Hello there. Here is your useless fact of the day, according to the people's encyclopedia. Today in Sweden and Finland, it is Anna's day - a day that celebrates anyone called Anna. Isn't that a bit mean to people who aren't called Anna? I assume there is a reason but I cannot find out why. A mystery. Anyway, here's some F1 stuff:

  • Mr Buxton has a post on the recent Silverstone deal, which reminds us that although it's all good news for the British GP, there is still a track that has been left as a building site with no immediate prospects. In the comments last night, we were trying to work out who was to blame for this - the Wheatcrofts, Gillett, Ecclestone - the list is endless.
  • Whilst we're on the subject of complete and utter failures, I have given up on Twitter and gone back to using Identica. I know there are only a select few people over there, and I won't be pushing madly for others to join - although come and say hi if you do! - I just wanted to let you all know where I'd gone.
  • I also updated the Daily Post Guest Writer wiki page with space for a brand new week of guest writers. If you fancy having a go, or another attempt if you took part last time, then sign yourself up. It probably won't be until January now, but get in there early to secure your spot.

That'll do it for now. Don't forget, a new advent show goes up every day until Christmas, just a few moments after this daily post appears, so head on over to relive a moment from the 2009 season. I'll see you in the comments.

  • Alison09/12/2009 at 00:21

Ah yes. I do really want to go. I've really not worked out what I'm doing next summer. It depends on whether I'm going back to uni in September or not. If I am, I should be saving up all my pennies really....

  • Chris09/12/2009 at 00:23

If you are you should really enjoy the summer because it means you will be committed to uni for another two or three years depending what you are going to do

Can't stretch to 2 x F1 races in a fortnight... but I was thinking of the LMS at Silverstone which unfortunately clashes with Monza... depends what next season's racing is like I think.

I can see more of Europe when I'm older and [hopefully] richer

I've changed my mind about coming, I was sort of against the other day but now I'd like to, the only sticking point is what to do when it is all over! If Alex or you or one of the others can put up with an extra one...?

There are probably remote parts still like it, 'tis a big place.

  • Pat W09/12/2009 at 00:55

  • Pat W09/12/2009 at 00:57

I'm getting into London at about half 4 if you wanna meet early

How are you getting there, train? Which station? I'll be coming into Waterloo and I can be there that sort of time.

Also Sunday I can mix in a Christmas shopping trip, yes I am aware that this is suicide in London 2 weeks before the event :-)

  • Alison09/12/2009 at 00:57

Yeah absolutely. I don't really see why you'd want to go visit a polished view of a country. I'm not hugely adventurous, but I can't stand a tourists view of somewhere....

  • Alison09/12/2009 at 01:11

    Start with Thailand or Malaysia

I was once partnered with a Malaysian for a clinical placement. They tried to give me and some newborn babies TB. This is the only contact I've had with the country....

  • Pat W09/12/2009 at 01:12

This would get me shot for being non-MFC if other people were around, but I ordered a CD and I can't find it, either it turned up and I lost it, or it never turned up... and after the move and the revision etc, I can't remember which it is. So I am requesting another from the guy's website (he replied himself!)

  • Bassano09/12/2009 at 01:12

  • Pat W09/12/2009 at 01:35

Despite feeling relatively alert I should go to bed. Must attempt to leave a few mins earlier tomorrow because the stoopid country lanes keep having things in the way..

Will try to be more productive tomorrow, blog or otherwise.

My road to work often has whole herds of cows walking down it to get from the paddock to the milking shed. Holds the traffic up for about 20 minutes. It's infuriating.

  • Amy09/12/2009 at 01:41

my tolerance is low because i drink rarely. Doing so on friday though! Twice in a fortnight is practically binge drinking to me

Saw some comedian on TV a couple of days ago. Can't remember who. They were discussing Tiger Woods and he said the people he felt sorry for were Gillette. Gillette picked the three cleanest cut sportsmen to promote their brand. Tiger Woods is now in all sorts of bother. Thierry Henry handled the ball for the goal that got France through to the footbally World Cup finals. So only Roger Federer is left unsullied so far.

Do we know when this party starts on Saturday?

    5-6ish, Not 7-8ish.

  • Alex Andronov09/12/2009 at 06:49

Okay cheers. I'm not the sort to invite myself anywhere really, but I'm gonna need somewhere to sleep...

Pat, if the party tails off before the trains start running we have a spare room which you are very welcome to.

  • Alex Andronov09/12/2009 at 06:50

I'll work out somewhere convenient to meet.

Probably will need to get a train from either London Bridge or Victoria I'd imagine to these parts

I'd say Victoria as that's where Lou will be arriving.

