Sunday rolls around, and it's worth noting for anyone wondering that there won't be a live show tonight. However, we'll be around all day for comments, so you can still come and talk to us. Meanwhile, here's what we're talking about at the moment:

  • Dank has an interesting insight into the goings on at the Red Bull factory. We think they're all locked up for a fortnight, but apparently they're also being used as a skate park. Question is, if you could get inside the Red Bull factory, what would you get up to?
  • Scott has written a post about the different music used within driving games and how epic it can be. Music certainly does set the scene and can be very powerful, hence the endless compilation albums of driving songs. What are your favourites?
  • Mr C has been busy yet again, and this time he's introduced some donations goodness on the playground. We're trialling some new things because we want to make the donation process less hidden and more accessible, especially giving shoutouts to the lovely people who hit that button. Let us know what you think.

That'll do it for now, I reckon. We're having a nice, relaxing weekend but getting plenty done, and I hope you can say the same. Let us know what you're up to and I'll see you in the comments.

Has anyone else noticed that their seems to be a lot of officla F1 toilettries about? it just seemed a little strage to me...

BTW, A certain north american racing championship's website is amazing, hopefully Bernie will have a look at it some time and spend the deodorant profits on his own.

    Is it worth reading?

    for £3.75? inc p&p

haven't read it. just saw it on the shelf.

my objection is, when she wanted a job and the exposure, she was happy to play along. and then she married a rich man, didn't have to work, so turned on the sport.

f1 is sexist, but her involvement made it worse, not better.

Which is why I heart Louise. Because even though her and DC made me retch on several occasions, she garnered great respect in the paddock.

bev was employed to go to all the parties that louise wasn't young enough, or attractive enough to attend. harsh but true, and she happily took that role and played along when it suited her needs.

so far as i know, she never attempted to understand, enhance or change the sport. maybe i have her wrong but louise, holly and lee are miles above her in all respects.

True. She didn't place a bet on Felipe Baby. Boo Louise :)

I never really liked Lousie, i cant put my finger on it but she annoyed me some how. I am not fully convinced by Lee, i (perhaps unfairly) suspect she got her job through Bernies friendship with her father. Holly is absolutely brilliant though.

I agree on Lee, but with Louise, although I didn't necessarily like everything she did, she earned her place in the pitlane.

i'm petrified of them, well.. mainly these massive ones, as they are so damn quick, and are just horrible and big. i should have guessed cause the farmer was harvesting or something today. i literally squealed just a second ago when i looked back at the stairs and i noticed it was nearly at the bottom. a bit like those angels in doctor who that move when you aren't looking.

On Wordpress.com, you're limited to the pre-installed themes, so if you go to the appearance section, you can choose which one you like the best.

Many of them have custom images though, so you can make it a little bit more your own.

  • lou09/08/2009 at 00:58

To be honest, choosing a theme on the download option can be more trouble than its worth, there are so many to choose from, it can take hours to decide.

He is mostly famous for being Delta Goodrem's boyfriend, but I just turned on my TV to find him as a judge on Australian Idol. He's being pretty mean to everyone considering he was in a boy band.

So he's the bloke that's going to be replacing the other guy who I can't accurately describe without being very un-SPC safe?

  • Amy09/08/2009 at 09:29

So he's the bloke that's going to be replacing the other guy who I can't accurately describe without being very un-SPC safe?

I do like that some newspaper guy summed it up with "McFadden is the obvious choice for the new judge, he doesn't have a career of his own to get in the way"

Re the donate buttons on playground. Great idea, personally I'm not so sure on the role of honour thing, that tends to suggest that some members of the community are worth more (for lack of a better expression) than others.

Just the knowing that you have helped is enough?

  • Alex Andronov09/08/2009 at 09:34

Re the donate buttons on playground. Great idea, personally I'm not so sure on the role of honour thing, that tends to suggest that some members of the community are worth more (for lack of a better expression) than others.

    I agree Jackie!

I like the totalizer idea. And shoutouts work too in specific cases, like when they needed a fan and then they were able to buy a fan and thanked who it was who donated. But having a big list of people in the club and out of the club seems a bit cliquey. But maybe that's me?

  • Amy09/08/2009 at 09:36

    I agree as well

  • Jackie / saltire09/08/2009 at 09:38

I do like the idea of having the monthly totaliser thing and in a way it may encourage people to donate that little bit too.

  • Scott Woodwiss09/08/2009 at 09:39

I agree with this also. It might make people who visit for the first time think there's one of those exclusive clubs that lets you do more just by donating when really that's not the case. Surely the satisfaction of knowing you've helped SPC in some way because you wanted to is better than donating just to get onto the list.

What I guess many are not aware of is just how much it's personally costing Mr and Mrs C to give us our fix of sidepodgoodness so the fact that it's more open must also be a good thing

  • Jackie / saltire09/08/2009 at 09:41

And also, some people donate their fantastic ideas that help strengthen the community but don't necessarily have the money to donate. We wouldn't want them to feel guilty that my friend "x" gave but I didn't

  • Scott Woodwiss09/08/2009 at 09:42

And also, some people donate their fantastic ideas that help strengthen the community but don't necessarily have the money to donate. We wouldn't want them to feel guilty that my friend "x" gave but I didn't

    Exactly. :)

  • Jackie / saltire09/08/2009 at 09:43

Off to make a bit of brekkie, back later :)

  • Christine09/08/2009 at 09:51

And also, some people donate their fantastic ideas that help strengthen the community but don't necessarily have the money to donate. We wouldn't want them to feel guilty that my friend "x" gave but I didn't

So does that mean the list of donations on the Sidepodradio page is a bad idea too?

  • Sean Golding09/08/2009 at 09:53

So does that mean the list of donations on the Sidepodradio page is a bad idea too?

No. Keep that. I think thats different. It's more specific. That's what I think anyway, and I haven't put any money there yet.

  • Christine09/08/2009 at 09:58

I like the totalizer idea. And shoutouts work too in specific cases, like when they needed a fan and then they were able to buy a fan and thanked who it was who donated. But having a big list of people in the club and out of the club seems a bit cliquey. But maybe that's me?

Wow. This is the second time we've been told we're being cliquey in almost as many days. Clearly we're doing something wrong.

  • Alex Andronov09/08/2009 at 09:58

No. Keep that. I think thats different. It's more specific. That's what I think anyway, and I haven't put any money there yet.

