The weekend is upon us, so it's time for you to let us know what you're up to. It's a non-race weekend, so I hope you're all doing something exciting. We want to know about it. Don't forget about the inaugural Sidepodfilmclub showing of Talladega Nights later, as well - more information here.

  • Making the most of the news regarding Renault's impending hearing in front of the WMSC, we posted quite a good looking F1 Big Picture, and the associated F1 Minute yesterday. The debate is raging in the comments over here on whether Piquet is smart/stupid/talented/useless enough to have pulled off such a feat.
  • We're posting guest articles from the hosts of Sidepodradio shows to promote their segments, and hopefully get a bit more interaction if some is required. If you are doing a show, please feel free to forward me a few words to publish on your behalf. Oh, and if you're a listener, make sure you keep your eye on the blog for ways to get involved.
  • Finally, a few days late, I read some interesting statistics on F1 Wolf's blog. He's rounded up some facts and figures to establish whether this latest record of six different race winners in as many races is as unusual as it seems. Short answer - it is. Long answer - read more here.

That'll do it for now. Another reminder for Sidepodfilmclub tonight, we'll be opening a thread in time for the film to start at 8pm UK time. I hope you can join us, but either way, I'll see you in the comments.

it's obvious: you switched days. it happens from time to time. just try to remember the number that came out in the lottery and you'll be rich...

Depends if you subscribe to the parallel universe theory.

    Is it on itunes?

Is an option on Sidepod Selector I believe

Depends if you subscribe to the parallel universe theory.

oh no, this is just a loop in time. everything should be the same. actually, it's probably because she didn't see the lottery that she could do it. otherwise she'll be able to predict the result, which she didn't in the first place... (is that clear? :P )

  • guille230604/09/2009 at 23:33

I review personal statements for a website in return for cold hard cash.

(Don't worry I don't do any of the writing for them, just identify areas they could improved etc. etc.)

I got a message back from someone who's statement I'd looked at telling me I was racist. I can't exactly work out how that conclusion was reached but seeing as he didn't pay for the service, I think he should have been more gracious.

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 00:20

It's too early in the day for arguments of the cricketing variety....

Apparently gmail pops up a message if you write a long email, in the evening, to ask if you really want to send this message. Wish Facebook could use this, I would not have to delete so much garbage the next day.

No, but far away bottles are a breeze, after a bit of practice.

I reckon a bit of practice will open that door. You might end up with dead arms though.

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 01:04

Can it defeat the mighty fridge door?

You just need a magnet on a stick for that. So long as the magnet is stronger than the magnet that seasl the door you can't lose.

Fridge seals are suction rather than magnetic mostly, aren't they?

I missed that bit of the live stream, but I assume Bassano Clapper owns an Orange Drill?

There has to be a vaccum seal surely, otherwise the cold air would get out!

if you like salad, then yes.

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 01:22

There has to be a vaccum seal surely, otherwise the cold air would get out!

There is a seal bu the magnet keeps it closed

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 01:22

The way the seal works has cushioning in it, so the colder air does pull the door towards the body of the fridge, but inside the seal is normally a strip magnet that does most of the closing.

  • Bassano Clapper05/09/2009 at 01:22

    How A Refrigerator Works

All refrigerator/freezer doors have a seal--a rubber-like gasket attached to the door. Usually white, almond, black, or brown, the seal's job is to keep the cool air inside the refrigerator and the room air out. The seal is lined with a magnet that runs its length and width. The magnet helps to hold the door closed and create a tight seal. The screws that hold the seal to the door also hold the door liner in and help to "square" the door. The hinges allow the door to swing open. Some hinges also assist the door in closing. For the door to close properly, the hinges must be correctly adjusted.

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 01:23

There is a seal bu the magnet keeps it closed

But surely as bassano said the lower air pressure in the fridge would create one anyway?

  • startledbunny05/09/2009 at 01:23

There has to be a vaccum seal surely, otherwise the cold air would get out!

Nah, the cold air is being constantly created by that big black compressor round the back. The magnets keep the door shut. I'll be asking my dad tomorrow now! I'll see if I can video it. You're probably not that bothered though are you?

  • me05/09/2009 at 01:24

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 01:25

. The magnet helps to hold the door closed and create a tight seal.

If it only helps then conceivably air pressure does the rest?

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 01:26

Yup, he lost any chance of a Renault Drive next year!

Hahahaha whaaat? He had a chance of a Renault drive?

  • Bassano Clapper05/09/2009 at 01:28

If it was insulated well enough.

Though the heat exchanger might get a little confused

  • Bassano Clapper05/09/2009 at 01:29

Could you use a fridge to keep food from freezing in very cold places?

Saying that, I think it can only lower the temperature

  • startledbunny05/09/2009 at 01:29

No no no, I'm going to get a taxi, bray on my parents' door, and ask him about the mechanics of a fridge door. Expect post watershed language though :)

  • Bassano Clapper05/09/2009 at 01:30

No no no, I'm going to get a taxi, bray on my parents' door, and ask him about the mechanics of a fridge door. Expect post watershed language though :)

    Qik it, for sure

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 01:30

Incidentaly my grandad built a fridge himself from parts before they were common place.

Apparently the whole street used to keep their meat in it!

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 01:30

But surely as bassano said the lower air pressure in the fridge would create one anyway?

That depends. If the fridge is cold and you open the door and take something out. The internal and external pressure would equalise even though the temperature wouldn't change much. So when you closed the door it wouldn't seal until the inside temperature dropped enough to create a pressure difference.

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 01:31

Which wouldn't happen if there wasn't a proper seal....

