Morning all. Today is the day that Dom Perignon supposedly invented champagne way back in 1693. I wonder what the podium ceremonies would be like if that had never happened. We have replacement champagne these days but what if the bubbles had never been invented in the first place? Anyway, on to some of the goings on in Sidepodland:

  • There's been a blogging frenzy recently with James' experience of watching a Grand Prix with no internet. (Does not compute.) Plus Lukeh has shared some of his favourite liveries. I love this idea, and want to know everyone else's favourite paint jobs as well.
  • Meanwhile, over on the wiki, there's talk of another Sidepodshow, this time dreamed up by Nikki and Steven. As we have visitors from all over the globe, it seems only fair that we share our travel tips about where we live, to help anyone else who might visit. So get involved, tell us where you live, and share your travel pointers.
  • And in F1 news, Piquet issued a statement confirming he is no longer driving for Renault, with some scathing remarks for Briatore. It wasn't really a surprise, but I think perhaps it illuminated some of the things Piquet Jr has had to put up with. He may have more sympathisers now than he had before.

That should keep you going for a while. If not, feel free to share your thoughts on things F1 related, and not so much. I'll see you in the comments.

I had nothing to do with it. This was 100% Nikki's idea.

Apparently i have just volunteered my self to learn how to motocross...

Considering my experience extends as far as a 50cc scooter, and this is a 250cc motocross bike, it should be interesting...

Ah yes, regarding Flav the Executioner

Would've been funnier if he'd called him Flav the Impaler

How did you manage to do that?

I got my mate into F1 and he watches most races now, but he is into MX, which apparently i dont watch enough.

So i have apparently got to learn how to ride this thing in his back garden this week, then take it out on track... hopefully ending up with me watching lots of MX

They do have some awesome racing, and this season has been really good as a eurpean guy has gone over to the states and bacicly started beating them all, which as annoyed them as the US series is supposed to be far superior to the European one.

They have insane 4 bike battles for positions. Its like moto gp with 10 times the overtaking.

  • Journeyer04/08/2009 at 00:53

It makes sense... plus i tweeted JPM about it and he has kept very quiet about it...

But why would FW go to NASCAR? That would be very risky, to say the least. Isn't he struggling with funds as it is for his F1 team?

  • Journeyer04/08/2009 at 00:53

NASCAR would be cheaper, they would love to steal a team away from F1and the amount of publicity that would get would make finding sponsors very easy....

But why would FW go to NASCAR? That would be very risky, to say the least. Isn't he struggling with funds as it is for his F1 team?

I have read some odd stuff here in the past but this takes the biscuit. Williams wn't go to NASCAR

  • Journeyer04/08/2009 at 00:58

NASCAR would be cheaper, they would love to steal a team away from F1 and the amount of publicity that would get would make finding sponsors very easy....

NASCAR's only cheaper if you decide to buy your cars from someone else (like Hendrick or Roush). You know... customer cars, the very thing Williams opposes. :D

Also, can they fund both their NASCAR and F1 efforts? That'd be very hard, to say the least.

  • Journeyer04/08/2009 at 00:58

well my theory was that if certain agency's read this site, they might be sourcing their stories from here too, and if i can make this seem realistic enough they might pick it up...

Who would he take with him to pair with JPM, Nico or Nakajima? The second can bring sponsors ans crashes, a perfect combination for NASCAR!

  • Nick04/08/2009 at 01:05

Maybe if Mr C edits this a bit we can still get it to work ;)

  • Chris d04/08/2009 at 01:06

Williams-Ganassi. With Nico in F1, Danica in IndyCar, and JPM in NASCAR. That is HUGE.

  • Kostia04/08/2009 at 05:59

    Hello sidepodcast ppl!

Why didn't Brawn get penalised for the spring that hit Massa?

  • Paul04/08/2009 at 06:00

I haven't been in a rally car properly for nearly 5 years. How long can I milk past glories?

Forever I would have thought, just make it seem like last week.

I tell people I race cars, although "racing" is stretching things a bit.

  • Paul04/08/2009 at 06:02

Why didn't Brawn get penalised for the spring that hit Massa?

Probably because it was a failure on the car while on track. This happens often. It was just very unfortunate it hit Massa. Renault, on the other hand, sent Alonso back on track, knowing the wheel had not been safely attached.

