We've reached and passed the mid-point of the summer break, which means it's all downhill from here. Things are quiet with the factories closed, but we are still managing to keep ourselves amused. Here are some of the things we're talking about:
- If you take part in the Sofa F1 Pole Poll, you'll be interested in the latest updates to the table. I didn't do very well in Hungary, which means I am smack dab in the middle of the championship. Mr C, however, is second in the entire championship, having bagged the joint-most points in the last race. Rats!
- We went out and about yesterday, to test out our new Qik app on the G1. Essentially, this means that in the future, we can press a button and be live broadcasting to the world. Quite exciting. Check out some of the stuff we did yesterday.
- I also wrote a post detailing our findings since we started the Shell V-Power experiment. I wasn't expecting to find any difference at all, but I did. Whilst Mr C came to a rather radical and completely different conclusion.
That's all for now. It's Monday again, so let us know what you've got planned for today, or how you're managing to get through if it's a work day. I'll see you in the comments.
Plans for the day, get the chair out, sit down, have a good rest, cold drink in one hand, laptop on my lap. Just chillin out.
If its sunny, I'll do that outside.
Or go down town and have a look around.
Anyways, gonna go. See ya hopefully in the morning.
Night>
Night RG
Ooooo. Outside. Good luck!
night RG
Its all gone a bit spookily quiet for this time of night...
BOOO!
i'm just syncing my ipod to itunes and after everything i've gone through with itunes today it's taking me ages :( i just want to go to sleep now...
i just remembered i am going out for dinner tonight so cant go home and nap after work. Probably should have gone to bed before 3.30am :(
You wouldnt have done a 50m swim if you had :P
Jake, but not quite a jake blog! :D
G'Day everyone. Anyone still up?
up already :-)
yeah, but runing to bed right now. bye!
It's already afternoon here. Days go so quickly...
On CBBC?! I wonder how many of Jake's chatters were really CBBC fans... ;)
Mornin everyone!
morning and afternoon
Aww, bless! He's like a kid in a candy store :-)
Morning all.
Hello there.
Hello, everyone. When the top F1 headline of the day so far involves space tourists, you KNOW it's a quiet day.
hooray off to crown for dinner! It is my favourite place in the city at night simply for the big fireball things as seen at the start of the f1.com australia review 2008 :D
Oh, so that's where those Big Balls of Fire came from. :D What food do they serve?
Joe Saward: There's No Such Thing As A Discount
i am not sure what i am having yet, there is heaps of restaurants in there as well as 2 food courts. And we all know how good i am at decisions :(
Morning all, I wake up start up my laptop to be informed that my laptop encounterd a problem when it shutdown/started up previously. I ask it to check for solutions, the response: "This problem was caused by Windows Vista, which was created by Microsoft Corporation." Brilliant :D
Hahaha. Finally they admit it :)
Hullo :) Note to self. Buy a new phone, this one is going mad. It hates loading ANYTHING. :(
On my way to meet lou and go to london zoo ! :d today is a good day. ;)
Ooh, we want pictures!
MANY pictures ;)
How many pictures do we want?
LOADS
When do we want them?
AS YOU GO ALONG!
I also want to find mr red panda and tell him as lovely as he is, his name is blatent false advertising ;) will get back to you all tonight :)
Exactly, we want to have the experience without being there
Have just realised this means Lukeh won't be going to Greggs for us today. What are we going to do??
Sandwiches?
That DESERVES a screenshot. :D
Pretty much sums up the operating system.
I think it was designed just to show how good windows 7 can be
Shame I've closed it, but it has come up twice now so a third time is likely.
They do have greggs in le londres i believe,
morning all
Kimi's turn to get Asked: http://www.formula1.com/news/interviews/2009/8/9729.html
Go Kimi! He didn't do badly.
They didn't ask how happy he was to see Michael back in the Ferrari
Morning! Did you sleep well?
12.5 hours :D
my body dosen't know what this concept of sleep is!!!!!
! When did you go to bed! You must have gone to bed at night rather than morning!
You must feel better now!
I went to bed at 10.30pm, woke up at 11am, but lets be honest, i slept for about 8 hours in the last 48 and spent the other 40 walking lots, Jon sleepy sleepy
Kinda, when i sleep for that long, i get what the doctor calls "a sleep hangover" but it goes within the hour :)
Afternoon all, seems a bit quiet round here.
How's your "good rest" going?
God read my message, I don't think he likes me, so he's made it rain. And its cold. So that threw the idea of a cold drink out the window.
Hot drink instead?
Winter shutdown
I've ended up with water.
How disappointingly healthy :)
I'm sure five minutes ago Peter Windsor was adament they would get American drivers in the car, now this!
"It is understood that the team is already in talks with both de la Rosa and Wurz, whose vast experience of testing and racing would be of huge use to US F1."
Come on, Pedalo!
I know. But if I have any excuse, I'm staying fit for pre-season.
How many teams after Pedro now?
I believe that to succeed they need a properly experienced driver (like a pedalo) and an American driver to bring in the fans.
He's a popular fellow!
It would make sense. The Red Bull setup works really well - experience + youth.
Surely the BMW folks go somewhere too.
I'm sure that's it... It makes sense!
And Rubens might go somewhere too of course.
Won't they want to go to existing teams for the chance of points and podiums?
If there is somewhere to go
There will be, I expect quite a few changes
Could be exciting
I know we don't mention him here...
But I liked this...
http://sweetf1.blogspot.com/2009/08/schumacher-new-helmet-for-valencia_10.html
what is pedalo experienced in though? he was last seen on page 22, being towed back on a rope.
*cough* plug *cough*
:D
:)
ha!!
Well they could do better. If they had the money I'd buy Nick Heidfeld.
This is the problem with the ban on testing - good young drivers can't put their case forward
He'll finish the race and if you're a startup team that can be all you need some times!
agreed.
Both Pedalo and Wurz have shown themselves to be great development drivers
But wouldn't you then have them as your testers?
According to said ARTICLE:
Not when you only get testing pre-season
nope. wurz bottled it and then wanted to set up a rival team.
he is the last person i'd put in a seat (well almost).
I agree, but how do you develope a car with new drivers with little experience?
are usf1 bound by the 2009 testing regs? i get confused.
i would assume it's a free-for-all until we get to jan 1st?
Oh now I'm confused too
it would be mighty harsh (and probably dangerous) to limit a brand new car to a few tests at the end of the season and a few more before the start of the next one.
however, i wouldn't put it past the fia to do it anyway (in the name of cost-cutting obviously).
Well they are doing it with drivers - Tim's experience for one.
since they're not an F1 team in 2009 yet, i guess not? that said, can they afford it? they can only split testing costs (renting a circuit and the like) three or four ways.
good question. usf1 are also on the wrong side of the sea to share costs anyhow.
Do the IRL teams test? Could they jump in with them?
It's an interesting idea, but unless the IRL teams test on road circuits often (which I doubt), it's not such a feasible idea.
I go out for the evening and when I come back you're all talking about F1? What sort of site do you think this is!
#sorryamy
that is ok. I am in a good mood since Kimi didn't beat Heikki at Ask The Expert. I was worried, as I scrolled down it felt like he wasn't getting any wrong.
As Lukeh has gone out I have decided to find a sausage roll alternative...
Apparently Pret do sausage rolls... who knew!
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo-176
We need Alia
For my dinner we ended up at a restaurant in the actual casino that was full of old people and I got a roast of the day for $7 (3.50 pounds to you foreigners) That is like, 1980 pricing. So cheap!
The casino security guard ID'ed me. I haven't been ID'ed in years. If I was a few years older, I'd take it as a compliment. :D
There is a new thing in Britain where the drinking age is 18 called "think 25". Which they are supposed to ID you if you look under 25. I'm not that far over 25!!! And yet I haven't been IDd once! the cheek of it ;)
ahh yes they are supposed to do that here too but I think they're pretty slack with it because I haven't been ID'ed and I'm still two years away from 25 :D
Ermmm... an F1 site? :D
Them Finns are darn good. :D
not me!
also, dropio be broken, but they're working on it.
I am 18. I definately don't look over 25. Sometimes I don't get asked. It's great, really boosts your ego. ;)
But I'm only 29. Surely I can hold on to my youth a bit longer ;)
why do i get the impression heidfeld has always looked over 25?
I can't believe sidepodcast broke the whole of drop.io!
so, 27 then?
it was only a hd video
You need to scowl more.
Angry people dont get ID'd. They also dont have to pay for busses....
:P
If my 29 year old ex is anything to go by, the way to hold on to your youth is to date girls who were born when you were 10 or so.
Some people mentioned Eddie Izzards insane charity run the other day and there was some confusion over the distances involved.
He is running 30 miles a day.
It's 1100 miles. Which is 30 miles a day for 6 days a week. And will probably take 7 weeks.
Madness... If you want to dontate it's here:
http://www.comicrelief.com/donate/eddie
now you've got me wanting to hunt down the Racing Line I have with him in it as a 19 year old.
can you donate common sense?
He definitely deserves cash for that, I don't think I've run 30 miles cumulatively in my whole life.
Katherine is (*shhhh don't read this bit Katherine*) older than me. Normally I would say how much by but since I just told you how old I am then it would be really give her age away.
That would seem a good starting point.
He's just started marathon 13 today!
I belive they cant test their car untill the current season ends.
This is a bit unfair as the 2009 development will carry over for the current teams, as well as the fact both Ferrari and Brawn have been seen testing 2010 parts already this season
and that would end terribly for us if you did that. Who would film your exploits!
stupid, stupid, stupid.
stupid.
i'm now wondering if katherine is a lurker...
I've decided young Nick Heidfeld kind of reminds me of Steve Coogan.