I felt it was different too.

  • Alex Andronov09/08/2009 at 10:01

Wow. This is the second time we've been told we're being cliquey in almost as many days. Clearly we're doing something wrong.

I don't think so... Quite the opposite. You said...

    Supporters Roll of Honour

We're thinking of giving contributors the option to be added to a Roll of Honour on the homepage / giving shoutouts on shows.

If you have have any other ideas as to how we might thank and promote the kind people who give so much, please let us know.

And people talked out how it might feel. I think the fact that the community doesn't want to do this kind of proves the point that it's not cliquey.

  • Jackie / saltire09/08/2009 at 10:02

So does that mean the list of donations on the Sidepodradio page is a bad idea too?

I think that's okay because it's for a specific reason and it's also for charity

  • Alex Andronov09/08/2009 at 10:03

I think that's okay because it's for a specific reason and it's also for charity

But Sidepodcast is a charity too. I mean maybe not a registered charity but it basically is.

    It's certainly a non-profit!

  • Sean Golding09/08/2009 at 10:03

What another podcast did was that iyou could "sponsor" an episode, and, if you wanted to, you could have your name and/or a message (generally one of support for the show) read out on the show.

  • Jackie / saltire09/08/2009 at 10:05

Wow. This is the second time we've been told we're being cliquey in almost as many days. Clearly we're doing something wrong.

I think the point Alex was making was that this could be percieved as being cliquey, he wasn't suggesting that we are cliquey.

As was mentioned by Steven? the other day, if we do see any new members of the community we should actively engage in conversation with them.

  • Alex Andronov09/08/2009 at 10:06

I think the point Alex was making was that this could be percieved as being cliquey, he wasn't suggesting that we are cliquey.

    That's it!

  • Amy09/08/2009 at 10:07

I think the point Alex was making was that this could be percieved as being cliquey, he wasn't suggesting that we are cliquey.

It kind of reminds me of the 'most comments' tally, people getting all "I love sidepodcast more because I have x more than you" although more money for you guys isn't necessarily a bad thing ;)

  • Christine09/08/2009 at 10:07

I think the point Alex was making was that this could be percieved as being cliquey, he wasn't suggesting that we are cliquey.

I get that, and Alex is right, the community always knows the best way to go. But these are the ideas that Mr C and I are coming up with and we need to sit back and think about why they are a little off.

  • Alex Andronov09/08/2009 at 10:09

It kind of reminds me of the 'most comments' tally, people getting all "I love sidepodcast more because I have x more than you" although more money for you guys isn't necessarily a bad thing ;)

I was thinking about that. At the time several commenters suggested that should be removed. Interestingly to Christine's point at the time it was being suggested Mr C was actually removing it!

  • Jackie / saltire09/08/2009 at 10:09

You could have a small totaliser bar on the top of the doohickey/lclt that shows the monthly total, that way when you donate you see the total increase

  • Alex Andronov09/08/2009 at 10:10

I get that, and Alex is right, the community always knows the best way to go. But these are the ideas that Mr C and I are coming up with and we need to sit back and think about why they are a little off.

Perhaps they aren't. We don't know nuffink really. And you two have created one of the most addictive sites on the internet so you do know a thing or two about it!

  • Jackie / saltire09/08/2009 at 10:11

I get that, and Alex is right, the community always knows the best way to go. But these are the ideas that Mr C and I are coming up with and we need to sit back and think about why they are a little off.

I hope you don't think that my comment was in any way criticism of your idea Christine, it was more of feedback of my own opinion.

  • Christine09/08/2009 at 10:14

Perhaps they aren't. We don't know nuffink really. And you two have created one of the most addictive sites on the internet so you do know a thing or two about it!

Ha, the addictiveness has very little to do with us.

Thing is, we pretty much know all you need to know about podcasting, although we're always learning new and exciting things. I didn't realise the amazing community part would also require some learning too. The battles we've had recently show we've still got a way to go.

(This one is not a battle, btw, just made me think is all.)

  • Christine09/08/2009 at 10:16

I hope you don't think that my comment was in any way criticism of your idea Christine, it was more of feedback of my own opinion.

Not at all. We asked for feedback and the response is excellent.

Morning all, is there a shop?

  • Jackie / saltire09/08/2009 at 10:22

  • Christine09/08/2009 at 10:23

We don't promote it because it is criminally neglected. We need to find a logo and stick to it first :)

  • Janna09/08/2009 at 10:24

With the donations thing I don't think a list of donors is necessary for all the reasons noted above, but I do like the monthly total idea. The only other thing I would like is the ability to choose how much to subscribe. I know there's a one off payment button but it would be good if you could choose your donation if it's not already shown & then not have to worry about updating it each month.

  • Jackie / saltire09/08/2009 at 10:24

We don't promote it because it is criminally neglected. We need to find a logo and stick to it first :)

What's wrong with the grey and red kerbibg logo. I like that and its synonimous with SPC on the web, twitter, facebook etc

  • Christine09/08/2009 at 10:26

What's wrong with the grey and red kerbibg logo. I like that and its synonimous with SPC on the web, twitter, facebook etc

Yup, we could use that. Take a while to sort out all the designs and various sizes of pic you need, but I'll add it to Mr C's list.

  • Bassano Clapper09/08/2009 at 10:26

Hi all. Just to add my thoughts

I also like the idea of a visible tally for the month.

Aside from the reasons mentioned above, some would maybe prefer their donations to remain anonymous too. I do agree that SPRadio is unique and a 'special cause'. The roll of honour there seems somehow appropriate.

Some podcasts use sponsored 'brought to you by' messages in a non-cringeworthy way, one or to of which can actually be quite funny. Simply Syndicated's "Make It So" is a good example

  • Christine09/08/2009 at 10:27

We know that it costs £60 a month to run (ish) well according to that donations page. So it would be cool to see if Sidepodcast was in the black or not.

  • Alex Andronov09/08/2009 at 10:29

  • Alex Andronov09/08/2009 at 10:37

    Almost like a wedding list...

I've seen a lot of people do this recently where as before people would have a john lewis list and you'd have to search to find something you could afford people have been doing things were you say, "flights on honeymoon £1,000 - needs 100 x £10 gifts".

And there's a whole load of selections. I think people had been finding that they got lots of the small things and none of the big things, but the big things were the really hard things to buy for yourself.

