With seven races under our belts, it's looking more and more like the championships will be sealed early. However, the points margin is still attainable and it's just a matter of another team mounting the charge and getting the job done. Is anyone capable? Meanwhile, here's what we're talking about:
- It's a blog post roundup today, as RG has written a post dedicated to his favourite team BMW. They've been struggling so far and finally managed to give Kubica some points in Turkey. RG reviews their progress and ponders what's in store for the team.
- Scott has started a series of posts taking a look at some of the recent E3 announcements - particular games that involve cars and racing. I am particularly bad at these games, and not that bothered about what is coming out, but Scott has a good summation with more to come.
- Dank has written an excellent round-up of Red Bull's afternoon at Istanbul, chronicling just where it went wrong for Vettel, and how Webber made the most of what he'd got.

Right at the end of TWiT Leo played a ringtone someone made of Another one bites the dust with Leo saying Screw you in time with it. Sounds great.
To put it simply: no. I think Jenson will win Silverstone (if only after a tight battle with der Seb), but will have an easy time of it in Nurburgring, Valencia, and Hungary. Rubens may win any one of those latter three, but as long as Jenson finishes on the podium, he'll be fine.
I still think Spa is a bit too early - I think it will be sealed at Monza, but I'm hoping he'll do it at Singapore.
I think if we were going to see the other teams catch up to Brawn, then Turkey was the turning point. TBH Red Bull, Toyota and BMW have made big gains but they are still seemingly miles off the pace of the Brawns...
Agreed. But I'd put Ferrari on that list rather than BMW. BMW still have some ways to go before they can even catch this group. But they seem to have equalled Renault and passed McLaren on pace.
Williams is somewhere in between the chasers and BMW - but the drivers need to be more consistent to translate that pace into points.

hm... other were supposed to catch Brawn in Spain, Red Bull and Ferrari were to be the danger team in Turkey. Yet Brawn (or Button) keeps on winning.
Alonso said, that if they put in his Renault small fuel load, he qualifies higher up but has to pit early and drops way back. If he qualifies with more fuel, he drops back before the race even starts. So it makes no difference, the car is simply not good enough.
Looks like Red Bulls are in similar situation when compared to Brawns - they can outqualify and outpace Brawns but only by compromising their race strategy. At least for now.

Apart from Kimi, they're all in GPDA too and were thus entitled to be at the combined meeting on that basis. Presumably Ferrari decided it was unfair to have Felipe there and not Kimi as well.

Yeah, the race was a total bore like all the races in Turkey. Too bad. All credit to JB. And Webber who I thought would actually win, on Saturday, not after the first coupla laps.
It was really, really, really exciting to see empty grandstands on the main straight and how TV director tried to avoid it. At some point he even showed like this group of fans to make it look great on TV. Now Bernard can oficially run French GP at Paul Ricard without any spectators. No point in writing lengthy comment about it. We all know what's going on. You snooze, you lose your fans to other sports.

i think the battery life is related to the fans turning a 6,000rpm almost permanently. and that's related to making the inside track videos on a laptop!!
I had battery life issues with my iTouch and I solved them by turning the brightness on my screen down. I was told by a Mac rep that all iPod batteru figures were about 2 hours higher than actual figures. The Engineers must do the equivalent of Hypermiling to get the quoted battery life figures...

I've just been reading up for a bit there and looking at 2002 when Schumacher absolutely dominated the season and won by 77 points, Jenson has had a better start to the season than Schumacher did then... Schumi had 5 wins, 2nd and 3rd after 7 races and Jenson obviously has more with 6 wins and a 3rd..
Strewth... not to put off people worrying about single handed domination in the sport but who knows, perhaps a sign of things to come.

I know, clearly he's got people on the grid around him but truth be told i think the majority of us know he hasn't really had to fight this year in comaprison with the last few WDC's, it's all getting a bit 1992 for me. Brilliant drives overshadowed by superior car design. You can't balme him for winning! Doesn't make it instantly epic though. Jenson's main challenge this year for me persoanlly is the stop watch in Q3.......

