Monday has arrived, and with it brings Robert Kubica's birthday. The Polish driver turns 25 years old today, and I hope he's throwing a big party to celebrate his drive at Renault. Oh wait, that might not be secure as he hopes. Hmm. We might be finding more out about that today, watch for breakout threads.

  • We seem to be only producing F1 Debrief episodes fortnightly at the moment, but it's working very well. Yesterday's was a bit of a cracker, if we do say so ourselves. You can wait for the edited version which should be along later today, but I do recommend checking out the replay of the live show.
  • We have finally drawn a line under our Sidepodscience Shell V-Power Challenge, after many months. Back then, we tested out the premium fuel in our cars and tried to talk about the science behind it, but now we have the answers from an actual Shell expert. If you haven't already, head on over to our interview with David Wood from Shell for some real science.
  • My final piece of self promotion will be for Mr C's Jerez testing round-up. We tried a bit of an experiment this time round, opening up a thread for each day of the test, and Mr C concludes how this went, plus has a quick sum up of what the drivers got up to.

That should do it for now. Don't forget it is Must Comment Monday this week - although I can't talk as I have yet to find time to sit down and do it proper. I do try and comment as I go, though, and you should try it too. I'll see you in the comments.

Booo I posted that in yesterday.... I don't think petrol stations are open at this time either. We have some 24 hour fuel places to put your credit card in, I'm not sure they have revels dispensers....

24 hour supermarket, airport, motorway services?

24 hour supermarket, airport, motorway services?

That's what I'm saying... It's Sunday night, nothing opens until 8am. I live very far from an airport or a motorway I'm afraid :(

If it was another day I could go to Tesco or Asda though. It's 12 miles but I'd probably do it right now.... I want them super bad.

There are several 24 hour supermarkets within 10 minutes drive for me and a stack of petrol stations that open 24 hours. I hate Revels though so they are all wasted on me

Yeah, it's the law. If you're over a certain square footage, you're only allowed to be open until 4pm on a Sunday or 5pm if you open later in the morning.

Irvine. Put it in the search and it gives you the opening hours

Yes. In England they're all like that.... They open from 8am on a Monday right through until some time on Saturday night. They then open 10-4 on Sunday.

  • Alison07/12/2009 at 00:57

Ah I didn't realise you lived in Scotland. For some reason I had it in my head you lived in England at the moment. I now have no idea why I thought this....

Yeah they changed the law in Scotland. They're allowed to be open right through.

There are some old trading laws which prevent it from being so.

I think Sunday trade should be banned, and if you're in a job where you have to be open 7 days (like police etc) then you cant work more than 1 sunday a month. Family should come first

Okay wow. That's kinda crazy thinking in my world. I work Sundays regularly. I don't find it to be a great hardship. Sunday's a rubbish day for doing things. I'd rather get one of my working days out the road....

Yeah well working an extra day is never going to be a winner. If it became part of your routine, I'm sure you wouldn't mind it.

  • Jeremy07/12/2009 at 01:06

What if you work 6 days a week and Sunday is the only day you can get anything done?

No working 6 days a week either!

PS. For most of my life, I have worked Sundays. I now have Sunday and Monday off. I keep getting confused by the number of people everywhere when I do stuff on a Sunday :-)

  • Pat W07/12/2009 at 01:07

Yeah well working an extra day is never going to be a winner. If it became part of your routine, I'm sure you wouldn't mind it.

Oh I would. It was warehouse work.

  • Alison07/12/2009 at 01:08

No working 6 days a week either!

Right but I don't see why because you don't like working a Sunday, you think me enjoying my routine should be illegal?

Also what if you need money? No overtime or saving up flexitime to fund a holiday?

I'm hoping the old Farve shows himself...an interception machine. I'm also a Bucs fan and when the Bucs played the Packers I could count on at least 3 interceptions from him. So I hope the Cardinal DB's are ready

I'd include Frentzen and Wendlinger in that list. Heck, I'd put Brundle and Verstappen in for good measure.