  • Alex Andronov09/08/2009 at 10:38

You could also buy several at one go, and it showed you how many were left.

Can we have a life sized Blue Peter style Total-ometer too?

  • Bassano Clapper09/08/2009 at 10:40

well, these trams have been on the streets of Hong Kong for years, but I never seen them painted with ad for F1 race :-)

Like the buses in HK, they seem to be from the same dealer as London's finest :)

  • Jackie / saltire09/08/2009 at 10:41

It gets back to the Britishness thing though and asking isn't somehow seen as cool. That's why I think I like the idea of a visual totaliser, a bit like the battery charge thing on the iPhone .. it's a reminder that it costs a fair bit to run the site without needing to ask

  • Alex Andronov09/08/2009 at 10:42

The more I think of this idea of a list of items you could buy a part of and then at the top of the doohicky it could mention a randomly selected item and how close you were to completing it (the random item could change every time you change thread).

Sounds like one for the list :)

    I can hear it now:

Item 1 - Full Time developer for Sidepodcast

    :)

It needs a better name than that though, one with an F1 theme. Suggestions?

Hello UK, along with Adam Rickett, would you also like Brian McFadden back? I know hes Irish, but close enough.

BRIAN! yes, pls send him back, but keep that adam guy.

  • Amy09/08/2009 at 10:57

BRIAN! yes, pls send him back, but keep that adam guy.

someone tried to audition for Idol singing one of Brian's songs. Probably a bad move when the original artist is there to critique.

  • Lukeh09/08/2009 at 10:57

BRIAN! yes, pls send him back, but keep that adam guy.

Woah! I didn't mr mcfadden had fans

  • Lukeh09/08/2009 at 10:58

I also didn't realise it. Must remember to put all these words into sentences.

  • Bassano Clapper09/08/2009 at 10:58

BRIAN! yes, pls send him back....

    Because Ireland's missing him?

  • me09/08/2009 at 10:59

Re the donate buttons on playground. Great idea, personally I'm not so sure on the role of honour thing, that tends to suggest that some members of the community are worth more (for lack of a better expression) than others.

understood, but i think there should be some kind of attribution, so if not a roll of honour, something else?

  • Alex Andronov09/08/2009 at 11:00

Also just to make a final word of caution on the totalizer front. There is a danger (and while it might seem slight at the moment this is a bit of future proofing) that people might see the total reached and think, "well there's no point in donating now then".

  • Jackie / saltire09/08/2009 at 11:00

understood, but i think there should be some kind of attribution, so if not a roll of honour, something else?

Could you say 10 people have donated this month or something like that maybe?

  • me09/08/2009 at 11:00

I do like the idea of having the monthly totaliser thing and in a way it may encourage people to donate that little bit too.

ooh, monthly totaliser sounds good. was thinking for specific purchases, but rolling could work well too.

  • Amy09/08/2009 at 11:01

ooh, monthly totaliser sounds good. was thinking for specific purchases, but rolling could work well too.

sidepoddonations to buy this? it's for charity!

  • Bassano Clapper09/08/2009 at 11:01

Could you say 10 people have donated this month or something like that maybe?

That would work, a thank-you that gives recognition and publicizes the fund raising thing

  • me09/08/2009 at 11:02

What I guess many are not aware of is just how much it's personally costing Mr and Mrs C to give us our fix of sidepodgoodness so the fact that it's more open must also be a good thing

we can be more open. we have to buy a bunch of software updates soon, so that christine doesn't shoot herself. we can blog what it's costing and why we need as well as what improves as a result.

would that be of interest to anyone though? could be quit self-indulgent.

  • Bassano Clapper09/08/2009 at 11:03

would that be of interest to anyone though? could be quit self-indulgent.

No, it's good to be open about the costs

  • me09/08/2009 at 11:03

i don't think we were going to mention donation amounts. just that someone has done so.

  • Bassano Clapper09/08/2009 at 11:04

No, it's good to be open about the costs

That is, yes it would be of interest :)

  • Lukeh09/08/2009 at 11:04

would that be of interest to anyone though? could be quit self-indulgent.

I reckon it'd be quite interesting to see a little insight on the financial aspect of things in the ways you're saying.

  • Janna09/08/2009 at 11:05

would that be of interest to anyone though? could be quit self-indulgent.

Personally, I would prefer to know that a donation is helping to develop something to enhance Sidepodcast than to have my name on a roll call.

  • me09/08/2009 at 11:05

No. Keep that. I think thats different. It's more specific. That's what I think anyway, and I haven't put any money there yet.

I felt it was different too.

can you both elaborate on why?

  • me09/08/2009 at 11:06

    It's certainly a non-profit!

haha. we don't do a profit and loss sheet at the end of the year, ours is a loss and more loss :D

  • me09/08/2009 at 11:06

What another podcast did was that iyou could "sponsor" an episode, and, if you wanted to, you could have your name and/or a message (generally one of support for the show) read out on the show.

  • Alex Andronov09/08/2009 at 11:07

can you both elaborate on why?

I think the difference was that in this case you needed to get to the total before it went ahead.

However there was also a feeling of... in my case... Hey I'm taking up far more time on the air than anyone else, I better cover my costs. And showing my name sort of justified that in my mind.

  • Bassano Clapper09/08/2009 at 11:07

can you both elaborate on why?

Is that in relation to Sidepod Radio?

Maybe as everyone was getting involved and it was also a one-off that was racking up a large cost for the day

  • Amy09/08/2009 at 11:08

However there was also a feeling of... in my case... Hey I'm taking up far more time on the air than anyone else, I better cover my costs. And showing my name sort of justified that in my mind.

And I donated for the complete opposite reason, I was buying my way out of having to make a show :D

  • Jackie / saltire09/08/2009 at 11:09

And I donated for the complete opposite reason, I was buying my way out of having to make a show :D

I did the Tesco thing, "every little helps"

  • Bassano Clapper09/08/2009 at 11:09

that i do like. brought to you by donator 'x'.

Seriously, the Make It So one is quite funny

I think it's Barger & Sons, for all your septic tank needs

Quite literally, a room full of poo

    Excuse my language

  • me09/08/2009 at 11:10

What about trying to get more interest for your shop, there must be a demand for branded goodies?

problem is, cafepress aren't very efficient at delivery in the uk. i think alia had some problems. the whole thing needs an overhaul.

had forgotten we had one, but it's an ideal project for the playground.

