I slept through my planned daily writing last month so now I have 8 weeks of Heikki news to catch up on. Sorry all! A big thank you to Christine for jumping in with some excellent Heikki tweets in my absence too!
We’ve had five races since my last post, and sadly three of them ended in retirement. Did you know Heikki hasn’t finished two races in a row for the last seven races? In 2010 the eleventh race of the season was his last retirement for the year so with eleven races behind us this year hopefully history will repeat itself.
I was hoping to skip through time through the medium of photo but I didn’t find enough to cover all the eight weeks so instead I’ll show you the greatest photos I’ve seen in a while as clearly the only thing better than one Finnish F1 driver is two Finnish F1 drivers. Plus bonus Catherine! Heikki also shared with us a photo of a driver’s eye view of the FIA press conference. The journalists look rather bored if you ask me.
Last month Heikki gave his fans a bit of one-on-one time via Facebook chat. I’d hate to see how many chat windows he would have had open at the same time. I thought it was very cool of him to do that for his fans and hopefully those who got to chat with him enjoyed the experience. He has also been talking to people via telephone as earlier this week he took some calls at the Fonecta call centre in Finland.
Fun day in Finland spend a day with Fonecta guys, went to the call center where people can call for all kind of info, I picked up many calls
He said that people didn’t believe they were actually talking to him and I don’t blame them, if I was calling my telephone company I certainly wouldn’t expect an F1 driver to answer. On top of all of this interaction he has been answering many fan questions and giving fantastic responses on Twitter as usual. This has been my favourite one, it appears Heikki has an excellent sense of humour.
“@emmanuel_99: @h_kovalainen you disappointed me today... Sorry, no more a fan of you...” Ok cool just click the unfollow button mate!
I also learned through Twitter that Heikki won’t be doing the Race of Champions this year. That’s a shame but after last year’s crash perhaps it’s a good idea.
As well as racing Heikki has been playing a lot of golf as usual and when he’s not playing it he’s watching it on Youtube. Now that’s dedication!
We’re into our first weekend of the summer break now and it seems Heikki is spending his in Finland.
Pretty much all packed up and ready to go tomorrow to have my summer holiday in North Finland. Looking forward to seeing @H_Kovalainen... :)
Hopefully he has a great break because there really is nothing quite like going back to your home country when you don’t live there anymore. What are your plans for this weekend, Sidepodreaders? Feel free to tell us in the comments! Whatever you’re up to, I hope you all have a good one.
it's heikki news monthly baby!
Phew. I was worried about the lack of Heikki news recently
coding. am making the most of the summer break.

did we know tamara was on twitter?

I saw it mentioned a couple of weeks ago. I haven't followed her though
at least someone in the family is tech savvy.
Hopefully she will explain it to her father

we do now.
same here
bernie must know how to operate sky+ (booooo)
He has his own bus at the races which has screens for 6 different TV feeds in it. He doesn't need Sky+
she follows mark webber and shops in homebase.
we have a connection.
does she like her dad? (the connection falls down if the answer is in the positive)
(more boos)
doesn't go to every race though.
True. I doubt he even watches the races. He would only watch if someone was paying him
no idea what i1 super series is, but the post mentioned mika so it seemed appropriate to post it in this daily:
http://www.asianage.com/racing/f1-stars-set-compete-i1-super-series-851
and i won't be watching every race live next year neither.
first time for 16 years.
someone is. all of us :)
ouch. no online streams for you?
They are using Radical sportscars. Radical make cars from very low performance to fairly high performance
http://www.radicalsportscars.com/uk/?loadnews=intl
"Radical Sportscars is pleased to announce a new association with single-seater ace Alex Brundle"
small world :)
It was only announced yesterday I think
Alex shared one with his dad in a race a while ago
i could try, but I am useless at that kind of thing.
I can remember exactly what happened at the beginning of the '93 Brazillian GP, without seeing it live, and just hearing radio commentary, and that was with Legard commentary. Michael Andretti crashed badly, and I saw the highlights later in the day, and nothing much was added to that. A similar experience a year later, when Senna spun out. I only had radio commentary to guide me, but watching the Senna film, I remember the story of the race through words, not pictures. They were filled in later.
I know it's been really exciting this year. Edge of the seat stuff for most of the races, but personally I have to draw a line, and this is it.
That's not to say there could be a point where I'm on the phone to virgin media asking for sky.
Crofty and Ant will paint the pictures for me for now, and I reckon they will be just fine.
interesting. i think i'm all in, or all out. need a lot more info on packages before making any choices though. i reckon sky will do a much better job than the beeb, but it's an 18 month contractual risk to take.
They have followed ITV's path so far, as in they recruited Tony Jardine, but I can imagine they will do a good enough job also. I just think they will put it on something like Sky Sports 4, which costs more to subscribe to in the end.
I think you need to just rely on 5 live commentary for one race, to see if you can do without Sky.
It's difficult to pick one race though, as most have been awesome.
The timing app helps enormously also.
we can't do sidepodcast without pictures. no way. at least not the podcast. what would we say?
I think streams are essential if you don't get SKy
It's interesting that Fox Sports Latinoamérica, part of the same Murdoch empire, shows F1 on the basic cable package, you only need to pay extra for the HD version of it. So, in the UK you are lacking the SD option "free" with your basic Sky subscription.
