I don't know about anyone else, but that weekend went way too quickly for my liking. One minute I was counting down the hours to hometime on Friday, the next it is time to wake up for Monday morning. Boo. Anyway, here are some things we're talking about at the moment.

  • Poor Badoer just can't let go of the fact that he didn't exactly live up to his dream performance in the Ferrari. Whilst he says that he's proud of what he achieved and can always say he raced two GPs for a top team - he reckons the media's bad vibes about him forced the team to replace him. Hmm.
  • Meanwhile, Alonso says he enjoyed giving a quick demo for Renault in his hometown of Oviedo in Spain. Mr C wanted to go to Spain to witness this marvellous homecoming but... he forgot. Oh well. Instead, he stayed in Sidepodcast Towers and fiddled around with some code. Good times.
  • Don't forget that if you're a show host for the upcoming Sidepodradio, firstly you have the opportunity to write a guest post to promote your half hour slot. Secondly, if you are doing a pre-record, the deadline is this Friday for your submissions. We need time to process everything ready for broadcasting, so get your recordings in asap!

That'll do it for now. Don't forget that the daily post is your place to talk about anything and everything on your mind, whether it is F1 related or not. If you spot an F1 topic you think deserves a breakout thread, let us know and we'll do our best. I'll see you in the comments.

Probably so pre Core2Duo machines can use SL too, in 32-bit mode without intervention. Must be other reasons though

Hehehe yeah. That's very true. Particularly in retail I've found..... You should see the memos I get sent.... It's like you thought of this and decided it was so profound you had to share it with us all. However, it's blatantly obvious. The major problem is that it occurred to you just a minute ago and you're supposedly supposed to know what you're talking about.

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 00:08

Alison, was it you asking about accountancy courses the other day?

It's not just retail. I have seen it in manufacturing and especially in sales. I know people who run international sales operations which do many many millions and their ability, knowledge and judgement is so poor you wouldn't believe it

  • Alison07/09/2009 at 00:09

I suppose because they are trained in one thing, or their focus is on one thing, i.e. sales or production, that when they get promoted they maybe don't see the bigger picture as they should..

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 00:11

    Oooh yeah it was! :)

Ah good. I've just finished a course, or rather I will finish one when I do the retake. I forgot the question.

I was just very confused about all the different qualifications!! Also do you need a degree to have a realistic chance of getting a training job?

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 00:12

Recruitment consultants filter people based on linear career progression. If you don't have that it is a nightmare dealing with them

Sometimes I feel generally clueless. But then, I don't work in retail.

  • Alison07/09/2009 at 00:14

Sometimes I wish I could stay in my job forever. I'm really good at it. You just get too much abuse from the public though. People look down their nose at you when it's really unwarranted.

You really don't want to deal with the public. There is no money in it

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 00:15

I was just very confused about all the different qualifications!! Also do you need a degree to have a realistic chance of getting a training job?

I took the AAT Accounting Technician course, which is 3yrs. If you start in yr1 as I did you don't need to know anything or have any experience or even work in accounts.

Many of the people on the course changed jobs throughout the 3 years, moving from any random thing into an accounts job because the employer was looking for an AAT trainee. i.e. jobs like ledger assistant, book-keeping all the way up to trainee accountant in a firm of accountants. You don't need a degree unless you are doing something higher up.

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 00:16

They were useless when I tried them because I've been with all sorts of companies and have followed no direction whatsoever.

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 00:17

I have the same problem with them because my career path is nowhere near linear.

After the AAT you can go into the more professional qualifications from several bodies, such as ACCA, CIMA and ICAEW.

These are much harder work but you get to call yourself an accountant after it.

  • Alison07/09/2009 at 00:18

I have the same problem with them because my career path is nowhere near linear.

Hehehe I'm 21 and I actually think I run out of fingers if I try and list the things I've tried my hand at....

I should say that I don't believe you need to do anything like the AAT first, it depends on your experience and how fast you pick things up. But I think it helps.

  • Alison07/09/2009 at 00:19

Okay and why would you choose one over another? Is it to do with the area of accounting you want to go into or is it more to do with individual preference?

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 00:19

Hehehe I'm 21 and I actually think I run out of fingers if I try and list the things I've tried my hand at....

You can get away with anything until you finish your degree. After that it gets taken a bit more seriously

  • Alison07/09/2009 at 00:21

You can get away with anything until you finish your degree. After that it gets taken a bit more seriously

Yeah. Tbh most of it has been part-time stuff I've done while studying. I wouldn't bother putting that on a CV.

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 00:22

Okay and why would you choose one over another? Is it to do with the area of accounting you want to go into or is it more to do with individual preference?

I'm still trying to work that part out :-)

I think ACCA is more general and financial accounting for people wanting to work in an accounting practice.

CIMA is management accounting and is helpful if you want to be an accountant for a business.

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 00:23

Yeah. Tbh most of it has been part-time stuff I've done while studying. I wouldn't bother putting that on a CV.

It's worth listing stuff like that. You are more likely to get hired if you have worked while in uni than if you haven't and especially if you have been managing things. I don't suppose it will make much difference if you stick to medecine but if you go into any kind of business it will.

  • Alison07/09/2009 at 00:26

Blimey well I've worked since I was 16. I must have had about 15 different jobs :P

I'm on my 2nd year out of uni atm and I've had decent jobs in that gap. I've done other things though like while I was at 6th form I worked as a learning support assistant. I've had a really scummy job at a cinema. I've done all the usual student junk like bar work. I've done stuff at uni with Aim Higher. I've worked in a supermarket.

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 00:28

I am going to bed at a sensible time for once. I am going to watch the Sky at Night in bed to see how they do the story they have nicked from my sidepodspace show. You just can't trust Patrick Moore.

CIMA is management accounting and is helpful if you want to be an accountant for a business.

    Okay thanks :D

That's really helpful. It is SO confusing! How easy is it to find jobs where they help you with the training?

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 00:37

That's really helpful. It is SO confusing! How easy is it to find jobs where they help you with the training?

There is some crossover I think, I mean if you want to be a management accountant you can take ACCA. I get a bit muddled with it myself because I still haven't decided whether I'm studying on so I haven't looked in detail.

For jobs, I was lucky in that I had my job in the accounts dept before they offered me the AAT course. When you sign up to one of the courses they will send you a monthly magazine which has job ads in it, and you should also sign up for PQ Magazine which you should get for free as an accounting student, lots of good advice and job ads in there.

Otherwise check your local paper for companies looking for people to train up. Their help can extend to the basic time off, up to paying for the course, exam fees, and allowing study days leading up to the exams.

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 00:38

The other thing is recruitment consultants. I know Steven and I have had bad experiences with them, but the specialist ones like Hays Accountancy should be able to help out because accountancy is a specific direction.

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 00:40

e.g. My company pays my course fees (inc. books) and paid half a day's pay for my full day at college... I paid my (rather hefty) exam entry fees.

It varies per company. I don't work for an accountancy firm, they can be a bit less lenient.

  • Alison07/09/2009 at 00:42

It's for my sister. The firm she works for at the moment helps people do CIMA. I think they pay the exam fees and give you some course materials. We couldn't work out if you could go into another area with that qualification though. Like if you decided you wanted to do tax or audit or something would you need to do another qualification as well?