  • me09/08/2009 at 11:10

I know there's a one off payment button but it would be good if you could choose your donation if it's not already shown & then not have to worry about updating it each month.

ahh, yes. i see what can be done. cheers.

  • me09/08/2009 at 11:11

but I'll add it to Mr C's list.

add it to the playground. lists are sooo last week.

  • Janna09/08/2009 at 11:11

that i do like. brought to you by donator 'x'.

One of the podcasts I listen to just says it was "brought to you by donations from listeners like you", then goes on to tell you how to donate. It reminds you that you can donate but doesn't highlight any one particular contributor.

  • me09/08/2009 at 11:12

Some podcasts use sponsored 'brought to you by' messages in a non-cringeworthy way, one or to of which can actually be quite funny. Simply Syndicated's "Make It So" is a good example

will check that out shortly. ta.

  • Bassano Clapper09/08/2009 at 11:12

    MOrning alll...

I havent donated to sidepodradio, not sure how i justify why not without seming evil...

But i already give money to charity every month, and if i give money to sidepodcast, i would rather it went to you guys if that makes sense, without making me seem too stingy.....

  • me09/08/2009 at 11:13

Can we have a life sized Blue Peter style Total-ometer too?

    ummmmm............

Don't worry, I understand what you mean.

Thank you, although i still feel anti-charity :D

  • me09/08/2009 at 11:18

Personally, I would prefer to know that a donation is helping to develop something to enhance Sidepodcast than to have my name on a roll call.

understood. it's easy to do and we're always looking at new things.

one problem we have at the moment is the micophone stands keep falling over and we need desk clamp attachments to fix them permanently but you can't get them in the uk and we'll have to import them.

stuff like that takes up whole days of our lives :)

  • me09/08/2009 at 11:19

If the current ones don't have it anymore, I'll dig out an older one and point you in the right direction

    ta sir.

  • me09/08/2009 at 11:21

But i already give money to charity every month, and if i give money to sidepodcast, i would rather it went to you guys if that makes sense, without making me seem too stingy.....

a couple of people have emailed us and requested similar things. so i understand that too.

the charity thing may not have been thought through properly, especially as we haven't picked one. apparently that should happen first.

  • me09/08/2009 at 11:22

How long was the playground on 'the list' for? ;)

just invented it. it's like we're named the list :)

Nick, I understand what you mean. I decided not to give to Sidepodradio for exactly the same reasons so I added a note when I donated to let Christine know that my donation was specifically for Sidepodcosts & not Sidepodradio.

haven't read it. just saw it on the shelf.

my objection is, when she wanted a job and the exposure, she was happy to play along. and then she married a rich man, didn't have to work, so turned on the sport.

f1 is sexist, but her involvement made it worse, not better.

The book is rubbish. Never saw her on TV but the whole book is a one-sided rant where she twists the facts to suit. Avoid!

I was just reading about those, apparently they can't hurt humans and Australians don't kill them, rather they put them in the garden to eat the insects. Weird Australians, if I saw one I wouldn't kill it or put it in the garden, I would run away screaming. Those things have the creepiest eyes

We had 3 Bearded dragon lizards in my familys old house in queensland, they kept the spiders away, and generaly looked awesome...

  • Nick09/08/2009 at 13:23

Sydney Funnel Web is the most dangerous spider in the country I believe. I have lived in Sydney my whole life, and I have NEVER seen one, nor has anyone I know.

    They're behind you.......!

  • RG09/08/2009 at 13:24

Some podcasts use sponsored 'brought to you by' messages in a non-cringeworthy way, one or to of which can actually be quite funny. Simply Syndicated's "Make It So" is a good example

Am aware of something that does that. My only problem is that the show that does that that I listen to, it seems a bit sporadic when it does it. I mean it is a popular show as well. Just seems like its there one week and not there for a few weeks and back again. Dunno how it helps.

  • lou09/08/2009 at 13:26

I dont think they would take too kindly to the English weather or living indoors, but they are very friendly and love sunbathing... :D

You could set it up on the wiki... saying which shows are sponsored, which shows are 50% sponsored e.t.c. You dont need to say who has sponsored it, just if it has been or not...

Interesting idea. How do you decide what an episode is worth, though?

Afternoon all. Had no sleep last night, or very little. Find my self woken up very early didn't help. But, how is everyone else?

Hello there RG. I thought you might be intered to know that Newcastle managed to beat Wellington. Just. 3-2.

The podcast that I got the idea from didn't charge much. He said AU$10 per episode.

    But not netball.

televised and then repeated! I watched one game all season. I used to follow the NZ league in about 2004 but since it became trans-tasman I stopped caring.

  • Sean Golding09/08/2009 at 13:45

One game away from the world cup aren't they?

Technically it's two. But they are more likely to be two 6-0 defeats away from the World Cup. ;) They only topped Oceania because Australia left.

NZs team will be good in about 15 years, a couple of years ago was the first time that more schoolboys were playing football than rugby so once they all grow up we'll have more talent to choose from :D

    Walkabout in NewZealand?

The ones over here seem to have virtually become all night clubs... which you can drink all day in. It is a dangerous combination, you can find yourself on a dancefloor wearing flip flops next to a girl with giant high heels...

BTW my old Boss in NZ is now on the RWC 2011 team. Do you want to know how long the Sports Minister in NZ gave him to come up with a viable proposal for the new waterfront stadium? Two weeks. We got to see it before it went public and it's a damn shame it never happened :(

speaking of which, I thought of Lou today when I read about NZs plan to change their licensing system. I didn't realise in the UK drivers do an average of 45 hours of professional lessons before they sit their test. In NZ the average learner only gets 20 hours of lessons and not very many people get professional instruction as it is not compulsory.

  • me09/08/2009 at 14:39

if anyone is up for checking out some new stuff. we're experimenting with mobile live streaming on the g1.

have embedded qik live player into the factbyte factbox on the live commenting page:

    http://www.sidepodcast.com/livecommenting/

it looks smoother than the live streaming from the park we tried earlier this year, and only requires a mobile phone to work. instead of a whole backpack worth of stuff.

we're popping out now to test it out. it's scarily easy to use.

will keep an eye on the comments and see if it's feasible to use for future meetups and events. more soon.

