Welcome to Sunday, we are three days in to 2010 already. I hesitate to say time is flying, but seriously, that is quite scary. Five minutes ago we were seeing in the new year. Still, the F1 news is beginning to wake up again, and that means we will have to do the same. It's been a good holiday, so we'll make the most of this last day. Here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • Tony Fernandes has been speaking about the new era in Formula 1 and he believes that the the fresh teams and faces coming into the sport can only do it some good. He said the new ideas will be a bonus to F1, and should brighten it up. I am certainly hoping so.
  • Elsewhere, organisers at Silverstone are hoping they can deliver a spectacular event for fans - suggesting that the circuit will go back to its former glory, despite not having super duper investments, as somewhere like Abu Dhabi does. It's easy to say though, and I suspect they are just glad to have the race back. It might take some time before we see any major overhaul.
  • Finally, we had a great guest post with added pictures from JPancoast, who visited the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the museum there. I am a little disturbed by a couple of the wonky cars, but the pictures are great, so I highly recommend it.

Anyway, that's all for now, I hope you are having a fabulous weekend so far, and I will see you in the comments.

  • Jon Waldock03/01/2010 at 01:09

Got Dr Who Series 3 Soundtrack for Christmas.

I don't know how they do it every time, but the music just blows my mind

  • Alex Andronov03/01/2010 at 01:10

Because you can't really dust for vomit...

You know that scene outside when they are doing the interview there was the "script" for the movie. They didn't want to script it but they needed to submit something to get the movie greenlit. So when they were supposed to submit the script they submitted that interview instead and said... "it'll be a movie like this, but with more money we'll be able to move the camera and have the actors walk".

  • lou03/01/2010 at 01:10

  • Alex Andronov03/01/2010 at 01:13

Kat's one about the printer is ace!

Yeah. It's very funny. They are in negative equity with that printer! It would currently cost more to buy the toner than to buy a new printer!

Does it have soppy stuff in it? Mr C likes the soppy bit at the end...

  • Jon Waldock03/01/2010 at 02:05

I think i'm slowly leading the life Mr C does.... (as far as i'm aware..)

I stay up late coding, then sleep in till ages. Get up late, have food, do more coding, go to bed late....etc.

it's not a rom com.. its very sad in places.. but very very good... if its soppy stuff... i recommend either 500 days of summer... or ps i love you, although that's very very sad...

  • Jon Waldock03/01/2010 at 02:06

    who needs sunlight?

exactly! i have spent a larger proportion outside today though, so clearly not all of me is changing :P

  • Jon Waldock03/01/2010 at 02:09

we should contact the GMT people and tell them about your new time zone...

nah, they should just move GMT about 6 or 7 hours to the right, and just not tell everyone. get hte little time faires to change everyones clocks. winner.

We started high school around that time as well.

we started at 8.35 every day except it was 9am on Wednesdays. At uni I failed a subject with 8am lectures because I never went to them and after that year I chose my course based on the timetable instead of based on what subjects I wanted to do :D

yep. well i'm in school by 8, it technically starts at 8:30.

I've never heard of that before. Our school started at roughly 9.

  • lou03/01/2010 at 02:15

    Who starts school at 8am?

my school... :) hehe well 8:30.. but yeah.. school day is 8:30 - 4:30... but for sixth formers (who don't need to do an activity at the end of school) it's 8:30 - 3:30... which is a bit nicer.

  • Alex Andronov03/01/2010 at 02:15

4.30? they force you to do an activity? Gosh, your school sucks!

ahh well if it were up to me i'd be getting into school for 8:30, but mum drives me in... and i normally have a few teachers to see or something so it's good to get that out of the way at the beginning of the day.

  • Steven Roy03/01/2010 at 02:16

yep. well i'm in school by 8, it technically starts at 8:30.

You go early. My school always started at 9 and I don't think I was ever there 5 minutes before it started.

  • lou03/01/2010 at 02:17

I've never heard of that before. Our school started at roughly 9.

our first lesson is at 9:05, we have registration and assembly and things before hand though.

  • Steven Roy03/01/2010 at 02:17

We need to drag Earth slightly further away from the sun. Although then it would be a bit colder so maybe not.

