Free Practice gets underway today, so we will finally get back to the racing action. It's been a good couple of weeks, so it'll be nice to see those cars going round and round again. Meanwhile, here's what we've been talking about:

  • Turn 9 has had some safety upgrades following Kovi's massive accident there last year. Apparently a bit of an incline has been added at the back of the gravel trap, new gravel, plus some improvements to the tyre barrier itself. Heikki himself says he isn't worried about returning to the track at all.
  • Mario Theissen is just as concerned about the two-tier championship as the rest of us, and has even hinted that presenting it to the board - who are already unhappy about the lack of results - will not encourage them to continue in the sport.
  • Finally, Ferrari have decided to keep KERS on board for Barcelona, despite all the problems they've faced so far with it. Massa must have got his way, as he was adamant that without the technology they had nothing to give, and that pretty much seemed to be the case.

That'll do it for now. There'll be multiple threads along later to get the action going throughout the day. Don't forget to update your Fantasy Racers team (a reminder will be along shortly, so save your strategy stories for then!), and I'll see you in the comments.

JA'a article regarding the Alonso-Hamilton presscon is VERY interesting, as are the replies to it.

    Article here.

James was accused of misquoting Alonso to suit his needs, something that James has strongly denied. His explanation is at the bottom of the page as a comment.

I'll take James' side on this one - whether on purpose or not, Alonso did send across a message that Lewis' reputation has been damaged, and Lewis was affected by it. James may be a bad commentator, but he was never a bad journalist.

  • Alex Andronov08/05/2009 at 04:52

I agree. Having read James comment it sounds about right.

Somebody suggests that perhaps Lewis was surprised by Lewis being nice to him. That actually doesn't ring true. Most of these guys are nice to each other during the conferences and Alonso and Lewis have always been very careful (especially in Spain) to do that. So it was the change in tone that Lewis was presumably reacting to.

  • Amy08/05/2009 at 05:00

its funny how having commas in different places to the official transcript makes jamess version read so differently. I didnt interpret it as a "knife twist" at all, but then again i wasnt in the room and didnt see lewis's reaction.

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 05:52

its funny how having commas in different places to the official transcript makes jamess version read so differently.

not to mention the presence (or lack thereof) of the word 'now'.

I didnt interpret it as a “knife twist” at all, but then again i wasnt in the room and didnt see lewis’s reaction.

it's fernando being fernando. he may not have meant to twist the knife, so to speak, but his statement had that effect.

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 06:13

Isn't it ironic that Max introduced the budget cap partly as a way to help keep manufacturers in the sport. He thought that they'd stay in the sport because it would cost them less.

Of course, manufacturers weren't concerned about the costs so much as they were about winning. Now Ferrari, BMW, and maybe Renault all want out of the two-tier regs.

    Oops.

  • Alex Andronov08/05/2009 at 06:21

Yeah... absolutely agree. I think what he said brought it home to Lewis.. But I'm not sure he said it thinking that.

I think Fernando was just being his honest self and made the point that the press will soon forget about liegate if Lewis keeps churning out good performances.

But whenever Lewis' and Fernando's names are mentioned together everyone thinks they are trying to get the better of the other when they actually have no problem with each other.

In comparison, he doesn't hold McLaren in the same light:

Q: On the 29th of April McLaren will appear in front of the WMSC for having lied. What’s your take on that ?

Alonso: ”I left that team because my philosophy isn’t the same as theirs. In the last three years they’ve spent more time in Paris than at the trackside.”

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 07:00

But whenever Lewis’ and Fernando’s names are mentioned together everyone thinks they are trying to get the better of the other when they actually have no problem with each other.

Hungary 2007 showed that they DO have a problem with each other. Alonso got mad at Hamilton for not following the team's orders to let him through.

It may not be anywhere near the scale as his anger at McLaren but it doesn't mean that it's not there.

That said... is this what would've happened had Michael Schumacher gone to McLaren instead of Ferrari in 1996.

  • F1Wolf08/05/2009 at 07:06

I am a bit confused with Alonso's talk. He tries to make it look like it was his decision to leave. But as I remember it was the team that let him go

  • Jon Waldock08/05/2009 at 07:07

I am a bit confused with Alonso's talk. He tries to make it look like it was his decision to leave. But as I remember it was the team that let him go

    wasnt it a mutual thing?

  • toxicfusion08/05/2009 at 07:11

Hungary 2007 showed that they DO have a problem with each other. Alonso got mad at Hamilton for not following the team’s orders to let him through.

Lewis is as much to blame for the events as Fernando. I was watching what he told the press afterward and at that point I lost any respect for him, after claiming that he followed team orders he didn't see why he should move over. Essentially showing that he would only follow team orders when it benifited him.

If Hungary 2007 had gone down differently, one of the two would have been WDC and we would have seen how much they enjoyed the competition there was between them. We didn't see that because of Hungary 07 which lead to Alonso's belief that the team were backing Hamilton over him.

It may not be anywhere near the scale as his anger at McLaren but it doesn’t mean that it’s not there.

Fernando and Lewis will never be buddies but at the same time the hatred that was protrayed as being between them by the media isn't there.

  • F1Wolf08/05/2009 at 07:11

I am a bit confused with Alonso’s talk. He tries to make it look like it was his decision to leave. But as I remember it was the team that let him go

He still had a contract with McLaren at least for the following season, so he could have stayed with the team. In the end decided to leave and the contract was terminated by mutual agreement. After all McLaren couldn't afford to repeeat 2007 in 2008.

