We are into Tuesday already, which means Monday is well and truly gone. I don't know about anyone else, but I found it to be quite a stressful one. Turning towards today instead, then, here are some of the things we're discussing:

  • Alguersuari seems to think that this weekend saw a big improvement in his own performance, and that it was one of his best weekends in Formula 1. I can see what he's trying to say, that the car was good and he felt comfortable in it and everything was working well, until he crashed into the barriers - as illustrated here.
  • We've talked about Harry's blog before, she's spending a year following Formula 1 around the world and writing about it as she goes... sort of. Posts have been missing in action recently, but there's been a round up of the last few races, and it's fair to say she's having a good time!
  • We've not been shy about expressing our Jake love here at Sidepodcast, but I have to say his post-race blog entries are one of the best things about the BBC's coverage. He's got a genuine enthusiasm for the racing drama, but fills us in on plenty of behind the scenes gossip from the paddock as well. Far from showing off, Jake has a way of bringing us along for the ride without going over the top. Yay for Jake!

That should do for now. There's the possibility of an announcement or two today, but I'll save that for the potential breakout threads. I'll see you in the comments.

I almost forgot! I played with one of those sony E-readers this afternoon in waterstones. It was really cool, i could picture myself using one instead of a book!

That said, the price wasnt anywhere near making it worthwhile for me.

Amazon don't do video downloads which is what I was after :(

Seems to be some excitement for the race developing in the UAE http://www.gulfnews.com/sport/Motor_Racing/10355055.html

I wonder how many places have the problems of volenteers demanding to use their porsche's on the track!

hehe, they love to race in the UAE... camels, horses, Dhows, class 1 powerboats... I really hope F1 takes off with the Emirati locals.

I have been sat in the passenger seat enough times to know they love to street race.

Possibly, I am amazed there arent more accidents on the roads, there seems to be a magic art to going between cars and not hitting them on roads 6 lanes wide on each side

An old Major general friend of my dads once told me that learning to drive there would probably be the best place in the world as you learn to drive defensively on massive roads.

I remember the Ferrari dealer in Edinburgh put on a day at a local track for Ferrari owners a few years ago. A couple of guys I knew were there as marshals and there was all sorts of damage including two brand new top of the range Ferraris totally written off

Hehe, i would expect that to happen over there 2.

Way back when i was at my old house in the CBD there was a massive screech and a crash behind my house. some guy had managed to flip his camero and land it belly up in the middle of a flowerbed on a roundabout.

I looked over the wall and he was yelling into his phone, i have no idea who he was talking to, but he was not happy.

there are these little security gadgets that banks give away with the internet banking. The one I have displays combination of 6 digits. Those 6 digits combined with my password grant me an access to my bank account. Those 6 digits are always displayed for few seconds only. Afterwards the display goes blank. When used again different 6 random digits appear. Digits, always digits. Last night however I realized there is a word on display. The display hasn't turned itself off since, the word is still there. The thing has frozen and likely will stay that way till the battery dies. Is it trying to tell me the outcome of the F1 championship battle ? :-)

#MFC New rules to end 'blogger payola'

FTA:"US regulators will for the first time crack down on bloggers who fail to disclose fees or freebies they get from companies for reviewing products."

Hmm - as with all things like this, sounds interesting but unworkable!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)06/10/2009 at 07:40

Oddly enough, I just got my earphones caught in the wheel of my chair. The Earbud was wedged in the axle and it took ages to fish out - still working though :D

    I heard 10am, but I hear a lot of things. ;)

  • Alex Andronov06/10/2009 at 08:19

I thought it might be nice to go for a bit of a positive vibe today. So I would love to hear who your #F1Hero is. These could be serious like Fangio, or comical like Montoya's personal chef. But whatever they are the idea is to say who it is and why you think they are your #F1Hero.

So I guess I should start off...

My #F1Hero is Nakajima's Lollypop man. Standing there bravely facing regular run ins week in week out can not be easy. So he's my #F1Hero

  • Amy06/10/2009 at 08:21

My #F1Hero is Nakajima's Lollypop man. Standing there bravely facing regular run ins week in week out can not be easy. So he's my #F1Hero

my #F1Hero is McLaren marketing guru John Allert. For getting me into the cricket :D :D

  • Alex Andronov06/10/2009 at 08:22

my #F1Hero is McLaren marketing guru John Allert. For getting me into the cricket :D :D

I'll go for another #F1Hero. Mark Hughes, every race he stands in the commentary box with Legard. Unlike Martin he can't even interrupt him. And yet he has never had to hit him. Amazing!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)06/10/2009 at 08:24

My #F1Hero is the cameraman who follows around Jake as he walks and talks :D

    Walking backwards and filming!

  • Amy06/10/2009 at 08:30

another #F1Hero must be all of yooooou because without SPC I'd probably still be dreaming of the future when I might get to go to a European race rather than actually having tickets to one.

  • Alex Andronov06/10/2009 at 08:31

    Walking backwards and filming!

Do you think there are two of them, one facing the right way and guiding? Actually the guy who does Martins goes even quicker!

Oddly enough, I just got my earphones caught in the wheel of my chair. The Earbud was wedged in the axle and it took ages to fish out - still working though

Morning Christine... So who is yours?

  • Journeyer06/10/2009 at 08:36

    Morning, everyone.

    Ooooh, nice topic! :D

My #F1Hero must be Murray Walker. He's the reason why I really fell in love with the sport, especially its history. :)

He always does seem very happy. Imagine that a guy who enjoys what he does. Interestingly Lewis seems to be enjoying things more now he isn't under as much pressure. But Vettel edges him because he's under pressure and still smiley :)

Flav has broken into Renault and stolen the contract

this could be solved by issuing watering cans to the whole country!

  • Alex Andronov06/10/2009 at 10:04

I think it may be the content of the watering cans that's the issue.

    pretty much everything.

the one where he didn't have an answer.

  • Alex Andronov06/10/2009 at 10:09

his kimi quote even more so.

Yeah. It's important to remember with these things that things very rarely happen with public proclimations of intent like Toyota saying they want Kubica or Kimi.

What you want to do is keep the rumour strong enough so that other teams back off and you get your driver for cheaper.

  • Alex Andronov06/10/2009 at 10:11

very possibly interested in IP, yup.

Remember the talk of the Mercedes Veto. It goes both ways. Mercedes could in theory block McLaren going to BMW, but of course in theory McLaren could block Mercedes from buying Brawn.

  • Paul06/10/2009 at 10:11

we (toyota) probably lost "Robert" --> "Renault to annouce Kubica on Tuesday" --> "Kubica - Renault announcement postponed due to unspecified reasons" :-)

  • Alex Andronov06/10/2009 at 10:12

I don't think Kimi would bother going anywhere else. Besides, he doesn't need the money

Right... But clearly his manager needs to keep the impression that he might go somewhere else alive (hence Red Bull rumours) otherwise McLaren could just say, "we'll give you a fiver".

  • Alex Andronov06/10/2009 at 10:13

Would love to hear the reality of these negotiations. Maybe Joe knows.

  • Paul06/10/2009 at 10:15

rumours have been flying around for a while that Merc and Mc are to sever the ties sooner than later. that of course can only be done if Mc can get hand on decent engine. BMW power is out there for grabs. There comes the base for rumour. Where has it appeared for the first time I can't recall

    Yourself?

    I'm pretty good.

Everyone has to answer Alex's question from earlier:

I thought it might be nice to go for a bit of a positive vibe today. So I would love to hear who your #F1Hero is. These could be serious like Fangio, or comical like Montoya's personal chef. But whatever they are the idea is to say who it is and why you think they are your #F1Hero.

    Who's yours?

