Race day once again, and we're certainly looking forward to this one. We desperately didn't want rain in Australia so we could at least attempt to see the natural order of things. Although really we are still clueless, I'm not so against a downpour or two in Malaysia this weekend. Here's what we've been talking about whilst we wait for the race:
- The stewards rejected BMW's second attempt at a protest, but this was completely expected. The team put in the complaint really just as a formality so that the results of the Malaysian GP would be counted as well as the results of the Australian race - assuming things go their way at the hearing.
- Ross Brawn has done a terrible, terrible thing by using the word DNA, Brawn and Honda in the same sentence. Actually, no, he hasn't, but it looks like he's attributing a lot of the team's current success to the people that were there before he even arrived - suggesting he has only made a few changes here and there.
- Still thinking about qualifying, and how rubbish Ferrari are. What were they thinking? They can't possibly have thought that the time they'd set would see them through, could they? Was it really worth all that just to save an extra set of tyres? We do know they are hard on their tyres, but this seems the worst way to try and remedy the problem.
That'll do it for now. The racing starts at a sensible time for us in the UK, which is nice if only because at Sidepodcast Towers we really need to try and get our body clock's in order. Either way, we'll see you in the comments.
Looking forward to the race. Rain could open things up a bit actually, so it may not be a bad thing. Hopefully Ferrari can pick things up a bit too, it's a shame to see them doing so badly. Trulli to take it out though, followed by Button and Webber.
Rain and poor light could be a bad combination. If it rains there has to be a good chance of not going the full distance due to bad light.
Perhaps, but I still think that a spot or could help to open up the race.
http://www.autosport.com/news/grapevine.php/id/74279
I call BS. Lewis would not walk away from the sport.
There is a lot of emotion flying about and it makes great headlines. Some reputation repair perhaps?
He was 'deliberately lying' from what I can gather. He may have been told/forced? to, but that doesn't excuse it totally.
Cool heads will see that walking away from McLaren, or the sport as a whole, is a mistake.
I remain a huge fan of both Lewis and McLaren. I am happy to be corrected if I am being 'misled' by what I have read/heard. :-)
I think the interesting part of this is that Bernie now seems to be on Lewis's side. I can't wait to see how differently he is treated the next time he is up before the stewards
I can't see him leaving McLaren but I bet Ferrari will have the cheque book ready if they didn't already have Kimi, Massa, Alonso, Kubica and Vettel under contract.
Go to bed Lewis, by the morning you'll be a Ferrari driver?
Perhaps Bernie is protecting the sports reputation?
LOL. You mean they don't have the whole field with options on all of F2, GP2 and Formulas BMW, Nissan etc?
The thing that gets me is not that Hamilton lied to the stewards, but the fact that he's lying about his lies. What he did in Melbourne was wrong, but these things happen. If Hamilton just admitted that he and his team were wrong but that they accept that and that they accept their punishment, my respect for Hamilton would've gone up drastically. As it is, my respect for him both as a driver and as a person have gone way down. I was never much of a Hamilton fan as it was, but now I am even less of one.
That said, I don't think Lewis would walk from F1. I also hope he doesn't leave McLaren either.
He can't pull the Schumacher to Benetton trick again
I know so many people who are convinced that Kimi is going to walk away despite his contract and that Ferrari has all of the others on some kind of option deal.
How does whatever was said affect his ability as a driver. I can't understand why your respect for him as a driver would change.
LH told the truth when he got out of his car as reported by the media. I still haven't seen a transcript of the stewards inquiry. Based on McClaren's track record at inquiries I can understand why their may have been approached this one with a significant amount of trepidation and kept their cards to themselves. Damned if you do and damned if you don't. Plus, what does Charlie W have to say about all this? This is at least the second serious McClaren incident he's been involved with and is not commenting on, why?
Let's get on with the race. I'm sure there will be more issues to discuss at the end of today's event!!!