  • Amy07/09/2009 at 00:42

morning all. I was so early to work today i had time to go and buy breakfast. Clearly 4 hours sleep is my optimum. ;)

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 00:43

What sort of experience / background knowledge do you have? There's a hell of a lot more to it than producing P&L statements. I mean going into AAT 1st year is probably going to bore you to tears, but it might be worth the 2nd or 3rd year through a college (if you get a good one).

The other thing to note is colleges can vary greatly in how they deliver it. Mine was good because it was all in one day. Some only do evenings and don't cover half as much, you have to do that at home. We've had someone change to a different college because work told them to, then come back to us for the 3rd year because it was so much better..

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 00:44

morning all. I was so early to work today i had time to go and buy breakfast. Clearly 4 hours sleep is my optimum. ;)

Ahh ok. CIMA has taxation modules so should think it would be fine. But if she wants to specialise in tax she'd probably want to take the ATT (not AAT) which is the association of tax practicioners.

  • Alison07/09/2009 at 00:46

Ahh ok. CIMA has taxation modules so should think it would be fine. But if she wants to specialise in tax she'd probably want to take the ATT (not AAT) which is the association of tax practicioners.

She really doesn't know which part she's interested in I don't think. I think mainly it's chartered she wants to do. She's just thinking about the CIMA because she has a job that'd help her do that one.

  • Amy07/09/2009 at 00:50

i wish i had done accountancy at uni :(

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 00:50

She doesn't really have ANY experience. Too hard to start off with then?

Intermediate Level of AAT (2nd year) is equivalent to NVQ/SVQ level 3 and is a touch higher than A-Level.

Final year of AAT is equivalent to NVQ/SVQ level 4 and some describe it as being like year one of a degree.

The first year of ACCA/CIMA/etc starts at that level and ramps up quickly. I mean, once I pass AAT Lvl 4 I get exemptions from most of yr 1 of ACCA/CIMA

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 00:51

Right, that's all the 5am stuff prepped. Time to get some of that elusive, Sunday night sleep I've heard about

  • Bassano Clapper07/09/2009 at 00:54

Night... not sure you'll do well on 3hrs sleep..

Every other Monday is pretty much like this. I'm kinda used to it

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 00:56

I think she needs to chat with people at work who will know her level. She might be able to jump into ACCA/CIMA yr1 with a bit of help and support.

The other thing to note is ACCA offer their own version of Technican, which is called CAT, which isn't as officially-recognised as AAT. If she needs to do a course below ACCA/CIMA she should do AAT - you can join at any of the 3 levels.

(Posting from Ye Olde 'cos the live solutions died!)

well done on having a productive night! I am planning an early night so if you see me commenting past 2pm your time please ignore me. I think mr c's threat of moderation might work. I literally had a nightmare about it. I am going to buy a lonely planet guide today, hooray!

  • Alison07/09/2009 at 01:02

    Hello?

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 01:02

I think she needs to chat with people at work who will know her level. She might be able to jump into ACCA/CIMA yr1 with a bit of help and support.

She could also call the different bodies and explain the situation, I've heard they are all helpful. To be honest I've not tried.

  • Alison07/09/2009 at 01:03

    Woooo!

Yeah. I've caught up on a lot of my work and I've learned about 10 hours worth of research on accounting qualifications. Thanks so much Pat!!

Speaking of which, it is now 2am and I'm waaay over my personal deadline for staying up on a work night. Goodnight!

Alison, if your sister needs more advice I'm happy to answer anything I've forgotten. I'm planning a proper research sesh on the different bodies soon.

  • Alison07/09/2009 at 01:03

    Thanks again :)

    :( What is a borg? :(

  • Amy07/09/2009 at 02:43

the borg were humanoids in star trek who could convert others into borgs as they sought to make their kind perfect. I guess they didnt sleep as they werent people. Resistance is futile! Or, Finnish ;)

  • Alison07/09/2009 at 02:44

Ah I see. I could only think of Bjorn Borg :P

LOL That's always good - I play with my workmates for DKK50 but it often gets a little wild at the end! I'm just happy to have fun and break even though!

  • Journeyer07/09/2009 at 06:49

Journeyer – turns out you weren’t the only lucky Filipino this weekend!

Indeed. But there's still 12 dead and 63 missing. However, more than 900 have been saved.

As it turns out, one of the survivors was our former family driver - we found out when he was interviewed on TV! He said they survived by hanging on to the hull of the ship. The ship eventually sank after being on its side for a few hours, but stayed afloat long enough for them to be rescued.

I read in the papers here that there is something suspicious about that sinking as the ferry was rather new and in good condition

I started out down by a lot - around double the initial buy-in (yep, had to buy in twice). But once I got settled in, I clawed my way back to the black. A little luck helped me out too. I ended up winning 5 times the initial buy-in.

  • Journeyer07/09/2009 at 06:55

It could be a navigation error. I don't think it was a terrorist attack (too weak) or an insurance claim (the company's too rich for that).

  • F1Wolf07/09/2009 at 06:55

From the little Italian I understand, it was Liuzzi himself who confirmed it by phone. I'm surprised he didn't let the team announce it first?

googletranslated liuzzi stroy - I hope the link is working

...Why am I not going to Finland? ;)

  • Christine07/09/2009 at 09:24

Alianora has had to pull out of Sidepodradio altogether, so I'm taking over the F1 Top 5 show (unless anyone else wants it?)

What I would love is for people to leave a voicemail of complete top 5 lists. Just spend five minutes dreaming up your top 5, and then call it in. I can compile them and make the show.

There's more info, some suggestions, and a table to claim your topic if you want to get involved on the wiki.

0121 28 87225. Come on, you know you want to. Plus, it would make my life soooo much easier. :)

Joe Saward's 'bizarre' scoop on his blog:

    With Monza ahead

The recent weeks have thus seen negotiations to find a way to get Raikkonen to agree to give up his 2010 contract. The word is that Kimi will be paid $35m NOT to race for Ferrari, plus being paid bonuses for any results that he achieves with whichever team he moves to in 2010, plus a bonus if Alonso wins the title.

This bizarre arrangement makes sense for Ferrari as it is saving $50m on Kimi’s basic salary and the team can afford to pay Alonso a sensible salary and still make a substantial saving…

BTW, according to Joe, Kimi's basic salary is currently valued at... USD85M PER YEAR. Stupid recession.

Of course, this is all dependent on Alonso's fate at the Paris hearing the week of the Singapore GP.

  • Amy07/09/2009 at 10:03

Joe Saward's 'bizarre' scoop on his blog:

I saw a tweet linking to the entry that just said "Kimi's going to be paid $35m not to drive next year?" which to me reads very differently to "Kimi will be paid $35m NOT to race for Ferrari" because I don't care where he is as long as he is there

  • Paul07/09/2009 at 10:03

Of course, this is all dependent on Alonso's fate at the Paris hearing the week of the Singapore GP.

Not sure it's Alonso's fate is it? Has he been implicated?

  • Paul07/09/2009 at 10:04

Joe Saward's 'bizarre' scoop on his blog:

This could be expensive if Kimi went back to McLaren and dominated.

  • Amy07/09/2009 at 10:05

Not sure it's Alonso's fate is it? Has he been implicated?

he started with ridiculous fuel and the wrong tyres. The key bits Joe points out: Alonso and his engineers would logically have argued against such a strategy as it offered little or no chance of success. If they accepted the strategy without question one must ask why.