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 01:31

If you want to see the magnets working just close the door to the point where the magnets are close enough to react to the body of the fridge and you can see the seal move towards the fridge

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 01:31

Ah i realise the magnets close the door. but i expect the efficency of the seal improves as the vacuum is formed?

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 01:32

You mean you want me to ask him?

The most important issue on sidepodcast right now is how fridge doors seal. You should do a sidepodradio show on this

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 01:33

No no no, I'm going to get a taxi, bray on my parents' door, and ask him about the mechanics of a fridge door. Expect post watershed language though :)

  • startledbunny05/09/2009 at 01:34

Ah i realise the magnets close the door. but i expect the efficency of the seal improves as the vacuum is formed?

I guess so. the squishy bits behind the magnets force a small amount of air out if you put enough pressure on them. Thing is, I didn't take the city & guilds in refrigeration, but i know a man who did.

  • me05/09/2009 at 01:34

If you want to see the magnets working just close the door to the point where the magnets are close enough to react to the body of the fridge and you can see the seal move towards the fridge

    brb.

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 01:34

Which wouldn't happen if there wasn't a proper seal....

Exactly. You would need to hold it shut until the pressure difference built up

  • Bassano Clapper05/09/2009 at 01:34

When we have the answer from the frifge expert, can we have a break-out post please

In the meantime, I bid you farewell

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 01:35

Ah i realise the magnets close the door. but i expect the efficency of the seal improves as the vacuum is formed?

If you open the fridge and take something out though the pressures equalise. YOu are never then going to create a significan pressure difference again

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 01:35

When we have the answer from the frifge expert, can we have a break-out post please

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 01:36

    What have I done.......??

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 01:36

I guess so. the squishy bits behind the magnets force a small amount of air out if you put enough pressure on them. Thing is, I didn't take the city & guilds in refrigeration, but i know a man who did.

But once the magnets contact the seal is formed so you can't force air out

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 01:36

    Night Bassano

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 01:37

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

You have to love the dolphins. They are just so polite

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 01:37

I think the squishiness is too allow the door to move in towards the fridge as the pressure inside drops and to ensure a complete seal

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 01:37

But once the magnets contact the seal is formed so you can't force air out

But do the magnets run to the extreme corners?

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 01:37

You realise anyone reading back through this in the morning is going to think we are all mental.

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 01:38

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 01:38

I think the squishiness is too allow the door to move in towards the fridge as the pressure inside drops and to ensure a complete seal

Exactly. If there was no squishyness the seal would not be as good and if the pressure difference built up you could never open the fridge again

  • startledbunny05/09/2009 at 01:38

Can you live stream the video of that

As much as I would love to, I don't think my Dad would agree. If I can, I will.

i can't see any magnets moving. i did find more wine though.

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 01:40

But do the magnets run to the extreme corners?

You need to do a magnet test to find that out. They shouldn't need to do that to work efficiently. So long as the seal material does and the magnets can hold the weight of the door closed that should be enough.

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 01:40

i can't see any magnets moving. i did find more wine though.

    Drink it and look again!

    1) is there a vacuum in the fridge?

    2) would things be kept warm inside there if outside were freezing conditions?

    3) is your son a mental?

Do you really want to know this?

  • me05/09/2009 at 01:51

Do you really want to know this?

    yup.

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 01:51

Do you really want to know this?

    We need information.

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 01:51

We're not suggesting that there's some kind of vacuum pump inside the fridge. Just that low pressure naturally develops inside holding the door shut tightly.

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 01:52

Point 1 is not so much is there a vacuum, but does the difference in air temperatures and therefore pressures help keep the door closed?

  • startledbunny05/09/2009 at 01:54

    Morning all!

Off to see some local motorsport at Wiscombe Hill Climb and cheer my friend Steve along!

Its a great event, and hill climbing is a genuinely exciting and interesting branch of motorsport, if you have an event near you give it a go!

Hey scott, got any pics of the Forza Liveries that you were talking about the other day?

  • Scott Woodwiss05/09/2009 at 10:29

Re-post of what I just did in the wrong thread:

Morning all. Just seen on Forzacentral.com a few screen grabs of some of the in-game menus in FM3 and there is one track which is literally huge. Seriously it's just looks like a huge tangle of roads :D

Also, the livery system lets you create your own vinyls and decals using a 1,000 square grid. I got a glimpse of some which someone had made in a video and I'm seriously impressed with how detailed you can make them! There's also a colour blender in there as well which lets you edit hue, saturation and brightness of colours. Brawn luminous yellow anyone?

    October 23rd can't come soon enough :(

  • Scott Woodwiss05/09/2009 at 10:29

Hey scott, got any pics of the Forza Liveries that you were talking about the other day?

I can get some for you if you wish :P

  • Scott Woodwiss05/09/2009 at 10:32

Also, EVERY SINGLE CAR in the game is paintable. Yes, even the race cars. There's a Dodge Charger and Ford Fusion stock car in the game and both are plain and unpainted. Same goes for the Audi A4 and Merc C-Klasse DTM cars. V8 Supercars are in too! :D

    How did it become Saturday? {Comment #2}

It's Saturday? I suppose it has to be, seeing as I went into town for a library trip, which was extended to include handing in the CV and covering letter I wrote yesterday and picking up this week's Autosport...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/09/2009 at 10:43

Question about Ross Brawn - where was he caught speeding and what was the limit there?

but of course. It appears the easiest way is to stay in Milan and get the train to the track :D

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/09/2009 at 10:58

Here's a link to an interview with Ross Brawn from Mobil1 The Grid

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 11:05

I don't want to have to sleep on the street :(

hehe, dont worry as long as you have a lonely planet or rough guide book with you will nearly always find a place in there to stay, or at the very least a place in there can recommenced somewhere you can go.

