It is Independence Day today, although Mr C and I also recognise it as the day Will Smith helps save us from aliens. Bruce has got the meteorites covered and Will knows what he's doing with those UFOs, what could go wrong? Anyway, here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • What's going on with Alan Donnelly then? The story is that Virgin are moving their sponsorship, which is fair enough. Their relationship with Brawn has been dwindling almost since the first race. So, what does this Donnelly fella have to do with it?
  • Over on the F1 Big Pic, we took the challenge of covering the Valencia story. What were the chances of finding a decent pic of that instantly forgettable race? I am mightily disappointed the green building didn't make the pic, but we should be able to see more of that if there is less seating around.
  • Finally, Alianora has written a great post about her daily process of finding out what's going on in the world of F1, detailing which sites she visits and in which order. Would love to hear other people's routines as well.

That'll do it for now. It's Goodwood Saturday, so we'll still be keeping an ear and eye out for any pics or tweets cropping up. As always, I'll see you in the comments.

    Oh.dear.lord.

    Bernie thinks Max should be Prime Minister.

    [Max] would, Mr Ecclestone says, make an excellent Prime Minister. “I prefer strong leaders. Margaret Thatcher made decisions on the run and got the job done. She was the one who built this country up slowly. We’ve let it go down again.

    “All these guys, Gordon and Tony, are trying to please everybody all the time . . . Max would do a super job, he’s a good leader. I don’t think his background would be a problem.”

    I wish this was just Bernie's weird sense of humour, but I think he's actually being serious.

    Hi Lou,

    nettle sting? (has basically been away all day) i'm pleased it's getting better though.

    Yeah. Some clever person chipped me, the bar and landed the ball into the nettle field thing.

    nope! punting is really really fun! especially when your guide is a very cute guy from Glasgow with the nicest accent ever... *cough* so no i didn't fall off. I saw someone else fall off though.

    He doesn't think Max's background would be a problem. It was the last time he set up a political party with his father. The one good thing about him screwing up motor racing is that he is not involved in real politics. Besides he would not make as much money doing that.

  • Rachel03/07/2009 at 23:09

    Technically though he's not supposed to be making money from the FIA Presidency - he just coincidentally became rich at the same time ;)

    and people don't keep retweeting hosting companies brand names over here.

  • Pat W04/07/2009 at 01:14

    for me it is to communicate with different groups of people about different things. luckily i've avoided most of the spam, still get the odd spammer follower but they are avoidable. presumably your problem is they @ you to get your attention, which is harder to avoid..

  • Jeremy04/07/2009 at 01:15

    tbh this is the same for me. the people i found either from my having a blog, or who led me to have a blog, mostly all of them are on twitter. it is interesting talking about a topic with one group and having people from another group weigh in with their perspective.

    If the Beeb are doing it that's a matter for their internal policy unit. They know full well they shouldn't be involved in commercial matters.

  • me04/07/2009 at 01:21

    If the Beeb are doing it that's a matter for their internal policy unit. They know full well they shouldn't be involved in commercial matters.

    i don't think they understood what they were doing. but then i don't think half the people retweeting the name know why they're doing it.

    and that makes it worse.

  • Pat W04/07/2009 at 01:22

    hehe. looking to the future, i see a twitter world full of spammers and no means of moderating or controlling it.

    This is very true unless they can develop much improved controls. I'm not convinced they will do it. If they don't, another service will come along and replace it, until the spammers work their way around that..

  • Jeremy04/07/2009 at 01:28

    [Max] would, Mr Ecclestone says, make an excellent Prime Minister. “I prefer strong leaders. Margaret Thatcher made decisions on the run and got the job done. She was the one who built this country up slowly. We’ve let it go down again. {Comment #3}

    The part of the UK I live in still hasn't recovered from Margaret Thatcher's attentions (particularly the way she destroyed the miner's unions and, indirectly, the entire industry). I suppose if that's Bernie's criterion for success, then proposing Max as an excellent Prime Minister makes perfect sense.