  • F1Wolf08/05/2009 at 07:15

    "wasnt it a mutual thing?"

of course that is how it was presented. but if I remember the stories from those days, Alonso came after the 2007 season to talk with McLaren about his future only to learn there is no future for him there. the team paid him off and asked him to keep quiet about the events in the team. of course this may be only one of many versions of the whole story

Fernando and Lewis will never be buddies but at the same time the hatred that was protrayed as being between them by the media isn’t there.

As I've said, Hungary 2007 belies that. And if there really wasn't any hatred between the two of them, they wouldn't have needed to have a one-on-one "clear the air" discussion the weekend after in Monza.

we would have seen how much they enjoyed the competition there was between them.

but we didn't even see any sign of that from canada to hungary. i remember alonso angrily asking the team in indy to order lewis to let him through. i wouldn't call that 'enjoying the competition'.

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 07:32

of course this may be only one of many versions of the whole story

i remember that version too. :) but in the end, it's better for both team and driver to say that it was a 'mutual decision', even if that wasn't necessarily the case.

    what an innocent look

    Who? Me? Worry? :D

  • Jon Waldock08/05/2009 at 07:32

I dont think all of fernando's hatred was towards lewis, he was angry at the team for not making him a clear number 1

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 07:33

I dont think all of fernando’s hatred was towards lewis, he was angry at the team for not making him a clear number 1

for sure he was angrier at the team than he was at lewis. but i'm sure he was at least somewhat angry at lewis.

I heart Vettel more and more each passing day. Though not as much as I do Webber as there's only so much man-love to go around.

Anyway, just discovered a gem of a quote following his first win in Italy last year. A journalist said to him, "This must be the best day of your life?"

Vettel's reply? "You obviously weren't there when I lost my virginity."

    :-D

Nico has been talking about the weight loss stuff with Formula 1 drivers and you can't help but agree with what he says. iT's been said plenty of times on here I know but it's just scary seeing how thin some drivers are compared to the previous seasons and we had that event with Alonso (did we have more? Nico says there that 'drivers were unconscious' suggesting more...).

  • Jon Waldock08/05/2009 at 10:46

I personally don;t think they should be so harsh with the weight of the cars and the weight of the drivers but we'll see...

the problem is, make the cars too light and the drivers have to loose weight, make them too heavy and the inertia from the crashes is huge

  • Lukeh08/05/2009 at 10:48

the problem is, make the cars too light and the drivers have to loose weight, make them too heavy and the inertia from the crashes is huge

Ah.. pretty much a balancing act then of the weight of the car and the weight of the driver? A lot of the technical regulations go way over my head, as much as I try to read up on them to get more understanding.

Just “leaderboard”. Or “giant leaderboard” if a journalist is desperate for additional verbiage…

Thought as much. Thanks. Only needed to know for curiosities sake as a friend of mine is out in Spain and a picture she has sent me has the leaderboard in a rather awkward place!

  • Alianora La Canta08/05/2009 at 11:04

    Ah.. pretty much a balancing act then of the weight of the car and the weight of the driver? {Comment #52}

If they made the driver/seat combination a mimimum weight as well as having a minimum weight for the car, it would solve the problem relatively simply.

  • Alex Andronov08/05/2009 at 11:04

Interestingly Alonso disagreed that it was the reason saying that the weight loss has made him feel healthier after the previous races. And said this was because of the drinks bottle and the fact his back got burned.

  • Flibster08/05/2009 at 11:06

If they made the driver/seat combination a mimimum weight as well as having a minimum weight for the car, it would solve the problem relatively simply.

They'd still want a light driver - and then fill the bottom of the seat with weight.

...or have J-Lo and her 'ghetto bootie' driving the car. When I was at uni it was just called having a fat arse...

  • Amy08/05/2009 at 11:07

Interestingly Alonso disagreed that it was the reason saying that the weight loss has made him feel healthier after the previous races. And said this was because of the drinks bottle and the fact his back got burned.

It was also reported that Kovy has gained weight, which seems at odds to the rest of the grid, makes me wonder if dropping 5 kilos really is worth it if he can gain 5.

  • Alianora La Canta08/05/2009 at 11:09

    a picture she has sent me has the leaderboard in a rather awkward place! {Comment #55}

    Where would this be?

  • Steven Roy08/05/2009 at 11:14

It was also reported that Kovy has gained weight, which seems at odds to the rest of the grid, makes me wonder if dropping 5 kilos really is worth it if he can gain 5.

If the gain in weight gives him better stamina and better lap times toward the end of the race then it can offset the weight gain.

Regardless how the regulations are written a smaller, lighter driver is always a benefit over a taller, heavier one.

  • Alianora La Canta08/05/2009 at 11:20

    They’d still want a light driver - and then fill the bottom of the seat with weight. {Comment #58}

They might do, but that's more or less the situation that existed before KERS. There's a limit as to how much benefit can be gained from putting extra ballast in the seat.

  • Dank08/05/2009 at 11:36

    Where would this be?

The picture or the leaderboard? She's in Barcelona as I type this. The leaderboard appears to be protruding for an orifice...

