We have reached Tuesday and I am busy dreaming up the final part of Life in the Fast Lane. Keep your eyes peeled throughout the day for the big finale. The voting closed last night, and I was once again surprised! I won't spoil it for you. Let's talk about more F1 related things:

  • With the start of the season not far off, it's time to start thinking about Fantasy Racers again. We've had a couple of questions about our Panda Racing league, and all the information can be found on this post. Otherwise, head on over to Gavin's blog where he has a fabulous introduction to the 2010 Fantasy Racers season.
  • Steven Roy has written a great guest post over on Viva F1 about how the FIA goes about making it's selection for new teams. It's a hot topic at the moment, with the apparent imminent failure of US F1 and the struggles for Campos. Check out Steven's view on the subject, and add your thoughts in the comments - there are some excellent opinions in there too.
  • I found myself missing testing today, it was nice to be able to check in with the action every now and again without having pressure to keep up with everything. Having said that, I'm looking forward to seeing who is legitimately fast or not. On the subject of conclusions and predictions, F1 Punter is back with a roundup of testing but from the viewpoint of bets and odds. I always find Punter's posts fascinating, even though I can never get my head round betting.

That's all for now, l hope your week is going well so far. Let us know what you're up to and I will see you in the comments.

I've been reworking the game section of my site. It is now an area of geekdom, even more so than before. :)

Final touches to be added tomorrow when I post this week's scores.

    Most definitely yes!!!

  • Bassano02/03/2010 at 00:41

  • Alison02/03/2010 at 00:42

up in North-shire or somewhere else?

I'm really not sure. I'm having a look all over. I'm more bothered about my course than where I'm going right now. I'm pretty flexible.

  • Alison02/03/2010 at 00:58

It's boring though and I find it very frustrating. University websites are, on the whole, pretty useless....

i also hate the marketing speak of each course piece. i just want a list of modules and an explanation of each module, i can work out the rest

Unfortunately, it's the way of the world these days

oh of course, but in my case, it means that me and the other 10 or so other people have come onto this course and it be completely different to all that was advertised, so its something that gets me quite riled up

  • Alison02/03/2010 at 01:04

i also hate the marketing speak of each course piece. i just want a list of modules and an explanation of each module, i can work out the rest

Yeah. I spent ages looking at this one course until Nick kindly pointed out 90% of it is about IT. It really wasn't clear and I'm not a stupid person.

  • Bassano02/03/2010 at 01:04

...so its something that gets me quite riled up

    Understandable

  • Alison02/03/2010 at 01:04

Yeah. I spent ages looking at this one course until Nick kindly pointed out 90% of it is about IT. It really wasn't clear and I'm not a stupid person.

No I think he understands the ridiculous marketing speak they use in the brochures....

Too much time spent near adverts I reckon.

Yeah cheers. I love reading student satisfaction survey results. It's hillarious. My local university had the lowest rating in the country last year. I'm pretty sure I won't be staying put!

    I will have a look.

As I said though, after my last experience, I just really want to find a course that I'm going to actually enjoy that has modules about things I'm interested.

Cos they had the money to hire and London didn't?

  • me02/03/2010 at 01:21

but, a screen is a screen. if you can work from home, who cares where home is?

But the job is all computer based so he could be on the moon and still do it

  • Jon Waldock02/03/2010 at 01:22

As I said though, after my last experience, I just really want to find a course that I'm going to actually enjoy that has modules about things I'm interested.

Yeah, i looked at alot of business courses and originally applied or business but soon realised that i enjoyed doing business but didnt want to learn more about it, 2 years was enough for me.

When i had to look at final 4 or 5 courses, i printed off all the module lists from each course, got 4 or 5 marker pens and then coloured each module depending on its topic/subject. it gives you a real good visual aid to see how balanced a sylabus is

  • Bassano02/03/2010 at 01:23

but, a screen is a screen. if you can work from home, who cares where home is?

If they're paying him from Dubai they may be able to pay him less than London rates, not to mention any tax issues

  • Bassano02/03/2010 at 01:23

but, a screen is a screen. if you can work from home, who cares where home is?

In principle, I totally agree though

In practice, we all know it doesn't work like that

  • Alison02/03/2010 at 01:24

Cos they had the money to hire and London didn't?

They're having to fork out a fortune on a visa for every member of staff. If there was anything remotely sensible about the company he's working for, I'm sure they'd look at another way of doing it :)

  • Bassano02/03/2010 at 01:24

But the job is all computer based so he could be on the moon and still do it

Wouldn't that mess with his fridge shelving system?