Fox Sorts LA covers all the countries from Mexico down to Argentina (except Brazil), maybe the bigger scale allows them to charge less here (besides the fact that their coverage is really poor and cheap).
I'm hoping that they might do a Pay Per Race deal for F1 fans, at £1 or £2 a race. In the same way I hoped my PS3 would work when I stuck the mainboard in the oven at 200 degrees for 10 minutes. (The eternal optimist.)
I would rather pay more to you guys to watch the race on Sky and me watch FBFB and the dashboard on top of 5live and the Timing app.
i know that watching bbc online last year was a dreadful experience. i can't imagine watching illegal streams will offer anything better. to my mind, either we go all in on sky, or we don't watch any races and concentrate on things surrounding the sport. technically we don't need to watch any f1 to do christine's rankings, tweets of the week etc.
i can't see the fun in doing something half-arsed. but it's still too early to call.
yeah that would be good, but you still need the equipment i guess. there's the option of a 3rd party dish and something like RTL coverage. equipment is costly up front, but i don't think there's any subscription.
that's an interesting prospect, but the risk to my mind is - what if the season is dreadful again? if someone bans DRS during the off-season, after we'd just shelled out for a full sky+ package, i might jump off a bridge.
i wish there was some kind of commitment not to fiddle with any rules for 3 years or something. i'd commit to paying for sky if every race was as good as hungary, but can i get my money back if they're not?
Seems a little extreme
Nothing in F1 is stable for 3 years. THe Concorde Agreement is about to run out so anything can happen
I am reasonably lucky, as in I have Virgin Media, so the outlay to get the Sports channels would not be that great, but there's two of us in this house, and I am finding it difficult to justify spending £140 a year for the races BBC won't show live.
I would rather spend that money on taking my Wife out for meals and holidays.
Theres a few months before any money needs to be spent, so you have enough time to make a decision either way.
but the minimum commitment for sky is 18 months. it's a risky purchase.
thinking about it, f1 moving to sky is the final admission that formula 1 is entertainment, isn't it? if i pay my money, i want value for money back.
agreed. many months.
It's the final admission that there is no long term strategy and just a short term profit grab
heh.
you can sort of see why though. we were depressed enough with the 2010 season to stop watching. imagine if we'd paid a pocket load of money not to watch.
A good example of the lack of long term strategy is the engine formula over the championship years
4.5 litre
2.5 litre
1.5 litre
3.0 litre
1.5 litre turbo
3.5 litre
2.4 litre (ie what we had more or less in 1952)
1.6 litre (ie what we had in 1977)
Round and round it goes. Where it stops nobody knows
yikes!
The same applies to all sorts of other things two.
Of course gearboxes are different. We keep getting more gears. 8 gears next is just stupid
turbo obviously
i guess on the plus side, if we don't like the first 12 months, the final 6 will be the opposite :)
too
Why do I never notice spelling mistakes till it is too late

Ooh, Heikki News! I always love this daily! Thank you, Amy :)
I don't know about Tamara Ecclestone, but I ran into a friend of Bianca Symmonds recently - apparently there's little love lost between her and Pat (but she's still an avid racing fan, because, well, it's awesome).
I have sky, though not the sports package. You can take the basic channels which is about £20 a month and then have sports on a month by month basis during the season. The only problem is that you must take the sports for 31 days and then it takes another 30 days to cancel them. In theory, you could just have sports March until July, cancel them and then restart for September until November, the rest of the time you'd have to take the basic £20 package. You are allowed to stop and start packages as often as you like within the subscription period as long as you take it for the month and then have the one post post cancellation period.
More like £5 a race i would say!
I heat gunned mine and it worked for 2 months or so then it packed up again....
Morning :)
At least you don't have to pay the full whack for the full 18 months, if F1 turns out to be boring you can offload the 'extras' and drop to the most basic package for the rest of the term, I think?
I suppose Sky like it when people aren't so proactive and just pay all year. :) It does seem like a lot of faffing but for the cost saving I'm sure it's worth it.
Well you would save yourself 4 * 16 quid or whatever it is for the sports since you'd only need 8 months per year, guess it depends if you would watch any other sports

we don't need basic package though. we'd only get that because we have to, because of f1.
Is Sky Sports available via Freeview's Top UP TV?
some, but we don't have enough info on packages yet. if they put f1 on ss4, then no.
also, not in hd on freeview.
Yet. That should change when the digital swichover finishes
there's no guarantees of that? or have sky committed?
True, I can't see SD being the norm in 5 years time
too much speculation for my liking :)
HD has spoiled us. It even irritates me when the forum switches to a Lo Def feed :D
agreed.
digital switch over doesn't finish until 2013, so that's a whole season guaranteed to be in SD if we go the freeview route.
I hadn't realised it but yes it is, £24 per month for SS1 and SS2. Still a lot of money. I live in an area with a restricted Freeview service and only get half the channels, there's no word on the site about whether the paid channels will even be available to me
If available, it's still cheaper than shelling out for a SKy or Cable package. Still sucks though
Definitely cheaper, but still not affordable.
can you not got to that channel and see if it's there? ours says "no data" because we haven't bought a CAM thing.
I don't think it is because I had no idea Sky Sports was on Freeview already until a few minutes ago.
