We are midway through the week now, and apparently this is the 280th day of the year. That is quite a lot of the year gone already, huh? Still, here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • As we're looking at where we are in the year, it's interesting to look at what we were talking about this time last year. Over on F1 Minute, we were discussing BMWs decision to retain their drivers for this season, plus the Ferrari complaints about Singapore. BMW and Singapore are both topics on our minds in 2009, but for very different reasons.
  • Here on Sidepodcast, albeit on the 5th October last year, we adopted a panda, who is now a bit of a diva who likes to star on the live streams. We also spent that day listening to the excellent Tremayning work done by the community. We really need to do that again, I think.
  • Back to the present, sort of, Alex came up with a brilliant question yesterday: "I thought it might be nice to go for a bit of a positive vibe today. So I would love to hear who your #F1Hero is. These could be serious like Fangio, or comical like Montoya’s personal chef. But whatever they are the idea is to say who it is and why you think they are your #F1Hero." You may have answered already, but if not, let us know what you think, and perhaps we'll compile them on the wiki.

That'll do it for now, I reckon. Mr C is officially addicted to the doohickey, so if you see him around this evening, tell him to get on with the homepage. I'll see you in the comments.

True, Usually I get a response in a few seconds. I began to wonder if I had been blackballed.

I had just disappeared for 30 minutes and when I got back it was quiet. Before that it was lively.

  • Steven Roy07/10/2009 at 00:17

So how is the baseball going?

  • Joe in Fla07/10/2009 at 00:18

Twins 4 Tigers 4 top of 9. Runners at the corners for the Tigers, no outs

I am still clinging to the belief that they'll have Jonathan Summerton driving in the 2nd seat, who's first, I have no idea

  • Joe in Fla07/10/2009 at 00:21

No and the Twins spring train in my town. Since the Rays are out, I'm hoping for the Twins

Agreed 100%. My fantasy line up would be Scott Speed and Summerton. I think Scott has unfinished business in F1....a championship point. And I really think he was a good driver with bad equipment and the luck to go with it.

Does he have a NASCAR deal for next year? i cant see USF1 helping him buy his way out if he does...

Some one ike heidfeld could be good, his consistancy could help them develop the car.

  • Joe in Fla07/10/2009 at 00:39

Some one ike heidfeld could be good, his consistancy could help them develop the car.

That's true about Heidfeld. My Speed line up is a fantasy, I suspect he'll be in a huge slow box next year, but he has had a really unimpressive year this year

Was this year his first? I expect they will give him another shot, I cant see him getting back into F1 unless he goes and does a few IRL races...

This was his first full year in Cup, he did a bunch of ARCA and Nationwide races last year. I suspect Red Bull has their hooks very deep in him

Yeah, he's stuck in that silver car he's in (Not a Mclaren). But JPM had a really bad year his first year and look at him now, so there's hope, even though I only watch Daytona and Talledega NASCAR races

Actually I do watch the road courses, but I can't stand the announcers for most races. I do like the superspeedway races, they are very tension filled, waiting for the big-one

I think so, he's only about 50 points back, so alot can happen and I think IRL ends it's season this weekend

hehe. very possibly. my honest guess is that it'll be booted off the calendar temporarily, while politicians use it as a playground football and then it'll all be sorted by summer.

bassano i think bought tickets though.

I was really hoping that the meet up would be in Montreal. I've been to the last two GP's and it is a wild city-wide party and always a great race...would have been better if LH had seen the red light, but anyways a great race

#MFC story from the BBC about the future of smartphones and mobile computing

I love this quote at the end:

My vision? Your phone will hide an extremely powerful computer and internet access base station. Thin sheets of roll-up electronic paper would replace your computer monitor and phone screens.

When I put this vision to the chief executive of a rapidly growing Asian phone manufacturer, I get a startled look, then a wry smile: "You should visit our labs, you will find that we've got something very interesting there."

    I feel bad:

    a) for killing the earth just a little bit more; and

scratch that, if I go to the Australia page it says "You must purchase your Kindle from this page if you are shipping to the following countries: Australia. Your Kindle shipment does not include a U.S. power adapter. Kindle ships with a micro-USB cable for charging your Kindle via a computer USB port. "

This item will be released on October 19, 2009. But I want it now!