  • Paul04/08/2009 at 06:08

You're a co-driver? Willing to be strapped in next to a nutter flying between trees? You're a braver man than I!!

I had a 65+ ex-racing driver take me around Oran Park last week in my race car, then we swapped seats. I'm not sure who was braver: him or me!

    The New Microsoft...

Its just a matter of time untill the business brains take over from the tech people and the software starts to glide....

Apple have always been a bit protectionist over their gear.

It's why the machines work so much better than PCs as a whole. They're not designing software for a 'puter built by any number of OEMs

  • me04/08/2009 at 11:38

    The New Microsoft...

Its just a matter of time untill the business brains take over from the tech people and the software starts to glide....

it's a difficult analogy. we haven't really experienced anything like this before, at least not on such a scale. there will be growing pains all around.

it would help if handset manufacturers could bring out a decent android handset. the OS is good enough to complete, but the phones are all shoddy.

  • Nick04/08/2009 at 11:38

As long as Steve Jobs is around, they'll be fine. But once he leaves, they'll struggle even more than MS has struggled post-Gates.

The problems often start before that, its the shareholders.

The company is legally obliged to make as much money as it can, and in the process of optimizing a massively successful company, they often lose the characteristics which made the company successful in the first place...

  • Bassano Clapper04/08/2009 at 11:38

Google's desktop OS will be interesting

  • me04/08/2009 at 11:39

Apple have always been a bit protectionist over their gear.

there is a bit of that too. you could also argue, google has lots to gain from such controversy.

  • Journeyer04/08/2009 at 11:39

there is a bit of that too. you could also argue, google has lots to gain from such controversy.

Which may be why they announced the iTunes Store rejection?

    Also true

  • me04/08/2009 at 11:40

Google's desktop OS will be interesting

i don't think google can pull off a good user experience. look at the design of google.com. it's awful. the OS will likely appeal to geeks, but will it gain traction?

  • Journeyer04/08/2009 at 11:40

i don't think google can pull off a good user experience. look at the design of google.com. it's awful. the OS will likely appeal to geeks, but will it gain traction?

didn't google.com first become popular because of its design - the sheer simplicity of it?

  • Christine04/08/2009 at 11:41

Hey, Mr C, sounds like we need to start out mediafuturechange show asap :)

  • me04/08/2009 at 11:41

Which may be why they announced the iTunes Store rejection?

almost certainly. but apple are getting heaps of bad press right now, regardless.

  • Bassano Clapper04/08/2009 at 11:41

didn't google.com first become popular because of its design - the sheer simplicity of it?

For me, it gained my vote by being good

  • me04/08/2009 at 11:42

didn't google.com first become popular because of its design - the sheer simplicity of it?

it could be much better though. google docs are awful to look at and use.

    heheh. very soon :)

    Amen to that!

    afternoon everyone :)

  • Bassano Clapper04/08/2009 at 11:42

Yet market share of sales and OS users is on the rise

The smart phone market is becoming like that of the mp3. Dominated by Apple

  • Nick04/08/2009 at 11:43

i don't think google can pull off a good user experience. look at the design of google.com. it's awful. the OS will likely appeal to geeks, but will it gain traction?

I think if you slap a google logo on a netbook it will sell better than an unbranded version of Ubuntu...

If they take over that end of the spectrum successfully, who knows where they could get to...

  • me04/08/2009 at 11:43

Hey, Mr C, sounds like we need to start out mediafuturechange show asap :)

    heheh. very soon :)

maybe we need a tumblelog to start with?

  • Journeyer04/08/2009 at 11:43

almost certainly. but apple are getting heaps of bad press right now, regardless.

in a way, though, apple seem to weather these moments better than MS does. has it significantly stemmed the flow of people wanting to get a 3GS, for example?

  • Journeyer04/08/2009 at 11:43

it could be much better though. google docs are awful to look at and use.

indeed. i don't really use it much. about the only google stuff i use are the search engine and gmail.

  • Christine04/08/2009 at 11:43

maybe we need a tumblelog to start with?

    I can do that.

  • me04/08/2009 at 11:44

in a way, though, apple seem to weather these moments better than MS does. has it significantly stemmed the flow of people wanting to get a 3GS, for example?

to early to say. it's only the geeks getting riled at the moment.

    wait until spotify gets rejected...

