Free Practice Day is upon us at last. Perhaps it is just me, but it feels like an age since we were watching those cars wind their way through the streets of Monaco. I'm looking forward to seeing them in action once again, but slightly worried that the weekend will be overshadowed by nonsense. We'll see. Meanwhile, here's what we're talking about:

  • BMW have decided not to run with their KERS device in Turkey, despite the fact that they were touting a new version that was supposed to help them out. Apparently they'd prefer to concentrate on their aero upgrades, and would rather see an improvement on that front before they put their faith in KERS again.
  • It seems as though all the optimism teams had before they got to the track has disappeared. Alonso was super confident the team could get back to their winning ways, but now the Renault driver says that Brawn and Button could see an early end to the championship.
  • The weather has been true to form so far, with the predicted thunderstorm yesterday. The rest of the weekend looks to be sunny, so we should be in for a dry race.

Don't forget to test out the new live commenting system during all the sessions this weekend. It's got moveable boxes so you can set it up however you want. I'll see you in the comments.

How's the Hamiltonometer doing so far this weekend?

  • Journeyer05/06/2009 at 00:48

    Morning everyone.

How's the Hamiltonometer doing so far this weekend?

It's been awfully quiet. At this point, I think only Vettel and Red Bull think they still have a shot. But this is Ross Brawn they're up against, so I don't think they'll really be able to catch up...

  • Nick (on the naughty step)05/06/2009 at 00:51

Even if the other teams do think they have a chance, there is no reason for them to say so. I would back red bull for this one, but if button can get himself on pole he could dictate the race

Will Buxton has a great article about Istanbul park http://willthef1journo.wordpress.com/2009/06/04/turkey-tilkes-masterpiece/

Something about Max giving fota a good whipping?

I cant see it happening, If the big teams breakaway, bernie would go with them, and with him everything that makes F1. Max would have succeded in making a genuine f2 which people would actually watch.

  • Amy05/06/2009 at 01:44

i heart doohickey. Lclt keeps tarting himself up which is appreciated, but he can not snatch me away from my first love.

So what would happen to the current Mosley-Palmer F2?

  • Nick (on the naughty step)05/06/2009 at 01:50

So what would happen to the current Mosley-Palmer F2?

Wel presumably the current f1 would become GP1 as there would be a massive wrangle over who owns the f1 name and who can do what with it, so i guess Maxf1 would stay as F1, and become a feeder to GP1. F2 remains as F2 which feeds GP2, which feeds F1.

  • Dans05/06/2009 at 01:50

I cant see it happening, If the big teams breakaway, bernie would go with them, and with him everything that makes F1. Max would have succeded in making a genuine f2 which people would actually watch.

Im pretty sure there wont be a break away. Theres not enough teams and they would have to spend huge amounts to get it going.

Plus the with uncertinty of success and no TV contracts available, the like of Brawn and Macca wont jump.

Plus Bernie will most likely off them fat deal to hang around for a bit.

  • Nick (on the naughty step)05/06/2009 at 01:52

    That's if they don't get Bernie's support.

Plus Bernie will most likely off them fat deal to hang around for a bit.

It's not as much about money anymore as it is governance. I think they only be really happy if Max is either forced out, or he gives in to their demands.

And if push comes to shove, it's not Max who has everyone contracted to him - it's Bernie.

  • Dans05/06/2009 at 01:52

    True.

have to think about that one....

...and my thought says.. I thought Bernie agrees with Max's standpoint?

    Bernie agrees with winners :P

But the pre FOTA meeting in Monaco was never really explained, he seems to be as close to the teams as he does to max. And if they jump, he knows what the better show will be.

  • Dans05/06/2009 at 02:00

    Sweet.

    Love Bernie.

  • Dans05/06/2009 at 02:03

So hes basically told all his old chums with potential new teams 'come to us, put in an entry and i will either give you capped F1 or a new GP1'

Either way your going racing in a premier category.

  • Dans05/06/2009 at 02:07

Did i read somewhere today that Force India jumped and put in a new entry with late fees?

Translators a bit rough, the most i can make out is that they are at least suspended from FOTA.

  • Journeyer05/06/2009 at 02:28

Rumors have come out, but AUTOSPORT still addresses them as 9 teams - I'd be inclined to pick AUTOSPORT over those rumors.

Just did a quick news search and there is not a mention of it anywhere. Force India changing sides doesn't affect anything. It's not like Ferrari switching sides the last time.

They are quoting Auto Motor und Sport which is a reasonably good source. I have no idea though about the site doing the quoting

They are FOTA's most disposable team, I suspect USF1 would be preferable to them

  • Steven Roy05/06/2009 at 02:38

I would have thought that had aby team put in an entry before the deadline or after it Max would have been all over the media with the news.