But then global warming will balance it out and the greens will be insisting that we burn more petrol till the temperature is back to the current range.

  • Pat W03/01/2010 at 02:18

My sister lives in Spain and her bf is a teacher. They say the kids there start at 9 and work through to 5, but do have an extended lunch for the siesta.. Even young kids. They are very tired by the end of the day because on top of that, in that school they have to learn in 3 languages: English, Spanish (whatever the main one is called), and the local language in the area

  • Steven Roy03/01/2010 at 02:19

ehehe they never used to... but now it's like a compulsory thing for yrs 7-11.. it wasn't too bad when i was in yr 10 and 11 cause i learnt sign language, and did some beneficial sessions for gcses :) i now take a club and help out at another so it's kinda fun :)

  • Pat W03/01/2010 at 02:21

well.. my club is a film club which gives us all a chance to watch films that relate to psychology, and then we have a session talking about the psychology of it and how it relates to Alevel.. it's not too difficult, and only really requires knowing the Alevel course and renting the film from the school library :)

  • lou03/01/2010 at 02:24

ah, when I was in my final year of school I generally showed up 15 minutes late, and went home as soon as the bell rung. In the last few weeks of the year I also started skipping classes to go to the beach. I was the proxime accessit at the end of the year though :D

wow. i'm starting to get to the point where i just want to wake up and go to university in the morning.. or in fact just wake up, get to a track and take lots of photos. shame it's such a long way into the future suppose.

Right, all this talk of school is making me depressed (and losing to Nigeria didn't help). So night all and lotsa love. See ya hopefully in the afternoon.

Feels like an age for me, which is exactly the way I like it, couldn't wait to get away.

For me it's odd, I enjoyed the friends making bit and moving to a different place for 6th form was one of the best decisions I've made, but i never really got on with the education system, I love learning, just only about stuff I care about. My dad today said he never once saw me enjoying myself learning at school, but see's me love learning about the stuff I care about, i guess it just depends what makes you tick.

only some parts of it, because thats your dream job! My main worry is that it's 3 years after I finished uni and I still have a crappy job and I really thought I'd be well on my way to a career by now. Goal for this year: find a better job! (I said that last year, I didn't do it.)

  • Steven Roy03/01/2010 at 02:38

You always have to deal with the real world.

  • Pat W03/01/2010 at 02:39

I kind of miss it now, not having to worry about the real world was good!

I had too much else to worry about to be thinking of things like the real world or other people... struggling to multitask 9 GCSEs or however many it was... having to keep my head down from bombardment from petty annoying people... parents splitting up... not good times.

  • Steven Roy03/01/2010 at 02:39

thanks, am thinking the header may change depending on what page you're on...gp2 page = gp2 car etc. the mini ones with the stories will also change for each, but over all i like it. i spent ages trying to find a free template i liked and then played about with it!

    home?

    I haven't had a home since i was 12 years old.

There have just been places i have been staying 'for the mean time' or for a specific reason. It doesnt paticularly bother me, i like moving around, but it is getting a little out of hand. My stuff is spread out across 5 places in 3 different continents. Pretty much everything i have is in boxes.

My New Years resolution for this year is "find somewhere to call home"

Makes you wonder how they managed to race Group C cars with Ground Effects there!

I must say I hate Laguna Seca. It's a Mickey Mouse track, too tight, not enough of a straight and impossible to overtake on!

  • Journeyer03/01/2010 at 12:15

It's possible to overtake at Turn 1 - there's enough of a runoff at exit to make it work. But it'll take a lot of guts.

It is possible, but on iRacing very difficult to do without affecting your safety rating!

  • Lukeh03/01/2010 at 12:24

Any of you PSP'ers have the new PSP Go or the old one with the UMDs? I'm considering picking one up again, did have one but I got so bored of the lack of games on it, but even now if I did get one it would probably be more about playing old PS1 games on them than new PSP games...

Also, I want to play GT PSP :P

  • Journeyer03/01/2010 at 12:25

Very difficult indeed. The last corner is also a possibility - the braking required is heavy enough. But the straight isn't long enough to get a proper tow.

I have the old one (original Slim-2001).