  • Alianora La Canta04/07/2009 at 11:03

    Bernie = Foot.In.Mouth. {Comment #31}

    The moment I saw the headline, I thought "Good thing for him he's in F1, else he'd be out of a job for saying that". Bearing in mind that this is the same bloke who wasn't told off by CVC or anyone else who might have had power over him (as far as I know) for saying that women should wear white to match other kitchen appliances in 2006, I think he'll get away with this. Doesn't mean it's right :(

    As my mum often says, "It's no use galloping if you are going in the wrong direction". Hitler may have been good at galloping but his sense of direction was so seriously misguided that he forever tarred the philosophies he espoused, including the ones (like collective organisation) that might have been beneficial to the world if wiser people with stronger senses of ethics had been in control.

  • Alianora La Canta04/07/2009 at 11:10

    Twitter is a conversation tool. Starting conversations and joining in those conversations of other people that look interesting will help a lot.

    Though to be honest, I'm going off Twitter for its refusal to function, seemingly whatever I try to get it to work. At this rate, it will be going in the same bin as BATRacer for the exact same reason.

  • Amy04/07/2009 at 11:21

    right, just put my usual $10 on Rubens for next weekend.

  • Alianora La Canta04/07/2009 at 11:23

    Why does Alia go through all that checking of sites? {Comment #53}

    I like to keep informed on F1 stuff and to have lots of different perspectives on it. While it's possible to get quite a few here, having the professional versions, the views of other sorts of amateurs and even the odd bit of aggregation helps a lot.

    It's also why I prefer Formula 1 Yearbook over Autocourse (I find Autocourse sees things in a very similar way to F1 Racing, and I already get that all year, whereas F1Y is written by French people - even if that sometimes shows in incomplete translations...)

    Incidentally, when I had Twitter working, I used to start that up as soon as I'd finished looking at grandprix.com. I'd search for "lacanta" (not everyone remembers to stick @ in front), "F1", "Formula 1" and some keywords relating to favourites. This used to get some interesting conversations, including with someone who works for Force India (and I don't mean @clubforce). Since not everyone is everywhere, there is always going to be a benefit to roaming across cyberspace rather than staying in one place. The trouble is that it's a question of diminishing returns and one cannot spend all one's time on Formula 1, however interesting it is (I believe Jeremy is discovering the truth of this last statement)...

  • Alianora La Canta04/07/2009 at 11:26

    looking to the future, i see a twitter world full of spammers and no means of moderating or controlling it. {Comment #55}

    Looking into the slightly-more-distant future, I see a world where a lot of ex-Twitterers have formed a new social network in protest at the lack of moderation/control of spammers (and virus-spreaders - there is now a virus spread through Twitter accounts).

  • Rocket (in Canberra)04/07/2009 at 11:26

    Do the FIA really think Brawn are that desperate that they’ll run new parts at a demo event? Seriously, it’s ridiculous. {Comment #124}

    My guess is they would be - but Bridgestone are supposed to allow demonstration tyres to be used for events like this. There's no rule forbidding new parts from being run in that instance anyway. Clearly these are just excuses - perhaps they're simply trying to avoid a potential repair job in the week.

    So monsieur Stuart C is in Porto (emptying wine cellars perhaps)? Interesting, I wanted to go but with Porto being a rather filthy hole decided to opt for Iberian GT trophy at Estoril this month and maybe Le Mans series at Portimão. Partly because I live closer to Estoril and the road is less boring.

    Me, that Lada pic you found yesterday is 2110 not the Priora. 2110 was designed in the late 1980s (see - I'm a Lada expert!) and became a big hit in the former USSR republics in mid-1990s, while new production model called Priora (no idea what's that supposed to mean) uses an outdated Renault chassis and engine combined with slightly modified 2110 bodywork. Not sure what engine does WTCC Priora uses, must be some mutant version of somebody else's engine. Lada is a sad story, I personally think IRC would've suited them better.

