From father to son; what better way to start a day?

What's that? It's Friday already?! Fantastic. That means it's time to present you with a whole new daily to get you through the joy that is Friday and guide you into the first weekend of the F1 break weekend. Elsewhere away from F1, I'm very excited that Football League football returns this weekend (with the Premier League back next weekend), but if you're not into football why don't you spend some time exploring the further branches of Sidepodcast's kingdom? There's always the Sidepodcast Wiki, or perhaps you could bring the Sidepodcast last.fm group back up to date or join the Sidepodcast Book Group, as long as you come back here and join in with the Daily. Deal? Deal. Take that, Noel Edmonds!

Paddock News

To be Frank, it's time to move on Williams - It seems Adam Parr is determined to focus on the now and not the then by saying Williams aren't done with 2011 just yet. Come on chaps, let's get through the year and focus on 2012 because it's been a bit of a write off for this season sadly. At least you made a sexy livery and I got to write an emotional look at the status of the team. Plus Rubens is still being all Rubenstastic so it's not all bad.

Korea-ing off the scheduled timeline - Here we go again with the Indian Grand Prix as there are worries about the new circuit at Delhi not being ready for inspections and probably still being selotaped down 20 minutes before the race. OK, so a tad overreaction there (kind of!) but it does seem like Korea all over again doesn't it? Let's hope the Indian organisers and Chandhok Snr can get this all sorted.

Elsewhere...

Gimme a Minute, or 15 hours worth - This absolutely staggers me and what an achievement this is - congratulations to F1 Minute on recording 15 hours worth of F1 Minutes over the years and just an awesome job from Christine to still be doing a wonderful job today. Mr C also deserves credit for being the manda (Man panda) behind the scenes creating websites, apps and have you noticed that gorgeous little F1 Minute he made on the homepage? Very cool. Let's hope we get many more minutes to hear about the world of F1.

Can a 900 year old man turn 50 again? - Lord Moffat of the Steven variety, king of writing and all that is BBC, has announced how he has big plans for Doctor Who's 50th anniversary in 2013 but isn't spilling the details at this early stage. My predicition? The last few Doctors all meet up for a pint, get horribly drunk, one of them gets to know Captain Jack a little too much and rose Returns and Russell T Davies blows up at the end of the episode. Oh, and of course, an awful lot of running.

Classic Games and all that Jazz - Previously in the past I've briefly mentioned an absolutely wonderful game called Grim Fandango. It's a bit of a cult classic but it's easily one of the finest pieces of gaming I've ever played especially for it's storytelling. But Kotaku have had a look back at another reason why it was so wonderful - the original jazz pieces made for the game. Some absolutely stunning bits of music made up Grim Fandango. I implore you to try and find a cheap copy of the game and give it a go. So much fun and original storytelling that would make Hollywood jealous!

Everything is ripping me off and I'm ripping everything off - If you're going to click one link on this daily then please, please, please make it this. You have to see these videos of how, well, everything is a mix! Everything truly does take itself from everything else and this series of videos, currently up to part 3, make for an interesting, engrossing set of small videos that all go through a few minutes length. Plus they're so stylishly told it's hard to pull away from them once you start watching. Damn you everything. he says, stealing that from everything else.

Friday Fun!

Seeing as we have a mid-season break, I thought I would have a little bit of Friday Fun for the masses to encourage a bit of creative thinking down there in those lovely comments and you should absolutely join in if you have any ideas. I ask you, fellow F1 fans...

If there was an F1 Bingo card created to fill in during a race, what F1 cliche's could be part of the bingo card?

Lukeh's mind

To give a better idea, when you head off to the Bingo, you obviously get a bingo card and you mark off the numbers and so on and so on. But what if there was one for watching Formula 1? What cliches would be perfect for a F1 bingo card to tick off during a race ? Who knows, if we get enough brilliant ideas there may be a bit of photoshopping going on tonight when I get home from work...!

And that's that. To close off today's daily, why not a little song from this small British band known as Muse? They're alright, like. I've heard of them a few times. But yesterday I could not get a certain song out of my head and I know Gavin is a huge fan of this song so it seems only right, in true Radio Giggles fashion, to say this one's for you Mr Rubbergoat. Have a lovely day people and I'll see you in the comments.

Can a 900 year old man turn 50 again?