She came very close to commenting yesterday! But I don't think she actually reads the site.
And you are right!
He sort of does I guess. I can see where you're coming from.
was that at the point you wanted jailbreak your new phone?
One of my friends is dating an 18 year old, we went out with her and her friends last week, and it made me feel so old...
It's really her phone on loan... I didn't dare mention that to her! :)
He looked like a man destined for McLaren. But Kimi cut that dream short.
we can forgive him for that, he's not Nick Heidfeldenen after all.
Wow. I have only just finally caught up with reading all the e-mail I was sent in my week off! Crazy!
Now to actually reply to some of them!
M'lady is older than me. It's not making me feel any less young. :D
But wouldn't it be unfair then if McLaren end up replacing Kovalainen with Rosberg (without the -enen)?
Just ordered myself an android phone... must have been all that subliminal advertising yesterday :P
oh most certainly. Perhaps its time for a promotion for Henri Karjalainen
YES!
We will show those iphone people!
More than 100 e-mails a day. This has been crazy. Maybe I shouldn't go on holiday.
Or I should just delete them all when I come back?
Sounds like a plan!
what's email?
i am envisioning a new page on spc, with embedded qik players, for everybody to live stream to.
- what's alex up to on channel 1?
- on channel 2, nick writing a blog post...
amy, did you set up a qik account?
I did, it's kind of addictive.
did you tell us where it is?
www.qik.com/amyfulton with a whopping 0 videos at the moment :D
that addictive, eh? i shall subscribe.
this going to be ace :)
while I was out and about I wanted to live stream the fireballs but they only do a fire show on the hour, and everytime I was outside it was the wrong time :(
I am also planning some sneaky live streaming at the F1 exhibit at the museum.
a walk around albert park?
oooh I haven't been down there in ages. What a lovely idea :D
sidepodcast... encouraging people to go outside.
What are you doing man?
it's okay. so long as people have phones, they'll be safe. with live video streaming, even safer.
Time for epic haircut...
my hair is about 9cm long at its longest point at the monmrnt... time to annihilate it!
Yeah. What I need is wave!
There is some bad language in this. So please don't click through if you don't like that kind of thing. But here is an interesting article about the Kindle and ChangeMediaFutureChangeFutureMediaMediaFutureChange
http://www.randsinrepose.com/archives/2009/08/08/the_book_stalker.html
my bookshelf is in a closet because I hate having stuff on display. The only way I could have it not in my closet would be if it had doors :D
see, i can't imagine a world with books anymore. problem is amazon don't want to helps us brits out :(
amazon are meanies :(
that they are.
I feel like bouncing round right now :D:D
(there isn't a smiley that does that is there?)
how come?
If there is, we wouldn't encourage it ;)
For a reason yet unknown to me, the php on a site I'm working on has started working the way it was supposed to. I've also got an RSS feed going, so I'm just really happy :)
It was weird that I was trying to articulate last week the sentiment that Rands captured right there.
I am sure I will look back and laugh at myself from my mooncar :)
after reading that I am worried what my book collection says about me. It is 99% non-fiction. I can't remember the last time I read a book that wasn't factual.
'cept for the ikea bookshelf bit?
yay!
I'm happy enough to let the "why has it started working?" slide :D
hehe. was it not giving an error?
:)
Well yes... We have 10 Ikea bookcases in our house. And 1 cd rack thing, and 2 habitat bookcases which I forgot about the last time I did a count. I know they aren't hand crafted but honestly I wouldn't have made that many book cases yet if I'd started 10 years ago!
It took me almost an hour to saw a small thing on Saturday. It's not my bailiwick ;)
But yes. I would love nicer book cases.
Beverly Turner's book?
:)
Way back last year at Uni our web unit involved using php to create the website end for a content managment system which we also made. At the time for whatever reason only the extension .php5 would work and it baffled our lecturer as well. I just figured I'd play around now and took out the 5 and it all still works. :D
IKEA Rocks. Fact.
The biggest IKEA in Scandinavia will open in my town next month. w00t!
our local one extended their opening hours as of today til 9pm every weeknight. Words can't express my joy.
:)
:D I regret that I ever put money in her pocket.
are you / were you running php on windows by any chance?
yes i am.
I know the answer I know the answer! ;)
figures :)
microsoft have been doing heaps of work to make php work better on windows lately. i would guess a service pack, or some kind of update for iis fixed it.
go on.
Awesome, now just have to hope people have been updating their computers
dropio looks to be fixed
I can finally see the sausage roll!
I'm hungry.
Did Anyone suggest 'Apple' for the new baby name BTW?
with all due respect, you're nuts running php on windows. neither php nor mysql have a decent caching mechanism, and memcached doesn't work well on windows.
ideally you'd use: php > memcached > mysql on a linux/unix system
iis works better with asp.net and it's built in caching.
and here ends the advice you didn't ask for ;)
this no?
http://www.plus2net.com/php_tutorial/php_iis_installation.php
I just googled something to illustrate it...
But he's right.
not sure.
i think the issue relates to running both php4 and php5 on windows machines. or at least it used to.
microsoft have made all sorts of improvements in the area. i think they realised they need the wordpress crowd and have been working like crazy to turn things around.
last time i checked, the sql server installer tried to include php, wordpress and then mysql. complete madness.
I feel like Rubens reading that - it's all just "Bla bla bla bla bla-ing" to me :P
reading it twice didn't help then?
Yeah sorry for the double quote :( Spam fingers hasn't used his netbook for two weeks :(
hehe!
I had a devil of a time trying to run IIS + Apache + MS SQL + MySQL on Windows the other month. They aren't good friends.
I'm using what I have and what I was taught, but thanks for advice :P. The teaching of php and MySql was crammed into one 3 hour lessons in 5-6 weeks. I'm happy enough I've created my own Content Managment System, which maybe a bit rough around the edges but it does its job ;)
the terrible people who regularly put money in my bank, insist on doing something like that too.
i should also say that i'm not following my own advice as sidepodcast.com only runs: php > mysql
conveniently skipping the whole memcached thing. but when we move from mediatemple we'll add that important bit to the equation.
It's a pain isn't it! Yes it was for those people that I did it. Presumably not the same people - but you get the idea.
Are you a 419 scammer or something?
good man. can we see it?
the site or the CMS? :P
The CMS I'll have to screenshot, can't be giving out the password to it ;)
But everyone ends up having identical furniture in their homes...
So what? I don't care as long as my home looks nice and it didn't cost lots to furnish!
Books will stay around... its a bit like horses. people said cars would make them redundant... but they are still around and cost more than cars...
good analogy. i don't want a horse either though :)
Printed books will stay. Printed newspapers, on the other hand, probably won't.
But a book about Horses on your Kindle?
Other than the free newspapers you get at the train station?
But isnt it a bit like wearing a uniform at work?
a lovely horse?
we can't buy one. we tried yesterday. apparently european 3g is a problem for them or something?
:P
They'll be around for a while. But will it be around in 10-20 years time if the Kindle well and truly takes off? I doubt it.
they are more convinient though, so i expect they will be around for a while yet...
unless we start giving people ocular implants and dowmloading news to thier brain...
where do i sign up for that?
well, i was thinking that, but then, what's inconvenient about 1 Kindle that automatically updates itself every day, or even more often than that? less paper wasted, and more room for customized news. not to mention that you'll only need to get 1 Kindle.
:D
We are Spicies 0001
Imagine plucking words out of thin air! A world where steel birds fly! ITS THE FOOTUR!!!
What kind of a race name is this:
Helluva Good! At The Glen
:D
but i can pick up a paper, not worry about what i do with it, where i leave it, read it then leave it for the next guy...
I cant get a virus, run out of battery or have it stolen
I saw somebody using one on the train the other day... But presumably they'd loaded the stuff up ahead of time.
i guess so. but i think a combination of the Kindle's potential and our potential environmental situation by then will make it tough sledding for newspapers, especially those that rely solely on ad revenue.
Or to give it it's full name - Helluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at the Glen
you can import them. but i've no idea how you'd fill it with anything.
can you jailbreak a kindle?
It wasn't actually half-bad, but the Sour Cream Dips really puts me off the name. :D
As somebody who can only buy books when he leaves the country (In English), I could see a use for the kindle...
the thing is, it being That London, they may have been from the states.
DAN!!
It had better not disappoint with a name like that.
Seriously, how stupid are the sponsors in NASCAR these days?
http://www.thebookseller.com/news/91712-amazon-close-to-uk-launch-date-for-kindle.html
Wasn't there a NASCAR race before named the Die Hard 400 or something similar? :D
Cant you just connect it to you computer and download from amazon.com?
If they are fussy use an American ip address...
ooh, christine found something that they'd signed up waterstones too. not sure if that was confirmed or rumour though.
how do you pay for it?
Buy vouchers and use them
US credit card, I guess?
i don't have one of those.
would that work?
Paypal?
It worked for me about 4 years ago on something they didnt like me buying from the uk
Laters all. About to cycle home then off for a short run as an 'installation lap' as prep for a 5km challenge next month...
on amazon??
i'm not buying a kindle on that evidence alone. but i do like the sound of it.
Good afternoon folks
Is the Kindle that big a deal?
I thought it was rather niche. An emerging technology I suppose
Maybe, I'll see
good luck!
When they release it here i expect it will be priced £400+
it will flop here
They just mentioned the full name in the invocation. Goodness, it sounds Helluva Awkward. :D
interesting.
i'd consider that price.
That's how you could do something on iTunes for a while... Lots of people sold American iTunes vouchers on ebay
really?
Thats 50-100 books you could have bought though
When they release it here there will be an iPhone version of Kindle like there is in the states already. I can read very happily on that... But perhaps not for too long.