  • Dans05/06/2009 at 02:39

Looks like a gossipy type of Autosport

  • Journeyer05/06/2009 at 02:39

It does make it a bit more difficult for FOTA to do a breakaway. One less team to work with. But yeah, nothing impossible.

  • Steven Roy05/06/2009 at 02:40

OK. I need to be awake in 4 hours for FP1 so time to go to bed. Don't make too much noise. There are sidepodpeeps sleeping you know. Oh and tidy up efore Christine gets here or there will be more people on the naughty step.

If there was a breakaway Williams would switch back and I guess so would Force India. I would like to think USF1 would move too

  • Journeyer05/06/2009 at 02:42

But wouldn't they be locked in to the F1 entry list already? They'd be stuck - especially contractually-obligated Williams.

  • Dans05/06/2009 at 02:44

But wouldn't they be locked in to the F1 entry list already? They'd be stuck - especially contractually-obligated Williams.

As nick just pointed out to me, the contract is with Bernie, not Max.

..and bernies sitting in the middle with all that tv money. no wonder he looks so smug! lol

  • Journeyer05/06/2009 at 02:46

Good point. But unlike the other FOTA members, their entry is unconditional - so if the FIA accept their entry, they have to be able to produce an entry, right?

  • Journeyer05/06/2009 at 02:46

..and bernies sitting in the middle with all that tv money. no wonder he looks so smug! lol

Heh. To be fair, he's not making as much as he used to, since more of that money goes to CVC.

  • Nick (on the naughty step)05/06/2009 at 02:47

Unless Ferrari drag it through the courts so long, as to make it a worthless proposition i guess.

did Prodrive produce an entry 2 in 2008 ?

  • Journeyer05/06/2009 at 02:48

    Good night Nick. :)

  • Dans05/06/2009 at 02:49

did Prodrive produce an entry 2 in 2008 ?

2007 i think but Willaims didnt want customer cars in F1.

  • Journeyer05/06/2009 at 02:49

did Prodrive produce an entry 2 in 2008 ?

Ah, good point. They didn't. But I suspect Max could've chased them, but decided not do. He may decide differently this time round...

Also, Williams isn't a new team - they're an existing team, so they can't use the same reasons Prodrive did last time.

  • F1Wolf05/06/2009 at 03:20

well it may not be too different this time. Prodrive dropped the entry because the rules were not the same as they signed up for. quite similar to Ferrari situation :-)

  • Steven Roy05/06/2009 at 06:33

It is probably a sign that I have not had enough sleep that I opened the doohickey and I still have comments shown from before I went to bed.

    I didn’t read anything about a suspension. All I saw was the 2010 signup. Do you have a link? {Comment #42}

Since Force India, like Ferrari and Williams, signed a contract wth Bernie in 2005 taking them to 2012, this doesn't surprise me (if it turns out to be true - some important sources are oddly quiet about the whole thing).

This is a huge problem for the FOTA Nine/Eight. If Force India has an unconditional entry and I'm right about there being 12 new teams in the wings, FOTA now has to either cave in to Max's demands before June 11 or they will definitely not be in F1. Either way, Max has no reason to listen to them.

  • Alianora La Canta05/06/2009 at 09:48

    Good point. But unlike the other FOTA members, their entry is unconditional - so if the FIA accept their entry, they have to be able to produce an entry, right? {Comment #59}

Either they have to produce an entry or they have to sell it to someone who will. However, the teams could, at least in theory, have a team in both series.

Exactly. max tried to make it sound like Stepney was giving Coughlan info to feed into McLaren when what really happened is that the two of them were sharing data and they made a joint approach to Honda. Nick Fry admitted meeting them. The last thing Coughlan was going to do was feed a lot of that data into McLaren and the last thing Stepney was going to do with the McLaren data was feed it into Ferrari.

GMM sounds good but it is actually a guy in Australia who picks up stories and recycles them without checking how good the source is or whether there is any truth to it. He came here a few months ago to complain about us slagging him off and after he explained how he worked he got a much worse reaction. He left saying he would pop back but for some reason he never has.

"This is a serious blow to the district, its high-tech economy and its relationship with F1. We have a cluster of businesses in Northamptonshire which are at the leading edge. It affects not only those who are involved in the business but their families. This is really very bad news and one must commiserate with family and individuals affected."

    Hi all

I turn on practice results and i should've know Rosberg would be quickest again!!

GRRR that boy winds me up!!

Just been reading a funny debate about Button being comparable to Prost (it is PF1 so take with a pinch of salt), personally I don't think he is comparable apart from similar driving style. Prost clearly beat excellent team mates (Senna, Lauda, Mansell) where as Jenson's been beaten by Trulli, Fisi etc!!