I have an imaginary cut off limit where purchasing stuff suddenly reaches the point of "I'd probably be better off spending this much money on flights or something" and the price of a good camera falls into that bracket :D

  • Alex Andronov07/10/2009 at 09:51

Ooooh, I can't hear it but it's still funny! Looks really good too.

It's weird because you can see how few frames are actually being transmitted on mine. It was quite hard to sync them up because of the two crashes one which was my ustream crash at the beginning meant I start at a totally random time. And I had hoped to use the car horn as a kind of rough clapper board but because of your sound board going your video is out of sync with mine at that point. In the end I matched everything on the bit where I say, "off" and point at the off button - and hoped for the best!

    UK Kindle... whoop whoop:

After playing on the sony reader i am not so sure the kindle is the way to go, it looks really clunky in comparison with the big keyboard..

Monica: "Did you see time cop?"

Rachel: "No, was he any good in it?"

Monica: "Rachel, he like totally changed time!"

    Made me think of Christine!

today at work there was a Friends marathon on and I was happy but someone turned the subtitles off on the TV and I sit too far away to hear it. So I just said most of the lines in my head because I already knew them, but it's not the same :(

  • me07/10/2009 at 10:35

Nor mine. In fact, drop.io doesn't work at all now. :-(

very, very broken. i've given up complaining. will maybe try and source an alternate solution at some point.

the issue is the developers would like drop.io to be something we have no interest in (much like twitter in fact). the net result is they add more features like "chat" and "presentations" which are ultimately useless to us, but make the page very fat and slow to load.

we need a http://lite.drop.io/ or something similar.

    Morning all.

Having an utterly mad week. Loads of stuff to do anyway, but on Monday I answered the Bat-signal to fill in for a missing staff member on a certain MAGAZINE for two days. The good news for those of you who subscribe to the paper edition is that (post permitting) it will arrive on time. The bad news for me is that I'm now desperately trying to get through all the things I ought to have been doing on Monday and Tuesday.

    Jean Claude Van Damme

On Saturday night I noticed that the SciFi channel was showing Street Fighter, and watched the last 10 minutes for a giggle (not Dr Giggles). True enough, it was awful...

It's this absurd neophiliac thing in modern e-business culture, isn't it? Developers are always being told to add new and whizzy functions to things that were perfectly adequate anyway – presumably with a view to "driving new business" and "monetarizing [sic] existing business channels" etc etc.

Same thing with Facebook - last year it was great, now it's full of rubbish!

    but this is great: http://lite.facebook.com/

so i think they realised the issue.

That was designed with the aim of allowing those who don't have fast connection speeds I believe, they didn't do it to be nice to people ;)

It's this absurd neophiliac thing in modern e-business culture, isn't it? Developers are always being told to add new and whizzy functions to things that were perfectly adequate anyway - presumably with a view to "driving new business" and "monetarizing [sic] existing business channels" etc etc.

I agree, however its all in the name of progress and M|F|C

"An enchanting mythical journey for readers aged eight and upwards, Nostradormouse takes an anthropomorphic odyssey round... "

I was actually taught the word when I was around eight by my science teacher. Some of the kids were upset that they were going to have to dissect something and one of them asked, "won't it hurt its feelings if we dissect it?"

And the teacher replied, "no, you are committing the anthropomorphic error, animals do not have feelings, simply instincts."

They may well have. She was my favourite teacher at that age though.

She had a massive beehive hairdo, smoked cigars between every class, and was the mother of the two identical twins who are responsible for David Hasslehoff's music career. This sounds made up, but is all true.

QADBAK appear to be attempting to hire rich people to pretend to be there investors. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/football_league/article6864303.ece#cid=OTC-RSS&attr=796995

Why is this starting to sound ludicrously dodgy? If any team is not going to make it next year, it sounds like it could well be them.

BMW could well have a bite in the tail coming if it's revealed they have sold the team without checking them out first.

He was certainly on the scene. That flip-flop contract person had a veritable conga line of people purporting to be his management at the time.

But is it Williams' business to object another team because the investors are dodgy? Because that's what Frank Williams is arguing...

There is a reason he's been given a veto. He could be doing it to protect his teams reputation in racing in a decent series. He could be doing it because it would mean less money for him. And he could be doing it because there isn't really room for 14 teams.

I don't think he's interested in being a #2 to Lewis, and there's no vacancies at Ferrari. But if he proves his worth in a lower team, he can get the dream ticket someday. BMW's setup of equal treatment may have meant Kubica's talent wasn't fully maximized (or at least that's how Kubica feels).

