Hello all. It is apparently Human Rights day for the United Nations, and also International Animal Rights Day. I am going to combine these two, and suggest that I have the right to have a baby panda, and a baby panda has the right to come and live with me. Sounds like the proper way to observe these events to me. Now, on to the Formula 1 stuff:

  • Jake Humphrey has finally blogged again, after leaving us hanging following the final race of the season. There are thoughts in there about interviewing the drivers, finding out about Button's move to McLaren, and of course, the BBC Sports Personality of the Year. Mr Humphrey is hosting, and says he'll have lots of backstage gossip for us.
  • Ollie has written up an interesting post about the noise coming from the Monaco Forum at the moment. It's all about media and how Formula 1 portrays itself to the fans, and at the moment, it seems like a real nudge in the ribs to Bernie. Will he pay attention though?
  • F1 Wolf has posted another liveries post - lots of lovely pictures of cars from 1991 and their beautiful colour schemes. Eh-hem. I have to say hurrah for the off-season allowing bloggers times to delve into these great topics.

That should do it for now. Let us know how your week is going, and as ever, I will see you in the comments.

Oookay I shall try. I'm not sure where you fly from but Newcastle is easiest for me. Emirates go direct. It's cheaper for me to fly from London but once you factor in travel costs to London, it isn't. I am happy to go to London though if it saves me.

To tap in to what came out of the Monaco forum, I'm thinking of:

What innovations would you like to see in modern F1 coverage?

    may be too loose though.

I think with that I'd get lots of answers about TV coverage only, which is interesting but not what I'm going for this time really. Unless it is a part of the whole approach? I'm not sure.

    Thursday Thoughts Question

I know this is quite an SPC/MFC thing to ask and hopefully I've not nicked one of your future questions, but since it came up in the news and was interesting I thought it worth asking.

  • Journeyer10/12/2009 at 02:00

    Morning, folks.

    So a couple of things:

    1. ManipeF1 expects Brazil and Abu Dhabi to be swapped. BOO.

    2. Bruno Senna tweeted in Klingon! YAY.

    That is all.

The bag shops here only sell trolleys nowadays. I will check in Munich when I'm home. You have more than enough to fit in your bag to worry about bringing stuff for me. At least now I know what I'm looking for/ I can set my mum up to.

Amy... Why I was looking for you earlier was because after yesterdays conversation where I mentioned my cousin being in Australia but we discovered that Brisbane is a bit too far away I went out to dinner last night with my mum and was getting all the latest family updates. Turns out my step-sister Becky has just pitched up in Melbourne.

I'm sure she could be my Sidepoddelegate for a Sidepodmeetup (although she doesn't care much about F1 but she is really lovely).

Anyway, it was just a thought.

There is, I have to say, great variation in the quality of hummus around the place. Good hummus is wonderful, average hummus is very disappointing (if that makes sense)

  • Pat W10/12/2009 at 10:04

Morning. I found out a month ago when our suppliers started telling us. Then my boss said to remind him to change our accounts software on Jan 4th before anyone is allowed to do anything.

  • Lukeh10/12/2009 at 10:04

    It was at 15%!! hahaha

Nooo I'm gonna have to change a load of prices at work now

At some supermarkets (im not sure about yours) they left the sticker prices the same, and at the till it deducted the VAT from the products that needed it taking off

Ommm thats naughty. We got told not to do that.

  • Jon Waldock10/12/2009 at 10:11

It's impressive how many ways you can write "I'm sorry, i slept through my alarm"

  • Dank10/12/2009 at 10:11

Did anyone else not realise that VAT goes back to normal on 1st January?

    And what a con.

Did you notice that typically prices remained mostly the same, ending in .99p, thus allowing most retailers to pocket the difference? Yet, I can bet my house that when the VAT goes up, the prices won't stay the same and will increase.

Super. I want to go live in Switzerland or Monaco.

If they can get away with it, they will. Biggest annoyance though is that petrol will go up yet again next month.