  • Amy05/09/2009 at 11:05

I once swore I'd never sleep in a hostel again but I may have to rethink this pledge, for budgetary reasons :(

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 11:07

The tourist board are usually really helpful. The only time that's not worked out so well was when I turned up in Paris with nowhere to stay at some holiday weekend and every hotel was full. I mean EVERY hotel from rat infested hovel to 5* luxury. Not a room.....

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 11:08

That said, I wouldn't advise maybe trying to find somewhere in Monza at race weekend either.

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 11:08

They arent that bad, the first time i went travelling with my girlfriend i hated them, but after going round Aus alone i absolutely loved it.

You dont have to stay in a dorm, most hostels offer rooms, but it is really good to meet people

Amy... I don't know if you're planning on stopping in London but Katherine said it would be fine if you stayed with us if that helps at all!

  • Amy05/09/2009 at 11:10

You dont have to stay in a dorm, most hostels offer rooms, but it is really good to meet people

I think is was the 7 weeks in one when I arrived in Melbourne that put me off. I met some really great people, true, but I was pining for my own space. I especially hate communal kitchens.

The week in Singapore was doable, but I was still wishing I'd picked a single room.

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 11:12

You stayed in a hostel when you moved to Melbourne? Where did you put all your stuff?

  • Amy05/09/2009 at 11:12

Amy... I don't know if you're planning on stopping in London but Katherine said it would be fine if you stayed with us if that helps at all!

ooh sidepodhospitality! I am planning to spend a few days in London before the Great Spa Trip because theres quite a chunk of people I went to school with living there and it'd be nice if I could catch up with some. My mother tells me my cousin is there as well so no doubt my mum and aunty will be concocting some sort of meeting as we speak :D

  • Amy05/09/2009 at 11:13

You stayed in a hostel when you moved to Melbourne? Where did you put all your stuff?

I arrived with a 20kg suitcase containing all of my clothes and a few other necessities. I took my PS3 as my carry on luggage :D After a couple of weeks I had to buy another suitcase because I kept buying stuff. Then once I found my flat my parents sent over my other stuff that I had managed to fit into 4 boxes.

As I look around at the amount of stuff I now own, I realise if I ever move countries again, there is no way I can do it in 4 boxes and 2 suitcases :D

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 11:14

The kitchens are evil! I ended up eating at the backpacker pubs and subway which wasnt too pricey. But if you are moving around a lot, it shouldnt be too bad as you get new people every night.

I love the word pining... Where is my Fjord! :P

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 11:15

    There's F1 here!

Plus the wages in Australia are a lot better than NZ for doing the same job and the cost of living isn't that much higher. It's very very common for young Kiwis to move over, although admittedly most of them come with friends. I wasn't going to let the fact that none of my friends wanted to move stop me :D

The list of bands and things that I have lined up to see, plus the other great sporty things like 'seeing Roger Federer play tennis' are pretty cool too.

I was planning on moving to Wellington for a few years and then coming over but I figured, hey, why move twice?

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 11:23

That is terrifying! Having just moved, I couldn't even fit all my possessions in 2 cars. I'd never get them all on a plane! I'd need to force my sister to have a room full of stuff that I could move over gradually. I couldn't bear to sell it all!

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 11:25

Apparently I left more behind than I realised, because when my parents moved house they complained a lot :D I haven't missed any of it in the last 18 months but when I go home in October no doubt I'll bring some more stuff back with me :)

I wish I could inspire me! It took me 21 days to find my job, but because its kind of lame and low-paying my plan was to have it temporarily while I looked for something more relevant to my degree. I have now been in my job for 15 months, have only applied for one other job in that time, and my degree is coming up to two years old and never used. Oops.

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 11:29

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 11:32

You have inspired me to put more impetus on my job hunt!

Oops.

I started like that too. Don't worry, the experience will help with the next job :)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/09/2009 at 11:37

Are you looking to move or are you unemployed atm?

I am technically 'living by my own means' which means i am making enough money to not be considered unemployed, but i dont have a job

Do I want to ask how you are doing that or will you perjure yourself by doing so? ;)

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 11:38

I have no idea what I want to do long-term. I'm doing a medical degree but I'm pretty sure I don't want to be a doctor.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/09/2009 at 11:38

Here is a video by FHM via CAR Magazine where they see if a Tesla roadster can make a circuit of the M25 on one charge. Very interesting - I won't spoil it for you!

Ahh I like hearing stories like that because all I hear from my family is how I've wasted my degree and will never get a job so I might as well go back to uni and start again :(

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 11:39

Do I want to ask how you are doing that or will you perjure yourself by doing so? ;)

I play around on the markets for a couple of hours most days, its not making me a fortune but it keeps me going.

I also do little odd jobs for people as well. summarising reports mostly

You could do a law conversion and make a fortune as a medical malpractice lawyer...

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 11:42

    Right..... :P

Well I wanted to be a doctor when I started. I've got 3 years of it done. I had to take a year out for financial reasons then I got ill and was advised to take another year just to get it together. In my hiatus, I've managed to find many things I enjoy doing a lot more. Many of them not grad jobs at all but meh

My first job was an admin assistant - very low-rent and low paid but a decent company, good connections and lots learned. I moved to Denmark and that helped me get a foot in the door in a company that works in the same industry and uses all my Maths and Stats superpowers ;) Oh, and the lifestyle is good too!

