It's a brand new month, and we are looking at a brand new circuit for the final race of the year. Abu Dhabi has looked stunning but so far the action has left quite a lot to be desired. Meanwhile, there is plenty to talk about as the season draws to a close:

  • Yesterday, Mr C finally got round to writing his post about the recent site updates, which he was supposed to do when he released them mid-week. Still, it's worth having a quick read if you want to know what we're trying to achieve and why it has taken us so long to get round to it. Don't forget to leave your thoughts and feedback at any time, we are always open to ideas.
  • Campos META confirmed the speculation that they have signed up Bruno Senna for 2010. They seem very impressed with the young driver, who has risen through the motorsport ranks very quickly. I haven't watched him in any lower formulae but have heard concerns that he may not be ready. What do you guys think? There's a breakout thread waiting for your comments.
  • Another thread we opened up yesterday was to discuss the lighting situation in Abu Dhabi. It seems to work very well, but it is so vastly different to Singapore that it has made me pause for thought. In one of my digest shows, I also picked up that Heidfeld did say it was brighter in Singapore, but that here it hasn't been a problem so far.

That'll do it for now. Don't forget that there is an extra special super duper two hour Parade Lap season finale extravaganza starting at 10am Sidepodtime today. In fact, here's a trailer for it, as created by host Alex:

We'll be waiting for you and I will see you in the comments.

November means NaNoWriMo (50000-word novel in a month) and NaBloPoMo (blog post a day for 30 days, which I'm doing at my wiki).

Have done 420 words on the novel so far and am here while waiting for further inspiration to strike. Will do the blog entry later.

  • Pat W01/11/2009 at 00:22

Hiya Pat how are you .. and all?

I'm good. I had a crappy day which improved in the evening, after I talked with my sister for the first time in weeks! (we've both been hugely busy, her more than I)

    Yourself?

Good morning everyone! I'm feeling happy and energetic, even though I probably should have gone to bed by now (I've got a computer fair to attend this morning before the race starts).

I can imagine .. its the blog a day .. never in a month of sundays could I do that unless people suggested what to write about

Often before I go somewhere or do something I get nervous and not want to do whatever it is I'd planned. Usually I'm worrying over nothing. Is it that, or worse?

  • Pat W01/11/2009 at 00:26

Good luck with that .. hehe I wouldn't even contemplate it

I'm tempted by the blog-a-day part... the novel-in-a-month sounds reeeally scary

  • Pat W01/11/2009 at 00:27

    Did the move go okay?

Very well, ta! That was why I slept :-)

I'm so glad I made the decision to do it, I was agonising over it but had to make a quick 'go or no go' decision and annoy my ex-landlord with the short-notice... but so worth it.

  • Alison01/11/2009 at 00:28

Often before I go somewhere or do something I get nervous and not want to do whatever it is I'd planned. Usually I'm worrying over nothing. Is it that, or worse?

Hmmmm I've sort of broken up with my boyfriend. I don't know.

If the blog a day could be on anything and was limited to say 500 words I could possibly have a go but 30 posts about F1 .. no way :(

  • jackie/saltire01/11/2009 at 00:29

Hmmmm I've sort of broken up with my boyfriend. I don't know.

Anything we can do to cheer you up a little?

  • Pat W01/11/2009 at 00:30

Ah oh dear.. I can't help with relationship advice 'cos I'm useless at it... is it worth a face-to-face chat?

  • Pat W01/11/2009 at 00:31

If the blog a day could be on anything and was limited to say 500 words I could possibly have a go but 30 posts about F1 .. no way :(

I couldn't write exclusively about F1 for a month, luckily mine has a broader scope and I have a backlog of ideas I've not had time for.

  • Steven Roy01/11/2009 at 00:32

Hmmmm I've sort of broken up with my boyfriend. I don't know.

Have you thought of just delaying the trip for a month? Would that be practical for work? At least that would buy you some time to think.

  • jackie/saltire01/11/2009 at 00:32

I couldn't write exclusively about F1 for a month, luckily mine has a broader scope and I have a backlog of ideas I've not had time for.

Wouldn't it be fun to have a sidepodblog-a-day site that we could all add to over a month and see where the blogging took us

  • Alison01/11/2009 at 00:33

Ah oh dear.. I can't help with relationship advice 'cos I'm useless at it... is it worth a face-to-face chat?

My sister came over before. There's not a lot anyone can say tbh. It's not that he's broken up with me or anything like that. Quite the opposite. I've just got myself in a bit of a confusingly complicated mess.

He's in India for a year. I have flights to go over there at the end of the week. After all this mess, I don't really want to go.

  • Pat W01/11/2009 at 00:36

I can barely make once a week... piece of advice: don't schedule posts for a set time each week, really hard to accomplish. I thought if I was forced to do one a day that would help.

  • Pat W01/11/2009 at 00:37

He's in India for a year. I have flights to go over there at the end of the week. After all this mess, I don't really want to go.

Yeah I got that, I'm trying to ascertain whether you into going over and speaking to him in person would help at all.

I think I said that when I was interviewed, do it whenever it pleases you. That way your product ends up being a piece of quality.

In theory the blog can be on anything, and there's no compulsion to include any words whatsoever (as long as there's original content in the entry of some kind). It's only NaNoWriMo that has a word limit.

I admit that my self-imposed restriction on F1 and related subjects will make things somewhat more difficult.

I usually do that, with the exception of the Preview which has to be done on a Thurs/Fri. The race reports get very late and I've lost my 'opinion' pieces. I need a rethink.

  • Alison01/11/2009 at 00:39

Yeah I got that, I'm trying to ascertain whether you into going over and speaking to him in person would help at all.

Maybe. It's kinda hard to tell until I get there. Plus seeing him is gonna be super emotional either way. I don't think that it's going to help me clarify anything.

  • jackie/saltire01/11/2009 at 00:50

It's gone a bit quiet. Am I talking to myself again?

i've no idea what to say or suggest really, other than i'm sure one way or another sooner or later the matter will become clearer, sometimes you just need time to mull things over in your subconscious...

  • Pat W01/11/2009 at 00:51

Maybe. It's kinda hard to tell until I get there. Plus seeing him is gonna be super emotional either way. I don't think that it's going to help me clarify anything.

I have no idea. The only thing that comes to mind is what you'll realise when you get there. It might not be clear cut but equally it could be one of:

"We've grown apart, best end it", or

"I was being silly, let's carry on"

    or something?

  • Lukeh01/11/2009 at 00:51

Fights can be good sometimes, but they feel epicly worse in long distance relationships because you can have a tendancy (thats a royal we, including myself) to step on egg shells sometimes

  • jackie/saltire01/11/2009 at 00:56

Epic fight far from the comfort of home isn't something I'd look forward to. Still you must love him, hope you manage to find a solution you are happy with

  • lou01/11/2009 at 00:58

Random f1 question, did we know Dave Richards was in the paddock this race?

