Ah, our first testing session has drawn to a close and we have a couple of days to rest and analyse what we've seen so far. It's always had to look at the times and draw anything conclusive, but it's plenty of fun looking. Meanwhile, here are some of the things we're talking about:
- Virgin Racing had their launch... sort of. It was delayed and ultimately was just a few pictures and video, but there were plenty of thoughts on the new look car in the breakout thread. We featured the new car in the latest F1 Big Picture, and I must say the title is rather fabulous.
- Autosport have prepared a good table of all the times from testing in Valencia, with the drivers from each day compared with all the others. It's a great way of sizing up the teammates at least, even if we can't really work out which team is ahead of all the others. That would appear to be Ferrari, but is it really?
- It is Thursday Thoughts day today, and Journeyer has very kindly offered up a guest post with the question of the day on it. There'll be a post along later with the question in it, and to take part, all you have to do is write a post on your blog with your answer. If you don't have a blog, we'd be more than happy to host your answers via a guest post here. Get involved!
That should keep us going for a while. Thursdays are not normally good, but let's hope it goes smoothly enough, and I will see you in the comments.
hullo thursday. love this twitter conversation:
jonny noble:
@Jamesallenonf1's challenge is to count up on his feed how many tweets were sent from the Valencia track during the first real 'tweet' test
james allen:
@NobleF1 - got the answer Jon - it's just under 1,000 tweets on the live feed since 9am Monday. As you say, the first Tweet test
i swear the daily was going to mention how flippin' fabulous kathi's calendar instructions were: http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Calendar
no doubt the plug will make it into tomorrow's instead. good stuff anyhow kathi.
That was the theme for the blog post I've been putting off for nearly a week. I should write it tomorrow. Oh, Thursday Thoughts is on.. Friday then.
From Jake Humphrey on Twitter - BBC F1 press launch:
Right, bed. Watching DVD's of last year output with DC and EJ at 9(to make it better), the BBC F1 press launch at 12, then meetings till 9pm
I'm off to bed. Just to quickly say I've made a start my Twitter lists:
http://twitter.com/toomuchracing/teams
http://twitter.com/toomuchracing/drivers
http://twitter.com/toomuchracing/series
Will add more tomorrow.
Sleeping is harder than it looks!
Sleeping is indeed harder than it looks when you've been awake all night all week and you're a little inebriated. I concur.
I've not been drinking. I've really warped my sleep patterns lately though. I was still awake when Nick woke up last night :(
I have a plane to catch this morning and have to leave the hotel in just under 4 hours, and I'm not in the mood to sleep, my body clock has adusted to being awake from 3pm to 9am. I guess I'll sleep it off on the plane.
Don't do it then or stop thinking of raw meat dripping on cooked meat
I don't even have meat in my fridge!
Then you should be able to sleep
If I did have any meat, it would certainly be at the bottom of the fridge though....
What's your excuse?
I can't cope with 24 hour days. I need days to be longer
I don't understand why I haven't passed out yet. I can't have had more than 3 and a half hours sleep last night. I got up at 9am. I really should be asleep now....
I find the less sleep I have the longer I can stay awakethe next day. I used to have the weirdest sleep patterns when I worked odd shifts. I could work 16-18 hours a day on 4 hours sleep a night for about two weeks then I would sleep for about 16 hours straight and go again.
Hmmm yeah. I quite often have to entirely skip a night's sleep to get caught up.
I have only done that once recently and thought I would get an early night the following day to make up for it. I was still awake at 3am having been awake for 42 hours
I must be the one who uses up all the sleep you people don't have.
I want my sleep back
I thought you didn't need it? I love sleep :D
Doesn't mean we don't like it! I love sleep :(
Is there any cricket on? That puts me to sleep.
I don't need chocolate but I still want it and if someone has my chocolate I want it back
At 3:30am? I couldn't bring myself to watch it
It's hard to argue with that.
I am going to try to get some sleep now. No-one is allowed to eat my chocolate while I am away.
Good night all
:D Night Steven
Shhhhhhh. Sidepodcast is asleep.
Bad start!
Morning all :)
Blame it on the Thursday? ;)
Hey Alex.
You are bright and breezy - I am still pondering the thought of double dose of schumacher tonic to the F1 cocktail.
Sometimes, I wonder if F1 is one of those sports where no one wants to get old... :D
Wolf, getting everything ready for Shanghai. Only the visa needs to be finalized now. Have all the requirements ready.
Oh, have you heard that the metro line to the Shanghai Circuit is already open?
haven't heard, interesting.
I see tweet from Tony Fernandes, he just arrived in our polluted city :-)
Just opened at the end of last year, apparently. So am hoping to use that instead of the bus. :D
Oh no! Just realized that the Shanghai conversation is in the wrong thread. :( Mr or Mrs C, can you move this when you're awake? :D
back to normal thread :-)
Just opened at the end of last year, apparently. So am hoping to use that instead of the bus.
it should considerably shorten the travelling time, although it depends from where the trains go
it's connected to all the other lines, so in theory, it should be straightforward.
nothing, nothing, nothing ever is straightforward in China
that's why i said in theory. :D what are their metro lines like?
singapore on sale march 1. You know you want to mr journeyer.
I want to, but I can't. :( I'm managing a project. And I've already booked my only leave during that project - Shanghai.
Are you going?
no idea, never took metro in Shanghai, always taxi. but use it quite often in other cities like Shenzhen or Guangzhou and there it is OK except some of the aromas in the air. personal hygiene is not exactly popular among the travellers :-)
looks like I will skip Singapore this year as Monza won the vote for the European race of the year. and as Singapore is the one after Italy I have to give Singapore a miss this year
You're still seeing Amy. ;) She's going to both!
Hmmm. I see...
I am kicking off the season with Melbourn so there is another opportunity :-)
Morning!
Thanks for the link to the testing data - I feel I should blog about it but then lots of people say the times are worthless...
maybe you can prove those time to be worth something :-)
something seriously wrong with my typing today
The lap times on its own are indeed worthless. You can look at the longer runs and try making a hypothesis in terms of pace. It'll be deadly difficult (esp. considering we don't know their fuel levels), but hey, it's worth a try.
Morning guys and girls. i have hoards of screaming schoolkids on my train and ELO is failing to drown them out. i need a lot more faith and a better solution. suicide is looking good!!!
Does your train have heating? It's -5 Andronov here and our lovely train company seems to hav decided it's going to be very green and not heat up the trains!!!
The worst part is, they then come through selling hot drinks! :(
Hmmm... Suspicious.
The have a 'travel guarantee' where if all the trains for that day are at least half an hour late, you get some money back if you have bought a monthly ticket (great using averages to make sure they don't pay you!).
The funny part is, what with all the snow I have been late every day for nearly two months now. DSB paid me some money to my bank and then sent a letter asking us to pay half back because they paid us twice!
rubbergoat, thats made me put faith in UK railways. now thats dangerous!
Hah!
It's not as bad as the UK - stuff still works etc, but we ain't far off!
To NXEA's credit, they do have a policy of refunding you part for the journey if it's delayed by 1hr or more. That's more of a regulator rule though.
That's funny and irritating all at the same time.
Indeed.
Morning all.
Morning :)
I have a wordpress question... What's the difference between Categories and Tags?
I kind of have a feeling that perhaps for me categories would be things like "Articles", "Fiction", "Archive". And then tags might be lots of things mentioned in the article? Is that right?
Basically I think I might be supposed to move some of my categories into tags?
Mr C and I have this argument on a regular basis, and the middle ground we've sort of come to is that categories are all articles on a theme (for instance here would be F1 Debrief and Guest Posts) whilst tags are all key words from within the post for searchability (so could also be F1 Debrief but would also include things like Podcast, News, Ted Kravitz, Twitter, etc, etc).
