It's Halloween!! Well, it will be at this time tonight. Are you going to any parties? Dressing up? Or simply eating a lot of sweets? I know what sounds good to me. I carved a pumpkin once and it was gross. Anyway, here are some F1 things to discuss:

  • Williams confirmed they would be running Cosworth engines yesterday, which is something we had suspected for a long time. On the one hand, we were surprised as Mr Williams has said previously that Cosworth aren't his favourites, but on the other hand, he seems to know what he's doing. So, we'll wait and see.
  • Did anyone else see the free practice sessions that I saw yesterday? The track in Abu Dhabi is interesting and looks good under lights, but there wasn't much to talk about on track, and none of the drivers seemed that perplexed despite being faced with a brand new circuit. I'm hoping today will offer a little bit more.
  • Autosport reports that Bruno Senna has as good as signed a deal with Campos META (don't forget the META) which means he has a seat for next year. He was so often rumoured with Honda that their demise can't have done his chances any good. However, this new development means some more fresh blood into the season in 2010.

That'll do it for now. We'll be back with live commenting threads and podcasts throughout the day (am running slightly late on the FP Digest), and we look forward to seeing you there. I'll see you in the comments.

    is your life complete now?

We'll not be answering the door. considering the locale, it's best. And I'll be going out for the pizzas so we don't confuse food with kids in costumes with eggs.

    a request from @faketrulli:

Hello @sidepodcast, as you love me so much, can you help me make #Sutilsfault a trending topic? :)

    you know you want to!

more complete, but no. and i am okay with that. completing my life now would make the rest a bit of a downward spiral.

  • Pat W31/10/2009 at 01:47

My dad and stepmum have bought these buckets of sweets which they will dip into (they have a lot of kids nearby, including my sister). I was tempted to get one all for myself :-)

I have no idea if I'll get visitors.. I hope not, I don't like being pestered...

  • Amy31/10/2009 at 02:05

Halloween hmm. I had better buy some lollies for all those kids that manage to get through our swipe card door and then a locked gate to my front door ;)

  • Steven Roy31/10/2009 at 02:05

    a request from @faketrulli:

I see an interesting development that I never considered before on the list faketrulli is following. Fake dead F1 drivers. As well as 1970 world champion Jochen Rindt he is also following the Monza Gorrilla Vittorio Brambilla.

they have to be nice lollies because when absolutely no one makes it to my front door I will have the job of eating them.

you can find some nice tasting lollies at those cheap shops but the danger is always how you feel after eating the whole bag in a bored binge.

how far away is the locked gate from your door? because the swipe card is do-able

  • Amy31/10/2009 at 02:21

how far away is the locked gate from your door? because the swipe card is do-able

the swipe card is the main entrance to my complex, the locked gate is about 2 metres from the front door at the end of my courtyard :D

i'd skip the lollies then and get something in you like. it'll be a quiet night :)

  • Pat W31/10/2009 at 02:23

I'm going to have to rethink my furniture arrangement. I've spent most of the evening in front of the computer, craning my neck around 160degrees at the TV watching free practice - not comfortable.

Previously I had the TV a short glance away but the layout here doesn't help.

  • Amy31/10/2009 at 02:24

maybe the KFC I didn't have last night. I really need to hurry up and leave the house, I said I was going 2 hours ago :D

the temperature is still climbing though. Heat like this makes me feel that the Grand Prix isn't too far away because my first experience of Melbourne over 30 was during Grand Prix time :D

    off to bed too night

I was thinking you were up early! My journey was topped off by hearing a lady complain that F1 will ruin her wedding. If you are silly enough to be in Melbourne that weekend and be doing something other than going to the race you deserve to have your wedding ruined ;)

i have noticed that all the roads in our local district have all been recently resurfaced. Its obvious what this means. Blatently gonna be hosting the british gp next year. Bagsy rubens accommodation :p

  • Stuart C31/10/2009 at 07:29

    Morning all.

What a hatefully early start for a Saturday! Rose to answer the call of nature and was then bullied into further activity by a hungry cat.

Off to Bath today for Mrs C's birthday treat, so I'll miss quali. Boo!

Still, while I'm up and about, may as well do something useful (like checking out blogging software/facilities/etc).

  • Stuart C31/10/2009 at 07:36

    Its obvious what this means.

And have you seen a fuzzy-haired German hanging around with some blueprints?

  • Alex Andronov31/10/2009 at 07:37

Absolutely. The key thing, as I am sure you know, is to pick the name.