Hi all
That needs a photoshop
evening!
That's the killer, the Kindles screen technology - E Ink - gives days of usability on a single charge
Amazon ecards available on ebay apparently
Hey Steven
:D
Hey Steven.
Yep. As soon as they enter the rules apply unless of course they can borrow a 2008 car then they can do whatever they like going by Ferrari
Yup, Mr C knows I call this "going all html again"
well technically its going all php, but thats neither here nor there ;)
NASCAR saying they have 3 drivers in the field with F1 experience. That would be Montoya, Speed, and... that's it, right? Are they actually counting Jeff Gordon and that 1 test he had with Williams?
to be fair to Bassano I don't think we were talking about HTML last time either.
I do like the phrase.
I was thinking the same thing...mystery f1 driver please stand up!
No, Sony have signed up with Waterstones.
Isn't Villeneuve racing?
He didn't have enough sponsorship to make it to Cup.
Ah right. I'll return to the corner.
They seem to have been watching f1 with all the pointless weaving...
:D
Maybe they got tips from JPM. :D
The thing is on the Kindle front. If you have to wait until Christmas for a UK Kindle it is worth it. Because a US one will need travel adaptors for power, won't ever work for over the air subscriptions.
I think it would be definately worth waiting.
It might be worth waiting longer than that, i expect they will come in with a crazy price for the first few months.
but it will be the new coolness :)
I am in a restaurant called Tas.
I would pay a little more to get rid of the bookcases and regain some space in my living room.
I am really not sure it will catch on.
They must have their doubts to otherwise they would have launched it here already
That is true, books do take up space, but you can lend them to people, they look nice and...
Books tell you so much about a person... its the first thing i nose around! I cant exactly say to someone "do you mind if i browse your kindle so i can jufge you"
they were going to launch 6 months ago but the networks wouldn't go for their prices.
Is that the Turkish place?
That hardly fills me with confidence!
yes. I am going to have some Lebanese wine. I have always enjoyed Chateux Musar's red, but haven't seen their White available anywhere.
Hmm. I don't see a problem with asking what someone has on their Kindle. Plus you can do it out and about, rather than having to wait to be invited to their house.
that is very true... mobile judgement!
Get me some felafels please
I have no idea why i dont watch more NASCAR, they seem to be doing everything so much better than f1. I just looked at what they offered on their website and saw f1 dying.
My sister discovered just how dangerous outside is: http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/00002-jpg
but i wouldn't. technically that's half a macbookpro i could've bought. but kindle to me would be worth £300(ish). i'd consider £400, but i don't know where you got that figure from?
but, with a uk address, can i use them to buy use books for kindle?
they had to move their race to monday because it rained yesterday. it's something like the 3rd time they've done it this season. that pretty much sums up why NASCAR will never beat F1 for me.
ouch, looks nasty. she's okay right?
Though if I'm honest, not wanting to sound bad here, but the t-shirt is rather appropriate
American companies seem to base their prices by replacing the dollar symbol with a pound symbol.
It was $399 on the US amazon for the new kindle
ahh, apologies.
Ouch!
An appropriate T-shirt too
What happened?
agreed.
Ouch. That looks sore
agreed ;)
if they had their doubts, why develop it in the first place?
You could just make up an address if they aren't sending anything physically?
People often forget that North American prices are excluding local taxes
Though cheaper than Europe, it's not a great deal more than 20% most of the time
i take back what i said. sorry, inside good. she okay?
Billing address?
She fell of my bike. The bike is fine. She is too - mostly.
exactly. amazon already have my address and cc. making up a whole personality just for an ebook seems a tad ott even for me.
It woeks well in america, especially with newspapers which are mainly local, its often difficult to get non local papers, say the new york times outside of major cities
when it was released their it was before smart phones really took off, they are launching here to a market of people who will already own a smartphone, which is a lot harder in my opionon
I was thinking skateboard or similar
Moving vehicles are dangerous without roofs
Will watch the Glen from bed.
Night, everyone.
Is there any proprietary DRM involved?
but we already have a smart phone. giggles already has x2 smartphones.
G'night Journeyer
i believe so. yup.
Going on a bike ride on Wed, so fills me with confidence
that much damage from a push-bike?
Don't forget your PPE
take your phone r.g!
parting shot:
smart phones are too small to read anything very long. they can't replace the kindle.
agreed and night sir.
The 2nd version was released very recently though, not sure how well that has done
Last time my handlebars came loose and had no allen key. The time before the wheel came loose from the handlebars and ended up going over. I hate bikes.
I see where my sister went wrong. I told her to take the phone but she just said: Ja ja
:)
I always do.
But you guiys are techies...
they have to convince joe public he needs 2 devices to make it pay...
I will be interested to see how it does, if it ends up at a reasonable price i might consider getting one. but i think it will need massive marketing and very cheap content to make it work over here,.
Yet you're doing it again
Have you tried stabilisers? They come with all-terrain tyres now? ;)
Something doesn't have to be massive to still be sold. Netbooks aren't exactly mainstream, but there's a good business to be made still.
I'm a nutter. It keeps trying to kill me, but I still use it.
*wonders if doohickey will work on a kindle*
Evening. I'm not properly here yet but I saw this arrive just as I loaded Seesmic and thought I should to pass it on ;-)
"isitmayyet Latest Q&A by @CurtCavin mentions a fifth AGR car at Sonoma for Franck Montagny. "
Getting back on the horse is the only way, figuratively speaking of course
:)
Thats true, but the kindle has more overheads, distribution with telecoms, content rights, technical support.
But it certainly doesnt have to sell at iphone levels to be successful. The only issue is how long it would be supplied with content for if the numbers arent great.
You have already convinced me to buy an android hero!
We need a link
hehehe. i'm not saying you should buy one. i'm just saying i want too.
am looking
live commenting an irl race?
If you're bailing out of F1 you can always be an IndyCar podcast
there may already be one of those :)
Ari to name his cabinet this week
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77613
Even though i used to hate it there is another american racing series which has impressed me massively this evening
Evening all, just been enjoying the latest offering from Bruno Mantovani.
Max Papis (sp?) is apparently the mystery f1 driver in the race
Ah sorry, I found the link and it isn't as 'probable' as I thought it was.
Usually Curt Cavin is the go-to guy for the 'beneath the surface', 'almost certain but not announced' rumours so I was expecting something a little more solid than this, also because the guy who linked it tends to focus on the more solid rumours. Here's the quote from the link:
Very much a 'maybe' then, but that's more than he was before when he wasn't even being mentioned. At least we now know he's being shopped around the IRL market.
I'm off for a sec, when I'm back I'll hunt around for where the questioner "saw" the rumour and see if this is just the manager hyping him up...
:D :D
I love the way Bruno does what he does
I like the stork.
I'm not liking what I'm hearing about Ari's campaign not being seen in the paddock as very credible
Hearting the well bit. I know I shouldn't, but its true.
At least he is being discussed for that kind of drive. That has to be good.
Yeah, guess that was Hymie
Sidepod-Aussie-in-NASCAR update: Marc Ambrose is in the lead at the Glen.
Hello everyone!
It was
Which coffee liqure should I buy. Options on drop.
Looking now
Hazelnut
Russian coffee.
Go with the Baileys
Only if there's Butterscoth Scnapps to go with it ;)
He he, Stefano sounds like he's saying Shell Alex :)

seconded.
Andronov goes for Vodka, shock!
:)
What is the story behind this? I cannot find it in the comments. I hope whoever that is is OK.

Kathi's sister fell off of Kathi's bike
It seems she is relatively ok, not sure about the bike though
Danke.
So
I am rubbish at blogging. I just can't keep up.
awwww!
Kathi said the bike was in better condition than the sister
The t-shirt is very appropriate :D
I know... let the Boston Philharmonic sing me my sympathy.
Is it just me or this season has some insaine breaks between races?
that's very rude for a family site!
;)
Why do you think I didn't refer to it by name :D
Looks like the Russian one is it!
What did you have to eat? Looks nice
Katherine has just told me about the email n walk application for the iPhone! You can type but superimposed under it is live video from the camera :)
I need sidepodcast n walk :)
mr c, one for the list :)
(Katherine is bitterly regretting telling me)
Evenin' chaps and chapesses. What's the good word? :P
awwwwwwww man!!
Bikes are bad
I read about that, not the ideal angle but still a good idea
Figured as much :)
Hey Scott
That list never gets any smaller does it? ;)
Forgive me if this has been brought up already, but about bleedin' time and all...
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77613
not once.
Steven mentioned it earlier
Come on Ari!
See-through Doohickey is quite specialist though
ADAC is huge. We already know they hate Max anyway. But then again, it's just one club. We're yet to see just how many he has supporting him compared to Todt. I'm hoping (probably in vain) that it's more.
You need a split screen. One half showing sidepodcast and on showing where you are going
tis true. yes :)
Somone needs to invent an adjustable prism thing with a gavitometer so it always shows what's directly ahead...
So I have to ask because I a writing a blog post about it. Which one would you take if you were starting a new team: Pedalo or Wurz. I am leaning towards Wurz for some reason. I like his CV a bit better. Besides, you don't have Campos, Force India, and McLaren competing for his signature for a deal.
or... doohickey glasses?
I think the email thing just lays the text over the image, which might make you sick when reading it?
Why have I only just caught on to Florence + The Machine?
What a great album
neither. i'd take nick or rubens.
I'm still drawn to Pedalo.
haha, its just a matter of time untill the ocuilar implants and we are all borg!
Ant
Was very quick back in the Free Practice, 3rd driver days
Some of us already are
or him.
never wurz and certainly not pedalo.
Id go for Ant...