  • Paul07/09/2009 at 10:09

he started with ridiculous fuel and the wrong tyres. The key bits Joe points out: Alonso and his engineers would logically have argued against such a strategy as it offered little or no chance of success. If they accepted the strategy without question one must ask why.

Yeah I just read this. However, he is paid to do what the team wants, regardless.

  • Journeyer07/09/2009 at 10:18

Not sure it’s Alonso’s fate is it? Has he been implicated?

As the main beneficiary of the alleged plan, he may end up being implicated. Joe explained it clearly on his blog why he may be implicated.

This could be expensive if Kimi went back to McLaren and dominated.

But if he dominates, there won't be any bonus for Alonso winning the title. So it'll probably just even out.

  • F1Wolf07/09/2009 at 10:20

Yeah I just read this. However, he is paid to do what the team wants, regardless.

true, but if that includes cheating there may be price to pay as Hamilton and McLaren found out in Melbourne ...

  • Journeyer07/09/2009 at 10:21

Yeah I just read this. However, he is paid to do what the team wants, regardless.

I don't think so - Alonso isn't just a paid drone. That's not his personality. Also, if Alonso was willing to tell on McLaren in Hungary 2007, by principle, he should've been willing to tattle in Singapore 2008, even if the alleged plot is to his advantage.

  • Journeyer07/09/2009 at 10:21

true, but if that includes cheating there may be price to pay as Hamilton and McLaren found out in Melbourne …

I have no idea what went on in Renault between Sat and Sun in Singapore last year, but there is still a very valid possibility, that Alonso went for that utterly ridiculous strategy because he really had nothing to loose. may not be the most popular opinion of the moment but still, innocent until proven guilty

I agree. I don't particularly like Renault, or Alonso, but I just can't believe they would plan a crash to try to win a race. It's beyond belief.

Ok, I know Senna and MS were up for it, but still.....

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/09/2009 at 10:36

I have no idea what went on in Renault between Sat and Sun in Singapore last year, but there is still a very valid possibility, that Alonso went for that utterly ridiculous strategy because he really had nothing to loose. may not be the most popular opinion of the moment but still, innocent until proven guilty

He could have been convinced by his engineers and the computer readouts. Who knows? But I doubt if Renault are guilty that he is 100% innocent. I don't think he should get banned though. You do what the team tells you to or you're out the door!

  • F1Wolf07/09/2009 at 10:37

You do what the team tells you to or you're out the door!

... hasn't that happened to Alonso once already ? :-)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/09/2009 at 10:37

how did ferrari ever agree to pay kimi as much as they did in the first place?

they asked Kimi : " Would $XX mil be enough ? " and he said "Yes" :-)

With Kimi the way he is, perhaps they kept raising the offer because he didn't look too excited about driving for Ferrari.

    Oh wait... ;)

  • F1Wolf07/09/2009 at 10:38

Isn't this whole sport about the best device?

I like KERS - bring it on

  • Journeyer07/09/2009 at 10:46

Isn’t this whole sport about the best device?

I pity the title contenders, though. They'll all be lucky to score some points. That said, that'll suit Button pretty well.

  • Alex Andronov07/09/2009 at 10:46

I'll try and do something... I am very worried about the Friday deadline though for my shows...

We may be able to stretch it a little for someone doing four shows.

    #classified

    I'll let you know.

Well in the "Good Old Days" a driver had to use skill and overtake to win a race... sadly this is not required as much anymore :(

  • Alex Andronov07/09/2009 at 10:46

sooo Alex, I still see no blog post.

I have finished writing it... It's with Editorial...

  • Alex Andronov07/09/2009 at 10:47

Hehe. How'd it go, all sorted?

  • F1Wolf07/09/2009 at 10:49

  • Journeyer07/09/2009 at 10:50

how did ferrari ever agree to pay kimi as much as they did in the first place?

they underestimated massa. had they known massa would be this good, no way would they have paid kimi that much.

Aparently, tomorrow, Samoa change from driving on the right to driving on the left. That should make for a fun day’s driving!!

:D it'll be crazy - left-hand drive cars driving on the left side of the road?!

  • James07/09/2009 at 10:51

So a collision into the first corner then? :D

Well in the “Good Old Days” a driver had to use skill and overtake to win a race… sadly this is not required as much anymore

It'll still be required - if it ends up with Ferrari, McLaren, and Renault all at the front, they all have KERS, so it'll cancel out. It'll be back down to skill - or us watching a high-speed convoy.

  • Paul07/09/2009 at 10:52

:D it'll be crazy - left-hand drive cars driving on the left side of the road?!

    hehehehe.

  • James07/09/2009 at 10:54

You have to wonder what shape the Renault KERS is in, they haven't used it Bahrain?

  • Journeyer07/09/2009 at 10:54

So a collision into the first corner then?

The Retifillo is rather tight - expect a couple of cars to go over the kerbs. Let's see if anyone tries to cut chicanes.

  • Alex Andronov07/09/2009 at 10:59

Hehe. How'd it go, all sorted?

Yeah... Almost all of it went well... We had a few issues with some things that apparently been working based on SQL Server 7 settings which apparently still worked in SQL 2000 but shouldn't have so wasn't in the documentation.

And we had a set of users that got missed out of a group. But in the main it was good.

We maintained a pace of putting fires out faster than they started which is a good sign. The main next worry is when the share prices flow in unassisted tonight or don't!

  • Dank07/09/2009 at 10:59

That's a high pressure environment for an upgrade. It's quite annoying that upgrades seem such a gamble.

I'm about to start a few myself. Luckily not as time-critical, and they are virtual machines so I can just roll back and try again if things don't work out

  • Alex Andronov07/09/2009 at 11:07

Poor Badoer just can’t let go of the fact that he didn’t exactly live up to his dream performance in the Ferrari. Whilst he says that he’s proud of what he achieved and can always say he raced two GPs for a top team – he reckons the media’s bad vibes about him forced the team to replace him. Hmm.

I guess he's just a tad bitter he fell one race short of fulfilling his dream of racing for Ferrari at Monza.

  • Journeyer07/09/2009 at 11:14

ooooh! but will FOM be ready? they’re adding x1 HD camera a race.

This is actually interesting - FTA:

Each Grand Prix is produced by German broadcaster RTL in conjunction with the local host broadcaster. LIVE is hoping that it can strike a deal to produce HD broadcasts of the event as a test case for the sport's future.

RTL produces all of it now for FOM? If so, good job! I don't see any reason why a deal can't be made for HD.

That said, Star only broadcasts here in SD, so the difference would be minimal at best.

  • me07/09/2009 at 11:14

Neither do I hence my surprise...

i'm expecting in a couple of hours time, you'll be a bit stressed out because the windows 3.11 machine running foxpro can no longer receive any data ;)

Is that what killed the Sidepodcst Dropio before?

video doesn't even kill the drop.io

  • me07/09/2009 at 11:29

    What did then?

last time alison asked this question, a hundred comments came in on the subject and likely confused the poor lady. so... alison, do what i just suggested and ignore everything else, ta.

    ...

right. the drop died because last year the lovely people at drop.io set up a special account with a kajillion billion megabits of storage for us. and after a year that account timed out.

because the drop is special, no-one was accounting for it happening. now they've reset it but it may or may not happen again next year. i'm not sure.

you can set up as many free drops as you like, thousands of people do every day. it won't break sidepoddrop.

steven also has set up a special sidepodradio drop, but ignore that for the moment, because neither christine or i are around to move files in and out as required. a secret drop is what alison needs.