The funny thing is - I hadn't used it for a year or so due to a lack of new games. But with the arrival of GT PSP, F1 2009, and some other non-F1 games (like NBA 2K10 and GTA Chinatown Wars), it made it a good idea to start playing again. :)

If you want to play old PS1 games then you are going to download a lot. So I'd suggest a PSP Go, as it has more memory. If you have old UMDs you want to play, I'd get a PSP3000

    Who starts school at 8am? {Comment #120}

I don't know - even my secondary school only started at 8:30am, and both primary school and sixth form started later and finished earlier. In fact, my primary school class got told off once because some of the students had turned up too early and in fact arrived before the teachers...

    We need to drag Earth slightly further away from the sun. Although then it would be a bit colder so maybe not. {Comment #123}

Alternatively, we could drill into the mantle of the earth and start lobbing some really heavy stuff down there (like maybe several crushed asteriods or essence of Venus). This would increase the density of Earth and thus slow down the rate at which Earth could turn without necessarily moving Earth further away from the Sun. However we would end up with the most temperamental volcano since the Cambrian period and some interesting weather could result*, so that might not be a wise plan.

    * - More cloud cover, potential rains of ashes on a frequent basis and - if the volcano was "turned off" after being in operation too long - a biblical flood. As in, the last time anything like this happened, it rained for a million years. Literally.

  • Alianora La Canta03/01/2010 at 14:28

    You are mad. Mine starts at the same time and I have perfected my routine so I get into school just as the first bell goes. {Comment #125}

At secondary school, I usually got outside the school gates for 8.15, because that allowed time to buy a cake or something from the bakery (which shut soon before I left after one too many pieces of red tape) before going to class.

However, some people must have got there a lot earlier because once, I arrived at school and there was an evacuation procedure in progress. Someone had hit the fire alarm for a joke and got suspended for it (the lesson didn't penetrate well enough, for that student got expelled about 18 months later after some other high jinks...)

    My sister lives in Spain and her bf is a teacher. They say the kids there start at 9 and work through to 5, but do have an extended lunch for the siesta.. Even young kids. They are very tired by the end of the day because on top of that, in that school they have to learn in 3 languages: English, Spanish (whatever the main one is called), and the local language in the area {}

The main one is indeed called Spanish :) And that does sound like a very long day. There were days when I couldn't do a seven-and-a-half-hour secondary school day and the attendant homework - a nine-hour day would have been impossible for me.

Mind you, I found out from a book called Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell that there is a school in Brooklyn called KIPP that teaches ten- to fourteen-year-olds from between 7:25am and 5pm Monday-Friday and an average of five hours each Saturday, not including extra activities (which can take up to an extra two hours) and gives out homework every night. Apparently the students are capable of surviving that long in school and get better grades than their peers in other schools in the area.

    You always have to deal with the real world {Comment #163}

The trouble is that the real world we (or at least I) have to deal with has little resemblance to what is claimed to be the real world. For some reason being a full-time student seems to shield one from the more idiotic aspects of the real world.

    Here's an article I wrote for anF1blog.com:

Certainly more balanced than most articles. I am not sure that blame KERS was the only issue that plagued the early part of Macca's last season.

KERS is basically a hybrid - in its first year it still got onto the podium a dozen times and won 3 races.

The problem I see is the expectation of bringing costs down and making the sport greener. The only way to achieve this is to free up regulations and limit the amount of fuel and tyres that can be used during the entire race weekend. Reducing the costs of consumables automatically will bring in some greeness.

I happen to agree with the greening of F1 - a certain amount can be done on the track - but as Joe said the environmental cost is the transport of people to the venue. I was really impressed with Joe's comments in his lat interview. Like you I believe in lifting of regulations and incentives rather than prescriptions. In all honesty the Todt is being more sensible and more of his own man than I expected but it is still early days.

This story was originally reported in the Swiss newspaper Blick - Peter Sauber often lets news through this channel and they correctly predicted that Qadbak was no longer the owners (sure everyone had a hunch) and BMW would be selling the team back to Sauber.

de la Rosa is an interesting choice - I am not sure he could bring much sponsorship revenue. At Nick Heidfeld's Xmas party for his fans he really was wanting either the Mercedes or the Sauber drive. As the newspaper confirmed that Nick was not their driver it had to be either Pedalo or Fisi.

