Ah yes, your friendly daily post from Sidepodcast. I've no idea what's going on in the F1 world at present, but thankfully Christine does. According to F1 Minute, newsworthy topics include Paul di Resta and Michael Schumacher. Let us begin then:
- Paul (or PdR if you prefer), says for him Formula One remains a possibility. I don't think there are many people in the world who would begrudge him a drive, but if McLaren don't give him a chance where else do you think he'd fit in, and who would he replace?
- Schumi has suggested that Hamilton may not have been able to bounce back if he'd suffered a second championship loss in Brazil, but are there any past drivers who've come closer, yet still managed to fight back to eventually take the crown?
- Off-topic and in the comments, Trig has asked for thoughts on the evolution of the biscuit, which must be a sidepodfirst. If anyone has any opinion on the matter, please let us know.
Just like always, the daily thread is the best place to discuss anything that doesn't belong anywhere else on the site. Do shout if you find any exciting F1 related news, because it's a bit thin on the ground at the moment.
Schumi has suggested that Hamilton may not have been able to bounce back if he’d suffered a second championship loss in Brazil, but are there any past drivers who’ve come closer, yet still managed to fight back to eventually take the crown?
Yes - Mansell lost out in 1986, 1987, and 1991 (all in heart-breaking fashion), but won in dominating style in 1992.
On that note - happy 40th birthday, Michael! Go, Schumi!
Come to think of it, he's the ONLY driver to have bounced back that well, and most of it would've been down to his sheer grit and determination. I don't think anyone else has managed it.
PdR would've been a good fit at Force India. If not, the soon-to-be-ex-Honda team can take him on, especially considering he'd probably be inexpensive.
I think Schumi should check the stats books before he opens that gaping hole of a mouth of his again, Prost lost the title in '83 by 2 points and by 1/2 point in '84 but he still went on to win 4 championships.
Prost's first title came in '85.
PdR is slightly confusing as names go. With Pedro de la Rosa.
Gosh as subjects for the daily post go, today's really do take the buscuit.
Well we've had Sidepodcake, so now we have the Sidepodcookie :)
Schumi is 40 today, that is the age when people can already be excused for some memory lapses :-)
Ah, but you see, Pedro de la Rosa is known as Pedalo round these parts. :)
Good point, but he had to switch teams before he could win a title.
Do you think Hamilton would have switched teams if he'd kept missing out on the title? I wonder how loyal he would have been if that had been the case.
Well, Anthony was looking around a few years back when he had arguments with Ron. So I think switching teams (even now) isn't out of the question.
But if he hadn't won a title, yeah, he might have begun looking in the direction of Maranello.
Watching Soccer AM this morning, I could swear Eddie Jordan was on it, being interviewed in the streets.
:)
i just did a scientific experiment in the name of sidepodresearch, and official evolution of the biscuit, goes something like this:
- open packet
- select biscuit
- eat biscuit
- seal packet
i shall be applying for government grants starting monday.
How about - repeat step 3? :D
cheers guys. i figured that might be the case.
i do hope one day we'll get to see how the man copes outside of mclaren.
i'll give it a go. may require more funding though.
Lewis will go to Ferrari if and only if McLaren becomes uncompetitive AND Alonso isn't in the other red car. Let's be realistic here.
Funding to eat? How lucky. :P
but his whole career with just one team? how boring :(
it's not just eating... it's research!
a-ha! i spy formula one news:
http://tinyurl.com/doningtonf1
gillett says they have planning permission in the bag, but council says they've had complaints from nearby villagers. next thursday is d-day.
Eddie is a big Coventry fan if that helps. He also used to have season tickets for Chelsea so that he could see a game if he was at his place in London.
Well, Jackie Stewart's done it. Jim Clark too. And they're not exactly boring. :)
Well, Donington Park the circuit was there long before they moved in. They should've known what was next door coming in.
Suuuure, it's research. Suuure. And how exactly will your research contribute to the society at large? :P
society is large because people eat biscuits? erm.
Erm not to be picky but Jenson Button gets a load of credit round here for loyalty but when there is a suggestion Lewis may be loyal he is boring.
People just like to pick on Lewis and whatever he does is seen as negative. I had a discussion elsewhere with people who said that unless he left McLaren they would never know if he was really any good. I pointed out that the people concerned all thought Jim Clark was the greatest driver ever and that he only ever drove for Lotus. Strangely the arguments about whether or not they could assess Lewis in only McLarens stopped that day.
it wasn't an f1 circuit then though? and there's heck of a lot of redevelopment planned. it's going to be a different animal entirely. it's one thing hosting a formula ford race no-one cares about, but another altogether for f1 races.
jenson's driven for williams and renault though? plus, he's a liability when it comes to contract negotiations. best if he stays put :)
Funding to buy more biscuits.
