Friday at long last, and even though we were lucky enough to have a bank holiday on Monday, it has still felt like a long week to me. For those returning to school, it is probably even longer, so let's talk about something else. It's Friday!

  • Last night, Kathi uncovered some pictures of Fisichella in his new home with Ferrari, and oh my god, is it good to see Rob with an actually capable driver. I never thought I would be relieved to see Fisichella anywhere near Rob, but there you have it. That is what Luca will do for you.
  • I spent some time updating the SPC Regulars page on the wiki recently, and have already blogged about what is new and improved, so I highly recommend you check out that post and then the wiki. Neil asked when one should consider oneself a regular, and I think that is an entirely personal decision. It could be when you start commenting every race, or if you show your face in each daily, or maybe when you sing songs about live show outtakes.
  • Finally, Alguersuari was in the news yesterday, talking about the fact that he is happy to keep on racing in other sports because above all things, as a 19 year old racer, he sees himself as a karting driver. Even above Formula 1. An interesting perspective on things, and a refreshing one. He's doing Formula Renault and karting alongside his STR responsibilities - yay for drivers doing other things.

That's all for now. Thanks to everyone who has pointed out the Franck news - he has been emailing Peter Windsor but that doesn't mean anything and I'm not getting my hopes up just yet. I'll see you in the comments.

Adblocker plugins don't work in Safari yet, I 'm sure it won't be for long

  • Alison03/09/2009 at 23:13

I don't understand how Amy's not been fired yet! I'd go mental if my staff were playing with electronic equipment in deserted corners of the office.

Mr C mentioned Carl Edwards breaking his foot in yesterday's Daily. Turns out he's got his sponsor mentioned in his presser about it. He's sponsored by an insurance company!

“I guess you never know when something is going to happen,” Edwards said Thursday afternoon in a statement issued by Roush Fenway Racing. “This is obviously an unforeseen accident and even though I am not going to miss work, my Aflac policy has me covered. I’ve now seen first hand how Aflac works and it’s clear that no matter how big or small the accident is Aflac is there for their policyholders.”

Awesome, i have really gotten into it this year, i still need to catch up withlast week though

I haven't either. I usually watch most races, not always all of them. This year I've caught perhaps two. I've got several stored on my freeview recorder, I guess the benefit to MotoGP is the races are quite short.

  • Alison03/09/2009 at 23:55

    What are the options?

Hmmm not very plentiful. I mean I have a car, I can go somewhere but there's nowhere very interesting around here really :P

  • Nick04/09/2009 at 00:12

So I am a figment of your imagination?

This is a big philisophical issue, in theory the whole world i perceive could be a figment of my imagination..

But no, you exist, but i cant completely believe in the existence or location of a place until i have been there.

It is a bizare policy i know, but basicly i have faith in your location but not belief until i have been there...

I am afraid that I am one of the few people that does not confuse the word "famous" with the "popular" but for me famous implies that you are remembered tens/houndreds/thousands of years after your death for being useful to society. Here's my list:

    I) Sir Winston S. Churchill

    II) Thomas Eddsion

    III) Alexander Graham Bell

    IV) Socrates

    V) Karl Marx

    VI) Henry VIII

    VII) James Watt

    VIII) Michelangelo

    IX)Thomas Hobbes

    X) Neil Armstrong

Have you ever been called to get a cat out of a tree or is that just on tv?

  • Joe in Fla04/09/2009 at 00:53

Have you ever been called to get a cat out of a tree or is that just on tv?

I actually did once. It was at the top of a tree next to the tee on a golf course howling his head off. But the typical answer to this call is, "Have you ever seen a cat skeleton in a tree?"

  • Nick04/09/2009 at 00:54

    Hehe great response!

  • Alison04/09/2009 at 00:56

When I was in Germany this summer, at one of the campsites we stayed at this convoy of trucks pulled up into the field next door

One of them was a fire engine, one had a yacht on it, the last one was a normal truck with a marquee in it, benches, camping equipment, enough beer to sink an oil tanker

The local fire station were out for a night of laughter....

I suspect that the anchor might be for a boat fire, if the boat burns through its moorings and tries to float away, but it'll only get so far.

    Did Dallas crash a truck?

Not that I heard but I am sure they are not too proud to accept a free fire truck that falls on top of them.... I just had to think up of some US City that is to the west of you (Where the Hurricanes usually travel to make the joke work and somehow Nolan Ryan came to mind, so => Arlington ==> Dallas.

Unless you are great at mesuring distances, it might be pretty hard to tell the difference between a MARMOT (Groundhog) and a Beaver if they are crossing open ground unless you look at their tails. The Beaver has the flattened one so that It can spread the mud that glues its dam together.

