We are into Tuesday already, which means Monday is well and truly gone. I don't know about anyone else, but I found it to be quite a stressful one. Turning towards today instead, then, here are some of the things we're discussing:
- Alguersuari seems to think that this weekend saw a big improvement in his own performance, and that it was one of his best weekends in Formula 1. I can see what he's trying to say, that the car was good and he felt comfortable in it and everything was working well, until he crashed into the barriers - as illustrated here.
- We've talked about Harry's blog before, she's spending a year following Formula 1 around the world and writing about it as she goes... sort of. Posts have been missing in action recently, but there's been a round up of the last few races, and it's fair to say she's having a good time!
- We've not been shy about expressing our Jake love here at Sidepodcast, but I have to say his post-race blog entries are one of the best things about the BBC's coverage. He's got a genuine enthusiasm for the racing drama, but fills us in on plenty of behind the scenes gossip from the paddock as well. Far from showing off, Jake has a way of bringing us along for the ride without going over the top. Yay for Jake!
That should do for now. There's the possibility of an announcement or two today, but I'll save that for the potential breakout threads. I'll see you in the comments.
I almost forgot! I played with one of those sony E-readers this afternoon in waterstones. It was really cool, i could picture myself using one instead of a book!
That said, the price wasnt anywhere near making it worthwhile for me.
Amazon don't do video downloads which is what I was after :(
Sooo tired and yet i wake up in the middle of the night... Is there no justice!
Seems insanely quiet... Anyone lurking?
Been quiet for a while
I was worried about waking the dead...
Seems to be some excitement for the race developing in the UAE http://www.gulfnews.com/sport/Motor_Racing/10355055.html
I wonder how many places have the problems of volenteers demanding to use their porsche's on the track!
First time I have heard of that
hehe, they love to race in the UAE... camels, horses, Dhows, class 1 powerboats... I really hope F1 takes off with the Emirati locals.
I have been sat in the passenger seat enough times to know they love to street race.
I bet there are going to be a lot of bent cars when they let those guys loose
Possibly, I am amazed there arent more accidents on the roads, there seems to be a magic art to going between cars and not hitting them on roads 6 lanes wide on each side
An old Major general friend of my dads once told me that learning to drive there would probably be the best place in the world as you learn to drive defensively on massive roads.
I remember the Ferrari dealer in Edinburgh put on a day at a local track for Ferrari owners a few years ago. A couple of guys I knew were there as marshals and there was all sorts of damage including two brand new top of the range Ferraris totally written off
Hehe, i would expect that to happen over there 2.
Way back when i was at my old house in the CBD there was a massive screech and a crash behind my house. some guy had managed to flip his camero and land it belly up in the middle of a flowerbed on a roundabout.
I looked over the wall and he was yelling into his phone, i have no idea who he was talking to, but he was not happy.
Probably he thought the conversation was more important than watching the road.
hehe it was 2 or 3 mins after, but that is pobably quite likely to have been a cause..
I agree with your Jake comments. I think he's a great presenter, so funny when the short one had a pop at him ! :-)
There were jake comments?
I must have missed them... where were they?
Jake has been the biggest positive surprise of the BBC's coverage. At the start of the years none of us had any confidence that he would b any good but he has been fabulous from day one
In Christine's post
Ah i misread and thought there were negative jake commentws which i had missed!
Go Jakey boy¬!
I haven't heard a single negative comment about him since the start of the season
Sadly, I think the race will be boring, just like Valencia, Bahrain, Malaysia etc, yet another purpose built boringdrome :-(
Aside from the pretentious MWM guys, i havent either. He has done really well..
I like bahrain, people can overtake there! Jackie also said it is his favourite of the new ones!
No use heading to it in the doldrums, it could and should be good.
Declan from MWM posted a comment on Joe's blog earlier and included an invite for Joe to go on MWM. Joe accepted
Yeah i saw that, I decided they were too up themselves to listen to, but i might listen to that.
Quite. I was sceptical when the missus said "Oh he used to be on childrens bbc" - but he's been great, knowledgeable, sense of humour and keeps the david and eddie show in check !
Anyone know where there is a up to date list on who is rumored to be driving for what team next year etc?
try here http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/10/04/driver-market-on-the-move/
Thanks
I think there is something on the bbc site, iirc ?
there are these little security gadgets that banks give away with the internet banking. The one I have displays combination of 6 digits. Those 6 digits combined with my password grant me an access to my bank account. Those 6 digits are always displayed for few seconds only. Afterwards the display goes blank. When used again different 6 random digits appear. Digits, always digits. Last night however I realized there is a word on display. The display hasn't turned itself off since, the word is still there. The thing has frozen and likely will stay that way till the battery dies. Is it trying to tell me the outcome of the F1 championship battle ? :-)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/message-jpg
OK, the image does not seem to display itself properly, no idea what I am doing wrong ....
I think it should be this for the link: http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/message-jpg-2
i think your litte gadget may be telling the truth!
Me too!
im bored. I still have 75 minutes of work left. Where is that time machine?
Sorry, it's in the future at the moment.
thats ok. Ill just anticipate my dinner instead. Mmm. Chicken.
Boxed?
Morning.
Pretentious? How so? OK, so they prefer sportcars and like to take the p***, but it's good banter...
Have you got a link?
not boxed, wrapped in a tortilla!
after the upload via doohickey failed I dropped it directly :-)
ah... I think I know what the bug is... You uploaded a file with a name that already existed. So the site changed the name of the file which caused the link fail.
that is probably the case
#MFC New rules to end 'blogger payola'
FTA:"US regulators will for the first time crack down on bloggers who fail to disclose fees or freebies they get from companies for reviewing products."
Hmm - as with all things like this, sounds interesting but unworkable!
Oddly enough, I just got my earphones caught in the wheel of my chair. The Earbud was wedged in the axle and it took ages to fish out - still working though :D
Morning all, so what time are we expecting the kubica announcement?
No idea :)
I heard 10am, but I hear a lot of things. ;)
I thought it might be nice to go for a bit of a positive vibe today. So I would love to hear who your #F1Hero is. These could be serious like Fangio, or comical like Montoya's personal chef. But whatever they are the idea is to say who it is and why you think they are your #F1Hero.
So I guess I should start off...
My #F1Hero is Nakajima's Lollypop man. Standing there bravely facing regular run ins week in week out can not be easy. So he's my #F1Hero
my #F1Hero is McLaren marketing guru John Allert. For getting me into the cricket :D :D
I'll go for another #F1Hero. Mark Hughes, every race he stands in the commentary box with Legard. Unlike Martin he can't even interrupt him. And yet he has never had to hit him. Amazing!
My #F1Hero is the cameraman who follows around Jake as he walks and talks :D
Ha!! I like this.
Walking backwards and filming!
another #F1Hero must be all of yooooou because without SPC I'd probably still be dreaming of the future when I might get to go to a European race rather than actually having tickets to one.
Do you think there are two of them, one facing the right way and guiding? Actually the guy who does Martins goes even quicker!
happens to me all the time :-)
Morning Christine... So who is yours?
Morning, everyone.
Ooooh, nice topic! :D
My #F1Hero must be Murray Walker. He's the reason why I really fell in love with the sport, especially its history. :)
A great one... Have you listened to the talk from the other night yet?
Yup! It was MEGA. You're lucky to get those opportunities to go to such events. :)
:D
Hmmm.
My #F1Hero is Vettel because he is always smiling and talking about the fun he has in the car, even if he's had a bad day.
He always does seem very happy. Imagine that a guy who enjoys what he does. Interestingly Lewis seems to be enjoying things more now he isn't under as much pressure. But Vettel edges him because he's under pressure and still smiley :)
Tomorrow is the last day for the Central Perk in London... I think I might have to go along today at lunchtime!
Oooooooh.
Indeed! Ooooooh! A bit of a live commenting + video adventure I think :)
I demand streaming since I want to go toooo (but its just a tiny bit too far away)
Well that turns it into a woohooooo!
I was catching up with the Scott Mills podcast and he went and said he met Gunther, but every time they pronounced it with a hard t. It was really annoying.
I may not stream because it isn't really live anyway... But I'll do video and comments I think one after the other.
Urgh!
woo!
Ooh, I just read that Bordy won his Superleague race (only two days behind, eh-hem). Seems like he's good everywhere but F1.
Unless he gets beaten by Mark Webber in which case he's Mr Cranky
Reading the comments backwards is really weird
around way right the them read you don't Why?
My F1Hero is Ron Dennis. He brought the best out of some outstanding F1 talent, and not just drivers. A true F1 man.
LOL. Maybe I should have said upside down, or in the wrong order. I try to guess what's going on before I get to the original post.
My #F1Hero is the guy who decides the music on the BBC - hasn't it been brilliant this year?
Oops, forgot the #. #F1Hero
Nah you said it right ;)
Does filtering the comments not help?
Absolutely! The FOM guy has also chosen some great songs. :)
Sometimes makes it more confusion. LCLT probably makes it easier than the doohickey
Amy, I got an e-mail from the camping site. The price for the mobile home is €145 not €125. #nothingtoseehere
he's good everywhere but toro rosso?
#didntseenothing
still cheap enough for me! #nopenothingatall
Could be. Although, it does say he was very good at the rolling start.
That's from Champ Car - perhaps he is better at this because the other drivers may not have raced in America?
Morning guys
for the Dr Who fans, seen the new logo?
I like the video version: http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/logo/index.shtml
Oooh, new stuff! Saw some pictures today of them filming episode 1 too.
Oops, incomplete comment.
Saw some pictures today of them filming episode 1 too. Not sure I like seeing the new doctor in the old doctor's clothes.
Presumably that's for the transformation. It was weird with the old doctor in Eccleston's clothes. That leather jacket really really didn't suit him.
Yeah I'm sure it's just for the transformation bit. Tennant was tiny in the leather jacket and stuff!
Good point. Of course, the trouble with the new doctor is his actual clothes are weird too!
Got pics?
In fact we've already seen the bow tie haven't we.
Wereas the old one was based on... Jamie Oliver in a long coat!
Grr rain grr
Why can't it stay as summer?
I see there are some on the site Lukeh linked to: http://www.bleedingcool.com/2009/10/05/doctor-who-building-a-location/
The ones I saw are here: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/a180627/the-latest-doctor-who-filming-pics.html
Do you like trees and that ;)
Both those links have pictures in which I've never seen Smith like that.... the ones I saw he was dressed completely different!
