It is young Sebastian Vettel's birthday today, so I suppose he is one year less young now. I wonder if he will ever not be "young" Seb? Anyway, the first person to mention Little Britain gets a lifetime ban from Sidepodcast (this sentence not included, obviously). Here are some of the community things happening:
- Scott's Puma fan report finally went up on their site, and it's a really great read with some fabulous photos. There was also a really good video, although that seems to have gone MIA (grrr, Bernie). If you did manage to catch the video, please join me in the call for Scott to replace EJ on the BBC.
- Gavin's been away on a trip to Norway, and took some ace photos. I do like some good holiday snaps. Also, get used to the sharing of photos, as I'm expecting to link to plenty more from those going to Goodwood. Take lots of pictures on our behalf and we'll share them with the crowd.
- Finally, this isn't directly community related, but I wanted to give a quick plug to the DarkUFO LOST Episode Cup. The competitions on this site were our inspiration to run the character and circuit cups on SPC, so props to them. Also, if you like LOST, go vote!
That's all for now. As it is Friday, let us know what your plans are for the weekend. We're not going to Goodwood, so we'll probably be around (as if we wouldn't have been anyway!). I will see you in the comments.
croftie mentioned the other week that vettel was something of lit... nah, i just can't :)
he is getting on a bit though isn't he? (vettel, not croftie).
Don't do it!!
Aww shucks... :P
Thanks for the photo plug - we had an awesome time and I would definitely reccomend a trip to Oslo!
Hello Fellow SPCers
hullo joe. all well with you?
Yupper, getting paid to talk to my friends
the best way :)
So true. So I hear Goodwood is this weekend. Are you and Mrs. going. I remember the pictures of her drenched.
haha. should be okay weather this weekend, but we've opted to sit it out to work on more spc stuff.
it's the first proper break we've had all year and we're making the most of this one and the next one to work on... stuff.
The train for sure had minardi dna... Car leg now much better!
Good night all - need sleep as I'm heading over to the Roskilde Festival tomorrow (to see Oasis :D )
Enjoy the break, you more than deserve it
night gavin.
hehe.
it's an adventure.
it's an adventure.
it's an adventure.
keep reminding yourself :)
what's your eta?
ahh, we love it really. what's the weekend hold in store for you?
Eta 45 mins everyone there apparently asleep... Should be fun to wake them up muhahahaha!
what's your start time in the morning?
Celebrating the 4th, when guys got rid of the colonies. BBQ and nothing says safety like beer and fireworks
Sorry, I was trying to be smart and say when you guys (Brittain) got rid of the colonies.
haha, of course! and a hangover on sunday, presumably.
Hopefully not, I have to work on Sun. and run prior to work, so too much beer not so good. But if my usual self-discipline shows, yes, I'll be terribly hung over
see, i thought it was a film about aliens...
;)
Or ants maybe. I guess you guys don't celebrate the 4th...or do you
hehe!
sadly not, no. i may join you in a virtual beer though.
I will set up a chilled pint glass for you. Cheers
Morning all. Anything happen since I went to bed?
Hello. Anything happening...I don't think so
The only news of the entire day is that Bulgaria wants a GP although no doubt this is yet another one from Bernie's imagination.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76651
If the Somali Pirates have a really good year, he'll want to have a race Mogadishu
Africa has to be on his list.
that has to be in the running for quote of the year ;-)
Hello Sidepodland from the middle of nowhere... I have Wifi!
9am i believe!
*scoff*
It is http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Best+Comment+of+the+Year
You made it. Have fun
hehe. Cool
yay. Take lots of photos
goodwood weather... currently raining... mud?
Its a little dark! ;)
oh dear. I hope you didn't drive your Ferrari Daytona!
way-hey!! you made it :)
My what?!
;-)
Almost... the trains were terrible!
Almost didnt!
job done though. how have you found the only place in the country with rain?
Went somewhere with summer event on?
There isnt much.. lots of lightning though
the place is pretty good in the rain. the lay down temporary asphalt paths.
Whilst it is raining!?
right guess i should sleep, rest the camera arm before tomorow!
heheh. they're down already.
night buddy.
my plans for the weekend: friday night TENNIS. Saturday daytime SLEEP Saturday night TENNIS. Sunday much the same as Saturday.
So its pizza all weekend then?
no pizza. Perhaps a roast.
Sounds good. I guess there are not so many matches to play so you have time for that
plus i already have one in the freezer. Handy.
That is useful.
Why can I never beat Federer at stick tennis? He can't be that good
i dont know, i can beat him at virtua tennis
also, go to bed
Well you be Andy Murray and try to beat him
I am going very soon
ahh my weekend has started early. Nice.
Morning, everyone.
The latest ex-F1 ace with a Twitter account: http://twitter.com/jpmontoya
Glad to see some things don't change:
Friday, that is always good news
I am not sure I am interested in JPM's rack of ribs :-)
baby back, baby back, baby back... ;)
Kiwi idea of flight safety demonstration :-)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-Mq9HAE62Y
Shhhh... :P
Remind me to bring earplugs when I'm flying domestically next time. I hate this whole stupid campaign, its easy to ignore on TV but I don't want it in my planes too :D
Just read Scott's article at Puma Motorsport. Very nice! :D
Thanks Journeyer :) Morning all :)
Hi Scott, looks like you and Alonso are about the same height :-)
At least we've got one thing in common. ;)
you can also handle Renault steering weel, so make it two :-)
Donnelly gets in deeper doo-doo:
http://www.buzzle.com/articles/282581.html
make it stop make it stopppppppp
Sorry Amy.
not your fault :D
Morning alll... excitement is building... about to head out!
I'm about to head out too. Need milk and bread. ;)
Not quite as exciting as Goodwood :)
I just got up and had no idea of the date until I got on Sidepodcast and saw the daily thread :D
Hahaha! I love that. :)
The Daily Thread: It tells you what day it is today! :D
although twice recently it's been wrong ;)
It really does, I wouldn't know otherwise :D
You know this site WAY too well, Amy. :D
Oops.
I wouldn't notice, I haven't known the date for a while.
Oh, and hi again everyone.
who wants to cook me dinner? I'm so sick of cooking dinner.