#F1Hero Mine is very obvious - Mr Barrichello. Although there's plenty of reasons why for me... he's constantly stayed dedicated towards Formula 1 even when he's had some rough times dealing with the loss of Ayrton right at the start of his career, to be stuck under Michael for years at Ferrari and generally for most of his career being stuck in inconsistent cars despite his obvious ability to be a top driver. But everything about him and his career to me as a fan is everything Formula 1 should be about for a driver - a nice guy who loves what he does and whats to strive for success even if challenges stand in the way. You always see a smile of his face, and he always puts 110% into his races, and obviously he's the most experienced driver in Formula 1 so for him to still be here and doing what he loves with a smile on his face and winning races is just mega :)

Special mentions for me as an f1 hero also go to Sir Jackie Stewart, Murray Walker and oddly enough Alex Zanardi although that may be more away from F1 than his involvement in F1...

  • Alex Andronov06/10/2009 at 11:36

I can think of at least two :)

Does he have an affinity with one and is the other his bff?

"Kimi is a fantastic driver, and I like him and know him well. He was with the team for five years. He is quick, he is committed and I think he probably would be very committed to beating Ferrari in the future - knowing him."

so, what he's saying, is kimi just needs a bit of motivation?

I found it kind of amusing that as you went backwards filming down the queue there was the beeping of a truck reversing.

  • Nick06/10/2009 at 13:17

I think they are having a media day with heli tours, car rides an the lot.

I thought Bruno senna was driving the journos round, but perhaps MB was having so much fun he decided to become the taxi driver?

When I get back from NZ so ages yet. They want me to get all trained up before I go though. I need to recruit a replacement for myself asap though.

How odd. Sorry I'm a bit of a geek about things like that. My GP at the moment doesn't do appointments. It works like the deli counter, you turn up and wait until there's a slot. Oddly enough it's the best system I've ever seen!!

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 14:38

mine works like yours, I generally have to wait a couple of days. Although I haven't gone to a GP for actually being sick since 1997 or so.

Did you have a strangely named coffee?

  • Alison06/10/2009 at 14:42

If you're going to make appointments, it's important to leave a couple of doctors in your practice unbookable so that people can ring up on the day with more "emergency" type problems. How many should depend on the size of your practice. If they're free in the day, they can take some of the burden from those with booked appointments.

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 14:42

mine works like yours, I generally have to wait a couple of days. Although I haven't gone to a GP for actually being sick since 1997 or so.

I've not even been to this GP before, last two times I've been has been to get jabs for travelling

Can't even remember the last time I went cos I was actually sick

I just knew this one wasn't going away after a weekend of Ibuprofen

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 14:44

If you're going to make appointments, it's important to leave a couple of doctors in your practice unbookable so that people can ring up on the day with more "emergency" type problems.

I would be surprised if they had enough GPs to do that here. Some practises are refusing new patients on their books

We swapped cos the previous one was terrible

  • Alex Andronov06/10/2009 at 14:44

Did you have a strangely named coffee?

Yes something called an espresso ;)

I ordered it on one of the videos.

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 14:45

    Ah, go faster juice

  • Alex Andronov06/10/2009 at 14:46

Ours... Just up the road but presumably in a different borough allows you to book online but they only offer slots for the single day.

  • Nick06/10/2009 at 14:46

    Wooooo! I GOT THE JOB!!!!

Well done! now if you could rub some of that employability on to me...

  • Alison06/10/2009 at 14:46

I would be surprised if they had enough GPs to do that here. Some practises are refusing new patients on their books

They should do.... There aren't really big GP recruitment issues nationwide. The way applications work shouldn't leave gaps, particularly not at a trainee level.

The main problem is that it's more profitable to run a practice in an area with good quality of health which is precisely where it isn't needed. It's diminishing returns to run your practice in an area where people actually need it!

:D My CV isn't awesome but once people work with me, they're keen to do so again. I think that's the key. You never know when it's gonna be useful to you to go back somewhere or get in touch with old employers.

Max is talking about contacting the guys at Radio Le Mans to spread the Ari Vatanen video I made about. Oooh.

    Coolness

  • Nick06/10/2009 at 15:17

Max is talking about contacting the guys at Radio Le Mans to spread the Ari Vatanen video I made about. Oooh.

They dont really care about the FIA or F1 though?

They're running the group supporting him on FB

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 15:18

They dont really care about the FIA or F1 though?

Maybe they just dislike Max & Toad

  • Journeyer06/10/2009 at 15:18

  • Amy06/10/2009 at 15:20

I did that once, I don't know how to get out! ;)

  • Nick06/10/2009 at 15:20

In Dubai. Its so close to me aswell

  • Alison06/10/2009 at 15:23

Why? I wouldn't be surprised to see Fernonso doing PR for Renault up until about Christmas?

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 15:23

its only a week after the last race :D

I suppose new contracts start on Jan 1st, stil...

Oh, so you're going ut there anyway. The race is a huge bonus if you get tickets?

  • Nick06/10/2009 at 15:27

Oh, so you're going ut there anyway. The race is a huge bonus if you get tickets?

I have a meeting out there, i am meeting my dad out there, and the GP was on at the same time.

I thought it was all going to pan out perfectly, then someone decided to put a load of silly music perfomances on at the circuit and i cant go :(

  • Alison06/10/2009 at 15:27

I thought it was all going to pan out perfectly, then someone decided to put a load of silly music perfomances on at the circuit and i cant go :(

    So it's improved ticket sales?

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 15:27

and thus we learn that booking early is not a bad thing ;)

  • Jon Waldock06/10/2009 at 15:29

Can someone point lou to this comment when she arrives...(and to anyone else interested)

Just been reading "Sponsorship News", it's a sponsorship journal. Not sure if this has been mensioned....

"Brawn GP has confirmed the agreement of a special one-race partnership with Brazilian brewing company Cervejaria Petrópolis for the 2009 Brazilian Grand Prix to be held at the Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo on 18 october.

The Brazilian Grand Prix will bring a global audience ot Cervejaria Petrópolis who currently have a presence in every main racing category in Brazil including Stock CAr, Copa Vicar, Stock Jr, Formula Truck and the Itaipva GT Brazil events of GT3, Trofeo Maserati and Copa Renault Clio"...

...."Nick Fry, Cheif Executive Officer at Brawn GP said; 'Brawn GP is delighted to welcome Cervejaria Petrópolis and their Itaipava brand to the team and to Formula One for the very first time. The Brazilian Grand Prix is always a great event with a fantastic atmosphere and we are very proud ot be associated with a prestigious Brazilian company for their home race. Our new partnership should prove to be very exciting as teh season and teh battle for the championship reaches its climax'

  • Nick06/10/2009 at 15:29

Have the GA tickets sold out then?

    There arent any...

  • Alison06/10/2009 at 15:30

    There arent any...

Huh? Well that's epic fail on their behalf.

  • Journeyer06/10/2009 at 15:30

Just been reading "Sponsorship News", it's a sponsorship journal. Not sure if this has been mensioned....

It was mentioned around the same time as Canon, i think.

  • Jon Waldock06/10/2009 at 15:30

It was mentioned around the same time as Canon, i think.

you mean i just typed all that out for nothing? dang

  • Journeyer06/10/2009 at 15:30

Huh? Well that's epic fail on their behalf.

Abu Dhabi doesn't do GA? Given who live there, I'm not surprised.

  • Journeyer06/10/2009 at 15:31

you mean i just typed all that out for nothing? dang

    awww :)

  • Nick06/10/2009 at 15:31

    So it's improved ticket sales?

Yes, but there are going to be a lot of non f1 fans there just along for the music.

I can see why they would do all this for the 2nd and third years, but it seems unnececary for the first year.

Especially when it means motorsport fans loose the chance to go because of Aerosmith and queens of Leon fans want to have a sing-along, with no interest of watching the race at all.