  • Amy08/05/2009 at 14:29

the name was given to me in 1998 when I first signed up for yahoo by a friend who thought the cartoon character was bitter and cranky much like myself :D

and we were 12, and couldn't spell squirrel ;)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)08/05/2009 at 14:29

    christine's on.

It took her an hour to perfect it? That's 55 minutes more work than it took to make my song ;)

And it shows by the way - my song is so rubbish in comparison! :D

  • me08/05/2009 at 14:30

And it shows by the way - my song is so rubbish in comparison! :D

i heard it 100 times already, but it sounds so much better on the radio.

  • Christine08/05/2009 at 14:30

It took her an hour to perfect it? That's 55 minutes more work than it took to make my song ;)

From start to finish it probably took an hour, but not all at once.

  • me08/05/2009 at 14:31

you guys have no idea how many years i tried to get a song played on british radio.

...and christine does it by accident

Honestly Christine - I can't believe how good your song is and you made it ONE HOUR! I thought it would have taken ages to do it that well!

  • Amy08/05/2009 at 14:32

Honestly Christine - I can't believe how good your song is and you made it ONE HOUR! I thought it would have taken ages to do it that well!

I agree, it took me about a day to write 4 lines of my Heikki song.

Christine, you sound so confident for your first radio appearance :)

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 14:56

What shall I do about Kubica? It feels like I’m stuck with an awful present that I can’t get rid of!

He may actually be worth the risk this weekend. It depends if you believe his FP1 or FP2 pace more. We shall see...

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 14:57

Christine, you sound so confident for your first radio appearance :)

I remember the time she created her very first podcast... :)

    my life sucks :(

  • Amy08/05/2009 at 15:02

I just googled it because I actually hadn't before, it really is everywhere. I like that one of the first results says "Some people have far too much time on their hands."

Time on their hands? Sidepodcast? That's laughable.

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 15:02

i may have to play it to her again, just to keep her feet on the ground ;)

Play it for all of us! Better yet, make it a post. :D Would love to hear the before and after. :)

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 15:03

    my life sucks :(

Oh, don't say that. You know Sidepodcast wouldn't exist without your mad skillz. :D

  • me08/05/2009 at 15:03

I just googled it because I actually hadn't before, it really is everywhere.

the drop.io page has had in excess of 10,000 views.

Not sure if anyone's mentioned this:

Winner will not take all in F1 championship

And just as well, too. :)

  • Amy08/05/2009 at 15:04

the drop.io page has had in excess of 10,000 views.

plus a lot of the newer discoveries of it are linking to the youtube video version and bypassing you completely. It just turned up on the Team McLaren forum yesterday.

  • me08/05/2009 at 15:05

Winner will not take all in F1 championship

ahh cool. so it was a typo? bodes well for the rest of the regulations.

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 15:05

plus a lot of the newer discoveries of it are linking to the youtube video version and bypassing you completely. It just turned up on the Team McLaren forum yesterday.

All we need to happen now is for us to get mentioned on national BBC. :D

What did the Team McLaren folks say? :)

  • Lukeh08/05/2009 at 15:05

Not sure if anyone's mentioned this:

    ?!

I haven't seen this reported at all!! :o

  • me08/05/2009 at 15:06

plus a lot of the newer discoveries of it are linking to the youtube video version and bypassing you completely. It just turned up on the Team McLaren forum yesterday.

true. also, don't have numbers from sidepodcast downloads. that's just what's been heard from the drop.

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 15:06

ahh cool. so it was a typo? bodes well for the rest of the regulations.

More like a versioning error. Someone edited the wrong version, apparently. Good move to strike this one down decisively. :)

  • Amy08/05/2009 at 15:07

What did the Team McLaren folks say? :)

    "What a grin :D:D:D:D"

    "Awesome LMAO"

    "AWESOME haha ! :D:D"

    ":D:D:D"

not quite a roflcopter, but lots of :Ds and a LMAO.

and a capital awesome, the most awesome of all awesomes!

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 15:09

not quite a roflcopter, but lots of :Ds and a LMAO.

Very, very good. :D It's a bit ironic that something Christine did as an aside may become Sidepodcast's breakout moment in the wider F1 community. :)

Sites like SPC and F1F have been on the up lately, getting good numbers. I think this is a good omen for how F1 will organically grow online in future. :)

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 15:10

and a capital awesome, the most awesome of all awesomes!

Except for Five Pints of Awesome, of course. :)

Hoping we get more people to drop by over the weekend after Felipe-Baby-Mania. :)

  • Jon Waldock08/05/2009 at 15:10

I think this is a good omen for how F1 will organically grow online in future. :)

now if Bernie could see that....

  • Lukeh08/05/2009 at 15:10

Except for Five Pints of Awesome, of course. :)

    ah of course :P

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 15:11

now if Bernie could see that....

    Exactly my thoughts. :)

  • Christine08/05/2009 at 15:11

Very, very good. :D It's a bit ironic that something Christine did as an aside may become Sidepodcast's breakout moment in the wider F1 community. :)

    That's what we're worried about!

  • Lukeh08/05/2009 at 15:11

now if Bernie could see that....

He's too busy organically having an artifical lawn for a motorhome based on this weekend

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)08/05/2009 at 15:11

and a capital awesome, the most awesome of all awesomes!

Oi! You'd better not say that seeing as you now drive for Team Five Pints of Awesome!

  • Amy08/05/2009 at 15:12

    That's what we're worried about!

