Happy birthday to a certain Andy Taylor, hope you have a good day and celebrate accordingly. Also, get well soon to Lou, who needs all our Sidepodhugs and best wishes to shake off the flu. Now, parish notices out the way, it's time to talk about Formula One:

  • I have three very different takes on the Malaysian GP for you - starting with Lukeh's fabulous race reviews (I love the scoring and podium graphics). Pat has changed the way he writes up each event, and I really like the more personal approach. Finally, RG has his new team championship standings updated following Malaysia and I'm happy that Lucas di Grassi got some points on the board.
  • We have a fabulous post-race debate ongoing, and would you credit it, it's about Lewis Hamilton. We all saw him weaving around the home straight during yesterday's Grand Prix, but what did you think of it? Was it worthy of a penalty or are people overreacting? Let us know your thoughts.
  • In not really F1 news, it's a Bank Holiday in the UK, and if you have a couple of hours to spare, why not listen to Giggles Radio? Alex hosts a weekly radio show with two hours of fabulous songs, all surrounding one letter of the alphabet. It's great for background music, if you're busy finishing up your Easter Eggs.

That should do it for now. I hope you have had/are having a great weekend and you know how it goes, I'll see you in the comments.

Oh OK - seems I missed the Sunday-Monday crossover. Anyhoo, I shall repeat...

Question for F1 fans everywhere - why is the Bahrain Grand Prix on a Sunday? Would it not make more sense to do it on Saturday?

She used to be a teacher. They have not sent a teacher into space for a very long time because the last one got killed

Most of the comments here were either people saying I see Vettel has proved he can overtake or others saying overtaking at the start doesn't count.

Loved the on board of Lewis's start. Looked like everyone decided to switch to the clean side of the track and leave the dirty side to him.

  • Paul05/04/2010 at 09:33

Most of the comments here were either people saying I see Vettel has proved he can overtake or others saying overtaking at the start doesn't count.

seems o me Mark just didn't cover properly. Maybe he should have weaved a bit more :-)

  • Steven Roy05/04/2010 at 09:36

45 minutes to launch and nothing is happening. Everything is on target for the launch and while the astronauts and launch crew are working through checklists there is nothing much to see.

OH something just happened. There are three trans-Atlantic abort sites which the shuttle will go to if it hits problems early in the flight. The French site at Istres has just been cancelled as an option due to high winds. If they have to land in Europe it will be in Spain.

  • Steven Roy05/04/2010 at 09:37

seems o me Mark just didn't cover properly. Maybe he should have weaved a bit more :-)

He opened the door wide open like he thought he had a significant lead. I guess at the next start everyone can weave all over the place and only get a warning flag

  • Paul05/04/2010 at 09:40

well maybe, but I hope not. I think things have been about right so far, as you said in your other post. Would have been bad if Vettel lost the race for passing under yellows for instance.

you said things were being judged on whether they were dangerous. I think the stewards are doing the right thing this year

  • Steven Roy05/04/2010 at 09:47

you said things were being judged on whether they were dangerous. I think the stewards are doing the right thing this year

I don't think I did. I think the stewards have been far too lenient so far. There have been a few things that should have been dealt with more severely like Lewis weaving and Schumacher ignoring a flag at an earlier race.

I like the idea of drivers as stewards but if they are going to adopt the footballers attitude of letting some things go they should be replaced.

  • Steven Roy05/04/2010 at 09:51

30 minutes till launch and everything still OK. THe launch is going to be spectacular as it is still going to be dark.

  • Paul05/04/2010 at 09:52

hmm ok. I don't agree, but there you go. If this was 2008, Webber would have had a 10 spot grid penalty, Hamilton a drive through and Vettel a 25 second penalty. And I would have thrown something at the TV. I really don't see the problem with a warning to say"don't do that " especially if it is just defensive driving. There is a lot of that sort of thing that happens down the lower places we don't see on tv

  • Paul05/04/2010 at 09:52

30 minutes till launch and everything still OK. THe launch is going to be spectacular as it is still going to be dark.

I think Vettel had a case because he came up on a slow car and it wasn't unreasonable for him to think it was the cause of the yellows. Weaving in F1 is ridiculous. I know it happens at other levels but if someone tried that in the local FFord championship they would be penalised.

  • Steven Roy05/04/2010 at 09:55

NASA TV commentators are hopeless. This guy is just reciting random facts

  • Steven Roy05/04/2010 at 09:57

NASA TV commentators are hopeless. This guy is just reciting random facts

they seem to do that all the time. You would think they could get someone interesting/interested. How do they expect to get people interested in space again?

  • Shaun05/04/2010 at 09:58

you said things were being judged on whether they were dangerous. I think the stewards are doing the right thing this year

    Paul,

I Agree. It's good to see the Stewards using common sense rather than one rule fits all. Last year Alonso, Webber, Vettel and Hamilton would have all got penalties for being racing drivers if they had done what they have done in the last two races this year. This year, so far, has been a refreshing change. One of the reasons could be because they have an ex F1 driver as a steward. Someone who has actually been there and done it.

    S.

  • Steven Roy05/04/2010 at 09:59

they seem to do that all the time. You would think they could get someone interesting/interested. How do they expect to get people interested in space again?

I don't understand NASA. They have a huge government budget but they lauch when the whole of the USA is sleeping and anyone who woke up early is going to be bored to death by the commentators.

The command message encoder problem has cleared and we are now go for launch

  • Paul05/04/2010 at 10:01

The command message encoder problem has cleared and we are now go for launch

phew that's good. I'm sure the NASA tv guy explained all that

  • Steven Roy05/04/2010 at 10:01

20 minutes till launch and everything looking good. No issues being worked.