A quick props to the new IndyCar.com - it is actually decently designed and is a million times easier to navigate than the previous site and they have thankfully dropped the hellish white text on a black background idea.

Will Buxton will replace Peter Windsor at SPEED for 2010. Dan says Will could be the American Ted. :)

  • F1Wolf02/03/2010 at 07:20

We have European Ted with Mr. Ted Kravitz. I think we have American Ted with Will Buxton taking over the pitlane reporting at SpeedTV. All we need now is an Asian or Australian Ted.

no Teds here. The Ok guys of the past are out - Chris Goodwin has something to do with Bruno Senna's management, Chandhok may end up racing in F1 and everybody else who ever appeared on our beloved F1 channel is just hopeless :-)

  • Journeyer02/03/2010 at 07:22

And who do we end up with? Steve Slater and Alex Yoong.

I'm just hoping that with Goodwin and Chandhok in the paddock now, they might convince someone to take a job in Singapore... or maybe not.

  • F1Wolf02/03/2010 at 07:23

And who do we end up with? Steve Slater and Alex Yoong.

Yoong is the talent spotter now :-) for Lotus

  • F1Wolf02/03/2010 at 07:23

anyone read this ? found it now when googling "Goodwin Senna":

  • Journeyer02/03/2010 at 07:24

Well, if he convinced Jarno and Heikki to drive for them... I'd be convinced! :D

Good luck finding anyone in this region, though. They'd have to spend a lot of money to help him race in Europe.

    remind me?

It was something along the lines of him not seeing a wheel fly off an f1 car in a crash for 5 years or so.

It was just after the Henry Surtees tragedy, he was saying far too much and it left a bad taste

McLaren are changing their pit tours this year, they used to be something they did but didn't really tell anyone how to get them, this year they are sending out emails before the race with a 'trivia' question you have to answer (Bahrain: "How many Grands Prix are there during the 2010 season?") and they're already specifying the day for the tour rather than calling you an hour before and going 'can you get here soon?'

  • Journeyer02/03/2010 at 08:24

so it's more organized now? but wait, if you get the question right, are you guaranteed a spot in the tour? or does it work like a raffle?

  • Amy02/03/2010 at 08:24

it works like a raffle, they generally only have about 8 spots and I'd imagine a lot more than that apply.

    ...Yes!

Well, I guess that means we won't see a lot of her in the paddock at the start of the season... We'll probably see her first at Monaco or Canada.

Given her dancing background, I actually like her chances to win it all.

  • Aaron James02/03/2010 at 09:55

Oh don't get me wrong, I still want to see him and the mclaren fail horribly. But sadly, I get an increasingly Ferrari 2000 vibe from the team + driver. Button being a slightly better, less bitchy, Barrichello.

I have absolutely no idea what he is referring to. What was said about Minardi?

he said, or at least he was misquoted as saying, that the Lotus was like that Minardi, or by the time it was regurgitated by GMM: "New Lotus car worse than Minardi"

  • Amy02/03/2010 at 10:37

There was an article yesterday (translated by GMM from Turon Saromat, I think!) saying that the Lotus was worse than the Minardi he tested many years ago.

ahh. Boo GMM! In other Heikki news, the only other driver his girlfriend follows on twitter is di Grassi. The girl has good taste!

Funny story - I did an Astronomy class at Uni and one of the labs at the planetarium was conducted in the dark because we were running a simluation of a constellation globe thingy.

After about half an hour, someone started snoring. Our Professor looked at us and smiled. "Happens every bloody Year" he said, with his blunt Australian accent :D

With respect to sleepyhead, to each their own. I am probably one of the most critical people going of both Joe and pretty much anything actually, and I enjoyed it.

If the guy wanted the dirty gossip he should have stuck around and bailed up Joe toward the end of the night.

  • Alianora La Canta02/03/2010 at 12:26

    oh of course, but in my case, it means that me and the other 10 or so other people have come onto this course and it be completely different to all that was advertised, so its something that gets me quite riled up {Comment #25}

That's stupid but unfortunately common. I think only 5 out of the 60 people who signed up for my degree actually had the correct impression of what the degree did, which probably contributed to the prodigiously high drop-out rate (only 14 of us were still on the course at the start of third year, with others moving to degrees as varied as Computing, Business Studies, Health Services and Drunken Studies).