I think we all expect a Brawn to win again this weekend (yawn yawn), am I the only person who really isn' t that fussed by Button?

  • RCC (aka rockingcopsecorner)05/06/2009 at 11:22

I believe it will just about run on that (though the RAM means it'll be a slow experience), but you need to check the graphics card. The Sims 2 (excluding the Stories games) didn't officially support laptop graphics cards, but some of the higher-end ones worked anyway. Sims 3 may be stricter... ..or more lenient, depending on how EA have chosen to handle the problem.

  • lou05/06/2009 at 13:13

Fisi and Nakajima attempted to occupy the same bit of track at the same time with the usual results.

The soft tyre isn't much of an improvement speed-wise over the hard tyre, plus it grains faster.

Just watched the FP1 Highlights on the BBC website.

I tried that once, but it said that I cannot get the BBC in my location. I hope their not still pissed about the Declaration of Independance.

Water under the bridge. I realized today that if Bernie were not such a money grubbing jerk, I would be in Montreal watching the cars finish up FP1. Then off to the Casino or Beergarden. I miss Montreal

he is failing miserably against someone he should easily beat

  • Steven Roy05/06/2009 at 15:53

FIF1 have deserted FOTA and entered owing to commercial pressures. Poor little billionair couldn't hold out for 3 weeks?

FIF1 have deserted FOTA and entered owing to commercial pressures. Poor little billionair couldn't hold out for 3 weeks?

Where's Journeyer? His argument was that Williams breaking away made FOTA stronger. I can't see how that works - especially now.

Vijay and Frank must have assumed the FOTA 8 won't get entry into 2010... Although the positive sign is that FIF1 are obviously serious about staying in the sport...

  • Amy05/06/2009 at 15:57

    yep

NBC is probably waiting to show Federer at a better time, primetime or close to it. It's noon here

  • Flibster05/06/2009 at 16:07

They are the ones I have custom moulded sleeves for - the ones I had at the Science Museum.

    Thankfully not my full customs.

True. There are some not happy Americans on the place where I'm live commenting the game. NBC sound a bit like the free-to-air network here in that they have the rights then don't use them for live games.

Naughty Step is supposed to be a temporary punishment. Christmas list banishment could be for a lifetime

  • Alex Andronov05/06/2009 at 17:07

    Woohoo! Well done.

I know it's a serious achievement. I was in the office at 6:30 this morning. So fewer than 12 hours that's the main thing.

I've also had parade lap inspiration :)

  • Flibster05/06/2009 at 17:08

On the other hand, Heikki looks fast this weekend

He expects it to be a struggle to be in the top 10 though :(

Didn't hear about this earlier, what's this nonsense about a myf1dream team entry for next year. An F1 team controlled and funded by fans? Someone's even more delusional than Flav

  • Bassano Clapper05/06/2009 at 17:35

Is there a cost in submitting an F1 entry as some of this seems like headline grabbing to me?

yes there is I asked that question the other day on PF .. I think its 300, 000 euro will double check

I smell a small glimmer of hope

  • Nick (naughty step)05/06/2009 at 17:38

  • Bassano Clapper05/06/2009 at 17:38

yes there is I asked that question the other day on PF .. I think its 300, 000 euro will double check

    Yup, apparently:

13.1 Applications to compete in the Championship may be submitted to the FIA during the period 22-29 May 2009 inclusive on an entry form as set out in Appendix 2 hereto accompanied by an undertaking to pay the entry fee of €309,000 (three hundred and nine thousand Euros) to the FIA no later than 1 November 2009.

Didn't hear about this earlier, what's this nonsense about a myf1dream team entry for next year. An F1 team controlled and funded by fans? Someone's even more delusional than Flav

Someone tried to do a similar thing with a football club a few years back. It didn't work.

  • toxicfusion05/06/2009 at 17:39

Playing F1 Championship Edition, qualified on poll at Monaco with the AI difficulty setting set to hard and what happens? it rains and I get taken out at the first corner. The game doesn't like me.

  • Nick (naughty step)05/06/2009 at 17:39

Someone tried to do a similar thing with a football club a few years back. It didn't work.

    I think it did

  • Bassano Clapper05/06/2009 at 17:40

Ah, having re-read the rule quoted, it does say "accompanied by an undertaking to pay the entry fee... no later than 1 November 2009"

Surely, that's for successful applicants whose entry has been approved?

  • Amy05/06/2009 at 17:40

    BREAK HIM AGAIN

  • toxicfusion05/06/2009 at 17:41

    Yep :)

  • Bassano Clapper05/06/2009 at 17:42

Surely, that's for successful applicants whose entry has been approved?

    Yep :)

So, submitting an appplication comes with no payment to the FIA

  • Jackie05/06/2009 at 17:43

argh, sorry for the enormous link

  • Nick (naughty step)05/06/2009 at 17:43

Surely, that's for successful applicants whose entry has been approved?