I cant really afford to, and it gets a bit lonely!

I would much rather be ain a proper 9-5 job where i can talk to people and stir up the office politics ;)

  • Amy05/09/2009 at 11:43

Oh man! I work with people like that. They give themselves stupid rotas then whine about their hours. It's like you wrote it!

I'm not saying you can give all the unpleasant shifts out to other people, they'll never respect you if you're not prepared to do it. Similarly, there's no need to do them all!

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 12:05

No no no. I like getting my work out the way early in the day. Maybe that's just because of the sorts of work I'm doing at the moment though. The end of day shifts are hardest work because you have to close everything down and it involves basically just staying until the work is done :(

its funny because I say that, but when given the choice I always chose the 7.30-3.30 shift at work when I get the option because although getting up kills me, I like finishing early :D

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)05/09/2009 at 12:07

    No joy with the job hunting yet? {Comment #311}

This is the first vacancy that's come up since June that I've actually met the criteria for and could do as a job. Things are looking up.

I wouldn't describe it as "joy", but the hope level is high :)

  • Alianora La Canta05/09/2009 at 12:09

    Hehehe still going to Monza?

    but of course. It appears the easiest way is to stay in Milan and get the train to the track :D {Comment #314}

Amy, you do know I envy you a lot? Hope you are having and will continue to have an amazing time in Italy!

  • Alianora La Canta05/09/2009 at 12:21

    That is not in my nature! I heart my to-do lists! {Comment #317}

So do I. When I went with Dad to Silverstone, we ended up with four lists of stuff to take on the Silverstone trip and a meticulously-planned itinerary of everything up to and including when Dad and I were showering. We even came close to managing everything on the list (missed out on looking at the outside of the Brawn factory though because we were too busy relaxing in the tent at the time we were due to look at it).

So far i have been looking for a job on and off for about 327 days… not that i have been counting!

    I am determined to have one by the end of the month. {Comment #349}

I've been looking for a job ever since I left university, apart from about six weeks at the start of the job I had last year. It's not great.

  • Alianora La Canta05/09/2009 at 12:32

    I have no idea what I want to do long-term. I’m doing a medical degree but I’m pretty sure I don’t want to be a doctor. {Comment #359}

That degree will prepare you for pretty much anywhere that requires you to think about complex consequences and/or sort stuff out quickly and correctly and/or involves caring about people. So you'll be good at lots of jobs with only minimal/no extra training. At least you will have plenty of time to make the next move. Good luck in finding the right path for you.

these ones are a serious weed in NZ but I loooove them. My grandparents neighbours used to give us supermarket bags of them every couple of weeks and my dad and I would sit there and eat 30 or 40 in a row. They finally got control of their garden and the passionfruit stopped coming :(

It's one of the things I miss the most about home!

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 16:41

OK, being a vine and me without something to grow a vine on, I am stuck. They also take 18 months to produce their first fruit and I am a product of the 'I want it now' society.

pretty much yes. We have that weird problem with the field size on the bcp I think it's doing an implicit conversion somewhere along the line. The old database was clearly more lenient.

But we've patched it up so it shouldn't be a problem.

on this app the movement of the pointers isn't quite as fluid as you'd hope I mean it's good but my guess is that apple will want everyone to use their api for the overlay.

    #sidepodspace update

The third and final spacewalk of the curent shuttle mission just started on NASA TV. The job list for this spacewalk is below.

The two will deploy a payload attachment system on the starboard truss. They will have a special tool with them in the event they encounter any problems with a detent pin that caused problems on similar tasks in previous missions.

Next they will replace a failed rate gyro assembly, which measures rates for any changes in the station’s attitude, with a new one.

With that complete, the two will split up for the next tasks. Olivas will install a Global Positioning System antenna while Fuglesang will remove and replace a remote power control module and install a insulation sleeve on a cable inside the truss. Fuglesang will follow that up with the installation of a second GPS antenna.

The two will reunite for the final task, routing two 60-foot-long avionics systems cables along the station. The cables are being installed in preparation for the arrival of the Node 3 “Tranquility” in 2010.

jenson says he's real. what more do you want?

Picture of him drinking a little cup of tea next to twitter

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 21:14

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 21:14

"Kers? We dont need Kers! We can do it by ourself!"

No, i think that's in reply to

@real_Vettel You know your ****!! How you doing man? Wishing you had Kers for Monza!?

  • Amy05/09/2009 at 21:14

"Kers? We dont need Kers! We can do it by ourself!"

I took that more as an answer to "Wishing you had Kers for Monza!?" but then again I don't have the timeline straight, all I can see is 'about an hour ago'

  • lou05/09/2009 at 21:15

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 21:19

Ooooh now I'm so torn. Do I have to actually join Twitter to stalk effectively?

Journeyer seems to manage to stalk people on Twitter without actually having an account :-)

  • Amy05/09/2009 at 21:19

That was sent at 20:43, vettel responded with "Kers? We dont need Kers! We can do it by ourself!" at 20:46

I shall remain sceptical then, its my natural response ;)

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 21:20

The other alternative is to get a baby fridge that holds a couple of bottles and sit it beside you

I want one! Despite my real fridge being six paces away!

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 21:20

Is there something about this time of night that makes people want to talk about their fridge?

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 21:20

Ooooh now I'm so torn. Do I have to actually join Twitter to stalk effectively?

Not when Mr C can produce stalking tools so quickly. You only need to sign up if you want to talk to them

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 21:21

Don't start with fridges again. Did we get a live stream from startled bunny on the fridge answers?

