Back to the grindstone, today, then, as the year of work begins again. It's Franck's birthday tomorrow and I'm mentioning it today because firstly, I will probably forget when it matters, and secondly, it's nice to start the week with a mention of Franck, and hopefully he'll get a mention tomorrow as well. Meanwhile, here are some of the things on our radar today:

  • Ollie has a post with some updates on when we can expect testing action this week. You can also see the new version of his site, with more featured posts, and a little bit more colour. Keep an eye on it, and let Ollie know what you think.
  • Gavin has another post from his 2009 in review series, and this time he's looking at qualifying and how the drivers compare to each other. It's a good read so make sure you head on over to look at the graphs. Apparently the next one will be about fastest laps, which should also be good.
  • I posted the review of the Best Comments of the Year wiki page yesterday. It was supposed to be a poll where we selected the best one, but there were so many good ones, I figured that we could just pick out a couple and point you towards the rest.

That should do it for now, let us know how your Monday is going and I will see you in the comments.

Didn't think that was allowed round here. I am sure it won't become a habit. We can't have one year where everyone is awake half the night followed by one where everyone is in bed by 10pm

heheh. i'm so not ready to go back to work, tomorrow morning will be a killer.

I have a feeling a lot of people are not going to like Monday!

Mixed feelings here. I feel like doing some work, oddly. The morning will hurt though, and I'm on phone duty because someone is on holiday all week, and I hate phones and talking out loud.

plus getting up even earlier because there'll be a frost/ice and the roads will be bad, car needs scraping...

does @lotusf1team do anything OTHER than RT others?

  • Alison04/01/2010 at 00:39

you can't start the year grumpy :(

Apparently I can I'm afraid. It's nothing serious. Just had a really nasty fight with my parents.... Boooooo!!

    not a thing.

  • Pat W04/01/2010 at 00:39

    with damage?

I'm doing a 25%-distance championship as Mark Webber. 14 laps or so each, no damage and auto gears but all other assists turned off and I'm insisting on cockpit view. So far I've been 3rd at Melbourne and Sepang.

I agree. I was really grumpy over NYE and NY itself but people here helped and so did talking it over with Mum. Surely there's someone you can talk to.

Parents will always be a problem. It doesn't matter how old you get they think they know better. Even after you pass the magic day where you can tell one of them that you remember what they were like at your age. Never seen a look of shock like that in my life.

The other thing about wordpress (and why I moved to wordpress.com): You _HAVE_ to keep it up to date! It certainly wasn't written with security in mind.

quite a bit. it's better now there's the one-press upgrade. but every plugin needs the same treatment and the seem to update them once a week. it's madness.

Basically....i signed up to a host before (the wordpress 1-click ones) but as i was using feederseries.co.uk it wouldnt work, so now i've tried a new domain and it's perfect, will add .co.uk when site is up and running properly!

they use the post rather than a courier?

  • Amy04/01/2010 at 02:19

the couriers work for australia post. The problem is they dont bother trying to deliver the packages or leave the you werent home cards in our mail box so packages sometimes sit at the post office for 2 weeks before the couriers bother to drop off the "you werent home" card. We once got 9 cards all on the same day, all with different dates of supposed attempted delivery. We laid a complaint but auspost say there is nothing they can do even though they know its a huge issue.

fair enough. seems like an oversight on their part, plenty of blogs are doing that layout, you can't be the only one after that look.

  • Amy04/01/2010 at 02:40

i had it planned but had not made enough allowance for travel time and also not enough allowance to have enough time in the places i really want to go. I am going to have to drop munich from the first leg for the same reason.

would have been so much easier if they had, but i dont mind, i can now host all my postcasts on the one server if i so choose, not sure if i will yet, would be alot easier, just need to work out a way to see how many hits/subscribers i get for each podcasts

  • Amy04/01/2010 at 02:51

considering how much i hated singapore as a city and said i wouldnt go back you might be on to something there.

  • Journeyer04/01/2010 at 02:51

have had it for decades at least. ;)

why'd you hate it? i loved the place. i wouldn't live there, but i'd definitely visit as a tourist.

  • Jon Waldock04/01/2010 at 02:53

move to the EU, gain british citizenship, get a British Passport, move to spain

    EASY

    You are half Welsh

  • Amy04/01/2010 at 02:58

i found the weather too much and i felt like after 2 days i had seen everything i wanted to see. And i thought sentosa was the tackiest tourist trap ive ever seen. And i didnt like the food. People rave about the hawker stalls but i have a very western palate :(

  • Amy04/01/2010 at 02:59

i am 1/4 welsh. I can use my grandfathers birth cert to get an ancestry visa to the uk which makes getting a uk passport easy. But i want to skip that and go straight to spain!