I love not having to cook.
I normally enjoy it but sometimes I just get stuck for ideas, even with a pantry full of ingredients
I enjoy the thought of cooking. Masterchef iss on downstairs and I always think, "it would be awesome to learn to cook and do all these fancy recipes and stuff."
I'm not going to try it though, cos my failure and giving up would ruin the 'dream'. ;)
eheheh I definitely don't tackle the sort of things they do. I'm a meat-and-3-veg cook :D
I could manage that, but I'd probably leave out the 3 veg if it was me cooking. Maybe 1 veg...
Anyone going to World Series Renault over the weekend at Silverstone, or are most folk off to Goodwood?
So the big news of the day is that...
The Giggle Live Commenting Roadshow will be restarting today!
I am taking my liver into my own hands and going out with Bassano this evening... To a cocktail bar.
well it may not turn out to be the biggest news of the day ;)
Wiki says there are people going to Silverstone. Not sure who's on that list, though. The link should be in the latest Debrief post.
what could be bigger than that?
I wish there was something on here...
Friday evening is upon us, quite interested to see how the bars will look on first Friday night after the smoking ban came to place
Australian GP in March? Bathurst? :D
don't mess with Melbourne ! :-)
One city in Metro Manila tried a smoking ban before - it failed miserably: the bars decided to set up smoking lounges instead.
Morning. :D
Aircon repair guy worked his magic and the flat is now at 16°C throughout to get it all settled. :D
Exactly, March... And if FOTA do make a breakaway series, what is Melbourne left with?
As for Bathurst, its meh.
the partial ban worked quite well here for past 2 years, full ban is now on
one thing I noticed when the smoking ban came in in New Zealand was that bars smelt worse. A lot worse. Like sweaty, gross bar-dwellers.
Indoor smoking ban is it? We got that a few years back, it's great.
yes. Have been waiting for long. No more stinky clothes on Sunday mornings I hope :-)
I haven't noticed that here. Either its just a NZ thing or I am one of them... ;) Both are likely I think. ;)
this week they banned smoking in cars if there are kids in the car. That should be interesting to police
I don't notice it anymore, oddly. Maybe I'm used to it now. Ew.
Unless you go to a club - the smoke covered up so much...
about as difficult as policing talking on mobile while driving
yep. Doesn't seem to have stopped people
Yeah, they banned talking on a hands-free phone for provisional drivers here, how on earth do you police people talking when you can't even see the phone?
maybe they'll pull over anyone whose mouth is moving :D I'd be in trouble, I'm quite the car-singer ;)
you just pull up every P plater, they must be doing something wrong
when I moved here and found out how your licensing system works I was super glad I got my license in New Zealand :D I had my full license at 16 :D
but how about Nelson Piquet playing with mobile and tweeiting during the drivers parade ? :-)
Probably. ;)
I hate you you so much...
Thats the thing. I I always sing in the car, but theoretically a cop could pull me over. That said, they couldn't book me for anything when they saw no handsfree set. Well, supposedly, although they'd probably try.
I wonder how they'd cope with cars with built in bluetooth. No handsfree sets to be seen
When I sat my learners test on my 15th birthday the woman was shocked at "how keen" I was. I would've thought it was common to want to drive as soon as you can.
Really? I didn't feel the same way, for some reason...
I reckon that the mojority of people that sit on their birthdays are blokes? I think that would be the case, and perhaps that's why she was shocked?
Heh, whoops.
sometime in the last 24 hour @andyroddick has stopped following @andy_murray. IT'S ON LIKE DONKEY KONG.
HA-HA! :D
Murray and Haas for the final. ;)
these are the guys who throw the small round thing at each other ?
Federer and Roddick all the way! :D
have I ever told you how wise you are?
cupcake?
oh.my.god.
wewantvideowewantvideo
its nothing if its not postman pat
:)
I am going to have to send you a couple of cookery books.
1) Cooking for Blokes
2) Foreign Cooking for Blokes
3) Flash Cooking for Blokes
They are properly good cookbooks for the errr... uninitiated. ;)
i have no reason to, when i live with the best cook in the world...
nice flattery attempt there....
....but what if she goes on another boat?
rats.
Just think, next valentines day you could cook her something nice, rather than taking her to get your hair cut...
Or your anniversary... instead of getting plastered in London... ;)
you're not helping!!
plus, i have milky bar.
I'm meant to be? 8O
Although you could really blame the getting plastered in London on someone else. ;)
we need a sidepodconstitution :)
i do. good luck giggles!
yay the centre court stream is already up. Time to watch nothing for 30 minutes :D
Is that healthy for you broadband speed?
You follow F1, you should be used to that.
'
hmm good point. I'm onto the 3g dongle too because I'm pretty sure my normal connection has been throttled into super-slow land.
zing!
I spotted some Milky Bar ice cream in a tub in the shop. Figured that would be good as a hot weather present.
that sounds amazing. I once tried some Cadbury white chocolate icecream and I wanted to marry it. Then I never saw it in a shop ever again :(
it's still hot outside so I've just got a bowl of Haagen Dazs vanilla to enjoy. :D
And now to watch the Italian Job.
old or new?
The only proper Italian Job.
The old one.
thank god
I just can't stand Marky Mark - he's only done 1 good film and that was Shooter.
oh heeeeey tommy haas.
and rogerrrrr *faints*
King Rog has never lost a Wimbledon semi-final? Jeez louise.
Greetings from Porto...
why, no, Amy. I'll take that as a compliment. :)
and he doesn't look a day over 21
Isn't that an amazing statistic? :D
Agreed. I enjoyed Shooter.
Although Three Kings was good too.
they don't mention the 4 times he didn't get to the semis though, although that was maaaaaaaaaaany a year ago now.
Indeed.
He was rubbish in the last M. Night Shymalangalangalinglong film as well.
The Departed was OK.
If Christine is about; just like to say love the new safety series :-*
The only film, I can think of at the moment, that I prefer the remake to the original is The Thomas Crown Affair, and that's saying something 'cos I really like the original.
Yeah, forgot about that. He's pretty much the only character to survive the whole film as well.
