Here we are again, horrible Thursday, but I won't let it get me down, and neither should you. There's plenty going on to distract from what day of the week it is, so let's get right down to the F1 stuff.

  • Old Schumacher is struggling with his neck, according to his spokeswoman. I think one of two things is going on here. Either he really is struggling and might not be able to come to Ferrari's rescue in their hour of need, or he is trying to make us think he won't do very well so that when he wins, it will "wow" us even more.
  • Donington Park have hired a new project manager for the upgrades to the circuit, and she has plenty of credentials such as the new Wembley and the Millenium Dome. Oh dear. Still, they can't really do any worse than they have already, what with planning issues, and financial delays.
  • And here is your prescribed reading for the day. RG has written a fab post about Piquet, Renault and Flav, and how the three things don't mix. Meanwhile Racecar Engineering have had a chat with the guy behind the Stefan Grand Prix effort, about their issues with the FIA.

That'll do it for now. Let me know how you're getting through your Thursday, and whether it is going well for you. It does happen sometimes! As ever, I'll see you in the comments.

So it seems, now that the kibosh has been handed out on Schuey's 2009 spec test, he may not be fit to race after all

Aren't we banned from talking about this? All I can say is that Ferrari's comment about Williams is completely unacceptable.

one wonders, if he doesn't drive, whether he ever intended to and the team were on the blag for some free development / feedback/ direction.

    Wouldn't surprise me

Is there still no in-season testing next year?

did not work if they were. not sure how much feedback you get with last years Ferrari with GP2 tyres

Silly Ferrari, should have just lent the F60 to Top Gear and 'The Stig' could have took it out for a run

  • Andy Taylor05/08/2009 at 23:24

MSC, Ben Collins wouldn't let him drive a Ferrari

following on from yesterday's suggestion that the newly discovered "free news feed" contained links to a non-existent site. i've loaded the contents into a friendfeed pane instead:

    I think I'm ready now.

    Looking now.

let me know when you find it, am also looking

  • Maverick05/08/2009 at 23:36

Are you implying that otherwise it might not be all true? How shocking

Well I've suddenly got doubts that Todt is even running for the presidency or that Schumacher actually has a neck, put it that way

  • Bassano Clapper05/08/2009 at 23:36

    I think I'm ready now.

    Come on in

    The water's lovely

  • Maverick05/08/2009 at 23:39

So Valencia has only sold around 35,000 tickets and they complain about Renault being banned?

Do Spanish motorsport fans wait until the last minute just in case of this eventuality occurring?

  • Steven Roy05/08/2009 at 23:39

I can still see my second answer at http://mediafuturechange.com/ even after a re-boot but no other answers.

  • Steven Roy05/08/2009 at 23:41

So Valencia has only sold around 35,000 tickets and they complain about Renault being banned?

Surely the lack of ticket sales is related to the fact that it is a soporific go kart track in a dock-side industrial estate.

  • Bassano Clapper05/08/2009 at 23:41

Do Spanish motorsport fans wait until the last minute just in case of this eventuality occurring?

Or because even they know they'll need more than caffeine and Red Bull to stay awake?

umm. 4pm(ish). don't worry though, we'll do an actual post next week when more things are in place.

How were Ferrari going to run a third car? Or is this breakaway series related?

  • Scott Woodwiss05/08/2009 at 23:45

we're not planning to do anything out of the ordinary, nor anything illegal.

simply, if a company wanted to request the services of a formula 1 news aggregator, we'd like them to have the choice of more than one. and the alternatives to be better in multiple ways.

  • Steven Roy05/08/2009 at 23:46

no. not at all. quite the opposite.

that's simply their to highlight the flaws in a competitors business plan (the fact that they give it away for free). and to emphasis what we'd do better (protect it!).

Just looking at this Race Car engineering thing that Me posted on twitter (and here earlier i think)

I read "Have you signed any technical staff?

Yes. At the moment we are only going to say that we are very pleased to secure services of Mike Coughlan. Other additions will be published later."

Mike Coughlan? Mike Coughland, now where do i recognise that name from....

    *googles*

    OH

  • me05/08/2009 at 23:50

i misread that comment. not at the price the gmm are currently pitching, no. and the plan is to come in even cheaper.

  • Scott Woodwiss05/08/2009 at 23:50

But if you haven't tried a restore in recovery mode then that may not be the case.

As I explained, according to iTunes when it detects the iPhone, it's already in Recovery Mode.

As I explained, according to iTunes when it detects the iPhone, it's already in Recovery Mode.

Did you switch it off and back on again as I suggested? Switch off completely, then hold home button down as you plug it back in to the computer. This will start the phone up in recovery mode. Worth a try.