Chicken. It's good that you can get some practice with her but you need to be confident that it will be OK. It's a good idea to try another car as well as your instructor's. I know people who had only ever driven one car and their instructor changed cars a few days before their test.

i think it depends on the individual cause only a few of my friends have passed, it took one friend 2 months so about 20 hours, but then it took another one of my friends about 4 months so around 40 hours.

i'm feeling much more confident on the roads, and i think i'd probably only take mum down some country lanes and stuff anyways so they'd be pretty quiet, i just have way too much stuff to get done in a week... than and Dad wanted to come too, and that would have been a nightmare! :)

  • Amy09/08/2009 at 14:46

I think it depends entirely who is assesing the test.

That could be true, the article I'm reading says

Concerns over the quality of New Zealand's driver testing were raised in 2006, when testing officers told media they had come under pressure from their employer, New Zealand Driver Licensing (NZDL), to pass three out of four drivers regardless of merit. NZDL and officials played down the concerns, saying the pass rate was a "guideline" that reassured drivers the tests were fair and consistent.

If thats true, thats a shocking way to assess things.

yeah mum would do that too... ah well it's got to happen some time. maybe not on the main roads though. when i go back to school though i'll have had longer in the car and will be alright to drive myself to and from school as practice with mum in the car.

I remember when i was desert driving a few years back, just after i got my licence, i ended up sliding down a dune sideways and almost rolling my dads range rover.

    He just burst out laughing

    @ Mr C

My comment on the USB story on mediafuture chanfe is still there. It is also on the item Thom Yoorke hates CDs and on the one about the Sony e-book reader. I posted it once and it is now on 3 separated items

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)09/08/2009 at 15:03

I think it depends entirely who is assesing the test.

That could be true, the article I'm reading says

Concerns over the quality of New Zealand's driver testing were raised in 2006, when testing officers told media they had come under pressure from their employer, New Zealand Driver Licensing (NZDL), to pass three out of four drivers regardless of merit. NZDL and officials played down the concerns, saying the pass rate was a "guideline" that reassured drivers the tests were fair and consistent.

If thats true, thats a shocking way to assess things.

That sounds like rubbish. My testing officer had to be convinced to pass me even though I did nothing wrong!

  • Nick09/08/2009 at 15:03

Is it off-limits to discuss some info I found out about BMW's background and why it may have influenced the decision to leave F1 after certain statements from Bernie and Max...

    eh?

Umm, It's not easy to explain this, as it's quite a sensitive subject, so I understand if this needs modding. But it's worth mentioning anyway...

We all know that BMW have pulled out of F1 because they were losing money and not winning, but I wonder how much Bernie's 'Hitler' interview was the straw that broke the camel's back?

This is because BMW were not exactly clean-cut in the way they operated during world war II, but to make things worse, I was reading a book on my holiday which talked about the major shareholders of BMW, the Quandt family. Turns out that the two half brothers, Herbert and Harald Quandt were responsible for saving the company after the war. Their father was Gunther Quandt, who had very close ties with the Nazi party and Harald's mum Magda divorced Gunther and remarried Joseph Goebbels.

Upon further investigation it seems that the Quandt family are very wealthy and powerful in Germany and tried to keep all of this hidden for years, until in 2007 ARD exposed all of this in a documentary.

I just wonder how influential all of this is, considering the timing of BMW's withdrawal announcement?

  • Amy09/08/2009 at 15:07

lucikly my parents are divorced so this has never happened and i'nlm reasonably confident it never will!

I recall one year they went to dad's work Christmas party, and I promised to pick them up, then promptly fell asleep. Because it was Christmas party season it was impossible to get a taxi so they walked home the 4km from the city at 3am. I am sad I fell asleep, after I got told off the next morning my mother told me it was "the most drunk your father has ever been." I'm sad I missed it.

  • Journeyer09/08/2009 at 15:07

    Very interesting

Although i never really felt BMW had their heart fully in F1, I am surprised none of the big f1 news sources have drawn this parralell

  • Alex Andronov09/08/2009 at 15:13

Although i never really felt BMW had their heart fully in F1, I am surprised none of the big f1 news sources have drawn this parralell

wouldn't BMW have made a point have mentioning it during their withdrawal if they wanted to clearly distance themselves?

  • Journeyer09/08/2009 at 15:14

Although i never really felt BMW had their heart fully in F1, I am surprised none of the big f1 news sources have drawn this parralell

Not only would you have to do some sleuthing to get this one (which contemporary media seem to be averse to nowadays), this is a bit of a stretch. Unless they have more solid sources, connecting the two might just be dismissed as speculation at best.

  • Nick09/08/2009 at 15:16

I'm not saying it's the reason, just that I find the info interesting and I wonder how much of a factor it was in the end?

Interesting info, but I don't think it mattered that much in the end. Had BMW performed well, they'd have stayed in the sport. It was mostly about their performance.

  • Steven Roy09/08/2009 at 15:25

I just wonder how influential all of this is, considering the timing of BMW's withdrawal announcement?

Seems odd that the Quandts didn't come clean when all the others did so that it would have less impact. It's not like there was a shortage of other companies with similar skeltons in their cupboard.

It is easy to imagine that Bernie's comments helped them arrive at their decision.

  • Steven Roy09/08/2009 at 15:28

wouldn't BMW have made a point have mentioning it during their withdrawal if they wanted to clearly distance themselves?

I would guess that the last thing they would do would be to mention it. If the family have historians carrying out an investigation into their past I would guess they wiill make no comment till the report is published and some good stuff can be used to mitigate against the bad.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)09/08/2009 at 15:29

Because you can't say "We're pulling out of F1 because Bernie made some naughty remarks" can you? It doesn't sound good...

Instead you say "F1 doesn't fit our image any more and we need to be where the innovation is".

Dank has an interesting insight into the goings on at the Red Bull factory. We think they're all locked up for a fortnight, but apparently they're also being used as a skate park. Question is, if you could get inside the Red Bull factory, what would you get up to?

I would pile all the cars on top of each other and climb up them and then stand at the top and make a video for sidepodcast?

  • lou09/08/2009 at 16:17

oh noes!! i just opened itunes and for some reason all of my podcasts are under music and not podcasts... this is not good :(

  • Alex Andronov09/08/2009 at 16:17

I'm going mad with question marks today. Earlier after a clear question I didn't include one. Then in that last comment I included one when it wasn't a question. I must be getting Mr Citis!

looks like most of my podcast files have disappeared...about 20 are in my music section... but the others are just not there... my applications aren't there either. if i sync my ipod to itunes will it erase them from my ipod or put them back onto itunes?

yep they appear to all be in the podcasts folder... just suddenly not in itunes :s

  • Alex Andronov09/08/2009 at 16:24

Sync on iTunes is pretty much one way... Only notes and a few other things come back from the phone. Things you've downloaded, including applications do but not if you have previously synced.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)09/08/2009 at 16:25

Right it sounds like you might need to do a repair of your itunes index...