The problem is v2.0 of the report is more complicated because you need to find a logic step for how often to repeat th eat biscuit step.
and i agree sort of. however, that was then. we learn so much more about drivers as they move from team-to-team. just look at alonso in '07. we wouldn't have known about those personality traits had he stayed at renault.
he was a weaker man outside of his comfort zone. maybe lewis will be too?
true. also, now i'm full up :(
Jackie Stewart started with BRM because Tyrrell did not have an F1 team then. JYS drove for Tyrrell in F3 and Tyrrell did a deal with Matra for them to produce a chassis and engine for 1968 which was JYS's 4th season in F1.
I'll help.
Jenson's loyalty is different: he's been loyal with a team through VERY tough times. Other drivers would've packed up long ago, but Jenson's soldiered on, trying to improve the team.
Lewis' is a bit more convenient: he's always had a very fast car underneath him. How will he fare in a slower car? The same criticism was levelled at DC before he moved to RBR.
F1 was there in 1993, and Tom Wheatcroft never made a secret of his desire to host F1 on a regular basis there.
Oh yeah, forgot about that somehow. Thanks for the reminder.
That would mean that of all F1 World Champions (excluding Lewis), only Clark has driven for 1 team in his entire stay in F1.
Hang on, there's no funding for you yet! :P
yup, but since then the place has fallen to pieces. i understand that when people living near monza get irate about f1 they're clearly just stupid people. but donington isn't a formula circuit.
in this discussion i'm less interested in how he'd fair in a slow car. one day the mclaren could become a slow car again. really, i'm just curious how he'd cope in, say, a fast bmw team.
I am not so sure we learned a lot about Alonso. He was well known for blowing a fuse any team a team mate beat him so going in with a really competitive team mate was bound to push him over the edge. I think we probably learned more about Hamilton. imagine if he had gon into McLaren in 2007 with Pedalo or comeone as his team mate and won the championship as he would have been a clear number on by mid-season. It would have been hard to know how good he really was but because Alonsos was the benchmark it took away any doubt.
When Alonso was at Renault with Fisichella it was always assumed that Fisi had days whem he was really good and that was why he was faster sometimes. What we learned in 2007 is that the opposite is true. Some days Alonso is off the boil and therefore not the consistent performer people had believed. It also showed that the day's Fisi was right on it were in fact days Alonso was not so Fisi's reputation should take a hit as well.
Maybe some of the early champs like Farina were only with one team. I would guess Ascari only ever drove for Ferrari but I would need to check that.
it did though didn't it? does fisi have much of a reputation left now. even kovi beat the man, and look at him this year.
It makes me think of Piquet who had teams built around him and was shocked at the difference when thrown into Renault.
far be it from me to suggest he needs a team to 'rebuild' him :D
I think at some point he will move. Like most McLaren drivers he will get fed up with the number of sponsor days he has to do. I just hope he doesn't turn to the dark side. Lewis in a Ferrari would be wrong. Besides hopefully he has realised how bad Ferrari made kimi look this year by giving him a car wher the rear end was nailed to the ground and the front end had no grip. Lewis would have looked just as bad in that car.
Hmmm... Farina left Alfa for Ferrari after Alfa withdrew. Ascari left Ferrari for Lancia in 1955. After his death that year, Lancia withdrew and sold their cars to Ferrari.
well, to be fair to Fisi, he is beating Sutil. Not that that says much of anything.
*cough*Slim buys Honda*cough*
but... nah. even slim wouldn't build a team around him after this year.
Well, Alonso hated and despised Ferrari in 2006... and look where he could end up by 2010?
Lewis, you'll probably like the warmer climate of Maranello. :P
I was in Borders the other day and found a copy of Racecar Engineering. So I am going to take an hour and find out what all the fuss is about.
I forgot about Ascari going to Lancia.
which issue, out of interest?
do let christine know your thoughts :)
i hope so. even if he changes his mind and swiftly returns.
:)
a very good point. although, my impression was that he hated schumi, rather than the team?
which is why the recent schumacher contract reconsideration rumours for 2010 tie in so nicely with alonso heading to maranello.
Well, he did hate Schumi a bit, but they seemed to be good chaps after that weekend, so I think the anger was more at the team (who have always been accused of being cozy with the FIA) rather than the driver beneficiary.
And I think that single bit of news was why the Alonso rumors fired up again (along with Pino Allievi's scoop, of course).
ahh, yes. could have been that way around too.
question then. how would it affect massa if michael was no longer involved in the team. presumably now he's strong enough and confident enough to be his own man?
I'd think he's strong enough by now, yes. By then, Massa would've spent at least 4, maybe 5 seasons with Kimi as a teammate. That should be enough to make any guy toughen up.
Not that that would matter against Alonso, of course. As much as Massa has improved, Alonso would still obliterate him on pace.
