Happy birthday to a certain Andy Taylor, hope you have a good day and celebrate accordingly. Also, get well soon to Lou, who needs all our Sidepodhugs and best wishes to shake off the flu. Now, parish notices out the way, it's time to talk about Formula One:
- I have three very different takes on the Malaysian GP for you - starting with Lukeh's fabulous race reviews (I love the scoring and podium graphics). Pat has changed the way he writes up each event, and I really like the more personal approach. Finally, RG has his new team championship standings updated following Malaysia and I'm happy that Lucas di Grassi got some points on the board.
- We have a fabulous post-race debate ongoing, and would you credit it, it's about Lewis Hamilton. We all saw him weaving around the home straight during yesterday's Grand Prix, but what did you think of it? Was it worthy of a penalty or are people overreacting? Let us know your thoughts.
- In not really F1 news, it's a Bank Holiday in the UK, and if you have a couple of hours to spare, why not listen to Giggles Radio? Alex hosts a weekly radio show with two hours of fabulous songs, all surrounding one letter of the alphabet. It's great for background music, if you're busy finishing up your Easter Eggs.
That should do it for now. I hope you have had/are having a great weekend and you know how it goes, I'll see you in the comments.
Oh OK - seems I missed the Sunday-Monday crossover. Anyhoo, I shall repeat...
Question for F1 fans everywhere - why is the Bahrain Grand Prix on a Sunday? Would it not make more sense to do it on Saturday?
Happy birthday Andy.
Small link fail in the daily post!! ;)
The year is just flying by....
Happy bday Andy and get well soon lou. Cheers for the plug Mrs C.
And the start of my two week Easter holiday! (filled with lots and lots of lovely revision)
Ooh thanks for the plug :)
And I just remembered, in case you do use it, I forgot to have a rant at the stewards about Hamilton.
...in the voicemail
Just saw a tweet saying there has been a 3.4 aftershock
@Pingineer:
1x 6.9 earthquake in Guadalupe Victoria, 2x 4.0 earthquakes in North California, 1x 3.4 Julian (near San Diego)
Sounds like the whole of California is getting a shake
Happy Birthday Andy!!
aww thank you for the mention in the daily Christine.
and with that, i'm off to get more sleep, night all xxx
Night and have a lie in.
Good night.
Night and gets better soon :)
Night Lou
I can't decide what to do.
Dance??
*raises eyebrow*
Finally getting to watch Day 3 of Rally Jordan, although the result was spoiled for me in the pub last night
>:(
Disneyland rides closed for inspection for earthquae damage
The eyebrow dance?