Surprisingly, outside of the circuit (including the historic Padang), we saw nothing (except Raffles Hotel and that parking lot of Ferraris...)

Would love to go back - Merlion, Sentosa, Night Safari, Singapore Flyer - lots yet to see. :)

  • Journeyer04/01/2010 at 03:01

As a Euro citizen, wouldn't that already be automatic?

Once you have an EU passport you can go anywhere in the EU but I wouldn't have thought Kiwis were banned from Spain

Very productive indeed. :) What's your eye grade, if you don't mind me asking?

  • Amy04/01/2010 at 04:23

i am about as least blind as its possible to be and still fail the eye test to get a new zealand drivers license. -1.5 in my right eye and -1.75 in my left. I dont even wear my glasses most of the time :D

my theory is that as old people get more long sighted as they age (all of my family have anyway) that it will happen to me and the longsightedness will cancel out the shortsightedness and i will have perfect vision. I dont care that thats not how it works, it will work for me!

Looking for a reasonable hotel for our family in Shanghai is hard work...

We'll have to live and die by the metro plus whatever the circuit provides for shuttles. Going around by taxi looks deadly - you even have to print the address for them to have a chance at understanding... :O

  • Amy04/01/2010 at 05:29

definitely sounds like spc is going to have to claim a table at one of the bars at albert park! If only everyone had advantage membership, their bars are the best because they are trackside.

  • Kathi04/01/2010 at 05:35

    Good morning,

it's snowing and a far too warm -9. Other than that I'm waiting for someone of the student housing organisation to come and inspect the room of my flatmate who moved out yesterday.

  • Amy04/01/2010 at 05:36

morning kathi. What part of finland is it you are in again?

  • Kathi04/01/2010 at 05:38

Jyväskylä, home of the Finnish rally.

definitely sounds like spc is going to have to claim a table at one of the bars at albert park! If only everyone had advantage membership, their bars are the best because they are trackside.

Count me in!! and I am sure we could find a way of getting people in there, (legally of course).

  • Lorenzo04/01/2010 at 05:44

We'll have to live and die by the metro plus whatever the circuit provides for shuttles. Going around by taxi looks deadly - you even have to print the address for them to have a chance at understanding... :O

I was there in 2004 for the first race and the shuttles were brilliant, except on Sunday night, when for some reason the Police stopped the shuttles from going anywhere near the city on the return leg, and everyone was evacuated unexpectedly about 20km's from town and had to fight for our own way back.

Let me tell you that getting a cab somewhere between Shanghai and "where the heck am I??" was not easy, especially when you were fighting against every other person who got booted out there also. Be prepared, have spare cash with you and carry a business card from your hotel, with the address written in Chinese, so the Cab driver can have at least a fair shot at getting you near your hotel. No guarantees though.

    Other than that enjoy!!

  • Amy04/01/2010 at 05:59

petes bar is where team mclaren members meet and its always good, so spc could meet there too. As long as people are not in GA of course :D

  • Rich04/01/2010 at 07:01

And old article (14 December) sourced from Le Parisien claims the three drivers Renault were interested in were Heidfeld, Kobayashi and Kovalainen. We know where two drivers are going and it is not Renault. Various Swiss newspapers have claimed that Peter Sauber has admitted that Sauber will not be employing Nick but another experienced driver (Pedalo being linked). Is this sufficient to announce Nick at Renault via Twitter?

Very well sir. Congrats on getting the Chinese GP tickets - it must be a dream come true for you to see your idol.

I myself have already seen him at a Grand Prix, but that was a while ago ;)

  • Journeyer04/01/2010 at 07:58

I hope he proves me wrong and is fighting fit - I want to see my idol, not a shadow of him. ;)

I don't think he would return if he didn't think he could do it. I must admit the idea of his comeback is growing on me - the challenge of it and all. Could be lots of fun!

And thanks to the advent of required autograph sessions, I actually have a proper chance of getting his siggie! :D

    When is the Chinese GP?

I don't think he would return if he didn't think he could do it. I must admit the idea of his comeback is growing on me - the challenge of it and all. Could be lots of fun!

It's very marginal for me - how would he know he can do it, if he hasn't even driven a 2009 car yet? That's what worries me.

Good luck with that - Would be awesome for you to get it :D

This IS China, though - the land who adopted Michael Schumacher when they did the RoC in Beijing. I'll have to get there nice and early if I want to fit into that 15 minute window...