PdR would’ve been a good fit at Force India. {Journeyer - 50 comments ago}
I am somewhat dubious about that, much as his experience would do good there. He would have been if he hadn't been so slow in testing. Besides, he said himself after that test that the Force Indias were almost dangerous - I can't see that sort of opinion going down well with the team staff, however true it may be in comparison with the McLaren. I think that at McLaren, as test and reserve driver, he's found his place. It's comfy enough for him and it must be said that in a one-off race situation, he is dependable.
but his whole career with just one team? how boring {me - 35 comments ago}
Mika Hakkinen spent most of his career with McLaren and I don't think he got bored. Neither did Jim Clark at Lotus or Gilles Villnueve at Ferrari. Fernando Alonso demonstrated in 2007 that sometimes switching teams for the sake of it is not a good idea.
Not many drivers stay loyal to one team for huge stretches/all of their careers, but those who do tend to get rewarded. And however dull spectators may find the lack of team changing, drivers rarely if ever find success dull.
I'll have to disagree on last phrase, drivers finding success dull. Many a driver change team, even after success there, for many reasons. Niki Lauda left Ferrari for Brabham because of the politics. Juan Manuel Fangio moved from one team to another to maintain success. Heck, Michael Schumacher left Benetton for Ferrari partly for money, and partly because he felt he had something to prove.
And loyalty doesn't usually pay in F1. Look at Gilles: he stayed loyal to Ferrari, but ended up getting swindled by Pironi and Italian politics. Look at Coulthard: he stayed at McLaren for 9 seasons, and won 0 titles. Look at Button: ever since committing to Honda after 2005, he's won all of 1 race.
F1 isn't about loyalty: it's about having the fastest, most reliable car beneath you for as long as possible. And unless the team is built around you (like Stewart's and Schumi's were), a team won't always have the fastest car. Logic then dictates that one will need to switch teams to achieve continued success.
When Alonso was at Renault with Fisichella it was always assumed that Fisi had days whem he was really good and that was why he was faster sometimes. What we learned in 2007 is that the opposite is true. Some days Alonso is off the boil and therefore not the consistent performer people had believed. It also showed that the day’s Fisi was right on it were in fact days Alonso was not so Fisi’s reputation should take a hit as well. {Steven Roy - 17 comments ago}
The problem with that theory was that the fact Fisi had good days was already demostrated at his previous teams. The big problem at Renault was that Fisi and Alonso had totally different ways of getting round corners. Fisi is a very smooth driver (therefore not inducing much of either over- or understeer) while Fernando is a very aggressive driver (but is aggressive by inducing understeer). Hamilton is aggressive by inducing oversteer.
In 2005, the first year when Fisi and Alonso were team-mates, the tyres were rock-hard because they had to last the whole race. In fact they were so hard that the Michelins were harder than necessary to last a full race distance (the US GP debacle was due to some other, still unknown, complicating factor that caused much higher wear on the sidewalls than elsewhere). So the primary benefit of smoothness (better tyre management) was lost. Also, the Renault was much more rear-weight-biased than the other cars, meaning it had a greater tendency to oversteer.
Neutralsteer + oversteer = Oversteer
Understeer + oversteer = Neutralsteer
Neutralsteer is faster than oversteer, if all else is equal. Therefore Alonso ended up faster.
The 2006 rubber was less hard as Michelin and Bridgestone philosophies converged in the tyre war. As this happened, the gap between Fisi and Alonso's performances decreased. However, the Renault was still oversteery, so a driver who induced understeer was still going to have the advantage (albeit a smaller one).
In 2007, the tyres were harder again. But since Alonso and new team-mate Hamilton were equally aggressive, this didn't matter much. Both of them were equally capable of nursing the tyres (or not as the case may be). It got expressed differently - Hamilton was more likely to puncture his tyres through overwerar while Alonso was more likely to explore a gravel trap due to exceeding the friction ellipse when the tyres took too much. However, Alonso lost the weight bias advantage he'd had at Renault. Now he was in a basically neutral-steering McLaren.
Understeer + Neutral = Understeer
Oversteer + Neutral = Oversteer
This meant that the basic driver/car balance was equal. It would be down to other factors, like compatibility with the team and ability to take disappointments. That was how Hamilton won the McLaren battle. If Fernando had used Fisi's cornering approach at McLaren, he'd probably have won the title. Granted, this would have merely meant that he'd taken a No. 1 rather than a No. 5 to Renault, but it would still have made him a triple champion and perhaps vindicated some of his behaviour.
However, this does prove three things:
1) Drivers can't switch driving styles very easily, even when it is plainly to their benefit (Hamilton should bear this in mind if he's tempted to go to Renault in the immediate post-Alonso era)
2) Sometimes loyalty really does pay off in F1.
3) Driver reputations can be based on things that say more about the cars they were in than the drivers themselves.

Franck's gonna be at Autosport:
Nicolas Minassian and Franck Montagny will also be available on the Peugeot Sport stand for interviews on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th.
I may be late to the karting due to stalking duties :)
Erm.. but Lewis' team hasn't produced an awful car over the last few seasons, and hasn't now left the sport...
... yeah, what journeyer said ;).