Difficult. Evil Dead 2 for me. It claims to be a sequel, but it's just a remake of Evil Dead.
porto? someone's working you too hard.
Much agreed. :D
On that tip, there was an interesting feature about the Highlander movies in Empire a month or so back.
Same paymaster as the Super Trofeo last weekend, but at least I don't have to prance around in teamwear (looking for all the world like Alan Partidge at the funeral in his Castrol GTX jacket) this time. Am editing the WTCC yearbook, y'see.
thefifthdriver tweeting at andy murray? favourite sports colliding? Not quite as cool as Nole at Monaco though.
Only good one is the first one.
Never read Empire though. Generally try to have a quick flick through in Sainsburys or WH Smiths though. ;)
:)
how did miss out on a pic of that?
ahh nice one. i know nothing about wtcc, but is it free practice today?
Ok! Who killed it?
oh its Lewis tweeting? Even worse.
ok magazine is dead?
Couldn't submit any comments, refreshed - couldn't load any comments.
All deadddedded
spc? tis all good for me.
It's alright now - wasn't for a couple of minutes for me. :(
Everything else worked.
um, language?
fixed. carry on.
I can still it. Will it be there until I refresh? If so, I'm not refreshing until I can make sense of it...
Wait, I obviously hadn't read the daily post.... I get it now.
you didn't read the daily? naughty.
Firefox opened up to the doohickey automatically when I got home this afternoon. I always forget that just because its the same day for me, it doesn't mean its not a new day for everyone else. ;)
Damn you Roger.
damnit, that's almost a brilliant excuse ;)
OH THANK GOD
Just remember
"All time is an illusion; Lunchtime especially so"
Slarty-Bartfast
I was amazed when I was in the supermarket on Tuesday morning to see how many cash-in Jacko souvenir mags there were on the shelves. They must have started working on 'em before he was cold in his grave.
According to the director of 1 and 2, when they ran out of money part way through filming the second one the finance company closed everything down, told him to sling his hook, cut together what extant footage there was and released it.
Starts in about 10 mins. Will be deafening – press room is basically a marquee by the front straight.
old skool! they have wifi though?
I've been to the castle in the first one many times... Love that movie!
Sort of - it comes and goes more than the Karma Chameleon...
A lot of it would have been pre-prepared.
WTCC has as much politics, bickering, technical arguments and scandal as F1. I get the impression the series is this close to exploding!
-1,000,000,000,000,000,000 for OK Magazine using that picture of Jacko in the ambulance. How tasteless!
heheheh!
Thank you :)
My favourite comment of the day so far.
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Best+Comment+of+the+Year
Yay!
Let's hope the cheque clears first!
'Twas a shocking piece of hackery and no mistake. And it's the sort of thing that supermarkets usually stock by the tills so you have little chance of avoiding it.
I was just watching the womens wheelchair tennis. One of them is a dead-ringer for Mrs Heikki.
Court 4 - Boys Singles - 3rd and final set is at 12-13 right now!
I love the no-tie-break rule on final sets so much :D
And I just realised this match has been on TV for an hour and my EPG was wrong :(
FINALLY.
Boooo. Bad Roger.
14-15 now! Speechless, I am.
And Fed 2-0 up. Yay!
Heh. You and Amy should watch from the same pub. That would be fun. :P
I hope both of your predictions don't work :P
She can come up here, I'm not going to Melbourne. ;)
at least we have a pub that shows F1 here :P
I can't live comment from a pub. ;)
Also, there is only reason that would make me want to go to Melbourne, and its not the Australian Open. ;)
pub has wifi ;)
Melbourne Cup? :P
Yeah, but I can't live comment from any pub, wifi or no.
I'd lend you my laptop :P Or my PSP :P
I have a laptop, its just not portable. ;) I get lost trying to count the number of wires on my desk.
I always said I'd buy a desktop when I finished uni, but I'm far too addicted to taking my laptop everywhere I possibly can. I once had it in the bath.
what??
getting clean, playing the sims at the same time, what's not to love?
Oh my god!
utter madness. how did it not get wet?
no, no, no, no... no!
we had one of those clip on thingys that slot over the sides of the bath to give you a sort of table-like surface. I was super paranoid though.
No, no, no, no, no, no...yes?
I'm with him on this one.
Crispy fried Christine... Not good.
Hey guys. On the train to the Roskilde Festival to see Oasis. It's going to be a got one!
i could sort of understand a waterproof case for an iphone/psp or similar. a whole laptop near that much water is, crazy.
hear that christine... crazy.
Amy, the thought of you using your laptop in the bath and possibly live commenting on sidepodcast is wrong on so many levels!
Did I say I wanted to do it?
ahh this was in my pre sidepodcast days :D
it does amuse me that the laptop survived yet I once had an epic magazine-reading fail when I forgot I was in a bath and tried to put it on my lap.
You were thinking it. ;)
agreed. although the obit could be hilarious.
christine died doing what she was addicted to, and the last words she typed were:
franckkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
you said: "Oh my god!"
assumed you just had some kind of epiphany?
Wimbledon blog:
"Murray fans on the hill are few and far between. I literally can't find anyone who loves him. They're still avid Henmaniacs"
Brits are smarter than I give them credit for ;) ;)
Thing is, I do not bath, I shower, and that would just not be practical.
waterproof iphone it is then.
Wach the vid for 'White & Nerdy', he manages it in that. ;)
Vamos Roger!
Oh well, Murray will beat him in the final. ;)
Anyway, I'm off, I have to commit a sidepodcrime and get up at 7am on a Saturday morning. Later.
a ha ha ha ha ha.
"Is the All England Club tempting fate... British national anthem has twice been tested on Centre Court speakers this morning..."
it seems no one does Lewis Hamilton syndrome like they do
resist. you must resist. night sean.
ouch. night!
Today I have had a sandwich that included some lettuce I grew myself. This is very exciting.
I bought a punnet of strawberries today and all I could think of was how jealous I am of your garden.
Aww, if it helps, I had to buy a punnet of strawberries too because my plants are not supplying enough!