Maybe you won't get a GP, but perhaps you could use this opportunity to get a road renamed in Barrichello's honour. Then a "Rubens Drive" would be guaranteed every year ;)

  • Lukeh31/10/2009 at 07:38

And have you seen a fuzzy-haired German hanging around with some blueprints?

i think so. Although we have a very hilly landscape so im sure the gradient changes are blowing this strangers mind.

  • Stuart C31/10/2009 at 08:44

Obviously Stuart isn’t going to rest until he’s got his blog launched, which is good.

I got sidetracked by working out this quarter's VAT return...

Still not sure about a theme for the blog. It could, of course, be totally F1-based, and if I go to a few races it might even be useful for a wider audience. Not that it will help turn the accreditation pumpkin back into a carriage, though.

  • Stuart C31/10/2009 at 09:02

Surely Joe and James get away with it though?

They get their accreditation through traditional routes (James via the FT); the process for new media is still in its early stages, although the proprietor of Manipe F1 was at Valencia and Monza. I talked to the FIA rep while I was at the Italian GP and the upshot was that while my work meets the quality criteria, it needs to appear in more outlets that meet the quality/circulation criteria.

    oh no!

that hadn't occurred to me at all.

On that note - apologies in advance because my post will be late tonight - I have people coming over for dinner...

  • Amy31/10/2009 at 14:23

Australian hosts just said they know lots of V8 supercar drivers will be watching the Abu Dhabi race because their championship is going there next year. That seems rather random.

  • Journeyer31/10/2009 at 14:23

    2010 rules suck! :(

I actually think they rock. I mean, low-fuel quali has to be the best bit of all. :D

some of the best races of all time were with no refuelling. it'll be interesting to see drivers not just sprint to each and every pitstop, and manage the race as a whole. we shall see how it goes next season.

I must say, after transcribing lots of Joe, that Mr C is an expert in asking questions by making a statement rather than actually asking a question.

    @Mr.C.

In your last chat with Joe he mentioned that he saw Ross Brawn in the US, right?

Combine that with the story about the Mobil sponsorship, and I think that Ross Brawn was in the US to go to Exxon-Mobile to talk about this deal.

So expect next year to see Mobil1 on the Brawn.

  • me31/10/2009 at 14:46

Morning from Canada everyone. First is there anyone else out who would love to see Hamilton crash in the first lap in the hopes that Jonathan Legard (I believe that's the commentator beside Brundle) would say either nothing about Hamilton or nothing at all for the rest of the race (They amount to the same thing)...

Tonight I am going to a Hallowe'en party. Well it is actually a house-warming party but heck, dress-up if you want to. I am going as villian in the movie "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

Hoping to be in decent shape to watch the Grand Prix tomorrow. Maybe I will be happy enough to enjoy Legards commentary ?

So he flew Brazil -> Houston -> Chicago -> London.

  • Rich31/10/2009 at 14:51

The German press reported something like this as well.

It is clear that Mercedes is shifting support and possibly even sponsors across to Brawn. I doubt for next year, but the the year after it will be Mercedes F1 or Mercedes Brawn.

And for example, Fangio most famous Nurbergring win was only possible to refuelling because it was only the botched pit stop that got him into being in that mess of being half a lap down at the old Nurbergring. How he won from 4 minutes back is one of F1's legenadary drives.

But please tell me, with all engines more or less having the same output, how are you expected to catch up to someone on the track? Not from any differences of weight. racing should not be sorely about how well the tyres wears that seems to be me to prevent overtaking as you are too concerned to save your tyres instead to try a last of the heard brakers moves which seems to be the only way to make a pass on the track under the new rules.

Or better still. Imagine two teammates leading the race and they take themseves out by running out of fuel? from 18 certain points to 0. or does that actually become a tactic? Force the guy in front to run out of fuel? What an awesome way to make a pass.

As is Senna's drive in Donington 1993, Mansell's drive in Hungary 1989, Villeneuve's drive in Jarama 1981, Watson's drive in Long Beach 1982... all of these drives without refuelling in sight.

a car's handling changes as the weight goes down. some cars will handle this better than others.

i don't expect cars to run out of fuel in this age of supercomputers calculating how much fuel is needed. i remember only 1 example of a car running out of fuel - massa at spain this year, and that was due to a miscalculation.

I know it was not an error or miscalculation but a problem with the rig - it showed how fine they run - he could not complete even half a lap to get back to the pits.

but that's the thing - we wouldn't have had that problem if the fuel for the entire race was already in the tank to start with.