He has proven himself a worthy champion already in my eyes. Plenty of driver's haven't been able to convert the best car advantage to that many wins regardless of the level of competition.
Vettel and Red Bull screwed up yesterday - he fluffed it on lap 1 and then Red Bull should have changed him to a two-stopper so he wouldn't be in dirty air. That's part of the reason Brawn are winning - yes, the car is fast but the strategy really sealed it for Button!

Quick q. if anyone can help. windows is being annoying with me today (heyyyyyy what's new?) and i have 25GB unallocated space just laying about not in any particular partition, but the memory management stuff won't let me put it back into the C: drive (where it was before I gave windows 7 a go on what was a partition of this unallocated space)
any way to get it abck onto my c: drive? all the system lets me do is create a new volume with the unallocated space... hopefully that makes sense and ive explained it right... if not I can upload a piccy showing what i mean.

good news. mediatemple kindly pointed out that our database is now officially massive, and provided an alternate backup solution that doesn't kill the site every time we try it.
You need partition magic or something along those lines
Once a partition has been created it's not possible to change the partition using any standard windows toys.
I think a switch would have been smart too, but not sure there was much strategy from Brawn apart from driving well. RBR took a gamble which could have worked if the lighter car had have stayed in front of the slower car of Button. Would have been interesting how it played out if Vettel held it in lap one, but he almost lost it in lap two as well.

True, but he has been helped considerbly this year with a poor field of competitors in comparison. We can't honestly say the Ferrari and Mclaren are up to scratch this year and have pushed him. I'd love for RBR to be up the top permanently but i feel 2010 will be almost business as usual with the top teams back. Jenson's obviously driving well to get the wins, for me he needs a classic race to round off his season perfectly, one where he puts in some great overtaking moves against equal cars, oh and the Jenson show to end on the BBC! What was that about bias BBC?!! lol

Heh I was chatting to the guy in Melbourne who arranges all the member meet ups and stuff. Because he goes to all the effort, the McLaren staff know who he is and he got the job one year of taking the Racing Line editor around the stands for a feature on 'how fans see the race'. They got friendly, and after that he won almost every month. That editor has left since though, now he doesn't win so much :D

My current problem: Streaming videos.
I can stream youtube and lots of other things but not the videos on BBC. Are they different format/code/put appropriate word here?

Try the BBC news videos, if they run you are fine, but most of the F1 content is region locked, you might find thats the problem

Is Sebastian Vettel overrated? He is a really nice guy, and appears to be able to put quick laps in, but he has struggled to overtake at Bahrain, Barcelona, and most notably Turkey where others could. Is he being hyped up to try and stop the post-Schumacher decline in Germany?

I'm not sure on the overtaking thing. I think the Red Bull isn't an easy car to follow another car in. And if you think about Mark's overtake of Alonso he wasn't in Alonso's dirty air because Alonso had just overtaken him with his KERS car.
I'm never dogmatic about these things and love the other opinions :)

Three thoughts:
1) If you to fast enough you shouldn't need to overtake
2) Only KERS off the line has overtaken a brawn at all (actually not even sure about that) I'd bet Ross has a few other tricks up his diffuser.
3) It's probably not the same team. From memory Newey was working on something at the front of the car which meant that the double diffuser did go to another team (this was in his interview on the forum).

But Nick despite all this while I really rate and like Vettel I do wonder why in a car with a less than stellar team mate who is recovering from a major injury Vettel isn't totally dominating him.
He is in quali, which is surprising given Webber's supposed dominance there. But why not in the race? It's a worry. I still rate him, but like always I have doubts.

Still he's young, and it more a criticism of the media more than him, but he is hardly as impressive as Hamilton was when he was put along side Fernando in his first season

The Red Bull driver line-up reminds me of the PJ O'Rourke maxim about age and guile beating youth, innocence and a bad haircut. Mark Webber is the most determined and competitive person I've ever met – when he aligns that with his single-lap pace he is quick over a race distance. I think Mark is the most under-rated driver in F1. His height gives him a weight and packaging disadvantage, but his chief weakness is probably the flipside of his biggest strength, his mentality: he's prone to deciding, apropos of not very much, that everything is against him.
But, er, back to Vettel. Very quick but occasionally prone to rookie errors. Difficult to say more than that without being able to quantify how bad the Red Bull is in dirty air.
The general undercurrent of this debate seems to be whether the Red Bull drivers are getting the most of the car – and to that extent it reminds me of 1991, when many people thought the Benetton would be going a lot quicker if it wasn't driven by a cruise-and-collect ex-champ and a fellow who didn't dare overtake him...
But I think Webber and Vettel are better than that. In any case, Schumacher used to make the ditziest calls under pressure. He just managed to ensure that he wasn't under pressure all that often. Perhaps this is a Schu trait that Der Seb could learn from?