Marmots burrow so their tails look like a normal animal tail.

Well, here is me thinking "What is a Marmot?" When I am whating McLarens dodge a groundhog....

I do remember from a Canadian Grand Prix that some commentator thought a Beaver got hit by a car too. Think it was the same Groundhog/Marmot - hence how easy it is to mis-id the two creatures...

Blah. Only 2 games in a 3 game series. Wining the Division give you the home field advangte during the ALCS, and frankly the Wild Card is a little dangerous as you have watch all the other teams in the League to see if they have developed better win/loss %ages than you.

interesting article at the PLUS section of autosport.com on the 2010 calendar. According to Rencken an insider close to FOM is suggesting that Bernie actually has problem to get 18 tracks on board and the 2010 season may end up with 15 races only.

"Well, the difficulty (Bernie) Ecclestone has is to fill the calendar with 17 dates. Forget the 18 races everybody is talking about. We will be lucky if there are 17," he said before mentioning that Germany's Hockenheim was not (yet) committed to the cause, that rumours in Shanghai suggested the Chinese venue was seeking an out a year ahead of schedule and that Istanbul looked increasingly shaky.

The €90m five-year lifeline said to have been offered to Valencia's promoters by the local communitat was, he said, rumoured to be tentative and required ratification. It is public knowledge that doubts exist over Donington's readiness to host a race in June 2010.

"There could," he concluded, "be as few as 15 races on the 2010 grand prix calendar..."

Thanks dude. MotoGP is on, and it's a very interesting race. Lorenzo is only one race win behind Rossi in the points (as he fell at Indy), but it's Rossi's home race...

  • Amy04/09/2009 at 09:17

    Liiiies.

Weigh 3 eggs (lets call it x grams)

    x grams of flower

    x grams of sugar

    x grams of butter

    easy :)

  • Alex Andronov04/09/2009 at 09:23

aye, chrome + wiki do not get on well at all

It's actually, I think, that the wiki doesn't know what Chrome is... I think it has cool features for Firefox and Safari, and other features for IE, and then it has cut down mode for anything else... If it just pretended it was Safari it would probably work.

  • Amy04/09/2009 at 09:23

I have moved from the dinner table to my bed. I fear this can only result in sleep

Argh! Stupid song! Go away! Out of my head!! :(

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)04/09/2009 at 09:35

    Stupid Stupid iTouch!

I am trying to use WiFi on it - the sort where you connect to the server and then log on via a web page. The trouble is, the way it connects is that instead of loading the start page, it asks me on the first time only for the details, then the next time it tries to auto-connect.

The problem is that it doesn't - a greyed out screen saying 'connecting' appears and just stays there. However, if I leave it for a minute, disconnect to the wifi and reconnect, it seems to work. Any ideas on how to fix it?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)04/09/2009 at 09:45

    Noooooooo!!

Well, she should make a new episode where she fixes it! That would be cool!

ummm... i swear she did that before? repaired a white horse.

they can't bring the tv series back and still have the same challenges, can they?

  • Christine04/09/2009 at 10:58

We are moving from MS SQL Server 2000 to MS SQL 2008 and from IIS Windows Server 2000 to IIS Server 2008. Across a large number of servers for our core database. Should be fun!

    good luck with that!

I was thinking a one-off special episode where she fixes it properly... a blast from the past and a chance at redemption, perhaps?

We could do with a TV show where someone makes a difference in the community right now...

  • Jon Waldock04/09/2009 at 10:58

they can't bring the tv series back and still have the same challenges, can they?

they had a special a while back, it was quite intersting

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)04/09/2009 at 11:00

ummm... i swear she did that before? repaired a white horse.

She repaired a white horse that she already broke?

She repaired a white horse that wasn't broken, and by doing that she broke it.

I think that she needs to make another TV program where she fixes the horse that she broke when she tried to fix it and it wasn't broken... :D

  • me04/09/2009 at 11:01

She repaired a white horse that she already broke?

it was the big white man on the hill, holding a club, and displaying his whatists. they fixed him by sending white stones down the slope in red tubes. so technically not the same horse, but the same principle.

how can you do the same job twice and only get it so wrong the second time?

  • Nick04/09/2009 at 11:01

This might seem random, but they really need to bring back the big breakfast!

  • Christine04/09/2009 at 11:01

I think that she needs to make another TV program where she fixes the horse that she broke when she tried to fix it and it wasn't broken... :D

It was broken, it's just her solution caused more problems than it solved. Silly Anneka.

  • me04/09/2009 at 11:02

they had a special a while back, it was quite intersting

they axed the show after a one or maybe more challenges caused more damage than they solved.

looks like they're off to a flying start.