There is no transcript of stewards meetings and no minutes taken. So they are having a meeting in Malaysia about a discussion in Australia about which there is no record.
Both Toyota and McLaren made repeated calls to Whiting about who should be in 3rd but he didn't give an answer. Had he or anyone else in race control answered then there would not have been an issue.
He has been involved in many incidents and his reputation is far from blameless. We have all this rubbish being thrown around about who lied. I once wrote an article about one of Charlie's big black lies. I will try and track down a link.
I titled the item Charlie Whiting is a liar and no-one cares. It is worth going on to read the comments after it as they clarify some of the points. Sidey in the contacts is a previous alias of an anonymous podcaster some of you may be familiar with.
http://www.f1-pitlane.com/content/charlie-whiting-liar-no-one-cares
Some people pick drivers on ability, some on personality, some on the team they race for, or whether they are winning or not.
Agree with their methods or not, it is how it is.
If McLaren had told the truth, they should have ended up 3rd or 4th. At this early stage of the season, they would have been happy with some points versus the zero they have now (even though every point counts).
I agree with that but there needs to be a method of resolving these situations in real time. In this case the race finished under the safety car so the order wasn't affected but can you imagine the implications if this had happened on lap 20 and the driver in third had held up the driver whose position that rightfully was.
If the IRL can do this under green flags the ultimate high technology formula should be able to do it under yellows.
I think I may have found the ultimate style over substance website
http://www.startrekmovie.com/
As a sportsman. Driving is his sport. Therefore, as a driver. I didn't mean in terms of his driving ability, nothing said can change that and I can't refute that he is good at it.
I'm quite sure there will be.
I am still trying to understand how Barrichello can get a five place drop penalty and only go from 4th place to 8th place... Has a new number been discovered that I am not aware of? When I went to school, 4 plus 5 equalled 9....
I guess Vettel's 10 place drop comes after Barrichello's in the order penalties are applied
It is because of Vettel's penalty. It doesn't matter what order they are done either. Either Barrichello goes down to 9th and then Vettel drops beneath him pushing him up, or Vettel drops to 13th pushing Barrichello up to 3rd, before he moves down to 8th.
With all the talk about "clever" diffusers, it seems like noboby has noticed the fins at the front of the side pods on the Ferrari and a few other cars, I thought all sticky out wings and fins had been banned? it appears that they have also taken advantage of a "gray" area?
I think there was a comment on them during qualifying. Because of the way boxes are specified to block out areas that cannot be used there will always be ways round it. Turning vanes / flow conditioners in front of the sidepods are banned but Ferrari effectively cut off the front outside corner of its sidepods and mounted its mirrors on flow conditioners. The clever people will always find ways round the rules.
I was going to be in bed early to be up in time for quali. OOPS. I am going to bed now while I can still get 4 hours sleep.
I was going to say something but I then I remembered I'm not your mother. I normally subscribe to the 'friends don't let friends stay up to late the night before a Grand Prix' theory, but i tend to put it on hold here at SPC because I'd never stop saying it here!
so the diffusers should be okay then? If Ferrari had been more clever it would be clear cut
staying up until 2 AM just for the race start is a killer on the US west coast
Its all good if you're in China, a sweet 5pm start for me!!!!
A nice, primetime 8pm start for me! I'm going to enjoy the first few races while I can, before we get stuck into the European races.
that whole earth being round thing stinks.
just read a report that sepang airport as of right now, 2 hours 50 mins before race is HEAVY RAIN, with THUNDER
Yep, currently a thunderstorm and is 27 degrees C. Hopefully it will clear up in the next 3.5 hours.
Hello everyone!
It looks like we are going to get a lot of action, on and above the track.
I hear ya. Just wait till the European segment of the season kicks and with 5 AM start times.
thank goodness Portland is known for its coffee because I'll need some every race Sunday.
So did you go with the Boyd's or just went to a Starbucks?