    ...

ok alison, you can look again now.

  • Paul07/09/2009 at 11:31

ok alison, you can look again now.

Are you sure it wasn't crazed extortionists?

When I've gone to upload files in my own drop it gave me the option of going to my unique 'Hidden Uploader' where people can drop things without knowing the URL.

We've already established that I don't understand the drop so maybe this is a stupid solution :P

Free drops are awesome - I use one as a backup for my F1 spreadsheets. It's really fast at uploading and downloading and the URL's make it easy to share. It really is a brilliant service!

Just been looking at the BBC's best of Monza pick for the red button this week (sorry if already discussed).

    We've got

    1988, 1990, 1995, 1999 and 2004.

I know it was only last year but I thought 2008 was a great GP! I remember being stuck in Cornwall on a caravaning family holiday (yawn). The conditions for me and Kay to go on holiday was that we watched the GP on Sunday with no questions asked. I think the family thought 'yeah right they'll be out with us come sunday'. Anyway after wandering around penzance on the Saturday we finally found a pub for some lunchtime nosh. It was Man Utd v Liverpool and the pub we were in was heaving, every screen in sight (30+ tv screens) had the football on.

Knowing that qualifying was on I kept on diving next door to Radio Rentals to watch it through the window but couldn't find a tv displaying it. Convinced the usual pecking order would be installed at Monza I gave up trying to find coverage and went back to my meal (no 3g signal to let me log onto Sidepodcast whilst in penzance also). By about 13.55 I was getting really anxious to know the grid line up, storming off in a sulk to get a beer (family I was with only cared about the football) I noticed in a tiny tv hidden in the corner of the bar showing Seb Vettel just crossing the line to take pole. I shouted a rather loud 'Come on' (insert F word at beginning) only for a scouse fan to tap me on the shoulder and say 'steady on fella it's only a goal kick'. I sheepisly turned back round to look at the screen to find where Lewis, Kimi and the others were. I then proceeded to drop my newly bought pint all over my feet in a state of shock as I scanned down the timesheets and saw the big guns down in 12, 14, 15th etc!!

Don't know why I felt liek sharing that but there you go! Monza 2008 for me!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/09/2009 at 12:47

Just been looking at the BBC's best of Monza pick for the red button this week (sorry if already discussed).

Not a great selection TBH - so I asked for 1988 as the old races fascinate me!

  • Alison07/09/2009 at 12:56

Not a great selection TBH - so I asked for 1988 as the old races fascinate me!

I like their highlights. I don't know any F1 history at all. It's nice to collect some!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/09/2009 at 12:56

Does it? In what mode? Doohickey and look OK? Just thought I'd try it out - didn't realise it would break anything - sorry :(

it doesn't break, it's just the whole comment goes green. very hard to read.

I'm just trying to find a way to link to an old comment like Alia does - I think it would be useful to do sometimes...

  • me07/09/2009 at 12:59

I'm just trying to find a way to link to an old comment like Alia does - I think it would be useful to do sometimes...

really? i kinda wish alia would just click to quote like everybody else. anyone, think we need a better way of finding previous comments?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/09/2009 at 13:05

really? i kinda wish alia would just click to quote like everybody else. anyone, think we need a better way of finding previous comments?

I like click to quote - but let's say I go away for a few hours, and while catching up with old comments I decide to quote and reply - this would mean that my response does not appear hours later and those reading it may not know the context of the quote... so it is usefuk I think..,

  • Alison07/09/2009 at 13:05

I like their highlights. I don't know any F1 history at all. It's nice to collect some!

What I don't like though is that the highlights from all the other races from the past year are still up there but you're doing better than me if you can find them....

  • me07/09/2009 at 13:09

I like click to quote - but let's say I go away for a few hours, and while catching up with old comments I decide to quote and reply - this would mean that my response does not appear hours later and those reading it may not know the context of the quote... so it is usefuk I think..,

hmmm. surely the context is given by the bit you quote?

you're welcome to copy alia's style of bracketing quotes, if you like. it seems like an insane amount of work to me, but anything rather than turning a paragraph of text into a link ;)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/09/2009 at 13:15

hmmm. surely the context is given by the bit you quote?

Not always. Here is an example:

Wooo half an hour of productive joy. My head’s starting to hurt though :(

If I respond to this quote, does it not matter where it was during the conversation?

  • me07/09/2009 at 13:18

If I respond to this quote, does it not matter where it was during the conversation?

not to me, no. i'll have a go...

    ...

Wooo half an hour of productive joy. My head’s starting to hurt though :(

damn i wish i was productive. wouldn't swap it for a sore head mind you.

    ...

as a conversation that makes sense right? and if i need more context, i could filter on the word productive and see what was said about being productive and by whom.

what extra info would a link give me?

  • Christine07/09/2009 at 13:20

I had a few minutes so created the breakout threads:

just a thought gavin, but breakouts threads are going to kill your linking plan.

if christine is now going back and moving old comments, links will likely break left, right and center.

So in other words, the quote IS the context and we should comment with this in mind to ensure we can understood better?

absolutely, that's always the way we've approached it.

RTL produces all of it now for FOM? If so, good job! I don't see any reason why a deal can't be made for HD.

that's just wrong isn't it? i didn't think local host broadcasters existed anymore?

It is Wrong FOM do the TV, we saw some of them on martys latest gridwalk.. The article is by an ITP publication, i am quite familiar with the company. They are usually very good and their are some great journalists there, unfortunaltly there are one or 2 clowns as well. I have commented

Today's activities on the ISS are limited to loading finishing loading anythig that needs to be returned to Earth into the Leonardo multi-purpose logistics module. The Leonardo module will then be picked up byt the main robotic arm on the ISS and will undock from the the station and be placed in the payload bay of the shuttle.

At 10:30 pm Eastern tonight / 3:30 am tomorrow morning the hatches between the shuttle and the station will be closed ending joint operations.

I cannot believe how quickly this mission has passed.

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 17:22

And if MW is just stirring the driver market?

There are three possibilities as I see it

    1. They are talking to Kimi and want to make it clear they know Kimi is being pushed rather than jumping

    2. They have signed Alonso and want to wind up Ferrari

    3. He was just stirring things

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 17:23

“… what was the best car you ever drove’ and Kimi wearing red in the Ferrari hospitality suite ‘…the 2005 Mclaren”

Well he did start by talking about the 2007 Ferrari and let's face it the guy cannot lie... he was asked about which car suited his style most... I don't think anyone could disagree that he and the 2005 Macca were made for each other....

But it was funny to see him saying that in the Ferrari suite... I agree...

Give him his due though... if Ferrari have really been trying to save the $85 mill per year they signed up for (clever Kimi, stupid Ferrari) he has been remarkably nice about them....

No but it is a personal pic of you (and a very nice one at that ;) ). IMO, your face is yours alone and not for public use, even if you have it in a profile pic.

I'd use that for a proper image which I was planning to make money from (so remember that for later, Lou). But for a profile pic a softer approach is required, IMO.

What the heck is a flap-track mechanism?

Essentially its the rail that the flaps run on as they extend out from the wings to increase surface area.

