The big news of yesterday was about Silverstone and the fact that the future of the British Grand Prix is now secure. I am mostly happy about this news because it means we don't have to talk about any more deadlines. I like it when things get settled. Meanwhile, here are some of the other things we're talking about:
- Stuart has made quite an impact on his blog already, with an excellent post about that age old problem - the so-called F1 journalist, that stays at home and lets everyone else do the hard work for them. The more we vote with our feet, the more influence we can all have.
- The edited version of this weekend's F1 Debrief was posted yesterday, and we use the brand new Disco Dan theme tune as an outtro. Thanks to Nikki and her friend Julie Mahendran - there must be drinking and there must be disco.
- Stefano Domenicali has been discussing how he thinks Ferrari might fare next year, and of course he's saying they'll do better than 2009. I don't see how they could do much worse really. It was a tricky car, and they had a lot of bad luck and troubles to keep their attention off improving the car. How will they do in 2010 though? How will Alonso fit in? Stefano says he'll be a breath of fresh air.
That's all for now. Let us know what you're doing today, and how your week is going so far, and as ever, I will see you in the comments.
PING
Worth repeating, for discussion
helllo today! I have been at work for an hour already. Quickest hour ever!
It's almost noon, do you start that time every day?
#luckysod
Hi Amy
sorry 'bout the scheduling issue. not sure if mentioned, but since removing wordpress from the front-end of the site, it means the faux-scheduler never fires.
essentially what used to happen, is every time anyone requested any page, the first thing that happened was wordpress checked to see if there were timed posts waiting to be published and then made them public if need be.
clearly this slowed down browsing and is part of the reason why the site is a bit faster now.
i had no idea the scheduler wasn't a real one (they seem keen to keep it quiet), so now i has to write a proper one (tis on the list). in the meantime the only time the scheduler will run now is when spam is sent via the old wordpress pages. insane but true.
luckily we get hundreds of spam a day, so posts will eventually appear, and i'll fix the issue asap.
sorry.
no, just the last two weeks i have been doing 1030-630. I dont like it, it makes me stay up til 4am and i dont get anything done! Tomorrow i am working 730-330 which is the shift i prefer. Hate getting out of bed but i like finishing while the sun is still out :D
That would've been an ideal post from 'pinger' :D
Thanks for the info though
Welcome to [half of] my world!
Am thinking of going without surname for the rest of this week and then make a final decision.
[kinda preferring it, tbh]
And on that bombshell, i shall leave y'all.
Night all
ah. poo
i like it. the catch is, what happens when another bassano come along?
i like it clapper-less
Goodnight.... pinger
Hmm.
Night
We'll have beers and work it out :)
perfect.
:D
G'night Jonboy
Night Jon
The Clapper is still there, it's just silent (!)
I can see it sticking. Gettign used to it now
:D
I suppose today's revelation was Silverstone's 17 year deal
What were the thoughts on the revised track layout?
i am cold so i want to put my jacket on but my jacket is wet and thus makes me colder. Plus it smells like wet wool. Stupid rain.
Seen it before but it could be interesting from the fan perspective (more sightlines), if not the driver perspective (loss of a challenging section).
Unless the modified section will be for bikes and the current kept for cars/F1
Has summer not arrived in Melbourne yet?
no they said if it is ready, they'll use it
So is the new section just there to provide grandstand space?
we were oddly discussing this last night. at the moment, there isn't many places to add seating. so my guess would be yes.
summer arrived but we are having our one day of rain for the month today.
That was my initail, cynical impression when I read the BBC story with track layout graphic
Yeah they are providing either a stand or spectator banking on the inside and outside of the new corner, as well as giving those at Becketts something else to look at, they can now see two parts of the track.
I thought Melbourne was a bit wetter than that
Oh well, never mind. It's been lashing down here for weeks
I think originally they did it for MotoGP safety and the extra seating may be a bonus?
One day a month?
What's so unsafe for bikes about the current layout?
Steven, heard this earlier and thought you might know the answer:
If a black hole got married, would it still be considered a singularity?
If it got married to another blckhole they would both be a singularity
Not enough runoff at Bridge and Priory, I think?
What remains unsaid is the runoff at Brooklands on what is currently the National straight, which is not big enough. I was at the BTCC round last year which used the National track and there were several cars in that gravel trap, and it was wet and they were reaching the barrier on the other side of the trap. The higher speeds of bikes and F1 cars will make that worse so I don't know what they'll do.
I should add that it is fine for the current GP layout because the angle of approach and the approach speed is so different.
silverstone has never been a circuit that says to me "you must fly to the other side of the world and see me!"
It's flat and flat does not create the impact of somewhere like Spa.
It has never said to me "you must drive 2hrs to see me".
I've been twice, once for an F1 test and one for BTCC. I wasn't inspired tbh.
Apart from this year I've generally thought Silverstone produced great racing
It's one of those circuits like the A1 Ring that doesn't lokk anything special but has way more than its share of great races.
It isn't a great place to visit though. I grant you my visits were coloured by circumstance - I was ill for one and it was grey and horrible for the other.
I'm not keen on a new design reducing the challenge of a great & classic circuit
The food stands were better than Thruxton's though :-)
The current version has almost nothing to do with the classic layout. They have been messing with it since the 70s and in the 80s they made massive changes
best time i had at silverstone was for testing, the first year i went. a slow wander around the perimeter, loads of vantage points. great to see cars tackle a variety of corners.
gp weekends it's impossible to see much.
See, i don't expect decent food at events like that. If it happens, it's a welcome bonus - like glastonbury
That's how I felt at first, but I just saw the new stand they are building at the new corner. That'll be a fantastic place to watch. They created an overtaking place in front of your eyes, and you can see the Becketts section quite close too.
Ever evolving then
melbourne is flat and i like our race but i think thats because they go out of their way to make it an "event." plus the weather appeals more than a grey english day ;) and it has a lake. Or something.
I tagged along as the 'plus one' for a Red Bull thing. We got into the paddock, that bit was great! Then we were taken on a bus tour (the wrong way) around the perimeter, stopping at a couple of places. It was great to see the cars in different places before being herded on (a great place was the entry to Maggotts), there's just no getting around the fact it is a featureless flat airfield though.
which year out of interest?
I don't really care what a venue looks like if the racing is enthralling
I am not sure about that. They took it from a very high speed track to a track with lots of twiddly bits that add nothing. Stowe and Club used to be awesome corners and now they are nothing. The final twisty section is a ridiculous waste of tarmac. The only area they have improved is the Maggotts/Necketts complex
Then at the touring car, I was just a paying punter and ventured into various stands. They are years out of date. They could get so many more people into the available space if they tried.
the first section yep, but not down to vale and back up to brooklands surely?
2005
The modifications that created the vale section were done to add a little gradient change.
it's not little wen you walk it :)
ahh, i think mine was '07. passed a lot of hospitality busses though.
I watched the SEAT Cup from Luffield. It was great in some respects because you could see a lot of cars - but they were too slow and too far away!
Back from Brisbane.
And I hate Christmas shopping.
Dunno. I was on a bus. I'm also referring to the surroundings. There was no atmosphere. Now I freely admit there would be atmosphere during the GP but some places have it already, without that...
Ditto [have done none yet]
Brisbane still full of bats?
Hi.
And Hi, Sean
Bats?
Yup, quite lot, from memory
I need to get to bed. I'm not sure where tonight has gone... Catch you tomorrow..
night pat
Night Pat
G'night fella
No bats where I was. Theres a fair few down here in Sydney now though. Maybe they've migrated.
So, after tallying up what I have bought on my first day of Christmas shopping I have presents for 1.5 people and I bought myself 10 things. I'm really bad at this.
I love how the harbour bridge lights are always swarming with bats in Sydney
In Brisbane I stayed in a huge multi-level hostel next to the CBD with a rooftop BBQ area and at dusk we always saw tons of bats
:)
if anyone asks, im not on my way to get a cheeseburger. #freepracticefastfood
Or really good, in the wrong way ;)
I had no idea that Australia was covered in bats
Most towns up the East Coast but those two places stood out for me
And just like everything else down here, they're deadly bats! ;)
Where aren't you going to, MacDonalds or Hungry Jacks?
I just assumed they were deadly when I found out they existed
Do you guys still tell the American tourists about the 'Drop Bears' in the Botannical Gardens?
Yep. Americans are great, aren't they? ;)
Alleged [Rabid Koalas] :D
I had a friend who'd tell them about Metric Time
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULEQpUY_crc
I LOVE the Bundy Bear
I had a T-shirt with him in [NSFW, or SPC]
i refuse to refer to burger king as hungry jacks! Went to mcdonalds. Got a quarter pounder instead. Where is that free practice!
What free practice?
Whoever's racing, they're probably waiting for the weekend ;)
It's not even a Friday. :P
Hi everyone.
Hi Journeyer
Hello there.
ill assume someone somewhere in the world is practicing something and so my lack of willpower is justified.
Hello, everyone.
We got an instant holiday today - just found out about it last Friday. :D Feast day of the city, same day as the Immaculate Conception.
Not the best start to the day, though. My PC hanged overnight, so my torrent didn't finish last night. Worse, it's now downloading much slower than it was last night. Boo. :(
practicing how to dance, maybe. not racing. ;) :D
How about this?
http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/07122009/23/rossi-action-today-tomorrow.html
rossi. Perfect. I am full and regretting my decision
Why regretting it?
hooray our systems have crashed just as friends starts! I like not working when there is tv i want to watch on.
:D
regretting because i am full and now im sleepy
Now you can go get another burger
Friends has become the new Star Trek. Somewhere in the wolrld at anytime, there is an episode currently showing
well, at least there's no work at the moment. and there's Friends! :D
I've always thought of it that way ever since the show ended.