What about DC? I think they are still looking to replace him

  • Journeyer07/10/2009 at 12:21

Did you really think a driver like Kubica would not have had a drive next year? Considering he was a free agent, the top teams weren't exactly rushing to secure his services?

Well, there were bigger fish in the market (like Alonso and Raikkonen).

  • Bassano Clapper07/10/2009 at 12:21

But as his default seat has now gone, it is a step up

    I see your point though

Never rated him. Another also ran

  • Maverick07/10/2009 at 12:23

  • Nick07/10/2009 at 12:23

Never rated him. Another also ran

    Exactly.

Support driver, thats what they probably wanted Heikki to do, but he doesn't have the consistency that role requires.

He WAS bad value for money because BMW were so overpriced at the start of the year, but NOW? Is he worse value for money now than the more expensive Alguersuari and Buemi?

Perhaps it is your Fantasy Racers Analysis that has put every one off? :-D

  • Bassano Clapper07/10/2009 at 12:32

Yeah just saw, i probably won't be commenting in it though, because it was THE most obviously thing in the world ever. I almost bet my student loan on it happening!

Not quite, but it was pretty obvious

He hasn't been near the podium all year - he has scored poorly in most racers and people are not picking him - this drives his price down.

Kathi reckons he's good now because his points per million ratio has improved, but that only works if you buy him now...

  • Maverick07/10/2009 at 12:35

    Exactly!

Kathi reckons he's good now because his points per million ratio has improved, but that only works if you buy him now...

    Exactly!

But if you bought him at the start of the year like me (based on quick time in FP in Aus and his drives last year), he has been awful on average!

  • Maverick07/10/2009 at 12:39

But if you bought him at the start of the year like me (based on quick time in FP in Aus and his drives last year), he has been awful on average!

You should do a driver value graph based on the last five races only. Ferrari, McLaren and BMW do poorly because they were initially valued on last year's performance. And Brawn is the other way round.

  • RubberGoat (Gavin Brown)07/10/2009 at 12:41

I do one based on the past three (after your comment) - is that not useful?

  • Maverick07/10/2009 at 12:43

I do one based on the past three (after your comment) - is that not useful?

Sorry, must have been misreading it. Is that total points per current value or "points per value" at each race averaged across the races?

It's an average based on the last three races - Kubica is still rubbish but as his value has decreased his PPM has increased and he is better value for money - a good pick if you have the cash...

  • Maverick07/10/2009 at 12:47

I do one based on the past three (after your comment) - is that not useful?

Ah, no, I've seen that. I mean points per million based on the last three races, and use the current driver value rather than an average over the three races. I think the value for money stat is the most useful (he says with only 2 races to go!)

  • Bassano Clapper07/10/2009 at 12:47

... a good pick if you have the cash...

If he manages to finish a race again

Yeah I only just realised this on Sunday. It's a shame nobody picked this up earlier as I would have been happy to have done it.

He's in the top third of the value for money, so seems a good pick.

If you have the money? He's the cheapest driver actually racing!

The car will be fully developed in CFD like the Wirth Acura ARX-02a.

Now I didn't realise that - the Acura was the car that got on pole for Sebring and was at Petit Petit Le Mans this year - it's quite quick and a great proof of concept ;)

    Are they?

Quad bike release a statement saying A and B are the main owners and A loves it very much.

A personally says he has nothing to do with them.

Quad bike release another statement saying B is upset by the snooping.

Oh my goodness i've had the most amazing morning. One of my lecturers for my Motorsport Industry Skills modules owns TSL (who was MST, they basically run all Timing for Motorsport events, expect F1) and the other used to be the chief safety officer for F1 and is now on the MSA commitee!!

They also hinted to us that at Hungry during quali (when the screens go down), they did have timing, it was just wrong. They have something called 'The big red button' which cuts all timing and graphics from everywhere, and so when the timing "went down" they'd pushed that button!

  • Maverick07/10/2009 at 13:11

It makes a lot of sense period. Although I do no use Ubuntu, its a good OS. I really like my silver MSI wind netbook with its black keyboard. I use an OS called Pardus because we have such bad internet connection it is the best for keeping the OS updated, also has multiple monitor support.

how is it possible that you install new ubuntu versions, before i even get the memo that they've been released??