    When is the Chinese GP?

It's the 4th round of the championship, on the 18th of April. 104 days to go!

  • Journeyer04/01/2010 at 08:05

i think your idol should just race in china for you and melbourne would be alright because i wouldnt mind seeing him once. kimi can do the rest ;)

HAHA! Even if Schumi dropped out early, that would be because he didn't do well - I wouldn't want that! And Kimi is already contracted to Citroen - if Schumi dropped out, they'd probably ask di Resta, Davidson, or even Nico Hulkenberg to replace him.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)04/01/2010 at 08:08

  • Journeyer04/01/2010 at 08:09

What's the bet that Kimi has an opt-out clause in his contract?

I'm sure there is one after Year 1, but I'm not sure if there is one available midseason...

And would Red Bull (who's paying for his drive) let him return to F1 in a Merc rather than a Red Bull?

  • Journeyer04/01/2010 at 08:10

For the Sidepodders going to Spa, it should be bucketloads of fun if and when Schumi races there again...

I don't know about you, but seeing Kimi disinterested in 2009 (and much of his Ferrari stint for that matter), was hard to watch, as much as I love him he only very rarely delivered the kind of performances that used to scare the life outta me, when he was in a McLaren.

It was obvious to me that the front wing was a lot more developed than other teams - for example BMW's looked like it was taken from a piece of guttering!

Me... not so much. Well, if they were gonna do it for pole, at least they did it now, with the cars all running low fuel. But still, I don't think this is a needed change at all.

  • Lukeh04/01/2010 at 10:36

The pole one doesn't make as much sense now as a fastest lap point, I agree. If we still has strategies in qualifying and the like, sure it'd be useful but it makes sense why it wouldn't work with the current regulations.

Fastest lap though all the way for me though.

Really...? I thought it was better now - as it's now an indicator of who really was the fastest on Saturday, rather than in previous years, when strategy always played a part and made it unclear who was really fastest.

Pole does make sense now as it's a fair fight without Fuel corrections.

Fastest Lap can be abused, for example Webber in Japan this year. His race was ruined so he came in and did a run on fumes with new tyres just because.

If they're really insisting on this, they have to do it like they do it in GP2 - it only counts if you're in the Top 10, otherwise, no point is awarded.

  • Rich04/01/2010 at 10:57

Rather than fastest lap why not point(s) for a driver leading the most number of laps.

If it is only one point awarded it will not make a huge difference.

Like in NASCAR? I wouldn't say no to that, because it would award somebody who was consistently fast.

Nine times out of ten that would be the winner though, wouldn't it? At least the fastest lap is sometimes a surprise.

  • Nick in Dubai04/01/2010 at 11:01

If they are giving a point for fastest lap to the driver, then why not one to the team with the fastest pitstop?

Although i think the whole thing is very mickey mouse.

    What next?

Point for the most dramatic gesture on the pit wall?

Point for the biggest tyre lock up?

Point for the most sideways moment?

    Point for the biggest crash?

Point for the cleanest car at the end of the race?

  • Rich04/01/2010 at 11:02

That is a valid point and it is often different to the winner - if applied to the past both Kovy and Nick would have two extra points!

Has any one noticed how GMM puts one story out, and in only a few hours denies the validity of that story with a new story - Pedalo to Sauber is now being denied.

It also seems that use of their mis-information is being more widely used by other sites.

  • Amy04/01/2010 at 12:31

    Amy, are you still around?

    aye

  • Kathi04/01/2010 at 12:34

    aye

I may have forgotten to ask: On which day do you want to arrive at the camping site?

  • Alex Andronov04/01/2010 at 12:34

I see that to add to Schumacher... Nigel Mansell is coming back...

    ...but to Le Mans.

  • Amy04/01/2010 at 12:34

I may have forgotten to ask: On which day do you want to arrive at the camping site?

All I know is I am arriving in London on Monday. I do not know what happens from there!

  • Alex Andronov04/01/2010 at 12:35

All I know is I am arriving in London on Monday. I do not know what happens from there!

    Agenda:

Monday - Arrive in London meet Bassano....

    ...

    ...

    ....

    Some time passes...

    ....

    ...

    ...

Wake up in Spa clutching can of Guinness

    ;)

  • Amy04/01/2010 at 12:36

    ;)

    And you think you're joking!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)04/01/2010 at 12:37

I see that to add to Schumacher... Nigel Mansell is coming back...

    ...but to Le Mans.

I remember reading that Mansell has always wanted to do Le Mans but it was Colin Chapman that stopped him doing it (too risky) or something...