I'll find a pic, hang on

They played a new song earlier not ehard before, off the new album, and it was NOTHING like theyve ever done. Think Timbaland meets Depeche Mode.

As frightening as that sounds, it was just.... wow.

Evening everyone. Tonight I am commnting from a Pizza Express restaurant which I am trapped in by myself for work reasons.

Two things I am watching friends on my iPhone which is inconveniant because people keep coming and asking me questions like... What would you like to eat.

Second. The restaurant is good but it does use capital letters on its menu so I should probably dock some points.

It really should be terrible. It has to be terrible. Even comparing it to Timbaland makes me feel dirty and icky. But it just.... works. I can't stand the genre of music it relates to but it actually works!

i'll watch motogp... but it just doesn't interest me as much as F1..i honestly love everything to do with F1 (except well.. some of the politics)... i'm kinda happy with the racing in F1 tbh.. yes more overtaking would be nice but we have good and bad races.. and the bad races make you appreciate the good races more... plus bikes don't really fascinate me as much as f1 cars do.. and i'm always so scared that one of the motogp guys is going to get killed or something...

    Not on most tracks.

I'm not interested in it like F1 - I just like the racing and the entertainment. Plus the riders have loads more character than most F1 drivers...

  • me07/09/2009 at 19:19

here's the gagdet show f1 episode, cheers steven.

  • me07/09/2009 at 19:20

something about a last lap close finish. was very boring.

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 19:20

But... does it have Rubens and Jenson?

Last year they had this British kid that kept saying "and stuff" at the end of every sentence and stuff. He's really good and stuff, but hopefully this isn't the start of a new trend to replace y'know and stuff.

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 19:21

  • me07/09/2009 at 19:23

Was that because you didn't know them? I mean.. if you watched a few races you'd get to know them.

it just didn't interest me. the bikes look tiny on a huge circuit, and if that's the best the sport had to offer, i don't think i'm missing anything.

  • Bassano Clapper07/09/2009 at 19:25

It's their reforming gig tonight! And I had tickets :(

I didn't need to hear that

Isabel usually get's through at least two bottles of wine

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 19:25

Is that Bradley Smith? He's only 17!

Yeah! And it wasn't long into the season, but he was setting them on fire. Suzi Perry interviewed him. Maybe he got flustered :-) I bet he got a good PR talking to after that.

No-one can help but like Rossi. He has more personality than the full F1 grid and despite being more successful than Schumacher is not remotely big headed and is not remotely serious and ground down.

  • Bassano Clapper07/09/2009 at 19:27

  • me07/09/2009 at 19:29

To me a good race is a good race and I don't have to get into it to like it... I just can't understand your reaction, is all...

don't know how else to explain it. bikes don't mean anything to me. hold no interest in any way shape or form.

i was bored watching the 'action', it looked rather slow and easy, i'd give it 0/10 only because -1 wasn't available.

  • RG07/09/2009 at 19:29

He started in 125cc at 16.

Imagine if you are just ahead of him and look over your shoulder and see a grinning donkey.

  • me07/09/2009 at 19:30

Can you confirm you are not the same James that nicked my keeping spot while I was on holiday and got the teams first ever clean sheet?

    hehehe.

  • Scott Woodwiss07/09/2009 at 19:30

On Mercedes looking to take a stake in Brawn, does this mean that the team will start to look more like a works Mercedes team, or is McLaren still filling that role in F1 more, do we think?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/09/2009 at 19:30

    Is that Office 2007?

    It is indeed :)

I wish I could upgrade - the graphs look so much better than 2003!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/09/2009 at 19:30

No-one can help but like Rossi

    i can't stand that man.

Oh come on! you're just winding me up now!

  • RG07/09/2009 at 19:31

Yeah, but can he predict the future?

    True. Now, I'm happy again.

  • lou07/09/2009 at 19:31

He was racing 125s in the world championship at 15. He looked about 11.

    *googles Bradley Smith* i see...

  • Bassano Clapper07/09/2009 at 19:31

I wish I could upgrade - the graphs look so much better than 2003!

Boys, are you Geeking out over Excel?

  • me07/09/2009 at 19:31

Oh come on! you're just winding me up now!

no. i would really not be happy if he came to f1.

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 19:32

    i can't stand that man.

You are just trying to stir an argument now. Everyone loves Rossi. It's the law

  • James07/09/2009 at 19:32

Can you confirm you are not the same James that nicked my keeping spot while I was on holiday and got the teams first ever clean sheet?

I could if I had any idea what you were talking about :p

I wish I could upgrade - the graphs look so much better than 2003!

They are! and much quicker to change the layouts/styles.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/09/2009 at 19:32

    Unbelievable!

Gavin, its like me trying to convince people non-league football is worthwhile, while you know its the best, people more often than not disagree

Yeah I can see that. I just can't see how someone could think F1 needs more action and then completely hate another kind full of it.

I watch different series for different reasons - they all complement each other. If they were all the same then they would be boring!

  • me07/09/2009 at 19:32

You are just trying to stir an argument now. Everyone loves Rossi. It's the law

honest. i swear to god. i do not like him.

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 19:33

don't know how else to explain it. bikes don't mean anything to me. hold no interest in any way shape or form.

I don't care about bikes unless they are racing.

I don't care about racing bikes if they are racing on dirt.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/09/2009 at 19:33

I wish I could upgrade - the graphs look so much better than 2003!

Boys, are you Geeking out over Excel?

Well it is important for my blog...

  • RG07/09/2009 at 19:33

I could if I had any idea what you were talking about :p

I spend two years as the teams goalkeeper, go away for two weeks and they decide its a good time to hire a second keeper and keep a clean sheet. Makes me angry, very very angry.

  • Lukeh07/09/2009 at 19:33

You are just trying to stir an argument now. Everyone loves Rossi. It's the law

I'm neutral to him, but that's because I don't really take much notice to Moto GP.

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 19:33

On Mercedes looking to take a stake in Brawn, does this mean that the team will start to look more like a works Mercedes team, or is McLaren still filling that role in F1 more, do we think?

It doesn't affect McLaren's position. Mercedes may have several motives but they will get a Brawn stake very cheaply just now.

  • lou07/09/2009 at 19:33

no. i would really not be happy if he came to f1.

is he like the man who must not be named who cheats and nearly ruined this f1 season for us?

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 19:33

Makes me feel like I've done nothing.

I didn't feel that until 25 when Alonso won the WDC.

  • RG07/09/2009 at 19:33

I spend two years as the teams goalkeeper, go away for two weeks and they decide its a good time to hire a second keeper and keep a clean sheet. Makes me angry, very very angry.

Although we are now third in the league, and thats sorta the background on my computer now.

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 19:34

honest. i swear to god. i do not like him.

Why not? Rossi is like the anti-Schumacher

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/09/2009 at 19:34

no. i would really not be happy if he came to f1.

is he like the man who must not be named who cheats and nearly ruined this f1 season for us?

No, he's nothing like him. Everyone likes Rossi - he wins in style and entertains us all.

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 19:35

I spend two years as the teams goalkeeper, go away for two weeks and they decide its a good time to hire a second keeper and keep a clean sheet. Makes me angry, very very angry.

Why take holidays during the season?

  • lou07/09/2009 at 19:35

No, he's nothing like him. Everyone likes Rossi - he wins in style and entertains us all.

so he is the Alonso of the MotoGP world?