If it's true, I'm surprised they picked Pedalo over Fisi. I guess Sauber doesn't want to be indebted to Ferrari, but Fisi has raced a lot more recently than Pedalo, and has been pretty good too.

As for Nick, he surely ends up at Renault now.

I have supported Sauber since their Le Mans debut - I am OK with Kamui but I dislike Pedalo and would rather Fisi despite his sexist statements about not wanting his daughter to do motor-racing.

The real question is where is Nick going? Does this indeed mean a seat at Renault (which I have been predicting against my personal choice). Is it actually a better option?

If he's not at Renault, he's not in F1 next season. He'd probably end up driving in DTM or LMS.

Nick really really wants to be in F1 and he is not a Ralf Schumacher as I think he still has the hunger to do well with the right F1 car. No one can do anything in the wrong F1 car, not even Alonso who is the best driver on the grid.

  • Lara W03/01/2010 at 16:45

Alonso mainly, I'm a bit obsessed! :) But I also like Glock. I don't mind many others like Button, Kubica and Trulli, for example

But what else is left? All of the big teams are already fully occupied, and Sauber seems to have no seats left as well.

One good reason Nick can go to Renault - Kubica would be his teammate. He's kept Kubica very honest at BMW, and would be more than a known quantity for Nick to beat.

I think Nick and Robert are one of the best two driver line-ups you can get. After all they at one stage were leading the constructors championship in the BMW Sauber during 2008. Renault's statements of wanting to be around the third best team looks less hyped with that driver combination.

He had done more races at F3000/GP2 level than anyone in history and was very lucky to win the championship. Bruno Senna despite a massive lack of experience was only 11 points behind him.

Lucas di Grassi despite missing 6 of the 20 races was only one point further back although he did do all the development driving on the new GP2 car. One point behind him was the massively underwhelming Grosjean.

I can't say I am surprised that Pantano didn't get another F1 drive

  • Steven Roy03/01/2010 at 17:18

sure he has no stake in the team - but he would know what the team should require - I was interested in that it confirmed my own feeling that Tim should not be in an F1 car.

    GMM

They will cut and paste any story, often without citing their source. Sometimes it will be correct but they can also produce a lot of rubbish - but so can the BBC which got caught on the latest mis-information.

Not news but it is views like any ex driver e.g. Irvine on Schumacher etc. At the moment there is no real news so they are dredging all they can.

of course. they have to hit their 20 made-up story quota for the day.

the question is, is it of any interest to the savvy f1 fan, or anyone at all for that matter. i say no.

  • Tom G03/01/2010 at 17:40

Anyone up for a bit of 'leading GMM down the garden path'? I could make some rather interesting and false news, post it on my blog, then someone directs GMM's attention to it... :)

the question is, is it of any interest to the savvy f1 fan, or anyone at all for that matter. i say no.

This is more of a story than a fake tweet from Peter Sauber saying the driver line-up will be confirmed next week.

Berger statement are in quotes which hopefully means it is actually his words albeit translated. By omission he is saying that their second driver was rubbish and should be replaced. They do at least identify the source which is "Germany's Auto Motor und Sport" which is generally OK.

The point is to look at the source of the news rather than simply who reported it in the English medium.

I think it is of interest.

  • Steven Roy03/01/2010 at 17:48

I don't think he knows my twitter account.

He must be tracking any mention of GMM on twitter bu as far as I know he has never commented on http://twitter.com/gmmf1

  • Tom G03/01/2010 at 17:48

    RG's tweet. Brilliant.

  • me03/01/2010 at 17:50

I think it is of interest.

fair enough. as a matter of course i personally refuse to link to any blog or site using gmm as a source of anything. doing so only encourages more of the same, and those sites don't deserve any traffic.

i encourage everyone else to do the same.

  • Steven Roy03/01/2010 at 17:51

I bet this piece was taken from a longer piece and then translated by Google. This is precisely the same method that lead to GMM announcing that Hockenheim were naming a grandstand after Vettel. When Kathi looked at the original German site it was a Ticket company offering a package called Vettel which involved seats in that grandstand. GMM can never be trusted when he is dealing with English never mind translating languages he has no knowledge of.