:-|
its not that simple im afraid, under + over can sometimes equal in 4 wheel drifts, but not usually.
plus you have to factor in power on/off oversteer/understeer
and then we get to the whole power on understeer, power off oversteer. thats always fun, anywho what i mean was....its never simple, ever
As a team manager, after one season of them, I've got a driver lined up because I am sure that one of them will be poor. I'm a very impatiant person. And I'm pretty sure by season 3, I'll have a completly different line-up.
Down to the managers choice as well
Weblog award badges are now available
http://2008.weblogawards.org/logos/get-your-finalist-logos/
cool, voting starts sometime on monday, so we'll get a post ready by then.
have you seen who we're up against btw? if we come anything but last in the podcast category it'll be a minor miracle. hopefully we'll fair slightly better in the community poll, but that's some massive competition right there.
For the podcast category:
EconTalk NPR Planet Money Derb Radio This American Life Pundit Review RadioShire Network NewsThis WEEK in TECH Harry Podcast Mugglecast Sidepodcast Issue Oriented
Personally, This WEEK in TECH is my pick to win here. I mean, if you guys can beat Leo Laporte, that would be AMAZING.
For the online community category:
Strobist Jennifer Marohasy eHarlequin.com Community My Opera Metafilter Community Weblog Twenty something bloggers Sidepodcast SVUfans.net Android Community Michael Jackson Fan Forum
Whoa... Michael Jackson? Darn. This is a pretty tricky category too: a lot of IT blogs abound - with good, sizeable communities. After all, unlike F1, they have more specialized interests.
Fixed the spacing. This is for the podcast category.
And for the online community.
Lastly:
Keith and Ollie for Best Sports Blog! Both their blogs have been nominated.http://2008.weblogawards.org/polls/best-sports-blog/
Sorry for the double comments. Spacing issues.
leo's live channel currently has 2,000 people watching, right this minute. looks like he can get up to 20,000 live viewers at any one time.
by comparison, we average about... 20 :)
my opera is a massive community built around a web browser. i even used to be part of that community. current membership: 1,960,418.
how the heck did we even get nominated alongside these guys??
And the eventual voting page
http://2008.weblogawards.org/polls/best-online-community/
svufans.net doesn't have an rss feed... we have to beat them ;)
Hard to believe, considering they've just announced Opera's market share stayed stagnant this month, even after IE dropped points to Chrome and Firefox.
the jackson fan forum has:
1,456 active users.
12,953 total members.
holy smokes.
true. they don't say how many of those are still active.
we should add a firefox button to the sidebar :D
That's right! Well, if anything, at least we're the only F1 site in either category. :D
:D
Yeah, the nominees were announced on the 29th.
As long as we beat those Inuits, I don't care.
hehe. that's very true. how many f1 fans do you know.
Here we go again!Maybe it's time to update those brackets? Any space is advertising space at this point. :D
ooh, did they get through? which site were they again?
http://jennifermarohasy.com/blog/
Capital idea
That would be Jennifer Marohasy.
Wow, good start on a slogan! We should think of catchy slogans. Like, 'Yes We Can!' or 'Change You Can Blog On'. I'm sure others can think of MUCH better ones. :D
Destroying the environment and the environmenatlists
In a reference to Formula 1
of all the ones on the list, i think that looks the most beatable.
david vs. goliath. we're be in the presence of some esteemed competition.
am gonna subscribe to all the other podcasts and give 'em a listen.
In refrence to be thrasing them in voting, not killing them
clarkson would be proud of that :D
Good idea, and then give em bad reviews on thier iTunes page :D
nooooo. we don't resort to f1 rejects tactics do we?
Fair point, maybe thats why they didn't get nominated ;)
i am especially going to enjoy listening to the harry potter one. having never read any of the books, or seen any of the films.
This is hilarious! Hahaha!
Goodness, NPR (National Public Radio) is there, for crying out loud! These are titans we're up against.
leo, npr and this american life are all huge, huge podcasts. massive.
not sure we need to go that far. I mean, is it possible there can be a better podcast than sidepodcast? answer - no. Also, let's not give anyone any reason to think we are a nasty community ;)
Anyone whos a bit interested in Dr Who, this afternoon at 5.35pm on BBC1 theres a Dr Who confidential special announcing the new doctor!!
agreed.
Don't. Overhyped, overrated piece of rubbish that relys on the fan base more than the quality of the books. And the films, I don't want to go there.
Yay!
And when we say massive, we mean MASSIVE.
well, while there can be no better F1 podcast than Sidepodcast, there can be other great podcasts in other categories too. it's up to the people to decide. :D
seconded.
Indubitdatly.
I made a mess of that spelling. Indubidly.
Damn that Homer Simpson.
I'll just say aye.
Damn. I want to watch FA Cup final, and who's on it.
Steve bloomin Ryder
:(
All he said was Hamilton may not have been able to bounce back if he lost the championship twice in such a fashion.