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 21:21

Is there something about this time of night that makes people want to talk about their fridge?

I'm just catching up on the thread. I wasn't here last night

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 21:22

Not when Mr C can produce stalking tools so quickly. You only need to sign up if you want to talk to them

Oooh do you think he would reply. I might actually be in love then. He looks like he just wants to talk to F1 drivers....

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 21:23

I'm just catching up on the thread. I wasn't here last night

We had a long long discussion on the pressure differential outside and inside a fridge and whether or not magnets were necessary

  • me05/09/2009 at 21:23

how do we know who wrote what?

yeah, it's annoying. you have to rollover the "twitter" text and read the status bar.

am working on a better system!

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 21:23

Oooh do you think he would reply. I might actually be in love then. He looks like he just wants to talk to F1 drivers....

He is only starting out. He probably doesn't know there are stalkers like you around.

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 21:24

    Wine

  • lou05/09/2009 at 21:24

you know the grosjean twitter account.. is it real? he doesn't appear to be following any f1 drivers... on the plus side he is following Mr C :)

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 21:24

He is only starting out. He probably doesn't know there are stalkers like you around.

I think he'd be more likely to reply while he's young and naive....

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 21:25

    ah it getcha!

    so yes.

    why's he following us?

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 21:26

We had a long long discussion on the pressure differential outside and inside a fridge and whether or not magnets were necessary

    So I can see

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 21:26

when i read the comments earlier i went to go and check our fridge.. mum gave me such a strange look.

Why? Mr C went and checked his fridge last night and he was not alone. He was alone with his fridge but not the lone fridge checker. I was shocked by how many people had never played with their fridges to see how it sealed. That is just one of those things that I had to know the first time I was aware if a fridge

  • me05/09/2009 at 21:26

not content with rewriting Wordpress, you are now rewriting Friendfeed?

building on top of friendfeed would be a better way of explaining it ;()

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 21:26

Do I want more beer or do I want wine?

    Wine

    Thanks. I think you're right.

Are you sure he wasn't trying to see if the light really goes out when you shut the door?

  • lou05/09/2009 at 21:27

rf1pp says he's real, and i believe everything he/she says.

    awesome :D

    why's he following us?

maybe he is a fan :D

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 21:27

    Who is rf1pp?

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 21:27

    why's he following us?

Does RG really live in the north east?

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 21:27

I think he'd be more likely to reply while he's young and naive....

He might think you are just being friendly until he knows better. You should sign up for an account then tweet him to say that you only signed up because someone told you he had.

About 1/3rd of a bottle in this glass which used to be a big bottle of Grolsch.

I have spent all evening editing and posting a 9 minute podcast, and it is still rubbish!

I don't know how you guys do it! I have realised how much of your time it must take up!

  • Christine05/09/2009 at 21:48

I have spent all evening editing and posting a 9 minute podcast, and it is still rubbish!

It does take a bit longer than blogging. :)

Why do you think yours is rubbish? I'm sure it isn't. Anything we can do to help?

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 21:48

Hi Neil. I was just about to reply to your post earlier about Wiscombe Park hillclimb. I've never made it along to that, I should do really.

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 21:50

btw I was in Exeter last night to see a film. flying visit.

  • Neil Denham05/09/2009 at 21:50

  • Neil Denham05/09/2009 at 21:51

What film did you see Pat?

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 21:52

What film did you see Pat?

District 9 in the Vue cinema (which is extortionate: £7.50???). Was a really good film though, enjoyed it lots.

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 21:52

FWI, I am disappointed in this wine.

  • Neil Denham05/09/2009 at 21:54

The Vue is a rip off! Did you take out a mortgage for refreshments? We are more into the Picturehouse, partly because we live near it, partly because it is cheaper, and partly because we like the arty/indie films they show!

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 21:54

    Has anyone seen red dawn?

    Is it worth watching?

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 21:57

The Vue is a rip off! Did you take out a mortgage for refreshments? We are more into the Picturehouse, partly because we live near it, partly because it is cheaper, and partly because we like the arty/indie films they show!

Thankfully we were running late so only had time to get the ticket and go straight in! But yeah, I've seen the price of refreshments before... For some reason we go there instead of the Odeon which is a little cheaper. Sometimes to the Cineworld in Yeovil when the guys we hook up with can be bothered to drive over this way.. Not that we go often.

I'm not sure I know where the Picturehouse is?

  • Neil Denham05/09/2009 at 21:57

Thanks! I have my friends tearing it apart on my blog, then I will see what needs changing on the next one. I realise if I do it often i need to pay for proper hosting, and work out what itunes is all about (I know, I am technologically behind!)

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 21:58

Hehehe as an ex Vue employee, I can readily assure you that they don't use their exorbitant fees to pay their staff a reasonable wage or let them take sensible breaks.... Or give them more than one shirt. Which when you think about it is pretty gross if you work a 5 day week.

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 21:58

    Has anyone seen red dawn?

Not heard of it before, but that's not unusual as I have no clue what is out at any given time.

Yup. I've frequently been there until 3.30am... You don't get extra money for that.

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 22:11

Bizarely Loeb has been talking to USF1

There are also reports he is free to race in Abu Dhabi, but i have been unable to reliably source those quotes

Yup. I've frequently been there until 3.30am... You don't get extra money for that.

What?? Surely that deserves night rates... what time did you start?

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 22:14

There are also reports he is free to race in Abu Dhabi, but i have been unable to reliably source those quotes

He and Citroen are supposed to have a deal with STR that he can race in F1 as soon as he clicnches the championship or after the last WRC rally of the year which would mean only Abu Dhabi. Citroen are quite happy for him to play at being an F1 driver to the end of the season and will not sign another driver until he decides whether he wants to rally or switch to F1.

