We are halfway through the week now, as Wednesday has arrived. I thought yesterday might have been a Thursday, it wasn't going very well - particularly for US F1 - but apparently we still have one of those to come this week. Meanwhile, here's what's happening at the moment:

  • As mentioned, yesterday was not a good day for US F1. The team have ceased operations and the entire handling of the situation doesn't reflect well on Anderson and Windsor. Apparently they are still keen on entering the sport in 2010 - but who would be keen to work with them now? Have your say over on the dedicated thread.
  • You have to feel sorry for all the employees, but Jose Maria Lopez looks like he's got somewhere to go. The Argentinian driver appears to be ready to join Campos as reserve driver - but is that just jumping from the frying pan into the fire? At least he gets the chance to remain in F1 which is the first step.
  • I released the third episode of the four-part F1 Digest 2010 Season Preview special. This time round we're looking at the calendar, so expect a trip round the globe as I give you a brief overview of what to expect at each circuit. Except for Korea because they haven't actually built that one yet.

That's all for now, it's the middle of the week, so it's all downhill to the weekend from here. I will see you in the comments.

I went quiet because I was doing the results of the game. Entries are open for Rally Mexico and Cup at Atlanta.

I really hope to get some more players when F1/IRL rolls around, and I'm very glad to those who have done so already. Thanks :)

I'm relatively saddened by the fact that I think I've stopped caring about LOST. I'm sitting here trying to get into the re-run of last weeks episode that I missed, and it's just not as appealing as it used to be to me.

I almost gave up in Season 4

This year, it's thick and fast and the end is in sight

I've given it 5 years, a few more months should see a rip-roaring ride

I know... And I really want to care, but it feels like the magic has worn off. Much like the way I felt while watching the final X-Files ep.

i'm loving this season. i would say the mystery has gone, but answering question will do that.

I think it might be because there is less Ben in this season. Ben has been my favorite character for so long. I always found him the most interesting.

I understood that most big cities charge for water so I expected that when I moved here but I was 100% shocked to find out that in Australia I can't call my neighbour on the phone for free. I just assumed local calls were free everywhere in the world.

They're not free here. We have local and national rates but it's not free by default on BT.

How very odd. Local calls are free here. Mobile calls on the same network are free as well. There's even a program here where your mobile gets a landline number in exchange for a small fee. Said landline number means all mobile-to-landline calls would already be free.

  • Journeyer03/03/2010 at 07:08

New Zealand is looking pretty good with its free phone calls and its free water. No wonder they call it the land of plenty :D (they call lots of other countries this too but shhh)

Oooh. We have a very small (almost negligible) water fee. Given how dirty the water can be if not cleaned, it's perfectly fine.

  • Journeyer03/03/2010 at 07:09

woohoo! Time to get transcribing those last three non-live ones. #stupidoffseason

I have a theory that Bernie is going to get the teams to agree to USF1 changing their name by offering a USGP next year.

NB: This is based on nothing but a hunch!

  • Nick in Dubai03/03/2010 at 07:46

a hangover on a Wednesday? Besides, the sun is up in Dubai by now. :)

Yeah lol. I woke him up now :D

    Thx for that!

There was no hangover though, i was to tired to drink last night thanks!

  • Neil Denham03/03/2010 at 07:49

Did not get online yesterday (I know, crazy!!!) so have only just seen that USF1 has failed, although not really a surprise. I hope Stefan can fill the gap, I was really looking forward to seeing a massive starting grid, and surely missing teams affect the qualifying procedure as well?

  • Journeyer03/03/2010 at 08:08

Very good point on this, Neil. One missing team means that we will drop 7 rather than 8 cars each in Q1 and Q2. Or at least that's what I remember.

That's assuming KA is actually willing to let go on USF1 which, so far, hasn't been the case.

Yes, I sit on my couch and use it from maybe 3.5m away from the IR pick up and no problems. We also have 3x different brands/types here in my office which people use, and no lag issues.

    Joe confirms Hispania, though.

Might it be that HRT is the official name but it'll still be more popularly known as Hispania?

I tried to extend my stay in Melbourne today. The hotel told me to do it through an online website because they couldn't book the room that cheap!

  • Amy03/03/2010 at 10:35

    hehehe.

its so odd, it had no problems with my phone number last time I booked with them but this time it won't accept my mobile or my home phone.

I started watching Lost in an attempt to woo a boy (it worked)

The boy is long gone but Lost is still here.

