We have arrived at Sunday, and it is Susie Stoddart's birthday today. With her boyfriend as a significant investor in Williams, what are the chances of her getting a foot in the door of Formula 1 for her birthday? Probably very small, actually, so let's move on to some F1 related things instead.

  • Our excellent guest writer Stuart Codling has gone and got himself a blog all of his own. Whilst we'll miss his fabulous posts here, it's great he has a piece of the web to call his own, and I highly recommend that you subscribe right now. Do it now. You know you want to. I'll still be here when you get back.
  • A couple of days ago it was confirmed that Kimi Raikkonen will be racing in the World Rally Championship, driving for Citroen. This is great news for keeping the Finn in motorsport, and it may even mean we pay a bit more attention to rallying. Maybe.
  • In the comments, Pat pointed out the new ESPN F1 site. They are the owners of F1-Live, and the new site looks kinda fancy, well sourced material, some good pictures, and more importantly, no sign of any unreliable aggregated news. Worth keeping an eye on.

That'll do it for now. There will be a live show later on today, fingers crossed, so hope to see you around about 8pm, but of course, I'll see you in the comments before then too.

  • Pat W06/12/2009 at 00:22

How was everyones Saturday, and what are they up to for Sunday?

Saturday good, productive use of time getting a freezer and visiting the supermarket that shall not be named, plus a new halogen heater. Is there some sort of irony in buying a freezer and a heater in the same day? Dad owed me the freezer as he nicked my old one the previous time I moved. He picked up a Christmas tree while there, and grabbed a rather nice Subway footlong..

Sunday = do nuthin at all. maybe watch another race to blog about.

Came back, went to a carol service, chatted and helped clear up, then just watched cool runnings. Sunday...early-ish start, walk to Church then i have no idea whats happening

  • The Boston Red Scott06/12/2009 at 01:28

Still do, way past it's sell by date

in theory if it looks shabby I can always just cover it. As long as I have a couch to sit down on after a long day at work. Two weeks ago I cooked dinner and turned around thinking that I'd sit on the couch and watch tv. Then I realized I still don't have a couch. Or a tv.

  • Bassano Clapper06/12/2009 at 01:28

ive never bought a heap of ikea stuff but next week with a mate and a car I want to just fill in the blanks and buy everything. I'm here for at least 2 years and want to set up asap and it an easy fix and reasonably cheap too.

  • Pat W06/12/2009 at 01:32

yup. my guess is that if we're seeing, it has nothing to do with apple.

it is the perfect device. for everyone.

    why?

    has a multitude of uses:

    - iphone screen is too small to read text on

    - it's the right size to read a novel on

    - it's the right size to use in the kitchen, or to read a manual to fix your car

    - it's small enough to carry to work

    - companies will love it for meetings

See you all later guys. I'm heading offline.

    bye bye.

  • Pat W06/12/2009 at 01:52

    why?

If it's as affordable as expected [or hoped], it'll be a great media player, email & browsing tool

    Like a prettier netbook

    With Apps

Interesting.. I was in Comet earlier and was thinking a little netbook might be quite handy.

importantly, it has a micropayment solution built-in.

    that is THE killer feature.

it's also what the internet is missing.

  • Bassano Clapper06/12/2009 at 01:53

Interesting.. I was in Comet earlier and was thinking a little netbook might be quite handy.

If it weren't for the iPad rumours I would've bought a Linux Netbook months ago

    Or a second hand MacBook

that could work too. am going off last.fm due to half the tracks being wrongly titled and tagged.

  • Jeremy06/12/2009 at 01:58

im watching cycling.... as part of the V8 Supercars telecast. Hmm.

First street race in Sydney. I really should be there. I spent all my ticket money on this tv - i'm going to use it!

Bit disappointing when Channel 7 calls it a HD channel and it is broadcasting in 576i

  • Bassano Clapper06/12/2009 at 01:59

I still favour my own collection

Genius mix isn't a bad feature

I thought HD was 720 minimum

  • Pat W06/12/2009 at 02:00

and it is much better than it used to be

  • me06/12/2009 at 02:00

    Spotify any better?

getting there. ads are annoying, we may go for paid version soon. christine's in charge of that.

they're missing quite a lot of songs though.

