you didn't mention you want to do this live. assumed it was for goforodd. i the ustream just a demo, or do you need to do that as well?

  • Turkey Machine09/01/2010 at 19:24

Absolutely shattered and I'm only a quarter way through moving stuff. Oh dear!

  • Alex Andronov09/01/2010 at 19:26

you didn't mention you want to do this live. assumed it was for goforodd. i the ustream just a demo, or do you need to do that as well?

I used that as a recording thing to be something separate. Ideally I'd like to do it live.

What you describe is exactly what I planned. But when I'm in garageband and I look at input source (on the instrument) I can only see Stereo 1/2 (Soundflower (2ch)) or Stereo 1/2 (Built in Microphone) depending on what I change in the Preferences of garageband for Audio Input.

  • Alex Andronov09/01/2010 at 19:27

I used that as a recording thing to be something separate. Ideally I'd like to do it live.

Sorry I didn't use enough words there. Ideally I'd like to be able to do it live as well. I understand if I have to send it to another computer for that.

  • me09/01/2010 at 19:29

Sorry I didn't use enough words there. Ideally I'd like to be able to do it live as well. I understand if I have to send it to another computer for that.

i don't know if soundflower is capable of separately sending gb output to a browser, at the same time as doing everything else. if it can, you're laughing.

  • Alex Andronov09/01/2010 at 19:29

i don't know if soundflower is capable of separately sending gb output to a browser, at the same time as doing everything else. if it can, you're laughing.

well it's possible... But the main problem is getting Garageband to understand two inputs. I'm sure I'm missing something really simple here to make this work.

  • Alex Andronov09/01/2010 at 19:30

well it's possible... But the main problem is getting Garageband to understand two inputs. I'm sure I'm missing something really simple here to make this work.

ahh right. so you need to put the mic into soundflower first, maybe?

or can it not see usb?

  • me09/01/2010 at 19:32

well it's possible... But the main problem is getting Garageband to understand two inputs. I'm sure I'm missing something really simple here to make this work.

garageband, like logic can only handle a single input source. however you have snow leopard, right?

  • me09/01/2010 at 19:34

garageband, like logic can only handle a single input source. however you have snow leopard, right?

(although that source can have up to 64 channels)

  • Alex Andronov09/01/2010 at 19:35

ahh right. so you need to put the mic into soundflower first, maybe?

Well that's right... But soundflower is basically like an input device or an output device for any application. It can't see anything some application has to send it stuff. So it's not a problem that it's USB it could be a real mic - same problem. I need an application to say, "found x source pass it to soundflower". Radiologic can output to soundflower so no problem. And garageband can see it if it's pointing at soundflower as an input source. But it can't seem to see across the two drivers or inputs or whatever they are.

  • Alex Andronov09/01/2010 at 19:35

garageband, like logic can only handle a single input source. however you have snow leopard, right?

I kinda hope she does come back. I can't put my foot down until she does.

  • me09/01/2010 at 21:44

I see, so I won't actually because it's you, correct?

    well, that's your choice :)

i don't have an FB account.

  • James09/01/2010 at 21:45

i don't have an FB account.

    that we know of ;)

  • Tom G09/01/2010 at 21:45

We're now at the heady height of 6 members, this has got to work now!

  • lou09/01/2010 at 21:46

    I don't think she'll like this :-)

Mrs C knows we all (heart) her, it's just a sign that we like her tweets ;).. all mr c needs to do is open the link in one of her browsers next time she gets up to get a drink or something and she'll find out about the group :)

Ummm, good luck to the USF1 drivers then!

They seem to think it is supposed to do that. I thought there was a sold bit in it to protect the feet, maybe that's in the main body...

  • Andy Taylor09/01/2010 at 21:50

They seem to think it is supposed to do that. I thought there was a sold bit in it to protect the feet, maybe that's in the main body...

Yes. Do you see the driver's feet when they do a nosecone swap?

  • Pat W09/01/2010 at 21:51

Yes. Do you see the driver's feet when they do a nosecone swap?