Which episode?
in the next 14 days friends is on 184 times on this channel. But its only about 20 episodes repeated over and over again.
that's 4 days worth of TV - out of 14 days? :O
todays episode is the one with the chick and the duck to be followed by the one with the screamer.
I always like the chick & the duck jokes
technically its only 72 times, i forgot my search showed the results for the +2 timeshift channel as well :D
36 hours, then - still a day and a half! :O
My girlfriend would LOVE that channel though. :D
There are +2 channels as well now
Is that for people who tune into +1 too late?
We don't get +1 channels here. But almost every channel has a +2. It's their way of making it look like there are twice as many channels as there really are. LIES!
its mostly for people who live in WA so they can still watch things in primetime.
Favourite random tweets of the day:
Never forget Pearl Harbor. And how bad Ben Affleck was in it

Their fault for living in [or near] the remotest city in earth - Perth
Kate Beckinsale was HOT there, though.
:D
It won't be long before we have the infomercial channel +1
As opposed to when? ;)
When is she not?
not sure if this has been mentioned, but google have started live updating search results, like twitter:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/google-live-updating-png
Excellent points made, gentlemen. :D
perth is further away than new zealand! And that is why i will never go there. If i have 3 hours spare to fly somewhere home will win every time.
Humoungous *facepalm*
I think they're on the same timezone as we are. ;)
what's there to see in perth?
Even if Perth was home I'd still pick NZ over WA.
huh?
Everone I know who has visited WA has raved about it
But the short answer is 'I dunno'
Just Google and their... ways
Beginning to irritate lately
ah. i quite likes it. here's a recent tweet from me:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/google-f1-live-search-png
picked up instantly.
It's like a wannabe Sydney. They have a harbour thats nice, but not as nice, beaches that are nice but possibly not as nice. Sure, its less crowded but everything shuts at like 3pm so theres nothing to do. Even the pubs close at like 10 or something.
Wha?
How do Aussies stand for that?
Exactly. But we can claim that they are so far away that they aren't really Australians over there. ;) As Amy said, New Zealand is 2 hours closer to Sydney than Perth is.
What search term do you use to find that?
f1
And the fact that you have something actually called 'The Great Sandy Desert' in the middle still amuses me
Wouldn't a twitter search find that, or is that a silly Q?
yup. but this searches twitter, facebook, jaiku and identi.ca.
Yeah ok, I'll let you have that one then ;)
am guessing it probably crashes less too.
Maybe that's what took down Bing over the weekend
[not a 'Friends' joke]
:D
Yuck. Remind me never to give my dog barbacue flavoured Shapes biscuits again. He's just vomited it back up.
Ewww
i hate given up on tv because someone changed it to test cricket so im reading the book with the missing first page. Heart kindle pdf support. Heart AA.
I think my New Year's resolution will be to read that too

The Julie Mahendran link in both the Daily and the Debrief post are broken. Removing the slash at the end should make them work.

Enjoying the music!
I reaalllyyy like google alerts
So that's weird.
Morning.
Looks like Silverstone is going to get the touch of Tilke, at least by the way this layout looks: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/80477
not sure if this is a Tilke design, as this was designed originally for MotoGP.
It's different to the MotoGP design. The old design linked the international cicuit to the national circuit, while this one seems to have some funny looking switchback instead of the arrow corner. It looks like the style of a Tilke change even if it isn't him.
have I missed anything other than the British GP news while I was offline since last Friday ?
Fixed, thanks Jason.
Mr Giggles, today I had to demonstrate the kindle to four people and for all of them I used your book to demonstrate pdf support. And then I told them all they should buy it :D
Morning all....
Errrrm Alex? I have a confession to make.
I drove under a scary pink sky this morning: http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/2009-12-08-07-46-49
That's cool!
It's dark here at the moment when I commute, but in a couple of months I get to see the sun rise and set when I cross the sea bridge that links the two islands here. It looks just like that and it's fantastic!
What's that?
Yay :)
Oooh!
I errrrm spilled milk all over your book and had to throw it in the bin this very morning. I will get a new one.... I considered drying it out but it was already starting to smell.
Oh noes! How awful!
The book with the smelly first page? Alex, there's the title for the sequel! ;)
heh :)
Things not recommended for my book list just got a bit longer:
* Folding down the corners of the pages
* Spilling milk all over it
It really was unsalvageable. Bad times....
Why are you against it?
Your book will soon need to come with an instruction manual!
Oh my god. Don't get into this again. It's just WRONG.
It is amazing how good the effect a can of Red Bull has - I am truly amazed every time I have one!
Fair enough. I have bookmarks. My wife just leaves the book open pages down on the table instead. But then again, she only reads Mills and Boon and she chucks them afterwards so it's OK. She wouldn't read the Jackie Stewart book though :(
Milk really really stinks when it gets like that so I understand.
Yes... See Bookmarks...
Maybe one day I'll get a wiki page :)
She refuses to use one - I have even bought and made one for her!
I bought one for Katherine the other day... But she has millions.
Have you considered divorce? Some things are just a step too far...
Oh God. I got soaked watching that awful football game on Sunday night (we played like numptys so everyone left early) and as I feared, I am getting sick :(
That's a bit harsh!
I just finished Murray Walker's book. Did not like.
I'm really not sure it is :P
Which one? It's a bit of a let down because it's about him and not F1 - cynically he released another book called 'Murray Walker's F1 Heroes'...
Considering all we have been through and what she does for me, it is ;)
I should add that the bit I wanted to read about was an inside scoop on what life really was like in the F1 paddock, but he seemed to leave that out. He must have some stories!
I should add that she lets me do all my F1 stuff without complaint and even brings me Burger King or makes me Bagels when the race is on!
Mmm. Not just that though. The advertising talk is interesting, but there wasn't much substance through the whole book.
Yum yum yum. Hehe I'm sure she's lovely. If someone touched my books though..... There'd be trouble.
I'm inclined to agree. I think he's left a lot of things out that would have made the book very interesting...
I think he's too nice to write the book he should have written.
Oh she'll never read my books, you can be sure of that!
Yeah I think that's what I am trying to say. He was even nice about James Hunt, and they were famous for not getting on very well!
I want to download dragon dictate for the iPhone but the server is overcapacity with everyone downloading it... http://www.dragonmobileapps.com/
I found there was too much in there.
The only bit I found interesting was when he talked about James Hunt because he really went into detail.
Other than that it was - I went here, I did this. I worked in advertising, I went to South Africa, then I went to a race and talked a bit. I travelled the world, I worked for the BBC, I moved to ITV.
I know these facts, I want to know how he feels about them. I wasn't looking for gossip, but I was still disappointed.
I wouldn't say he was nice about him. He was respectful.
I have forgotton what he said exactly because it's been about 7 years since I read it - but yes I got the impression that he was being respectful towards him even though he may not have liked or understood him.
That's it... That's it entirely. He didn't seem to particularly care about the things he was talking about. Which made it harder to care about what he was talking about. Or something.
Exactly - it's a log rather than a diary of his thoughts in that respect. I mean that he may have left a lot of thoughts or stories out because they may have been too naughty or revealing to those involved, which is a shame really...
Oooh Christine this looks like a fun app for android users: http://www.google.com/mobile/goggles/#landmark
Ooooh, I will have to test that out later. Sadly I have no Golden Gate Bridges near me, but I might be able to find a logo.
:)
Surely there's a Chinese Restaurant with the same name where you live? ;)
Is this what the scouts or girl guides meant when they said "be prepared". Always keep a golden gate bridge in your back pocket.
I thought Google Goggles was that drunken emailing thing?
I <3 my HTC Magic every day. :-D
Oooh I've had a bad experience with HTC ... but then it was running Windows ;)
Morning all.
Morning Lukeh. How goes it?
Not too bad. It's not Monday which is always good ;) but lots of assignment work ahead.
In the spirit of brangelina and tomkat, I name thee Loukeh. Or am I too late?
heeeeeheheheh!!
Isn't tantamount to treason to say anything vaguely like criticism of Murray Walker?
Maybe, but I have noticed a lot more criticism of him in the last few years...
Is it?
why oh why did I laugh
Surely LuLou would be better?
I got the impression you couldn't say anything bad about 'our Murray' (not that I'm included in that 'our')
Like that. Conflicted now!
and to think of the effort I went to get that season review in as quick as possible!
Although it is funny. Damn. Now I'm conflicted too.
Hehehe. Hey, I just like playing with words, Mr C is the one planning your wedding.
Could be. Doesn't make me think any less of him, I just didn't like his book.
Zoe and I are back to talking about baby boy names since I mentioned the Loukeh thing. Why can't I keep my mouth shut?
I am not allowed to have Brock. She doesn't seem keen on Bond (just Bond) either
#notexpecting
Haha, very true!
One day I'm gonna end up leaving my laptop free in the living room and mum'll take a gander, as she does, and read about lou and myself getting married in a factory to much confusion and discussion :)
That would be a slightly awkward conversation, but you can always #blame someone else. :)
"Mum: Explain yourself...
Me: ...hashtag blame sidepodcast.
Mum: ......?!"
I wake in a daze to try and work out how to say hashtags....but now my question is answered....dont try
I just Google Translated a tweet from di licious and apparently it says:
"Already begun the day on the run .. I need a vacation."
He's on the run!! There must be some headlines in this.
He's earning money as a Getaway driver during the off season?
both are excellent choices!
But how about Nick and Alison? :D
I wouldn't have thought he was fast enough for that!
someone might just actually try to make one. Hehe.
Nickason.
Sounds like a dodgy business enterprise to me
Nison?
Alick?
Aick?
do you mean Lucas Di Grassy Knoll? Because di_licious doesn't seem to be f1 related
alisonick?
But he's delicious.
oooh good use of N
mr C must be so happy his real name isn't public. Heh!