@NobleF1: "There are suggestions that the Renault-Kubica announcement has been delayed for unspecified reasons. It may be later today or even tomorrow"
Cold feet?
I think they both look about right there
Money? No assurances on Renault's involvement?
Yeah same here
Flav has broken into Renault and stolen the contract
this could be solved by issuing watering cans to the whole country!
blabbermarsh speaks again (actually no breaking news here). on the subject of the bmw takeover:
"I think you're referring to Russell King, and I have to say I started being concerned for Sauber when I heard his name. "
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79297
#poormartin
he brings it on himself ;)
Doesn't he just. Didn't the man learn anything from Ron? ;-)
The thing about him is that he may actually be playing quite a cunning game. But it's very hard to tell ;)
I think it may be the content of the watering cans that's the issue.
pretty much everything.
everything or nothing ?
i think everything. i'm with alex. it's a cunning game.
At least your weather isn't schizophrenic. 32 degrees one day, 15 two days later
His slip about Alonso was definitely calculated.
Martin Sneakymarsh?
his kimi quote even more so.
McLaren out to get their engine division more than a rumour perhaps ...
The silent quote?
very possibly interested in IP, yup.
the one where he didn't have an answer.
Yeah. It's important to remember with these things that things very rarely happen with public proclimations of intent like Toyota saying they want Kubica or Kimi.
What you want to do is keep the rumour strong enough so that other teams back off and you get your driver for cheaper.
Remember the talk of the Mercedes Veto. It goes both ways. Mercedes could in theory block McLaren going to BMW, but of course in theory McLaren could block Mercedes from buying Brawn.
I don't think Kimi would bother going anywhere else. Besides, he doesn't need the money
to put it planely. Or they could mutually let each other off the hook.
we (toyota) probably lost "Robert" --> "Renault to annouce Kubica on Tuesday" --> "Kubica - Renault announcement postponed due to unspecified reasons" :-)
Would probably take McLaren a year or so so get the engtine right anyway, by which time the veto is over
Right... But clearly his manager needs to keep the impression that he might go somewhere else alive (hence Red Bull rumours) otherwise McLaren could just say, "we'll give you a fiver".
Exactly.
Would love to hear the reality of these negotiations. Maybe Joe knows.
Hold on. Where did the McLaren - BMW engine thing come from? Or is it just a guess?
rumours have been flying around for a while that Merc and Mc are to sever the ties sooner than later. that of course can only be done if Mc can get hand on decent engine. BMW power is out there for grabs. There comes the base for rumour. Where has it appeared for the first time I can't recall
OK. fair enough.
it's on joe's blog too, IIRC.
Oh, thanks.
I though I'd hurry up the process for Renault
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/kubren-jpg
you do not really need to photoshop, just rewind few years back :-)
2002 Kubica
How has he not changed in 7 years?
Rubens hasn't changed much in 16. ;)
Except for his helmets!
I think he changed but last year he went on diet and back to his 2002 look :-)
here is another one, from Macau:
F1 drivers back in macau in 2005 2006
... check Vettel :-)
Nice plug ;)
I was searching for some old Kubica Renault pics, I remember using one from his test days, but could not find it. The old Macau post came up instead :-)
Morning all
New post: http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/10/06/how-hard-can-it-be/
Morning Jon, how's it going?
I think i have a sleep hangover....i know it can't be drink because i've not had one for 4 days :(
Yourself?
I'm pretty good.
Everyone has to answer Alex's question from earlier:
Who's yours?
Good afternoon. I'm really enjoying my working day being done at this time :D
i only just woke up ;)
hmmm,
my #F1Hero is;
Martin Blabbermouth, because he always cheers me up with his rubbish answers
I don't think Mr C has answered.
Oooh that's a very good question Alex! I'll have to think of a good one.
I can think of at least two :)
Fry up time :D
Back in a jiffy ;)
#F1Hero Mine is very obvious - Mr Barrichello. Although there's plenty of reasons why for me... he's constantly stayed dedicated towards Formula 1 even when he's had some rough times dealing with the loss of Ayrton right at the start of his career, to be stuck under Michael for years at Ferrari and generally for most of his career being stuck in inconsistent cars despite his obvious ability to be a top driver. But everything about him and his career to me as a fan is everything Formula 1 should be about for a driver - a nice guy who loves what he does and whats to strive for success even if challenges stand in the way. You always see a smile of his face, and he always puts 110% into his races, and obviously he's the most experienced driver in Formula 1 so for him to still be here and doing what he loves with a smile on his face and winning races is just mega :)
Special mentions for me as an f1 hero also go to Sir Jackie Stewart, Murray Walker and oddly enough Alex Zanardi although that may be more away from F1 than his involvement in F1...
Does he have an affinity with one and is the other his bff?
Have you read his book?
Which one? Have read Murrays and jackies
Zanardi's
i thought i'd brought my copy with me, but must have left it at home
Ooh, no obviously. Will have to check it out soon.
Right I'm going to go to Central Perk now...
I will be latituding shortly which means you can find out where I am : http://sidepodcast.com/playground/location.php
And you should be able to see my comments here and i'll leave some video on the drop.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Alex-Zanardi-My-Story/dp/184425108X
try and get that one, the pictures are awesome (but not so much the one where you can see part of his leg flying off)
I see, are you trying to convince yourself it's not really outside? :P
Have fun!! You have to have enough fun for both me and Amy as well :)
Will try.
tough call, but i think my #f1hero = david croft. for being the only person in the media who can pronounce sidepodcast with one 't'.
There's only 1 T in Sideposcast!
maurice and hindy both prounounce it: side-poste-cast
Who'd have thunk the words Sidepod and Podcast would be so tricky to combine?
i think maybe it needed hyphenating.
Noooo.
side|pod|cast
:)
The underground isn't great for this experiment ;)
Hehehe I love it though. I see you at St Pauls :D
I think i'm currently poisoning myself
Ooooh oooh oooh Islington! That's where I was born :P
domenicali has got to be taking the mickey with this sentence:
"For sure he will do whatever he can with the team to ensure that he will have a continued story in the future for F1, but things may be different, but for sure we need to expect the job that they have done, so for sure they will be there and fighting for the championship in the future."
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79300
for sure
the polish guy on our course says for sure alot, we all have a rye smile when he says it :D
I'm sure he meant respect and someone misheard.
He has missed some opportunities. I can see two instances of 'for' without 'sure' afterwards. Sloppy.
So you have a polish guy on your course, who says for sure a lot. and sounds like Kubica
And now the Kubica announement has been delayed? I call shenanigans. Bob bell is gonna come hunting your uni down....
he got a sneaky "ensure" in there too though.
hahaha. he lives very close actually, he's a family friend's neighbour!
why has it been delayed?
does this mean EJ was wrong :D?
They were about to sign it all contract wise then they realised it was Jarno Turlli wearing a frankenstein mask
I have dropioed some food :)
I haven't got there yet by the way.
Everything got a bit delayed.
Caught up in the wonder that is Islington?
I asked @NobleF1 via Twitter if he really said it that many times ;)
heh! Not quite. Tube was a bit delayed. Suddenly I was v hungry so had to stop.
Right on the move again
Oh my goodness, there's not more royal mail strikes at the end of this week are there?
GO GO GO
My #F1hero: ...well i have several
Nelson Piquet Junior :D
Mika Hakkinen (for THAT overtake)
Ron Dennis
Ross Brawn
Nigel Mansell
Ted Kravitz
I hope not, i have to send my dad a birthday card
Ooooh I found a list of where and when yesterday. I'll dig it out!
For the past few days drop.io wont let me open any pictures, i can see the thumbnail of them, but when i click nothing happens, and i've tried it on FF and Chrome.
Anyone else had same issues?
http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/content1?catId=500185&mediaId=103700768
whitmarsh is on fire this week:
"Kimi is a fantastic driver, and I like him and know him well. He was with the team for five years. He is quick, he is committed and I think he probably would be very committed to beating Ferrari in the future - knowing him."
so, what he's saying, is kimi just needs a bit of motivation?
http://www.formula1.com/news/headlines/2009/10/10060.html
yup. it's completely broken for us too. having to resort to: http://drop.io/sidepodcast/m
Okay some qik video should be coming up now.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. :(
I heart Mr Blabbermouth.
The queue is enourmous!
@NobleF1 Just done two laps of the Yas Marina circuit in an F1 two-seater with Martin Brundle. Totally, totally, totally awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
woo-hoo. is that for the bbc's show?
Jake suggested that MB and DC were going to do it for the BBC - who knows? I'm just ultra jealous :(
I don't think I'm going to be able to get in :(
A long wait.
I found it kind of amusing that as you went backwards filming down the queue there was the beeping of a truck reversing.
I think they are having a media day with heli tours, car rides an the lot.
I thought Bruno senna was driving the journos round, but perhaps MB was having so much fun he decided to become the taxi driver?
heh!
i want his taxi then ;)
Almost there now!
you have way more patience than me!
where are you going?
Pics on drop
and if drop.io were working, i'd link to them.
The links still work if you open in a new tab, right?
Yeah
Drop.io has been taking ages to finish loading, perhaps their servers are under strain
Good afternoon
Thats what i have been doing, right click an image to open it in a new tab, (just the thumbnail) then i can open all the others on the drop... Its a bit odd
i can't get the links to copy and paste?
more recent tweet: http://twitter.com/dropio/status/4619176404

Alex is on the Friend's set?
i think he may be chandler?
It's sooooooooo cool!
Finally got an invite to a coveted Google product...
Too bad it's for Google Voice!
hehe!
Could Christine BE any more jealous? :)
More pics on drop and more video on qik! On way back now!
Wooooo! I GOT THE JOB!!!!
Woop woop!! :D
You sat on the sofa!!!
Congratulations! :-D
w00t! Congratulations!
wooooooo! congratulations!
Wicked!
Well done
Yay! Well done!
Yaaay. Sidepodlove! :D
Congrats!!
Is this a Friends exhibition in London?
I am going to need that time machine a bit quicker please. I just watched the season final of my favourite show and I'm quite sure I can't wait til June to know what happens next.
Ahh
http://www.thelondonpaper.com/going-out/whats-new/friends-cafe-central-perk-pops-up-in-soho
Which show?