  • Rich03/01/2010 at 17:51

the sauber thing certainly did. although mr. gmm typically blamed everybody else but himself, and then managed to craft another "story" out of it fill the quota.

GMM were caught out on this one, but were one of the first to find it out to be fake and produce another article to reach their 20 target.

They really got caught on the PK to Campos which Joe reported on so well.

I am amazed anyone was caught out by that one. Adrian Campos has wanted an F1 team for years yet people were convinced that just as he was on the point of achieving it he would sell to Piquet senior.

yea but the actual source was not GMM (they are doing a translated cut and paste) but Auto Motor und Sport. Similar to Pedalo going to Sauber - it is actually reported by Blick and the other Swiss newspaper.

  • Steven Roy03/01/2010 at 17:54

He has to be doing ego searches. It must have been pointed out to him assuming he knows anyone else with an interest in F1

GMM is never the source of anything. They just pick up bits and pieces and either ignore the fact they come from a lousy source or mis-translate them. GMM has no idea whether this is true or not

  • Steven Roy03/01/2010 at 17:58

it was only a 15% share - it was very funny how even "respected" media got caught.

Since he failed to make a name for himself as a driver in F1 Campos has wanted to make a name for himself as a team owner. The last thing he is going to do is take on a high profile partner who the media would rather talk to.

  • Steven Roy03/01/2010 at 18:04

    madness.

People just naturally believe anything they read. If someone posted a story that kimi had changed his mind and signed for McLaren and McLaren had fired Button people would believe it.

A simple test to try this out is to tell people that the word gullible does not appear in any dictionary. You will be amazed how many people will come back and tell you it does.

    Good evening.

I'm gonna head to bed as well. Aiming to do some golf although it could be too cold.

It was. We went anyway. The course was covered in frost and patches of ice and the wind was biting. 3 deg C. I was wearing 4 layers and the exercise kept us mostly warm but it was too cold, we only did 9 of the 18 and headed home. Golf balls bounce in interesting ways on frosted grass :-)

An interesting exclusive interview with Gerhard Burger

    http://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/formel-1/interview-mit-gerhard-berger-schumacher-kann-um-den-wm-titel-mitfahren-1572207.html

Huge summarised it said the following...

Basically he likes the ban on fuel stops, feels that point systems should not be changed too frequently (as it confuses the public) but pole position should be credited but likes more cars on the grid (the additional six especially at tracks like Shanghai or Abu Dhabi). He was not a fan of the strategic fuel loads used for qualifying - wants the fastest drivers reflected in the grid positions. Thinks Red Bull and Vettel are the team driver to beat but not to discount Webber. At Macca Hamilton will do better than Jenson despite Jenson having the better racing line/style. He puts Mercedes ahead of McLaren and that Michael had not really left the sport and will be recharged and competitive for the title. If Nico can get the better of Michael his credit will increase. Ferrari are still in a recovering phase despite getting Alonso on board and that Felipe is in better shape that he thought earlier. For the new teams he has picked out Virgin to be the best - Nick Wirth is a good engineer (but opinionated). On Toro Rosso he thinks Buemi has talent but they need a good second driver to prevent slipping even further back. He has a lot of faith in Giorgio Ascanelli . BMW got things wrong and their aborted sale of the team was not a brilliant move. Peter Sauber has experience and is both a fighter and survivor. Renault paid the price of having Briatore in control and essentially squandered two years. They need to get back onto their feet but Robert is good choice on the driver side.

briatore gave them back-to-back world titles. if anyone were to shoulder the blame, would it not be symonds? he helped write the flippin' 2009 regs and still buggered it up.

I can understand to a point - so I may have made some mistakes - I could not completely understand what he was saying in places but as it was on MS it was not terribly important.

I consider GMM to have made a story out of really one sentence - they should not have used quotes. To me his prediction of Red Bull and Vettel and Adrian Newey as they best designer (when presented with a completely new design or "blank sheet") was more of the story.

I could not see that from your results or from points secured - Felipe had 22 points and Kimi only 10 at the point of the accident. Kimi certainly made good (arguably the best) use of KERS at the start but was hugely lucky to escape penalties like at Spa. The Ferrari certainly improved to around Monza, from that point they stopped any development.

