Today is apparently National Literacy Day, so... why not read a book, or something? Anyway, useless fact of the day out the way, here are some of the things we're talking about at the moment.

  • Liuzzi finally has the second chance he's been looking for, with his confirmation as Fisi's replacement at Force India. The universal opinion on Sidepodcast appears to be a resounding: yay! So, let's hope Liuzzi can live up to his potential.
  • The ongoing Donington saga continues, with Simon Gillett continuing to assert that plans are on schedule for the track to be ready. The quote: "Donington has moved forward an awful lot and we are really comfortable." I feel better, don't you?
  • James has written a great silly season starter, with the six drivers we know have contracts, and a lot of speculation about the rest. It took me by surprise to note there are 20 seats without a driver at the moment. 20!! We have some fun and games ahead of us.

That'll do it for now. As ever, you can use this thread for any topics you want to talk about, but if there is some F1 news that requires a breakout thread, let us know and we'll get one started. I'll see you in the comments.

I should point out that Wikipedia lists Alonso as being a Renault driver next year. I didn't include that because 1 its Wikipedia and 2 the reference used didn't mention it.

I think its reasonable to assume Not Seb and Buemi will probably be in Torro Rosso next year.

I have come up with that just now though ;)

@Twiger Everybody speaks in English, right? Its easier to everybody! I could write in German! But many people wont like!

loving this article from tony dodgins on crash gate:

    http://www.autosport.com/features/article.php/id/2367

the case made... schumi attempted to crash his car at rascasse and all he got was a trip to the back of the grid. it proposes that he was meant to crash much harder, but couldn't go through with it.

    a precedent set?

Interesting. I suppose they could argue qualifying and the race are different but it just another example of Max's blatant bias towards Ferrari creating problems

    true.

  • Maverick07/09/2009 at 23:38

it proposes that he was meant to crash much harder, but couldn't go through with it.

That's quite an assumption. Even if it is true, the fact still remains that he didn't.

Also, it is entirely likely that Mr S was working on his own and his boss did not have to be involved, whereas with Piquet there is necessarily a wider conspiracy throughout the team (if true)

  • Jon Waldock07/09/2009 at 23:39

I belive he was... It doesnt take a genius to work out what was going to happen and how to stop it.

PK on the other hand... that plan must have been worked out before they even got to singapore...

  • Jon Waldock07/09/2009 at 23:41

    Upgrade your OS? :p

    Shhhh!!

I have no idea whats gone wrong, i have a USB du-jit, and it takes sound from the microphone into the box thing, and then to my computer and conversly takes sounds from my computer and microphone and puts it in the headphones....

but its only putting sounds from my computer into my headphones, its not putting my mic sounds into my computer

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 23:42

That's quite an assumption. Even if it is true, the fact still remains that he didn't.

Clearly he didn't mean to crawl up to the wall, stop just off it and get back on the throttle again. He meant to crash and either blew it or bottled it.

Also, it is entirely likely that Mr S was working on his own and his boss did not have to be involved, whereas with Piquet there is necessarily a wider conspiracy throughout the team (if true)

Schumacher surrounded himself with people who madea career out of cheating.

  • me07/09/2009 at 23:42

Also, it is entirely likely that Mr S was working on his own and his boss did not have to be involved

really? you don't know that anymore than i don't know if he meant to crash harder.

  • Maverick07/09/2009 at 23:45

really? you don't know that anymore than i don't know if he meant to crash harder.

Sure, more Ferrari members could have been involved but not necessarily.

Sure, more Ferrari members could have been involved but not necessarily.

ok. was massa involved in rascasse-gate?

had he been asked to crash instead? was there a last minute change of plan after the muppet binned it in qually one instead of qually three?

maybe he wasn't a muppet, maybe he wanted out of the agreement?

we'll never know, but it's not impossible.

  • Andy Taylor07/09/2009 at 23:48

I've just realised that with Sir Terry Wogan leaving the Radio 2 Breakfast Show (more listeners than that Chris Moyles oaf) and Chris Evans replacing him, fans of the show will no longer be TOGs but COGs.

I wonder if Mr C will start listening?

  • me07/09/2009 at 23:49

nope, i can hear it in my headphones, the computer just cant hear it, its really odd

my softwares having compatibility issues in Vista, i cant imagine what would happen in W7

that is odd. are you sure you have the correct input selected?

mmmhmmm, everythings working except the computer cant hear me, i can hear it though, and i can hear me. im so very confused

  • me07/09/2009 at 23:50

I wonder if Mr C will start listening?

you think i'm getting up before 10am on a weekday?

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 23:51

we'll never know, but it's not impossible.

The point is correct though. For the Piquet thing to work there HAD to be a conspiracy and therefore lrgally it can be construed as not following the precedent of the Schumacher case where he could have acted on his own even if I don't believe that is what happened

  • guille230607/09/2009 at 23:51

my softwares having compatibility issues in Vista, i cant imagine what would happen in W7

oh, sure. there is no solution to that (although they said they have improved the compatibility mode, and you can have virtualization built-in. but it's a step up from Vista in any other aspect

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 23:52

I've just realised that with Sir Terry Wogan leaving the Radio 2 Breakfast Show (more listeners than that Chris Moyles oaf) and Chris Evans replacing him, fans of the show will no longer be TOGs but COGs.

