It's a brand new month, and we are looking at a brand new circuit for the final race of the year. Abu Dhabi has looked stunning but so far the action has left quite a lot to be desired. Meanwhile, there is plenty to talk about as the season draws to a close:
- Yesterday, Mr C finally got round to writing his post about the recent site updates, which he was supposed to do when he released them mid-week. Still, it's worth having a quick read if you want to know what we're trying to achieve and why it has taken us so long to get round to it. Don't forget to leave your thoughts and feedback at any time, we are always open to ideas.
- Campos META confirmed the speculation that they have signed up Bruno Senna for 2010. They seem very impressed with the young driver, who has risen through the motorsport ranks very quickly. I haven't watched him in any lower formulae but have heard concerns that he may not be ready. What do you guys think? There's a breakout thread waiting for your comments.
- Another thread we opened up yesterday was to discuss the lighting situation in Abu Dhabi. It seems to work very well, but it is so vastly different to Singapore that it has made me pause for thought. In one of my digest shows, I also picked up that Heidfeld did say it was brighter in Singapore, but that here it hasn't been a problem so far.
That'll do it for now. Don't forget that there is an extra special super duper two hour Parade Lap season finale extravaganza starting at 10am Sidepodtime today. In fact, here's a trailer for it, as created by host Alex:
We'll be waiting for you and I will see you in the comments.
Happy Mo-Vember!
Noooo! Christmas is coming too fast! SLOW DOWN!
20 days till the new F1 game comes out?
enough with the breast cancer pink already. its the boys turn this month
ah is that what the reference was, it went over my head
hehe i've just had the loveliest chat with my best friend and it's made me fell all happy :) i haven't spoken to her in ages :) and but ages i mean a week :)
Morning
Hi Jackie
good to catch up isn't it :-)
Hi Jackie
Hiya Pat how are you .. and all?
good morning :) how are you today Jackie?
November means NaNoWriMo (50000-word novel in a month) and NaBloPoMo (blog post a day for 30 days, which I'm doing at my wiki).
Have done 420 words on the novel so far and am here while waiting for further inspiration to strike. Will do the blog entry later.
Hello, ello, lo
love it! half term is so awful cause we've all be trying to get as much work done as possible..
I'm good thanks .. how was the trip to London .. do I need a sidepodhat yet?
I'm good. I had a crappy day which improved in the evening, after I talked with my sister for the first time in weeks! (we've both been hugely busy, her more than I)
Yourself?
Good luck with that .. hehe I wouldn't even contemplate it
on wednesday? it was lovely thanks :) such a brilliant day :)
Good morning everyone! I'm feeling happy and energetic, even though I probably should have gone to bed by now (I've got a computer fair to attend this morning before the race starts).
:D
Yep I'm good thanks .. caught up on some sleep this morning and blogged this evening
I'll join you guys in today. I don't want to feel pressured into going on my trip. I don't really understand what's happened.
I did, but on further thought i'm going to do it in the summer.
Good luck with that .. hehe I wouldn’t even contemplate it {Comment #19}
I find it fun. I should perhaps have outlined it slightly better though...
Sleep is good, I did same.
I can imagine .. its the blog a day .. never in a month of sundays could I do that unless people suggested what to write about
Did the move go okay?
Often before I go somewhere or do something I get nervous and not want to do whatever it is I'd planned. Usually I'm worrying over nothing. Is it that, or worse?
I'm tempted by the blog-a-day part... the novel-in-a-month sounds reeeally scary
Very well, ta! That was why I slept :-)
I'm so glad I made the decision to do it, I was agonising over it but had to make a quick 'go or no go' decision and annoy my ex-landlord with the short-notice... but so worth it.
Hmmmm I've sort of broken up with my boyfriend. I don't know.
If the blog a day could be on anything and was limited to say 500 words I could possibly have a go but 30 posts about F1 .. no way :(
Anything we can do to cheer you up a little?
Ah oh dear.. I can't help with relationship advice 'cos I'm useless at it... is it worth a face-to-face chat?
I couldn't write exclusively about F1 for a month, luckily mine has a broader scope and I have a backlog of ideas I've not had time for.
Have you thought of just delaying the trip for a month? Would that be practical for work? At least that would buy you some time to think.
Wouldn't it be fun to have a sidepodblog-a-day site that we could all add to over a month and see where the blogging took us
My sister came over before. There's not a lot anyone can say tbh. It's not that he's broken up with me or anything like that. Quite the opposite. I've just got myself in a bit of a confusingly complicated mess.
I mean is it worth talking to him face to face..
Twice in a week, that's good for me
That would be really interesting actually
He's in India for a year. I have flights to go over there at the end of the week. After all this mess, I don't really want to go.
I can barely make once a week... piece of advice: don't schedule posts for a set time each week, really hard to accomplish. I thought if I was forced to do one a day that would help.
Yeah I got that, I'm trying to ascertain whether you into going over and speaking to him in person would help at all.
I think I said that when I was interviewed, do it whenever it pleases you. That way your product ends up being a piece of quality.
If the blog a day could be on anything and was limited to say 500 words I could possibly have a go but 30 posts about F1 .. no way :( {Comment #34}
In theory the blog can be on anything, and there's no compulsion to include any words whatsoever (as long as there's original content in the entry of some kind). It's only NaNoWriMo that has a word limit.
I admit that my self-imposed restriction on F1 and related subjects will make things somewhat more difficult.
I am to sporadic but I am making the effort to do it more regularly.
Hmmmm I’ve sort of broken up with my boyfriend. I don’t know. {Comment #33}
*hug*
I usually do that, with the exception of the Preview which has to be done on a Thurs/Fri. The race reports get very late and I've lost my 'opinion' pieces. I need a rethink.
Maybe. It's kinda hard to tell until I get there. Plus seeing him is gonna be super emotional either way. I don't think that it's going to help me clarify anything.
It's gone a bit quiet. Am I talking to myself again?
Are you my concience?
i've no idea what to say or suggest really, other than i'm sure one way or another sooner or later the matter will become clearer, sometimes you just need time to mull things over in your subconscious...
I have no idea. The only thing that comes to mind is what you'll realise when you get there. It might not be clear cut but equally it could be one of:
"We've grown apart, best end it", or
"I was being silly, let's carry on"
or something?
Probably ;)
:( .. see I can reply to myself too
:)
Aww im sorry :(
Hmmm I'm not sure that's how it would go. I think we're pretty much destined to have an epic fight. I'm just putting it off.
Fights can be good sometimes, but they feel epicly worse in long distance relationships because you can have a tendancy (thats a royal we, including myself) to step on egg shells sometimes
I'm perfectly happy, no need to be sorry. (amazing what some extra sleep will do for my mood :P
Epic fight far from the comfort of home isn't something I'd look forward to. Still you must love him, hope you manage to find a solution you are happy with
Random f1 question, did we know Dave Richards was in the paddock this race?
Yeah. It's not a new argument. He thinks he loves me more than I love him. I disagree. He won't let it go. I find this tedious and annoying. I then start an argument about why he can't just be happy with me and what we have..... It's not good times. I'm just a bit bored of it.
I didn't, is it something I should have noticed?
ah yes, have had that one before. he probably knows you do, just wants you to show it more. its a typically male thing
I've no idea. I did wonder if representatives from all the new teams were there, as a precursor for next year
i dunno... probably not... although it does seem like everyone with a connection to the sport is there this weekend, must be the venue... it's really not important i was just looking through photos and noticed him..
SIDEPODCAST "Is My Favourite Website - God"
Ah I love the random tagline generator :)
send him an mp3 of the song "anything you can do I can do better"
I can't though. He's going on about it so much anything I do just looks like I'm doing it because of his whining.
is that an actual quote?
I'm sure it's in the bible somewhere. After the big storyline twist.
somewhere near the back
which is? [i advise you to tread carefully ;) ]
That thing. With the guy and the other thing. At that place.
He's just a stupid boy. He's the one that wants to live in a separate continent. I'm not sure quite how that demonstrates loving commitment. Then again I'm not a man.
i'm sure Lukeh means the sidepodbible ;) you know the one that Mrs C told the story from last christmas? about the baby DC?
Babay DC? Daytona? or Dayton, or wahtever his name is
Anyways I'm not trying to cause anything. Was just a joke.
I'm going to bed anyways. Night.
we know :D night
you didn't see the christmas message?? and his name is Dayton :)
Night
yeyy, i got it eventually! i did but it was 10 moths ago
;) s'alright i saved you :)
night!
for anyone reading through the comments who didn't see it... or would like to see it again (don't tell christine i've been through the archives)
here is the link - http://www.sidepodcast.com/2008/12/25/an-alternate-christmas-message/
lol :D
ahh. hello pootle
?