I think that makes sense. But for example say I was talking about the continuing story "The Empty Vessel" (Part 3 is out on Friday). Previously there was only one kind of thing (called Labels) so that would have had the Labels, "Fiction", "Long", "The Empty Vessel". My thinking being that you might want to go to a page which gave you all of any of those three things. So are they all still categories or is only now fiction a category?
In my theme, it seems that categories can group posts on a handy page while it's harder to do this with tags...
Morning Christine.
Thursdays are rubbish. Just had a work based Tremayne :(
In that case I think they all need to still be categories because a pretty obvious use case is, "I want to see all of the parts of this story".
I think that ends up being a style choice for you. For instance, here, we put things under multiple categories sometimes. The launch posts are going under News and Launches, because we want it to be a breakout but also it's a launch.
On STYA, I have one blog category, one Baby Panda, one Film Watch and I only put them in one.
It depends what you want to do, how you want to link to things, etc. I think in Wordpress you can have sub-categories as well, but I don't like that.
You can link to posts within a category and you can link to posts within a tag, but to actually embed within a page might be harder, I don't know.
I have always preferred categories because it fits within a column widget quite nicely: http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/category/fantasy-racers/
Blimey that Dave Gorman and I have been on the same track since forever... I just incorporated a post about Googlewacks I did back in 2003...
http://gamboling.co.uk/2003/12/30/out-of-the-3-billion-pages-there-is-only-1-page-that-matches/
Crazy...
It no longer is a googlewack though, there are 134 posts with those words in it now.
I have a bad feeling my friend may have just talked me into coming back to London in 2012.
don't tell christine, but joe went to see the renault livery up close and quite liked it:
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/02/04/testing-and-other-stuff/
WHAT?
#confidential
I can conclude the only reasonable course of action is for me to go and see the Renault up close as well.
#Spa?
you want to go back to paris?
Oh. No. Perhaps they could bring it to me?
That is still a long time away.
perhaps this is permission for you to go to Spain?
helicopter delivery to rockall?
Mr C can have a word with Eric, and it'll be a done deal.
so now that I've been talked into it, who wants to come to the Olympics with me :D :D
Apparently it's going to be an easy train ride for me. They are building a train line that will not be useful to me at any other time but during the olympics I will require no changes at all to get there - I think.
No excuse then!
The simple mention of the tennis being held at Wimbledon and the fact that clearly Roger is going to complete his golden slam was enough to make me decide I must be there :D
are you guys planning something that won't be happening for another two YEARS?
Me.
Morning.
I am far away. I need to save lots of money. I don't know what his excuse is ;)
If you come early, you could stop-by in Finland and go to the rally.
oooh
it can't possibly cost more than watching x3 grand prix in a month?
this is true. I am assuming that olympic tennis is cheaper than Proper Wimbledon tennis too because no one even seems to realise that tennis is in the olympics, its never ever on the TV coverage.
Nick has finally signed his test contract with Mercedes: http://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/formel-1/nick-heidfeld-ersatzfahrer-bei-mercedes-gp-1724234.html
Reservepilot sounds so much cooler than in English.
Morning everyone
I'm not planning anything honest!
It was just that I suddenly realised that at Crystal Palace train station they are supposed to be adding a new train line in May and there are lots of signs up etc. So I was curious...
"Where does the new line go?"
"To East London."
"Oh... I don't ever go to East London"
"Oh but the Olympics is in East London."
"But not for two years".
And then Amy mentioned it.
tickets go on sale 2011! ;)
Right team, shame he's a test driver. Passed over at 32! I do hope the guys bringing the cash are worth it...
morning
Had to use the stoopid retweet button.
*stomps about it a bit*
I blame Thursday
Had to?
I've found it doesn't tell you when someone retweeted you. The only way I know Mr C retweeted me at all the other day was when the RT showed up in my other account, it didn't show at all in the original account.
That should say *stomps about a bit*
I didn't stomp 'about it' like some ritual around a campfire.
But it was about the archers so that makes up for it.
Out of all of the things from the archers that I would most like to be real is Tom Archer's sausages. Because... Well I'd like to eat them :)
Would have been completely impossible to shrink the tweet.
or dancing around a handbag
same problem i have :(
There is a retweet tab that tells you all kinds of things like who you've retweeted, and who's retweeted you, but it's just another place to have to look.
Oooh, that's a good game. I have a think.
Are we doing a Nick breakout?
a good insurance policy for Mercedes though!
i thought heikki was cool when he jumped the barrier. this is awesome!
http://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/formel-1/heidfeld-mercedes-gp-ersatzfahrer-1712651.html
He needs a car bonnet to slide across
the timing isn't coincidental though is it? the day after schumi quits a full day test earlier than everyone else?
did mercedes panic?
:)
he looks very tired
The button is a nice idea, if only it worked properly
On the website? I hardly ever use it now. I was trying to do things on it last night and it wouldn't load properly.
Yea, it's an option down the right hand side.
do we need a breakout for nick. he's only a test driver, but it might spark a bunch of debate.
I asked five minutes ago and was ignored, so I figured not.
ooh, i didn't see it.
says it all :)
I wonder what Mr C will think?
:)
shhh!
Hehehe, it's okay, it happens a lot. Sometimes I must be either invisible or horrendously dull, but it's my site and you can't get rid of me :)
:)
heh...
By the way you asked when the archives of my site would be up... 2003 is up now. Man I write a lot!
ace.
For reference it took me 2 hours to do 3 months of archives!
Oh so worth it.
Lies!
i did it anyways: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/02/04/nick-heidfeld-accepts-third-driver-role/
#lovesyouchristine
Action Nick!
Why did he do that though?
And therein lies the rub with Nick - nice guy, consistent, good team player, but completely forgotten about...
Mercedes had a hydraulics problem which stopped Schumi early. But he had already done 80+ laps had he not? They just missed the last hour.
another break-out to keep people occupied: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/02/04/bbc-announce-plans-for-2010-formula-1-coverage/
(and when i say occupied, i mean organised)
Ooh good thinking to have a breakout for that.
Although I hate to do this twice in five mins but you have two links to J.Legard's Twitter...
no worries. i fix.
wow. posts a re coming thick and fast today. are we going for a record?
Do we know the record?
sidepodradio, i'd guess.
Oh yea. We'll never beat that.
until next time...
I read his tweets and I can hear his voice in my head. 8O
LOOK AT THAT! IT'S A MICROBLOGGING SERVICE!
Apart from that, I think it is something like 8 or 9. May have been a race weekend with news, race/session reports and podcasts. Back end of the season.
You are bright and breezy - I am still pondering the thought of double dose of schumacher tonic to the F1 cocktail. {Comment #32}
NO! Please, no! One Schumacher makes me annoyed enough at this juncture...
Ahh, don't!! :D
Interesting. We are up to five, so a little way to go yet.
I can't remember when it was though! And I think there was a lot of news.
#confidential If I did mine that would be 3 right?
wouldn't they be backdated?
and you has work to do!
Depends if you want them historically accurate or not.
#confidential
doh!
this is true. I am assuming that olympic tennis is cheaper than Proper Wimbledon tennis too because no one even seems to realise that tennis is in the olympics, its never ever on the TV coverage. {Comment #100}
If I remember correctly, Olympic tennis is cheap - but Paralympic tennis is even cheaper. Federer won't be in the latter though...
I do have another couple of posts to write today, and if Mr C is going to do an anti-Franck one, then that will help too.
Nick has finally signed his test contract with Mercedes: {Comment #101}
Mercedes have a good tester there, but I still think Nick would be better positioned if he was in an actual F1 race...
I'm willing to bet anything up to £7 that he's relying on Michael to get injured sometime throughout the year, thus stepping in
also, afternoon all
i have decided I'm not going to revive my f1 loonie blog, but instead start a new one where I will hopefully blog a lot more :) now to think of a name *puts thinking cap on*
Oh my word. Why does Shumi have number 3?
have you been living in a cave?