    Hehehe :D

  • Alex Andronov04/09/2009 at 11:32

No no... We are laying the groundwork at the moment for the move... We have live data going into the old database until the london stock exchange closes at 4:30. That's when we start... or rather we turn the old one off... Then we switch to the IP Phones which will distract us... We are hoping to get the market close data into the new databases. That feeds in at 7... So we can only really be down for two and a half hours.

Did I mention we're also moving from 1 webserver to 2 so session is out the window and to 2 database servers so replication is going live in this too...

    What was I thinking?

Well yes... But the thing is if you're going to do it and take the time to migrate everything you should really go for it. Migrating to a new instance of SQL 2008 and then doing the Hyper-V would be a bit silly no?

At least that's what I'm telling myself!

  • me04/09/2009 at 11:51

agreed. but... session to non-session at the same time? replication added to the mix? you shoulda gone the whole way and decided oracle was better.

having said that, i'd have done exactly the same...

Question for all you F1 bloggers:

Has anyone here noticed that in the off-weeks there is far less traffic than during GP weekends?

  • Nick04/09/2009 at 12:14

Right i am off on adventures!

  • Paul04/09/2009 at 12:15

Has anyone here noticed that in the off-weeks there is far less traffic than during GP weekends?

Traffic was light on the drive in to work. A little heavier on the way home.

Not sure about the relation to F1.

(Can you tell it's Friday evening?)

    I am :)

um used to be a programmer now I'm a manager. I at no point installed any software anywhere. I had somebody do that. But in terms of the upgrade of the systems it's my department's call - not traditional IT.

But I decided the architecture. And it's my fault if it goes wrong.

  • Paul04/09/2009 at 12:16

#mediafuturechange story about Google maybe attempting to become the world's library

Interesting, do we want one company in charge of this and how do we digitise all the world's books? Surely there's a need for all this knowledge in the hands of all the world, so how do we do it?

  • Alex Andronov04/09/2009 at 12:25

You still need to learn blame-shifting then.

    heh.

I'm an annoying boss in that I'm a manager who still keeps a hand in the code. But I hopefully don't blame people who work for me. That will tend to lead you you running out of people to manage!

  • Paul04/09/2009 at 12:25

Interesting, do we want one company in charge of this and how do we digitise all the world's books? Surely there's a need for all this knowledge in the hands of all the world, so how do we do it?

Not sure if Google is the company to trust with this. Apparently, once the book is scanned, they own the copyright to that reproduction. (not sure exactly how that happens). So Google then "own" that reproduction.

    What's wrong with project Guttenberg?

  • Paul04/09/2009 at 12:26

  • Journeyer04/09/2009 at 12:44

Bank Holidays can just be created?

    In this country, they can.

The 7th is a day of mourning for a key (non-Catholic) church figure.

The 21st is a day of commemoration for the end of Ramadan, an Islamic holiday. A bit odd, considering we're a Catholic country, but who's complaining? ;)

  • Journeyer04/09/2009 at 12:44

    me neither :(

Is this like football where they have the backing of the chairman just before getting fired?

    But I hear it's the chairman Toyoda-san who's the F1 fan?

Yeah you mentioned that last time. I really don't think it matters if when it comes to the crunch, the decision will be axe F1 or something roadcar related...

    Afternoon all.

Apparently the press release from Haynes announcing the release of DT's book The Lost Generation (cracking good read, by the way) repeatedly refers to Tom Pryce as Tom Price.

What do you imagine the author's reaction will be? Grrrr!

I mentioned it yesterday. They cancelled a special stage because rocks and a fence were found blocking the road. Also on the road sections, the drivers have been complaining about being held up by protesters...

    Rotten stuff really :(

Nico after comparing driving his Dad's FW08 to his FW31:

"I should tell my Dad to drive a modern F1 car as it's for real men - his was too easy to drive!"

The only "deserted corner" in my office is the job room - which is so full of electronic equipment that nobody would feel the least bit tempted to play with equipment they've brought in. Sidepodcast, not being a site relevant to the company in any way, shape or form, is theoretically forbidden, but isn't blocked on the grounds that it could hypothetically have a vacancy on it for somewhere.

I bought the new Batman Arkham Asylum game last week and it's up there with the best games this year. I'm not even a big Batman fan, it's just immensely fun!

Depends what type of game you wanna play though. Mass Effect and Fallout 3 both stand out as very cheap but utterly superb standout titles on the console, probably my favourite 2 on the system.

    I laugh that http://www.romaingrosjean.com has a “What’s being said about Romain” section that has all his @ messages. And so many of them are bad! {Comment #442}

It's even funnier now because what's being said about Romain Grosjean at the moment appears to consist entirely of lists of Twitter accounts that happen to feature his Twitter username. So most of what is being said about Romain isn't even about him..