Brilliant! Well done! :)
This one. Someone got shot! I must know who!
I'm so happy! Any excuse to get out of my shop and avoid any real work :P
Apparently they show it here on a minor cable/satellite channel
Never heard of it though
Season 6 is 'in production'
Excellent news, when does it take effect?
When I get back from NZ so ages yet. They want me to get all trained up before I go though. I need to recruit a replacement for myself asap though.
Stay away from the UK remake, it was terrible!
Luckily, I haven't seen that either :)
It's an awesome job though!!! I'm so happy. It's completely what I like. It's all to do with recruitment, training and development. Happy happy happy.
Good for you, do you have to pretend to be a grown-up now?
I've been doing that for a while
and more money so you can afford those three races ;)
Errr yeah unfortunately. Although they said they wanted me to do it because I'm so enthusiastic which worried me a bit..... They obviously haven't seen me at work very much!
That is AWESOME. Training industry is very difficult but very, very rewarding. :)
Feels like my bad throat has turned into a chest infection. Guess that'll happen when you have to wait 2 days for a doctors appointment :(
:( Not good...
That sucks! How does your appointment system work?
I don't feel that bad bu the coughing is quite annoying and I'm probably quite contagious so best to stay at home
I phoned up on Monday and they said the nearest is Wed
Have a spit bucket handy - get rid of the phlegm.
That's terrible service.
Am on it already, is not pleasant
How odd. Sorry I'm a bit of a geek about things like that. My GP at the moment doesn't do appointments. It works like the deli counter, you turn up and wait until there's a slot. Oddly enough it's the best system I've ever seen!!
That's an oversubscribed free health care system for you
Some do that here, it just depends on your GP
mine do that... so much better than an appointment
That's my doctor's system too. Works perfectly fine.
Yeah. Sorry the way people administer things, I find interesting for some reason :P
And they wonder why people are willing to sit in casualty for the hours for the wrong reasons
mine works like yours, I generally have to wait a couple of days. Although I haven't gone to a GP for actually being sick since 1997 or so.
I'm back once again... like the renegade master :)
All the qik is uploaded now!
:)
woohoo!
I am excited that they have the turkey with the hat and glasses. London has cool stuff! I think they should make it permanent :(
Did you have a strangely named coffee?
If you're going to make appointments, it's important to leave a couple of doctors in your practice unbookable so that people can ring up on the day with more "emergency" type problems. How many should depend on the size of your practice. If they're free in the day, they can take some of the burden from those with booked appointments.
I've not even been to this GP before, last two times I've been has been to get jabs for travelling
Can't even remember the last time I went cos I was actually sick
I just knew this one wasn't going away after a weekend of Ibuprofen
I would be surprised if they had enough GPs to do that here. Some practises are refusing new patients on their books
We swapped cos the previous one was terrible
Yes something called an espresso ;)
I ordered it on one of the videos.
Ah, go faster juice
Ours... Just up the road but presumably in a different borough allows you to book online but they only offer slots for the single day.
Well done! now if you could rub some of that employability on to me...
They should do.... There aren't really big GP recruitment issues nationwide. The way applications work shouldn't leave gaps, particularly not at a trainee level.
The main problem is that it's more profitable to run a practice in an area with good quality of health which is precisely where it isn't needed. It's diminishing returns to run your practice in an area where people actually need it!
This place has been like a baby factory the last couple of years, I'm sure that's related
:D My CV isn't awesome but once people work with me, they're keen to do so again. I think that's the key. You never know when it's gonna be useful to you to go back somewhere or get in touch with old employers.
Geez. I can't go anywhere nowadays and not hear about healthcare! :)
Is the temp scene still quiet?
It's the season I guess
So, no Renault announcement then?
is Lukeh around. muse news (hey he probably knows) but not that interesting probably to most people unless you know fox news in the USA. but there is an acoustic version of plugin baby. go here
Heeeehehehehe, I've seen the video. Muse management contacted Glenn beck before the show ends to demand he withdraws the praise he gave them because they don't agree with his views politically and whatnot. He's an idiot anyways.
nice work on the job front Alison. I guess it was the advice about not wearing the clothes in the shower that got you over the line.
100% agreement.
Scratch that, just found out he was lying about Muse's management contacting him. That backs up my point of him being a moron.
For sure.
Nice version, I liked Muse back then
what made you unlike them?
Over progged
with advice like that, I can see an advice column starting up.
really? so he was trying to make himself cool. somehow?
Odd. max vatanen wants to speak to me.
I understand that. Fortunately it didn't happen to me.
Scary hybrid?
His son
Not brilliant
one of the new Transformers of 2009
Guess they are giving what little work there is to their favourites
Cool, ask him what we can do to help bring the Max/Todt thing crumbling to it's knees :)
Why would they do that?
He liked there music so where's the problem? I have no idea who he is, but i dont see why he cant have an opinion?
why do they have to drag politics into everything? Really bad i didnt buy there album now if they are going to be that childish.
They didn't... read my follow up comment
Why would they do that? Sounds like they made a silly mistake and now there agents are tring to cover lost sales...
Well do it!
Twitter?
Facebook
Don't throw any sheep at him just yet
First healthcare, now Glenn Beck! grrrrrrr! :)
Welcome to America! :D
I took a wrong turn on my commute home....?
Max is talking about contacting the guys at Radio Le Mans to spread the Ari Vatanen video I made about. Oooh.
I hate it when that happens, apparently I ended up in Melbourne the other day
Coolness
They dont really care about the FIA or F1 though?
They're running the group supporting him on FB
Maybe they just dislike Max & Toad
Max as in Max Mosley?
Max Vatanen
Hah, I've been here my entire life! :D
can someone go to this for me? TWO FINNS.
Whoa.
I did that once, I don't know how to get out! ;)
I saw that and really want to go...
really annoying
Heikki will still be there by then? Not a good sign
You can't make it?
its only a week after the last race :D
In Dubai. Its so close to me aswell
Why? I wouldn't be surprised to see Fernonso doing PR for Renault up until about Christmas?
I suppose new contracts start on Jan 1st, stil...
but Vodafone McClaren Mercedes will be there! ;)
Oh, so you're going ut there anyway. The race is a huge bonus if you get tickets?
I have a meeting out there, i am meeting my dad out there, and the GP was on at the same time.
I thought it was all going to pan out perfectly, then someone decided to put a load of silly music perfomances on at the circuit and i cant go :(
So it's improved ticket sales?
Have the GA tickets sold out then?
and thus we learn that booking early is not a bad thing ;)
Can someone point lou to this comment when she arrives...(and to anyone else interested)
Just been reading "Sponsorship News", it's a sponsorship journal. Not sure if this has been mensioned....
"Brawn GP has confirmed the agreement of a special one-race partnership with Brazilian brewing company Cervejaria Petrópolis for the 2009 Brazilian Grand Prix to be held at the Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo on 18 october.
The Brazilian Grand Prix will bring a global audience ot Cervejaria Petrópolis who currently have a presence in every main racing category in Brazil including Stock CAr, Copa Vicar, Stock Jr, Formula Truck and the Itaipva GT Brazil events of GT3, Trofeo Maserati and Copa Renault Clio"...
...."Nick Fry, Cheif Executive Officer at Brawn GP said; 'Brawn GP is delighted to welcome Cervejaria Petrópolis and their Itaipava brand to the team and to Formula One for the very first time. The Brazilian Grand Prix is always a great event with a fantastic atmosphere and we are very proud ot be associated with a prestigious Brazilian company for their home race. Our new partnership should prove to be very exciting as teh season and teh battle for the championship reaches its climax'
There arent any...
Huh? Well that's epic fail on their behalf.
It was mentioned around the same time as Canon, i think.
you mean i just typed all that out for nothing? dang
Abu Dhabi doesn't do GA? Given who live there, I'm not surprised.
awww :)
Yes, but there are going to be a lot of non f1 fans there just along for the music.
I can see why they would do all this for the 2nd and third years, but it seems unnececary for the first year.
Especially when it means motorsport fans loose the chance to go because of Aerosmith and queens of Leon fans want to have a sing-along, with no interest of watching the race at all.
One of my friends grew up out there. There is quite a large ex-pat community. I'd have thought there's a market for reasonably priced tickets!
Its a street circuit, what would you be able to see? all the cars will be beneth the concrete barriers?
But they won't be watching the bands from their seats, will they?
That's silly
Nothing wrong with Kings of Leon though
they'll drop by the race, see what it's like. who knows, some of them might stick around... ;)
good thing i didnt write it aalll out
You need a race ticket to get access to the concerts. its a good deal, but its quite disappointing for me.
And empty on Friday & Saturday
big news, or not so much?
"The Ferrari team has announced that Luca Marmorini will replace Gilles Simon as head of the engine and electronics department."
"Marmorini returns to Ferrari after having worked for Toyota for ten years. The 48-year-old Italian left the Japanese squad in January this year."
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79306
That's ridiculous
Thanks Bernie
no different from any other circuit nowadays to be honest...
Meh?
My first thought was, who?
my first thought, was... toyota don't appear to have many staff left.
Gilles Simon was brought along by Todt when he left Peugeot for Ferrari.
So the Italianization continues then... Marmorini's Toyota engines haven't exactly been impressive though. Where's Paolo Martinelli when you need him...?
It will be good to keep the crowds up in the furutre, but this is the first year, its so unnecessary.
This whole F1 rocks thing looks to be an absoloute disaster. First holding it at the same time as the race in singapore, and now this...
I thought for a second it meant Toyota were pulling out but now I see he left there in January. I vote "meh"
I read that earlier and though.....the tennis player?
Wasn't F1 Rocks held AFTER the racing finished? The only downside to it was that it was a bit far from Marina Bay.
:D
That hasn't worked out so well in the past has it?
Be careful Rob, start looking for a job now
but you can't really blame the concert for you missing out on tickets, you've been talking about buying some for ages
Martinelli was excellent before - and he's Italian. He went to the roadcars after Schumi retired...
I mean, going very Italian
I thought F1 Rocks finished on Saturday.
Their modern success had a lot of British influence didn't it?
it did
Global, really. Brawn's a Brit. Bryne's a South African. Todt's French. Schumi's German. Martinelli's Italian. Dyer's an Aussie(?). A bit of everything...
ooh, more bands are playing in abu dhabi? who haven't i heard of this time?