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 22:15

What?? Surely that deserves night rates... what time did you start?

It depends, I think the late night shifts were 7.30-2.30 but you hardly ever got the place clean on time. Not if there were actually people in the last screening! It's been a couple years since I worked there though, I couldn't be certain on that. I know I only got scummy minimum wage for the privilege though :(

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 22:17

I have to say the NASA TV feed is fabulous tonight. The quality of the pictures is incredible

You didn't have to sneak! Well I guess you did if you were supposed to be working.

Depends what you're there for. The place is very inter-bred. People can't work there for more than about a month without getting with another member of staff.

also, look out for helicopters falling from the roof (just saying).

Erm quick question, if I send a direct message to someone on Twitter, are the contents broadcast to everyone I know....?

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 22:35

Erm quick question, if I send a direct message to someone on Twitter, are the contents broadcast to everyone I know....?

Only they will see it - but they need to follow you to send one back.

  • Andy Taylor05/09/2009 at 22:35

Erm quick question, if I send a direct message to someone on Twitter, are the contents broadcast to everyone I know....?

No. Replying to someone will be seen by anyone else who is also following that person, but a direct message is private.

Only they will see it - but they need to follow you to send one back.

  • Janna05/09/2009 at 22:48

Alison, am now following you. One thing you may want to do is to protect your tweets (which is in Settings). This means not everyone can see your tweets, only those following you, and you have to confirm if someone asks to follow you. I've only been on Twitter a short while & I've found this a good thing to have.

  • Amy05/09/2009 at 22:48

    woooooooooooo vamos nando!

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 22:51

Alison, am now following you. One thing you may want to do is to protect your tweets (which is in Settings). This means not everyone can see your tweets, only those following you, and you have to confirm if someone asks to follow you. I've only been on Twitter a short while & I've found this a good thing to have.

I was considering this on my personal one.

Alison, are you gonna tell us your twitter name?

  • lou05/09/2009 at 22:52

nope, the tennis got gooooood. Twas a 5 setter!

but... how have you not collapsed with tiredness?...

  • me05/09/2009 at 22:52

I was considering this on my personal one.

Alison, are you gonna tell us your twitter name?

doing that cuts me and my scheming plans out. but i can understand why you'd want to.

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 22:52

I was considering this on my personal one.

Alison, are you gonna tell us your twitter name?

In case anyone doesn't know... operating 2 accounts is more difficult than it seems. I'm sure I've got my SPC follows wrong.

  • Amy05/09/2009 at 22:53

but... how have you not collapsed with tiredness?...

Im good at all nighters, I do them a lot. Plus I woke up at 3.30 yesterday so I've only been awake 17 hours

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 22:54

doing that cuts me and my scheming plans out. but i can understand why you'd want to.

Partly because my personal one isn't for spammers. I can understand them doing it to my bloggy one, my 'me' one isn't for them.. and it may contain swears etc which people might not like..

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 22:54

    Nando? twitter.com/NanoAlonso

  • lou05/09/2009 at 22:54

Im good at all nighters, I do them a lot. Plus I woke up at 3.30 yesterday so I've only been awake 17 hours

ahhh okay. i've stayed up for like 36 hours before when i've been working, but i always tend to get very cold and start to feel ill if i am awake much more than that....

  • me05/09/2009 at 22:55

    Nando? twitter.com/NanoAlonso

just looking at that. not convinced yet.

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 22:55

You doing anything with the day?

Suggestion... run down Batman street going "nanananana nanananana nanananana..."

  • Andy Taylor05/09/2009 at 22:56

In case anyone doesn't know... operating 2 accounts is more difficult than it seems. I'm sure I've got my SPC follows wrong.

You need a client instead of the web page. That way you can manage multiple accounts.

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 22:56

You need a client instead of the web page. That way you can manage multiple accounts.

    I'm running Tweetdeck

  • Amy05/09/2009 at 22:57

You doing anything with the day?

It's my week to clean so I'll be vacuuming and wiping and mopping, and maybe making the muffins I never got around to doing yesterday.

Suggestion... run down Batman street going "nanananana nanananana nanananana..."

Pssh I'm soo not leaving the house. I'd be lucky to get dressed.

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 22:58

Im good at all nighters, I do them a lot. Plus I woke up at 3.30 yesterday so I've only been awake 17 hours

Sounds like a Friday to me. 17 hours is the time between getting up for work (8am) and dropping to bed (2am). Admittedly you probably haven't been to work on a Sat so haven't had that drain..

  • lou05/09/2009 at 22:58

erm... Jessica Mitchibata has set up a twitter account for her cat.... i'm not sure what to think of that tbh... :s

I just tried to stalk, I mean follow you and got a message saying you have to approve me so that part works

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 23:04

I set it to private now but I'm not sure I like this solution. Can people still send you messages without adding you if it's private.

They can still send you normal @messages yes, but they won't be replies to what you've said because they probably can't see it unless they are an evil overlord.

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 23:06

I followed from personal a/c and got no message

    Jumping to new daily...

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 23:06

I took it away. It creeped me out....

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 23:07

I followed from personal a/c and got no message

I meant instead of just clicking follow there was a box saying that I had to be approved

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 23:07

I took it away. It creeped me out....

    how so?

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 23:08

    how so?

I don't know, it didn't seem very welcoming to potential twitter friends.... I might put it on again after I've worked out how the thingy works.