I am tempted to find a garden centre and see if they sell those cute little indoor garden bag thingys like you have, but I know any gardening attempt I make would fail without parental help, and my parentals are 1400 miles away
But this is no problem. You can ask me, and I can ask my parents :)
from looking out my window I can see my flatmate appears to be growing something in her courtyard, I wonder if she knows about gardening.
I can't grow anything. I follow the instructions about watering and sunlight to the letter, and the ungrateful little things still curl up and die on me.
It is probably too cold for them!
:)
outside?
oh.
I thought my garden needed one of these but then I saw prices start at $595
Ah, I see, well, I don't blame them. Outside = bad.
ooh. Have found a garden centre nearby and their website says "We specialise in plants for courtyards and terrace gardens."
Perhaps a visit tomorrow.
Did my last comment work? Red arrows commontator mocking new zealand!
gasp! need more info!
:D
also, how cool is this photo.
He can FLY
http://i42.tinypic.com/9t3cc5.jpg
Hope its raining at Goodwood, but then again, that is me being bitter again. ;)
Hey everybody
There are 2 kiwi pilots. Apparently new zealand food is terrible... I sat in an audi r10!
I don't think New Zealand has food. All our 'traditional' meals are British :D
Is it just me, or is the commentary seemingly explaining all the basics of tennis play?
my commentary is still saying how Roddick is a terrible terrible man for beating Lleyton :(
Are they supporting Murray now?
Whats the problem with Andy Murray?
they don't seem to be biased either way for once which is nice
to be honest he has toned it down a bit recently but he was far too whiny and sulky on court for me. His attitude used to be terrible and still rears its head from time to time, plus first impressions tend to stick for me.
woo Roddick!
Roddick takes Set 1!
ouch, Murrays stats for that set were terrible
Clearly a fluke.
Wow...so quiet...
...what do you think of kimi?
;)
At Ferrari? Finnished. ;)
Don't get why everyone says hes going to rally. If his future involves driving, surely it'll be one of these
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/diapo-054-jpg
1 set to each Andy.
Funny - one guy screams 'Roddick!', everyone else decides to drown him out with 'Murray!'
There seems to be more support for Roddick than I thought there would be, which makes me :D
Judy Murray is fierce. She has some super-strong genes too.
hey Muzz, stop it with the attitude
What did he do? Makes sense that he's annoyed at himself, doesn't it?
You know how sometimes when you already dislike someone you're not willing to give them any room to move? :D
It's more the 'come ons' and the fist pumps on every point that get me.
Okay, never mind, I agree.
heheh its like he just really wanted to back up my view by having a wee umpire argument ;)
Will a Federer v Roddick match be any good?
My brother-in-law used to do that in his garden, and smoke the product...
Lots of people struggle to like the surly chappy on the opposite side of the court, don't they?
Well, the fellow has just come round to say that they're cutting the wifi power imminently, so I may just disappear.
Massive goonery today. I was at the unveiling of the new Lada WTCC car and some fellow came bounding up to me, practically panting, asking to borrow my pen. He then kept me pen-less for a good 15 minutes while he, er, waited to get Jaap van Laagen and James Thompson to autograph his press pack. Still, at least he gave the pen back.
nope. not in the slightest.
Rats. I do not want to cheer for Murray, but I am only ever in favour of good tennis.
Is it churlish of me to have cultivated a mild dislike for both competitive parents and precocious children?
out of everyone on the tour, Federer seems to have Roddick mentally beaten the most. Roddick is a big believer that Federer is the best ever and doesn't seem to think he can beat him. Head to Head stats are 18-2 in Rogers favour. They do seem to have a lot of tie breaks though, which is nice.
Not for you, I would imagine :)
I worry about the threat of stress induced labour for Mrs Federer, I really do.
Seriously
I always get really uncomfortable when the players have to walk past each other to get to their seat.
They should make a rule that whoever is on the wrong side should go behind the umpire or something.
She's massive!
they are refusing to announce their due date but seriously, it can't be far away.
Is that all the tie break is? First to seven, you have to be two points clear. That makes so much sense! No one has ever explained that to me before.
I feel stupid.
aw. I only worked that out during the Australian Open this year.
Once you realise sets are first to 6 two points clear and tiebreaks are first to 7 two points clear, you can't go wrong.
set points are making my heart beat faster than it should considering I'm lying in bed not moving.
Agreed. Roddick takes Set 3.
Roddick in four. Should've put money on it.
Either Roddick in four or Murray in five.
Or ants maybe. I guess you guys don’t celebrate the 4th…or do you {Comment #24}
No. Britain did not exactly cover itself in glory in the American War of Independence...
The only news of the entire day is that Bulgaria wants a GP although no doubt this is yet another one from Bernie’s imagination. {Comment #30}
My guess is that it's real... ...and the Bulgarians are yet to ask the size of the bill. When they do, it will swiftly become non-real.
I just realised how sad I am that Wimbledon is nearly over, considering I have banned myself from the ATP Tour. And best of 3 isn't the same anyway.
Except in the fifth set in Grand Slams, in which case there is not tie-break.
Donnelly gets in deeper doo-doo: {Comment #75}
No wonder Max hasn't openly suggested Alan gets elected President. He'd have been laughed out of office...
unless its the US Open, my least favourite of all Slams.
I’m a meat-and-3-veg cook {Comment #92}
Unfortunately I'm a no-meat-and-1-veg-on-a-good-day cook (usually my limit is bread and grated cheese and on a bad day grating cheese is beyond me).
With the exceptions for the exceptions it almost looks like the calendar: lap year is multiple of 4, but not multiple of 100, but yes if it's multiple of 400...
Anyone going to World Series Renault over the weekend at Silverstone, or are most folk off to Goodwood? {Comment #94
Neither for me. I'm still broke after Silverstone, and saving up for revalidating my First Aid at Work certificate...
Exactly, March… And if FOTA do make a breakaway series, what is Melbourne left with? {Comment #105}
Maybe a FOTA street race - and you just know that the FIA will try to run its own top-level single-seater series even in that case (which means Melbourne would run as its Australian race).
Yeah, they banned talking on a hands-free phone for provisional drivers here, how on earth do you police people talking when you can’t even see the phone? {Comment #116}
Check for phone signal? Though to be truly effective, the rule would have to be that all mobiles are switched off when a car is running, which could cause difficulties...
but how about Nelson Piquet playing with mobile and tweeiting during the drivers parade ? {Comment #120}
That's OK - he wasn't driving...