Ok I just got a lot more serious about this Youtube thing with Vatanen. It has this on his website concerning Youtube support videos...
3. The winner of the competition is the one who makes the video which gets the most views until the election day.
4. The prize for winner:
• one of my personal rally items
• and one ticket for Monaco Grand Prix
• and an Expresso with me at Cafe de Paris, Monaco (I´ll pay...)
I didnt know if i would be able to go out there when the race was on, my meeting was supposed to be towards the end of November, before everything fell into place they had annonced the concerts. I could have gambled on tickets, but there seemed to be enough left.
Its my own fault, but i wouldnt mind so much if it was f1 being so popular that caused me to miss out, its just some music fans who will have minimal if any interest in the track and who might not even go.
Whoo go for it!
Sounds like an expensive concert to me
I thought your YouTube account was suspended?
Aerosmith, kings of leon, beyonce, Timberlands
I want to know who is doing Melbourne, the promo I just got sent said "in the last two years we have had Kiss and The Who and 2010 will be even better" and I will hold them to that.
Some King called Leon, I think
It is, hence why I'm making a new account now
Not too bad.... 5 or 6 major acts for that price in the UAE is pretty reasonable
Can't get any worse can it?
You cant get better than KISS... its all downhill from there!
Muse are touring Australia early next year so... who knows ;)
I liked both of them :(
ahh they're doing the Big Day Out though
Did I mention you won't be choosing the music on the road trip? ;)
Powderfinger! There's a name I haven't heard in AGES!
last.fm says our music compatibility is very high but that appears to be solely from podcasts because when I look at your 'most played' list I haven't even heard of most of them and the ones I have heard of I can probably only name one song by :D
Is the music actually part of F1 Rocks? All I can find about it is some company called Flash Entertainment and this sentence:
The Yasalam After-Race concerts on Yas Island are part of a wider programme of events which have been announced under the Yasalam (Arabic for amazing) banner.
The F1 Rocks site seems permanently focused on Singapore.
I loooove Powderfinger, they did a free gig in Melbourne the other day that they announced on Twitter and I couldn't go because of stupid work :(
It'll be an education then ;)
I don't think it is, I think it's like the shows they do in Melbourne which are solely organised to get more people in the door by the race promoters. F1 Rocks said they would be "back next year" on the TV show.
Ah maybe not then.
still as annoying!
i have heard of the Arctic Monkeys but if you offered me $1,000,000 right now to name one of their songs I would fail.
Cool. Just wanted to make sure we had our facts straight.
F1 Rocks = didn't clash with the race, and isn't responsible for Abu Dhabi ticket sales.
Lucky you!
I get WAY more obscure than that :)
I bet you look good on the dancefloor....
thanks very much :)
oh I know that one. Didn't have a clue who sung it.
is it rude to spend a whole roadtrip with my mp3 player on? ;)
With a $1M, who wouldn't?
:D:D
I should hope so. Surely almost everyone can. They had the fastest selling album in this country ever. It's hardly obscure....
Well, I'll let you have some input, we may need a pre-trip clearance list
It didnt clash?
That makes a lot more sense!
It did a bit with quali but not with the race no.
I still listen to the music I liked 10 years ago and when I listen to the radio its a 'classic rock' station so I don't hear new music, ever. :D
I listen to podcasts. NEVER listen to the radio anymore. I listen to music occassionally, but it's all stuff I have.
I don't have an awful lot of new stuff, just a few select groups
looks like there are still single tickets left in one section of one grandstand. You can still go if you are determined, and have AED1,900!
I'm googling and youtubing and it all sounds like the type of music I don't like. Hoooray for roadtrips! ;)
I do!
but when you click through it says sold out..
Podcasts all the way then!
Apparently 'the wailers' and 'soul II soul will be 'giging it' too
How do the Wailers like their doughnuts?
Wi' Jammin'
oh boo :(
I think I should frab some lunch before dinner time arrives
err, *grab
and I think I should sleep before the sun arrives, goodnight all!
Its like they are mocking me with that bit of the website ;(
Bernie is selling a seat in the main grandstasand for £470, but thats way to much for me on top of car rental and kangaroo
night amy.
night!
ahh, if only you had the iphone app. you don't need kanga...
Night!
It would cost me about £120 to get a data signal there so it would be useless.
Unless they had wifi, when it could work, but i doubt they would, wifi hotopts only seem to exist at the airport....
Hey. Whitmarsh is beginning to worry me about BMW.
G'night Amy
Thats wrong, you can now get a months service, previously you had to buy 6 months miniumum.
however, since the iphone is not sold unlocked here yet, it wouldnt work anyways ;) (without epic roaming charges)
They want their Engine plant
Hey RG
They could get it anyway, its not owned by qadbak, they want to use ferraris.
I think McLaren just want the IP, then build it in the UK
Could this mean an all McLaren car? No Mercedes engine?
Yup. It's a matter of when, not if, I think.
Their new road car is all McLaren
I didn't know that. I only heard it wasn't powered by Mercedes.
It's badged as a McLaren engine, no word on who actually built it yet
Hello all, just catching up - Well Done to Alison for getting the job .
I see Alex has been to Central Perk but we also have some spam on the drop.
Not sure about the new Dr Who logo, perhaps it will grow on me.
Who put the "Five beautiful porcelain pigs" on the drop yesterday?
I think that's everything so far ;)
according to this article: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=156926
It's a partnership between McLaren and Ricardo (whom I've never heard of)
Thankyou :)
I'm also responsible for the pigs indirectly :P I was talking about making a piggy bank from papier mache. Someone showed me their piggy bank collection. I don't remember who.... The crafts have had to take a rain check unfortunately!
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2008/12/05/cosworth-xtrac-and-ricardo/
They have a good pedigree it seems. Historically involved in Aero Engine technology but also noteworthy road & race projects:
"transmissions and engines for motor sport and speed records, notably the consistently-successful Audi 24 Hours of Le Mans team, the JCB Dieselmax diesel land speed record holder,[1] and the DSG-type gearbox of the Bugatti Veyron."
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricardo_Consulting_Engineers
yesterday sidepodcomments stole my evening, so tonight i'm going cold turkey ;)
catch ya all tomorrow.
see ya!
See ya Mr C
meeee... Alison was making a piggy bank... How did that go?
Night ;)
It errr didn't. I'm gonna go for it this week sometime though. I need to get my sister round. Drunken craftwork seems like the best idea in the world! :)
Watching the BBC News, it's going to be a six month build-up to the election isn't it? :(
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey :D
They are slowly turning British elections into proper ones like in the US, am very excited
You might be in the minority Jon
Though I like the idea of candidate debates. In practice it'll just be an exercise in spin
Alex's comment from earlier
My #F1Hero is Sir Frank Williams. He's dealt with a lot in his life but still runs a team that, whilst it may not be the most successful of late, is not just there to back up their other businesses (like selling road cars) but is there because they just want to go racing. I know he can be a bit of an outsider in the paddock but I like that about him as it's nice not to have someone who is just there to be corporate about their decisions all the time.
It's a start
So you want your elections to grow to be 2+ years long? ;)
I totally agree
I'll always root for Williams to do well, even if they're not my favourite
I don't think this is right in our electoral system. They are not candidates because we are not electing a prime minister (or pseudo-president). We are supposed to vote for a party and their policies, not an individual
I love the US elections, 2 years is a bit extreme i agree, but atleast people get involved in the elections
How would you get people involved in caring about politics then?
The party leader is representing the manifesto though
I just watched an epsiode of Friends and when they were in Central Perk I couldn't help but think... I've been there!
Anyone who wants to become a politician should be banned from politics
I realise my stance is a little flawed though :)
I always liked Coupling much more than I ever liked Friends.
Show off :P
You just reminded me of another great feature of HIMYM... the bar they go to drink at is called McLaren's!
Just a tad ;)
I don't care about the people doing the poltic-ing, but what about joe-public?
I really like Coupling too. And Steven Moffat which is why I am very exciting about the new season of Doctor Who.
yes sorry.
If there wasn't so much bull involved then maybe people would care a little more. The Commons is ridiculous
We aren't unique in that aspect though
Eurgh. Please don't mess with our electoral system. I got annoyed enough when everyone was insisting Gordon had no mandate. He obviously did as the system is for each region to elect their own MP. Members of each party choose their own leader from those elected. If you're voting for the PM, that's where you're going wrong. Rant over.
Have you watched how i met your mother... one of the main characters is a bit like you...
He wont be seen out of a suit in public :P
Political parties are fundementaly unconstitutional.
Agreed
Why do you not think we should elect a PM?
In theory of course you are supposed to be voting for your local MP and that's it. We aren't supposed to have control of what happens nationally which is why what actually happens is so confused.
The British system has always been party based but recently there has been so much emphasis on the US that our PM is made to seem like a President when they are not. There is no problem with members of the party or even the party leaders having a debate so long as it does not make the election about the individual. For example. I may not like David Cameron per se but I may think that the Conservative manifesto contains the most policies that I agree with so I would choose to vote Conservative. Jon's comment illustrates what I think is wrong with the way the media portrays our politics. They should be telling us what each party represents not what David Cameron had for breakfast or whether Gordon Brown has had a row with Sarah. I'm not sure I've made my point well but I've typed enough now
You should vote for the party. If you care enough about who should lead a particular party, join it and get your say that way.
I don't care what either had for breakfast or if they had a row, i care that people just don't go around thinking that we don't make a difference in elections, that their vote dosent count. I got excited because Gordon Brown has agreed to have a debate with the other 2 leaders, which never happened under Blair
Because we have a head of state who is the Queen and we do not need a Presidential figure.
PM doesn't have the power of Veto does he?
Because Mr C and Christine aren't here can I please vote that we stop talking politics as it really is a very inflaming issue.
Just my two cents. Cheers.
I agree wholeheartedly that everyone should vote and that each vote is important. What I'm trying to say is that it's not about the PM it's about the party
Good point Alex
Agreed..
In addition, the party can choose to oust him and vote someone else in without explaining their actions to you or anyone else. You don't get to decide.
I am fully aware of this
So (playing DA here) it's not that much of a democratic society if i only get to choose 1 person of 600?
So, what have Williams tried to veto today? :)
Meh. It's just the way it works. This isn't a political issue, it's constitutional. You should decide what's important to you in your local area and elect your local MP accordinly.