*Wonders how to combine 'me' and 'Christine'*
Christime
Christmene?
even more so than Franck?
hoorah, thats what came to my head too
He is more delicious than Franck, yes. But I do not heart him.
groove is in the heart? By Dee-Lite. The lyrics fit somehow
do you get the 'tall jan is malicious' crunchy nut cornflakes ads over there? I hear it in my head everytime anyone says the word delicious, but it won't make sense if you haven't seen the ad
Random thought: Zoeremy.
I'm on a roll! I think.
I get the feeling this is all like movies - that franck is the original, the one that simply cannot be beaten. Declisious is a sequel that may have nicer special effects but in truth you know you cannot heart it as much
Jonbi
I win ;)
Jon and who?

http://twitter.com/Greggsthebakers
WOAH
That-is-awesome
but we are zoejay!
you actually named yourselves?
Oooooh.
You know the next step is sausage rolls via the interwebs. Yum yum.
I may have to ask them to DM me some yummy sausage rolls
Funny that they had an impersonator!
Now that is blasphemy! How dare someone impersonate greggs, treason at its worst
There you go Jeremy - it's ok to criticize Murray but don't touch Greggs!
so many times and with so many variations, it hurts.
We may also be considering changing both our surnames to Fox when we get married rather than Zoe adopting mine. Seems only fair that we both change
Why Fox?
I think it might be a good idea to edit my podcast before submitting it for the Megamix - or at least change its format. My PDA reckons that in WAV format (the only one it can record in), the files come out at 326MB in total...
WAV's are alot bigger than mp3's though, so it may not be *as* big
Can you not convert to MP3? I am planning to record in clip format too I think...
Do you happen to be thinking of getting married at the Williams Conference Centre?
because then my name will be Michael J Fox. We both agreed it was a cool last name as well. I'm still pushing to name our hypothetical son: Brock Ayrton Fox
:D
How can you be Michael and Jeremy? You must get yourself confused an awful lot ;)
I'm pushing for it, but I get the same response as trying to get the name Brock across the line
That is brilliant.
I'm not sure Mr C goes round calling himself "me"
Although if he does that would make my day
He does refer to himself as Mr C, though.
my dads name was Michael. I get to use my middle name instead. I wouldn't recommend it though - bloody annoying when filling out official forms
in actual public?
I see. Both my Dad and I have the same middle name because both our Dads have a first name beginning with 'G'!
Oh. Dunno. We don't go out in public :)
I think they should have called you Gordon ;)
ah yes
yay! I feel much less crazy now
That's my Uncle and my Grandad's name though...
Outside be a terrifying place. One should only travel outside for emergencies, and Greggs
Hoorah!
+ White Chocolate + Harribo
+work. I like work. Feeling crazy again :P
sleep may cure it. Bye all!
lets hope so ;) im outside in a bit, but only to go inside again!
Byeee Mr Fox
ooh. I like that.
I am a manther now, one day I will graduate to silver fox!
Fantastic Mr Fox.
i seem to have taken to introducing myself as "sidepodcast" when meeting f1 people. i need to stop that.
You are missing the key word "from"
true.
I was almost tempted to go outside and celebrate Greggs being on Twitter with a quick visit... but it is raining.
I once went to Greggs in a thunderstorm
#dedication
#addiction ;)
Well I had to get some lunch at work
RIP John Lennon

Swim time pour moi
Adios
Thanks Alex, Dragon Dictate for iPhone is amazing!
I really am going to bed, I'll just put that load of washing on...
I braved the outside. I am dedicated too.
Or hungry.
L'orealGreggs; because they're worth it.We had Lasagne for lunch today.
Except it had grated carrots in it. And it was made of chicken :(
:)
fAlex? Fake Alex? What did you do with the real one?
Arrgh!
Phew I'm back peoples!
I have realised the milk took more victims :( :( :(
Stupid carton!!!!
Oh God! What now???
Maybe you should forgo milk for a while?
I think she's Lactose intolerant ;)
My newspaper that I was just sitting down to read and my rug. The rug is slightly more hassle as I'm going to have to actually wash it....
Hahaha aren't you hillarious. This was soya milk.... I spilled it on these things this morning at the same time as the book. I just hadn't noticed until now. It's smelly.
I'm here all week ;)
Pick on the ill person why don't you :(
Poor Alison :(
Oh poor Alison, you never give anyone stick do you? ;)
Ferrari are called Team Wales on the f1 BATracer carset now...!
You wha...?
They changed all the team names because of the ferrari debacle
Can you not convert to MP3? I am planning to record in clip format too I think... {Comment #279}
I can, but I've got to get it onto my PC first (because it doesn't seem to understand the concept of microphones) and it's taken over an hour so far...
Can you give us a list of the new names then?
Just seen someone mention it on twitter. BATracer isnt accessible from my uni (for some reason?)
I've heard the steak is a bit tough though
Ferrari are called Team Wales on the f1 BATracer carset now...! {Comment #330}
Probably the nearest Wales will get to its own F1 team.
tip your waitresses
Is it normal for tweets to appear from people you don't follow and that haven't been retweeted?
hi btw
Apparently so. I had one the other day which was marked as being from FriendFeed, despite my not having an account with them or following the person it came from.
Ummm... No... I don't think so... Was it glinner I just retweeted that.
Nope, I see that one - retweeted by alexandronov and 33 others.
Popular tweet!
It's another one. Looks like spam to me, I take a screenshot.
Ah oddd.... Looks like twitter is about to keel over actually the more button just broke for me.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/spamtweets-png
That's gotta be the ham in the can!
I figured as much. I don't understand how. Am not at all impressed.
Is this the start of the end of twitter?
For me, yes.
that user has a very very weird profile. It follows hardly anyone and it has more than 8 thousand followers.
My guess is something you have given your twitter password to is using the API to make you follow a user... making a tweet and then setting you to unfollow them. It's sneaky because you don't get an e-mail when you follow somebody.
I think you should report them for spam.
Nah. I give up. There's only so much I can put up with :)
Absolutely... Just out of interest... If you can bear it can you tell me if you have any apps in here: http://twitter.com/account/connections
Is it normal for tweets to appear from people you don't follow and that haven't been retweeted? {Comment #339
Never heard of it before... ...must look out for that.
No applications have been approved to use your account.
Then change your twitter password NOW just in case...
Oh... Twitter FAIL
Friend of mine got some twitter spam like the original comment is describing. Wonder what's going on (I just got into the office)
love this quote:
"See if you can figure out a way to ask a question of anyone at Twitter. They are an anti-social social networking site."
:)

"We’ve tried smoke signals with similar results."
My podcast finished copying over to my PC about five minutes ago, in case anyone's interested in a progress report. Now to load up Audacity and take out the errors and unnecessary pauses.
Incidentally, Mum heard me talking and apparently thought I was having a lengthy phone call with someone. Which would be a bit strange because I can't remember the last time I spent 45 minutes on the phone. She was relieved to hear it was only a podcast and there wasn't going to be a humongous bill arriving at home any time soon...
love it.
how the chuff did they ever get to be so successful?
Ask MediaTemple ;)
that's easy. mediatemple are crazy cheap. when we move, our bills are only going to go one way. but you get the service you pay for.
with twitter there are other free alternatives available. i don't get it.
too busy worrying about staying up for a day without a problem see
I'm going back to identica :)
their homepage is ace now. however, no tweetdeck :(
I have discovered that fitting loft insulation is not a cure to a splitting headache....
Twhirl?
It updates automatically!
although it doesnt support lists...
Booooooo!!
discontinued.
doohickey-esque.
Twitter should have been blown up a long time ago and redone properly.
Ya know... you guys could run your own laconica server...
;)
We haz a doohickey!
i blame celebrities. and their pull on the rest of the world.
incidentally, Tiger has been in the Top 3 trending topics for the last few hours now...
am wondering if people might stop comparing hamilton to him now?
Needz moar doohickey!
Eye of the...?
hmmm. yeah. unless lewis ends up doing the same thing, of course...
Well, Tiger's wife beat him up with a "tool of his trade", so to speak... I think if Lewis were to cheat his gf should beat him up with one of those stickered ferrari wheel covers :D
Why do I keep reading whitmarsh saying Lewis and Jenson will work as a team anyways? Why does Whitmarsh need to keep telling us?
isn't he telling the media not to even think about writing the opposite?
Afternoon all.
What's going on?
this is starting to look like the time Ron had a very public conversation with Alonso at the Bahrain paddock in 2007 - trying to send a very public message.
and just like last time, it could all so easily backfire.
Positive thinking, innit? If you keep telling yourself something will be alright, it's supposed to be alright.
sure but I've seen autosport report it several times in the last few weeks, I don't see why he has to keep telling people what is gonna happen.
Plus I refuse to believe the man is psychic ;)
#blamebbcwebsite?
afternoon. How's Monaco?
Like some sort of neuro-linguistic programming jive?
Much nicer than last year. Finding the Forum was a cinch. I just go down a lift, walk down a slope, walk down some steps, walk down another slope, cross a road, take another lift, walk down another slope, cross a road, and Bob's your uncle.
Coming back sounds quite uphill.
Afternoon alll
:D
Why do all the Brit's keep telling me that this mysterious "Bob" is my uncle?
It was/is. Don't fancy it after tomorrow night's do.
I found a wine shop and bought some wine. On the way back to the apartment I was gripped by the fear that the kitchen wouldn't have a corkscrew. Fortunately this is not the case. I'm going to have a glass of wine and then have a nap - early start (4.40) this morning...
Bon soir...
I actually do have an Uncle Bob.
Monkhouse's Syndrome by proxy?
:)
hahaha :)
afternoon sir. how are we all today?
Am sitting on the balcony with a glass of wine and listening to F1 Debrief, which I downloaded yesterday. The folly of Summerton has just been nailed...
I'm not jealous. nope. not at all. not one bit (grrrr)
Mr summerton does get a bit annoying after a while...i stopped following him on my personal twitter
i think that might be the most exotic location said show has ever been consumed.