MAY not...
Well, he DOES need a job after F1 moved back to the Beeb and left him - again!
Hmm, Strobist is an excellent site/community, so you are up against some pretty stiff competition there...
I guess the point he was trying to make was that, well, it was a bit of 'stating the obvious' 2 months after the championship ended. Which Keith also mentioned at F1F.
we better get voting come monday then :D
haven't heard of it before. looks kind of cool though.
had no idea flickr groups could be so popular.
You have no idea... :) For the photogs, flickr is AMAZING.
the biggest one we're part of is:
http://www.flickr.com/groups/f1_racing/
nothing much happening there though.
are there any cool f1 flickr groups we should be a part of?
Did I say final, doh, 3rd round. Preston v Liverpool
Ha ha, Finalist Logos
put the tv on mute when he speaks/or is on screen?
My Dad's put it on 'The Who', game doesnt kick off til half past.
Cheers dad.
Not sure, to be honest. I'm not a photog! Hehe. Maybe Lou can help? :)
I've been reading it for a while now, the guy who runs it is hilarious and really knows his stuff.
nah sorry, i'm not a member of any groups on flickr.
this is gonna be a disaster :D
let's pretend we never heard of no awards. never speak such a thing again, ya hear?
Too late, mate. :P The nomination might attract some new people over in and of itself. :)
that's very true.
Is it... Could it be?
It is!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IEBSoQ8bG4
You're back on YouTube... at last!
how the heck did you find that already? i haven't seen it yet.
It's called a subscription. :D
Uploaded 16-ish minutes ago, apparently. :)
Can't get away with nothin'.
To summarize my reply to her video,
1. Yes.
2. Yes.
3. NO!
4. No.
5. I can't imagine a colorful movie ever teaming up with such a bland team. :P
I'll explain in detail once the others have seen it. :)
Of course not! This is the Internet, you can't get away with nothin'! :P
Oooh, I don't think I was old enough to remember you on youtube, but you had a big argument correct?
Love the Toyota, Kung Fu Panda bit ;)
so you have forgiven them then?
oh god.
Yup... it's about them using common video, which was also being used by MotorsTV. Long story...
Hahaha! I believe they'd have been more receptive to Bibendum, having run on his products before. :P
Good question!
:D
No, I remember them (or someone) telling me about it
i haven't, no. and inside track won't go back on there until they fix their cruddy copyright software. however, for diary entries they do pretty much everything we need. plus i think it's all the wiki supports.
ahhh, i see. :D well it's nice to see sidepodcast diaries back.
I'm sure people in the comments will always remind you to do another one if you forget, Christine ;)
It's not about forgetting, it's about having a) time and b) something to say.
Not sure how YouTube can fix it though. The only way I see this getting resolved is if the company that creates those common clips declares it to be non-copyrighted.
the comments can provide one the above.
exactly :) even if it's something about what you have been up to on the site, or what we have been discussing in the comments that week, you never know it may help the community to grow ;)
easily actually. exactly the same way dailymotion does it and they do it really, really well. it's hard to explain, but we have no trouble with them and they're a nice bunch of people you can actually speak to.
youtube are trying so hard to kiss hollywood's backside (to compete with hulu), they instigated a bunch of very stupid processes that do the opposite of what was intended.
just like the fia in fact :)
Hmm, waffling happens.
Which leads me to shamelessly plug a certain blog that I may have created.
http://thef1waffler.blogspot.com/
The only problem is I don't have anything to waffle about...
nice one r.g. i tried commenting, but nothing happens?
Too bad Dailymotion is nowhere near as popular as YouTube is... :(
To be fair to them, if they don't kiss Hollywood's ass, they get sued to bits, which they can ill-afford. And this is a business, after all.
same happened to me
My fault, hopefully should work
i blame google.
we can partially blame google, but not fully. had youtube stayed independent, it might've still gotten sued anyway. google's purchase just sped up the process (since google's money enticed the studios), but the studios suing was inevitable, since they didn't know how to react to this new threat.
had they sued, youtube would probably end up getting shut down ala Napster. and that would be a sad thing to see.
It won't let me comment RG :(
Okay, me thinking it may be skin related.
if that's true, why aren't DM getting sued? my guess is because they have a copyright infrigement prevention policy that actually works, and is manned by sensible people who know what they're doing.
possibly, but other video sharing sites are doing just fine. vimeo is great (mostly), blip.tv are wonderful too.
ahh, welcome to the world of blogging r.g.
Cheers
my guess is because they're nowhere near as famous as YouTube. Even if YouTube had that prevention policy, since more people use it, more people will find a way past it. They'll get sued anyway. And again, there's that money factor. DM doesn't have anywhere near the money Google-YouTube has.
which leads me back to blaming google :)
I didn't say they're NOT to blame. I just said partially. :D
Bulk of the blame lies with Hollywood, the way I see it. Had they just been more sensible in handling the dawn of digital media, they wouldn't be in this mess they're in right now.