No, she went to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, who are clearly F1-mad!
So I was passing BBC News on my way to BBC Sport's F1 page and found this:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8497433.stm
Now the song is stuck in my head
someone has fallen behind on her f1 minute episodes:
http://www.f1minute.com/2010/01/21/20-jan-10-schumacher-takes-3-from-rosberg/
:(
I work a lot!
Good song that :)
in fairness, you went on holiday around that time didn't ya? we has discussed it a lot though.
Safety Dance is stuck in my head too
Do-do-dodo-do dodo do
Ah okay. I was watching a video and it suddenly struck me as odd...
So I get a lot of emails from World Series By Renault from their media people, and so today I get one with the subject;
"New Formula Renault 2.0 - Testing"
oooh, interesting i thought..opened up the email...
in big text "An invitation to experience"
i get a little bit more excited
read on aaand.....
oh, its for drivers. boo
thought it was for media. gah
In fairness... why does Shumi have number 3? :-)
Oops, they're talking about Down Under. Must.read..before.singing.safety.dance.
S'alright - Nick announced on Tuesday that De La Rosa had signed for Sauber! ;)
Awww poor overworked Nick :P
he's overworked? are you sure he's not just struggling to come to terms with... work.
From my conversations with people who have worked in Qatar, a lot of companies can be very ... relaxed ;)
Shockingly I'd say he works very hard :P
Hmmm I'd say it's a mixed bag. It's one thing to say that you can arrive and leave when you want. If you give someone more work than can be accomplished in a reasonable working day though, it doesn't really make much difference.
The management of his company to my ears in pure insanity. There's no direction or continuity of goals one day to the next.
I agree with that. I used to work flexi-time, which was nice, but you do tend to work more hours than required...
:(
he should move to a nice place in the sun, get away from it all
It doesn't seem to bother him. I don't know. It all seems horrifically inefficient to me.
hm :-(
Afternoon.
Hehehe sounds like fun.
just found this interview with fernando, in which he admits he is working on his imitation of Luca di Montezemolo :D
but I like this part the most:
http://www.ferrari.com/English/News/Pages/100203_F1_Ferrari_tornare_bambino.aspx
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJxN7AK9qA0
This is how Motorsport video's should be made
Epic. Wow. And Audi made this?! In a year Peugeot won??
Le Mans 24 Hours entry list is out.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/81272
Audi:
McNish/Kristensen/Capello
Rockenfeller/Bernhard/Dumas
Fassler/Lotterer/Treluyer
Peugeot has only announced lead drivers for each car: Minassian, Wurz and Bourdais.
The McKrisCap combo is the only identical one from last year for Audi, it seems.
Other key names in the entry list:
#5 Beechdean-Mansell Ginetta-Zytek Z09R Nigel Mansell, Leo Mansell, Greg Mansell
#13 Rebellion Lola B10/60-Rebeillion Nicolas Prost, Neel Jani, TBA
#14 Kolles Audi R10 TDi Christijan Albers, TBA, TBA
Pat, will the Astons this year still be Prodrive-run?
I'd expect so.
This'll be a car to watch too:
#4 ORECA Peugeot 908 HDi Olivier Panis, Nicolas Lapierre, TBA
and here's the newly-announced Renault reserve driver:
#17 Pescarolo 01-Judd Ho-Pin Tung, TBA, TBA
Very happy to see Highcroft get an entry too.
thread fail?
Ahh poo, sorry :(
So Mansell and his kids got an entry. The lap time difference between them should be interesting
Legard is the Trinity Killer, duh-duh duuuuuuuuuuum
Having two young guys and an old head is a good combo. Remember the post about Stefan Bellof how he would go and charge off into the distance and then a more experienced guy would stroke the car home? It's a good idea for an endurance team...
It is if the younger guys are any good.....
#confidential ;)
Am I right in saying one is fairly middle-ranking, and the other quite bad?
At least one of Mansell's kids is completely incapable of charging off anywhere. I would expect the old guy to be the fast guy in this team.
tis quite a high possibility yes.
one of them has just signed for WSR again which i find an incredible move
His surname is Mansell?
It worked for Senna and Piquet, no?
still annoys me though, plus mini senna and mini piquet are still alot better than mini mansell
how many years has it been now?
They are both way way better than the Mansell jrs. One of them would struggle to charge of in a tantrum
too many
driver database only says 1, but i cant believe thats right
Maybe it's lots of partial seasons added together?
I am surprised Mansell has done this - I remember in one of his books, he said he would discourage his kids from entering the sport...
thats what i though, but db usually has part seasons. dunno. anywho, he hasnt ever won a race and highest ever 10th in a championship
Most racing drivers say that but once the kids start racing they can't help getting involved.
so does Forix. I was sure it was longer but no, they were both in Atlantics in '08.
i remember him saying he wouldnt push them into it, but if your dads an f1 wdc then you're going to want to race
If I remember though, Nige's junior career wasn't stellar either, so I can see why he's pushing.
Forix says he didn't win either - times were different then of course
And they may end up being better sportscar drivers as consistency trumps speed...
Not quite true. His FFord career was incredible then he landed on his head and broke his neck. His F3 career was nothing special.
wikipedia sums up the sons' careers nicely.
It civers the rest of their careers too but this is a good guide t their ability
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greg_Mansell
Ah. Forix doesn't cover FFord
From his wikipedia page
After considerable success in kart racing, he moved to the Formula Ford series to the disapproval of his father. In 1976, Mansell won 6 of the 9 races he took part in, including his debut event at Mallory Park. He entered 42 races the following year and won 33 to become the 1977 British Formula Ford champion, despite suffering a broken neck in a qualifying session at Brands Hatch. Doctors told him he had been perilously close to quadriplegia, that he would be confined for six months and would never drive again. Mansell discharged himself from the hospital and returned to racing. Three weeks before the accident he had resigned his job as an aerospace engineer, having previously sold most of his personal belongings to finance his foray into Formula Ford.
I don't think Lewis Hamilton ever had to do that...
And yet it doesn't say "Couldn't drive a soapy stick up a dog's a**e..."
That's not to do with him though. People can't help who they're born to....
That might have been moderated ;)
There is a book in all the things drivers have done to finance their careers. There are some crazy stories in there. I remember two FFord drivers in the 80s who spent the winter working 16 hour shifts in an Australian mine to finance their racing. Can't remember who they were though.
Fantastic image BTW!
That would have got them some good money!
I'm pretty sure the Hamiltons were another run of the mill family
The other side of that argument is that Lewis Hamilton had to do a lot more to get a GP drive
They must have found money from somewhere.
They are. But what I meant was, they had McLaren money from when was it? 13?
I don't think Lewis Hamilton ever had to do that...
Maybe that's why Alonso and Hamilton fell out at McLaren ;)
Mclaren came in because Lewis was alot better than everyone else
I think it paid for their full season. I remember reading about it in Autosport(not capitalised in those days). Some driver had been whingeing about having no money to race and it was pointed out he could follow those two and work down a mine but I think this was one of the permatan brigade who thought the world owed him a racing career and hard work was not an option. If only people put their mags on the net and made them searchable.
but Bruno Senna certainly tried something like it
But Anthony was a smart operator. Also something that is not mentioned much is that Martin Hines spotted Lewis at his first ever kart race and offered to help so they had great contacts literally from day 1
well.. the beauty of wikipedia is that anyone can edit it..
Anthony had three jobs and then there was the McLaren link
He met Ron.
So when he applied to Campos and they asked him how quick he was, maybe he said "Never mind a soapy stick, I have done it it with a front wing!"
But if he had to I am sure he could
Stefan Johannson used a front wing with a deer but he was getting slgged off earlier.
