Hello everyone. It has been a good week for achievements among the commenters, congratulations to Guille for completing his Phd and becoming a Doctor in physics, and congrats to Lou on passing her driving test, freeeedom!
Have you heard of astro-archaeology? The 'space age' is only a half a century old and in any case you don't imagine satellites from 40 years ago are still in orbit, yet a team are planning to contact the first and only British satellite to have been launched by a British rocket, which was launched in 1971. They have some interesting challenges, including rebuilding the old hardware, finding the access codes and getting permission to use the radio frequencies!
Yesterday a collection of successful NASCAR drivers met with President Barack Obama. Jeff Burton said, "Everybody knows who Thomas Jefferson is, but people don't necessarily know his wife. You know what I mean?". Inspiring.
The other day we were talking about Gunnar Jeannette and how the ALMS driver likes using GoPro cameras to record himself racing and doing extreme sports such as jumping from helicopters. We found his YouTube channel and yesterday I found his Vimeo channel. From the latter here is video footage from a GoPro camera attached to the top of his helmet as he takes his LMP Challenge car around Road America just last month.
Road America Helmet Camera from Gunnar Jeannette on Vimeo.
- Gunnar Jeannette, #06 CORE Autosport ORECA FLM09, American Le Mans Series
Jeannette was racing at Baltimore last weekend in the ALMS, and IndyCar was there too. I've written a few words about the weekend as I saw it from a few thousand miles away having watched both races live online. I took the liberty of including Jeanette's video of his qualifying session, the GoPro attached to the car this time, so do take a look at that. (I hope he doesn't mind people liberally using his videos all over the place.)
This weekend's racing is as eclectic a mix as ever:
- F1 - Monza
- GP2 - Monza
- ILMC/LMS - Silverstone
- GT1 - Beijing Goldenport
- WRC - Australia
I'll be at the Silverstone 6 Hours to witness Audi and Peugeot racing hard, who else is going? I do love Monza though so will be watching the Italian GP as soon as I get home!
Have a great day.
bonjour Thursday
Well the embed didn't work, I try again
sorted
I would've put F1 news in there but I couldn't find anything particularly interesting.
Well I've either offended everyone or bored everyone because nobody has said anything since it was posted. :D
Either way I'm hitting the hay, probably see you from the office in the morning.
All womens matches cancelled tonight too. Grrrr.
I did!
within a minute of posting too!
I got the little 'new post published' pop up :D
Morning, everyone. That lovely shoe post woke me up. Hehehe.
Sally Jennings, isn't it? Pres. Jefferson had an interesting lovelife, that's for sure.
Morning all
morning
HI Wolf,
How are you today?
How well do you know your Formula 1 history?
The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?
still pretty shocked from the yesterdays Russian air disaster with the hockey team ... we lost a legend :-(
Aye - that was unbelievable. Pretty much the team is gone
:(
the team is completely gone, Czechs lost three world champions there and in Slovakia probably the greatest player of the last decade ... will never forget how he scored against Russia at the Olympics last year
http://hokej.sme.sk/c/6045344/slovenska-hokejova-legenda-pavol-demitra.html
being a fan of some of the players must be hard, I certainly couldn't imagine what it would be like if they were "your" team. To lose your whole team in one go, thats just unimaginable to me.
Regarding the US GP / NASCAR discussion from yesterday, a very good point was laid out to me last night.
The F1 race will most likely be on at the same time as NFL and / or College Football - it's not inconceivable that the US GP broadcast might not even be live in the US.
yep, but the do have more than one channel in the US :-)
Many of which are owned by larger company's. F1 is so small, it may be knocked off by other shows - several races this year have already been shown in the US tape-delayed
It will be NFL on Sunday, generally the games they show depend on the market, so whilst the race might not be shown in every market, it could be on in most places
This is Texas we're talking about, which is a major football market. Even college football dwarfs NASCAR there.
College and high school football are much bigger in texas than the NFL though
Exactly, which is why the November date could be quite bad.
(They play on saturday and friday respectivly)
They also have matches on Thursday and Sunday
well they may have more people watching it live in Austin than usual F1 TV audience :-)
Sunday is Usually NFL, Thursday i am not too sure about, they play NFL games on thanksgiving thursday
Does Fox cover the Sunday afternoon games?
Yep, they have NFC, CBS has AFC
I only know this because of some of the major hassles IndyCar has with scheduling races (some of the journo's cover both IndyCar and football) - a market that is even more venue wary.
Rats, I meant to talk about the Rugby World Cup in the Daily, I thought I was missing something.