  • Alex Andronov09/12/2009 at 06:52

I doubt Alex would let me in his house tbh so it makes no matter work or not.... :P

Of course I would! You are welcome to come Alison!

    effort.

What else are you doing in the evenings? Can you not write a note on your phone while you commute or something?

If you just spent 10 minutes you could have a rough draft of a post just like that...

  • Amy09/12/2009 at 07:19

I have lots of rough drafts already. I just find 'I did this today' blogs kind of boring and thats what all my entries seem to be.

I think you are lacking inspiration. What do you want to get out of your blog? Comments? Views? That your Mum reads it?

Also, what do you consider is a good post?

  • Amy09/12/2009 at 07:24

I think you are lacking inspiration. What do you want to get out of your blog? Comments? Views? That your Mum reads it?

My mum reads it. She wants to know what I'm up to when I'm away, and when I make big plans. I am not sure that she'd care that I bought a padlock.

Also, what do you consider is a good post?

I don't know :D I am not good at this blogging thing. I only have one because I can be talked into anything :(

She probably just wants to hear what you are up, to be honest. I would love to hear an update from you and I am sure others would, even if it may feel like you are repeating stuff here. Why not write about how you are considering your Great Uncle's grave? Maybe go into a little history about him?

  • Amy09/12/2009 at 07:29

A padlock shows you're taking your security seriously. She'll be able to show it to your dad and say... "look they have padlocks in Europe too now... Amy's going to take one there".

I was trying earlier to work out how long it would take to get here from you. 4 Hours! What time do you finish work?

Yikes. 2 hours to get to London paddington but beyond that, god knows. I finish at 5pm.

we once did it on the 24th. I know they do that in lots of countries but it still didn't feel right.

It is right in Denmark because you celebrate Christmas on the 24th and the 25th ;)

  • Alison09/12/2009 at 11:12

Well, the first time I overate so badly I was forced to sit upright until 4am watching my Father-In-Law's DVD collection - basically old war movies!

It's great fun, if you love eating and drinking with the family!

  • Alex Andronov09/12/2009 at 11:15

Looks like googles realtime search has gone live on the homepage now (search for f1 for example).

I wondered if it was valid for all searches. Doesn't look like it is I typed my name in and nothing was there. But weirdly I did spot that Amazon has taken out advertising on my name! There's a link to buying my book on Amazon right under the search!

  • Alex Andronov09/12/2009 at 11:16

  • Christine09/12/2009 at 11:24

The more I try and stay out of Christmas related conversations, the more I am dragged into them.

Do you know I listened live to Buzz Out Loud last night and was shocked - the page was full of places where it was too easy to click and navigate away from the show page.

The chat window was tiny with no resizing and no options to change font, so following comments was difficult. When I asked how to resize it, I was told to get an IRC client!

Also, the mods are super strict - I got banend for using Caps - all I said was 'SOUND AND VISION' when the feed came on!

All in all, a much worse experience than any live show on SPC :(

  • Jeremy09/12/2009 at 11:48

Zoe and I are discussing spending less time on the computers, and more talking to each other.

The current rule seems to be:

    eyes closed = computers off

    eyes open = computers on

  • Amy09/12/2009 at 11:49

what was the particular issue? Too many people?

There weren't too many people although it did take an age to get through the tills. The real issue was having to select and purchase clothes.

  • Lukeh09/12/2009 at 13:31

I have just been to actual clothes shops. It was horrible. I need a brandy.

  • Amy09/12/2009 at 13:32

My wife is the same - she hates clothes shopping. She's not very #MFC but she does order all her clothes online!

I hate clothes shopping, I always go alone because other people like to do things such as browse. I go in and get what I need. ie, I need a red skirt, I look for a red skirt, if they have none I move on. I don't browse. Shopping sucks.

There weren't too many people although it did take an age to get through the tills. The real issue was having to select and purchase clothes.

What I would suggest is selecting a combination of clothes (for example blue shirts and, say, tan trousers) and then just buying the same thing when the old one runs out.

    I've never looked back :)

due to engineering works on the other line it is the same story, just without the bus!

    Two things:

    1. This is aligned with what Stuart said in his earlier blog post about many people being impressed with Tony Fernandes. Perhaps Notus getting back in may not have been such a bad thing after all. Might even be able to call them Lotus in the future without squirming.

    2. If Notus/Lotus do stick around, perhaps Scott can finally get his shot to get in to F1. ;)

  • Lukeh09/12/2009 at 15:07

Although I didn't sort it out after nope, to answer your question.

What we're doing is like an argos catalogue, and he wants us to have related items in the same category when looking at an item, for example, if looking at a TV in electronics category then related items like DVD player should appear. apparently, according to our lecturer, using a bubble sort is the best way to make it work but we cant work it out al all, SQL searches and allsorts. Tis driving us all a bit loopy.