Do you have any kind of backup software Lou?

  • lou09/08/2009 at 16:31

Do you have any kind of backup software Lou?

backup software? i've got a copy of all the files from itunes/ my computer on my external hard drive... that's as far as my backups seem to go (other than my music being on CDs)

  • Alex Andronov09/08/2009 at 16:33

backup software? i've got a copy of all the files from itunes/ my computer on my external hard drive... that's as far as my backups seem to go (other than my music being on CDs)

Ah okay... When did you last make a backup?

Basically... There are two sets of files that are important here...

    1) The music and actual podcasts - these look to be fine

    2) The files that iTunes makes to create a map of where all of these files are - this looks to have become broken

So all the podcasts are still there in the folders. We just need to get a good previous version of the index. There may be a few problems of anything updated (podcasts etc) since the last backup though.

  • Alex Andronov09/08/2009 at 16:35

Even without a backup we can re-create the index from scratch. However you may, that way, lose things like playlists you have created, the record of how many times you've played the tracks and any ratings you have.

  • lou09/08/2009 at 16:37

okay... so where can i find out how to repair the index or whatever?

  • Alianora La Canta09/08/2009 at 16:41

    bev turner. did itv coverage for a bit. went to all the fancy parties and then write a book saying f1 is a bit sexist. {Comment #10}

The book was called "The Pits" and I've read the paperback version. It didn't just say F1 was sexist, it seemed to say (through detailed if somewhat anecdotal examples) that it lacked any sort of ethics beyond the almighty dollar whatsoever (football, for example, got favourable comparisons). She claimed the press was maltreated, fans got a raw deal and that there was a lot of back-stabbing in the paddock. The press picked up on the sexism allegation because that was one of the few bits of the book that wasn't widely known in the paddock (though from the evidence in the book, it probably wasn't as big a problem as Beverley suggested).

  • Alex Andronov09/08/2009 at 16:41

playlists and those things don't matter to me, i don't used them much.

Right... Well then you have to make a decision as to if you think it would be better to just start from scratch and create a new index or if you would like to try and preserve the playlists (knowing that you would set the index back by a month in content terms)?

  • Alianora La Canta09/08/2009 at 16:43

    Which is why I heart Louise. Because even though her and DC made me retch on several occasions, she garnered great respect in the paddock. {Comment #16}

Louise, by the way, also wrote a book about F1 (considerably more respectful than Beverley's) back in 2000. It was an interesting read at the time, but I've forgotten the title.

The most sensational part, in my opinion, was that it basically argued that Formula 1 drivers weren't really sportsmen. Except Mark Webber who was only a sportsman because he was interested in other sports. I may be mis-remembering this part.

It's nothing to do with reloading the music or the podcasts. It's just getting iTunes to realise that the files are actually there.

I don't know if that is the case or not but it sounds reasonable. Astronauts really only have G pushing them into their seats and don't have it acting on their necks. They also don't really have to function to any degree while suffering hig G force

  • me09/08/2009 at 16:56

  • me09/08/2009 at 16:58

my ideal solution would be to have a camera mounted somewhere, maybe on my hat, and have it stream live. then read comments on the phone. i don't really need fullscreen video to see what's being recorded. picture-in-picture would be fine.

  • Alianora La Canta09/08/2009 at 16:58

    i am never visiting you, you can visit us! {Comment #55}

If you visit me, I recommend you don't enter my bedroom. Apart from the huge mess created by having more books and magazines than shelf space, there's also a spider colony behind the wardrobe (which I happen to quite like). Mum makes sure the spiders are not welcome in any other room of the house though.

  • Alex Andronov09/08/2009 at 16:58

we didn't block the t-mobile network today.

Yeah... Well regardless of who is blocking it, Apple or AT&T are.

Allegedly AT&T are completely at capacity already. And the iPhone has completely degraded their service. They have done large scale upgrade programs, but the iPhone sales have outstripped the progress.

    Also just to make a final word of caution on the totalizer front. There is a danger (and while it might seem slight at the moment this is a bit of future proofing) that people might see the total reached and think, “well there’s no point in donating now then”. {Comment #172}

This is where the wish list can be combined with the totaliser idea. NaNoWriMo has a great one. As well as the total, it shows a selection of books in increasing sizes. If you put your mouse over each one, it shows what will be done if that amount of money is donated. These range from the first one, for stuff that's essential to the site's continued functioning ("Staff work in a building with electricity, running water and an internet connection") to the last one that has the developers' wildest dreams listed ("New, expanded curricula and teaching materials, site guaranteed open until end of 2009*")

As each target is hit, the next book lights up, so it's easy to see what has already been achieved and what can be done next.

Every so often, as wishes are met, you can simply change the wording of the totaliser to show your new wishes (you're bound to think of something).

    * - note that this totaliser went up in autumn 2008, so having everything paid for one year in the previous year would have been spectacular.

    problem is, cafepress aren’t very efficient at delivery in the uk. i think alia had some problems. {Comment #191}

I did, though it has to be said Sidepodcast have already got further than Cafépress (because in my case the problem was that the company refused to process money). I'm still trying to get my enthusiasm back for the logoed clothing project (because that's the third organisation I've had problems with which does online custom T-shirt sales).

  • Alex Andronov09/08/2009 at 17:25

There is a feature that would work. You do a two finger down scroll and it just starts reading down the page. Then if you want it to go back to the top (because of a new comment or whatever) you just do a two finger scroll up and it starts again. The only annoying thing is that it has to read Sidepodcast: Current Discussion, the filter box, connected box, your deails, selected thread etc... If that could be removed this could really work in an incredibly distracting way :)

Point being that this feature works on my old phone because it's a software upgrade...

  • Lukeh09/08/2009 at 17:59

    Who is this guy?