I've also got a BT Vision box and checking the site now, SS1&2 is £17.40 per month on that. The aerial connector broke some time ago and I've not replaced the box yet, I ought to get on that. :)
I have a very cheap Freeview box alongside it which I use instead, perhaps it isn't picking up some of the channels because it is very cheap :) :)
To be fair, ss4 is for stuff like speedway and repeats, I highly doubt Sky will stick something they probably paid a lot of money on and it not being on the two main channels.
Speaking of speedway, Amy, I notice your daily forgets to note the moment Heikki became awesome and went to a speedway meeting, which is slightly disappointing...
does it even have a CAM slot?
No but the BTV does
The worry is that they split it across SS1 and 2
phew
Who's Cam?
Agreed, if they stick it on one channel that brings the cost down quite nicely, I could afford that
I thought the package was with both?
:)
yeah it is: http://www.topuptv.com/skysports/
am only worried if it moves off of those two. again to early to speculate.
:(
Just re-checking the sites and I was wrong on the Top Up TV cost. It was £24 just for SS1, and £33 for SS1+SS2. Ouch.
BT is £12.30 for a single channel or £17.40 for both but you do have to pay another £4 subs for the service.
If you use Freesat, are you allowed to just subscribe to Sky Sports?
is skysports on freesat?
http://www.sky.com/shop/freesat/home/what-can-i-watch/
don't know much about it to be honest.
It is but I think it'll be worth checking what sports are on Sky during the next few races.
Changing the subject temporarily, for anyone still looking to join google+ here's a link via twitter http://twitter.com/#!/9to5Google/status/99831263518666752
ooh, assumed everyone was on there already. are you jackie? you can circle christine here: https://plus.google.com/112564622463572350003
Ah I think there are two Freesats, the other is this one http://www.freesat.co.uk/what-you-get/our-channels
Doesn't look like it is on either though
so the choices are:
SD - bt vision or freeview
HD - sky
failing that, try and get a big dish and pick up free to air canal+ coverage.
Was just about to join, though since I'm an anti-social so and so I don't know if I'd use it
social networking overload :)
The only reasons I haven't joined is because I don't know whether I would use it or if it would suck up even more time :)
well maybe, I like twitter, hated facebook and finally managed to delete my hardly ever used account there a few weeks ago, don't know if I'd use this
Virgin Media too, but you have to live in a cabled area.. and you'd have to deal with Virgin Media. :)
I think they're fine. So much better than the Ntl days
ah-ha. well we have to move to put up a dish, so i guess we can move into a cable area too :)
any excuse to move ;)
I'm seriously thinking of trying the first non BBC race as highlights and listening to the commentary on 5 Live if I feel deperately sad about missing the thing live
hehe. the risk is we move to a noisy area and then that affects podcasting.
#middleclassproblems
I still see a lot of complaints on Twitter and so forth, they had a long way to go though! I was with them for a while, then another time I was with Telewest who were much better, so when they merged I hoped they'd take the best bits of both into VM - but I moved to a non-cable area.
part of me thinks we have to make a stand and not just give in to paid coverage
That would be good but it'll only work if we can stream :D
/not already caved in.
it'll be just like indycar :(
even worse, i can see the live comments being a battle between the haves and the have nots. gonna be a fun 2012.
I would be so much more annoyed with Valencia if I'd paid £24 to watch a poo race
Find someone you know who has Sky. I'd rather watch it at home but if I can't I'll go to Dad's.
That'll be fun for Australia, knocking on my friend's door :)
How do the people from the states, who don't get to see the race live get on in the comments during the race, or don't they comment?
eheheheheh
I'm just waiting for my mate who has Sky at £80 a month to start bragging...
when races are streamed live, they join in, sometimes people are watching on dodgy streams.
Agreed and it'll be worse, the number of people who use live threads for F1 is much higher.
Hah :)
Maybe we need to have Badger-esque meet ups on non BBC race days. Find a pub willing to put up with us and charge for tickets
it's a good plan... but australia?
Schucks... there has to be a downside
Badger are asking about interest in doing just that
The problem is that we are all so spead out across the country it would be difficult to find a meet-up that wasn't more expensive to travel to than paying for Sky
I've done that once, admittedly we may have got lucky with a hotel willing to put a TV in the dining area and let us sit there at 5am. They thought we were mad. Or it might've been Japan at 2am, I can't remember.
I wish they would come out and say which races the BBC will cover and which channel/(s) Sky will show the coverage on, we can't really plan without it
Yes that's a problem.
Another is that people then like to talk all the way through it.
Does anyone know how you can test if you can receive a signal from Canal+ ?
to me, it's either sell a kidney and go all out for sky, move house and do it properly. or give up and follow something else. can't see that decision coming before march though.
worst case scenario - we can't do f1 debrief of the factbyte factbox. upside - internal organs in full working order :)
Which format?
I think that's really the crux of the matter if you run a website, you really need it to do the work but it increases hosting costs considerably
Hehe, how would I know #nottootechsavvy
I think you need a satellite dish which isn't from Sky, and point it in the right direction.
No, I mean, how do you receive your programming. Did you say Sky earlier?
i think our hosting still costs more than sky a year. but hosting, plus sky makes it quite an expensive preposition.
Yes, unfortunately I succumbed to the dark side for my daughters entertainment a few years ago
Could we go to a rnon BBC ace on the cheap, I mean cheaper than a sky subscription? that might make the situation more bearable
A proposition perhaps :)
Ah but you could both watch Aston Villa live. ;)
damn you autocorrect :)
:D
hehe, we don't really have time for more tv.