Because they assume that first and foremost you are the girlfriend of someone who likes the sport?

ooh yes. And at the three races I've been to, I've not noticed a lack of females at all. Theres always been plenty there.

I think Leo has been taking pills that have affected his brain. He is no longer taking a salray from TWiT and will only get paid what he receives in donations up to a maximum amount per month. He is now talking about creating a system where if people hate a show they can take a dollar from him. He sounds serious about it too.

You get two langauges on ours. the automated announcements in English from the train, and the mumbled babbling from the driver/guard.

The trains near here insist on constantly telling you which carriage you are in. All the time.

I don't mind the announcement, "we are approaching X". And the announcement, "this is X, we will now be calling at Y, Z and W". But before and after each of these announcements the trains tell you which cartridge you are in...

    So it goes...

This is coach 3 of 4.

We are now approaching Gipsy Hill

This is coach 3 of 4.

    *Pause*

This is coach 3 of 4.

    This is Gipsy Hill.

This is coach 3 of 4.

    *Pause*

This is coach 3 of 4.

This is the Victoria service calling at blee, blah, and bloo

This is coach 3 of 4.

    That's for every stop...

There aren't even any short platforms on this line that mean you have to be in the right carrage. The train doesn't split. You don't need to know. And my train calls at 10 stops between here and London Bridge!!! ArrrrghhhH!

Mine splits when I arrive in Odense, with the grace and finesse of a 900 pound Gorilla. They de-couple the train and throw the emergency brake on the rear carriage. People regularly fall over and it's quite a jerk!

  • Alex Andronov10/12/2009 at 13:58

ours from London to here does split and doesn't tell you which one you are in, or only seems to once it has..

At Haywards Heath? I used to live there, back in the day, all the trains splitting and rejoining caused no end of bother.

One time I saw Charles Kennedy (former Lib Dem leader) who was using the longer time sat at the station while the trains were being joined together to step out and have a cheeky cigarette. He had obviously been down at the party conference and was wearing a blue shirt and a yellow (lib dem colour) tie.

However the trains at the time were run by the terrible Connex who's uniforms were blue and yellow. So Charles was accosted by several people who didn't recognise him but thought he was to blame for the late trains. Of course because he didn't know what was going on he was saying that it wasn't his fault but if his party was in charge things would be different.

It was a very surreal moment.

The FA's FAPPT is very inept, considering the standard and calibre of the current owners in the EPL. I am not surprised this happened...

Because it assumes that men and women want different things, when that's not necessarily true? For example, the #1 stopping women from going to races is almost certainly the #1 thing stopping men - i.e. expensive ticket prices!

Sure, do some research with some open-ended questions in case particular demographics need different things (I wouldn't mind free circuit-wide WiFi myself ;) ) but could the powers-that-be please avoid assuming everyone is Mr, Mrs and Little Miss/Mr Average?

You can get pay-as-you-go SIMS at the supermarkets near me - but it is dependent on which supplier you want, because not all of them are available at all brands. Obviously Tesco Mobile is only at Tesco, but there are less obvious restrictions as well. Obviously a one-brand phone shop will always have its own SIM card brand but no others.

A general phone shop would likely have most or all the available SIM card options without requiring a phone to be bought with them.

    Ahhh at a supermarket... Interesting!

  • Alex Andronov10/12/2009 at 14:43

The reason I'm interested in the sim card thing is that something (*ahem* don't read this Andy or Jeremy *ahem*) something seems to have happened to one of my old iPhones and it doesn't seem to mind which network's sim it has in it.

I have a 3 pay as you go sim, but it doesn't like that one because 3 is 3G only, and this phone isn't 3G so. This is all so I can read comments while I live uStream at the supermarket later.

The trains near here insist on constantly telling you which carriage you are in. All the time.

    I don't mind the announcement, "we are approaching X". And the announcement, "this is X, we will now be calling at Y, Z and W". But before and after each of these announcements the trains tell you which cartridge you are in... {Comment #331}

My pet annoyance on train announcements is the catering. My train journey usually takes 12 minutes, of which 2 are taken by understandable announcements concerning leaving the starting station, reminders of what train service it is and that valid tickets are needed for the journey (especially necessary since the line just started introducing £20 fines for non-ticket-holders who don't have an excellent excuse), where the train is going, when it's approaching the station and reminders to take all luggage with you.