  • Kathi04/01/2010 at 12:38

All I know is I am arriving in London on Monday. I do not know what happens from there!

We can get the key to our luxurious motorhome after 3pm. I guess it depends how much exploring you want to do before the race.

  • Kathi04/01/2010 at 12:40

I may have done something stupid: Mr or Mrs C, could you delete the picture of where you can find our valuables during the GP weekend from the very public drop.io, please.

oh no, decisions! I figure it's all up to when the driver wants to arrive, so ask Mr Clapper :D

  • Dank04/01/2010 at 12:40

I see that to add to Schumacher... Nigel Mansell is coming back...

Nothing guaranteed for the actual 24 hour event though.

Selection takes place end of this month, with priority given to those that competed in 2009 ALMS, LMS or Asian Le Mans.

  • Kathi04/01/2010 at 12:46

    ok.

    http://www.aut...s/report.php/id/80729

    It's the Kubinator!

  • Journeyer04/01/2010 at 12:57

Sauber...? Well, he knows the team.

They'll have limited potential due to limited funds - and they won't be a works team either, like Renault would be.

Basically, once Schumi was announced at Mercedes, Kubica had nowhere else to go.

Is Kubica gonna end up as one of those drivers who always were in the wrong team at the wrong time?

    Apart from '08, probably.

08 is included because he was better than what the team were prepared to give him :(

  • Journeyer04/01/2010 at 13:00

Is Kubica gonna end up as one of those drivers who always were in the wrong team at the wrong time?

I suspect that if Vettel ends up at Mercedes in 2011, Kubica will be Ferrari's second choice (and Alonso's preferred choice) to replace Massa if he doesn't meet expectations.

  • Journeyer04/01/2010 at 13:01

He said that last year. Last week's Autosport said he's going to Superstars which is a touring car series in Italy, the boss of it said so, although they hadn't actually asked him yet.

    Here's the LMP story http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/80728

a bit like Heidfeld - I still think if Nick joins Robert at Renault they could be a dark horse for 2010 season. The engines strong and they have produced winners in the past and each driver will push the other.

  • Journeyer04/01/2010 at 13:15

In fact, ALL the old Crystal Maze EPs are on YouTube. ;)

  • Rich04/01/2010 at 13:18

But they also started work on their 2009 car early, right?

They have given mixed messages here - Nick during an interview at his Xmas fan party claimed they kept the development of 2008 car - the results do not seem to confirm this. It is not widely known but BMW virtually redesigned their car during 2009.

  • Journeyer04/01/2010 at 13:18

Why did you think Massa will be replaced?

I'm not sure yet one way or the other - it just depends on his 2010 performance. One thing to note is that his mentor Schumacher is no longer at Maranello, although this is more than offset by Massa having built his own relationships with those at the team, including Rob Smedley.

  • Danny04/01/2010 at 13:18

  • Alianora La Canta04/01/2010 at 15:11

Surprisingly, outside of the circuit (including the historic Padang), we saw nothing (except Raffles Hotel and that parking lot of Ferraris...)

    Would love to go back - Merlion, Sentosa, Night Safari, Singapore Flyer - lots yet to see. :) {Comment #127}

I'd love to go to Singapore - especially since I'd get to see my best friend and stay at her house (solving the "what to do", "how to pay for accommodation" and even "who to go with" (some of her friends are interested in motorsport) - but flights and tickets are not cheap at all...

The problem is that there are lots of races I'd like to see: Spa, Monza, Istanbul, Suzuka, Australia, Brazil, Britain... ...so many things to do, so little resources to do them with...

  • Alianora La Canta04/01/2010 at 15:12

  • Pat W04/01/2010 at 15:15

    Breakout then?

what for? it would only be news if he changed..

  • Alianora La Canta04/01/2010 at 15:22

my theory is that as old people get more long sighted as they age (all of my family have anyway) that it will happen to me and the longsightedness will cancel out the shortsightedness and i will have perfect vision. I dont care that thats not how it works, it will work for me!

    Wouldn't you just end up with astigmatism? {Comment #154}

No. Astigmatism and long/short-sightedness are independent of one another - astigmatism affects how much curvature you see in straight lines (people with non-astigmatic eyesight see straight lines as straight without correction from either brain or glasses) . Long/shortsightedness affects your focal points and the clarity seen at short/long distances respectively (normosighted people had an average focal point and see near and distant objects at a tolerable level of clarity without correction from glasses).

A lot of people have both astigmatism and long/short-sightedness, but if you have short-sightedness and genetic tendency to longsightedness kicks in later on, all that would happen is that the short-sightedness would be reduced. Of course, other genetic combinations affect astigmatism, but they are not necessarily combined.