Yeah. I guess the difference is that his dad made the sacrifices. He's lucky to have someone that would do that for him.
Most of the top drivers have had parents spend a fortune on their careers. That is one of the reasons it really bugs me when people complain about fathers hanging around F1. They deserve it with the sacrifices they made.
@lucasdigrassi Silverstone.. muuuuito frio
Lucas doesn't like the British weather it seems, I forgot all about Virgin being on track today
Jeff Gordon gets a lot of crap here in the states because his dad is rich. Lots of "well, if his daddy didn't have money, Jeff wouldn't have gotten anywhere" that sort of thing.
It's like people believe daddy's money made him faster. I've seen that a lot.
Quotes have emerged on Autosport:
"The 2010 entry is just the beginning. We're here for the long haul and have our sights firmly set on becoming on of the leading teams in international endurance racing, and winning the Le Mans 24 Hours in the near future."
He thinks he can beat Audi and Peugeot in a few years. Not.Gonna.Happen.
Who said this? Mansell?
Is he... nuts?!
Mansell Snr http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/81276
I mean the first part is fair enough, I'm all for it. But winning? nah.
Franck's turn first.
I wouldn't say that, but it certainly helps when you have the cash - look at Petrov (as mentioned by Joe)...
When the green flag drops the bull**** stops. Unfortunately until then we will be knee deep in it
There is more chance of Franck winning ten times that the Mansell mob ever making a podium
Does this mean USF1 aren't gonna be testing?
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/81275
"The car is quite late because we put a massive amount of development time into it," he explained. "We are taking our time and as a team we are confident we are on the right track.
"As soon as we are through the crash tests, we will be doing a shakedown and going to Bahrain."
Also mentions how Campos are looking a finalising a deal this week.
It helps. There are a lot of great drivers who never got past F3 because they had no money. There was a guy called Dave Scott who was always near the top of F3 but never with the right team. When Hill, Blundell and co were dominating FFord there was another member of the top group called Jonathan Bancroft. his results were just as good as any of the others but he had no money so he ended up working for Benetton a few years after he stopped racing.
They'd be better off in LMP2, that field is often flaky enough. Not this year though. Highcroft will win this year.
Looks like that to me. That also suggests if the car is that late they won't have time to put a model in the wind tunnel to check out their CFD data.
I am heading out. Hope the Mansells are not on the road as I don't need the hold up.
I like thursdays at work. less people around so i can take it a bit easy.
VBH is racing Abarth (Fiat) 500s this year :)

Ooh, that's good.
The Virgin Racing car out at Silverstone
http://twitpic.com/11cdp8
It's gone red again
But the swirls on the front wing have gone yellow
Woo hoo! No more work till Tuesday
Hey folks
didn't we establish the original piccy was just rubbish? i colour corrected the one on the homepage and notice autosport did the same.
Hey Bassano! No work til Monday for me. :D
chap.
Long weekends rool
There were photos of it outside yesterday and it went orange again
FTW! Hehehehe.
Journeyer, you might know
Is GP2 Asia on this weekend or did they abandon it completely?
It must be very close to that weird red-orange shade Spyker originally had.
although have said that, their other twitpics do look quite orange:
http://twitpic.com/116n27
has it been painted in hypercolor??
A quick Google shows that there are preview quotes, so it must be on.
Was it rumoured to be abandoned?
I thought it was folding, maybe I just assumed it would happen
who's driving btw?
Timo
I'll have a look at the Eurosport channel website
Glock.
so he didn't go with the gold helmet?
Looks like his traditional colors. But with the lighting so off, it's hard to be sure.
Looks like he's all Virgin'd up to me
I hadn't heard that.. but I haven't been paying attention to it.
I think it was when the schedule started reducing there was speculation it was doomed
will has a practice report up:
http://willthef1journo.wordpress.com/2010/02/04/gp2-asia-filippi-leads-the-way-in-practice/
Ooooh, Legard replies to people on twitter!
PR Campaign to repair his reputation? :D
Found it
British Eurosport 2 are showing GP2 Asia on Sat at 14:00 and Sun at 17:30
Caution: This is Abu Dhabi
I like how it comes with a warning :)
in fairness, this is a lot more than we get from brundle. i can't listen to legard, but at least he's trying.
Yup, no qualms from me concerning his twitter presence. Tis on TV where it starts to change :P
The hotel lights might be offline ;)
ah right.
I think the races are on Friday and Saturday though, due to the local weekend..
Indeed
Schedule*
Thursday 4th February
18:00-18:30 – Free Practice Session
20:30-21:00 – Qualifying Session
Friday 5th February
18:00-19:15 – Feature Race
Saturday 6th February
18:00-18:45 – Sprint Race
* Local Time
Oooh, qualms. Excellent word.
I wonder if Nick's going, he loves that place ;)
It's one of those words that is fun to say out loud, until you say it so many times it just starts sounding wierd.
I'm willing to give him another shot on TV. I watched the first few races with the BBC1 combo and it wasn't good, then spent much of the year with 5Live, and tried BBC1 again late in the year and he had improved. Not enough to listen to all the time, but he had. At least he's on an upward curve :)
I might too, but not at Singapore. Goodness me, that was a bad combination.
Is Ant back with 5Live this year?
Mm! Thing is, I want to like him.

ooh, link fail. soz:

Ah ha!
A thread for all occaasions. Ta
Are you on LCLT, Mr Bassano?
No, I just had no idea it was that detailed a launch from the beeb
Was only vaguely aware they were doing something, not sure why they're launching instead of covering testing tbh
Oh, I guess there hasn't been a comment from that thread in a while, then. Didn't show up right away on doohickey?
Folk were talking about Bob MacKenzie when i logged on but I was too busy looking into GP2 to read back
why the gp2 interest, and do we need a break out thread?
I've watched a few races over the last 2 years and it can be quite entertaining. I like trying to pick out the stars bound for F1
Lewis had some great moments in his GP2 championship year
Had set an iCal event for this weekend but had no idea if it was still going to be running (Asian races have been reduced to 2 circuits and a handful of weekends )
Shouldn't think so
Except for Pantano, all of the GP2 champions (even the last GP2 Asia champ Kobayashi) are in F1 now.
His mistake was dropping to a lower Formula after being underwhelming in F1
Not sure if he had much choice. I don't think he had the talent or funding to stay in F1 after he was dropped for Timo. The only other option I guess would've been a move to DTM, but that had no guarantees, either.
worked for Glock
I heard Timo mentioned.
Hey everyone.
Ello Mr RG.
Hey RG
a much better record than F3000!
Hehe, before I disappear for a few hours just had my favourite Sidepodcast subtitle - http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/awesometitle-png :D
Will be back later once I'vegot my head down and typed out another few thousand words hopefully. Byee!
True
He has a bit more talent I s'pose
Not to mention that GP2 can claim something that F3000 or F2 still doesn't have: a champion that also became F1 champion...
qualms
I know exactly what you mean. There is a very very surreal bit of comedy from Richard Herring where for 10 minutes he just says, "Mars Bar, is that right? A Mars Bar? That's a thing isn't it. Mars Bar, marsbar, you know marsbar. Is that a thing? I think it's a thing."
It's something about words where they resonate on the roof of your mouth.
Like if you say, "FebRUary" to explain how to spell it to somebody it's then very hard to say "February" normally right afterwards.
Which colour?
Not sure what you mean?
Is this a Pantene joke? ;)
Yegads. :P
I was going for Pantone http://www.surface-blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/6-1-pantone.jpg
But I'm not picky
OK, you get extra points for obscurity
Oooh I can never work out if I like those cups or not....
I don't want one because I would be awfully tempted to spend the rest of my life colour matching my tea a brown one. And if it didn't work then I'd clash and that would be bad!
Oooh, wait wait, I can do a plug here: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2009/07/18/a-mugs-game/
Get in!