  • Steven Roy05/04/2010 at 10:03

The two ships that recover the solid rocket boosters are now in position. Talk about leaving it to the last minute

  • Shaun05/04/2010 at 10:04

Ha ha! my TV would have had some Gorge Bush treatment as well Paul, ha ha!

  • Lukeh05/04/2010 at 10:08

    Unbelievable

Somehow, *somehow*, a recent live episode of Eastenders was 2nd or 3rd. This was of tv programmes of all time.

  • Steven Roy05/04/2010 at 10:09

NASA seem to have made a minor adjustment to the launch time. Only a few seconds difference though

    just said -4 here

    Countdown is at one minute

  • Alex Andronov05/04/2010 at 10:22

Most of the comments here were either people saying I see Vettel has proved he can overtake or others saying overtaking at the start doesn't count.

to be fair my comment was a joke about the way people always say he can't overtake despite him clearly being able to.

  • Paul05/04/2010 at 10:24

  • Steven Roy05/04/2010 at 10:28

I wish they would stop the political nonsense but every launch you get someone talking about heading into the future by creating new technology today or similar bull

  • Paul05/04/2010 at 10:28

Looked good. Glad they got past throttle up OK

what is throttle up? Aren't they at max throttle anyway?

  • Steven Roy05/04/2010 at 10:30

what is throttle up? Aren't they at max throttle anyway?

They are at launch but they throttle back when they hit maximum aerodynamic pressure. As they get higher you will hear them say go at throttle up. THat was when one blew up before and I get nervous every single time till they get past that point.

  • Shaun05/04/2010 at 10:31

Looked good. Glad they got past throttle up OK

Yes, good feel good factor watching the build up and launch on a bank holiday. Telling a mate of mine on the phone about it as it happened. He has not got the internet and was dead jealous. This just might change his luddite ways and get him to hook up, ha ha!.

There is not going to be a lot more to see from the shuttle today beyond replays. Oc they hit orbit the rest of today and tomorrow are taken up with checks of equipment and the heatshield. Wednesday they dock with the ISS and Friday is the first of three space walks with the others next Monday and Wednesday.

During the spacewalks the sidepodastronaut will operate the robotic arm from inside the ISS

  • Turkey Machine05/04/2010 at 12:14

  • Steven Roy05/04/2010 at 12:16

You need to put the rawl plug all the way in.

If it is hard to drill start with a smaller diameter drill then go to the size you need. That will be much easier

  • Amy05/04/2010 at 12:18

You said something about needing a flatmate?

Haha, no couples, and you can't leave Zoe behind!

  • Amy05/04/2010 at 12:29

    This is excellent team work

  • lou05/04/2010 at 12:32

    don't blame us ;)

  • Turkey Machine05/04/2010 at 12:32

Instructions? What gave you the impression we knew what we were talking about?! :D

  • Turkey Machine05/04/2010 at 12:33

Need more torque? Use an F1 wheelgun!

  • Steven Roy05/04/2010 at 12:33

This weekend is the first round of the LeMans Series at Paul Ricard. Audi have their new car racing for the first time but I can't find an entry list so I don't know if Franck is racing.

I don't know who is driving for Peugeot

  • Turkey Machine05/04/2010 at 12:36

    We're not panicking. Laughing maybe!

  • Turkey Machine05/04/2010 at 12:36

When you put the screws in, the rawl plugs seat themselves in the holes you drill, so at least they stay in.

  • lou05/04/2010 at 12:36

team giggles? we could be team kat you know :P

  • startledbunny05/04/2010 at 12:37

    i'm reading i'm reading.

the pin thing that goes in the non-chain end of the blind, it says that you put it into the blind, and not the bracket. it looks like it clips into the bracket.

    i've confused myself here

  • Turkey Machine05/04/2010 at 12:38

Alex's drilling scared off the spider! :D

  • Turkey Machine05/04/2010 at 12:38

    WOW! It's a BLIND! :D

  • lou05/04/2010 at 12:38

  • Turkey Machine05/04/2010 at 12:40

Enjoyed? That's made my bank holiday that has! Cheers Alex!

  • Amy05/04/2010 at 12:41

    Red Bull again saying they aren't running active suspension;

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/82741

I think what is happening is quite simple but very clever. I think they are simply using tyre pressures to adjust the ride height, you adjust pressures anyway so its discrete and no-one will notice you doing it. I also think that they have used journalists and their own mechanics to bring a sense of mystery around their speed, causing everyone to think its about this active suspension when really it's just down to a fast car but with the other teams using time and resources on active suspension techniques.

    Thoughts?

  • Leigh O'Gorman05/04/2010 at 13:20

I just think that Adrian Newey is one of the greatest designer's of all time and leave it at that. A drawing from dear ol' Adrian is might gold dust!

  • me05/04/2010 at 13:28

    Thoughts?

i think you're being very naive if you think that ferrari require a manual ride-height adjustment system yet red bull can achieve the same thing via the adjustment of tyre pressures.

back to cynicism school waldock, you're not trying hard enough.

  • Lukeh05/04/2010 at 13:28

That would meanincreasing the tyre pressure when the car is heavier. If you don't touch the tyre pressures and add 160kg of fuel the extra weight will cause the tyre pressures to increase. Further uncreasing them to change ride height must take the tyres out of the narrow range they work in. I am no mechanical engineer but would increasing the tyre pressures and adding weight not change the camber angle of the wheels?

  • lou05/04/2010 at 13:34

Add weight does that anyway, you could factor all that in.

  • me05/04/2010 at 13:36

wow. jake is a masterful top-spinner. on eddie's sweaty nipples:

It was clear for all to see just how hot under the collar he was during that qualifying session, and I think his reaction is a small glimpse into the passion he still has for racing.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/jakehumphrey/2010/04/when_it_rains.html

  • Steven Roy05/04/2010 at 13:37

Add weight does that anyway, you could factor all that in.