Evans is getting a breakfast show again. It's going to upset the TOGs but it will get more listeners than Wogan

Its strange that they want to sell the game to the UK buy having games here, but wont put it on TV...

Really, the Bucs are playing there this year, but they're not looking too good. Who denied you the football? ESPN does MNF now

Really, the Bucs are playing there this year, but they're not looking too good. Who denied you the football? ESPN does MNF now

It works a bit diffeent over here... The NFL sells the games on to broadcasters. Usually Sky (pay tv -fox) have the sunday games.

then sunday and monday night football were shown on a free channel -(Five)

The london game and the superbowl are shown on the BBC.

ESPN just launched a channel here and they were expected to show monday games, but they arent... So it isnt on any channel :(

  • Joe in Fla08/09/2009 at 00:27

Good News for Felipe- I found this Ferrari statement

Today Felipe Massa had plastic surgery at his brain box, where the spring hit his helmet in the accident at the Hungaroring on 25 July. The operation, at the Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein hospital, took around four hours and 30 minutes and had a positive outcome. After a short stay in hospital Felipe can go home and then start with his physical preparations.

I do have to say, as a Scot, I'm not so moved by derogatory cricket chants though :P

I've taken to listening to the Grandstand theme song :D

    Something particular about today?

Nah, it's just grubby weather and it's my first early in about 6 weeks and you're right, I've not had loads of sleep. Booo for early mornings!

yes boo indeed. Left the house to go to work at quarter to six yesterday got home at quarter past nine. Went straight to bed and still knackered. Not as tired as yesterday though - phew!

So how are we going to get you to forget your tooth Alison?

My suggestion is that every time it rumbles you say, "Ow my tooth really really hurts really loudly". I'm not sure but I think it might help :)

  • Alison08/09/2009 at 05:29

I found some teething gel that belongs to my god daughter! I can't really get it to stay on the right place though.

Hmmm... Well, not wanting to sound like an old fart, but to my mind MotoGP at the moment is some way off being as exciting as some previous years. The 1998 SBK season was a classic.

We are supposed to be envious of you that you can do what you want!

Ah, I'm at the beck and call of others, though. Editing text for the WTCC yearbook at the moment and then up to sunny Teddington for the day. Work is piling up faster than I can clear it at the moment!

Well you have a point there ... the days of Foggy, Slight, Crafar, Corser etc were very good too. My problem is not that people don't like MotoGP - that's fine. The problem is that how can you like F1 and then say MotoGP is boring in comparison? To paraphrase Mr.C. the other day, F1 is like church and MotoGP is like a rave...

  • Stuart C08/09/2009 at 06:37

F1 is like church and MotoGP is like a rave…

Heh. Opening laps of a WTCC race can be a riot as well. M Haven deserves a medal for being able to commentate coherently under that assault.

Stuart, what do you think of WTCC versus BTCC? I know both are not a patch on the Super Tourers of the '90's, but for some reason the privateer nature of the BTCC makes it more enjoyable for me...

  • Stuart C08/09/2009 at 06:39

    only available in Hungary

Very rare in these days of high street ubiquity...

Don't you just hate buying an item of clothing and then seeing someone twenty-odd years your senior wearing the same thing? Or is it just me?

Oh yeah, and Haven is awesome! Have you heard his rants on Midweek Motorsport? The one after the safety car incident in Pau was a right gem :D

  • Stuart C08/09/2009 at 06:45

what do you think of WTCC versus BTCC?

In recent years BTCC has been a bit more low-rent, but as you say the privateer element gives it a certain frisson. It can be quite action-packed.

On the other hand, it's now banned in our house because of the race format. Mrs C (my Mrs C, not the other Mrs C) had a sense-of-humour failure one Sunday afternoon: "You mean there's THREE races???"

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)08/09/2009 at 06:47

That's the exact reason why I am so far behind - When I sit down to watch something I feel compelled to watch the whole "weekend" - and 3 races is quite a while!

  • Stuart C08/09/2009 at 06:52

    Have you heard his rants

I distinctly remember an on-air one a few years back. He was mid-way through a highlights reel when he realised that something was awry: "And of course, ladies and gentlemen, this is the Renault Clio cup from Spa-Francorchamps and not the Nurburgring, as previously advertised on the other page of my script..." There followed the sound of him theatrically screwing up said script.

    Ah Brilliant!

The funny thing is, had that been the other guy (I think his name is Charles something?) he may just have carried on!

  • Stuart C08/09/2009 at 06:57

had that been the other guy

Ah yes. Carlton something? He's been the focus of much ire. I stopped watching the ALMS years ago because he kept getting the drivers' names the wrong way round.

    Sorry, I think that England should get to watch REAL football. Just go to the game, I’ve seen them and they look like a huge party {Comment #73}

Sorry, but the way my home team's town gridlocks every time they play at home puts me off. It's worse than Silverstone was, and there's only about 4000 people turn up for a typical home match...