What I don't understand is why we need two other announcements, the first of which is along the lines of:

"The on-board catering is on Coach W, situated between standard and first-class accommodation, offering cakes, snacks, sweets... ...and the kitchen sink. Please listen for further announcements for when it is opening".

Er... ...couldn't you have waited until the catering bar was open before saying all that? People have walked halfway down the carriage before discovering that the end of the message effectively said the catering wasn't available yet.

And then, "The on-board catering is on Coach W, situated between standard and first-class accommodation, offering cakes, snacks, sweets, sandwiches at only £2.50 each (when £2.50 is the normal price for them on this service), lovely hot and cold beverages (typically specifying prices for two or three items, all of which will again be the normal price for the service)... ...and the kitchen sink. The buffet bar is now open - please have your ticket with you in case of inspection". Sometimes with part of the message repeated if the communication system is having a bad day (on my service, the catering assistant does his or her own announcements using the catering bar's own communication outlet).

By this point, you're halfway to the next stop, having been put off by the high prices and wanting to clear the headache engendered by having been talked to for most of the first half of the journey about things you do not care about at all. OK, one message that the buffet bar is open and where it is would be useful. We just don't need to spend half the journey hearing about it...

Can I just say how glad I am that this is not a name we have to say in F1 very often: http://www.f1minute.com/2009/12/10/williams-his-highness-sheikh-khalid-bin-hamad-al-thani-is-the-first-qatari-to-drive-a-formula-one-car/

  • Alianora La Canta10/12/2009 at 14:47

However the trains at the time were run by the terrible Connex who's uniforms were blue and yellow. So Charles was accosted by several people who didn't recognise him but thought he was to blame for the late trains. Of course because he didn't know what was going on he was saying that it wasn't his fault but if his party was in charge things would be different.

    It was a very surreal moment. {Comment #337}

I can imagine! I bet nobody believed him...

As some of you know I have argued that the people who give out F1 drives know nothing about driving. This week's AUTOSPORT contains categorical proof that neither do the drivers. They rounde up every surviving driver who ever started and F1 race and asked them to name their top ten drivers. The top tens were scored 10 points for first down to one for tenth and the totals added up. The results of this experiment should be embarrassing to the drivers and to the magazine for publishing them.

  • Alex Andronov10/12/2009 at 16:36

  • Steven Roy10/12/2009 at 16:46

    They don't know their history

Their driver ratings are just odd. Jim Clark who is as far as I know the only driver in history who no-one on the planet disputes as the best of his time comes in 5th behind Prost who was pushed out of his own team by Senna. Villeneuve is only tenth just one place ahead of Mansell. MANSELL?

Piero Taruffi was 46th. What did he ever achieve? Montoya was rated ahead of Tony Brooks. Most people have no idea who Brooks is. He was a driver in the 50s who quit to set up a dental practise. Stirling Moss was quoted recently saying that if he had his own team he would have Clark and Brooks as his first choice drivers. But these clowns have Montoy, Alboreto and Laffite ahead of him.

They have Aguri Suzuki ahead of Chris Amon. I know Amon was unlucky but he was night and day better than Aguri Suzuki.

Stefano Modena is ahead of Peter Collins. That is insane. There are 83 drivers who got nominated and Coulthard didn't even make the list but Liuzzi, Irvine, De Cesaris and Lamy did. How could anyone put any of those in their top ten all time list?

  • Alex Andronov10/12/2009 at 16:47

#MFC Amazon starts to get serious about online... Only in the US at first, but if you buy a DVD or Bluray for many of them you will be instantly given for free access to watch it online right away. I bet after people have tried it they will stop getting the DVD shipped and just get the download (which is cheaper)...

Fortuanately for AUTOSPORT Mark Hughes saved this issue with a very interesting column which included the following snippets about the awards show.