Franck? ;)
Wurz may do better with the longer chassis for next year ;)
I side with Mr C here.
Coffee evidence on the drop
as i said earlier. he wanted to set up a rival team. and he bottled it when in a williams.
I like Nick but I don't see him making that switch unless he has too. He also would be expensive.
Rubens... I don't know if I trust the guy (Sorry Lou and whoever.) If he is that much off the pace compared to Button, I can't imagine him in a slug of a car next year.
Actually, I think both of those guys deserve another chance.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo-180
:P
Ive got a funny fealing Rubens is getting ready to retire, I dont know if he always has, but he seems to be spending a lot of time back and brazil and going on holiday with his kids.
I think felipe's accident might effect his future more than felipe
He may be cheaper if unemployed
Franck does.
That reminds me, I should bring in a bottle of liquor for my office drawer next to my celebration scotch and three glasses.
I need something to go with my morning coffee.
Though if his development/feedback skills are that goood...

That's how it starts ;)
Big NASCAR crash
Looks like a mini Guinness
Everyones ok, but it was nasty
You got a live feed anywhere?
for a small fortune a month on skyplayer :P
Wurz's problem is his physical size. He comes across better for me and when McLaren had both Wurz was top dog.
LINK: http://www.justin.tv/nascarpovvver
He was pushed out of Williams because Toyota wanted to give Kaz a run
mostly down to poor circuit design, and a tyre barrier bouncing a car back onto the track instead of absorbing the impact
I don't rate Ant at all. H would not be on my shopping list at all if I was running any team
WOW, that was nasty! Ouch!
That the Glen for ya. It's old, nasty, and really needs a lot of work done to it to bring it back to the stature it deserves. It really hasn't been renovated stince they added the outer loop in the 70's.
Now off to see the play my pretend girlfriend at the young vic with my actual girlfriend ;)
can we choose where you sit?
:D
Can we tell you how to behave during the play? That could be fun before you are thrown out.
Waterloo...one of my favourite drinking zones!
Only if he records it
Under the bridge? :)
And shouts, "I dont want to hear all this, bla blah bla blah"
Should he also blame the theatre's team?
Cool, Marcos Ambrose is 3rd :D
BFI?
I like the beer garden at the camel and artichoke, young vic has a good bar, and there is anotherone tucked behind the park.
My communist friend loves the cuban bar, they have good cocktails, but the prices are not socialist!
Good spanish restaurant on the South Bank too
In fact, I love that whole bank-side thing
Hatchback NASCAR!
Sorry, my printscreen didnt work :(

"I don't need no V-Power" :)
This is good, i was having 2nd thoughts about getting this phone, this has alleviated my fears!
You'll have to stream at the same time and do that thing where it's day in one and night in the other!
SPC has a Peugeot :D
it's lucky franck doesn't drive for audi!
Would make for an interesting Panel Show
With a Cd Playerayerayerayerererererer...
I'm tempted to say a Top Gear-related joke there, but I'd better not to save myself :D
And a slow clock.
:D
Sidepodtime
ooooh yes! and giggles on parade lap.
you are welcome to donate towards a better one, sir.
Need a Qik App, stat!
:D
Nice plug :)
It wasn't about your car, it was about Audi's. That's all I'll say on that one, lest I lose my head!
Do you have a device it works on?
ahh. i have no idea what on earth you're talking about :)
I meant a Qik iPhone App
Tis for the best really
Is it about BMW drivers buying Audis?
Aha
Aye, I think it is
Then that is all that needs saying :-)
I am now in comment-catchup mode.
Wow, nascar just had a cam on a tyre changers helmet and had him commentate the stop!
Bernie start taking notes!
I agree and I think the FIA should hold a group test or two for the new teams at a mutually convenient date/location.
what??
Now that's really interesting
Second that, c'mon Bernie!
It was genius, they have to do 5 nuts on each wheel and 2 wheels
NASCAR is a one language audience
oooh. damn.
IRL teams sometimes test at Le Seb Ring (short version) and at a place near Houston in Feb/March, as well as oval tests. I think they have been cutting back too though.
but f1 team radio is all in 1 language
Good point
Plenty of Americans have English as a second language
We're in this boat together.
Zing!
I think F1 has lost something since all the communication has een in English. I liked it when all the on screen graphics were in the local language
The directors are much better now though...
They've been doing that for years.
Where do you think all the cool on-screen graphics come from?
Are you saying Bernie doesn't do them track-side on his laptop?
:P
Of course not! It's Nelson Piquet in between tweets!
That's an excellent post. I have a small collection of books and I don't intend to get rid of them. Sometimes you need to decamp yourself from all the screens burning your eyeballs away, and get lost in printed words. These days I do it with Autosport mag, maybe I should decamp from the racing as well...
Oh yeah, of course :)
I think the Kindle would burn your eyes less, as it has no backlight.
Isn't that what the SPC podcast is for?
On the basis that nothing can possibly go wrong I am going outside for half an hour ish.
Is there some one we should call in case you don't come back?
Is their a print version of doohickey on the list?
Perhaps. Sometimes I like turning pages instead of scrolling... until my hands get inky or I lose my place.
SPC for Kindle :)
I have my phone so call me.
OK
yes:
ctrl+p
I can understand people being sentimental about books. For me, I have a stack of books on my shelves that are just gathering dust. I haven't looked at them in at least six months.
If I had a Kindle, I would carry it with me, and I would read more. Therefore, to me, it is worth the money.
:P
I can't get the auto refresh to work :(
paper = fail?
Vrety much so
This might why when I had the stats site back along (I mentioned it a few weeks ago), I never really got my head around php locally and found myself uploading to the online server which was running Linux just to see if things worked.
*very
what happens if you write in a comment. does anyone reply?
oops... "this might be why...."
Only the other half of my split personality
Maybe I should try leaving it on the train
I love my books, i nomaly have several on the go at once... I have different ones for different times, i normaly have a small paperback i can fit in my pocket for the train and a hardback on my bedside table...
Me too. Don't see to have the time.
Which is fine.. I still don't think I'd have the time, and I know I don't have the money.
my spelling has gone to pot today!
yup. i'll say this carefully, cause i do want to annoy ya...
you needed a machine running some flavour of unix/linux. there are many choices available, but i won't force any particular manufacturer on you.
:P
What if you wanted to read the hardback on the train?
I did. Those days are sadly over now. Sometimes I wish I'd stuck with it.
I'll just back away from the other comment..
where does the train go? Is there another SPCr at the other end?
;)
No, it'd probably be just in my carriage
I havent had that problem, i have 3 on the go untill that pits book arrives, only 1 hardback, so have lots of options...
Interesting.
Max Papis
Last night's RDTCC test race is up on Youtube! :D I'm in the Volvo :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1krNZaJMc4
the other thing about kindle is that it's instant. nick just said "until that book arrives".
on friday night we wanted to watch planes, trains and automobiles. we decided that because it came up in the comments, and we instantly downloaded it and started watching it there and then.
ordering stuff and waiting seems a bit pointless to me these days.
Plus, we have already established you are the MTV generation.
tis true.

I hope to watch F1 before I get bored (we are the sidepodgeneration)
you.have.to.sing.that!
not yet, i will wait untill i actualy get the phone... i still have a few days to change my mind...
Agreed
evening :)
I make too many promises.
Oh shoot, sidepodradio
Distance Seliing laws also allow you 14 days to change your mind once received
[And get an iPhone]
Nah, I'm sure it'll be great
Hey Lou
Hullo
yo!
ooops, mtv got me.
Mr C still knows how to be down with the kids.
hehe :)
Oh lord.
If apple sold them with no locks on amaon i might consider one...
I just have to keep watching this video
Mr C on the wheels of steel, coding like a mofo
amazon
Chamone, sidepodbrothers.
:D :D
that looks lovely!
I like the flash suport on webpages... with that i can argue its basicly all i need from a netbook...
true, except for the moment i'm guessing it's flash lite, rather than full flash?
I am not sure. MrFlashMan just said Flash
Well that beats the iPhone hands down on that front
I keep getting emails from Facebook telling me I've requested to reset my password - except, I haven't.
Usually I disregard them because when you mouseover the link, the actual link doesn't match the one in the text. This time it does match so I'm wondering if it is genuine..
oh, he said 80% of flash
I'd log into facebook and change your password...
yeah, arrington's site says:
"The HTC Hero phone will come with Flash Lite 3.1, which means it’ll be able to cope with anything written with ActionScript 2.0"
not sure our videos will play on flash lite. however, it is only temporary with full flash coming soonish.
Sounds phishy
I was thinking the same. Was just hunting their support section to see if was a known issue.
will you be streamin on qik from now on?
I wish I had a breaking news jingle... although this is the wrong site again, really.
http://mashable.com/2009/08/10/facebook-acquires-friendfeed/
no. not live shows, we have bigger plans for that using our own streaming server.
"FriendFeed.com will continue to operate normally for the time being. We’re still figuring out our longer-term plans for the product with the Facebook team"
nooooo!!
It makes no sense! Facebook is allergic to RSS!
FriendFace BookFeed
Cos you don't see that ads that way
i love friendfeed.
they'll ruin it with pesky questions about favourite films and what kind of chocolate bar am i?
I see plenty of ads via RSS. Facebook is just stoopid.
That's why I got bored of it too
are usf1 bound by the 2009 testing regs? i get confused.
i would assume it’s a free-for-all until we get to jan 1st? {Comment #85}
USF1 became bound to all the regulations, including the 2009 ones, the moment its application for 2010 was accepted. As such, it is bound by the same testing restriction as anybody else. However, it does still have all eight straight-line/constant-radius tests available to it, so it could do somewhat more intensive testing than other teams in that regard.