  • Jeremy06/12/2009 at 02:01

    exactly! false advertising.

yes, it is at Sydney Olympic Park. Well done V8 peoples.

The track looks rather narrow and is incredibly bumpy, but looks like good entertainment.

  • me06/12/2009 at 02:02

The only thing we should be sussing out now is the ticket and hotel. Everything else can wait.

  • Bassano Clapper06/12/2009 at 02:17

Rally Germany is the weekend before Spa. I'm thinking about visiting my parents and then travel to Spa via the rally. But then I wouldn't be able to travel with you :(

  • Bassano Clapper06/12/2009 at 02:24

  • Pat W06/12/2009 at 02:32

I can't believe it costs more than Monaco GA

  • Pat W06/12/2009 at 02:32

And they wonder why they can't make any money

They are still in the mindset of restricting tickets for traffic reasons, despite the new roads

  • Pat W06/12/2009 at 02:33

    it's a sellout?

There have been bigger crowds in the past than go now, I'm sure of it. Say the Mansell era.

  • me06/12/2009 at 02:33

I can't believe it costs more than Monaco GA

total expenditure is more over the monaco weekend. but tickets are more expensive, i believe.

  • Amy06/12/2009 at 02:34

Estimated £120 for Sunday General Admission

    [based on 2009]

woah, Sunday only in Melbourne is $99 aka around £55

  • me06/12/2009 at 02:34

There have been bigger crowds in the past than go now, I'm sure of it. Say the Mansell era.

possibly. are the grandstands still there?

there wasn't a spare seat in the place in '08.

  • Steven Roy06/12/2009 at 02:34

    it's a sellout?

Normally they sell all the tickets but they have an artificially low crowd to guarantee the traffic is good enough for Bernie who uses a helicopter.

  • me06/12/2009 at 02:35

Normally they sell all the tickets but they have an artificially low crowd to guarantee the traffic is good enough for Bernie who uses a helicopter.

where else can people go? there wasn't an empty seat anywhere.

Silverstone 2010 Moto GP Weekend tickets start at £60

  • Pat W06/12/2009 at 02:36

There is plenty of space for more stands outside the pitstraight area.

  • Steven Roy06/12/2009 at 02:37

There used to be a lot more stanfing/wandering people

  • Bassano Clapper06/12/2009 at 02:37

Shouldn't someone be shopping right now? :)

  • me06/12/2009 at 02:37

There is plenty of space for more stands outside the pitstraight area.

not really, it's all corporate stuff isn't it. where would you put another grandstand?

  • Steven Roy06/12/2009 at 02:38

Shouldn't someone be shopping right now? :)

    Yes. SHOO!

    Shops have chocolate.

  • Amy06/12/2009 at 02:38

I found out they close at 6, that gives me 4.5 hours to organise myself.

  • Bassano Clapper06/12/2009 at 02:38

not really, it's all corporate stuff isn't it. where would you put another grandstand?

I'd happily sit on the grass somewhere safe

  • me06/12/2009 at 02:39

I'd happily sit on the grass somewhere safe

not sure. ground gets very muddy after three days of rain and standing room was four people deep two years ago.

  • Bassano Clapper06/12/2009 at 02:40

not sure. ground gets very muddy after three days of rain and standing room was four people deep two years ago.

    Standing is also good :D

  • Pat W06/12/2009 at 02:40

not really, it's all corporate stuff isn't it. where would you put another grandstand?

    Outside of Abbey.

The whole length of the bit between Stowe and Club.

I'd knock down the stands at Luffield and build bigger ones.

And while I was at it I'd remove the Hangar Straight bridge because it blocks the view for the high camera at Stowe (watch the 70s races).

  • Jeremy06/12/2009 at 02:40

I found out they close at 6, that gives me 4.5 hours to organise myself.

Amy, is your channel 7 hd coming in at better than 576i?

mine is PrimeHD but I'm cranky!

  • Bassano Clapper06/12/2009 at 02:41

Amy, is your channel 7 hd coming in at better than 576i?

Do they tell you the resolution?