Yeah. It's not a new argument. He thinks he loves me more than I love him. I disagree. He won't let it go. I find this tedious and annoying. I then start an argument about why he can't just be happy with me and what we have..... It's not good times. I'm just a bit bored of it.

I've no idea. I did wonder if representatives from all the new teams were there, as a precursor for next year

  • lou01/11/2009 at 01:00

I didn't, is it something I should have noticed?

i dunno... probably not... although it does seem like everyone with a connection to the sport is there this weekend, must be the venue... it's really not important i was just looking through photos and noticed him..

Yeah. It's not a new argument. He thinks he loves me more than I love him. I disagree. He won't let it go. I find this tedious and annoying. I then start an argument about why he can't just be happy with me and what we have..... It's not good times. I'm just a bit bored of it.

I think that is too tough to sort long distance. One of you needs to travel to the other, spend a month there and have lots of deep and meaningfuls...

I live in an apartment building - no kids rang the door and we would not have let them in anyway.

Not that it's a big thing in Denmark anyway!

Hmmmm I think the concept that this can be in any way "sorted" somehow is how this mess sprung up in the first place.

Well I am not sure what I mean by sorted. But you are only treading water in that situation until you spend some time Face to Face I think...

Hmmmm I think the concept that this can be in any way "sorted" somehow is how this mess sprung up in the first place.

Unfortunately I think you just need time to get your head round how you go forward and there is nothing you or anyone else can do about it now.

I like the picture. I must add that in my PS3, I drive for Panasonic Toyota and have won 27 races and am in my 4th season with 1 WDC. I wish PS3 could be reality

I heard that they were going to change their livery after ING left. I can't believe the other teams would care what their car looked like.

I heard that they were going to change their livery after ING left. I can't believe the other teams would care what their car looked like.

I am surprised they haven't changed it already. Imagine showing a prospective sponsor that and saying your name could be in the middle of this mess

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)01/11/2009 at 01:57

Very much so. They relied on those tyres and designed the whole car around a completely different philosophy.

I beg to differ. I was at the 2005 USGP. I also went to buy tires for my truck. Michelin's were twice what Bridgestone were and offered nearly half the mileage.

Much as I would like to sit up and watch the Yankees win again I have to sleep now so that I can be awake for Mr Alex Andronov's Parade Lap at 10am UK. Last year on this show Mr C made a cupcake live and Alex reckons he has something much better this year. Don't miss it.

    Good night all.

    Morning :)

Hi McLarenFan Steve. Where are you? GMT +11 (Australia) like Amy and myself?

  • McLarenFan Steve01/11/2009 at 07:37

I'm in England - just up early thanks to my 18 month old son who is currently running round the kitchen throwing a green plastic hoop! He adores cars and often watches big portions of the GP races.

  • Alex Andronov01/11/2009 at 07:37

Hahahaha that child popping at the climax of your song :P

Ah.. This time I have no children present. And I'm not in a car. I think the only particularly special thing is that this one is twice as long as usual!

I am eating beetroot in a attempt to bring Heikki some purple luck.

  • Alex Andronov01/11/2009 at 07:48

Alison... I know you were talking about that weird stomach cramp feeling earlier when you feel that something is wrong and you are stressing about it. And that sometimes the feeling comes first and then you have to work out what's wrong.

In our household we call the feeling "feeling a bit squelini". A Squelini is actually the place that they fix gondolas in Venice. But I liked the word, and it totally fits that nervous stomach feeling to my mind, so I borrowed it.

There was just an almighty noise just then as the shower curtain fell down. The noise wasn't from the curtainy part but the pole hitting the bath and so on! Jumped out of my skin!

  • Alex Andronov01/11/2009 at 08:34

Hahahah... I see a lot of Apple critics saying things like this these days:

Apple makes the arrogant assumption of thinking that it knows what you want and need. It, unfortunately, leaves the “why” out of the equation — as in “why would I want this?”

But it is actually an extract from a review of the very first Mac by John C. Dvorak on 19 Feb. 1984... Here it is in slightly wider context:

The nature of the personal computer is simply not fully understood by companies like Apple (or anyone else for that matter). Apple makes the arrogant assumption of thinking that it knows what you want and need. It, unfortunately, leaves the “why” out of the equation — as in “why would I want this?” The Macintosh uses an experimental pointing device called a ‘mouse’. There is no evidence that people want to use these things. I dont want one of these new fangled devices.

Watching F1 06 DVD. forgotten what Schumacher was until now!

Hehe. It seems ages ago, no? Just 3 years ago, actually...

    Hello, everyone. :D

  • Christine01/11/2009 at 09:06

    How are we all?

  • Journeyer01/11/2009 at 09:07

    How are we all?

Nursing a bit of a cough, but fine overall. :) Can't believe the season ends today. Oh well, the offseason will give me a chance to do other non-F1 things. Like shop for Christmas. :D

  • Alex Andronov01/11/2009 at 09:07

    How are we all?

It is a throughtly dark, cold, wet and windy day outside. And I am feeling surprisingly agitated... Busy busy busy

  • Amy01/11/2009 at 09:08

    How are we all?

Did you see I saved a panda? I bought this one. When I took off its clothes it looked like this.

  • Christine01/11/2009 at 09:09

Did you see I saved a panda? I bought this one. When I took off its clothes it looked like this.

So when you say saved, you actually mean you ate a panda.

  • Amy01/11/2009 at 09:10

So when you say saved, you actually mean you ate a panda.

but it was $8. $4 of that went to helping pandas erm, mate.

First she eats a chocolate panda and now she gets a Brownie as a reward... Is this the mythical perpetual chocolate machine? ;)

  • Amy01/11/2009 at 09:13

Ah, well that's alright then. Brownie points for you.

I quite fancied the stuffed panda that had a chocolate one in its paws. But it was $54 which is a little extreme for a small soft toy.

  • Christine01/11/2009 at 09:15

It is a throughtly dark, cold, wet and windy day outside. And I am feeling surprisingly agitated... Busy busy busy

It is miserable weather, isn't it? I'm sure yesterday it was like being back in summer and today... it's definitely November.

  • Alison01/11/2009 at 09:16

  • LB2201/11/2009 at 09:20

I don't think the weather wants me to go outside today. Oh well, more of an

excuse to watch the race! :)

  • Alex Andronov01/11/2009 at 09:24

actual f1 related predictions: Podium shall be both McLarens and a Kimi. I don't know how Heikki will get up there, but it'll happen.

  • Journeyer01/11/2009 at 09:29

Watching the 2001 British GP now.

As Mercedes celebrate the dominance of their F1 engine this season, spare a thought for the late Paul Morgan, who was instrumental to the founding of Ilmor with Mario Illien (ILlien-MORgan).

The F1 engine arm of Ilmor eventually became a fully-Mercedes owned operation, and is enjoying the biggest success it's had in a decade. I can now truly say that Ilmor/Mercedes F1 have well and truly bounced back from Morgan's death 8 years ago.