  • Scott Woodwiss07/09/2009 at 19:35

is he like the man who must not be named who cheats and nearly ruined this f1 season for us?

I've seen no evidence of Rossi cheating, so therefore he is not like THAT man.

  • me07/09/2009 at 19:35

is he like the man who must not be named who cheats and nearly ruined this f1 season for us?

not so much. he wins all the time, which is very boring. but he's just an annoying person.

the whole will he/won't he come to f1 really wound me up.

    like f1 needs him anyhow?

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 19:35

You are just trying to stir an argument now. Everyone loves Rossi. It's the law

He's why I started watching MotoGP. The things he did with the Honda..

  • Nick07/09/2009 at 19:35

On Webber... was he in the BBC commentary box? Or was it for an Aussie channel?

  • RG07/09/2009 at 19:35

Why take holidays during the season?

I didn't. The league thought it would be a good idea to start the season a week earlier.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/09/2009 at 19:36

No, he's nothing like him. Everyone likes Rossi - he wins in style and entertains us all.

so he is the Alonso of the MotoGP world?

Better. when he wins, he always does something funny!

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 19:36

I spend two years as the teams goalkeeper, go away for two weeks and they decide its a good time to hire a second keeper and keep a clean sheet. Makes me angry, very very angry.

What I'm getting here is you are really bad at laundry

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 19:36

is he like the man who must not be named who cheats and nearly ruined this f1 season for us?

Think of the precise opposite. That's Rossi.

  • lou07/09/2009 at 19:37

    like f1 needs him anyhow?

tis a good point... i'd rather see Loeb have a go in F1 if i'm honest

  • RG07/09/2009 at 19:37

What I'm getting here is you are really bad at laundry

    haha :D

  • Nick07/09/2009 at 19:37

    *Cough*

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 19:37

so he is the Alonso of the MotoGP world?

    yes, but more so

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 19:37

so he is the Alonso of the MotoGP world?

Not remotely. Rossi left Honda when they owned the world championship and went to Yamaha who were rubbish and had been for years. People said it would take him two years to win a race. He won his first race and the first championship.

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 19:37

On Webber... was he in the BBC commentary box? Or was it for an Aussie channel?

    Eurosport

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 19:37

I've seen no evidence of Rossi cheating, so therefore he is not like THAT man.

    He doesn't need to cheat

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/09/2009 at 19:37

is he like the man who must not be named who cheats and nearly ruined this f1 season for us?

not so much. he wins all the time, which is very boring. but he's just an annoying person.

the whole will he/won't he come to f1 really wound me up.

    like f1 needs him anyhow?

But he doesn't win all the time and when he does win, he has to fight for it.

This year has been brilliant because Lorenzo has been very quick but Rossi has beat him in the head. Mega battles all year!

  • Bassano Clapper07/09/2009 at 19:38

On Webber... was he in the BBC commentary box? Or was it for an Aussie channel?

I heard him on UK Eurosport

  • me07/09/2009 at 19:38

tis a good point... i'd rather see Loeb have a go in F1 if i'm honest

the thing with loeb. he'll just do it.

he won't need x3 tests a load of PR fuss and attention, and then decide to back out, because "bikes are more important".

    screw you rossi ;)

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 19:38

the whole will he/won't he come to f1 really wound me up.

    like f1 needs him anyhow?

Do you feel the same about Loeb?

  • Nick07/09/2009 at 19:38

I heard him on UK Eurosport

Cheers i will have a look

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 19:38

On Webber... was he in the BBC commentary box? Or was it for an Aussie channel?

I am sure it was BBC

  • Christine07/09/2009 at 19:38

    screw you rossi ;)

Now you really are just trying to wind people up! :)

  • lou07/09/2009 at 19:39

    screw you rossi ;)

    hehe :)

  • RG07/09/2009 at 19:39

Now you really are just trying to wind people up! :)

When he says a certain driver in red rocks, then I'll get suspicious.

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 19:39

tis a good point... i'd rather see Loeb have a go in F1 if i'm honest

I would love to see both of them in F1

  • me07/09/2009 at 19:39

Do you feel the same about Loeb?

he's no where near as prissy or pretentious. he just gets in and drives.

if ferrari offered him a seat he'd take it. rossi's a wimp.

  • Bassano Clapper07/09/2009 at 19:40

he won't need x3 tests a load of PR fuss and attention, and then decide to back out, because "bikes are more important".

I think Ferrari are partly to blame for a lot of that noise

  • me07/09/2009 at 19:40

Now you really are just trying to wind people up! :)

ahh shucks. if someone tells me i HAVE to like bikes. what am i gonna do?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/09/2009 at 19:40

Um? That's really unfair. The guy is a showman, he was hired to make a fuss.

Loeb has had a lot of PR and fuss - look at all the stories about him coming to F1 since Bourdais got sacked.

At least Rossi isn't wasting his career in a useless defunct class of motorsport with no competition.

  • me07/09/2009 at 19:40

I think Ferrari are partly to blame for a lot of that noise

sure, but he still wimped out.

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 19:40

the thing with loeb. he'll just do it.

Loeb is doing one race at the end of the season then some winter testing because he can't test now. Same difference

  • Bassano Clapper07/09/2009 at 19:40

I am sure it was BBC

    Same commentators?

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 19:40

I am sure it was BBC

    It wasn't.

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 19:42

he's no where near as prissy or pretentious. he just gets in and drives.

Rossi prissy? Have you seen his celebrations.

    Pretentious? Don't think so.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/09/2009 at 19:42

if ferrari offered him a seat he'd take it. rossi's a wimp.

Stop it. You are just trying to wind me up. That is totally unfair and I won't fall for it just to make a fuss here. You carry on not watching MotoGP and we'll just go ahead and enjoy it.

Meanwhile, have fun counting the overtaking moves in F1 on one hand ;)

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 19:43

ahh shucks. if someone tells me i HAVE to like bikes. what am i gonna do?

If Franck decides to try Moto GP will you watch? If so you may as well watch now so that you are clued up for his arrival

  • RG07/09/2009 at 19:43

Meanwhile, have fun counting the overtaking moves in F1 on one hand ;)

But the race lasts less than 60 mins.

  • Christine07/09/2009 at 19:43

If Franck decides to try Moto GP will you watch? If so you may as well watch now so that you are clued up for his arrival

    I wouldn't.

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 19:43

sure, but he still wimped out.

I don't think racing bikes at 200mph can be wimping out

  • me07/09/2009 at 19:43

You carry on not watching MotoGP and we'll just go ahead and enjoy it.

of course. be my guest. i don't begrudge anyone watching it.

am just saying i watched and was bored. that's fair isn't it?

  • Bassano Clapper07/09/2009 at 19:43

But the race lasts less than 60 mins.

    And?

  • me07/09/2009 at 19:44

If Franck decides to try Moto GP will you watch?

    sadly not. christine?

  • Bassano Clapper07/09/2009 at 19:44

If Franck decides to try Moto GP will you watch? If so you may as well watch now so that you are clued up for his arrival

    Pants on fire :)

  • RG07/09/2009 at 19:44

    And?

It seems so short for something which happens once every two weeks.

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 19:44

But the race lasts less than 60 mins.

    They meet the podcast rule

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 19:44

    I wouldn't.

    Why not?

  • me07/09/2009 at 19:44

If Franck decides to try Moto GP will you watch? If so you may as well watch now so that you are clued up for his arrival

    w00t!

    i married a good 'un.