Karmic's been around for a few weeks - technically in unstable version. I tried it out, but as I wanted a KDE desktop it was not quite as good as other KDE. My assessment of various OS Windows XP 4/10 Windows Vista 1/10, Mac OSX 7.5/10, Ubuntu Karmic 6.5/10, Pardus 9.5/10. Karmic has a fast boot-up but in KDE form a little resource hungry but I found completely stable.

You want to not run OS X on your Mac. At least Bootcamp it ;)

OS X is good and very stable - but honestly Pardus is better for us with poor bandwidth. Maintaining the OS is painful - lots of times you simply cannot access Apple to update.

"¨One of the most revolutionary and innovative changes with Pardus 2009 is the ability of delta packages, making it unnecessary to download the whole application in an update or upgrade. Consider that the application the user listens to his/her MP3 files has released a new version. It is not necessary to search for, find, download, uninstall the old version and install the new version by clicking many 'Next' buttons. Pardus Package Manager, running on top of PiSi, fetches all updates with the click of a button. In its simplest terms, Package Manager downloads only the 'difference' of the old and new versions, a small delta file in technical terms. With this new feature, updates are now no more than 10 percent of the original package in terms of size. In other terms, Pardus 2009 is the best friend of users with limited internet connectivity, preserving their quota¨.

Its entire management of KDE makes for an uber-fast and stable desktop that is also very easy on the eye and in use.

  • Andy Taylor07/10/2009 at 14:55

I suppose that makes sense although there are other ways of keeping up to date.

  • Rich07/10/2009 at 15:01

COOL! Why doesn't Windows have that?

Most employers will limit users to 500 Mbyte a month here in SA. It is rare for normal users to purchase more than 1GB a month bindle due to the prohibitive cost. So Pardus is absolutely awesome under such circumstances. I have a Netbook plus a 1900 X 1050 monitor which will run dual screen (with the native screen of the netbook) on up to six independent desktops without complaining! You never have to minimize a window - ever!

Pardus is actually the Latin for Leopard and it was gentle dig at Apple.

it has an application called PiSi (Packages Installed Successfully as Intended). It is the primary tool for installing, upgrading and removing software packages. PiSi stores and handles the dependencies for the various packages, libraries, and COMAR tasks. "Pisi" is a Turkish word meaning "kitty", intended as a pun on the distribution's name.

In case you did not get it its a Turkish distro!

He knows, I just told him :)

  • Christine07/10/2009 at 15:09

that is an awful suggestion! i don't want christine to hide the apps she's using, i want her to stop opening 35 at a time.

I don't open 35 at a time. I open them one at a time. Then I think I've closed them but I haven't because Macs don't like to close things.

  • me07/10/2009 at 15:10

I don't open 35 at a time. I open them one at a time. Then I think I've closed them but I haven't because Macs don't like to close things.

fair point. the close button looks like a quit button, but isn't.

That's because OS X lets you run a program with no windows open. Cmd-Q is your friend here.

I don't open 35 at a time. I open them one at a time. Then I think I've closed them but I haven't because Macs don't like to close things.

True, it closes the Window, not the application (except for iPhoto and iMovie for some strange reason).

  • me07/10/2009 at 15:13

    Macs sound soooooooo complicated ;)

i can't win an argument against christine on this one. she's proven that the window management system in osx is fundamentally up the creek, even in software apple write themselves.

as alex proved earlier with the itunes shortcut doing something different.

  • Andy Taylor07/10/2009 at 15:13

The thing is though, when you click on something in OSX I get the impression the computer knows what it is doing, even if i dont, with windows its a bit like you are offering up a prayer sometimes whilst the CPU makes all sorts odd noises as it thinks about the philosophical meaning behind your latest instruction

It's the menu's fault. And it's windows fault. But ultimately it needs to get fixed as more and more windows users come over and get disapointed by the one thing that does work in windows.

  • Christine07/10/2009 at 15:16

People will deny but they are a little more complicated than say Ubuntu.

but if you want the best OS there is here is the link....

The KDE desktop might take a little time to get used but the guys over at ZDNet Australia had fun convincing people that KDE was the new Windows 7!

I'm not sure that is true, for me it makes perfect sense, but then I'm a UNIX geek, so I know a bit about what's happening behind the scenes.

On a related note, and I am sure I have mentioned this before on here, there's a great article about why Macs have a Cmd (apple) key and a Ctrl key and the issues caused by PCs only having a Ctrl key.

