Hello everybody, it's me again! I am plunged back into the world of writing the daily. Thanks to everyone who took part in the takeover week, I hope it was fun to write and read, and perhaps we can repeat the process again soon. Meanwhile, I am back and it's time to talk about Formula 1 again (maybe)...

  • Firstly, I must plug my advent calendar series. Who's silly idea was it to extend a mini series to 25 shows? Still, we are a fifth of the way through as there should be another episode up very shortly. I'd love to hear what you think about the idea, if they're a good season round up or if you're just sick of 2009 and want it to be 2010 already.
  • That Ricciardo fellow seems to have made the most of his test with Red Bull. He has been talking up his time in the car and said he's proud of what he achieved while he was there. It's hard for us to know what that is, being testing times and all, but if his constant smiley face is anything to go by, he did a good job.
  • There are more pre-announcements doing the rounds, with the ongoing speculation over Renault and whether they will confirm their future at some point soon. We were expecting something yesterday, so it seems more likely it will be next week now. There's also talk of a Silverstone press conference about the British GP. That can only be good news, can't it?

That's all for now, I reckon. As ever, I'd like to know what you're doing with your weekend, whether it is particularly exciting or the same old, same old. We'll be doing Sidepodcast stuff and preparing for a live show on Sunday. I'll see you in the comments.

It has a GB flag for English rather than a US one. I think this could be the worldwide part of the company. The US site doesn't have a section: http://espn.go.com/racing/

    I'm sure that's quite common

ah, but you did not see the two pages of rules we got emailed yesterday afternoon! I have to show photo ID to even get in!

  • Steven Roy05/12/2009 at 02:08

They aren't built for sitting on these days. 10 years ago maybe. :)

I did a health and safety course and the first example they worked through was the safety of photocopiers. Apparently they started putting thicker glass in them when people started sitting on them. It was quite common in the early years for people to break the glass and get lots of tiny shards stuck in them when they sat on them

ah, but you did not see the two pages of rules we got emailed yesterday afternoon! I have to show photo ID to even get in!

    Rules?

What kinda of lame party is this?

You know what rules are meant for...

  • Journeyer05/12/2009 at 02:10

    Hello, folks.

Just read back through last night's comments, and it seems I've missed out again. :( Not to mention I'll miss out on the Giggles-SPC Christmas Party... Although we'll Qik that one, right?

Also, saw the new ESPN F1 site. Layout is still a bit F1-Live-ish, but it looks like they've sworn off GMM - have they?

  • Bassano Clapper05/12/2009 at 02:11

It would seem so, time will tell

But the F1-Live site is still up...?

  • Amy05/12/2009 at 02:12

    Rules?

What kinda of lame party is this?

Apparently it's all to do with the agreement they signed with the venue blah blah blah you must keep shoes on at all times blah blah blah. I think it's just because they're worried that it'll get messy because theres 1500 people or so coming.

  • Bassano Clapper05/12/2009 at 02:12

But the F1-Live site is still up...?

    Not for long, apparently

  • startledbunny05/12/2009 at 02:12

I did a health and safety course and the first example they worked through was the safety of photocopiers. Apparently they started putting thicker glass in them when people started sitting on them. It was quite common in the early years for people to break the glass and get lots of tiny shards stuck in them when they sat on them

I have only seen 2 occasions of this.

happy Saturday everyone! Today is Work Christmas Party day which probably = drunken doohickey use.

I don't think I've seen a drunk Amy in the comments before... should be FUN. :D

  • Amy05/12/2009 at 02:14

    Messy is guaranteed

last year the party started at 2 and they kicked us out at around 8. This year it starts at 6 and they are kicking us out at midnight. I am not looking forward to finding the few people I know in a crowd of 1500, my project only has 50 or so staff.

"ohhhh tonight is going to be messsyyyyyyyyyyy"

  • Steven Roy05/12/2009 at 02:18

I have only seen 2 occasions of this.