Presumably to be accepted you have to show you have the means to pay the fee. i.e. have it in cash at the time of application

  • toxicfusion05/06/2009 at 17:43

So, submitting an appplication comes with no payment to the FIA

Doesn't seem to, unless there is something I'm missing.

I hope winning-Fed is back for good

  • Jackie05/06/2009 at 17:44

You dont think my mustang/range rover idea would work?

  • Bassano Clapper05/06/2009 at 17:45

Or the promise of an engine deal IF a successful entry is granted, I'd imagine

Driver's to be nominated on 2010 entry form, that's a bit early too

  • chris evans05/06/2009 at 17:47

    I'm all for it.

Saying that though, it would be worth having a look in skips around Brackley. There's bound to be a Honda engine knocking about in one of them.

Ah that's tricky. You could be cheeky'ish and say something like ..

Most people see a large blank space on a page and wonder how on earth they can fill it. For me, that's something I love, a chance to put forward my thoughts and ideas and hopefully pass on my enthusiasm.

Theres is a Freeview ad on here about 'great TV moments' and it has Roger crying at the Australian Open on it. It breaks my heart everytime its on, and its on every. single. adbreak.

What on earth is green ginger wine? Is it actually green?

When I was a child, at new year when all the adults would have a drink, the kids got ginger wine .. it's a bit like ginger cordial. However, I saw this in Aldi (called Crabbie's Mac) a while ago and bought some. 17% proof mixture of whisky and ginger, it's actually very nice over a ton of ice

  • Pat W05/06/2009 at 19:31

Does Joe watch the BBC broadcast if he's at the track?

I was about to say the same thing, and the F1 paddock too - but then how many are recording it at home on DVR to watch when they get back?

Although Joe himself is in France, so..

  • Nick (naughty step)05/06/2009 at 19:32

    Ive added one.

Ive noticed many of the teams have Sky in the motorhomes, so i expect they see the bbc coverage.

  • Bassano Clapper05/06/2009 at 19:32

Ive noticed many of the teams have Sky in the motorhomes, so i expect they see the bbc coverage.

    Only in Europe, I'd imagine

  • Jackie05/06/2009 at 19:33

What was the last F1 related book he bought and why did he choose it?

  • me05/06/2009 at 19:34

Does Joe watch the BBC broadcast if he's at the track?

i would guess he watches the FOM feed on the monitors in the media room, but it's always worth asking.

  • Amy05/06/2009 at 19:34

Ive noticed many of the teams have Sky in the motorhomes, so i expect they see the bbc coverage.

If he is in the press room though, they dont have commentary in there

  • Nick (naughty step)05/06/2009 at 19:35

    Only in Europe, I'd imagine

They only have the motorhomes in europe!

  • Bassano Clapper05/06/2009 at 19:35

They only have the motorhomes in europe!

    :D

    Fair enough

  • Nick (naughty step)05/06/2009 at 19:36

If he is in the press room though, they dont have commentary in there

I expect the press room would have a loop of all the major broadcasters output, for listening to interviews e.t.c..

Evening all, just got in from work. I saw that Nico and Heikki topped the practice sessions today. Apart from that, how goes it? :)

Naughty step & naughty corner for them, respectively?

they are working fine for me atm..

  • Scott Woodwiss05/06/2009 at 19:39

Just because I really want Federer to win the Grand Slam... It was difficult to chose who to support for me :-(

  • chris evans05/06/2009 at 19:43

Cricket is shaping up for a close finish....

  • Amy05/06/2009 at 19:45

If Soderling does to Roger what he did to Rafa, I might not surface from my bed for a year

    Oooh, do tell.

Yeah, against the Dutch as well. Not good is it?

  • Nick (naughty step)05/06/2009 at 19:47

Cricket is shaping up for a close finish....

Too close, i dont like it at all

Not ideal by a long stretch

The whole tennis world will. And Roger will end up destroyed... But lets be positive: the Big Roger for the Grand Slam! :D He really deserves it

  • Amy05/06/2009 at 19:50

I'm expecting to cry. I get teary just thinking about him getting it.

  • Amy05/06/2009 at 19:53

ooh Heikki was fastest on track, AND in the pitlane. 400 Euro fine :D

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 19:54

Right, off to see Terminator Salvation. Hope it's good and see you later!

    I'm back...

It was really good. Three out of Five Pints of Awesome. I think I ahve a ManCrush on Christian Bale, too.

Great story, action's wicked, SFX fantastic, and there's loads of Easter Eggs from the other films, that's all I'll say! :D

  • guille230605/06/2009 at 19:54

I'm expecting to cry. I get teary just thinking about him getting it.