When you get hired by a team to do their PR I want paddock passes please.

  • Jon Waldock08/05/2009 at 15:12

    :D

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 15:12

    That's what we're worried about!

C'mon, that can only be a good thing. :) The more people you attract here, the more people will be addicted to your podcasts and other wonderful content. Not to mention the great Sidepodcommunity... :)

  • Christine08/05/2009 at 15:13

When you get hired by a team to do their PR I want paddock passes please.

You may take my place :)

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 15:13

When you get hired by a team to do their PR I want paddock passes please.

Me too. I'm not greedy - passes for the Asian rounds alone would make me very 'appy. ;)

  • Jon Waldock08/05/2009 at 15:13

C'mon, that can only be a good thing. :) The more people you attract here, the more people will be addicted to your podcasts and other wonderful content. Not to mention the great Sidepodcommunity... :)

Ah but then you get huge bandwidth problems too...

  • Christine08/05/2009 at 15:13

C'mon, that can only be a good thing. :)

Yea, I think we're had this conversation before. We like things as they are, and we're pushing the limits of how big we can get as it is.

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 15:14

Ah but then you get huge bandwidth problems too...

Hopefully, that will get offset by more people deciding to donate more. :)

  • Flibster08/05/2009 at 15:14

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)08/05/2009 at 15:17

Hopefully, that will get offset by more people deciding to donate more. :)

    Never gonna happen.

    I will donate soon but I am a bit cash-strapped ATM :(

  • Amy08/05/2009 at 15:17

Guys and gals, can we prove Christine wrong? :)

I had the Paypal page open last night, then I remembered what my credit card statement looks like at the moment so I diarised it for next month instead :D

  • Christine08/05/2009 at 15:18

Guys and gals, can we prove Christine wrong? :)

We get some donations from wonderful people, but the culture of the internet at the moment is that things are free. It is hard work trying to get people to pay for things, and I speak as a consumer as much as a podcaster.

  • me08/05/2009 at 15:19

We get some donations from wonderful people, but the culture of the internet at the moment is that things are free. It is hard work trying to get people to pay for things, and I speak as a consumer as much as a podcaster.

agreed. hence why i love what joe's doing with gp+

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 15:20

We get some donations from wonderful people, but the culture of the internet at the moment is that things are free. It is hard work trying to get people to pay for things, and I speak as a consumer as much as a podcaster.

That is very much true. But I'd like to think that people will give money to worthy causes such as yours. Not everyone will give, for sure, but even if only 10% of those people donated, it would be a world of good to everyone. :)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)08/05/2009 at 15:21

Can somebody please explain the concept of micro payments?

  • Christine08/05/2009 at 15:21

That is very much true. But I'd like to think that people will give money to worthy causes such as yours.

Unfortunately, I will just have to repeat: never gonna happen.

Unfortunately, I will just have to repeat: never gonna happen.

we could do more to encourage it. but you're right, the culture of the web isn't geared that way.

  • Amy08/05/2009 at 15:23

That is very much true. But I'd like to think that people will give money to worthy causes such as yours.

The trick is to sell them something - I gave money to FR because I wanted more teams. I'm more than willing to donate to sidepodcast because you sell me an end to my boredom :D

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)08/05/2009 at 15:23

  • Christine08/05/2009 at 15:24

we could do more to encourage it. but you're right, the culture of the web isn't geared that way.

We could. But I don't want to spend time bugging people for money. There are much better things to be doing.

In my head, either we charge or we don't.

  • Lukeh08/05/2009 at 15:25

How is the leg? And don't look at the drop,io, theres a picture that might break your heart.

  • me08/05/2009 at 15:25

Can somebody please explain the concept of micro payments?

they way i speak of them. essentially paying very small amounts to people for very specific things. a song on itunes is a micropayment, because in the shop you buy a more expensive single, but get tracks you may not want.

in sidepodcast terms a micropayment might be used to ensure a higher quality live stream for example. £1 a week could guarantee you zero buffering and a larger picture. i'm not saying that's what we'd do, but it's an example of paying small quantity for a niche item.

  • me08/05/2009 at 15:26

In my head, either we charge or we don't.

    also true.

  • RG / Mark Webber08/05/2009 at 15:26

Why waste so much money, Mark? Your 6400 Euros could've gone to a worthier cause... Hehe. :)

That said, at least it happened today. There would've been bigger consequences had it happened during quali or race.

    For Mr. C:

    http://allenonf1.wordpress.com/2009/05/08/whos-the-f1-heavyweight/

One of my readers posted a question the other day, could I imagine Juan Pablo Montoya coming back to F1?

Looking at the above table and what is required from drivers today in terms of weight control, I think we all know the answer to that...

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 15:34

Sure he can come back to F1! But he'd need to join a season of "The Biggest Loser" first. :P

It could still be arranged.... (got a summer of friends working on various festival RSL stations who are always wanting interesting and 'no one else has got' stuff... plus at least 3 peeps on my facebook (and others off) with UK based FM shows... and others I could pitch things to...

Assuming that you still want a song/piece broadcast that is...

jazz drives! those were all the rage... for a year or so. the chunky 8-tracks of digital storage. they stored 100MB, right?

    hmm.

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 16:39

    oh. right.

but test driver is different from 3rd driver.

or maybe wurz is a DC-like consultant?