  • Lukeh04/09/2009 at 17:09

Essentially it's oblivion set in the future. With guns :P

    Noo don't say that. :(

I know why people say that because they seem similar but they're world apart. The combat system on Fallout 3 is absolutely immense, ocne you've played both for vast amounts of times you notice how diffferent they really are. I won't even begin to admit how many hours I have spent playing both, according to my save files.... ;)

    I’m such a nerd, in the 7 years of Secondary School, i never got a detention :D {Comment #517}

I had loads of detentions in secondary school, ranging from the sensible (I wasn't much good at handing in homework during weeks when the bullying was overwhelming) to the daft (I once got one for handing homework in when everyone else "forgot" and another for asking for help from a teacher on an assignment because the teacher couldn't be bothered to make his meaning clear). At least twice I got detention for no discernable reason.

Happily, I never received any in sixth form (though I did net a few scoldings).

  • Alianora La Canta04/09/2009 at 17:16

I’ve found someone who’s worse than Badoer!!

    Franck Perera qualified 29.957 seconds off pole for the GP2 race….and because he was off the 107% he wasn’t allowed to race! {Comment #521}

I thought Franck was a better driver than that?!? (Or have I confused him with Monsieur Montagny?) Even Ricardo Texieira wasn't that slow...

Question for all you F1 bloggers:

    Has anyone here noticed that in the off-weeks there is far less traffic than during GP weekends? {Comment #635}

Mine doesn't (the only thing that seems to make any serious effect on my page views is frequency of blogging). Oddly, my worst week for views in the last few (apart from the week when I forgot to put up any new writing) was the Hungarian GP weekend! But it's very much the exception rather than the rule - most places have huge problems getting people interested in reading their work on non-GP weekends.

    Evening Folks!

Everyone having a good Friday or isn't it living up to Thursdays highs?

  • Alianora La Canta04/09/2009 at 17:27

Traffic was light on the drive in to work. A little heavier on the way home.

Not sure about the relation to F1.

    (Can you tell it’s Friday evening?) {Comment #637}

If you meant the other sort of traffic, the traffic seems heaviest during summer weekends, when the football team is playing at home and any time during December (when it's practically gridlocked all month).

    Hey Christine, isn’t it a little early for Italian GP preview quotes (from McLaren) {Comment #675}

It is. Then again, McLaren (Kovalainen apart) probably wants to forget Spa as soon as possible!

  • Christine04/09/2009 at 17:36

  • Alianora La Canta04/09/2009 at 17:36

    Apparently the press release from Haynes announcing the release of DT’s book The Lost Generation (cracking good read, by the way) repeatedly refers to Tom Pryce as Tom Price. {Comment #688}

While I'm doing covering letters (that's my productive task for the day), do you think I should send one to Haynes to ask about proofreading and copy-editing vacancies?

OK, maybe this is old news, but have you seen this picture of Fisichella?

    http://colunistas.ig.com.br/victormartins/2009/09/03/fisico-il-spagnol/

Pay attention to the flag on Fisi’s overalls. Is this suit waiting for someone else? :)

    (Probably it’s just Gené’s suit, but it is funny to imagine that it could be Alonso’s) {Comment #710}

I suspect it is Gené's. Marc is only 1cm taller and last time I saw a figure for his weight (which was admittedly in 2000), he wasn't much heavier...

(What surprised me is that although Fernando is 1cm shorter than Giancarlo, he's also 3kg heavier).

  • Nick04/09/2009 at 18:30

I wonder if Piquet will be in f1 next year.

If we asume fisi retires and massa returns, there are 6 spots on the grid next year and a space at force india now.

    Who can fill those spots?

    Liuzzi, Hulkenberg, Ant... Pedro/Genewho else?

I am not sure Jonathon qualifies for a superlicence. the FIA rules say you have to finish in the top 6 of the IRL

I haven't heard who is new to sue Apple today. Can I claim substantial damages for the loss of my scroll wheel? ;)

Are you sure it's not just in need of a clean?

  • Bassano Clapper04/09/2009 at 22:24

Are you sure it's not just in need of a clean?

It's not a mighty mouse. It's only certain functions too so either a logitech or a point update will do the trick at some point, I'm sure

Damn, there goes my million dollar lawsuit

  • Bassano Clapper04/09/2009 at 22:25

I'd gladly take one of these beautiful iPhone cases as compensation though

  • Alison04/09/2009 at 22:26

I have trouble believing this because I have a small spider colony in my bedroom. The spiders are too lazy to cross the room and therefore cannot bother me at night. They are also too scared of Mum's vacuum cleaner to leave the room.