He had done more races at F3000/GP2 level than anyone in history and was very lucky to win the championship. Bruno Senna despite a massive lack of experience was only 11 points behind him.

Right, but his team were hopeless before he joined, and that's the second time that's happened for him in GP2, where he turned a team around.

The Ferrari "improved" or the drivers got to learn how to get the best out of the car, but Felipe did not have the opportunity to show what he could do with the "improved" car or with more experience of the car. It is probably best not to make comparisons between Felipe and Kimi. You can only compare Felipe with Kimi for the races they both competed in - and Felipe was rather better.

I do think Kimi did well considering the car (one point short of Lewis in car that was no where near as good?). Kimi has fired because of a lack commitment to the team. Statements like we have seen more of Fernando at Ferrari that Kimi in last two years, Kimi not bothering to communicate with Felipe after his accident.

I did a very complicated analysis but the results actually showed that against what could be expected of the car Kimi, Fernando did well and Nick reasonable. Both Red Bull drivers under-performed as did both Toyota drivers.

STS 131 is scheduled for March 18th. So with a bit of luck we should get two launches before the second race of the season.

The final shuttle mission ever should launch on September 16th. BOO

According to Skybet these are the odd for the Driver's championship

    Hamilton, L 5/2

    Alonso, F 4/1

    Schumacher M 4/1

    Vettel, S 13/2

    Button, J 7/1

    Massa, F 9/1

    Rosberg, N 14/1

    Webber, M 16/1

    Kubica, R 25/1

    Heidfeld, N 33/1

If I were a betting person I would put on either or both Red Bull drivers.

Well who knows? I am having this discussion on another forum and it's doing my head in. Apparently it's not a good idea to compare drivers like I did because all the cars are different. Yet we had 6 races with 7 different winners and the whole field had less than a second and a half spread.

Which analysis was this that you did? Is it the one where we all threw up our arms because you changed loads of stuff a few weeks ago?

I am saying you need to compare like with like. He made a statement that Kimi did better than Felipe without looking at all of the assumptions in the comparison. For the races they BOTH competed in Felipe returned 22 points compared to Kimi's 10 points - that is not the full picture either but a picture that reverses the conclusion reached by Gavin.

  • Lady Snowcat03/01/2010 at 20:49

The obviously both championship are meaningless to you - but it is how the assessment is made, it is how money from broadcasting is divided among the teams.

I do not say it is everything in assessing a driver - Felipe had terrible luck even before his accident like the false reporting of fuel having to concede positions and a retirement while in a good scoring position. Per race start Felipe has return more wins than Kimi while team mates.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)03/01/2010 at 20:59

    Rich,

With all due respect, these are the results I have from my spreadsheets. I have included the Hungarian Grand Prix even though Massa did not race there, because he qualified and could not race. Therefore he appears as an entrant.

Average Finishing Position: both scored 10.10

Points: Massa scored 22, Raikkonen 18. Both average at 4.5

Fastest Laps: Kimi averages 9th and Massa 9½th

Average Speed (The 'Dash' from my consistency graphs): Massa 7.9 Raikkonen 9.7

Consistency (The 'Stalk' from my consistency graphs): Kimi 8.5 Massa 10.4

I would say that's damn close to even and shortly after Hungary they stopped developing the car - so Kimi's best results were when the car was getting worse not better.

And do not tell me I don't know what I am doing and that I am so wrong. You should know better than most people here that data can be interpreted any number of ways to suit one's ends - I seem to remember you made some kind of qualifying analysis that cooked the books to make Heidfeld look good and we all said that you couldn't do it how you did (I don't remember the exact details). What I do remember is that I asked to look at the data and you never provided it. At the time I was polite but critical.

To imply that I do not have a basic understanding of analysis is so off the mark and very insulting. The blog is there just for fun and to get people talking. There is no need to start mudslinging just because the driver you dislike did better than the one you liked. I try and be as unbiased as possible here else I may as well just start a fanboy-blog.

My only point was that Kimi was not awful in that car at all - certainly not bad enough to be fired for it. He in fact did surprisingly well, just because of his personality and because Ferrari seem to be good at stabbing in the back whilst smiling in the face, he has been fired for money reasons only.