I found it interesting that it has a deal with NBC / NBC Sports and the first USA game will be tape delayed to 1pm ET to get more ratings.
Need to find places in Rugby-free Denmark that show it...
theres been a lot of complaint in NZ because oddly the FTA channel showing the most matches is Maori TV which is digital only so a lot of people don't have it.
Mauri tv are showing it instead of rugby tv?
Reckon it'll be Justin for you..
The Rugby Channel is on Sky ;)
can you pick up the norwegian/swedish broadcasts at all?
As hosts surely they'd go all-out and put them on the big channels.
the semi finals, bronze final and final are on four FTA channels as well as Sky, the two quarter finals involving NZs pool are too, and NZs matches against France and Tonga are each on one of the two main FTA channels. NZ v Canada and NZ v Japan aren't. Basically the main matches that New Zealanders will actually want to watch are all readily available and if you're into rugby enough to watch the other matches you probably have Sky already anyway.
Ah that's fair enough.
Really you could say that's what the Beeb did with F1 too.. :)
pretty much :D
Morning world.
How are you?
Wow... they really are given this team some socks.
...and IndyCar's return to Fontana has just been confirmed.
:)
I read that as it being called the Backpain Endurance series!
Will they come to Dubai 24hours?
No plans yet I believe, but 2013 is a possibility. It's neat little series to be honest. Decent fun.
I like this team for racing anything it can get its hands on, anywhere. Daytona Prototypes, ALMS LMP2, now this. A slight shame they won't stick with that awesome-looking Audi though.
Is the Blancpain Endurance Series any good? I know very little about it.
Or will they stay in GT3?
http://www.draper.co.uk/aboutus/news/images/United_Autosports.jpg
Good fun. The races are generally 3 hours, but they do the Spa 24 Hours too.
If the race will be on (as I suspect) at around 12 or 1 PM local time, I don't think there will be too much concern with NFL conflicts, as NFL games are usually primetime.
There is that.
Austin will be positioned to hit primetime in Europe, so will probably be earlier in the day than it normally would be.
Not really, Sunday 1pm kickoffs are pretty normal, (east coast kickoffs would clash at 12)
their is usualy 1 or 2 evening games on the sunday and one on the monday
Look at this weekends fixtures across the top bar: http://www.nfl.com/
Are they local, Pacific, Central or Eastern times?
The schedule for the same weekend this year has 8 games kicking off at 1pm Eastern. That is about the same time Canada's race normally starts. There are 3 more matches starting around the time the first batch finish
http://www.nfl.com/schedules?seasonType=REG#Week
Oh. Err, right then.
Still, the US has plenty of sports to keep itself occupied. If it's not football, it's baseball. If it's not baseball, it's basketball. I'm not F1 should base its schedule around that of other sports.
Ah. Busy then.

Today the GRAIL mission to the moon launches. T-75 minutes to launch.
This mission is sending two satellites to orbit the moon to find out what is in the middle once you dig through all the cheese.
Live coverage is available and of course because it is NASA you can expect delays
http://spaceflightnow.com/delta/d356/status.html
Add that to the final race of the NASCAR season and it will be amazing if any US newspaper outside Austin has a single picture of the race on Monday
Last week's "Windtunnel with Dave Despain" featured highlights of the Belgian GP for a whole 30 seconds - and this is on the channel that actually shows F1...
And the NFL season hasn't started yet. Oh wait it starts tonight. Too late though
The spring would be a better date in the long term. Post NFL pre baseball. There is stuff like march madness on, but thats a lot less than what they have now
Plus, beyond the opening few races, NASCAR slows down a bit (as it were)
F1M ping: http://www.f1minute.com/news/stefano-domenicali-ferrari-condemned-win
Spacevidcast have far better quality video of the launch. I have never watched their live coverage but they have some great people on their podcasts
http://www.spacevidcast.com/
Yeah I can.
they're both listed in the official broadcasters list so you might be ok?
This is the kind of space mission I like because the launch window is one second. So either it goes or it doesn't but no hanging around. There is a second window 40 minutes after the first one but that is only a second too.
45 minutes to launch
1-second launch window! That.is.TIGHT.
turns out I haven't forgotten how to run. Hooray!
Especially if the engines don't all fire first time. This rocket seems to have almost a dozen solid boosters strapped to it and once those light they stay lit so I have no idea what happens if a few don't light on time
Left foot then right isn't it? Or is it the other way round?
