We're into the weekend now, and I realise I haven't asked what you're all doing? Our plans are naturally structured around the Formula 1, but perhaps there are others out there who might be... gasp... going outside or something. Let us know, anyway.

  • As it turns out, Force India have done a Williams and entered the 2010 championship regardless of what FOTA are trying to acheive. It looks as though the team will get suspended from the association, leaving them with just eight members still in the conditional entry. Will that be enough to turn Max's head?
  • There appears to be a significant lack of grip on the softer tyres in Turkey, although some teams found the two compounds very similar. With Bridgestone bringing compounds two steps apart, it seems to have caused nothing but trouble so far this season.
  • It is qualifying day, and that means before the knockout phases get underway, we have to make our predictions in the Sofa F1 Pole Poll. Simply state who you think will be on pole and the top eight finishers in the race. It's just a bit of fun, and the chances are you won't get all eight right!

That'll do it for now. There'll be a Joe Show along at some point today, along with plenty of other podcasting goodness, so keep your eyes peeled. I'll see you in the comments.

    Hello 6th.

Morning. I have to find time to watch 2 hours of Ashes to Ashes, 90 mins of CSI inbetween Free Practice, Qualifying, the cricket and the darts.

I can never be that focussed with my TV watching. Or anything else for that matter. This (and studies) is why I have a mega backlog.

    Joe Montego's a her?

Funny story. My mum used to have to cold call as part of her old job and was given a name to call as this person was a customer of the company. She didn't know it at the time, but this guy was my boss and just before the office admin lady transferred the call mum asked her "Is Joe a man then?" to which everybody laughed about ... including Joe who thought it very amusing (luckily!) :D

Dude, that's Penske they're talking about in Motorsports. Penske are worthy of being an F1 team, they're so good.

These guys win Indy almost every year, have had a decent run in NASCAR, ALMS and now Grand Am and were successful in F1 on the 70's...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 23:59

Penske are apparently only there as a filler while Porsche re-enter the ALMS.

fair enough, i'm looking forward to some racing this weekend, so sick of politics in sport. give me politics on its own and i'm there, but mix it with sport and it gets annoying

    ya know, this and that.

  • Jon Waldock06/06/2009 at 00:08

Penske Bought Saturn,( the planet not the console)

    What?!?!

  • Steven Roy06/06/2009 at 00:08

better than zero wins (I'm looking at you, Toyota!)

Better than Toyota but no-one would claim they were a sucess. penske was really only doing F1 for his driver and after he died the F1 program only lasted a short time. Shame the court cases were not over as quickly.

  • Nick06/06/2009 at 00:09

    What?!?!

Oops, sorry i meant car manufacturer :P

  • Steven Roy06/06/2009 at 00:09

It is a GM brand. He didn't buy a planet. Even he isn't that rich yet.

  • Jon Waldock06/06/2009 at 00:10

    It is a GM brand.

    ahh ok, fair enough.

apparently Chevy are still going to race at Le Mans which is great, GT1 class is dieing so it'll be good to see them there for it's last go.

So is coming over from the states and challenging the top teams with a decent car not successful? I guess we'll never know for sure because they didn't stick at it but I'm convinced by the way they conducted themselves in other motorsports that it should have been...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)06/06/2009 at 00:15

    from wikipedia:

For 1976, Penske signed a sponsorship deal with Citibank and entered a brand new PC3 for Watson. In spite of a fifth place scored at the South African GP at Kyalami, the PC3 was evolved into the PC4, which was much more competitive, allowing Watson to score two podiums in France and Britain. Then, in the Austrian Grand Prix, the team scored their only F1 win, "forcing" John Watson to shave his trademark beard. Still, Roger Penske was tired of Europe and at the end of the year decided to concentrate solely on Indycar racing, selling the remains of his European operations to Günther Schmidt of Germany.

  • Steven Roy06/06/2009 at 00:15

I wouldn't argue that they couldn't have been succesful simply that winning one race is not success. otherwise Toro Rosso are a succes as are numerous others.

I wouldn't argue that they couldn't have been succesful simply that winning one race is not success. otherwise Toro Rosso are a succes as are numerous others.