You can all come round my house. There are two benefits to this:
a) you get to come to Newcastle
b) I will force you to watch the speedway afterwards
Win-win. If you want.
Maybe I could get into BTCC instead of F1, it'd be cheaper
Ooh, I forget I like them :)
Or, drop the Autosport and F1Racing subscriptions, that'll pay for about half the skysports
will it? sadly we don't have either.
except for the online thing, which is essential.
well half of the sports package bit of the costs.
ha.
Did people see the links to a government petition about loss of live free to air coverage, as if that would help. Slacktivism
and also every petition was discounted as not being something the government would control. must admit all the tweets about it and the twitter accounts begging for followers on the premise that their username (keep_F1_free) would do anything to help
hey, I'm Scottish... every little helps
hehe!
@pauldirestaf1: Good luck to @GaryPaffett and @JamieGreenRacin at nurburgring DTM this weekend. Give it large
@Susie_Stoddart: @pauldirestaf1 thanks Paul!!! We're even from the same country and you don't wish me luck!!! ☹
he's not having a good few days with the ladies
I don't get F1 Racing but I should cut down Autosport.. is the digital edition any cheaper than the paper one?
Hah :)
What else has happened?
i need to steal suzie's smiley's.
☹
or rather, frownies.
for those playing along at home I have chosen my Hockenheim hotel, the price is good and my contacts there will try and swing the wifi for free instead of its stupid hotel price, and a possible upgrade (although no promises there as they're busy at F1 time)
https://twitter.com/#!/pauldirestaf1/status/99571568803463168
hehehe.
Justin Wilson just crashed in practice at Mid Ohio
Officials using a back brace to help @JustinWilson22 get out of the car following an unplanned trip through a tire barrier. #indycar - @curtcavin
Aww I saw that :(
Please do keep us informed :) definitely interested in sidepodhockenheim
(still seems a long word to me)
sidepodhockers.
Sidepockeneheim?
:) :)
He's so tall he needs a back brace to get in and out of the car anyway ;)
I was telling my friend at work about my trip and she said 'hmm that name sounds familiar, I'm sure my German friend lives there or works there' so she messaged her and yes, she works there, in the very hotel I was already considering. Small world :D
Sounds like slang for hockey.
Ooh sounds intriguing.
Just... perfect
The pun works perfectly. fate that we must go.
Hockencast?
Hehehe. That is awesome.
Ooh!
its a 35 minute train ride from Frankfurt airport then a 20 minute train ride to Hockenheim station each day, from where you can get a shuttle to the track. Perrrrrfect.
If I was to book today total cost for 4 nights Thurday-Monday is 284,68 €, 248,14 pounds or 387,81 AU$. Mmmm less than $100 per night.
Small world
my finger is so close to hitting 'book' but I really should do my flights first :(
In the meantime I should be finding somewhere to stay in Sydney for Davis Cup which is oddly harder than finding somewhere in the middle of Germany.
Plus, the date isn't fixed yet
I'm not waiting for that, if it moves I'll just be touristy :)
I know a good hostel that have rooms as well as dorms. A ferry ride away from Circular Quay
That sounds ideal. :)
Not bad at all
wha? there's nothing in hockeneminem is there?
heidelberg looks lovely
ooh, they make printers.
I am trying to avoid hostels, even private rooms, but all recommendations welcome :) We were originally trying to stay in the area of the Royal Sydney Golf Club but theres not much out there.
That's where the Beetles were made
Ping: http://www.f1minute.com/news/mclaren-branch-out-into-rugby-union-and-tour-de-france
http://www.glenferrielodge.com/ in Kirribilli
Actually, it's not a hostel but I can confirm it's nice in a basic and affordable way
Or you could ask Jeremy for a recommendation
ooh that does look nice but perhaps not in the right part of town for us :( if we can't stay close by we'll probably do CBD for ease of transport.
Jeremy has already asked if I'll be visiting :) I'll be up on Saturday morning and coming back Sunday night so I'm not sure there'll be much free time between tennis.
It's 5mins to the ferry.
but we'd have to transfer twice, I really am trying to keep it even simpler than that #lazy
Fair enough, where's the tournament held?
Rose Bay. The Rose Bay and Kirribilli ferries do depart from the same wharf though so I'll keep it in mind :)
Nice part of town
it sounds like a pretty snooty golf club but they wanted to play on grass courts so thats where we're going! Fingers crossed Roger shows up
Why would he not?
That was Hamburg
Mr C is right. Heidelberg make printers
#nothere
the tie starts 5 days after the US Open final and its a long way to fly for 3 days of tennis. It's rare that he plays Davis Cup anyway. He did say he would play this tie but that was before they drew Australia, and he did also say that he didn't want to draw Australia. It's 50-50 I'd say.
Hey everyone,
Justin Wilson may not be in this weekend's IndyCar race at mid-Ohio - news is a coming in...
we're not going to liverpool, silly :)
From CC:
Oh wait - just noticed Gavin already put it up
Hope he is OK. I always worry about anyone that tall in a crash
Yeah, my Dad works with them and I think he's been there...
The words that struck me were "through the tyre barrier". Mid-Ohio is not a nice place to have a big crash.
Sounds quite serious.
On a slightly different note, I can hear the Field Day festival from bedroom window. Willy Mason played a set earlier on.
Am finally watching the Hungarian GP now (at last).
Thinking to myself, Pastor Maldonado may well be the first properly bald F1 driver since Roberto Moreno.