We want something LESS contentious than British politics :)
Good evening
But thats my point, i'm happy with the current local guy, but what happens if the local guy is from the party who nationally i dont want to vote for. It just makes it a stupid system
Welcome to Thunderdome!
I understand your point, how would you improve it?
Well i'd make it atleast a primary system for the leader of each party i guess.
In my opinion, if they're doing good work in your local area then it's just something abstractly ideological that's stopping you voting for them. On balance, you're probably better off keeping your local champion. That said, they probably hold a lot of the views that their party leadership do and that's something you have to weigh up for yourself. You're never going to find someone to vote for that agrees with you on every count. You need to prioritise your needs and vote accordingly. Failing that, stand for election or, if you really can't decide on someone, go along and void your ballot.
Jon, Alison and Janna. Please. Stop.
Kthxbye
:)
What about BMW & Quad Bike?
Seems to be concerns that BMW haven't done a good job with he due diligence process
No problem
Hello to you too? No need to be rude.
Sounds like we sold the team to the first offer near the expected amount.
But thats not always true, my local guy is a conservative and does great work, but my brother is labour but loves the local guy. Labour and Conservative views nationally are different, so how does he vote? I know your point, it's just a silly system
Definitely no politics.
And thanks Alex for being our stand in.
He was refering to the point that politics is a risky topic to talk about, and its not wished to talk about it. He mentioned about it earlier
We're not fighting about it, we're having a debate, not sure what the difference between this and some of the arguments about other topics that have been had in the past
Whats risky about it?
He did suggest earlier that it may not be appropriate
That's settled then
Congrats!
Its said somewhere around the site not to talk about it.
I'm not trying to be rude. I did ask a bit earlier with a please in it.
Not the best idea or even legal sometimes
I like this from Massa: "I perfectly remember how to drive. My worry isn't to immediately get a good laptime, but just to run again. In any case you need a good car and a good set-up."
Already talking about good setup.
ahh, not good, hope it improves... or not if you'd rather have the week off ;-)
Good to see him back in his Ferrari stuff :)
He's pre-emoting the talk that he may not be ready
Personally, I hope he waits until the new season
I agree, and I think he probably will. I bet he can't wait, though.
This isn't the best week to be sick. Too much stuff to do, away from 'the day job'. Side-projects and stuff
Will probably have to email some stuff in
No doubt he'll be at Sao Paulo to spectate, to standing ovations probably
I need help....
Me and someone else on 9th November are going to partake in the University jail break....
48 hours, no money, see how far you can get...
Last years winners got to Tel-a-viv, and it says on the website that Waricks winners a few years ago got to canada....
Any ideas? I'm thinking of emailing different international haulage firms to see if i can ride with them. Any other ideas?
Courier flights. Especially to the states. Personally escorting documents usually to the other side
oooh, thats a good idea. will have a look ta
No Twitter announcements of forthcoming news today?
DO IT
Radio Lukeh, live from Monaco :)
This is something I cannot imagine... although I think the new Radio2 changes might swing me over finally.
I used to be up to date with the music scene. It gets harder when mortgages and life get in the way :)
It got harder when the method for following it fractured into so many different sources instead of just listening to the Evening Session on R1 (which I did all too rarely anyway). The plus side is anyone can listen to whatever they want, and instead of one genre being cool and trendy it is seen as cool to have a varied taste.
What day is loeb testing?
It is easier to discover new stuff now. I remember when most of my info came from The NME
Back when Xfm wasn't owned by a big commercial station
I was lucky enough to live on Charlotte Street when XFM was independent. So it was my very very local station.
Ah, the good ol' days :)
We've never had access to Xfm. My sister who lived in London for a few years kept raving about it. I know you can get it online, but it takes effort to start the habit and learn the shows.
Not sure if it is on Freeview... it isn't on our cut down version and I haven't managed to save up for DAB yet..
It's too commercial these days for my tastes but still better than daytime Radio 1
All I'll say is that it can get very messy very quickly. I could tell you were being careful, but it doesn't take much to be a catalyst.. so just better to avoid.
Daytime Radio 1 has always been bad, it is the specialist stuff that makes it.
Oh yeah, renting news.
After being turned down for the flat I wanted, I found another one and they have accepted! I have to decide a start date and then I'm in!
yeeyyyy
Madness!
That's great news :)
Are you allowed to use money to get back?
Why is the NBA in London tonight?
Good news
Bet your landlord is gutted, wonder if he'll still get the rent increase from the next tenants
Pre-season at the O2
Live here, http://www.bbc.co.uk/5live/sport/
Evening all
He seemed to be a mixture of disappointed and relieved.. He turned 86 last weekend and tbh while he'll miss the money he'll probably be as glad the inconvenience is gone as much as I am.
Also on Freeview 302
Big promo at The O2
Kinda like NFL matches over here I guess
Ooh, really?
A friend of mine got a flight from Australia to Lonfon to carry a package that Fed Ex etc couldn't deliver fast enough. She was allowed to inspect the contents before the package was sealed.
evening
Try the Air Force to see if they will fly you to the Falklands
I have seen a grand total of one NBA game before, when it was carried on BBC1 for some reason. Post 9/11 charity thing I think.
Hi Steven
Mention that you'll need to come home too
0 for me. But quite a few Eagles games, it helps they are actually good at it.
Well done Alison
(i'm not here)
to be honest, to me the biggest issue is timing. rather than the subject matter.
i think alex was on the right track kicking the day off with a fun game. sidepodcast should be a chilled out, fun and relaxing place to hang out. yesterday i found the place really, really stressful.
so to kick off less than 24 hours later on the heavy subject of politics is probably not a smart idea. although i did laugh at bassano's:
...given our comments yesterday about discussing events that won't be happening anytime soon.
how about we have a rule that heavy subjects can only be discussed on the back of lighter subjects like i-spy or something? i dunno. i am +1 for please no politics today. and i'm not even here.
be funny, have fun, enjoy. and i'm gone again.
Yeah, sorry. That didn't help. I didn't mean to kick something off, was a throwaway comment
Agreed about light subject matter for the most part though
Like getting Jon to Antarctica :)
she's not having one (i don't care how white, soft and fluffy they appear on tv).
What's with this 4:3 picture of the Basketball?
Is it 1998 again?
Well 5Live are completely messing up this commentary :-)
Who's commentating.
Go Lukeh. FIA still have influence over sportscars it;s just not high profile enough for them to take the level of interest they do in F1. Anything that gives Ari a platform is good and if Lukeh's talent gets a bigger audience that's good to.
Aren't they in The Arctic?
Still,
I have no idea.
They keep throwing across to Colin Murray who is sat at one end of the court.. he's terrible at this, and they missed the start of the game because he was talking to Dara O'Briain.. and I like Colin!
Wrong pole. Antarctica is penguins
Who's he passing to? Is that a point?
I would quite like one of those as well, though.
ahh. well not these either then: http://www.coolantarctica.com/gallery/seals/antarctica_seals1.htm
argh, the celebrity endorsements.. talk about the GAME..
Are they talking to Ali G?
Speaking of Colin Murray, I heard that Fighting Talk tried to do a all Motorsport related show last season.
I don't want one of those.
Aah, JLS
Same thing
At least he didn't say no penguins
:D :D
Potentially. I wonder where he is going. Who do we know with a big budget that needs a top engine guy to design a new engine or one based on the BMW engine IP?
If you guys don't listen to the Onions 1-minute daily podcasts, you should. There most recent one is relevant to this conversation :)
http://feeds.theonion.com/theonion/radionews
"We nearly ran out of giraffe casserole"
Yes that's how I felt, and I am sorry if I was terse but I was on the iPhone with a low signal.
It's finally dawned on me who legard looks like... John Lithgow
Evening!
What a time to join the conversation!
Evening all, I bring a new story from Orange. Make of it what you will:
YES!
Only less fun
Do you really think there is any substance to the rumuoured Macca BMW wheeling and dealing? Denial means nothing - how many times did Alonso say he had not contract with Ferrari?
Toyota, Renault, That lot, all rumours at the minute.
Kimi to Toyota, career suicide. Can't see it
As for Sauber, they haven't even go a grid slot yet!
Never made the connection before but Legard looks like Dick.
Who makes a decision on a driver based on one error more or less?
It's truly awful. James Allen would be better
One mistake in what, 15 odd races. There's been a lot better drivers done more than that.
Do you think Nick and Timo are worth only a "bucket" in a team without an official grid slot?
I think Quad Bike are only in it for the investment. Strip the company of it's assets when things pick up
I hope I'm wrong
We know McLaren is looking to establish an engine operation and if they can pick up all the IP from a current engine that will save them a fortune.so I am sure they woud be interested as they would if Toyota or Renault pulled out. The attraction of Gilles Simon is that he will have a headful of data on th Ferrari engine and the planned developments so merging the two should give them an instantly competitive engine.
Lewis has made three mistakes this year that costs significant points - one might have been under team guidance? How many mistakes has Sutil made? If I see Sutil he is inevitably making a mistake. Timo and Nick are two of the most error-free drivers. I think it is very honest that Timo said I made a mistake I was looking at my display.
I honestly think BMW just sold it to the first company with money.
Kimi will go to McLaren. Nothing else makes sense
GRRR Tweetdeck GRRR
I changed my Twitter Password and I can't change it in Tweetdeck - even after logging off and on, reinstalling etc :(
I think you're right
They were only interest in getting out without losing much investment. I am sure they would sell their engine IP as well. Probably not a bad engine, although their KERS was a failure. Apparently the KERS that Mercedes uses was developed by Zytec - so no wonder it is so awesome.
Good point, but are relationships that strained between Macca and Mercedes?
I stopped using it on the iPhone. Have heard of similar password issues from others
May be easier to uninstall and start again
Or leave the sport :(
Tried that :(
Have you tried this? http://genesisblogging.com/2009/08/fix-for-when-you-cant-change-your-password-in-tweetdeck/
You can't change it in Settings -> Accounts? I have a field for it in mine, on OS X
Mercedes want more control, McLaren won'tlet them. Hence, Brawn Mercedes talk
That is how I have read it - he wants a winning team - he does not want to go to a team and try to bring it up. Possibly that is why Ferrari wanted Alonso over Kimi!