Any team which is vying for the seat currently held by BMW can test as much as it likes unless and until it wins that seat.
It's definitely not a free-for-all for the teams that are accepted though. Apart from eight straight-line/constant-radius tests, the teams only get three "rookie" test days (at least Michael Schumacher won't be a "rookie" this time round!) in November and December. The free-for-all only begins on January 1st, and even then there's a 15,000km limit.
Woah, check out Nick Heidfeld's... err... dancing?
I am back from outside. Didn't get my feet wet in the woods or fall off someone else's bike.
Is he celebrating BMW leaving?
you had us all worried.
Maybe he only heard the good part of the good news/bad news story
"Hey Nick, Robert's not driving for the team next year..."
With the beard and those moves, it looks like he should be a Kentucky blue grass dance off.
Haha
Hello, everyone. When the top F1 headline of the day so far involves space tourists, you KNOW it’s a quiet day. {Comment #22}
Has this one got any more foundation than the Hamilton version of the headline last year?
I went for a run earlier! That's completely outside!
treasure hunt?
What is the story? I went looking for it earlier then forgot.
I thought about going outside. Does that count?
Unless you count dog poo as treasure, no. I'm training for a 5km run in a month's time...
Do you remember that joke we made on the sidepodpanel about firing Bernie and Flav into space? Turns out they really do want to go up there!
How can two heads that big fit into one tin can?
Too many F1 insiders around this place, how are we supposed to be mean about them if they're all here
:D
Does anyone have a copy of the Now Show from 31st July?
#GMM: Flavio and Bernie will be shot into space as part of the madien flight for Virgin Space venture. It is reported that Sir Richard Bronson will forget that they are up when Max Molsey comes over to lecture Sir Branson that he has violated the 2010 testing regulations with too many test flights.
probably
Yup.
Good evening all :)
Sorry, Branson not Bronson.
Lukeh! Did you steal any cute animals for me?
Any chance you could dropio it for me? pleeease? I missed it because I went on holiday and the BBC have that silly 7-day policy on availability :(
Hydraulic ram
Sadly no :( they had these things called cages that stopped me from doing so. Blasted cages.
Can I just say, Mars Ice Cream was such a wonderful idea
The play was fantastic. Very graphic of course - but in the context it seemed quite tame. But excellent. It had a really interesting technique in it. All of the play was based on recordings from real people. All of the actors were wearing headphones throughout and could hear the original words in their ears. Very interesting and well done.
Damn it. It's almost as though they expect it.
What about Snickers and Crunchie?
Now that does sound intriguing
Snickers, No
Crunchie, yes
OI! SNICKERS! NOOOOOOOOOO!
Exactly
The Snickers one is excellent, haven't tried Mars or Crunchie.
Stop...You guys are making me want ice cream...
I only like Yorkie with nuts in. Other chocolate/nut combinations don't really do it for me
Don't know why
Cheers Christine! Much appreciated!
Because chocolate is about as perfect as possible and putting nuts in chocolate is like putting gravel in custard
ooppss.. i didn't know of this. i would have sent a few pics in otherwise... well i say would have, i need to sort out email on my phone.
What about caramel? That works
Hot gravel or cold? :P
What play is this?
Plus we were too busy hunting down the infamous red panda!
cages are goooood. i would have walked away with a Lemur, otter and a baby meerkat otherwise..
that too.
Alex went to see The Girlfriend Experience
Did you compare the meerkats?
It's still not better than choclate
haha, no.. but we did watch them for ages.... lol
Anyone been to Monkey World? It's fab!
Nothing beats Tiramisu!
are there Lemurs?
You would think if they wanted to raise money to protect animals in the wild they would sell some of the cute little ones.
I love that site. I can't believe they actually did it.
They never have that in the newsagents nor the vending machine at work
Profiteroles
That is the most horrible, hateful, murderous thing ever.
i know! i'm now very much in favour of a sidepodzoo... as long as there are Lemurs.
Blasphemer!
:D
And I've had it in Italy.
Yup
WAREHAM, DORSET by the way
There is a new thing in Britain where the drinking age is 18 called “think 25?. Which they are supposed to ID you if you look under 25. I’m not that far over 25!!! And yet I haven’t been IDd once! the cheek of it ;) {Comment #99}
I got IDd 18 months ago when buying a pair of scissors. The scissors were the cheapest ones in the shop and I was in a hurry to use them to make a card to be posted within the hour. It was a bit awkward because the only proof of age I had on me was a student card (and the rules are such that the pass I had wasn't considered strictly binding - the university didn't have to ask for proof before placing the date on the ID). After the shop manager was called in and a five-minute discussion ensued, I was allowed to buy the scissors in the end because the normal minimum age for buying scissors in the UK is 16 and my card showed I was 20.
The kicker? The scissors had the label "Suitable for age 3+" on them. They were, after all, a pair of designated children's scissors. Such a pair of scissors can legally be bought in the UK by anyone of the indicated age...
Had I really been less than 3, I don't think there would have been a five-minute debate on whether I should be sold the scissors - they'd have made an announcement along the lines of, "Would the parent or guardian of a lost two-year-old girl please come and collect her from the counter?" I haven't felt so belittled for over a decade...
You realise that means we are now on to the third one. First one has animals begining with P. The next one has animals begining with G. Now you want one with animals begining with L. Three zoos and still no meerkats
Dorset! that's ages away... do they sell the lemurs/ let you look after them?
does that mean we get to have lions and stuff in the third one?
When you pass your test, you can drive there
It's so worth it for the Orangutans
i know... but there are Lemurs near folkstone too..that's much closer :D
Yes but we will need to keep them away from the lemurs
but i like lemurs! :P
seriously... if i ever go to Dorset or around there i'll definitely go for a visit.
that okay the lemurs can stay at my house :P
But do they have Capuchins?
Nah it isn't, it's only up the road.
Lemurs, otters and meerkats, oh my!

I don't care if Monica Bellucci made it for you - you ain't getting a Christmas Card from me now. Ever!
You can go to the tank museum too...
Have i mentioned i want a pet capybara?
I got carded in Phoenix trying to get into a bar - I'm 37!
To make it worse, when we got in, they had stoppped serving alcohol half an hour ago!
I'm defending all my decisions to say Tiramisu is awful. Why. Becaue it is.
awful is a bit harsh. it is posh though.
If Monica Bellucci made me Tiramisu, I wouldn't be complaining about a thing.
Nothing
I went to a Safari park like Christine did lately and I kept singing this song
capawhatnow?
When you have it at a restaurant homemade it's fantastic!
I leaned a lot about corona from some mexican horsemen in phoenix.
They drink it very slowley all day, the lime doesnt get pushed in it keeps the flies off the rim
they also put a tiny amount of salt in before eash swig to fizz it up
I differ from that statement.
Near the bottom of the page
http://www.monkeyworld.co.uk/topic.php?TopicID=28&Template=standard#
Whyzat? You can't hate the Tiramisu without a reason!
does that mean the second zoo has giraffes?? :D
I was drinking with a Mexican too
I suppose there are more than a few in Arizona
And some of them are Amy's
aww! not as cute as lemurs though :P
Wait till you see a baby Orang
You haven't read Christine's blog post. Giraffe's were the reason for the second zoo. And giant pandas
Uber cute little ginger fellas
Too many reasons, probably mainly all the coffee/cocoa whatever
I can't see a lemur without thinking about John Cleese
But it goes together like Cheese and Baghdad! And you get to annoy your wife when you eat it by singing that!
I don't have a wife/brother/sister to annoy so no point.
I'm sure your parents would find it equally as irritating
When you do, don't forget to drop.io it
hi all
I have too many things to dropio at the moment.
Put it on the list ;)
Good evening/afternoon sir
Will do.
Hi Guille
Hello guille
there is a blog post on the sidepodzoos?
hey guille
No, but I might have to do that!
Is it on smarter than your average?
http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2009/08/03/walk-with-the-animals-well-drive-actually/
guille, before you even think about moving. where do you sit on the great tiramisu debate... heaven or hatred (there appears to be no inbetween)?
it reminds me too much to one of Madagascar's lemurs. :-)
it's been more than 5 years from my last visit to a zoo (not counting the poor bear at Bern...) :-(
oh, can't I seat in the middle? I can excuse myself due to my lack of experience: I must have eaten tiramisu two or three times in my life, and I don't even remember what it taste like...
that good eh? cheers ;)
I take that as a good viewpoint.
well, yes. you can take that as 'is not good enough to leave a mark in my memory' ;-)
i have read this... i wasn't behind... (phew) but there were no comments when i read it, so i missed the thing about the second park.
If only Mr C could come up with something like that when he is behind with Christine's blog
*runs*
NASCAR has become a trending topic in Twitter. What gives?
i'm not behind! (no unless she has a post today then yes i am behind)... i hadn't seen the comments...
They give their fans more than a live timing screen designed in 1988?
I don't know when I became such an ogre about my blog? It's only Mr C that is supposed to keep up.
You mean there isnt a list of who has commented and who hast?
we like to not follow the main trends, we are free thinkers ;-)
why do i get the impression heidfeld has always looked over 25? {Comment #105}
Must be making up for the Prost/Sauber years when he was 23 and looked about 17...
Teletext is more reliable in a storm than F1's live timing
no, probably are the free videos over which you can discuss once the race is over...
I reckon it's for the quality and frequency of the adverts ;)
that, and the quality of the chat during cautions...