  • Alex Andronov02/03/2010 at 12:27

Can I have one day without a USF1 piece to appear so my forehead can heal from hitting it so much?

    Their former press person takes some parting shots at the team. {Comment #75}

Hold on a minute. USF1 had a PR representative for months and months and we never even knew his name (I'd vaguely heard of him in connection to IRL but had no idea he was doing anything with any F1 clients)? Says something about the quality of PR done - which almost certainly stems from a lack of stuff to PR :(

The only bright spot is that I think the day with no USF1 pieces will come within a week... ...followed by most days thereafter.

Hmmm... good point. She'll be able to wave at me through the shed window I guess... Although Adrian thinks I should have the shed face the other way and carve a hole in the back fence so I can see out across "the view".

    :)

I may need somebody to come and fit blinds in my shed ;)

  • Alianora La Canta02/03/2010 at 12:42

I was listening to the "Indian pop" station on last.fm and after an hour-and-a-half of Indian-sounding music, "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley blared out of the speakers.

I think I've had the aural equivalent of a rickroll...

  • Amy02/03/2010 at 12:42

In the canteen they have 'welsh cookies'

I stole the welsh off your facebook status and texted it to my mum last night and she sent me a whole page email today about how happy it makes her that I'm getting in touch with my heritage and making the effort to learn some welsh. I was like 'I didn't learn anything, I stole it from facebook'

It's a list of volunteers, suggested questions, and completed questions. There's only one week left, so it probably looks a bit odd.

    Are you volunteering?

well I had an idea, was rather more general so maybe appropriate for the last one

the subject of why we blogged cropped up yesterday, and I was wondering about something along those lines - although I think (hope) in a more interesting way than simply asking "why do you blog?"

Seems like a weird thing to cut these two stations as they appear to be a drop in the ocean?

As I understand it, 6Music is Digital Only? I've never listened to it, but I wonder what will happen to Adam and Joe?

A final point to add is that F1 in many countries usually changes channels because it gets too expensive...

As I understand it, 6Music is Digital Only? I've never listened to it, but I wonder what will happen to Adam and Joe?

I really like 6Music. Without wanting to get too political it seems a really weird decision because they are both niche stations which commercial radio won't be able to support. Also 6 Music costs less to run than paying for Chris Moyles for a year. 6million for 6 Music, 6.5 for Moyles. I believe this is the BBC saying in the most public way, "look you've hurt us", without having to loose too much.

  • me02/03/2010 at 13:25

  • Jim Newman02/03/2010 at 13:33

    Good morning folks.

I just got a notification in my phone saying that Lewis has finally gotten rid of Daddy. I was hoping to see an all out family brawl between the Hamilton's and the Button's when the McLaren garage inevitably melts down this season.

  • me02/03/2010 at 13:34

So what do you think they should do instead?

concentrate on non-commercial sports, or sports that will never be picked up by commercial broadcasts.

  • Journeyer02/03/2010 at 13:34

Just because Anthony is no longer the manager, it doesn't mean that he won't be in the garage anymore...

  • Lukeh02/03/2010 at 13:34

some of Radio 1's shows are shocking. Others are pretty fab. It's a bit of a marmite station I find.

  • Journeyer02/03/2010 at 13:35

I think I'm getting old because I find R1 unbearable quite often :)

what time of the day do you listen?

  • Lukeh02/03/2010 at 13:35

concentrate on non-commercial sports, or sports that will never be picked up by commercial broadcasts.

    Like downhill bobsled formula curling.

  • Pat W02/03/2010 at 13:35

they pay Jo Whiley how much?

I liked her... ten years ago. I actually think she'd be better off doing a 'new music' show on Radio 2 now.

  • me02/03/2010 at 13:35

    Like downhill bobsled formula curling.

    :D

The playlist is 1000x better than what they have here. The presenters dont really add anything for me though. Its usefull to have somone like zane lowe, but moyles and the like are just being payed to yabber

  • RubberGoat02/03/2010 at 13:36

So what do you think they should do instead?

So a website equivalent of Grandstand. Fair enough.

If you remove all of the F1 coverage from the website you lose all of the resources and articles though. Ted's testing reports, Jake's blog. I think those things are worth keeping. Make it more of a features rather than a news based micro site...

  • Jim Newman02/03/2010 at 13:36

Just because Anthony is no longer the manager, it doesn't mean that he won't be in the garage anymore...

One can only hope... After three years of seeing annoyingly constant camera cuts to Anthony watching a monitor and shaking his head, we've finally have a chance to see him and Papa Button do something of entertainment value.