Oh wow! WANT! I never change my mind.
In case you were wondering, it's black no sugar ;)
:)
:)
Want.
gooood evening!:)
Hey Lou
Evening :)
everyone had a nice thursday?
Hello all.
Nope.
Still feeling rough Tom?
Yup. Not the best, but good enough for me. Weekend starts now, anyhow. :D
Not so much now, things are just starting to get me down.
Hey lou and Jon. Been a bit of a dull day.
Hopefully you'll be better by the weekend and you can get out there and have some fun
oh :(
i was given a blueberry muffin when i came in..and now it's gone :( it was yummy though...
Best muffins evah!
Mmmmm I tried to make some the other day. I ended up eating the blueberries. Managed to make a carrot cake though.
I had fresh rolls today :)
I know. Rrrrrrubbish, to be honest. Not enjoying it.
true story :) apparently the muffin and my hug mug of tea were my reward for surviving the last 5 weeks of constant exam and deadline stress. i need to tidy my desk in a moment though as i can't even put my laptop down :)
blueberries are amazing :)
ooo!! mum makes fresh bread sometimes in the morning, specially in the summer. it's the nicest smell to wake up to :)
I think I'll catch up on some tv tonight or the film backlog
I saw The Hurt Locker the other night. Stunning film
homemade fresh bread first thing in the morning! that is awesome.
Have you watched Avatar?
I had it for lunch with my homemade soup :P
Saw it at the IMAX, loved it
Sounds yummy
Cool. If you had to pick between The Hurt Locker and Avatar for best picture, which would you pick?
That's an understatement.
Overall, in the eyes of the Academy, The Hurt Locker
Avatar was visually amazing but storywise... well, that's not what audiences watch it for
oo sounds yummy!! I was stuck with yucky school food and trying to work out if egg and tomato and chicken curry and apricot sauce were typical sandwich fillings :s
I really can't cook! Making soup and bread doesn't really count as cooking :P
Hehehe everyone loves Pocahontas! :D
True enough
Interesting. I have yet to watch The Hurt Locker. But in a year where the Academy made 10 nominations for best picture rather than 5, I think they're trying to reach out to the mainstream. I'm guessing it'll go to Avatar.
:P :D
I think it'll clean up in the technical awards but THL will get the bigguns
I have to say I wasn't blown away by Avatar. I enjoyed it while I was watching it but I wouldn't go too far raving about it.
I dunno... Titanic won it all, after all.
And... what was THAT about? An iceberg and a love story.
Ecclestone pushing for Stefan/Ralf Schumacher entry
First shortcuts, now this? Bernie has really been messing with our heads lately...
RALF!!! RALF!!
And we're off to the pun-nies:
Timo Glock gives Virgin first experience
Watch The Hurt Locker anyway, it deserves to be seen
I'm quite a fan of Kathryn Bigelow's back catalogue
Will try to do so... if they ever release it here.
IMDB says it was Oct 2009
I think it's been labelled somewhat pretentious! We certainly haven't got a whiff of it up here :P
It's more of a independant than a all-star blockbuster
It's taken the distributers by surprise I think
We usually don't get low-revenue films here - I guess they don't want to pay for its distribution. It'll only probably get shown here if they win Best Picture - and even then, in a limited release...
Right, food calls
Catch you folks in a while
I'm using my spare dough for pizza :)
Nom nom nom.
:D Makes me laugh whenever I read that.
Anyway, gotta hit the sack. Lotsa errands tomorrow.
Oh, and if you haven't yet, don't forget Thursday Thoughts! I'll read em tomorrow.
Night, folks. :D
Doing it now
Night :)
adioss
:) Night
Hi guys, hows things? Samsung G600 browser is veddy slow. Opera Mini it is then!
see ya :)
i feel like i've been out of the f1 loop for the past week, can someone sum up whats happened in 1 or 2 sentences please?
Stuff.
http://www.f1minute.com/category/daily/
you could listen to all 300 seconds faster than we could type them.
f1minute is a life saving podcast. they've been keeping me in the loop while i've been so busy with work and revision :) saves trawling through rss feeds and websites :)
it really is fantastic when the week has been as hectic as this.
before sunday's show i'm gonna need a recap and that's exactly where i'll be going :)
:D and i'm presuming reading the show notes too ;)
lets not go mad!
quite.
:D hehehe hi Alex :)
i'm loving being on spc tonight, just because, for the first time in ages i've not got to revise anything/ write anything for the next day. being here and not procrastinating is a nice feeling :)
shoo...stay? wooshoo!
Time to set up the f1 minute podcast on my phone then!
is it wrong that as i read that i imagined micheal mcintyre saying something similar? hehe
Probably not! he he :)
#confidential
Mrs C you have mail.
Tis perfect.
no only Dutch TV so it's payed to the BBC
odd. so you get everything except for 5live?
google is going to stop supporting IE6 users using calendar and gmail later this year.
YES!!
No. Video and audio dont play all the time. F1 Cars no Video, normel talk plays but not today. 5live stop's 5min in to the live F1 show and no demand
And so it begins?
wow!
isn't it already banned in some countries?
Can we ban anyone who made a website that only runs in IE6 from working in the industry?
Something very off topic but my neighbours are drilling away at 8pm! So annoying. Go. Away. :(
The Hulk has released his new website...
http://www.nicohulkenberg.net/
Annnndd......its in German.
ta Mr Nico
Don't worry, I've suffered that with Timo for years.
Apparently an English is coming soon
I'm booooooored!
Greetings all
Hello Steeeven :)
hello :)
Phew! Thought that was Jackie, got worried!!
Well you can't start a religion because we did that when Jackie was booored. You could write a guest post about your visit to the track in Abu Dhabi. I keep typing it as Abu Shabi. Every single time I do it
A kid at the Autosport show asked whoever was on stage at the time a question, and said Abu Dubai, not Abu Dhabi.
Bless him
Hehehe get Nick to do it! I'm more than happy to render it legible!
Someone did that when Chris and I were watching too.
err... I think. I might be mixing it up with a video I saw after, come to think of it.
Blimey. First time my head ping's worked! Evening all!
+1 :D
But you are bored now. You could help Alex and I sort out our live drawing sidepodradio show which has a few technical problems that need a little work
I was about to say, I can't remember it! :)
The calibration has worked then
I'm not so keen on the writing though! Or the thinking....
Good evening folks, how are we? I just ran 2.3 miles in 15 minutes so am a bit chuffed! :D
BTW, Mr C, did you ask Christine re: Joe Saward's evening? I'm a lil clueless when it comes to hotels in London and don't fancy the 3 hour journey back home!
So what do you like doing apart from organising meat and removing sequins?
You ran at 10mph! Impressed!
Making bread and soup....and pizza....
9.09, but close, yes. ;)
To be honest, that's quite an exhaustive list!
You need a new hobby then. Aerodynamics, composite bonding, suspension design or something like that
gah. what is it with spam this week!
"A new comment on the post #681 "Go Motorsport: Marshal Training" is waiting for your approval"
Comment:
Will money be taken from my taxes because I have a student loan?
Er... why are you spamming us with it?
I like other things. But you all make fun of me when I talk about them so.....
good question, thought i'd share the stupidity of it.
like what?
What other things? Who made fun of you? I wll sort them out if they do it again.
Reading, sewing, lunch dates. I like making things.
Whats wrong with that?
Do you make anything panda shaped?
OOOH. i know what you could do.
Paper Mache
You nearly wet yourself when I tried to take my sewing on holiday with me!!
Ah no. I nearly wet myself (not literally) when you wanted to take Needles on the plane
Errrr I'm not all that talented :P
How do you sew without needles? You think Nick's gonna own some??
of course he wont, but needles + planes = getting yourself shot
We all read stuff so no-one can say anything about that. Lou is always talking about sewing stuff and I have never seen a negative comment. Everyone eats and most of us who are clueless at it would love to make things.