    Good morning Sidepodcast chums.

Just reading the press conference from yesterday and Webber seems to have been on particularly fine form!

On their chances against Lewis Hamilton: "Easy. We are not stopping tomorrow. We don't do a pit stop. We just put the option on for the last lap and we jump them like that, so pretty straightforward."

On whether he had any negative comments about Abu Dhabi: "We're paid lots of money to say good stuff, obviously. You know that we get backhanders to say that it's a great track, so we're not going to say anything negative. The deal is done before we all arrive, so 20 drivers, we get a backhander, easy from there! It's a great facility, it's a good track"

    :-D

i suppose each off season that passes brings me closer to hopefully one day being part of the f1 circus?...

  • me01/11/2009 at 16:32

I'm strongly considering leaving a voicemail message for the Debrief, but I've never done it before. How's this work?

if you have skype, you can search for sidepodcast and call for free.

otherwise 0121 28 87225 is the number you need, and leave amessage after the beep. make as many attempts as you like, but the limit is 10 mins.

  • lou01/11/2009 at 16:32

can we agree on competitive but not walking away with the first part/any part of the season? and having less amazing luck than last time

yes we can. i'd love him to get a second championship but i'd like the wins to be spread out over the year :)

  • me01/11/2009 at 16:32

i suppose each off season that passes brings me closer to hopefully one day being part of the f1 circus?...

  • Steven Roy01/11/2009 at 16:33

I'm strongly considering leaving a voicemail message for the Debrief, but I've never done it before. How's this work?

Either phone 0121 28 87225 or find sidepodcast on Skype. Phone and you will hear a meaadage from Christine. At the bleep leave your message. If you are not happy with anything you say just start again or go back a sentence or two and Christine will work her editing magic on it. You can take as many attempts as you like and she will only play the best one.

Well, with both McLarens, Brawns, Ferraris going to be competitive, and likleyhood of Renault and Red Bull being awesome next season, I think it will be close.

I don't see Rnault doing anything next season

  • McLarenFan Steve01/11/2009 at 16:37

It'll be interesting to see how McLaren get on with everyone agreeing not to use KERS next season - it was their great equaliser this season.

Well, with both McLarens, Brawns, Ferraris going to be competitive, and likleyhood of Renault and Red Bull being awesome next season, I think it will be close.

we'll have three WDC and one almost-WDC in the two 'top teams', a WDC and a will-be-WDC in the other two teams that should be strong. It HAS to be a great year...

I think the effect of KERS is exaggerated.

Having kept themselves in the top 10 at the start of the season, Force Honda B-Team have struggled to stay in the top 25 but have now dropped down onto the lowest of the lows....32nd.

The recent drop in performance can be put to the lack of motivation of a certain K.Raikkonen and F.Nando, due to this both drivers are scheduled to be leaving their current teams for the 2010 season.

Speaking of the 2010 Season, (It's gone a bit) Piquet Racing have now finished the 2010 season in 7th place, gaining 2 places.

After a dissapointing season, both teams are looking to the positives that they have improved greatly and hope to be title contenders for the upcoming season.

Despite missing the Abu Dhabi deadline, Scuderia Badoer finishes 4th overall. Team manager Journeyer is reasonably satisfied with the result and is optimistic the new rules will allow him to fully contend for the 2010 title.

Here's a nice game to play:

F1 has reached the end of another decade - its 6th. In fact, F1 has just completed its 60th season.

So with that, do name who you think are:

    #F1manoftheyear

    #F1manofthedecade

    My picks are:

    #F1manoftheyear - Jenson Button

    #F1manofthedecade - Ross Brawn

  • Lukeh01/11/2009 at 17:38

    #F1manoftheyear

    #F1manofthedecade

thats really hard to answer. im not sure i can.

however i shall try (to offend as many people as possible ;) )

    #f1manoftheyear - Sebastian Bourdais

    #f1manofthedeade - Kamui Kobayashi

    Anyone care to argue? :D

  • Journeyer01/11/2009 at 17:38

    Kobayashi for FIA president

  • Journeyer01/11/2009 at 17:40

Thanks, RG. Bernie's been running F1 for ages now... He's outlasted both Piquets, from the looks of it. Both Villeneuves, too.

  • guille2306 (back in Bariloche)01/11/2009 at 17:40

    see ya, guille.

  • Journeyer01/11/2009 at 17:42

  • Journeyer01/11/2009 at 17:43

    I also vote him

I'm actually waiting for a couple of big names to pop up (which haven't yet). Wanna see who'll say them. ;)

  • Rich01/11/2009 at 17:45

    #F1manoftheyear - Ross Brawn

    #F1manofthedecade - Ron Dennis

#F1manoftheyear - Nelsinho Piquet cos he got rid of Mankini-wearing Flavio.

#F1manofthedecade - Ross Brawn cos of the number of World Championship he has had a part in.

The organizers of Abu Dhabi must be very confident that sea-level rise is less of an issue than climate scientists think. With a 2m sea-level rise (which is just a little bit of the Greenland Cap) the map looks like this for Yas Marina.

    http://flood.firetree.net/?ll=24.4931,54.5094&z=4&m=2

But scientists now think the Ice Cap is much more sensitive to changes than previous thought.

Please not to be taken seriously - I just do not like monopolies and in terms of F1 it was a cash cow for the mankini-wearing guy. One manager should only manage one driver and should NOT otherwise be connected to a team.

    F1manofthedecade - err, arn't you a year early?

technically, yes (it should be 2001-2010), but as most people insist that the decade begins in a year ending with 0 (in this case, 2000), i'm just on time.

true. but even so, it's Alonso who's won the most titles on the current grid.

When you see the F1 cars passing beneath that massive wing shaped pit/media centre/grandstand thing in China - it looks very impressive, but it does not exactly get the blood racing does it?

And the big structures only serve to make the cars look slower on TV.

Yes. The venue did not overshadow the race.

    No, from Brazil.

ahh, rebuilding the seasons page at the moment. that's where you will eventually find it. will look for you now.

  • Alex Andronov01/11/2009 at 18:31

If I were looking for let's say the debrief from last year's last race, how would I go about finding it?

This has reminded me of something I wanted to say I have 3 times, since the relaunch, hit archives. Found the column I want, say "posts", and then wanted to press "more" at the bottom. Or click somewhere to get a list of all posts.

  • Journeyer01/11/2009 at 18:31

aw cmon, mr c. :P hehe.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)01/11/2009 at 18:31

I'm afraid I am not going to be able to join for the debrief :(

Aww come on Kathi - you worked so hard for this, you deserve to be applauded for it...

  • Steven Roy01/11/2009 at 18:34

If I were looking for let's say the debrief from last year's last race, how would I go about finding it?

Go to the archives page and search for year and month?

  • Alex Andronov01/11/2009 at 18:36

Thanks. How did you find it?