Including me (since I originally learned about the existence of that word from a dictionary, I don't even need to bother looking one up now to tell you this...)

  • Rich03/01/2010 at 21:22

We agree on the point that Kimi was not terrible - but you implied Kimi was doing better than Felipe - not even equal but better. There are mistakes of comparison. Race strategies are calculated based on points rewarded not in the actual rank positions. So in essence everything below 8th position last year is actually irrelevant. Personally I would not include Felipe in your analysis - there is interesting stuff without the Red Herring of Massa. I do no accept your conclusion that Ferrari was in decline after Hungary - up to Hungary Kimi return 1.1 points per race from Hungary onwards he returned 4.75 points per race.

  • Alianora La Canta03/01/2010 at 21:25

    Right, but his team were hopeless before he joined, and that's the second time that's happened for him in GP2, where he turned a team around. {Comment #389}

True, and team-rescuing is a very useful skill to possess - but few self-respecting F1 teams would admit they needed turning around even if it was true and within Giorgio's capabilities (not a given, since F1 teams are considerably larger than GP2 ones).

  • Pat W03/01/2010 at 21:26

Gavin, I am sorry you are so wrong in comparing performance in 11 races for Felipe with Kimi in 17 races. Look at the result for the races they both competed in - you will see a completely different picture.

I do not have the experience or technical ability of Gavin or probably Rich either, but I do know that throughout my maths and accounting studies I have always been told, on pain of death almost, to compare things like with like. You can only make reasonable assumptions.

It is not possible to compare 11 races to 17 because we have no idea what Massa could or would have done in those 6 races. Therefore you must do one of two things. Either compare a) the 11 races in which both competed, or b) take a trend of Massa's performances to date and use them to extrapolate his likely performances over those later races, noting that you can't do that unless you have enough races to get an accurate idea, so you can't do that for Badoer for example.

Let's go back to the reasonable assumptions though. Did Felipe vs Kimi, up to and including Germany, come out in Felipe's favour or Kimi's? It is reasonable to assume that whichever way round it was, and we can't necessarily tell from championship points, it is reasonable to assume this balance would have remained for the rest of the year, regardless of what the car was doing.

However it is also reasonable to assume that Kimi stepped up his game later in the year because he knew his 2010 career was on the line.

  • Rich03/01/2010 at 21:27

I would argue that Kimi's year had Lewis and Nando fighting against each other, whilst Massa had a harder fight...potentially. I wouldn't say it's fair to compare

It is really difficult to compare - I think most people's gut feeling is Kimi is a better racer and other than securing a WDC by one point you cannot statistically show this to be the case.

People say Michael is the most successful F1 driver ever - but if you look at wins from race starts (which equalizes for the fewer races in the 50's) Fangio is statistically more successful.

  • Jon Waldock03/01/2010 at 21:29

People say Michael is the most successful F1 driver ever - but if you look at wins from race starts (which equalizes for the fewer races in the 50's) Fangio is statistically more successful.

And as to the car getting better after Felipe left... as they stopped developing it then that is rubbish.....

    But I won't start that all over again..... {Comment #418}

I thought Ferrari stopped developing the car the race before Hungary? It was more to do with the car's performance template being a less extreme version of the Force India once the KERS and engine braking is taken out of consideration. So the car was bound to be better on the lower-downforce circuits (note that when the Force India was slow at Singapore and Abu Dhabi, the Ferrari lost the edge it had possessed in Spa and Monza too).

If Ferrari had been in the trouble it was and somehow Kimi and Felipe had both been available, I think Kimi may well have been victorious. Raikkonen may not perform well when his team is in a middling state, but if his team is in serious trouble, he finds an extra gear and become near-unstoppable. And Ferrari in late 2009 was in serious trouble.

  • Jon Waldock03/01/2010 at 21:36

  • Rich03/01/2010 at 21:38

Sauber did say they would reveal their 2nd driver this week. Wonder if we'll get any news tomorrow.

That was traced to a tweet falsified in Peter Sauber's name.

if it's anything like the photography/ art portfolio i need to have, they will not necessarily want you to hand it in. you'll take it with you, have an interview/ portfolio viewing and that will be that. I'd suggest burning your portfolio onto a cd that you can give them.. (plus it's good to have a spare copy).