I didn’t feel the same way, for some reason… {Comment #125}
Neither did I, but then the requirements were too complicated for me to really consider becoming a learner at that point - or even now. I'd need to be 25 and in a steady job to even think about it...
They are properly good cookbooks for the errr… uninitiated {Comment #138}
Do you have a "How To Boil An Egg Who Got Confused At Step 1 of The Instructions for Delia Smith's How To Cook" in there? If so, please can I borrow it?
Am editing the WTCC yearbook, y’see. {Comment #178}
Sounds good. Hope you enjoy it a lot :)
WTCC has as much politics, bickering, technical arguments and scandal as F1. I get the impression the series is this close to exploding! {Comment #203}
As long as it's not actually exploding the way A1GP and Speedcar are (still don't understand how they contrived to go under on the same day)...
This match has me giggling uncontrollably. Have possibly lost my mind.
Hehehe, blame the sleep deprivation, always.
well, it is 3.25am....
Is Murray Scottish again yet?
Almost
I see. Just got the live BBC feed up and running, they switched the match to BBC One and the News to BBC Two. I can never understand why they do that.
Right - tiebreak time - again.
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
It's okay, don't worry, I know how they work now :)
ratings?
That was WAY too close. Match points for Roddick.
So, RG, what was that about Murray beating Fed in the final for sure?
:D
wow, someone ate all the pies and the then had more pies for afters.
and then some more pies.
SECOND GREATEST DAY OF 2009!
Heh. Fantastic game, but... Roddick was just way too good today.
mmmm baby pie
After the RG final?
No. Men are not allowed to say things like that. Girls are.
And then a wafer thin mint...
if ever there was a time to peak :D :D
Somewhere in a London hotel room, Roger Federer must be smiling.
nothing will top career slam day. I cried. And then I cried when I watched the next 10 or so repeats.
Yay for Roddick, Boo for a rubbish final though!
*leaves to go pick up £10 from neighbour*
Ha ha!
oh.
can i second what you said earlier?
Maybe, but surely those people who want to watch the tennis will put BBC Two on first and then have to change to BBC One. Can you put Christine on to it?
Well done! :D
Nope. You have to say she looks blooming or glowing or something.
I could be wrong, Roddicks last two matches were the best he has played for YEARS.
Dude...where's our car?
I watch the iPlayer?
and those people will happily do that.
the ones they're "collecting", are the ones who automatically go for bbc one first.
hehehhehe.
He'll play Roger hard, but Roger will win it.
No, I meant can you use your influence at the BBC to make them stop. I'm using iPlayer too and the site had not been updated to reflect the change in the programming.
Mmm. I could, but I have no idea about channels and stuff. I was tuned in to centre court since 1pm and that's all I needed :)
she just looks mas... eno... mam...
big.
I would say she looks like she is cooking the Saviour of Tennis to perfection
or bibendum.
oooooooooooh harsh
I bet a large number of people will be reselling their finals tickets now
Grrrrrr 5Live. Heard the tiebreak on there. At 6-5
'And Roddick plays it into the net'
Thought it was back to 6-6 and everything, back in it. And then the idiot says
'And Roddick drops to his knees and celebrates reaching his third final'
I'd hang on to them - it might be the day where Roger Federer entered the history books.
I'd never pass up a chance to see Fed but a lot of people are Murray-or-bust sadly :(
You're lucky LPG hasn't seen this...
hehe. shhhhh.
hooray only 99 days until Australian Open tickets are on sale :D
Lewis Hamilton syndrome strikes again. Maybe the sounds guy did jinx it by playing the British National Anthem...
My tennis forum says "Oh god bbc sad montage - this is ridiculous, its just a tennis match, not our last chance for national pride."
I can't see BBC coverage so can't comment on it, but I can imagine what it looks like if their tennis coverage is like the F1 coverage.
I can’t grow anything. I follow the instructions about watering and sunlight to the letter, and the ungrateful little things still curl up and die on me. {Comment #260}
Same here. I've found a good trick is getting stuff that stands droughts like cacti, put them in the windowsill and then ignore them until they start looking a bit wilted. Then give them a glass or two of water and a week later they're fine...
The tennis forum guy isn't an F1 fan, is he? Especially back in the ITV days...
I don't think any of them are, they're mostly Americans and when I commented that Lewis had tweeted Andy none of them knew who Lewis was :D
From Twitter:
Lewis tweeted Andy? Maybe Lewis jinxed him? ;)
is button on for a spotty now then?
I've not had a tweet from Lewis. Or do you mean that Scottish tennis player again?
Andy, Its Lewis Hamilton here. I just wanted to wish you all the best for today's match against Andy Roddick.... I know the pressure is on but let it be fuel for you and give you strength for this game. ..You know you can do it i know you can do it and so does your country. Most of all, do it for yourself man. All the best Peace
LEWIS, YOU KNOW NOTHING. :D
Provided he doesn't choke, yup.
Nah, he'll come a valiant second to some Ice Hockey player probably.
how did he get that in 140chars?
its 3 separate messages, they were broken up by the ....'s
So, 3 Americans in the 2 Wimbledon finals, on 4th of July weekend. The Williams sisters were expected, but Roddick certainly wasn't.
LEWIS, YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND TWITTER. :)
don't cry Britain, theres still Jamie Murray!
I bet it wasn't even him, there was no twitpic proof this time :D
Jamie who now? :)
Eh? Andy's young, he'll just get better. He'll have another shot at it.
sounded more like ron...
I mean this tournament though :D
Oh. ;)
oh, file fail. One of my recordings is 5gb and I can't export anything larger than 4gb. NOW HOW AM I MEANT TO MAKE HUMOUROUS ANIMATIONS.
Anyway, I'm off to bed. Wimbledon finals will both be great. Night, everyone!
night j.
Night sir.
Night!
how have I not seen this before
http://www.andymurrayometer.com/
gagh... just got homeish. feet dead, we left early to miss the traffic and lost the car so we go traffic! 2hrs and 1 Murray defeat later....