  • Jon Waldock05/08/2009 at 23:52

    days.

Not in that way, no. When this attempt is done, I will try that. Didn't think I had to since iTunes was saying something along the lines of "iTunes has detected an iPhone in Recovery Mode that needs to be restored"

  • Andy Taylor05/08/2009 at 23:54

So essentially, this is a Windows Update-type scenario. Apple's own software update has broken my iPhone. Brilliant.

I decided to use the opportunity to coincide it with toilet breaks, in the hope they'd be done by the time I returned

I dubbed it: Going all html again

  • Scott Woodwiss05/08/2009 at 23:55

Did you switch it off and back on again as I suggested? Switch off completely, then hold home button down as you plug it back in to the computer. This will start the phone up in recovery mode. Worth a try.

Now it's just stuck on the Apple logo. Holding the power button does nothing.

That's interesting - it just flashed up a white screen for a split second, and has now gone to the screen telling me to plug into iTunes.

Best report it just in case.

  • Scott Woodwiss06/08/2009 at 00:18

That's not good news. I think you may need a replacement, but try on another machine first.

Only other machine is the one at work that has iTunes on it, but I don't think they'd let me.

I think I'll just take it into O2, say what's happened, and if they say "You'll need to send it away for repair", then I can come straight back with:

"No, I don't think so. Here's why - I work for your guy's repair centre, Anovo. I know exactly what you're going to do with this. You're going to send it off, my place will receive it a couple of days later and book it in, they'll look at it, software upgrade it and send it back here which will take another couple of days. Now to save me that inconvenience and also wasting everyone's time, what you can do is give me a replacement right here right now and save us from having to go through all that, OK?"

My mate had a similar situation with a Blackberry, said pretty much the same thing and after the manager came out, he got a replacement :P Worth a try.

  • Bassano Clapper06/08/2009 at 00:20

My mate had a similar situation with a Blackberry, said pretty much the same thing and after the manager came out, he got a replacement :P Worth a try.

    It is worth a try

Or they'll send it to Apple

Either way, you'll have progressed it further than today. Good luck. Let us know how it goes

  • Scott Woodwiss06/08/2009 at 00:20

Or they'll send it to Apple

Who will probably do exactly the same. Which again is a waste of time.

  • Andy Taylor06/08/2009 at 00:20

Only other machine is the one at work that has iTunes on it, but I don't think they'd let me.

Remember update/restore is independent of anything else, you can do the restore on any machine then sync with your data at home.

  • Bassano Clapper06/08/2009 at 00:21

Who will probably do exactly the same. Which again is a waste of time.

But if that doesn't work, they'll issue you a replacement

Remember update/restore is independent of anything else, you can do the restore on any machine then sync with your data at home.

Let me put it this way - I asked if I could update my iPhone to the new OS 3.0 at work when it came out in the evening and they said no.

    You asked ;)

  • Scott Woodwiss06/08/2009 at 00:22

    this interesting piece of marketing:

Lufthansa to pay if sun don't shine

    06-08-2009

The German airline Lufthansa is offering passengers compensation if their holiday in the sun is ruined by too much rain. The company offers 20 euros per rainy day on flights to dozens of destinations, including Barcelona, Istanbul, Johannesburg, Tel Aviv and Dubai. The maximum compensation is 200 euros or nearly US$300.

they should apply something similar to F1 - money back for boring race or something :-)

So Valencia has only sold around 35,000 tickets and they complain about Renault being banned?

    Do Spanish motorsport fans wait until the last minute just in case of this eventuality occurring? {Comment #49}

I believe that applies to the Spanish regarding all sports with the partial exception of football. If my Spanish teacher back in secondary school is correct, a lot of Spanish people are fairly spontaneous about deciding whether to watch sport. They might even be waiting to see if the weather will be good on the morning before venturing to the track.

  • Alianora La Canta06/08/2009 at 13:34

    Or because even they know they’ll need more than caffeine and Red Bull to stay awake? {Comment #55}

On the other hand, this may have rather more to do with it!

Another theory is that the way F1 has been covered in Spain, the casual Spanish F1 crowd think Alonso is F1. Therefore if Alonso isn't in the race, it can't be F1 (poor Jaime)...

I wondered if that was the case. I wasn't impressed by the claim that sales had shot up after the announcement that Schumacher was racing - the increase seemed minimal and in line with sales going up naturally as the event approached.

    Presumably going by the Ferrari statement the Italian definition is a bit different too. {Comment #190}

According to my dictionary, the Italians have two phrases for "fair play":

    - comportamento leale - roughly translates into "honest behaviour"

    - gioco leale - roughly translates into "sportsmanship".