I have Stumptown beans for my home machine :) Where are you?
Olympia. I used to live in Portland up in 23rd and Burnside area.
I live at 23rd and Marshall! Small world.. though too many timezones for my taste
Well, when the race ends you can go to Rose' Bakery and get the fresh stuff.
I've walked past a million times but never been in. I'll have to go now that I've googled it and on your recommendation. Their website is making me hungry.
Plus the stepping stone is good for a sunday morning breakfast. Especially after a hangover.
I miss living down there. So many good places to eat. Also for the fact that it is so much nicer in my opinion than Seattle.
Is it sad to spend Saturday night watching a race on the other side of the world, getting drunk on Belgian beer, running multiple laptops to keep up with sidepodcast, live timing and a multitude of justin.tv feeds? Perhaps my redemption to my gender is that I'm shopping for shoes while waiting for the prerace....
I'm officially hungry for chicken cordon bleu. Thanks :)
vous êtes bienvenu
ok, just 45 minutes until I get DC whispering sweet nothings to me. Why did you leave Portland?
me too!
I actually spent a summer there during college. I went to the Uof Oregon down in Eugene. I was looking for a job in Portland but got a one in Olympia instead. I still go down there a lot because I have a lot of family and friends down there and plus I go to random Timbers game.
I moved here from Maryland last summer. I love most everything about the city. Too bad you're up in Olympia but I guess its good you have a job because there aren't many here.
Well, at least you are not in Ohio, Michigan, or even in Astoria... where the unemployment race is +10%.
morning all.
See on Joe Saward's blog that the GP2 support race started late due to rain but that it has now stopped.
Oregon is #2 behind Michigan. 10.5% statewide :(
The rain or the race?
Live commenting thread open:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/04/05/live-malaysia-the-race/
Good morning everyone!
I asked joe this on his blog, but does anyone what the rules are if there is lightening at a race. I can see that as a major problem?
Ops. Time to move.
Oops. The rain, sorry.
Apologies for going back to this story once again but are The Sunday Tiems pulling something out of nothing?
Lewis Hamilton considered quitting McLaren, and even Formula 1, over the controversy surrounding his exclusion from last week's Australian Grand Prix, according to a report in The Sunday Times newspaper.
I seriously doubt he wanted to quit F1. Sure it was a shameful few days for them but I can't see it going that far.
Will live comment the BTCC from over here.
Would make sense, seeing as it's not Malaysia :)
Phew... think i'm gonna go lie down. Feeling icky is not nice :/
Will speak to you guys later. Has been a fantastic weekend of formul 1 goodyness once more :)
Round two is at 3pm. Next race in about 30 mins.
Time to grab some lunch, methinks.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/stay-cool-avi
love it
Bless Rob!
:D
How to describe a race in 60 seconds without really knowing what happened:
http://www.f1minute.com/2009/04/05/05-apr-09-button-wins-rain-hit-malaysian-gp/
:)
Thank goodness for the iPlayer!
Renault Clio Cup at 1:35.
I asked joe this on his blog, but does anyone what the rules are if there is lightening at a race. I can see that as a major problem? {Comment #59}
There aren't any covering lightning specifically. Only if Charlie Whiting considers it dangerous would there be a stoppage. Personally I would have stopped it as soon as the lightning arrived because carbon fibre is seriously conductive and it would be just like the worst nightmares of malfunctioning battery KERS systems. Apparently Charlie Whiting knows something I don't.
If anyone knows what it is, please enlighten me.
The race started, then stuff happened.
It started to rain, and even more stuff happened.
Then it was red flagged.
this weekend has been an awesome weekend for sound bites :D
The only other time I have seen lightening during a race was the 2001 Le Mans 24h - and that continued on. There did put the SC out 4 or 5 times, but the did not stop the race even when the sound of rain hitting the granstand roof was drowning out the cars!