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Christine
i don't know why but that's just reminded me about the teletuby thing.....
#foramy - just in case i forget to tell you in the morning
I am not a teletuby :) hehe thanks ;)
You mean I am a figment of your imagination?
Hello all, done passing out candy and enjoying my own candy...beer
and watching the world series
heya :)
I wonder what team he is buying. Toyota?
Hey Joe.
I complely forgot to get any. Thankfully I had no 'visitors', yet it also means none for me...
That is tough and something that there is no real way of sorting.
sweets I mean, not beer, I had beer
I got a few Baby Ruth bars, had one or two trick or treaters, so I get the rest.....my lucky day!!!
the brawn glows in the dark!!!!
kinda...
I bet in the past you have told him to give you space. He has. - Male logic
i'm loving that the links are blue :D it makes me very happy :)
arent links always blue?
I got it
I am sure Christine said she liked the archives
a different blue
oh? maybe it's because the page looks cleaner or there is no green around... but i'm loving the blueness of sidepodcast 3.0 :D
ahem
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Christine's+Naughty+List
I think that is too tough to sort long distance. One of you needs to travel to the other, spend a month there and have lots of deep and meaningfuls...
agreed x1000
I live in an apartment building - no kids rang the door and we would not have let them in anyway.
Not that it's a big thing in Denmark anyway!
#forgavin
I got my mic problem sorted. Thanks guys ;)
I got a woman and her 2 kids come into the pub i was in earlier, they did the rounds and were quickly shooed out by the barwoman
Ahh, peace and quiet. I did dress up as a ghost. I work my old BAR Honda mechanics shirt
That being the woman at the bar, not a woman with a bar
I mean wore
Hmmmm I think the concept that this can be in any way "sorted" somehow is how this mess sprung up in the first place.
Well I am not sure what I mean by sorted. But you are only treading water in that situation until you spend some time Face to Face I think...
Unfortunately I think you just need time to get your head round how you go forward and there is nothing you or anyone else can do about it now.
Trulli has finally lost it...
photo 1
photo 2
also.. Rubens and his wife are such a cute couple
Kiss FAIL!
it's cute!
I still dig Ralfs wife
Ah he's just enjoying himself
tis rather
i've got a poster of him dontcha know ;) ;) :P :D
i think he needs a holiday... :)
When he went to see the Abu Dhabi stewards with a whole dossier on his little contretemps with Sutil in Brazil it was quite clear he had lost the plot
ooooooh dearr...
You do mean "her" right?
umm....
nope
Joe, tread carefully here dude...
*John
I've got one too, got it at Silverstone as a freeby 2 years ago
such a shame i don't have a copy of that pic you and I know so well ;-)
Roger that. Enjoy!
keeeeep going
:D
I laughed at Sutil saying he would draw him a picture of Mickey Mouse
It's a bit RG and Hanna Montana innit? :D
oh my goodness! it's nearly 2am! i must sleep! night all!! x
Same here - Dara O' Briaian is keeping me awake!
night Lou
First we had Mr C and Giggles randomly removing letters now Gavin is adding them back in. I think this is going to be some kind of competition on the Parade Lap at 10am
Night Lou
I vet Trulli was rally happy when he took his dossier to the drivers' meeting and before he got two words out someone pointed out that a couple of years ago Trulli stood up at one of those meetings and said that any driver on the outside of another had to look after themself.
Case dismissed
Night Lou
I'd like to point out that my poster is very much this type.
http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/ralf_toyo_shanghai_07.jpg
But only people like you have a memory like that!
Night
ah but he is good
Ah, well that's better - but still a bit mediocre!
It was said on the commentary this morning. First time I had heard it
Night Gavin? potentially?
Indeed!
The actual picture is alot better, i just didnt want you thinking it was some wierd picture
Eh? Do you want me to leave? ;)
That rear wing looks so low
It is weird - he looks like he is a ahead of the other car. Clearly that pic must be photoshopped!
I like the picture. I must add that in my PS3, I drive for Panasonic Toyota and have won 27 races and am in my 4th season with 1 WDC. I wish PS3 could be reality
You said "same here" as in, you must sleep, so wondered if you were going, but clearly not!
It does, even compared to the Ferrari behind.
I miss those cars :(
Earlier i was thinking about Renault and about why they're so rubbish for the past few seasons and then it hit me...
They haven't been as good since Michelin left.
Ah I see now. Well I am close to!
I heard that they were going to change their livery after ING left. I can't believe the other teams would care what their car looked like.
I am surprised they haven't changed it already. Imagine showing a prospective sponsor that and saying your name could be in the middle of this mess
Fitting that Christopher Walken Appears on TV on Halloween - that man scares me!
Good night guys and see you at 10UK for the Parade lap!
Very much so. They relied on those tyres and designed the whole car around a completely different philosophy.
Night Gavn ;) properly
Night Gavin
Night
So Max is to blame then?
I agree, the only one intersested would be McDonalds...thank you Joe Saward.
see ya
A lot of people mentioned McD's the day the car was launched
10UK is what time in US East coast?
Whoever it was that got rid of Michelin. I liked Michelin.
6am
Normally 5hr difference but we've had the DST change and I don't think you have yet?
That was Max.
Wasn't there a photshopped photo with Ronald MacDonald in the background?
I think that is on dropio somewhere
Heading off to bed too, see you all later
I beg to differ. I was at the 2005 USGP. I also went to buy tires for my truck. Michelin's were twice what Bridgestone were and offered nearly half the mileage.
Night Jackie
see ya
I've finally put my first blog entry on my wiki - it's the fuel stints for Abu Dhabi.
I like the idea of doing your blog on the wiki.
Dump him - that's too annoying. He won't change.
Rubbish. Women do this all the time too. It's a confidence thing.
I have a feeling the US gains an hour tonight? So 5am.
I thought they had another week before daylight savings. I could well be completely wrong though.
Geez! I'll be up around 0700 off to get a bagel and coffee, so hopefully I'll be able to join in. Thanks for reminding be about the changing of the clocks
By the way Steven, are you checking in on the World Series?
Montoya just tweeted it otherwise I wouldn't have known
Montoya? I hate myself for watching Talledega tomorrow just for the crashes.
I have both eyes tightly shut.
I like the idea of doing your blog on the wiki. {Comment #192}
Thank you, Steven. I figure that I can get it to run half-way reliably, it's more flexible than the old format and still offers pretty much everything a blog does, so...
I think I can risk one eye now
Much as I would like to sit up and watch the Yankees win again I have to sleep now so that I can be awake for Mr Alex Andronov's Parade Lap at 10am UK. Last year on this show Mr C made a cupcake live and Alex reckons he has something much better this year. Don't miss it.
Good night all.
right today is not beach weather so i might actually get my shopping done.
i just helped save the pandas
how? ;)
by purchasing a not cheap one made of chocolate. Eating them to save them, genius
Heheh! :D A true paradox. You managed to stay up last night?
yeah i stayed up transcribing so i wasnt even first with the weights. But it still counts because i dont follow the guy who beat me ;)
Hahaha! Last time we'll be waiting for weights... for now, anyway. :D
How much transcribing have you done? It's nothing short of amazing, probably. :D
ive done however many minutes the wiki says plus i have finished another 2 hours or so that i havent sent through yet.
That many, many minutes indeed... :D
I shall now take a nap - I want to give myself a chance to catch tonight's debrief - no work tomorrow. :D
Can't believe how excited I am for this Grand Prix - being a McLaren/Hamilton fan helps I guess! I have a feeling we'll see Button come in 3rd and then we'll have 2 Brits on the podium.
Morning :)
I followed a link from @sidepodcast on Twitter yesterday for a blog that has some fantastic graphs about qualifying times and fuel adjusted qualifying - anyone got the link to that blog? I'm sure I've heard it mentioned on the podcast so I'm asking you all for your help.
Errm Gavin's blog?
Was this it? http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/
That's the one, thanks Allison. I want to link to it in a blog post but couldn't remember what it was called or where it was! Thanks :D
I would be lying if I said I didn't go to three chocolate shops today. I have lots of parade lap snacks :D
I'm timing the roast dinner so I'll be all fed by the time the parade lap comes round, though there is some chocolate cheesecake in the fridge...
I put my good morning in the wrong day again didn't I... It's too early...
Now begins the mad scrabble of preparation for the parade lap. As they would say if they were doing the rating for this prep work: Contains scenes of mild peril.
yet it always looked so polished :)
Hahahaha that child popping at the climax of your song :P
Okay that could be fairly traumatic I'm not sure that's quite what I meant.