Do you really want to know?

    I went to http://www.sidepodcast.com/archive/

    I then chose November 2008

And then I pressed read previous. And then I changed the number in the address bar from 2 to 8 because I remembered that there were 8 pages of articles in November. Or rather I remembered that the 8th Page had the debrief on it. I remember a lot of things.

But of course you could page back threw the pages until you got to page 8.

  • Kathi01/11/2009 at 18:36

There are only a few posts there since me is fiddling

LCM Aléman is jubilant with a season-best score of 609 points. Between Vettel's excellent win, Heidfeld's impressive performance and decent supporting work from Rosberg, the team will be celebrating hard in the streets of Abu Dhabi tonight. (We will conveniently ignore Sutil's performance).

Conversely, LCM Barato had its worst result since Spain with a mere 429 points. The team manager cited a paperwork problem preventing Alguersuari from being replaced with Fisichella. Buemi was the only decent performer in the whole squad...

LCM Caro had its worst result since Italy, with only 338 points. Hamilton's brake problem sunk the team's chances without trace.

LCM Dragon's worst result since Belgium came today, with 504 points not meeting its usual high standards. Neither Hamilton nor Alonso covered themselves with glory, leaving Vettel and Button to do all the hard work.

LCM Fire Lizard had a terrible time too. 369 points was the worst score since Belgium, with most of the points coming from Button...

The LCM teams wish to express their delight that Kathi is the World Individual Champion and that the Sidepodcast League is the World Team Champion. They deserve their success immensely and there is pride that LCM at least gave the cream of the Sidepodcast league someone to beat.

  • Alex Andronov01/11/2009 at 18:39

    Why Alex, Why???

Katherine made the point that I had spent from 7-10 "preparing for the parade lap" messing around on Sidepodcast. Then broadcast for 2 hours, and then watched racing until 4:15 pm. Then I did chores, but not things for Katherine, things like "sorting post", and "filing", how thrilling.

And you know, she wasn't thrilled by the prospect of me disappearing again now for the rest of the night.

  • Steven Roy01/11/2009 at 18:40

    @Mr C

Did you see the e-mail I sent you earlier?

Finally, the experiment into different ways of playing Fantasy Racers has yielded the following conclusions:

The best way for me to play Fantasy Racers in terms of results is for me to use my brain and look at how people are performing before selecting drivers.

The second-best way was to pick all the Germans. It is not clear whether this is because Germans were good and undervalued this year or if non-logic-based methods of selection in general are good.

Picking all the cheap drivers was the third-best approach. It was not much worse than picking all the Germans as an approach.

The second-worst method was to choose favourites - especially if your favourites spend most of the season near the back of the grid anyway ;)

Worst of all was the method of always picking the priciest drivers. They're expensive for a reason... ...over-hype would appear to be the main one.

  • Alex Andronov01/11/2009 at 18:43

Tell her that she would enjoy joining in the comments and it will help her get to know people before she goes to Spa. That is bound to convince her

I think that will work, but better off season, when I haven't spent the whole day doing F1 I think I could get her to join us for the evening.

    OK guys,

While I have been watching the F1 today, my wife has watched about 6 hours of a Danish mini-series called 'Matador' (it's quite good...)

I turned to her and said "How can you watch 6 hours of the same thing? Wouldn't you get bored?"

She turned to me and said "Well you watched F1 all day :D"

    She wins.

'Matador' means 'Business Magnate' (I have no idea why) and it's an old show about a dude who moves to a small town with nothing and becomes a succesful businessman. It's also the time period that makes it interesting - it's set between 1930-1945.

Matador is also what we call Monopoly here.

  • Rich01/11/2009 at 21:47

It was the most boring race ever. I actually zoned out and missed 15 laps because the comments were more interesting than the race.

It is amazing that such an amazing venue produced such a boring race. I think I woke twice.

  • Lukeh01/11/2009 at 21:48
  • Adie01/11/2009 at 21:48

Ok everyone I need to go.

Thanks again for today - SPC makes F1 a lot more fun.

See you in the comments in the week.

  • Alison01/11/2009 at 21:48

I might settle down to watch some 24.....

  • Steven Roy01/11/2009 at 21:48

    I like Joe's headline

  • Lukeh01/11/2009 at 21:49

I posted this during the race earlier, a quick example of how Grosjean takes a chicane

Thats how boring the race was!

  • me01/11/2009 at 21:49

    I like Joe's headline

your response is ace too. i don't have that much history to call upon, but i don't remember a worse end to the season that this one.

  • Steven Roy01/11/2009 at 21:49

I posted this during the race earlier, a quick example of how Grosjean takes a chicane

    That's a football manager link

Is it moderated already? I didn't even check

  • RG01/11/2009 at 21:50

Who pays £16 million for Darren Fletcher anyways?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)01/11/2009 at 21:50

    You sold Nani and Anderson?

  • Lukeh01/11/2009 at 21:51

    You sold Nani and Anderson?

I had 10 first team midfielders!

  • Rich01/11/2009 at 21:51

Come January given the opportunity to watch another race in Abu Dhabi I challenge you to say no!

I actually found the install of the new (launched 30 October) KDE Netbook Remix more interesting - which is what I actually did this afternoon.

  • Lewis/LB2201/11/2009 at 21:52

Sorry, I missed the end of the live show.

    What did I miss

  • RG01/11/2009 at 21:53

Sorry, I missed the end of the live show.

Me going all teary and Mr/Mrs C being unable to end positively.

  • Steven Roy01/11/2009 at 21:53

Wrong link. Thats my Football manager transfers.

At least he hit the second apex

  • Alison01/11/2009 at 21:54

Are we having a reflective debrief next week or do I deserve a slap for suggesting it?

  • Steven Roy01/11/2009 at 21:54

    What did I miss

There will be a replay of the live show available tonight or tomorrow and you can watch the bit you missed

  • Lewis/LB2201/11/2009 at 21:55

Me going all teary and Mr/Mrs C being unable to end positively.

don't cry, surely it wasn't that bad!

    When did it finish?

  • Steven Roy01/11/2009 at 21:56

Are we having a reflective debrief next week or do I deserve a slap for suggesting it?

Right now there is no plan for next week. Maybe there will be a show but maybe not. There is a season review in the near future so that wil be reflective

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)01/11/2009 at 21:56

Pretty much all the pics from this race are a damn long shot of a small car with the stupid hotel in the background! :(

  • Rich01/11/2009 at 21:56

Me going all teary and Mr/Mrs C being unable to end positively.

I am all teary and so was Nick in the last couple of laps - I noticed his times dropped and he admitted it was difficult to control the emotions.

  • Steven Roy01/11/2009 at 21:58

Pretty much all the pics from this race are a damn long shot of a small car with the stupid hotel in the background! :(

I complained during the race about the TV directors. Nothing unusual in that though since I have been complaining about them for years. Like in Singapore they were far more interested in doing their bit for the tourist board than covering a sport.