But a book about Horses on your Kindle? {Comment #207}
Maybe - but the horse-lovers I know are mostly technophobes (Mum's considered a technical whizz because she has computerised accounts and can browse the internet on her own) and would never buy it in that format. They would insist on a book they could read while in the stable waiting for their horse to finish its tea without worrying about whether they'll run out of battery or something.
well, i was thinking that, but then, what’s inconvenient about 1 Kindle that automatically updates itself every day, or even more often than that? less paper wasted, and more room for customized news. not to mention that you’ll only need to get 1 Kindle. {Comment #216}
The annoying thing is that as far as I'm concerned, an acceptable version of the Kindle already exists and publishers simply aren't using it. It's called Acrobat Reader Mobile and I have a version of it on my PDA for reading FIA regulations and free e-books (for some reason paid e-books don't tend to appear in that format).
They always had more than one on star trek!
Especially in sick bay :)
pda's are too small and consume too much battery. you need a dedicated device with an optimised screen and good feel in order to be comfortable.
the file format of the text is largely irrelevant.
but theirs are high resolution, full color, multimedia and totally interactive...
I was thinking of Sisko's desk :P
Somone needs to make one of those.
Lets see how the app store competes with LCARS :P
DS9 is not proper Star Trek
There is a guy in England who's house is done up like the inside of a star ship
Never heard of tweetreel before http://tweetreel.com/?t6kns
It is the best!
It's called Star Trek not planet parking
ahh, twitpic for videos. me likey.
Season 4 onwards when Worf joined was awesome
The had runabouts and a badass warship, what more do you need! :D
but they crossed the wormhole once! ;-)
Yep. As soon as they enter the rules apply unless of course they can borrow a 2008 car then they can do whatever they like going by Ferrari {Comment #260}
That wouldn't work for USF1. What Ferrari did was get a third party involved.
Perhaps USF1 could get the Speed Channel to organise and pay for a test of their cars in return for exclusive coverage of said test?
I thought you might
A televised test session? I like it!
Unbelievable. F1.com doesn't even have a search function.
Arent they going to have their own jet and a european base at a spanish circuit to test at?
Eventually they gave them a star ship when they figured out that the whole point of Star Trek is to go out and explore not sit in one place and pretend to be a UN peacekeeping force.
They already have their Euro base, don't they?
I need some star trek on DVD... TV stopped showing it here maybe 10 years ago, and by then they where only repeating The Next Generation :-(
Once. Most of the time they never left the station
they do? where?
They had politics, they had enterprising ferengi, they had bat'leth fights, and they had a massive war!
I meant their Spanish base, they already have it up and running, don't they?
Skip Voyager
Initially there was talk of using Epsilon Euskadi as the european base but that has to be unlikely nw.
not that I don't like it, but after two or three times you've seen the same episode you need to see something new.
(BTW, thanks to the 'one week is all you get in this small cinema at the end of the world' policy, I missed the last movie...)
that's what i meant. if they have one, where is it?
Very worth a DVD rental or purchase
It'll be in Spain. Ideal really, considering the testing venues there, and Portimao just across the border in Portugal.
I'm waiting for it to appear
Every series ever had Ferengi. Most of them had the same Ferengi. Every series except the original had bat'leth fights and wars
I havent head anything, last thing i hears was they were going to have a private jet and would be able to have their cars in the factory in the US before the englsih teams had got home from monza
have i missed something then?
Voyager is great. Voyager and Nect Generation are the best two series by a long, long way
I thought they were only introduced in TNG. And Voyager had to jump through hoops to get them in that one...
Ollie to the rescue!
http://blogf1.co.uk/2009/07/22/team-usf1-are-making-steady-progress/
The war lasted 2 and a half seasons, DS9 had a lot of things the other series had, they just stitiched it together so much better into an ongoing storyline.
I think thats what made it the best series for me
ahh cool. complete news to me. cheers.
That says they are close to signing a deal... i.e. they haven't started work yet.
Actually maybe they don't need much work? Depends what's there already. If there's a little warehouse that's all they need.
Its probably mainly for storage and minor servicing, i expect they will do most of the work in the US unless its back to back races
Not a big fan of Voyager, probably Janeway's fault
Nearly done with first season of Enterprise and it's already better than Voyager, in my eyes
I never did get into Enterprise. Star Trek is meant to be futuristic so going back in time doesn't make any sense.
I reckon for the fly-away races they'll be based in Charlotte and then for the Euro races be based at their Spanish/French/wherever base.
Interesting that their base wil be at the Aragon circuit. Pedalo was involved with the design of that.
It is in our future though, just a little before Kirk's time ;)
seems reasonable. am disappointed by the lack of webcam action on their front thus far.
Will two bases work, difficult to mange during in-season development
ooh, controversial...
Interesting
Shame Its another tilke track
http://www.motorlandaragon.com/indexVelocidad.aspx
But the point is each series is supposed to be more advanced than the last
basing a team in the us, is nothing short of crazy.
bmw's factory in hinwill is essentially worthless. if usf1 get into trouble, they're screwed.
Have just discovered The XX and so far I am a fan
http://www.last.fm/music/The+xx
Maybe, but DS9 was like a backward step in the beginning. With all the failing Cardassian technology
It shouldnt be too hard, its a major motorsports area. i think it used to be a NASCAR teams base
What happens when we go bust? probably didn't come up at the investor's day meetings
howdy all
looks awesome to drive though.

in other American news...
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77615
"Juan Pablo Montoya tested the new rain tyre for Goodyear in a Nationwide car at Goodyear's proving grounds in San Antonio, Texas back in November last year. It incorporates the use of carbonfibre to help stiffen the tyre's sidewalls for improved handling. However, the running conducted back then was mainly straight-line and not at racing speeds."
HOW HARD CAN IT BE TO MAKE A RAIN TYRE
!!!!!!
rant over :D
but if another f1 team wanted to take on an existing operation. that's the last place they'd consider, right?
And DS9 was hopeless which proves my point
if the people will insist on diamond cutting the surface...
Damn
I still liked it
Even Michelin managed to make a tyre that works on i... oh wait...
NASCAR saying they have 3 drivers in the field with F1 experience. That would be Montoya, Speed, and… that’s it, right? Are they actually counting Jeff Gordon and that 1 test he had with Williams? {Comment #263}
The other one is Max Papis, who did seven races in a Footwork back in 1995. He finished twice with a best result of 7th.
Probably, unless it was Penske or the like.
But i am sure they could sell it on to somone in the US. all the right people are in that area. the problem with hinwall and cologne is that they are so isolated in motorsport terms, there is nothing else they can do there.
At least in carolina they could probably use most of the team to work on ALMS or stock cars?
They won't be able to sell the team as a going concern but they should at least be able to offload their plant which BMW won't unless the team is bought.
fair enough. i know they'll prove me wrong, but it does seems daft.
Hmm. I don’t see a problem with asking what someone has on their Kindle. {Comment #284}
I would - unless it was a friend, I'd be worried that my Kindle was going to be either stolen or have an... ...inappropriate... book added to it.
it's tied to your credit card isn't it? assuming you don't give that away too, you'll be fine.
Its more of a uniques selling point, the costs of operating in the US are lower, but the transport is so much higher.
But when it comes to shopping for american sponsors they are at the front of the queue... I wonder if intel will jump to them from bmw?
haha, brilliant idea!
if they had their doubts, why develop it in the first place? {Comment #299}
Because the Kindle was originally developed to suit American reading habits. As a result, it's a roaring success over there. European ones are different, hence a different approach is needed if the Kindle is to have similar success.
eeeeeeeeeeekkk!!! the spider is BACK!
If only you had a lemur or a meerkat to defend you
i thought it was a moth?
how was le londres?
i'm now standing on the office chair to get away from it... the parents are asleep!! eeek!!! you're right i need a lemur!
that was alex... i had a horrible spider come down the stairs into the study to get me the other night and now it's BACK!
Giggles had a moth. Lou had a monster spider which has its photo on dropio
Am in a very 'Change The Who songs lyrics to suit current situation' kinda mood. Though again, this would require singing.
Just scream loudly. That will wake them
london was really good thanks :D we did see a man talking about HUGE spiders with one in his hand, but i ran away. was editing pics when i saw the spider...
Interesting, in what way Alia?
The 2nd version was released very recently though, not sure how well that has done {Comment #319}
As far as I know, that's done pretty well - but the Kindle already had a loyal audience that was happy to convert friends. The snowball effect was already in place.
This isn't the case for Europe.
Max?
Or is this one Bernie, looking for Max?
Throw stuff at it?
but we're already converted?
i don't know... all i know is it's really close and commenting and standing on a office chair may not end well..
Does anyone else look at this picture
and think "comparethemeerkat.com....simples"
?? just me then

don't try to scare it with a flash. it doesn't work. I once was taking macro pictures of one which I though was dead, just to find that it wasn't dead after all and I was sitting my camera (and fingers) at one or two centimeters of it...
any spiders? phew, i shall then.
No, we did that one earlier, before the pic arrived in fact
aaah rubbish
I want an otter.
It's good enough to mention again though :)
:)
i have the cutest video of an otter i shall drop.io soon.
the body seems too big to be dangerous, although I don't like the long and thin legs
I so want one now. They are soooo cute.
I was gonna drop.io the video I took of that legendary moment with them but it's like 200mb!!
Sidepodcast - It'll make you want an endangered animal
I didn't know Red Panda's came with free maps??
Did comment break doohickey?
it's not dangerous... i don't think. just flipping scary.. worse thing is i'm not sure if that was the one from the other night, or if that's a second one, and the spider found in dad's wardrobe was the one from the other night...
Sounds like they might be invading.
Form a FOTA and chase them away!
I think it's the law
yeah, that shouldn't happen. have fixed it,.
Two?! If I saw two of them I'd be out of town too quickly.