  • Journeyer07/12/2009 at 05:37

    Not this again.

Other than the headline, JA includes an aside on Gerard Lopez, who JA likens to Chad Hurley. JA makes it sound like a good thing, but given where USF1 is right now (i.e. we have no idea), that may not exactly be the most favorable of comparisons.

    Morning Jeremy.

There seems to be a lot of negative comments about this book... I have got to March and I must say that I am enjoying the retrospective so far ... what I like about it is that with hindsight, a lot of things were said in F1 that turned out to be completely false... ;)

  • Journeyer07/12/2009 at 07:04

Well it's more amusing than surprising, TBH.

For example, in March all the FOTA teams had signed an agreement to stay in the sport until 2012... that accord got broken pretty quickly! :D

  • Journeyer07/12/2009 at 07:09

For example, in March all the FOTA teams had signed an agreement to stay in the sport until 2012... that accord got broken pretty quickly! :D

Haha! Very true. That said, I do wonder - if the breakaway did push through, would it have made them more or less likely to leave?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/12/2009 at 07:10

I think those that left would still have if it broke away - they just needed the right excuse...

  • Journeyer07/12/2009 at 07:21

I think those that left would still have if it broke away - they just needed the right excuse...

And that could've ended up being even more humiliating - perhaps this is the victory over LDM that got away from Max? LDM must be the only enemy Max never got to defeat in public.

i've been trying to work out where I recognise the music at the beginning is from. I'm starting to think it's something like Starbucks jazz music.

    God bless Apple Loops.

Indeed... the weirdest thing is Adam and Joe because they turn so many of them into songs and things so it seems much more like they "own" the loop. Very strange. They get people writing in to complain that they've ripped off things from other shows and also reporting other people ripping them off. Crazy.

I do - I believe it starts Wednesday. Honestly, I don't know what's going to happen, but every precaution seems to have been taken, including our office, as we work in an industry that may be unpopular with these types.

Personally I am familiar with it because I had to deal with this directly in my old job, but thats a story for another time ;)

    http://www.spagrandprix.com/

  • me07/12/2009 at 11:43

What kind of tickets did we have?

    bronze terrace.

  • Christine07/12/2009 at 11:44

    bronze terrace.

It was about £300 we paid, so the early bird price is cheaper, the regular price not so much.

  • me07/12/2009 at 11:47

    http://www.spagrandprix.com/

depends what you're comparing, but spa's top price is higher than silverstone's.

£448 for "weekend gold plus" in spa

£399 for "club silverstone" (which last time featured private loos and a brass band)

  • RCC07/12/2009 at 11:47

Ok in 2008 I paid £110 for 3 day pit straight terrace ticket! totally worth it

2009: £169 for 3 day luffield terrace ticket

So this year i've decided i don't want to fight strangers at 7am trying to find a spot for my chair and getting hassled by the marshalls even though i've PAID for a spot on the luffield terrace (terrible this year as people who'd paid were turned away due to lack of room. So though it i'd get a 'cheap' seat...

Even with the early booking discount it's £200!!

And of course friends wanna go so all has to be booked together

I feel backed into a corner...only chance i'll get to see the cars unless I got to Spa for the same price...Silverstone is only 8 miles for me :-(

  • Christine07/12/2009 at 11:49

depends what you're comparing, but spa's top price is higher than silverstone's.

Spa is much more expensive than I'd imagined.

  • RCC07/12/2009 at 11:49

I know many of you will sya GA is the way to go but i've done the terrace thing!! I was so annoyed seeing many of us literally arguing to get a space this year at 7am on the sunday yet the seats don't fill up until the parade lap...

I'd like to feel less like a 3rd class citizen even just for an hour

  • me07/12/2009 at 11:49

Spa is much more expensive than I'd imagined.

    it is.

the problem is the price of the euro.