  • Lewis/LB2201/11/2009 at 21:58

I hope there will be a debrief next week. I'll get bored in the off-season...

  • Rich01/11/2009 at 21:59

Pretty much all the pics from this race are a damn long shot of a small car with the stupid hotel in the background! :(

but it did change coloured and even blinked!

I really don't care for coloured lights. All that money and no firework show - even though it's the end of the season?

  • Lukeh01/11/2009 at 22:00

I hope there will be a debrief next week. I'll get bored in the off-season...

You won;t get bored on here, trust us

  • Steven Roy01/11/2009 at 22:00

I hope there will be a debrief next week. I'll get bored in the off-season...

There are shows most weekends. Christine and Mr C may havethe occasional week off but there will be Debriefs and sidepodpanels and who knows what else to get you through the winter

  • Alison01/11/2009 at 22:00

but it did change coloured and even blinked!

    Coloured lights are not groundbreaking!

  • Steven Roy01/11/2009 at 22:01

    Coloured lights are not groundbreaking!

Especially when someone points out that they are arranged in an approximately phallic shape and that is all you can see when you look at it

  • Lewis/LB2201/11/2009 at 22:02

You won;t get bored on here, trust us

    I hope not...

132 days to go, 132 days till 2010 F1, 132 days till the very small man talks about rubbish and Jenson will win. 132 days till F1 2010

  • Rich01/11/2009 at 22:02

I really don't care for coloured lights. All that money and no firework show - even though it's the end of the season?

but the hotel is like the fireworks lots of bright lights - I actually thought it was a bit cheesy. I am not sure I am going to complain about Valencia as I think this was more boring. At least at Singapore you seem to have closer shots so the cars looked gorgeous in the lighting.

  • Rich01/11/2009 at 22:04

Especially when someone points out that they are arranged in an approximately phallic shape and that is all you can see when you look at it

Architects are very proud if they buildings have an organic virile look. Certainly not as phallic as 30 St Mary Axe

  • Lukeh01/11/2009 at 22:04

Over the next few weeks I'll indluge myself back into the amazing F1 Yearbooks I get every christmas time then get fascinated by the new one, which will be AWESOME as it'll have lots of Brawn :D and maybe a introduction written by Ross Brawn!!!

  • Turkey Machine01/11/2009 at 22:05

I managed to cock things up at Blanchimont when I was 2nd in the race. I'd overtaken 2 cars on the first lap, and had an awesome setup for the car that was the perfect sweet spot. So I'm gonna park my backside here for the next couple of hours to drown my sorrows.

  • Scott Woodwiss01/11/2009 at 22:07

I reckon there's a load of race series which I can indulge in over the winter and look back on from this year. I reckon DTM and V8 Supercars would be a good starting point. Plus, I might just put in a pre-order for the 2009 Season Review DVD sometime soon.

  • Rich01/11/2009 at 22:08

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)01/11/2009 at 22:09

Umm, sort of. I ended up using Mint on my Netbook too ;)

  • Jon Waldock01/11/2009 at 22:10

    Scott...

This just came up on my Facebook feed...i got very confused...

Scott Woodwiss became a fan of Jenson Button and Dislike Button!

How can you both like and dislike Button ;)

  • Kathi01/11/2009 at 22:11

uhm I sort of accidentally recorded something. http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/names-wav

  • Scott Woodwiss01/11/2009 at 22:11

Scott Woodwiss became a fan of Jenson Button and Dislike Button!

The dislike button thing is to do with a Facebook feature. I don't hate Jenson at all, honest!

  • Jon Waldock01/11/2009 at 22:12

The dislike button thing is to do with a Facebook feature. I don't hate Jenson at all, honest!

  • Rich01/11/2009 at 22:12

Umm, sort of. I ended up using Mint on my Netbook too ;)

Interesting cos Mint is really a desktop with no optimising for Netbooks. I download Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala Netbook Remix but with the KDE desktop (Kubuntu)- it has quite a few problems so I would not advice. It looks nice but on the functionality side there are some problems.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)01/11/2009 at 22:13

My main problem was finding a persistent version that I could get the wifi working with. Mint works with everything in the Acer Aspire and I like the interface, so I'll stick with it :D

evening! what an awesome race! *

ok i have been drinking, but defiantly top 5 of the season in my book!

  • Lukeh01/11/2009 at 22:17

    1) he's been drinking

    2) the atmosphere was clearly better than in our front rooms ;)

A race is always going to be better in person, but as soon as he watched it on TV as a race he has to realise it was an absolute turkey of a race

    With a cool hotel

  • Nick01/11/2009 at 22:17

    1) he's been drinking

    2) the atmosphere was clearly better than in our front rooms ;)

It had an awesome ending... half the bar were shouting, the other half were too into it to speak!

    plus it looked awesome!

My main problem was finding a persistent version that I could get the wifi working with. Mint works with everything in the Acer Aspire and I like the interface, so I'll stick with it :D

That's good I thought it might be a bit slow. But I use Pardus which is also a desktop not optimised for netbooks so why am I surprised. Kubuntu Remix dissapointing. Well if anythings fo wrong with your windows you have a safety door with your persistent drive.

  • Nick01/11/2009 at 22:17

  • Alison01/11/2009 at 22:24

    It was better than silverstone!

Alcohol is good then? I can't complain though. I did tell you my fluffy boy would win.

  • Lukeh01/11/2009 at 22:24

    It's a minority of two

    Nick and Bernie's bank account

  • Nick01/11/2009 at 22:25

you're in a minority of one there good chap.

    I loved it!

  • Pat W01/11/2009 at 22:26

    I loved it!

You didn't love the race. You loved the race being in your back yard.

    Where was the racing?

  • me01/11/2009 at 22:26

    I loved it!

i do not doubt that for a second.

  • Lukeh01/11/2009 at 22:26

    I loved it!

I've never seen a race where the comments were so distracted! Even Crofty and Ant were chatting on stuff not related to the race!

  • me01/11/2009 at 22:26

You didn't love the race. You loved the race being in your back yard.

    :D

  • Alison01/11/2009 at 22:26

    I loved it!

I have to say I didn't mind it. I only listened while working though. I'd have been happier if it had been won fair and square. Dunno what McLaren have done to break their car.

  • Nick01/11/2009 at 22:27

You didn't love the race. You loved the race being in your back yard.

    Best race ever!

Only because the leading car broke down.

  • Christine01/11/2009 at 22:28

    Best race ever!

    Because...?

  • Nick01/11/2009 at 22:28

    Doing donuts after a win = awesomeness x 1000!

  • me01/11/2009 at 22:29

no. vettel was matching lewis easy.

  • Lukeh01/11/2009 at 22:29

Only because the leading car broke down.

I dunno... I think Seb had a hell of a chance anwyway the way he was going

  • Alison01/11/2009 at 22:29

Only because the leading car broke down.