  • Amy06/12/2009 at 02:41

I have no idea how to check

  • Jeremy06/12/2009 at 02:42

Do they tell you the resolution?

my tv has an info button that tells me. my friends old LG plasma has one too. I'm hoping her Sony does

  • Pat W06/12/2009 at 02:42

Dad just upgraded his Sky to HD.. he showed me Discovery HD. That's impressive.

  • Steven Roy06/12/2009 at 02:42

I found out they close at 6, that gives me 4.5 hours to organise myself.

You are not going shopping today. When you think you have 4.5 hours to get ready it is a certainty you will use all that time and then some.

  • me06/12/2009 at 02:43

    Outside of Abbey

people can no longer cross the bridge.

The whole length of the bit between Stowe and Club.

Ah. And I've just remember the touring car meeting used the national circuit :-)

the tickets are price and the race is a sellout.

  • Jeremy06/12/2009 at 02:49

ok, info button says the picture is 1080i

hmmm. i wonder if regional tv is ripping me off then - Prime is not equal to 7 even though they run the same shows. i could see the difference in picture straight away compared to 9 and 10's 'HD' channels.

  • Jeremy06/12/2009 at 02:49

ok, info button says the picture is 1080i

    thank you :-)

Incidentally, they've planned the new pitlane wrongly. They ought to have put it on the outside of the track with viewing areas on top of the corporate boxes, to give a view back up to Stowe. Right now the corporates are going to pay over the odds for a track below them and a view of fields.

  • Pat W06/12/2009 at 02:57

Mr C!!!! He went off in search of cheese... And never came back... Do you think he entered the kitchen and fainted? Do you think I should call Emergency Services? I can imagine the call...

    999: What's your emergency?

Me: Mr C has fainted in the kitchen due to all the cooking stuff

999: That can happen... We shall send police, fire and ambulance.

    Me: Fire?

999: He might have turned the oven on.

    Me: No chance.

999: Well if he's fainted we'll need to winch him up.

    Me: Good point.

999: Do you have an address

    Me: Sidepodtowers, Rockall

    999: I thought they'd moved

Me: Oh yes... Sidepodtowers, Slightly further up Rockall.

    999: Bonza! We're on it!

If you want something to look at this fine sunny day, then have a look at this

    http://gulfnews.com/pictures/news/your-pictures-of-cars-decorated-for-national-day-1.542842

December 2nd was national day here, and for some reason over the past couple of years the big thing to do is to decorate your car patriotically

Big business and several government departments hold competitions with prizes for the winners .

  • Christine06/12/2009 at 09:43

    999: I thought they'd moved

Me: Oh yes... Sidepodtowers, Slightly further up Rockall.

    Love it.

Just checked with Mr C who said sleepily that he didn't even get the cheese. He got distracted by something else, completely forgot, felt tired and came to bed.

I can confirm he did not faint in the kitchen... because he didn't even get that far.

  • Alex Andronov06/12/2009 at 09:50

I can confirm he did not faint in the kitchen... because he didn't even get that far.

phew! If he doesn't go into kitchens generally he certainly shouldn't go unsupervised. He might use the wrong knife or something ;)

Coming from a guy in the tropics, it can happen - pretty often, too. Hot areas and tropics are more susceptible to wild swings in temperature.

all i'm saying, is, i don't think it's a simple problem to solve.

    the tickets are price and the race is a sellout. {Comment #360}

You're right. Silverstone's north and south ends are practically encased with grandstands. The straights connecting them aren't, but the general admissions people need somewhere to go because that is how quite a lot of people get introduced to spectating at Silverstone.

The new layout is slightly longer, but it looks like the old layout is being preserved as a possible track configuration, so it won't produce any new space for grandstands.

What they could do with is having some of the spectators on the inside - the one grandstand that wasn't full was the grandstand near the pits (it was probably reserved for paddock guests, but there weren't enough of them to fill the grandstand even on race day, partly because some guests prefer watching in the garages or motorhomes). If they could have the rest of that grandstand filled with paying spectators, plus figure out a way of using the adjoining bank as general admission without people either wandering into the paddock or interfering with the helicopter traffic, they could probably get another 10,000 in the venue for the price of some extra staff and barriers.