One of the new teams has apparently only just found out its fuel tank is not big enough.

Steve Rider had a go at Jake for making the commentary look too easy. "For years Murray and I made it look difficult and Mark Blundell made it look impossible then Jake turned up and made it look easy".

He also added one of my favourite type of snippets that gives you a hint about people's personalities. Dean Smith won the young driver award and was really nervous. Lewis Hamilton went over and had a quiet word with him when there was no need for him to.

Well done Lewis. You won't get much credit for stuff like that but some folk will notice.

Although I do remember that last F1 Racing Top 100 where Kimi was in the Top 10 all time... and ahead of Mika!

I wouldn't have either of them in my top ten but I have no problem with Kimi being ahead of Mika.

  • Journeyer10/12/2009 at 17:44

    ...really? Interesting, that.

  • Steven Roy10/12/2009 at 17:46

    ...really? Interesting, that.

I would have them about level. Mika was donated his first two wins and it was only after that he really started to dominate. I think they are probably fairly level on ability with Kimi being marginally faster.

  • Journeyer10/12/2009 at 17:47

Why Doesn't Earnhardt Jr. Try Formula One?

    Let me just say:

    AHAHAHAHAHAHA! AHAHAHA! ahahahahahahahahaha!

Although the article itself makes a good point, I must say. It's a dig at Danica, but this also reminds me a bit of Nigel's stuttering F1 comeback...

Stefano Modena is ahead of Peter Collins. That is insane. There are 83 drivers who got nominated and Coulthard didn't even make the list but Liuzzi, Irvine, De Cesaris and Lamy did. How could anyone put any of those in their top ten all time list?

    guest post/rant?

  • me10/12/2009 at 18:15

One of the new teams has apparently only just found out its fuel tank is not big enough.

    what??

Steve Rider had a go at Jake for making the commentary look too easy. "For years Murray and I made it look difficult and Mark Blundell made it look impossible then Jake turned up and made it look easy".

I think we should organise a vote though. It can fill in a few hours that would have been spent watching 13 launches instead of just one.

    can do.

  • Steven Roy10/12/2009 at 18:16

    guest post/rant?

I think the idea of a sidepodcast vote on similar lines is more appealing than me just ranting pointlessly. If we are going to do a vote then it shouldbe announced on the next Debrief to let as many people as possible contribute. I know I will disagree with the outcome because there will be a massive modern bias but that doesn't matter. I would b happy to write a mini rant as the intro post to the vote if you like.

  • me10/12/2009 at 18:18

Nothing's been decided, but I remembered reading earlier that, as part of its negotiations with buyers, that Renault want the new owner to call the team "Renault" for at least the 2010 season and must use engines from the Viry factory.

Well, we figured that's how F1 related voting works. They ask you what they think but already have the answer in mind.

I picked up a business card today from a German guy who has developed the system WRC is going to use to let people play in real time against the people on the event. He's sending me the info next week. It sounds very interesting.

Just looking at Joe's latest blog post...

The Commission agreed that the Sporting Working Group, a sub-committee of the commission, will develop detailed proposals to improve the show. These will take effect from the 2010 championship

I wonder what 'proposals' they will come up for next season...

  • Stuart C10/12/2009 at 21:58

    Is he from SimBin?

You would ask that not long after I shoved the business card receptacle into the bottom of the suitcase!

No, it was some sort of pun name - which I thought was odd, given he was German 'n' all...

What can they really change? They can't change anything on the cars because it is too late. To me the only thing they can change is qualifying.

  • Pat W10/12/2009 at 22:02

I can't see why it would? It's just been the same positions but with more points

In 2008 the champion would have been Massa in most points systems F1 has used to date, except the current one. Someone worked it out for Autosport.

Um, that was the name of a certain adult magazine publisher's ISP.