  • Andy Taylor07/10/2009 at 15:22

I'm not sure that is true, for me it makes perfect sense, but then I'm a UNIX geek, so I know a bit about what's happening behind the scenes.

The menu is the problem as far as I can tell because the last close box of an application is at the level of the menu. That makes more sense. The problem is that the menu being right at the top is best because we know it means faster access because you can throw the mouse at the top of the screen and it always hits.

So you have a problem. I think Apple should add another button to the 3 buttons. And STOP allowing those 3 buttons to do different things based on context. That is such a non-apple thing it's unreal.

I saw them live back in the day. While the support band was on there were several Mexican bandits wondering around in the audience handing out free Tequila shots. When it was time for the band to come on the Mexican bandits waded to the front of the crowd vaulted the barriers and clambered onto the stage. Twas the band.

Regarding Kimi to Red Bull rumours: my source (and I cringe saying that phrase) has said it's a load of hogwash created by German publication Bild during a slow news weeks.

Speaking of hogs.... Swine flu isn't much fun. But the tablets they give you (Tamiflu) make you feel twice as worse as well. Oh well, I'm have a much superior immune system to you all this time next week :-D

I have another new stores from Orange's F1 insider (it's all I have to make do with on my computer at work F1 wise!) who says that the rebranded BMW team will be granted the 14th place on the grid after no objections by the other teams.

  • Scott Woodwiss07/10/2009 at 17:59

Ooh, #F1 Hero sounds interesting. Well, no question for me: Senna

For me the guy was a genius, if not a controversial one at times. He not only had a god-given talent behind the wheel, but he was also very philosophical and intuitive off the track. Some of his quotes I feel can be applied to life in general as well as racing. He always seemed so "to himself" at times but he had a fun side to his persona. Once he was behind the wheel it was all business. He had his dark moments against Prost and the like but they all add to his legacy. Plus, my dad regards him very highly as well.

    OK, done and done. Next!

  • Bassano Clapper07/10/2009 at 18:00

#F1 hero? Oh I do read the daily posts, honest.

For me, not Glocky, not Liuzzi, not even Rob Bell (yeah, i know he hasn't been in F1, but its just to progress the comment). My #F1 here is the one and only, Luciano Burti. He's showed that crash prone people can still make it into F1.

Martin has also indicated concerns about the shadowy ownership of the team. I have just accepted that my team is history. I do not blame other teams for expressing concerns. I do blame BMW who were only interested in selling with minimum loss - absolutely no integrity. I would rather buy a Renault than a BMW.

oh I think Williams did not want the competition - that is as clear as daylight. They also want unfair advantage next year what with the KERS etc.

  • Bassano Clapper07/10/2009 at 18:11

oh I think Williams did not want the competition - that is as clear as daylight. They also want unfair advantage next year what with the KERS etc.

Why would it be unfair, let everyone have KERS. They've put enough money into it. Start putting it to good use

  • Rich07/10/2009 at 18:11

Well, as bad as they were, they weren't as influencial as Burti.

I though PK rather rewrote a chapter in the history of F1. No Flav no Pat!

  • Jon Waldock07/10/2009 at 18:12

I though PK rather rewrote a chapter in the history of F1. No Flav no Pat!

you've got a point...not sure that makes him quite hero material yet though ;)

  • Rich07/10/2009 at 18:13

Why would it be unfair, let everyone have KERS. They've put enough money into it. Start putting it to good use

Williams is clearly wanting to run KERS and everyone else to agree not to under the FOTA. I am confident they will simply make an excuse to leave FOTA and then will run their KERS come 2010.

  • Jon Waldock07/10/2009 at 18:14

Williams is clearly wanting to run KERS and everyone else to agree not to under the FOTA. I am confident they will simply make an excuse to leave FOTA and then will run their KERS come 2010.

I see little point being in FOTA anymore, apart from a unity thing. They will still be in the OTWG and other such pointless bodys, so not sure they care

  • Rich07/10/2009 at 18:14

you've got a point...not sure that makes him quite hero material yet though ;)

Banishing Briatore in a strange way gives him a certain tarnished hero status. I share intense Joe's dislike for Flav.

Williams is clearly wanting to run KERS and everyone else to agree not to under the FOTA. I am confident they will simply make an excuse to leave FOTA and then will run their KERS come 2010.