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 23:08

I took it away. It creeped me out....

Just think of it as a way to txt the world.

You dont need to say anything personal or worth hearing about, but its usefull to just say random things and send messages to people that you know online

  • Janna05/09/2009 at 23:08

I took it away. It creeped me out....

That's OK but remember to check up on who's following you as I found I got a lot of spammers who weren't either my friends or F1 related. I wasn't happy with them seeing what I was saying.

  • me05/09/2009 at 23:08

I took it away. It creeped me out....

i'm totally lost by the need to protect tweets. how is it any less public than commenting here?

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 23:09

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 23:10

i'm totally lost by the need to protect tweets. how is it any less public than commenting here?

Yeah it's not. Although a list of everything I say does worry me to a certain extent... Similarly stalker ex-bfs are a lot more likely to find me on twitter than on here....

  • Alison05/09/2009 at 23:12

Yeah it's not. Although a list of everything I say does worry me to a certain extent... Similarly stalker ex-bfs are a lot more likely to find me on twitter than on here....

I also already had to remove a couple of people that looked a lot like online hookers....

  • Amy05/09/2009 at 23:12

i'm totally lost by the need to protect tweets. how is it any less public than commenting here?

I don't get it either, the spammers don't bother me because I doubt they actually look at their tweet page with their 900 people they are following. Until they start @ing me, which has never happened, I'll just let them stay there.

  • me05/09/2009 at 23:13

Yeah it's not. Although a list of everything I say does worry me to a certain extent... Similarly stalker ex-bfs are a lot more likely to find me on twitter than on here....

    fait point.

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 23:13

    Just saw this tweeted.

Attention it contains a cute baby animal and a certain person may want one.

  • Janna05/09/2009 at 23:14

i'm totally lost by the need to protect tweets. how is it any less public than commenting here?

It's not as anyone can see what's written here. I think the difference was that I could see who was reading my tweets and some were half naked women talking about their web sites that I would never want anyone to see. I was also unhappy that any of my friends or family would look at who was following me & see some of these things.

  • me05/09/2009 at 23:16

I was also unhappy that any of my friends or family would look at who was following me & see some of these things.

    interesting. hadn't thought of that.

You dont need to use your real name, and you could use an anonymous email address like 5 minute mail

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 23:17

Every now and then you have to trawl through your followers and block some.

  • me05/09/2009 at 23:18

Every now and then you have to trawl through your followers and block some.

    you do? oh.

    why?

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 23:20

Every now and then you have to trawl through your followers and block some.

    you do? oh.

    why?

I mean the half naked people. I don't want those associated with my account so I block them.

  • me05/09/2009 at 23:20

I mean the half naked people. I don't want those associated with my account so I block them.

not sure i've ever looked. maybe i should.

  • Janna05/09/2009 at 23:21

    you do? oh.

    why?

Same reason as I gave for protecting. One way is to protect & block as people try to follow as I do, the other is to let everyone see what you are saying but go through your followers and block the ones you don't want

  • Amy05/09/2009 at 23:21

I mean the half naked people. I don't want those associated with my account so I block them.

suddenly I feel like the only person who doesn't care about them. I never look at my followers list.

  • me05/09/2009 at 23:21

suddenly I feel like the only person who doesn't care about them. I never look at my followers list.

i turned off emails alerts about two years ago. never pay any attention any more.

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 23:22

I dont either.... If any of them are that interested in f1 and cricket and us talk shows then i am very impressed!

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 23:22

suddenly I feel like the only person who doesn't care about them. I never look at my followers list.

I was tempted to block anyone describing themselves as 'marketers' because I thought they might be harvesting my tweets for their own uses. But then I thought actually maybe they just like racing stuff.

  • me05/09/2009 at 23:23

Same reason as I gave for protecting. One way is to protect & block as people try to follow as I do, the other is to let everyone see what you are saying but go through your followers and block the ones you don't want

but i don't mind who follows me. i care who i follow and who i don't follow. but that's about all.

I was tempted to block anyone describing themselves as 'marketers' because I thought they might be harvesting my tweets for their own uses. But then I thought actually maybe they just like racing stuff.

there's absolutely no value in anything i say on twitter :)

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 23:23

suddenly I feel like the only person who doesn't care about them. I never look at my followers list.

I am not greatly bothered. I look occasionally and block the porn spammers but beyond that the only thing I do is see if I can find someone who is following me who would be interesting to follow.

  • Amy05/09/2009 at 23:23

i turned off emails alerts about two years ago. never pay any attention any more.

Me too, I've about reached my limit of people I want to follow too. I only use mine for F1 stuff, the only "personal" twitters I follow are SPC folk. Theres plenty of other F1 fans who follow me that I have no interest in following back because they tweet about their lives, which is not what I use twitter for.

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 23:24

but i don't mind who follows me. i care who i follow and who i don't follow. but that's about all.

I don't care who follows my personal a/c. I get touchy with my blog one because I'm trying to turn that into something.

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 23:27

You might miss out on things like awesome cake jokes though... :P

I generally dont look at hash tags or do searches unless something i specificity want to know is happening, so my following habits are pretty much limited to names other people tweet, or what i hear about here

  • Janna05/09/2009 at 23:28

there's absolutely no value in anything i say on twitter :)

I think that could be said about 99.9% of the whole of twitter ;-)

hehe. just looked at the follow total. i'm not trawling through that list and picking people off!

I generally dont look at hash tags or do searches unless something i specificity want to know is happening, so my following habits are pretty much limited to names other people tweet, or what i hear about here

I very rarely do any searches. I'm all about the 'word of mouth'.