  • Pat W02/03/2010 at 13:36

what time of the day do you listen?

Going to work in the morning and going home in the evening. To be fair, those have always been pretty bad as they are catering to different people at that time. I stopped listening to the rest some time ago purely because I can't at work.

  • Alex Andronov02/03/2010 at 13:36

The playlist is 1000x better than what they have here. The presenters dont really add anything for me though. Its usefull to have somone like zane lowe, but moyles and the like are just being payed to yabber

They'd contract Renault to make the curling pucks and they'd break all the time.

    Wait... you mean 'at all'?

    Who should then?

  • Pat W02/03/2010 at 13:38

Moyles does not make 6.5 million, no way.

those sources are 4 years old

  • Amy02/03/2010 at 13:38

    Like downhill bobsled formula curling.

we decided at work that 'ice sledge hockey' is the coolest name of any winter olympic sport but since its the paralympics we will never see it.

  • Maverick02/03/2010 at 13:38

My colleagues wondered what would happen if Red Bull took over curling?

the drink would freeze to the ice for starters

  • Nick in Dubai02/03/2010 at 13:38

    But that's what people want.

    perhaps,

Maybe the bbc cant cover everything in its charter anymore.

Perhaps it needs to decide between giving the entertainement people want and the things people cant get elsewhere.

  • Alex Andronov02/03/2010 at 13:39

    But that's what people want.

A lot of people say, "yeah I like this bit of the BBC, but why do they have to do all this other stuff that I never use". Forgetting for other people it's exactly the reverse.

I have only ever seen 2 episodes of Eastenders but I love Radios 2, (bits of) 3, 4, 6 and 7. Apparently some people are the other way around :)

  • Maverick02/03/2010 at 13:39

Moyles does not make 6.5 million, no way.

he has a contract like that, but it isn't per year

  • me02/03/2010 at 13:39

  • Jim Newman02/03/2010 at 13:39

but i LIKE it that they do have f1. they're doing a much better job of it than ITV did.

I completely agree. Better presentation, better into (the intro to ITV's recent F1 broadcast was very poor), better commentators. The combo of Eddie, David and Jake work excellently.

  • Alex Andronov02/03/2010 at 13:39

  • Lukeh02/03/2010 at 13:40

    no.

so you'd rather have it on ITV, given what they did with it?

  • Pat W02/03/2010 at 13:41

Perhaps it needs to decide between giving the entertainement people want and the things people cant get elsewhere.

It always does this though.. Swings from one to the other. In the report I linked it talks about 'youth' programming. It was originally set up because the BBC felt it wasn't serving that part of the population - now they are being canned because they say Channel 4 should do it. I happen to agree with the latter but it seems a waste of time..

  • Amy02/03/2010 at 13:42

Does your company not have rights?

    oooh the paralympics are #MFC

Paralympic Sport TV (paralympicsport.tv), which is the Internet TV channel of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), will offer international free online live and recorded coverage of the games, everyday from 9:00 to 22:30 PST

  • Nick in Dubai02/03/2010 at 13:42

so you'd rather have it on ITV, given what they did with it?

    There other options... CITV :P

  • me02/03/2010 at 13:42

so you'd rather have it on ITV, given what they did with it?

i'd rather that the bbc weren't in a position to step in and offer up the money. bernie would have had to cut his rates to what the market will bear.

  • Pat W02/03/2010 at 13:42

Does your company not have rights?

not that I'm aware of, all the olympic channels switch to 'coming soon: 2010 commonwealth games' soon

Ah. I know the BBC lost the Paralympic rights, Channel 4 have them. I don't remember ever watching them before..

  • Alex Andronov02/03/2010 at 13:42

    that's true, but you're aren't paying to line bernie's pocket :)

Were paying before too. We pay for the products in those adverts. Personally I can see very little argument for the BBC to cover football... but F1? I think there is an argument that commercial stations can't cover F1 properly because they need to put adverts in the coverage.

  • me02/03/2010 at 13:43

Were paying before too. We pay for the products in those adverts.

but i wasn't (we've had this discussion before).

  • Amy02/03/2010 at 13:43

Ah. I know the BBC lost the Paralympic rights, Channel 4 have them. I don't remember ever watching them before..

I've never watched a winter one before but I've watched a bit of the summer ones, some of the stories of the athletes are amazing.

i'd rather that the bbc weren't in a position to step in and offer up the money. bernie would have had to cut his rates to what the market will bear.

true. but i don't think bernie's ever been put in such a position. someone's always managed to come up with the money he wanted (or most of it, at least).