I don't think that's happened to me since sixth form, when the school had a uniform. That's probably because I have very little fashion sense and nobody would want to be seen in the sort of clothing I wear. At least if you see someone twenty-odd years your senior wearing the same thing, you can conclude that great minds think alike...

"As he did endless laps of the two-kilometre track, he would stop, get out and run to the crowd, taking cameras off people, taking photos and sometimes making his own on-boards with someone's video camera. I have no idea if the cameras ever got back to the correct people, but someone in the crowd got them!"

The thing is I don't think he'd read beyond line 1 until line 1 had been executed so you probably wouldn't need to redact anything.

I have no problem with likes and dislikes. My problem was that the things said about Rossi were the sort of thing we normally don't like being said here and were (a) irrational (b) untrue and (c) just to provoke an argument on a slow night.

That was what annoyed me. Fine, don't watch MotoGP - but don't just say it's boring and then attack one of the riders unfairly - it's too AUTOSPORT forums for my liking.

Eh? Is it a crap name like London Oxford Airport? Why not just say Kemble?

it used to be called kemble airport. at least that's the domain name.

i've no idea why they rebranded but rob works there so he may know more.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)08/09/2009 at 11:06

    I never said that - I just can't understand why you don't, that's all.

i didn't say you did? i said i'll only annoy you by talking about it.

steven said it, but he's wrong.

You implied that I did by putting that underneath a comment about annoying me. Steven's comment just looks like a joke to me.

You are perfectly entitled to your opinion, I just thought it was unfair on Rossi what you said.

    Eh? More confused now!

  • F1Wolf08/09/2009 at 11:07

It's always nice to be able to test on a long runway and they've got one here.

they better make sure they have the wings fitted in the correct way, they do not want Tonio to lift off :-)

best value seats by far is one of the 4 corner packages, because you get to see a different part of the circuit every day. I wish every track had a package like that!

Best place to stay I'd have no idea. I could recommend a backpackers, but I have no idea about hotels.

  • Amy08/09/2009 at 13:02

What's on on a Thursday at the Melbourne GP

Thursday is practice + qualifying for all the support races. It's also the day all the drivers make their appearance at the autograph stage so I spend most of the day camped out there. For a first timer it's a good day to go and walk around and suss out the track and the merchandise shops and stuff.

  • Nathan08/09/2009 at 13:33

    Franck Montagny, Adrian Sutil

They drove in A1? I don't remember seeing them there...

    Sutil 05 Montagny 07-08

  • Jon Waldock08/09/2009 at 13:33

    Oh WHAAAT???

Just go on drop and look, it's easier ;)

    Well done!!

I don't think drop.io likes the ! in the filename, it disappears in the link

  • Jon Waldock08/09/2009 at 13:33

heheh. have we introduced ya to the preview button?

im not sure it was Alisons fault, she did what is usually done

  • Journeyer08/09/2009 at 13:33

That's not the point - they have moved on to other series and got valuable international exposure they never would have had...

But I think they would've been able to move on to those other series regardless of A1GP if they had the talent and/or sponsorship to do so.

  • Journeyer08/09/2009 at 13:35

    Sutil 05 Montagny 07-08

Montagny I vaguely remember. Sutil I don't remember at all...

  • Journeyer08/09/2009 at 13:35

But the drivers from NZ would have not had that chance because it costs too much - Colin Giltrap helped them get exposure they otherwise wouldn't have had...

  • Journeyer08/09/2009 at 13:35

    fair point.

  • Alison08/09/2009 at 13:36

Woooo indeed! I got my cousin's husband to put scaffolding up but then he had to go and do actual work. I took the pole down. The reason it'd broken there was that it had been made in 2 parts that were screwed together. The pole had started to split at the join.

So I drilled a hole at the other end of the split bit and reversed that section! I feel very proud of my DIY skillz

  • me08/09/2009 at 13:37

none of the above. what happened was alison linked to the file and we all clicked the link before it had finished uploading. drop.io returned an error and now that error is cached for 15 minutes.

essentially, shoddy coding from mr. c.

  • Christine08/09/2009 at 13:37

Oh okay. I used the share image button. I've never used it before and thought I'd see how it worked.... I'm not sure that's something I'll try again :P

  • Alison08/09/2009 at 13:39

I went to look for one after work yesterday and I couldn't find one anywhere! I'd have to drive to Manchester for one I think.

  • me08/09/2009 at 13:44

:D aww, don't be too harsh on yourself. it'll be fine. ;)

99% of the time it's good. when dropio integration was first implemented, that was actually the best i could do.

since then though, there have been updates to google appengine which will let me look for errors and then not cache them. the error will always be an error if drop.io has not finished processing, that's out of our hands. but it's daft to cache an error.

  • Journeyer08/09/2009 at 13:44

I bet there will be some damage on those new monza curbs this weekend.

there's new kerbs? those old ones were high!

I just noticed Lukeh has two pics in dropio tha have his phone number in the comments. Can a memeber of the management delete his number?