  • Alison06/10/2009 at 15:32

Abu Dhabi doesn't do GA? Given who live there, I'm not surprised.

One of my friends grew up out there. There is quite a large ex-pat community. I'd have thought there's a market for reasonably priced tickets!

  • Nick06/10/2009 at 15:32

Abu Dhabi doesn't do GA? Given who live there, I'm not surprised.

Its a street circuit, what would you be able to see? all the cars will be beneth the concrete barriers?

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 15:32

Yes, but there are going to be a lot of non f1 fans there just along for the music.

But they won't be watching the bands from their seats, will they?

    That's silly

Nothing wrong with Kings of Leon though

  • Journeyer06/10/2009 at 15:33

Yes, but there are going to be a lot of non f1 fans there just along for the music.

they'll drop by the race, see what it's like. who knows, some of them might stick around... ;)

  • Jon Waldock06/10/2009 at 15:33

    awww

good thing i didnt write it aalll out

  • Nick06/10/2009 at 15:34

But they won't be watching the bands from their seats, will they?

    That's silly

You need a race ticket to get access to the concerts. its a good deal, but its quite disappointing for me.

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 15:34

they'll drop by the race, see what it's like. who knows, some of them might stick around... ;)

And empty on Friday & Saturday

  • me06/10/2009 at 15:34

big news, or not so much?

"The Ferrari team has announced that Luca Marmorini will replace Gilles Simon as head of the engine and electronics department."

"Marmorini returns to Ferrari after having worked for Toyota for ten years. The 48-year-old Italian left the Japanese squad in January this year."

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79306

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 15:34

You need a race ticket to get access to the concerts. its a good deal, but its quite disappointing for me.

    That's ridiculous

    Thanks Bernie

  • Journeyer06/10/2009 at 15:34

And empty on Friday & Saturday

no different from any other circuit nowadays to be honest...

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 15:35

big news, or not so much?

    Meh?

    My first thought was, who?

  • me06/10/2009 at 15:36

    My first thought was, who?

my first thought, was... toyota don't appear to have many staff left.

  • Journeyer06/10/2009 at 15:36

"The Ferrari team has announced that Luca Marmorini will replace Gilles Simon as head of the engine and electronics department."

Gilles Simon was brought along by Todt when he left Peugeot for Ferrari.

So the Italianization continues then... Marmorini's Toyota engines haven't exactly been impressive though. Where's Paolo Martinelli when you need him...?

  • Nick06/10/2009 at 15:36

    That's ridiculous

It will be good to keep the crowds up in the furutre, but this is the first year, its so unnecessary.

This whole F1 rocks thing looks to be an absoloute disaster. First holding it at the same time as the race in singapore, and now this...

  • Alison06/10/2009 at 15:36

    My first thought was, who?

I thought for a second it meant Toyota were pulling out but now I see he left there in January. I vote "meh"

  • Amy06/10/2009 at 15:36

"The Ferrari team has announced that Luca Marmorini will replace Gilles Simon as head of the engine and electronics department."

I read that earlier and though.....the tennis player?

  • Journeyer06/10/2009 at 15:37

This whole F1 rocks thing looks to be an absoloute disaster. First holding it at the same time as the race in singapore, and now this...

Wasn't F1 Rocks held AFTER the racing finished? The only downside to it was that it was a bit far from Marina Bay.

  • Journeyer06/10/2009 at 15:37

I read that earlier and though.....the tennis player?

    :D

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 15:37

    So the Italianization continues then...

That hasn't worked out so well in the past has it?

Be careful Rob, start looking for a job now

  • Amy06/10/2009 at 15:38

This whole F1 rocks thing looks to be an absoloute disaster. First holding it at the same time as the race in singapore, and now this...

but you can't really blame the concert for you missing out on tickets, you've been talking about buying some for ages

  • Journeyer06/10/2009 at 15:38

That hasn't worked out so well in the past has it?

Martinelli was excellent before - and he's Italian. He went to the roadcars after Schumi retired...

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 15:39

Martinelli was excellent before - and he's Italian. He went to the roadcars after Schumi retired...

    I mean, going very Italian

  • Christine06/10/2009 at 15:39

This whole F1 rocks thing looks to be an absoloute disaster. First holding it at the same time as the race in singapore, and now this...

I thought F1 Rocks finished on Saturday.

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 15:40

    I mean, going very Italian

Their modern success had a lot of British influence didn't it?

  • Amy06/10/2009 at 15:41

I thought F1 Rocks finished on Saturday.

    it did

  • Journeyer06/10/2009 at 15:41

Their modern success had a lot of British influence didn't it?

    Global, really. Brawn's a Brit. Bryne's a South African. Todt's French. Schumi's German. Martinelli's Italian. Dyer's an Aussie(?). A bit of everything...

  • me06/10/2009 at 15:41

I thought F1 Rocks finished on Saturday.

ooh, more bands are playing in abu dhabi? who haven't i heard of this time?

  • Lukeh06/10/2009 at 15:41

Ok I just got a lot more serious about this Youtube thing with Vatanen. It has this on his website concerning Youtube support videos...

    3. The winner of the competition is the one who makes the video which gets the most views until the election day.

    4. The prize for winner:

    • one of my personal rally items

    • and one ticket for Monaco Grand Prix

    • and an Expresso with me at Cafe de Paris, Monaco (I´ll pay...)

  • Nick06/10/2009 at 15:41

but you can't really blame the concert for you missing out on tickets, you've been talking about buying some for ages

I didnt know if i would be able to go out there when the race was on, my meeting was supposed to be towards the end of November, before everything fell into place they had annonced the concerts. I could have gambled on tickets, but there seemed to be enough left.

Its my own fault, but i wouldnt mind so much if it was f1 being so popular that caused me to miss out, its just some music fans who will have minimal if any interest in the track and who might not even go.

  • Nick06/10/2009 at 15:42

I thought your YouTube account was suspended?

  • Nick06/10/2009 at 15:43

ooh, more bands are playing in abu dhabi? who haven't i heard of this time?

Aerosmith, kings of leon, beyonce, Timberlands

  • Amy06/10/2009 at 15:43

ooh, more bands are playing in abu dhabi? who haven't i heard of this time?

I want to know who is doing Melbourne, the promo I just got sent said "in the last two years we have had Kiss and The Who and 2010 will be even better" and I will hold them to that.

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 15:44

ooh, more bands are playing in abu dhabi? who haven't i heard of this time?

Some King called Leon, I think

  • Lukeh06/10/2009 at 15:44

I thought your YouTube account was suspended?

It is, hence why I'm making a new account now

  • Nick06/10/2009 at 15:44

Sounds like an expensive concert to me

Not too bad.... 5 or 6 major acts for that price in the UAE is pretty reasonable

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 15:44

I want to know who is doing Melbourne, the promo I just got sent said "in the last two years we have had Kiss and The Who and 2010 will be even better" and I will hold them to that.

Can't get any worse can it?

You cant get better than KISS... its all downhill from there!

  • Lukeh06/10/2009 at 15:45

I want to know who is doing Melbourne, the promo I just got sent said "in the last two years we have had Kiss and The Who and 2010 will be even better" and I will hold them to that.

Muse are touring Australia early next year so... who knows ;)

  • Amy06/10/2009 at 15:45

Can't get any worse can it?

I liked both of them :(

  • Amy06/10/2009 at 15:46

ahh they're doing the Big Day Out though

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 15:46

I liked both of them :(

Did I mention you won't be choosing the music on the road trip? ;)

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 15:47

ahh they're doing the Big Day Out though

    Powderfinger! There's a name I haven't heard in AGES!