The only abuse I ever saw of a photocopier at a party was when the company I worked for at the time gave everyone two tickets for free drinks. To save money they photocopied the tickets rather than having them printed. Needless to say when the boys realised they set up a photopying and guillotining operation. Whatever they saved on the cost of printing tickets they lost several times over in additional free drinks.

  • Bassano Clapper05/12/2009 at 02:19

Sometimes when we install a new colour machine, some bright spark asks if they can print money on it. They can try, but the machine recognises what it is copying, and sabotages the copy by making it all black, or a yellow background or some other way.

  • Bassano Clapper05/12/2009 at 02:24

    Clever

At the same company one of the things we used to do with newbies was photocopy a £10 note. Black and white only. Then laminate it and place it in the bottom of an open rinse tank. The slight colour in the water and the reflection made it look real.

  • startledbunny05/12/2009 at 02:49

I'm heading for some sleep now. I have a show to start putting together in the morning, and family members to visit.

Enjoy the party Amy, I'll be enjoying mine next Friday (hic)

  • Alex Andronov05/12/2009 at 10:59

Did you buy anything exciting like a giant turkey or party hats?

turkey! I knew there was something I forgot ;)

Actually we don't have room for that kind of thing to keep it that long. This was mainly exciting things like drink and boring things like loo roll and cleaning products. If you were going to guess where the money mainly got spent... yes it was the drink.

I did manage to add some sausage rolls for the party though :)

  • Alex Andronov05/12/2009 at 11:05

Did you buy anything exciting like a giant turkey or party hats?

Also I did get some crackers and they must have hats inside... I think that's kind of the law :)

mmmm... it's going to be a long day... ;-)

Gosh. Sounds fun though. 'Cept the bit about being outside :)

  • Christine05/12/2009 at 12:53

    hi guys

    Hello!

  • Kimster/Samy05/12/2009 at 12:54

I am supposed to play tennis in 15 mins, but its so cold I want to stay in my room!

  • guille230605/12/2009 at 12:54

slightly cloudy but no wind. it should be ok :-)

  • guille230605/12/2009 at 12:54

    hi guys

    hi!

  • Kimster/Samy05/12/2009 at 12:55

Whats the odds on Kimi being WRC champ next year?

  • Christine05/12/2009 at 12:56

Whats the odds on Kimi being WRC champ next year?

The experts said no because it takes a while to adjust to the completely different style of racing. I don't know how adaptable Kimi is.

  • Kathi05/12/2009 at 12:57

Whats the odds on Kimi being WRC champ next year?

    zero

  • guille230605/12/2009 at 12:57

Whats the odds on Kimi being WRC champ next year?

low, maybe very low. but he will fight for victories coming the second half of the year.

  • Kimster/Samy05/12/2009 at 12:57

Well this expert says he will win a couple of rallies next year

  • Journeyer05/12/2009 at 12:57

The experts said no because it takes a while to adjust to the completely different style of racing. I don't know how adaptable Kimi is.

Not to mention the small matter of Kimi being in what is effectively a B-team.

  • guille230605/12/2009 at 12:58

Not to mention the small matter of Kimi being in what is effectively a B-team.

and that Loeb is in the corresponding A-team...

Same car just that they don't view the drivers of that team as good as Sordo and Loeb. But its the same car that Loeb will drive.

  • Kimster/Samy05/12/2009 at 12:59

Kimi's points wont count to the constructurs championship.

  • Journeyer05/12/2009 at 12:59

Same car, yes. But the people working on the cars will be different. And that will surely count for something.

  • Journeyer05/12/2009 at 12:59

Kimi's points wont count to the constructurs championship.

    Indeed so.

no? A thought Citroen Junior was a constructor tem, like Ford's B-team

  • Journeyer05/12/2009 at 13:04

no? A thought Citroen Junior was a constructor tem, like Ford's B-team

Citroen Junior is a team. Unlike F1 (and like most other motorsport in fact), not all teams are constructors. Some teams just use cars built by the constructor teams. Such teams who build their own cars can also be called "factory works teams", because they are the team who have the closest connection to the factory.

In this case, team and constructor are two completely different terms.