Perhaps we should measure their success on the fact they got John Watson to shave off his beard - that was an enormous success!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)06/06/2009 at 00:18

    Ahh stats-based problems!

  • Pat W06/06/2009 at 00:19

I just read the daily post and it reminded me to to do the SofaF1 pole, which I haven't done for a while (I keep forgetting). After entering I noticed the scores for Monaco and Spain. Apparently I scored points without even entering?

  • Steven Roy06/06/2009 at 00:19

Penske set up the team for Mark Donohue but Donohue was killed I thin in Austria the year before Watson won. After that there was not the same impetus behind the F1 program. It was not helped by the fact that Donohue's wife sued everyone she thought could possibly be responsible and some of the cases went on for many years. She sued the tyre company (Goodyear?) Bell crash helmets etc etc. I am sure Penske was less than thrilled to spend so much time dealing with lawyers.

It always amazed me after that, tat anyone gaver her son a drive in anything. Who needs that kind of hassle especially for a driver who was nothing special and not a patch on his father?

There are a lot of drivers of equal ability whose mothers don't have a totally unrealistic view of racing safety an d who should carry the can if something happened to her boy. If you are big enough to get in a race car you are big enough to accept the responsibility of whatever happens.

Just one point i was going to make a few days ago about lightspeed (f1 entry). Everyones been very negative towards them (me included) but really the reason they're doing so badly is dallara, Dallara own every single manufacturer out there, it's just customer cars coming into f1, everyone buying brawn and then a new guy coming in. of course they're going to be rubbish, dallara have hundreds of cars to get info from, litespeed....they have 2.

Arguments are fun. If you believe something you should argue it. Doesn't matter if you are wrong. Sometimes it is fun to argue the wrong side of a point just to find out whether you are right or not.

erm not quite. joe is now writing for the paddock magazine. we've been subscribing for a few years, but he's only just started contributing i think.

the people behind the mag used to work for bernie's magazine before he canned it. we discussed all of this on a previous "aside", but don't ask me to quote which one.

True, that and the empty stands in China and Malaysia. When you think that tracks like Spa have missed out in recent years, Imola's gone and Silverstone / BGP in general is under threat it makes me very very mad. They'd all be sell-outs

  • Scott Woodwiss06/06/2009 at 09:28

If I had to choose which NASCAR tracks I wanted alongside the ones we already have (Daytona, Indy and Infineon), I'd want Bristol, Talladega and Watkins Glen. They're the only good ones I can think of.

If I had to choose which NASCAR tracks I wanted alongside the ones we already have (Daytona, Indy and Infineon), I'd want Bristol, Talladega and Watkins Glen. They're the only good ones I can think of.

My favourite oval on Race Driver 3 (and 'my favourite oval' is like saying 'my favourite dictator') is Indi, mainly because if you turn the downforce up on any car you can get round without having to brake, so you always win :D

  • Scott Woodwiss06/06/2009 at 09:35

My favourite oval on Race Driver 3 (and 'my favourite oval' is like saying 'my favourite dictator') is Indi, mainly because if you turn the downforce up on any car you can get round without having to brake, so you always win :D

Still, the lineup of tracks GT5 has so far is impressive:

    Laguna Seca

    Nurburgring Nordschleife

    Suzuka

    Indianapolis

    Daytona

    Le Mans

Now we just need Silverstone, Monza, Spa and Bathurst. Also just thinking - GT has always included JGTC/Super GT cars. Do they actually have the official licence for that series or do they just include their cars based on if the manufacturer will let them?

  • Scott Woodwiss06/06/2009 at 09:35

Still, the lineup of tracks GT5 has so far is impressive:

    Laguna Seca

    Le Mans

Seca is always on them, and Le Mans was on GT4 i believe. Apart from Suzauka and Nurburgring i'm not too bothered to be honest. But then i won't buy it anyway, so it dosen't make a huge difference!

Yup, just saying in general, it's very likely all the tracks from GT4 will get retained, or all the popular ones at least. Seca's been in GT since GT2, Suzuka, Le Mans and Nordschleife came in GT4, Daytona in GT5P and Indy just spotted in the E3 trailer.

Sadly I think it's small change to him, his moneys generated by extorting the money out of circuits and selling tv coverage.