  • Amy06/10/2009 at 15:48

Did I mention you won't be choosing the music on the road trip? ;)

last.fm says our music compatibility is very high but that appears to be solely from podcasts because when I look at your 'most played' list I haven't even heard of most of them and the ones I have heard of I can probably only name one song by :D

  • Christine06/10/2009 at 15:48

Is the music actually part of F1 Rocks? All I can find about it is some company called Flash Entertainment and this sentence:

The Yasalam After-Race concerts on Yas Island are part of a wider programme of events which have been announced under the Yasalam (Arabic for amazing) banner.

The F1 Rocks site seems permanently focused on Singapore.

  • Amy06/10/2009 at 15:48

    Powderfinger! There's a name I haven't heard in AGES!

I loooove Powderfinger, they did a free gig in Melbourne the other day that they announced on Twitter and I couldn't go because of stupid work :(

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 15:48

It'll be an education then ;)

  • Amy06/10/2009 at 15:49

Is the music actually part of F1 Rocks? All I can find about it is some company called Flash Entertainment and this sentence:

I don't think it is, I think it's like the shows they do in Melbourne which are solely organised to get more people in the door by the race promoters. F1 Rocks said they would be "back next year" on the TV show.

  • Nick06/10/2009 at 15:49

Is the music actually part of F1 Rocks? All I can find about it is some company called Flash Entertainment and this sentence:

    Ah maybe not then.

    still as annoying!

  • Amy06/10/2009 at 15:50

It'll be an education then ;)

i have heard of the Arctic Monkeys but if you offered me $1,000,000 right now to name one of their songs I would fail.

  • Christine06/10/2009 at 15:51

I don't think it is, I think it's like the shows they do in Melbourne which are solely organised to get more people in the door by the race promoters. F1 Rocks said they would be "back next year" on the TV show.

Cool. Just wanted to make sure we had our facts straight.

F1 Rocks = didn't clash with the race, and isn't responsible for Abu Dhabi ticket sales.

  • Alison06/10/2009 at 15:51

i have heard of the Arctic Monkeys but if you offered me $1,000,000 right now to name one of their songs I would fail.

    Lucky you!

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 15:51

i have heard of the Arctic Monkeys but if you offered me $1,000,000 right now to name one of their songs I would fail.

I get WAY more obscure than that :)

  • Nick06/10/2009 at 15:51

i have heard of the Arctic Monkeys but if you offered me $1,000,000 right now to name one of their songs I would fail.

I bet you look good on the dancefloor....

  • Alex Andronov06/10/2009 at 15:51

I bet you look good on the dancefloor....

    thanks very much :)

  • Amy06/10/2009 at 15:51

I bet you look good on the dancefloor....

oh I know that one. Didn't have a clue who sung it.

I get WAY more obscure than that

is it rude to spend a whole roadtrip with my mp3 player on? ;)

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 15:52

I bet you look good on the dancefloor....

    With a $1M, who wouldn't?

  • Lukeh06/10/2009 at 15:52

    Lucky you!

    :D:D

  • Alison06/10/2009 at 15:52

I should hope so. Surely almost everyone can. They had the fastest selling album in this country ever. It's hardly obscure....

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 15:52

is it rude to spend a whole roadtrip with my mp3 player on? ;)

Well, I'll let you have some input, we may need a pre-trip clearance list

  • Nick06/10/2009 at 15:53

F1 Rocks = didn't clash with the race, and isn't responsible for Abu Dhabi ticket sales.

    It didnt clash?

That makes a lot more sense!

  • Alison06/10/2009 at 15:53

    It didnt clash?

It did a bit with quali but not with the race no.

  • Amy06/10/2009 at 15:54

Well, I'll let you have some input, we may need a pre-trip clearance list

I still listen to the music I liked 10 years ago and when I listen to the radio its a 'classic rock' station so I don't hear new music, ever. :D

I still listen to the music I liked 10 years ago and when I listen to the radio its a 'classic rock' station so I don't hear new music, ever. :D

I listen to podcasts. NEVER listen to the radio anymore. I listen to music occassionally, but it's all stuff I have.

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 15:55

I still listen to the music I liked 10 years ago and when I listen to the radio its a 'classic rock' station so I don't hear new music, ever. :D

I don't have an awful lot of new stuff, just a few select groups

  • Amy06/10/2009 at 15:55

That makes a lot more sense!

looks like there are still single tickets left in one section of one grandstand. You can still go if you are determined, and have AED1,900!

  • Amy06/10/2009 at 15:56

I don't have an awful lot of new stuff, just a few select groups

I'm googling and youtubing and it all sounds like the type of music I don't like. Hoooray for roadtrips! ;)

  • Nick06/10/2009 at 15:57

looks like there are still single tickets left in one section of one grandstand. You can still go if you are determined, and have AED1,900!

Unless they had wifi, when it could work, but i doubt they would, wifi hotopts only seem to exist at the airport....

Thats wrong, you can now get a months service, previously you had to buy 6 months miniumum.

however, since the iphone is not sold unlocked here yet, it wouldnt work anyways ;) (without epic roaming charges)

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 16:10

Hey. Whitmarsh is beginning to worry me about BMW.

    They want their Engine plant

    Hey RG

  • Nick06/10/2009 at 16:11

    They want their Engine plant

They could get it anyway, its not owned by qadbak, they want to use ferraris.

I think McLaren just want the IP, then build it in the UK

Yup. It's a matter of when, not if, I think.

Hello all, just catching up - Well Done to Alison for getting the job .

I see Alex has been to Central Perk but we also have some spam on the drop.

Not sure about the new Dr Who logo, perhaps it will grow on me.

Who put the "Five beautiful porcelain pigs" on the drop yesterday?

    I think that's everything so far ;)

    Thankyou :)

I'm also responsible for the pigs indirectly :P I was talking about making a piggy bank from papier mache. Someone showed me their piggy bank collection. I don't remember who.... The crafts have had to take a rain check unfortunately!

They have a good pedigree it seems. Historically involved in Aero Engine technology but also noteworthy road & race projects:

"transmissions and engines for motor sport and speed records, notably the consistently-successful Audi 24 Hours of Le Mans team, the JCB Dieselmax diesel land speed record holder,[1] and the DSG-type gearbox of the Bugatti Veyron."

You might be in the minority Jon

Though I like the idea of candidate debates. In practice it'll just be an exercise in spin

  • Janna06/10/2009 at 17:06

    Alex's comment from earlier

I thought it might be nice to go for a bit of a positive vibe today. So I would love to hear who your #F1Hero is. These could be serious like Fangio, or comical like Montoya's personal chef. But whatever they are the idea is to say who it is and why you think they are your #F1Hero.

My #F1Hero is Sir Frank Williams. He's dealt with a lot in his life but still runs a team that, whilst it may not be the most successful of late, is not just there to back up their other businesses (like selling road cars) but is there because they just want to go racing. I know he can be a bit of an outsider in the paddock but I like that about him as it's nice not to have someone who is just there to be corporate about their decisions all the time.

  • Jon Waldock06/10/2009 at 17:07

So you want your elections to grow to be 2+ years long? ;)

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 17:09

... it's nice not to have someone who is just there to be corporate about their decisions all the time.

    I totally agree

I'll always root for Williams to do well, even if they're not my favourite

  • Janna06/10/2009 at 17:09

Though I like the idea of candidate debates. In practice it'll just be an exercise in spin

I don't think this is right in our electoral system. They are not candidates because we are not electing a prime minister (or pseudo-president). We are supposed to vote for a party and their policies, not an individual

  • Jon Waldock06/10/2009 at 17:10

So you want your elections to grow to be 2+ years long? ;)

I love the US elections, 2 years is a bit extreme i agree, but atleast people get involved in the elections

  • Jon Waldock06/10/2009 at 17:11

I don't think this is right in our electoral system. They are not candidates because we are not electing a prime minister (or pseudo-president). We are supposed to vote for a party and their policies, not an individual

How would you get people involved in caring about politics then?