Then buy a box of tissues, because he will make us all cry of joy... except for Soderling fans, but somebody has to lose so the best can fulfil his destiny (I should write epic stories :P )

  • chris evans05/06/2009 at 19:54

I think I ahve a ManCrush on Christian Bale, too.

    Who doesn't?

Great story, action's wicked, SFX fantastic, and there's loads of Easter Eggs from the other films, that's all I'll say! :D

So why does it only get 3 pints?

  • RG05/06/2009 at 19:55

    Who doesn't?

    Moi.

  • Bassano Clapper05/06/2009 at 19:55

  • Bassano Clapper05/06/2009 at 19:56

Only have eyes for Timo or Icelandic Eurovision performers?

  • Amy05/06/2009 at 19:56

    Aye, that be true.

  • Pat W05/06/2009 at 19:57

Yeah me too - I wasn't that fussed before, and now I want to see it!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 19:58

So why does it only get 3 pints?

Because I have to compare it to the first two films which are Five Pints.

  • Steven Roy05/06/2009 at 19:58

    Oooh, do tell.

Check dropio and see Lou's cog and other stuff

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 19:59

Yeah me too - I wasn't that fussed before, and now I want to see it!

You are the only person I know who has seen it and didn't think it was absolute rubbish!

It's nothing like the first two films - but then again nothing can be.

It's entertaining and decent enough and the story is not too stupid, considering the effed up timeline...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 20:01

You are the only person I know who has seen it and didn't think it was absolute rubbish!

I've just seen some reviews. Thing is, I never seem to agree with them anyway!

I didn't even know the netherlands played cricket.

    Apparantly they play it well.

  • Nick (naughty step)05/06/2009 at 20:04

    Freaking shambles

At least it was close, if we beat Pakistan we should go through on Run Rate

  • chris evans05/06/2009 at 20:04

    Apparantly they play it well.

Well enough to beat England, but that isn't saying much any more

  • Amy05/06/2009 at 20:06

Well enough to beat England, but that isn't saying much any more

I remember a great time not so long ago when England won the Ashes. Ahh memories.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 20:06

    Apparently they invented it...

It must be a regular thought then.

The happy place of actually being able to watch it on telly!

  • Nick (naughty step)05/06/2009 at 20:12

Its worse... i have tickets to a semi and the final...

I didn't expect England to get there, but there was hope to cling too...

  • RG05/06/2009 at 20:13

I didn't expect England to get there, but there was hope to cling too...

You'll still get to watch a great match at least! Pretty sure they'll all be good.

  • Nick (naughty step)05/06/2009 at 20:14

You'll still get to watch a great match at least! Pretty sure they'll all be good.

  • Nick (naughty step)05/06/2009 at 20:14

Perhaps Joe could be asked about why England are so rubbish at cricket?

  • RG05/06/2009 at 20:18

Perhaps Joe could be asked about why England are so rubbish at cricket?

Its the usual philosphy, once England get to an internation tournament, they start to panic and run around in circles. It happens in football, cricket, tennis, rugby league, etc.

Rugby Union is the exception to the rule. Where we do rubbish and then do well in the international tournament.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 20:21

It's because the press talk up the national teams as if they're going to win to sell papers, stringing us all along in the first place.

  • Amy05/06/2009 at 20:23

It's because the press talk up the national teams as if they're going to win to sell papers, stringing us all along in the first place.

I read this morning someone accusing Federer of being arrogant for first saying Andy Murray shouldn't be the favourite in Melbourne earlier this year, and then for saying he was not his main opposition in France. Considering both of these were true, I don't see the problem. It was a comment on one of those "Andy Murray Is A God" articles.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 20:24

You know, I'm starting to worry after reading all the bad reviews about the fact that I thought Terminator was good. Man, the reviewers really ripped it to shreds!

  • Nick (naughty step)05/06/2009 at 20:26

You know, I'm starting to worry after reading all the bad reviews about the fact that I thought Terminator was good. Man, the reviewers really ripped it to shreds!

Did you watch star trek, the only people i know who liked it saw it before they saw star trek?

  • Pat W05/06/2009 at 20:26

You know, I'm starting to worry after reading all the bad reviews about the fact that I thought Terminator was good. Man, the reviewers really ripped it to shreds!

It is exactly the same as with England teams.

The first Terminator movies were great. Thus the new one had better be just as great, and if it is only 3/5 we'll act as if it the worst performance ever.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 20:26

Did you watch star trek, the only people i know who liked it saw it before they saw star trek?

I did, and I enjoyed that one as well.

I liked Transformers too and that got rated badly...

You know, I'm starting to worry after reading all the bad reviews about the fact that I thought Terminator was good. Man, the reviewers really ripped it to shreds!

Bale's performance was utter garbage though.