Well done Alison. You probably qualify to be Basano's assistant now.

  • Jon Waldock08/09/2009 at 13:46

dont they make them higher each year. soon it'll become a street circuit

he does seem to be doing exactly the same as jason, only four months later.

    Yay!

Instead of a sliver fern, does he just shake his head and wave around his hair?

  • Alison08/09/2009 at 14:02

I never did understand why he didn't get that Torro Rosso seat! He was reserve driver for like 2 races then they realised they might actually want their reserve driver and they replaced him....

  • Amy08/09/2009 at 14:24

right, time to go to bed and cuddle up with my Euro guide book. I think I have found the perfect place to stay in Milan. Monza here I (and others I force into it) come!

I was trying to sleep and my head pinger told me to come back. Just as Alison forgets her PIN, I was lying in the dark and remembered my netbank logon! Hooray!

Not hooray! I was at the shop and it'd gotton to the stage where I was gonna have to put my shopping back then I remembered. It was awful! There was a huge queue

it happens to us all. Along with forgetting my logon today, at my old job we had a keypad to get into the locker room and after working there for 3 years, one day I just couldn't remember the 6 digit code and had to ask my boss to let me in.

  • Alison08/09/2009 at 14:58

  • Amy08/09/2009 at 15:00

On the 12 hour time zone shift... I worry about what happens when Alison goes to NZ!

I will be 2 hours away, so you only have to worry about the 4 days when we are in the same timezone. New Zealand might cease to exist.

Or maybe it already doesn't exist and it's just an elaborate hoax that you're not in on.

  • Amy08/09/2009 at 15:01

We're the same person didn't you know....

I am stressed because I don't have any post-it notes and I'm trying to mark pages in a book. I am literally counting down the hours until I can go and buy some. Does this sound like something you would do? If so, we are the same person.

  • Nick08/09/2009 at 15:02

    in on?

Which is it am I in or on NZ? arrrrggggghhhh?!?!?!

  • Alison08/09/2009 at 15:03

Erm I can't say I've ever had fits over the lack of post-its, no. That might well be because I have a large collection of them in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours and I would never let myself run out!!!

I'm very glad you've not folded the pages down. Then I'd have to kill you.

  • Amy08/09/2009 at 15:04

I'm very glad you've not folded the pages down. Then I'd have to kill you.

I'm also a bit stressed because I want to highlight things, seeing as its a guidebook, but I hate marking books :(

  • Alex Andronov08/09/2009 at 15:04

Which is it am I in or on NZ? arrrrggggghhhh?!?!?!

On a more serious note it is an old slightly formal English way of describing things to say in for Islands. If you asked the Queen or Prince Charles they would say "in".

  • Alex Andronov08/09/2009 at 15:05

I'm very glad you've not folded the pages down. Then I'd have to kill you.

This would mean death from me too.

  • Amy08/09/2009 at 15:06

I'd be killing myself before you got the chance. It makes me cry to see people do that :(

  • Nick08/09/2009 at 15:06

I'm also a bit stressed because I want to highlight things, seeing as its a guidebook, but I hate marking books :(

    Ah, Dont worry about it!

Firstly they go out of sate quite quickly so dont worry too much

Seccondly it makes things mush easier to find.

Thirdly you can make notes as you travel which will help anyone you lend the book to or yourself if you want to go back in the future

  • Amy08/09/2009 at 15:07

On a more serious note it is an old slightly formal English way of describing things to say in for Islands. If you asked the Queen or Prince Charles they would say "in".

I think we say in just like you would say "he's in London" or "she's in Canada" we view the North and South Islands as a place name rather than an actual describey thing.

  • Nick08/09/2009 at 15:07

I'd be killing myself before you got the chance. It makes me cry to see people do that :(

If i dont have a bookmark I do very tiny ones... they flatten out and you never know...

Much better than leaving it forced open so it damages the spine. That really annoys me..

the trick is to always carry a bookmark, for emergencies. Just like you should always have a pair of 3D glasses.

  • RG08/09/2009 at 15:15

Sigh, never going to let me go of that are you lot.

    No, no you haven't.

  • Nick08/09/2009 at 15:17

the trick is to always carry a bookmark, for emergencies. Just like you should always have a pair of 3D glasses.

hehehehehe 3d glasses? Apparently they do work if you wear them outside of the cinema... You can see real life in 3D!

I normally have a train ticket or some old loyalty card in my wallet i can use as a bookmark, but emergencies do happen!

  • Alison08/09/2009 at 15:17

the trick is to always carry a bookmark, for emergencies. Just like you should always have a pair of 3D glasses.

  • Nick08/09/2009 at 15:19

  • Nick08/09/2009 at 15:21

Best I could do was Rapid City Sout Dakota, which is pretty close to Hannah's state

That was probably more effort than it was worth... back to reality

  • RG08/09/2009 at 15:22

  • Alex Andronov08/09/2009 at 15:22

  • Nick08/09/2009 at 15:23

I saw that a couple of weeks ago. I kindly left my glasses at the cinema though. I now feel I've completely offset the carbon from my round-the-world flight

There was a machine in Sydney at the science museum which calculated your carbon footprint.