  • Nick04/08/2009 at 11:44

The smart phone market is becoming like that of the mp3. Dominated by Apple

Apple never dominated the mp3 market though...

they just had the most visable 5%

  • Journeyer04/08/2009 at 11:44

    wait until spotify gets rejected...

    hmmm... we shall see...

  • me04/08/2009 at 11:45

    mp3 players, I meant

  • Journeyer04/08/2009 at 11:45

they just had the most visable 5%

true, but now everyone is trying to copy/beat Apple. i think that shows how Apple is dominating this industry at the moment. in mindshare too, when you say mp3 player, most people first think of the iPod.

  • Journeyer04/08/2009 at 11:46

    you don't think it will?

don't know enough about spotify to have a proper opinion (probably because we won't be able to use it here even if it is allowed).

  • Bassano Clapper04/08/2009 at 11:46

Damn this interesting conversation, work beckons :)

    Later folks

  • me04/08/2009 at 11:46

don't know enough about spotify to have a proper opinion (probably because we won't be able to use it here even if it is allowed).

fair enough. i think it out-itunes' itunes. therefore it'll be thrown out.

  • me04/08/2009 at 11:46

    Later folks

    see ya sir.

  • Nick04/08/2009 at 11:46

    Ah yes...

The problem with smart phones is that the tech advances far quicker then the contract sales model they want to use

  • me04/08/2009 at 11:47

Damn this interesting conversation, work beckons :)

yes. on the wrong website :)

    we got work to do.

  • Journeyer04/08/2009 at 11:47

don't know enough about spotify to have a proper opinion (probably because we won't be able to use it here even if it is allowed).

looking at it now, here's what i think - if Apple allowed Yahoo Launchcast, it's possible they allow Spotify too. but again, not sure if i know enough about this to make a proper opinion.

  • Christine04/08/2009 at 11:47

fair enough. i think it out-itunes' itunes. therefore it'll be thrown out.

Does Last.fm have an iPhone app?

    :D

  • me04/08/2009 at 11:47

    very good point.

  • me04/08/2009 at 11:48

Does Last.fm have an iPhone app?

yes. but it doesn't allow for offline listening of tunes. spotify does.

  • Journeyer04/08/2009 at 11:48

Does Last.fm have an iPhone app?

i believe they do. but i could be wrong. but i do remember seeing something about it on their site.

  • Christine04/08/2009 at 11:48

yes. on the wrong website :)

You know there's no doohickey on the tumblog right? :)

  • Journeyer04/08/2009 at 11:48

yes. but it doesn't allow for offline listening of tunes. spotify does.

ahhhh. spotify allows offline? very interesting.

  • Christine04/08/2009 at 11:48

    Does it?

  • Jon Waldock04/08/2009 at 11:49

yes. but it doesn't allow for offline listening of tunes. spotify does.

does it? un-app-d spotify requires the internet to run it, so why would the app be any different?

  • me04/08/2009 at 11:49

    Does it?

yup. offline playlists i think. hold on, i check...

  • Christine04/08/2009 at 11:50

I know you can create and share playlists, but I didn't know about offline.

  • me04/08/2009 at 11:50

i think also last.fm will point you to the itunes store to buy tracks. whereas spotify doesn't.

    it points you to 7digital

i can't see apple approving that in the slightest!

  • Christine04/08/2009 at 11:55

Going back to the Ross Brawn thing, it says they adjourned it until September cos he's busy. Wouldn't the summer break be the ideal time to get stuff like going to court out the way?

  • Journeyer04/08/2009 at 11:56

i can't see apple approving that in the slightest!

agreed. for them to have any chance, it has to point to itunes.

yeah, the MS Paint + drop.io wasn't really working for me so I've switched to the backup 3G connection that only has 70mb left before it too gets capped. No wonder I've been staying up so late, my internet only gets fast after 1am :(

  • Amy04/08/2009 at 12:15

Wow... and even thats not enough?

the usual wireless around the house would be fine if only I used it but when its used by 6 people its too easy to use 40gb per month on peak. The 110gb off peak is harder which is why I hang around til after 1am :D

  • Jon Waldock04/08/2009 at 12:15

  • Nick04/08/2009 at 13:03

haha i'll not be going any faster next lesson, am not allowed on the motorway while learning :P

This rule is very silly... The motorway is probably the safest place to drive.