I've had a nap!
Hi McLarenFan Steve. Where are you? GMT +11 (Australia) like Amy and myself?
I'm in England - just up early thanks to my 18 month old son who is currently running round the kitchen throwing a green plastic hoop! He adores cars and often watches big portions of the GP races.
Ah.. This time I have no children present. And I'm not in a car. I think the only particularly special thing is that this one is twice as long as usual!
is there baking? are you secretly in Paris? or secretly at the C's home like they secretly were you at yours?
er, were at yours. they were not you at yours.
No, no, and sadly no.
No to that as well ;)
#sorryamy
go on, be the C's for us. Please!
:D cardy?
I am eating beetroot in a attempt to bring Heikki some purple luck.
Alison... I know you were talking about that weird stomach cramp feeling earlier when you feel that something is wrong and you are stressing about it. And that sometimes the feeling comes first and then you have to work out what's wrong.
In our household we call the feeling "feeling a bit squelini". A Squelini is actually the place that they fix gondolas in Venice. But I liked the word, and it totally fits that nervous stomach feeling to my mind, so I borrowed it.
There was just an almighty noise just then as the shower curtain fell down. The noise wasn't from the curtainy part but the pole hitting the bath and so on! Jumped out of my skin!
Hahahah... I see a lot of Apple critics saying things like this these days:
But it is actually an extract from a review of the very first Mac by John C. Dvorak on 19 Feb. 1984... Here it is in slightly wider context:
a mouse? what is this mouse? useless!
i have watched Australian Idol this year for the first time in about 6 seasons and the only person I actually liked just quit. Time to turn off the TV :D
To be fair, I don't think I have a mouse in the house at the moment.... It was obviously just a fad!!
That would have scared me, then I would have been paranoid about burgalers all morning! Better you than me!
I pretty sure X Factor has gotten even worse than that...
So I hope you are all brewing up some lovely Giggles'll fix it requests and of course your predictions for the race....
I don't think I'll be able to watch it - darned iPod Touch...
Is that the only internet enabled device you have?
my internet has been throttled and I am scared I'll have too much buffering :(
computer doesn't want to play internet, apparently...
Booo!
seconded. I'll try and get to work later...
typo....I'll try and get IT to work later!
:)
Morning all.
Morning :)
Good morning
Watching F1 06 DVD. forgotten what Schumacher was until now!
Hehe. It seems ages ago, no? Just 3 years ago, actually...
Hello, everyone. :D
How are we all?
Nursing a bit of a cough, but fine overall. :) Can't believe the season ends today. Oh well, the offseason will give me a chance to do other non-F1 things. Like shop for Christmas. :D
It is a throughtly dark, cold, wet and windy day outside. And I am feeling surprisingly agitated... Busy busy busy
Did you see I saved a panda? I bought this one. When I took off its clothes it looked like this.
So when you say saved, you actually mean you ate a panda.
but it was $8. $4 of that went to helping pandas erm, mate.
Ah, well that's alright then. Brownie points for you.
First she eats a chocolate panda and now she gets a Brownie as a reward... Is this the mythical perpetual chocolate machine? ;)
I quite fancied the stuffed panda that had a chocolate one in its paws. But it was $54 which is a little extreme for a small soft toy.
It is miserable weather, isn't it? I'm sure yesterday it was like being back in summer and today... it's definitely November.
I have to go to bed now. I'm gonna miss the parade lap and race I'm afraid :(
Erm a bit of a Freudian slip there. Alas I mean work.
but it's the end of the season. can't even catch the race itself?
sleep and work seem very different. a shame. oh well. later, alison.
It really did switch over fast. Katherine and I went on a nice walk in the afternoon and everything. Now there would be no chance!
I don't think the weather wants me to go outside today. Oh well, more of an
excuse to watch the race! :)
So has anyone got any predictions for the race? You don't have to be watching the parade lap to get your predictions in :)
just remembered we've never done a skype call from our temporary studio.
25 mins to figure it out...
:D Lemme see:
1. Hamilton
2. Button
3. Barrichello
4. Webber
5. Raikkonen
6. Vettel
7. Trulli
8. Rosberg
hamilton's gotta win. Best all weekend!
Awwww okay. I'm gonna say that despite my better judgement, I'm going to support my favourite Sebastian.
whoops...
not that I want him to win...
I predict I will fall into a sugar induced coma because I went macaron shopping, and then there is the panda, and then I bought another block of chocolate too.
if you refresh: http://sidepodcast.com/livecommenting/
alex's ustream channel is now embedded.
actual f1 related predictions: Podium shall be both McLarens and a Kimi. I don't know how Heikki will get up there, but it'll happen.
Watching the 2001 British GP now.
As Mercedes celebrate the dominance of their F1 engine this season, spare a thought for the late Paul Morgan, who was instrumental to the founding of Ilmor with Mario Illien (ILlien-MORgan).
The F1 engine arm of Ilmor eventually became a fully-Mercedes owned operation, and is enjoying the biggest success it's had in a decade. I can now truly say that Ilmor/Mercedes F1 have well and truly bounced back from Morgan's death 8 years ago.
Any Giggle'll fix it suggestions?
can you get our skype working?
fix it so my podium happens please :D
ah...
tough one...
it may require 17 retirements. I'm sure thats not beyond Giggles.
Good morning Sidepodcast chums.
Just reading the press conference from yesterday and Webber seems to have been on particularly fine form!
On their chances against Lewis Hamilton: "Easy. We are not stopping tomorrow. We don't do a pit stop. We just put the option on for the last lap and we jump them like that, so pretty straightforward."
On whether he had any negative comments about Abu Dhabi: "We're paid lots of money to say good stuff, obviously. You know that we get backhanders to say that it's a great track, so we're not going to say anything negative. The deal is done before we all arrive, so 20 drivers, we get a backhander, easy from there! It's a great facility, it's a good track"
:-D
haha, just like Mark!
HAHA! This one made me laugh out loud. :D
And Lewis follows up by telling Will Buxton:
Nice to see he has some sense of humor too. :D
I liked the comment Lewis made next to the journalist who asked the question: "you should try and get in on it!"
beat ya by 11 seconds. :P
oh, wasn't Will Buxton, but even so. ;)
Watching US GP 06. So that's what a crash looks like!
Roll, Nick, Roll! :D Also paved the way for JPM's exit from F1 to NASCAR.
Can Giggles fix it so that I don't get diabetes. All the Skittles, Jaffas, Bullets etc are gone. I have real (santa colours on the label) coke left though.
*Bounces in*
Mooooorning all.
my prediction was correct, I just ate 3 macarons and now I want to die. Silly French people making tasty sweet things.
Mr C is talking to the Skype Lady again. I am starting to get jealous.
morning RG, morning all
He does talk to her a lot!
shes such a homewrecker.
:P
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/11/01/live-the-parade-lap-extravaganza/
she is a bit repetitive though
silly JPM, everyone knows you don't take out Kimi. Especially when hes your team mate.
Afternoon
howdy.
enjoy the race?
ummm, honestly, no. but i'm happy because the off-season has started!
hi jon
*bounces into the daily*
haha, it does have an odd feeling i agree. i didnt look that exciting, just watched the highlights
TBH, I am happy that the season has ended. We need a break from F1 I think so that we can get excited again...
I agree.
Nice article about Tom Wheatcroft from Joe.
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/11/01/tom-wheatcroft/
I'm strongly considering leaving a voicemail message for the Debrief, but I've never done it before. How's this work?
i agree... kinda... but i love every second of it anyway... i hope we have another season where Jenson is competitive..
i suppose each off season that passes brings me closer to hopefully one day being part of the f1 circus?...
can we agree on competitive but not walking away with the first part/any part of the season? and having less amazing luck than last time
if you have skype, you can search for sidepodcast and call for free.
otherwise 0121 28 87225 is the number you need, and leave amessage after the beep. make as many attempts as you like, but the limit is 10 mins.
yes we can. i'd love him to get a second championship but i'd like the wins to be spread out over the year :)
bizarrely, as every season passes, i'm grateful i'm not :)
Either phone 0121 28 87225 or find sidepodcast on Skype. Phone and you will hear a meaadage from Christine. At the bleep leave your message. If you are not happy with anything you say just start again or go back a sentence or two and Christine will work her editing magic on it. You can take as many attempts as you like and she will only play the best one.
righto, back shortly.
iPlayer FAIL
Formula 1: 2009: The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is no longer available. Programmes are available for a limited number of days after broadcast. Why?
Argh. They put up abu Dhabi pn the iPlayer and now it's gone again
Jon beat me to it. I was trying to get clips for you from it but meh.