If this is the case I really wonder if the second driver which Mercedes desperately wanted to go to Nico became an issue.
Yeah, 2 or 3 times :(
Good advice, thanks Kathi
McLaren launched their new roadcar with their own rather than a Merc engine just a few days before Merc launched their competing car. Mer have bought a controlling stake in Brawn to launch their own team so relations are screwed.
Never going to happen. The guy is a racer
My iPhone app kept omitting tweets, I believe it's a great but flawed interface
I mean leave F1, not motorsport
Is it known who actually developed the new McLaren engine? I have to say the Merc and the McLaren do not seem to be head on competitors.
but he could be weaned onto Rallying - it is the blood of every Finnish motorsport enthusiast.
Ot was mentioned earlier. Ricardo
hehe, we were talking about that an hour or so ago :). McLaren partnered with Ricardo
Thanks
Rallying is awesome. Those drivers are a special kind of crazy.
They will be in the supercar market
Do those instructions only work on a Mac? There's no edit button when I click on accounts.
I have tried the instructions in that link 2 or 3 times and they don't work :(
To go where? He is not going to get a competitive rally car for obvious reasons and he is not going to do IRL or NASCAR as he would have to do ally the happy clappy sponsor list interviews.
Can you add an account?
I don't know anything about the Merc that was launched but I have read a couple of articles saying Mercedes were not happy about the timing of the McLaren launch as they saw the McLaren as a competing car.
Nope, won't accept the password. Stupid program :(
McLaren looks more of a real supercar (looks Ferrari like) whereas the Merc seems like a plush super sports car.
I have no taste so I like the Lotus Evora and the IFR Aspid.
Thanks - in that is hidden a wealth of meaning!
But it would be a fresh challenge
I think we'll see him back at Woking
try a different one? lifehacker had a poll about twitter clients recently. Maybe there is one that suits you: http://lifehacker.com/5368817/five-best-twitter-clients
Have a look at this one from Orange as well:
In he £150k plus field, their after similar wallets
I think it is possible, but he does have quite a bit to lose (he will the second driver and therefore needs to be better than Lewis to keep his reputation) and I think the fresh challenge of doing something different will have huge appeal.
Where are Orange gettng this news? Sounds full of speculation
No-one is going to give him a competitive rally car because he has no experience. A dew rallies in a FIAT is not suitable preparation for a championship assault in a top line team.
Kimi is an F1 driver and until F1 is out of his system that is what he will remain. I don't see him as a Stephane Sarrazin who will do F1, sportscars and rallying. He may dabble in other forms of the sport but F1 will be his focus for a while yet. If I was in his place I would be doing everything I could to make sure Ferrari had to pay me a fat bonus next year for taking the championship from them.
I still see them as slightly different - the McLaren is clearly aiming to take sales away from Ferrari and Lamborghini.
The McLaren does look REAL nice.
That would be a stupid move. They know he is not good enough so they may as well sign someone else and try them. At least then there is a chance they will get someone who can push Lewis
Thanks Kathi - which ones can I have groups with?
I think they will be evenly matched. All the top drivers are comvinced they are the best so I don't think Lewis will figure in his thinking. If he leaes F1 now he is going to spend the rest of his life answering questions about why Ferrari dumped him and paid him not to race and why he walked away from F1 like that rather than fought to prove they had made a mistake.
To me nice but not hugely original in styling - nothing like the impact the McLaren F1 had. Gordon Murray has also said as much - slightly disappointing. In the are where I live there is a Koenigsegg CCX - that is exciting looking car.
"Powered by Panet F1"
That's what I thought
Seesmic desktop does groups as well, but I moved away from it because it didn't sync my groups between multiple machines.
I don't know :( I don't use any clients. Ask google?
It kinda reminds me of an R8, but not as harsh in terms of styling.
Love the look of the Koenigsegg as well
And he's openly admitted the best car he ever drove was a McLaren
Ferrari dumped him due to his lack of popularity with the Tifosi and Alonso was available. Personally I think it is a silly reason - Alonso to me spells trouble and very high maintenance. He is not that good a driver to be worth it all.
I think he is but agree that he may be high maintenance
I am not a great fan of R8 from looks but yea there is soe similarity - I think it R8 is probably a really good car but not its looks.
My dad drove an R8 V10 at Snetterton last Thursday. He quoted it as "mind-blowing" :D
Alonso in the Ferrari of the early part of this decade would have been OK but with the current Ferrari team I can see the whole thing imploding spectacularly and him leaving before th end of his contract.
I like the basic look of the R8 but I don't understand the stupid panel behind the door in a contrast colour. That just makes it look plasticky
Sorry but his handling of the Singapore victory has really cheapened his race track success for me. He is not honest either, but then neither is Nico which surprised me - I thought better of him.
You think Nico was lying?
Do not like its fairy lights - neat styling is trashed with terrible design details.
LED lights are gaining popularity, they can be done in better ways than that though
of course - he is not stupid - any drivers knows within a couple of tenths how fast their lap speeds are without the need for digital displays. Williams gambled with the organisers that they would not penalise so that Brawn won the championship under a penalty as fans do not like this. A great and brave psychological victory - but then I thought Renault's fixing was brilliant strategically.
Lotus has LED lights and it looks great - but as I said the Evora and Exige are to me great looking cars!
But he did back-off under the safety car, wasn't that already established?
I think everyone agreed there was NO backing off of speed. He was significantly faster than any other driver during the period.
I'd love a Series 1 Elise
That wasn't the impession I got
Regardless, expecting transparency from the stewards is nigh on a pipe dream
Funnily enough, I am just blogging about this!
you see I like the latter Elise and the Exige - sure it has almost comically enhanced bulges - its styling that is a bit over the top but that what I like. Now I really like the ASPID - its not beautiful (in any conventional sense) but it is an awesome car (just the headlights which are terrible).
Please link when done Gavin, I'd like to see that
Gavin's analysis like the Lewis incident at Valencia will really reveal a lot more.
Caterham inspired front, Megane rear
Fugliness incarnate :)
Might not be today though...
On second thoughts, that's very unfair to Caterham
Dodge Prowler?
He went through the sector too fast. He slowed down a bit but not enough. He should have been penalised
Cool, no doubt I'll see it soon
The Caterham is just a Lotus 7 - but it has attitude! Should now realise I just like Lotus and their offspring! My dream car would be the original Lotus Europa.
Caterham was originally a Lotus though
That's not what the stewards' report said
I know, I retracted that bit
I quite like that too!
I wouldn't mind a Caterham... or an Ariel Atom...
Eek!
The Bread Van :)
Caterham 500, just before Catalysts were mandatory
I know it was never as fashionable as the Elan but I always like the Europa
I'd be happy with a TVR Griffith that didn't break down
Yes, I'm a dreamer
Stewards wording could be interpreted in a variety of ways - they were cheating and got away with it. All's fair in racing - I just do not like statements like Nico said afterwards I slowed down blah blah blah (ly my omission rather than commission) - it is as much lying as what Lewis did at Australia and Piquet did (after his crash) when he said he made a mistake.
Just checking through today's wiki updates and I had no idea there had been so many guest posts.
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Guest+Posts
see it got a reaction - that is part of good design to challenge our perceptions. The new McLaren in terms of outward design does not challenge.
They make the most awesome sound that any car can make....just they break down, a lot.
And all of them brilliant.
Speaking of which, can anyone supply mew with the actual quote from Nico?
I know, a colleague had a Cerbera. Many engine problems
At least the Griffith had the old Chrysler/Range Rover lump
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79259
You sound like you would like more
more please...
Always!
they broke the modesty mould when they made simon:

NASA TV are putting out a live hour and a half program on Friday at 6:15am Eastern / 11:15am UK to cover the LCROSS mission impacting part of its spacecraft into a crater in the moon in the hope of detecting water.
The link provides details of the coverage available. I have no idea if this will be interesting or boring as mince but it could be worth following.
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/LCROSS/main/index.html
I thought you said you weren't going to be on tonight?
Gah!
The Daily Mail AND Simon Cowell :D
:)
Shall we make guesses now as to when they'll lose radio contact?
mmmmm. i have serious addiction issues.
Did you hear about the party with alphabetti spaghetti only containing the letters s-i-m-o-n-c-w-e-l?
Put a pic up on drop.io just for you to enjoy - I had not previously noticed how similar it was to the ASPID - that is why I liked it.
Alex!
Come back, all is forgiven ;)
I saw that. Enjoy, you say?
How's the new pad?
They have a feed from a giant telescope on Hawaii so they should be able to get guaranteed pictured from there unless it is cloudy
Lolz
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/umm-jpg
Aw. I'll drag Mr C away from the doohickey again.
Also like the Morgan Aeromax
Catching up on films, pehaps?
I applaud the styling but not much of a fan in general. Gorgeous from some angles though
http://talkmorgan.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/morgan-aeromax-3.jpg
One of the Backstreet Boys has swine flu.
I bet this is what half the paddock have been struggling with this weekend as well.
Maybe that's what I have
I'm too South London for Man Flu ;)
The original design though was really awesome so its style got a little lots in translation see http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/morgan-aeromax-jpg
Always the way unfortunately
I love that car.
Good evening everyone, i see people were avidly discussing politics, good job i jumped out before the naughty step was rolled out :P
Now for the ugliest Supercar ever had to be the Renault Alpine A310
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/renault-alpine-a310-jpg
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/renault-alpine-a310-jpg
That's a bad example, the later versions I liked
I think you and I have polar opposite tastes ;)
No we weren't
[deny everything Baldrick]
It looks a bit like a DeLorean. I like DeLoreans.
I also see that Joe thinks my idea of NASCAR buying F1 from CVC is a good one :D http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/10/05/some-random-thoughts-from-an-f1-notebook/
*Hey stop throwing stuff at me!*
The original was lovely too
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9a/Renault_Alpine_A110_Berlinette_1600_SX.jpg
Stop giving people ideas involving TRASHCAR ;)
I'd like to see Tilke design an oval.
Im not saying turn F1 into nascar. Just get some people who know more about running motorsport to run it!
way way uglier - DeLorean had something the Renault is just plastic junk which is why Jeremy Clarkson did a Nelsinho to one.
Yes it would be more interesting than his normal designs.
I like the Alpine A310. The DeLorean was basically a Lotus Esprit with some Ford Cortina parts.