My 14 flights in the previous 12 months to using it broke the machine :D

  • RG08/09/2009 at 15:23

    About you and Miley?

Sorry Alex, it has to be done to you as wel.

  • Amy08/09/2009 at 15:23

I saw that a couple of weeks ago. I kindly left my glasses at the cinema though. I now feel I've completely offset the carbon from my round-the-world flight

I recently found out that a girl I went to school with has become a super-greeny made a decision to never willingly set foot on a plane again. I could understand this if you lived somewhere where you can drive to another country, but now she is pretty much trapped forever on an island containing 1 million people.

  • Nick (Zombie)08/09/2009 at 15:23

  • Alison08/09/2009 at 15:27

    Thank goodness...

Well you've heard my attitude towards carbon offset.... I think you shouldn't waste energy or whatever. I think you should be as efficient as possible, but I'm not gonna let it affect my life. I've only been 2 places by plane in my life to date and they were both islands....

  • me08/09/2009 at 15:28

this is what happens to people who try to row to/from NZ

  • Alex Andronov08/09/2009 at 15:29

I just had a sudden panicked moment....

With all this talk of folding corners of pages down...

Nick has a copy of my book! I hope he doesn't fold down the corners of the pages in my book!

Well you've heard my attitude towards carbon offset.... I think you shouldn't waste energy or whatever. I think you should be as efficient as possible, but I'm not gonna let it affect my life. I've only been 2 places by plane in my life to date and they were both islands....

my theory is the plane is going anyway, either with or without me on it.

That's like some of our routes that used to be constantly missing life jackets becuse the sign said "Your lifejacket is under your seat"

Some passengers were putting them in their bag thinking they could take it home for later use!

We changed the sign in the end

On the subject of links (and this isn't a plug honest) I've noticed that blogger have changed the way pingbacks work and it's kind of broken... On my most recent post on gamboling it now looks like yesterday's daily linked to it... Which it didn't somebody (aka me) linked to it in the comments. That's not how it's supposed to work is it?

We all know that raing drivers have to say for sure on a regular basis but this week I have noticed that everyone on any of the Leo shows when asked a question always starts the answer with "So..." It doesn't matter what the question is or how inappropriate the So is it is like they are compelled to use it. They say So like it is a sponsor. I can't believe I have never noticed this before.

I think the other comments from the other people will let you know I have not made this up :)

    Too much research!!!!

  • Nick08/09/2009 at 16:15

Huh? Raw meat comes in pots? Raw meat comes from animals....

Well yes... but then it goes to a butcher in a meat packers who puts in its packaging. its air tight! it cant drip!

  • Steven Roy08/09/2009 at 16:16

    so?

    :D

  • Alison08/09/2009 at 16:16

Well yes... but then it goes to a butcher in a meat packers who puts in its packaging. its air tight! it cant drip!

What if you don't use it all at once? (this is the eternal question isn't it.....)

  • Alex Andronov08/09/2009 at 16:16

Well yes... but then it goes to a butcher in a meat packers who puts in its packaging. its air tight! it cant drip!

Do you always finish all of the meat from the tub in one sitting?

this is like the bookmarks thing all over again ;)

  • Nick08/09/2009 at 16:17

So it doesn't drip onto the other

Who puts something that is likely to drip in the fridge without using tupperware?

I am amazed... Nothing drippy gets in my fridge!

  • Amy08/09/2009 at 16:17

Do you always finish all of the meat from the tub in one sitting?

does meat in the UK really come in tubs/pots? I feel very foreign all of a sudden

  • lou08/09/2009 at 16:17

    hey everyone

  • Alison08/09/2009 at 16:17

    Oh hahahahaha Alex!

  • Nick08/09/2009 at 16:17

Do you always finish all of the meat from the tub in one sitting?

I generaly cook it all... and then put what i dont use in the fridge or freezer.

I cant leave raw meat once its been opened.... think of all the germs!

  • RG08/09/2009 at 16:18

    hey everyone

    heya lou

  • Alison08/09/2009 at 16:18

does meat in the UK really come in tubs/pots? I feel very foreign all of a sudden

No. Although you are speaking to the vegetarian. I have never encountered pots.

  • Steven Roy08/09/2009 at 16:18

Are you really supposed to put cooked and raw meat on different shelves of the fridge?

Raw on the bottom as it has nasty stuff that hasn't been cooked out of it and you don't want it dripping on cooked meat that you are going to eat

  • Alison08/09/2009 at 16:18

I cant leave raw meat once its been opened.... think of all the germs!

That's completely the wrong way round. It's best to leave it raw.... Then it gets cooked again!! It's doing scabby things with cooked meat that's the problem!

  • Bassano Clapper08/09/2009 at 16:19

No. Although you are speaking to the vegetarian. I have never encountered pots.