Stupid bbc.
oh. maybe by the time i get through uni i will have changed my mind. but at this exact moment in time i would do anything to be part of this amazing sport... of course this may change when i go to a gp..
(not here, "researching")
Well, with both McLarens, Brawns, Ferraris going to be competitive, and likleyhood of Renault and Red Bull being awesome next season, I think it will be close.
i'm sure it will be put up soon..
Christine are you around?
researching what?
Ahh, I used 7 minutes of that time :)
(and back to "researching")
Someone just made a booboo somewhere. Give it 30 minutes or so.
Nevertheless I managed to get the amazing intro
Quality will improve in a few minutes... youtube processing and all that...
Thanks for the help. Now to set up Skype properly.....
The total unknown solution of time and space.
Or the American West.
I don't see Rnault doing anything next season
I believe my bias may have snuck in there.
(defo gone now)
It'll be interesting to see how McLaren get on with everyone agreeing not to use KERS next season - it was their great equaliser this season.
we'll have three WDC and one almost-WDC in the two 'top teams', a WDC and a will-be-WDC in the other two teams that should be strong. It HAS to be a great year...
I think the effect of KERS is exaggerated.
i take it christine is busy doing post race stuff, if anyone is sticking around can you please please please make sure that this is my last post before the debrief, i have lots of work to get done :) so if i pop up please shoo me away again :)
Thank you and see you all later! :) x
GO AWAY!!!!!
SHOO!!!!
bye, don't jump all day! :-)
All, I have posted my race review Here
I'd love to hear your comments.
Sadly it's image light at the moment as PicApp haven't uploaded anything yet. I'll edit that later!
Thank you :)

Oh dear, that went both better and worse than expected!
Sidepodcast now knows I rambled despite having actually typed a loose agenda and bullet points to mention.
Yay they fixed the WiFi!
Also managed to get coms in English for most of the race... never been so pleased to hear Mr legard!
Atmosphere here was great... watching f1 in a pub rocks!
Need to do it more often!
Race wasn't all that amazing, but it was great in parts.... what an ending and the track looked awesome!
That's me done for now, I have to focus on producing a half-decent dinner and practicing for the Grand Prix Legends racing I do, so be seeing ya guys n gals! :D
#fr
Having kept themselves in the top 10 at the start of the season, Force Honda B-Team have struggled to stay in the top 25 but have now dropped down onto the lowest of the lows....32nd.
The recent drop in performance can be put to the lack of motivation of a certain K.Raikkonen and F.Nando, due to this both drivers are scheduled to be leaving their current teams for the 2010 season.
Speaking of the 2010 Season, (It's gone a bit) Piquet Racing have now finished the 2010 season in 7th place, gaining 2 places.
After a dissapointing season, both teams are looking to the positives that they have improved greatly and hope to be title contenders for the upcoming season.
#fr Congratulations to Nick for winning FR 2010!!
#fr
Despite missing the Abu Dhabi deadline, Scuderia Badoer finishes 4th overall. Team manager Journeyer is reasonably satisfied with the result and is optimistic the new rules will allow him to fully contend for the 2010 title.
#fr
Seconded. :)
Please use the latest update for the 2010 set - I slightly updated it. ;)
#fr
I have no idea how I did... if I won the 2010 league its all thanks to Pk. If I didn't its all flav's fault!
May he be able to successfully defend it from 2009 rules champ Kathi and the rest of the field. ;)
You won, Nick! :D No movement in the top 5.
whooooooop! :D
well done kathi too!
Joe's GP+ cover: Seb's Abu DULL-bi. ;)
love for Joe -20!
Hehe :)
I thought the race was good... better than barca and nurbergring....
Good.crowd too... hope it stays like that!
It looked great!
Yes!!!! Go Kobayashi!!
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79960
Watching the Porsche supercup race... its awesome!
I'm watching GP2 Asia. Very racy drivers!
just. watched that... was good but this is madness!
i'll see if I can catch that on Eurosport on the other telly. will try tomorrow. ;)
so much overtaking!
#blamethecars!
I see you've begun to upload videos, Lukeh. Excellent. :D
I'll upload more as soon as the BBC re-uploads the race! So annoying because it was up... then it just disappeared.
It still hasn't come back? Boo.
Hahaha, and now this
YouTube is down for maintenance and will be back shortly.
Well, my video's still loading. :D
It's the gods of the internets telling you to stop!
Nooo it's the Elders of the Internet. They live in Big Ben you know. ;)
Here's a nice game to play:
F1 has reached the end of another decade - its 6th. In fact, F1 has just completed its 60th season.
So with that, do name who you think are:
#F1manoftheyear
#F1manofthedecade
My picks are:
#F1manoftheyear - Jenson Button
#F1manofthedecade - Ross Brawn
#F1manoftheyear - Jenson Button
#F1manofthedecade - Ross Brawn
urm... #sorryJourneyerforpredictablysameanswers
thats really hard to answer. im not sure i can.
however i shall try (to offend as many people as possible ;) )
#f1manoftheyear - Sebastian Bourdais
#f1manofthedeade - Kamui Kobayashi
Anyone care to argue? :D
:D Let's see what others have to say - I'm sure other names will pop up, especially for man of the decade.
Neat idea
#F1manoftheyear - Ross Brawn
#F1manofthedecade - Bernie Ecclestone
I won't bother. :D Kobayashi was definitely the man of the last 2 races, though.
I said it earlier
Kobayashi for FIA president
Thanks, RG. Bernie's been running F1 for ages now... He's outlasted both Piquets, from the looks of it. Both Villeneuves, too.
#F1manoftheyear - Adrian Newey
#F1manofthedecade - Ross Brawn
(and with that I leave to make my lunch. see you)
Not Steven Roy, then?
Me. Reasons already known.
It would be a close run contest for sure
#F1manoftheyear - Ross Brawn
#F1manofthedecade - Ron Dennis
oooh, nice picks there. Newey also deserves much credit for catching and passing Brawn on pace.
see ya, guille.
I also vote him
#F1manofthedecade1990s and
#F1manofthedecade1980s
Thanks, Gavin. Ron's really gone through the trenches this decade, hasn't he? Twas nice to see him in Abu Dhabi - suspiciously, the first race post-Max.
I'm actually waiting for a couple of big names to pop up (which haven't yet). Wanna see who'll say them. ;)
#F1manoftheyear - Nelsinho Piquet cos he got rid of Mankini-wearing Flavio.
#F1manofthedecade - Ross Brawn cos of the number of World Championship he has had a part in.
James blog is up!
I would link but I'm still in the pub!
Thanks, Rich. The Piquets made the headlines for all the wrong reasons this year. But they did take Flavio down.
Rose water tinted spectacles ;)
i am so glad a journalist said that. expected them to be spouting bbc levels love for the place.
cheers sir.
Tis a shame to miss the final live race debrief of the year
Have fun
I plugged this earlier, but that was in the middle of the f1 forum so here it is again ;) http://f1loonie.wordpress.com/2009/11/01/21-random-facts-about-the-2009-f1-season/
I don't think you'll miss much race chatter, really.
The organizers of Abu Dhabi must be very confident that sea-level rise is less of an issue than climate scientists think. With a 2m sea-level rise (which is just a little bit of the Greenland Cap) the map looks like this for Yas Marina.
http://flood.firetree.net/?ll=24.4931,54.5094&z=4&m=2
But scientists now think the Ice Cap is much more sensitive to changes than previous thought.
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/09/090916133508.htm
He he, but the lights...
Too much conflicting information and disinformation to make further comment
Please not to be taken seriously - I just do not like monopolies and in terms of F1 it was a cash cow for the mankini-wearing guy. One manager should only manage one driver and should NOT otherwise be connected to a team.
Mind you, without Flav, we might not have gotten Alonso in F1.
F1manoftheyear - Ross Brawn
F1manofthedecade - err, arn't you a year early?
F1manoroftheyear - Richard "we want to sponser a backmarker" Branson
Less conflicting than the public is lead to believe - just simply more complicated and therefore more easily mis-interpreted when writing for the public.
technically, yes (it should be 2001-2010), but as most people insist that the decade begins in a year ending with 0 (in this case, 2000), i'm just on time.
The ideal circuit for a Porsche and for F1 are not the same
Sure Flav did push him. But Peter Sauber essentially found both Kimi and Massa.
*gutted
GP2 cars raced well at Abu Dhabi, too, though.
true. but even so, it's Alonso who's won the most titles on the current grid.
That will teach them for building a track without any elevation changes.
Surly, without Stoddart, we might not have gotten Alonso in F1?
Mind you, that track actually has more elevation changes than a Valencia, for example. Or a Singapore.