If there wasn't so much bull involved then maybe people would care a little more. The Commons is ridiculous

We aren't unique in that aspect though

  • Alison06/10/2009 at 17:16

Eurgh. Please don't mess with our electoral system. I got annoyed enough when everyone was insisting Gordon had no mandate. He obviously did as the system is for each region to elect their own MP. Members of each party choose their own leader from those elected. If you're voting for the PM, that's where you're going wrong. Rant over.

  • Nick06/10/2009 at 17:17

    yes sorry.

Why do you not think we should elect a PM?

  • Alex Andronov06/10/2009 at 17:18

The party leader is representing the manifesto though

In theory of course you are supposed to be voting for your local MP and that's it. We aren't supposed to have control of what happens nationally which is why what actually happens is so confused.

  • Janna06/10/2009 at 17:18

The party leader is representing the manifesto though

How would you get people involved in caring about politics then?

The British system has always been party based but recently there has been so much emphasis on the US that our PM is made to seem like a President when they are not. There is no problem with members of the party or even the party leaders having a debate so long as it does not make the election about the individual. For example. I may not like David Cameron per se but I may think that the Conservative manifesto contains the most policies that I agree with so I would choose to vote Conservative. Jon's comment illustrates what I think is wrong with the way the media portrays our politics. They should be telling us what each party represents not what David Cameron had for breakfast or whether Gordon Brown has had a row with Sarah. I'm not sure I've made my point well but I've typed enough now

  • Alison06/10/2009 at 17:20

Why do you not think we should elect a PM?

You should vote for the party. If you care enough about who should lead a particular party, join it and get your say that way.

  • Jon Waldock06/10/2009 at 17:20

I don't care what either had for breakfast or if they had a row, i care that people just don't go around thinking that we don't make a difference in elections, that their vote dosent count. I got excited because Gordon Brown has agreed to have a debate with the other 2 leaders, which never happened under Blair

  • Janna06/10/2009 at 17:20

Why do you not think we should elect a PM?

Because we have a head of state who is the Queen and we do not need a Presidential figure.

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 17:21

Why do you not think we should elect a PM?

PM doesn't have the power of Veto does he?

Because Mr C and Christine aren't here can I please vote that we stop talking politics as it really is a very inflaming issue.

    Just my two cents. Cheers.

In addition, the party can choose to oust him and vote someone else in without explaining their actions to you or anyone else. You don't get to decide.

So (playing DA here) it's not that much of a democratic society if i only get to choose 1 person of 600?

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 17:24

So, what have Williams tried to veto today? :)

  • Alison06/10/2009 at 17:25

So (playing DA here) it's not that much of a democratic society if i only get to choose 1 person of 600?

Meh. It's just the way it works. This isn't a political issue, it's constitutional. You should decide what's important to you in your local area and elect your local MP accordinly.

  • jpancoast06/10/2009 at 17:25

We want something LESS contentious than British politics :)

But thats my point, i'm happy with the current local guy, but what happens if the local guy is from the party who nationally i dont want to vote for. It just makes it a stupid system

  • Jon Waldock06/10/2009 at 17:31

I understand your point, how would you improve it?

Well i'd make it atleast a primary system for the leader of each party i guess.

  • Alison06/10/2009 at 17:31

But thats my point, i'm happy with the current local guy, but what happens if the local guy is from the party who nationally i dont want to vote for. It just makes it a stupid system

In my opinion, if they're doing good work in your local area then it's just something abstractly ideological that's stopping you voting for them. On balance, you're probably better off keeping your local champion. That said, they probably hold a lot of the views that their party leadership do and that's something you have to weigh up for yourself. You're never going to find someone to vote for that agrees with you on every count. You need to prioritise your needs and vote accordingly. Failing that, stand for election or, if you really can't decide on someone, go along and void your ballot.

  • Alex Andronov06/10/2009 at 17:32

But thats not always true, my local guy is a conservative and does great work, but my brother is labour but loves the local guy. Labour and Conservative views nationally are different, so how does he vote? I know your point, it's just a silly system

    Definitely no politics.

And thanks Alex for being our stand in.

    Already talking about good setup.

Radio Lukeh, live from Monaco :)

I used to be up to date with the music scene. It gets harder when mortgages and life get in the way :)

It got harder when the method for following it fractured into so many different sources instead of just listening to the Evening Session on R1 (which I did all too rarely anyway). The plus side is anyone can listen to whatever they want, and instead of one genre being cool and trendy it is seen as cool to have a varied taste.

It is easier to discover new stuff now. I remember when most of my info came from The NME

We've never had access to Xfm. My sister who lived in London for a few years kept raving about it. I know you can get it online, but it takes effort to start the habit and learn the shows.

    (i'm not here)

to be honest, to me the biggest issue is timing. rather than the subject matter.

i think alex was on the right track kicking the day off with a fun game. sidepodcast should be a chilled out, fun and relaxing place to hang out. yesterday i found the place really, really stressful.

so to kick off less than 24 hours later on the heavy subject of politics is probably not a smart idea. although i did laugh at bassano's:

"it's going to be a six month build-up to the election isn't it? :("

...given our comments yesterday about discussing events that won't be happening anytime soon.

how about we have a rule that heavy subjects can only be discussed on the back of lighter subjects like i-spy or something? i dunno. i am +1 for please no politics today. and i'm not even here.

be funny, have fun, enjoy. and i'm gone again.

Go Lukeh. FIA still have influence over sportscars it;s just not high profile enough for them to take the level of interest they do in F1. Anything that gives Ari a platform is good and if Lukeh's talent gets a bigger audience that's good to.

Evening all, I bring a new story from Orange. Make of it what you will:

"Although Toyota had not committed themselves to keeping Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock next season, it was expected that Glock would actually stay on.

But his error in qualifying at the Japanese Grand Prix appears to be the final straw for team boss John Howett.

The German now looks destined for a place at the rebranded BMW Sauber team alongside Nick Heidfeld while Toyota have a dream driver line-up planned in Robert Kubica and Kimi Raikkonen.

However, a lack of funds at Toyota, whose budget have been cut by their parent company, will leave them aiming their sights considerably lower."

I think Quad Bike are only in it for the investment. Strip the company of it's assets when things pick up

    I hope I'm wrong

  • Steven Roy06/10/2009 at 19:03

Do you really think there is any substance to the rumuoured Macca BMW wheeling and dealing? Denial means nothing - how many times did Alonso say he had not contract with Ferrari?

We know McLaren is looking to establish an engine operation and if they can pick up all the IP from a current engine that will save them a fortune.so I am sure they woud be interested as they would if Toyota or Renault pulled out. The attraction of Gilles Simon is that he will have a headful of data on th Ferrari engine and the planned developments so merging the two should give them an instantly competitive engine.

  • Rich06/10/2009 at 19:04

Who makes a decision on a driver based on one error more or less?

Lewis has made three mistakes this year that costs significant points - one might have been under team guidance? How many mistakes has Sutil made? If I see Sutil he is inevitably making a mistake. Timo and Nick are two of the most error-free drivers. I think it is very honest that Timo said I made a mistake I was looking at my display.

They were only interest in getting out without losing much investment. I am sure they would sell their engine IP as well. Probably not a bad engine, although their KERS was a failure. Apparently the KERS that Mercedes uses was developed by Zytec - so no wonder it is so awesome.

  • Rich06/10/2009 at 19:07

Is it known who actually developed the new McLaren engine? I have to say the Merc and the McLaren do not seem to be head on competitors.

I don't know anything about the Merc that was launched but I have read a couple of articles saying Mercedes were not happy about the timing of the McLaren launch as they saw the McLaren as a competing car.