Some people make a big deal of it, but i dont see how not letting them learn on it will help that...

  • Journeyer04/08/2009 at 13:03

Sure is! I am really looking forward to seeing Up, I have heard its really really good.

Me too. :D I only remember Pixar ever making good movies. :) My personal fave is Ratatouille - particularly the bit at the end.

  • Journeyer04/08/2009 at 13:04

Some people make a big deal of it, but i dont see how not letting them learn on it will help that...

I guess it's because to be on a motorway, you have to be running at a certain speed so as not to impede other motorists. And they'll only let you go at that speed if they think you're ready for it.

  • Sean Golding04/08/2009 at 13:04

    Jake Blog!

    Interesting, this, from Jake:

Interestingly, after their ignominious qualifying display EJ immediately said: "Munich will be taking a look at this and deciding if they should continue." What was it about EJ over the Hungarian weekend? He called Alonso on pole, Hamilton for the win and foresaw BMW's big call... Interesting!

  • lou04/08/2009 at 13:19

she meant that girls dont care about ones that have a value, meaningful ones, so men could get away with just buying generic gifts.

    she's right, value doesn't matter.

    serious?!

  • Journeyer04/08/2009 at 13:19

  • Jon Waldock04/08/2009 at 13:19

    she's right, value doesn't matter.

wait, i meant value as in value to a person, not money value

haha, in my experience this defiantly depends on the girl!

  • Amy04/08/2009 at 13:20

    Oh. Don't agree with that.

me neither. Some of my favourite gifts ever have been cheap things but really well thought out and sentimental :)

  • Journeyer04/08/2009 at 13:21

me too, she's not really a friend, more of a friend of a friend, but the friend isnt really a friend.

she was saying that men are harder ot buy for, but i disagreed with her saying it was more equal-hardness and she said men can just by women flowers and be done with it, hense my disagreement.

    I am not here

You would think a team that went over 20 years without winning a championship while causing all sorts of trouble and claiming to be the most important team in the sport would hold back from making coments like that on the grounds of pots calling kettles black. Or in this case pots calling driven snow black. Still I guess 20 years of failure has been forgotten at Maranello now.

Just popping in for breakfast comments. Have to get ready for work, but if you haven't already, make sure you sign up to contribute to "Travels in Sidepodland" and then call and leave your contribution! I've secured some podsafe music from some local musicians and will go on about Edmonton's amazing festivals. So what's cool to do in your city/town/area?

And I am no longer here either. See you!

  • Steven Roy04/08/2009 at 13:45

I just read the full article. They are complaining that someone stuck to the precise wording of the regulations. You can see why that would upset the poor dears when they have had their diplomatic imumnity for all these years. Maybe it's kust my natural bias but isn't a special deal where your team gets £80 million dollars more than any other for doing the same thing and a technical veto a demonstration of a lack of fair play?

I got annoyed at them last time I bought something and it was all 'blah blah blah if there is not enough money in your account we will use your credit card instead" and I knew there was no money in my account, but assumed it would come off my credit card. Instead it came out of my account, I went into overdraft, and then I got charged a $35 overdraft fee. Paypal said it was my banks fault for not telling them there was no money in the account. I didn't even know I had overdraft facilities, I've never used it before.

I never, ever keep money in my main account because it doesn't pay interest. I work off a cash budget so every pay day I withdraw a set amount for the fortnight and transfer the rest straight into my savings account. I have told my bank to get rid of my overdraft because the balance of that account is always $0. I hope they listened.

PK just tweeted in Portuguese… i translated it and it came up with something very odd which i wont repeat here.

i think he was thanking all the other brazilain drivers on twitter for their support

Yes, he thanked other brazilian drivers and motorsport-related people for the support. He seems relieved that this phase of his career has ended.

I think it is a shame that his F1 career had not came out the way I thought it would, but I still think he will get a seat for next year. Probably at one of the new teams, or maybe at Williams. He drove for Williams before (Sir Frank made a shoot out between Nico and PK and Nico won the seat, but as I remember it was a close call even Nico being more experienced), and of course Frank has a lot of respect for Piquet Sr. - he was the first one to arrive at the crash scene that put Frank Williams on a wheelchair. And I wouldn't be surprised if Williams change both their drivers, with Nico going to McLaren and Nakajima going somewhere else - probably back home.