  • Christine07/09/2009 at 19:45

    Why not?

Because I don't like watching bikes race.

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 19:45

But the race lasts less than 60 mins.

    They meet the podcast rule

This is an excellent point :-)

  • lou07/09/2009 at 19:45

    They meet the podcast rule

but a race and a podcast are two different things :P

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/09/2009 at 19:45

am just saying i watched and was bored. that's fair isn't it?

Come on, that's cheeky - you know that's not the bit we all took offence to.

  • Bassano Clapper07/09/2009 at 19:45

am just saying i watched and was bored. that's fair isn't it?

Twitter bored me first time round

    It got better. Just saying

  • Bassano Clapper07/09/2009 at 19:46

It seems so short for something which happens once every two weeks.

    Football is too long

    By about 60 mins IMHO

  • me07/09/2009 at 19:46

Come on, that's cheeky - you know that's not the bit we all took offence to.

i believe and stand by what i said.

from where i'm sitting, the man chickened out of an f1 drive. twas handed to him on a plate. his choice. he bailed. fact.

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 19:46

And too frequent. Insert Mitchell & Webb sketch here. :-)

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 19:46

Because I don't like watching bikes race.

But there is a rule in Moto GP that riders must be visible to the public without their helmets for a certain period before the race

  • RG07/09/2009 at 19:47

    By about 60 mins IMHO

Football happens everyweek, even if your team isn't on, there's other games on to watch.

  • Bassano Clapper07/09/2009 at 19:47

    Not fact. Opinion.

  • Christine07/09/2009 at 19:47

But there is a rule in Moto GP that riders must be visible to the public without their helmets for a certain period before the race

Very good. I would probably look for pictures on the interwebs afterwards then.

  • Lukeh07/09/2009 at 19:48

    By about 60 mins IMHO

I did say... based on how OUCH my legs still are, I totally agree ;)

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 19:48

from where i'm sitting, the man chickened out of an f1 drive. twas handed to him on a plate. his choice. he bailed. fact.

He chickened out to take on the next big star of Moto GP in equal equipment and looks like adding another championship to his list.

  • me07/09/2009 at 19:48

    Not fact. Opinion.

did he not turn down a ferrari drive? was it not his choice?

I like this plan. World Cups are fun. I like the rugby one.

  • RG07/09/2009 at 19:48

Exactly - he has to beat Lorenzo else he'll start to lose his powers!

  • Bassano Clapper07/09/2009 at 19:49

I did say... based on how OUCH my legs still are, I totally agree ;)

  • Bassano Clapper07/09/2009 at 19:49

You'd have to move to Brazil or something

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 19:49

Mine goes to sleep and I start staring into space.

  • Lukeh07/09/2009 at 19:49

did he not turn down a ferrari drive? was it not his choice?

Maybe it was the media that forced him out. We all know thats what forced Badoer out.

    *ahem*

Of course I say forced, there's only so much force you can put upon an object of such a slow moving nature

He did turn down the drive - not to chicken out but to beat his young upstart team mate nemesis.

I seem to recall that Loeb isn't in F1 so he can win for Citroen yet you have no problem with this.

    Therefore, Opinion. Thank you.

Turning down & chickening out aren't the same though

i shoulda used a carriage return there, soz.

  • RG07/09/2009 at 19:53

  • me07/09/2009 at 19:53

It doesnt look like an f1 car...?

he had to do a run in a small car first.

  • RG07/09/2009 at 19:53

Against who? Is the lady who broke her cheekbones in the team?

Germany. And don't know about the second one.

It's turning isn't it? Dark mornings, chilly evenings... But Denmark is really a winter country so it's actually quite nice :)

    HTTT?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/09/2009 at 19:56

Question - the teams do these exhibitions with '08 cars - won't they run out of spares eventually?

  • Chris07/09/2009 at 19:57

If he didn't spin it, does that make him better than Piquet?

    HTTT?

Paul Ricard - High Tech Test Track

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/09/2009 at 19:57

renault do the HTTT thing every year. am amazed the bbc weren't invited?

    HTTT?

    High Tech Test Track.

Basically it means more data points, artificial track watering, multiple layouts and grippy tarmac runoffs.

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 19:58

Question - the teams do these exhibitions with '08 cars - won't they run out of spares eventually?

I doubt it. They can soon knock out some more

Ah but you see in Denmark they know it's going to get cold and prepare for it - and the houses are really warm too... not like the UK where apparently every year they are surprised that it gets cold in winter!

  • Nick07/09/2009 at 20:07

Ah but you see in Denmark they know it's going to get cold and prepare for it - and the houses are really warm too... not like the UK where apparently every year they are surprised that it gets cold in winter!

To be fair there is equal surprise when it gets aggressively tepid in the summer as well..

True story - I asked my Mother in Law what supplies I would need for when it snowed and the power and heating went out (as that's what happened to me in the UK) and she just laughed and said "we don't have that problem"!

Yes... mine gets a lot of views...

  • Bassano Clapper07/09/2009 at 20:29

Quick question .. is an About us page a necessity for a blog?

A little one is always nice to have. I've just got a little para on the sidebar.

  • RG07/09/2009 at 20:29

Can I just say, I now love Rob, I think he saved my bacon there.

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 20:29

    HE'S YELLOW!

    Rob is in the Simpsons?

  • Lukeh07/09/2009 at 20:29

eddie used to be funny. i swear.

Like I say, I really liked him as a team owner! He wasn't as annoying as he was now, and the team were like a little family. Then he became a pundit.

    Then he became a pundit.

    :(:(:(:(:(

  • RG07/09/2009 at 20:30

    Oh. No. You. Didn't.

    No, maybe Rob didn't. Shoot.

  • Bassano Clapper07/09/2009 at 20:30

Quick question .. is an About us page a necessity for a blog?

Yes, but it doesn't have to be linear or entirely true.

    Go random and surreal

He does say stupid things, but i guess thats half the show

Not a necessity. Although If Franck visits it is quite handy if he can find an e-mail address somewhere

  • Nick07/09/2009 at 20:35

    Thats the point though right?

I dont think hes too bad, he brings some light entertainement, and i think he is good value for people watching who arent f1 fans. In that respect he is the opposite of legard.

I wouldnt put him on a dedicated f1 package like F1+ but for the BBC he is good, and a decent foil for DC

You could put someone like ron in there who would probably know a lot more, but he would bore the tears off everyone but the dedicated fans

  • lou07/09/2009 at 20:35

    YES!

    :) yay! :)

I once tried. The next day I found my mind became a tangled Ronspeak mess :(

  • Bassano Clapper07/09/2009 at 20:38

    Understanding is irrelevant

"La, La, La. I'm not listening"

    Hi Alison

It was called Defiance it had Daniel Craig in it and was about Belorussian Jews in the 2nd world war.

Did you enjoy it? Assuming enjoy is the correct word.

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 21:50

    Hi Alison

Bassano was worried you had been killed by your curtain pole

  • Alison07/09/2009 at 21:51

Yeah pretty good! It wasn't as upsetting as most holocaust films are. Tbh it was a bit "hollywood" for my taste but it was always going to be with James Bond in it really.....

  • Lukeh07/09/2009 at 21:51

Yeah pretty good! It wasn't as upsetting as most holocaust films are. Tbh it was a bit "hollywood" for my taste but it was always going to be with James Bond in it really.....