They will be in the supercar market

McLaren looks more of a real supercar (looks Ferrari like) whereas the Merc seems like a plush super sports car.

I have no taste so I like the Lotus Evora and the IFR Aspid.

To go where? He is not going to get a competitive rally car for obvious reasons.

But it would be a fresh challenge

I think we'll see him back at Woking

Have a look at this one from Orange as well:

"McLaren could be set for a U-turn on Heikki Kovalainen for next season.

The team had been expected to re-sign Kimi Raikkonen following his departure from Ferrari, but there appears to be a stumbling block over his pay demands.

McLaren have tabled what they believe to be a fair offer for the Finn, who is keen to increase that salary or otherwise leave F1 altogether.

As a result, Kovalainen could yet get himself a one-year extension although at present he is only the back-up plan for the team."

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 19:26

In he £150k plus field, their after similar wallets

  • Rich06/10/2009 at 19:27

I think we'll see him back at Woking

I think it is possible, but he does have quite a bit to lose (he will the second driver and therefore needs to be better than Lewis to keep his reputation) and I think the fresh challenge of doing something different will have huge appeal.

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 19:27

  • Steven Roy06/10/2009 at 19:28

But it would be a fresh challenge

No-one is going to give him a competitive rally car because he has no experience. A dew rallies in a FIAT is not suitable preparation for a championship assault in a top line team.

Kimi is an F1 driver and until F1 is out of his system that is what he will remain. I don't see him as a Stephane Sarrazin who will do F1, sportscars and rallying. He may dabble in other forms of the sport but F1 will be his focus for a while yet. If I was in his place I would be doing everything I could to make sure Ferrari had to pay me a fat bonus next year for taking the championship from them.

  • Rich06/10/2009 at 19:29

In he £150k plus field, their after similar wallets

I still see them as slightly different - the McLaren is clearly aiming to take sales away from Ferrari and Lamborghini.

  • jpancoast06/10/2009 at 19:29

That would be a stupid move. They know he is not good enough so they may as well sign someone else and try them. At least then there is a chance they will get someone who can push Lewis

I think they will be evenly matched. All the top drivers are comvinced they are the best so I don't think Lewis will figure in his thinking. If he leaes F1 now he is going to spend the rest of his life answering questions about why Ferrari dumped him and paid him not to race and why he walked away from F1 like that rather than fought to prove they had made a mistake.

  • Rich06/10/2009 at 19:33

The McLaren does look REAL nice.

To me nice but not hugely original in styling - nothing like the impact the McLaren F1 had. Gordon Murray has also said as much - slightly disappointing. In the are where I live there is a Koenigsegg CCX - that is exciting looking car.

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 19:33

Love the look of the Koenigsegg as well

Ferrari dumped him due to his lack of popularity with the Tifosi and Alonso was available. Personally I think it is a silly reason - Alonso to me spells trouble and very high maintenance. He is not that good a driver to be worth it all.

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 19:37

Alonso in the Ferrari of the early part of this decade would have been OK but with the current Ferrari team I can see the whole thing imploding spectacularly and him leaving before th end of his contract.

  • Steven Roy06/10/2009 at 19:41

I am not a great fan of R8 from looks but yea there is soe similarity - I think it R8 is probably a really good car but not its looks.

I like the basic look of the R8 but I don't understand the stupid panel behind the door in a contrast colour. That just makes it look plasticky

  • Rich06/10/2009 at 19:41

Sorry but his handling of the Singapore victory has really cheapened his race track success for me. He is not honest either, but then neither is Nico which surprised me - I thought better of him.

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 19:42

Do not like its fairy lights - neat styling is trashed with terrible design details.

LED lights are gaining popularity, they can be done in better ways than that though

  • Rich06/10/2009 at 19:47

    You think Nico was lying?

of course - he is not stupid - any drivers knows within a couple of tenths how fast their lap speeds are without the need for digital displays. Williams gambled with the organisers that they would not penalise so that Brawn won the championship under a penalty as fans do not like this. A great and brave psychological victory - but then I thought Renault's fixing was brilliant strategically.

  • Rich06/10/2009 at 19:48

Lotus has LED lights and it looks great - but as I said the Evora and Exige are to me great looking cars!

you see I like the latter Elise and the Exige - sure it has almost comically enhanced bulges - its styling that is a bit over the top but that what I like. Now I really like the ASPID - its not beautiful (in any conventional sense) but it is an awesome car (just the headlights which are terrible).

He went through the sector too fast. He slowed down a bit but not enough. He should have been penalised

  • Rich06/10/2009 at 20:01

That's not what the stewards' report said

Stewards wording could be interpreted in a variety of ways - they were cheating and got away with it. All's fair in racing - I just do not like statements like Nico said afterwards I slowed down blah blah blah (ly my omission rather than commission) - it is as much lying as what Lewis did at Australia and Piquet did (after his crash) when he said he made a mistake.

Im not saying turn F1 into nascar. Just get some people who know more about running motorsport to run it!

  • Rich06/10/2009 at 20:47

It looks a bit like a DeLorean. I like DeLoreans.

way way uglier - DeLorean had something the Renault is just plastic junk which is why Jeremy Clarkson did a Nelsinho to one.

  • Rich06/10/2009 at 20:48

I'd like to see Tilke design an oval.

Yes it would be more interesting than his normal designs.

  • Andy Taylor06/10/2009 at 20:48

It looks a bit like a DeLorean. I like DeLoreans.

I like the Alpine A310. The DeLorean was basically a Lotus Esprit with some Ford Cortina parts.

I once worked for the guy who worked at DeLorean, he had one as his company car!

  • Christine06/10/2009 at 20:49

I once worked for the guy who worked at DeLorean, he had one as his company car!

That would be quite a car to turn up in the car park with.

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 20:49

I once worked for the guy who worked at DeLorean, he had one as his company car!

Lots of Back to the Future jokes?

  • Rich06/10/2009 at 20:51

I think you and I have polar opposite tastes ;)

makes the world interesting - it was particularly ugly example and an incredibly unflattering photo - its just awkward in every line!

  • Andy Taylor06/10/2009 at 20:51

Lots of Back to the Future jokes?

Not really, by the time I worked for him he was the FD of a medical company and drove a Granada.

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 20:51

Not really, by the time I worked for him he was the FD of a medical company and drove a Granada.

Not much of a step up then :D

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 20:52

    makes the world interesting -

    It does indeed

    Vive la difference!

  • Rich06/10/2009 at 20:52

    The original was lovely too

Agreed - I had a Scalextric one of those and Ford GT40 when I was a kid - it is gorgeous.

  • Jon Waldock06/10/2009 at 20:53

    Evening all

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 20:53

Im not saying turn F1 into nascar. Just get some people who know more about running motorsport to run it!

    Sounds too logical for F1

Plus, it'd end up being sponsored by Hob-Nobs or something

    No thanks

  • Nick06/10/2009 at 20:53

I cant help but think these are a bad idea... http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2009/10/tiny_lighter_cufflinks.html

    No thanks

Lucazade mega prix at the 'stone?

I dont rally mind about the sponsorship. there is so much decent owners coud bring to the sport in terms of TV content, fan access, Data, information, ticket prices...

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 20:57

I cant help but think these are a bad idea... http://blog.ma...ighter_cufflinks.html

    Definitely

I had some cufflinks that had "Headache" inscribed on one and "hangover" on the other.

You could unscrew the top to hold your aspirin. Great idea!

Wish I knew where they were

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 20:58

    Yes, it's actively encouraged

It is sort of like being exiled to outer Mongolia - have you ever been to Charlotte North Carolina?