I don't believe he or his dad can find enough money to buy BMW or create a new team. He was only joking with the rumours about it.

Ah that is interesting, i hadnt thought of him going to williams...

His family still have the F3 and GP2 team. there is no way they would have spent so much money to get him to f1 and give up now, I am certain he will have a seat next year.

    #sidepodradio

I have set up a new dropio account so that anyone can upload radio shows or sections of shows. I have set the permissions so that only admins can download files so that everything is as fresh as possible for sidepodradio Sunday. I don't want anyone putting out spoilers etc. Just now Christine, Mr C and I are admins.

The new drop is unimaginatively titled http://drop.io/sidepodradio . If you upload anything to it please post a comment especially if you want us to do more than store it. I know Scott was looking for some feedback on his show for example.

  • Steven Roy04/08/2009 at 16:54

    Hi Lukeh

The worst feeling in the world is when your favourite TV show gets REALLY EPIC and you know you have to wait a WHOLE WEEK for another episode. Arrrrrrrgh.

try LOST... they make you wait 9 months

  • Amy04/08/2009 at 16:57

And this....is why i always wait for box sets to come out

I did this with the last season because its an NZ show and I got the DVDs for Christmas. I wish I'd done it with this season because the suspense is killing me.

  • Amy04/08/2009 at 16:57

ah, the last season of Lost I watched all of them in 3 days. A much better way of doing it. That show has messed with my head for too many years.

  • Nick04/08/2009 at 16:59

It also mentions races in alternate years at the Nurbergring and Spa

German friend says it means he wants a full time race at hockenheim and at the same time alternating a race between Spa and Nurbergring

  • timjclark04/08/2009 at 17:17

Greetings. I just got my daily email from autoweek magazine for their online news video cast. Here is the description from the email:

"The Senate appears poised to pump more money into the cash-for-clunkers program, Mercedes could bail on Formula One, and Lotus offers new supercharging kits . . . But Wait, There's More!.."

It always happens to me that I cannot load the videos the day they come out and today is no exception - rats! Has there been any scuttlebutt about this???

  • Steven Roy04/08/2009 at 17:20

I have never seen anyone mention autoweek videos here so can't help with that.

Mercedes is not leaving F1. That is a certainty. Red Bull are negotiating with them to use their engine next year.

  • timjclark04/08/2009 at 17:33

I found the to the actual videocast. It doesn't say very much as far as details, other than there are rumblings of Mercedes wanting to leave.

    For anyone interested:

anyone notice the updates to this autosport story?

"The original story wrongly stated 161mph. The correct speed is 100mph (161 km/h)"

    nice one.

  • Lukeh04/08/2009 at 17:42

anyone notice the updates to this autosport story?

    D'oh.

I've also just caught up with the Ferrari statement. Yeouch. Uncalled for much!

anyone notice the updates to this autosport story?

Who in the UK quotes speed in km/h?

  • Nick04/08/2009 at 17:48

Who in the UK quotes speed in km/h?

    If anyone the military?

Does make it a bit suspect where they picked the story up from...

  • Nick04/08/2009 at 17:50

No one else seems to have picked that quote about spa up that i can see other than the earth times.

It would be such a shame to loose such a great track every other year so we can go to the tedium of hockenheim

  • Jon Waldock04/08/2009 at 17:50

It would be such a shame to loose such a great track every other year so we can go to the tedium of hockenheim

There would be absolute uproar, more than we've seen from the other tracks being lost.

What is the meaning of these "speed limits"? Your puny radar is no match for the power of the darkside

{#454} I thought Piquet senior owns a huge telecoms company

No, he doesn't. PK is sponsored by one of the 4 biggest brazilian telecoms, but Piquet Sr. has nothing to do with that company.

Piquet Sr. is one of the owners of Autotrac, the first brazilian cargo tracking company (I don't know the correct translation for this, but it tracks lorries positions using gps). It is a big company, but not big enough to even sponsor PK in F1 or PiquetSports in GP2. It sponsored PK in F3 though.

Piquet Sr. had the idea to open the company while he was recovering from that terrible accident from the Indy 500 in 1992.

  • Felipe Leite04/08/2009 at 17:54

BTW, have you ever seen the Renault ad where PK lets another guy drive his Renault F1? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SR5LBQ_q700 (sorry, didn't find one with english subtitles).