All I can work out is that he is a 'team advisor', whatever that means. Schumacher had the same tag put on him did he not? Noone understood what that role meant either...

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 16:39

    zip was 100mb. must've been a 1gb?

wikipedia says 1GB, which eventually became 2GB for a while before it lost out to CD-Rs and USB drives.

i've not seen anything of Wurz all season so far, not in a photo or anything, it's really unusual. but they have two very experienced drivers, what is Wurz going to advise them on that Rubens and Jenson can't?.... i mean i like that he is still around, but it seems a little strange to me.

Good point there, Lou. And you can't get any more experienced than Rubens. :) Perhaps he covers whatever blind spots the drivers have in terms of feedback?

  • Lukeh08/05/2009 at 16:45

Good point there, Lou. And you can't get any more experienced than Rubens. :) Perhaps he covers whatever blind spots the drivers have in terms of feedback?

Maybe he advises the team on how to celebrate on the podium, going back to his awesome Montreal podium celebration a few years back :P

Although Rubens has his epic dance and Jenson always looks natural with podium celebrating

  • Alianora La Canta08/05/2009 at 16:50

    Unfortunately, I will just have to repeat: never gonna happen. {Comment #195}

Script Frenzy's managed to raise $23,484 in five weeks, through a combination of donations and merchandise. The trick is to find ways of encouraging the donation.

One possibility is to put up a donation meter. Next to each step, you could put what you'll do if you get the money. The Script Frenzy one, for example, starts with such simple, but high-priority things as "Servers will be able to handle robust traffic" and end with such pie-in-the-sky stuff as "online videos" and "live events".

You'd probably need to start with fairly modest amounts, but giving something to aim for could attract people into donating and/or buying merchandise.

A lot of the freebie internet culture is because its structure does not lend itself towards its users seeing the costs of what they access. More awareness of costs would help counteract the problem and may even help you sort out your own costs.

    I found it funny getting less than half right meant you were smart enough for university. {Comment #252}

It was even worse when I got in. The pass mark for modules at my university was, for the most part, 40%. The only proviso was that every markable item had to be 40% or more - an average of 40% was insufficient in itself (unless you were very persuasive in the appeals system).

i've not seen anything of Wurz all season so far, not in a photo or anything, it's really unusual. but they have two very experienced drivers, what is Wurz going to advise them on that Rubens and Jenson can't?.... i mean i like that he is still around, but it seems a little strange to me.

found him in Bahrain and Malaysia

still no clues what he is though.

  • Lukeh08/05/2009 at 17:05

I hope someone got him a hotel room because man he looks rough in the bahrain photo...

  • Amy08/05/2009 at 17:06

definitely not looking ready-to-jump-in-the-car-at-any-second a la Romain.

ooo thanks Amy. no brawn shirt though?.. and the mystery continues..

    zip was 100mb. must've been a 1gb?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaz_drive this?

I think that there is indeed one in a box here, certainly an iomega 'something' (unless it went the last time that himself had a chuck out - although with computer things this seems to happen a lot less than other stuff.... b.e.g.)

Failing that, apparently there are several all over theplace in the lofts of HP employees past and present (oh, the geeks are the horders of the earth :-D )

Question is though - do F1 engineers keep bits of outofdate work kit safely in their lofts/sheds/garages as well?

  • Jon Waldock08/05/2009 at 17:21

ooo thanks Amy. no brawn shirt though?.. and the mystery continues..

depends when the photo was taken, if it was before friday they don't generally wear team gear

    good point.

  • Jon Waldock08/05/2009 at 17:22

    good point.

i'm full of them....also full of alot of other stuff :D

  • Lukeh08/05/2009 at 17:29

Talking about Brawn they just sent out an email newsletter about the team including a picture of Rubens, Jenson, Ross and... Nick... standing in front of a terminator advert, and Rubens looks very awkward next to Nick :D

  • Lukeh08/05/2009 at 17:34

Lucky they haven't gone to DC lengths at Monaco by dressing up similar to the film

very quick question, are Duracell now sponsoring Brawn (remember i'm still catching up with the news here :P)

    Duracell kers?

  • lou08/05/2009 at 17:46

ok... tell me i'm not imagining there is a battery on rubens' cap

    http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/duracell-jpg

    :s

  • Lukeh08/05/2009 at 17:47

    Duracell kers?

When Williams were sponsored by Sega, they had Sonic the hedgehog's legs by the cockpit, perhaps if duracell are sponsoring a duracell bunny or battery by the KERS battery? :D

  • Lukeh08/05/2009 at 17:47

ok... tell me i'm not imagining there is a battery on rubens' cap

Unles we're all going mad, that's definitely Duracell we all know of!

  • Jon Waldock08/05/2009 at 17:48

Unles we're all going mad, that's definitely Duracell we all know of!

I think the "Duracell" logo gives off the Duracell sponsorship :D

  • littlepurplegoth08/05/2009 at 17:49

Unles we're all going mad, that's definitely Duracell we all know of!

    They've kept that very quiet...

Oh - could it be that the 'deal' is with Rubens rather than with Brawn? Its quite common for people to have specific contracts (although less so in F1 I think, more common in other sports) especially for certain parts of the world over others.

  • Lukeh08/05/2009 at 17:50

Oh - could it be that the 'deal' is with Rubens rather than with Brawn? Its quite common for people to have specific contracts (although less so in F1 I think, more common in other sports) especially for certain parts of the world over others.