Beyond that, it gets sticky. And expensive.

    http://www.patronisef1.com/index.php/f1-news/1680-silvy-set-to-announce-british-gp-deal

I linked to this because it mentioned this:

According to rumours in the Daily Mail, negotiations were helped along by new FIA president Jean Todt, who stepped in to smooth over the discussions between Ecclestone and the BRDC in order to get a deal in place before the 2010 calendar needed to be formally confirmed.

  • Lukeh06/12/2009 at 15:22

Have a quick question for any VB2008 users... is there a way for my project so that, when I create a new form, I can have a set default layout for the new form? Rather than having to copy and paste a layout from form to form, if you get what I mean...

  • Journeyer06/12/2009 at 15:24

Well, if anything, Todt is always determined to improve the standing of whatever company he's working for (Peugeot, Ferrari), and the FIA is no exception.

He probably understands that a British GP is crucial for the sport, and he did what needed to be done to pull it off.

If this is the kind of Todt we'll see as FIA president, I'm all for it.

Part of the requirements of our assignment is to have a website-like appearence, to have a single set layout with the main area obviouslty changing depending on whats happening. Like if you're on Amazon and you obviously have the homepage, when you search for an item you'll still have the header, log in options etc. but with search results appearing

Hear hear. A British GP is for the good of the sport, and Bernie has become too greedy. He's obviously a Viking because he really does believe he can take it all with him. Expect him to be buried in a sarcophagus shaped like a boat big enough to hold all of his cash and deep underground to take him on his journey to Valhalla ;)

ahh right. you can make a custom control which displays the default layout, and then drop that onto every new form. quite a bit of work though.

not sure there's an easy way to make a template. soz.

  • Scott Woodwiss06/12/2009 at 15:42

    Afternoon guys

I'm just watching on YT "The Secret Life of Formula 1" and I've just watched a part where Alan Henry speaks about all the electronic aids. He says that appaently there was a plan to introduce some form of standard ECU and give it to all the team some years ago but at the time it was scrapped because it was thought this would scare all the manufacturers away because it crossed over with their own technology.

This got me thinking - is it possible this could be one of the reasons, aside from everything else, that manufacturers like Honda, Toyota and BMW left F1? Think about it - pretty much all 3 of those car makers are known in some shape or form for their technological capabilities and innovations (don't ask me what they are exactly, I'm not sure myself). With a standard ECU in F1, maybe they took the view that the sport was moving away from a technological showcase and therefore with out an arena to try out their innovations, they would not be as effective.

I'm probably all wrong on this one, but it did get me into thinking that maybe there was a link.

It could have been a factor, but that alone wouldn't have swayed them away from the sport. The manufacturers probably didn't like it, but they could've lived with it.

It may have been a contributing factor along with the other restrictions like the rev limit, will-we-won't-we have KERS. The main reason was still the downturn I think, 'cos these decisions are coming from very high up.

Can i ask an excel question, as this is beyond me... If there is anyone here who can help i would be most happy ;)

If i have a coulum of text cells which have "speech marks" around all the phrases, is there any way to remove them?

I dont think the usual way will work as excel uses them to denote text?

I cant seem to get SUBSTITUTE or REPLACE to do it?

  • Alex Andronov06/12/2009 at 16:03

I cant seem to get SUBSTITUTE or REPLACE to do it?

You need to escape the character a double double quote does it... eg

So to indicate a double quote you madly have to write """" which is 1 x " to start you off, 1 x " to end, and then in the middle "" to indicate ;no I actually meant to include this " here'.

  • Journeyer06/12/2009 at 16:04

I dont think the usual way will work as excel uses them to denote text?

Excel notes text by using a single apostrophe as the first text character in the cell. Any quote marks other than that can be removed.

So you should be fine in removing quotation marks ("), but not apostrophes (')

  • Nick in Dubai06/12/2009 at 16:05

It's annoying because my method of working with it goes like this:

Visualise plans in mind based on assignment briefing and what goes where

    -

Set everything up visually on VB 2008

    -

Forget how to code/what code to put in

    -

  • Lukeh06/12/2009 at 19:32

Eek! All my buttons have randomly disappeared on VB.

Has jenson organised a family reunion I haven't heard about?