Hopefully just a precaution
Absolutely. No news yet on indycar.com, so no idea what actually happened.
This is rather less promising
Interesting, Martin Plowman (finally making his IndyCar début this weekend) has two Twitter accounts - one for his own personal / racing exploits and a separate account for when he's in the car, that an assistant uses.
Jake Query has just confirmed that Pagenaud will be in Wilson's car for this race. A bit obvious, but simply confirmation.
Hmmm, the amount of wine you drink, I do not think one of your kidneys to be worth much, and before you go about selling both kidneys, please make sure that Chrisitne is listed as the benefittsureary (sic) of your life insurance policy.....
That should give her a couple of months of Sky, after the other major expenses are done with...
Sure, I think you are supposed to call up a number and its is not like the guys running Sky are hacking the phones or anything, so it should work, let me try
Let see, Country code of the UK, rest of the number...... one ring, two rings HEY, MY PHONE LINE JUST DIED ON ME!!!!!!! WTH ?
Amy 06/08/2011 at 15:46:39
wha? there's nothing in hockeneminem is there?
heidelberg looks lovely
Why does Heidelberg sound familiar to somebody like me across the ocean..... ?
maybe you have one nearby? Melbourne has a Heidelberg :D
To go back to what we were talking about earlier, I've been doing some reading and I thought I would share it here in case it was of any help to anyone.
If like me your Freeview signal comes from a repeater relay not a main transmitter, you can't get Sky Sports or ESPN on Freeview. I checked. I get 19 channels instead of the 40+ most of the rest of the country get. You can check yours here.
This makes it not worth my while to replace my broken BT Vision box to get Sky Sports because I can't, but if anyone else is in the right area - and most are now - and is with BT it is worth looking at getting SS through them because it is cheaper than the other options.
Now, I can try to persuade the landlord to get on the roof and point the aerial at the main transmitter, in which case it opens up that option again. :) :)
So I looked at Sky TV+broadband+phone not incl SS and I looked at my BT bill for same and they are pretty much identical on price, the difference is BT TV is all on demand with a bit of HD while Sky is more linear with more HD and a better PVR. Ultimately with adding SS it makes it £62 per month which is a heck of a lot but I'll have more Cool Stuff, but I'd need to save up for an HD TV..
Lots to think about.. #rubchin #rubchin
Sadly no good to me. What I get is purely at the behest of my landlord and the building in which I live.
Cheers anyhoo though
:)
I think a lot of people are restricted like that and I'd have to check again with the landlord to see if I'd be allowed (others in the building are).
plus the possibility of pre-season offers.
Yes indeed, and introduce a friend (I think I'd rather it were money off the subscription!).
A headache to think about nearer the time perhaps.
For what it is worth I checked my tenancy agreement and it says "not to install a satellite dish without Landlord's consent, which will not be unreasonably withheld" so it is worth checking the small print.
Enjoy a little something from the Sidepodcast back catalogue.

Recommend 6 people and that's half your subscription fee reclaimed
Doesn't the recomendee have to sign up though?
You only need someone who has Sky already.
Oh yes, but presumably if we all work this right, everyone can recommend someone else and get something back
I wouldn't recommend someone unless I knew that they wanted sky in the first place. I told my dad about if and it was about 2 weeks after he signed up that we both got the vouchers
I'm wondering about being very self indulgent and blogging about viva's 500th blog post
Yes do
Not sure what to say about it though other than to highlight some of the fab guest posts we've had
look back over some of your favourite posts. first ever, compared to most recent?
Good plan, I might just do that, can't believe it's been 2 years since the blog started #blamesSidepodcast :-)
heh. here's to the next 500 ;)
mostly written by Mav (hehe I can say that cause he's on holiday)
Nearly done watching the Hungarian GP - interesting little race.
Hamilton was definitely a bit unfortunate in the last twenty laps.
or... hotheaded.
There is that, but it was changeable at the time, so I'll give him that.
the call was unfortunate. spinning into traffic was silly.
Spinning into traffic was moronic. Was a bit surprised MB and DC seemed so OK with it. Ham drove Di Resta clean off the track.
Worked out incredibly well for Vettel in the end though.
Should mention after the race Brundle admitted on second viewing he could see what was wrong with it. Ant also said what Lewis did was fine, interesting how the drivers all said it was OK.
i wish i could remember who did the same last year? was it vettel in spa? damn my memory.
I see. Will not watch post-race until later - am going to dip into the pub first. I haven't been there in weeks.
Can't help but notice the massive gaps in the stands too.
Ant said on TCF that on second viewing that he would have given a penalty too.
Can't help but have a nagging doubt that part of the reason he got a penalty was because he is Lewis though!
I disagree with that. He spun into traffic. That's pretty much not on in any form of motorsport for any driver
he got a penalty because it was a crazy move. he could've waited ten seconds and still been fine.
He span into traffic, that's enough as it is. I don't think McNish or any of the stewards cared who it was, the penalty fits the crime
I must say, as much as I like MB and DC, they came up with some awful, awful puns during the race.
So why did three grand prix drivers initially say it would have been a bit harsh? Ant even said that as a racing driver he would have done the same.
I agree it was a silly move though.