The kid asks everyone if he can drive their Renaults and everybody says no. Then he approches Piquet and asks the same question, and Piquet just answers: sure! :) And the guy looks like Grosjean!

This ad was first aired in Brazil during the Germany GP. Great timing, huh?

(sorry if anyone already posted this before)

  • Chris D04/08/2009 at 18:00

    So F1 rocks!

What next? Teams painting their cars in the liveries of football teams, that's what :-/

Speaking of which - has anyone seen any reviews of the superleague formula event at Donington last weekend that wasn't lifted from a press release?

  • Pat W04/08/2009 at 18:03

Good evening. How are we all?

Speaking of which - has anyone seen any reviews of the superleague formula event at Donington last weekend that wasn't lifted from a press release?

BritsOnPole went and I spoke to them (him?) on Twitter the other day. He seemed impressed by the racing, little bit let down by car reliability but otherwise good.

  • Pat W04/08/2009 at 18:06

I haven't been in a rally car properly for nearly 5 years. How long can I milk past glories?

    Quite a while I reckon!

  • Nick04/08/2009 at 18:06

The mayor of montreal has apparently denied any deal with Bernie or f1 has been done...

This is from TSN (who are one of the biggest Canadian spots networks, who broadcast F1. Although they are 20% owned by ESPN, who in turn own F1 Live)

They are quoting a radio interview the city's mayor did with a German radio station

  • Pat W04/08/2009 at 18:06

I had a 65+ ex-racing driver take me around Oran Park last week in my race car, then we swapped seats. I'm not sure who was braver: him or me!

Ahh I think Brits on Pole might have been the way I stumbled upon the series last night. Gearbox failures wasn't it? I remember seeing the original PR when they announced this series but never in a million years thought it would actually happen, never mind get through to another year. Nice cars, very similar to the Panoz champ car chassis, but the format is too contrived for me.

    Thanks for the info.

We still have a few free slots if someone has a show idea or fancies being on someone else's show. Sidepodradio will work best if everyone contributes something.

    ...make it go away :(

  • Chris D04/08/2009 at 18:16

I think now is the time to assure you that I'm not part of the massive superleague formula PR machine!

But for pure 'morbid curiosity' purposes here's a link to some video coverage: http://www.superleagueformula.com/superleague/News-Media/Multimedia/Video-Gallery/SF-Events

I actually stumbled across all of this yesterday because I was trying to find where Robert Doornbos is moving to (he's just dumped his IRL team) - that'll teach me!

I think it's the motorsport equivalent of that lapland experience they set up in Poole last christmas.

  • RG04/08/2009 at 18:17

But the year doesn't end in a 1. Is that allowed?

We got rid of that rule last season.

Was tempted to add a Muse twibbon... but... nah. They look a bit silly.

Which reminds me, the album cover (that got revealed) today of their next album is absolutely gorgeous...

And thats my predictable comment about a certain band of the day!

Quick question for Christine. On iTunes F1 Minute for 04/08/09 says it's release date is 30/07/09. How did you manage to travel back to give today's news last Thursday & please may I borrow your time machine (especially if it looks like a police box)? :-)

JE North of Shipley prefers to take his custom to Asda where he bought Muller Rice with apple. The first spoonful tasted of disinfectant and he spat it out and returned the pot to the store. He was offered an exchange but, fearful of what he had eaten, he asked for it to be analysed instead.

In the Christmas special of Doctor Who when the doctor's just regenerated, he says "Don't you think she looks tired" and it was meant to bring down her government, can someone explain to me how? why?

Is it just so people question Harriet Jones's health?

  • Nick04/08/2009 at 20:13

I can honestly say i have never seen a question which i would struggle to answer as much as this one!

  • Lukeh04/08/2009 at 20:14

Is it just so people question Harriet Jones's health?

Yeah. she had no vote of confidence and people wanted her to stand down because of rumours of ill health. The Doctor started the rumours by saying that.

Possibly an allusion to Margaret Thatcher - I seem to remember similar comments just before she went - polite code for "can't cope with the job anymore"

  • Maverick04/08/2009 at 20:17

How come Bernie doesn't look tired?

  • Lukeh04/08/2009 at 20:17

I think that if you think Tony Blair and George Bush started World War 3 just to make a quick buck, then you've been reading too many conspiracy theory books.