  • Kimster/Samy05/12/2009 at 13:10

yeah. But Kimi will still win. He is the best! :)

yes, but there are two different championships for 'work teams' and 'teams'? I was referring to the fact that Citroen Junior is a registered team for the 'teams championship' or whatever is called, as they'll compete in most of the rounds (I agree that the 'constructor' bit was a misleading)

  • Journeyer05/12/2009 at 13:11

hmmm. i don't think a teams championship exists in WRC, only a constructors championship. As far as I'm aware, MotoGP is the only major form of motorsport that has a separate teams championship and constructors championship.

  • Kathi05/12/2009 at 13:12

    manufacturers championship

Citroen won and the junior team came 4th this year

checked in wrc.com. it's called Manufacturers' championship, that's why I was confused. to enter it you have to compete in a minimum number of rallies

  • guille230605/12/2009 at 13:21

well, I should go out and buy some things or my list won't get shorter by itself. see you!

I usually prefer taxis if I'm going home very late at night, if only because buses are much more dangerous here, especially at night...

  • Scott Woodwiss05/12/2009 at 14:29

Because of where I live, if I'm on a night out and need to get back, I have no choice!

Same. Thankfully the taxi firm I use don't change their price of a fair when it gets later in the evening. It's just one fixed price all day. Plus, it's the cheapest I know that can take me from Norwich city centre back to Wymondham.

  • Journeyer05/12/2009 at 14:32

I don't normally do buses either. Bit of a diva.

But then you bring a car. ;)

I got dropped right at my door. Workmates who have boyfriends who live one suburb away and said boyfriend is picking them up and then offers me a lift makes me happy. The reason I don't do taxis is because I really, really, really hate paying so much money for something I can do myself. Not that I can here, because I don't have a car. But that's my reason.

I would give you the title of Begrudging Wordpress Expert actually :)

haha. i meant to say, i wrote wordpress code out of the site last week, but at some point in the last seven days, it wrote itself back in.

yes indeedy. wordpress uncommented, my commented out code and reactivated itself.

  • Stuart C05/12/2009 at 16:21

i could probably admit to being that. wassup sir?

I wrote the bumf for my 'about' page, saved it an published it, but I get a 404 when I go to the page. Same story for my test post – doesn't appear when I click 'go to site', but when I opened a different window and went to the site, it was there.

And it wouldn't let me upload any pictures. In fiddling with URLs, etc, I've now done broken it, Steve.

Or is it something at the server end?

  • Christine05/12/2009 at 16:22

yes indeedy. wordpress uncommented, my commented out code and reactivated itself.

Ooooh. It's not happy with us phasing it out. Will we gradually see green bits creeping back in unless we fight back?

  • me05/12/2009 at 16:22

Ooooh. It's not happy with us phasing it out. Will we gradually see green bits creeping back in unless we fight back?

    exactly that!

  • me05/12/2009 at 16:23

And it wouldn't let me upload any pictures. In fiddling with URLs, etc, I've now done broken it, Steve.

you've broked your theme! one sec, i'll have a play.

  • Jon Waldock05/12/2009 at 16:23

    Afternoon all

Ooooh. It's not happy with us phasing it out. Will we gradually see green bits creeping back in unless we fight back?

Wordpress is like the big multi-headed monster, and you are Hercules

Every time you remove a bit 5 more come in, what you need to do (As learnt on Hercules the animated version) is to burn wordpress every time you remove something...

    Just a thought ;)

  • Stuart C05/12/2009 at 16:24

you've broked your theme! one sec, i'll have a play.

    It's a nice theme too.

  • me05/12/2009 at 16:29

    It's a nice theme too.

first thing is, permalinks aren't working, even though you have them enabled. that likely means your hidden .htaccess file in the root folder is read only (so wordpress can't update it as it needs to).

i can read your test post (have emailed you details on how to see it), if you disable permalinks from the wp-admin console your posts should work until you can sort the .htaccess issue.

not sure about the theme, gimmie a few more minutes.

  • Stuart C05/12/2009 at 16:32

i can read your test post (have emailed you details on how to see it), if you disable permalinks from the wp-admin console your posts should work until you can sort the .htaccess issue.