I often wonder if he realises that the fans, and generating new ones keep F1 alive.

I'm doing a roast lamb for dinner tomorrow with potatoes, pumpkin, kumara, cabbage, carrots and gravy. If I remember to go to the supermarket. I've never had a yorkshire pud in my life :D

  • me06/06/2009 at 13:03

make some. Amy, have you learnt what buttermilk is yet? :)

    make bread?

    At cricket?

  • Scott Woodwiss06/06/2009 at 13:03

Forza 3 update - they've gone into partnership with Audi, and in this article about a 24 hour race taking place at the Audi Forum in New York, there's some nice renders/screenshots of the R10

    It's not that hard.

  • RG06/06/2009 at 13:04

NZ, thrashed them in the end. Was only 7 over a side.

    You have to try it

  • Scott Woodwiss06/06/2009 at 13:05

Plus, there is going to be an announcement at Le Mans regarding FM3. XBOX 360 sponsors the Peugeot team, so it could either be Peugeot or Le Mans related. Most likely to be the latter.

My instinct tells me - Le Mans will be in FM3.

  • RG06/06/2009 at 13:05

I'll investigate how to make them and will consider it for tomorrow.

Aunt Bessies make premade ones. They're good, but make them yourself. They're not hard - look up the batter receipe online then:

Heat the tray and oil in the oven so it's piping...

    Mix in the tray(s)

In the oven and DON'T OPEN UNTIL THEY'RE COOKED (20ish mins IIRC)

Serve with meat and gravy. Yum...

So yum I think I need to hit Toby Carvery now....

isn't the batter recipe basically the same as a pancake recipe? (this could have been something i made up in my head)

  • Amy06/06/2009 at 13:13

I bet my F1-pub would have them with their roast dinners. I should go there for a meal one night as well as a race.

looks like i started something. i think we're turning this into a cooking chat room again. I make bread (not often) , but i don't think we should react to much to the man whose cupcake experiment was broadcast live on the web...it's not really a benchmark

  • Scott Woodwiss06/06/2009 at 13:16

The actual quote from the guy is:

"We've worked with Michelin engineers, we've worked with our partners at McLaren, that drive the F1 program, we compared notes and got our tyre physics just right."

  • Scott in Italy06/06/2009 at 13:19

i'm listening to some cool cover songs and doing working. not in the mood to listen to women's tennis today.

  • Scott Woodwiss06/06/2009 at 13:20

My impression so far is that visually, GT5 is better, but mechanically and physically, FM3 has the edge.

They say that they have all 400+ cars and all the tracks built already and it runs solidly at 60fps.

there have been 11 retirements so far this race, which is more than i expected.. but yes... i suppose bring flame throwers into f1 might make the drivers a little more motivated. It's like when was on top gear and Jeremy suggested attaching machine guns to the cars, Jenson agreed it might make the drivers more motivated :D

seems that way. Safina appears to get smashed in Grand Slam finals even though shes awesome the rest of the time. Shame really, she really needs to get one under her belt.

sometimes I wonder how different womens results would be if they did best of 5. Men often fight back from 2 sets down, women don't get a chance.

  • Scott in Italy06/06/2009 at 14:24

fair point. but as long as they're getting 75% (?) of the money available for the men, they might as well do less work.

didn't they campaign successfully for equal money at all slams? or was that just at Wimbledon?

Last tournament in Madrid for some reason Safina got more money for winning than Federer. She looked rather embarrassed about it too.

Hehe, you'd like to think so. But it's basically the fact that Dad can't afford the contract for my phone any more. Plus I now technically work on behalf of O2 and I was advised that their customer service isn't bad.

i remember one or two having equal money, but didn't think it was all slams? or maybe it was all slams, but not many of the other ones. as long as they're grunting, i'm not enjoying it.

that is why I don't get sponsorship, I can't recall ever buying a good/service or doing something with a company simply because they sponsor F1. I have a Vodafone phone, but have done since they sponsored Ferrari :D

yeah last year and this year (and the 07 final?). still second ain't bad. just ask brawn, but they get first as well ;)

I need to do work and watch sport, never a good thing because only one ever wins.

script is bugging FIA every 10 seconds to see if it's there. i can stick your email on it if you want, and you'll find out same time i do. but is 10 seconds really that important? if i really bored, i'd sort the weights and post them here for everyone too. i'd rather not though.