3 pots of pork sausages just doesn't sound right

  • Bassano Clapper08/09/2009 at 16:19

    Hi Lou

  • Bassano Clapper08/09/2009 at 16:20

  • Bassano Clapper08/09/2009 at 16:21

I cant leave raw meat once its been opened.... think of all the germs!

It's covered in the stuff before you cook it. That's what kills 'em

  • Nick08/09/2009 at 16:22

That's completely the wrong way round. It's best to leave it raw.... Then it gets cooked again!! It's doing scabby things with cooked meat that's the problem!

    It also dries out...

Cook it and put it in Tupperware Its not like its going to be there any longer than 24 hours, 48 at the max.

Any longer then you just freeze it!

    just catching up on comments...

Today Felipe Massa had plastic surgery at his brain box, where the spring hit his helmet in the accident at the Hungaroring on 25 July. The operation, at the Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein hospital, took around four hours and 30 minutes and had a positive outcome. After a short stay in hospital Felipe can go home and then start with his physical preparations.

    ahh that's good news :)

it is official, it will be Felipe baby or baby Felipe :-)

I am very excited. The baby is due just after the middle of November – and we know it is a boy. We will call him Felipe.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2009/sep/08/felipe-massa-interview

    hehe this is awesome :D

    how freakin' cool is that??

ah i wish i'd been there... how amazing.

Questions: Why not Kemble and what were Brawn doing when they tested there?

Brawn used it earlier in the year.. i remember because i wted to go and have a look, but dad wasn't going that way till the day after :)

mind you, i think you may have beaten lou's total from last year already. think of the effect this might have on her.

i don't mind people beating my total from last year...

    From Amy much earlier:

I’ll have you know I never once featured in the top 5 when it was still around

Mind you, you were nowhere near as addicted then as now - you were a newbie (albeit a record-breaking one already) back then (twas the end of March). :D

  • lou08/09/2009 at 16:56

you have prefect work?!!? whats is that?

well.. as i'm pastural prefect i have stuff like sorting out the rotas for peer mentoring, writing up stuff for the peer mentor meeting i'm in charge of tomorrow, sorting out plans for when people are free so a group of us can come in and paint/redesign/save a room in our school so we can have it as prefect studies and stuff (bye bye weekends), then there is sorting out student council election forms, emailing various teachers and making sure i'm all prepared for house meeting on friday with stuff for house drama... being a prefect is hard work...

  • Nick08/09/2009 at 16:57

    I heart Nole. And Mac.

I dont think i am allowed to mention the brand on a family friendly site...

But how about i get beer instead?

  • Lukeh08/09/2009 at 17:06

    :( What happened?

Overworked + unreliable 'friends' + unhelpful management , all combined with 10 tablespoons of stress, = s'meh. Still unsure how having a single person run an entire supermarket's frozen department, both on the shop floor and in the stock room at the same time, is sensible but what's done is done...

anyways... the less I talk about it, the better to be honest.

  • Scott Woodwiss08/09/2009 at 17:55

Evenin. Just got home and realised I've left my iPhone in my mate's car! Thankfully he doesn't live far away, he's in Wymondham as well, so fingers crossed my other mate who was with us can get hold of him and get him to drop it round. There was swearing involved when I realised I didn't have it :P

had that been the other guy (I think his name is Charles something?) he may just have carried on!

Ah yes. Carlton something? He's been the focus of much ire. I stopped watching the ALMS years ago because he kept getting the drivers' names the wrong way round.

Carlton Kirby. He's just about tolerable on reasonably short live racing like DTM. He can't fill on longer stuff like ALMS though, and he is utterly hopeless on any kind of highlights package - I wanted to say lots of angry words about him last night when he was basically spoiling the end of the race 20 minutes before the end of a 1hr highlights show.

  • Lukeh08/09/2009 at 18:22

All the hassle is worth it when you have an awesome degree and get a ggod job, trust me!

Totally. Just one of them days, everyone once in a while the step will be larger than usual but you'll still climb it and move on ;)

Unbelievable as it seems the space shuttle Discovery will undock from the ISS in an hour. Half an hour later the shuttle will begn its fly around of the ISS. Normally this provides some of the best pictures of the whole mission.

NASA TV is already live on the build up to the undocking.

So much love for Scrubs, what a show. How can a show be so utterly brilliantly funny yet totally tragic the next minute?

  • Neil Denham08/09/2009 at 18:46

So much love for Scrubs, what a show. How can a show be so utterly brilliantly funny yet totally tragic the next minute?

Oh yeah totally. See, it even makes me speak american.

  • Lukeh08/09/2009 at 18:48

The thought of Scrubs has got me thinking now... has anyone here ever watched the american comedy TV show Arrested Development?

Probably funnier than Scrubs personally yet no-one watched it. :( So vastly underrated and underwatched yet got a stupid amount of awards and critical acclaim...

  • Pat W08/09/2009 at 18:49

mind you, i think you may have beaten lou's total from last year already. think of the effect this might have on her.

    #sidepodradio update

I see Gavin has signed up to do a show and with Jon's show we have a full schedule again unless Alex runs into trouble with his pre-records as he suggested yesterday.