  • Amy07/12/2009 at 11:52

the problem is the price of the euro.

I am having the exact opposite, the strong AU$ is making my holiday a lot more affordable than it would have been a year ago.

  • RCC07/12/2009 at 11:53

I was disgusted at the treatment of people this year..

Why should i and others who've PAID for a ticket/service be turned away from our choice of location because Silverstone didn't think people would be bringing fold up chairs...

I'm sorry but only an idiot expects us all to sit on unsheltered concrete for 6 hours before the race...2008 was awful due to weather but being my first year I didn't care really...although i caught an illness as a consequence of being wet and cold for hours...

    aw diddums

  • Christine07/12/2009 at 11:54

If noone buys tickets for next year they will have to drop them for the following 16 though...

Shame this wouldnt work in practice...

It could be cheaper to fly to turkey, stay in a hotel, buy tickets and watch the race there, and it could still be less popular than silverstone

  • Pat W07/12/2009 at 12:38

Miss the very thing I work each day for even though it's only 8 miles from my door and travel to Spa etc or just accept the cost and pay it the whole time trying to imagine Bernie being consumed by fire?

What about Germany or Hungary, any cheaper?

I guess some people won't make the tradeoff of money saving vs convenience.

In other news, I am trawling war graves sites to find out where my great uncle is buried because I thought it might be nice to pay a visit when I am in Europe, but he's at the complete opposite end of Italy to where I am going :(

That's very cool to know that. I have no idea about my relatives, although my Grandad from Italy told me that if they had a parade they would kick you up the bum if you didn't salute.

Also, Denmark was occupied, and my brother-in-law bought the Farmhouse that has been in his family since 1800. He found an old WW2 rifle and bayonet, and he wouldn't say much, but implied his Grandad may have been in the resistance!

apparently "The Sangro River War Cemetery lies in the Contrada Sentinelle in the Commune of Torino di Sangro, Province of Chieti"

which means nothing to me but google maps said its 4 hours from Rome :D

£448 for "weekend gold plus" in spa
£399 for "club silverstone" (which last time featured private loos and a brass band)

    that is surprising..

to be honest, that's how I know it as well. It is a bit out of the way and not much else over there to do at the same time. Abruzzo does have a really bice national park apparently, but it wasn't enough for me to head out there.

  • Nick in Dubai07/12/2009 at 13:07

or... maybe people just like racing?

I meant it isnt an event to whoch you can predict a price snap at, as there isnt an equivelent alternative... For example if you didnt like the hike in train fares you could, buy a car or take the bus.

For a lot of people, whilst they will wince at an increase in the cost of sporting tickets, but still buy a GP ticket or a season ticket to there team. because although their are alternatives, they don't appeal at the same level.

Its why so many millionaires buy football teams, they get to be famous, and they can hike up the costs so eventually everyone pays for them to do it.

that would require time off of work though? hardly the same as rocking up in a field on a sunday afternoon.

Possibly, but if you flew to turkey Thursday night and back on Sunday night would it be much different to driving to Silverstone on a Friday morning in time for FP1?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/12/2009 at 13:08

I'm a fan of US racing and its history, particularly on the Indycar side. If anyone else here likes it, I strongly recommend the Oil Pressure blog where I was just reading a history of the Unser family. These are very well written pieces.

This one is even better.. very revealing about the way racing is perceived in the southern US and how a NASCAR fan is completely different to an IndyCar fan...

the only European countries are UK, Germany, Austria and France. They should have a European store (in English) at least for the downloads.

  • Steven Roy07/12/2009 at 17:38

the only European countries are UK, Germany, Austria and France. They should have a European store (in English) at least for the downloads.

That doesn't make any sense. They should be able to do the whole EU without it being massively more complicated than doing a few countries. They are asking for competitors to just take the Spanish abd Italian markets for example. That must be close on 80-100 million people. That has to be worth a little bit of efort from Amazon.