  • Kathi31/10/2009 at 15:23

i block keith, but keith is included on 5live's "motorsport" list which i now follow, and i do see his tweets... even though i'd rather not.

No I would like to know if Keith can see yours :)

  • me31/10/2009 at 15:25

No I would like to know if Keith can see yours :)

    i see.

that doesn't bother me. i don't care what keith has to say, but i'm not bothered if he is interested in what i have to say. just so long as he can't reply to me i'm happy.

  • Rich31/10/2009 at 15:27

but that's the thing - we wouldn't have had that problem if the fuel for the entire race was already in the tank to start with.

I am happy that refuelling is banned - I think it wil test drivers a little more and it should suit my two drivers (Nick and Timo) rather well assuming they good competitive seats which is a rather big IF. I still think Macca should go for Heidfeld if they decide to get rid of Kovy.

  • me31/10/2009 at 15:28

No I would like to know if Keith can see yours :)

also worth pointing out anyone can see my tweets if they are blocked or even logged out.

blocking makes no odds unless you protect your tweets, and if you're coing to do that, i'm not sure i see the point of tweeting?

  • Pat W31/10/2009 at 15:30

Greg Moore died ten years ago today. Meesh has posted some tributes. Some have been removed by on a TOS violation. You should watch the bottom two, but be careful with the 3rd from last because it contains the crash and you may not want to see it.

A blocked person can only see your feed when they are logged out, no? But if they would be able to see your tweets through someone's list the whole blocking feature as it is now doesn't make much sense anymore. They need a new one that allows you to block other people tweets even though you follow a list they are on.

I need help installing skype on mint - i did it on the big machine but the netbook can't download the package and won't install off the website #forgavin

Is not Rich but has a suggestion anyway: Have you tried the medibuntu repository. Add it and then you should have skype in your software control centre thing and you can install it from there. Skype is temperamental on linux though.

I managed to install it using the synaptic package manager, but my internal mic does not work. But the camera does and I think the earphone jack does too....

I take it this is with the netbook? I think you said it was an Aspire One - so your best starting point is

Have you tried the oss version like Rich suggested (if you do this you might have problems if have another audio sources while calling. Like for example spc live stream. Or I did this, which removes pulseaudio.

But before you do that try in you sound preferences (right click the little loudspeaker) if you can change the input source and if that helps.

  • Rich31/10/2009 at 16:06

    #forgavin

Internal mics are a known "issue" with Ubuntu - that is why if I advise a person wanting to get a notebook and to use Linux then Asus EEE PC with Easy Peasy is really the answer - its quite brilliant as everything works out of the box so to speak. Sadly this does not help you currently.

the new Ubuntu release solved some of my audio issues, so when the new mint come out next month(?) your problems might disappear as well.

Can you upgrade if you boot off a flash disk or do you have to start afresh?

  • Rich31/10/2009 at 16:14

I like the idea of Mint on the netbook too ;)

Ubuntu remix is very good - its just unfortunate that I have to use KDE due to policy (which admittedly I made) but that is linked to getting funding and to exploit a complex chain of opportunity within the field of web mapping. KDE is quite likely the future for desktops which is why Windows 7 copied so much of it and well I sort of have to go that way. I hate our web access I need a Gentoo Live DVD to then use a script that prepares a netbook remix - and well it just not coming down fast enough - even by Monday morning it would have be downloaded. Wish I could emigrate to Finland!

  • Kathi31/10/2009 at 16:14

Can you upgrade if you boot off a flash disk or do you have to start afresh?

Erm, if you have enough space on your computer where mint can store the files for a while you should be able to upgrade. But I would suggest to start fresh and copy&paste your .skype folder and similar things.

One of my tasks is to actually get staff and students to use free software - this to align with government policy. Purchasing software when your exchange rate is as bad as that in SA simply is an expensive exercise. I love Apple products and OSX but you cannot justify the expense of double to treble what can be built with hardware not pre-installed with Windows and Linux. The standard LinuxMint is very good (arguably better than standard Ubuntu) but I would avoid the KDE version. If you need better performance you could move to the XFCE Mint.

  • Kathi31/10/2009 at 16:27

I was not impressed with Moblin but that wa sbecuase I could not get Open Office to install and gave up.

Too date for me the best Linux is Pardus KDE but there is no live CD, then it is LinuxMint, Ubuntu Netbook Remix/Easy Peasy and CrunchBang/Chruncheee depending on your own style from lots of eyecandy to minimalist.