This is why I love Lost :D

    actually it is! Spooky.

  • Journeyer03/03/2010 at 10:55

So replace Lost with F1 and it'll still be correct? ;)

  • Nick in Dubai03/03/2010 at 10:55

If they try to race as HRT in Australia wont Holden put forward an injunction against the event/ the team. could be interesting.

  • Amy03/03/2010 at 10:56

So replace Lost with F1 and it'll still be correct? ;)

no, that was a matter of convenience after the wooing had already succeeded. I love the word woo.

  • Nick in Dubai03/03/2010 at 10:59

no, that was a matter of convenience after the wooing had already succeeded. I love the word woo.

Why are people still interested in these old men?

  • Christine03/03/2010 at 11:08

Why are people still interested in these old men?

    Because they're awesome.

    ?

    ooooo k

  • Amy03/03/2010 at 11:09

Why are people still interested in these old men?

because "The Backstreet Boys are as corny as a heart-shaped box of chocolates on Valentine’s Day, but like that item, they are a sweet treat" :D

Did you not get the memo Paul? Backstreet's back.

  • Amy03/03/2010 at 11:10

oooh flight is booked. The trick was to delete my phone numbers from my saved log-in details and then clear my internet history. It shouldn't be that hard.

  • Nick in Dubai03/03/2010 at 11:10

Did you not get the memo Paul? Backstreet's back.

I think you might be right. I don't go to concerts so to dive in straight at the deep end with a screamy boat might be pushing it :)

Tis fun hearing the people behind the film explain certain things or off the record stuff about the film, and even better when the cast get involved and it ends up being a complete joke of a commentary :)

I just find them hilarious and sometimes informative. Tis an alternative way to watch a film.

  • Amy03/03/2010 at 12:00

Only if that was done for Ugly Betty where they couldn't be bothered filming down an actual street!

the greatest film commentary is From Justin To Kelly because you can tell just how embarrassed they are to have made such a film. It makes the lame awkwardness even funnier :D

  • Journeyer03/03/2010 at 12:03

Did you like that film? I did but I don't know anyone else who does.

I'm not sure. It was definitely very interesting... but like...? Not 100% sure. :)

Did Facebook change again or have I just not been in there for a while?

  • RubberGoat03/03/2010 at 12:07

Gavin might not like them in case they point out bits that were done with a green screen ;)

I should add that I love special effects and stuff like that - what annoyed me was that they felt they had to do it for mundane things, and I don't like that because I feel like there's no need to CGI a person walking down a street.

You might think that's stupid but I think that seeing a TV programme or movie that's supposed to be done normally (and could have easily been done that way) but is completely fake goes against the art of film-making.

  • RubberGoat03/03/2010 at 12:08

It did a few weeks ago. How are you posting status updates then?

Ugly Betty isn't meant to be a great piece of art, though. It's good writing and it's funny. That's it.

    This is... interesting.

    FTA:

No news on F1 is neither good news, nor a reflection of the BBC's desire to have F1 to give you in HD: The events are being filmed in HD (as far as we know) but they are not made available by F1 to broadcasters in HD

  • Nick in Dubai03/03/2010 at 12:17

Twitter is so much better I reckon.

They were discussing it on the radio here yesterday, i think they are fundementaly different

    FB= Social Networking

    Twitter= Social Media.

They can be used for each others functions though

  • Christine03/03/2010 at 12:17

Oh. Maybe we didn't. I read that earlier and wasn't surprised so I didn't mention it. Apologies.

  • RubberGoat03/03/2010 at 12:19

    I liked this quote:

I am very sorry about the frustration caused by the Winter Olympics' impact on our schedule - and in particular on Nurse Jackie and Mad Men. We have no scheduling flexibility around these programmes, and a choice to show the Olympics therefore inevitably meant that some episodes were not shown when expected, or in one case not shown at all in HD.

This is why channels other than dedicated sports channels should show sports - somebody always loses out!

if it's already filmed in HD, why did they make such a fuss about filming in HD for the first time at Abu Dhabi?

  • Journeyer03/03/2010 at 12:22

if it's already filmed in HD, why did they make such a fuss about filming in HD for the first time at Abu Dhabi?

Either that was really the first HD filming, or it was planned/rumored to be the first HD broadcasting but it fell through.

  • RubberGoat03/03/2010 at 12:22

This is why channels other than dedicated sports channels should show sports - somebody always loses out!