    I'm sure it looks great..

It's colourful!!! And abstracty. I like abstract art!

It also looks like a giant eye, which seeing as the album will have themes of 1984, is probably no coincedence. Considering the last album had the 4 horsemen on Mars chatting, I prefer this. ;)

these two places are not close, and i had quite an adventure!

There's a term for that, but it's not appropriate for a family friendly website like this ;)

  • Dan Brunell04/08/2009 at 21:13

My dad once went round the whole monopoly board (as in real life places) in a day for charity once.

So he has been to Atlantic City?

This is why they made Twitter...

  • Nick04/08/2009 at 21:15

only 2 stops on the Jubilee?

This was tube strike day back in june... and he also implied it was a bout 2 streets away

  • RG04/08/2009 at 21:16

2 stops on a tube is aaaaaaaaages away when you walk it.

  • lou04/08/2009 at 21:16

2 stops on a tube is aaaaaaaaages away when you walk it.

depends if you know the shortcut ;)

  • Maverick04/08/2009 at 21:17

    Pub crawl sorted!

I did a bank statement pub crawl once. Somebody stole my debit card and then went round loads of pubs having a drink and getting cash back before it was cancelled. A mate and I later followed my bank statement - it was reassuring that the thief sustained severe liver damage in the process of the crime.

  • Pat W04/08/2009 at 21:17

  • Chris04/08/2009 at 21:19

Depends... Some stops are realy close.

I once read that the most used tourist route on the tube is Leicester Square to Covent Garden. Trouble is, it's quicker to walk then get the tube!

  • Lukeh04/08/2009 at 21:19

First time in London it was.

the first time I went to london on the tubes was for the meetup in April. Needless to say the tubes because big scary monsters that day :(

It's wierd because even on my first time on them... I didn't have any problems. Hell it all went smoothly. perhaps... too smoothly....

  • Pat W04/08/2009 at 21:19

Embankment and chairing cross are all part of the same station

They claim Bank and the other one are the same station linked by a tunnel. They lie. It is a long, long walk..

  • Maverick04/08/2009 at 21:19

But surely you did too as you were following his route drinking?

I had a huge bill to forget about (bank accepted responsibility in the end)

  • RG04/08/2009 at 21:20

Swiss Corner, Swiss Cottage, more or less the same thing.

  • Chris04/08/2009 at 21:20

  • lou04/08/2009 at 21:21

  • Pat W04/08/2009 at 21:23

tell them how expensive each journey is, even with Oyster

  • RG04/08/2009 at 21:23

Its a shame giggles radio didn't go to Swiss corner.... or maybe it did!

Now I'm starting to think Swiss Corner is a good idea for a muller yoghurt.

  • Jon Waldock04/08/2009 at 21:24

ah, but if you buy a railcard (which i pressume lou does) then it dosent make any difference

tomorrow i'm going to get a travelcard into london, >£15 with unlimted tube travel

  • Lukeh04/08/2009 at 21:26

    whyzat?

From experience, when I buy my ticket to London for a day return it includes with it a travelcard to go on any route on the udnerground as many times as I like.

  • lou04/08/2009 at 21:26

  • Jon Waldock04/08/2009 at 21:28

Oh right. I think the maximum Oyster spend is 5 or 10 quid per day?

Ah but if you have to travel into london aswell, it's cheaper to go with a travel card

Blimey is that my new catch phrase? .. MrC thought I was drunk yesterday :(

aww :( so why don't you have a 'v' on your keyboard Jackie? is it something similar to Mr C's question mark problems?

  • Jackie / saltire04/08/2009 at 21:32

    Are you avoiding the question?

    What question?

  • Lukeh04/08/2009 at 21:32

Jackie, have you ever seen V for Vendetta? That little game there would've been perfect for V's speech at the start :D

  • Pat W04/08/2009 at 21:33

    Hi Jackie.

  • Maverick04/08/2009 at 21:33

    What question?

    Are you drunk?

  • Nick04/08/2009 at 21:33

Oh right. Is this within a certain radius of London? 'Cos when I go they always ask me if I want one for extra money, I say no 'cos I've got an Oyster. I got one because I visited my sister a few times a year and it seemed cheaper that way.

much cheaper with a travel card, its only 4 more on my ticket which is cheaper than a single tube journey

  • Jackie / saltire04/08/2009 at 21:33

aww :( so why don't you have a 'v' on your keyboard Jackie? is it something similar to Mr C's question mark problems?