Yeah I'm like that. Moyles can grind a little after a while, but Zane Lowe is really good - really appeals to me and a good R1 source for new music.

How Whiley still has a job there astounds me. EJ could do a better job, which is harsh perhaps, but bleh!

    Hang on, F1 news first.

How does the name Hispania Racing F1 Team strike you?

The name change may also augur a move by Jose Maria Lopez to Hispania.

  • me02/03/2010 at 13:47

indeed... And if everyone did what you did then how could anyone other than the BBC cover F1?

nascar has ads mid-race and it's fine (although there are a lot of them). commercial companies need to adapt with things like picture-in-picture, and pay-per-view content, but it's hardly an impossible hurdle to overcome.

the usa has plenty of televised racing and it doesn't have a bbc model in place.

  • Lukeh02/03/2010 at 13:48

    fact??

oh, what i meant is it would still end up with the Beeb, which is where we are now.

my argument is though, that the bbc should not be allowed it.

it depends on how you'd view BBC. if i were paying for it, i'd want to watch something i want to watch, not some barely-heard-of sport i'd never be interested in.

My computer has just rejected the script to reveal the pending comments in Ye Newey... ...possibly because I left the window open on the Daily while making and eating lunch, resulting in 186 pending comments by the time I got back to the computer!

oooh, browser may have run out of memory. interesting.

But then you lose ad-free TV and the iPlayer becomes horrendously expensive...

i don't really use either, and even iplayer addict christine is buying more on itunes.

    OK.

Using Denmark as an example - three different networks have an iPlayer equivalent. None are even a tenth of the BBC one. Each costs £50 a year or more depending on the package. That's a lot of money...

  • Alianora La Canta02/03/2010 at 14:03

Changes at the Beeb (not F1..yet.. I hope)

    http://news.bb...rtainment/8544150.stm {Comment #385}

F1 is probably (but not certainly) safe on the grounds that it fits the fifth criterion "events that unite the nation". An audience of around 4 million suggests that F1 does in fact unite the nation rather well (only football, a few soaps and reality TV do better, the BBC can't afford much football these days, it's under fire for the amount of reality TV it does have and new soaps need lots of time to bed in and garner an audience).

Smaller sports might not be safe though.

  • RubberGoat02/03/2010 at 14:03

wouldnt that mean they had to have adverts?

    of course.

and compete equally with everyone else.

The thing I always loved about the BBC was no adverts. I hate adverts - to the point where I refuse to watch a TV program until I have taped it so I can skip 'em!

  • RubberGoat02/03/2010 at 14:03

we have an iPlayer equivalent, it doesn't cost me anything as such because we don't have a license fee (although clearly my taxes pay for it). But it's there. I should use it more, theres some good stuff on there!

Other than live sport ads dont really annoy me though because I guess I've always had them on every channel so I've never had the 'bbc model' to get used to.

    I agree. Archive stuff and new stuff. Whereas something like 1Xtra seems to be something commerical can (and does) do? I'm not sure as I don't listen to it. {Comment #422}

Commercial radio can do what 1Xtra does - but only, it seems, in highly urban parts of the country. Mind you, digital reception is so abysmal here that the only way I could listen to any of the digital BBC stations is online... ...at which point last.fm and my stash of MP3 files tends to be my listening material.

Digital switchover is going to be horrible - the TV is now nearly unusable. Not only has digital become nearly non-existent but analogue has been steadily deteriorating as the switchover nears. At this rate I can see my household being forced to either pay for a cable service it can't afford or be restricted to watching TV online only.

I really don't mind ads that much on the tv, but I really really hate ads on the radio for some reason.

I think a lot of the way the commercial stations are being forced to change and give away vast amounts of content online is because they are competing with the BBC. Take that away and I think "entertainment" in the UK will be a lot more expensive.

    me too.

What I am trying to get at is, I see the BBC differently to you because I am overseas. I am a freeloader, if you like.

I guess my view of the BBC is of a content provider, cultural icon and voice of the people rather than a competitive channel. I certainly don't think about usage of my licence fee ;)

  • Alex Andronov02/03/2010 at 14:26

if the beeb canned r4 as well as 6music, you'd probably agree :)

Just to be clear here... All of this confusion about the role of the media is something I very much agree in. I would imagine a few short years from now that we will be dealing with the death of all of these stupid old distribution systems. I want a world in which we have content creators and content consumers and some lightweight infrastructure in between. Personally I think any system that drives all of the incumbent distribution networks out of business is a great one.