He looks into various different things and just finds out about them, like gang crime in America where he was going in ghettos in the worst areas interviewing people and looking at how the police deal with it all, state prisons and the prisoners within them, their attitudes and the likes, the mindset of an addicted las vegas gambler and how they deal with things concerning their casino lives, and the most disturbing one for me was delving into the Westboro Baptist Church who are the most horrible people I've ever seen on tv tbh. Just nasty, bigoted horrible individuals.

His shows make for a quite fascinating watch though.

    By the way, my wife picked up a copy of Hello! Magazine whilst on holiday and it had that pic of Felipe in it… {Comment #366}

How, exactly, does that story even fit in Hello!'s usual editorial line, let alone that picture?

  • Alianora La Canta09/08/2009 at 18:12

    i think it depends on the individual cause only a few of my friends have passed, it took one friend 2 months so about 20 hours, but then it took another one of my friends about 4 months so around 40 hours. {Comment #397}

My brother needed two years of lessons (about 100 hours of lessons total because he could only get one hour a week) and I've been told to expect it to take longer than that for me to learn. Learning how to drive is really expensive :(

I'm not entirely sure, but it's half a page in some kind of section on world events. There's a picture of him being lifted out the car and a picture of the car itself. Underneath the text reads:

His shattered helmet and badly cut eye bear witness to the force which a spring from Rubens Barrichello's Brawn Formula 1 car hit Felipe Massa as he took part in qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix. The part slammed into the Ferrari driver's helmet as he was travelling at more than 160mph, knocking him unconscious and causing him to drive straight into a tyre barrier. Despite retiring in 2006, seven-time world champion M****** S*********, 40, will step into the Brazilian's shoes while he recovers from his injuries, which include a fractured skull.

    It is technically the day of rest…. {Comment #398}

If you still haven't made your mind up, don't go swimming because the pool probably shut at around 3pm to make room for children's parties...

Apparently Sprint cup cars have 'too much power' to put the rain tyres on

  • Alianora La Canta09/08/2009 at 18:20

    That sounds like rubbish. My testing officer had to be convinced to pass me even though I did nothing wrong! {Comment #429}

The UK has an upper limit as to how many drivers an instructor can pass a month, if I remember correctly. I can't remember whether it's an absolute or proportional one.

I can imagine they have too much weight but not too much power

Apparently they ran a nationwide race on them in montreal last year, and it went ok.

But apparently their hasnt been sufficient testing of rain tyres on current cars

No it didnt! they showed a clip of a guy driving with 1 arm out the window cleaning his windscreen with a windscreen cleaning brush!

Skysports think so, they havent gone to the IRL. I guess they might have to wait for the track to dry?

More than you will ever know, it was AWESOME and i may doing other similar things in the future...watch this space...

It was better than any other race i've ever been too because it had a real story behind it, and everyone clubbed in together. Andddd, the top 5 were seperated by something like 2-3 laps by the end of the race, how often does that happen!!

I have however, only had about 4 hours sleep in the last 24 hours and so am running on empty a bit.

Also, i learnt a life lesson....there are a group of people who sleep less than Amy....they are called the Dutch 2CV team...

if only, the cars came round onto the grid and were stopped, the cars werent allowed to be touched or worked on until 8.55 this morning, over 5.5 hours later.

They stopped the Britcar 24 Hours in the middle of the night because of fog. That was the year TG did it in the diesel BMW.

  • Jon Waldock09/08/2009 at 19:21

It was alright for a bit, but 10 mins into my 3-7 shift the fog just got 10 times worse, they had to bring the safety car out, you couldnt see between the marshalls posts and thats when it can get dangerous

It carrys on, so on the timing screens it just shows the cars as doing a 5 hour lap. The funniest bit was that the time the cars stopped still counted for each drivers stint, so one guy had just got out hte pits when the safety car came out to stop the field, he'd done one lap, and because he would start again 5 hours later, that's over teh 3 hours max time allowed per driver, so he couldnt race again until someone else had!!!

My first one started at 7, till 11, so slept from 11.45ish (i had to convince myself that sleep was a good idea, my body wasnt convinced at that time of night), till 2.45am, 3-7am was next shift, however that was the easiest shift as i was in the box the whole time just que-ing up music and jingles with the occational burst of "nothings changed - more music", then woke up at 8.30 to hear the tannoy say "Race Restart in 5 minutes", and then have been up since then.

It's a weird phenomenon that's on the F1 timing data too - lap 1 of the race often takes about 15 minutes and the first lap of each qualifying stints are are also about that length too...

    Dont silkworms make silk? {Comment #608}

Spiders make a form of silk for their cobwebs. They simply don't make enough of it to be worth harvesting (you'd need the entire capacity of several hundred to make a garment). Silkworms make enough silk for it to be worth the bother of harvesting for human usage.

    If ETA are acting up, i wonder if this could have any implications on the GP at Valencia? {Comment #618}

If the Spanish government issues warnings about ETA carrying out operations in tourist areas of the mainland, possibly. However, Bernie has stuck two fingers up to terrorists before and I imagine he will do so again - unless Spain decides to ban all incoming travellers or there's a direct threat to the race.

So they want us to get fit, but they don't allow us to get fit?

One of my favourite bits of the weekend was 5 minutes before the end of the race there was 4 announcements all stating that "Children under 16 are not allowed in the pitlane when the race finishes" which after the 4th time i just wanted to shout "I KNOW!!! THERE ARE MASSIVE SIGNS TELLING US!!"

    silly people ;)

  • Andy Taylor09/08/2009 at 20:16

    Yes. Pictures on Drop.io

More than you will ever know, it was AWESOME and i may doing other similar things in the future…watch this space…

    It was better than any other race i’ve ever been too because it had a real story behind it, and everyone clubbed in together. Andddd, the top 5 were seperated by something like 2-3 laps by the end of the race, how often does that happen!! {Comment #656}

Glad you had a great time, Jon :) Welcome back!

  • Andy Taylor09/08/2009 at 20:18

Let me guess, no children on the race track during/after the race either?

  • Jon Waldock09/08/2009 at 20:20

Let me guess, no children on the race track during/after the race either?

It was a real shame because there were loads of kids from the different familys who were racing, they were confined to riding their bikes around the back of the pits

Yes, we were watching them talk about Nascar for two hours rather than actually race. Can't help but think "wimpy, wimpy, wimpy" that they don't race in a little rain.

  • Pat W09/08/2009 at 20:49

You have to register the birth within 6 weeks, but you have up to one year to amend the registration. I think this is to stop panicking fathers from putting down the first thing they think of (e.g. No Smoking Johnson) and then having to go home and explain what they have done.