Do you read the last.fm blog? I'm currently reading this ultra-cool thing here. Anything where they turn a graph into a mountain, and then make a 'war room' for a product launch, has to be good.. Interesting too.

we has no-one to fight anyhow.

That's not a problem. It's well know that Scottish people can start a fight with anyone and there are at least three of us here so we can start a fight with ourselves then when someone tries to break it up we all turn on them. Traditional Scottish Xmas and new year entertainment.

You can do some races on normal or reverse versions of the tracks, basically all the ovals to make the game sound like it has more tracks

what are you analysing? cinematography, choreography, otherographys?

  • RG07/12/2009 at 22:10

what are you analysing? cinematography, choreography, otherographys?

Everything about the video. Whats going on, why thats happening, why she is wearing what, why that effect is being used.

  • me07/12/2009 at 22:11

Everything about the video. Whats going on, why thats happening, why she is wearing what, why that effect is being used.

if you can figure out the "blowing beyonce to pieces, but she's still alive" bit, i'm all ears.

Yep, that's definitely exciting! Glad they really have given up on Donnington or nothing now.

    Sums up my view nicely

  • Jon Waldock07/12/2009 at 22:46

I suppose it might be because you expected it to happen?

Yeah i guess so. I'm happy for the Motorsport Industry, but from a race POV, i dont find silverstone's race that amazing unless it's wet

  • Andy Taylor07/12/2009 at 22:47

I suppose it might be because you expected it to happen?

Hi all. Good news from Silverstone. LPG and I are wondering if this was the intended outcome all along, just like BMW and Sauber. Did BMW deliberately not sign the Concorde Agreement to make the team worth less money? Did BMW know that Toyota were going to leave F1?

  • Pat W07/12/2009 at 22:48

im happy, but also not bothered. is this bad?

Sounds just about right to me. With me, I'm glad it is still there because it would have been a disaster for UK motorsport if it wasn't, but since it isn't a race I've ever felt a desire to attend, as a fan I'm not jumping for joy, just mildly pleased. Plus this has been dragging on for years.

  • Alison07/12/2009 at 22:49

Yeah i guess so. I'm happy for the Motorsport Industry, but from a race POV, i dont find silverstone's race that amazing unless it's wet

2008 was good times. If only I hadn't been looking all over for Michael Shumacher.....

  • lou07/12/2009 at 22:49

You knew it was going to happen. I told you months ago

i know... but it's nice that it's final and the fact i'll get at least another 17 chances to go to silverstone :)

  • Tom07/12/2009 at 22:50

It was more the absurdity of the announcement that Donnington were getting the Grand Prix from 2010 which annoyed me, just after Silverstone had been granted planning permission for circuit redevelopment, to bring it up to Bernie's modern standards.

  • lou07/12/2009 at 22:50

im happy, but also not bothered. is this bad?

i'm happy enough for you don't worry ;)

  • Steven Roy07/12/2009 at 22:50

2008 was good times. If only I hadn't been looking all over for Michael Shumacher.....

    Did you find him?

  • Lukeh07/12/2009 at 22:51

I'm just sad Bernie didn't consider my idea of a race in my street. We have better hospitality than Mr Gillett and only 2 holes in our road

  • Jon Waldock07/12/2009 at 22:52

Sounds just about right to me. With me, I'm glad it is still there because it would have been a disaster for UK motorsport if it wasn't, but since it isn't a race I've ever felt a desire to attend, as a fan I'm not jumping for joy, just mildly pleased. Plus this has been dragging on for years.

    That too.

I think the way I think about it is a) i won't believe it until it happens and b) how do i know that it's not going to be at silverstone for 17 years, and in my head i've already started to get myself more prepared for another stupid battle of wills. its stupid

  • RG07/12/2009 at 22:52

It was more the absurdity of the announcement that Donnington were getting the Grand Prix from 2010 which annoyed me, just after Silverstone had been granted planning permission for circuit redevelopment, to bring it up to Bernie's modern standards.