I once worked for the guy who worked at DeLorean, he had one as his company car!
That would be quite a car to turn up in the car park with.
Lots of Back to the Future jokes?
makes the world interesting - it was particularly ugly example and an incredibly unflattering photo - its just awkward in every line!
Not really, by the time I worked for him he was the FD of a medical company and drove a Granada.
Not much of a step up then :D
It does indeed
Vive la difference!
Agreed - I had a Scalextric one of those and Ford GT40 when I was a kid - it is gorgeous.
Evening all
Sounds too logical for F1
Plus, it'd end up being sponsored by Hob-Nobs or something
No thanks
I cant help but think these are a bad idea... http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2009/10/tiny_lighter_cufflinks.html
Hey Jon
evening
I'll be testing a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Toyota Tundra next Monday! I'll be driving for Red Horse Racing Team
Much love Nelsinho
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/nelsinho-new-racing-bucket-jpg
ps will try and not crash it!
Lucazade mega prix at the 'stone?
I dont rally mind about the sponsorship. there is so much decent owners coud bring to the sport in terms of TV content, fan access, Data, information, ticket prices...
Definitely
I had some cufflinks that had "Headache" inscribed on one and "hangover" on the other.
You could unscrew the top to hold your aspirin. Great idea!
Wish I knew where they were
And advertising
Grrrr!
Yes, it's actively encouraged
I wonder if he will be able to adapt to oval racing? I cant think of many who have recently.
Montoya doesnt count ;)
Can someone link me to Lukeh's video that i've heard lots about
Good luck Rich
Have you tried his blog?
You should probably read the rest of hte comment ;)
It is sort of like being exiled to outer Mongolia - have you ever been to Charlotte North Carolina?
"Welcome to Lap 1 of the Fuji TV McVities Bet365 Japanese Grand Prix 53 from the Apple Suzuka Race Course, here's a break"
"Welcome back to lap 7". "Welcome back to lap 12" etc. etc.
Thy couldnt do that here though..
Exactly
Brought to you by Sky Sports HD Premium
They could if the Beeb lost the contract
[shudders]
I cannae find it, will have a look on his You Tube channel
meant South Carolina sorry - in Afrikaans there is an expression translated that says "nice from far but far from nice" That summarises the place.
I guess we are not really going to get a reasonable debate here ;)
He had to get a new one
http://toata.blogspot.com/
No they couldnt, there are laws defining ad breaks. itv or channel 4 got a big fine a couple of moths ago for having 20 secs to many ads in an hour
THat was a genuine tweet fron Nelsinho baby and he will be wearing he new Pink 'n Silver Helmet.
Product placement is being introduced in the UK, it's a slippery slope
Oh, I thought you were just supporting him :)
no i found his blog, just couldnt find it on his blog
From Lukeh's Twitter - for F1 fans... please check out the quick Ari Vatanen video I made! I need as many views as possible for it... :) http://bit.ly/wpv0D
That makes a lot of sense.
I couldnt understand why you could show f1 driver drinking out of their sponsored bottles and football teams wering their branded kits but not show a soap actor doing the washing with Daz...
I complained to OfCom about ITV's ineptitude in placing ads during races.
Got the standard blah blah response
... ITS ORANGE!
ah, ta.
thanks. i have seen it before, but i love it
they have no control over that, only how much time they have used to advertise stuff...
I can't help but think he'll get into trouble for use of the music though
I had a spleen to vent
Oops Dohickey was sleeping... otherwise I wouldve answered sorry :(
I had lots of Muse stuff on my old account yet amazingly it was Fox broadcasting that got mine shut down for a 10 second clip from Simpsons apparently
I think he has done wrong he also needs a break from all the criticism - many drivers have done worse but because they were rather better they were excused (Senna, Prost Schumacher). He needs to stand up for himself and particularly to his old man and just be a stronger person.
It IS good though :D
Ah ok
Murdoch again, grrr!
Good luck with the Ari thing, it's simple yet genius
and the BBC has not had it .... um strange the prevalence of Apple products from Top Gear to Absolutely Fabulous.
Possible to embed in FBFB until Brazil?
That's allowed, they rock! ;)
Actually, the world is doing that. Creative types use them a lot, I guess
I found this also...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ko7xcyJDK4&feature=related
Tres amusing,
good idea, will do later, have broken things temporarily on the dev server.
Cool, on the list
Err, playground
Whatever :)
lukeh, if you fancy writing a guest post explaining the thinking behind the video, why you made it and what ari means to you. please, please do so.
I'll write something up tomorrow if thats ok
Until I discovered Linux I thought Mac's were the greatest!
Love that tune too
Garbage: Milk
no rush at all sir. loving your work as ever.
Wouldn't it look like Mallory Park?
it's simply because they look good on screen :)
The man has a point :D
Interesting thoughts from James Allen on Webber testing new aero at Suzuka
http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2009/10/a-little-pointer-as-to-why-red-bull-will-be-quick-in-brazil/
yea its more than that - the Apple logos gets a very prominent display. Sure they look good, especially the iMacs.
How do you do an oval with 35 second gear corners?
There was a lot of speculation that was what they were doing? Ain't cheating!
Lukeh, I've posted a link to the vid on the MWM Facebook collective (and plugged Sidepodcast too ;) )
And no hairpins
Is a great idea
"Webber's 53 lap test session"
you learned from giggles too!
When life deals you lemons, you make lemonade?
Webber must drink quite a bit of that!
I used to be a salesman. It's a very similar idea ;)
Oh I forgot the Sniff Petrol Orange Squash joke didn't I? :(
AWw yay :) I'll write up a blog post for my own blog tomorrow and another one for here tomorrow, am a leeeeeeeeeeettle busy tonight
It will be interesting to see if vettels engine lasts in brazil, i am betting they change it there or it will go before the end of the race...
No. He is entitled to change his aero set up every lap if he likes
how confused are williams?
"Why, you might ask, is the team flying from Narita, when Nagoya is just 40 minutes up the road from Suzuka? The flights were booked months ago in the belief that the Japanese Grand Prix was taking place at Fuji Speedway …"
http://www.attwilliams.com/news/view/1146
We don't know how many good [but used] engines he has. I can't see them opting for a fresh one
Heheh. Really long straight with a slow corner at the end.... Avus?
I know I am in the minority here but Mr Vatanen really does not convince me. He may be a nice guy and all of that, but I just find him really naive (sort of a yellow canary being released with a few Peregrines circulating around). Is it better to have the knave that the poison toad is - I really do not know.
Even we knew that didn't we, what happened to changing your tickets?
we knew, i think, in summer 2008.
I sense an administrative error
And a dressing down ;)
and this is just mean:
"Finnish journalist Heikki Kulta was expecting to get a lift to the airport in Kimi Raikkonen’s helicopter, but Kimi told him prior to the race that he’d been bumped off the flight. It’s now touch and go as to whether Heikki will make his flight to Helsinki this evening. "
He's not Toadt and I think he genuinely means well
Doesn't seem the power hungry sort like Max and his protegé
He's not endorsed by Max. Win.
It is
Taking up Vodka weight, was he?
On my mixer, the lights go Green (20) Green (0) Orange (6) Red (CLIP).
Is it bad if it goes to Clip?
very.
Sound levels? Yes
ah. because before i was trying to keep it in the green's but y'all said it was too quiet...?
Yes. Try to keep it at the top end of the Green with occasional Orange.
I wonder if Ferrari will have Eau d'Alonso by Father's Day in their stores?
But he is having to deal with some power hungry types, I think he is not strategic enough - he undoubtedly pulls on the old emotional heart strings bit but I think you need more than that to be a good administrator. Could end up being a pawn and then not furthering the interests of the sport.
You should be able to normalise the audio on output, this will boost the levels up.
Lots of Orange with no red?
Thats generally what it is, with occational red, but i do try and keep it off there
It's almost a given that Todt will be bad
I'd give Ari a shot
Turn it down a smidgen perhaps
The corners at Avus were high banked and fast originally
I like playing devil advocate....
It's assumed, it's definitely not guarenteed.
I gave up with F1 along time ago, he's going to have to be super good to make me really interested again
But Tilke soon fixed that?
I turn the main mix down, so it keeps it off there, then i guess i just turn it up a bit in audacity when i'm putting it out?
He is not naive. He is very astute. He is a Finn who managed to get elected to the European Parliament for a French constituency
That Todt is being endorsed by Max is a really bad thing. Todt is an astute fella, if not a very nice one and will be his own boss (forget that he is a disciple of Max - that is just propaganda). I was very disappointed with Ari on his environmental agenda - he is old school conservative and I am not sure that is long-term good for the sport.
did you try the levelator link, like i suggested?
it's somewhere in my tabs ;) i will have a look
A failed European Member of Parliament is not much of endorsement. He pulls at the old heart strings and is probably a good guy just not very smart.
Why failed?
if any f1 bloggers out there are looking for legitimate ways to use formula one pics in their posts without costing the earth, you'd do well to check out PicApp: http://picapp.com/
direct link to f1 photos: http://picapp.com/Search.aspx?term=f1
the images are completely free and legal to use. it's easier if you have a wordpress.com blog, but it should work in all software. choose a picture, copy the code and picapp sorts out the rest.
Ah, thanks mr c, that'll be awesome for use. will have props look tomorrow as im heading for sleep. night all and lotsa love.
night rg.
See ya RG
That's wicked - I shall make use of that!
they have Gp2 pictures too!!! Thank you!!!!
Did not get elected to the 2009 European Parliament - so its a change of career. I have listen to a lot of what he says and read/translated what's on the web- its comfort talk designed for mass appeal but lacks substance!
no worries. i should add there are T&C's to agree with: http://www.picapp.com/TermsAndCondition.aspx
but they seem ok.
What's Todt been saying that's good?
ooo. clever.
Lots of politician have lost elections then gone on to great positions. Losing an election did not make them failed politicians.
He is addressing a particular audience but it is clear from the things being said by th people who have come out to support him that he is saying more meaningful stuff to them. I have absolutely no doubt he will be a success and finally move the FIA off the course chosen by Balestre and Mosley
tis really handy. jon's show for sidepodradio was uber-quiet, so we threw it into there and it came out peachy.