I assume Jon is trying to suggest that is not a real red panda, simply ridiculous. :P
That was weird
I clicked reply and it went to the red panda pic
ooops, that be my fault, appologee's
Those long necked turtles in Lukeh's photos look so weird.
oh no, real red panda's come with maps....its for all the people looking for proper pandas...the map tells you where they are....
i've seen way too many in this house :( i hate spiders so much :(
I love my books, i nomaly have several on the go at once… {Comment #514}
Me too! Usually one (plus an old F1 magazine) in my room, one downstairs while eating meals and watching TV and a third book to travel with me. I frequently get through five books and two magazines a week.
You can probably surmise from this that having a Kindle would not increase my reading amount very much (I'd also struggle to read an electronic device with no backlight due to contrast issues and would struggle with two devices, but the superfluity argument is probably the best one for me)...
i appear to be talking like a robot.
FAIL
I hate them. Hate em. Annoyingly, we live next to one overgrown bit of grass. Which doesn't help.
Otters are so utterly adorable! but very very very loud...
it says it could not convert the video though... would you like me to upload it in another format mr c?
give me a sec, drop.io has many issues right now :)
I think drop.io is being a bit crap with some videos lately
just think that they free you of other bad insects :-) (no? that doesn't work?)
Did you check to see how wet an otter's pocket is?
There's a drop.io iPhone app, I've just discovered
time to play some basketball. see you tomorrow!
yup. doesn't work on sidepodcast drop because it's too large :(
Bye Guille.
Maybe they were busy seeing how dry a camel's flip flop gets
have fun. See ya.
Won't be buying that then
See ya Guille
hehe. i did.
i might work on the new iphone as they have more memory, right? but it's a limitation of the drop.io api, rather than the app.
You might or It might?
it might. sorry.
Got excited for a second there
okay :)
hahah. playground / homepage takes priority. i has my orders :)
i'm not sure that was a typo...i think that was just a glitch in the really clever "Mr C" program that Christine wrote. :D
:)
Gotcha ;)
It makes no sense! Facebook is allergic to RSS! {Comment #570}
I think it's also allergic to my computer!
btw jon, could we beg for a follow up guest post about your weekend, when you've caught up with yourself, please?
damn I forgot! Not sure if lukeh did though, he was watching the otters before me cause I was busy taking lots of photos of the lemurs
Facebook is allergic to working.
oooooooh.
see ya :)
of course, i just had to work out what to write about, i have enough material for a years worth of blog posts....so you guys know whats going to be written about on my blog for the next few months....;)
I was too busy picking up my jaw in delight I'm afraid :P
love it!
What is the story? I went looking for it earlier then forgot. {Comment #587}
A 7-time world champion has allegedly paid for a ticket to be a space tourist on one of the first Virgin Galactic flights. Same as Lewis Hamilton had supposedly paid for a ticket to be a space tourist on one of the first Virgin Galactic flights last year. The Lewis one was denied within 48 hours and I wouldn't be surprised if the Michael one went the same way.
hehe you can hear that delight in the video :D hehe
Thanks Alianora.
it was amazing, i can't rave enough about the 2CV club, its like a massive family, every team in the pitlane has a story to tell, i feel incredibly priveliged to be able to be part of that, and be part of the team telling others about it

pda’s are too small and consume too much battery. you need a dedicated device with an optimised screen and good feel in order to be comfortable.
the file format of the text is largely irrelevant. {Comment #716}
Without the backlight, the Kindle screen would likely have too little contrast for me to be able to read it in anything other than bright light anyway. Unless the optimisation makes it a lot better than the black-and-white LCD screens those portable computer games of my childhood had...
My PDA can easily accommodate two paragraphs of text at a readable size, which from the review I've read is the same as Version 2 of the Kindle.
I will agree on the battery power. My PDA consumes about twice as much electricity when using Acrobat Reader than when it's sitting there waiting for potential calls. I'd be surprised if the Kindle used more electricity than the "waiting for potential calls" mode on the PDA. So that would save quite a lot of charging (even if, for me, the main thing that consumes power is playing sound through the PDA...)
The file format is relevant because a proprietry format (like the Kindle) can only be used by a proprietary reader. This would mean I'd have to have a second device unless a Windows version was released. Having the e-book on my PDA makes multi-tasking and certain jobs (e.g. blog production) considerably easier than using two devices (in fact, I find two devices more difficult than one device plus book because my attention switches easier between two blatantly different settings). Also, given what I'm like with devices of any sort, it's a lot safer if I have just the one device to cater to all my mobile electronic needs.
Different file formats also have different protections that are possible on them, which is probably why the Kindle will always be a proprietary format.
Unbelievable. F1.com doesn’t even have a search function. {Comment #732}
Oh dear. Search is a Web 1.0 thing, never mind Web 2.0...
Arent they going to have their own jet and a european base at a spanish circuit to test at? {Comment #733}
If Epsilon Euskadi get into F1, they might not have the base or circuit. Still, they do have the jet - and they could take the TV crew with them if they wanted their portion of testing costs defrayed...
I'm off too. Night all :)
night sir.
it’s tied to your credit card isn’t it? assuming you don’t give that away too, you’ll be fine. {Comment #785}
For some reason I thought it was possible to transfer a book you'd already bought on one Kindle to another Kindle. I could be very wrong about that.
Night R.G
i meant Scott... sorry, i fail at doing more than one thing at once :(
I’m off too. Night all :) {Comment #894}
Goodnight, Scott :)
don't think so. you can share amazon accounts, like in itunes, but you're trusted the other person with your credit card details anyhow.
Because the Kindle was originally developed to suit American reading habits. As a result, it’s a roaring success over there. European ones are different, hence a different approach is needed if the Kindle is to have similar success.
Interesting, in what way Alia? {Comment #798}
Americans abandoned print for electronic in a big way well before the Kindle arrived, largely because they insist on quick, cheap, and volumninous. It is much easier to do these things with an internet-equipped device than with books, so the market was already primed for the Kindle. Americans were also used to reading small devices when out and about (text messaging and mobile internet were both popular before the Kindle). All the Kindle did was combine online reading with mobile.
In Europe, most people still aren't used to reading electronic stuff in significant volume or quantity (unless you count e-mail and work-related stuff). Reading online for fun only seems to be associated with stuff like blogging, where the option to respond is needed (and therefore is outside the Kindle's functionality). Also, although most people have phones, many of them haven't even been converted to text messaging yet and mobile internetters are still in the minority. Reading books/newspapers or listening to music when away from home is still much more common than either. There will have to be a certain amount of education on the benefits of reading electronic stuff in quantity and on reading small devices when out and about before the link between mobile and online can be successfully made on a large scale.
but we’re already converted? {Comment #802}
You're the only people in Europe I've seen who are. Everyone else I've talked to about it is dubious at best, and I haven't even told them about the suggested price tag yet...
where are you getting this info from alia? i don't get why you've concluded there is this massive divide?
christine and i fit squarely into the first paragraph and we live in europe.
nonsense! europe is way ahead of america in terms of sms usage.
mile ahead.
America didnt realy get into txting untill about 2004, its been big in the UK since the mid 90's
where is this focus group from which you're drawing such sweeping statements?
i would like a kindle, and so far as i can tell, it's technology that's limiting european adoption (segmented carriers being the primary obstacle), not market penetration.
totally.
i can believe more people in the states browse the web on their mobiles because sms never took hold, but nothing that alia just said seems to relate to any figures i've seen.
don’t think so. you can share amazon accounts, like in itunes, but you’re trusted the other person with your credit card details anyhow. {Comment #900}
Phew! That's a relief :)
But you and Christine are way more techy that the vast majority of people. I am amazed anyone would even consider paying £400 for a book reader
i understand we're techy, and i'm not trying to convert anyone to getting one of these things.
it's just everything alia has said about the european market expectations doesn't hold any water with the things i've been hearing. it's completely the opposite in fact.
That figure was a comple guess, but i expect the end figure would be closer to that than a more realistic price of £100 which i would still consider too high personaly
sony e-reader in the uk is £199(ish). the kindle is much, much better.
i expect to pay over the odds as an early adopter, and i expect the price to fall.
i would guess it'll more likely be £300. my point was, even at £400 i would give it consideration. the kindle does have some competition, so the price will be reasonable i think.
i should add, that if your entire life is available digitally, with the exception of books, the incentive to remove that one last bit of clutter is considerable.
£400 to have no need for any shelving whatsoever, i quite appealing.
I have another problem with it for my present situation...
When i read a paperback on the train on the way to meet people in london, i can shove the book in a back pocket.... i cant do that with a kindle...
I see your point about shelves and storage, but i guess i like looking at books on a shelf. i put my dvds away in a cabnet, but when i can i like to keep my books out on a shelf so i can look at them.
true, but everywhere we go we carry at least one rucksack. either for an eeepc, or a mac or both. when i went to the science meetup, i took a backpack and when we went to the kers talk i had a backpack.
a kindle would fit very nicely beside the eeepc.
There was a KERS talk?
there was. and then we went to the pub :)
many of my friends would love a kindle (and most aren't particularly techie). However some of them, like myself love reading books, rather than digital documents. plus i have no need for a kindle or anything like it, i can see the appeal though.
I have missed out on so much sidepodpubbing :P
It needs to happen again!
hehe.
bassano is your friend :)
I doubt there is going to be another KERS talk
I can see the appeal, but there i couldnt justify spending anywhere near as much money on it as it will cost as i can do it for free
ha. no, sadly not.
He did mention something about going during the summer break, will have to remind him tomorrow i remember
An extra large fuel tank talk?
yeah cost is another issue. personally i'd rather spend the money on photographic equipment :)
I am already about to bankrupt myself on a gadget this week :D
*it wasn't me*
oh yeah the G1! my friend had a G1, and then lost it :( i could have killed her, it was such a lovely phone.
or lemurs or otters or meerkats
i'd have to pay for the lemur?
