Hands up who knows what went on yesterday? Could you explain it to the rest of us? It was madness, and whilst I know we haven't yet unravelled it all completely, I'm kinda hoping for more of the same today. It's about time we had a race that wasn't straightforward.
- There seem to be rumours circulating that Glock won't be able to race tomorrow, and that the FIA have said no to Kobayashi filling in. I haven't seen this confirmed anywhere, but it sounds likely. We're pondering the point of having reserve drivers if they're not allowed to actually race.
- The FIA also haven't managed to produce a revised grid yet. They wanted to take some time to think about which order the five place grid drops are applied to ascertain who starts where. You would think they might be able to do this quicker than 24 hours, but there you go.
- I just wanted to once again say how supremely awesome the marshals were yesterday in Japan. They were at the scene of any accidents within seconds. Now, granted, a lot of the accidents occured at the same place, but that doesn't take away from the fact that they were on the ball and much better than we have seen at other, very recent, circuits.
That'll do it for now. Don't forget the Debrief stream will be along much earlier than normal, as we are moving bits and pieces of our house around. I'll see you in the comments.

This weekend is a prime exmple of why it is there though.

I don't think it's possible to do a direct swapover of driver because if the usual driver pairing is selected, the FIA will assume that each driver is taking their usual race number. What you can do (and Toyota did at the end of 2004 with Zonta) is have one driver use both race numbers at different points in the season. As long as the team-mate is different each time, but was also present in that race number the previous race (to prevent the FIA from automatically giving the switching driver the same number as before), the swapover of driver number (and thus allocation) would be possible for one driver.
The Toyota example went thus:
Zonta stepped up to the Toyota race team in Hungary 2004 to replace da Matta. Christiano's race number was 16 and Zonta used this until Trulli joined Toyota. The heads of Toyota decided to shuffle things up a bit, with the result that Zonta missed China entirely (Trulli used car 16 and Panis car 17). Then Panis retired one race early and Zonta replaced him. Since Panis had used car 17 and Zonta's car 16 was already occupied by Trulli, Zonta used car 17. This makes Zonta the only driver (this decade at least) to have driven both race numbers for a team in the same year.
Probably too much messing about for a team to use the technique for that purpose though.

RubberGoat Racing are pretty much where they were last week: 46th in the Sidepodcast League and 273rd overall. Meh, pretty stagnant I suppose, but it looks like the usual story with the drivers.
Kubica has been pants all year but it’s too late to change him now. Sutil was unlucky after being shoved off by Kovalainen (sorry Amy!), but my team basically suffered because Glock did not race.

Starlight Racing are disappointed to have dropped 3 places to 544th, but happy not to be on the last page of the table. It didn't help our cause that Timo was missing in action with an injury. We wish Timo a speedy recovery, and have decided to drop him for the foreseeble future.
In fact we have thrown the toys out of the Pram, "Cleared the decks" at the team, dropped Heidfeld and Alonso, and hired Vettel and Raikkonen, hoping to prevent further drops down the table.
As the race started going, our cat decided to watch. I managed to catch her on film.

The Adrenaline Junkies team have given up in its ambitious chase to overtake Mr C before the season end after only moving up 5 places to 428th. Boooo Victoria, boooooo. I want a public holiday, I haven't had one in months!
I may have stayed up late with Katherine last night drinking wine and listening to music. I taught her about Muse and everything.
Then we looked at the time and we realised that a) we were quite drunk and b) it was 2am. So I went to bed and hoped I didn't sleep through my alarm.
Guess what?
No I didn't sleep through my alarm. My alarm didn't go off because I had drunkenly forgotten to plug my phone in and it had run out of batteries.
However Katherine woke up at 6.05 with a headache and needed to take some neruophen. She noticed the time and woke me up. I had already missed the start so I wouldn't have been able to join you live, unless I fastforwarded some of it. So I should have just gone back to bed.
But instead I decided that I would wake up and find a suitable moment to fast forward.
By time I realised how stupid a concept this was I was already part way through the race and realised a few things:
a) I was still drunk
b) I definitely needed more sleep
c) I couldn't comment because I was out of sync and I didn't want the race spoilt
d) but I couldn't fast forward and miss any of it.
e) so there wasn't any point in being up
f) but because I was still drunk I decided to plow on
g) and so I finished the race
h) drank quite a lot of coffee
i) and then I tried to go back to sleep
j) but I couldn't
I think it's clear to see that something went wrong :) Sorry I missed you guys!

I just realised I didn't catch up on yesterdays daily when I woke up this morning. Mr C ruined NZ lamb!
OK this is prompted by Gavin's FR blog. I tried to choose my FR driver according to who I thought might score the most points for their value. So taking this race as an example Kubica who scored 83 points but only costs 5.2 million (pointpermillionratio: 83 / (5.2*10) = 1.6) is a better choice for me than Button with 93 points and costing 11.7 million (ppmr = 0.79). Especially if you have limited resources you would want to distribute them in a way that you will have the most return. So choose driver with high ppm ratios.
Let's say you have 50 Million and you want a score of 750 from the next race. You need drivers with a ppm ration of 1.5 (OK it doesn't work quite like that but let's assume that for now). I tried to apply this for the next race and calculated where each driver has to finish and how many position points he has to score to achieve this.
Hamilton 134.5 win or 3rd fl+pole
Vettel 112 win or 3rd fl+pole
Button 104.5 win or 3rd fl+pole
Webber 91 2nd
Barrichello 89.5 3rd