Not expecting anyone to have done so, but has anyone played this new game 'The Saboteur' thats out? What with it being loosely based off one of the grand prix saboteurs in Joe's book and seeing Joe's comment on his blog how EA totally seemed to shun him despite Joe initially getting asked for advice on the subject and areas in paris, might be interesting to see just how much they took from the book as they clearly knew about it...

some are... Lorenzo is, Heath kinda is (but very busy), but there are a few that aren't too helpful e.g. Clive Mason, nice man but very busy apparently :s

  • Pat W10/12/2009 at 23:32

By the way, for anyone interested in it, this weeks Autosport has a copy of the Autosport Directory 2010, which is always very very handy.

I've always wondered who uses those.

    Hello all,

Just read the Renault story on the BBC website.

Fill me in please: Is Andrew Benson a reliable source?

  • me10/12/2009 at 23:44

Fill me in please: Is Andrew Benson a reliable source?

that rowley, is a question and a half!

  • Alex Andronov10/12/2009 at 23:44

He mentioned the other day about meeting at Victoria or London Bridge first

Indeed... If he's up for that I would strongly recommend Victoria simply because Lou is going to arrive there.

  • Jon Waldock10/12/2009 at 23:44

that rowley, is a question and a half!

heheh i wanted to leave it for you to answer ;)

I will go wherever I am sent so I'll leave it for you guys to figure out :-)

  • Alex Andronov10/12/2009 at 23:47

He mentioned the other day about meeting at Victoria or London Bridge first

Also I hope everyone has seen the actual start time is 5-6pm ish just if you are booking trains and aiming at London that may be important.

  • me10/12/2009 at 23:47

that rowley, is a question and a half!

heheh i wanted to leave it for you to answer ;)

just checked back in. where does one start...

yes, benson is about as reliable as the rest of the bbc. of late, he seems to care little for credible sources, but at least the source in the case doesn't appear to be eddie-bloomin-jordan.

  • Pat W10/12/2009 at 23:48

Also I hope everyone has seen the actual start time is 5-6pm ish just if you are booking trains and aiming at London that may be important.

Would meeting in central london at about 3.30 / 4pm be okay for getting to you at that time?

  • Alex Andronov10/12/2009 at 23:49

Also I hope everyone has seen the actual start time is 5-6pm ish just if you are booking trains and aiming at London that may be important.

My thinking being that if we say 7-8 as Bassano suggested people may arrive in Victoria at 8 and therefore ours at 8:40 ish which might be a bit late to get the party started :)

  • Alex Andronov10/12/2009 at 23:50

Would meeting in central london at about 3.30 / 4pm be okay for getting to you at that time?

Oh sure. It takes about 30 - 40 mins from Victoria or London Bridge to our house

  • Alex Andronov10/12/2009 at 23:50

right really am going now... Bye!

It is a good idea and good experience for you to try. You need to have a clear plan of what you wnat to do and what budget you need. You also need to know what you can offer a sponsor. If I was you I would contact a professional racing team and ask them for advice. Gives you an intro as well.

there's probably about 8-10 who are working to try and get it all up, we're going to get introduced to various people at AI so that will be interesting, but will deff keep in touch ta :)

    Standard things you can offer.

Advertising on kart and drivers - trailer etc.

    Optional signage at circuits

Use of kart and drivers for PR / corporate events

    Entertainment of sponsor at events

End of season event to allow the sponsors to try the kart with instruction from drivers

Coverage in university and karting publications - editorial and journalistic

Offer to host indoor karting event with food etc

Pick a championship and cost it

Have a word with Stuart about putting a simple professional looking proposal together.

Don't forget online coverage. You have access to a number of sites who will give you a plug and I am sure so will other members

  • Steven Roy11/12/2009 at 00:35

Don't forget the old theory of raising sponsorship. If you are struggling to rais a FFord budget try asking for 5 times as much and do F3. Sounds stupid but some companies will only invest in certain ranges. I have been involved with a couple of companies who were trying to raise venture capital and several times they were told that the company was interested in what we were doing but they did not invest such small amounts. Had the directors had a plan to use more money some of those could have been hooked.

Have a plan for more money than you are asking for in case you run into that situation. Have items like a new tow van priced so that you can sell that idea.

  • Jon Waldock11/12/2009 at 00:36