Someone was on holiday and made friends with their neighbour on a balcony, didn't they?
Got any neighbours, Stuart?
ooh yeah!
I should add "whilst listening to a show."
Not just people making friends with people.
It's a bit nippy out, so all I've got for company is an air-con extractor, a brush, a mop and a bucket.
you're not selling the glamour of monaco all that well.
Sounds like it'll be easy to clean, though.
:D
Afternoon all.
Dear iPod,
I currently have 900 songs. Just because I listened to a song when I put you on shuffle does not mean I want you to play another song by that artist!
that is what random is.
there's a slider to make it less random i think.
hulllo chappie.
But it happens all the time - and shuffle is not random...
Don't think I've ever been called a chappie before! I shuld warn you, I'll be sporadic for a few hours, currently continuing my career in the game. Today, China! On Lap 10, currently leading
are you keeping notes.
Nothing electronic is completely random
Not really. I'll start now! *opens word*
blog post?

We'll see...
Hi everybody.
Afternooon
that's weird. I'm listening to your voicemail on the debrief!
hey ya.
Great article, thanks.
There is a big debate about whether online poker random number generators are random enough... I certainly get much better cards online than I do in real life...
And my iPod just did it again, BTW...
is there a setting?
you need kryptonite, clearly.
I would like to see a statistical analysis of that ;)
I fear if I uncovered anything, I might have to disappear!
A who what now?
hello sidepodworld
What, I can't set a reminder for 8 weeks out?! Google Calendar FAIL!
from the article i just linked to?
hi guille.
When I play poker online I find that I get a few good hands consecutively way too often. I also get streaks of 2,3 2,4 etc
wow. I never thought that there existed mass 'real' random number generators. after reading it it seems obvious that you could use radioactive decay or a chaotic system to do that, but never crossed my mind that somebody could actually be doing it
Most of them aren't "random", technically, they're pseudo-random: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudorandom_number_generator
and for 20 years too.
#sameperson I was just about to link to that article!
The thing is that you obviously notice the times that it happens and don't notice the times that it doesn't. So you suffer from false sampling.
Interestingly beginners luck is a genuine fact which is provable. Because of an inherent sampling problem in the data. If you find out from a group of people who gamble whether they were actually more lucky at the beginning they will on average have been more lucky at the beginning than they are now. Why? Because unless you are more lucky than usual at the beginning you tend to stop playing therefore excluding you from the sample.
how random.
Ticket struggles? What ticket struggles?
From manipeF1:
I'm sure this thing'll be able to generate lots of random numbers: http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/07/ibm-developing-10-petaflop-supercomputer-power7-to-ship-next-ye/
My brother's just informed me that, 4 races into his F1 2009 career on the Wii, he has yet to finish a race due to engine blowouts. made me chuckle.
#sorryRGblameSumoDigital
Is he on Expert mode? I'm just on Advanced. :)
No idea!
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
only pseudo-random numbers. but probably much better than the ones from poker online ;-)
Hello all.
An interesting question here on the randomness is if you were to take the main twitter feed and use it like a random number generator. Say take the first alpha character of the first post you find. Turn the letter into a number from 1 to 26. Count that many tweets forward and take the first letter of that tweet, turn that into a number and again count forward. Do this 6 times in total. Now take the second character of all of those tweets turn them into numbers and add them together. This maps to 150 characters (not 156 - because aaaaaa is 6 not 1). Now use this to pick a character from the next tweet you find and turn that character into a number from 1 to 26.
It still wouldn't be truely random... but it would be very random.
Some pyramid marketing goober is now following me on Twitter. Where do these people come from? Why does he think I want to sell water filters?
What he said.
Although my iTunes does veer into Adam & The Ants b-side strangeness from time to time...
Indeed.
Here's somebody who explains why Gavin thinks it's not random really rather well:
from: http://ask.metafilter.com/23813/Is-an-ipod-on-shuffle-truly-random
And you only have 900 songs...
Say you have 20 songs by 1 artist (two albums is) then you have almost a 5% chance of hearing a song by the same artist next.
The iPod really is the digital equivalent of that big hangar in the final shot from Raiders of the Lost Ark, isn't it?
Surely the most reliable random number generator is sidepodtime.
:)
Have you got yours with you?
I say by tracks.... B... 12... Go.
I think the question there is not why the ipod randomly plays them but why are they there in the first place
Mine is Back in the Fire by Paul Weller.
But it happened 3 times in half an hour! each time a different artist and album!
Mine came up with Never Had No One Ever by The Smiths...
OK then - can you explain why the same 20 songs keep appearing even though it's supposed to be random? If I listen to my music playlist twice a week then the odds of this happening must be astronomical if the probabilty of each song is 1/900-(n-1)*1/900-(n-2)... etc...
Using the iPod often reminds me of the first chapter of Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep, where Deckard and his wife are bickering over which setting to dial on their 'mood organ'. Having so much choice breeds a curious apathy.
Anyway, I used a sandwich as entertainment on the flight over.
http://www.stuartcodling.com/2009/12/on-the-road-to-monaco/
the question is: is the 'shuffle' supposed to be a 'randomize' function. I would expect it to be something like a 'seamless randomize': it does a randomization, but always in similar songs. Given enough time you should end 'far away' from the first song, but without making strange things like playing Mozart after Shakira. More like a random walk than a truly random function...
did someone mention earlier today getting tweets from people you're not following? It's happening for me
?!?!?!
are you getting @'s or DM's?
No... just an automated API by the looks of things. it's not a retweet or a @ or a dm, just... a random set of tweets in my tweetdeck feed. When the profile is clicked, it says I'm not followinf them which is true.
official google chrome beta's for Mac and Linux are out: http://www.google.com/chrome/
ooh yay!
harsh!
same as christine. it's broken.
If someone wants two random numbers all they need to do is take the seconds from the time a fuzzy Christine appears on screen on successive shows
from chrome on the mac :)
Happy mr c?
mmm, should make life much easier.
:D
any idea for a fixing on the no-sound problem?
(from Chrome in Linux...)
Woo! :)
much better chance of sorting it now i can repeat it. w00t!
Hello :)
Afternoon. You look happy
Evening. How is Lou? :)
I've actually been using one of the "alpha" chrome builds for mac for a long time. Only weirdness I've noticed is that sometimes when I want to reply to a post all the buttons say "reply"
i've just finished a very horrible essay... :) all afternoon and it's finally done. i've also had lots of red bull :)
hi lou
mainly good :) what about everyone else?
When are you and Lukeh getting married?
So now you are hyper and have nothing to do
oh i have loads to do don't worry.. just having a break. Plus it's mainly textiles :)
Hey lou.
Had a rather forgettable day.
I'm so jealous!! I want to do more textiles....
errrr....not in the near future...
whats stopping you?
well you're always welcome to come to mine and help me. i'd much rather be doing photography :(
Do it then
Question on celebrity Eggheads
The Honda F1 team was renamed what in 2009?
Red Bull apparently is the wrong answer
hahahahahahah
ahahaha :D
I'm not buying a proper machine!! I could always sneak back into school and do some there.
That was the second F1 question and the second wrong answer. The first question was who won the 1982 world championship between 2 wins for Nelson Piquet.
Rosberg, Prost or Scheckter?
Rosberg but I wouldn't expect them to know that.
Hello again.
hi pat
The Egghead said Scheckter who had retired by then
i'm confused.. i'm reading Jake's Blog and he makes it sound like Jenson didn't know he was moving.. i take it he means that Jenson was surprised by the timing of the announcement (seeing as he was in an interview with Jake?). It made me think, do drivers not get told when announcements will be made public then? I would have thought they would....
ookay.. http://tweetinklingon.com/
The drivers or their management will get told but maybe it is not something Jenson is greatly interested in. I think a driver should be aware because as soon as that announcement is made he has to stop being a driver who is undecided about the best course for his future to one who has to explain why he has made the decision to switch teams. Not being aware can make him look like an idiot.
Now twitter is interesting ;)
I wonder how long it will take before online translation services offer Klingon and how long it will be before GMM pick up their first story from a Klingon source.
There's a piece of software that translates to/from Klingon: http://chattahbox.com/technology/2009/11/19/klingon-translation-program-to-be-released-by-ultralingua/
Err... sorry, it's not a translator, it's to teach people Klingon, my bad.
ah okay.
My favourite of the tweets in Klingon
'oH ghaH QaQ jaj DaqjaH
It means. It is a good day to tweet. A bit different to the normal Klingon saying.
Blimey. The first online community I ever joined have just announced they are going to close at the end of the month...*is in shock*
who's that then?
A theme park appreciation site known as South Parks. I've been a member over 5 years! Unfortunately, Uni meant I couldn't got to parks as often as I could, so I haven't been a regular for about 18 months now...
ah. how come they're closing?
ouch:
http://willthef1journo.wordpress.com/2009/12/08/the-tragedy-of-silverstones-gp-deal/
:(
Main reasons are that the main theme park they're following (Thorpe Park) has sort of gone down the toilet in the past 3 years. The management aren't really listening to the fans , and the park's now full of chavs. As a result, there are less enthusiasts for that park, so less people are using the site. Really bad way to go.
:(
I can't see why it will cost £4 million to make the few repairs necessary. I hope Tom Wheatcroft's son sorts this mess out. Donington always was a great circuit and if he can't sort that out it meant the Donington GP collection wil almost certainly be broken up.
is it still open? we should try and get back there.
becken says steven should write a book:
http://f1around.wordpress.com/2009/12/05/steven-roy-le-seus-artigos-no-sidepodcast/#comment-11709
We don't have any idea what state it was left in, but surely it would only need the track and runoff fixed and that's it, to get it up and running for national racing? The current pit buildings were only replaced a few years ago and they were keeping the pitlane so they could run two tracks at once..
It is closed until further notice
http://www.donington-park.co.uk/grand-prix-collection-museum
Has it gone downhill? Seemed okay last time I was there. Must have been last summer.