Don't do that. For a second I thought you meant Bernie. That would take away the only chance I have of enjoying F1 without his self indulgence

    Korea-ing off the scheduled timeline

Nice daily Lukeh, but by all reports, this delay is exclusively at the hands of Charlie. The Indian GP organisers have, by most accounts, been on time for much of the development, with many of the basic grandstand and circuit structures been completed as far back as May.

Ever been RickRolled? I've got something even better for the lovers of all things Finnish: Waynes Worlded!

    have you seen this:

    http://www.humblebundle.com/

some decent selection of independent games, they all work on windows/mac/linux

and, you pay what you want...

(curious statistic: linux users pay on average 50% more than mac users and almost 3 times as much as windows users)

  • Lukeh04/08/2011 at 23:32

Interesting. Of course if they were proper Finns 3 of them would be playing and the fourth would be sliding the Polo round the field

probably a group paying all together

the statistic about linux users paying more is not circumscribed to this bundle in particular, I've heard it before (don't remember where)

I started the PhD in early 2006, and should have finished earlier this year (5 years).

But writing the thesis took me roughly one year instead of the 6 months I've had in mind. Not all the time was focused on writing though, that's why it took me so long.

Anyway, it's not a big deal, I was just a couple of months behind schedule

Today we have the first attempt to launch the Juno mission to Jupiter. This is the one with the steel Lego figures. There are launch windows of up to 90 minutes every day for the next three weeks which NASA claims gives a 99% chance of a launch happening. I think if you asked NASA what the chance of getting wet if you fell in a swimming pool was they would say at least 75%.

Anyway today's launch attempt is scheduled for 11:34 Eastern or 16:34 UK time and the launch window is open for just over an hour. Weather today is 70% good.

i was pretty close to zzzz again and I decided I'd better check if it's my turn just in case. And it is!

  • Steven Roy05/08/2011 at 13:04

In another words, at the most 1 out of every 4 swimming pools has been drained, according to Steven Roy's NASA Stats. Even more reason to keep an eye out for small children around swimming pools....

Or 1 of every swimmers is dry

  • Amy05/08/2011 at 13:05

    Sadly not I'm afraid

ahh, sorry then but I cannot interrupt my process! Perhaps the Sunday writer (Lou?) will be much nicer than I :D

Or 1 of every 4 swimmers is dry

Kind of hard to get wet in an empty swimming pool, but if you are NASA, you have to factor in everything into their calculations, in this case of swimming pools, you are never going to stop drunken idiots from trying to swim in empty swimming pools....

Usually they try to take a running start to dive into the deep end.....

    Classic Darwin Award stuff ?

Diving into the deep end of an empty pool must get a Darwin Award

absolutely jackie. have been plugging the concept everywhere i can, but don't have capacity to write anything worthwhile (except maybe about objective-c programming).

hosting we can do though, more than one if it helps you.

  • Jackie05/08/2011 at 13:34

Speaking of stewards, it was interesting to note the other day that IndyCar have put Mike Conway, Alex Tagliani and Ryan Hunter-Reay on probation until the end of the year, but apparently said nothing regarding Helio Castroneves or EJ Viso - surely two of their worst offenders..?

More to do with multiple incidents throughout this year - while some of the racing has been good in IndyCar this season, I've also been disappointed by several boneheaded moves.

  • Jackie05/08/2011 at 13:49

What puts me off with the Indycar is all the non racing periods between the green flag bits, that and the adverts I just can't watch a whole race even though the heart is willing.

What puts me off with the Indycar is all the non racing periods between the green flag bits, that and the adverts I just can't watch a whole race even though the heart is willing.

If you can get Canal+, they show the races with US commentary, but with no ad breaks and yes - they often go yellow too easily; however NASCAR is worse for that. Much worse.

  • Steven Roy05/08/2011 at 13:53

At least someone is speaking a little sense regarding the TV deal

It took a while but finally someone on the inside has figured it out. Shame one of the established teams with decades of history couldn't do it but I am convinced Bernie has them all hypnotised.

  • Jackie05/08/2011 at 13:53

Canal+ is that an internet thing or a TV channel?

  • Steven Roy05/08/2011 at 13:54

  • Steven Roy05/08/2011 at 15:18

Reducing it to 2 points, it was first held in 1965 and ended in 1983

I thought it was started by Michelle Mutton. She must have just revived the original then

  • Pat W05/08/2011 at 15:19

Reducing it to 2 points, it was first held in 1965 and ended in 1983

Oh.. so not the head to head competition thing at all then. Non-Championship F1 race? 1983 so it could be.. Keke Rosberg for Williams?