  • Journeyer04/01/2010 at 15:23

    So basically, Amy is right?

  • Alianora La Canta04/01/2010 at 15:25

    We'll have to live and die by the metro plus whatever the circuit provides for shuttles. Going around by taxi looks deadly - you even have to print the address for them to have a chance at understanding... :O {Comment #158}

That sounds unpleasant. And that's before you consider the driving standards over there. On the whole, I think relying on the metro and shuttles makes more sense.

  • Alianora La Canta04/01/2010 at 15:31

    So basically, Amy is right? {Comment #411}

Correct. An optician would know more about the subject than me though...

(In case anyone's wondering, I found out because I've seen the independence of the two optical traits in action - I'm short-sighted, but developed astigmatism several years after the short-sightedness began). That was basically the explanation I got from my optician when I asked about this (I remember being quite annoyed at the time).

  • Scott Woodwiss04/01/2010 at 15:33

    Hey guys

I've just had a chat with Norwich University College of the Arts about the Foundation Degree Film and Video course. As Lou pointed out the deadline for applications is January 15th, but all applications are accepted and get an interview, which is good.

I did ask about putting together a portfolio and what I could do. It doesn't just have to be video material. I can bring along ideas which I have and also I suggested even a few pieces of music which I like and explain what ideas that would fit with it whilst it's playing. I've got a couple of video ideas already which I could put together. Interviews take place in late January and early February so I've got a bit of time to get something together.

One more thing - I did ask if personally the woman I was speaking to thought I had a good chance of getting on the course, and she said that although it's hard to judge without seeing any work, by the way I put forward my ideas and explained them, she though I had a very good chance. Yay! :D

    I just found the January issue of F1 Racing on my bed, gosh it's horribly out of date already :D {Comment #220}

It was like computers in the mid-90s - the new ones were always cool to have, but obsolete before the box was open...

I still need to do my application yet. I registered with UCAS last week but stopped at doing my personal statement because I wasn't sure how to write it. But now that I know that all applications get an interview, I can get to planning out what I want to write. I've got a good idea, just need to get it all down :P

    I say good riddance to them. {Comment #245}

I say the same - and that this is one of the few occasions where F1 could learn something major from football. A "fit and proper persons" test of sufficient intensity could have resolved this mess several months ago and spared the Hinwil staff and BMW board much worry and stress.

  • Scott Woodwiss04/01/2010 at 15:54

No, im 99% sure foundations are self funded, but give the college a call.

  • Lukeh04/01/2010 at 15:56

Afternoon Mr Lukeh. how art thou?

I'm ok. Back to doing coding and whatnot, which I hate, but I'm back doing Java rather than C++ so it's not too bad.

We're all fed up of our uni as well, at the end of the year I think we're all lodging complaints against how pathetic the past 2 1/2 years have been run. For example this assignment I'm doing now is stuff we've never been taught to do (implementing 3rd party PROLOG program into java) and it's just the same thing over and over again, no help from lecturers, no organisation, allsorts of problems and the way they've addressed us over the past few years saying 'oh we should've taught you something better but nevermind' or 'it's outdated now but we'll do it anyways' has finally got to everyone in our computing course. It probably sounds really moany or whatever but it's not really fair when we're paying for stuff they don't want to do

  • RG04/01/2010 at 15:56

I say the same - and that this is one of the few occasions where F1 could learn something major from football. A "fit and proper persons" test of sufficient intensity could have resolved this mess several months ago and spared the Hinwil staff and BMW board much worry and stress.

But the 'fit and proper persons' test allowed QADBAK to be owners of Notts County

  • Scott Woodwiss04/01/2010 at 15:56

No, im 99% sure foundations are self funded, but give the college a call.

But how am I going to do that? Would I not be able to get a student loan or bursary or something? Or is that what it means by self funded?

  • Alianora La Canta04/01/2010 at 15:57

do we know if wolf is joking about this?

    Arrived in Vienna on Air Niki. Funny enough Niki Lauda himself piloted the plane :-) {Comment #257}

Given that Niki used to do a fair bit of that on his old airline, I'd say Wolf is telling the truth. Paul Stoddart did the same with his airlines.

  • Jon Waldock04/01/2010 at 15:58

Nope, dosent sound moany at all, we've had similar problems this year already and it just gets so irritating. I'd say go and see the dean or vice chancellor

Foundation degrees are eligible for student loans. If you want to go down that path, tick whichever box relates to that this year. If there's more than one, get advice.