Nooooo! He got past in the stop as per usual..... :P

  • Lukeh01/11/2009 at 22:29

    Because...?

I assume it was for hotel related purposes. In that case, I agree, it was the best race ever.

  • Pat W01/11/2009 at 22:30

no. vettel was matching lewis easy.

It would have been a great race had Lewis not had that problem - it sucked the life out of it.

  • Jon Waldock01/11/2009 at 22:30

Nooooo! He got past in the stop as per usual..... :P

Yes....Hamilton did do a stop and Vettel did pass him...

Except Hamilton stopped FOR THE ENTIRE RACE

    ;)

  • Rich01/11/2009 at 22:30

no. vettel was matching lewis easy.

yes but has fluffy boy actually overtaken this year - sure Lewis was not pulling away but we do not know for how long he was having problems.

  • me01/11/2009 at 22:30

It would have been a great race had Lewis not had that problem - it sucked the life out of it.

not sure. i think lewis was battling for 3rd/4th.

  • Nick01/11/2009 at 22:31

    Because...?

It looked so good... waiting for somone to crash in the pitlane... kobyashi tearing the field apart... the beer... button vs webber at the end... the sunset... the red wine... the awesomely long straight... the sheesha... the sliding around at the end...

I guess its just me ;)

  • Christine01/11/2009 at 22:31

I guess its just me ;)

    100%.

  • Kathi01/11/2009 at 22:32

Hehe love it! the ending is brilliant!

Not sure if I can trust your judgement ;)

  • Rich01/11/2009 at 22:32

I dunno... I think Seb had a hell of a chance anwyway the way he was going

He might have overtaken through pit stops - no way on the race track - how many good overtakes were there?

  • me01/11/2009 at 22:32

I guess its just me ;)

i don't want to burst your bubble nick, i'm glad you're happy.

    it is just you.

  • RG01/11/2009 at 22:32

    kobyashi tearing the field apart

No offence, he passed one person on track, and was slightly quicker than a few people

  • Nick01/11/2009 at 22:32

yes but has fluffy boy actually overtaken this year - sure Lewis was not pulling away but we do not know for how long he was having problems.

2x in brazill... i almost fainted!

  • Alison01/11/2009 at 22:32

yes but has fluffy boy actually overtaken this year - sure Lewis was not pulling away but we do not know for how long he was having problems.

He overtook about 5 people last race. He came from 16th to 4th and had a better race than Jenson's that everyone is still raving about.

  • Nick01/11/2009 at 22:33

i don't want to burst your bubble nick, i'm glad you're happy.

I have a teflon bubble... and the entire off season to prove it! ;)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)01/11/2009 at 22:33

Well guys, I managed to finish both posts in one day, such was my desire to move on from this dull race!

Please find attached my final driver consistency post for 2009, and I sincerely hope you like it as much as Nick enjoyed the race ;)

  • Nick01/11/2009 at 22:33

Major BBC fail tonight with putting the race up me thinks. It went up for a little while and hasn't returned. I just want to make some clips :(

  • Rich01/11/2009 at 22:34

No offence, he passed one person on track, and was slightly quicker than a few people

Just that the one persons is the World Champion to be a=nd driving a Brawn - it was pretty amazing - but then I do not think the Toyota is such a bad car. He also beat Trulli his team mate.

  • me01/11/2009 at 22:34

I have a teflon bubble... and the entire off season to prove it! ;)

    where's my doohickey filter?

  • Alison01/11/2009 at 22:34

He might have overtaken through pit stops - no way on the race track - how many good overtakes were there?

Well no, how often does overtaking happen on track at the front of the field though? The only example I can think of all season is Kimi past Fisi and that was safety car influenced.

  • me01/11/2009 at 22:34

Just that the one persons is the World Champion to be a=nd driving a Brawn - it was pretty amazing - but then I do not think the Toyota is such a bad car. He also beat Trulli his team mate.

weren't they on different strategies? like kobs, fat jenson?

  • Jon Waldock01/11/2009 at 22:34

    -teflon bubble ;)

    *light kobs, fat jenson

Oh deary me. Really has been a lot of wine eh?

  • RG01/11/2009 at 22:35

    *light kobs, fat jenson

Something like that, and Jenson made a mistake or took the corner all wrong didn't he?

  • Rich01/11/2009 at 22:35

weren't they on different strategies? like kobs, fat jenson?

Yes and actually I think one stop is not as fast if you analyse the results - so that makes it more impressive.

  • Alison01/11/2009 at 22:36

Something like that, and Jenson made a mistake or took the corner all wrong didn't he?

Just out the pit with freezing tyres I think and yeah missed his braking zone as he was under pressure I think.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)01/11/2009 at 22:37

Something like that, and Jenson made a mistake or took the corner all wrong didn't he?

Just out the pit with freezing tyres I think and yeah missed his braking zone as he was under pressure I think.

First laps and outlaps do not count as proper overtaking moves anyway!

It was a genuine overtake and Jenson slightly missed his braking point and I think went to deep. It was only his second race you should be pleased that Timo's replacement beat Jarno.

Hahahaha have we seen the BBC quiz on the 2009 season??

One of the questions you have to fill in a blank using one of three options. "Massa says BLANK robbed him of glory"

One of the options.... Smedley! How dare they even suggest that.

I sense some dislike for Kamikaze Kobayashi.

i think he's brilliant. i love that he's come into f1 with the attitude he has.

  • Steven Roy01/11/2009 at 22:45

He might have overtaken through pit stops - no way on the race track - how many good overtakes were there?

None. The only overtaking was when one person had a full tank and someone else had an emty

  • RG01/11/2009 at 22:45

i think he's brilliant. i love that he's come into f1 with the attitude he has.

Was he ever charged for what he did to Nakajima in Brazil?

Not at all. I just don't think you deserve ultimate credit for getting past a car that's handling like an elephant.

  • me01/11/2009 at 22:46

Was he ever charged for what he did to Nakajima in Brazil?

nope. but was discussed in the drivers meeting.

  • Lukeh01/11/2009 at 22:46

Was he ever charged for what he did to Nakajima in Brazil?

What did he do wrong with that though?

  • Turkey Machine01/11/2009 at 22:47

"This is how I drive, I ain't changing it cos there's nothing wrong with it, you don't like it, tough"

The last guy that said that had got bitchslapped in driver briefings. A certain A. Senna I think.

  • Nick01/11/2009 at 22:47

nope. but was discussed in the drivers meeting.

It took up highly valuable trulli time!

  • Steven Roy01/11/2009 at 22:47

One of the options.... Smedley! How dare they even suggest that.

    Outrageous

  • Pat W01/11/2009 at 22:47

What did he do wrong with that though?

Swerved across the race track and blocked Nakajima. That's not on.

  • me01/11/2009 at 22:48

It took up highly valuable trulli time!

    :)

  • Turkey Machine01/11/2009 at 22:48

What did he do wrong with that though?