If the cars are moving , the chance of a lightening strike is minimal.
right time to go make some lunch :) back soon
someone wanted a screenshot of this guy?
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/track-temperature-is-wet-jpg
Watching the BTCC support race - someone's lost a bonnet. :D
and heres kimi chilling
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/icecream-avi
Both continue though :)
Cheers! Another of the many lols from this weekend.
Very interesting story - http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/74282
Apparently Ross offered to clean up the grey areas in the technical regulations, which would have made the double-decker diffusers illegal, but the teams rejected the offer.
They make contact again!
He's trying to rescue the bonnet. :D
A (somewhat) montage of quotes and happenings from Malaysia
"I need the white visor!"
"Felipe baby, stay cool"
"Nooooo!"
"Oh look, he's said it again!"
"Um, no, thats a replay actually"
"In my professional opinion, I deem the track to be officially wet."
"What! This is the worst time of my life! I want an ice-cream!"
Second round of the BTCC starts in a few minutes.
Oooh, off on the parade lap.
Bugger.
Just thrown my kettle chips all over the floor. :(
Neal and Giovanardi on the front row again.
ooh I wish I had chips. Sadly it is 11.30pm and I have to go back to work tomorrow after a wonderful 2 weeks off so I should be sleeping, not eating :(
Brilliant start by Turkington and Collard...
Neal had an awful one, down to fifth straight away
BTCC for those outside UK: http://www.justin.tv/jonny3tv
What is it with the BTTC cars now.
They all look awful.
The Ford car's livery is not great. I do like Team RAC's though, nice and original. F1 are you listening?
The Arrows livery was similar.
Yeah, but that had more black really.
I liked SEAT's livery last year. Shame it wouldn't work on an F1 car...
Did Dynamics lose their Halfords backing?
Aye. Sometime over the winter I assume
Plato nearly spins...
Turkington messes up on the last lap and hands win to Collard, first win for the lad, well done.
I've got two video feeds running. itv.com with BTCC stuff. Indycar.com with Indy Lights.
It has been a long off-season.
Wait till the F1 reaches Europe ;)
You now know the reason for my blog name.
Haha, I don't blame you.
The FA Cup draw for the BTCC picks Plato for Pole for Round 3
Should be interesting!
I just had the email from Joe Saward to say GP+ is ready.... already?!
This is quite entertaining, the tow truck has managed to get stuck in the gravel trap.
right I'm stopping watching both of these (Indy Lights and Porsche Cup). time to stretch my legs and get some milk before the shops shut.
will be back for BTCC race 3 and the Debrief although I might dive out of that depending on when IndyCar gets going.
Is there not an ALMS race on the St Pete IRL program?
It was yesterday. MotorsTV should start showing it about now, they delayed it for no reason whatsoever.
There were 17 cars, their lowest ever. 3 P1, 3 P2, no GT1, rest GT2.
That is always a good plan
We have returned home safely from the big bad outside.
I tell ya something, its been suspiciously hot recently.
And so have we - although we got quite a lot of mud in our shoes. Nice to see the British weather still lurking in its friends in the Commonwealth. :)
I see you had a great time :)
Ab-so-LUTE-ly! :)
I might not be able to do Debrief, though - connection too unstable. I'm thinking if I'll leave a message, or if I'll just do a write-up for it... :D
Either would be very much appreciated!!
Allan McNish is at Brands. :)
What a rough few hours... :(
McNish even speaks like Jackie Stewart nowadays. He is turning into a JYS clone. The rhytm and phraseology of his speech is identical.
Ah! All right. :) Will do the write-up, probably, then. I have a lot of interesting tidbits, and a good anecdote or two. ;)
I may leave a message or talk to you guys if I'm still up by Debrief time, but with my parents around, not sure if I'll be able to do it. We'll see... :D
Phew! That's a relief.
The elder statesman of Le Mans? :)
Not quite the elder statesman yet but he is getting up there.