    It's a funny-looking thing. The rear quarterlight is such a slim piece of glass that you wonder why they bothered. Because it's a new car, Thompson has to carry 40kg extra. All that and 'new car' mechanical troubles too. One wag was heard to say, "Go and ask Thommo what the Russian for 's--tbox' is..."

    if that’s Bernie’s criterion for success

    As we're often told, Mussolini got the trains running on time. Perhaps we should reanimate him and put him in charge of National Express. Getting its moribund franchise to turn a profit can surely only have required a modest extension of his enviable skill set.

    Can anyone else think of any other deceased despots who could usefully be brought back into life and pressed into service?

  • Scott Woodwiss04/07/2009 at 18:03

    In Le Mans news, Peugeot dropped their protest against Audi.

    Hmm I wonder why... ;)

    The way I see it is:

    Before: "We'll never win since their parts aren't legal and make their car too fast"

    After: "Meh, we won. Who needs conflict?"

  • Christine04/07/2009 at 18:05

    Hmm I wonder why... ;)

    Indeed. Peugeot say it is because the ACO will work with them on grey areas now. There are always grey areas though, so chances are you're right.

  • Nick mobile04/07/2009 at 18:05

    I looked right up inside the audi, no one stopped me at all, maybe someone from pug did the same?

  • the Blue Orange Lion aka FOFA Chairman04/07/2009 at 18:40

    I agree, Lada has a model called Kalina, which looks a bit like 1990s Opel/Vauxhall Corsa, about the same size. It doesn't look as monstrous as Priora, they should've used it instead. The whole story behind Lada's participation in WTCC is a mystery to me: the Russian government bought the factory back from this guy Boris Berezovsky and his gang and tried to restore some national pride so to speak, because 1990s Ladas were simply falling apart right after leaving the conveyor belt, the quality was next to zero. Besides Lada doesn't sell cars in Western Europe as far as I'm concerned, but they do a lot within the former USSR, they had huge sales in the last 4 or 5 years, like the 4th place in the world ranking or something. This year's been a total misery, Putin had to inject muchos roubles (russian money) into Lada and they have a hefty debt towards parts suppliers. You might wonder why on Earth am I writing all this? Professional in a way, I've part-time job at a plastic injection mould factory, Lada's suppiers used to order a lot in Portugal.

    Anyway, I hope it's the last race held in Porto, Portimão is the place to be and so it'll be next year.

    's-tbox' in Russian should sound like 'govno', stress or emphasis is on the 1st syllable, now you can teach Thommo!

  • the Blue Orange Lion aka FOFA Chairman04/07/2009 at 18:48

    The more scientific way would be 'ga:vnoe' more or less, I don't have proper pronunciation symbols on my keyboard. A little bit of swearing but since nobody understands I hope it's OK.

    So am I. After all I did to talk it up and now I have 4 WSR tickets which are now going to go to waste. :(

    Were you planning to take anyone outside the family?

  • Scott Woodwiss04/07/2009 at 21:20

    I thought it was super exciting that your dad was working at Palmer Sport?

    Oh it is, don't get me wrong about that. It's good to say your dad gets paid to teach people how to drive race cars. :P

    Just a shame that I went to all that trouble to apply for the tickets and now it's not gonna happen. Ah well, that pitwalk will still happen next year.

  • Scott Woodwiss04/07/2009 at 21:21

    If we are meeting i would suggest the bottom of the sculpture at somepoint in the afternoon?

    Obviosuly, not with Jenson Button.

    We drink wine, listen to music, and laugh a lot. Life is good :)

    (By the way, we are also working hard. Have banked a couple of podcasts, writing a daily post, Mr C is sorting cables and stuff. We are not just drunken fools.)

    The best we can find is that it is about the drummer. We're thinking we should draw our own conclusions.

    Therefore we conclude, he accidentally killed his pet chameleon, given to him by his Bolivian friend. He is now occasionally racked with guilt.