  • Leigh O'Gorman05/08/2011 at 15:19

I thought it was started by Michelle Mutton. She must have just revived the original then

In a way, but also not in a way. She revived the title rather than the format.

So Danny Sullivan must have dragged the Tyrrell up to second

  • Leigh O'Gorman05/08/2011 at 15:21

Every year from 1965-'83 (except '66, '80, '81 and '82), teh "Race of Champions" was held at Brands Hatch.

At half GP distance, the race was a lengthy sprint race for F1 machines and drivers.

    Pat = 7 pts

    Steven Roy = 2 pts

  • Leigh O'Gorman05/08/2011 at 15:22

So Danny Sullivan must have dragged the Tyrrell up to second

Sullivan started 5th and battled with Rosberg for the win right to the flag. Rosberg won by 0.5 of-a-second.

You only do it once a month. It's easy when you write something to be too critical. You follow Heikki during the month. Then research your post, write your post and check it over a couple of times. So to you there is a lot more repetition than there is to those of us who only read your post. If you feel there is not enough new material write your post on something else. It is your post and not Heikki's

You think that's fixable? It would never drive the same

  • Lukeh05/08/2011 at 20:45

You think that's fixable? It would never drive the same

Maybe they could selotape the back end of a ford fiesta on to save repairs, top gear style. proper cost cutting

  • Steven Roy05/08/2011 at 20:46

You think that's fixable? It would never drive the same

McLaren can fix it. It will be a huge job and a huge bill but McLaren will fix it.

I can't imagine what speed he was doing to do that much damage though

  • Steven Roy05/08/2011 at 20:48

Maybe they could selotape the back end of a ford fiesta

Interesting theory although as the McLaren is rear wheel drive and the Fiesta is front wheel drive it would mean there would be nothing connecting the engine to the road. Which would help prevent future accidents.

we have a question for the comments, that only commenters can answer.

we had an idea that would both promote christine's book, and at the same time possibly create conversation in the comments, on a daily basis.

having implemented the idea, we're now not sure if it's:

    a) an innovative way to create F1 discussion

    b) a shameless advert that has no place in the comments

give us a few moments and we'll show you an example of what we're proposing.

once you've seen it though, the question is important, will it help create discussion, or simply annoy people on a day-by-day basis?

  • That'll be the Day05/08/2011 at 21:15

How well do you know your Formula 1 history?

    - Which racing legend passed two Ferrari's on the penultimate of the German Grand Prix to seal his final F1 victory?

A couple of times a day

How often has Leigh chucked in an impromptu quiz this week? And people love to answer the questions even if they are only guessing

  • jackie05/08/2011 at 21:20

    Love it

Alternative view that you may not like but I am being honest. I like the idea of something that would allow more F1 comment but if you were to advertise the book every day I think that would annoy after a while, plus, if you are giving away 1/365th of the book every day why would people buy?

  • Mr C05/08/2011 at 21:20

A couple of times a day

    just a teaser.

  • Steven Roy05/08/2011 at 21:24

  • Mr C05/08/2011 at 21:26

How about F1minute brought to you in sponsorship with the book?

hehe, now that is advertising :)

it's hard to split the text because we're doing the same thing on twitter: http://twitter.com/365F1Stories

but it's less annoying on there because you can just unfollow the account. will have a look though.

  • jackie05/08/2011 at 21:29

hehe, now that is advertising :)

I guess it depends which site gets more individual users visiting and also whether the aim is to promote the book or increase comments. You have a wealth of talent in the comments here, could someone write a viral viseo that plugs the book?

  • RG05/08/2011 at 21:30

it's hard to split the text because we're doing the same thing on twitter: http://twitter.com/365F1Stories

The thing is, twitter is probably a far, far better place to advertise than the comments, because I imagine most of us on here have the books, or at the very least, have heard of them, so I wouldn't really see the point of advertising if I'm totally honest on the comments.

  • jackie05/08/2011 at 21:31

    video, I can't spell

I guess it depends which site gets more individual users visiting and also whether the aim is to promote the book or increase comments. You have a wealth of talent in the comments here, could someone write a viral viseo that plugs the book?

the question was whether we could leverage some of the effort that went into writing the teasers for twitter, into creating a discussion.

we can promote the book with videos and stuff later. this is just step 1 :)

  • Steven Roy05/08/2011 at 21:33