Because either you (a) make everyone annoyed because all that's on is sports and not Coronation street or (b) you annoy the sports fan by compromising the coverage.

  • Maverick03/03/2010 at 12:23

Either that was really the first HD filming, or it was planned/rumored to be the first HD broadcasting but it fell through.

But but but..... I like to watch sports on tv. I don't whine when the snooker is on or the golf even though I hate those. Why should I have to pay for sky or cable to watch things?

  • Maverick03/03/2010 at 12:26

    British GP maybe?

no, a local tv station filmed (or was planning to) it separately on a second set of cameras - you should be the one in the know :-)

I guess if its just the simulator and windtunnel, they could get away with saying that is a 3rd party company?

but is it open to all 3rd party companies? i just think the STR constructor thing is hogwash.

I think as long as the design and build is done in house its a 'constructor'

The other teams used to outsource wind tunnel work to the likes of windshear so it doesnt make a huge difference. I guess the simulator is the same.

I guess the RB and STR cars are both evolutions of the RB5 so they will look similar now and diverge each generation?

Because the concept was a very good one to a patriotic American wanting to assist a startup in an exciting sport.

At least it appears Rossiter may have a seat for this year - the IRL might not be ideal, but no one in F1 seems to be shouting his name out otherwise...

  • me03/03/2010 at 17:22

i'm just going to bounce this conversation over to the daily.

nick has discovered the weirdest bug in chrome.

none of the aside podcasts play natively in the chrome browser except for the first two, and the only difference between them seems to be that the first two shows were named episodeX.mp3 and not asideX.mp3.

no other shows seems to be affected, and show length doesn't seem to have any bearing.

am i going nuts or can chrome not cope with an mp3 called "aside"?

Neither sound like a good person to represent Lewis.

I like Martin Brundle and everything, but I'd rather have someone who was used to winning represent me if I was a world champion and Martin never won a race.

Mike is a two time champ, but would you want someone who was as so little spoken as Mika was/is to rep you?

Now, if someone can find a way to jam Brundle's persistence and vocal ability into Mika's background, that'd be a good manager.

  • Jim Newman03/03/2010 at 20:27

I was looking at the wiki page for Super Aguri (dont ask), and I came across this:

"The team's assets were bought by a German businessman named Franz Hilmer who applied unsuccessfully to enter the 2010 Formula One season using the Brabham name."

I dont remember hearing anything about this when hearing about the names being thrown around for the 2010 season.

And everyone else, for that matter, but I don't think that'll happen.

  • Pat W03/03/2010 at 20:32

  • Jim Newman03/03/2010 at 20:33

If someone could do it, JPM can. I'm convinced that there isn't anything with wheels that he couldn't drive and have some form of success with.

  • Lady Snowcat03/03/2010 at 20:35

I have an autocross later this month and I dont know if I can bear the Youtubanites there giving me guff because Ken Block beat a F1 champion.

Just ask how well Ken would do in an F1 race and if they really believe he'd do half as well as Kimi has coming straight in to top flight rallying....

You can also quote how the talented Mr Loeb was ... last... in a GP2 test which is well below Kimi's pay grade....

If they don't want to discuss it just look superior and smile knowingly....

  • jpancoast03/03/2010 at 20:36

Not a Kimi fan or you are a Block fan? Or both?

I have nothing against Kimi, he seems to be having a heck of a lot more fun Rallying than he did in F1, so more power to him.

More of a Block fan, then, although if it was Pastrana or another American in the WRC I would have said exactly the same thing :)

  • Lady Snowcat03/03/2010 at 20:38

I'd like to see Montoya enter one rally and still beat him, 'cos that would be funny.

He'd only do it by hanging around and running Kimi off the track...

I laughed when I heard him dissing his NASCAR team-mate for that offence... what goes around comes around .....

Anyway if Kimi has difficulty being told where to drive, JPM would come to blows with his co-driver....

  • Jim Newman03/03/2010 at 20:38

If they don't want to discuss it just look superior and smile knowingly....

I already get enough guff because I'm a, quote, "elitist F1 fan" because I dont watch the X-Games rally. =(

You can also quote how the talented Mr Loeb was ... last... in a GP2 test which is well below Kimi's pay grade....

That was surprising. It also makes one wonder what was the setup on Rossi's car when he did the F1 test a while back. How much fuel, what ballast, etc.

  • Lady Snowcat03/03/2010 at 20:41

If someone could do it, JPM can. I'm convinced that there isn't anything with wheels that he couldn't drive and have some form of success with.