Not very MFC and not verry likely given how long it took me to write 5 items
To the regular visitors, it has. If you go once a year, maybe not.
bugger.
:)
so, you already have a few chapters written! ;-)
From what I have read the only big problem is the tunnel into the infield was not completed so there is a need for that to be filled in and the run off at the corner before Coppice to be restored. Everything else is little more than minor repairs and maintenance.
The tunnel at Coppice was completed, there was a fuss after they covered it that there wasn't enough runoff area so they had to make further changes, which I thought they'd done.
The pic on Will's blog with rubble everywhere looks to be taken from the GP loop, that can be ignored for now just to get the national track operational again.
A well known plugger wrote the book with the missing front page (still available on Amazon http://bit.ly/8tWrTM). My book would be the book with the missing 200 pages.
Identica pops out your timeline in a little window. That is way cool.
What they need is a man with a digger to clear any detritus anywhere else around the racing circuit. Don't haul it away, use it to make spectator mounds.
Fix the fences, patch up the asphalt and you've got yourself a club track. They don't need fancy facilities. Get some basic money coming in again and then gradually improve and fix the rest.
instant best-seller :-)
The Melbourne loop is not vital if they have lost all their top level events. They can just use the chicane at Goddards for all events.
are we going back to identica?
Just done the season review for you lot ;)
Btw, I think we may have to redefine RGesque
I am already there. Guille is waiting for us.
righto
I look forward to receiveing confirmation of your order. You can have sole rights to my books in Argentina for $500,000 or you can have all of South America for $1,000,000
ruling the world, one at a time ;-)
mmm... can I take a loan based on the profits of the sells, like CVC?
You made be get identica because twitter was useless then made me switch to twitter and now I have to go back to identica again. I still haven't found a real reason to be on either of them regularly
Since I am Bernie in this deal I don;t mind where the money comes from so long as it ends up in my account
You must know how fickle we are by now.
hehe.
i'm happy with twitter. i mean i hate it, but i use it for the only thing it's good at - pimping our stuff. occasionally it's a good way to abuse mediatemple.
:)
I can't even remember my identica name because that was on my laptop before it died
Someone should compile all the Ted Kravitz facts and release that as a book, like the Chuck Norris book that is out there
http://www.amazon.com/Truth-About-Chuck-Norris-Greatest/dp/1592403441
So if I get a blog I automatically get a use for twitter thrown in?
I'm jamesp on identica, haven't logged in in... well... forever.
exactly.
http://identi.ca/stevenroy
You should have a go. Say hi to me : http://identi.ca/mrschristine
:)
I twee.sorry, what do they call it again?
I found my identica account.
http://identi.ca/stevenroy/
Denting!
And I thought tweeting sounded odd...
incidentally, I'm staying with twitter for the moment. See how things go.
Wish I had read this comment before I set up a new account. I set up a new account then my old one appeared on screen. I have no idea why it didn't appear when I first went to the site or why I don't exist in the search.
really? and i thought tweeting was bad.. at least "tweet" sounds like a message!
it seems all your updates are appearing in twitter anyway so win-win?
Thats the one.
or only some people's are
:D
I never noticed the 'in context' link below the dents that are part of a conversation. it's nice AND useful...
I have no intention of switching unless someone can demonstrate why I should.
I switched mine off.
I have no intention of asking you to.
I just have the two accounts running (same name), but post mainly on identica and the system takes care of redirecting the post to twitter
Can't believe no-one has signed up here
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Daily+Post+Guest+Writers
I didn't know you could.
You are the master of the wiki. I thought you knew everything that was on there.
BTW, how do you do that?
There's a little pop out icon next to the pause button. The popout doesn't seem to autoupdate though.
Errrrrr
*runs*
You been listening to that phonetics cd again? ;)
I really have been struggling with those sounds.
:-( I see it in firefox but not in chrome under linux
The Melbourne loop needs re-doing anyway. Take out the damn chicane!
I have a book which is a collection of "Yeah Right" Slogans for Tui Ads!
Just reading an interesting subcriber-only article on Autosport from Thomas O'Keefe... IndyCar from a Formula 1 perspective
http://www.autosport.com/features/article.php/id/2539
Posted a comment there:
I was born in Nottingham and I consider Donington my home track.
If all of this is true then the words I have for Gillett are simply unprintable. I am absolutely devastated to hear that one of my favourite racing circuits may have ceased to exist.
A truly sad day for British Motorsport if this is not fixed :(
I agree with the sentiments but this is not Gillett's fault. It is the fault of the Wheatcroft's who handed over the track with no guarantees in place. They should have protected their circuit.
How so?
The Wheatcroft's did the deal with Gillett that allowed him to tear up their track without him having the finance to put the dirt back int the holes never mond deliver on his promises. No responsible business would ever allow that to happen. If I turned up at your house and said I wanted to reip your kitchen out and replace it with one made of solid gold would you just hand me the keys and tell me to start tearing out the exiting kitchen or would you ask for some kind of evidence or guarantee that I could deliver?
If you are right then that is shoddy business...
I think it is gross incompetence
well i suppose he still gets to use his motorhome in the off season?.. seems a bit odd though...
also... interesting that Jenson isn't allowed to do any Mclaren stuff, but Rubens is allowed to go to the Williams Factory. I assume their contracts were for the same amount of time?
Yes, but Mercedes wanted to get rid of Barrichello (*sorryLukeh). They didn't want to lose Jenson
super secure though.
his beard isn't fully gone yet...
but the contracts end at the same time? seems unfair for Jenson?
true.
grrrrr.
Rubens isn't champion.
Isn't it a bit cold for a motorhome?
I guess since the team dumped Rubens they felt it was right for them to release him. No doubt they had an advertising campaign built round Jenson and clearly thought he wanted to stay so they are a little upset that he chose to leave. So they are holding him to the letter of his contract.
Have you seen the motorhomes the drivers have?
they let rubens go in good terms. jenson escaped away. it's unfair to jenson, yes, but he did it to himself...
:( it's sad that my favourite team don't like my favourite driver anymore :( i'm still hoping all will be forgiven when Jenson finishes his Mclaren contract and wants to return to them...
You think he is going to stay at McLaren for his full contract?
Hello all.
Just had a look at Will Buxton's article on Donington's current state and the picture at the top of it is simply unbelieveable. I hope Simon Gillett pays for what he's done to an icon of British motor racing, and pays dearly.
i hope not...but you never know :(
Surely he will be in default of his lease agreement, so the Wheatcrofts could go after him; however, given all the dodgy financing Gillett was attempting to arrange, it likely means that he doesn't have much to go after. At any rate, surely his reputation in the motor racing world is shot?
Put it this way - if he dares to show his face at the Autosport show, which I highly doubt, I will have choice words for him.
Get yourself past the crowd thinking the exact same thing first...
:D
He is definietely in default of that. The question now is can the Wheatcrofts sort this mess out and get racing at Donington again
ummm, he's quite a big lad.
no match for a good old fashioned lynch mob
He is also an ex-marine or something similar
I'm still reckoning the lynch mob's going to be so big it doesn't matter.
true. and twice as wide as me.
even frankestein had to run from a lynch mob. he won't have a chance...
While I don't know all the ins and outs of English property laws, it may take some time for them to actually gain control of the circuit to set it right again. Depending on the terms of the lease, he may not have technically defaulted yet (i.e., missed a payment). Hopefully, they had some progress schedule that he is in violation of, but it could take some time for the leasehold interest to be extinguished.
By the sounds of his build, and his angry reception, he could become a wrestler. He'd get such attention and even has a tagline to get angry with
"I'll dig a hole in you too, brother!"
i'm disappointed that the real villain in this episode seems to be escaping any criticism. sure the wheatcroft's may have been negligent, and gillet ambitious but rubbish. however, bernie played them from the start.
i suspect he saw all of this many years ago and used everyone against silverstone.
if you want to blame someone, blame bernie.
:)
But you can't exactly lynch mob an elderly man!
#blamebernie can take the place of #blamesteven, or they have different scopes?
Can we build up a media/blogger/fan campaign?
sure you can.. plus it will solve another problem with the sport too ;)
without proof, i would be kinda libellous.
:D
To do what?
*it.
I agree. Silverstone weren't budging so he took the first alternative to come along... since the last one (Brands Hatch)..
Question, who's next?
Say we don't like him. It didn't work with Max, this should go down a storm.
:)
bernie cannot have another 17 years in him?
There's no other existing track so the next thing to do is fleece someone who wants to make a street race in London or Manchester.
I am pretty sure he knows that he is not popular
but maybe 10....
He tried the London street race the last time Silverstone's contract was due fro renewal
Am amazed he's still there, still sure he is some sort of evil genius (or the real life Master) who just keeps plugging away, getting money.
he'll be 90!
I think he is planning on retiring and that is why the contract is so long. I expect to see more circuits get long contracts in the near future. Maybe the Nurburging next.
ahh yeah, I remember the maps in Autosport.. their own speculative ones, mind you..
We said that 17 years ago. He's an android.
the wonders of medicine ;-)
okay maybe not that long, but certainly in '99 or so there was talk of who to bring in next..
And he was in the SAS. Good Luck, he could probably beat you up with his Thumb like Sean Connery in the Presidio :D
But we blame him for everything else!
Given the way his grasp on reality it was probably the airline he was with
scott's gone awfully quiet...
Hah! :-)
I'm watching TV.
He thinks he's going to Valhalla so he can take all his money with him!
...
Oh gawd, erm Mr Gillett I meant nothing of bad will. You did the best darn job you could sir. *Bows*
Oh
I'd like to retract that last statement.
Probably. SAS the airline is also bankrupt and run on false promises! :D
I heard Gillett was going to be at ASI because he as going to sign the deposit cheque for the rights to the Azerbaijani grand prix
:D
Haha.