It's a bit late for lunch so maybe naking something is an option.
I think you should have a go. They're just black and white things with eyes. My mum did it: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2009/11/21/mrs-p-joins-the-fold/
Sewing machine. Or have I forgot about something?
I forgot about that
It doesn't have to be able to fool a real panda
my friend (who loves textiles) brings her sewing machine with her when she goes on her yearly trip to the lake district with people. holidays are for fun and relaxation and doing what you want :) i bring my camera with me, nothing wrong with bringing a sewing machine :)
I think they have needles
There's needles in a machine too. I think it might have been a little over my baggage allowance!
I packed it all away in my hold bags safe and sound although you could do more with a pen than my tiny needle.
the only negative comments about sewing have been from me tbh ;)
Apart from the lugging it about y'mean? Sewing machines aren't exactly light appliances, you know. ;)
I'm embroidering at the moment like an old woman :P
Really? No, I wouldn't have thought so.
they do. I bent one this morning.. it made a rather interesting sound hehehe
I made a cross stitch Piglet a few years ago. I heart Piglet. Not the silly Winnie thing.
I misread Piglet for Piquet then. That's bad!
well.. if you're on holiday you can put it in the car... or pack it or put it as hand luggage. it's not impossible. :)
we may need a picture ;)
:D
the tao of Pooh and the Te of Piquet?
I've not done very much at the moment. My visions of sitting doing it in the shade on Nick's balcony had conveniently missed out the huge roadworks 50 metres away.... Too much dust to even breathe out there :P
Ha! Of all the drivers, he would not be my first choice to cross stitch.
I'm thinking a certain Frenchman, but even he wouldn't look good on cross-stitch. At least with Bourdais you could make it look representable...
comment of the year!! well.. so far ;)
:D
Could just do the helmet, Timo's doesn't look too hard to do.....
Ah
Quick plug for Stuart's latest... the song theme continues..

GRRR I put one comment on spc at 18:49:38 then my computer decided to hate me. First it froze so I turned it off, then it wouldn't start the anti-virus so I uninstalled & reinstalled & then it had a go at me for not having my anti-virus set up properly GRRR. All now OK. Sorry about the rant, had to let it out.
Queue suggestions for a change to the Mac world ;-)
actually i'd like to take the opportunity to moan about norton. was it norton janna?
i hear alot of moaning about Norton, what exactly do they do wrong?
Ahh norton. What a nasty word. It's a virus program if anything *shudders*
No, Virgin PC Guard. It's usually OK but every now & then Vista hates it
Norton caused all sorts of problems for me. Ate up memory, didnt actually protect my computer from viruses, kept changing settings as to what it was supposed to and basically crippled our old computer before we realised how awful it was.
& I know it's my own fault for having a PC and Vista. I'm looking to go to WIndows 7 but need to wait for my birthday (which happily is the end of the month)
where to start...
^^ oh yeah, that!
They invade the PC and kill it. Could there be a worse program out there?
Flash.
i'd rather have a virus than norton.
Hmmm.....um.....hmmmm.
:D
The nice thing about Flash it that it kills ALL platforms (Linux, OS X, Windows). Norton only kills Windoze.
Vista's fine once people know how to use it. Virgin PC Guard, however, is the most awful antivirus program an ISP can bundle with it.
May I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials for your perusal? Fast, free, doesn't take a lot of resources.
Actually I may get jumped on for saying this, but the new-ish Microsoft AV is not so bad, works well and stays mostly out of the way.
If computers were run by hamsters running in a wheel, norton would take away the wheel. And the cage. That's how evil it is.
#truefact
i'd agree with that janna.
^^^^^^^^^^^^
What 'e said. Seriously, don't discount it just because it's Microsoft. It's one of the best out there.
The Windows 7 one has been pretty good in the past few months since upgrading.
not at all. i agree paul.
What? "Microsoft" and "doesn't take a lot of resources" in the same sentence? Does this mean they are finally learning?
Well, that's 3 votes!
i think windows 7 might even run on a netbook. not tried it yet though.
Learning their own OS maybe. Dont get too excited
I hope we didn't scare Janna off with computer speak
No problem, uninstalling PC Guard & Installing Microsoft Security now. Thanks for the advice :)
Leo was plugging that recently too
OSPF BGP, IPV6 TCP/IP!!!
Christine, janna and the other Who fans about... have you seen the name of the first three episodes of the new Dr Who?
We could do ITIL again, that was fun!
Nope!
christine likes the who?
...oh him.
Yep. They sound awesome!
I don;t think they give any spoilers, just a returning enemy we all knew were returning because, yknow, they always do
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/cult/s7/doctorwho/news/a201231/first-smith-doctor-who-titles-confirmed.html
I would like to see what Roger Daltrey would get up to in a time machine
My Generation would certainly be different.
Every episode could end with him screaming. Like CSI, but good.
:D
I know maybe two songs. But I do like those two songs.
#impressed
Magic Bus?
I recently convinced my bosses at work to let me install MSE on my PC as a test instead of the de-facto Avast we recommend and install on all the PCs. So far, no viruses. I let it run a 30 second computer scan once a week in the mornings when I get into work and that keeps the little scoundrels at bay. I may push for it to be installed on all of them next month.
Am really looking forward to it, they've got some great writers for the next season
Looking forward to Richard Curtis' episode :D
Did you see the actor they've hired to take part in his episode? I won't give a name away (unless you want), but let's say he's a hollywood actor!
ooooh, I've just seen! YAY!
Is that like the Playbus?
Not exactly ;-)
*hums theme*
I am trying so hard not to do that!
It has got me looking at classic theme tunes on youtube now, here we go.
You've now forced me to load up some Who.
Am singing "Who Are You?" now
This is the best one ever. No contest!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frGLMtGsotc
I dunno... I think ol' Fireman Sam and his quick response alert is up there ;)
DUCKTALES!! WOO-OOO!!
That brings back my college days...
I like the Animaniacs theme as well.
Ha! Watching that now!
Penny Crayon was catchy as hell from what I remember *googles*
Sewing is taking too much brainpower! I think I was maybe a bit ambitious!
Don't know Fireman Sam but now have "Firemen Bold" from Trumpton in my head - Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew etc #showingmyage
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZW0ggNVhaE0
He is hero of the welsh people with his quick response, his funky bassline and his smile
When I was that age, I was a MASSIVE Thomas the Tank Engine fan. Didn't really bother with Fireman Sam unfortunately.
Oddly enough Ivor the Engine was more popular here than Thomas was. Probably because it was a welsh cartoon... not that Thomas wasn't the man (well, train) or anything, I still remember an episode where it was all foggy and someone crashed, it made me cry for hours.

Microsoft Security Essentials all Downloaded, Installed & Scan run. Thanks for the help. Off to bed now, will be dreaming of The Woodentops, Andy Pandy and The Clangers #ancientchildrenstvprogrammes
The Clangers?!
hehe :) night!
Although clearly the winner is DM

better one

Oh, I think I know which one you're on about!
Here's the original theme. Shame the original narrator died, isn't it? ;)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gXk8y7_qxY
Whatever happened to that guy? I hear some podcaster had it in for him...
Fan......................tastic! :D
What are you making?
Clangers.... oh my gods what an absolutely EPIC PROGRAMME!!!!!
I heard some guy that nobodys seen before killed him. shame really
#sidepodspace update.
Sunday morning's space shuttle launch is still on schedule. They are going to force me to get out of bed early.
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/main/index.html
Is there any money left for them to launch?
They will complete the scheduled shuttle missions. This is STS130 and the planned missions go up to STS134 then it is grounded and the shuttles get sold off
Wonderful. and the funding for the replacement is removed.