I have been trying to figure out a response to your comment on my blog, but I may as well post it here. I don't follow how this works, because my top 6 PPM values are worth 50 million yet only score 652 points on average.
On average they score:
FIS - 72 pts
ROS - 107 pts
BAR - 136 pts
BUT - 158 pts
GLO - 96 pts
HEI - 83 pts
Yet the PPM ratio is only 1.2 by your calculation. How would you get to that figure of 750 points with only 50 million? At some point, PPM is a good ratio, but does it not work better if you go for a big scorer?
Eariler in the year I considered selling Glock, Sutil and Kubica to afford Webber (who was doing well at the time), yet as it turns out I needn't have bothered because it worked out at the same amount of points anyway...

Hey Gavin, what do you think of Sutil making it all the way to lap 15 before pit stop number 1 when everyone predicted lap 12 or 13. Can we assume that Hamilton, who pitted on the same lap even though he was 6KG heavier, pitted earlier than necessary? Any comments on actual pit stops versus predicted (in this and other races) are welcome. Perhaps a blog post because I will probably miss whatever you answer here.

I Freecycled about 550 Pre recorded VHS Films before I moved
I thought about it. The problem is I only have about ten or fifteen actual 'bought' ones, and the rest are 2 or 3 years worth of F1 races which I know I have to dump anyway (though I know there are collectors).
The quick answer is that everyone has been using fuel consumption figures for 2006 which would have been way too high. I use the F1 Yearbook figures from Alianora, but even these are on average a lap too conservative. (For more info please refer to my blog post about it here)

For a while I was cranky that Bathurst had given up the long weekend and the football had stolen it. But everytime the Japanese GP doesn't conflict with Bathurst, I get over it.

Can I just add that we almost had a team get banned for a safety violation, yet we have two this weekend, one gets a mild penalty and the other gets off Scot-free?
In the industry I work in, if an accident occured because safety signage or warning signage was obscured, then the company would be in very big trouble!

I wouldn't want one though. It's not the car aspect of F1 that I liked if that makes close to any sense.... I don't feel the need to pay attention to cars. I could just as easily get into watching badminton. It would fill the same role for me.
i understand why people aren't happy about f1 this season, it's not been the best off track, but i don't feel anywhere near giving up on it. no doubt it's my bias towards Button and Brawn GP but whatever it is i'm grateful. The next few races should be great too, i just hope everyone who is finding it tough to follow will find it easier soon. it makes me sad to think that the FIA are making fans more unhappy than normal.

personally i'd always choose a 2 day f1 weekend as opposed to le mans. while le mans is great and all it doesn't have the same appeal as f1. f1 is just special in my eyes. nothing comes close.
Once you move to Europe and there is sidepodpubbing at Le Mans you will be there

The political mess doesn't bother me in the slightest. When I feel like people are messing around with random penalties and affecting the outcomes artificially, probably to the detriment of an actual race, I don't like it.

Again, I felt the same way. Then I went. I cannot describe what it is like. You just have to be there.

I think it's different for me because I love all motor racing. Picking the subtleties and strategy is what i enjoy. Seeing a car on the edge is what makes me watch. Having raced as well makes a big difference.
Everyone should spend time in any form of race car (go karts?) as much as possible. It really changes the way you think and feel about the sport.

once you start getting that far out I don't even know where to look because there is so many towns in each direction and I don't know which ones would provide circuit access. I got told Liege is nice and you can get a train from there then a bus, but ahhh I don't like this side of organisation! Monza is so much easier since you buy in Milan and thats that. Stupid out of the way racetrack!

The problem is, there arent any GA areas anywhere near Eau Rouge unless you want to watch cars going down that straight, which i suspect nobody will want to do. All the GA people will be probably end up miles away.
I dont think this is so much of a problem, but i think we should all aim to stay has close together as possible so we can meet up in the evenings. Some people may not see the rest of the sidepodders if we are all staying hours apart. The evenings could be pretty lonely too.

A couple of months-ish ago some of us watch the launch of the combined LRO-LCROSS mission to explore the moon including to search for water.
Part of the LCROSS mission involves part of the spacecraft undocking from the rest and impacting a crater to throw up as much dust, rock and hopefully water as possible so that it can be analysed. The impact is happening on Friday.

I got a reduced multican pack of diet coke from asda as one can had fallen out this pack and they'd had to tape it up again. It ended up being a third of the price because they'd made a hash of it.
Right now as I'm finishing the final can is the first time I wish I'd bought the normal pack. Then I'd still have one. I couldn't buy 2 at the time, that would be greedy!

The most excited I've ever been was when Vettel managed to get past Kubica in the pits for 3rd a few races ago. That beat him winning. I really enjoyed looking at all the lap times and stuffs.

Why do uni's put books that are out of print on the key text's lists? My course is only 1 year old!!!

They might not know. These lists are often rolled over. They may have just chosen good books from similar courses or they could be the lecturers personal recommendations. If they own an older copy, they won't know it's out of date. Checking things are still in print before they publish lists isn't something unis do well.....