Since you failed to steal one you have to pay. They are only little so they can't cost much
This is more of a G3.
Interesting mix of excitement and fear at the moment!
i may have failed to steal one, but i got some photos of them :) i suppose they'll cost less than a panda ;)
[titles coming for photos in the near future]
heeeeeh!
O RLY?
:P
Ive wanted a smart phone for a while, this is the first time there has been a realistic way of me getting one
you should get a Lemur... it can help with live stuff if you need a drink or something :) plus i can look after it! :)
but these are way more fun
:o don't get me started on tigers! they are amazing! i'll come and look after that for you (as long as it's a little cub)
i don't eve own a smart phone, it couldn't posibly have been me :)
right, so that's settled, Mr and Mrs C are getting a tiger and i'll come and look after it when they need to go out into the real world or something. :) plus i should think the tiger will scare away any spiders :)
That's a fourth sidepodzoo. I love tigers though
bugger.
But you will pay £400 for a kindle? There be madness afoot!
How come you havent been lured into the big bad world of the iphone yet?
wouldn't it be easier to have a massive zoo with loads of animals in it?
hehe! :D
i don't get on with phones. they hate me.
plus i said "i would consider it" :)
the ipod touch does everything i need, and i have an eeepc with a 3g modem.
Great pics as usual Lou
I am the same, i am getting a new one becuase the old one keeps crashing, which i got becuase...
I hope HTC goggle can write better software than 3!
Christine wanted one with animals begining with P so you have to end up with a whole chain. You could sell franchises although I am not sure the X franchise wil go for much.
The alternative is to have one zoo and have all the animals with the same letter in the same cage but health and safety are not keen on that.
just out of interest why don't you get on with mobiles?
big thumbs
pandas, penguins, polar bears, and panthers (plus other animals) in the same cage may not end well...
oh i see.
thanks Steven.
So we need separate zoos. 26 zoos = 26 admission charges. The plan is genius.
land, might be an issue?
Thumb attatchements?
I a, sure Christine must have that covered before she suggested it.
am holding out for mind control.
where are you getting this info from alia? i don’t get why you’ve concluded there is this massive divide?
christine and i fit squarely into the first paragraph and we live in europe. {Comment #903}
Firstly, sorry about the relatively unstructured comment. Arranging evidence at 1:24am is not a straightforward matter...
Mostly I'm getting it from the lectures at university on information management.
8% of people in the UK, for example, see no point in getting broadband. That's not counting the ones who aren't on a fast internet connection for other reasons. If you're not using broadband, it's difficult to see where you're going to get enough exposure to reading lots of stuff online in order to feel comfortable using a Kindle. Especially bearing in mind that until recently the mobile networks charged a fortune for internet access, unless you was rich enough to be able to afford large amounts of data transfer.
Also, the fact that virtually everyone I know off-line still only uses their phone for phoning people, not texting or internetting or anything like that, is something of a clue (contrast with America, where the mobile portions of the internet have tended to be developed first, and why would they develop them unless they were being used?).
The USA, according to Wikipedia, sent approximately 260 billion texts a month in 2006 (the year before the Kindle arrived over there). In the same year, the UK was sending 205 million texts per month. While the UK has got a smaller population, it's not 1000 times smaller.
Looking at the trains I end up on, hardly anyone seems to be using devices with screens except for phoning or with earphones. Nearly everyone who is has a full-size laptop! In that sense, nothing has changed since mid-2004 when I first started using trains. This suggests that reading online while out and about hasn't taken off on the eastern side of the Atlantic yet, though I'm still waiting for research to confirm it either way.
15.6% of the US population uses the mobile internet compared to 12.9% in the UK.
My guess is that it feels different from where you are because you're iPhone users. 82% of iPhone users use the mobile internet, which is many many more than any other handset. However, the iPhone still consists of a minority of the phones that are in use - either in the USA or the UK.
I've used both anecdontal observation and statistical research to come to my conclusions. I could and should have done a better job of explaining them beforehand, but hopefully you can see where I'm coming from now. I've never seen any numbers backing up "me"'s assertions, so if you hadn't seen anything to back up mine either, then it's no wonder there was mutual bafflement at each other's statements.
It would be easier to break into the developing world market than Europe if the units could be made cheaper - for a lot of African and Asian people, mobile internet is easier to access than the desktop equivalent...
i think she based he scheme on jurassic park.
we're gonna need a bigger island.
okay. but the two aren't related. the kindle comes with dedicated 3g access as part of the device. the cost is included in the price of books.
i guess that depends who you know.
i shall dig some out tomorrow. i don't have them here, but i believe that the kindle will do just fine in europe.
cheaper than what though? they haven't announced any prices yet?
So we need more Aussies to convert to sidepodcast and then gradually take over the place? Sounds like a job for Amy
:P
where is this focus group from which you’re drawing such sweeping statements? {Comment #905}
A range of people I know or have known in the past 12 months (I've been curious about the Kindle concept for a long time for professional reasons - if a device of that category was ever succesfully brought onto the European market and widely adopted, it could completely change the library sector in ways difficult to predict at present).
i would like a kindle, and so far as i can tell, it’s technology that’s limiting european adoption (segmented carriers being the primary obstacle), not market penetration. {Comment #905}
The technology is stopping a core of people from getting it, this is very true. I would argue that beyond that core, other factors will interfere with the market penetration even after the technology problem is resolved. Many people are very conservative when it comes to changing the way they access things like entertainment.
I have just gone through th list of every astronaut ever of all nationalities to answer Sean's sidepodradio question about whether or not there has ever been a Major Tom
Well...
libraries are interesting thing. might have to give that some more thought.
agreed, but i don't believe we're that different from those in the states.
You gotta listen to the show to get the answer. No spoilers.
I did find out that the only astronaut in history who is way more famous for the mission he didn't do than any of the missions he did had Thomas as a first name even though he was called Ken all the time. Ken is a middle name.
:D we have a three acre field we aren't using... Maybe we could put some lemurs in there? :)
Lemurs are zoo three though. You need the Ps then the Gs before you can have lemurs.
:D :P
Is there any bamboo is the field because that could swing it for you?
this is a massive cliffhanger! a whole month!?
dammit... There are lots of empty fields in Kent, we could put the zoos there... Never mind that there are already at least 3 zoos nearish to my house already lol
The question was asked about a week ago. All the questions for all the shows are on the wiki. So there are a lot of cliffhangers out there.
Wouldn't it be inconvenient for you to have the animals near your house though. I thought the deal was if sidepodcast got animals you would be looking after their house. It would be a shame if you were there while all the rest of us were playing with animals next to your house.
but I want the lemurs..... I suppose I could plant some bamboo... How much would be needed, cause we need to make sure there is room for the lemurs... :D
PK has said he is doing 3 interviews tomorrow... more fireworks?
Apparently if @forza_felipe gets 30,000 followers he will start tweeting, its curently about 19,000
the actual felipe?
would that mean I get to look after the tiger mr c is getting on my own :) I could bring a lemur to help...
the very same...
(from what i can make out)
The lemurs don't take up much space so they can have a corner of the field. Pandas are lazy so they don't need much space so 2 and a half acres of bamboo should be OK.
I wonder what he can say that he hasn't already said.
Are lemurs good at looking after tigers?
I'll get planting then lol
I am sure there are more nuggets to come out...
they are good at sitting on people's shoulders and keeping people company... I'll teach it to look after the tiger cub lol
Keepthe video running so we can watch them. Stand well back for a while too.
the tiger cub won't kill the lemur...
okay. but the two aren’t related. the kindle comes with dedicated 3g access as part of the device. the cost is included in the price of books. {Comment #962}
They are related because it means a lot of people haven't been used to going online for extended lengths of time. As a result, they're not used to reading heaps of stuff off screens and therefore they're likely to be put off using a device like the Kindle unless they:
a) start reading extended amounts of stuff online or
b) get fully convinced that reading off a Kindle is exactly like reading off a page (this will take a considerable amount of marketing, though if the Kindle experience is as reported, the task should be possible)
Having online access built-in is one thing. Persuading people they have a need for it at all or a use for it in this specific instance is another.
Once customers are using e-Book readers frequently, a lot of them won't look back (at least that's the fear of the more conservative libraries). The trick is getting them through the door. The "core" I alluded to when responding to your comment about technology will be through the door with little or no persuasion. The vast majority won't.
i shall dig some out tomorrow. {Comment #962}
That's fair enough.
cheaper than what though? {Comment #962}
I was using the Sony device, since the UK figure for that is known to be £199 and the Kindle will probably follow US pricing patterns by being somewhat more expensive (Amazon.com charge $299 for the US version 2, if that helps). To really take off in Africa and Asia, I suspect that the unit price will need to be more in the region of £50-£99 (less if they're after the populist market, though the middle classes could probably make a success of the Kindle without that being necessary). It's an achievable price (in the foreseeable future if not now) but not one currently being charged.
Schumi's signed up to be a space tourist too.
*i may have put his name forward*
I don't get why someone like him would do the Branson thing when he can comfortably afford what the Russians charge to fly Soyuz and get a week on the ISS.
There is a nice huge space rock coming pretty close to us 3 days before sidepodradio day and a week later there is one nearly as big coming reall close. May need to breathe in that day.
Do they still allow tourists on the ISS? I thought they were thinking of stopping that practice?
Not sure. They had some last year or at the begining of this year. The Russians effectively own a section so I suppose they can send whoever they like. Each space agency gets a number of slots based on contribution. ESA for example eventually is entitled to one person on every second crew.