    But the 'fit and proper persons' test allowed QADBAK to be owners of Notts County {Comment #431}

It wasn't rigourous enough the first time, that is true. However it did find them out the second time, even if things had started unravelling before it concluded.

At the moment F1 has no protection whatsoever unless it's a completely new team or one that scored no points in the previous season. Even then, the FIA has the option of asking for evidence that it has the financial wherewithal to compete, or not, as it chooses. Apart from the new 2008 and 2010 teams, I don't know if any team owner has ever actually been subjected to it. I do know that no team owner has ever failed, which is a bit worrying given that the Phoenix project happened after the rule was instituted (the failures of the early- and mid-90s, I believe, preceded this clause).

Also, see the student advice centre that your university should have (NOT the university-run one, unless you need them to contact the dean or something), any tutors on your side and anyone else in the uni who you think may be able to support your assertions.

The first one should be able to advise you on how to go through the academic appeals process (which will almost certainly involve an appeal to a third party such as an ombudsman) and the latter two can help you win that appeal (along with your fellow students).

If you know that any of your fellow complainants are disabled, get them to ask the disability department for advice on complaining as well; some of them can be surprisingly helpful when it comes to advising on how to get through red tape due to the amount of practise they get.

  • Alex Andronov04/01/2010 at 16:39

yup. remove the inner ring of the shock mount (different coloured bit, with x2 grooves). it'll need a big screwdriver and it'll twist out.

Me neither - they can't afford to take it seriously because if they did, it would imply substantiation of those complaints. If they're substantiated, they are severe enough that they could lose their jobs. Presumably the dean and/or vice-chancellor like their jobs and would prefer not to leave them in the scandalous manner that a refund-worthy course would trigger.

A similar case at the university I studied at avoided this fate for the vice-chancellor partly because he was elected a couple of months before the judgement requiring the students be refunded was made and everyone agreed he couldn't possibly have been responsible. However I do not believe the head of department was so fortunate...

Ssshhh, it's not ready yet! :)

It's missing about 25% of the new stuff I am going to include, and IEx is giving me grief at the moment. I do appreciate the link and mention though. Cheers guys. :)

Keep an eye on it, and let Ollie know what you think.

Indeed and yes please, feedback is always useful. Although please bear in mind non-Firefox users may be seeing a few broken bits at the moment. Aaand, it ain't finished yet. I was encouraged to put my 'workings so far' up after I saw the bravery of Sidepodcast putting up their new super-dandy-fast homepage before it has been fully completed.

So now we have the technical questions...

Do I want my PAD set to -10db? do I want my Hi-Pass Filter in "roll off" or "flat". And finally do I want "Super cardioid", "Omni" or "Figure 8"?

    It's like a different language!

Steve Tarrant. He found me on Facebook because I took a pic of him at Arnage and posted it on the MWM group. I didn't know who he was when he tagged himself, so I asked him if he was the crazy dude who ran across the track with a wheel in hand.

His response was classic - 'No, because I've only got one leg!'

at this point it becomes clear why we tell people to get a blog. not a podcast :)

am heading out into the deep freeze. it's dark and scary, i expect a podcast by the time i return :)

Well it won't be up by the time you return... It will be released on the 28th of January. I might record something just for sidepodcast as a test though.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)04/01/2010 at 17:05

at least whoever it is has linked to your pic this time rather than rip it off ;)

Hehe :) It doesn't bother me at all, I was just wondering where on earth it was to be getting so much attention!

it should bother you. It's your idea and IP and someone else was taking the credit.

  • Lukeh04/01/2010 at 17:06

oh no, I mean this twitpic thing, that is just me being nosey! The facebook stuff really pee'd me off and am being very careful from now on regarding new stuff like that

  • Alex Andronov04/01/2010 at 17:06

Apparently by using certain settings I can create slap-back echo. Sounds like fun :)

What's gain? I have a Low/Med/High gain switch on my mic, and has no idea what its for

too hot and humid to say that ;-)

but I'm back from the Dakar and enjoying my last days of vacations...

  • Scott Woodwiss04/01/2010 at 17:51

I just made my first fruit smoothie with my new blender. It consists of blueberries, a banana, honey, yogurt and milk. And the result - not bad actually! A success me thinks :P

Good evening, just been to the opening of the Burj Dubai, In the process the renamed it after the ruler of Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi GP really sucked didnt it? :P (well for today at least)

Fireworks were epic, some of the best i have ever seen

The recipe is supposed to include flaxseeds and oats as well but I thought I'd try it without them first to see what it's like.

Despite what some people say, it doesn't take away any of the good stuff. Fruit is just as effective in liquid form!