A big embroidery thingy
The replacement is ridiculous. Why does NASA need 7 years to design something they already flew 40 years ago. If you look at the 60s in around 7 years they built and flew Mercury, Gemini and Apollo and all of it hanf frawn and hand calculated. So why does it take 7 years to do a similar vehicle now with everything they already know? India with no background in manned spaceflight is going to take 7 years to design and launch their first ever manned vehicle.
Thingies are always useful. Can't have enough thingies
Minuscule funding while they continue to throw endless amounts on meaningless "wars"?
Have you seen NASA's budget? They are blowing billions achieving a fraction of what they should.
Yes. It's just a pet hate of mine when governments reduce funding on any sort of research.
Not all research is valuable or economical?
They shove rockets into space putting people's lives at risk. Where's the fun in that?
This sums up the amount of money NASA can blow. $650 million excluding launch vehicle. The private space industry is going to make NASA look amateurish over the next 10 to 20 years
http://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/2009/dec/HQ_09-296_New_Frontiers_Candidates.html
On that note guys, I'm heading off to the big land of nod. Early start tomorrow. Will doo-hickey on the train to stave off boredom and avert the gazes of wistful schoolchildren as I sit in the luggage rack! :D G'night!
you clearly haven't live commented a rocket launch.
The trouble is so long as the US government funds NASA it holds back the private space industry. NASA should be regulating the industry and government funding should go to space businesses which will do ten times as much with the same money.
Night sir.
night
They are saving lives. One day we have to get off this planet and I think we should be doing all we can now in case that day is sooner rather than later
More fun than shoving rockets in people's houses
Sorry, I don't mean to get political here.
Good night
No, but it is where innovation comes from.
night!
Sunday 9:39am UK for the launch. NASA TV will be covering the build up for several hours beforehand
Governments have to fund this stuff until they show there is some economic benefit for the private sector.
The private sector would make a fortune launching satellites that NASA makes a loss on. NASA is way too slow and too top heavy
16&G has Dallara's concepts for the next-gen Indycar, to be released officially tomorrow..
http://www.16thandgeorgetown.com/
That's a management problem. You said how good they were in the 60s.
I can't see the private sector funding a trip to the moon, let alone Mars.
They took way too many risks in the 60s. It is a miracle that people were not killed or left on the moon. The private sector will go to the moon because of the minerals that are there.
has always been the way - sailing in the 1500s wasn't exactly safe.
Not until it's too expensive to mine earth. By that time........
At least they knew the boats could float and the sails would work.
They have stuff on the moon that is not available here in sufficient quantities. The moon has deposits of Helium 3(I think that is what it is-must check) that can be used for nuclear fusion and is capable of yielding vast amounts of energy. Any private company that can secure the mining rights stands to make a lot of cash.
I am sure there will be government funded missions to the moon, Mars and beyond which will involve all the major space agencies and all the relevant governements but there is no logic in funding NASA to develop a modern version of Apollo when it won't be able to put a man in orbit for 7 years. There are plans around that could achieve the same objectives by using shuttle related equiment that could be flying in 2 years.
Neil Armstrong put his chances at 50:50 of getting back home. Michael Collins said that his biggest fear was having to return from the Moon alone.
Good point, not sure if I will see it.
anyway, must work.
Armstrong's wife was told 50:50 but she never believed it was that high
Bye
I don't see who has the right to sell the mining rights? Why would you want to destroy the moon too? Have they not done enough damage down here?
Ha! Why would you destroy a national park, or a country?!
*not here*
I have no idea how they sort out the rights. I am sure they could mine without doing much damage up there.
Why would they bother though? It's always cheaper to just rip things out and damn the consequences.
They'd need to - vacuum is their one useful advantage, they don't want to be releasing gases
The moon is basicly a lump of dead rock. There is no atmosphere or life to destroy.
You can create an atmosphere (of whatever), is that destroying the non-atmosphere?
But I like it up there. I wish they'd leave it alone. I don't trust people not to abuse whatever they find up there.
There's all the cheese.
*still not here*
Isnt it in balance with the earth or something? so would mean we'd come out of sync with something or other?
Interesting thought.
Either we never leave the planet or we have to exploit the available resources wherever we go. It make more sense to practise on the moon rather than some of the more complex places we go.
who's on playlist?
Bruce Willis will sort that out. (dont you watch any movies?!)
I'm sure I can live out my life without resorting to that! I'm sure a lot more people could as well if they'd be sensible and not destroy things.
I doubt we could remove enough bulk to do that
:)
Do we know what's in there? You could drill into it and have it all crumble into nothing.....
One day we have to leave the planet and we need to learn what we can.
In all honesty I'd rather die here....
Water, and Helium 3 like Steven previously said.
It's as solid as the Earth since they were both part of the same lump of rock at one time before there was a little incident that lopped off the moon from the rest.
maybe we'll hollow out the planet and fly the whole thing around like a big spaceship? That's my plan and I'm sticking with it!
No sense of adventure
And who knows what deep down
Who's driving?
I'd suggest that the kind of technology that is needed to make it economical is way beyond any single government or company. The US playing around with NASA is small fry.
There are exotics such as Helium 3 which may eventually be useful but for the majority of stuff, landfill will become a more economically viable option for mining.
I don't think the atmosphere would stand up to be blasted out into space
yeah but once we start we wouldnt stop. its the human way
I just know that people tend to destroy things. We've been given a pretty big planet to mess up already. I can't see why we deserve another one.
The moon sort of has an atmosphere, in that there are gases kept close to the surface by the moons gravity. But the "atmosphere's" density is so low as to not really count as an atmosphere. The moons gravity isn't strong enough to keep any significant amount of released gas close to the surface.
Christine. I have decided. I think she'd be ideal. We need a sense of adventure here and I believe she's a bit keen on the accelerator pedal.
Any moon mission is going to involve most or all the major space agencies
atmosphere smatmosphere. That's what I say. I mean I say that now, and buy the time there is no atmosphere you won't be able to hear me say it so what difference does it make? ;)
It would take a very long time to ship out that amount of bulk and there would be no benefit to most of it.
I'm not sure I heard you say smatmosphere. How do you pronounce that?
We have a whole solar system to ourselves so why not explore?
Two words: atmosphere shield
His mistake was dropping to a lower Formula after being underwhelming in F1
worked for Glock {Comment #327}
Glock scored two points on his debut. That's not underwhelming...
Someone else might want it once we've blown ourselves up....
I pronounce it smatmosphere. As in smat-moss-sphere
You know what, it will still have more atmosphere than turkey
*Gets coat
I am sure it will turn up on Giggles Radio soon enough
:D
exactly! See Pat W. I think you might be an important part of this project with ideas like that!
If all we did was destroy, then we wouldn't be here.
Yes, we do tend to destroy a lot of stuff, but on the whole I think we're getting better at NOT destroying stuff. Change will take a long time, though.
I like you Alianora.
:D
Most gas molecules are too slow to reach escape velocity but they occasionally bump into each other though and get enough of a kick to manage it. The result is that it took a long time for the moon to have virtually no atmosphere and if you pumped out loads of CO2 it would hang around.
Have you watched Avatar? {Comment #370}
I saw the 2D version last Wednesday - lots of fun. Particularly liked the plot (which sounds strange unless I tell you it seemed to have several levels of depth below the obvious three-sentence-long overaching one) and the graphics.
neat... I am planning to watch Pink Floyd perform Dark Side of the Moon on the Dark Side of the Moon. Is this likely?
Better bring a jacket, it's kind of cold over there :)
Only if there is an atmosphere or you won't hear anything
Glock scored two points on his debut. That's not underwhelming...
I like you Alianora. {Comment #654}
It's only the truth, RG :) Especially when you remember that was 40% of the team's entire points score for the year...
OMG!!! i've finally found the name of a female f1 photographer! brilliant! i was beginning to think they didn't exist!