Perhaps Ferrari decided the language needed a third versipn of "fair play"?

I think the doctor's point was that Massa was fluent in those three languages and no others, so if he could answer questions in those languages, then it indicated his brain was working as it had normally. If Felipe had managed to answer the questions in some of the languages he'd mastered and not others, that would indicate pretty clearly that there was a problem.

I don't think the doctor intended to imply that trilingualism was a prerequisite to a healthy brain...

heheh I will admit that I have seen some of the later episodes and they were alright, but I formed most of my opinion of the show around the first couple of episodes in S1 which were pretty much word-for-word copies, which I did not like. Too easy to make comparisons to something you already love, and that never works out well for the newbie.

Noooooooo!! Don't judge it by the first series :( It is an absolutely rubbish series!

Series 1 is bleh because they did do as you say, just did the UK one, and it was so awkward. The second series onwards is just original brilliance, nothing like the british one and just pure awesome. Every character gets their own idtentity, everyone gets their own story, and it's just miles beyond the 6 episodes in the first series. Definitely recommend watching them if you have a chance rather than the first one :)

I absolutely really dislike the first series though because they just pretty much remade british humour in an American environment, which never works.

Hello all, have just woken up again, off work sick today & have been sleeping intermittently. I have Windows Vista & I find I can only get LCLT to work on Safari but if I want to see a video (e.g. Alex on tractor) I have to go to IE & watch it from Sidepodcast there. Is it just me?

  • Jon Waldock06/08/2009 at 17:06

shall investigate and get back to you. Vista/IE used to work fine?

  • Janna06/08/2009 at 17:12

I've never been able to get LCLT to work from there although I have the latest version of IE. I've only been trying since about March. Safari is fine although I don't think it downloads very well, it keeps saying "localised string not found" on menus. It's just annoying having to go back to IE to see any videos, mind you it's really only me being lazy I suppose :-)

cheers jon. janna, can you drop.io a screenshot of the broken page pls?

  • Jon Waldock06/08/2009 at 17:36

Commenting works fine on it too

  • Janna06/08/2009 at 17:41

This is from IE: Have just tried again on IE and it seems to be working OK now, sorry to have been a bother, before it was opening the extra box but not showing any comments. Thanks for your help.

    nice one.

if you haven't checked in a while, i would guess the recent batch of updates fixed the issue. found some performance increase when using lclt on various browsers.

  • Janna06/08/2009 at 17:48

    Does doohickey work?

Interestingly, from this comment onwards, only the LCLT in Safari has updated all the comments. The one in IE has not updated at all & the doohickey just shows my response to Jon. I assume I'm confusing it by having all three open.

  • me06/08/2009 at 17:53

    Yes in all three

does it still say: "Status: Connected"

near the top? and what does "Last polled" say near the bottom left?

  • Janna06/08/2009 at 17:54

near the top? and what does "Last polled" say near the bottom left?

LCLT in IE says Connected and Last polled: Thu, 6 Aug 2009 17:53:42 UTC. Doohickey says Connected and Last polled: Thu, 6 Aug 2009 17:54:20 UTC.

A good manager always blames the officials. Top tip is get a good assistant manager, you could be on the sidelines a bit.

  • Pat W06/08/2009 at 18:11

I am currently running at about 10 slightly different pairs of tan shorts with large cargo pockets while I try and work out the ideal replacement.

I hope 'tan' is different to 'beige'. Because if they are beige there is something wrong. But tan seems ok.

Tis is true. The FA get too angsty on FM :(

  • Scott Woodwiss06/08/2009 at 18:14

All it took was to restore it at work on one of our computers. Now all I need to do is sync everything back on, then uninstall and re-install iTunes, then sync again so all my stuff gets copied onto iTunes again.

  • RG06/08/2009 at 18:15

Tis is true. The FA get too angsty on FM :(

Hmm, I've only seen any FA give out warnings or touchline bans. Blatent Frej fans.

    That plus:

    1) It's not an F2007, looks more like an F2001. Also a V10, not a V8

    2) That's Fiorano, not Mugello.

    FAIL.

  • RG06/08/2009 at 18:19

  • Pat W06/08/2009 at 18:23

btw, I got sent a bottle of red wine by work's electricity supplier! in my name! to say thanks for being a customer. i think they liked that we signed for 3 years on a fairly low rate...

and British Gas wonders what it does wrong

Does British Gas do that though? My guess is they think they're always right!

It might do. We've been with them for years and they never sent us anything.. BG 'support' are Abysmal on the scale of good to bad. At least this is an improvement, they used to be Horrific.