  • guille230604/01/2010 at 17:55

    was it good?

sort of. we went to a ford and there was too much water and too much people. so the cars were going not so fast, and we had somebody in front from time to time. but all in all, it was a good and worthwhile trip

we were on the left side of the exit. there is a point when a car hit the border of the ford and the people help them to get out. they stop just in front of us (1 meter away?) to fix the car.

  • Alex Andronov04/01/2010 at 18:13

So... Should I do this? No idea... Why not.

So on http://gamboling.co.uk as you know I am planning to do a post every week day. On Thursdays I am going to do a section called archive. The archive will generally involve looking back at an old article or series of articles that people haven't seen and bringing them to life. But once a month they will be an audio version of one of the stories from The Book With The Missing First Page.

And to give you a taste, and get your feedback before actual go live here is the first one: A game of cat and mouse: http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/gamboling-a-game-of-cat-and-mouse-mp3

  • Alex Andronov04/01/2010 at 18:20

yeap. we ended up exhausted tough, it was 350km away and we had to drive all night to get there. but afterward we visited a lovely and small mountain town in the way back and it was a nice closing.

only a little. you probably have your gain turned up to much which is inducing hiss. back off the gain and project more.

I don't think so. The tone and speed remembers me a series of audio kid's stories I heard when I was a kid, and I find it very appropriated for this story in particular

a quick plug for the new sidepodsearch bar (needs a better name). if you use either safari or chrome on either windows or a mac, refresh your page.

in the top right the search bar will offer you a text hint. a drop down of the ten most recent searches and an "x" to delete an existing search.

the find button is probably obsolete as well, because hitting 'return' searches to save clicking.

    yell if you has issues.

    Curse those 'M' months!

    okay...

can you not get a .com? as far as i know they're only useful for uk companies targeting a local audience. it doesn't really say international motorsport, and nominet are a pain in the bum to work with.

For those who are going to be at the Teamworks karting event, you wouldn't mind if I brought my video camera and did some filming, would you? I'd like to put something together for my portfolio for the Film and Video course interview. I might also need some help from a couple of you to hold the camera and do some filming when I'm on track. :)

.com isnt avaliable at the moment, but will be soon, i was an idiot, it's not a long story, but one that shows me for the silly billy that i is. i can redirect it easily enough, but i cant have the /bits that are usually on hte end of the url.

you know, all you really need to have is someone to host the DNS, the IP can point anywhere, and they don't need to be hosted by the same place.

    . o O ( our foreigner filter is working! )

  • jpancoast04/01/2010 at 19:28

Actually, it's probably a registrar thing. The government controls who can be a registrar for it's top level domain (.uk in this case).

  • Jon Waldock04/01/2010 at 19:29

i think i'll just make it point towards the .net one that i have, and when .com becomes avaliable, buy that too

Can I ask who you've registered the co.uk with? 'Cos some UK companies offer .coms. When I had another site I used 123-reg.co.uk and they were pretty good. You can set up a .com with anyone, doesn't have to be US-based, as I understand it?

Quick question about 123-reg, they say I can have toata.co.uk for 2 years for 5.98, any idea if it means 5.98 per month of a sum £5.98 for 2 years?

i kinda agree with him though.

if f1 wants to be international, it has to stop thinking locally. and if he's going to influence change, now is when he has to do it.

if f1 wants to be international, it has to stop thinking locally. and if he's going to influence change, now is when he has to do it.

It is not really thinking locally it is just trying to find a way to make people take a break. The fact that it is in August is irrelevant. It is at the point of the season where people are getting tired and if Italy etc happened to close for November instead of August the break would still be around August.

I just find it odd that Windsor is complaining about something that doesn't happen for 8 months. Surely he has more immediate concerns and more important stuff to put out to the press.

it's august because that's when uk factories traditionally shut. f1 suppliers included. the calendar is then fitted around the shutdown.

Brawn built a beautiful car yet Renault produced a s**tebox (both aesthetically and not quick). Explain the maths. It'd better be as good as USF1's maths for a start.

I think the blog post Windsor wrote the other day said they would be using the tunnel for full-scale work only, they haven't bothered using it with scale-models. They are going to build the car and then put it in the tunnel. Seems odd to me but there you go.

That way they don't need to build models just full size cars. I would have thought they would be better learning using the models and then make the car rather than the first thing they ever make being a racing car.

I've seen plenty of people work with carbon fiber for rockets and they didn't wear clean room gear so I didn't think it was out of the ordinary, sounds like it might be. The processes may be different though (hobby rockets, not ones humans ride).