How? You can't touch the suspension set up between quali and the race. So if you add weight and over pressure the tyres you can't counteract the effect of that. Besides Bridgestone is not going to let him run their tyres out of pressure range

  • Jon Waldock05/04/2010 at 13:38

    Just a thought

horner is talking cack, quite clearly. ted has said they have adjustable suspension since race one.

  • Christine05/04/2010 at 13:38

It was clear for all to see just how hot under the collar he was during that qualifying session, and I think his reaction is a small glimpse into the passion he still has for racing.

  • Jon Waldock05/04/2010 at 13:39

horner is talking cack, quite clearly. ted has said they have adjustable suspension since race one.

They can't adjust suspension and active suspension is illegal?

  • Steven Roy05/04/2010 at 13:39

No i mean you could factor that in when adjusting pressures and weight etc.

    Factor it in how?

  • Steven Roy05/04/2010 at 13:40

Haven't read it yet but Scarbs has another post on it

    http://scarbsf1.wordpress.com/2010/04/01/402/

  • Jon Waldock05/04/2010 at 13:40

    Factor it in how?

If you knew how much weight you were going to put on and what pressures you were going to have, then you could adjust it so that when you put the weight on the angles were correct, but then you wouldnt have as good quali pace, so its not a definitive answer

  • me05/04/2010 at 13:41

They can't adjust suspension and active suspension is illegal?

ia m convinced you're wrong and i don't believe horner's being entirely honest. the statement is very carefully worded.

  • Jon Waldock05/04/2010 at 13:41

ia m convinced you're wrong and i don't believe horner's being entirely honest. the statement is very carefully worded.

    so whats the answer then?

  • Amy05/04/2010 at 13:42

    http://www.bbc...04/when_it_rains.html

I like that Jake is about as good at running as I am.

  • me05/04/2010 at 13:42

jon. i was noted by multiple photographers that the red bull was standing far too high on it's suspension after melbourne qualifying. these guys see a lot of cars. and they all said the same.

    tyre pressures? really?

  • Alex Andronov05/04/2010 at 13:44

ia m convinced you're wrong and i don't believe horner's being entirely honest. the statement is very carefully worded.

This comes back to something I was suggesting the other day... If the suspension was operating on some kind of timer (I suggested a slow leak) then they could say "it's not active because it does not respond to the car".

  • lou05/04/2010 at 13:45

jon. i was noted by multiple photographers that the red bull was standing far too high on it's suspension after melbourne qualifying. these guys see a lot of cars. and they all said the same.

trust the photographers they're often the ones to spot these kinda things... e.g. - Darren Heath and the mclaren thing

  • me05/04/2010 at 13:45

This comes back to something I was suggesting the other day... If the suspension was operating on some kind of timer (I suggested a slow leak) then they could say "it's not active because it does not respond to the car".

    i'd agree with that.

jon. i was noted by multiple photographers that the red bull was standing far too high on it's suspension after melbourne qualifying. these guys see a lot of cars. and they all said the same.

    tyre pressures? really?

is the car was really high after qualifying (no fuel) then whats the issue?

active suspension works to keep the ride height the same when you have both no fuel and full fuel. if its high after quali their system is broke

    tyre pressures? really?

i did not say it was a definite answer, just one that i thought may be true.

you may now return to the corner with your cynics hat on!

  • me05/04/2010 at 13:46

is the car was really high after qualifying (no fuel) then whats the issue?

it didn't qualify like that did it? you can't even drive it like that!

When does Parc Ferme conditions start?

  • Jon Waldock05/04/2010 at 13:47

When does Parc Ferme conditions start?

As soon as you leave the pitlane for quali

  • Leigh O'Gorman05/04/2010 at 13:48

i stand by my shot from qually (and still think the look on Jake's and DC's faces are gold) - http://twitpic.com/1db5i2

  • Steven Roy05/04/2010 at 13:48

is the car was really high after qualifying (no fuel) then whats the issue?

The issue is they run with a low ride height dragging the plank along the ground. After burning off 20kg of fuel the ride height should still be low not really high.

  • me05/04/2010 at 13:48

When does Parc Ferme conditions start?

i think when you finish qually. but if the car slowly raises itself up with no-one touching it, the question is only "when it is measured".

  • me05/04/2010 at 13:49

i stand by my shot from qually (and still think the look on Jake's and DC's faces are gold) - http://twitpic.com/1db5i2

The issue is they run with a low ride height dragging the plank along the ground. After burning off 20kg of fuel the ride height should still be low not really high.

question then; what are the other cars like? are they really high in quali and low in the race finishing with it high at the end?

  • Steven Roy05/04/2010 at 13:50

i think when you finish qually. but if the car slowly raises itself up with no-one touching it, the question is only "when it is measured".

Ride height isn't measured by scrutineers. The only thing they would notice is if the rear wing etc was too high

  • me05/04/2010 at 13:51

question then; what are the other cars like? are they really high in quali and low in the race finishing with it high at the end?

only the ferrari changes ride height. and only manually during pitstops. so they're all the same height.

  • me05/04/2010 at 13:51

Ride height isn't measured by scrutineers. The only thing they would notice is if the rear wing etc was too high

    ahh, interesting.

  • Steven Roy05/04/2010 at 13:51

question then; what are the other cars like? are they really high in quali and low in the race finishing with it high at the end?

They are higher in quali than when they start the race but only by a few mm. Quite why the Red Bull would be visually higher is beyond me

  • Leigh O'Gorman05/04/2010 at 13:52

Right, I'm going to finally finish the Malaysian GP report and then do notes for Superleague - I may be back to a somewhat calmer self later

    Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr......