  • Journeyer02/03/2010 at 14:26

    I think so

unless BMW have a strange agreement about leaving the name on as part of selling the team so cheaply

  • Alianora La Canta02/03/2010 at 14:28

    They're also all going out of business, of course. {Comment #568}

Not all of them - my local station's found the money to give away a large and controversial prize recently to drive up ratings via a "reality radio" series. It's also stopped advertising for adverts, which it had been doing continuously for five years, because all its ad slots (from what I can hear when listening to the station) are full. Which would tend to imply that it, at least, is richer than before.

There is no sector of the media that is being completely killed off by #MFC, #BBC or any other market force out there. Organisations are simply having to creatively improve themselves or be destroyed.

  • me02/03/2010 at 14:29

I guess my view of the BBC is of a content provider, cultural icon and voice of the people rather than a competitive channel

i really don't see them like that any more.

competitive self interest and self preservation seems ripe within the organisation. i don't believe i derive value from them anymore, and i suspect they're killing media innovation within the uk.

best of all they get to that with... other people's money. nice work if you can get it.

  • Alex Andronov02/03/2010 at 14:29

I'm not particularly sure what you mean? If they got rid of it I would be more likely to want get rid of the BBC? It's possible. My guess is if Radio 4 is gone the BBC doesn't exist any more.

  • Alianora La Canta02/03/2010 at 14:30

    because they can only change it once i believe, and Sauber are still looking for a title sponsor, so if they get rid of BMW now they cant change until next year {Comment #575}

They also can't change it without unanimous agreement from the teams unless they wait for the next year of entry.

You know why they made this eh? Because Aston need to make a small car with lower CO2 output, else they'll get legislated out of business... For example, Porsche and Ferrari 'distribute' this problem amongst the VW and Fiat families respectively...

    Yea, I saw that this morning. Does Lopez have a Super License yet? Last time I heard he still hadn't been issued one. {Comment #489}

I don't think he can get a Superlicence and therefore can't have one at present. He could have applied for special consideration to the F1 Commission, but it's a minimum requirement to have done 300km in a F1 car at competitive speed first and he hasn't had the opportunity to do that.

He won't be on the grid in 2010, whatever happens. A sad story, but the regulations are strict on this one. The best he can do is be a second-string "unofficial reserve", do GP2 and apply for a licence upgrade mid-season. At that point he could replace either a race driver or the official reserve.

Its a good idea, as long as they keep that exclusivity.

Its almost imposible to park an aston in a busy city, they be huge cars!

  • Alianora La Canta02/03/2010 at 14:44

Well ITV would love to be able to do picture in picture but they are banned from doing it. We do need to fix that really.

agreed. problem is they were never forced to address it.

    the beeb just walked off with the rights. {Comment #497}

OFCOM aren't going to agree to picture-in-picture simply to increase ad revenues. To them, it increases consumer confusion and decreases programming quality (all stations are expected to meet minimum standards if they use either analogue or digital TV - as opposed to the internet - as a medium). The requirement to have minimum standards gets the government money from the fees that channels pay them to have an operating licence in the UK. If the BBC wasn't around, the restriction would still be in place because the operating licences are a cash cow for the government and it wouldn't want to lose any even if it could afford it (and it can't due to mass financial mismanagement on its part).

  • Jon Waldock02/03/2010 at 14:46

Its a good idea, as long as they keep that exclusivity.

    seriously?

its like building a car and then saying "we're only going to let x amount of people buy it"

most Aston owner arent going to buy this, the people who will want one are the people who dont have 150k to spare and want to be able to say "i own an aston" even if it isnt a proper one

some will, but people buy Aston's because of their looks and their style and herritage and because its an aston, but these arent real astons, they dont share that passion and focused design that the normal astons do.

im sure they'll sell some, but i wouldnt go near one with a barge pole

  • Alianora La Canta02/03/2010 at 14:49

    How do you get banned from doing PIP? {Comment #498}

OFCOM (the government regulator for TV and other communications media) has a blanket ban on any station with an operating licence in Britain (this includes all analogue stations plus any which use digital TV channels such as Freeview) from doing certain things with their adverts to maintain a minimum standard of programme delivery. One of the things they ban is picture-in-picture viewing, partly to avoid confusing the stupid and partly to avoid spoiling the entertainment of the intelligent (all programming on a given channel has this limitation, hence why it looks particularly incongruous when applied to, say, sports programming).