Were you even watching that race dude? He just up and rammed Nakajima off the road. Kazuki had a right to be beefed with Kamui for that, more so than Trulli was knarked at Sutil.

  • Nick01/11/2009 at 22:48

Swerved across the race track and blocked Nakajima. That's not on.

Nakajima shouldnt have been in the way!

I'll have to watch it again, I don't remember him swerving across. Although I am tired :(

  • RG01/11/2009 at 22:49

Nakajima shouldnt have been in the way!

He was coming out of the pits

  • Rich01/11/2009 at 22:49

you may not like it, but it's the truth. kobs didn't pass button solely on merit, no matter how much you really want him to have.

You could argue there is no such thing as solely on merit. No car will be equal with grip, tyre condition etc - it was plucky move and he did not botch it like Kubes did (and then blamed Buemi after the race ). How many times have we seen Sutil make a fool of himself in trying to overtake. He deserves some credit. The really sad thing is if it had been Button who did the move it would have been fantastic and mark of a champion. I would agree Button allowed the situation to arise.

  • Steven Roy01/11/2009 at 22:50

What did he do wrong with that though?

He drove Nakajima off the track and into a wall at 180 mph.

  • Pat W01/11/2009 at 22:50

Nakajima shouldnt have been in the way!

Irrelevant. You NEVER chop another car in open wheel racing.

  • Nick01/11/2009 at 22:50

He was coming out of the pits

so the real question is.. why didnt he retyre? :P

  • Lukeh01/11/2009 at 22:50

Nope I still blame nakajima for it.

  • Pat W01/11/2009 at 22:50

It's an unwritten rule about the not moving twice thing

Nothing to do with moving once or twice, and everything to do with not ramming a guy off the road

  • RG01/11/2009 at 22:51

The really sad thing is if it had been Button who did the move it would have been fantastic and mark of a champion.

    Sadly, thats quite possibly true

  • Turkey Machine01/11/2009 at 22:51

It's an unwritten rule about the not moving twice thing

It's actually written. One of the articles states: "You may move your car once to defend, and then back onto the racing line if it's safe to do so."

  • Rich01/11/2009 at 22:51

I think i agree with Lukeh here. He should have given him more room, but he wont have seen him, he didnt ram him, he moved over, he was allowed to do that

To me, the view down the straight makes it look like he's defending his position quite cautiously against a very agressive Nakajima

  • Pat W01/11/2009 at 22:59

Sorry... I still can't see why Kobayashi's at fault... nakajima swerved across much more than Kobayashi. I'm not saying I'm wrong and you're wrong or anything, I just don't understand the blaming

Nakajima could do that because he was the car behind making the overtake. That's allowed. Once he was alongside he held his line in order to take the inside at the corner. The driver under attack also has to hold their line, not drive into the path of a faster car.

  • RG01/11/2009 at 22:59

I think i agree with Lukeh here. He should have given him more room, but he wont have seen him, he didnt ram him, he moved over, he was allowed to do that

    (not here)

Considering he was slower and Nakajima clearly had him, he left him no room on the outside...

or am I going all trulli here?

  • Nick01/11/2009 at 22:59

You may not believe us Nick so here is Joe's take on it

If i had to pay a 50 quid fee for wifi at a circuit which cost that much i would be annoyed too...

  • Jon Waldock01/11/2009 at 23:01

He didnt drive into him, he moved over. It dosent matter if you're coming out the pits or whatever, he has a right to defend his position. Clearly it ended up in an accident but it wasnt points worthy

  • Rich01/11/2009 at 23:02

Here is the link to Kobayashi's overtake - he is really dicing with Jenson and Jenson had completed half a lap, so it is not all due to "freezing tyres" - yes Jenson went too deep under pressure from Kobayashi. If Alonso had done that move everyone would say that is fantastic, if Nick made the move no one who have notice because the cameras would have been elsewhere.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cAFTC4RyAs

  • Steven Roy01/11/2009 at 23:02

Sorry... I still can't see why Kobayashi's at fault... nakajima swerved across much more than Kobayashi. I'm not saying I'm wrong and you're wrong or anything, I just don't understand the blaming

Kobayashi moved right initially then left into Nakajima which is totally the wrong place to be since the racing line is on the right. He had no right to move left after moving right. He just chopped Nakajima. There was no room for him to move to that side of the track without Nakajima hitting him even if the move was allowed.

  • Pat W01/11/2009 at 23:02

He didnt drive into him, he moved over. It dosent matter if you're coming out the pits or whatever, he has a right to defend his position. Clearly it ended up in an accident but it wasnt points worthy

That's exactly the problem though. He moved over in a blocking manouvre. Blocking is not on and has been tolerated for far too long.

  • Steven Roy01/11/2009 at 23:03

I think i agree with Lukeh here. He should have given him more room, but he wont have seen him, he didnt ram him, he moved over, he was allowed to do that

Why would he have moved to the inside of the corner if he was not blocking someone. That would screw up his corner speed

  • Alison01/11/2009 at 23:03

But his car must have been handling like a beached whale with all that fuel on board? You get closer than you'd normally be allowed to on an outlap. It's just a fact of life.

There is a fine line between defending and blocking, and that line was blurred by the likes of Senna and Schumacher so much that the younger drivers thought it okay to swerve across the track in the way they did. It isn't. That causes accidents.

  • Jon Waldock01/11/2009 at 23:07

You cannot seriously believe that is why he wrote that. Every single person in the comments was bored by the race and Christine and I got into a long discussion about how refuelling being banned will make racing better or worse. No-one made any attempt to suggest they were enjoying the race.

For the first time ever I totally zoned out of the race and missed 15 laps.

"My" definition is the one that has been used for years by the likes of Roebuck and whoever else.

  • Rich01/11/2009 at 23:08

But his car must have been handling like a beached whale with all that fuel on board? You get closer than you'd normally be allowed to on an outlap. It's just a fact of life.

If this is the case we should be seeing more overtaking after cars leave the pitlane than we do - it seems like people cannot handle that a new driver can pull a move like that on the world champion. I am not sure I have seen Vettel ever get that close to even make an overtake?

  • Jon Waldock01/11/2009 at 23:08

Blimey I don't have any kind of vendetta. It just depends where the cars are relative to one another when they come out the pits.

  • Steven Roy01/11/2009 at 23:10

We clearly have a different definition of blocking

Blocking is banned. You cannot chop across in front of someone and cause an accident. A driver has the right to change his line but he must give the other drivers racing room. He can't just chop accross and force Nakajima to take avoiding action.

  • Lukeh01/11/2009 at 23:10

I think the current generation has picked up remarkably few of Senna or Schumacher's dispicable driving habits but Kobayashi needs to learn that he is in F1 and not dogems.

  • Steven Roy01/11/2009 at 23:12

You're definition of block is weaving, my definition of blocking is defending

A driver can defend but he has to take that line before the other driver is committed to it and well before the braking area.