[F1 mechanics] were telling me their daily allowance in Malaysia was the equivalent of £30. Thirty quid! One round of drinks in a half-decent bar would account for that lot in Kuala Lumpur at the moment.

    just reading this week's gp+

"On Sunday when the rains stayed away, the grip was back and the race would have been rather undramatic had it not been for the four drivers who suffered most in qualifying fighting back to their rightful places in the F1 pecking order."

given that joe was another saying people should wait and see before writing off this season, i think people are coming around the idea we've been dealt a lemon of a season.

    Hello everyone,

Just finally back to a place with internet (grrrrrrr... the parent's place has no web access... grrr)

Saw the shuttle launch this morning with Dottie in it. Just think, 24 months ago I was annoying her when she was showing my dad, my brother, my nieces, and I around the Johnson space center with questions such as "Where are the alien bodies kept?" and "Wow... this is a HUGE building, almost big enough to fake the moon landing in."

All I can say is awesome.

    Anyhow, back to work :(

  • Bassano05/04/2010 at 15:48

given that joe was another saying people should wait and see before writing off this season, i think people are coming around the idea we've been dealt a lemon of a season.

I don't think she does. I'll ask my brother-in-law. I don't think they get very good web access in space. ;)

As for a shutout, I think she is a bit busy right now. She told me that they pretty much plan everything on the mission to the minute with little or no time to monkey around.

i think they've sorted it, it's game over. especially when only ferrari can match them and they're chewing through engines like they aren't limited to eight.

  • Journeyer05/04/2010 at 16:05

Well, only if RBR can sort out their reliability issues. So far, so good, but methinks unreliability will still rear its ugly head for RBR. And McLaren isn't too far behind on pace, either.

they are, at circuits with very long straights. they're going to be hopeless in monaco for example.

remember last year when people said JB would wrap up the championship really quickly but it went down to the second to last race cause Red Bull caught up?... we could still have a mildly interesting season if ferrari sort out their issues.. or if mclaren or mercedes catch up... or if the drivers adapt weaving knowing they'll only get a flag waved at them ;)

  • Journeyer05/04/2010 at 16:13

you need esp. good straightline speed to overtake at Monaco due to a lack of straights to slipstream on. if they can make it work on shorter straights, i can easily see them being competitive there.

    Question for F1 fans everywhere - why is the Bahrain Grand Prix on a Sunday? Would it not make more sense to do it on Saturday? {Comment #1}

Bahrain's on a Sunday because that's normal for F1 races. I wonder if a Saturday might make more sense for the race.

What is really clear to me is that Friday as a day for running F1 cars in a Muslim country is pointless. Religion is considered more important than racing over in Bahrain and Malaysia. Abu Dhabi probably got away with it on the grounds that the capacity was so low in the first place.

Maybe the solution is to go Wednesday-Thursday-Saturday, with Friday off Monaco style.

It was. I was 6 seconds off the lap record, but apparently that was because there was a kart with a new faster engine going round. I was 1 second off the fastest time in a comparable kart, which considering where I was in January is nice. Also, on my second 15-minute run half my laps were within 0.6s of each other.

I will confess to two crashes and two instances of ploughing though...

Even if it makes no sense for either the venue or F1 to do so? At the moment, I am convinced the rigidity of the offering given to the circuits is losing spectators and thus decreasing the likelihood of circuits either offering the remaining spectators affordable tickets or being willing to take a more expensive contract in exchange for not doing Bernie's stupider ideas.

Put simply, the modern F1 weekend isn't working for many places. Some sort of solution is needed and given the divergent needs of a global spread of circuits, I'm not convinced any consistent offering could be made to work anymore. As long as it's clearly signposted beforehand what each event is going to do, the TV spectators are in a much better position to be flexible than the ones who turn up at the track (though both have limits).

By the time a very wet Button returned to the paddock, a lightning storm had succeeded in knocking out the power in McLaren's offices – so he duly sat down with the press in near full darkness to talk about his build-up to the weekend.

"It's cosy isn't it?" he smiled. "It's like going camping..."

    hehehe :D

I can't see Bernie going for that - doesn't he view people at the track as a necessary evil required only to allow him to get to the TV money?

I'd imagine Bernie would plan a Saturday race to coincide with a day off for the Premiership (around the time of an international). I mean if he is content on screwing the rest of the world for a few measly millions in Europe, then let him have at it!!

I prefer my solution of having the Bahrain GP somewhere else :)

Imola has a fantastic atmosphere and it being the traditional start to the 'European season' was something I enjoyed... but the races there were dire. Worse than Barcelona. Schumi vs Alonso was good but they couldn't pass.

  • Alianora La Canta05/04/2010 at 18:14

    i'd argue you better retain an audience with consistent timing. {Comment #550}

If that was so, then angling the start times of Asian races to suit European audiences should have worked. It hasn't, because it's inconvenienced as many people as it's helped. From that, it's not such a big leap to imagine people might be helped by having the race weekend when it suits them rather than when it suits some centralised timetable. All the technologies that are helping TV viewers watch stuff at times that are inconvenient for them - iPlayer Especially now F1 viewership is expanding into territories whose weekends aren't like European ones.

The two things that still hold true are that the race really must be at some point between an hour after everyone gets home on Friday and about midnight on Sunday, and that the main practise, qualifying and the race need to be on different days (ideally with no more than three hours of on-track activity each day). The race is the one thing that really can't be skipped in a F1 weekend and thus needs to be in the actual weekend. The different days bit is because the F1 has to fight with other activities and if it monopolises too much time on a given day, the F1 fans will lose out to people who prefer a broader range of activities each requiring less commitment in a given day. Apart from that, the flexibility of F1 fans is astonishing (if the lessons of the last few years I've spent communicating with them on the internet is anything to go by).