  • Lukeh04/08/2009 at 21:35

Jackie, have you ever seen V for Vendetta? That little game there would've been perfect for V's speech at the start :D

Concerning this, this is V;s speech for those that don't know it... you may want to take hold of your brain just in case:

Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin van-guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it is my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.

    V-tastic.

  • lou04/08/2009 at 21:35

    didn’t google.com first become popular because of its design – the sheer simplicity of it? {Comment #250}

A lot of people regard it as simple, but I could not and still cannot find most of the functions I'd want to use for it. That and the (in)accessibility issues put me off everything except YouTube (and even then I use Last.fm for most of my video services these days).

    Hi Alex. Uncle Giggles?

A lot of people in my life call me Uncle Al even if I am not their uncle. I think I may be rather avunclular in nature.

This chap, Theo, is my fiancé's brother's son. So he's close to nephewdom.

  • Pat W04/08/2009 at 21:55

i love how it's set for 11.30, most people would just be up by then automatically, but you sir, are special in this fact

ahah i need to set my alarm, if i don't i would honestly sleep in till like 4pm..

If I'm until 2 or 3am I can easily until midday, especially alcohol-aided.

  • Alianora La Canta04/08/2009 at 21:55

    A roads are multi lane, and you do 70mph on those? whats the difference between a 2 lane a-road to a 3 lane motorway {Comment #330}

If you suddenly start driving like a fool on an A-road, the instructor is legally permitted to pull you over to the side of the road, as a general rule.

The motorway is different - unless there's hard shoulder available, cars can't stop and even then it's supposed to be reserved for cars that, for whatever reason, cannot move to the next turn-off. While the police are allowed to pull drivers over to the hard shoulder, the idea that driving instructors should have the same privilege hasn't gained any currency. Until it does, it will be impractical for learners to be permitted on motorways.

  • lou04/08/2009 at 21:55

is he running from John o'groats to lands end or something?

I can buy presents for some people (who have pretty specific ideas about what they want) but not for others (who either don't really know what they want or seem to have everything they want). As one of those people who rarely knows what she wants (except that books generally go down well), I can't complain too much though!

    NICK! What's the USGP news?

  • Nick04/08/2009 at 22:16

    When and where?

Bernie says it defiantly wont be happening.

If we use EJ to translate this like he did with Silverstone, it means it is very likely to happen..

  • Alianora La Canta04/08/2009 at 22:17

    Ferrari take a leaf out of Piquet’s tantrum book: {Comment #361}

This is considerably sillier than Nelson's rant. At least Nelson might have had a point, however lost it was in a forest of angry words. Ferrari had no such point.

  • Nick04/08/2009 at 22:17

    NICK! What's the USGP news?

He also said montreal is back on but they mayor denied this, so i expect its all part of his negotiations for a race in the states...

  • Joe in Fla04/08/2009 at 22:18

If we use EJ to translate this like he did with Silverstone, it means it is very likely to happen..

I read where the GPC is still at an impasse with Bernie over the money and if there is no GPC, it makes it harder for a USGP. Unless it's later in the season at they are on their way to Singapore. But I'll believe it when I see it

  • Alianora La Canta04/08/2009 at 22:19

I was also at USGP 2005, but stayed 35 miles from the speedway, so drinking and driving was a concern, thus Indy's nightlife was not sampled by me. On the other hand, the Metro in Montreal meant I could party and hang out all night and not worry about driving.

I think he was generally unimpressed with going through a fairly industrial area to get to the Montreal track, so that may have put a downer on it for him. It's a while since I spoke to him about it so I'm a bit hazy.

Most of the A-roads round me haven't got a hard shoulder, but do allow parking on the roadside. Some of them don't, which is a bit of a nuisance because the Law of Stupid Consequences mean these are the A-roads where such a facility is most likely to be needed (particularly so that recovery lorries have somewhere to dump crashed cars).

Speaking of this, why hasn't Formula One done a crossover show. For example there are TV shows in America go to all the hottest parties in the world. F1 and Bacardi should sponsor Kimi as he travels around the F1 world going to the hottest parties over a race weekend and make a TV show out of it. Who wouldn't watch that?