  • Pat W01/11/2009 at 23:13

I think the current generation has picked up remarkably few of Senna or Schumacher's dispicable driving habits but Kobayashi needs to learn that he is in F1 and not dogems.

The junior series have been overrun by those sorts of moves for a while. They do seem to be improving again. I can't think why. :-)

I don't understand either. Formula Ford and Formula 3 have had these problems since Senna's days but they seem to grow out of it when they reach F1 or soon after. Given the scope Schumacher was given to ram people off the track or into walls I am amazed the current generation don't use their cars as a weapon more

So why don't you use the same word everyone else uses and has used for decades? Blocking has always meant the same thing

  • Jon Waldock01/11/2009 at 23:18

What i don't get (couple of weeks late i know)

Is why Heikki got a penalty for the pit release last race when he did nothing wrong, he stopped asap. He the only difference between that and the Massa sinapore incident was that there was a proper fire, and that's beacuse kovi was unlucky enough to have a car behind him.

  • Pat W01/11/2009 at 23:18

Because to me it dosen't mean that, and i've never had a conversation using those words before, so now i know that you're meaning differently to what im saying.

I thought it was more a penalty for McLaren than Heikki.

but I thought Massa also got a penalty for unsafe release at Singapore. Nick got a penalty at Singapore during qualifying for apparently blocking Rubens but due to the pit entrance it was sort of unavoidable.

  • Jon Waldock01/11/2009 at 23:20

It was both, Mclaren got a money fine and heikki got a 25 second penalty

Watching the replay of the end of Abu Dhabi. Here's what I find interesting - it seems that both Brawns were faster than both RBRs when night fell. Part of it could be Vettel cruising, but it seems that Brawn have (rather belatedly) cured their low-temperature woes.

  • Jon Waldock01/11/2009 at 23:21

now that is a good spot. webber had brake issues, and vettel must've been taking it easy, but fair point.

Nick was catching Rubens at quite a rate and emotions got the better of him in the final couple of laps and his charge on Rubens died. He has admitted it - not that I think he could have overtaken.

  • Rich01/11/2009 at 23:25

They were saying Webber had brake issue but he put second lap from the end a purple sector so it could not have been that bad!

Brawn weren't faster by a lot (otherwise Button would've passed Webber), but it's still a key win for Brawn and something to note for next season.

Could it just be that they had less wear - the problem with this is that Vettel fastest lap of the race was right at the end.

Yet Webber struggled. It seems that Vettel was able to take care of his brakes better. Which brings me to another observation.

Tilke's new tracks have been brake-busters, especially Singapore and Abu Dhabi. This could be down to Tilke's love for very slow corners at the end of very fast straights.

This is one reason why Timo, if given a decent car could do well - he is able to manage these. I think Nick to - his unmatched run of finishes suggests he knows how to look after a car.

A car flipped in the NASCAR race at Talladega today. The driver was very lucky to be uninjured, he got out and walked away but then had some home truths for the series.. and NASCAR doesn't like being criticised.

shouldn't the flaps stop that from happening?

  • Alison01/11/2009 at 23:48

shouldn't the flaps stop that from happening?

Almost looks like the flap is what lifted the car in the first place.

  • Pat W01/11/2009 at 23:49

shouldn't the flaps stop that from happening?

The roof flaps should, and have done so before. It seems the air gets under the rear wing and lifts the car. The wing is relatively new.

  • me01/11/2009 at 23:50

    he just starts floating.

  • Bert01/11/2009 at 23:50

shouldn't the flaps stop that from happening?

Yes, they should, and they didn't. I think the speculation of the commentators, that the rear wing may have had something to do with it is not far off the point.

I have seen many cars rotate around and start to lift, when the roof flaps open the car sits back down.

Flyin' Ryan Newman is absolutely right, the problem is th with the race format, specifically the restricter plate, which cuts HP by 40% causes this 180MPH 5 hour traffic jam.

As soon as that car turned round it was generating a ridiculous amount of lift. That should be easily sortable.

Good to hear a driver say what he thinks and he certainly let rip.

It's pretty impressive for the speed. I don't care that it's not great graphically. It does its job.

    Anyways, night!!

  • Jeremy (GMT 11)02/11/2009 at 00:07

You cannot seriously believe that is why he wrote that. Every single person in the comments was bored by the race and Christine and I got into a long discussion about how refuelling being banned will make racing better or worse. No-one made any attempt to suggest they were enjoying the race.

I did. But then again, I enjoy every race.

Do I just put on my simpleton's hat? I don't think so....

It was a long, late night for me, but I remember being excited by the Lewis/Vettel battle, being disappointed at Lewis going out, then wondering if Kobayashi could get on the podium, watching to see where all the other one stoppers would end up, Kimi vs. Kovi, I'm sure there was other stuff in there and then Button vs. Webber.

"From a position of sheer dejection in practice, when Kubica was over a second quicker than him, Nick picked himself up and pushed his car to within smelling distance of a podium and help the team grab 6th place off Williams in the Constructors' championship "

This is what makes me so angry - it sounds like more poor slow NIck

I do not care what is said this year Nick was quite significantly better than Robert overall. I agree last year it was the opposite. I do not get why Robert is consider a possible world champion a nick a "slow tortosie" - which is how BBC (Crofty) describes him.

Ultimately, what will be remembered is that Robert only took almost 2 seasons to win a race and contend for the title. In the 10 seasons Nick's been in F1, he hasn't done either, especially the latter.

even so - Robert put himself in a position to take the win. And even if Robert was let by, he had to build the gap - which he did.

but that's why I put emphasis on the latter - you can't contend that Nick's never even been close to mounting a title challenge.

  • Rich02/11/2009 at 00:36

There were circumstances, Nick style of driving did not suit the car particularly in qualifying. Last year there was more of gap between Felipe and Kimi in points for most of the year that there was between Robert and Nick. This year Massa had accumulate more than double the points that Kimi had until the accident. At no point has Robert ever been that dominant over Nick and more particularly Robert has never got fastest laps the way Nick has (I think that year he got two). Its emotion rather than analysis that Robert and Kimi are better than Nick and Felipe.

While these are indeed valid reasons, it doesn't really change the bottom line that it was Robert that got BMW's best results.

But I do wonder - why has the paddock in general ignored Nick while Kimi, Felipe, and Robert have all gone on to better things?

  • Journeyer02/11/2009 at 00:42

In that year when Nick was teamed with Mark he got two seconds against Mark's one third and got a pole and more accumulated points until his accident sidelined the last four races. Yet I still see people say Mark thrashed Nick that season.

I agree with you on that. Nick actually did better that season - that's why BMW wanted him back at Sauber.

Frank Williams has said he is one of the best drivers in terms of set up and to develop a car - I think you can see that this year. From Spa the car was capable of scoring points consistently.

But you could also say the same of Rubens. It's one thing to set up the car well, it's another to be fast enough to win races and titles.