Another 5.1 in California

This is clearer. Looks like it has been active all week

So mostly baby earthquakes with a few big ones to (hopefully) finish it off. Hope it doesn't get any bigger
RT @RaoulFOX5: USGS upgrades socal #earthquake from 6.9 to 7.2 @fox5sandiego
I read that as social earthquake
So did I initially :)
@wilw
Apparently the #earthquake was upgraded to a 7.2, but I'm still seeing a 6.9 from the Russian judge. (kids, ask your parents.)
:D
Anyway, I'm playing with iTunes and blogging again
Just done with iTunes and am going to finish my Malaysian GP weekend review now.
F1 & Motorsports Archive shall be officially relaunched at Midday GMT later today. Hooray for interwebberry!!
Mine crashed. It likes CPU cycles when working out the track volumes and compiling the genius thing at the same time..
Oh lovely.
I don't have any CPU issues like that, for me Firefox is sometimes the problem
Mine takes a good minute to load up. Too much music & podcasts.
The genius thing when it works, is quite good.
I turned off the genius thing, but yes I have found the later versions of iTunes to be much slower
that has become really slow these days. It could be the add-ons for me though. Chrome is best, but still has trouble with some sites, like the FIA one.
I'm running FF, Tweetdeck and iTunes and all three like their memory.
this is my new favourite thing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Blkx6axytKQ&feature=channel
You know how you know somethings completely ridiculous, but totally addictive.
that is that. ;)
night all
That's awesome, and he's right as well :)
Night - and I'm off too. Not too tired but best not screw up the bodyclock completely for Tuesday's work..
night lads
http://twitpic.com/1db5i2 - I know this has been discussed a number of times, but I think the look on the faces of Jake and DC say it all.
gosh I really hate flatmate hunting :(
The Mark Webber Nanny State rubbish is still going on in the media, a week later. Victoria is sooo lame.
and in girl news, Jessica wants to know if Catherine is really Catherine :D
http://twitter.com/jessybondgirl/status/11624794822
Ah, it's a hard life! http://twitpic.com/1dd2ae
:)
Morning everyone :)
I was up until late playing drunken Wii was good fun...
ooh what were you playing?
this would have been the place to watch last night
Morning all
which part of the country are you in now?
Steven! What are you doing here, is the time all wrong?!
#sidepodspace
Less than 2 hours to the launch of the space shuttle Discovery. THe crew are loaded and the close out crew are finishing off their job.
I'm on the murray river at Renmark. Nice!
For once it looks like weather is going to be good all the way down to launch time. No issues at all. I can't remember the last time that happened
ooh very nice. The Melbourne branch of the Australian Sidepodfriends are about to embark on what is hopefully the first of many post-race-debrief-dinners :D
cool, say hi. I am also very jelous about Spa
ahh well, there's always Malaysia 2011 :D
yes, I think there is.
#sidepodspace
1 hour 30 minutes to launch and the close out crew are safety wiring the shuttle door. No issues at this time
I should say for anyone who missed it bedfore sidepodcast has a special interest in this shuttle mission because Dan Brunel knows one of the astronauts.
wow. Go sidepodastronaut
sidepodastronaut
http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/Bios/htmlbios/metcalf-lindenburger-dm.html
she is one of these teachers they send to space?
She used to be a teacher. There are I think 3 astronauts on this mission who were originally recruited as part of some education program but she is an astronaut rather than a teacher who is doing one mission and then going back to teaching. They have not sent a teacher into space for a very long time because the last one got killed
ok. They have a really interesting program. It such a shame they are stoppng the shuttles
Hello from me too. I'm having withdrawals and have to go back to work tomorrow
It looks like it is the middle of the night in Florida
I think I have forgotten how to work. Hi Jeremy!
I just can't figure out how NASA got themselves in a position where they have nothing that can take people into space for 7 years. That's crazy
I thought you might have gotten lost somewhere, this weekends threads were suspiciously lacing of "go Lewis"
Lots of Wii resort things
:)
I think that's a bit of a reflection on the US as a whole
Does she have twitter? Could we get a Sidepodcast Shoutout from space?
that would be awesome
that would beat Ant and Crofty, just.
I haven't seen one for her but there is one twitter account tha carries tweets from all astronauts of all nations. We have a launch in an hour and not a single astronaut has tweeted in 3 days. You would think NASA would get technology
http://twitter.com/NASA_Astronauts
do those guys have sidepodcast as part of their script now?
One hour to launch. The close out crew have left the pad and everything is on target for the launch. There is a ten minute launch window starting at 11:18 UK time. Launch is set for 10:21am
11:21am
and who is chasing them in China?
Journeyer is going to that race
Journeyer
Booo. I am almost in the outback, and it is cloudy at night. Wouldn't you know it!
really? That's great!!
Right, I am off to find Pamela. If I need any help picking what to eat I shall turn to ye all here in the comments
:D have fun
Have fun
i just had a race to myself to see what it would be like. i had the idea that perhaps those of us who have the ability, should record ourselves yelling at the tv. i certainly yelled 'go lewis' a lot :)
It was a good race for yelling at him
i started with a lot of 'noooooo' at mark webber
ha, yes. For various reasons
when do you have to be back home?
next week. Few more days away yet
Most of the comments here were either people saying I see Vettel has proved he can overtake or others saying overtaking at the start doesn't count.
Loved the on board of Lewis's start. Looked like everyone decided to switch to the clean side of the track and leave the dirty side to him.
seems o me Mark just didn't cover properly. Maybe he should have weaved a bit more :-)
45 minutes to launch and nothing is happening. Everything is on target for the launch and while the astronauts and launch crew are working through checklists there is nothing much to see.
OH something just happened. There are three trans-Atlantic abort sites which the shuttle will go to if it hits problems early in the flight. The French site at Istres has just been cancelled as an option due to high winds. If they have to land in Europe it will be in Spain.
He opened the door wide open like he thought he had a significant lead. I guess at the next start everyone can weave all over the place and only get a warning flag
well maybe, but I hope not. I think things have been about right so far, as you said in your other post. Would have been bad if Vettel lost the race for passing under yellows for instance.
Duck! http://twitpic.com/1ddc3m
I said that?
you said things were being judged on whether they were dangerous. I think the stewards are doing the right thing this year
I don't think I did. I think the stewards have been far too lenient so far. There have been a few things that should have been dealt with more severely like Lewis weaving and Schumacher ignoring a flag at an earlier race.
I like the idea of drivers as stewards but if they are going to adopt the footballers attitude of letting some things go they should be replaced.
30 minutes till launch and everything still OK. THe launch is going to be spectacular as it is still going to be dark.
hmm ok. I don't agree, but there you go. If this was 2008, Webber would have had a 10 spot grid penalty, Hamilton a drive through and Vettel a 25 second penalty. And I would have thrown something at the TV. I really don't see the problem with a warning to say"don't do that " especially if it is just defensive driving. There is a lot of that sort of thing that happens down the lower places we don't see on tv
love those in the dark
I think Vettel had a case because he came up on a slow car and it wasn't unreasonable for him to think it was the cause of the yellows. Weaving in F1 is ridiculous. I know it happens at other levels but if someone tried that in the local FFord championship they would be penalised.
NASA TV commentators are hopeless. This guy is just reciting random facts
Eastern range currently no go for launch owing to some kind of message encoder. Whatever that means.
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/04/05/f1-digest-2010-malaysia-gp/
they seem to do that all the time. You would think they could get someone interesting/interested. How do they expect to get people interested in space again?
Paul,
I Agree. It's good to see the Stewards using common sense rather than one rule fits all. Last year Alonso, Webber, Vettel and Hamilton would have all got penalties for being racing drivers if they had done what they have done in the last two races this year. This year, so far, has been a refreshing change. One of the reasons could be because they have an ex F1 driver as a steward. Someone who has actually been there and done it.
S.
I don't understand NASA. They have a huge government budget but they lauch when the whole of the USA is sleeping and anyone who woke up early is going to be bored to death by the commentators.
The command message encoder problem has cleared and we are now go for launch
phew that's good. I'm sure the NASA tv guy explained all that
20 minutes till launch and everything looking good. No issues being worked.
The two ships that recover the solid rocket boosters are now in position. Talk about leaving it to the last minute
Ha ha! my TV would have had some Gorge Bush treatment as well Paul, ha ha!
Morning all. Have just seen on TV that the last episode of Friends was voted the biggest tear jerker moment on television programmes.
Unbelievable
episode of what?
Somehow, *somehow*, a recent live episode of Eastenders was 2nd or 3rd. This was of tv programmes of all time.
NASA seem to have made a minor adjustment to the launch time. Only a few seconds difference though
morning
i've hooked a laptop to the tv, to watch the launch
All mission controllers have been polled and we are go for launch.
9 minutes till launch time.
Morning. Should be good as it is pitch black in Florida
I may never leave this spot. I have coffee and cake coming :-)
I have a 2 and a half minute delay on my video
Am now watching Space Shuttle launch live. Will have a coffee whilst i watch.
just said -4 here
Countdown is at one minute
to be fair my comment was a joke about the way people always say he can't overtake despite him clearly being able to.
Alex is clearly trying to stir things up
Wow! great watching the launch live!
Definitely a trouble maker
Looked good. Glad they got past throttle up OK
did they have the totally emotionless voice-over?
moi?
see! Now he's using French
I wish they would stop the political nonsense but every launch you get someone talking about heading into the future by creating new technology today or similar bull
what is throttle up? Aren't they at max throttle anyway?
They are at launch but they throttle back when they hit maximum aerodynamic pressure. As they get higher you will hear them say go at throttle up. THat was when one blew up before and I get nervous every single time till they get past that point.
Yes, good feel good factor watching the build up and launch on a bank holiday. Telling a mate of mine on the phone about it as it happened. He has not got the internet and was dead jealous. This just might change his luddite ways and get him to hook up, ha ha!.
:D
oh, I see. Thanks. Yes I remember that one
is he living in 1998?
Oh that new fangled internet fad!!
It will never catch on. Only a matter of time before they replace it with some new gadget
Mr C is working on that, right?
Either that or cupcakes. I am not sure wihich has priority
There is not going to be a lot more to see from the shuttle today beyond replays. Oc they hit orbit the rest of today and tomorrow are taken up with checks of equipment and the heatshield. Wednesday they dock with the ISS and Friday is the first of three space walks with the others next Monday and Wednesday.
During the spacewalks the sidepodastronaut will operate the robotic arm from inside the ISS
Ha ha!, 1978 more like.
hello
Heya :) how are you feeling?
Morning
a bit better, no dizziness today, and apparently my temperature is almost normal, just a stupidly sore throat and fuzzy head now... :s am gonna take it easy today i think. how is everyone else?
Afternoon folks.
All good. Just watched the space shuttle launch
Yay for feeling better :)
I'm ok, just hoping to get lots of work done!
oo sounds exciting :)
speaking exciting things, Jessica and Catherine are talking to each other on twitter :)
do we need to shoo you? ;)
I saw the tweet asking if Catherine was real
should Lou shoo you too?
I think so. Feel free to shoo!
shoo, shoo, shoo, shooby doo, shoo shoo.
can Lou shoo whenshd has the flu? Seem like a tough thing to do
*disappears*
hehehe i was gonna say... it's a bit tricky.. i'll just wave goodbye instead.;)
I've just been told I have to put another blind up!!!
Will the torment never end?*
*yes this is the last one
do you have an orange drill?
oh no!!! hehe :)
No!
I'll attempt to live stream... It seemed to help last time :)
I won't start for half an hour.
Can you make sure not to unplug the router this time?
how are expected to complete this task then?
yay! something to keep my occupied (i get bored easily when doing nothing)
I will attempt not to... But nothing in this world can be guaranteed :)
I am not sure exactly.
I do have instructions though which is a step in the right direction I feel!
Is Kat in need of a laugh?
and sidepodadvice never goes astray