  • Rich07/10/2009 at 18:16

The villian is BMW for selling their staff out

We agree hence my boycott of their products (well I cannot afford them any way)

  • RG07/10/2009 at 18:17

We agree hence my boycott of their products (well I cannot afford them any way)

Are caps and shirts involved in this boycott?

  • Nick07/10/2009 at 18:17

i wonder if we will see the stewards reconsidering the rosberg non-penalty at the next race?

  • Rich07/10/2009 at 18:18

    Then everyone else will follow

Except the KERS has a major influence in the entire design of the car - especially that larger fuel tanks need to be used. I am sure Williams are designing with KERS, hence their veto of the disk pad thickness etc.

  • Bassano Clapper07/10/2009 at 18:19

i wonder if we will see the stewards reconsidering the rosberg non-penalty at the next race?

There needs to be an appeal first, surely?

  • Rich07/10/2009 at 18:19

Are caps and shirts involved in this boycott?

buying new ones yes, unless they say Sauber as well in which case its worker solidarity.

  • Bassano Clapper07/10/2009 at 18:19

i wonder if we will see the stewards reconsidering the rosberg non-penalty at the next race?

    I'll cover the BMW bit.

  • Rich07/10/2009 at 18:20

Is it not too late to appeal - probably best to simply drop the topic.

  • Rich07/10/2009 at 18:21

    I'll cover the BMW bit.

Better still I will produce patches to cover the BMW bits!

  • Bassano Clapper07/10/2009 at 18:21

    I'll cover the BMW bit.

Known as undoING the logo ;)

  • Rich07/10/2009 at 18:22

Not only was Brawn affected so was Nick Heidfeld who still seems to have no prospects for a bucket next year.

  • Nick07/10/2009 at 18:23

Is it not too late to appeal - probably best to simply drop the topic.

It wasnt at the begining of the season...

What incident were you referring to?

  • Bassano Clapper07/10/2009 at 18:24

Not only was Brawn affected so was Nick Heidfeld who still seems to have no prospects for a bucket next year.

Would anyone notice if he were there?

    Apart from amusing GridWalk quotes

  • Rich07/10/2009 at 18:25

I never liked BMW anyway. if bmwdriver, then jerk!

so you are telling me Nick is jerk - I am mightily upset as I supported him since he was with Prost.

  • Nick07/10/2009 at 18:25

What incident were you referring to?

the stewards flying to malaysia to review hamiltons testimony at the next race.

I belive a key bit of evidence then was ain interview with ted which started it all off.

Looking at Nico's onboard should cleer it all up

  • me07/10/2009 at 18:27

I belive a key bit of evidence then was ain interview with ted which started it all off.

nope. speedtv. but you're right about the rest.

stewards were also reconvened in china '07 to look at eveidence of lewis driving in dangerously at the previous event (fuji). it can be done.

  • jpancoast07/10/2009 at 18:27

so you are telling me Nick is jerk - I am mightily upset as I supported him since he was with Prost.

    I'm joking :). DIdn't mean to offend.

It just seems that over here in the states every bmw driver drives like a jerk. My boss used to drive an M3, and I gave him no end of good natured ribbing about it :)

  • Rich07/10/2009 at 18:27

Would anyone notice if he were there?

At Silverston last year in the rain he pulled off two two double overtakes which include both Alonso and Kimi. Just remember when Kimi, Felipe and Mark were team mates Nick scored more points per race than any of them.

  • Nick07/10/2009 at 18:28

nope. speedtv. but you're right about the rest.

I thought they asked the bbc for their footage?

  • Rich07/10/2009 at 18:28

It just seems that over here in the states every bmw driver drives like a jerk. My boss used to drive an M3, and I gave him no end of good natured ribbing about it :)

I am as sensitive on Nick as Amy is on Kovy - what other driver has had 56 races without an accident? Silly Sutil!

  • me07/10/2009 at 18:29

I thought they asked the bbc for their footage?

the original interview was with speed tv. it's possible that the bbc had additional footage, but it wasn't the catalyst.

  • Rich07/10/2009 at 18:29

It just seems that over here in the states every bmw driver drives like a jerk. My boss used to drive an M3, and I gave him no end of good natured ribbing about it :)

Yes, but the teams cannot complain now, but the FIA could investigate and the penalise.