    You are a leg end.

I broke it by changing the URL in the 'settings' tab so that it included my pubic folder. Even when I changed it back, 'twas still broked!

Can I change the read status of .htaccess from within Cpanel?

  • me05/12/2009 at 16:36

Can I change the read status of .htaccess from within Cpanel?

possibly, haven't used that in years.

however instead of making .htaccess editable, you could manually copy this code into the file and upload it:

    # BEGIN WordPress

    <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>

    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f

    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d

    RewriteRule . /index.php [L]

    </IfModule>

    # END WordPress

finding the file is tricky on a mac as it automatically hides all files starting with a period. i use the free:

    http://textwrangler.com/

which will let you open hidden files and edit them (file > open hidden). this page also has loads more info on wordpress permalinks:

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks

  • me05/12/2009 at 16:37

    better link:

  • Stuart C05/12/2009 at 16:39

    better link:

    Hurrah!

Right, I'm going to clear the server and upload everything again. And then I'm going to do just that.

And then maybe, just maybe, some bloggery will ensue!

Come Dine With Me has just started so Mrs C will cease stropping at the amount of time I'm spending on the wretched computer.

  • me05/12/2009 at 16:52

  • Alianora La Canta05/12/2009 at 21:33

    We have 8 take aways in a half mile radius of here. {Comment #28}

I have to go a mile to find any takeaways at all, but the best takeaway in the area is another 1/4 mile away. We can get three crisp fish, three gigantic spring rolls and one portion of chips (which translates to three portions from anywhere else) for about £12, and it tastes better than all the other local places, to the point where rival outlets have had to drop their prices to compete. Oh, and they do good Chinese and Oriental food too*... ...on account of the proprietors being Chinese! Suffice to say my family doesn't see much call for any takeaways nearer home...

    * - Though their "Wondering Dragon" dish got nicknamed "Wondering Saltpot" in my house, their sweet and sour and black bean dishes are lovely.

Zoe slept for 11 hours yesterday. How is that possible?

She normally comes to bed at 2 or 3 am and sleeps until 10 or 11, but yesterday, she didn't get up until 1:30 pm. Lucky so and so! I had to go to work on 5 hours sleep...

  • Andy Taylor05/12/2009 at 21:38

  • Steven Roy05/12/2009 at 21:41

Is that because you don't go to bed until 7 hours before you need to get up?

  • Jeremy05/12/2009 at 21:42

    I can sleep for 6 or 7 maximum :(

I kinda need my 8 hours, but would like to survive on less. I know a couple of insomniacs and they affirm it is terrible, but think of what i could achieve if I didn't need to sleep so much!

    Listening to Coldplay would be too depressing. Sidepodcast episodes works well though. {Comment #508}

That doesn't help me either because it takes so much of my brain to process speech (sometimes it takes me until 3am to get to sleep*, but if I try going to bed before I'm tired, I consider myself lucky if I get to sleep before 4am). Playing a variant of Bejeweled for half an hour late at night or reading stuff in the dark will work in particularly annoying cases of wakefulness though...

    * - I'm only an insomniac sometimes though - my body insists on having at least 25 hours of sleep in a 4-day period and if I've not slept much in the previous three days, it means I'll be asleep for ages on the fourth day, and I plan accordingly to minimise inconvenience...

It's not definite but someone projected that because of the wobble in Mars's orbit it could start crossing into the Earth's orbit. I don't think anyone has been brave enough to predict a date yet because it depends on to many factors. Definitely not before Thursday though.

I'm in the doghouse with the wife for all the web-malarkey, but it seems to be working now. Full marks to the tech support people at my web host (www.asmallorange.com) who got right on the case and did all the necessary en-fiddling - and utmost thanks to Mr C for pointing out what was wrong in the first place, for in so doing he stopped me injuring my knuckles on the wall...

Well, that's it for tonight. Good night all!

    Alia!!! Help!