It was frigging amazing... i took wayy to many photos, camera ran out of battery at lunchtime... saw so much, literally walked into Timo.. was so shocked i didn't get an autograph!
LMP1's are tiny!
Nascars sound great!
Did you get a photo of him?
I was reading a book called "The Meaning of Sport" today. It seems quite peculiar to have a book suddenly break off discussing the sociology of competitive endeavour to spend three pages discussing how F1 cars are adapted to make them go faster...
RG's bad day gets even worse
Earlier on, but not when i collided with him
Everything after school, seems to have gone 'orribly wrong.
Is this photo, of him, or in the car?
hehe, must be a good day for you though!
:D :D :D
Cant quite remember, i think him, DC and Mick Doohan were having a chat
I'll let you off, assuming it is of his face.
hey all! Cambridge was awesome! i'm sad i missed the murray match though. i hear goodwood was great fun today :)
He was very friendly..
especially considering some bloke chasing a mclaren around the paddock ran into him!
Eeee, I think it was clearly McLaren's fault ;)
The Doctor is watching The Other Murray.
bbq time cyas later...
did i mention i sat in an R10? ;)
Evening all. So glad to be home, LONG, very tough day at work. TFI Friday is all I can say. Roll on Sunday too. :)
Hey Scott.
*twiddles thumbs and looks around* So......
Want something to talk about?
Actually come to think of it, I was going over something in my head today at work.
I think Jenson prefers hot conditions to Rubens in races. Jenson's got a smoother driving style than Rubens so he'll use his tyres less but probably takes longer to get heat into them. In colder conditions, like at Silverstone, Rubens seemed to cope better as he was probably able to get his tyres up to temperature quicker than Jenson which could have been why he had a podium. But then when it gets hot, Rubens overcooks his tyres and with the higher temperatures, this aids Jenson to get heat into his and still drive smoothly at the same time.
double murray fail! poor jamie.
Think about it - all the races Jenson's won (with the exception of Malaysia) have been in sunny, hot conditions. All non-Jenson/Brawn wins have come in colder conditions. And of course I do remember Silverstone Radio mentioning Brawn struggle in cold conditions.
So then the question is, if it is cold enough to suit Barrichello, is it too cold for a Brawn win?
Boo.
Evening all.
Glad Lou enjoyed Cambridge and jealous of Nick for getting into an R10. Sums up the day so far.
Scott,
I think to an extent you are right but it really comes down to the stupid tyre rules. If both drivers had a free choice of tyres I don't think you would see as much difference
i say no.
what if there was just one tyre for everybody?
no choice, but no farcial racing either.
Interesting. If Rubens can generally have a good weekend and Jenson fall into one or two problems, he should get at least one win this season. Also depends on what Red Bull get up to as well.
A control tyre?
just one tyre, all season. that's it, and the drivers have to deal with it?
Sounds good to me.
It would suit some drivers of some cars. I have said since the start of two compound racing that Bridgestone should bring its full range of tyres to each race and let the drivers run what they like. If Rubens can get equal performance to Jenson with a slightly harder tyre let him have it. If Lewis's style demands a hard tyre let him have it. If there is something about the Red Bull that needs two soft tyres, a super soft and a medium let them have it.
Let everyone set their cars up to get their best performance all the time and the gaps will be reduced and we get rid of utterly unsuitable tyres for ever.
sounds expensive though.
You know why they only bring two dry compounds to race weekends - cost cuts.
so bring just one.
Exactly.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76653
Don't know if this has been covered but Branson is switching to Manor with a shareholding which I assume is what held up the Brawn deal. I am sure giving him a shareholding appealed to Ross at the start of the season but not when he saw what the car was capable of.
Also it looks like Autosport is trying to out Donnelly.
Yup, I saw that come up earlier today in the comments.
It has to be preferable to everyone know that each car is going to be totally useless for 15 laps as they run the bad tyre. The cost of shipping the extra tyres would b the same as shipping fuel rigs.
What happens when they get it wrong. You can't get one tyre that suits all cars and tyres.
you're missing my argument.
i say, one tyre. no 15 lap stint on a bad tyre. just one compound all season.
Also take into account the production costs of all those extra tyres.
make it very hard?
okay, one compound per race then. the right compound.
Motorsport has a podcast now. It's a bit old school BBC. I don't think they are quite ready for this century but they are trying.
http://www.motorsportmagazine.co.uk/
agreed. also, i'd prefer one tyre and keep refuelling.
just like the autosport one then?
I understand the point but you can't have one tyre that suits everyone. Even when there was a tyre war each manufacturer's tyre only really suited one team. Free it up.
There is no extra production cost. The tyres exist and are in storage in England having already been shipped from Japan. Each driver is going to use exactly the same number of tyres. The only difference is the mix.
Hard tyres give you cold graining
It is still not going to suit everyone
I have never listened to the Autosport one. Is it behind the paywall?
seems like a massive waste of money to me. bring just enough tyres to last the weekend and tell the drivers to adapt.
i'm not a fan of pandering to unique styles (back to the kimi argument, i guess). drivers need to learn to work around these issues, not expect a tyre manufacturer to bend over backwards to suit their particular turn in style.
you're not thinking bigger picture here?
why would they make them if they didn't need them?
it's free, but oooh so boring.
That is like telling a left footed football player he can only kick the ball with his right foot. It is all to do with how the brain is wired. It can't be changed. Some drivers are adaptable in the same way that some sportsmen are ambidextrous.
My point is that they already exist. If you are going to only have one compound ever then Bridgestone could save money. They have a monolpoly let them spend some money to earn the benefit of that monopoly.
no it isn't. it's liking telling a football player that the ball will be the same ball all season. made by the same company, be the same shape and the same size.
I have never even seen it advertised. Motorsport have Nigel Roebuck so there is hope but they are only doing 20 minutes on the Monday after each GP
Isn't that what it is, normally?
but they don't need too?
we let them spend money and they request two tyres be used per race!
that was kinda my point ;)
I'm half reading here, carry on please.