Seriously though, they are supposed to be Scandinavia's national carrier and they are worse than EasyJet, who are supposed to be a budget airline!
I have a colleague from there. Nice guy, never heard of Grand Prix. Perfect - Bernie, sign 'em up!!!
Worked for Bahrain.
Easyjet aren't too bad for what you get... Ryanair.. now they are bad.
ryanair let me fly to ireland for 1p.
no-one has yet been able to get me there cheaper.
err.... how one earth?....
spelling fail :(
dunno. that's what they charged me. cost a fiver to get home again though.
Can I fly around for a penny please? Life is too expensive.
I can't even get to the centre of Newcastle without it costing tons of money.
still not a bad price though ;)
Speaking of ASI, the main historical display is supposed to be to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the WRC. I hope to god there's some Group B cars on display. If they have an Audi Quattro there, I will be forever happy :P
A fiver is less than a bus to Carlisle from here....
to defend easyjet. i got to spain and back for £23. nice, until you compare it to a penny.
I'd suggest meeting Mr Gillett early on in the morning then.
When I spent a while in Dundee I used them once, it was really convenient going into Bournemouth for practically no money but I had to drive to the opposite coast of Scotland to get to Prestwick to take the flight. Not that it was a bad drive (stunning actually), just Edinburgh would've been easier.
Then there's the cramming in like sardines, the poor condition of the plane, absolutely everything being charged for..
Another time I went with EasyJet via Bristol, that was pretty good and FlyBe from Southampton was on par albeit with not as good planes. Okay so they charged for things too but it was much nicer atmosphere and the people were much friendlier on both. The best was BA from Southampton, little jet thing but they looked after you. could only afford that once. This is making me realise, I took a lot of flights in 10 months.
:D
£23!!! a day out in london costs more than that! maybe flying all round the world taking photos wont be as expensive as i think ;)
I like EasyJet. Ryanair is a bit 'Skybus' but you get what you pay for and as long as they are on time with my luggage I couldn't care less!
Word of warning, they've cottoned on to when the races are ;-)
Of course if you could spend an extra day before/after, it suddenly becomes cheap again.
haven't been anywhere for a while, but i once flew an air lingus flight and i was the only person on board not employed by the airline.
i think there may have been some kind of downturn happening. i'd imagine it's not as cheap now.
And don't forget, Abu Dhabi is also a race. So that is pretty much throwing all that saved money, down the drain.
bad times :(
true!
OK, let me rephrase my statement:
canada is going to be pricey if you're paying for the race in hotel taxes.
better.
2009 Review clips sent - have you done yours yet!
that gavin, he's a legend.
Yeah. I'm telling ya, RGesque needs to be redefined.
Yep, sent mine. All 24 minutes of it. Yes - 24 minutes.
#Iblamemyrantontoyota
Flights are only cheap if you're flexible about where you go. If you have specific destinations and dates in mind, oddly it's not all that cheap after all....
true.
Suddenly my 7 minutes of unplanned randomly babbling on seems miniature!
You say 24, I raise you 29.
All are welcome. If everyone's was half an hour, I'd never get it done :)
wow.
But that only applies to F1 so you could get a cheap flight to an F3 event in France or Spain
I sort of went all Oscars at the end.
...
*opens Audacity*
"Hello, Scott again. So, RG thinks he can submit a longer review than me? Well..."
I impressed myself, the TV didn't distract me or get in the background this time.
true...
At around 7-8 minutes for my two files, it's all about quality over quantity for me ;)
You cried?
He thanked his family?
:( Can I win the lottery now please? :(
Did my own awards.
I may have said Algusuari quite a few times.
where you planning to go?
i haven't managed to say that once this year.
...at least not correctly.
have to go. writing a project to apply for a position in Argentina's national research system. see you!
3 guesses?
later guille.
see you :)
Mine was a quick look at the season followed by a look at each team and then a look forward to 2010.
see ya!
I can't believe you can't say Algusuari, Algusuari is so awesome is Aluguersari.
See ya guille.
Then you need to learn to drive from the passenger seat to get to the track
Night guys :)
Hiya
see you.
Bye Guille. Good luck with the project
nowhere at that price....
hi jackie.
evening
I went race by race, little recap at the end.
Bye Gavin, hey jackie.
I'm a happy bunny .. that site has taken down all our articles they nicked
See, yours sounds really organised and good. Mine is honestly a babbling mess of words that, upon listening back, convinced myself that I was drunk whilst recording. Should be fun though I suppose :P
bye!
Bye Gavin .. Hi RG
Bye Gavin
Hi Jackie
aha!
go jackie!!
Mav wrote to then to say they didnt have permission .. was surprised they did it though
wooooo.
Yay :)
Go Mav actually .. wasn't me at all
hehe.
what a glamorous life i hope to lead ;)
hey
It was funny yesterday as we had put a no copying without written permission on the bottom of the last blog and they posted that too
Unbelievable
It seems they just have the bbc Benson blog and F1 Minute as their "sources" now
So anything exciting happening here? (well I know it's always exciting here) .. I mean anything extra special
drivers wife?
I was going to read from a script, but decided to just talk and see where I could go with it. Amazingly I didn't make as many mistakes as I thought I would.
hahahaha naaah.. photography is the only way forward... expensive flights, left hand drive cars and everything ;)
Yes, left hand. On the PROPER side of the car!
;)
am only just used to right hand drive cars :P
That doesn't seem to be very glamourous.... They seem to be easily left behind.
Yeah, I know. If I had to drive a right hand manual car I'd miss shifts constantly.
grid girl?
Hahah yeah Lou, forget photography!! You can hold a flagpole.
f1 isn't that glamourous is it :(
I predict that Mrs. C is beating the **** out of Mr. C right now.
and get sunstroke/ burnt/very wet/cold in the process? humph... i'd rather do something productive like photography :P
I just had a look on my audio recording and my rant on Toyota was about 2 and half minutes long :D
why? we like fosters girls, and they are quite glamourous.
nope.. but i'm hoping it's as awesome as i think it is....
It is the wrong side of the car
could be a mole... standing there on the grid with the pole thing, with all those people walking around as if you aren't there.. could pick up lots of info..
What's the point of them?
You wouldn't. After a few minutes you just do it
it is the correct side of the car.
if you're going that route. what's the point of going around circles ever sunday?
A few minutes?? I spent a whole day reaching for the gear stick and punching the door....
They hold the numbers so that drivers know where to stop on the grid and they advertise the sponsors
Ah yes. I think there would be more room for advertising if they had more clothes on.
It's weird to sit on he left side of the car. You have a dor against your left shoulder instead of having room and your right side feels exposed without having a lumo if metal gainst it.
I have switched between left and right hand drive quite a few times and rarely had a problem after the irst few minutes
But there would be fewer people looking at them
I can do it. I obviously don't pay a lot of attention when I drive though. I just instinctively want to change gear and my left hand reaches out. Right into the door.....
Left foot braking and heel and toe'ing kinda mess with me, too, but I'm working on that!
I'm driving an automatic right now while my car (a manual) is in the shop. My left foot feels awfully lonely and is always looking for the clutch.
Do the peddles swap?? I hadn't thought about it....
That just takes practise and you need to do it all the time. Left foot braking is risky though
I don't think so. l - r it's: clutch - brake - accelerator. I've heard the Top Gear folks talk about left foot braking so I'm pretty sure the layout is the same.
Why would you want to brake with your right foot then?
Left even....
In a racing car to help try and balance the car better, I think.
I only ever had one automatic car. I decided I wanted to see if I could live with one. I got stuck twice in snow with it which answered my question because I never get stuck. When I switched back to a manual I was OK most of the time but if I was on a motorway for a while I kept stalling at the exit because I forgot about the clutch
No
you want to try and keep the engine revs within a certain range. Or something.
RIght but it's not to do with driving on the wrong side of the car/road?
It comes from rallying and is now used in racing. When I had an automatic I used one foot on each pedal just like karting. Occasionally I will left foot brake if I know I am not going to change gear before a corner and I am in a hurry because it is faster but in a manual car you have to find a way to program your brain to know which foot your are going to brake with at any time or there is the possibility of big problems
oh, no, nothing to do with that. it's all about racing (which I do _NOT_ do on the street, or at all right now, but I want too)
No. The pedals are always in the same place unless you get into some really old cars when you can have the accelerator in the middle or even the accelerator and brake stacked vertically
Okay. I was thinking they must be or I'd have smacked into a wall....
What you have to remember is if you put the clutch on the floor and the engine is doing 8000 revs then its not the clutch its the accelerator.
Yeah you're really talking to the wrong girl here.... 8000 revs = LOUD?
In that case you will spot the subtle clue if you get the pedals mixed up.
Can't remember if I have said this, Mr Walk n Talk himself Jake Humprhey is on Fighting Talk this Saturday.
ooh, did i miss this news?
Danica Patrick has announced she will run a partial NASCAR Nationwide Series season in 2010
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/80490
Hi Christine and Mr C,
I tried to post this yesterday and I dont know what happened (my 6 year old computer or user error more likely!).
I was wondering if you have any plans to catch up with Joe before Christmas? I know he's away at the moment but thought it might be good to catch up to discuss the end of the season review edition of GP+ (When it is published), the recent withdrawal of Toyota, Merc buying Brawn and the Silverstone deal.
Also thought it might be good to listen to what Joe thought of the motorsport forum.
Keep up the good work
Kris
That was announced a few weeks ago. She is doing NASCAR events that don't clash with the Indy races
I saw your comment yesterday
got it and replied kris: http://sidepodcast.com/2009/12/07/f1-debrief-there-must-be-disco/#comment-619273
it was?
Technically it was only announced today - the IndyCar stuff was announced a few weeks ago. But on that day, the webmaster of her official fan site put up a pic of her in her NASCAR race suit - it is identical to her IndyCar suit but with a 'Nationwide Series' and Chevy logo
oops. admin fail :)
Needless to say within ten minutes it had been replaced but Twitterers were paying attention ;-)
how #mfc is this?