RB: Yeah, because here you don’t have a lot of… in fact I’ve been told that there are no races at all. This is the only event of the year. We’ve been passing on the main straight on the right, that’s the only clean line. Although I like Jenson very much, I hope my side is a lot cleaner than his.

JB: If any of you want to get your road cars out, do some starts, you’re more than welcome."

It would be good for him to get a win. Button is still awesome - faster with more fuel. Its going to be down to strategy and luck as Brawn and Red Bull will again dominate with Ferrari clutching to their shirt tails. Not sure how Trulli will fair. Rosberg likely to score points, but it is going to be difficult for Alonso to do so.

OK i've watched all the starts, the 2nd place person normally ends up about 3rd or worse, although most people in that position have swept over to the outside immediately. Although in 05 one of the Ferraris went straight on and nearly got the lead being on the inside of turn 1, maybe that's the best strategy.

    Good evening guys :)

After lou texted me the weights earlier, I can't help but wonder how on earth that renault of alonso can be so light and yet seem so slow when comparing... so I have come to a simple conclusion to Renault's problems.

Flav's ego is weighing the car down. Flav must go.

    Hey Guys,

I have managed to write a blog post on today's qualifying with predictions on stint length and fuel-adjusted qualifying times called "How Heavy Was Your Turkey?"

As always, hope you like it and please feel free to comment or add suggestions... :)

  • Nikki06/06/2009 at 17:17

Well, we've entered the stupid season here in North America, when Fox affiliate Speed TV bends over and turns coverage of the next four races over to Fox, in an attempt to drum up American interest in the sport, perhaps. Which would be nice, but Fox broadcasts them in the afternoon -- several hours after live.

At least in Canada I might be able to catch the races on time on TSN, but it's unlikely. So, in order to isolate myself from inadvertently seeing the results before I can watch the race, there will be no internets for me! Sniff! Have fun everyone with this fantastic new live commenting toy!

  • Lukeh06/06/2009 at 17:21

Wait... I'm confused. Has Rubens shaved?

It looks like there is a beard.... but also looks like there isn't a beard.

listen first. the killers version is live for starters, which takes more talent and secondly they not only captured the spirit of the song, they elevated it to another level.

it's a good version, no doubt about that, but dire straits are just... dire straits, man!

plus like I just said, something about Brandon's onstage presence really worries me. He always looks so nervous, edgey, shakey...

  • Steven Roy06/06/2009 at 21:41

Walmart are considered to be very bad. Imagine Bill Gates bad and think of something even worse. If Sam Walton was still around he would be worth about twice as much as Bill. 5 of the top ten richest people in USA are Waltons. They have some interesting management practises and they sell guns in their supermarkets. You can't buy a Glock in Asda though. Not even Timo

  • Andy Taylor06/06/2009 at 21:43

    where do you shop?

Mainly Waitrose, some Sainsbury's and Morrisons, a little ASDA, never Tesco. We also buy quite a lot of stuff online but not from those mentioned above.

That is IKEA's advertising campaign in action. You see any word in capitals that has mre than two of the same letters you read it as IKEA. No stupid logos for them.

Ours looks like an eyesore. A dark blue box. Next to it is a store called ILVA. Danish I think, much better to look at, with windows.

  • Andy Taylor06/06/2009 at 21:56

Well if you can afford Waitrose and Sainsbury's..!

We tend to find that they're actually cheaper for the things we buy in there, plus Waitrose tends to sell UK or European produce, which reduces the food miles.

Sounds to me that someone has decided that they are in Norfolk, Lotus were in Norfolk, 2+2 =99.

James Hunt's brother David bought the rights to the Team Lotus name after they left F1 with a view to bringing them back. Lotus Cars could claim the right to use the name possibly but Litespeed?

Either that or Max is prepared to underwrite the fines that the users of the names Lotus, Brabham etc will get to generate publicity. If he decides that FOTA's entry is void he can then award the entries to the fantasy teams who can then sell them to the proper teams including making a profit on the fines.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)06/06/2009 at 22:30

They would want some control. You can't hand your brand to someone else to exploit as they wish. Besides the rights to the Lotus name for motor sport does not belong to them.