Have you got the facility to scan it in, so we can "help" you if you get stuck?
Apparently they are here: http://www.web-blinds.com/pdf/instructions_rollers.pdf
:D
Hi guys. How be we?
Are we ready?
Are we all sitting comfortably?
Then I shall begin :)
http://www.ustream.tv/user/alexandronov
Lemme just get the popcorn.
Hey TM
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/04/05/a-quieter-week-on-christines-rankings/
Or this one as well http://www.ustream.tv/channel/alexandronov
hi giggles! loving the sidepodmug :)
hi Kat!
Alex sounds like he knows what he is talking about
Afternoon everyone
hehehe i love how Alex just threw the instructions on the floor :)
did you say you were top fixing it, or face fixing?
Drinking coffee and reading comments is vital
Hi Leigh
oh no, decisions!
Hi Steven
Extreme Drilling.
Sounds like a show picked up on Channel 5.
Hold a drill bit against the rawl plug and find a drill bit that is about the same size
was about to say that.
you're drilling into stone right? not wood?
but a bit smaller
#asleep
oooooo boy. I'm glad you lot didn't see my renovations!
go for 5 i say
then tap it in
Use the 5mm and if the rawl plug doesn't fit then try the 6
Alex broadcasting. Now this I gotta see. :D
3/16th is inches.
Masonry with that coffee sir?
will you be able to get the drill in there?
Folks and folkettes,
The F1 and Motorsports Archive has made its move to Wordpress and is officially relaunched at http://theformulaoneandmotorsportsarchive.wordpress.com/
Time for a cup of tea.....
:D
And is about 4.5mm
LOL! Good drilling there.
dosent that mean 3/16ths of an inch? an inch is 25mm
'why is our house made of..... hard things?' ehehehehe :D
Correct, 3/16 inches is whatever 25.4 / 16 x 3 is.
AKA how people know how long it is.
Yes
orange. drill. required. maybe.
or bassano ;)
BASSANO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm struggling not to laugh here. :D
Are those definitely masonary drills?
#mfc sidepodcast on the iPad http://ipadpeek.com/?url=sidepodcast.com (not an actual iPad ;))
You need to put the rawl plug all the way in.
If it is hard to drill start with a smaller diameter drill then go to the size you need. That will be much easier
I am home! Sidepodcast Real Life Debrief was very good :D
And now Alex is putting up blinds? Life can't get any better :D
:D
a sidepodcast real life debrief?
hi amy! did you see Jessica and Catherine chatting on twitter?
...and now all that is done, the flat hunting begins in earnest again
Tell ya what Alex, live broadcasting this was a great idea. :D
Pamela and I went out for dinner, we plan to do this on Mondays after races from now on :D
I did see that on Twitter, I got very excited. I may have even commented about it while the UK was asleep :D
that drill is very loud
awww yay! you should record your convos about the race and make a podcast :P
hehe it made me happy :)
I'm very excited that in 138 days I can see the blinds in person.
Rawl plug in captain!
I want that!
Did you actually talk about F1 though? :P
Hi guys,
yes we did Jeremy! haha
Move to Melbourne :D
we did! Lots of talk about Spa and Malaysia and even a bit about Lewis :D
Hi Pamela
Hey Pamela!
I thought you said "World War 2 is in" then.
Good work. :)
You said something about needing a flatmate?
Go Lewis!
Rawl plug two is in. This is better than NASA TV
hi Pamela
I am a hoon. Think I'll be allowed back in?
Helllo Pamela
Hi Pamela and Amy. I need to move to Australia. But Giggles putting blinds up is great excitement. :D
Haha, no couples, and you can't leave Zoe behind!
This is excellent team work
don't blame us ;)
Instructions? What gave you the impression we knew what we were talking about?! :D
Need more torque? Use an F1 wheelgun!
This weekend is the first round of the LeMans Series at Paul Ricard. Audi have their new car racing for the first time but I can't find an entry list so I don't know if Franck is racing.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/82738
How many torques should he use?
is Ant racing?
ah you can't find the entry list... never mind :)
As many as he can get his hands on?
I don't know who is driving for Peugeot
We're not panicking. Laughing maybe!
When you put the screws in, the rawl plugs seat themselves in the holes you drill, so at least they stay in.
team giggles? we could be team kat you know :P
i'm reading i'm reading.
the pin thing that goes in the non-chain end of the blind, it says that you put it into the blind, and not the bracket. it looks like it clips into the bracket.
i've confused myself here
Alex's drilling scared off the spider! :D
WOW! It's a BLIND! :D
yay! :)
oh my god!
I feel the urge to give you a standing ovation.
the blind, is go for launch
What is the point of low irritant bug spray if it doesn't irritate the bugs?
Enjoyed? That's made my bank holiday that has! Cheers Alex!
it's sooo beautiful
It was a magnificent achievment. Disappointing it was over so quickly.
Poor Bassano will feel unneeded
I can't belive it took less than five hours! That's why we started now so we'd be certain to finish before dinner :)
:D
you could go knock on your neighbours doors and ask them if they need any blinds put up?
:D
The call to bassano was not required, and there was nothing to move out of the way.
my mum asks if you're both up to coming and putting up her kitchen blinds? :P
They might not want us live streaming from their house
I'm not sure we are actually competent ;)
Your house might be made out of hard things too.
ahhh that's true... its very old, so probably ;)
I need some blinds taken down, can you do that?
Probably :)
Success :)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/imblind-jpg
Nice little blind that.
And I'm off the watch some speedway, see yas in a few hours.
hooray! I shall head to the airport and await your arrival.
i've just been given some icecream.. i wasnt even aware we had any in the house....:)
Sounds like a plan... Our expenses bill might be quite high
I'm getting some in town now you've mentioned that. :)
it's not often i get ben and jerry's ice cream, i feel kinda privileged
Oh gawd, that + Haagen-Dazs + Carte Dor are my faves.
I'm going for a 99 with a flake in a minute - loving these free warm Mondays
:D
Is constrasftul a word? In the context 'newer technology can provide a more constrastful/constrasted/whatever image...'?
#nothere
No, try 'can provide a greater contrast...' maybe?
That sounds better, thanks.
Nope
Red Bull again saying they aren't running active suspension;
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/82741
I think what is happening is quite simple but very clever. I think they are simply using tyre pressures to adjust the ride height, you adjust pressures anyway so its discrete and no-one will notice you doing it. I also think that they have used journalists and their own mechanics to bring a sense of mystery around their speed, causing everyone to think its about this active suspension when really it's just down to a fast car but with the other teams using time and resources on active suspension techniques.
Thoughts?
I just think that Adrian Newey is one of the greatest designer's of all time and leave it at that. A drawing from dear ol' Adrian is might gold dust!
i think you're being very naive if you think that ferrari require a manual ride-height adjustment system yet red bull can achieve the same thing via the adjustment of tyre pressures.
back to cynicism school waldock, you're not trying hard enough.
I reckon Mclaren just took Adrian a bit literally last year when I caught him drawing a car for a McLaren related charity ;)
afternoon mr c lol
howdy.
you missed alex putting up a blind ;)
As Leigh said I think Mr Newey is the greatest designer ever and the car is just darn fast!
I don't do cynical. Often Too negative for my liking
by himself? how odd.
Kat helped.
uh-huh. suuuuure.
Kat helped, it took them less than 5 hours and everything
first he forgets to plug his website, then he installs a blind?
five? hours?
Something is wrong with me!
he did plug sidepodcast though.. in the way that he was drinking coffee from a sidepodmug :)
That would meanincreasing the tyre pressure when the car is heavier. If you don't touch the tyre pressures and add 160kg of fuel the extra weight will cause the tyre pressures to increase. Further uncreasing them to change ride height must take the tyres out of the narrow range they work in. I am no mechanical engineer but would increasing the tyre pressures and adding weight not change the camber angle of the wheels?
less than...
That's how long it took last time... This might have only been half an hour toady
Add weight does that anyway, you could factor all that in.
i demand the real alex back for 2010. clearly the decision to ban mid-day greggs refuelling has torn the soul out of alex.
That's how long the last one took
:)
On the plugging front I did think there wasn't much point in plugging sofaf1 when it just says Forbidden on it... I am currently trying to fix things
wow. jake is a masterful top-spinner. on eddie's sweaty nipples:
It was clear for all to see just how hot under the collar he was during that qualifying session, and I think his reaction is a small glimpse into the passion he still has for racing.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/jakehumphrey/2010/04/when_it_rains.html
How? You can't touch the suspension set up between quali and the race. So if you add weight and over pressure the tyres you can't counteract the effect of that. Besides Bridgestone is not going to let him run their tyres out of pressure range
No i mean you could factor that in when adjusting pressures and weight etc.
Just a thought
horner is talking cack, quite clearly. ted has said they have adjustable suspension since race one.
Hehehe! It wasn't just the collar, that's the problem.
They can't adjust suspension and active suspension is illegal?
Factor it in how?
Haven't read it yet but Scarbs has another post on it
http://scarbsf1.wordpress.com/2010/04/01/402/
If you knew how much weight you were going to put on and what pressures you were going to have, then you could adjust it so that when you put the weight on the angles were correct, but then you wouldnt have as good quali pace, so its not a definitive answer
ia m convinced you're wrong and i don't believe horner's being entirely honest. the statement is very carefully worded.
so whats the answer then?
I like that Jake is about as good at running as I am.
jon. i was noted by multiple photographers that the red bull was standing far too high on it's suspension after melbourne qualifying. these guys see a lot of cars. and they all said the same.
tyre pressures? really?
This comes back to something I was suggesting the other day... If the suspension was operating on some kind of timer (I suggested a slow leak) then they could say "it's not active because it does not respond to the car".
trust the photographers they're often the ones to spot these kinda things... e.g. - Darren Heath and the mclaren thing
i'd agree with that.
is the car was really high after qualifying (no fuel) then whats the issue?
active suspension works to keep the ride height the same when you have both no fuel and full fuel. if its high after quali their system is broke
i did not say it was a definite answer, just one that i thought may be true.
you may now return to the corner with your cynics hat on!
it didn't qualify like that did it? you can't even drive it like that!
i never leave
When does Parc Ferme conditions start?
As soon as you leave the pitlane for quali
i stand by my shot from qually (and still think the look on Jake's and DC's faces are gold) - http://twitpic.com/1db5i2
The issue is they run with a low ride height dragging the plank along the ground. After burning off 20kg of fuel the ride height should still be low not really high.
i think when you finish qually. but if the car slowly raises itself up with no-one touching it, the question is only "when it is measured".
:)
question then; what are the other cars like? are they really high in quali and low in the race finishing with it high at the end?
Ride height isn't measured by scrutineers. The only thing they would notice is if the rear wing etc was too high
only the ferrari changes ride height. and only manually during pitstops. so they're all the same height.
ahh, interesting.
They are higher in quali than when they start the race but only by a few mm. Quite why the Red Bull would be visually higher is beyond me
Right, I'm going to finally finish the Malaysian GP report and then do notes for Superleague - I may be back to a somewhat calmer self later
Remember folks: The 2010 Malaysian GP was orange!!
:D
this is odd
bah back to work in 7 hours, I had best get to bed. Goodbye sweet long weekend, you did not live as long as I wished.
night amy!
Hullo again, have had a quick break from my dissertation to tall you I've made a quick update to the podium graphics on my race review, I meant to do it last night but I had to rush to do other stuff, so here you go: http://gridwalktalk.wordpress.com/2010/04/04/malaysian-grand-prix-2010-red-bull-gives-them-wings/
Back to dissertation!
Hmmmm.. Twitter is over capacity - did something just happen in the world?
:D hehe love it :)
Is there a way to embed a podcast into a hosted by wordpress wordpress blog? Or is it just video?
[audio:filename.mp3]
i think?
aha thanks... it's actually [audio filename.mp3] no : but you helped me find it cheers!
no worries.
Gahhh!!
There are times my housemates drive me mad
>:(
This is one of those occasions.......
You'd think when they go to the toilet in their own place that they'd lift up the toilet seat rather spreading their liquid wares all over the seat!!
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr......
(and thus the hunt for a new place gathers pace)
...and now I'm calm again.
:)
Happy Birthday Andy