True as well. But Flav paid for Alonso's seat.
but think it could be really good for the Power Boat series. I just had not idea how much land is engulfed with just a two meter rise - its staggering.
i'm not too surprised - it's an man-made island, after all.
The problem I have with Abu Dhabi, is the same problem I have with China and Malaysia - the place is so big, it make the cars look small, and slightly inconsequential.
I thought it was going to look more spectacular than it did - actual I thought Singapore as a spectacle was more impressive.
Just seen the pre race parade... banding and jens having a chat!
I have to agree. The only part that looked spectacular was the hotel. The rest just looked like nondescript modern racing circuit
good call.
The Evening/night timewas a much better way to do a night race - the change in light conditions made the night conditions much more noticable. Plus the cars looked great in the late evening light.
Agreed. Singapore skyline FTW.
@me Your real-time Doohickey does not work with KDE's Konqueror browser - just in case you did not know.
i didn't. will take a look see.
Debrief at 7 SPT?
exactly. more likely 7:30pm GMT
Ish.
Okily dokily. I've got to get on with some work so will be back then.
(isn't here)
this is funny but poor Jenson
SHOO.
*runs away*
he he
thanks ;)
When you see the F1 cars passing beneath that massive wing shaped pit/media centre/grandstand thing in China - it looks very impressive, but it does not exactly get the blood racing does it?
And the big structures only serve to make the cars look slower on TV.
Yes. The venue did not overshadow the race.
I did the normal trick of changing the browser identification but with no success. It looks an awkward browser so why do they not include Firefox pre-installed?
I'm afraid I am not going to be able to join for the debrief :(
But hope you have a lovely time.
If I were looking for let's say the debrief from last year's last race, how would I go about finding it?
from abu dhabi?
grr katherine grr
Interestingly it was on the same day last year (or rather the first Sunday of November)
I know... Well you haven't done a good enough job of getting her into F1 ;)
No, from Brazil.
ahh, rebuilding the seasons page at the moment. that's where you will eventually find it. will look for you now.
This has reminded me of something I wanted to say I have 3 times, since the relaunch, hit archives. Found the column I want, say "posts", and then wanted to press "more" at the bottom. Or click somewhere to get a list of all posts.
aw cmon, mr c. :P hehe.
Aww come on Kathi - you worked so hard for this, you deserve to be applauded for it...
Ah no then it's fine, I was just worried I'm too stupid.
It's Alex who'll miss it, not Kathi.
Kathi: http://www.sidepodcast.com/2008/11/02/live-speechless-gonna-be-a-short-show/
Thanks. How did you find it?
thanksyou :)
you are forgiven.
Stop playing on the internet and work
Why Alex, Why???
Go to the archives page and search for year and month?
Do you really want to know?
I went to http://www.sidepodcast.com/archive/
I then chose November 2008
And then I pressed read previous. And then I changed the number in the address bar from 2 to 8 because I remembered that there were 8 pages of articles in November. Or rather I remembered that the 8th Page had the debrief on it. I remember a lot of things.
But of course you could page back threw the pages until you got to page 8.
There are only a few posts there since me is fiddling
The BBC may have put a positive spin on things but Joe looks like he is telling it like it is
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/11/01/coming-soon-to-a-computer-near-you/
I take that back. I am an idiot after all :D
I don't remember how to spell "through" though.
ah-ha... he should've blogged every edition!
#fr
LCM Aléman is jubilant with a season-best score of 609 points. Between Vettel's excellent win, Heidfeld's impressive performance and decent supporting work from Rosberg, the team will be celebrating hard in the streets of Abu Dhabi tonight. (We will conveniently ignore Sutil's performance).
Conversely, LCM Barato had its worst result since Spain with a mere 429 points. The team manager cited a paperwork problem preventing Alguersuari from being replaced with Fisichella. Buemi was the only decent performer in the whole squad...
LCM Caro had its worst result since Italy, with only 338 points. Hamilton's brake problem sunk the team's chances without trace.
LCM Dragon's worst result since Belgium came today, with 504 points not meeting its usual high standards. Neither Hamilton nor Alonso covered themselves with glory, leaving Vettel and Button to do all the hard work.
LCM Fire Lizard had a terrible time too. 369 points was the worst score since Belgium, with most of the points coming from Button...
The LCM teams wish to express their delight that Kathi is the World Individual Champion and that the Sidepodcast League is the World Team Champion. They deserve their success immensely and there is pride that LCM at least gave the cream of the Sidepodcast league someone to beat.
Katherine made the point that I had spent from 7-10
"preparing for the parade lap"messing around on Sidepodcast. Then broadcast for 2 hours, and then watched racing until 4:15 pm. Then I did chores, but not things for Katherine, things like "sorting post", and "filing", how thrilling. And you know, she wasn't thrilled by the prospect of me disappearing again now for the rest of the night.
@Mr C
Did you see the e-mail I sent you earlier?
Mr C, you have a lot to learn about retweetability.
i did. i have an email mental block. shall reply now.
i deserved that.
he he :)
Tell her that she would enjoy joining in the comments and it will help her get to know people before she goes to Spa. That is bound to convince her
There is no need for a reply. I just wanted to make sure it was something you had done without realising
i think next year, the parade lap can find room for a fourth host.
I totally understand - I have had this conversation a few times this year, in fact!
#fr
Finally, the experiment into different ways of playing Fantasy Racers has yielded the following conclusions:
The best way for me to play Fantasy Racers in terms of results is for me to use my brain and look at how people are performing before selecting drivers.
The second-best way was to pick all the Germans. It is not clear whether this is because Germans were good and undervalued this year or if non-logic-based methods of selection in general are good.
Picking all the cheap drivers was the third-best approach. It was not much worse than picking all the Germans as an approach.
The second-worst method was to choose favourites - especially if your favourites spend most of the season near the back of the grid anyway ;)
Worst of all was the method of always picking the priciest drivers. They're expensive for a reason... ...over-hype would appear to be the main one.
I think that will work, but better off season, when I haven't spent the whole day doing F1 I think I could get her to join us for the evening.
he he :)
You mean Katherine hassles you as well. Does she have some kind of secret agenda to sabotage sidepodcast? :)
hahahaha
Germans do well in all sports, so that's not a bad tactic!
more background on the post race marriage proposal:
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/11/01/now-that-is-the-way-to-propose/
:D :D
Mr C... I think the off season is going to involve some python for you... Have just been reading about wave robots (while Katherine is making dinner)
our drop.io integration is written in python. i don't like it much though.
Its that or Java. I suppose its server Java and you like that better from memory.
i do. 100% preferable.
will get cracking this week.
http://wave-samples-gallery.appspot.com/
Will go to bed now - debrief just way too late. Enjoy yourselves, night. ;)
Night Journeyer
It's not that the debrief is too late, it is that you are in the country. Move to Europe with Amy.
*wrong country.
I'm heading off now... Have fun.
Last note Stew says we will get the results of SofaF1 tonight! Ooooh...
So I will be back ish.
Do i have time to make pancakes?
Theres always enough time to make pencakes
Pancakes too
Pencakes? Do they have ink them?
Lat estimate was 7:30
Thats a definite yes then ta
Hey, evening all
Is the Debrief still on for 7?
Still writing it at the moment.
:)
#Blamesutil That is good though as I'm cooking dinner and it'll be ready in 15ish mins.
When do you think the Debrief will be on?
We are still hoping 7:30.
Christine, you got mail.
I try and stick around for it...
I'm trying to do a Race Summary for my Driver Consistency post, but I just don't know what to say!
"One of the highlights was when the hotel lit up in orange, a stark contrast to the dullness being produced on track..."
;)
:)
lukeh, we need a voicemail!
What of?
how bad the race was.
Oki doki
oops, skype fail. could you try again?
It cut me off halfway through on the phone :(
i was logged in. am out now. sorry.
I'll tell you how bad the Abu Dhabi race was; I got though just over 100 pages of my Williams book (i.e. I finished it) and reached page 18 of "50 Facts That Should Change the World"...
I heard a rumour that Mr C snorts when he laughs too much, and so theres a funny-ometer on the voicemail, so it stops you from being snort-funny. Clearly you were on fire
Laugh-snorting is dangerous. Happens when you least suspect it. I did it the other day and couldn't believe how much of a weirdo I'd made myself out to be.
Hehe :P tis done now anyways!
I have left you a much more sober voice mail! Hope it's not too late.
Bloody hell Lukeh ... Can I quote you on that?
I find that once you break your laugh-snort-duck, it keeps happening. Boo
Go for it :P i just kinda made it up on the spot though
We're just doing it now :)
OK. I have just finished my pizza. You may start the show any time now.