Actually a lot of devolution of power down from the FIA presidency. In all honesty either Todt or Ari will be better than Max - because power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
oooh, awesome. ya should have said, i'd have shoved it through my own version
i did!
did we know nico's twitter account was legit? http://twitter.com/nicorosberg16 (sorta)
some viral video going around: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGPaPyGxwzI
I just don't trust him, didn't when he was at Ferrari either
Very cool, have bookmarked, thanks!
No doubt he has popular vote. He needs better advisor's. The chances of him being successful are slim. Todt will not necessarily be as bad as we think.
Is that like MP3Gain? I use that to normalise all my songs at 89dB so I can use the graphic equalizer on my iPod...
really? oops, apologies.
Good evening everybody what's news Alison on tonight I kinda wanna find out about the papermache day
probably. it's like a loud pedal for podcasts.
has a tendancy to mess around with music a little, but is great for speech.
SAving it for a drunken weekend I think
She got the job though
I agree. You can see it in their respective manifestos. I'd be happier with Jean Todt...
...except he's Jean Todt.
awesome good for her
Wow, i love you guys and your pessimism ;)
You can't follow F1 without equal doses of pessimism and cynicism ;-)
I remember when Max could not be as bad as Balestre. Turned out he was ten times worse. Todt will be as bad as Max
No papier mache until next week
hmmm ;)
Or times worse if the pattern continues! :-P
Once bitten...
The circumstances are very different - to be successful in F1 you have lie and cheat. Some of the stuff guys like Colin Chapman did etc are scandalous. No team and no driver is completely honest - it would be too much of competitive disadvantage. I think there is less reason for Todt to be untrustworthy as the FIA president and I think he will have more insight into some of the tricks that could be perpetrated. That does not mean I want him in as FIA president- I like neither candidate for the position.
gutted
We need a bit of honesty here when he replaced Balestre he was a breath of fresh air. He brought lots of safety to the sport (and interestingly environmental considerations). He simply outlived his sell-by data by a considerable number of years.
And his close ties to Bernie haven't helped
I shan't judge until i've seen, hopefully i won't have to, because Ari seems to have more of a public persona
But the bad thing is the public has no say in the vote. So, despite being popular with us lot, it doesn't make a difference.
I wonder if someone could find a way for Massa to grow a new skull
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20091006/thl-medical-marvel-man-regrows-skull-d831572.html
Oh i know that, but i'm saying i hope he does get in, because he'll be a bit more public-friendly
Of course, I'd choose Ari over Todt any day of the week.
No question Ari is the popular choice - but to secure presidency it is about allegiances and power struggles. Personally I think we will get Todt, he could be terrible, but lets not prejudge. In my books Ari really lacks long-term vision, Todt has not really disclose this as yet. Many are supporting Ari as a knee-jerk reaction to Max without analysing what he has to say.
He only carried on the sagety work that was already going on. Max generates a lot of hype about safety and the suggestion is always that it was horrifically dangerous till he arrived. Ther was not a death at a GP from 1982 to 1994. Max had nothing to do with that. All he did was one of his massive knee jerk reactions after Senna died.
His interest in environmentalism is a very recent development. He banned KERS 10 years before he introduced it because it was against the ethos of F1. Green strips on tyres are not environementally friendly.
If you look at the best thing he did during his time in office it had nothing to do with F1. It was the Euro NCAP road car crash testing ratings.
There is nothing he has done in F1 where you can demonstrate that he was better than Balestre. At least Balestre stood up to Bernie and kept him under control.
Unfotunately, I agree but it's hard to trust him
Not quite as recent as you might suppose FIA has been Carbon trading to offsets its carbon output for a long time. Sure the green strips on the tyre are a joke. Max self-promotes but increased safety has followed the tragic death of Senna.
You are right the new incumbent needs to stand up Bernie!
Carbon trading is not being environmentaly aware, it is money laundering to get environmentalists rich.
I fear we I am slipping back into discussing real politics though so i will desist
There is not a single team principal that I would really trust (Mario is the closest). Peter Sauber was probably the last really good guy. He did things to pioneer safety over performance which I cannot see happening today. He introduced significant corporate social responsibility into his F1 programme. That is why it is sad to see the team sold to some shadowy outfit.
Carbon trading does bring some benefit to impoverished parts of the world in terms of job creation. It can enhance resource bases for sustainable livelihoods. The problem is how it is executed and of course you are right middle man profiteering is rampant. I am not sure about the wealth of environmentalists - it is mostly brokered by engineers. As a strategy for actual environmental amelioration is weak but it can be an instrument for social upliftment.
Carbon offsetting is a joke. They offset the carbon dioxide produced from the cars and the flights etc. None of that registers compared to the amount produced by wind tunnels and Honda had 5 of them running last year. All he has ever done is offer a sop to environmentalism.
There is no doubt Max took a lot of action on safety after Senna's death and not all of it good. I have argued since the week following that crash when the FIA first started putting out mesaages on safety that there was nothin else he could do and in fact his aim all along was self-preservation rather than a genuine interest in safety.
It was hardly unpredictable that someone would hit the wall at Tamburello and die. Piquet had a very serious accident there and after that Berger hit the wall and and his car burst into flames and burned for more than 30 seconds before the marshals turned up.
Why should someone be given credit for taking action after a fatal accident when people were screaming for it to be taken after the previous accidents. No-one who was president of the FIA that Monday morning could do anything other than make safety a priority. Once he saw the response he got in the press he has kept plugging safety.
Carbon trading is based on planting trees that will absorb carbon dioxide over their life time. That assumes they will live that long but in the meantime the carbon dioxide produced today can be in the atmosphere for 20 years before it is absorbed. Carbon trading is like giving a beggar a buck. Clears the conscience but achieves nothing.
That is so simplistic and a eurocentric view. Tree-planting can bring huge benefits (in the right environment), from erosion contro, soi nutrient enrichment to food security (if say fruit trees are planted) to sources of fuel and medicines for local communities etc. Simply the act of employing people to plant the trees provides benefit to local economy. I do not disagree about its ability to absorb atmospheric carbon - certainly benefits are released only in the longer term.
I'm going to leave you and all your theorys....because sleep is of the order.
Night
Unfortunatly that isnt the full story.
Money from carbon trading is usulay funnelled into environmental charities who fullfill the purpose of offsetting trees, however they also put money up for environmental research into global warming and the like.
Unsurprisingly they want this to support global warming theories so they select researchers who will get them the results they want and conveniently not publish results which could be problematic. These carbon offsetters caryy a lot of cash, and this has corrupted a lot of research into global warming.
People often say you cant trust some findings because they were funded by the oil industry, equally i would say you cant trust any funded by carbon offsetters, leaving very little reliable research over the past 10-15 years, and a lot of wealthy environmentalists.

There are all sorts of benefits but I am talking only about the carbon absorption. What is the point of planting new trees while allowing rain forests to be destroyed. It would make a lot more sense to use the carbon offsetting money to buy up sections of rainforest.

There is a fundamental flaw in all global warming theories. Everything is based on the Earth with no thought of how the sun is changing.
Bbut the sun changing is happening noticeably by the decade, surely?
*isn't
Bye Jon
Is there any reason why skype sometimes sounds like you are underwater?
It was fine last night, now i cant hold a decent conversation after 55 secs?
The sun's behaviour changes a lot more than you think. There is an 11 year sun spot cycle and various other things that affect the Earth. We are in the middle of an unexpectedly long solar minimimum for example which I have seen no mention of in any environmentalist literature.

Network issues, either yours or most likely, Skype's
The real solution is to provide sufficient economic opportunities without the need for forest destruction in the developing world. I am not completely sold on the idea that simply planting trees is the solution to our carbon emissions. In fact it can actually have the opposite effect. A bit complex to explain but you actually need individual ecosystems across the to have a carbon target. Of course none of this will reverse trends like ice cap melting at poles and mountain tops at best it will slow down the process due to negative feedback processes. I am always surprised that people want to raise the issue of weather it is human-induced or not. Its not very relevant, simply as atmospheric carbon rises, ocean acidity increases and this will release carbon from the sea accelerating further atmospheric carbon build up. We are on a slippery slope. What is not fully understood are tipping points which have the potential to unleash very unpredictable events. Sea storm surge could be one such event.
I thought it was just the British Summer ;)
The whole sun spot stuff has been dis-proven. Problem is much of the research was not properly peer-reviewed. The great global climate swindle is as the name says a swindle - it was totally scientific hogwash.
NASA probably don't understand the British summer so that is what is confusing them
They are rubbish!
It's free, how great do you expect it to be?
Is super too much to ask?
Absolutely. There should be an interantional campaign to stop the destruction of the rainforests now using international aid and to plant sustainable woodland on the forest that has already been cleared
Of course we cannot change how the sun behaves, but we can reduce the amount of greenhouse gases. It is a seriously complex field so sadly both sides of the debate have been trivialised.
I was only giving sun spots as an example of changes in the sun's behaviour. There is an assumption that the sun is constant and it is not.
I am not arguing about what we have to do only that the data and in many cases the suppositions it is based on is flawed. Common sense dictates that even if global temperature was not affected it is still a bad idea to pollute the atmosphere.
I know of Climate Change scientist that excludes background climate shifts, these have been going on since the cretaceous extinctions (when the dinosaurs died out). The ascendency of mammals is largely due to their ability to cope with faster shifts of climate.
One issue that I am surprised that has not been more widely reviewed is global-dimming - BBC Horizon a few years back showed a good documentary.
Sorry meant to say I know of NO Climate Change scientist that ignores natural climatic shifts. Simply the wobbles of the earth on its axis will cause these. Sun spot activity is difficult to directly ascribe causality. My speculation is that it has less influence that would seem intuitive. In contrast say volcanic activity could have a big impact (which we also cannot control for).
I saw that. There are all sorts of factors at play but carbon dioxide is always the one that gets the blame. NASA published some stuff recently that backs a theory that I have had for a while that aerosols in the atmosphere may have a greater effect than greenhouse gases
We understand the behaviour of Carbon Dioxide - Methane is four-time more effective as a forcing agent for raising temperature. Aerosols have contributed to reduced income-solar radiation, the significance of which are altered global climate regimes. There is no question if the warm gulf stream were "switched off" as predicted by melting of ice caps and fresh water intrusions - the UK's climate would be catastrophically altered.
I agree, F1 and great music, it's like paradise ! There's been muse, arctic monkeys I think ? Loads of good stuff !