Crofty compared some of the battles to pirates on ships going after treasure. If that's not reason enough to get people to swap over... :)
I'm surprised at that, considering what happened to Di Resta
because he was in the lead and obviously refused to wait for traffic to pass knowing jenson was approaching. Lewis is a racer and he's going to do things like that to keep position, it doesn't mean to me at least that the stewards will pick him out because of that. he's just been much more aggressive this year in his ability to race.

He seemed rather calm about the whole thing, although he did add that Hamilton would have hit him had he not gone off the grass!
as someone (maybe steven) pointed out at the time. di resta is heading for mclaren, no need to rock that boat.
Exactly why Hamilton deserved the penalty.
A bit of Wilson / Pagenaud news

Re: Hungary
Awful day for Merc and Renault
Not Mercedes then? It's rumoured that it was they who paid Force India to settle with Liuzzi...
I'm more confused now:
Definitely different that "going through the tyres", but it's an IndyCar press release, so I'm suspicious about how they words things
Just got to the podium stuff. Interesting to see Ricciardo had most of a lap on Liuzzi - that didn't take long.
Hungary have a quick little driver in GP3 - one wonders if he'll eventually make it.
TracksideOnline tweeted that he bounced heavily on the ground/bumps and that was the problem
I see.
How well do you know your Formula 1 history?
To learn about this and more events that helped shape Formula 1, get your copy of That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories (Part 2).
Right folks, I have to disappear for a short while. Should be back later.
Hmm. Tough one ;)
alonso? was it wet, i can't remember?
Wasn't it Button?
oooh. alonso's first win was in hungary though wasn't it? or am i just hopeless at this game?
I think this is the point we say... buy the book to find out. :)
Or in your case... read the book you have bought.
#bugger
If anyone (Jackie or Steven Roy especially) wants to know what evil we Canacks can come up with when we purposely decide to build a race track I found these websites about Mosport, home of the Canadian Grand Prix before moving to Montreal for 1968, 1970 and 1977 onwards.
First a site about what it is like to drive a lap of Mosport in 2010. Comes with a map of the 1961 circuit.
http://thegarageblog.com/garage/a-lap-of-mosport/
Second: todays current track map, from the mosport website itself. To have the proper orientation flip the current track map 180 degrees to match the 1961 map.
http://www.mosport.com/tracks/mosport-international-raceway/maps-a-pix
Big differences from 1961 to 2010:
1) Track widened by 10 feet, so all turns have a wider radius.
2) The crest of 2 has been cut a little bit.
3) 10 feet of evaluation at turn 7 has been removed. As cars used to go airborne crusting the hill there. Maybe this is what happened to JYS ?
But that's it. That's lesser changes than Monza! Why can we have an F1 race here?
According to Wiki, that would be G.B. 2006
Oh, and the 68 and 70 Canadian G.P. was held at St. Jovite, my home track. How they pulled it off then is beyond me.
You're hopeless. Hungary was never the second race of any F1 season.....
I had to check where the second race was and what year it happened, but I was right with the details. Fisi and Alonso where both driving for Benetton at the time.
wha?
Could you believe that Mosport was getting too dangerous by 1968 standards? I guess we could not find any European-style hay bales for the drivers to crash into....., and Mont-Tremblant / (Ste, Jovite) was considered "modern" and "safe"
Ooooops!
Well, mr. C here is what you said"
Here is my rebuttal:
I did not know the exact year of this, but I did know that Benetton had both Fisichella and Alonso. If you can cross reference this, you can see that this would have been in 2002 and maybe 2003. as Alonso has picked up a couple of wins in 2002, the correct answer has to be 2002, in Malaysia for Alonso's first win.
So coming back to our statement, which you let the two choices being either Alonso winning his orgignal are in Hungary (proven to be incorrect) or that you are hopeless in this game, you leave us no choice but to take the second option.....
Sorry. But you can not beat the logic here.
Considered safe, for the speed and performance of the cars. As the cars got faster and started relying on aero grip, tracks had to change. you just can't have a flugplatz with skirt cars.
Mosport is a very fast track and on the fastest parts the railing and walls are quite close. Look at what happened when the 911 that was pushed off by a prototype last year.
As it stands now, Tremblant is not all that bad. Only turn 1 is "if-y"
This is definitely Alonso's first win: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_Hungarian_Grand_Prix
phew!
Oh, well, I need to read better.
darn, I wish I could say that Button "raised the BAR of his F1 carreer " by winning the 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix for his maiden win, but he was actually driving for Hoinda at the time....
Which future champion secured his first win on this day in F1 history, taking a surprise win at a wet Hungarian GP?
Hmm. Tough one ;)
Hey wait a second, as much as I need to read better too, this question is calling for a wet Hungarian GP making this Button's win. Alonso's win was dry.
Darn Looks like I owe mr. C an apology....
"Sorry Mr. C".
Why can not I remember Alonso's first win although? Was I that much of a Fisichella fan back then to hope that the Benetton would get Fisi a tons of wins? Must have been.
Question: GP+ comes in a PDF format right? So how would you upload that to read on your iPad?
You mean there is no app for that?
You can sync it via iTunes, or people seem to like Good Reader: http://www.goodiware.com/goodreader.html
Via iBooks?
Yes.
cool. Thanks for the help, I'll give it a go :)
no worries, the comments are meant to create discussion :)
I download it straight to Goodreader. Put a 'g' in front of the web address of the document, it's very nice
I don't follow what you mean by that?