Last time they raced in the rain was the Nationwide in Montreal last year I think. It was an absolute farce - the tyres were out-of-date (as in the rubber had expired and hardened) and the "wipers" did not work - some drivers resorted to using hand squeegees!

And that was after 2 drive throughs, the 2nd of which was messed up and made me pit again, only to find the first time had been right. Dropped to 6th but put on new tyres and managed to get back to 3rd on lap 28 of 30 :D

    [F1 toiletries etc]

They seemed very cheap, i almost bought some just to get a free f1 keyring :P

We got a free hat with one lot, and a free toiletry bag with another. Worth every penny :)

I paid £4 and got a mug, a keyring and a deodorant. I only wanted the mug (because I already have the keyring) and still thought it was a bargain!

Luck? I mean it, prediction league I do (that I remember) I finished 3rd last year. This year I'm about 18th because everything has been shaken up and it is very, very hard to predict.

Also my stubborness at the start of the season that Brawn were quick.

    Plug plug plug :P

    http://woodwiss.wordpress.com/2009/08/09/my-problem-with-ignorance/

Just something I whipped up on my new general blog.

  • Pat W09/08/2009 at 21:43

I missed an interesting discussion earlier, will try to summarise a few thoughts here, apologies if too long.

    [Alex said..]

I like the totalizer idea. And shoutouts work too in specific cases, like when they needed a fan and then they were able to buy a fan and thanked who it was who donated. But having a big list of people in the club and out of the club seems a bit cliquey. But maybe that's me?

I don't think it is cliquey. That said, if the same names were on the list each month it could make others feel a bit guilty for not contributing enough, and indeed the donors might even feel guilty for appearing so often. And there may be those who wish to remain anonymous.

But as Alex says, if someone makes a contribution that is the difference between Something Happening and something Not Happening (even keeping cool), give 'em a shout out, absolutely.

    [Jackie said...]

I do like the idea of having the monthly totaliser thing and in a way it may encourage people to donate that little bit too.

There is another site I use which requests donations to cover their running costs. They just show the percentage of next month's costs that have been covered so far this month, in the stats box on the left-hand menu bar. I quite like the %age idea because then you're not putting £ values to it.

    [Christine said..]

I get that, and Alex is right, the community always knows the best way to go. But these are the ideas that Mr C and I are coming up with and we need to sit back and think about why they are a little off.

Keep the ideas coming. They are ideas, they are supposed to be knocked around a bit until something workable emerges, they can't always be spot on straight away.

would that be of interest to anyone though? could be quit self-indulgent.

I reckon it'd be quite interesting to see a little insight on the financial aspect of things in the ways you're saying.

I agree with Lukeh. Some of this kit you've got is pretty expensive stuff - and also interesting in its own right, like the video test today.

Friends is a very difficult term, it can mean anything from, lets not pretend we dont know each other, to lets just leave things as they were, to OMG BFF4LIFE.

When i get in a situation like that i normally take 3 steps back and just accept what happens is what happens, which ever way things turn. Unless you see an opportunity, its all to easy to make things worse.

Dont let it stress you out. every experience is something you can use to help in the future

:P Might start using that more often... "an internet promise" ;)

  • Nikki09/08/2009 at 21:54

When i get in a situation like that i normally take 3 steps back and just accept what happens is what happens, which ever way things turn. Unless you see an opportunity, its all to easy to make things worse.

Another question you should ask yourself is "do I really want to be just friends with this person, or would I rather be getting it on with him/her?" Sometimes it is better for me to decline the "couldn't we just be friends?" part of the date/relationship request rejection because, if I'm being honest with myself, the answer is "no thanks, that's not enough for me."

The schedule stayed the same. New stuff added, (readded in my case) but all the stuff there before stayed.

We are still looking for fillers to slot between programs and to put on if there is a disaster.

I am going to have to shuffle some stuff now that it has been switched to a Saturday. I can't do the quiz at the scheduled time so that either has to move or someone else can take on Journeyer. I may also try and swap sidepodspace with Christine and Bassano's film show to guarantee that I am back and organised in time.

:D the interesting thing about that bridge is they have no approval for it, and are still getting people to pay donations for building it.

Is it not meant to be identical to the bridge in Sydney?

  • RG09/08/2009 at 22:42

    Metro Centre?

Went there today. Not the same. Though the new Yellow Cube or, Qube, is gonna be good.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)09/08/2009 at 22:43

    Good night all!

    Never heard of Yellow Cube.

In the Metro Centre there is different malls, going by colour. The yellow mall is now the, ahem Qube, going to be the entertainment area, cinema, bowling, restraunts, lots of them.

  • RG09/08/2009 at 22:44

    Night Mr Gavin

  • Nikki09/08/2009 at 22:45

    Night, Gavin!

I have driven past it quite a few times but never been in.

  • Pat W09/08/2009 at 22:45

Seems like a good idea. It gives people who don't know about a formula or didn't see a race the basic information without taking too much effort.

    Ta, will do then.

  • Steven Roy09/08/2009 at 22:46

    Bye Nikki

  • Pat W09/08/2009 at 22:46

Execution probably isn't the best word to use...

I'm struggling with Newcastle. Need something intresting other than the nightlife.

    Bingo. Got a good one.

I think they do that on this lake of ours. We could have Aus Vs Canada

  • Sean Golding09/08/2009 at 22:52

Alright, I'm off too. Unfortunately I don't get to do anything as exciting as boating with dragons. I'm off to uni.

    See ya round.

  • Nick09/08/2009 at 22:52

    Bingo. Got a good one.

My village does have a lot of international sport, but it doesn't quite go that far!

  • Alianora La Canta09/08/2009 at 22:59

    I’m cheating by looking on our tourist website place. Still yet to find out why the Millenium Bridge is intresting, why they have a now defunct indoor themepark still there baffles me, and they have something from doon south (Sunderland way) and on the coast. Thats no help {Comment #928}

Wierdly, I'm finding the Sheffield part harder than the Chesterfield part, even though Sheffield has more stuff in it. And don't get me started on the transition between the two...

  • Aitch09/08/2009 at 23:05

Mr C is second in the SofaF1 championship. http://www.sofaf1.com/2009/08/sofaf1-championship-2009-round-10.html

I'm not doing too bad considering I forgot to do predictions for the first two races