Can everyone who is plannng to leave voicemails for any of the shows do so as soon as possible because Christine and Mr C have a lot of editing to do before sidepodradio Sunday and we don't want them too frazzled before the day starts.

  • Steven Roy08/09/2009 at 19:08

Will leave everything tomorrow. Did you get the Valencia Predos alright with me using my PSP?

  • Pat W08/09/2009 at 19:10

So I'm cooking bolognese. I say that, I'm cheating with a sauce, or I will be when the meat is ready.. Unfortunately the spaghetti I thought I had, it isn't there. So I either convert to the twists (fusilli?) or I do an emergency switch into a cajun thing with rice.

    OK,

Sauce from a bottle is fine - even the Italians cheat sometimes - and you are allowed to convert to pasta too ;)

Fusilli is the best kind of pasta ever invented!! Not sure it's ideal for bolognese though.

Sauce from a bottle = okay.

Using the wrong pasta for the type of sauce = crime worse than death in Italy

I went to an Indian's house for dinner and she made a curry from a starter kit (and added ingredients) - she said it was because the spices were so good and it was more convenient!

10 minutes till separation of the space shuttle Discover from the ISS. 40 minuts until the shuttle begins its fly around of the ISS which is well worth watching especially if you have never seen it before.

NASA TV just announced that there will be problems getting TV pictures during both the undocking and the fly around. Is it any wonder they have trouble getting their budget approved when they do all the best stuff without proper coverage.

  • Pat W08/09/2009 at 19:23

Mercury Prize announced today? Only BBC2 has 30 mins? BBC3 or 4 used to do lots more in the days when nobody could see those channels.

Gavin! Question about graphs and blogs.

How do you get them out of Excel and into the blog without them looking terrible?

    (1) Click on the graph and copy it

    (2) Open paint

    (3) Paste

    Dead easy!

  • Steven Roy08/09/2009 at 19:24

All plastic is porous to some degree.

I did that. Saved it as a PNG, insert into blogger. Appeared too small. Resized to make it readable, it got blurry. Same result as a JPEG.

  • Nick08/09/2009 at 19:25

Then why do they put cola in plastic bottles?

It would have to happen incredibly slowly, certainly less than 24-48 hours

  • Alison08/09/2009 at 19:27

All plastic is porous to some degree.

Also some of those tray packet things are polystyrene. It can certainly come through that. In addition, it might not be yours that's split. They're stored in huge volumes at the supermarket, if another packet opened and spilled juices onto the outside of yours, they could drip onto stuff in your fridge.

  • Steven Roy08/09/2009 at 19:27

Then why do they put cola in plastic bottles?

The real reason is that people are sometimes clumsy when they pick things up and knock the lids of and spill cow juice everywhere. If it ison the bottom shelf and cooked meat on th top it is impossible to spill on it.

  • Jon Waldock08/09/2009 at 19:27

Steven, the password you sent me dosent work. Can you try it on yours to see if it works?

    I am still not convinced...

It all sounds like an old wives tale!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)08/09/2009 at 19:29

I did that. Saved it as a PNG, insert into blogger. Appeared too small. Resized to make it readable, it got blurry. Same result as a JPEG.

    Actually I didn't copy/paste, I PrintScreened

Um, I just copy over from Excel into paint and save as a 1-1 Jpeg,,, then I open Windows Live Writer and insert the image? I don't understand where you are going wrong here?

  • Pat W08/09/2009 at 19:29

Following Jon's life lesson #264 (TURN ALL SOUND EFFECTS OFF BEFORE YOU RECORD!!)...jon has now decided to become a Monk

Will this stop Jon from referring to Jon's self in the 3rd person?

  • Jon Waldock08/09/2009 at 19:29

Will this stop Jon from referring to Jon's self in the 3rd person?

    Jon will not

  • Pat W08/09/2009 at 19:30

That's true... I do often find myself plugging things like my new blog/podcast here: http://goforodd.com

I must have missed that Alex has a podcast now?!

  • Jon Waldock08/09/2009 at 19:30

I must have missed that Alex has a podcast now?!

    Yup, tis really good

  • Alison08/09/2009 at 19:30

    I am still not convinced...

What if there's a split in your "tub" then it would drip. Accidents happen you know :P

  • Steven Roy08/09/2009 at 19:31

    Jon,

I have gone in and told it the pass word is the on I sent you. It should work now.

  • Steven Roy08/09/2009 at 19:32

Thanks Jon. I have no idea why it didn't work in the first place because I set that password for it on day one.

Smack into the fridge door, break the vacuum that's holding it shut (;)), knock the meat off the shelf and all the juices could go in your humous.

I guess cruise ships do stop by from time to time. But they're full of old people.

They were young when they left.

  • Steven Roy08/09/2009 at 19:37

I hate NASA. I hate NASA. I hate NASA.

Since last night I have been looking forward to thefly around of the ISS and they have been plugging it like Alex and now they decide there will probably be no TV coverage of it after I have told everyone to watch. Sidepodcast needs to take over from NASA TV before they blow the whole space program

  • Nick08/09/2009 at 19:38

What if there's a split in your "tub" then it would drip. Accidents happen you know :P

I think my original question was do they need to be on different shelves...