When you get the url to download gp+, put 'g' in front of the http and Goodreader opens and begins downloading the pdf
In the browser, that is
For me, it's easier than downloading and sync'ing
On the iPad. I see.
i'm favouring downloading and syncing!
:)
Blooming eck I've just been looking at the price of spa grandstands... and I thought Silverstone was pricey
I went with goodreader. more options than iBooks. Used GPWeek as a test...
Evening all
Have I missed anything exciting today?
That's why I'm not going back this year, ouch :(
Took me a bit by surprise, F1 is rapidly becoming unafordable
I'm going to a classic car race tomorrow, because our clients paid for our tickets. They are 1300DKK for 1 day in a grandstand!
Amy is trying to get to Germany, I don't know if prices have been released yet..
Is that a lot? :)
Is that good?
That sounds like a lot although for all I know it could be like Italian Lira and be 50p
What?! 250 CDN $? For a historic race? That is NUTS!
Can I interest anyone in the Silverstone 6 Hours in September? I'll be going. Sadly the same day as the Italian GP>
My Widget says its £130!
Wow. I went to a historic meeting at Donington in May for about 15 quid
OUCH. I guess it is priced like that to keep the likes of us out #fail
The last one I went to at Knockhill was cheaper than that and it had Jackie Stewart and a Spitfire doing a display
Must resist urge to be cheeky again.....
I think I have dodged one dropped Guillotine blade today so no one minds if I lurk for a while....
At St Jovite it's 10-15-25$ (Fri-Sat-Sun).
Guess what? You can pay another £150 for a charity ride with TomK! Bargain! ;)
Surely not
Yeah. It's why I haven't been yet!
I would want to sit next to him for a stint at Le Mans for that
$490 canadian bucks for a decent 3 day seat in Montreal in 2012 ? are they nuts ?
http://www.bookf1.com/canadian-formula-1-grand-prix-201/tickets.htm
I think I will check ou the actual circuit web site....
Yeah, you may want to take a pass if Allan or Rocky are driving!
No way would I pass on a chance to sit next to McNish.
Much better choice... 540 for gold and 430 for silver. The price has only gone up 40$ in 5-6 years. Quite reasonable.
The best tickets to get are in sections 11 and 12. 12 with higher section numbers, and 11 with lower section numbers. (closser to the middle of the V formed by 11 and 12.

Steven Roy 06/08/2011 at 20:59:38
Then you are implying that Christine and / or mr. C at some time was boring, Steven ? :P
Looks like Pagenaid did great job in quali after being dropped in the deep end. P18 is very respectable in a car he had driven fitted with someone else's seat and wearing someone else's racesuit.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/93667
No. I was suggesting it was unusual for you not to take a shot if one was open to you

Some idiot of an erk but the bullet in backwards into tle belt and it blew up in the chamber! Not that I ever cared to find out what my kidney actually does look like but it fricken' hurts!
Just to prove that nothing is new. I just caught the latest F1Minute about McLaren making a racing bike. Lotus did the same thing almost 20 years ago for Chris Boardman. The Lotus bike looks more high tech than the McLaren
http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/latest/474770/boardman-hands-over-his-lotus-superbike-for-new-liverpool-museum.html
https://octanemanagement.ca/paiement/main.cfm?l=en
How about that. $430 Cdn for the decent seats at Gilles whne you buy from the track itself. Somebody, somebody is really ripping us off!
24 is nice. I was there in 1991... Lucked in to the ticket at the last minute. My best friend calls me up at 10 am on Sunday and asks me if I want to go... Got a nice shot of Hill in his Jordan that I quite like, though it ain't great due to the surrounding, but I like it.
Oh just about 250 Canadian dollars cheaper than a seat at spa
I'm editing a month's worth of photos. Like, 1000 of them. It's a lotta work!
And we just rattled off the prime passing locations at Gilles. The only seats higher are the 540's which are the start/finish line seats see the pit action seats.
673 Canadian equivalent
Is someone liking Gilles even more ?
Does anyone know which european circuit is the cheapest for grandstand tickets?
Think it used to be Hungary, not sure about now
I did the gold's in 2000 and 2001 and by far, section 11 and 12 are MUCH better. Not even in a value for money sort of thing. The only thing that the golds give you is the start, with the grid stopped. 20+ cars sitting there, on the happy pedal, is quite impressive.
Monaco. No Grandstand means that they can not charge you anything.... :P Getting a standing room only ticket there might set you back 4000 although.....
I think that if your line of sight is not blocked by that tree, then Section 12 must be awesome. My line of sight from section 11 down the pit straight was blocked by that covered granstand which I think was the gold seats.
Man, this sounds like the best game ever. Who needs grand theft auto when you have... street cleaning simulator!
http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/sim/streetcleaningsim/index.html
The golds are opposite the pits, on the inside of the track. The covered grandstand, right next to the pit-out lane is corporate hospitality (not Paddock club, I believe) I would love to get a Firday in hospitality.... I would spend the day right at pit-out, where they do practice starts.
12 with the tree in the way, is sections 4-8, and higher rows, so further north if you will. 11 with the tent in the way is sections 1-4, so further east if you will.
Is that worse that Train Simulator? 1D gameplay... WOW!
You have surely mentioned the Out Run car simulator... http://technabob.com/blog/2011/08/04/outrun-augmented-reality-driving-game/ And no, I am not calling you Shirley.
Why? Who would decide that would make a game?
It seems to have another game in the series called Garbage Truck Simulator and Tanker Truck Simulator. Exciting stuff.