Hello all, how is everyone's Bank Holiday?
Hello Bassano
#hides
bernie told us to wait three races before panicking, and now after three races, he admits f1 has a problem:
We have been lucky with the rain. We have got to do something. For the first time the teams have realised that they have to do something about it. We don't need reverse grids, we just need more overtaking.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/motorsport/formulaone/7554032/Malaysian-Grand-Prix-Jury-still-out-as-teams-are-told-to-improve-action-or-else.html
Hi Bassano,
how are you?
About bloody time
Not bad thanks Leigh
A frustrating day at work where all the external groups to ours seemed reluctant to get anything done on time [tuts]
Never mind :)
Sounds like fun. I had an equally frustrating day drinking tea and trying to source ice cream
WHAT! ;)
Explains that then
Bassano I have a confession to make... I needed to put up a blind earlier... and it worked... we'll it's a bit wonky... but... It worked...
It's all on the ustream if you want to watch!
If it's wonky, you obviously weren't watching hard enough the first time
Who was doing the yammering while you worked?
I was attempting to multitask...
Katherine did a lot of the heavy lifting if I'm honest
i'm not sure, but i think kevin eason might be getting a little fed up with f1 travel:
Take my advice and stay home this summer. Go camping in Cornwall, walking in Wiltshire, freeze in Frinton … anything, but stay away from airports and long-distance flights.
[F1 mechanics] were telling me their daily allowance in Malaysia was the equivalent of £30. Thirty quid! One round of drinks in a half-decent bar would account for that lot in Kuala Lumpur at the moment.

didn't he have a few years off? gosh, to be whining after 3 races. #asleep
knuckles intact... I'm afraid it wasn't orange. Most of the walls weren't made of metal though :)
Unless inflation has rocketed since i visited that sounds a bit extreme from my memory of KL prices
Is this at The Ritz & how many people were in the round?

...spent nine years as Motor Racing Correspondent for The Times before leaving the paddock to become Sports News Correspondent in 2006. Once judged the most powerful journalist operating in Formula One, he has returned to his old job for the 2010 season
i guess he wasn't good at being a news correspondent?
i think the argument was the pound is worthless at the moment.
based on my investigation into hotel prices, I agree. For what I am paying for my hotel in Monza I can get much, much, much, much nicer in KL.
That definitely helps. Well done, my apprentice :)
I guess not. I'd better get to cancelling my trip then since Mr Times Blog told me to.
Which makes ebay.co.uk one of my favourite places at the moment.
yes, I am quite enjoying buying foreign currency for my trip at the moment :D
Forever the exchange market expert :D
Hehe.
I like that you've correctly picked up Engineering Step One: start with a tasty warm beverage
:)
You can't do a decent job unless you've had a good tea break first [or coffee]
We had a carpenter in the other day and he didn't take sugar in his tea!!!
just reading this week's gp+
"On Sunday when the rains stayed away, the grip was back and the race would have been rather undramatic had it not been for the four drivers who suffered most in qualifying fighting back to their rightful places in the F1 pecking order."
given that joe was another saying people should wait and see before writing off this season, i think people are coming around the idea we've been dealt a lemon of a season.
Wow!
Was there a pencil behind his ear though?
he did, otherwise I would have thrown him out as an imposter.
Hello everyone,
Just finally back to a place with internet (grrrrrrr... the parent's place has no web access... grrr)
Saw the shuttle launch this morning with Dottie in it. Just think, 24 months ago I was annoying her when she was showing my dad, my brother, my nieces, and I around the Johnson space center with questions such as "Where are the alien bodies kept?" and "Wow... this is a HUGE building, almost big enough to fake the moon landing in."
All I can say is awesome.
Anyhow, back to work :(
Sack Tilke, get Lukeh to design track modifications to all the Tilkedromes
Very wise
Does Dottie have twitter? Can she do a Sidepodshoutout from space?
that's a short term fix right there :)
So far, I'm seeing quite a bit of Alex commentating on Katherine's work, holding things and reading some instructions to her ;)
So... what's everyone up to this afternoon?
Myself I am editing a go for odd podcast.
I don't think she does. I'll ask my brother-in-law. I don't think they get very good web access in space. ;)
As for a shutout, I think she is a bit busy right now. She told me that they pretty much plan everything on the mission to the minute with little or no time to monkey around.
i just attempted to tidy my room.. couldn't and am now back laying on my bed listening to jonsi's new album feeling a little bored. yay for a go for odd podcast though :D
Another one? Cool
I am discovering Why I Can't Own a Canadian?

Finally!
I have potentially 2 in the bag or 3 depending on how things go with the edit... One was recorded in a curry house I am having a bit of background noise issues!
I agree. Once Red Bull sort out their car, it will just be too much.
The FIA really needs to hire Steven Roy and follow his rubric from his column.
The clinking of Cobra bottles?
Quite a bit
i think they've sorted it, it's game over. especially when only ferrari can match them and they're chewing through engines like they aren't limited to eight.
Well, only if RBR can sort out their reliability issues. So far, so good, but methinks unreliability will still rear its ugly head for RBR. And McLaren isn't too far behind on pace, either.
Hello, folks.
Bernie does this kind of thing every year to noise the teams up. I wouldn't take anything he says seriously
And a fab West Wing clip to boot
Hi Journeyer
but it's the opposite of what he said in bahrain.
What do they need to do with the allowance. The team will be paying the hotel and feeding them and we keep hearing of mechanics working to midnight.
It's just Bernie, who listens to what he says? :)
That west wing quote was from an unsigned quote on a website interestingly. Aaron Sorkin wanted to credit it but couldn't find anyone who would come forward and say it was them who wrote it.
they are, at circuits with very long straights. they're going to be hopeless in monaco for example.
You should have thrown him straight out. Clearly he is no good.
beer.
Interesting, didn't know that
I miss Sorkin TV
remember last year when people said JB would wrap up the championship really quickly but it went down to the second to last race cause Red Bull caught up?... we could still have a mildly interesting season if ferrari sort out their issues.. or if mclaren or mercedes catch up... or if the drivers adapt weaving knowing they'll only get a flag waved at them ;)
Paul christened her the sidepodastronaut this morning
Traditionally, McLaren do well at Monaco
They can tweet from the ISS directly now.
THey have time off scheduled. It's on the plan
but there pace is coming from the f-duct
A 5 Km/h lead?
if all else fails they could get JB to run the track... he was pretty good at that last year ;)
♥
That is the most sensible F1 comment I have ever read anywhere.
;)
Plus, if they can develop as well as last year, they should be clashing front wings at the front row in no time
i'm not convinced.
Too early for that. At Barcelona everyone will have huge upgrades and then we will get an idea how the next part of the season will go
Neither am I
But it's not beyond reason
I'm a practical optimist
Yes. What's unusual about that. He does that all the time to
but how many circuits don't have very long straights? most have them now. off the top of my head, only valencia doesn't have one.
You remember things about Valencia?
I think the F duct is over rated just as the twin diffuser was last year
you need esp. good straightline speed to overtake at Monaco due to a lack of straights to slipstream on. if they can make it work on shorter straights, i can easily see them being competitive there.
Thank F1 09 on the PSP for it. ;)
Singapore
True, but even they have one long enough straight that sees a lot of passing.
I just texted my brother-in-law.
He sent me this twitter link of astronauts that are in space now that are tweeting, Dottie isn't one of them.
Anyone signed up to the campaign to replace the Austrian National anthem with Rock Me Amadeus when Red Bull win?
If it wasn't on FB, I would
I didnn't know about that one but there is one that has all the astronauts tweets so you get those on the ground as well.
http://twitter.com/NASA_Astronauts
:D
#sameperson
Was just listening to Rock Me Amadeus earlier, actually. ;)
Second. Only I demand that Vettel or Webber put on a wig and rock out on a harpsichord when they play it.
Vettel is the F1 equivalent of Amadeus, actually. Young Austrian genius. :D
Oh wait, he's German. :D
This will upset the Apple fan boi community
Will the iPad blend?
That's weird... looks like wordpress video uses ogg vorbis...
Cos it's open source?
Reminds me of one of my favorite jokes. The greatest thing Austria ever did was make the world think Hitler was a German and Beethoven was a Austrian.
I've always thought Beethoven was German. I'm still amazed, though, how an Austrian ended up leading Germany... :D
turns out that he was quite persuasive!