It's like walking, only a bit faster. :D
I do believe I start with the left one, yes :D
I have only gone running twice since I did my 5k in July which is bad. My first attempt was 5 weeks later and I only managed to do 2km so I thought I'd forgotten how which is why I waited another 2 weeks to try again. I made it 6 tonight :D
Yeah I could do that then. If it's on TV5 France I can see it that way too ;)
I think my best option may be the Dubliner or the Aussie Pub in town though...
I ran for the first time in over a week last night. Was good fun but it hurt a bit!
has Christine seen the rumours that Nike might be about to start selling the best shoes ever?
http://www.nicekicks.com/2011/09/is-nike-taking-us-back-to-the-future/
you're allowed some time off after your epic 5k performance :D I think my legs are going to be a bit stiff tomorrow, my thighs already feel a little mad at me.
Saw that earlier. Could it be...?
True, but I don't want to lose my fitness ;)
good point :) I have exactly one month until this wedding I am in so I decided I'd better start again, running out of time to shift a few kgs :)
#sidepodspace
15 minutes till the start (and end) of the launch window
That's 8 runs...
T-8 minutes
All flight controllers report go for launch
Then they didn't. Upper level winds are red and staying their till launch time. So now we go to the second launch window which is about 50 minutes
So...
For FP tomorrow, I was wondering if it was possible to listen to R5L on an iPhone?
I think so do you have the TuneIn Radio App?
Nope. I'll try that :)
I have tried that, when the F1 is on it doesn't broadcast it :(
I think I'll go along to the Nike club on Monday. I probably need a few drinks to get over my fear but I don't think drunk running is wise :D
#sidepodspace
Weather is now reddish green due to trans-elevating field mills. So there
I might have a way around that...
Well I ran last week with a whisky hangover and it was tough, but I felt good afterwards ;)
Thanks for this. I have a couple of minutes right now so I can watch, hopefully.
Weather trying to kill me update: Floods closed 2 of the 3 roads I can use to get out of town after pouring rain overnight (remnants of Trop Storm Lee in the Gulf). Right after I went through deep water after an SUV went in front of me and I was fine but it made an impression on me that I should never. do. that. again. Just after that they closed the road. I would have had to call out of work for the day.
Did he just call scrub for today?
unless they just canceled it.
I jinxed it?
You are like a bad luck charm :)
Two more shots tomorrow both 4 minutes earlier than today's windows and both still only for one second. I don't think I will be around for those
It's a gift. :)
Apparently that's really dangerous because the road underneath can wash out without you knowing it. Be careful, it's not worth it!
They had already missed the first window because of weather. It went green again but about ten minutes ago they were reporting possible problems
You never know how deep water is on the road
exactly. And I now these things, but I was dumb/ambitious and I went in the wake of the woman directly in front of me. But if there's a :wake: I shouldn't have done it. It's hard to call out of school less then an hour before, I'd have to write the plans for the day and all that. Not a reason to float away in my car, though.
Yeah. I had already turned around because the other roads were closed.
Lesson learned. Next time I'll try to be disciplined and just go back home and write/email the plans.
like the scary water at Spa!
boo
Have a good day, folks. School's going great so far. :) We're on day 3 now.
Have fun
stupid shortcut!
At least you didn't drive up a mountain and leave your car there. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-north-west-wales-14791178
They've brought it down now.. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-north-west-wales-14833541
who knew we would get a taste of rallying as well as f1 that weekend? :)
Crazy GPS!
Wow - just saw a tweet from Adam Hay Nichols. Apparently the wifi for the media centre at Monza this weekend is €120 !!
Saw that earlier from andy hone too, apparently it's not even a very good wifi either. Can't believe that price though, utterly stupid for 5 days or so
I "used" when I was there in April - it's ropey at best
It's Vitaly Petrov's Birthday today! http://www.lotusrenaultgp.com/6642-Happy-Birthday-Vitaly.html
Jean Alesi wants to enter the Indy 500 with Lotus
http://www.racer.com/jean-alesi-closing-on-indy-500-drive/article/211472/
With no tuneup oval races before that? Hmmm. Not the best idea, to be honest.
He was on about announcing a big competitive drive in this month's F1 Racing, probably meant this. Would be great to see :)
Hahaaa.... what Lotus would that be Jean..?
He will have to do a rookie exam on the first week of May
We might actually have a clear answer to that by next year. :|
Sooner than that. Bernard is in the UK now trying to find out where Lotus have disappeared to.
Extortionate
What do you mean?
I don't even know if there will be any other than the couple at the end of this year. They get lots of practice though.
He's a bit late to it but yeah I'd love to see it :)
Honda and Chevy have both announced big teams as partners. Lotus isn't returning phone calls.