    And advertising

"Welcome to Lap 1 of the Fuji TV McVities Bet365 Japanese Grand Prix 53 from the Apple Suzuka Race Course, here's a break"

meant South Carolina sorry - in Afrikaans there is an expression translated that says "nice from far but far from nice" That summarises the place.

  • Nick06/10/2009 at 21:02

I guess we are not really going to get a reasonable debate here ;)

Product placement is being introduced in the UK, it's a slippery slope

That makes a lot of sense.

I couldnt understand why you could show f1 driver drinking out of their sponsored bottles and football teams wering their branded kits but not show a soap actor doing the washing with Daz...

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 21:06

I had lots of Muse stuff on my old account yet amazingly it was Fox broadcasting that got mine shut down for a 10 second clip from Simpsons apparently

  • Rich06/10/2009 at 21:09

Oh, I thought you were just supporting him :)

I think he has done wrong he also needs a break from all the criticism - many drivers have done worse but because they were rather better they were excused (Senna, Prost Schumacher). He needs to stand up for himself and particularly to his old man and just be a stronger person.

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 21:09

We don't know how many good [but used] engines he has. I can't see them opting for a fresh one

  • Pat W06/10/2009 at 21:27

I'd like to see Tilke design an oval.

Heheh. Really long straight with a slow corner at the end.... Avus?

  • Rich06/10/2009 at 21:27

I know I am in the minority here but Mr Vatanen really does not convince me. He may be a nice guy and all of that, but I just find him really naive (sort of a yellow canary being released with a few Peregrines circulating around). Is it better to have the knave that the poison toad is - I really do not know.

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 21:27

    I sense an administrative error

    And a dressing down ;)

  • me06/10/2009 at 21:29

    I sense an administrative error

    and this is just mean:

"Finnish journalist Heikki Kulta was expecting to get a lift to the airport in Kimi Raikkonen’s helicopter, but Kimi told him prior to the race that he’d been bumped off the flight. It’s now touch and go as to whether Heikki will make his flight to Helsinki this evening. "

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 21:30

I know I am in the minority here but Mr Vatanen really does not convince me.

He's not Toadt and I think he genuinely means well

Doesn't seem the power hungry sort like Max and his protegé

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)06/10/2009 at 21:31

I know I am in the minority here but Mr Vatanen really does not convince me.

He's not endorsed by Max. Win.

  • Jon Waldock06/10/2009 at 21:31

On my mixer, the lights go Green (20) Green (0) Orange (6) Red (CLIP).

Is it bad if it goes to Clip?

  • me06/10/2009 at 21:32

Is it bad if it goes to Clip?

    very.

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 21:32

Is it bad if it goes to Clip?

    Sound levels? Yes

  • Jon Waldock06/10/2009 at 21:33

    very.

ah. because before i was trying to keep it in the green's but y'all said it was too quiet...?

  • Andy Taylor06/10/2009 at 21:33

Is it bad if it goes to Clip?

Yes. Try to keep it at the top end of the Green with occasional Orange.

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 21:33

I wonder if Ferrari will have Eau d'Alonso by Father's Day in their stores?

  • Rich06/10/2009 at 21:34

Doesn't seem the power hungry sort like Max and his protegé

But he is having to deal with some power hungry types, I think he is not strategic enough - he undoubtedly pulls on the old emotional heart strings bit but I think you need more than that to be a good administrator. Could end up being a pawn and then not furthering the interests of the sport.

  • Andy Taylor06/10/2009 at 21:34

ah. because before i was trying to keep it in the green's but y'all said it was too quiet...?

You should be able to normalise the audio on output, this will boost the levels up.

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 21:34

ah. because before i was trying to keep it in the green's but y'all said it was too quiet...?

Lots of Orange with no red?

  • Jon Waldock06/10/2009 at 21:35

Lots of Orange with no red?

Thats generally what it is, with occational red, but i do try and keep it off there

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 21:35

Could end up being a pawn and then not furthering the interests of the sport.

It's almost a given that Todt will be bad

    I'd give Ari a shot

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 21:35

Thats generally what it is, with occational red, but i do try and keep it off there

Turn it down a smidgen perhaps

  • Steven Roy06/10/2009 at 21:36

Heheh. Really long straight with a slow corner at the end.... Avus?

The corners at Avus were high banked and fast originally

  • Jon Waldock06/10/2009 at 21:36

    I like playing devil advocate....

It's almost a given that Todt will be bad

It's assumed, it's definitely not guarenteed.

    I'd give Ari a shot

I gave up with F1 along time ago, he's going to have to be super good to make me really interested again

  • Andy Taylor06/10/2009 at 21:36

The corners at Avus were high banked and fast originally

    But Tilke soon fixed that?

  • Jon Waldock06/10/2009 at 21:37

Turn it down a smidgen perhaps

I turn the main mix down, so it keeps it off there, then i guess i just turn it up a bit in audacity when i'm putting it out?

  • Steven Roy06/10/2009 at 21:39

I know I am in the minority here but Mr Vatanen really does not convince me. He may be a nice guy and all of that, but I just find him really naive (sort of a yellow canary being released with a few Peregrines circulating around). Is it better to have the knave that the poison toad is - I really do not know.

He is not naive. He is very astute. He is a Finn who managed to get elected to the European Parliament for a French constituency

  • Rich06/10/2009 at 21:39

It's almost a given that Todt will be bad

That Todt is being endorsed by Max is a really bad thing. Todt is an astute fella, if not a very nice one and will be his own boss (forget that he is a disciple of Max - that is just propaganda). I was very disappointed with Ari on his environmental agenda - he is old school conservative and I am not sure that is long-term good for the sport.

  • me06/10/2009 at 21:39

Thats generally what it is, with occational red, but i do try and keep it off there

He is not naive. He is very astute. He is a Finn who managed to get elected to the European Parliament for a French constituency

A failed European Member of Parliament is not much of endorsement. He pulls at the old heart strings and is probably a good guy just not very smart.

if any f1 bloggers out there are looking for legitimate ways to use formula one pics in their posts without costing the earth, you'd do well to check out PicApp: http://picapp.com/

the images are completely free and legal to use. it's easier if you have a wordpress.com blog, but it should work in all software. choose a picture, copy the code and picapp sorts out the rest.

He is addressing a particular audience but it is clear from the things being said by th people who have come out to support him that he is saying more meaningful stuff to them. I have absolutely no doubt he will be a success and finally move the FIA off the course chosen by Balestre and Mosley

The circumstances are very different - to be successful in F1 you have lie and cheat. Some of the stuff guys like Colin Chapman did etc are scandalous. No team and no driver is completely honest - it would be too much of competitive disadvantage. I think there is less reason for Todt to be untrustworthy as the FIA president and I think he will have more insight into some of the tricks that could be perpetrated. That does not mean I want him in as FIA president- I like neither candidate for the position.

We need a bit of honesty here when he replaced Balestre he was a breath of fresh air. He brought lots of safety to the sport (and interestingly environmental considerations). He simply outlived his sell-by data by a considerable number of years.

No question Ari is the popular choice - but to secure presidency it is about allegiances and power struggles. Personally I think we will get Todt, he could be terrible, but lets not prejudge. In my books Ari really lacks long-term vision, Todt has not really disclose this as yet. Many are supporting Ari as a knee-jerk reaction to Max without analysing what he has to say.

  • Steven Roy06/10/2009 at 22:20

We need a bit of honesty here when he replaced Balestre he was a breath of fresh air. He brought lots of safety to the sport (and interestingly environmental considerations). He simply outlived his sell-by data by a considerable number of years.

He only carried on the sagety work that was already going on. Max generates a lot of hype about safety and the suggestion is always that it was horrifically dangerous till he arrived. Ther was not a death at a GP from 1982 to 1994. Max had nothing to do with that. All he did was one of his massive knee jerk reactions after Senna died.