He was flying at Monaco until the quali accident. It was my belief at the time that he was going to get pole and drive away because he could cary the car through those short duration corners. Give him a street track and he can win. I still think it was a combination of the bumps in the braking area and th KERS system that caused the spin.

I think it was triggered in a way by a comment of Button's. He suggested that the Red Bull was faster than the Brawns. So... It must be his driving that was making the difference.

I had that when I worked in Paris. The company had a plant in Bulgaria where it had always had people from the north of England or Scotland so all the girls in the office were tuned in to that. Then a guy fro Portsmouth who went there. So he was on the phone to Paris. My Scottish mate was then translating it into a version of English that was understandable to someone who could translate it into French for the sales guy who needed the information. 4 people in a chain and only one language change.
it sounds like you've had it worse than me. I've called in from a few pay phones and had echos and it's really bad, but at least Ollia translates AFTER i've spoken. I guess you get used to it?

I am not sure if anyone has picked up on this news but it seems that FOTA has been seriously looking into a break-away series through Carmelo Ezpeleta who handles Dorma (MotoGP) rights. Here is some more info and sorry if it has already been discussed.

iPods aside (which are a rip-off) Apple hardware and software is good. User Interface is excellent, but saying that the latest Ubuntu (especially Linux Mint) rocks - its very good, stable and can be used with lighter hardware. Windows 7 is an improvement over the disastrous Vista but is not as good (can give reasons).

Why not? You run to the current regs for the first year with tyre width mods that are planned. So that's the regs done. Tracks - easy. Silverstone, Magns Cours, Imola, A1 Ring etc etc. All the tracks that have been dropped by F1. None of them ar going to refuse a breakaway F1 race. You give them the first year for free so they (and you) can assess the demand and set future pricing based on hard data.

I agree, circuits are not the problem. TV coverage by someone like Dorna would also make that problem easier. Give existing rights holders free/cheap coverage for the first year, then return them to previous levels after that.
I prefer the Red Dwarf directives that Rimmer always gets wrong and Kryten corrects.
Every channel that covers F1 has a rival channel. Besides if there is a breakaway Bernie will swap sides and bring his contracts/contacts. I think the Carmel Ezpeleta thing if there is any basis to it is the start of a negotiating policy with Bernie

When I last took LPG's laptop apart to repair it (the power lead is broken, so needs regular soldering), I found a lot of dust blocking the heatsink. This was causing the fans to run at top speed all the time. Could this be your problem?

To be brutally honest here, no. I've seen a lot of those accidents, if not all before, and I don't know how but I can watch them without trouble. I did shake my head in disbelief at Williamson's crash though.

It means that you have to be a bit careful. There is only a very limited temperature range that is is stable in. Well stable-ish as it is never really stable. And if course it can be set of by dropping it or probably with a percussion wave from a loud sound.
People who are exposed to it over a long time also become dependent on it. It initially acts as an upper then switches to a downer. The first generation who worked in the plants making it died very soon after retiring so now if someone has sufficient exposire they are put on nitroglycerine tablets for the rest of their lives.

That sounds really difficult - my school only expected students to participate in a 5-mile effort, and all the sixth-formers had to do was stand in one place, check everyone was behaving themselves and saunter back after the last stragglers had gone past their station...

It is a different approach. Just now you would be busy but I am sure there would be times you would struggle to find stuff to write about. THe politics must slip into the background some time. I think you could add something to the politics to give a bit of variety and to give you something to write about in the background. The things that spring to mind are things like sponsors new and leaving or switching teams and the background business feals. TV contracts, circuit contracts etc. I guess they are all really part of politics.

I think it is worth trying. It is a subject that gets very little coverage beyond the flood of press releases. The trick is in finding away to make it interesting to people who are intantly turned off by it.