  • me05/04/2010 at 18:17

    Friday evening?

    better.

the thing is i doubt it would work. there's no grass roots motorsport in these countries. no-one goes karting, and no-one cares.

shouldn't a country have to guarantee an audience to get a race?

  • Bassano05/04/2010 at 18:17

I stand by my 10 year plan though - if a country hasn't pulled some sort of audience or junior drivers after 10 years with a GP, then pull it off the calender.

The only exception of course, would be Spain which needed some guy called Fernando to boost it.

  • me05/04/2010 at 18:19

I stand by my 10 year plan though - if a country hasn't pulled some sort of audience or junior drivers after 10 years with a GP, then pull it off the calender.

The only exception of course, would be Spain which needed some guy called Fernando to boost it.

i say don't let them on without guarantees and throw them off if they fail.

  • Pat W05/04/2010 at 18:19

shouldn't a country have to guarantee an audience to get a race?

I do think they are doing it the wrong way, yes. Their argument is that F1 will attract more people to racing and kickstart the motorsport culture. I don't agree with that - I think something like WTCC or GTs or anything else should go to places that F1 doesn't go, and build up a core audience. Then F1 can go.

  • Leigh O'Gorman05/04/2010 at 18:20

  • Alianora La Canta05/04/2010 at 18:21

    agreed. but the money for the sport comes from the tv audience, i can't be doing with races on saturday. just race somewhere where motorsport is more popular. {Comment #562}

The money comes from the TV audience, the circuits come from the circuit audience.

F1 needs both. At the moment it's not getting the circuit audience, even at places that used to provide it with one (well, mostly - Britain's still popular!) And it's got to the point where F1 is running out of circuits - there's India and Rome due to arrive, but there are a lot more than two other circuits at risk of falling off the calender in the next three years.

The "race somewhere where motorsport is more popular", on its own, isn't working. F1 has to make its own popularity and if that means making it easier for people to turn up, then that's what it has to do.

It's not even just a question of when in the week to do races - if they had the brains to schedule Turkey at some point other than Turkish finals week (in a country where the bulk of F1 fans are students), they'd have half a chance of a decent audience...

  • Alianora La Canta05/04/2010 at 18:23

the thing is i doubt it would work. there's no grass roots motorsport in these countries. no-one goes karting, and no-one cares.

    shouldn't a country have to guarantee an audience to get a race? {Comment #573}

A country should have to guarantee an audience to keep a race, but F1 (and motorsport in general) needs to give itself a chance of getting that audience in those countries.

  • me05/04/2010 at 18:24

The "race somewhere where motorsport is more popular", on its own, isn't working. F1 has to make its own popularity and if that means making it easier for people to turn up, then that's what it has to do.

    does it though? says who? {Comment #590}

If "race somewhere where motorsport is more popular" was working, we wouldn't be seeing circuit audiences drop nearly everywhere, only in a certain proportion of the calender (the "less popular" bit). The places which didn't see a decrease last year were Britain (which once again managed a sell-out) and Abu Dhabi (which not only had no previous audience, but had a relatively easy limit of 50,000 spectators). There are places in the world where F1 is seeping more into the popular culture in a positive way and even a few places (including Britain) where the TV audience is up. Basically, 30 million people (or possibly 30 million divided by 17) are saying this with their remote control fingers.

Once that is accepted, the premise that F1 has to make its own popularity is completely logical. "Making it easier for people to turn up" is a theory at the moment, but you can't make popularity by leaving things as they are or reflexively going back to the old ways without figuring out which of those ways had the popularity-increasing effect and which, if any, of the effective old ways can be re-integrated into F1. New theories may be part of the solution - emphasis, at the moment, on may ;)

  • Alianora La Canta05/04/2010 at 18:37

    I thought the Rome thing was just hot air {Comment #593}

I think it's Bernie being desperate to have any circuits to replace ones that fall off the calender, judging by the low numbers of rumours concerning new F1-grade circuits and the point that Canada has saved millions of dollars per year by skipping a year of racing. When was the last time Bernie commanded less money the second time he negotiated with a circuit?

I expect to see Rome make the calender at some point in the next decade (maybe not 2012, partly because there's an election due in the interim, but Rome's road layout will still exist in a few years' time) as and when Bernie runs out of options.

I think GMM said it was confirmed back in early March subject to payment (cue multitudes of wierd/dismayed expressions from my fellow commenters). Note that payment isn't due until after Italy's next election, so if a party other than the one currently in power in the relevant part of Rome wins, it's possible the opposition might try to get out of the agreement by not paying, depending on their stance concerning the race.

It puts people on fresher rubber for longer, and if they say you can make the stops when you like, you could have Fernando make both stops before Jenson makes his first, and therefore not really know who'll win between the two.

Or generally more position changes in the pits, which is what some people apparently like.

i think what worries me is that atm we're relying on other things to spice up the action.

Bahrain = dry race = dull

Australia = wet race + good track = brilliant race

Malaysia = wet quali and silly top teams = much overtaking and good race.

What happens if it doesn't rain, and the teams are on the ball for the rest of quali sessions + races?... Without Alonso, Massa, JB, and Hamilton at the back of the grid we would have had a Bahrainesque race for alot of the time. That worries me. i'm probably over reacting

I need to add something to this: they are boring, the question is are they more boring or less boring than what we have in F1 right now, and that's something I don't know the answer to. I suspect two stops may help under the right conditions. They ruined it in DTM by introducing pit windows.

This is the question. We already know China and Spain are pretty rubbish as it is. I imagine they'll still be pretty rubbish.

I do think these rules would've worked better with a diffuser ban etc, but we're stuck without that so if the only way to fix it is a 2nd stop then let's try it.

    It won't.