ITV wants to broadcast in the UK, therefore it abides by the restrictions. The advertising it did in F1 took it right to the limit of what was permissible under OFCOM regulations.

  • RubberGoat02/03/2010 at 14:49

most Aston owner arent going to buy this, the people who will want one are the people who dont have 150k to spare and want to be able to say "i own an aston" even if it isnt a proper one

The problem there is that they will lose the exclusivity of the brand

    very much so. but if it was a case of pip, or no terrestrial f1 coverage, that might just force the issue. {Comment #508}

It wouldn't. ITV has to pay the same money to OFCOM whether it has F1 or not so OFCOM won't care where F1 is broadcast. The digital channels F1 would arrive at likewise. The only part of the public system which does is the BBC and possibly some backbench MPs.

  • Alianora La Canta02/03/2010 at 14:59

    So why did the FIA not object when USF1 announced him as a race driver? {Comment #616}

Because it was back when there was a chance that he could have done the requisite mileage in Alabama with the team. Back then the FIA believed USF1 might eventually show up for a race. And if the FIA had had doubts about USF1... ...then it might have assumed that Lopez's F1 chances in 2010 would disappear simultaneously.

Also, 5 Live have pointed out to me that the mileage can be done in straight-line testing. So if Campos/Hispania put him through 400 runs of Santa Pod in a 2-day period prior to application, he could get round the superlicence problem that way. He couldn't be formalised as a reserve until the F1 Commission decides whether it's enough though, not if I've understood the rules correctly.

Had we had this discussion in 2007 or 2008, José wouldn't have needed to jump through so many hoops. He didn't qualify for an automatic licence, but he did enough F1 mileage with the Renault test team, combined with enough GP2 experience, that he could have reasonably acquired one via the Commission. However the mileage has to be done within 90 days of application and any championship results only count from 2 years at that level (F3 only counts for 1 year).

  • Jon Waldock02/03/2010 at 15:06

The driver must be the holder of a current FIA International Grade

    A licence.

5.1.2 The driver must also satisfy at least one of the following

    requirements:

    a) have made at least 5 starts in races counting for the FIA

Formula One World Championship for Drivers the previous

year, or at least 15 starts within the previous 3 years.

    b) have previously held the Super Licence and have been the

regular test driver with an F1 World Championship team for the

    previous year.

    c) been classifi ed, within the previous 2 years, in the fi rst 3 of

the fi nal classifi cation of the F2 Championship, or of the fi nal

classifi cation of the GP2 Series, or of the final classification

of the GP2 Asia Series or of the fi nal classifi cation of the

    Japanese F/Nippon Championship,

    d) been classifi ed in the fi rst 4 of the fi nal classifi cation of the

Indycar IRL series within the previous 2 years,

    e) be the current champion of one of the following:

    - Formula 3 Euro Series

    - The principal national F3 championships of: Great Britain,

    Italy, Japan, Spain

    - World Series F/Renault V6

N.B.: the title of Champion is considered valid for 12 months from

the last race of the relevant series or championship season.

    f) be judged by the FIA to have consistently demonstrated

outstanding ability in single-seater formula cars, but with

no opportunity to qualify under any of c) to e) above. In this

case the F1 team concerned must show that the applicant

has driven at least 300 km in a current Formula One car

consistently at racing speeds, over a maximum period of 2

days, completed not more than 90 days prior to the application

and certifi ed by the ASN of the country in which the test took

    place.

By exception, if supported by the Safety Commission, the

FIA World Motor Sport Council may approve the issue of the

Super Licence to persons judged by the Council to have met

the intent of the qualification process.

    The list:

Automatic if done in the previous 3 years:

    - 15 starts in F1

Automatic if done in the previous 2 years:

    - Finished in the top 4 of the IRL standings

    - Finished in the top 3 of the GP2 championship standings

    - Finished in the top 3 of the F2 standings

    - Finished in the top 3 of the GP2 Asia standings

    - Finished in the top 3 of the Japanese Formula Nippon standings

Automatic if done in the previous year:

    - 5 starts in F1

    - Official "regular" F1 test driver (note this is distinct from being a "reserve" driver, though all "reserve" drivers also count by this definition provided they are regular). No definition of "regular" appears in the regulations

    - F3 Euroseries champion

    - F3 champion in Britain, Italy, Japan or Spain

    - World Series Renault champion

    Discretionary:

    - Have 300km of F1 testing experience at a consistent, competitive speed and have a sufficiently good CV to impress the F1 Commission (generally for cases like Lopez's where the most recent competitive activity was not in a series that qualifies, or for someone who attempted the right series but ran out of money despite demonstrating outstanding skill)

    - Have 300km of F1 testing experience at a consistent, competitive speed and have a sufficiently good CV to impress the WMSC and the Safety Commission (new for this year, apparently in case the intent of the process was met without the ability to attain a licence being acquired).