Smacks of hypocrisy to me - that the FIA would support teams using names without permission whilst going after USF1 despite there being no trademark on F1

Having never watched the show, or herad of Mr Arrington, this is my [email protected]

It looks like miscommunication, Mike Arrlington was clearly pissed off at the fact he hadn't been sent a review unit and he felt it was because he was negative about it, and wanted to bring it up. He did so Badly

He effectively accused Leo of being open to persuasion in his reviews, which clearly Leo couldn't take lightly as it was an attack on his professional reputation, and he acted as if it was. You cant blame him for that.

Last week or the week before Leo said on one show that he would go and buy a Pre but at the time they were going on sale he was woking. I don't know why they have to be bought at a certain time but if the guy was prepared to buy it site unseen then it is a cheap shot from Arrington. Apparently Leo has always been a fan of Palm.

  • Steven Roy07/06/2009 at 00:12

    Martin Brundle?

I suppose he is the obvious one. Martin Donnelly is driving a Lotus 97T at Goodwood so maybe that is a test

  • Nick07/06/2009 at 00:12

Joe on the Lotus deal which now includes Johnny Herbert. I guess by next week Mario Andretti and Emerson Fittipaldi will be part of the tea,

I can't belive all these old Teams coming back are by coincidence, either max or bernie must be involved.

Didnt Bernie try to convince Brawn to call them selves Tyrrell when they were reforming?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/06/2009 at 00:13

The rate these rumours are being used as credible sources then being alive need not be a pre requisite...

Does that mean Kimi is in with a shout then? ;)

  • me07/06/2009 at 00:13

I've been a fan of Leo for a long time, back when he was on Tech TV, and i learnt a lot of cool stuff from those old shows. Now he is one of the webs most respected tech reporters, Its a shame he got all sweary, but its a bit like someone accusing a bonafide f1 journo of being GMM

only the second time i've heard the f-bomb from leo. last week i linked to a live gilmor gang recording because i suspected one of the guys would actually explode live on air due to a fit of anger (not arrington).

i guess it's that sort of show.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/06/2009 at 00:13

Ironically calling themselves Tyrell would have been entirely appropriate...

  • Steven Roy07/06/2009 at 00:15

Didnt Bernie try to convince Brawn to call them selves Tyrrell when they were reforming?

They are trying to prove that even if the current lot leave F1 will still be full of historic names.

  • Andy Taylor07/06/2009 at 00:15

Didnt Bernie try to convince Brawn to call them selves Tyrrell when they were reforming?

That would have been more relevant than what is being suggested for Lotus and Brabham. It's a bit like the re-formed Bucks Fizz which had none of the original members.

  • Nick07/06/2009 at 00:16

Ironically calling themselves Tyrell would have been entirely appropriate...

Im not big on my f1 history, i know BAR were born out of Tyrrell is that what you're hinting at?

  • Nick07/06/2009 at 00:17

They are trying to prove that even if the current lot leave F1 will still be full of historic names.

They do seem to be pushing quite hard, well harder than i would have expected a month ago...

  • Steven Roy07/06/2009 at 00:19

Im not big on my f1 history, i know BAR were born out of Tyrrell is that what you're hinting at?

I think regardless how the old names are brought back it is wrong. It is like Lewis Hamilton being called Ayrton Senna or Jenson Button being called Jim Clark. Those teams are gone. The fact that someone bought some rights for buttons at an auction does not mean there is any connection whatever. It is false advertising.

  • Steven Roy07/06/2009 at 00:19

I guess by this time next week Vanwall, Maserati and ERA will be on the list.

I'm reading Sir Jackie Stewart's Autobiography "Winning is not enough" - which is a fantastic book and I think one of the better F1 autobiographies.

Anyway, he talks about the birth of the Tyrrell F1 team and it was a tight-knit group of guys led by a master engineer who took pride of place in meticulous preparation, won their very first race and then went on to win the world championship as privateers a year later.

  • Andy Taylor07/06/2009 at 00:21

Im not big on my f1 history, i know BAR were born out of Tyrrell is that what you're hinting at?