Hi Alison
Lieu days = winner! :D
Evening all.
evening RG
Hey RG
How's tings?
Tings are alright, bit cold from the speedway, but yeah, not too bad. Everyone else?
Hi RG
Hey RG. :)
Too sleepy to chat later into the evening here. Night folks! :)

See ya mate.
G'night Journeyer

Hello
Hey Pat
Just listened to Red Bull's podcast. Pretty slick. I think it needs a tad bit more of development but pretty darn good.
Of course nothing will top Claire ;)
They have a podcast, on iTunes or site only?
S'ok, found it
http://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/red-bull-racing-podcast/id362080698
Thanks for the heads up Dan
I think I saw it on iTunes the other day.
Hey Pat.
they also have a new app too.
Just caught up on comments... People were looking for an entry list for the Le Mans Series race this weekend:
http://www.planetlemans.com/lms-2010-8-heures-du-castellet-entry-list/
Yaay, Rob Bell.
Didn't realise Fisichella was doing it.
awww no Davidson :(
Why on earth do they still have the GT1 class. What a joke.
I find it interesting that there is only one 908 and one R15. Is Audi runing the R15+ or just last year's car?
And at long last, the 2010 Malaysian GP (Rd 3, Sepang, April 2nd-4th) - http://tinyurl.com/ylqwcm5
Thanks Pat.
Disappointing that there are no Peugeots. It would be interesting to compare the new Audi to them.
I see the Mansell family are racing if such a word can be used for his kids
I am surprised so many teams have three drivers for an 8 hour race
I've no idea. I thought the new rules might get some more cars but no..
It is an R15+, the ugly one..
It would've been nice but I guess they feel confident enough or that the ORECA car will be enough.
:-D
When you look through the field it looks like every British F3 champion who didn't make F1 is racing
i love the big picture today

Good evening :) I've just finished an entire chapter for my dissertation that I started this morning, woohooo!
*relaxes*
Well done you
wow! *applauds* :)
Does Mr C have a brother?
Dave Gorman asked for tweets: ... have you ever misused a domestic appliance, tool kit etc. Successfully or not
Best response:
My brother made instant mash. Instructions: add to boiling water. He poured it into the kettle.
#SorryMrC
2,700 words! means I'm up to roughly 9,000 words, and if I do what I have planned for tomorrow I should have that 12,000 target I was hoping for by Wednesday

I love #5
Yaay, nice work mate. :)
Nice one Lukeh
:D
that's awesome!
Excellent
Though the lamb in #27 is pretty cool
i think christine should get one of the cute baby bear cubs from #20
I think she'd dye it to look like a panda
I went karting in Newark again today. It was lots of fun, there were five other people karting there and I improved by another 2 seconds :)
well seeing as mr c wont let her have a panda a bear seems the best alternative ;)
This is very true :D
Question for F1 fans everywhere - why is the Bahrain Grand Prix on a Sunday? Would it not make more sense to do it on Saturday? {Comment #1}
Bahrain's on a Sunday because that's normal for F1 races. I wonder if a Saturday might make more sense for the race.
What is really clear to me is that Friday as a day for running F1 cars in a Muslim country is pointless. Religion is considered more important than racing over in Bahrain and Malaysia. Abu Dhabi probably got away with it on the grounds that the capacity was so low in the first place.
Maybe the solution is to go Wednesday-Thursday-Saturday, with Friday off Monaco style.
That's a nice improvement!
Paddock Life - Sepang

The hotels had a hard time
I prefer my solution of having the Bahrain GP somewhere else :)
Lies!!
i hate that monaco does the wednesday thing. why can't there just be a schedule and people stick to it?
a modern f1 weekend is fri/sat/sun. i you want to host a race you should agree to do that. monaco included.
That's a nice improvement! {Comment #537}
It was. I was 6 seconds off the lap record, but apparently that was because there was a kart with a new faster engine going round. I was 1 second off the fastest time in a comparable kart, which considering where I was in January is nice. Also, on my second 15-minute run half my laps were within 0.6s of each other.
I will confess to two crashes and two instances of ploughing though...
I prefer my solution of having the Bahrain GP somewhere else :) {Comment #539}
That works for me too ;)

There were of course some deliberate [April Fools] jokes though - and it was Scuderia Toro Rosso who kicked off the japes with a tale about how one of its old refuelling rigs had been turned into an ice-cream vending machine

I love the Nico Hulkenburg april fools :D
'laundry emergency' desk sounds a bit extreme :)
i hate that monaco does the wednesday thing. why can't there just be a schedule and people stick to it?

Even if it makes no sense for either the venue or F1 to do so? At the moment, I am convinced the rigidity of the offering given to the circuits is losing spectators and thus decreasing the likelihood of circuits either offering the remaining spectators affordable tickets or being willing to take a more expensive contract in exchange for not doing Bernie's stupider ideas.
Put simply, the modern F1 weekend isn't working for many places. Some sort of solution is needed and given the divergent needs of a global spread of circuits, I'm not convinced any consistent offering could be made to work anymore. As long as it's clearly signposted beforehand what each event is going to do, the TV spectators are in a much better position to be flexible than the ones who turn up at the track (though both have limits).
i'd argue you better retain an audience with consistent timing.
By the time a very wet Button returned to the paddock, a lightning storm had succeeded in knocking out the power in McLaren's offices – so he duly sat down with the press in near full darkness to talk about his build-up to the weekend.
"It's cosy isn't it?" he smiled. "It's like going camping..."
hehehe :D
I can't see Bernie going for that - doesn't he view people at the track as a necessary evil required only to allow him to get to the TV money?
Happy birthday Andy!
I woudn't object if one race per year was on a Saturday afternoon or early evening... but that would screw up quali.
the Jenson one makes me giggle too.
Friday night Quali, Sat night race - once in the year would work for me
i think that would drive me nuts.
There's a lot to be said for that
Sunday afternoons for 80% of the calendar are a thing of the past
It would be for the local audience though really no?
Sadly
How come?
agreed. but the money for the sport comes from the tv audience, i can't be doing with races on saturday. just race somewhere where motorsport is more popular.
The thing is that if I have to miss quali because it's in the working week I'm going to be cross.
seconded
I'd imagine Bernie would plan a Saturday race to coincide with a day off for the Premiership (around the time of an international). I mean if he is content on screwing the rest of the world for a few measly millions in Europe, then let him have at it!!
I keep saying the Bahrain GP at Imola would be a winner, but I don't think anyone is buying it.
I can explain to you how that feels. ;)
It wouldn't even occur to him to do that.
heheh. i could cope with that.
Imola has a fantastic atmosphere and it being the traditional start to the 'European season' was something I enjoyed... but the races there were dire. Worse than Barcelona. Schumi vs Alonso was good but they couldn't pass.
i'd argue you better retain an audience with consistent timing. {Comment #550}
If that was so, then angling the start times of Asian races to suit European audiences should have worked. It hasn't, because it's inconvenienced as many people as it's helped. From that, it's not such a big leap to imagine people might be helped by having the race weekend when it suits them rather than when it suits some centralised timetable. All the technologies that are helping TV viewers watch stuff at times that are inconvenient for them - iPlayer Especially now F1 viewership is expanding into territories whose weekends aren't like European ones.
The two things that still hold true are that the race really must be at some point between an hour after everyone gets home on Friday and about midnight on Sunday, and that the main practise, qualifying and the race need to be on different days (ideally with no more than three hours of on-track activity each day). The race is the one thing that really can't be skipped in a F1 weekend and thus needs to be in the actual weekend. The different days bit is because the F1 has to fight with other activities and if it monopolises too much time on a given day, the F1 fans will lose out to people who prefer a broader range of activities each requiring less commitment in a given day. Apart from that, the flexibility of F1 fans is astonishing (if the lessons of the last few years I've spent communicating with them on the internet is anything to go by).
Friday evening?
i'd argue you better retain an audience with consistent timing. {Comment #550}
But didn't that tactic cost F1 in the region of 30 million viewers world wide in 2009
better.
the thing is i doubt it would work. there's no grass roots motorsport in these countries. no-one goes karting, and no-one cares.
shouldn't a country have to guarantee an audience to get a race?
It's ok, we're hiring Lukeh to re-design the tracks ;)
I stand by my 10 year plan though - if a country hasn't pulled some sort of audience or junior drivers after 10 years with a GP, then pull it off the calender.
The only exception of course, would be Spain which needed some guy called Fernando to boost it.
Imola was redesigned and reopened for late 2008 - much better now
I agree with your sentiments but we don't live in Bernie World. He does
Excellent, im happy to accept the role of Anti-Tilke
That's anti, not aunty.
i say don't let them on without guarantees and throw them off if they fail.
I do think they are doing it the wrong way, yes. Their argument is that F1 will attract more people to racing and kickstart the motorsport culture. I don't agree with that - I think something like WTCC or GTs or anything else should go to places that F1 doesn't go, and build up a core audience. Then F1 can go.
Hey Lukeh,
Any chance of a return to AVUS then???
Only the front straight.
sounds reasonable, yup.
:D
Avus, nordescheife, my street, you name it.
and the final turns - it was straightened out somewhat
Would that make Steven 'Uncle Low-Aero'?
agreed. but the money for the sport comes from the tv audience, i can't be doing with races on saturday. just race somewhere where motorsport is more popular. {Comment #562}
The money comes from the TV audience, the circuits come from the circuit audience.
F1 needs both. At the moment it's not getting the circuit audience, even at places that used to provide it with one (well, mostly - Britain's still popular!) And it's got to the point where F1 is running out of circuits - there's India and Rome due to arrive, but there are a lot more than two other circuits at risk of falling off the calender in the next three years.
The "race somewhere where motorsport is more popular", on its own, isn't working. F1 has to make its own popularity and if that means making it easier for people to turn up, then that's what it has to do.
It's not even just a question of when in the week to do races - if they had the brains to schedule Turkey at some point other than Turkish finals week (in a country where the bulk of F1 fans are students), they'd have half a chance of a decent audience...
:D
does it though? says who?
the thing is i doubt it would work. there's no grass roots motorsport in these countries. no-one goes karting, and no-one cares.
shouldn't a country have to guarantee an audience to get a race? {Comment #573}
A country should have to guarantee an audience to keep a race, but F1 (and motorsport in general) needs to give itself a chance of getting that audience in those countries.
i should add that i haven't be bothered about empty grandstands this year. maybe i just got used to them. i'd rather grandstands were empty than screwing with the schedule.
I thought the Rome thing was just hot air
Can the average Turkish student afford to go to the race? I genuinely don't know, but the average student in this country would struggle, wouldn't they?
I'm actually welcoming the giant stand at China that advertises rather than lets people sit down. Although I'll be annoyed if buses start advertising when I get on instead of letting me sit down.
Didn't Bernie confim it?
hehe. expo 2010 is soon too. maybe it'll be one number per stand?
Rome's first GP is 2012
And we believe him?
I thought he said 'we're talking about it'
Could be wrong
A quick ping for something written last night that went up while I was out
http://toomuchracing.com/2010/04/05/an-easter-sunday/
so.. is bernie just gonna keep adding races to the calender till we don't have an off season? i'm probably the only one to think this but having at least one new race per season seems stupid... (specially when the tracks create dull races) what's wrong with having one season full of exactly the same races as the last. it's not like we're going to get bored.
Where/when was that confirmed?
I'm seeing a lot of if's and maybe's
I'm sure he has a bowl of possible cities/countries and every year he picks one out. I bet South Korea was a bit of a toughie.
Cmooooooooon Cardiff.
Pencilled in for July I believe - rumour has it Turkey might get the chop
i agree.
although i am bored to tears.