MFC and a mention of gaff. Very SPC
morning all. I got up at 6.30 today and was wide awake. It was a new and scary feeling.
:)
:-)
blimey. care to share how?
christine isn't even asleep yet?
Hi.
see!
Take pills and go straight back to bed before it becomes a habit
*mind melts*
Hello again. Resting the brain for the night, have spent 10 hours doing VB work

got it and replied kris: http://sidepod...disco/#comment-619273
Thanks very much Mr C - sorry for the duplicate post. At this rate there is a danger that technology could be passing me by!!
Sounds like Joe is just as busy during the off season as he is during it.
Thanks again
Kris
aww. how's it look?
the trick was falling asleep watching tv at 8.30 last night while fully clothed, coat and boots and all. Then I woke up at 10 and went 'blurgh sleepy' put my pjs on and went back to sleep.
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/12/08/forums-in-monte-carlo-and-orlando/
...yup :)
Making my way there. Just a few bugs to iron out with search for items and getting a login to work with a text file properly but by the end of the week I will have my sanity back :)
Evening all.
Ran in to Chairman Allen on the way back from dinner (which was very nice, and all the better for being on Lord H's tab). Apparently Alex Tai has cried off but Gerard Lopez is going to be her tomorrow. In fact, JA was off to meet him as we spoke. La-di-dah.
Dinner was very illustrative, in that there were lots of F1 people there trying to crawl up backsides in order to secure deals – eg a certain photo agency entertaining a certain circuit boss. Also, that sinister-looking goatee'd bloke (whose name I forget, but is always ushering drivers up to the podium post-race) was dining with some fellow from Sepang.
Visual Basic?
Yus.
you put login details in a text file? are you hoping for a job at mediatemple?
I'm sorry
Ah. Collapsing with tiredness isn't good.
And so it is! In Ian's defence, he was probably typing on his BlackBerry - and anyway, he does sales and I do words!
spooky!
hehe. what a title :) :)
Eh? How did that blockquote strangeness happen?
Question on celebrity Eggheads
The Honda F1 team was renamed what in 2009?
Red Bull apparently is the wrong answer {Comment #502}
I think I know why there are so many F1 questions on Eggheads - most of the time, the people asked get it wrong. I remember one episode a few weeks back where the following exchange happened:
Question: Which team did Giancarlo Fisichella drive for at the start of 2008? (The offered choices were Force India, Toyota and Toro Rosso)
Response (paraphrased): Er... ...I don't know, but... [pause] ...I'll go with Toyota because it finishes with the same letter (I think the contestant did some further justification of this line of thinking but I was laughing too hard to hear)
Correct Answer: Force India
There was also the occasion a few weeks back when the question "Which country has won 9 F1 World Championships?". The contestant answered "Brazil", whereupon I started shouting at the TV. Not, you note, because I'd worked out that Brazil wasn't the answer, but because the only plausible-looking answer was the UK... ...and thanks to an unfortunate delay between filming and screening, Jenson Button had just taken the number of F1 World Championships the UK had won to ten.
if i was a male i would make it my life goal to be called a 'sinister looking goatee'd bloke'
Ah evening, was just reading your blog.
Monaco seems to be where the deals are done..
fixed.
It's easy for a male to grow a goatee... now, a woman with a sinister looking goatee, that'd be something special! :D
why let a little thing like gender get in the way? :P you just need to go to F1 themed fancy dress
Emily can come on saturday! :D yay!! Mum is no happy i wont be in london on my own so i can come too! *changes wiki page*..
woot! :)
yay!
Could start a circus...
seconded.
(adds extra box or two of wine to list)
If you drive an automatic, you should be left foot braking. It is much safer after the initial awkwardness.
It is a great skill to have in a racecar, especially on dirt, but it has saved me on the road as well because my foot was already hovering over the brake pedal ( not that you leave it there all the time )
boo, gotta go to bed. Soo yeah, night all. lotsa love.
:D hehehe ;)
Quick question for the guys coming. What do you think I should do?
A) Drive to Alex's
B) Get Public Transport
A) takes an hour and a half less time at least. B) means I can drink.
All BBC quiz shows have had loads of F1 questions since the Beeb got the races back
oh i rang my mum last night and told her of my war grave investigation and she said the very first thing my nana said when she told her i was going to europe was "i wonder if she will go visit lauries grave in italy" so we must be working on the same wavelength. Spooky.
goodnight..
night
Can't think why (sarcastic)
depends what you are doing on sunday? ;)
That should liven things up
night chap.
Well at the moment I'm staying at my parents overnight, then getting home on Sunday
I see Steven is suggesting live streaming, that should make it much more fun.
#nothere.
does live streaming mean that the chances of me being able to steal a mac are smaller? not that i would ever steal anyone's macbook.... *whistles*...
I think you may want to drink. I gather most others will be.. And it depends what parking is like in the area, being That London I'd guess not good.
I was weighing what I'd do if I'd go :-) I'd like to but it depends on something...
i think i may need more clues :(
#sidepodspace
Just catching up on the Sky at Night on the iplayer. Some of you will remember we watched a spacecraft impact the moon to throw up a huge debris cloud that turned out to b a mjaor disappointment. Well they have analysed the data now and they say that the following space craft detected 24 gallons of water which is a huge amount.
Ok, looks like public transport then. Better stock up on podcasts for my ipod...
why would you want a melted, wine stained mac with a missing question mark?
am willing to be it's still better than my stupid acer laptop...
Bassano is organising live streaming of Giggles baking.
why am i unable to type/spell today :(
I was looking at driving because I prefer it, and my portable devices are old and have no battery life any more.. but there's the fuel and parking costs..
I think she would prefer Alex's mac which has all its faculties
He is?
He said he was and of course I encouraged him. I think he should stir the baking mixture with his orange drill
wow!
*remembers to pack eeepc*
South of the Upper Norwood 'triangle' parking isn't so bad. You could stick your car on Mowbray Road – never full, and I didn't have any crime trouble in over four years there.
Only prob is that you'll have to walk up a big hill to get to Andronov Manor...
Christine should take her mac mini for balance
I cocked up the blockquote again...
it's a bit small to lean on?
:D:D
one for each foot to stop them jiggling?
Mst have been good wine tonight in Monaco
Anyway, my advice was aimed at Pat and Chris. Off to bed now because it's another early start in the morning. Wouldn't want to miss Chairman Allen's opening address...
Thanks Stuart. Night!
Cheers.
:)
good night sir.
Night Stuart
At the risk of wrecking the site again, yes it was.
So yeah, the other day I was 60-40 against going. Now I am 70-30 in favour but need a big favour.... can I have somewhere to sleep please? :-)
It worked
You say 24, I raise you 29. {Comment #695}
I'll tell you what I'll raise you to when my computer figures out that one of the two files it has been sent is in fact a sound file (luckily it was the smaller one)...
unfortunately, i've already bagged the passenger seat.
can offer you some boot space, but i can't promise you'll end up anywhere near your intended destination?
:D
my laptop is an embarrassment most of the time... and i refuse to take it with me anywhere other than school on the odd occasion.
Speaking of school i ventured into the IT offices to talk to a technician about some requests made by students about macbooks and why they couldn't be connected to the network. The IT guy almost shouted at me that it wasn't possible to connect Macbooks to the WIFI at school because they needed to set up a different network for them and it was very complicated and was a waste of time...after that i stopped listening to the rantings and once he finished i scuttled back to the common room... school IT technicians are scary...
it confused me because i didn't think there would be a difference?
have fun! night
Not all of us! Just him...
i wonder if there is somewhere in london i could hire someone to be me for the night so i can attend the party. I bet there is.
there isn't.
not at all. zero. nothing.
Well, ya know Ross Kemp can fit in the boot of the Renault Twingo quite comfortably...
i never see them leave the offices apart from going home.. or helping a teacher with something... they always seem so grumpy at school....
I think it depends on the school. The one I'm doing placement at we're all happy and friendly.
Sounds just like the lab technicians when I was at school. The only thing that interested them was getting through the day without doing any work.
Don't let people that shout at you scare you or put you off. They do not have the right to shout at you and if he does it again report him.
Cheers, but I'm not sure spare tyres, even the half ones, are all that comfy! Still, magical mystery tour,hm...
*pauses*.... this makes no sense to me. Most of the student (especially the borders) have macbooks but aren't allowed to connect them to the network... so they've bought PC's too (the boarding students that is).. seems like such a waste..
One of my co-workers introduced me to her husband as "our IT guy". Boy was I ********.
I'm a ticked off systems engineer, there's a difference! :D
this makes me super angry. Grrrrrr!
Heh, I know a couple and they are deliberately scary/evasive :-)
language!
sorry, upset.
See, I'm still upset about it :)
Even a home wifi wouldn't matter. Dad has a desktop PC and my stepmum's Mac laptop running off the same wifi.
Why do I feel I'm on the losing side of this conversation?
i wont be going near the IT offices in a hurry again ;) i'll talk to the deputy head (who gives me all my prefect work) in my next meeting with her and she can bring it up with the headmaster or relevant people :)
IT guys are awesome
#nothere
Do you know his name?
Ta! :)
nope.. i know him as the tall IT technician :)
*tall and grumpy
Eurgh IT technicians :S
We have that problem at work. There are 3 tall, thin IT technicians. It's great fun trying to work out who had spoken to the pupil in the past!
One of the guys I know doesn't accept teachers sending students on errands to pick up ink cartridges and insists on being sent an email..
i didn't know him as grumpy till today... although i did once the other guy in boots getting a meal deal and he looked super grumpy lol :)
This reminds me a lot of my experiences....
I mainly have one large issue with my printer at work!!
who can be grumpy at a boots meal deal i ask ya?