  • Jon Waldock06/08/2009 at 18:24

rtl were showing that footage on saturday, so i'm gonna say yes. scott?

i'm thinking due to the fact the Marlboro sponsors are lined out, it's probably right, but i'm not sure you can be 100% that far away

  • Scott Woodwiss06/08/2009 at 18:25

Yup, that's him alright. F2007 - check. Mugello - check. Red helmet lighter than the paintjob - check.

If you like. He is back this weekend though.

If you have anything for the show you can uplad it to http://drop.io/sidepodradio/ On;y Christine, Mr C and I can then access it so it will be fresh for people on the day.

  • Pat W06/08/2009 at 19:27

  • Scott Woodwiss06/08/2009 at 19:28

Why not? Won't it be out of date if you do it too soon?

Mmm, true. I want enough time to edit it though. I have contemplated doing it live, but for some reason I can forsee many problems with that knowing what I'm like with Skype :P

  • Scott Woodwiss06/08/2009 at 19:29

Also, why is there a video of Alex pretending to drive a stationary tractor? Has he officially gone mad?

  • Steven Roy06/08/2009 at 19:30

Also, why is there a video of Alex pretending to drive a stationary tractor? Has he officially gone mad?

He seems to be on a holday where he is looking at different mode of transport. Give him another couple of days and he will be wing walking or flying helicopters.

  • RG06/08/2009 at 19:31

Also, why is there a video of Alex pretending to drive a stationary tractor? Has he officially gone mad?

No. I have driven a moving tractor but not a stationary one.

Look, I was a kid. There are good excuses.

  • Steven Roy06/08/2009 at 19:36

im good thanks. Driving lesson was great fun today. Aparently all I need to do now is just learn bay parking, and then practice practice practice :) I may have accidently mounted a low bit of pavement when I got a little flustered at a quiet junction. First proper mistake though.. And he said it was alright.. Scared me witless though... :)

If the worst thing you ever do is mount a pavement you will be very lucky.

  • Steven Roy06/08/2009 at 19:37

I really enjoyed Sean's two 10 minute shows. I am looking forward to the real thing now. I have a feeling sidepodradio is going to be very good.

It's inevitable that you will do stuff like that and worse. The important thing is not to worry about it afterwards. A lot of people get into trouble because they make a small mistake and are so busy thinking about that and not what they are doing and end up making a bigger mistake. THink about it after the lesson but not while you are still driving.

It's just because it is the first time. Eventually you will do something like that and just mutter under your breath and forget it. Sounds like you have a really good instructor.

I don't know. About 30 to 40 pounds per hour? I'm a very good teacher for Zoe but at the rate she's going, she'll never get her Provisional licence (we call them p plates, or pees for short)

    Pleased to read LJ is down too, I was blaming my bad internet because I thought it a little odd that two big sites would go down at the same time. {Comment #425}

This is one of those times when I'm glad my blog is on an obscure server. Nobody is ever likely to attack it on the grounds of fame (though the server was taken down once by someone taking revenge, which spoils the theory a little...)

  • Andy Taylor06/08/2009 at 21:31

So, Scott, how did you fix your phone?

  • Alianora La Canta06/08/2009 at 21:32

That's annoying. I was just smiling because Twitter was working after the DoS attack... ...when the site doesn't let me log in because the site's taking too long to respond!

  • me06/08/2009 at 21:33

So, Scott, how did you fix your phone?

i think he said earlier. filter is your friend :)

    quick test

I would take the test but I can't see the question. :)

  • me06/08/2009 at 21:38

just a quick update. if you download the latest chrome beta, the noises in doohickey should be working, but aren't. the checkbox appears but nothing happens at the moment.

i should say the installer is brilliant though. it's not often i get excited by software installers, but chrome is seamless. windows installs usually involve:

    - next, next, next, next, ok

    - allow

    - ok, ok, finish

chrome just installed without making any fuss at all. 20 years of windows and google finally cracked it.

  • me06/08/2009 at 21:38

I would take the test but I can't see the question. :)

haha. chrome failed the test with flying colours. it's a beta, so it was sort of expected.

  • Alianora La Canta06/08/2009 at 21:39

    Haven’t we all gone to a farm and done that? {Comment #563}

I haven't - perhaps living on a farm reduces the need to pretend I do.

Can it be a co-incidence that Leo launched TWiG this week?

  • Scott Woodwiss06/08/2009 at 21:40

  • Scott Woodwiss06/08/2009 at 21:43

    great :)

    Basically how it went was:

    - Restored and updated iPhone at work

    - Synced it here at home to activate it

    - Restored it from a previous backup, which was last night

    - Put everything back onto it

    Simple :)

    - Restored and updated iPhone at work

    - Synced it here at home to activate it

    - Restored it from a previous backup, which was last night

    - Put everything back onto it