Why does pizza always smell the same regardless of the topping?
Lukeh, did you ever upload that video of Tim and the Pitstop fail?
Yay
I was going to but F1 on the iPlayer went up.... and then back down again and hasn't been back up since so I can't get it till it returns :(
I did get the Muse intro though but by the time that had uploaded, the race had gone off the iPlayer.
*sits in this lovely thread*
ahhhh, why can't Sunday last forever?
We should skip to Tuesday, and then Williams announcement will never happen
it's a question i have been asking myself for ages...
i suppose i should come down from the top of the moon soon... too.. it's kinda nice up here.. we have a track that's awesome too!! no lava lamps, i mean hotels though..
The low air density must mean that the cars can overtake easier too :D
exactly :)
Awww boooo did I just miss the debrief? :(
sadly :( how are you this evening Alison?
You have no luck at all just now. It started an hour late and it has literally just finished
I'm alright. Pretty tired tbh. Also soaking wet. Glad to be home.
OK guys,
While I have been watching the F1 today, my wife has watched about 6 hours of a Danish mini-series called 'Matador' (it's quite good...)
I turned to her and said "How can you watch 6 hours of the same thing? Wouldn't you get bored?"
She turned to me and said "Well you watched F1 all day :D"
She wins.
she's not katherine is she?
I thought the Danish did pigs not bulls
You watched F1 all day. You clearly win!
No, because I was bored out of my skull and she wasn't!
That bad eh? I didn't watch it. I had 5live on in my office but I kept getting distracted by actual work.
'Matador' means 'Business Magnate' (I have no idea why) and it's an old show about a dude who moves to a small town with nothing and becomes a succesful businessman. It's also the time period that makes it interesting - it's set between 1930-1945.
Matador is also what we call Monopoly here.
I doubt it!
Shame on you Steven! you said you'd shoo me again after the debrief!! ;)
i'm odd to get work done... i'll speak to you lovely people later... or tomorrow...
Thanks for all the incredible work you've done Mr and Mrs C and thanks to the comments for helping me get through this boring race ;)
lots of love! x
It was the most boring race ever. I actually zoned out and missed 15 laps because the comments were more interesting than the race.
Byee :)
Come January given the opportunity to watch another race in Abu Dhabi I challenge you to say no!
It's amazing what you learn on sidepodcast. Here I was think it was about a guy who fought walking bacon
Niight miss lou
I have hours of other motorsports to keep me entertained in the offseason, as well as my blog and the sidepodpanels. It's all good :D
SHOO!!!
GO AWAY!!
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/11/01/the-race-is-over/
It is amazing that such an amazing venue produced such a boring race. I think I woke twice.
Heh, simple!
Ok everyone I need to go.
Thanks again for today - SPC makes F1 a lot more fun.
See you in the comments in the week.
I might settle down to watch some 24.....
I like Joe's headline
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/11/01/coming-soon-to-a-computer-near-you/
I posted this during the race earlier, a quick example of how Grosjean takes a chicane
Thats how boring the race was!
your response is ace too. i don't have that much history to call upon, but i don't remember a worse end to the season that this one.
That's a football manager link
Wrong link. Thats my Football manager transfers.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/wmcap-wmv
Is it moderated already? I didn't even check
Who pays £16 million for Darren Fletcher anyways?
You sold Nani and Anderson?
I had 10 first team midfielders!
I actually found the install of the new (launched 30 October) KDE Netbook Remix more interesting - which is what I actually did this afternoon.
Sorry, I missed the end of the live show.
What did I miss
Me going all teary and Mr/Mrs C being unable to end positively.
At least he hit the second apex
Are we having a reflective debrief next week or do I deserve a slap for suggesting it?
There will be a replay of the live show available tonight or tomorrow and you can watch the bit you missed
don't cry, surely it wasn't that bad!
When did it finish?
Right now there is no plan for next week. Maybe there will be a show but maybe not. There is a season review in the near future so that wil be reflective
Pretty much all the pics from this race are a damn long shot of a small car with the stupid hotel in the background! :(
I am all teary and so was Nick in the last couple of laps - I noticed his times dropped and he admitted it was difficult to control the emotions.
I complained during the race about the TV directors. Nothing unusual in that though since I have been complaining about them for years. Like in Singapore they were far more interested in doing their bit for the tourist board than covering a sport.
I hope there will be a debrief next week. I'll get bored in the off-season...
but it did change coloured and even blinked!
I really don't care for coloured lights. All that money and no firework show - even though it's the end of the season?
You won;t get bored on here, trust us
There are shows most weekends. Christine and Mr C may havethe occasional week off but there will be Debriefs and sidepodpanels and who knows what else to get you through the winter
Coloured lights are not groundbreaking!
Especially when someone points out that they are arranged in an approximately phallic shape and that is all you can see when you look at it
I hope not...
132 days to go, 132 days till 2010 F1, 132 days till the very small man talks about rubbish and Jenson will win. 132 days till F1 2010
but the hotel is like the fireworks lots of bright lights - I actually thought it was a bit cheesy. I am not sure I am going to complain about Valencia as I think this was more boring. At least at Singapore you seem to have closer shots so the cars looked gorgeous in the lighting.
Architects are very proud if they buildings have an organic virile look. Certainly not as phallic as 30 St Mary Axe
Over the next few weeks I'll indluge myself back into the amazing F1 Yearbooks I get every christmas time then get fascinated by the new one, which will be AWESOME as it'll have lots of Brawn :D and maybe a introduction written by Ross Brawn!!!
I managed to cock things up at Blanchimont when I was 2nd in the race. I'd overtaken 2 cars on the first lap, and had an awesome setup for the car that was the perfect sweet spot. So I'm gonna park my backside here for the next couple of hours to drown my sorrows.
I reckon there's a load of race series which I can indulge in over the winter and look back on from this year. I reckon DTM and V8 Supercars would be a good starting point. Plus, I might just put in a pre-order for the 2009 Season Review DVD sometime soon.
@Gavin did you get your persistent USB of Ubuntu Netbook Remix working?
Umm, sort of. I ended up using Mint on my Netbook too ;)
Scott...
This just came up on my Facebook feed...i got very confused...
Scott Woodwiss became a fan of Jenson Button and Dislike Button!
How can you both like and dislike Button ;)
uhm I sort of accidentally recorded something. http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/names-wav
The dislike button thing is to do with a Facebook feature. I don't hate Jenson at all, honest!
I knowwwww, am just messing ;)
Interesting cos Mint is really a desktop with no optimising for Netbooks. I download Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala Netbook Remix but with the KDE desktop (Kubuntu)- it has quite a few problems so I would not advice. It looks nice but on the functionality side there are some problems.
My main problem was finding a persistent version that I could get the wifi working with. Mint works with everything in the Acer Aspire and I like the interface, so I'll stick with it :D
evening! what an awesome race! *
ok i have been drinking, but defiantly top 5 of the season in my book!
Seriously?
Really?
No, seriously...
sizzly!
Nick, if I didn't know you any better...
1) he's been drinking
2) the atmosphere was clearly better than in our front rooms ;)
Nick! :D Glad you're erm merry. I tried to send you a message on the wiki. I don't know if it worked.
You really must have had too much to drink.
A race is always going to be better in person, but as soon as he watched it on TV as a race he has to realise it was an absolute turkey of a race
With a cool hotel
It had an awesome ending... half the bar were shouting, the other half were too into it to speak!
plus it looked awesome!
That's good I thought it might be a bit slow. But I use Pardus which is also a desktop not optimised for netbooks so why am I surprised. Kubuntu Remix dissapointing. Well if anythings fo wrong with your windows you have a safety door with your persistent drive.
I watched it on tv!
which new event was better then? :P
oooh interesting! thankyou
All of them. Seriously
Abu Dhabi was the worst race this year.
I thought we agreed it look part of a gentleman's anatomy.
Alison would you need to rent sheets from the camping site as well?
Absoloute rubbish!
Alright, second worst race at max.
How was valencia better? istanbull?
sepang and shanghai had downpoors!
I can't wait till Nick hears my voicemail ;)
Made it exciting
Thanks Kathi :-)
I will practice my Hülkenberg...
No. Definitely not.
Kathi is awesome!
(But she didn't try and pronounce Qatar or Barca ;) )
It was better than silverstone!
okay. Bad experiences?
you're in a minority of one there good chap.
How?
wiki? err... i will look!
What were the options for Qatar? And Mr C is just wrong about Barca.
Alcohol is good then? I can't complain though. I did tell you my fluffy boy would win.
It's a minority of two
Nick and Bernie's bank account
I loved it!