I can't say I've ever seen Rubens respectively sponsored by Duracell but I'll definitely double check

  • lou08/05/2009 at 17:51

But like... it's not on the brawn site or anything, where as the other deals have been confirmed on there.

  • Jon Waldock08/05/2009 at 17:52

But like... it's not on the brawn site or anything, where as the other deals have been confirmed on there.

they may do a proper announcement and then put it on then

  • Lukeh08/05/2009 at 17:52

But like... it's not on the brawn site or anything, where as the other deals have been confirmed on there.

Yeah that is very strange. :S

Even more so for it to be properly made into the hat too, so not a rush job deal or anything...

  • Christine08/05/2009 at 17:52

One possibility is to put up a donation meter. Next to each step, you could put what you'll do if you get the money. The Script Frenzy one, for example, starts with such simple, but high-priority things as "Servers will be able to handle robust traffic" and end with such pie-in-the-sky stuff as "online videos" and "live events".

That's not a bad idea at all. Kinda like Blue Peter.

  • lou08/05/2009 at 17:52

could be.. he has sponsor logos from a magazine on his helmet i believe.

  • Lukeh08/05/2009 at 17:53

could be.. he has sponsor logos from a magazine on his helmet i believe.

Ah good thinking, he had that one you showed me in Australia with the red logo. But Duracell really is a worldwide brand name rather than what he had there, you'd imagine they'd be part of a major deal. Hmm.

    Investigation a-go-go!

I'm sure lou or others will be anyways :D but I'll be working so I won't be able to see, and this has actually got me really intruiged...

    Congrats Christine :) awsome!!!!

Just to correct something earlier, which I think proves that I genuinely don't forget anything...

Christine you have been on the radio before. You were interviewed by the BBC and explained podcasting. And then was really embarressed when they played a clip of your first podcast.

Don't worry it's not just you guys I remember things for. I rarely forget anything except names.

The Duracell deal looks like it is Rubens' personal sponsor rather than a team deal. I assume the fact that Brawn are paying him less than he was getting last year is offset by allowing him personal sponsors. He had a magazine sponsor a race or two ago.

  • RG / Mark Webber08/05/2009 at 20:16

So they have Rob on and they want Christine on more. What are the odds of them being on together? If they are what are the odds on Christine being able to speak to him?

I doubt it, Christine may have fainted by that stage.

  • Scott Woodwiss08/05/2009 at 20:16

So they have Rob on and they want Christine on more. What are the odds of them being on together? If they are what are the odds on Christine being able to speak to him?

I think just being in the same building as Rob will make her faint and explode just as Mr C has just done. :D

  • me08/05/2009 at 20:17

I doubt it, Christine may have fainted by that stage.

i don't know about her, but i would.

  • Steven Roy08/05/2009 at 20:18

What odds can I get on Franck being the next Ferrari driver after Radio Tees F1 guru expounds her wisdom

  • Christine08/05/2009 at 20:18

I doubt it, Christine may have fainted by that stage.

    Or exploded!

  • Scott Woodwiss08/05/2009 at 20:18

    i don't about her, but i would.

Wait, so Christine's the one who likes him more, yet it would be you that goes all funny if you met him in person? :D

  • RG / Mark Webber08/05/2009 at 20:19

*is confused* something tells me i've missed more than i thought i had this week... Jackie has a Cockatoo?

your more confused as to the fact that she may have a cockatoo instead of the fact that its dancing!?

i'm confused by the whole situation tbh. why does it dance and why is it on the tv?

  • Steven Roy08/05/2009 at 20:23

*is confused* something tells me i've missed more than i thought i had this week... Jackie has a Cockatoo?

She posted a youtube link of a dancing cockatoo that disco dances. Apparently someone at Harvard got a Ph D for proving cockatoos have a sense of rhythm where most higher mammals like cats don't

  • Scott Woodwiss08/05/2009 at 20:23

You should be able to turn left some time Saturday and come up in the Barcelona paddock in time for quali then

  • me08/05/2009 at 20:32

ok, anything we should be talking to joe about this evening?

it'll probably be a late one, but any questions, thoughts etc please yell.

    Timo Glock... ;)

Really, Toyota almost could of won in Bahrain, was that there best chance and if they don't win this season, could they pull out of F1?

  • lou08/05/2009 at 20:34

get not fet. Must put a light on

  • Scott Woodwiss08/05/2009 at 20:35

Has he heard Felipe Baby, and if so what does he think of it?

But on a serious note, does he think Mike Gascoygne has unfinished business in F1 and if he were to come back, which team does he think would suit his style of work best?

  • me08/05/2009 at 20:35

any other specific info you're after on that front? am gonna read the post in a mo.

cool, and also noted r.g's question.

also noting who's asking this week!

  • Scott Woodwiss08/05/2009 at 20:36

They have announced a designer but I am curious about progress on plant, staff, sponsorship etc. What do they think of the budget cap figure? Does it fit with their budget or does it give them scope to do more?

  • lou08/05/2009 at 20:38

ok, anything we should be talking to joe about this evening?

erm.. you could ask him about Wurz?... not sure if he is likely to know much more about it though.

  • Scott Woodwiss08/05/2009 at 20:39

Oh and seeing as I have F1 Racing on my mind, I noticed that in the YATQ interview, Nico Rosberg supports the idea of taking away the aerodynamics and make it more "less aero, big power".