  • Amy05/09/2009 at 23:31

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 23:32

I found quite a few f1 people going through who 5livef1 follow

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 23:33

I bet he listens to the show...

Its quite likely he dips into the comments and lurks as well :D

    Hi RG 2.0!

    In case anyone missed it...

A cake... (shamelessly stolen from jimmy fallon) Somehow he manages to tell jokes so badly he is actually funny.

  • Amy05/09/2009 at 23:34

pssh if I was a driver I'd totally be the 'google myself' type so no doubt I'd listen to you guys to find out what 'the fans' are saying.

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 23:36

am assuming he hit the follow link by mistake.

I dont... think about it a few weeks ago he was probably following f1 like we all do. Sure he was in GP2 and on PK's shoulder... but i expect he has an ipod and it really wouldn't surprise me if he was a listener.

  • Amy05/09/2009 at 23:36

have they had the reunion? I am a sporadic viewer...

I don't think they did it on the show but they did a photo shoot for People magazine that I commented the other day. Screech didn't show up :(

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 23:39

It makes me wonder... are there people in the paddock who are listeners? and how much did Joe's appearance contribute to that?

  • me05/09/2009 at 23:39

but i expect he has an ipod and it really wouldn't surprise me if he was a listener.

sorry, my brain can't deal with that.

What I've discovered from IndyCar is that people in the paddock there are aware of bloggers like Pressdog and MyNameIsIRL (love that name), and podcasters. I know F1 has this reputation of being so far removed.. but are they??

  • Nick05/09/2009 at 23:41

sorry, my brain can't deal with that.

..You better stop reading then :P

I wouldnt be suprised if there werent at least 7-8 drivers who listened.

They have to do a lot of travelling and repetitive workouts... when better to listen to a podcast or 2?

  • me05/09/2009 at 23:42

It makes me wonder... are there people in the paddock who are listeners? and how much did Joe's appearance contribute to that?

don't know. we know a couple of teams have listened in the past. red bull and a few others. i doubt they'd be regular listeners.

someone said that tremayning was being discussed at williams hq a while back. i suspect that's about all though. why would anyone inside the paddock listen to people who knew less than they did?

  • Amy05/09/2009 at 23:42

What I've discovered from IndyCar is that people in the paddock there are aware of bloggers like Pressdog and MyNameIsIRL (love that name), and podcasters. I know F1 has this reputation of being so far removed.. but are they??

the paddock definitely know about bloggers, its how they get invited to go!

  • me05/09/2009 at 23:43

"aware of" is very different to "listener" though.

  • me05/09/2009 at 23:44

the paddock definitely know about bloggers, its how they get invited to go!

again though. a quick google will tell you that. it doesn't necessarily mean they "read" bloggers stuff. they just know how to find them.

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 23:44

don't know. we know a couple of teams have listened in the past. red bull and a few others. i doubt they'd be regular listeners.

    Pretty cool.

I dunno. I'd imagine the 'grunts' who did the donkey work would because they probably aren't privy to a whole lot of info. PR people might to see how the team/drivers come across. I'm not saying the higher-ups would.

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 23:46

someone said that tremayning was being discussed at williams hq a while back. i suspect that's about all though. why would anyone inside the paddock listen to people who knew less than they did?

They are trying to sell to us. That is their business. Racing drivers and the top technical guys have big egos so will be curious what people say about them.

  • me05/09/2009 at 23:46

I dunno. I'd imagine the 'grunts' who did the donkey work would because they probably aren't privy to a whole lot of info. PR people might to see how the team/drivers come across. I'm not saying the higher-ups would.

my guess is a team might listen to a couple of shows if there were considering starting their own. but who knows.

part of me would rather not know, to some extent.

  • Pat W05/09/2009 at 23:47

my guess is a team might listen to a couple of shows if there were considering starting their own. but who knows.

Possibly, and possibly if they want to reach out for a tie-up or what have you.

part of me would rather not know, to some extent.

From your POV I totally understand that.. the pressure would be somewhat different...

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 23:48

part of me would rather not know, to some extent.

Look how many insiders found out about the Felipe Baby song. You probably got blacklisted when you started killing celebrities though.

Killing drivers probably doesn't go down well with teams. No wonder they want you to share their ace videos.

That was probably the inadvertent posting on Autosport forum. Don't know who did that.

Did Rob not say dozens of people texted him about it?

  • me05/09/2009 at 23:51

Killing drivers probably doesn't go down well with teams. No wonder they want you to share their ace videos.

ahh, those videos are fab. can't get enough of that postage stamp sized fun.

  • Steven Roy05/09/2009 at 23:52

Why are they installing a GPS antenna on the ISS? Is it for the shuttle's satnav?

  • me05/09/2009 at 23:52

i forget. wasn't it 500 letters or something. if he said text, i'm pretty sure chrsitine would've requested that number.

Also they are F1 fans above all else, for that reason alone I imagine it got linked around..

That is massively impressive, you must have picked up some paddock people though that?

  • me05/09/2009 at 23:54

yep. three tweets and a strongly worded email did the trick.

  • me05/09/2009 at 23:55

we now know croftie and holly had listened to it. rob was played it by bbc tees. ummm, beyond that we know nothing.

You have to think if that many people with Rob's contact details heard it half the paddock must have done. The F1 journalists were taking bets on whether or not Christine sang it

wel they do work around a lot of fumes :P

Unfortunately I missed the sidepodfilmclub event of Talladega Nights but oddly enough they air showing the same film in America right now! Live commenting with one isn't as good as I had hoped though.