You didn't love the race. You loved the race being in your back yard.
Where was the racing?
i do not doubt that for a second.
I've never seen a race where the comments were so distracted! Even Crofty and Ant were chatting on stuff not related to the race!
:D
I have to say I didn't mind it. I only listened while working though. I'd have been happier if it had been won fair and square. Dunno what McLaren have done to break their car.
Best race ever!
Hehe love it! the ending is brilliant!
Only because the leading car broke down.
Because...?
Doing donuts after a win = awesomeness x 1000!
no. vettel was matching lewis easy.
I dunno... I think Seb had a hell of a chance anwyway the way he was going
Nooooo! He got past in the stop as per usual..... :P
I assume it was for hotel related purposes. In that case, I agree, it was the best race ever.
It would have been a great race had Lewis not had that problem - it sucked the life out of it.
Yes....Hamilton did do a stop and Vettel did pass him...
Except Hamilton stopped FOR THE ENTIRE RACE
;)
yes but has fluffy boy actually overtaken this year - sure Lewis was not pulling away but we do not know for how long he was having problems.
not sure. i think lewis was battling for 3rd/4th.
It looked so good... waiting for somone to crash in the pitlane... kobyashi tearing the field apart... the beer... button vs webber at the end... the sunset... the red wine... the awesomely long straight... the sheesha... the sliding around at the end...
I guess its just me ;)
100%.
Not sure if I can trust your judgement ;)
He might have overtaken through pit stops - no way on the race track - how many good overtakes were there?
i don't want to burst your bubble nick, i'm glad you're happy.
it is just you.
No offence, he passed one person on track, and was slightly quicker than a few people
2x in brazill... i almost fainted!
He overtook about 5 people last race. He came from 16th to 4th and had a better race than Jenson's that everyone is still raving about.
I have a teflon bubble... and the entire off season to prove it! ;)
Well guys, I managed to finish both posts in one day, such was my desire to move on from this dull race!
Please find attached my final driver consistency post for 2009, and I sincerely hope you like it as much as Nick enjoyed the race ;)
hehehe it was great!
:P
Major BBC fail tonight with putting the race up me thinks. It went up for a little while and hasn't returned. I just want to make some clips :(
Just that the one persons is the World Champion to be a=nd driving a Brawn - it was pretty amazing - but then I do not think the Toyota is such a bad car. He also beat Trulli his team mate.
where's my doohickey filter?
Well no, how often does overtaking happen on track at the front of the field though? The only example I can think of all season is Kimi past Fisi and that was safety car influenced.
weren't they on different strategies? like kobs, fat jenson?
-teflon bubble ;)
*light kobs, fat jenson
Oh deary me. Really has been a lot of wine eh?
Something like that, and Jenson made a mistake or took the corner all wrong didn't he?
Yes and actually I think one stop is not as fast if you analyse the results - so that makes it more impressive.
Just out the pit with freezing tyres I think and yeah missed his braking zone as he was under pressure I think.
First laps and outlaps do not count as proper overtaking moves anyway!
It's late. Good night everyone.
Night Kathi.
Night Kathi :)
It was a genuine overtake and Jenson slightly missed his braking point and I think went to deep. It was only his second race you should be pleased that Timo's replacement beat Jarno.
Night.
Byee.
I like the freezing tyres that are hot enough to bake a pizza.
Jenson was on his outlap. I'm with Gavin in that it can never count.
That kind of thing is always helpful
Then Kimi has not done many overtakes just pushes the button!
Hahahaha have we seen the BBC quiz on the 2009 season??
One of the questions you have to fill in a blank using one of three options. "Massa says BLANK robbed him of glory"
One of the options.... Smedley! How dare they even suggest that.
Night! your voicemail was awesome :D
you may not like it, but it's the truth. kobs didn't pass button solely on merit, no matter how much you really want him to have.
hehe i have messaged you back on the wiki ;)
* -abu dhabi was awesome ;)
I sense some dislike for Kamikaze Kobayashi.
Erm I'm not sure who you've drunkenly emailed but I don't think it was me.....
I shall read it when i am sober... if it is as good as the race i look forward to it :D
i think he's brilliant. i love that he's come into f1 with the attitude he has.
None. The only overtaking was when one person had a full tank and someone else had an emty
Was he ever charged for what he did to Nakajima in Brazil?
"This is how I drive, I ain't changing it cos there's nothing wrong with it, you don't like it, tough"
I clicked reply on your message... i hope thats you!
Not at all. I just don't think you deserve ultimate credit for getting past a car that's handling like an elephant.
nope. but was discussed in the drivers meeting.
What did he do wrong with that though?
The last guy that said that had got bitchslapped in driver briefings. A certain A. Senna I think.
It took up highly valuable trulli time!
Outrageous
Swerved across the race track and blocked Nakajima. That's not on.
:)
Were you even watching that race dude? He just up and rammed Nakajima off the road. Kazuki had a right to be beefed with Kamui for that, more so than Trulli was knarked at Sutil.
Nakajima shouldnt have been in the way!
It's an unwritten rule about the not moving twice thing
I'll have to watch it again, I don't remember him swerving across. Although I am tired :(
He was coming out of the pits
You could argue there is no such thing as solely on merit. No car will be equal with grip, tyre condition etc - it was plucky move and he did not botch it like Kubes did (and then blamed Buemi after the race ). How many times have we seen Sutil make a fool of himself in trying to overtake. He deserves some credit. The really sad thing is if it had been Button who did the move it would have been fantastic and mark of a champion. I would agree Button allowed the situation to arise.
He drove Nakajima off the track and into a wall at 180 mph.
Irrelevant. You NEVER chop another car in open wheel racing.
so the real question is.. why didnt he retyre? :P
Nope I still blame nakajima for it.
Nothing to do with moving once or twice, and everything to do with not ramming a guy off the road
Sadly, thats quite possibly true
It's actually written. One of the articles states: "You may move your car once to defend, and then back onto the racing line if it's safe to do so."
He has been studying Mark's driving techniques and took good notes.
As much as I'm loving this Kobayashi thingy, school in the morning. And after spenind the whole morning in gale force winds and pouring rain the cold that could have developed hasn't.
So y'kna what, gannin to bed, night all. lotsa love.
Which one
Night mate.
:D
That is a stupid rule and it was only introduced to allow Schumacher to chop people
night
Good night guys!
Thanks for making the boring race bearable!
Good night to all who are leaving
Good Night from the other Sauber fan
Alison have you got my message yet?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hH__J_ffNwE
Kazuki puts his car alongside Kamui, who then rams him. Unacceptable. He should have had points on his licence and a fine and a stern warning.
Booooo!
Yes thankyou. I meant to say. I'm very easily distracted :P
Bye
hehe no worries ;)
Sorry... I still can't see why Kobayashi's at fault... nakajima swerved across much more than Kobayashi. I'm not saying I'm wrong and you're wrong or anything, I just don't understand the blaming
As Lewis should have done at Monza 2008 when he rammed Timo of the track.
Although obviously I can see how stupidly dangerous that is
You may not believe us Nick so here is Joe's take on it
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/11/01/coming-soon-to-a-computer-near-you/
I think i agree with Lukeh here. He should have given him more room, but he wont have seen him, he didnt ram him, he moved over, he was allowed to do that
To me, the view down the straight makes it look like he's defending his position quite cautiously against a very agressive Nakajima
Nakajima could do that because he was the car behind making the overtake. That's allowed. Once he was alongside he held his line in order to take the inside at the corner. The driver under attack also has to hold their line, not drive into the path of a faster car.
(not here)
Considering he was slower and Nakajima clearly had him, he left him no room on the outside...
or am I going all trulli here?
If i had to pay a 50 quid fee for wifi at a circuit which cost that much i would be annoyed too...
He didnt drive into him, he moved over. It dosent matter if you're coming out the pits or whatever, he has a right to defend his position. Clearly it ended up in an accident but it wasnt points worthy
Here is the link to Kobayashi's overtake - he is really dicing with Jenson and Jenson had completed half a lap, so it is not all due to "freezing tyres" - yes Jenson went too deep under pressure from Kobayashi. If Alonso had done that move everyone would say that is fantastic, if Nick made the move no one who have notice because the cameras would have been elsewhere.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cAFTC4RyAs
Kobayashi moved right initially then left into Nakajima which is totally the wrong place to be since the racing line is on the right. He had no right to move left after moving right. He just chopped Nakajima. There was no room for him to move to that side of the track without Nakajima hitting him even if the move was allowed.
That's exactly the problem though. He moved over in a blocking manouvre. Blocking is not on and has been tolerated for far too long.