  • me08/05/2009 at 20:39

erm.. you could ask him about Wurz?... not sure if he is likely to know much more about it though.

    sure.

  • Lukeh08/05/2009 at 20:39

it'll probably be a late one, but any questions, thoughts etc please yell.

Does he think there is any coincedence with veterans of the sport ie. button, barrichello etc doing so well in these new cars and regulations whereas some of the younger guys are still struggling, or is it just car performance from the people like brawn and toyota being more of a factor...

I just say this because just seems so far that the guys with more experience seemed to be racking in points but people like bourdais, piquet, and other relative newcomers to the sports may perhaps be struggling with the cars in race conditions and whatnot.

  • me08/05/2009 at 20:40

    good call.

  • Steven Roy08/05/2009 at 20:41

It would be worth asking him his views on new teams coming in. How many are real bids and who he thinks are most likely to eventually make it to F1.

  • me08/05/2009 at 20:42

It would be worth asking him his views on new teams coming in. How many are real bids and who he thinks are most likely to eventually make it to F1.

ahh yes. ties in nicely gpe.

  • Dom08/05/2009 at 20:42

Does he think we'll see any teams make a big step forward with their aero updates, and if so, which team is likely to make the biggest improvement?

  • Jackie08/05/2009 at 20:43

Are FOTA behind Ferrari on the 40M budget cap or are they in favour of it

  • Scott Woodwiss08/05/2009 at 20:43

What would be a suitable alternative to those who haven't made F1 and missed out on GP2/F2/WSR drives, and how does he think the likes of Bruno Senna will fair getting back up to speed in an F1 car after driving at Le Mans?

  • Jackie08/05/2009 at 20:44

Are the teams agreed that Brawn GP will get Honda's money or will it go to Bernie

  • me08/05/2009 at 20:44

jackie's and dom's noted. anymore on fota, cause that might be an interesting subject?

  • Lukeh08/05/2009 at 20:44

It's like Question Time tonight :D

  • Scott Woodwiss08/05/2009 at 20:45

Does he think £40m is a suitable figure for the budget cap and if not, what would he have set it at if it were up to him?

Not sure if I asked something similar the last time you spoke to him.

  • me08/05/2009 at 20:46

No problem. I'm not expecting all my questions to be read out, I'm just throwing them in there as suggestions :)

Some more technical content. Perhaps a feature in each issue on a key player in F1 for example,Charlie Whiting. What exactly does he do over a race weekend. I'd lalso ove to hear an insight into a stewards meeting.

Which one has scored more points this season as well?

  • Flibster08/05/2009 at 21:15

Given the amount of love that has appear for Massa recently, I'm surprised that most people can remember.

  • Flibster08/05/2009 at 21:15

Which one has scored points this season as well?

    Corrected. ;)

  • me08/05/2009 at 21:16

Given the amount of love that has appear for Massa recently, I'm surprised that most people can remember.

he's a fast driver in a fast car.

he doesn't appear to be a very good team player though.

  • Bassano Clapper08/05/2009 at 21:31

Given the amount of love that has appear for Massa recently, I'm surprised that most people can remember.

I still have heaps more respect for Kimi's driving ability than Massa's

If you need a babysitter on call for every corner then the raw talent (of a champion) just isn't there, the performance is just eked out, conversation by conversation

Not to condone Kimi's lackadaisical attitude, just my two penneth worth

  • Flibster08/05/2009 at 21:34

he's a fast driver in a fast car.

he doesn't appear to be a very good team player though.

He's exactly the same as he was at McLaren. Which is why I like him even though he's gone to Ferrari

  • Bassano Clapper08/05/2009 at 21:36

He's exactly the same as he was at McLaren. Which is why I like him even though he's gone to Ferrari

    Yeah, me too

Thought Ferrari would try to turn him into a team player but it's still the same ol' Kimi

  • chablis08/05/2009 at 21:37

Kimi was let down by McLaren..........he is now being let down by Ferrari...nuff said...the guy can drive regardless.......

  • Bassano Clapper08/05/2009 at 21:38

    BTW

Star Trek + IMAX = the proverbial Five Pints

  • chablis08/05/2009 at 21:39

kimi's attitude and approach have been consistent at Sauber, McLaren and Ferrari...the Teams knew what they were signing imo.......a fast driver !

  • me08/05/2009 at 21:41

understand and agree with all of the above. however, right now ferrari have no use for a quick driver with communication issues.

  • Bassano Clapper08/05/2009 at 21:41

He's exactly the same as he was at McLaren.

Now if only he was interested enough to develop a fast car over the season's length, he'd be deadly

  • me08/05/2009 at 21:42

yep. also highlights an issue with doohickey during race weekends. because it needs to default to a live thread for ease of commenting. but how the heck do you re-default it to daily once a session is through?

  • Bassano Clapper08/05/2009 at 21:45

understand and agree with all of the above. however, right now ferrari have no use for a quick driver with communication issues.

Can't argue with that but I'd agree with Gavin that the Scuderia is going a bit Tower of Pisa these days

  • Bassano Clapper08/05/2009 at 21:46

but how the heck do you re-default it to daily once a session is through?

This may seem like a silly question but does it have to become a separate thread? Is a sub-thread of the Daily an option?

  • Flibster08/05/2009 at 21:47

The problem Raikkonen has is the car just doesn't suit him.