For the FIA to change yes- but for a team to put an objection in I think it has to be over the race weekend.

the teams have to complain within a certain time window and then they have to be personally involved (McLaren hadn't had the right to complain about the too cold fuel) and then ... ah who cares. Good night :)

drop.io is slow but accessible, anything involving Yahoo simply times out, but Google is strangely fast including iTunes - been like this for about 18 months.

It would be great to put that data up for a sort of community analysis but Gavin does such a great job though with his postings. Thanks.

Protests against any error or irregularity occurring

during a competition, referring to the non-compliance of

vehicles with the regulations and concerning the

classification established at the end of the event shall,

except in circumstances which the stewards of the meeting

consider as physically impossible be made within thirty

minutes of the official publication of the results.

There is some wiggle room there, not a great deal, but you could argue new evidence had come to light...

    They must however, under

pain of forfeiture of their right to appeal, notify the stewards of the

meeting in writing within one hour of the publication of the

decision of their intention to appeal.

Looks like they cannot appeal though...

That's regarding non-compliant vehicles, not actions

Reading again, it seems to be regarding protests of many infringements

  • Bassano Clapper07/10/2009 at 19:01

interesting. is there more on actions?

I think it's about classification protests in general

"Protests against any error or irregularity occurring

during a competition, [or] referring to the non-compliance of

vehicles with the regulations and concerning the

classification established at the end of the event"

  • me07/10/2009 at 19:03

I think it's about classification protests in general

ok, that confirms what we thought. is there a ruling on under what circumstances the fia can reconvene stewards?

am just reading through gp+ to see if there's anything it re:lewis in melbourne.

  • Nick07/10/2009 at 19:04

That's regarding non-compliant vehicles, not actions

    I dont think it is...

Chapter XII is where i got the information from, it begins...

    a) A protest against the entry of a competitor or driver, or

against the length of the course must be lodged, at the

latest, two hours after the closing time for the official

    scrutineering of the vehicles.

  • lou07/10/2009 at 19:15

    hey lou. how are ya?

i'm feeling much better than i have all week, i've been all over the place, a total mess is probably the best way of putting it. however i've just had a driving lesson in this weather (tis very heavily raining and pitch black) and although it was hard it's cheered me up a little. plus i'm now editing photos from Saturday while drinking diet coke. all seems to be well atm :) how are you mr c? did/is the move going well?

  • Janna07/10/2009 at 19:21

i think it's important to recognise one's limits. we're good at naming songs with the word dog in them.

One last thing, whilst I was reading Chapter XI on Penalties I noticed this part in section 152 "As well as this and independently of the prescriptions of the following Articles, the FIA may, upon the proposal and report of the FIA observer or the joint report of the two international stewards of the meeting designated by the FIA, directly inflict a penalty which will take the place of any penalty which the stewards of the meeting may have pronounced on any one of the above-mentioned parties. In this case, the ASN concerned cannot refuse to appeal to the International Court of Appeal on behalf of the party concerned." It seems like their get-out clause if the FIA want to impose a greater penalty after the event

  • Steven Roy07/10/2009 at 19:22

it's really helped. i went out feeling all stressed and low and everything, and have come back very calm and happy. :)

We're trying to get a crowd together to come down, night races are amaaaazing

  • Nick07/10/2009 at 19:25

not in this part of the world it isnt!

I cant belive people are allowed to just park on the road in this country, the streets and roads are so narrow!

Makes me want to buy a hummer and clear a path for everyone else!

We're trying to get a crowd together to come down, night races are amaaaazing

and when i say Night races, i mean proper night races, not those poxy ones that are under lights

  • Janna07/10/2009 at 19:26

Agreed, driving is good for that

It's a good distraction. It lets your mind work on the problem in the background whilst you concentrate on the driving. I can't drive now, I didn't get a car once I passsed my test, but I find a long walk with a good podcast to listen to has the same effect.

    On my way

  • lou07/10/2009 at 19:26

wow i'd never thought about doing anything like night races... that would be cool. where is it at Brands?

  • Jon Waldock07/10/2009 at 19:27

I wonder if they allow flash? If not, I'm sure you could get some good atmospheric shots!

  • Scott Woodwiss07/10/2009 at 19:28

Glowing brakes are always a winner.