The player reviews are having me in stitches:
"The game every street-sweeping hobbyist has eagerly been anticipating with great reason"
haha, they have an average review of 9.2 on those :D
Well, at least you can have fun in a tanker truck simulator by trying to jackknife the trailer into on coming traffic....
What was really fun with indycar was coming dead last in qual and making a u turn and drive the wrong way at teh indy 500 and see who chickens out first. Of course you get DQ'ed, but that was not the point.
Sentences you thought you would never read.
I see loads of these types of games ... bus driver simulator, fork lift simulator ...
What's the point and who buys these???
sort of like this... http://www.ebaumsworld.com/video/watch/81095931/
They all come from the same company - Excalibur
They just. keep. making them.
double car crash bonus! :)
End of game for crashing into police car.... :(
Which means people are buying them?
They must be! People out there do buy them. One of my friends who works at GAME says they do sell, you'd be surprised.
again, it makes me want to refer to this video.
The safety car just broke down in the ALMS race!
I wonder if you can park it across the railroad tracks, for extra points.
2 hours in to the ALMS race the skies have opened up and are depositing respectable amounts of water on the Mid-Ohio track.
ESPN3 won't work for me. What stream are you using, Bert?
Indirectly ESPN3, through Rogers Sports Net on TV.
In ALMS news... The 62 Risi spent many minutes under the yellow flag debating staying on slicks. On the last lap of the yellow the 62 pits and goes to full wets. On the first green flag, the 62 makes contact with an M3 and is out of the race.
The ALMS race seems to be taking a page from the 2011 Canadian GP. It is absolutely pouring down down. Everyone is having to tip-toe around. In a single corner 2 911s and a Vette hve gone off. Level headed driving will greatly rewarded.
A Flying lizard in the kitty litter brings out a full course yellow.
Read that again and pretend you don't know anything about racing. :)
I have a sidepodspace query, a geniune one that may sound silly bit I am genuinely intrigued...
:D
Does it worry you more that we all read that and thought there was nothing unusual in it?
Do go on.
Shoot
Not Jordan
I don't think that the ALMS race will restart, with 15 minutes to go.
What would happen if you took a compass onto another planet? Would it still point at earth or just get a bit lost?
It would be lovely to be able to see it, but nothing works for me. It wants to remain hidden from me today.
Solves that, then.
How did Oliver Gavin in the Corvette do?
It would be influenced by whatever the biggest magnetic field near it was. Earth's magnetic field is too small to have an effect on another planet
My first thought is that it depends on the magnetic fields of that planet.
Evening folks,
Just back in the door
Pull up a chair. IndyCar qualy is just coming on Speed, maybe it already happened, though.
#nospoilers
It happened about three / four hours ago. I know the result, but I do not have a TV
I saw the result hours ago
hehe
TV presenter just said about Ryan H-R, "he's not on new tires, he's on probation."
Great segue!
#notreally
What did he do to be put on probation?
Controversially
;)
Caused six accidents this year
I gather Mid-Ohio has gone red flag.
oops
There are 3 of them on probation and at least one other who should be way beyond probation by now but who seems to have diplomatic immunity
Speed? What Speed?
"Avoidable contact" for RHR, Conway and Tagliani
What does probation involve?
http://wapo.st/oPg8VU
ooh, sorry, I always do that Versus and Speed are right next to each other on my channels. :)
It's on Versus.
I prefer to call it idiocy.
Being kind to race steward Brian Barnhart, who - let's be honest - has far gone passed any kind of usefulness. In fact, he's just useless.
Being told he is a naughty boy and if he keeps offending he may end up on the naughty step
So far it seems to mean that Brian Barnhart is disappointed in them.
Oh so it's like the new F1 3 reprimands rule
Probation in US racing is about as useful as a greenhouse in the arctic.
Less effective than that
Could be worse though. NASCAR's version of "probation" just about extends to "don't spear a guy into the grandstands"
Anyone know who's doing tomorrow's daily?
Lou, she tweeted it would be a little late
Grand job. :)
Perfect
Heading off to bed so I will bid you all adieu xx
night jackie
Night Jackie
Oh...... I have just hit nerd jackpot
Justin Wilson injury update;
His Dreyer & Reinbold team reported the lanky Brit sustained a compression fracture to his fifth vertebra
http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/article/indycar-justin-wilson-medical-update/
I really like this mid-Ohio track with elevation changes.
Saw that earlier = ouchio !!
Decent circuit to drive, but rarely the best for racing.
You could tell the way he winced even though he was on the back board when they got him out that something really wasn't right. :(
Pagenaud was saying 'nothing fit!'. :) and it was the first time he didn't bring his gear. He thanked everyone who gave him things to wear today.
Hmmm, I have lost all my flesh colour model paint, but I have found my "American War" book and my cell phone, so I guess I am ahead by $400....
Jupiter is thought to have metallic hydrogen near or at the core. That is one of the things that the Juno mission is going to try to find out. I guess the sun's magnetic field would influence the compass if a planet has not magnitism of its own hence my answer
:D
I have now won all 45 career races on the Red Bull karty thing so I can forget about it for a while.
#notcompetitive
Although it looks like we could race each other on it should we choose to do so
PING: http://sidepodcast.com/post/daily-7th-august-2011
not as late as i thought it would be :)
You could scrub it and start again
i could... but i wont :)