It's in an access database and we have to use SQL queries, yeah. My use of terminology sucks, I'm sorry. we haven't even been tough SQL so it's trial and error finding what to do.

  • jpancoast09/12/2009 at 15:18

hrrmmm... I'm not experience with access, but if I was doing this with MySQL, I'd have a "related categories" table with 2 columns, first column is the category that the user is looking at, second column is a related category. There could be multiple entries for each category the user is looking at.

I think from there you can build a query (either inner or outer join) that gets all the items in the related categories.

Of course, I haven't had to build a query like this in 4 years, nor do I know if Access can do this.

you could bubble sort that data, but it would be slow.

i've never had to if the data is already in a database, but as an example of something that could be sorted that way would be the "contributor" table at the bottom of doohickey. it used to have a comment count beside each name, and once i planned to sort by the amount of comments rather than alphabetically.

it's client side info, and disconnected so a good candidate. never got around to it before we removed the count though.

you're presumably not going to show all related items, because there could thousands. right? so you'll limit it to maybe five items. in that case... which five?

you need to sort by something. what criteria are you using?

  • jpancoast09/12/2009 at 15:30

Generally, my philosophy is this: If the database does what you need it to do, use it. Chances are the software developers for said database have spent a heck of a lot more time optimizing their sorting algorithm than you ever will.

Generally, my philosophy is this: If the database does what you need it to do, use it. Chances are the software developers for said database have spent a heck of a lot more time optimizing their sorting algorithm than you ever will.

Yeah, but sometimes you just can't get it back to the database fast enough. If it's user side content then it's harder to do. I think the only time I ever end up doing any sort stuff is in javascript because I'm doing something for the user without the round trip.

For example clicking on the top of a table to be able to sort by a column.

  • Lukeh09/12/2009 at 15:33

you're presumably not going to show all related items, because there could thousands. right? so you'll limit it to maybe five items. in that case... which five?

We have a 30 item database, and I have 10 different categories so theres 3 items obviously. what I'm just doing is to have the 2 other items in the same category appear as related items when you're looking at an item, if that makes sense. again, this is all on recommendation on how to approach it from our lecturer.

so the criteria is to make the items appear with the same category I suppose

  • Alex Andronov09/12/2009 at 15:33

you probably need to be working on a bigger dataset, to really understand the problem. with 1,000s of rows of related data, a sort would make sense.

Something like that... The data bubbles up to the top.

  • me09/12/2009 at 15:36

Looks like Access SQL does have order by in it: http://www.adi...ml/sql_for_access.htm

what's the man going to order by? his counts are going to be equal?

  • Lukeh09/12/2009 at 15:36

what's the man going to order by? his counts are going to be equal?

    Well I don't know :)

    Maybe they should be alphabetical?

Or... Can things be in more than 1 category? And you are supposed to be putting them in order of most category matches?

  • me09/12/2009 at 15:39

    Maybe they should be alphabetical?

i guess. i thing with a 30 item dataset i'd type them by hand :)

Sorry... point being the other mouse is more relevant than the keyboard so should be higher

  • Pat W09/12/2009 at 15:42

Hehehe, not quite. Just got to get the references from my past employers both sorted and then get a letter from CTL for the Jobcentre so they know what I'll be doing for them and I've got to fill in a form for the Jobcentre as well. That just needs to be sorted first.

sorry, they already finished the Channel Tunnel Link

    ;-)

    ooh very cool

  • Pat W09/12/2009 at 15:47

The first time I saw him he walked on to stage holding a gate, said, "yes I do walk with a distinctive gait, I have only just got this back, I actually witnessed the guy stealing it, I would of said something but I didn't want him to take offence (a fence)"

I've seen him on TV arrive on stage with a gate and he said "what an entrance"

  • Alex Andronov09/12/2009 at 15:47

The thing is that a bubble sort is so rubbish that you never would really want to implement it... I think Lukeh is using VB.Net isn't there: MyArray.Sort(MyArray) built in?

someone will know the name of this, but ms used to ship a default sample database containing a bunch more useful data than you're working with. can you not use that?

must have. i think you were right earlier. javascript is really the only time you might have a need for it.

I think they want to teach structures. That's my guess. I mean you want to sort by something, but you very rarely want to sort by id, you want to sort by name and get the ids back in order so you can render the data.

  • Lukeh09/12/2009 at 15:52

sorry I've brought it up a lot recently too, tis probably very annoying :(

This time tomorrow it will all be done and my head will be safely screwed back onto my no-weight-of-the-world shoulders!

  • Alex Andronov09/12/2009 at 16:02

I just realised that tomorrow is the 10th! Do you know what that means? It means its a special end of row day. I didn't record a special end of row day video... And I'm out tonight...