Although that's another good thing about the new Sidepodcast layout. The old homepage plus firefox loading up for the first time made for a slow combination. Now it's just a click of a finger and whala! :)

  • Pat W04/01/2010 at 20:22

That way they don't need to build models just full size cars. I would have thought they would be better learning using the models and then make the car rather than the first thing they ever make being a racing car.

Saves time I suppose. Perhaps they were a bit behind which is why they were quiet for so long. Skip the model making part to catch up.

  • jpancoast04/01/2010 at 20:22

Has been for months and months! Would be wrong to have it as anything else :)

    homepages are SO 90's! ;)

  • Alianora La Canta04/01/2010 at 20:26

    you are correct, except Qadbak passed this test. {Comment #476}

The first time the test wasn't rigourous enough. However, the Football Association does at least have some rudimentary defences up (however much improvement they may benefit from). F1 doesn't have any, unless you count the financial tests on completely new teams (which nobody has failed in 11 years of operation).

  • Lukeh04/01/2010 at 20:26

Tried that, unfortunately the admin (not me) decided to change the title when we moved servers. I've been so half-arsed about updating it that I've not changed it back yet.

    at this point it becomes clear why we tell people to get a blog. not a podcast :) {Comment #495}

I'm glad my set-up is relatively simple (OK, my results are rather rough, but there you go...)

Speaking of which, I'm considering taking my voice recorder down to the karting and recording some stuff on it. Do you have any advice for me (it will be the first time I haven't used a script to do a podcast)?

Get back to updating it when you are racing, should be good.

That's the thing. I'm in 2 leagues, yet I haven't updated it for one particular league's racing this season. I was a lil bit suspect at times. Ended up with 18 penalty points, but did win my last race out.

  • me04/01/2010 at 20:33

talk very loudly. the venue echoed quite a bit, so try to huddle together when recording to dampen the reverb.

i think startledbunny is podcasting the event too, isn't he?

Also be wary of the background music. Depending on where you are standing and how much you're moving it fades in and out and makes editing tricky.

    I would like to make podcasts of my blog posts someday... {Comment #502}

Have you considered Free NaturalReader? If I've understood the specifications correctly, the software should be able to produce something resembling a podcast without you even needing to say anything...

  • Turkey Machine04/01/2010 at 20:40

! Crashing into other people and that?

Yeah, rear ending people. The worst was being kicked out of a team despite outside circumstances dictating missing my braking point. I couldn't avoid hitting the guy. Had 2 bad rejoins, 2 first lap incidents. I won the first race this year but got penalised for a supposedly bad overtake on somebody who didn't know I was overtaking them. I'll blog about it!

  • Turkey Machine04/01/2010 at 20:41

    what do you race?

Grand Prix Legends, old F1 cars from the 1960s. 1965, 1966 and 1967 with the odd dabble in 1969 machinery. Fun times!

    Wow.

  • Turkey Machine04/01/2010 at 20:43

Is then being overwatched by F1 stewards?

No, but each race gets moderated reactively. I did win the last race outright when my team mate thought flipping his car over the kerbs at Brewery Bend onto the Jack Brabham Straight (Adelaide, 65 cars) was a good idea. :D

  • Alianora La Canta04/01/2010 at 20:44

    "Letting fatties roam the site is a direct threat to our business model and the very concept for which BeautifulPeople.com was founded." {Comment #785}

The person who said this implies that the business model of BeautifulPeople.com relies on the people there being beautiful.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

As long as the people are visible, they will be beautiful in some people's eyes.

If the person who said this can behold the "fatties", they must be visible and therefore they will be beautiful to some people.

Therefore, the "fatties" are compatible with the business model and the person who said this has committed a logical fallacy as well as being offensive. There may be an apology ahead for the offence, but please may I also have an apology for the stupidity and unbusinesslike attitude as well?

  • Alianora La Canta04/01/2010 at 21:46

You need to be healthy and have a passport/tickets and get yourself and your stuff to the airport. That is not Nick's job. You wo't be allowed to fly if your head can explode. Assuming of course airport security would regonise explosives.

O2 PAYG Internet is capped at £1 per day on the iPhone once you're out of the first 12 months. You can pay £10 per month instead.

Data Roaming (i.e. accessing cellular data in a different country) is £3 per MB in Europe or £6 per MB outside Europe.

I see no reason to accumulate more tangible stuff that's sitting on a shelf for 99.9% of it's life

I didn't say I used it! I downloaded Peter and the Wolf today :D

80's invention, I bought a great one about 10 years ago

Probably used twice in the last 2 years