  • lou05/04/2010 at 19:04

How many until we aren't over-reacting then?

wait till the moment it's too late to do anything... then we aren't over-reacting ;)

  • Christine05/04/2010 at 19:04

    2 or 3 dry races.

2 or 3 more? We've seen two already.

  • Pat W05/04/2010 at 19:04

I do think people are over-reacting. We've had a sample of 1 test race, 1 wet race, and one average race.

Maybe it's in response to the major anticipation that this was gonna be an awesome year, with 4 fast teams, more champions in seats, blah, blah, blah

    There is that..

  • Bassano05/04/2010 at 19:05

2 or 3 more? We've seen two already.

Some say we've only seen one

    Malaysia seems devisive

  • Pat W05/04/2010 at 19:06

    2 or 3 dry races.

2 or 3 more? We've seen two already.

2 or 3 in total perhaps. I discounted Bahrain because I really don't think they were trying, either due to the heat or exploring the rules in competition.

  • Bassano05/04/2010 at 19:06

We already know China and Spain are pretty rubbish as it is. I imagine they'll still be pretty rubbish.

    I agree

This means there's little chance of an entertaining race until the end of May: Turkey

    .

    .

    Possibly

  • lou05/04/2010 at 19:06

    2 or 3 dry races.

problem is... if we turn round in a few races and say, f1 is in trouble, non refuelling etc doesn't work people can still turn round and say 'well china and spain are always boring so there has been no change'... there will always be a counter argument which means we are over reacting.

  • Christine05/04/2010 at 19:07

2 or 3 in total perhaps. I discounted Bahrain because I really don't think they were trying, either due to the heat or exploring the rules in competition.

Fair enough. You let me know :)

  • RG05/04/2010 at 19:07

    I agree

This means there's little chance of an entertaining race until the end of May: Turkey

    .

    .

    Possibly

    But Turkey is never entertaining?

  • Bassano05/04/2010 at 19:07

    But Turkey is never entertaining?

    Hence the 'possibly' ;)

  • Bassano05/04/2010 at 19:08

    But Turkey is never entertaining?

    Wasn't the first one?

  • Lukeh05/04/2010 at 19:08

    But Turkey is never entertaining?

Turkey had loads of overtaking last year though! Like when Jenson got past vettel on lap 1 and...

    ...a...

    .....hmm. Well, that was it.

  • lou05/04/2010 at 19:08

    But Turkey is never entertaining?

so we're looking at Canada then.. failing that Silverstone?..

  • Pat W05/04/2010 at 19:08

    I agree

This means there's little chance of an entertaining race until the end of May: Turkey

    .

    .

    Possibly

That's perhaps the most frustrating part of any big rule change. We won't see the real effect until it is too late because of the bad calendar. Then there's my opinion it takes a few months before the teams/drivers get the handle of what they can do with the rules.

  • RG05/04/2010 at 19:08

    Wasn't the first one?

Not a clue, can't remember all the way back then ;)

  • Bassano05/04/2010 at 19:09

so we're looking at Canada then.. failing that Silverstone?..

    I forgot about Monaco

That can be hit or miss

  • Pat W05/04/2010 at 19:09

2 or 3 in total perhaps. I discounted Bahrain because I really don't think they were trying, either due to the heat or exploring the rules in competition.

I might be slightly clinging to the belief it'll turn out okay with crossed fingers, rather than being totally adamant :)

  • lou05/04/2010 at 19:10

    I forgot about Monaco

That can be hit or miss

but is that cause of pitstops though? seeing as that's when most of the overtaking happens?

  • Pat W05/04/2010 at 19:10

so we're looking at Canada then.. failing that Silverstone?..

Canada will be good. Silverstone will be good. Hockenheim... maybe. Valencia ugh. Hungary? Spa and Monza may be alright.

  • Bassano05/04/2010 at 19:10

I might be slightly clinging to the belief it'll turn out okay with crossed fingers, rather than being totally adamant :)

    Stand and deliver... overtaking

  • RG05/04/2010 at 19:10

Ooh Canada, thats a bit like Australia in reality.

  • Christine05/04/2010 at 19:10

I might be slightly clinging to the belief it'll turn out okay with crossed fingers, rather than being totally adamant :)

I understand. Like I said, I'm all about the positives now. However, I do think that you can keep on discounting races for a myriad of reasons, and suddenly we're at Abu Dhabi and it was a rubbish season but we still aren't allowed to over-react.

  • Bassano05/04/2010 at 19:11

Spa and Monza may be alright.

    Both will be awesome

Amy & I say so, it will happen ;)

  • Christine05/04/2010 at 19:11

    :)

  • RG05/04/2010 at 19:11

Silverstone and Spa last year I'd say were as good as Malaysia this year.

    Funny accents you mean?

Yes you can.. but last year was mostly a rubbish season for on-track racing and was only good because of the participants, the story and the points battle. I think that shouldn't be forgotten in a like-for-like comparison of the racing.

  • Alianora La Canta05/04/2010 at 19:16

    Ride height isn't measured by scrutineers. The only thing they would notice is if the rear wing etc was too high {Comment #351}

Unless the team was stupid enough to run it so low it wore away too much of the plank underneath the car.

  • Bassano05/04/2010 at 19:17

Here's a nice Plus piece by Tony Dodgins:

    http://www.autosport.com/features/article.php/id/2726

Various different things about qualifying are covered, the bit I like is Sam Michael at Williams talking about Rubens.

"The season is still early but Rubens is one of the best drivers I've ever worked with. He's got such a big database and for every two camber change tests that Nico's done, Rubens has done 100 of them. He just knows what's important to make the car quick. It's an amazing thing to not have that for a while and then to have it again.