    Just going through the motions.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 20:27

    The first one, BTW...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 20:28

Strange, I liked him in the role. Did you like the film?

  • Flibster05/06/2009 at 20:29

Strange, I liked him in the role. Did you like the film?

Meh. Take it or leave it. A bit better than T3 *would have had to be pretty special to be worse* but not as good as T or T2

  • Flibster05/06/2009 at 20:29

I liked Transformers too and that got rated badly...

    No comment... ;)

Agree with that for sure. I think this film is like Bruno Senna - quite good, but not as good as the previous Senna!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 20:31

I liked Transformers too and that got rated badly...

    No comment... ;)

Go on ... why didn't you like that one?

  • Amy05/06/2009 at 20:32

I cannot judge others taste in movies. I own a copy of From Justin To Kelly on DVD.

  • lou05/06/2009 at 20:36

there is a nice video Q&A with timo glock on f1-live that RG may like.

  • Journeyer05/06/2009 at 20:36

Hey gavin, saw your earlier comment re Williams. My viewpoint wasn't that them breaking away makes FOTA stronger - it's FOTA suspending Williams after they signed makes them stronger. But it hasn't discouraged FIF1. Would tend to agree with how Steven Roy saw it...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 20:37

Hey gavin, saw your earlier comment re Williams. My viewpoint wasn't that them breaking away makes FOTA stronger - it's FOTA suspending Williams after they signed makes them stronger. But it hasn't discouraged FIF1. Would tend to agree with how Steven Roy saw it...

    Hey J.

What did Steven Roy say again?

  • chris evans05/06/2009 at 20:37

I liked Transformers too and that got rated badly...

That is an awesome film, I've never grinned so much in my life. I felt like I was 10 again.

  • Flibster05/06/2009 at 20:37

Go on ... why didn't you like that one?

    Story thinner than a supermodel.

Plot holes you could get a supertanker through

    Main character was a gimp

Girl was NOT 16 or 17! She looked like a 30yr old world weary prostitute and was only there for one reason

    Michael Bay....

Transformers themselves were incorrect - I'd take the battered classic over the butchered new one

CGI is the only real acceptable thing in it.

  • RG05/06/2009 at 20:37

there is a nice video Q&A with timo glock on f1-live that RG may like.

    Ooooh, thanking you

    That could be interesting

    Ooooh, thanking you

He likes the same music as me. Now if you ask me here...

  • Steven Roy05/06/2009 at 20:40

What did Steven Roy say again?

Can't remember but I was right.

  • Journeyer05/06/2009 at 20:40

What did Steven Roy say again?

Something along the lines of 'Vijay couldn't stand the heat'. I guess the next team we keep an eye on is Brawn - as probable world champs this year, both camps would want them on their side.

  • guille230605/06/2009 at 20:42

CGI is the only real acceptable thing in it.

And yet the scenes are too fast and short to actually enjoy it...

  • Jackie05/06/2009 at 20:43

    tiddles is tiddly now ;)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 20:43

That is an awesome film, I've never grinned so much in my life. I felt like I was 10 again.

I liked it too. I quite like it when something is remade and it's different to the original ... That's why Star Trek works too.

    Story thinner than a supermodel.

Plot holes you could get a supertanker through

Hmm I seem to remember the cartoon being quite thin on the story part - it's not Shakespeare, it's an action movie!

Girl was NOT 16 or 17! She looked like a 30yr old world weary prostitute and was only there for one reason

    And? Mmmm... Megan Fox...

Transformers themselves were incorrect - I'd take the battered classic over the butchered new one

Aha. Do you like your remakes to be carbon copies of the originals?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 20:45

What did Steven Roy say again?

Something along the lines of 'Vijay couldn't stand the heat'. I guess the next team we keep an eye on is Brawn - as probable world champs this year, both camps would want them on their side.

Well Journeyer, following your original point, do you think FOTA is still strong now that FIF1 have left?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 20:45

What did Steven Roy say again?

Can't remember but I was right.

    Stevipedia strikes again!

  • Journeyer05/06/2009 at 20:45

    And? Mmmm... Megan Fox...

    Mmmm indeed. :D

  • Pat W05/06/2009 at 20:47

Well Journeyer, following your original point, do you think FOTA is still strong now that FIF1 have left?

I think it is becoming clear FOTA was always about the manufacturer teams.

  • Journeyer05/06/2009 at 20:49

Well Journeyer, following your original point, do you think FOTA is still strong now that FIF1 have left?

I think they're still very strong. I may change my mind if Brawn or Red Bull enter unconditionally, but as long as Ferrari stay put and the remaining teams trust them, they're still in good shape. Steven Roy also said something along those lines.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 20:49

I think it is becoming clear FOTA was always about the manufacturer teams.