  • Scott Woodwiss06/12/2009 at 19:32

    what's that mean then?

They're kinda getting back in to rallying proper since they left the WRC.

  • Lukeh06/12/2009 at 19:32

Ooh they're back now. don't do that, VB!

  • Steven Roy06/12/2009 at 19:36

    what's that mean then?

Max made a worse job of the WRC than he did with F1. They had so many rallies wanting a WRC round and were trying to cut costs so instead of picking the best they had the hair-brained idea of rallies alternating. So classics like the Monte-Carlo, Finland, GB are in the WRC one year and out the next. Needless to say someone saw the opportunity and set up a rival championship -the IRC- which has far more sensible technical regulations and a far more competitive field. Subaru have been a staple of the WRC since the early 90s. They pulled out a year or two ago and now they are back with the rival as are other manufacturers.

  • guille230606/12/2009 at 19:40

ahh, so why did kimi go to wrc then?

because WRC still has the best cars. IRC uses cars similar to the support series of WRC (S2000 and N4 cars).

  • Kathi06/12/2009 at 19:42

ahh, so why did kimi go to wrc then?

because WRC still has the best cars. IRC uses cars similar to the support series of WRC (S2000 and N4 cars).

and it is still the world (rally) championship. At least for the moment.

  • Steven Roy06/12/2009 at 19:43

ahh, so why did kimi go to wrc then?

There is no money for drivers in the IRC and the WRC cars are faster and more advanced. THE WRC is still higher profile because it is the world championship. If the WRC people had any sense they would adopt the IRC tech regs and sort out the claendar to put the classics back on their own calendar.

Imagine the Monaco GP being in an alternative championship every second year. It's insane

  • guille230606/12/2009 at 19:46

they're supposed to be doing that. S2000 regulations (but with a more powerful engine) should become obligatory in 2011 or 2012, after a transition year. And starting next year they have a new company taking care of the promotion/spectacle thing (kind of Bernie). the question is if they'll arrive to 2012...

    but pioneering?

I agree that it has been around a while, but it is a pioneering idea. I'm not sure if this award specifically has to relate to something that appearing in the last 12mths, unlike the others.

you can't give the brawn car of the year though? over newey's masterpiece.

  • Pat W06/12/2009 at 22:27

your vote for car of the year?

F1 I'd pick the Brawn. Overall... choice between the Peugeot 908 and Brawn..

  • Jon Waldock06/12/2009 at 22:27

That really was the most predictable award EVER

Just what I was typing when you interrupted me mid-sentence!

The Brawn was in the making since the Jurassic period for heaven's sake. Newey's RB5 was undoubtedly the fastest on the grid for most of the season and will be the one people copy for next year.

  • lou06/12/2009 at 22:28

you can't give the brawn car of the year though? over newey's masterpiece.

but... it was soo good at the beginning of the season it dominated soo many races... plus they only made 3.. and i'm soo biased :) hehe

  • RG06/12/2009 at 22:28

  • Pat W06/12/2009 at 22:30

Perhaps they feel they can't give it to the car that came second. I don't remember them ever giving the award to the car that came second, even if it was technically better

can someone remind me to go to the autosport awards next year please? maybe i can 'famously' approach a Lorenzo, or Darren Heath and ask for a job?... and the story can be told year after year about how they tutored me etc... ;) *is fed up with hearing about how lewis approached Ron at the autosport awards...* ;)

It's a non-public event and they (Haymarket/AUTOSPORT) invite you to come along it seems.

You could vote for the Rookie of the Year award via autosport.com and, if you were any good at origami and didn't mind mascaraing your magazine, you could also vote for a few of the categories as well.

and the initial young driver nominees are done publicly, but then they are put down to 5 or 6 and then a panel chooses the winner

I just found out who else was in the running, and you were right, very uninspiring!

"Meeke, who beat Jaime Alguersuari, Romain Grosjean, Sebastien Buemi, Nico Hulkenberg, Rafael Matos, Sebastien Ogier, Daniel Ricciardo and Alexander Sims to claim the award, accepted his trophy from 13-time grand prix winner David Coulthard."

That's because it's for performances in international-level events in general, which includes F1. The categories are not mutually exclusive...