We need to find Mr C's GP Mojo :D
The "race somewhere where motorsport is more popular", on its own, isn't working. F1 has to make its own popularity and if that means making it easier for people to turn up, then that's what it has to do.
does it though? says who? {Comment #590}
If "race somewhere where motorsport is more popular" was working, we wouldn't be seeing circuit audiences drop nearly everywhere, only in a certain proportion of the calender (the "less popular" bit). The places which didn't see a decrease last year were Britain (which once again managed a sell-out) and Abu Dhabi (which not only had no previous audience, but had a relatively easy limit of 50,000 spectators). There are places in the world where F1 is seeping more into the popular culture in a positive way and even a few places (including Britain) where the TV audience is up. Basically, 30 million people (or possibly 30 million divided by 17) are saying this with their remote control fingers.
Once that is accepted, the premise that F1 has to make its own popularity is completely logical. "Making it easier for people to turn up" is a theory at the moment, but you can't make popularity by leaving things as they are or reflexively going back to the old ways without figuring out which of those ways had the popularity-increasing effect and which, if any, of the effective old ways can be re-integrated into F1. New theories may be part of the solution - emphasis, at the moment, on may ;)
am pinning my hopes on bernie's earlier comments.
Whilst agree that racing AND entertainment need to improve
I don't like relying on Bernie
better to know that china will be a boring GP, than build up a race to be absolutely amazing and new only to be faced with almost 2 hours of boredom with only a multicoloured building for entertainment ;)
#notbitter
ooooo!!! thank you!
I've heard him talk about it and I've seen a map, but nothing 100% official.
They did say a good hotel, in abu dhabi's defence.
...that was the point of the event, right?
I thought the Rome thing was just hot air {Comment #593}
I think it's Bernie being desperate to have any circuits to replace ones that fall off the calender, judging by the low numbers of rumours concerning new F1-grade circuits and the point that Canada has saved millions of dollars per year by skipping a year of racing. When was the last time Bernie commanded less money the second time he negotiated with a circuit?
I expect to see Rome make the calender at some point in the next decade (maybe not 2012, partly because there's an election due in the interim, but Rome's road layout will still exist in a few years' time) as and when Bernie runs out of options.
Working a lot of weekends in the first part of the calendar this year, I've booked quite a few Sunday's off
I haven't bothered for Valencia :)
True story
we're off to record debrief, will have to carry on discussion later. suffice to say when people request better "racing" the entertainment has only ever decreased.
i'm beginning to fall out with people who insist no-refuelling = better racing. it just makes sundays cr*p.
right now, i'll take reverse-grids, success ballast, anything you like, just make the race not suck. please.
*shrugs* must have been ;)
Catch'ya later Mr C
or rather no-refuelling = "pure" racing. i don't think better comes into it.
I'll take better over pure, anyday
I've heard him talk about it and I've seen a map, but nothing 100% official. {Comment #614}
I think GMM said it was confirmed back in early March subject to payment (cue multitudes of wierd/dismayed expressions from my fellow commenters). Note that payment isn't due until after Italy's next election, so if a party other than the one currently in power in the relevant part of Rome wins, it's possible the opposition might try to get out of the agreement by not paying, depending on their stance concerning the race.
ausi was fun.. maybe we can just have lots of wet ausi races while they fix it?.. i don't like the idea of a reverse grid, but i agree that something needs to be done sooner rather than later.
have a nice time recording mr c! can't wait to hear the outtakes ;)
Ah, thought you'd done it before asking for voicemails yesterday :)
I noticed on Twitter yesterday.
I'll accept the compulsory 2 stops if that's what works - until they fix the cars.
we're off to record debrief, will have to carry on discussion later. suffice to say when people request better "racing" the entertainment has only ever decreased. {Comment #618}
Because the FIA are clueless as to what "racing" is. They don't listen to any of us, whatever take we have on the matter...
I'm open to the idea but not sure how that'll impove things?
you'll just get more overtaking via the pits right?
Oh :(
I don't see how that'll work though - surely everyone will be in at the same time.
Some nice pics there
It puts people on fresher rubber for longer, and if they say you can make the stops when you like, you could have Fernando make both stops before Jenson makes his first, and therefore not really know who'll win between the two.
Or generally more position changes in the pits, which is what some people apparently like.
Weaving in F1 is ridiculous. I know it happens at other levels but if someone tried that in the local FFord championship they would be penalised. {Comment #111}
Someone tried it at the karting I went to this afternoon. Ended up crashing into the kart just behind with the weaver's kart going halfway up the barrier (the driver, I hasten to add, was OK but opted against further running)
But doesn't it reduce a team's flexibilty and increase the 'we'll wait for the pit stop' syndrome?
Anyway I'm getting tired of all the negativity floating around. On my voicemail and on my blog I said this race wasn't really any more boring or any less boring than your average dry race at a Tilke track and I genuinely believe that.
Am with you there
It could have been better towards the end but I enjoyed it
I'd agree with that, I didn't have any qualms with the Malaysian GP
IMO yes. It makes it like a DTM race and DTM races are boring.
Before DC :)
[Panel beaters are gonna be busy next year]
Heheh :) And it's this year I think, the series doesn't start for a bit (I need to add a calendar actually).
Yes, good feel good factor watching the build up and launch on a bank holiday. Telling a mate of mine on the phone about it as it happened. He has not got the internet and was dead jealous. This just might change his luddite ways and get him to hook up, ha ha!.
is he living in 1998? {Comment #150}
12% of people in the UK don't have an internet connection - of whom 2/3 don't have one. In fact 4% of people in the UK have had the internet and then dropped the internet connection from their computer (and not re-enabled it on any format since)...
I was generally told to shut up whining yesterday, so I'm taking the good ol' line, "if you can't say anything positive..."
I think healthy discussion is warranted though and can understand the frustration on both sides
i think what worries me is that atm we're relying on other things to spice up the action.
Bahrain = dry race = dull
Australia = wet race + good track = brilliant race
Malaysia = wet quali and silly top teams = much overtaking and good race.
What happens if it doesn't rain, and the teams are on the ball for the rest of quali sessions + races?... Without Alonso, Massa, JB, and Hamilton at the back of the grid we would have had a Bahrainesque race for alot of the time. That worries me. i'm probably over reacting
I'm like Murray Walker here - EVERYTHING IS INNNNNCREDIBLE!!
:D
No one wants a season like that
Maybe the big wigs are worried enough to react in a sensible way
I need to add something to this: they are boring, the question is are they more boring or less boring than what we have in F1 right now, and that's something I don't know the answer to. I suspect two stops may help under the right conditions. They ruined it in DTM by introducing pit windows.
I do think people are over-reacting. We've had a sample of 1 test race, 1 wet race, and one average race.
@f1photos told me yesterday that although the locals liked the race, f1 people weren't as pleased with it. So they're definitely taking note. as you say lets hope a sensible solution can be found.
Maybe it's in response to the major anticipation that this was gonna be an awesome year, with 4 fast teams, more champions in seats, blah, blah, blah
How many until we aren't over-reacting then?
This is the question. We already know China and Spain are pretty rubbish as it is. I imagine they'll still be pretty rubbish.
I do think these rules would've worked better with a diffuser ban etc, but we're stuck without that so if the only way to fix it is a 2nd stop then let's try it.
There was lots of local Lotus hype though
To introduce that for this year, wouldn't they need ALL teams to agree?
How will that happen?
2 or 3 dry races.
Sadly, too many
It won't.
wait till the moment it's too late to do anything... then we aren't over-reacting ;)
2 or 3 more? We've seen two already.
There is that..
Some say we've only seen one
Malaysia seems devisive
2 or 3 in total perhaps. I discounted Bahrain because I really don't think they were trying, either due to the heat or exploring the rules in competition.
I agree
This means there's little chance of an entertaining race until the end of May: Turkey
.
.
Possibly
problem is... if we turn round in a few races and say, f1 is in trouble, non refuelling etc doesn't work people can still turn round and say 'well china and spain are always boring so there has been no change'... there will always be a counter argument which means we are over reacting.
Fair enough. You let me know :)
But Turkey is never entertaining?
Hence the 'possibly' ;)
Wasn't the first one?
Turkey had loads of overtaking last year though! Like when Jenson got past vettel on lap 1 and...
...a...
.....hmm. Well, that was it.
so we're looking at Canada then.. failing that Silverstone?..
That's perhaps the most frustrating part of any big rule change. We won't see the real effect until it is too late because of the bad calendar. Then there's my opinion it takes a few months before the teams/drivers get the handle of what they can do with the rules.
Not a clue, can't remember all the way back then ;)
I forgot about Monaco
That can be hit or miss
I might be slightly clinging to the belief it'll turn out okay with crossed fingers, rather than being totally adamant :)
but is that cause of pitstops though? seeing as that's when most of the overtaking happens?
Canada will be good. Silverstone will be good. Hockenheim... maybe. Valencia ugh. Hungary? Spa and Monza may be alright.
Stand and deliver... overtaking
Ooh Canada, thats a bit like Australia in reality.
I understand. Like I said, I'm all about the positives now. However, I do think that you can keep on discounting races for a myriad of reasons, and suddenly we're at Abu Dhabi and it was a rubbish season but we still aren't allowed to over-react.
Both will be awesome
Amy & I say so, it will happen ;)
:)
Silverstone and Spa last year I'd say were as good as Malaysia this year.
Funny accents you mean?
:D
Delicious-watch? ;)
Yes you can.. but last year was mostly a rubbish season for on-track racing and was only good because of the participants, the story and the points battle. I think that shouldn't be forgotten in a like-for-like comparison of the racing.
Ride height isn't measured by scrutineers. The only thing they would notice is if the rear wing etc was too high {Comment #351}
Unless the team was stupid enough to run it so low it wore away too much of the plank underneath the car.
That sounds as silly as not having enough fuel to get to the ... oh
Here's a nice Plus piece by Tony Dodgins:
http://www.autosport.com/features/article.php/id/2726
Various different things about qualifying are covered, the bit I like is Sam Michael at Williams talking about Rubens.
"The season is still early but Rubens is one of the best drivers I've ever worked with. He's got such a big database and for every two camber change tests that Nico's done, Rubens has done 100 of them. He just knows what's important to make the car quick. It's an amazing thing to not have that for a while and then to have it again.
"We took the decision to go with Rubens for those reasons. We thought he'd be good but he's far exceeded our expectations. And that goes for everyone in the team – Frank, Patrick, Adam (Parr) and myself. The guy is on a really special level. The thing that's surprised us most is that we think, how's this guy not been a multiple world champion? He's better than guys we know who are champions."
Rubens is a world champion to me :)
Hi everyone. I have a quick question for you all - during free practice 1 we were noticing the little yellow thing on the side mirrors on the lotus. did anyone ever find out what it was?
Cameras?
And
Hi Scott :)
Perhaps. My memory doesn't stretch very far at all, but I don't remember being that bored on a Sunday before... apart from Abu Dhabi. BUT to say something positive about it, it meant my Digest took less time.
for a moment there I was wondering why you mentioned Jenson... deary me...
I was hoping somebody got a definitive answer :) But thanks ;) and Hi ;)
Heheh.
:) Can we just remove the back wings entirely? would that help?
Try tweeting Gasgoyne?
Abu Dhabi. Valencia. China. Spain. Anyway I'm bored and I'm going to do something else.
I think F1 wolf sent a tweet but I'm not on twitter. I don't do any work - I just outsource it all :)
And use big flags for sponsor logos
Clever man :D
Charming!
Anyway
What was the best Easter Egg eaten over the weekend?
I've never been bored by the Chinese GP (after it has started)
Sorry but this has wound me up a bit and I'm better off elsewhere
In fairness, the last two years have been wet races.
I found a really amusing easter egg in a game last night, if that counts. As in a funny little thing the devs included rather than an actual easter egg but it still made me laugh. :)
Oh the chocolate variety, I have yet to open mine yet as I've been too busy doing uni stuffs!
Was it the excitement in the Fantasy Racers price changes? ;)
those big wings are probably what keeps the teams (financially) afloat.
Raally, really big flags then
Traditionally, McLaren do well at Monaco
but there pace is coming from the f-duct {Comment #437}
And not enough of it to beat a Force India, apparently. Tradition probably won't be happening this year unless the Barcelona improvement is spectacular (then again, we're talking McLaren here - that's entirely possible!)
i didn't get any easter eggs :)
No I really mean that. I like the Chinese GP. It's my version of Nick's Abu Dhabi delusion :)
Has anyone ever made an easter egg of an actual easter egg?
Twirl. Oooh. Nice.
Yep, Grand Theft Auto Vice City has an easter egg easter egg.
I was going to buy one for myself but I over indulged a little on holiday and thought better of it
Oh. Clearly gonna have to work on my positiveness.
Anyways, I know when I'm not wanted. Gotta a show to be doing.
See? :)
Perhaps. My memory doesn't stretch very far at all, but I don't remember being that bored on a Sunday before... apart from Abu Dhabi. BUT to say something positive about it, it meant my Digest took less time. {Comment #694}
I've been that bored several times (actually Malaysia 2010's a bad example because I found it exciting, but Bahrain was only as boring as, say, Spain 1999 - or Spain 1998 until I realised I'd become a Jordan supporter part-way through the race).
Hi guys
Just back from Jordan. Had the most terrific time and Kimi did brilliantly on really really tough terrain....
It was funny to see Jean Todt give him his presentation and give him a hug....
If you are interested I'll do a "guest post" as soon as I can...
Yep, that's the spirit
*sidepodhug* have fun :)
That'd be great!
What was the best Easter Egg eaten over the weekend?
i didn't get any easter eggs :) {Comment #714}
Me neither. Just a Quality Street (which was a late birthday present)
And
Hi
[Where are my manners tonight?]
Too busy thinking about easter eggs :)
Did everyone see Jackie's tweet yesterday:
Look what Mark Webber has been doing in his spare time! http://tinyurl.com/yd9pf7l .. will be a while till he lives this down.
Probably
Chocolate deprivation is bad for the soul
i'm the kinda person whose perfectly happy without chocolate :) we've never ever done the easter egg thing in my family... we used to (and the younger members still do) make little gifts for each other. My cousin decorated a note pad for me this year with f1 paper clippings she'd collected over a few months :) she's very sweet :)
hey :)
Well, there goes my easter egg hunger. I'm not quite sure what I just witnessed.
Absolutely!
Heya Lady Snowcat. Good to see Kimi off the mark then?
I thought he was actually going to crash into them. Like he usually does.
It's too surreal for words
Apart from those, of course
Absolutely...
He was pretty relaxed and happy....
Just caught up on comments... People were looking for an entry list for the Le Mans Series race this weekend:
http://www.pla...castellet-entry-list/
Yaay, Rob Bell.
Didn't realise Fisichella was doing it. {Comment #507}
That's why I'm following LMS now :) I've done part 1 of a primer (part 2 coming this week now I know who most of the drivers will be) and a three-part testing report for those people who are about to start following Le Mans Series (by a newbie viewer for other newbie viewers).
Now I know why the cows want their milk back
YouTube comment:
someone remix this.
NOW
Thanks Christine...
I could write loads but don't worry I'll try to distill it into a reasonable length and give you all a flavour of Jordan...
Ooooh, sounds good. Thanks Alia :)
Ace!
awww no Davidson :( {Comment #508}
He's doing the American version, the ALMS, and some of the dates clash (the ACO get a little uppity about that these days). Yes, it's confusing, this sports car stuff...
Ooooh, sounds good. Thanks Alia :) {Comment #745}
You're welcome :)
Why on earth do they still have the GT1 class. What a joke. {Comment #509}
I'm not 100% sure. It helps make the GT2 designation still make sense (because it was billed as being the lesser-powered version of GT1) and because the FIA still runs GT1 cars in its own series (but not, for some reason, GT2). It may make more sense if I say 5 GT1 cars turned up for the test last month. Wonder what happened to the other 4...
I am surprised so many teams have three drivers for an 8 hour race {Comment #512}
I understand a fair few plan to have three drivers for the six-hour races later on, so it would make sense for them to have three drivers to do eight hours. Even if two drivers could make the distance just fine.
Right, we're all done now.
Who else can I bore?
too late.
I'm already bored. And at work!
Yay for podcasts!
:D
am already bored.
Oi!
Jailbroken iPad news?
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/05/the-ipad-has-been-jailbroken/
that seemed really quick... however i have no sense of time, i just turned round to look out of the window thinking it was about 4pm to find it was dark outside.. i'm totally confused.
I may have been commenting during the recording process. Don't tell Mr C.
Evening all. Just had a mindblowing experience - reading the daily post.
I've had a pretty quiet day today, not been feeling 100%. The only phone call I've had all day was a call centre wanting the previous owner of the house :(
I did get an obscene amount of chocolate for my birthday present, it seems the children took advantage of the fact that today is Easter Monday and insisted on buying me nice chocolate.
ahhhh :) multitasking is awesome :)
#confidential
I've heard of this multitasking. One day I hope to learn such talents.
Happy Birthday!!
Cool
Hi Andy
Happy Burpday
maybe the iPad and iPhone will learn it too!
:) Happy birthday mate
hehehehe
Apparently women can multitask - to test this, ask one to make you a bacon sandwich while they iron your shirts. They always walk off in disgust.
"make me a sandwich"
"no"
"sudo make me a sandwich"
"OK!"
Simple, its not the old GT1 class, its new FIA GT1, the cars will eventually turn up in ACO motorsport but at the moment is just FIA stuff they are doing
In other news, the iPad blends.
Evening all
ahhh but as we're walking away it's possible we are muttering under our breath. That counts as multi tasking ;)
Hi Jon
Trying to break the comments again?
What did i do?
I clicked on a quote twice?
I saw that earlier
I don't get folk who do stuff like that
I guess they get pleasure from winding the fan boi's up
blends?
hey
As in, inside a blender
Blast.