I was - Tyrell became BAR which became Honda F1 and as we all know then became Brawn GP.

  • Nick07/06/2009 at 00:23

I agree completly, the names of the Era belong to the era, if they naturaly evolve like Mclaren, Ferari and Williams, fair enough. If the original partners want to come back, like Minardi then fair enough. But selling an image of an old team thinly plastered over a naive start up doesn't seem to be worth while to me.

I'm not sure what they expect to do, get all the old fans back and hope they don't follow the sport closely enough to realise they are fake? I cant see anyone following old school f1 teams and not knowing what is happening.

  • Andy Taylor07/06/2009 at 00:24

I think regardless how the old names are brought back it is wrong.

I agree, unless the original team owner buys back the team. I think that means the only person that can still do that is Eddie Jordan.

He whinged even more as a team owner!

  • Nick07/06/2009 at 00:29

I think his work there proves he is a bit too out of touch to go back.

  • Andy Taylor07/06/2009 at 00:30

and as an ex-team owner before getting the BBC gig. Thing is, if he returned to team ownership, we'd still see him on TV.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/06/2009 at 00:31

Just got this message from my Hungarian colleague:

    Hi Gavin,

Imagine, my Finnish boyfriend was out there in Istanbul! He got some tickets and saw the show live :) ,,,but he says it was almost empty. Tickets too expensive for locals I guess.

Ohh! Plus the Ferrari engineers are staying at his hotel with this Jenson Button guy, who sat right next to them in the restaurant... hehehh...

if this means something to you ?! Not to me, but it's good to tell someone who's interested in this stuff!

  • Scott Woodwiss07/06/2009 at 00:33

Just got this message from my Hungarian colleague:

Hehe, i expect you might be getting some demands to find out exactly which hotel is Jenson's choice in Istanbull soon...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/06/2009 at 00:35

Gavin, have you seen my comment to you in today's daily thread?

I have Scott - it's a very kind offer, thank you!

TBH I'm not sure if I will do this trip because it will be very difficult to fly/train over for just one day ... but we will see ;)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/06/2009 at 00:37

Cool cool. I just thought that seeing as I live technically next door to Lotus Cars (there's even a sign in Wymondham directing down a turning to go there!) and thanks to where I live the train is a popular mode of transport with myself, I'd try and come up with a solution. So I'm just putting it out there should you eventually decide to make the trip. :)

  • Steven Roy07/06/2009 at 00:38

I think it is more for the casual fans who can be sold that Brabham has won its first race in XX years and then talk about their long heritage of achievement blah blah blah

Ooh a direct flight to Norwich would save a lot of time and extra travelling on the train to and from London.

  • Steven Roy07/06/2009 at 00:43

    BRM?

    Cooper?

All of the original owners are long dead. There may be some family though who could do it.

Arguments are fun. If you believe something you should argue it. Doesn't matter if you are wrong. Sometimes it is fun to argue the wrong side of a point just to find out whether you are right or not.

I heart Steven Roy. Discussing (debating or arguing) your point helps you learn about the topic and learn about yourself.

You should hear the reaction, and see the facial expressions, when I drop a Felipé Baby at someone who is so upset they have turned their brain off.

    Random Mark Knopfler F1 fact:

He broke his hand (or collarbone?) in the 1986 Celebrity Race at the Australian Grand Prix driving one of the greatest Japanese Turbo cars of all time - a Mitsubishi Cordia Turbo (known as 'Legend Mobile' in my house due to Dad owning a modified version at the time)

you guys need to watch the videos to either Frontier Psychiatrist by The Avalanches, or Knights of Cydonia, and try and work out what the hell is going on in either as both leave me agasp in sheer amazement at whatever the hell the message is in both. :D

@Lukeh - Knights of Cydonia is on every Apple maintained demo machine in Australian retailers. I think of you every day when I see it.

The message is that you have to fight for your rights (to party?)

I'm sure people must have been talking about this earlier but considering I was getting told off for saying Vettel was so much a better driver than Webber earlier I feel vindicated by the fuel levels. Must have been an awesome lap from Vettel.

According to my blog post he was only a little bit better though...

Can you do a comparison for the year so far? I say MW is as good as Vettel