In two races this year Brawn have scored more points than the previous two season by Honda F1
They missed the start of the Formula Renault race for adverts?
safe and sound, sore feet. i think this is why god invented cars.
Typical ITV, just bloomin typical
we just appreciate you checking journeyer :)
*checking IN
(am go stop typing now)
don't stop, you guys typing is why I love dropping by and checking in when i can! :D
even if i'm typing badly?
don't we all? ;)
Do what? :D
I just ventured to the shop. Needed the walk after being in front of the PC since 9am!
nearly time for BTCC race 3
when is the next round of BTCC? Have missed nearly all of todays :(
I thought I was watching an old race when I saw the Justin feed earlier. Seriously, have they so little money that they can't develop new Touring Cars anymore?
Torrent it.
26th April at Thruxton
same day as Bahrain GP. I'm considering skipping Bahrain to take in some live racing as Thruxton is my nearest track.
I would go to Thruxton dude!
they don't have much money at all, the only reason they are 20 cars is because the cars are cheap
Right, off to bed for me then.
Mr C, do play my voicemail. Enjoy the Debrief! :)
Night Mr. Jouneyer
Thanks for popping in to tell us about it man!
Thanks for the updates, sounded like fun!
and from me too
Night Journeyer.
How did Plato keep hold of that??
By the way, no luck with the Sidepodshoutout on Danish F1. They announced the address a few times but never read out any emails. Odd, because there was plenty of time for them today!
Cool - The BBQ works! We're eating "Bones" tonight (Ribs ;-) )...
I prefer what the ribs come wrapped in. ;)
S... , is there supposed to be meat on them? ;-)
Hey RG, how did your game go today?
we lost 5-3. werent to bad, just lapses of concentration in defence
Shocking!
Great driving by Plato.
Hi all, this is my first comment from... My new iPhone!
If nothing else, it will make finding the science museum easier, and I will be able to live comment from silverstone! :D
Envious!
Very good going for a damaged car!
Jonathan Adam is having a great race too. I remember him from Clios.
Wow! Well done you!
Fantastic :-)
Yay for iPhone! Another person to comment at Silverstone too! (I'm planning to do the same on my iPhone)
my head hurts
Aww. Long day?
The stupid thing is, my laptop is right next to me!
I think he's been watching a little too much racing (also to plug his blog in that, its awesome!)
Sat in front of live streams and commenting for far too long :-)
I was just thinking of setting up a twitter feed to shout the top three of every race as it ends.
And is iPod in a nutshell ;-)
Ah, I see. Well, I can recommend going outside.
thx :-)
I did that. It helped but then I started watching more when I got back.
Time for a cup of tea.
Ghosbusters is on! Channel 4. Classic.
OK time for dinner. Should be back in time for 7pm and the debrief ;-)
Good plan. I think I'll do that. Early for me but means no interruptions later.
WHAT???
I know.
Reccommedations like that are just reckless. Someone could get hurt.
Must be spring.
Hmm. You're right. I didn't think before I typed. Can I take it back?
Jenson Button's win on local ITV News here in Westcountry
Is there really much point in doing the national anthem when all but 1 driver are British?
Sounds like we need to invent internet tipp-ex
I will add it to our list.
looks like the BTCC Justin.tv feed will be showing IRL later.
I signed up to the IndyCar.com thing though. will see which i prefer.
It's gone very quite..
quiet, even
Just watching the WRC on Dave, something to do I s'pose
I think most people are preparing for the debrief
We certainly are :)
I'm trying to un-ill myself!
I'm clearing my brain by watching Ghostbusters.
I think the Debrief is going to clash with IndyCar at some point and I was going to write notes for that like I did with F1 for Malaysia/Australia. I'll see if I can have both running until my head hurts again :-D
I preperation for the debrief! :D
Aww, well, remember, the debrief is always available as a replay and a podcast, so don't strain yourself!!
Feeling any better?