In a blender

hahahaha, why would you do that :D
love it
Right, we're all done now.
Who else can I bore? {Comment #751}
You can bore me if you like. I like it when you bore me because, if I'm being honest, I find it very interesting ;)
O.O...
He wanted a smoothie with a hint of apple
they pretty much blend everything.
I seem to remember people smashing a PS3 to bits in front of a queue of folk waiting to buy one
Selling the video or ad revenue, can't remember
oh yeah i know, jsut not sure why you'd spend $500 doing it, very funny though!
I've had a pretty quiet day today, not been feeling 100%. {Comment #759}
Oh no! Hope you feel better soon.
ha.
there are no words.....
There are
I wouldn't do that if I had one right now :(
I have a word:
"Awesome"
;)
They did the iPhone too. And the 3G(S).
but... it's such a waste :(
And the zune... hopefully ;)
Sells a lot of blenders though. I would at least use one that was already broken.
Remember this photo from Silverstone 2 weeks ago? http://twitpic.com/1amgbq
This is what happens when you leave it like that...
http://www.supercarchallenge.nl/userimages//Image/nieuwsafbeeldingen/10silverstone/100403_Race2_GT-SSI4.jpg
Thats how I park on my videogames!
Took 20 minutes to clear, i knew something like that would happen when i saw it
I only watched the race today. I'm surprised to see comments on my page that you all thought the race was boring. Are you impossible to please?? What was wrong with it?
whats "your page"?
I thought it was good!
I didn't think it was boring. I thought it was really interesting.
I didn't think it was boring at all, just fairly average. Not the best ever but not the worst either.
I didn't think the race was boring. Not as good as Australia last week, but far better than.... errr... that first race of the season.
I gave it a B-! If I were at school and I got that, I'd be preeeeeettty pleased. Good work, malaysia!
I opened the comments earlier then got distracted. I read comments from maybe the last 90 minutes.....
I really enjoyed watching it :D
Thats not hard though :P
I want to see a normal race and judge from that
ahhh
me too!
I can't tell you properly, I refreshed it :P
Interesting space photo
http://twitpic.com/1dfw9y
:o!!
i wonder how much it would cost for me to go see the aurora borealis myself... (from the earth.. not space)
Wow!
lots! plus you aren't guarenteed to see it if you go to the area
Why lots?
Relatively speaking, of course
It's a once in a lifetime moment
I'm completely going on holiday to Norway sometime. Sleep outside and stare at it. It is Norway you can see it right?
True, i guess its all relative, for what it is, i guess its the right price....
It can cost a lot because you really need to go a long way north to get the full experience. You can see it from Aberdeen but you need to go way north of Finland where it is really cold and there are no trains, buses, roads etc
it's on my life wish list... i have to see them once... i may have to go live in the middle of no where... probably in canada cause i could make the effort to get to the GP too.. ;)
Probably Iceland too
Going to cold places is always an expensive holiday though. There are a lot fewer alternative accommodation options so it pushes up the price of everything.
well, if you live far enough north you can see them a lot :)
True. TV crews have been known to sit about for weeks waiting for it.
You can see them in Scotland sometimes. Very rarely though.
northan hemisphere near the north magnetic pole. to it's north of the Scandinavian countries and in north Canada...i think..
Anywhere close to the north pole or south pole
You will get some good photos
i'd happily go live in iceland for a few years tbh... infact i'd probably never come back...
Alaska, as well, but I think you're closer to Norway or Iceland, right?
Yeah much!!
Aurora Australis, isn't it
Iceland seems like a really interesting place but it is really expensive
Which'd probably be an Antarctic thing only :(
Yes
Scandinavia is lovely though. I approve. Except for Stockholm. I hated that. I think I should start a campaign for a Scandinavian GP then Nick might take me. I'm sure Amy would sign my petition.
Pretty much
What's up with Stockholm?
wiki says
'Its southern counterpart, the aurora australis or the southern polar lights, has similar properties, but is only visible from high southern latitudes in Antarctica, South America, or Australasia. '
They used to have a Swedish GP at Anderstorp
As long as its Norway. I can get to there easier than Silverstone.
ggaaaahhh!! one eye has been watering for 2 days now... it's starting to get annoying. :s
You can also get the same thing on other planets and the north and south versions happen at exactly the same time
Starting?
Have you seen a Doc yet?
Everyone I met was really really grumpy! I'd got the seacat over from Denmark. Compared to cheery Danes it was a real shock to the system. The whole place seemed really grey. I decided if I lived there, I'd be grumpy too. Gavin assures me you can drive across now though. Maybe the cheerfulness has seeped across.
If I'm going to go somewhere that's colder than, well, really cold, I'm gonna keep it in the family (so to speak) and go to Alaska.
Was it winter
S.A.D.?
it's only been gradually watering.. it's very odd...
nope, not been to a doctor yet. However i've not been dizzy today, and my eyes aren't as puffy, i'll be fine. :)
Alas twas the height of summer :D
I met some Swedes from Malmo, they were very happy
I don't have a vendetta against Swedish people. I just think of all the places there are in the world, I'm unlikely to go back to Stockholm. I thought it was horrid.
Seems entirely reasonable
I'll probably never go back to Lisbon for similar reasons but I know quite a few people who have loved it
I'm surprised to see comments on my page that you all thought the race was boring. Are you impossible to please?? What was wrong with it? {Comment #804}
I enjoyed it :)
It's not just Earth that has aurorae. This is Jupiter
http://www.freewebs.com/starsurf/images/jupiter_aurora.jpg
http://yunol.stes.tc.edu.tw/images/jupiteraurora.jpg
I think that's too far for a holiday.... :(
Bassano, did we decide Monday night was good? My memory is awful.
have you been watching that wonders of the solar system programme? there was a section on the aurorae :)
I'd never get the leave to do a round trip
There is a slight lack of land to stand on. It's gas for a long way down
Yes, we did :)
Yes. I've seen in both in Norway and near Oulu in Finland (which you can reach by car, bus and train)
hehe
I would think any planet with a magnetic field would have Aurorae. Not sure which other planets have magnetic fields, though.
speaking of meetups... anyone know where we are meeting on wednesday?
I have seen every episode and plugged a few on here. I have seen a few things on aurorae on different planets.
Ask Gavin, didn't he instigate it?
Finland just gets better and better
erm...not sure... i think so... ah it's okay lukeh and i will wonder round london, we'll find the others eventually ;)
Hello All!
Very quick visit just to ask if the iPhone OS 4.0 event has been mentioned?
Looks like it's late Thursday for those in the uk
All of them do. Uranus is the only od one because a long time ago something really big hit it and knocked it over. So instead of its north and south poles being on top and bottom like the rest of the planets they are horizontal
Aye, I found it earlier and Mr C tweeted about it I think
There are some planets that don't have aurorae because they don't have atmospheres like Mercury
How's iPad fever down there Jeremy?
I'm not around on Wednesday but anyone is also welcome to join Bassano and I next Monday. If you want to know what we're doing, ask someone else, I'm useless :P
The China GP of the Solar System?
boo for sleep then :P
I'd better get ready for work. Have fun peeps! :-)
Yes except there is a bit more temperature difference between day and night. Something like 400C
I cannot wait! :-)
my friend Anthony went to New York and should be landing soon with 19 of them!
Wow!
He got a lot of help then
2 per customer
i'm free next monday (if i'm well)... i think...i'll happily pop up to london for a few hours..
Cool
Details nearer the time
him and a mate, 4 stores in new york, plus a few at best buy. He would have bought more if he hadn't lost his wallet.
www.mactalk.com.au
Nick is also coming. I haven't worked out how to get rid of him yet :P
haahah :D
I hope customs is a smooth transition for him
One of them for you hopefully
I'll be in town next Monday :)
Hey guys, just here quickly.
Are we on or off for the pub meetup then?
I can DM my mobile number to you
on twitter?
heya, i think it's still on?.. Lukeh and I will be around... i think mr and mrs c are coming, and giggles? not sure where though?
no. I want the 3G version which arrives here sometime late April or early May. I want to be one of the first (I have one of the first batch of original iPods still going strong) but it has to be the right model.
I was bloody tempted though. I hope someone at head office has one for me to play with but I doubt we will see one for a month :-(
the guys that went to new York had orders for more than they could possibly get. Lucky he has several credit cards with high limits
Er yeah
urgh, need more sleep!
Right, so what's happening then? I checked the wiki page earlier and nothing had changed...
Hi Amy :)
erm.... mr c said something about meeting in a pub around 7pm..ish.... no idea where, i think he said he'd leave that to giggles.
GIGGLESSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
but the sun is up and it's going to be a beautiful day!
I can only assume that the daylight savings change means you stay up even later now?
everyone should buy you birthday drinks then. Happy B'Day dude!
Which day is this?
Really have to get ready for work now. Byes!
wednesday.
I got 3 hours sleep. Stupid daylight saving.
Thanks mate - news from this end is I will soon have a new job title :D
:(
Oooooh yes!
Despite Mr C's best efforts, I still have managed to avoid absorbing information from the daily :D
I've got my timing results out of the folder and realised I haven't improved by two seconds after all - only by a more modest 0.022 seconds. Silly me for mis-remembering - and Dad kept telling me I was a lot faster than before* :(
* - In reality I was much more consistent (my average time was 0.7 seconds quicker from before) but not visibly faster.
Weds 7th or 14th?
7th? (this wednesday coming)
Morning
Bye
OK so I'm keen to go still. I have seen that the train strike got called off too. Can someone please tell me where it will be somehow?
The extra hour would have made all the difference
Bah. If it were next week I'd be in London anyway
if you can DM me your mobile number or something on twitter when it's decided i'll text you the info.
You will probably find as you get more consistent the next time you go you will get faster. You need to be consistent to find speed
Will do. I'll also let Christine know in an email and send it to Bassano and Alex...
okay :)
You will probably find as you get more consistent the next time you go you will get faster. You need to be consistent to find speed {Comment #19}
Thank you for the advice. It was just strange that I was getting one message from spectators and another from the timing sheets...
Sometimes you can look a lot faster or slower than you really are. It can be very deceptive so you have trust the stopwatch. I read something last week by Nigel Roebuck where he was talking about watching Monaco qualifying with Dennis Jenkinson. They saw Prost go through a corner visibly slower than everyone else and assumed he was just doing installation laps. THe circuit commentator then announced that he had just done the fastest lap of the session.
Two experienced people who stood at the side of tracks all the time and they got it completely wrong.
Awesome. I'll be off now then, so I look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday ;)
see ya!