I think Max is banking on the independents leaving and joining his championship so he can have 13 teams next year.

It's a strong statement from FIF1 and I think if you're a fan of the team you should be really happy that Vijay wants to be in F1 no matter what...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 21:01

Quiet tonight ... funny considering all that's going on.

Anybody here worried about the Brawns?

  • lou05/06/2009 at 21:02

Anybody here worried about the Brawns?

    no.

  • Pat W05/06/2009 at 21:03

Quiet tonight ... funny considering all that's going on.

Is there a lot going on?

I'm catching up with tweets. Had a weird 48hrs so hanging things back a bit.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 21:04

Anybody here worried about the Brawns?

    no.

Remind me... have they finished like this in FP1+2 before?

  • Amy05/06/2009 at 21:05

ooh when did it become 7am. Time for sleep.

  • Flibster05/06/2009 at 21:06

Hmm I seem to remember the cartoon being quite thin on the story part - it's not Shakespeare, it's an action movie!

This was just bad writing though.

    And? Mmmm... Megan Fox...

She was there for her bresticles. Could have done without her in the film - would anyone really have noticed the lack of cleavage?

Aha. Do you like your remakes to be carbon copies of the originals?

I'd prefer no remakes at all.

Like the Birds and psycho - they didn't need remakes..

  • Flibster05/06/2009 at 21:06

Right - time to go to Norwich... happy happy joy joy

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 21:07

ooh when did it become 7am. Time for sleep.

    7am?

Amy, you'll exhaust yourself! That's what happened to me and I just fainted randomly - and for the last 6 months I have had to go to hospital repeated times to have loads of epilepsy tests...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 21:08

Right - time to go to Norwich... happy happy joy joy

If I didn't know you were doing something with Lotus that would seem like an odd statement ;)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 21:08

Agreed. but some remakes have been very good - some better than the originals...

  • Flibster05/06/2009 at 21:08

If I didn't know you were doing something with Lotus that would seem like an odd statement ;)

I get to play with a little tart this weekend called Evora.

Apparently she's a right little goer..;)

  • Amy05/06/2009 at 21:08

I knew they remade Psycho but somehow missed that they remade the Birds. I am glad about this, I love that movie.

nope, but Heikki topped FP2, that hasn't happened before either, and it's not like he is going to win the race. (sorry amy)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 21:11

I knew they remade Psycho but somehow missed that they remade the Birds. I am glad about this, I love that movie.

Apparently the Psycho remake is an EXACT copy of the original. And I hate you for making me type Pys... Psc... OH THAT EFFING P-WORD!!!

  • RG05/06/2009 at 21:12

nope, but Heikki topped FP2, that hasn't happened before either, and it's not like he is going to win the race. (sorry amy)

So you mean, BMW in P3 won't reflect what will happen in qualifying and the race?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 21:12

Remind me... have they finished like this in FP1+2 before?

nope, but Heikki topped FP2, that hasn't happened before either, and it's not like he is going to win the race. (sorry amy)

Didn't Button do 'poorly' in Monaco until he set his pole lap? I have an idea that Brawn will dial the cars in allright when qualy comes along...

  • Steven Roy05/06/2009 at 21:12

ooh when did it become 7am. Time for sleep.

7 am - Time to get up surely?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 21:12

I've got no hope. I'll be happy with points and Q3.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 21:15

    :D

Can I just thank whoever quoted Rosberg about the 60 Grands Prix?

I have a plan now to compare his total points for the 60 GP's with other drivers on my blog to see how good he is...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 21:15

Didn't Button do 'poorly' in Monaco until he set his pole lap? I have an idea that Brawn will dial the cars in allright when qualy comes along...

The Brawns always 'under perform' in free practice. It's cause they fuel their cars as they would for the race or maybe a bit heavier and work on the set up from there. As they have always found it easier and more responsive when heavy. They seem to have been having some problems today with tyre wear, and it's possible they were working on that as well as set up. The mechanics, Ross and the drivers didn't appear stressed or anything and i think that's cause they know that they will do the usual tonight and get the set up sorted and continue working on the car. The Brawn car is incredibly responsive. They'll get it sorted, they always do. nothing to worry about (well not till q1 anyways ;) )

  • Flibster05/06/2009 at 21:20

I knew they remade Psycho but somehow missed that they remade the Birds. I am glad about this, I love that movie.

That's it, I'm on "Banana watch" this weekend!

  • Nick (naughty step)05/06/2009 at 21:27

lol i have never seen him eat a banana and they seem to have done well so far... :P

I think he had one during the Bahrain GP, it seemed to be a tense moment, and there he was strolling across the pitlane, sitting down eating a banana without a care in the world...

  • Lukeh05/06/2009 at 21:28

Sudden urge to eat a banana whilst dressed as Bananaman listening to bananarama...