"We took the decision to go with Rubens for those reasons. We thought he'd be good but he's far exceeded our expectations. And that goes for everyone in the team – Frank, Patrick, Adam (Parr) and myself. The guy is on a really special level. The thing that's surprised us most is that we think, how's this guy not been a multiple world champion? He's better than guys we know who are champions."

I've been that bored several times (actually Malaysia 2010's a bad example because I found it exciting, but Bahrain was only as boring as, say, Spain 1999 - or Spain 1998 until I realised I'd become a Jordan supporter part-way through the race).

    Yaay, Rob Bell.

    Didn't realise Fisichella was doing it. {Comment #507}

    Why on earth do they still have the GT1 class. What a joke. {Comment #509}

I'm not 100% sure. It helps make the GT2 designation still make sense (because it was billed as being the lesser-powered version of GT1) and because the FIA still runs GT1 cars in its own series (but not, for some reason, GT2). It may make more sense if I say 5 GT1 cars turned up for the test last month. Wonder what happened to the other 4...

  • Alianora La Canta05/04/2010 at 19:50

    I am surprised so many teams have three drivers for an 8 hour race {Comment #512}

I understand a fair few plan to have three drivers for the six-hour races later on, so it would make sense for them to have three drivers to do eight hours. Even if two drivers could make the distance just fine.

Evening all. Just had a mindblowing experience - reading the daily post.

I've had a pretty quiet day today, not been feeling 100%. The only phone call I've had all day was a call centre wanting the previous owner of the house :(

I did get an obscene amount of chocolate for my birthday present, it seems the children took advantage of the fact that today is Easter Monday and insisted on buying me nice chocolate.

    Why on earth do they still have the GT1 class. What a joke. {Comment #509}

Simple, its not the old GT1 class, its new FIA GT1, the cars will eventually turn up in ACO motorsport but at the moment is just FIA stuff they are doing

It can cost a lot because you really need to go a long way north to get the full experience. You can see it from Aberdeen but you need to go way north of Finland where it is really cold and there are no trains, buses, roads etc

Everyone I met was really really grumpy! I'd got the seacat over from Denmark. Compared to cheery Danes it was a real shock to the system. The whole place seemed really grey. I decided if I lived there, I'd be grumpy too. Gavin assures me you can drive across now though. Maybe the cheerfulness has seeped across.

I would think any planet with a magnetic field would have Aurorae. Not sure which other planets have magnetic fields, though.

All of them do. Uranus is the only od one because a long time ago something really big hit it and knocked it over. So instead of its north and south poles being on top and bottom like the rest of the planets they are horizontal

I would think any planet with a magnetic field would have Aurorae. Not sure which other planets have magnetic fields, though.

There are some planets that don't have aurorae because they don't have atmospheres like Mercury

no. I want the 3G version which arrives here sometime late April or early May. I want to be one of the first (I have one of the first batch of original iPods still going strong) but it has to be the right model.

I was bloody tempted though. I hope someone at head office has one for me to play with but I doubt we will see one for a month :-(

the guys that went to new York had orders for more than they could possibly get. Lucky he has several credit cards with high limits

I've got my timing results out of the folder and realised I haven't improved by two seconds after all - only by a more modest 0.022 seconds. Silly me for mis-remembering - and Dad kept telling me I was a lot faster than before* :(

    * - In reality I was much more consistent (my average time was 0.7 seconds quicker from before) but not visibly faster.

You will probably find as you get more consistent the next time you go you will get faster. You need to be consistent to find speed

Thank you for the advice. It was just strange that I was getting one message from spectators and another from the timing sheets...

Sometimes you can look a lot faster or slower than you really are. It can be very deceptive so you have trust the stopwatch. I read something last week by Nigel Roebuck where he was talking about watching Monaco qualifying with Dennis Jenkinson. They saw Prost go through a corner visibly slower than everyone else and assumed he was just doing installation laps. THe circuit commentator then announced that he had just done the fastest lap of the session.

Two experienced people who stood at the side of tracks all the time and they got it completely wrong.

Karting is all about feel, about how you use your grid, just because you're going faster into a corner dosen't mean you're going to be getting the lap times down

  • Turkey Machine05/04/2010 at 21:42

I think I'm becoming familiar with the last one of those. Still getting used to how the grip changes at this circuit and as for "feel"... ...the best I can say about that is one of my feet got pins and needles towards the end of the day. I don't think that's the sort of "feel" you meant though (mostly I end up driving with my ears rather than my skin nerves).

Except I've been told that by at least three people before and I really, really don't feel the grip through any part of my skin. I just get a bit of vibration that's mostly weather-dependent rather than anything to do with the kart.

If I tell you I am completely dependent on my ears rather than my foot to know when the clutch is biting when I do practise starts in a road car, this may give you a clue as to how bad my "feel" is...

Luckily that's Dad's department, and since I only get to practise in the kart car park (as it's the only place of private flat space suitable for this sort of task), the car doesn't get all that much damage yet. Though I'll admit to having stalled it a few times despite it being a diesel

I know my clutch is biting when my car tries to move forward but can't because ive still got the handbrake on ;)

Apart from moving off, every gear change for my car from 1st to 2nd and upwards just involves stamp on the clutch and let go, its great

That was also what I meant - it's difficult to actually hit anything in a big empty field. If I'm only getting to do 3 or 4 practise starts a month, then it's not going to do much damage to the car, especially if I figure out how to do some of them correctly.

Sorry I didn't mean to scare you. I'm sure you're not doing any damage. Holding the clutch up too high with the brake on is how you fry them nicely though. It's not a big issue on the flat.

  • Andy Taylor05/04/2010 at 22:17

So why can you change gear just by stamping on your clutch. That was where I started to get confused.

oooh. I mean when i change gear. I still do it normally, just don't use the clutch for long

  • Andy Taylor05/04/2010 at 22:20

Eventually appears to be the operative word, at least in my case...