Also it was supposed to go short joke, long joke, but then I didn't have enough long jokes and Mr C made me record a whole load when I came back from the Christmas party so then I decided it had to be bow tie, no bow tie. So it's all good :)

I am thinking we should all record Sunday's joke together on Saturday :)

The weird thing about the request by Abu to be the last race is that in the very first timetable for 2010 I thought that they were last... and then moved by mutual agreement....

Or am I confusing some other track change?....

  • Steven Roy09/12/2009 at 18:54

As far as I know they when the Abu Dhabi race was first announced the press release said it would be the last race for 2009 but would then move to another slot in the calendar.

Just glancing through planetf1's latest and this caught my eye...

"However, the newspaper reports that Red Bull are unwilling to let a driver they have spent so much time, energy and money on leave the team."

It's about Algie and comes from this article...

It looks like a good time to sell..

I think he is worth a full season. He was dropped in at the deep end last year without a single test day before he had to race the car. Give him the winter to prepare and lets see what he can do next year.

    No.

I found it very odd when I lived in France for a while. People kept turning up with booze and food which we spent two hours consumong before going for lunch because it was their saint's day. I had never heard o such a thing but the custom in France is when it is the day of the saint with your name you take booze and food to work and everyone you work with has a pre-lunch party. Most odd. Especially as lunch breaks were a little longer than I had been used to anyway.

    "Vettel was the same"

I don't recall that he was remotely like Algie....

I seem to recall that he did pretty well fairly quickly... even when being thrown in after the Kubes in Canada incident...

He got a point in his first race and then was swapped to Toro Rosso and took a fourth place in China... I was opposite the TR pits and the engineers went wild whilst the Red Bull guys slunk away....

Liuzzi who had a whole season in that car got 3 points in the same race....

I really think Vettel shone in that first season whilst Algie didn't....

I really think Vettel shone in that first season whilst Algie didn't....

Vettel is miles a better driver than Alguesuari is. But I think that is down to the fact that initially in 2007, testing was allowed. Alguesuari, I like him. I think anyone who came in mid-season got a tough break due to the lack of testing.

China, I think the car was just very good wasn't it? Again, despite Liuzzi's total awesomeness, I think he isn't as good as Vettel.

Plus I think Vettel was older when he started? Probably by a day or something, but still.

She's earned her way up by perservering in old cars when only she and 2 others had them out of a 20+ car field. This year I think she was in a 1yr old car so something of an upgrade, but I gather she didn't fare much better (I haven't kept up).

    3gs

    3gs

Cool. Just wanted to see if there was any chance a 3g could run these apps. I'm guessing no...

  • Andy Taylor09/12/2009 at 23:12

Cool. Just wanted to see if there was any chance a 3g could run these apps. I'm guessing no...

No, because the 3G camera doesn't support video.

  • Alex Andronov09/12/2009 at 23:13

    muuuuuuch better than qik.

I think the processor is the key differential. The nokia with qik and HDSPA was slower than Christine's phone.

We and as I say we haven't seen qik on iphone over 3G.

So it will be interesting to test.... Sync is taking a second or two because another application is being installed which I didn't know about

  • Alex Andronov09/12/2009 at 23:13

No, because the 3G camera doesn't support video.

    (sort of)

  • Andy Taylor09/12/2009 at 23:13

No, because the 3G camera doesn't support video.

Although the App page on iTunes says 3G is supported.

  • me09/12/2009 at 23:14

no rush. this may be the tipping point when we have to sell christine's kidney...

  • Alex Andronov09/12/2009 at 23:14

Although the App page on iTunes says 3G is supported.

I think they mean "over 3G"

  • Alex Andronov09/12/2009 at 23:14

no rush. this may be the tipping point when we have to sell christine's kidney...

The only rush is I am supposed to be in bed! ;)

  • Andy Taylor09/12/2009 at 23:15

I think they mean "over 3G"

Nope, says "iPhone 3G and 3GS model" then "over Wifi and 3G" underneath

  • Andy Taylor09/12/2009 at 23:16

no rush. this may be the tipping point when we have to sell christine's kidney...

    Hehe.

  • Andy Taylor09/12/2009 at 23:19

i think the etherpad people are being brought in to give wave some direction.

it won't necessarily be bad. i just liked it the way it was.

  • Lukeh09/12/2009 at 23:55

it won't necessarily be bad. i just liked it the way it was.

What about when Wave reaches, or hopefully reaches, the expectations you had when you see the potential of it?

  • me10/12/2009 at 00:02

What about when Wave reaches, or hopefully reaches, the expectations you had when you see the potential of it?

good question. haven't thought about it much since working on site updates. will look into it properly in the new year.