    Hmmm...

Not nearly as quickly as Kimi would...

Kimi had only 23 car races before F1 and has done 5 rallies pre WDC...

JPM took quite a while to get up to speed in NASCAR I recall...

  • Lady Snowcat03/03/2010 at 20:43

That was surprising. It also makes one wonder what was the setup on Rossi's car when he did the F1 test a while back. How much fuel, what ballast, etc.

When they did release Massa's times at the same track he was about 4 secs a lap quicker I recall....

I never saw Massa's times from that test. Must have slipped through the cracks when I was on vacation. Was Felipe using the same tires?

  • Lady Snowcat03/03/2010 at 20:47

    Yes...

Both were using slicks on the 2008 car which originally used grooved tyres... .

It was also the final 2008 car so the Barce times for 2008 with grooves and fuel etc weren't that comparable...

  • Lady Snowcat03/03/2010 at 20:54

Can't remember where the fact that BMW were probably bank rolling Sauber to some extent (a la Honda/Brawn) was mentioned as a reason why the name wasn't changed.... was it Joe?....

Given that HRT have been allowed a change that would make sense...

  • Adie03/03/2010 at 21:04

Hey everyone! Hope you're all good.

Mental week, just putting the finishing touches to the second F1Weekender - work's been stupid and It's about 6 days late. Pfft.

Not sure what the FIA are doing with Stefan GP, bet they're really pleased to spend all that money on cars etc to be denied an entry. Whether or not it was inferred that they'd get the slot if a team defaulted or not is anyone's guess.

  • Maverick03/03/2010 at 21:08

Stefan are fools. They take the FIA to court and then expect the same people to suddenly be all nice and friendly and welcome them into F1 with open arms!

Use 3rd. You can go from stop decently and you have a decent array of speed available. I used 3rd for a week while I waited for a transmission to get cleared for me to use it from the junkyard (paperwork problem) after I shot my synchros by accident when I put a GL5 gear oil in my transmission.

Maybe this will cause a big sale of backup cars. I've been looking into picking up one or an older F2000.

Pretty much. I got to drive an F2000 at the beginning of last season and it was a blast. A lot like driving a big kart, and I'm ready to graduate from karting.

This is about all I spend my cash on. I have a kart, my NASA HPDE car and my Solo 2 car. I dont have a big TV (or any TV for that matter, the one I use is my roomate's), or any luxury things. My daily driver is a boring Jetta TDi that's paid off.

I dunno how much an F3 would be, but probably well out of my price range. I'm a regular joe so I'm not rolling deep in cash.

I think that'll be the fallback plan this time. I've written it in A3 this time, and haven't got the time to change page templates to fit it all at the moment.

are you outputting print quality, rather than web quality?

  • Lady Snowcat03/03/2010 at 21:47

    What is about Japs...

In the recce stage of the Mexican Rally we have the following...

but there was drama even before the recce began for Japan’s Toshi Arai and his new British co-driver Daniel Barritt.

The pair were carrying out a test with their Subaru Impreza and completed one pass of the test stage – at an altitude of around 2000 metres above sea level – without any problems.

Co-driver Barritt later complained that there had been some interference in the intercom system, but the Japanese launched the Subaru into a high-speed roll on the second pass through the test stage. Damage was extensive and the crew abandoned the test session to allow team mechanics to find a local body shop to affect emergency repairs. Arai is expected to start the rally on schedule.

  • Adie03/03/2010 at 21:48

are you outputting print quality, rather than web quality?

No, images are 72 dpi - for the web. Made that mistake before. Had been editing images off of my camera and forgot to change the dpi and ended up with a mahussive document...:)

speaking of the iPad... this week i have realised why it is such an amazing invention for photographers.

In order to show my textiles teacher some photos i want to get printed up for my portfolio i decided to put them onto my ipod and show her from there. The quality is stunning, and they looked great!.. if only they had been larger... #needsiPad :)

    Don't tease...

Incidentally I tried everywhere for one of the Kimi style caps last year and all to no avail...

Apart from on the Kimster (and I didn't have the confidence to ask him for his cap) I only ever saw one person at the track wearing one and that was at Monza... to this day I regret trying not to buy it from him....

    Wow, very #MFC

Boston city have created an iPhone app that let's citizens "report graffiti, potholes, broken streetlights, and other urban issues in the Boston area"

    How cool is that?

Looks like you can take and attch photos of said annoyances for their perusal [and hopefully, rectification]