I had great difficulty with clutch control, pressing the accelerator and raising the clutch at the same time was too difficult for me (see discussion on multitasking earlier on). It took many hours of practice to get it right.

On my driving test I clipped the kerb turning left, went through an amber traffic light and had to be told how to get through a traffic jam on a roundabout by the examiner. I still passed :)

  • Andy Taylor05/04/2010 at 22:22

you can do clutchless shifts in your car?

Yep. It's all about matching road speed and engine revs.

  • Jon Waldock05/04/2010 at 22:22

Yep. It's all about matching road speed and engine revs.

Of course, but my car wont come out of gear without the clutch, having forgotten to use the clutch a few times i literally couldnt get it between gears

  • lou05/04/2010 at 22:23

On my driving test I clipped the kerb turning left, went through an amber traffic light and had to be told how to get through a traffic jam on a roundabout by the examiner. I still passed :)

!!!!!! and i hesitate for a few moments in one of my tests and fail!! wtf!

  • Jon Waldock05/04/2010 at 22:24

It was 1986. Things have changed a bit since then. It was also the last day of the month, so I may have been part of a "quota".

  • lou05/04/2010 at 22:24

yes... but it isn't fair. lol

It will if you get the revs exactly right

  • Andy Taylor05/04/2010 at 22:25

Of course, but my car wont come out of gear without the clutch, having forgotten to use the clutch a few times i literally couldnt get it between gears

That probably means the engine speed is too high or low

  • Jon Waldock05/04/2010 at 22:26

It will if you get the revs exactly right

i shall try again tomorrow but not convinced. surely jamming gears in (Even at right rpm) dosent do the box a great deal of good? (compared to clutch shifting)

  • Andy Taylor05/04/2010 at 22:26

It's OK. Accepting I'm 41, that is the scary bit.

You are not jamming them in if the revs are right.

To get it out of gear try lifting of the accelerator and then apply very slight pressure to the gear lever and gradually increase throttle pressure

  • Jon Waldock05/04/2010 at 22:29

    a fiat panda???

    yaaaa. they look awesome.

i want a 500 more, but a panda is good for the moment

Alphonso is a panda. He's perfect for me! Nearly a year now and he's still rolling. His nose is scratched though. I might try and get someone to fix him as a birthday present.

    ;)

  • Andy Taylor05/04/2010 at 22:33

You are not jamming them in if the revs are right.

It is possible to drive a manual car without using the clutch. To get started you have to put the engine in first gear then start it up. Put car in neutral and apply brakes to stop.

This second technique also works if your accelerator pedal ever gets stuck down, in fact it works a lot better than calling the police on your mobile phone.

Of course driving without the clutch isn't recommended, but very satisfying when you get it right.

  • Turkey Machine05/04/2010 at 22:34

That's great but for £7k I could let a house for 2 years.

No, that I'd keep firmly in Scotland.

Knockhill has its own microclimate. I have been there in June where you can see 360 degrees of blue skies and a huge black cloud above the track. It's really funny watching the English teams when a new class comes up. If it's sunny they are out in shorts and T shirts then you get a massive temperature drop and horizontal rain. That day injune where there were blue skies everywhere it snowed at Knockhill.

  • Jon Waldock05/04/2010 at 22:50

Our camper van was pretty warm. Being able to put the gas stove on helped.

  • Alianora La Canta05/04/2010 at 23:03

How do you pull off that trick? I couldn't figure out how to do it at Silverstone last year...

    You just have to sleep flat. {Comment #1092}

That will be why. I can't sleep flat for toffee :D

  • Turkey Machine05/04/2010 at 23:04

Airbeds are good like that. Mine usually go flat during the night so I don't notice!!!

  • Jon Waldock05/04/2010 at 23:04

that sounds so tough. sounds silly but would not sleeping actually be better? i know when i wake up from about 3 hours sleep i feel awful, i'm much better if i stay up for as long as needed and then sleep it off later..

Up to about 3 or 4 thats fine because tahts when i usually slepe, but ive already done 6-8 hours of walking so sleep is what will get me through

  • lou05/04/2010 at 23:05

I did sleep for a day afterwards though :D

This year im going to have to stay overnight on sunday too so i get the sleep so i can drive home.

that's where we differ, i'd book myself into a hotel for the night and get a proper nights sleep before i drive home (cause i can't really sleep in tents)

    It's just like sleeping indoors...kinda.

I don't get cold in tents, lots of layers.

  • Alison05/04/2010 at 23:08

I've decided my parents have done me a big favour by exposing me to camping early in life. I am now hard to phase. Holidaying is like 1/5th of the price!

  • Turkey Machine05/04/2010 at 23:09

Good gods, you and I had the same upbringing!!!!

  • lou05/04/2010 at 23:10

I don't get cold in tents, lots of layers.

for bronze D of E i slept in a tent twice (having walked about 10miles that day) on two occasions. On both of these occations i had loads of layers, a nice warm sleeping bag and still got cold/had no sleep. needless to say i didn't like the camping part of the expeditions. I can put up a tent easily, just let me sleep inside :)

  • Turkey Machine05/04/2010 at 23:11

Er, call to arms! Pending my actually getting holiday booked from work for Sidepodpub meetup, can I please have a sofa to crash on overnight?

You need to get a better tent. Either that or share!

  • Turkey Machine05/04/2010 at 23:12

Sharing's good for tents. More people the better. Extra people = extra warmth.

  • lou05/04/2010 at 23:12

You need to get a better tent. Either that or share!

we were supplied with the tents... and there were 5 of us in a 4 man tent... we were all freezing, that's what happens when you're forced to do you D of E in early May though..