His interest in environmentalism is a very recent development. He banned KERS 10 years before he introduced it because it was against the ethos of F1. Green strips on tyres are not environementally friendly.

If you look at the best thing he did during his time in office it had nothing to do with F1. It was the Euro NCAP road car crash testing ratings.

There is nothing he has done in F1 where you can demonstrate that he was better than Balestre. At least Balestre stood up to Bernie and kept him under control.

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 22:20

Personally I think we will get Todt, he could be terrible, but lets not prejudge.

Not quite as recent as you might suppose FIA has been Carbon trading to offsets its carbon output for a long time. Sure the green strips on the tyre are a joke. Max self-promotes but increased safety has followed the tragic death of Senna.

You are right the new incumbent needs to stand up Bernie!

  • Nick06/10/2009 at 22:27

Carbon trading is not being environmentaly aware, it is money laundering to get environmentalists rich.

I fear we I am slipping back into discussing real politics though so i will desist

  • Rich06/10/2009 at 22:31

Unfotunately, I agree but it's hard to trust him

There is not a single team principal that I would really trust (Mario is the closest). Peter Sauber was probably the last really good guy. He did things to pioneer safety over performance which I cannot see happening today. He introduced significant corporate social responsibility into his F1 programme. That is why it is sad to see the team sold to some shadowy outfit.

  • Rich06/10/2009 at 22:36

Carbon trading is not being environmentaly aware, it is money laundering to get environmentalists rich.

Carbon trading does bring some benefit to impoverished parts of the world in terms of job creation. It can enhance resource bases for sustainable livelihoods. The problem is how it is executed and of course you are right middle man profiteering is rampant. I am not sure about the wealth of environmentalists - it is mostly brokered by engineers. As a strategy for actual environmental amelioration is weak but it can be an instrument for social upliftment.

  • Steven Roy06/10/2009 at 22:37

Carbon offsetting is a joke. They offset the carbon dioxide produced from the cars and the flights etc. None of that registers compared to the amount produced by wind tunnels and Honda had 5 of them running last year. All he has ever done is offer a sop to environmentalism.

There is no doubt Max took a lot of action on safety after Senna's death and not all of it good. I have argued since the week following that crash when the FIA first started putting out mesaages on safety that there was nothin else he could do and in fact his aim all along was self-preservation rather than a genuine interest in safety.

It was hardly unpredictable that someone would hit the wall at Tamburello and die. Piquet had a very serious accident there and after that Berger hit the wall and and his car burst into flames and burned for more than 30 seconds before the marshals turned up.

Why should someone be given credit for taking action after a fatal accident when people were screaming for it to be taken after the previous accidents. No-one who was president of the FIA that Monday morning could do anything other than make safety a priority. Once he saw the response he got in the press he has kept plugging safety.

Carbon trading is based on planting trees that will absorb carbon dioxide over their life time. That assumes they will live that long but in the meantime the carbon dioxide produced today can be in the atmosphere for 20 years before it is absorbed. Carbon trading is like giving a beggar a buck. Clears the conscience but achieves nothing.

That is so simplistic and a eurocentric view. Tree-planting can bring huge benefits (in the right environment), from erosion contro, soi nutrient enrichment to food security (if say fruit trees are planted) to sources of fuel and medicines for local communities etc. Simply the act of employing people to plant the trees provides benefit to local economy. I do not disagree about its ability to absorb atmospheric carbon - certainly benefits are released only in the longer term.

Unfortunatly that isnt the full story.

Money from carbon trading is usulay funnelled into environmental charities who fullfill the purpose of offsetting trees, however they also put money up for environmental research into global warming and the like.

Unsurprisingly they want this to support global warming theories so they select researchers who will get them the results they want and conveniently not publish results which could be problematic. These carbon offsetters caryy a lot of cash, and this has corrupted a lot of research into global warming.

People often say you cant trust some findings because they were funded by the oil industry, equally i would say you cant trust any funded by carbon offsetters, leaving very little reliable research over the past 10-15 years, and a lot of wealthy environmentalists.

There are all sorts of benefits but I am talking only about the carbon absorption. What is the point of planting new trees while allowing rain forests to be destroyed. It would make a lot more sense to use the carbon offsetting money to buy up sections of rainforest.

The sun's behaviour changes a lot more than you think. There is an 11 year sun spot cycle and various other things that affect the Earth. We are in the middle of an unexpectedly long solar minimimum for example which I have seen no mention of in any environmentalist literature.

The real solution is to provide sufficient economic opportunities without the need for forest destruction in the developing world. I am not completely sold on the idea that simply planting trees is the solution to our carbon emissions. In fact it can actually have the opposite effect. A bit complex to explain but you actually need individual ecosystems across the to have a carbon target. Of course none of this will reverse trends like ice cap melting at poles and mountain tops at best it will slow down the process due to negative feedback processes. I am always surprised that people want to raise the issue of weather it is human-induced or not. Its not very relevant, simply as atmospheric carbon rises, ocean acidity increases and this will release carbon from the sea accelerating further atmospheric carbon build up. We are on a slippery slope. What is not fully understood are tipping points which have the potential to unleash very unpredictable events. Sea storm surge could be one such event.

  • Bassano Clapper06/10/2009 at 23:12

Absolutely. There should be an interantional campaign to stop the destruction of the rainforests now using international aid and to plant sustainable woodland on the forest that has already been cleared

  • Rich06/10/2009 at 23:18

There is a fundamental flaw in all global warming theories. Everything is based on the Earth with no thought of how the sun is changing.

Of course we cannot change how the sun behaves, but we can reduce the amount of greenhouse gases. It is a seriously complex field so sadly both sides of the debate have been trivialised.

  • Steven Roy06/10/2009 at 23:18

I was only giving sun spots as an example of changes in the sun's behaviour. There is an assumption that the sun is constant and it is not.

Of course we cannot change how the sun behaves, but we can reduce the amount of greenhouse gases. It is a seriously complex field so sadly both sides of the debate have been trivialised.

I am not arguing about what we have to do only that the data and in many cases the suppositions it is based on is flawed. Common sense dictates that even if global temperature was not affected it is still a bad idea to pollute the atmosphere.

  • Rich06/10/2009 at 23:23

I was only giving sun spots as an example of changes in the sun's behaviour. There is an assumption that the sun is constant and it is not.

I know of Climate Change scientist that excludes background climate shifts, these have been going on since the cretaceous extinctions (when the dinosaurs died out). The ascendency of mammals is largely due to their ability to cope with faster shifts of climate.

One issue that I am surprised that has not been more widely reviewed is global-dimming - BBC Horizon a few years back showed a good documentary.

  • Rich06/10/2009 at 23:28

Sorry meant to say I know of NO Climate Change scientist that ignores natural climatic shifts. Simply the wobbles of the earth on its axis will cause these. Sun spot activity is difficult to directly ascribe causality. My speculation is that it has less influence that would seem intuitive. In contrast say volcanic activity could have a big impact (which we also cannot control for).

  • Steven Roy06/10/2009 at 23:30

One issue that I am surprised that has not been more widely reviewed is global-dimming - BBC Horizon a few years back showed a good documentary.

I saw that. There are all sorts of factors at play but carbon dioxide is always the one that gets the blame. NASA published some stuff recently that backs a theory that I have had for a while that aerosols in the atmosphere may have a greater effect than greenhouse gases

We understand the behaviour of Carbon Dioxide - Methane is four-time more effective as a forcing agent for raising temperature. Aerosols have contributed to reduced income-solar radiation, the significance of which are altered global climate regimes. There is no question if the warm gulf stream were "switched off" as predicted by melting of ice caps and fresh water intrusions - the UK's climate would be catastrophically altered.

My #F1Hero is the guy who decides the music on the BBC – hasn’t it been brilliant this year?