The boy in the striped pyjamas is the most upsetting one for me :(

    Utterly brilliant, but gutwrenching stuff

  • Alison07/09/2009 at 21:53

I liked that it was mainly a true story though. That these brothers did actually manage to build camps in the forrest and survive 4 freezing winters with over 1200 people. It's a miracle.

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 21:55

Is it an old film? I have seen soething on that a few years ago. What they did was incredible. I can't remember if it was a film or a documentary I saw

Is it an old film? I have seen soething on that a few years ago. What they did was incredible. I can't remember if it was a film or a documentary I saw

The true story is better than the film. What they went through, it's truly incredible. The only bit I didn't like was at the end it explained what had happened to the brothers and the youngest one went and joined the Russian army which annoyed me....

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 22:01

hmm. if you're doing a graph, how do you get it into your blog?

I did the old printscreen / Paint / save as PNG and then insert. came out blurry

  • lou07/09/2009 at 22:01

The boy in the striped pyjamas is the most upsetting one for me :(

that's such a sad film. we watched it in history last year and before we could leave the lesson the teacher had to make sure we were all okay as we were all kinda crying..

  • Nick07/09/2009 at 22:02

hmm. if you're doing a graph, how do you get it into your blog?

Gavin is probably the guy to ask.

PNG has done funny things for me in the past, Jpeg?

  • Steven Roy07/09/2009 at 22:02

Is it an old film? I have seen soething on that a few years ago. What they did was incredible. I can't remember if it was a film or a documentary I saw

that's such a sad film. we watched it in history last year and before we could leave the lesson the teacher had to make sure we were all okay as we were all kinda crying..

We watched Schindler's List over a period of several lessons (took a couple of weeks). I was glad, not sure I could have handled it in one go at that point.

  • Lukeh07/09/2009 at 22:03

that's such a sad film. we watched it in history last year and before we could leave the lesson the teacher had to make sure we were all okay as we were all kinda crying..

Nothing wrong with that Lukeh, at least it wasn't a Smiley Virus movie

PNG has done funny things for me in the past, Jpeg?

JPG does the same. Must be the way I'm doing it.

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 22:06

  • Pat W07/09/2009 at 22:14

You'd be best waiting for Gavin then, unless you fancy trawling Excel forums tonight

    Gavin knows all.

    Ouch, that's not pleasant

If you have to get them removed any time soon. Get them to dope you up, it's not pleasant

  • Alison07/09/2009 at 22:15

Why would I need them removed? They're just sore as they're coming through.

Sometimes they have to come out

Depends how they emerge, mine were impacting against their neighbours

*jumps up and down in the way a 2 year old might* why wont anyone reply to any emails, letters or anything!!! it's not hard! :(

  • Lukeh07/09/2009 at 22:18

    What's that one about?

Two children who become close friends but one is a german child, the other a jewish child in a concentration camp. The german child doesn;t realise the sinister environment his friend is living in, and the story runs around this idea of innocence prevailing over the deep conflict of hatred between the two sides. It's a remarkable film.

Why would I need them removed? They're just sore as they're coming through.

I had the first three come through no problem apart from the occasional bit of pain but the bottom right one was agony. I always hated dentists and put off going to see one until I couldn't stand the pain any more. The wisdom tooth was grinding against the tooth in front of it. The destist said my mouth wasn't big enough. First time for everything I suppose.

So he decided the best plan was to remove the tooth in front of the one it was grinding against as apparently it didn't look great. It sure put up a great fight for an ugly tooth when he pulled it. He told me that as the wisdom tooth pushed through the gap would disappear. Looking at the rate it is closing I reckon there will be no gap if I lie to be 564 years old.

The important thing though is litereally the second the tooth was pulled the pain stopped and never returned.

Are you trying to deal with British Gas?

no... it's been over a month since i wrote to Jules... a few weeks since i emailed Darren Heath... (although i know they are really busy) and then there are the emails i sent to my deputy head 2 months ago at school with in depth room plans (drawn for hours in paint and photoshop!) and other various emails.... an no one has bothered to reply to anything! grrr.. it's not difficult... i even found out the deputy head has been arranging it with the head girl and stuff without even talking to me... which is annoying since she made me write a 1,000 word proposal and do the diagrams... all i ask is for a reply. grrrr

Write to them all again and ask if they have any thoughts on your previous correspondence and include a copy of what you sent the last time since you know they are very busy and receive lots of correspondence.

  • Alianora La Canta07/09/2009 at 22:35

    So a collision into the first corner then? :D {Comment #233}

This is Monza. If there isn't a collision of some sort at the first corner or the second chicane, everyone would wonder what was wrong (unless it happens to be raining at the start of the race, which is unlikely)...

  • lou07/09/2009 at 22:35

You are allowed to be grumpy. Just remember that this time next year you will be missing school

i love my school i really do. it may put loads of pressure on me, and give me loads of work, but the community is great, the teachers are mostly amazing (specially my new history teacher :D) and it's all good, i wouldn't have stayed for 14... nearly 15 years if i didn't like it :D i'll miss it so much next year... i just hate the 'go back to school and get ill' thing get most years

  • lou07/09/2009 at 22:36

however....i dont need to listen to it....i was there ;)

i suppose that's a good excuse... even if you did miss zane's amazing mixing skills :P

    I’m just trying to find a way to link to an old comment like Alia does – I think it would be useful to do sometimes… {Comment #309}

    Lots of copying-and-pasting of stuff - quote { linktag copy-hyperlink-to-comment Comment #copy-and-paste-comment-number close linktag }

  • me07/09/2009 at 22:49

    Lots of copying-and-pasting of stuff - quote { linktag copy-hyperlink-to-comment Comment #copy-and-paste-comment-number close linktag }

how do you have the time?

  • Nick07/09/2009 at 22:50

    Lots of copying-and-pasting of stuff - quote { linktag copy-hyperlink-to-comment Comment #copy-and-paste-comment-number close linktag }

Wouldnt click-to-quote be a million times easier? It seems like a lot of effort for the same result?

  • Alianora La Canta07/09/2009 at 22:54

    really? i kinda wish alia would just click to quote like everybody else. {Comment #310}

You can't do that in ye olde commenting, and I find it a lot easier to use that than the other methods most of the time (LCLT is fine for live commenting on given sessions but I tend to get confused with the whole threading thing the rest of the time and I find Doohickey generally difficult to use). Also, unlike the other two methods, it's guaranteed to load up even on Dad's computer every single time of asking unless Mediatemple's being awkward.

It's also a habit I'm stuck in anyway because, having come from a forum background, I'm used to nobody being able to follow a conversational thread unless everything is cited in some way. You may be better at following a conversation through an entry than many of them are, but my brain doesn't adjust much between forum posting and blog commenting.

  • Alianora La Canta07/09/2009 at 22:56

    how do you have the time? {Comment #1070}

Easy. I copy the comment and remember the comment number when I first see the comment I want to quote, then stick curly brackets and link tags round the number and use Find to get back to the comment to quote the number. It adds perhaps 10-15 seconds to my comment time, depending on how tired I am.

  • me07/09/2009 at 23:00

i still find it a bit crazy, and gavin's solution went to far, but if you're happy doing it, pls carry on.

when we update ye olde comments, we're going to have to get you to test them like crazy to make sure all your machines work with them.