I need to give NUCA a call tomorrow, which I've been meaning to do, and find out what I need to do to give myself the best chance.

  • Rich03/01/2010 at 21:41

I thought Ferrari stopped developing the car the race before Hungary? It was more to do with the car's performance template being a less extreme version of the Force India once the KERS and engine braking is taken out of consideration. So the car was bound to be better on the lower-downforce circuits (note that when the Force India was slow at Singapore and Abu Dhabi, the Ferrari lost the edge it had possessed in Spa and Monza too).

I thought they stopped developing after Monza. Not withstanding that I think your comparison with Force India is very insightful and does explain a lot. Ferrari were in trouble from the start since their design was the least compatible with a double diffuser.

I've got a few ideas for videos in my head, I just need to get them on paper and sort out what I need to do.

One involves Forza 3 and for that, I need my 360 fixing, which I still haven't sent off. Goddamn label that needs to be printed off.

  • Rich03/01/2010 at 21:44

But he didn't start an F1 race until he was 39

What is your take on Fangio - greater than Schumacher? I know he was the absolute gentle men - he was kidnapped - but after release he kept in communication with his kidnappers.

ASAP! You can call the admissions tutor for the course and ask for advice on your portfolio as well :-) If its a HE course you'll find that although you are competing against a lot of people with A levels *and* a foundation course, the amount of AV/Film that most of them will have done in college will be small, and on top of that only the most dedicated will have done extra. And the course is there to enable you to learn how and to polish yourself, so they aren't looking for students who already have the ness 'know how' but at potential (and that can be artistically as much as technically).

Yes! Yhe point of foundation is for you to find out what you are good at, and to prepare you for a diploma/degree.

    My only point was that Kimi was not awful in that car at all - certainly not bad enough to be fired for it. He in fact did surprisingly well, just because of his personality and because Ferrari seem to be good at stabbing in the back whilst smiling in the face, he has been fired for money reasons only. {Comment #435}

I have a sneaking suspicion that what got Kimi fired wasn't what he did (on the race track or off) so much as what he didn't do. A bit like Felipe Massa and his original Ferrari race engineer, Gabriele Delli Colli, who'd previously worked with Rubens Barrichello. As Felipe himself said, "He was very good, very professional, but we didn't gel". Happily, his next race engineer was Rob Smedley and the rest is history.

The question is whether Alonso can be to Ferrari what Rob was to Felipe, or whether Ferrari should have tried harder to accommodate Kimi's method of team integration.

It's very difficult to compare. Fangio should have been in F1 10 years earlier but F1 didn't exist then. Drivers then were not pushing to the limit of the car but instead were driving to a safe limit. I think Fangio probably had more an of an advantage over his rivals than Schumacher had but it is hard to prove one way or the other.

  • Scott Woodwiss03/01/2010 at 21:51

Yes! Yhe point of foundation is for you to find out what you are good at, and to prepare you for a diploma/degree.

I'll give em a call tomorrow and find out what I can. It's a course which I think I'd be quite good at. It's more of a practical, hands-on course it seems and since it involves a lot of working on computers and video editing software, it's right up my street. Plus, I can work my love of cars and motosport and F1 into it. When I was doing Art at AS level, I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would as the unit was a bit restricted in what you could and couldn't do.

  • me03/01/2010 at 21:54

    oops, thread fail.

  • Alianora La Canta03/01/2010 at 21:54

I've been messing around in last.fm and now have an artist page. Useful for having somewhere to store my podcasts...

    How much space do you have? I see that drop.io offers an iTunes feed as well... {Comment #439}

If there's a space limit, I haven't found it yet. The downside is that it's very picky about format requirements (128kb/s MP3 in stereo at 44.1kHz or one of half-a-dozen formats of video). The upside is that it doesn't take massive amounts of hunting to get a particular track downloaded once it's there. I could even put paid content up if I ever produce anything worth paying for.

    AS at the moment, but I'm doing Maths and Further Maths. It all makes no sense to me anyway, pretty much. {Comment #467}

Any particular bit making less sense? I did A-Level Maths a few years ago and might be able to help explain stuff. Though I only got an E in it, so my fellow commenters may find themselves correcting me...