It is precisely the same as telling him to use his left foot. Kimi's brain like Lewis's has been wired to detect the front end of the car gripping and the rear stepping out and to deal with the consequences. Alonso's and Massa's have been wired to deal with the front end sliding. Now in their 20s tou want them to re-wire their brains.
Heya All!
To add to the tyres debate - with Bridgestone bringing consecutive compounds to Nurburgring, Hungaroring and Valencia (& Spa too I think) then the difference mightn't be so drastic, and they might stop enforcing the huge gap. Also, I'm not sure only 1 tyre would work, because you can't predict the weather months in advance, but they have to do the tyre allocations way ahead of time; if Silverstone had been one weekend later - in the heat wave - then the tyre effect might have been different.
That is Max's fault.
i disagree. completely :)
bridgestone asked for it. max agreed.
Hi Rachel,
You are right. I would rather let all the drivers have what they need to race. Give Button softer tyres so he can go and race the Red Bulls.
fair enough. but do what they currently do. only with one compound, not two.
You are just stirring now. I am going to tell Christine
Max is a moron
next you'll suggest bridgestone turn up with individual tyres designed for each driver.
Alonso will want one that gives him 6 tenths. ;) Massa will probably want white ones.
Well I agree with Mr C.
But you still have to make and store multiple compounds and ship them half way round the world. So why not send them to the tracks and give us better racing.
I'm not getting involved.
hehe. i put a lot of value in drivers who are adaptable. and have little time for those who are less so.
it's exactly the same as yesterdays discussion. we're not going to agree, but that's fair enough.
i like a driver who can do both le mans and f1. and i think drivers should be just as adaptable in all situations.
:P
All they need is to supply a range of tyres so that each driver can get the best out of his car. 4 coumpounds should be enough.
nonsense. why 4 and not 5? why 4 and not 3?
He wants to stop Franck having tyres that will let him win
i want franck to le mans and f1.
:D Although the more fundamental issue is surely that first Franck needs a car to put those tyres onto.
He did in 2006
I understand that but you are never going to have 3 or 4 seriously adaptable drivers on the gris at a time and some of them will be at the back. I simply want to create the conditions to give us good racing.
he's adaptable.
i bet he'd make the most of a single compound too.
I would prefer 5 because that is what Goodyear used to bring. You need small steps between them so that everyone can get as close as possiblr to their ideal set up
Top Gear have given us petrolheads some "homework" for Sunday night. I think you can see where this is going ;)
http://transmission.blogs.topgear.com/2009/07/02/your-homework-for-sunday/
What is the point in him having a car then not giving him tyres that suit him? You are just trying to make him look bad
what do feeder series do? i honestly have no idea. but f2, more than one compound?
if the drivers can deal with it early in their careers, they'll grow up adaptable. all of them.
Another guy sponsored by Monster...
Ken Block is just awesome. Or mad. Probably both.
Why not get the teams to look at the conditions, their car and their drivers and choose one compound for each race (for each driver) - then they can only use that tyre (presuming it stays dry). That way only (however many allocations of tyres they have per weekend, is it 7 or is that sat/sun?) one type of dry tyre has to be shipped out and the teams can win/lose on that decision so there is still some strategy involved.
The point I was trying to ma e is that he can look neither good nor bad without the basic tool he needs.
A lot of the junior formulae have one tyre. A lot of drivers look really good in some classes and then have one year in one class where they just can't get on top of it. The difference is that the races are not as long or as fast so the car is more consistent throughout so if they can dial in a set up that lets them drive then it will generally last throughout the race.
There must be more to it than the tyre compound they are using though.
That is better than the current situation
so is having one compund per race. in fact anything is better than the current situation.
question is... what is the best situation?
that looks like fun!!!
Bring back Michelin and Goodyear :)
It is a complicated situation involving the driver's ability and preferences, the car design and variability over a race distance and tyres. All I am saying is if the tyres are made in Japan and shipped to a warehouse in England it seems stupid not to ship them to the track so that each driver can get his ideal set up.
It would also give Bridgestone a lot more publicity than they get now. Imagine if everyone had a freehand we would all be discussing how Jenson has 4 soft tyres but Rubens has 3 softs and a medium on the front left. The whole thing would be a lot more interesting and the racing would be closer.
YES! that would be fab.
Have you seen the bit with the Segway?
What I said in the first place. :)
Tyre wars are fun
No
I'm having a shocker - James Thompson will take to the wheel of the LADA PRIORA at Porto WTCC race for its inaugural outing. I wonder how much money did they pay him for this humiliation? I'll admit to growing up in a family where Lada was the car of choice (because there were no Western brands around in the 1980s) but honestly for a guy like James it's a step backwards. It's like hearing Kurt Cobain singing a Michael Jackson song, not that any of them could do it on Earth right now.
Yes. You'd have to be pretty crazy to agree to do that (but still, think of the noise!)
About 3 minutes into the second video on the TG link.
With Goodyear back, it'll be just like the late 80s - early 90s again :D Now, about them sparks...
Ooo, sparks :)
I gave up on the first video after about 30 seconds. The car looks like it is doing the driving.
We need sparks
If you watch enough you get some in-car shots.
this thing??
http://images.marken.auto-motor-und-sport.de/media/mdb/36336/Lada-Priora.jpg
Let him do it in a car without all the clever diffs etc
This town ain't big enough for both of us?
:)
For the third day of MiNaBloPoMo, I did an entry about the F1 sites I visit by routine. For some reason, Sidepodcast sneaked onto the list ;)
Why. I wouldn't know why that would be the case.
Also it looks like Autosport is trying to out Donnelly. {Comment #444}
So is Pitpass (but then the stupidity of a chief steward hawking for money for one team in particular is so blatant that it was inevitable really).
Side...pod...cast? What is this that you speak of?
Why. I wouldn’t know why that would be the case. {Comment #526}
:D
there are other f1 sites? What on earth for? :P
Side…pod…cast? What is this that you speak of? {Comment #528}
Some bunch of 1s and 0s occupying this approximate location in cyberspace. Semi-legendary capital of Sidepodland, ruled by the benevolent monarchy of Queen Christine and King "me" aka. Mr C. The locals are known for being friendly and rather talkative.
there are other f1 sites? What on earth for? {Comment #530}
Well, until paddock passes start getting handed out in Sidepodland, and until F1 blog royalty decides they want to admin my fora and blog for me, I probably ought to do my own information scanning before conveying my points of view ;) ...