Thanks, I do my best.
Are we taking the Sun with us or will we have to simulate it?
They're unlikely to still be around then. However, the Rolling Stones might be planning yet another come back tour...
What's her name?
Woo!
emily davenport
lick the moon?
Never heard of her
she's on twitter.
https://twitter.com/davenportemily
There is no Dark Side.
...
I'll be using that for my blog, thanks.
I have a lamp...
me neither. i only found her through looking at who James Moy follows on twitter :) but she exists, tis good enough for me :)
you should get a Helium 3 powered lamp.
Tell that to Obi Wan
Related to Calum?
Actually, I hope not
You should contact her
indeed not. As is obvious from the earthrise photo. We are so obsessed with being the center it's quite amazing.
:D
LOL !
hah
:)
maybe he meant there is no spoon
:D
Thats gannin on the wiki.
To be fair, we do that because otherwise our brains would melt. (See Douglas Adams on the "Total Perspective Vortex)
not a clue :)
Oops! Just got a "what are you laughing at" stare.
hehehehehe
gah. what is it with spam this week! {Comment #455}
You must be getting all my spam. This is the first week since I opened commenting up to anyone and everyone two-and-a-half years ago when I've received absolutely no spam...
that is a very very good idea. It's funny i've been looking in f1 racing, and on web pages for female f1 photographers for ages and never seen one.

Way to go, Emily Davenport!
I'm having creativity issues with blogging. It seems that inventing atmosphere shields and thinking of ways to simulate the sun are more interesting.
we make the mistake even when we are trying to prentend we aren't making the mistake though. That, I guess, is the problem.
Have you tried pressing that switch on the wall near the doorway?
Blog about that
it's easy to make, considering we live on the earth, because there is a side of the moon that never faces the earth.
Just have to remember we're not the center of it all ;)
oooo she has the most lovely website..
http://emilydavenport.com/
plus she has the most amazing gallery!!
Yes. It doesn't make a large orange ball appear in the sky.
Probably wouldn't go down well on a racing site.
Want to swap, I have too much to blog about in too little time.
That looks like Rubens on the front of her site
Oh, replicate? I thought you meant simulate
You have the wrong sort of light shade then
Start a space blog
Good news is she is asking for people to contact her.
Bad news is she appears to be a Canon user. ;)
i can't link to it... but the picture within the random section of her gallery of Heikki (in the renault) crashing is spectacular!!! (image 10 of 18)
She has an amazing pic of Vettel in Singapore I want to use as my wallpaper, but she's using one of those flash things that prevents me from doing so! (Good on her, as it stops people stealing them for profit, but it's a pain for me!)
*jumps up and down with excitement*
i have a feeling if i make it into the paddock i'll be a Canon user too :P
Time to head off. Big meeting in the morning concernign dissertation :( night all
Wow!
night Lukeh! best of luck for the meeting!
Good night
Night sir!
Noooooooo!
i hear alot of moaning about Norton, what exactly do they do wrong? {Comment #498}
Norton anti-virus is notoriously resource-hungry. The latest version is supposed to have an intelligent method of figuring out when to operate. Only it does the opposite of what you'd think an intelligent method should on my computer - it operates the most when the CPU is already completely busy doing other stuff and then does very little if the CPU is inactive.
At least this version is compatible with The Sims 2 and doesn't require a Windows re-install within a week of being put on, which is what happened when I last tried a Norton anti-virus program back in 2005.
To be fair, it has a very good track record of spotting and removing viruses.
hehehe not out of choice ;) Canon lend expensive equipment to f1 photographers and agencies.. it seems sensible to go with them when Nikon may not do the same thing ;)
i just read her about page (after flicking through her gallery) she says she is the only permanent female f1 photographer!
it makes this evening and the last 5 weeks totally worth while. now to compose an email :D
My colleague saw a PC today which wouldn't let its owner boot it properly because his Norton sub had expired. Without paying up, he was locked out of the machine.
!
She has done covers for AUTOSPORT, Autocourse and Auto Hebdo. You have to be good to get those. Stuart must know her then
oooo she has the most lovely website..

I'm particularly impressed by Emily's use of light and shadow. Ironically the one photo of hers I definitely have (because it appeared on the front cover of an Autosport in my collection) doesn't use this as a notable feature but still looks good.
hello sidepodpeople! I've been a little the non-interactive side of the internet (a.k.a. lurking) the last days. work year has kicked in... but I hope I'm back now. so what have I missed?
and that's something I never though I would hear. it's obviously a very good choice, and this opinion has nothing to do with me being a Canon user... ;-)
i (heart) scott speed:
@jpmontoya just tried to wreck half the field... Sure Kurt isn't happy with him lol

Bah, I just got rickrolled for the first time in about 6 months!
joe says off seasons should be longer: http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/02/04/thoughts-with-a-glass-of-wine/
(well, not exactly)
this is totally awesome. i think it's just made my year.. :D can't.stop.smiling.
Hi Guille.
Have you heard back from any of the other photographers you contacted?
If you go to a link and find the Elephant Man singing Never Gonna Give You Up then you've been Merrick rolled.
I am not very keen on Joe's latest photo of himself.
Well, actually I was barrac rolled. Great video for that one!
sadly not :( i've heard nothing from Lorenzo *sob*
I did get a few tips and advice from Clive Mason even though he seemed super busy.
i heart joe
i prefer it ot his last one!
it's no good telling me :)
You need to hassle them again before the season starts.
he seems to have morphed into the mole. is he saying that a delusional stefan-whatshisname is better then a dodgy campos?
*goes to get more wine*
It's not exactly important. I just think the last one was better. Personal taste and nothing else
i don't want to be too pushy though?
i never did get a grid explaining thirds from darren either.
he need lou to take some snaps in london...
doooo itttt
I think is the other way around....
who is/are the "deluded dreamer or two"?
i first emailed darren a few years ago and he got back to me like 6months later, i replied and still to this day haven't heard from him again.
I assumed he meant a dodgy Teixeira
I thought that too, at first
hmm london?.. what's happening in london? (i may have missed some things due to revision and the fact i haven't opened my feed reader in a few weeks).
You were not being too pushy at the end of the season and if you don't do something before the start of the season you will be in the same situation for another year. Sign up for a Gmail address and send them a short e-mail telling them that you have e-mailed them so they have your up to date details because you don't want to miss out on them sending you the advice they said earlier.

campos. stephan-something is definitely the just anywhere gangster (or at least he fits the role...)
An Aside With Joe LIVE (kinda)
i (heart) scott speed:
@jpmontoya just tried to wreck half the field... Sure Kurt isn't happy with him lol {Comment #721}
Some things never change...
alive aside (tm)
I read this to be Adrian Campos (and maybe also Peter Windsor):
"it may be that it is best for Main Street to have a deluded dreamer or two who will turn up for a bit and then default on the mortgage"
Exactly. A nice credit on Joe's site would help her profile. Lou also needs a website like a professional photographers
ahhh good plan!
Joe is doing an eveing with Joe
omg! i'm back at school by then.. but it's a friday so... hmmm i shall consult my rentals in the morning and see what they think :)
There are only 100 spaces so don't leave it too long
i wouldn't know where to start with making one :) i'm fine with flickr for the moment i think :)
is 7 hours too long? cause i can guess what the answer would be if i woke them now... :)
You need one to point photographers at. I am sure there are people round here who know how to make a website
:)
if everything fails, check JAlbum
I have no idea how many spaces are left. You could hassle Emily now though
not sure Em would want to come, i shall ask. i have a feeling that she may be wanting to come to goodwood which is awesome :)
*cough* the other one
She doesn't want to meet all the sidepodpeeps who are going
i'm sure she does (she hearts sidepodcast) but i think money may be an issue. I'll certainly ask though :)