Hit it. It might not help, but it makes you feel a lot better!
grrrr... if I start talking about printers, I'll be banned from here forever.
All BBC quiz shows have had loads of F1 questions since the Beeb got the races back {Comment #840}
That's true, but it's almost as if competitors switch their brains off when they hear such a question, to an extent I don't see them doing with other questions...
don't tell me... it picks on you?
:D
hehe i know! :P at school going to boots for lunch is a luxury ;)
The first company to make a good reliable printer with ink that doesn't cost more than gold will own the world
See, now what your school needs...
:P
until they go bankrupt because they aren't selling replacement printers and the ink supplies don't make enough margin to support themselves..
no we don't!.. :P
There's a simple answer - get a laser printer. Price per page is much cheaper.
curse this realist accountancy brain
My friends uni in Guildford has a Subway and a Starbucks! No Greggs unfortunatly...
I think because it is a new subject to them. Particulalry on Eggheads you will hear them talk about the subjects that they read up on because they come up all the time in quizzes. So when a brand new subject to them comes up they have no backgrounf info
But more parts to go wrong
we have a cafe in our school.. it's called 'the atrium' but it's so expensive and far far away from the common room...
:D
And with that I really need to go. Night all.
There has to be more margin in printer ink catridges than anything else on the planet
aww night Lukeh.
night!
night lukeh.
Night!
stop talking about school when you're outside of school. i'm poking you through the internet.
:P
It loves me too much!!!
It was broken, we sent it away for repair. The IT peoples said it was too badly broken and sent us a new one. This one was rrrrrrubbish and broke. We sent it off and were sent back the original useless printer we had originally......
I now blame the IT department every time I can't go home on time because my end of night paperwork won't print sensibly!!
:-D
oh.
awesome!!
:D
I'm too scared to send it off again though.... Goodness only knows what hunk of junk I'd get back!
O.O you're on spc from your house! you're not in the next room or anything! .... this feels odd...
There is. HP for example are kept going by their printer ink revenue.
To be fair to them though, the process of ink production is pretty involved - you have to create an ink that won't dry in the cartridge but will dry at an acceptable speed when sprayed onto paper. WIthout clogging the cartridge head.
The next stage of sidepodadiction?
i know. i'm shocked too. maybe you could buy me more red bull tomorrow and we'll speak no more of this.
Next stage: get interested in F1. although that hasn't stopped Alison.
i think so ;)
can i go home yet? Need to do that shopping i put off on sunday. #shoppingfortripin8monthstime
as much as i'd love to hang out with you lovely lot, i fear i'm going to have to go develop something new and semi-exciting.
okay, not exciting. but still... back in three or four hours. please don't do anything fun without me, and apologies if the scheduler takes aaaages to post the daily.
xxx
blog about it
see ya..
Perhaps, but the toner keeps longer and doesn't dry up.
It's still cheaper per page and parts now pretty reliable. For simple printing, especially monochrome, then laser is the answer.
hellooooo
night Mr C
tomorrow = chocka day.. maybe if i'm alive by 4pm ;) or you can stick around here and continue on the ladder of sidepodaddiction ;)
Hardly rocket science and doesn't come close to justifying the astronomical cost. Printer ink costs more than petrol or whisky or any other liquid you can name
cant blog. At work.
see ya mr c! have fun developing things...
Don't be shocked it happens to us all
good point :D
comment it and aggregate into a post later?
#amgone
do we need to shoo you?
Shoo!
(love saying that!)
The last I heard you had about 5 hours to get dressed and go shopping on Sunday. How did you not make it?
cant blog. Procrastinating.
Have fun
:D
i didnt make it because i decided a weekend before christmas would be too full of people at the shops. Today i finish work at 330 which sounds like a much better time to me.
Actually it is quite tricky, as a very informative talk I attended a couple of years ago explained. Like drug companies, the big manufacturers spend millions developing their product and then charge a fortune for the product to recoup their costs, then make a massive profit. I'm not defending their methods, just saying it's not that easy.
Also, rocket science is relatively trivial once you have mastered the basics of control theory.
Yeah, it's simplistic to suggest that costs are restricted to production costs. There's huge behind the scenes costs associated with any industry like this. Maybe they don't conduct themselves ideally but that's their business model and they need to stick to it in order to produce funds for development.
I refuse to believe that making a liquid a certain colour and making it dry in a certain time is difficult. They have been making black computer ink for decades so the investment on development has been recouped many times over. All they have to do is make modifications to cope with the new delivery methods. There is no justification for moulded plastic with a spoonful of ink costing more than a couple of pounds.
hehe she'd probably be the last one to admit it but emily knows a bit about f1 from my constant rantings about it... besides as two of the only Heikki fans Amy and Emily should stick together ;)
#sorryheikki
If the true costs were indeed so low, why isn't there at least one rebellious retailer out selling at close to cost price?
I think there are huge innovations to be made. Especially regarding people wanting to print photos at home. I'm sure inks need to be adapted greatly to give decent results.
The problem is the manufacturers not the retailers.
Look at your mobile phone. Ten years ago it made phone calls and texted. Now it has hundreds of functions and the price has not gone up. Printer cartridges and ink have been through minor changes and the price has gone up instead of down. We are being ripped off.
oi ;) don't be hating. am off to sleep, and am now feeling vaguely annoyed about how expensive printer ink is.
night spc. :)
Night Emily
You try creating a liquid that does everything that printer ink does, including colour consistency, drying time, anti-clogging etc. It's not as easy as you'd think.
hehe ;)
night Em! (the addiction begins here :) )
Fair enough. I don't even own a printer. I just know that from my experience with other industries commonly identified as "overpriced" there are costs to be covered that people would never even have dreamed about....
thats a point, is she on the addiction page yet?
*evil laugh*
Night!
nope... feel free to add her to it though ;)
does she have a wiki page?
unfinished, but yes
she's a fish apparently.
I think it's known as the razor blade business model.
There are alternatives - continuous ink systems for example. I still maintain that a laser is better for most general printing requirements.
yep.. although she used my log in to complete it ;)
Look at the price of everything else in any shop you go into. The prices are all dropping like stones. You can get a laptop for £300 that will massively out perform computers costing 10 times as much ten years ago. You can buy any product that needed technical development cheaper today and get massively more functionality from it than the more expensive version ten years ago except for printer cartridges. The cartridges are moulded plastic and I have worked on developing spray applications similar to ink jets. The technical part costs nothing and the development cost is a few pence per cartridge maximum. Look at the number of cartridges sold and work out how much money is made from the ink. There is no possible way you can justify $1 per cartridge in ink developmnet costs. No possible way. The idea that cartridges cost what they do is obscene. They are a total rip off.
Laptop technology has many many applications and development costs are widely spread between them. Ink just prints....
ooh Andy dont get me started on the price of razor blades!
buy an electric shaver?
*runs*
okay, time for me to get some sleep too. i've got such a busy day at school again tomorrow :(
night all! xx
night lou
Just a quick example
A plain black cartridge online from PC World costs £13.45. Say the cartridge with no ink would have a sale price of £5 which is fantasy because 50p would be closer. That means the ink would sell for £8.45. There is 5ml(one teaspoonful) of ink in the catridge so the ink sells for £1690 per litre. That is insane.
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/284022
Night Lou
Just don't shave?
When I was growing my moustache I used the cheapest razors I could find. Normally I don't bother, using a beard trimmer is much better for my skin.
Strangely, razors marketed at women are usually more expensive than those aimed at men which I think is super ridiculous....
Andy didnt...for a whole month ;)
Women are prepared to pay more. Simple as that
i only shave as a backup for those times i have been too lazy to wax which means a pack of blades lasts me forever but i still hate paying $20ish for a 4 pack!
I would just buy mens ones....
Not totally, remember that the manufacturers have sold you the printer at or below cost, so they have to make some money back on that as well. I do agree that the costs are too high though.
I think it's interesting that Kodak have taken a different approach - their new inkjet system has much lower running costs, but you pay a bit more for the printer up front.
They cannot justify £1690 per litre regardless how it is presented. This is something they make in industrial quantities like any other complex liquid. I worked with a company that was looking at making air fresheners using the same technology as an ink jet with a follow on process added. The final product was going to sell for less than £3 including battery.
Printers cost nothing to make. I took several apart to try to make a product I was developing and there is nothing in them that is remotely expensive to make or develop.
Actually I shaved more last month than I have for years. Maintaining the Mo was quite time consuming. Now I'm back to facial hair again.
ah yes it was Movember, not no shave November
Evening all, Wednesday's late
Evening. OMG It's midnight
I hate shaving too
I have to go from crown to adam's apple so a sharp blade is more essential and doesn't last as long either :(

Woah where's your clapper??
exactly!
I 'm trying the week without it

Actually, it's more of one of these
Ah I see.... You look a bit bare without it.
if i was a dude i would be so hairy. Shaving every day is such an effort but i bet waxing your face would HURT
= Bad images
I had an ex who wanted to wax my head
I never relented
Hahaha hair removal sucks. I think we should all decide just not to bother anymore.
And look like Nick Heidfeld, no ta
That's crazy.... Why?
I'm not sure it's just the hair that defines how he looks, he has other features too....
Ouch. Fortunately I am not so hairy so I can get away with shaving a couple of times a week without looking scruffy. Wish the hair on my head grew so slowly though.
I Mach 3 my head and she liked my head smoother for longer
You should have dumped her immediately
I let her wax my back a couple of times. [Which was never particularly hairy] Big mistake also
More than once?
We can't start Wednesday on the topic of head waxing!
Doesnt Wax = Pain?
2 or 3, I think
It's relative but it's not what I'd call pleasant
It's not too bad to be honest. You get used to it.
Yeah but women do it lots usually...therefore you're opinion dosent count :P
Bassano I feel I should warn you about my views on my printer before you part with yours even though it doesn't matter. I just know I'll get to work and it'll be there again...
It even sends you back in time!