R.g starting a blog on Blogspot has inspired me to start one up again too. My last one on Wordpress got to the point where it got rather confusing working out how to operate it!
Any ideas on a name for my new blog? I'm kinda stuck. :P
on that we're in 110% agreement.
And on that bombshell, I'm off to bed. See you in the (early) morning, guys.
night sir.
Night Journeyer
Bye bye :)
Reet. Comments are sorted, but on a pop-up box.
Night journeyer
G'night Mr C, Lou, Scott. :D
G'night R.G. Good luck on yer new blog. :)
Left a comment on your blog R.G ;)
If I may repeat, can anyone help with a name for my new blog on Blogspot? :)
Whats it about, F1 in general?
Yeah F1 and other motorsports, plus BATracer/RLB and some other stuff. :P
what was wrong with the one you had?
Wordpress seemed to get too complicated for my liking and I was never really able to place stuff where I wanted it.
The Spoiler? Erm, what was your old one and trade it too their?
My old one was "Formula 1 from a 17-year-old's P.O.V" but I fancy something shorter and catchier :P
thewissmeister.blogspot.com
I'll think about it
:D lol
Am I the only person so not interested in Doctor Who since Tom Baker handed over?
umm, i'm not interested since billie left.
...
I'm not saying anything
I hope Christine doesn't read that.
:D
some formula one / karting news:
"Kubica has returned to his roots by going into partnership with the Italian company Birel formed by the Sala family, for which he raced in the European and World Championships in 2000, taking a management role in the team competing in major international karting events."
http://www.f1sa.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=9507&Itemid=219
I had to tell him how to spell it :)
HAHA! Priceless :D
And we are all saved.
Just to let people know you can now sign up for fantasy racers ready for the new season!!!
Cool, thanks for the info Alex
Do we have to resign into the sidepodcast private league again?
If I have my teamname as GO TEAM RETARD!, would that be acceptable to read out on the show? :P
:D
My guess, no.
My team looks awfully like I'm cheating, 'Chucking The Rule Book Out'. Remember I'm Gaulty on this.
Yeah, kinda thought so. :P
Erm, I think I kinda created the private league by accident, whoops.
*slow sarcastic clapping*
I think I've just thought up of the greatest team name, one that symbolises everything Sidepodcast stands for....
Dumbo-Flugel'd Cupcake Pandas
Ooh brilliant! Will do that asap, thanks Alex :)
You may be banned under the new aero regs :D
Kung Fu Honey Badgers?
That's a good one. Feel free to come up with challenging names for us to say but even we have boundaries.
So, are we going with this one or will there be an official team?
Either way we need League number & password at some point
I'm Sunday Singing Clappers
I can just imagine hearing Mr C collapse laughing when that's read out :D
If you want it
league numero is 5
password is 'franck'
since that was it last year.
Ooh, I can't decide what name to go for!
I got another one - Megablastic Space Marmots
I might combine all 3 and go with Dumbo-Flugel'd Kung Fu Marmots.
Surely a winner
Then it's settled - Dumbo-Flugel'd Kung Fu Marmots will race to victory this season!
Well, they've given us more of a budget for a start - 5m more than last season. Might make things a bit easier.
wait a sec. we wanted to set this one up, save all the kerfuffle we had this year. give two if that's cool.
K, It was by accident though. I thought it was to resign back into the league.
hehe. no worries.
you did good, just was so much hassle at the end of last year that we're going to donate to the site and stuff. we weren't ready to go live yet.
give us 10 mins :)
I also think I've found the name for my new blog - The Daily Dumbo-Flugel. Thoughts? I put it as one in a list.
Works well Scotty, makes an excuse for Christine to say it a bit more ;)
Or what about The Daily Downforce? More F1/motorsport related.
I know, it's horrible! I really want to hear some news about Honda, it's driving me insane.. after all these years and the horrible announcement back in december, and how much of a fan of the team, I really want to see the outfit back even if it'll be under a new guise. It's the new year, Brawn, tell your fans some more info! Even just a weenie ickle bit!
I was gonna say: it's unadvisable to use Daily in the title unless that is what it will be (speaking from experience).
Downforce is great, though. I doubt many people would know what Dumbo-Flugel was. Only proper fans ;)
OK I think I'll stick with downforce but I need something to go with it.
agreed. :)
what are you planning to cover in your blog Scott? just general f1 news, or are you gonna focus on a team or driver?
He said F1/other motorsport and BATracer related stuff
Downforce Discussion
The Downforce Digest
Downforce Discourse
Downforce Dialogue
The Downforce Report
Just some off the top of my head. Feel free to discard them.
ah right so general stuff. ok :) will have a think :)
Downforce Dabble
DownforceIndia?
More suggestions based of Mrs C
What about Zero Downforce?
Genius.
Thats alright
BrakeBiased?
The First Corner?
Wall of Champions?
St. Devoite?