  • lou07/10/2009 at 19:28

    yeaaahhh.

cool! i'll have to see what i'm doing in a months time (i really don't plan a month in advance. but i'll write it in my calender and if nothing pops up and i'm free i'll certainly pop up to Brands Hatch :)

  • Janna07/10/2009 at 19:28

  • Jon Waldock07/10/2009 at 19:29

I wonder if they allow flash? If not, I'm sure you could get some good atmospheric shots!

it's brilliant for shots, especially it being brands, meaning you can get close to the cars

  • Jon Waldock07/10/2009 at 19:29

Jon, are you leaning on your keyboard? ;)

    nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooope

  • lou07/10/2009 at 19:29

Glowing brakes are always a winner.

you can get pics of glowing brakes during the day too :) but during the night that would be great.

Flash will probably be useless during the actual race. Flash ranges arent' that great.

  • lou07/10/2009 at 19:34

i have a tiny gorrillapod for my small digi camera which is useful, not sure a gorrillapod is 100% useful for motorsports photography though :D

  • lou07/10/2009 at 19:41

Lou, what kind of camera (and lens) are you going to be using?

depends but i mostly use my Nikon D70s with my sigma 70-300mm lens.

There is no point to answering inane questions that require you to list everyone who got a fastest lap last season.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/10/2009 at 20:44

  • me07/10/2009 at 20:45

to a point yes. however, laws have been created to protect people from the likes of him. ideally we wouldn't wish to invoke them, but i suspect that if things continue we may have too.

  • Lukeh07/10/2009 at 20:46

The marshalls one isnt a stupid question, the others arent either but the answers are way too long

To be honest you need to be doing the quiz from the start to really get the idea but lets just leave it at that and move on...

  • Jon Waldock07/10/2009 at 20:47

  • Steven Roy07/10/2009 at 20:48

The marshalls one isnt a stupid question, the others arent either but the answers are way too long

There are sensible answers to them but one after another after another where you have to write lists does not make for a fun evening. The questions are at a level where someone who knew nothing of the sport could compose them. Anyone with a book or wikipedia could come up with the questions in seconds.

Who can honestly remember who all got fastest laps last season?

I am sure I named all the flags but it is a dull question

Hi everyone. Advice to all - when your car is 37 years old it may break down more often than you'd like it to.

I've just spent half the evening in the company of the RAC thanks to the Beetle deciding that the battery is something it doesn't want to charge. :(

  • RG07/10/2009 at 20:55

I'm a big fan of this site : http://www.footballfilter.com/ (warning, features football). But it would be awesome if there was something like that for F1. Would make life much easier for all I'd reckon. Just a general thought out loud.

I have had similar problems a few times in cars a fraction of that age

PF had a worse guest host before now. It's stressful leaving it in other people's hands.

    Who's the host/question maker?

Someone who is not highly regarded round here

Someone posted the link below earlier and I only just got round to checking it out. It proves that whn Max and co say that there has never been lots of overtaking in F1 they are talking rubbish. It is also worth remembering that in 1983 and before people complained about the lack of overtaking compared to previous decades.

There was more overtaking but I wouldn't say there was a lot in 1983 to be honest. Is twice as much overtaking sufficient improvement?

    According to the urban dictionary:

"The nicest way to refer to any female. Used respectfully like this in Australia. A completely non-derrogatory comment, that in general (most chick's I've talked to) is non-offensive to women and better than most alternative's."

And it also points out this handy safety advice:

    "Don't call chicks broads."

  • Nick07/10/2009 at 21:55

    what's a MWM?

Mid week motorsport. Its a talkshow/podcast by radio Le mans.

It does cover quite a lot of sports, but they are quite abrasive and arrogant in my opinion. that ridiculous post on Ted and the bbc coverage was the last straw for me.

I disagree - they are opinionated but I like their banter. You can't have everyone agree with you...

The poor guy has lost his helmet! HIS HELMET!

  • Bert07/10/2009 at 22:15

The only thing is, that is not a helmet case. All the drivers I have seen use some sort of plus-sized helmet softshell or hardshell. Add to that, the thing seemed a bit too heavy.

    I call shenanigans! Shenanigans!!!!

  • Alison07/10/2009 at 22:15

The poor guy has lost his helmet! HIS HELMET!

It was a stupid helmet anyways. Plus he must have dozens of spares. If he damages one on a racing weekend, there's no way he has to sit it out because it was his only one.

He probably just wants to come out with an awesome new design and get some attention for it.

  • Nick07/10/2009 at 22:16