Yeah thanks. Had some really sweet medicine and a lie down with a glass of ice cold water and it's starting to help.
Brrrr, so cold. I think im ill, a temperature probably, my body likes making me ill :(
Howdy all, i'm back, missed the gp, just watched the highlights, hoping bbc put the whole race on the iplayer soon, also hope BTCC is put on itv catch up soon too!!
How is everyone?
Whisky always works!
Fine, frantically pressing refresh on iPlayer so I can watch the race as well. Hope you get a bit better soon as well mate
Thanks, how was BTCC?
Good. Had BBQ'd ribs and chips. Now drinking Cider. Computer fixed for now. All is well!
It was quite good, some good moves. A couple of first time winners and Plato was good.
Christine is now 25th in Fantasy Racers....wheres 'me' ??
I'm joint 1st :D woot
Is it worth watching and is it better than BTCC?
*WTCC :-(
BTCC better than BTCC?? :P
its always worth watching :D
Is the BTCC better than the BTCC?
i prefer BTCC tbh
Oh by miles, by miles my friend
Always, always is.
WTCC is a parade.
Bourdais laments race not restarted
Did he not say that the conditions were "Un-Dwivable"?
Seat's seem to be wiping hte floor with everyone at hte moment. The new BMW of its time, BTCC your not sure which car will win!
No he said they were undwivable, undwivable :D
How did Button make up four seconds in two laps to take the lead after his pitstop today? That was phenomenal!
Because he is in a Brawn
Brawn told him to just go for it.. and to push the car as much as he needed to... so he erm... did.
Yes and yes.
On that note:
Brawn tabled diffuser 'fix' last year
Hmm... interesting they rejected his offer - must be because the other teams thought they had all the loopholes covered. Definitely double standards now they are protesting against him because he found something they didn't!
He did the same and pulled out a massive lead on Vettel in Australia, but then the Safety Car came out.
How much are Brawn sandbagging then?
That was Schumi-esque how he drove today to get the lead!
I mentioned that earlier and nobody seemed to notice!
Are we expecting a Debrief anytime soon?
I've convinced my girlfriend (total non-motorsport person) to go to Brands Hatch with me during the summer :D
woot! however a bike went past her house which she said was loud...but it....wasnt...at all...hmm....
Live thread now go, go, go:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/04/05/live-we-dont-stop-for-rain/
Hopefully a lot.
The way Rubens was acting in the interview with Ted gave me the impression he wasn't happy about the team favouring Jenson.
Happens a lot on SPC :-(
Oops, double quote thing again
My Dad said were gannin back to Croft this year as well, yay!
Earplugs
well John Button mentioned in Australia that Jenson was able to do most of the race without having to push the engine or anything... today i think it was Ted that said that Jenson had been given permission to push the car as much as he needed... so i take it turn the engine up and just go for it. Personally i think we still haven't seen the full speed of the car. We still are yet to see them do a very light quali run...
i have ear defenders at the ready :D
Going deaf is part of the experience!
agreed
yeah i thought that... i don't think he was happy with the pitstops either. It must be a little like a flashback from his ferrari days for poor Rubens. they couldn't help but favour Jenson today though... Rubens did have to start 5 places back from any qualifying..
Too true.
That was the most fun I've had live commenting a race, btw. Maybe Britain '08 aside...
that was the teams fault though!
Lewis Hamilton wanted to quit over Melbourne lies
How true is this story???
Just wanna say that is not the official Sidepodcast line.
:(
this thought makes me a sad panda
Aww why not?
I said about this the other day, I really am not buying into it. Sensationlist rubbish over nothing.
Sorry for being slow, but what time will the debrief be starting? Thanks
Hmm... he said "dodgy pit stops." Maybe he thought they were holding him back with the strategy so he wouldn't be a threat to Jenson?
they had gear box problems in Melbourne too... i'm sure if they could have fixed it without replacing it they would have.
Really, asap
Probably not very.