  • me31/10/2009 at 16:27

Hows things holding up in sidepodalnd? what do you think of the track?

  • me31/10/2009 at 17:29

Hows things holding up in sidepodalnd? what do you think of the track?

    tis all good here.

good things about the track: i think organisers have done everything they possibly can do. it's good to see some elevation changes, not much but more than i expected.

bad things about the track: really confused by the two pit exits and the dual start markers, allowing the general public to hang over balconies above the track is lunacy.

  • RG31/10/2009 at 17:31

Hows things holding up in sidepodalnd?

    meh.

what do you think of the track?

Seen about eight minutes of the track, in that time already got confused with the two pitlanes.

The support pit? I guess it is strange, but its practical...

Where were they hanging over balconies? i did a bit of that over the pitlane yesterday... you couldnt take drinks to the edge though... they get cross...

Suzuka and Sepang have support pits, many places do, but none are so pronounced as here. Monaco has the balconies etc. I've never seen a bridge so open though, over a race track..

While your there can you find out what they call what we call yogurt? I'm guessing they don't call greek yogurt "greek yogurt", they must call that "yogurt". So what do they call what we call "yogurt"?

I am really hoping you try and get an answer to this question when it suddenly re-occurs to you while drunk tonight around 3am :)

  • Nick31/10/2009 at 18:30

they should put a decibel limit on them

  • Pat W31/10/2009 at 19:23

In some places I've lived, they were let off every day from the week before to almost the week after... now that was annoying. I haven't heard any yet but I've not had it that quiet in here, watching telly stuff...

  • Turkey Machine31/10/2009 at 19:25

Gotta work out what's for dinner and hope the dog doesn't eat anybody. Ciao!

  • RG31/10/2009 at 19:27

I'm so sleepy/dozy. I went to bed at 2 or 2.30 and slept all the way until the start of qualifying, though I did wake up once or twice. I haven't slept that long in ages.

Me too, although for far different reasons than yours!

I saw your tweet about working hard, didn't sound good.

This is my first proper 'downtime' day in a fortnight, I've been either sorting out the move or been at work (often both) and I think it has caught up with me.

  • Turkey Machine31/10/2009 at 19:56

it's a play... our house drama script to be exact. it's got to be performed next friday, i was challenged with writing a new script after our old one (not written by me, but by the house captain) was unacceptable, and as Deputy i had to help out, it's been a huge effort but we seem to be on track... kinda...

  • Pat W31/10/2009 at 21:01

Will share this here too. The content of this post may make me seem like I'm doing a Lukeh impression ;-)

Remember we discussed how the Muse song 'The Uprising' sounds like Dr Who, and someone (Mr C or Bassano?) posted the link to The Timelords - Doctorin' The Tardis...

    someone has done a mash-up.

should still only be an hour different?

  • lou31/10/2009 at 21:16

Mrs C/ Mr C, a question for you. you know as part of sidepodcast 3.0 we are able to share what we are reading etc on twitter and facebook... would it be possible that after we click 'share on ....' that it opens twitter or facebook or whatever in a separate tab?

sorry if this makes no sense...

  • Alison31/10/2009 at 21:17

I just have a lot of things that are potentially happening. I just want to know for sure where I stand. I'm about at the stage where I don't care one way or the other I just want decisions.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)31/10/2009 at 21:17

Exactly - I have got the right time if I didn't use UK codes.

It's difficult and loads of fun. You need a tall blond gorgeous athletic Swedish lady as a friend who is willing to teach you (as she grew up on skates ;) )

  • Alison31/10/2009 at 21:42

    Physician heal thyself

I have never had the chance to say that before and of course you haven't qualified yet

  • Nick31/10/2009 at 21:53

just take it easy, hold onto the side for a bit and remember to avoid leaning back!

    that was for lou's skating!

Having doohicky problems on my ye olde laptop on super slow connection... it freezes up when i post comments sometimes

:( Are you trying to say I'm argumentative? :(

  • Nick31/10/2009 at 21:55

Erm tell me what to do with my life?

Your young... take life as it comes, try new things, develop dreams about what you want to do in the future but dont worry about it too much, you have plenty of time.

Life is for living, not for worrying!

  • Steven Roy31/10/2009 at 21:56

    that was for lou's skating!

Standing on ice skates is a lot easier than you would think and so is walking in them. Slidey skating is a bit more difficult but even I managed that. Roller skates were different. I was like Bambi on ice with those.