I assume from all that has been said that this is safe?

  • Steven Roy08/09/2009 at 19:38

I'm gonna take a quick listen to it, just to make sure i havent commited any felonies, make sure theres no swearing in hte tracks!

    They should privatise it all...

It would stop them trying to launch rockets from unsuitable places and i am sure tv coverage would be a top priority!

  • Alison08/09/2009 at 19:39

I assume from all that has been said that this is safe?

NOOOO what if the juices don't drip, they just pool on the shelf.... :P

You have to wonder with all the satellites whizzing round up there how is it possible to be out of range at an altitude off 200 miles? Have you ever seen one of those sky maps of all the satellites? There are hundreds of them

  • Jon Waldock08/09/2009 at 19:42

i've spent most of hte day recording my podcast which will be aorund the same length as the show i just did in half hour, its taken me that long because im really particular about my sound etc etc. i think i like doing it all in one

  • lou08/09/2009 at 19:44

you have to go to school to paint a room?! its that what hte janitors are for!?

it's cause i'm a prefect... and apparently. 'it would be nice for the people who want to use the room/ are arranging for it to be used got involved with the actual painting and redecorating too...' i may scream... however.. i also may do a blog series on the transformation of the room.. cause well.. it will give me something to write about. not sure it's overly interesting.

  • Alison08/09/2009 at 19:44

    niiceee. lol

It could stick to the bottle and grow mould

So the juice has to somehow penetrate the airtight packaging, fall onto the steralised bottles and grow in a darkend fridge... all before i drink it?

I think i will take my chances on this one :D

  • Pat W08/09/2009 at 19:52

Have you ever had beer chicken? you take hte ring pull off a can of beer/cider, drink half, put some holes in the sides, shove it up a chicken, then cook it!! mmmm

but the beer would run out?

  • Jon Waldock08/09/2009 at 19:52

but the beer would run out?

No, you balance the chicken on the beer can....so the steam cooks the inside of the chicken. mmmm

    BBC live stream, sorted

we have a tv in the common room... hmm......

  • Alison08/09/2009 at 19:57

    Sometimes... depends

So the meat juice full of nasty germs is on the outside of the bottle and you then put it in your mouth....

Or you pour the beer into a glass along with the germs. You need to cook them to kill them :(

  • Nick08/09/2009 at 20:01

So the meat juice full of nasty germs is on the outside of the bottle and you then put it in your mouth....

    This is insane!

A- the juice cant get out of an air tight pack!

B- the beer is vertical, id say there is a 75-80% chance any of these impossible drips will hit the tops.

C- when you drink out of a beer bottle you dont suck the top only the rim touchesd your lips, the rim is covered by the crown in the fridge!

D- There is more chance of the Fridge exploding!!!! :P

  • Nick08/09/2009 at 20:03

B- the beer is vertical, id say there is a 75-80% chance any of these impossible drips will hit the tops.

oo i got a reply from Keith re all that yesterday... question for you all.. do you thhnk i should take his advice and change my twitter pic to stop this kinda thing happening again, as there are no useage restrictions on the photo as it is?

Why should you have to change what you do with your image? He knows someone owns the photo regardless where he found it. Because twitter put no restrictions on it does not mean he can use your face.

  • me08/09/2009 at 20:37

    however there are

yes there are! you're in it. you didn't sign a model release form. every original work of art is implicitly covered by copyright unless otherwise stated explicitly.

  • me08/09/2009 at 20:40

sadly, knowing him it'll make no difference. for starters complaints add to his comment count and nothing makes him happier.

  • Jon Waldock08/09/2009 at 21:22

Why are they all saying "good luck"?

Maybe it was the old version of "for sure"

  • lou08/09/2009 at 21:22

Why are they all saying "good luck"?

no idea. but i have an urge to use all the good luck's and put them into one mp3.. and then play them before an exam, just to make me smile..

  • Alison08/09/2009 at 21:23

i still think he is awesome :)

Just less awesome than he was 3 years ago?

For sure goes back to the 1970s. Emerson Fittipaldi usually gets the blame for starting it

Okay, explain why Sutil doesn't say it the same both times.....

First time he says it in the Anglicised way, second time in his native pronunciation. Or something.

  • lou08/09/2009 at 21:33

Well if you are interested you can get copies from here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Book-Missing-First-Page/dp/1847991211/

The URL of that really does it no justice....instead of the book title "the book WITH THE missing first page", it just tells you that theres a book for sale, and its missing its first page, and its probably in tatters. ;)

  • Alex Andronov08/09/2009 at 21:39

    I think so!

That's good! I looked back through the posters and thought that with no comments from either Mr or Mrs C for a while I wondered if somebody might have cracked open a bottle of high sugar energy drink, everyone would be eating smarties and playing pass the parcel and when they came back the whole place would be a mess and we'd be sent to our rooms!

We knocked Timo down a peg or two and made fun of drivers' accents. That's about it :(

  • Alison08/09/2009 at 22:24