Jenson is a much stronger bet for a WDC ... and we know how fantastic a number two Barri is ;-)
Whitmarsh denies Hamilton quit threat
Poor Rubens though. He left Ferrari because he was fed up of being number two...
when you see storys like that, look for quotes in the story
So we can trust what McLaren say now then? ;-)
maybe.... i took it as meaning he wasn't happy about the constant pitstops and all the tyre changing... cause in the end without them he would have been much better off... i dunno tbh..
One rubens gets a pole and a win which I think he'll get in a few races time then I'm sure he'll be fine. Jenson's just had a superb start to the season and Ross knows I'm sure both are capable of the druvers championship if they go for it.
yeah... he must be frustrated that it's only been two races, and he is already appearing to the public as number 2... even though he has done an amazing job. he certainly hasn't been a Heikki. ;)
LOL at Druvers Championship
Cheers, just trying to get the other computer rebooted
drowsiness :(
Sounded like something from Fraggle Rock
Sure but Jenson is a hard act to be keep up with. Malaysia convinced me that he is the smoothest most stylish driver on the grid - just needs a competitive car!
i've been saying that all along! ;)
A bit of both - I think it is certain that Anthony went to Spanky as some sort of bargaining banter. Martin would not necessarily know this and in truth Lewis did not say this. Lewis will not retire from F1 just now.
Yes and even last year I agreed with you - but I think he had rather given up on the Honda F1 last year.
To be fair Honda F1 gave up on Honda F1 last year :P
yeah, i think so too. probably cause he knew none of it was worth while cause 110% of the teams efforts and developments were going toward 2009. :) i'd probably loose a bit of focus too.
Sure wouldn't you?
Sure if I was in Ross' position. As a fan though I've supported them constantly for years no matter all the problems they had. Their efforts to concentrate on 2009 car obviously paid off despite the frustrating turmoil with the actual Honda team but even after everything they had going wrong for them I refused to give up on them. They definitely did the right thing imo though with concerns to 2009.
Just wanna say that is not the official Sidepodcast line.
Aww why not? {Comment #246}
I think Christine and me are partial to their hearing and want as many of their listeners as possible to retain their hearing as well - and not just because it helps when listening to their podcasting output...
Interestingly enough, when I went to an A1GP event a couple of years ago (with the old cars) we were in a grandstand next to the long straight at Taupo. I was deaf for two days afterwards!
Also, I have noticed that if I listen to my earphones too loud over time and then stop completely for a few days my hearing gets sharper.
you say that like you're proud of it?
and yet you still think:
"Going deaf is part of the experience!"
that's just stupid.
Woah steady on buddy ... I am not proud of it at all. I have changed earphones to noise-cancelling ones for the train so I can listen quieter and I plan to use ear protection at Le Mans. We were certainly not proud of how we felt after the event - it was not nice at all.
Going deaf may be part of the experience but it shouldn't have to be.
I try to take very good care of my hearingg. I went for the best option I could - custom moulded earplugs.
Absolutely fantastic. Not cheap though. I wear them at gigs, air shows and motorsport.
Sometimes I wear them to fade the other half's inane whitterings about America next dop drug addict, dancing with the z listers into the background
fair enough, you weren't around when we had the original conversation, and i missed the subject when came up the other day. it's still a stupid thing to say though.
Custom moulded earplugs? Where does one get those?
http://www.demon-tweeks.com/products/ProductDetail.asp?cls=MSPORT&pcode=CUSDIYPLUG
found these on Demon Tweeks, is this what your meaning?
I need to get me some of them!
Mean those I did, yeeees...)
You are right... and knowing now of your original post (it was before my time started here) I would not have said it. What I should have said is that the noise is part of the experience, but nobody should knowingly give themselves the after effects of it :-(
http://www.hearingprotection.co.uk/
ER Series are the best. I've got a couple of different filters for different events.
As I said - not cheap.
:)