  • Alianora La Canta05/12/2009 at 22:09

    How rude! Mr C was trying to help. {Comment #538}

I'm not being rude at Mr C. I'm being rude at Wordpress. Firstly, for being so disgustingly rubbish as to cause the problem in the first place (no properly-functioning blog platform should require a degree-holder in information management to get outside assistance to start a blog!) and then making it worse by providing a virtually-unusable interface that didn't do the job it was supposed to do (to wit, load, post stuff in a reliable fashion and give me a reasonable amount of control over the output).

If Google has acquired my personal information as a result of this, then it would be fairly hard for Google to get less benefit from the arrangement than me. (Though I still don't know if Wordpress required a Google account, because if it doesn't then Google doesn't know who I am in the first place).

  • RG05/12/2009 at 22:10

perhaps the slight was towards wordpress?

    Why bring it up? It's not related to Google, and "in which case it got more out of the deal than I did..." {}

I'm fairly sure Google has at least one of the blog platforms in its constellation of internet properties (which users access via a centralised log-in database), but I can't remember which one. Given that I don't even know what the whole Wordpress sign-up procedure looks like (because I can't access it), I thought there was a possibility (if only theoretical) that it was the blog platform Google had.

I don't use any element of any Google service requiring log-in I know about and the one unknown factor was the Wordpress issue, hence why I worded my initial comment on the subject the (clumsy) way I did.

    there is no correlation between google and wordpress {Comment #559}

Thank you very much, Mr C - I can cease panic now :) I can't see Wordpress itself doing anything dodgy with my information, so you can in turn cease panic about me blaming you for data privacy breaches. After all, if I've assessed Wordpress's data trustworthiness wrongly, then surely it would be my fault for asking you to give my data to it

PS. My real name is not "la canta", so anyone could have that information without it constituting any sort of data privacy breach. In fact, I'm surprised Wordpress asked for so little - the original blog platform I was on wanted to know my real name, birthday, home town/city/county and several other items of personal information. Nothing that wasn't already requested by the forum software, but perhaps it set my expectations of blog demands a bit higher than was warranted.

  • Alianora La Canta05/12/2009 at 22:32

    anyhow. i tried, i failed. {Comment #567}

Well, you did your bit perfectly. The software failed to do its bit, hence why my blog is now on a wiki...

  • Pat W05/12/2009 at 22:52

That doesn't help me either because it takes so much of my brain to process speech (sometimes it takes me until 3am to get to sleep*, but if I try going to bed before I'm tired, I consider myself lucky if I get to sleep before 4am). Playing a variant of Bejeweled for half an hour late at night or reading stuff in the dark will work in particularly annoying cases of wakefulness though...

perhaps you need some instrumental stuff..

I had a wireless keyboard, the battery issue is annoying. I do miss the flexibility though.

I also had a wireless mouse for a while but it ate batteries for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

  • Steven Roy05/12/2009 at 23:09

Because moisture in the air can make it clump and ned to be sifted again.

no clue what that even means.

    Is Kitchen related ;)

  • Christine05/12/2009 at 23:09

They do! We needed a new sifter recently, and I couldn't find one n the supermarket, so I bought Triple Sifted flour.

Zoe claimed it still needed to be sifted but even though we didn't, everything still tasted delicious. Zoe can cook!

  • Christine05/12/2009 at 23:11

Zoe claimed it still needed to be sifted but even though we didn't, everything still tasted delicious. Zoe can cook!

Ah, so the real question is why do we need to sift it at all?

  • Bassano Clapper05/12/2009 at 23:11

  • Steven Roy05/12/2009 at 23:12

Ah, so the real question is why do we need to sift it at all?

Then all these football gaffe dvd's have been misleading us. Cos I'm sure no one has scored an own goal when a fish jumped out from a boat.

    The Internet party. Right. :D

    gaff

    noun Brit., informal

a house, apartment, or other building, esp. as being a person's home : John's new gaff is on McDonald Road.

I think it was Bassano's fault, he was the only who made the gaffe.

I mean this could be a prime target to mention Christine's plugging post: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2009/12/02/advent-calendars-without-chocolate/ although of course that is the teensiest bit self-serving ;)