Heeeeeello,
How are we all? Feels like i haven't been here in ages!!
Having fun?
Heya stranger
Apart from having a set of sore knees from getting a ball out of a nettle patch, I am okay.
oioi, how are ya?
yeah, ignore that ;)
i’m not a fan of pandering to unique styles (back to the kimi argument, i guess). drivers need to learn to work around these issues, not expect a tyre manufacturer to bend over backwards to suit their particular turn in style. {Comment #458}
If I wanted to watch "one-size-fits-all" competition, I'd go to my local JobCentre. Sports in general, and F1 in particular, are far more prepared to tailor themselves to the reality that everyone is different. Blocking that attempt with something as important as the tyres seems daft - especially when Bridgestone has already made the tyres en masse and delivered them to its storage facility (it uses the same four compounds per season, so for efficiency reasons does a mass of one compound followed by a mass of the next compound).
Its.too.early.
Morning.
yeah, i can read your mind.
Or at best, your earlier comments
ello ello
or both
Hello.
Your next comment will say
'Well done, you can read my mind'
why would they make them if they didn’t need them? {Comment #459}
In case the compounds they initially used were completely inappropriate at a given track, or else if they had a change of mind at the last minute like they have with the summer quartet of races (it's too late for them to make a new batch for at least some of those races now, since tyres need between 6 and 8 weeks to manufacture).
well done you can read my...waaaiiit a second ;)
Damn, I was oh.so.close.
Actually it only takes 1 week to make the tyres. It then takes 7 weeks for someone to paint the stripes on half of them.
Hullo. On rubbish phone so no idea if this will even post. First day of goodwood was incredible, am now redder than my tshirt though. Met bruno senna and stood behind A screaming toyota f1 car. Plus lots more and hundreds of photos alreadey.. For first time to event though it.is.simply.amazing. Just so gobsnacked by it all. Speak soon!
Awesome!! Glad you're doing great!!
You met up with any others yet?
If you don't have one of Timo...
Actually it only takes 1 week to make the tyres. It then takes 7 weeks for someone to paint the stripes on half of them. {Comment #548}
:D
Sounds likeyou had a great day Lukeh
Met an old friend out of eerie coincedence but no sidepodders yet. :( will meet lou and ollie sunday but no idea about tomorrow.
Apologes i cant quote, i have a few timo pics and a vid. Also some striking pics of senna that i cant explain, will show you guys next week. Just gives me chills looking at them..
Pics and a vid? You are now my new favourite commentor
Bruno i presume? otherwise that would give you chills
Explain chills?
Are they multiplying?
I'm guessing Lukeh's pics make Bruno look a lot like uncle Ayrton.
I assume Bruno looks like some other Senna in the pics
We are on form this evening mister Taylor
Why thank you, Mr Roy (that makes me think of Basil Brush).
I didnt mean to do so but as he drove out from malaren garage, i got a photo of bruno in his uncles car and close up of his helmet next to his name on the car and pic of him sitting away from the camera as well just reminds me of ayrton. Sounds rubbish in words like i said but it just looks fantastic on my camera.. I dunno how else to explain them..
Boom Boom?
Sounds good to me. I look forward to seeing the pics.
Any pics are good pics.
I'm showing my age again. Mr Roy was Basil's straight man back in the 1970s.
And Mr Brush (in his modern guise) says "Boom Boom" alot
He's always said that.
Glad to hear it!
Question Time is being recorded near me in a couple of weeks and i really want to go, but i have to perform at my Primary Schools 40th anniversary shindig. boo
I'd go for the school thing rather than waste my time listening to a bunch of politicians and some celebrity who has never before had any opinion on anything.
His straight man in the remake was called Stephen...
Spooky
I liked him, then they ruined it by replacing him. Then I stopped watching
I don't mind it at the moment, the expenses episodes annoyed me, thats all they talked about. There are more important things going on in the world than an MP's duck house
Am I the only one who remembers whet it was Derek Fowlds who was in Yes Minister?
Bit before my time I think.
I think the Fraud squad should be sent in to go over the last 20 years expense claims and throw a few MPs in jail. It is ridiculous that they can rob us blind and just pay back what they are caught stealing.
trouble is, who would be left?
Lock up every one that is caught and elect new people. Can we do the same with Max?
You'd be surprised, there are more than you'd expect
trouble is, who would be left? {Comment #579}
Dennis Skinner... ...and probably not many others. I'd be surprised if it was more than a third of the House, given the combination of extremely complicated rules, equally dodgy advice given out, the natural greed a lot of people have, the culture of entitlement and the lack of enforcement until the newspaper leaks started.
sidepodspace update - The moon looks like the moon!!
A couple of weeks ago-ish we watched the launch of the LRO/LCROSS mission to the moon. The Lunar Reconaissance Orbiter has now sent its first pictures back and the moon looks a lot like the moon in them. The smallest feature that can be seen is about 3 metres so quite how much use that is when picking landing sites I don't know. Also NASA being NASA have decided to put north at the bottom of the pictures. Is it any wonder they have so many problems?
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/LRO/multimedia/lroimages/lroc_20090702_a.html
Wow!
Who woulda thunked it!
I thought the resolution was better than 3 metres, there was a discussion on Slashdot about finally being able to show the conspiracy theorists they are wrong. Someone replied that the only way to convince them would be to take them to the Moon, preferably without a space suit.
It is too late to convince the conspiracy theorists. They would just claim the LEM bits that are legt were sent later. I just want to know how the cameras they left on the moon tracked the LEMs as they took off.
I also heard something around 0.5m, probably it's just a first low-resolution picture
manually controlled from the ground by timing the previous blast off's and including the time it takes for the signal to reach the moon to control them
NASA show on Discovery. ;)
According to the fact sheet linked from http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/LRO/main/index.html the camera can go down to a resolution of 1 metre
Manually? I thought they just attached a piece of string from the lunar module to the camera
5 seconds before I posted it :)
Are you insane. You are not meant to wash your windows in the bath