How about Sidecogpast? or SideCodPast? or even CideSodPast?
http://zerodownforce.blogspot.com/
Check me out, I've done an introductory post.
How do I create sections for my blog posts to go in, if anyone knows?
loving these new f1 blogs. everyone needs a blog, keep it up guys.
Sidepodspace news:
NASA is celebrating 5 years of the Mars Rovers mission. Originally intended to work for 90 days, these robotic explorers are still working.
I've found a link to a blog written by one of the rover drivers (see - sort of on-topic :)). He intends to post entries over the next few days covering the first days of the mission.

also, don't forget must comment monday :)
you also need to open up your comments i think. i can't write one without signing in.
Done :)
It was the one with J dampers in it. I consider myself to be reasonably competent technically at least in theory if not practically. However I don't think I learned anything from reading some of the articles in the magazine. Not because I knew it all but because they assume a level of knowledge i don't have. They on more than one occasion refered to articles in previous issues and used that info as the basis of the maths. Well I hadn't seen the previous issue so I struggled to make much sense of it.
I get the impression from the bits I read that it is not aimed at enthusiastic fans but at people working in junior formulae with an interest in working at a higher level. I will read the rest of it later but based on what I have read so far I see no reason ever to buy another copy.
oh.
you're probably right about the target audience, but i'm not that technical and while most non-f1 articles lose me quickly, i can usually find my way around the interesting ones.
not sure i've read the j-damper issue, but will look it up this week.
Gilles was going to McLaren for 1983 and had said that he wanted to set up his own team which may have been what encouraged Jacques to do the BAR deal and to stick at it so long.
That is a good point because at that time Renault had a ridiculously rear heavy car.
The big question is how did we end up with more nominations than anyone else?
i've no idea.
i said our '09 season couldn't be better than our '08 one, but heck it's starting off pretty darn well isn't it?
but… nah. even slim wouldn’t build a team around him after this year. {Journeyer - 203 comments ago}
That's true. He'd build it round his other golden boy, Bruno Senna, as soon as he could prise him away from the ex-Honda team.
F1 isn’t about loyalty: it’s about having the fastest, most reliable car beneath you for as long as possible. {Journeyer - 191 comments ago}
You have a good point there.
its not that simple im afraid, under + over can sometimes equal in 4 wheel drifts, but not usually.
plus you have to factor in power on/off oversteer/understeer
and then we get to the whole power on understeer, power off oversteer. thats always fun, anywho what i mean was….its never simple, ever {Jon Waldock - 188 comments ago}
I admit it was a simplification (partly because my comment was long enough already and partly because I was attempting to convey a general concept with the help of the handwavium phrase "if all else is equal"), but a certain amount of understeer counteracted by the same amount of the same category of oversteer will equal neutralsteer if all other factors are removed. And additional complicating factors aside, the key to Alonso mastering the Renault and Fisi not was that the Renault car was biased towards oversteer and Alonso's natural approach counteracted that a lot more than Fisi's.
Did I say final, doh, 3rd round. Preston v Liverpool {R.G.}
The FA Cup is a bit of a sore point for me. Chesterfield FC (my home team) have, in my opinion, made a complete embarrassment of themselves in how they went through the second round. Sure, Drylesden (or however it's spelt) fielded a player they shouldn't have done. But that was on the fourth attempt at the match. If Chesterfield had made sure it was possible to see through the fog the first time or won the second time, they wouldn't have had to resort to a courtroom to attain the pleasure of being thrashed in the next round. Whatever happened to losing gracefully? :(
The fact of the matter is Droylsden played a player who should not have been playing. And the fact he scored both goals.
But I do feel it was a harsh decision since he played for all the cancelled matches
What do you guys think of the new banner on my blog? ;)
The fact of the matter is Droylsden played a player who should not have been playing. And the fact he scored both goals. {R.G. - 2 comments ago}
This is true. It is also true that Chesterfield could easily have avoided playing the match where the player was fielded when banned by either winning the second match or making sure their floodlights were up to the job in the first match.
If the appeal had followed the usual two-match (or one-match) round, it wouldn't feel so bad. But hacking away at a result like this is just not on - especially when Droylsden is non-League and Chesterfield is the second division from the bottom of the FA League.
I think an expulsion of a team is indeed incredibly harsh. A fine or no win bonuses from the FA I think will have been sufficent
Honda rumour ahoy!
Honda already sold. Announcement this week.
Take with a pinch of salt... but the person who posted this is supposedly a 'trusted source' and unveiled Honda's '08 livery weeks before anybody else saw it, amongst over things.
:o
Let's just hope it's true... *fingers crossed*
Ooooh. And I was just about to go to bed.
Actually, I still am. Night all.