No but I did expect a little more reinforcement at the back where it connects..

  • Tom G09/01/2010 at 21:52

although i think she gets all the info via some old form of messaging called eeeemail. or something.

Wow, that is old. I don't even pay much attention to mine any more.

    Hello everyone.

One final day before 60 days of hell begins.

Does the USF1 video works for anyone else?

  • Andy Taylor09/01/2010 at 21:58

i write in lowercase. you'd be able to tell.

Not if you use CAPITAL letters from time to time.

  • Pat W09/01/2010 at 21:58

Does the USF1 video works for anyone else?

    Fine here

  • me09/01/2010 at 21:58

i couldn't get the usf1 video to work. so i downloaded it, fixed the file header and uploaded to dropio:

i fear for the team, if their investor owned youtube, and they can't figure out video editing...

  • me09/01/2010 at 21:59

    Fine here

i think the flash version is okay, but the h.264 version is broken.

  • Dan Brunell09/01/2010 at 21:59

Does the USF1 video works for anyone else?

I don't want this to sound bitter, but I can say with certain that I can do a hell of better job with web development, utilizing new media tools, fan outreach, and PR relations then what USF1 is doing right now.

  • Pat W09/01/2010 at 22:00

i think the flash version is okay, but the h.264 version is broken.

No idea. They gave a link, I clicked it, pressed play and it worked :-)

Are you confessing to having journalistic tendancies then (as in, writing for your audience...)?

  • Andy Taylor09/01/2010 at 22:04

No but I did expect a little more reinforcement at the back where it connects..

I'm now wondering where they're going to find enough composite material to build another one.

I am surprised that YouTube hasn't done something so Midweek Motorsport's video series about USF1 doesn't come up when you see the official USF1 videos.

Good point, but he still has a fair amount of stock with Google as part of the buyout.

What I don't understand about Google Calendar is why some items in my list are showing white text / colour background, and some are showing colour text / white background.

  • Christine09/01/2010 at 23:15

What I don't understand about Google Calendar is why some items in my list are showing white text / colour background, and some are showing colour text / white background.

Normally the white background is for those which have a time set against them, whereas the colour ones are all day items.

I made a very funny error in a Japanese exam once. I thought I was asking for a reserved seat... ...and it turned out I was actually requesting an oxygen seat. Needless to say I failed!

  • Alianora La Canta09/01/2010 at 23:40

    That's really difficult. I pulled an all-nighter on a uni course. Managed to make it through the night, got into the lecture hall and nearly fell asleep so after the first one was over I bunked the rest of the day and went to bed. Tip: Don't do that {Comment #153}

I managed an all-nighter once. Unfortunately it was because I was on a ferry and I can't sleep on public transport. Suffice to say I was a bit snappish next morning, especially as some of my fellow travellers were not very nice people...

she needs to go to classes to learn how to use a sewing machine?? we were given a demo when we were in yr 10 and that's it. although i suppose we do use them in textile lessons. We have learnt that you need to learn how to break them to figure out how to fix them.

    I'll just say I was born a few weeks before Senna died {Comment #70}

That makes me feel old. The day Senna died was the first time I watched the start of a Grand Prix. I remember wandering off about an hour after the restart... ...because I'd lost track of where Damon Hill was and got worn out attempting to figure out what Murray Walker was saying based on catching about a fifth of the words (I knew the Senna situation was serious because suddenly I could figure out what half the words he was saying were).

You had more instruction than me then. The sewing machines took about 20 lessons in secondary school and we never attempted to fix any on our own. I basically got just about competent enough to do corners without stitching my fingers onto the cloth (still needed help to thread the machine and take spools on and off).

Those machines are not as easy as they look (at least not to people bad at practical arts like me).

My class learned that one early. Someone tried to talk to me when I was trying to thread the sewing machine (before I worked out I couldn't do it). I distinctly remember being told off for the resulting racket I made (and in case you're wondering, the only injury was mild earache on the part of the unfortunate distracter)...