  • Nick (naughty step)05/06/2009 at 21:28

he did? i didn;t notice. i was probably too busy sitting there staring at Jenson's name high up the time sheets still thinking 'omg omg omg how is this real' like i do in most races :D

  • Lukeh05/06/2009 at 21:30

he did? i didn;t notice. i was probably too busy sitting there staring at Jenson's name high up the time sheets still thinking 'omg omg omg how is this real' like i do in most races :D

  • lou05/06/2009 at 21:32

i may wear the cap... caps don't really suit me, and this one isn't really any different. however if it's a sunny day at goodwood on the sunday i may wear it just in case i see jenson and he recognises it or something odd like that... i can dream....

Not fair. I've only had that feeling once in my many a year span of supporting BMW/Sauber

  • lou05/06/2009 at 21:37

Not fair. I've only had that feeling once in my many a year span of supporting BMW/Sauber

to be fair it's only happened what... 6 or 7 times? in the year's i've been supporting them ;) their time will come :D

  • Pat W05/06/2009 at 21:37

Definitely do that. Also you can pretend he signed it on the day and people will ask where they can go to do that.

  • RG05/06/2009 at 21:39

to be fair it's only happened what... 6 or 7 times? in the year's i've been supporting them ;) their time will come :D

I've worked out, that in my 9 years of supporting BMW/Sauber, they have been top in qualifying and race just two times. That means I'm averaging 0.22 recurring each year to see them do exceptionally well.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 21:40

Definitely do that. Also you can pretend he signed it on the day and people will ask where they can go to do that.

Just pray it doesn't rain though...

    ;)

  • lou05/06/2009 at 21:42

Just pray it doesn't rain though...

that's why i say if it's sunny :P if there is a tiny spec of a cloud in the sky it will stay in the rain :P

If it were me, Glass box with letter and cog inside as well.

it will probably live in a glass box yes... but i have this strange dream that if Jenson sees it he may be more inclined to stop and let me take a photo... it wont happen... but ya know :)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/06/2009 at 21:42

in fairness the team you supported quit f1 and put you through endless months of misery. bmw have yet to do that...

in fairness the team you supported quit f1 and put you through endless months of misery. bmw have yet to do that...

I thought it was the end of the world when they took over Sauber.

Then someone told me Peter still had a 20% share and Sauber was still in the name.

So yeah, I have had misery for a whole day. ;)

  • me05/06/2009 at 21:44

It won't let me quote Lou's heart (wow that sounds weird) but I heart the 'all for F1, F1 for all' tag too.

In fact, I also heart cutting it to simply: "F1 for all"

just type & hearts ; without the spaces ;) i think "spc - all for f1, f1 for all." sums up spc perfectly :D

Erm, I know of Sigur Ros, but I don't know any of his stuff.

Sigur Ros is an iclandic band, and they are incredible. lead singer Jonsi is a incredible musician, he even has a solo album coming out later this year i believe, and a new sigur ros album next year, plus an album he recorded with his boy friend is meant to be out next month. :D

Hey - I'm supposed to be making up the numbers, remember? ;)

ooh, i read you had a blog, but was busy the day you announced. can i get a plug?

Yes you can. It's called Making Up the Numbers.

I haven't got much on there because it takes time to collate and analyse the stats into something meaningful - but I have got some stuff on there.

    Of Note:

    - A post on the "Brawn Conspiracy"

    - A post on "Driver Consistency"

    I am currently writing:

    - one for Monaco on qualifying (as it's more important than the race)

    - will start including FR stats

    - plan to do one analysing the apex speeds of Turn 8 in Turkey (if available)

    - one on the first 60 GP's of various drivers (inspired by Rosberg).

I would love some feedback and ideas for analysis - Maverick already gave me a great one for the driver consistency. Hope you all like it, especially Mr. C. for pushing me into re-starting it ;)

  • Pat W05/06/2009 at 22:13

    Yndi Halda's last.fm page

Go here to listen although they are out of sequence because it is listed per popularity.

The album (EP?) has only four tracks but it lasts over an hour.

Can I ask a silly question - on Last.fm, why does it only let me listen to 30 seconds of an artist?

Depends on the artist and your location. In some places they make enough ad revenue to pay artists per listen, in those places you can hear the whole thing. Elsewhere they don't so you can't. At least, this is my understanding of it and I could be wrong.

I think it fills a gap in the blogging 'market' for this kind of analysis. You see it sometimes in magazines - sometimes - it is interesting to see it.

This is what I do for a day job too and I thought it would be useful to use it as a different viewpoint on the F1 - no sense repeating what has already been done far better than I could ;)

I plan to do something different for each race which means some posts will take a while to write, but I'd rather go for quality over rushing it to get it out the door...