I liked Donington just for the fact it was closer to me. But not too close (ie Croft) so that it would be wrecked and I'd struggle for racing tracks again.

  • Alison07/12/2009 at 22:52

    Did you find him?

I think my dad gave up in the end and pointed out a random car.... I really have come on. I corrected him the other day. That was also Shumi related though, I wouldn't want you all to think I was obsessed....

  • me07/12/2009 at 22:52

Hi all. Good news from Silverstone. LPG and I are wondering if this was the intended outcome all along, just like BMW and Sauber. Did BMW deliberately not sign the Concorde Agreement to make the team worth less money? Did BMW know that Toyota were going to leave F1?

why would bmw want to devalue their team?

  • Jon Waldock07/12/2009 at 22:52

    ahahaha

Have been trying to work out the most effective way for me to get back into RC racing and my local club does oval and off road, but oval is alot cheaper...

I remarked this to my girlfriend and the first thing she said was...

    "oh. BORING"

    hehehehe

  • Kathi07/12/2009 at 22:53

I'm just sad Bernie didn't consider my idea of a race in my street. We have better hospitality than Mr Gillett and only 2 holes in our road

the rally Finland will have a in-the-city-special-special-stage. I'm still hoping it will go through my backyard.

  • RG07/12/2009 at 22:53

why would bmw want to devalue their team?

Hence the sale to QADBAK. I don't think they cared who got it, apart from Mario, as I keep saying, they sold it to the first team who had enough money.

  • Alison07/12/2009 at 22:54

    "oh. BORING"

Sounds like a suitable response to me.... I don't even know what you're talking about!

  • me07/12/2009 at 22:56

    http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/cimg4377-jpg

I used to race Competition Electric 10th Scale Touring Cars, was amazingly good fun and dirt cheap. Am trying to get back into it but my local club dosent do Touring Cars or the other class i race. So it's either oval or offroad

  • Jon Waldock07/12/2009 at 22:57

  • Alex Andronov07/12/2009 at 23:21

Wellington is one of those people who is often forgotten but is great for quotes... He once, while writing a letter to his brother added a "PS. I believe I forgot to tell you I was made a Duke."

Also he is Mr "Published and be damned" and also "You must build your House of Parliament on the river: so... that the populace cannot exact their demands by sitting down round you."

I remember a stupid volume of inane information. I get that bit. Somehow that's never quirky knowledge though, it's just dull.

    But that's just presentation surely.

    night all! xx

Night Lou, hi Alex, misc to people I missed..

  • Alex Andronov07/12/2009 at 23:29

Why do you think you do that? ;)

I went to get my haircut the other day (evidence in tonight's advent calendar) and the guy who cut my hair told me that a) he had lived in America for 20 years because he went on holiday for 2 weeks all that time ago and enjoyed it that much that he stayed, and b) that he was only back because he was deported by homeland security.

Now I never know, is that a) a story he told everyone and is normal, b) is a story he told everyone but I repeat because I remember stories, or c) a story you had to be in the right frame of mind to tease out. I'm never sure I know.

  • Alex Andronov07/12/2009 at 23:33

I like things that go a) b) c) have I ever told you about that ;)

I can't imagine he tells everyone but equally I can't believe you are the only person he told. My experience of people who cut hair for a living is they generally talk about whatever they like regardless of the customer. There was a barber in the town I grew up in who had the sane conversation with every customer despite the fact that by the time you got in the chair you had already heard it ten times. Usually it was about his bowling exploits.

Right... Which means it's b and also a bit of c. I think it takes very little effort to get people to tell you their story. But to be bothered and to be interested is the hard part - I guess. People tell their stories all wrong with everything in the wrong order.

Maybe that is why you are a writer. You find information that the rest of us are not interested in then sort it into an easy to follow sequence

  • Pat W07/12/2009 at 23:45

    Ack got to go :(