Goodnight!
i remember that livery story. excellent news. great find dank.
catch ya tomorrow r.g.
im all excited now about this honda news. After a really rough day in work and finding my wallet missing £5 and in the corner of the cloakroom stashed away, this is a very nice change of events if hopefully true :)
blimey. nice colleagues.
i refuse to believe it till it's confirmed. i can't go through hope etc again... Come on Honda confirm something soon so i don't go out of my mind!
its a shame because half of the guys are amazing people the other half... not so much. but ehh, never mind about that. gonan get that sorted out.
possible F1 news! ahh!
Gavin's back from his skiiing holiday :D
Hey Guys! Am back. How's everyone? :)
cool :) , how do you know?
The magic of Facebook ;) I'm chatting to him on it right now :P He says skiing was fantastic :P
Hey Dom, good to see ya back :)
Dom! hey! :D i'm good. How was your holiday? fancy joining our BATracer game?
Goddamn this comment moderation! :/
Haha. That's a bit spooky.
Don't tell me he's been in Austria too... :)
Ooh yes, I was going to ask you about that Dom.
Looks like i've got plenty of comments to catch up on... :)
Good news - Gavin said he'd join our BATracer game! :D
start with batracer :)
were you on holiday for the whole Carlos Slim buys Honda rumour/lie? (my days just blend into one atm)
If Dom joins, we'd only need one more at least to start since it looks like Toyota is to be abandoned :P
Gavin has told me he will be going to Toro Rosso alongside Al. :)
didn't alex say he was back tomorrow?
Good thanks. Feels like i've been away for a lot longer then a 10ish days. BATracer sounds good. Should probably work my way through what looks like a massive sidepodweek first. Christmas day is a nice place to start. :)
Hopefully I will manage to convince my new friend Myyrylainen to be my team-mate, so that would be the "one more". I'm disappointed that putting it on my blog doesn't seem to have increased take-up any.
all of them? wow, you are a hero.
we could offer a potted history?
Things can get very confusing otherwise. Feel free to ignore me if i start commenting on otherwise forgotten posts.
Blimey, there is a lot...
If he is, I'd tell him to take whichever team needs to be completed since it might take up more time to fill it up.
That said, if Alianora's friend is going to join and Alex takes one toyota seat that only leaves one more spot left.
I may start live commenting the week now...
Yay! Christmas message!
yay! so how many spaces are there to fill now, Scott? 2?
:D good luck with reading all the comments :)
Good morning!
He may not need to prise him away from the team; he might decide to just buy the team wholesale!
As for the buyout news, the forum thread says to expect something between tuesday to thursday.
I know EXACTLY how you feel. That ends today though; work starts on Monday!
And - welcome back, Dom!
Hey Journeyer. :)
Erm... i remember his name being mentioned...
I presume not much else has happened in the F1 world this week?
The biggest bit of news was when Rubens became the next Doctor in Dr Who!*
*in my little fantasy world
Hahaha! Mind you, he MAY end up needing a new job! :P
Not sure how to reply to that... :P
*plugs ears*
lalalalalala! I cant hear youuuu!
Paskis in the Megamix.
:o :o
Looks like I'm requried to make some predictions... :)
Yeah I guess so. Depends where Dom's going.
Err...
I may need some kind of link or something...

Gavin's got the second seat at Toro Rosso and Alianora's trying to get her friend to join her at Force India, so I would recommend taking the Williams alongside Dan Brunell. Up to of course :)
Sounds good.
Might need an account first though. :P
No problem. Free to join so go right ahead :)
And remember to read the guide I've put up on the Wiki. :)
again?? we're taking it extra seriously this year though.
also nice to see vampire in the league too :)
Ahem, I was talking to Dom there. ;)
Ooh, Gavin took the same two traits and me and Steven. Wonder if he'll be the Vettel of that team ;)
If that can't get me playing this game properly then nothing will... :P
Wow - can't believe we haven't started BATracer yet. I honestly thought the SPC game would fill up within minutes. If you're thinking about it but not sure, just dive in, you'll love it!
I wonder what the Sidepodcookie would be? I guess it'd be baked for 300km at 19,000 rpm, and would almost certainly contain traces of nuts. :)
it's interesting to watch how quickly the fantasyracers league has filled up by comparison. there seems to be some reticence to joining batracer, and i can sort of understand why.
i agree though, diving in is the only option.
After joining Fantasy Racers and realising how gosh darn simple it is, I totally understand.
If anyone is put off by the terrible ugliness on either side of the BATracer page (I know I was), it's worth creating a custom stylesheet for the site (I use the 'Stylish' add-on in Firefox), and add this code:
td[bgcolor="#008837"], td[bgcolor="#ee0000"]{
display: none;
}
tip of the week to you sir :)
i wouldn't normally condone the ripping of adverts completely from a small website, because in our case, without them paying at least part of our hosting costs we wouldn't be able to do this.
batracer's are so bloomin' off-putting though, i'm gonna make an exception... damn it looks like a normal website afterwards :)
Not working for me
try number 6 with the same password. i confused everybody for no good reason. sowwy.
Very helpful. Thanks a lot. :)