Lotus have not signed up any teams for 2012 and are not answering any calls / e-mails from teams and Bernard is here asking "WTH"?
Ohh! You mean Randy Bernard. I thought you meant Bernard Ecclestone. :D
Wrong Bernie
;)
Anyway, I had best disappear for a while- back later
Any links you can share, Pat? Can't seem to find any articles on this.
Err it was on a podcast, MWM from two weeks ago I think, skip to the bit with Marshall Pruett, he's the man to go to about this sort of thing (forget Robin Miller).
Hold on. I could've sworn I heard him say it but maybe I read his stuff in his voice :)
http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/article/indycar-high-anxiety-over-2012-engine-supply/
:D Yeah, saw it on Twitter now. Rumor is they did get some sort of response from Lotus, but the lack of a formal statement from anyone describing this response doesn't inspire confidence.
Enjoy a little something from the Sidepodcast back catalogue.

I found it a very good impression of Dr Zoidberg
Well NASCAR does have NASA in it

Apparently Mark Gallagher has left Cosworth, according to F1Enigma.
Evening folks
Evening :)
Are people waving the go pro in Mr C's face again?
??
^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^
In the daily. People keep posting cool videos from them. It's like taunting him.
Hello Steven?
THem's pointing up to the video
You've lost me completely. Anyhoo, today marks 50 years since the tragic death of Wolfgang von Trips and fourteen spectators at Monza
:(
Mr C wants a GoPro and the daily post has Gunnar Jeannette's from his helmet
Sad incident.
Oh right. I see.
To be honest, I just watched the video - the camera that does it doesn't register with me at all.
I only know because we had a discussion about it in Baltimore. He had a second one on a rear wing end plate but when he got back to the pits it was not there any more.
He also has a load of videos on his youtube account of things like him jumping out of a helicopter wearing a GoPro
Fair enough.
I'm still very cheery about having booked my Christmassy flights :D
Whatever makes you happy
evil daily writers! we're having a manic couple of days so i still have to go back and check all gavin's links before i read this one.

Apparently today is the 45th birthday of Star Trek: http://io9.com/5838448/relive-45-years-of-star-trek-in-one-handy-timeline
Have made a new site for book type things, just launched it today: http://www.christineblachford.com/
Includes a new book trailer for 365 F1 Stories too.
Executive Editor? Congrats on the promotion. And the fancy title.
Better than general dogsbody, I suppose.
!!!! Why would spending my whole wage packet the day before I'm even paid not bring anyone joy? :D
Next step, President. :)
Welcome fellow leader of the digital world,
Yours,
Leigh O'Gorman
Prime Minister of Leighland
Sounds much better but I guess some of the duties are similar
BTW
Have you seen the program on the iplayer about the Huygens mission to Titan? Fascinating stuff. It arrived at Titan a couple of years before I arrived here so it may be new to you
:D
Sigh... catching Tuesday's NASCAR race at Atlanta - got bored after lap 56 (of 325), skipped straight to lap 298. Probably didn't miss anything.
Sad to say, JPM is happily mid-table nowadays
Daily is all done for tomorrow, time to head off to bed. Night Sidepodland :)
cheers sir!
my kinda hotel, they have imacs in the rooms: http://propic.com/2pZ

Jeff Burton said, "Everybody knows who Thomas Jefferson is, but people don't necessarily know his wife. You know what I mean?". Inspiring.
heeehee!
From the latter here is video footage from a GoPro camera attached to the top of his helmet as he takes his LMP Challenge car around Road America just last month.
even with his head acting as a mass damper, that's still a bumpy course.
Just imagine how difficult it is to steer the line you want when your eyes are bouncing about like that
it was exhausting just watching.
It gave me a sore neck and blurred vision. Jumping out of helicopters must be relaxing after that
heh. i think the gopro needs a broadcast module. that footage should be live streamed during the race. either to tv, or the web.
It was only after the race started that I realised it couldn't transmit. Then it dawned on me that it was obviously not going to broadcast.
If you think that was bumpy watch the Baltimore one
Can't wait to see Sebring
Baltimore http://vimeo.com/28684848
Sebring http://vimeo.com/20905254 (and night http://vimeo.com/21664380)
They aren't helmet-cam though, they are attached to the car
oooh, likes the night one.
Great quality considering how bad and variable the light was
Halfway round the second lap I got completely disoriented, thought we were heading one way and he turned another. How they race in that I have no idea.
Once they have done a dozen laps they can practically do it blindfold.