Is this how Schumi got his Superlicense back?

I should imagine his 7 world championships may have helped, the F1 commission can give a licence to anyone really without all the rules needing to be followed (kinda) so he could have got one anyway, but the short answer.

    Yes

  • Alianora La Canta02/03/2010 at 15:19

He did enough F1 mileage to get the first of the discretionary processes I've described to activate. Presumably he'd fast-tracked the process somehow because normally you can't apply for a Superlicence until that's done. He didn't automatically qualify, but he has done a lot of GP2-level racing and was 4th in GP2 in 2008 (thus just missing out on automatic Superlicence qualification).

I believe that's the most likely case, though given that he'd tested the Ferrari for a few days in 2007 and 2008, he may have also been eligible automatically under the "regular test driver" clause. Given Michael's stature in F1, I doubt the FIA would have been especially stringent on the definition of "regular".

We've had switchover. The quality of your digital signal should improve afterwards.

Without Worldwide would we be able to buy BBC series to own, and would as many series have been sold abroad? I do think it helps bring in money, whether it reduces the licence fee as they claim is another matter...

whereas i dislike the bbc, because the business model gives it an unfair advantage, regardless of the content it produces.

    Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

A few years ago, when more companies had more money to spend on advertising the Beeb was struggling to complete with commercial channels.

However here we are in the middle of the biggest financial meltdown for ages, and the BBC model is proving more recession proof.

While I do not like everything the BBC does – I am happy to pay the license fee. I hate adds in the middle of programs, and iplayer has been a life changer, as I am rarely able to be at home on Sunday afternoons anymore.

We've had switchover. The quality of your digital signal should improve afterwards.

Ours is tomorrow. I really hope it does, since our double glazed windows the freeview signal in my room has been non existant despite being perfect before. Very annoying :(

  • Pat W02/03/2010 at 18:47

We've had switchover. The quality of your digital signal should improve afterwards.

    But I think Alia is on analogue. {Comment #656}

I have Freeview as well, but the signal is so bad that it only works about 1 day in 10. And it's been getting progressively less reliable as switchover approaches - back in 2005 it worked all the time except in lousy weather...

Switchover for my house, incidentally, is next year.

Are you on the edge of two regions? It may be worth trying another transmitter.

  • Pat W02/03/2010 at 18:49

When I first saw the sign, I was like, "Nah, it can't be THAT Muse, can it!?" (my mind was on my test, not on bands, that's for sure)

The absolute worst is when the circus comes to town. They take up 4 rows of parking for 2 weeks. Luckily at that time it's warm out so walking isn't so bad.

    Nice =)

This month is clean for me too, but next month I'll be at the track while two races are going on, so I'll have to catch replays.

Ah I only caught 2 races live last year so it'll make a welcome change :)

Bahrain GP weekend, I'm dog-sitting. Everybody else in the house is going down to London for do's. The F1 engines can sing as loud as they please! I'm so looking forward to the Cosworth at full volume! :D

Why not, the home team got close to scoring, if its Arsenal, a rare moment, so of course they have to applaud.

  • Lady Snowcat02/03/2010 at 22:15

    A quick change of topic...

On the lead page of the Beebs F1 coverage we have 5 photos of Lewis...

Apart from 2 of Alonso no-one else has more than 1...

(And I was looking for 1 who wasn't there... but that won't surprise you...)

5 photos is big overkill.... I would expect say 2 given his leaving dad story.. or even 3 but 5 is totally weird....

Don't tell me it's because Macca are British... there is 1 of Jense and none of the Williams guys...

Although of the German drivers only one is there... and guess who that is!!...

  • Lukeh02/03/2010 at 22:21

Taking a couple of days from the blog and no pressing need to write the obvious about USF1 - t'is been covered enough by people who know more about it than me (besides I got my kicks in a few weeks back...)

Hopefully will get my AVUS article up before the start of the season - got writing to go up on the other site in the mean time...