:O I see what you mean now...
Especially with Karting, its all about technique rather than "speed"
Hi guys.
Woohoo! Financial diet = major success!! :D
My bank statement makes me very happy :D
Hey TM
Especially with Karting, its all about technique rather than "speed" {Comment #927}
Sorry, I'm not sure I understand that. Please could you explain?
What's this I read about Wednesday? I'm yet to ask my bosses for the time off. Wasn't gonna do it since the train strike was on before Easter, but now that's off I have to smile. :)
Karting is all about feel, about how you use your grid, just because you're going faster into a corner dosen't mean you're going to be getting the lap times down
Brain a little frazzled this evening thanks to a rather strong local beer and no glasses.
All I need now is to "win and pay off your overdraft".....
A likely story!
Grid? I mean grip

Karting is all about feel, about how you use your grid, just because you're going faster into a corner dosen't mean you're going to be getting the lap times down {Comment #933}
I think I'm becoming familiar with the last one of those. Still getting used to how the grip changes at this circuit and as for "feel"... ...the best I can say about that is one of my feet got pins and needles towards the end of the day. I don't think that's the sort of "feel" you meant though (mostly I end up driving with my ears rather than my skin nerves).
The one thing they never tell you.
Drive with your bum and your hands :P
It's where you feel the grip
I did that with my paycheck this month. Feels good. :)
Grid? I mean grip {Comment #936}
Understood - though given that I stalled at the start of my first run today, I probably need to work on my grid as well as my grip ;)
yes!! :)
You stalled? Aren't you in A&D karts?
Good Morning Sunshine. :)
If I'm well behaved like I have been it might be gone by Spa. Obviously that wouldn't include an actual trip to Spa :D
The one thing they never tell you.
Drive with your bum and your hands :P
It's where you feel the grip {939}
Except I've been told that by at least three people before and I really, really don't feel the grip through any part of my skin. I just get a bit of vibration that's mostly weather-dependent rather than anything to do with the kart.
If I tell you I am completely dependent on my ears rather than my foot to know when the clutch is biting when I do practise starts in a road car, this may give you a clue as to how bad my "feel" is...
Everyone ís different, whatever works for you :D
I wouldn't like to pay for repairs to your car!!
You stalled? Aren't you in A&D karts? {Comment #943}
Yes. They have to have the brake pedal pressed during the start procedure or else the engine stops. I forgot to do that.
I didn't realise I achieved the motorsport equivalent of burning water...
I wouldn't like to pay for repairs to your car!! {Comment #948}
Luckily that's Dad's department, and since I only get to practise in the kart car park (as it's the only place of private flat space suitable for this sort of task), the car doesn't get all that much damage yet. Though I'll admit to having stalled it a few times despite it being a diesel
I know my clutch is biting when my car tries to move forward but can't because ive still got the handbrake on ;)
Apart from moving off, every gear change for my car from 1st to 2nd and upwards just involves stamp on the clutch and let go, its great
You get used to it :D I was always really nervous when learning but as soon as I was on my own my clutch was absolutely fine. The nerves adds alot to it all
I know my clutch is biting when my car tries to move forward but can't because ive still got the handbrake on ;) {Comment #951}
Thanks for the tip :)
That's how I learnt. I stalled 3 times when I learnt how to drive, all during my first 4 lessons.
I was kinda thinking about burning your clutch out rather than smashing into things. You too Waldock! :P
shhhh. My clutch is great thank you very much
That was I imagine doing when I get behind a wheel. In the wall, in the fence, in the hedge. Every.single.corner.
For now...
:)
I was kinda thinking about burning your clutch out rather than smashing into things. You too Waldock! {Comment #955}
That was also what I meant - it's difficult to actually hit anything in a big empty field. If I'm only getting to do 3 or 4 practise starts a month, then it's not going to do much damage to the car, especially if I figure out how to do some of them correctly.
In a big empty field, depending on the weather, I imagine you'd get very good at doing starts. Eventually.....
Getting the correct revs on up and downshifts mean less wear. so nerrr :P
Sorry I didn't mean to scare you. I'm sure you're not doing any damage. Holding the clutch up too high with the brake on is how you fry them nicely though. It's not a big issue on the flat.
In a big empty field, depending on the weather, I imagine you'd get very good at doing starts. Eventually..... {Comment #961}
Eventually appears to be the operative word, at least in my case...
I'm confused by your strange stamping car... Sounds cruel.
It'll come :) One day it'll just click!
Sorry I didn't mean to scare you. I'm sure you're not doing any damage. Holding the clutch up too high with the brake on is how you fry them nicely though. {Comment #963}
That's OK, you just don't want me to break my only method of getting a lift anywhere :)
Aww, have a hug from me. :)
Not stamp stamping, but once im moving, i can push the clutch in hard and release it pretty fast with little driveline snatch
Get it completely right and you don't need to use the clutch at all unless you have to stop.
But you have a gearstick?
I do have a have stick yes?
you can do clutchless shifts in your car?
Aww, have a hug from me. :) {Comment #968}
That's kind of you, Turkey Machine. You're probably right - it just takes me a while to learn practical stuff like this. Dad reckons the karting is helping me out though...
So why can you change gear just by stamping on your clutch. That was where I started to get confused.
oooh. I mean when i change gear. I still do it normally, just don't use the clutch for long
I had great difficulty with clutch control, pressing the accelerator and raising the clutch at the same time was too difficult for me (see discussion on multitasking earlier on). It took many hours of practice to get it right.
On my driving test I clipped the kerb turning left, went through an amber traffic light and had to be told how to get through a traffic jam on a roundabout by the examiner. I still passed :)
Yep. It's all about matching road speed and engine revs.
Of course, but my car wont come out of gear without the clutch, having forgotten to use the clutch a few times i literally couldnt get it between gears
!!!!!! and i hesitate for a few moments in one of my tests and fail!! wtf!
i should imagine andy took his test a while before you did ;)
#sorryandy
It was 1986. Things have changed a bit since then. It was also the last day of the month, so I may have been part of a "quota".
yes... but it isn't fair. lol
It will if you get the revs exactly right
That probably means the engine speed is too high or low
i shall try again tomorrow but not convinced. surely jamming gears in (Even at right rpm) dosent do the box a great deal of good? (compared to clutch shifting)
It's OK. Accepting I'm 41, that is the scary bit.
And there you were telling me you looked after your car. Stamping and pulling doesn't sound like love. Just you stay away from Alphonso!
I want a Panda :D
My blog entry of my latest karting trip is now complete.
a fiat panda???
You are not jamming them in if the revs are right.
To get it out of gear try lifting of the accelerator and then apply very slight pressure to the gear lever and gradually increase throttle pressure
yaaaa. they look awesome.
i want a 500 more, but a panda is good for the moment
Alphonso is a panda. He's perfect for me! Nearly a year now and he's still rolling. His nose is scratched though. I might try and get someone to fix him as a birthday present.
I want a cheap runabout that's easy on tax and insurance so I can build my no-claims. Recommendations?
http://www.carpages.co.uk/car-insurance/car-insurance-group-1-1.asp
;)
It is possible to drive a manual car without using the clutch. To get started you have to put the engine in first gear then start it up. Put car in neutral and apply brakes to stop.
This second technique also works if your accelerator pedal ever gets stuck down, in fact it works a lot better than calling the police on your mobile phone.
Of course driving without the clutch isn't recommended, but very satisfying when you get it right.
That's great but for £7k I could let a house for 2 years.
Panda!
I got mine brand new for under £5k
thats for them new, they're alot cheaper second hand
Ooooh Oooooh 2CV. Dirt cheap for insurance
And you can easily enter them into a 24 hour race.
okay..
i wanted a 500 too... but then i got my cute little VW fox :)
I heart RG
my VW fox is awesome! plus it has a surprising amount of space in the back for a small car...
Sorry - second gear. Please do not try this at home.
ahh cool :) i keep trying to name my car... but it's almost impossible for me to come up with good names lol
Actually i dont just want a 500, i want one of these...
I moved house using my panda. Everything I own can fit in that car. I'm not sure if that says good things about the car or bad things about my life :P
edwardo?
Don't tempt me, Snetterton's only up the road....
abarth's are awesome! i have a poster of one of those on my wall #blameRoC
It means you don't buy furniture is what you mean :P
I am one of the commentators for that race! Totally come! Its going to be awesome!
Basil - boom boom
When is it this year?
awww
hehehehe no... :P
21-22 aug
don't kill me.. but where is snetterton.. it's one of the many race tracks that ages away from me isn't it?..
That's true. I do have odd bits but I've always rented furnished.
Norfolk, about 10 miles outside of Norwich.
Norfolk, not that far away
Come for Saturday atleast, snetts awesome for taking pics
That's the weekend before Spa, or in my case, Greenbelt.
I'll see. ;)
*adds to calendar of things to do this year*
Come ooooooooooon.
its the best race of the year. fact
And I hear the commentary is fan-tastic.
It's a lot closer to you than me
I have heard that too ;)
:D
And you can take your car right to the edge of the circuit. No leaving it in a car park and getting soaked and hypothermia
All those people down south, have a lovely selection of tracks to choose from.
That's a big hint to say "I'm making plans to do it". ;)
pah. Croft, Knockhill, don't be silly :P
hmmm will see closer to the time, but it would be great to go take pics...
Well, it's probably more exciting than that other 24 hour race. *cough*Peugeot*cough*
:D okay fair enough.
It's true. They have a lot more
You got Knockhill, now that I'd trade for some of the club circuits in this country.
support race has historics i think, they move around lots, great for taking pics
You wouldn't trade Knockhill weather
No, that I'd keep firmly in Scotland.
They should move, Brands, Snett and Knockhill closer to me ;)
i'd love to go, no idea what i'm up to that weekend and how much money i'll have etc i'll put it in the calender, but i'd probably only have to pop in for a bit, i couldn't sleep there
#nocamping
and oulton, and cadwell.
sleep in your car :P
and mallory, and silverstone
and thruxton
Are you mad?? That's flipping freezing!
I'll take one if they're moving.
I'm sleeping in a tent....
I have a house 30 miles away. The dog might need persuading though. :D
Knockhill has its own microclimate. I have been there in June where you can see 360 degrees of blue skies and a huge black cloud above the track. It's really funny watching the English teams when a new class comes up. If it's sunny they are out in shorts and T shirts then you get a massive temperature drop and horizontal rain. That day injune where there were blue skies everywhere it snowed at Knockhill.
umm, you can have cadwell, but they're moving down south, so you'll have to come with
I'm sleeping at home. With luck!
You will have a car
I could tell you stories about a few friends who came to Donington a few years ago in April when it snowed overnight.
Scratch that, I'll have Donington. I'll show em how its done.
A tent is warmer than a car. I'm seriously not kidding.
Why is Brands not on your list?
can you at least leave me with Lyddenhill if you're going to take the race tracks that are on my doorstep away from me?
okay... i'll put this another way... i like to sleep indoors, in a nice bed with protection from the weather :)
It is, scroll down ;)
A car has an engine and a heater. Car wins
Except when there's freezing gales.
*camped for 10 years in varied weather*
you can have lydden hill, i get the rest
Not when petrol is £1.20 a litre it doesn't!
hehehe i know, and i'll drive up there, but a 2 1/2 hour drive up there a day shooting and a 2 1/2 hour drive back may cost a bit.. and it's the weekend before Spa.. so who knows. :)
OK then Castle Combe and Goodwood
A tent is warmer than a car. I'm seriously not kidding. {Comment #1058}
Cars have better soundproofing...
i thought id be nice and leave some others for you guys :P
Cheaper to run the engine for 15 minutes an hour than buying a tent
oi! no one it taking brands... it belongs down south... near me...
I do like how you don't say Croft. Cheers.
ah no, sleeping in a tent (which is in hte middle of a circuit) with ear defenders has better soundproofing ;) )
i can believe that.
You can have that :)
Gee thanks. Those two are so convenient for me
Well you can all sleep in your cars.... All I'd say is that I've camped my whole life and the coldest nights I've ever had have all been when I've slept in the car.
You know I live down south too :P
hmmm... you don't live that far away (not in comparison to Scotland) i could maybe live with them moving slightly...
Put the tent in the car or get a big tent and put the car in it.
Win win
:D
Did you sleep in your sleeping bag too?
just realised.. hehe
:D
Yeah. Except one time in an emergency. I was discounting that though.
My friends one year had to pack up their tents because they were collapsing under the weight of 80mph gales. The car was the better option *then*.
sleeping in a tent (which is in hte middle of a circuit) with ear defenders has better soundproofing {Comment #1074}
How do you pull off that trick? I couldn't figure out how to do it at Silverstone last year...
If tents were so good houses would be made out of canvas
Screwfix earplugs. Can't beat-em.
If houses were as good as tents, they'd be portable. ;)
You just have to sleep flat.
I was doing 4 hour shifts with 3.5 hours sleep in between each of them for 24 hours so i just had to get on with it
Warmer than a car is not saying a lot!
that sounds so tough. sounds silly but would not sleeping actually be better? i know when i wake up from about 3 hours sleep i feel awful, i'm much better if i stay up for as long as needed and then sleep it off later..
Our camper van was pretty warm. Being able to put the gas stove on helped.
How do you pull off that trick? I couldn't figure out how to do it at Silverstone last year...
You just have to sleep flat. {Comment #1092}
That will be why. I can't sleep flat for toffee :D
Airbeds are good like that. Mine usually go flat during the night so I don't notice!!!
Up to about 3 or 4 thats fine because tahts when i usually slepe, but ive already done 6-8 hours of walking so sleep is what will get me through
ahh cool :)
I did sleep for a day afterwards though :D
This year im going to have to stay overnight on sunday too so i get the sleep so i can drive home.
that's where we differ, i'd book myself into a hotel for the night and get a proper nights sleep before i drive home (cause i can't really sleep in tents)
It's just like sleeping indoors...kinda.
I don't get cold in tents, lots of layers.
I've decided my parents have done me a big favour by exposing me to camping early in life. I am now hard to phase. Holidaying is like 1/5th of the price!
Good gods, you and I had the same upbringing!!!!
for bronze D of E i slept in a tent twice (having walked about 10miles that day) on two occasions. On both of these occations i had loads of layers, a nice warm sleeping bag and still got cold/had no sleep. needless to say i didn't like the camping part of the expeditions. I can put up a tent easily, just let me sleep inside :)
Er, call to arms! Pending my actually getting holiday booked from work for Sidepodpub meetup, can I please have a sofa to crash on overnight?
You need to get a better tent. Either that or share!
Sharing's good for tents. More people the better. Extra people = extra warmth.
we were supplied with the tents... and there were 5 of us in a 4 man tent... we were all freezing, that's what happens when you're forced to do you D of E in early May though..
Is it still Easter?
I have to go to work in 7.5 hours, so no. :P
Hi BTW. :D
No new daily yet so still Easter
If you have chocolate left....yes
ahhh bugger
was there supposed to be a meet up this week?
It is until the new daily comes up ;)
Then it's not
don't worry - just in from pub
Mine is all gone :( I do have another day off though!
Language! And yes, there was. Wednesday's the plan, Lou's the lady organising things AFAICT.
Trade you the day off for the stash of chocolate I have left.
i left my chocolate in Ireland
:(
sorry sir
star trek animated is on you tube - perfect for a bank holiday monday
:)
I'll pass. I've got a haircut booked #sorrynick
You have booked Nick in for a haircut?
#sorrynick?
Did you guys miss that conversation?
Nick banned me from getting a haircut but errrrm I'm kinda assuming he just won't notice :P #confidential
noooo i'm not organising things... am i? i'm awful when i have to organise.. i just want giggles to tell us where to meet and we'll meet... lol
He banned you? That is just an excuse because men never notice a hair do so if you don't get your hair done he won't get in trouble for not noticing.
OI! I notice when my girlfriend gets her cut!
Best of luck with that ;)
He just wants me to grow it. It is already very long though! I have shockingly curly hair. Like ringlets. It's reached a length where it's truly unmanageable!
It'll be much nicer when it's shorter! There'll be no complaining....
apart from by him....who will be complaining when you get it cut...
@lou sorry for name-dropping you! twitter appears to be the medium for communication, although worryingly i have bassanos number. if anything gets firmer re place / time i can book travel and maybe hotel then.
What he doesn't know can't hurt him! :P
Bassano isn't going I don't think.
You know he reads SPC and you know we're all really bad at keeping secrets....
he wants you to have hair like Rapunzel?
He shouldn't get control of your hair when he refuses to live in the same country
Apologies for the rubbish commenting guys, had internet go off so switched to mobile doohickey temporarily. now heading to sleep. night all!
heheh tis okay, i just suddenly paniced.. ask lukeh, but when i'm in charge of organising things i can get a little ocd about it ;)
Night
Night mate :)
night TM
Night TM
I think that might have been the exact example used..... Is it wrong that this makes me tempted to get a bob?
night!
hehehe nooo! go for it :) has to have the right to choose her haircut ;) bobs are pretty cool, i had one a few years ago. i need a new haircut actually..
Hah I don't really want it that short, it would all stick up comically. I just don't think he realises how messy hair gets if you don't trim it though....
you should make him grow his hair long :P
oooh you should totally do that
Eurgh! He needs no encouragement!
:D
Trading in a Nick for a Bob could be a good idea ;)
Boy-long is still far removed from my hair which, as I said, is curly and over 60cm long :P
Who's bob? He sounds nice
Years of supporting BMW just made me think of trading Nick Heidfeld for Bob Kubica.
i don't mean boy long... i mean loong long ;) then he'd get an idea :P
I realy wish I had a witty answer ready but the only Bob I can think of says champaaaaaaaaage a lot. On the plus side he gets to go to every race
He'd probably just ask me to wash it for him.
oooh Alison and champagne bob. that would be cool
hehehe really? hehe
she could come to Spa!! :)
For the record, the answer is always no.
:D
I bet the relationship will fizz out in the end
ooh nice
You think she will cut it short?
Except that one time I did a load of laundry. There is a limit to how dirty a towel can get if you want me to use it :P
Or will they keep bob bing along?
Awwww poor Nick.
Some people have no idea.
Women in the USA walked through a city topless as a protest and were surprised men turned up and took photos. Seriously?
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/7557632/Women-walk-topless-through-US-city-in-protest.html
I'd be insulted if they didn't....
Men are allowed to walk down the street shirtless but, although not illegal, women are too afraid to go topless.
haha
Maybe that's one plus point for the hair - modesty
My friend has been on American TV. LOVE It. He's the scottish dude
Here
Insane. Why would you agree to be part of a mental news report??
Are you telling me if a news guy came and asked you if you wanted to be interviews about pollan you would turn it down?

I thought I would come say hello to the new daily but it appears to be snoozing so hello yesterday!
Now I am worried the UK has sunk and no one told me
Maybe a Zombie invasion?
Oh no, they got Australia too. *barricades door*
Braaaaaaaains
Eeeek!
I think we're still alive :)
I will not be fooled, demon!

I have just received my April F1 Racing and at one point in it they refer to Nico Rosberg as "the Finn"
grrrrrrr.

No new daily post?
Good Morning, one and all.
I drempt I took my ARDS with Jo (my cousin) and passed, I then got caught in London when a large a ount of frenchman were tasering everyone. I ran off and in one of the crowds I met leo and we talked radio and podcasting.
Its fair to say, sleep deprevation has hit
Daily post is up: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/04/06/daily-6th-april-2010/
HAHAHA! Just made me smile, that. :P
Is he wearing a blue shirt too? :D
Morning, folks.