They seem to have been favoring Massa since..well late 2007. The car has been developed away from the style that Schumacher and Raikkonen like them and towards Massa

    From oversteer to understeer.

  • me08/05/2009 at 21:47

This may seem like a silly question but does it have to become a separate thread? Is a sub-thread of the Daily an option?

Recalling our pub conversation? There's too many Italians in that team, and Italians are the world champions of in-fighting and backstabbing.

And before you get annoyed at that, I said that to Bass after spending a week with the Italian part of my family, so I should know ;)

  • me08/05/2009 at 21:48

  • Flibster08/05/2009 at 21:50

    but it never does?

Early 2007 did - then they started developing it away from him.

McLaren liked developing cars like that. This years is a little too twitchy though. ;)

I do think that Hamilton and Raikkonen would be great in the same team.

I do think that Hamilton and Raikkonen would be great in the same team.

I would love to see them in the same team in a car that suited them

May be possible in a world post-Ron

  • Flibster08/05/2009 at 23:06

Question for Joe if you find him - it came to me after looking at some photos from today.

Which is the ugliest design *not colourscheme - Renault wins that one* of the current F1 cars?

I still can't look at the BMW without thinking that it's a car that only it's designers could love...

    From JA's latest entry:

I understand that two teams, Lola and USGPE have paid deposits on a supply of Cosworth engines, so they appear to be serious about coming in.

  • Scott Woodwiss08/05/2009 at 23:07

I understand that two teams, Lola and USGPE have paid deposits on a supply of Cosworth engines, so they appear to be serious about coming in.

    Oooooh.

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 23:09

    Oooooh.

I'm rather surprised with this, actually, especially USGPE, who have zero experience of building a car. Lola have done this before, they just need to better their 1997 debut, which shouldn't be hard.

  • Flibster08/05/2009 at 23:09

I understand that two teams, Lola and USGPE have paid deposits on a supply of Cosworth engines, so they appear to be serious about coming in.

Whose most likely for the last slot then?

Dave Richards/Prodrive/Aston Martin/Gulf for me. Although the deal with McLaren may not work as Force India may not be happy.

I'd agree with you there, Flibster. Maybe not with McLaren, but how about... BMW?

2 shots from a paintball gun in 10 seconds - quite a wait though. :( The noises he makes when he gets shot is worth it. ;)

Other half works for a bank *in compliance - making sure bankers don't do anything wrong* so she's waiting in line to shoot at the moment. :D

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 23:16

I saw the Eric Warren recruitment by USGPE. I wonder how NASCAR will feel about some of their big players moving to F1? They've been used to talent coming their way, so will they say anything about talent moving away?

  • Flibster08/05/2009 at 23:17

Oh yes - forgot to add - the gun aims low and left - aim just over his right shoulder ;)

  • Steven Roy08/05/2009 at 23:20

Completely off topic - but this is great. :D

I get control in 31 minutes

  • Flibster08/05/2009 at 23:23

I get control in 31 minutes

Remember - aim high and right. ;)

  • Andy Taylor08/05/2009 at 23:24

Remember - aim high and right. ;)

I don't want to wait 35 minutes though. Bah.

  • Steven Roy08/05/2009 at 23:25

I don't want to wait 35 minutes though. Bah.

They have very quick minutes. There are 105 people in front of me

I wonder how drunk they were when they decided they were going to do this

  • Flibster08/05/2009 at 23:35

Probably very drunk - and I thank them for it! :D

If you go to the highlights - one of the guys got hit in the face... Ouch...

  • Steven Roy08/05/2009 at 23:39

If you go to the highlights - one of the guys got hit in the face... Ouch...

I have noticed this guy bending quite low over the desk and I thought he could be shot in the head.

  • Flibster08/05/2009 at 23:41

    Right in the gut... :D

  • Journeyer08/05/2009 at 23:49

There ya go! People coming out of the woodwork. ;)

  • Steven Roy08/05/2009 at 23:56

hi all. the conversation with joe finally happened after much technical problems on the side of the spanish.

many questions from the comments were duly put to joe and also jackie's suggestion for an e-reporter style competition for junior f1 journalists was very well received.

more on that shortly, but we're quite excited ;)

  • Bassano Clapper09/05/2009 at 00:03

Not talking to the rest of us

Am thinking of how I can make Doohickey type suggestions/improvements but thinking it's not really the place ;)

  • Journeyer09/05/2009 at 00:04

2am is easier than 5am but the dedication is most welcome either way

We'll always wait for SPC, it's always worth it

    [and how sidepodtime was discovered]

  • Journeyer09/05/2009 at 00:12

    Well I'm NOT.

  • Steven Roy09/05/2009 at 00:19

    How's that Amy's fault? ;)

Because she is on here 24 hours a day confusing people about what time zone they are in

  • me09/05/2009 at 00:19

    Joe liked the suggestion?

you'll have to listen to the show. but... yes.

    Joe liked the suggestion?

Oh, yeah! Yep, he loved it, from the looks of it. :)

  • Bassano Clapper09/05/2009 at 00:21

Because she is on here 24 hours a day confusing people about what time zone they are in

Amy doesn't have a time zone, she's just meditating when Heikki's not thinking about a racing line

  • Jackie09/05/2009 at 00:21

Amy doesn't have a time zone, she's just meditating when Heikki's not thinking about a racing line