  • Steven Roy31/10/2009 at 21:57

:( Are you trying to say I'm argumentative? :(

This reminds me of the Monty Python argument clinic sketch

  • Jon Waldock31/10/2009 at 21:57

:( Are you trying to say I'm argumentative? :(

no he's saying quite the opposite

  • me31/10/2009 at 21:58

it's not time to make a change, just sit down, take it slowly.

I'm very clumsy and I can manage. Honestly you'll be fine. You might even like it :P

Nick is spot on. Don't worry about all th things people tell you that you should. Find out what you enjoy and do it and try pretty much everything and every time you are given an opportunity to try something do it.

  • Nick31/10/2009 at 21:59

Give it a go. It'll take ages to get a good balance but once you get the hang of it, it can be fun.. My back always hurts afterwards, not from falling but from the posture and the fact I can't relax on ice.

    Indeed.

I realised this week I'd had 'Rumors' spelt wrong in my blog header for about 6 months.

    Good stuff that!!

  • Alison31/10/2009 at 22:17

I don't know what was wrong with it, other than 'your' not 'you're' which loads of people mistake

Hahaha I think the problem is that he mistook my question as a request for actual advice :P

  • LB2231/10/2009 at 22:17

Right I'm off, see you tomorrow for the race...!

  • lou31/10/2009 at 22:18

It doesn't matter how many times someone tells you the right thing to do. Even if it is right, you need to decide for yourself.

    tis very true.

I've had a similar thing about people telling me i should do photography for uni etc and i honestly couldn't decide, until the other day when it kinda clicked. i made the decision and now feel much better about it.

  • Lukeh31/10/2009 at 22:18

Did the BBC just insult me? That advert then said 'Newsround, on CBBC... news for you'

    Rudeness BBC, rudeness!

oh right.. sorry yeah i'm just gonna go for it, no more reservations about whether or not i'm successful, i'm gonna go to uni, study photography, have an amazing time and hopefully be in the place to get a job in a photography agency (like LAT :D ) or if i decide that isn't right for me then i can always do something like teaching... (as in teaching photography) if i go for it and it doesn't work out it's not the end of the world, but if i don't i may regret it.

i contemplated keeping it as my hobby, but photography and f1 are two things that really interest me, i mean i can read an article on f1 or photography and remember most of it for months (or moths in sidepodtime ;) ) but with psychology, although it's interesting to me i have to work so hard at it... it seems like a natural decision. it's like my heart choose what i was gonna do and it's taken for my head to catch up..

It's your life, you do what you want - when you're in your 30's stuck behind a desk hating your job you'd only look back on this time and wish you'd used the opportunities presented to you.

When you're an established photographer with your own sports photography agency you can go back and tell 'em where to stick it!

I'd written the post in WYSIWYG and not HTML so had just copied the code in error.

You can amend on the screen to how you like, then know what bit of the source code to edit.

    Red Bull news... non-news.

They've already decided which engine they are going to be using next season, just not revealed it to the media yet. Haven't a clue which it is (probably between Cosworth and Renault) and the likelihood of me being able to prise it out of my contact within the team is probably zero due to the non-disclosure agreements and such like they all sign.

    Non-news over.

Well lets see. You and bf are arguing. You are about to go travel round the world including meeting up with bf. The tax people screwed your wages. I can't see why you have anything on your mind either.

  • Dank31/10/2009 at 23:45

which you prefer them to use?

Probably the Renault. Least they have experience with it and I don't actually think whatever problems they've had with their units have been Renault's fault, more installation and other technical issues on Red Bull's part - coincidently since Geoff Willis departed.

Williams have gone with Cosworth though, so maybe they know something most folk don't? Or it could just be a cost-saving exercise as Frank's wallet is becoming a littler tighter these days?

I think Red Bull will be better off with the Renault... I'm a bit annoyed at Frank for choosing the Cosworth. I like Cosworth as a company but they aren't going to be anywhere next year and Williams are going to fall down the order fast. At least they will be a good yardstick for the new teams (who won't get near 'em).

I don't even want to think about it. When I spoke to the airline, it seemed to me that the cancellation fee was less than the fee for changing arrangements which is thoroughly insane. I don't want to deal with it at the moment.

There are only two people who can sort that but make sure you don't give up that trip now and never get the chance to take it. That you would regret for a very long time. You may think because you can afford to do it now you always will but that is often not the case.

Hmmm it's not just about feeling better though. If I'm just going to mope over the love of my life it doesn't really matter where I am. I've had financial problems my whole life. This is the first time I've had enough money to go anywhere. I don't want to waste it if I won't enjoy myself.