Why would he have moved to the inside of the corner if he was not blocking someone. That would screw up his corner speed
But his car must have been handling like a beached whale with all that fuel on board? You get closer than you'd normally be allowed to on an outlap. It's just a fact of life.
he does that at every race, sometimes more. you know very well that isn't the reason.
How is blocking not allowed?!
Anyhow bedtime for me...
in a scary hotel room... night all!
Half a lap is still too little, it takes longer thna that to get your tyres working fully
for rg:
http://www.f1minute.com/category/f1-big-picture/
You can't be serious
You're not allowed to weave in the way. You'd never have overtaking. It'd be too risky, people would just smash.
We clearly have a different definition of blocking
Night
Aww... thats kinda lovely...
Also I can see yesterdays being my wallpaper for a very long time :)
Night Nick. Drink plenty of water :P
True.. but i dont remember him being that harsh on valencia which was far worse..
There is a fine line between defending and blocking, and that line was blurred by the likes of Senna and Schumacher so much that the younger drivers thought it okay to swerve across the track in the way they did. It isn't. That causes accidents.
You're definition of block is weaving, my definition of blocking is defending
You cannot seriously believe that is why he wrote that. Every single person in the comments was bored by the race and Christine and I got into a long discussion about how refuelling being banned will make racing better or worse. No-one made any attempt to suggest they were enjoying the race.
For the first time ever I totally zoned out of the race and missed 15 laps.
Props to Jake BTW for refusing alcohol live on telly! :D I'm off to bed too, night guys n gals. This is like a 2nd home for me :D
Don't worry Nick. They're not taking the GP away.
I have a bottle of coca cola light ;)
Tryig to work out the light swiches... whatever i press turns on more!
"My" definition is the one that has been used for years by the likes of Roebuck and whoever else.
If this is the case we should be seeing more overtaking after cars leave the pitlane than we do - it seems like people cannot handle that a new driver can pull a move like that on the world champion. I am not sure I have seen Vettel ever get that close to even make an overtake?
Well its different to what i use.
is there a possibility that he didn't think it was as bad?
i mean, i realise this is inconceivable to you.
Blimey I don't have any kind of vendetta. It just depends where the cars are relative to one another when they come out the pits.
Blocking is banned. You cannot chop across in front of someone and cause an accident. A driver has the right to change his line but he must give the other drivers racing room. He can't just chop accross and force Nakajima to take avoiding action.
That was probably because you're supposed to not drink ahkihols in Abu Dhabi ;)
Night!
There isn't anything I can say to that.
Awww are you not staying with friends out there?
Ello, everyone. How was the show?
Here's a YouTube video I just found of a 2009 season review. It's 1 of 2 parts, but it's epic already:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YIabK0Xnz8
but we see it all the time..?
I think the current generation has picked up remarkably few of Senna or Schumacher's dispicable driving habits but Kobayashi needs to learn that he is in F1 and not dogems.
A driver can defend but he has to take that line before the other driver is committed to it and well before the braking area.
You will soon be like an MP and flip it with your first
:D
The junior series have been overrun by those sorts of moves for a while. They do seem to be improving again. I can't think why. :-)
I know this. I am aware of the rules. We are just calling the same thing different names
I was... they live too far from my dad hotel so i am installed for a night or 3...
really going now... night!
Night Nick
:D More than a few may have done that...
I agree with you to be honest Jon but I've decided I'm just gonna stick with how I feel and leave it at that instead of escalating it.
I don't understand either. Formula Ford and Formula 3 have had these problems since Senna's days but they seem to grow out of it when they reach F1 or soon after. Given the scope Schumacher was given to ram people off the track or into walls I am amazed the current generation don't use their cars as a weapon more
agreed
So why don't you use the same word everyone else uses and has used for decades? Blocking has always meant the same thing
What i don't get (couple of weeks late i know)
Is why Heikki got a penalty for the pit release last race when he did nothing wrong, he stopped asap. He the only difference between that and the Massa sinapore incident was that there was a proper fire, and that's beacuse kovi was unlucky enough to have a car behind him.
Exactly
Because to me it dosen't mean that, and i've never had a conversation using those words before, so now i know that you're meaning differently to what im saying.
If I remember correctly, Massa in Singapore was penalized too - and rightly so.
Really? i forget these things.
If so, ignore me
Don't worry about it. ;) :D
I thought it was more a penalty for McLaren than Heikki.
but I thought Massa also got a penalty for unsafe release at Singapore. Nick got a penalty at Singapore during qualifying for apparently blocking Rubens but due to the pit entrance it was sort of unavoidable.
It was both, Mclaren got a money fine and heikki got a 25 second penalty
Watching the replay of the end of Abu Dhabi. Here's what I find interesting - it seems that both Brawns were faster than both RBRs when night fell. Part of it could be Vettel cruising, but it seems that Brawn have (rather belatedly) cured their low-temperature woes.
ah yes, he got a drive through in the race. thats what confused me...stewards giving penaltys straight away!
now that is a good spot. webber had brake issues, and vettel must've been taking it easy, but fair point.
Nick was catching Rubens at quite a rate and emotions got the better of him in the final couple of laps and his charge on Rubens died. He has admitted it - not that I think he could have overtaken.
They were saying Webber had brake issue but he put second lap from the end a purple sector so it could not have been that bad!
Brawn weren't faster by a lot (otherwise Button would've passed Webber), but it's still a key win for Brawn and something to note for next season.
Could it just be that they had less wear - the problem with this is that Vettel fastest lap of the race was right at the end.
Luuuuuuu
-kkeehhhhh
iPLAYER!!!
How far into the progra was the 3d fly through?
I'm 5 minutes ahead of you :P
Yet Webber struggled. It seems that Vettel was able to take care of his brakes better. Which brings me to another observation.
Tilke's new tracks have been brake-busters, especially Singapore and Abu Dhabi. This could be down to Tilke's love for very slow corners at the end of very fast straights.
Darn!
yay! Will we be getting the end-of-season montage soon, then? :D
Around lap 10?
I doubt it :( Too much uni work. Maybe if I have a bit of spare time..
This will make next year more of which driver can manage their brakes better!
ooooh MUSE!!!!
So you won't be able to upload the one the Beeb made on the Forum yesterday yet?
With everyone on full tanks, that's a very good point.
Lap 8 - 1 minute 40 per lap so 12-15 minutes after the start
Unless the forum is up now I'll get it now but I'll be mega busy tomorrow :(
and having way too many corners
Awww shucks. :( Still, thanks, Lukeh.
20+ per lap!
This is one reason why Timo, if given a decent car could do well - he is able to manage these. I think Nick to - his unmatched run of finishes suggests he knows how to look after a car.
A car flipped in the NASCAR race at Talladega today. The driver was very lucky to be uninjured, he got out and walked away but then had some home truths for the series.. and NASCAR doesn't like being criticised.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxE1_VZkQKI&feature=player_embedded#
(low quality, even though he's fine if you don't like watching this sort of thing you'd best avoid)
Here's Tim's ghost pitstop
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/timpit-wmv
3d Thingy coming up in a sec :)
shouldn't the flaps stop that from happening?
Almost looks like the flap is what lifted the car in the first place.
The roof flaps should, and have done so before. It seems the air gets under the rear wing and lifts the car. The wing is relatively new.
he just starts floating.
Yes, they should, and they didn't. I think the speculation of the commentators, that the rear wing may have had something to do with it is not far off the point.
I have seen many cars rotate around and start to lift, when the roof flaps open the car sits back down.
Flyin' Ryan Newman is absolutely right, the problem is th with the race format, specifically the restricter plate, which cuts HP by 40% causes this 180MPH 5 hour traffic jam.
I can;t believe he just... flies off like that... :/
Also, 3d replay thing is now up
legend!
I totally love Jake after seeing his race. !!!!
couple of things then...
- how did we forget to talk about this in debrief?
- are those helmet positions accurate?
As soon as that car turned round it was generating a ridiculous amount of lift. That should be easily sortable.
Good to hear a driver say what he thinks and he certainly let rip.
Yay I can get the season montage! Is it the one with 'You got the looooove' with the song?
And given the F1 budged, why does it not look better than a PS2 (YES TWO) can put out?
On initial look, the helmet positions are accurate.
hehe. because it has to render very fast.
if true, that is amazing.
seriously, amazing.
A thought to munch on:
Lewis Hamilton (2008) - 98
Jenson Button (2009) - 95
Ferrari (2008) - 172
Brawn (2009) - 172
FOM impressing Mr C. That don't happen too often.
Sorry C... GT5 on PS3 is much better than that and that is real-time. We are talking minutes after, after having compiled GPS data. This ain't rocket science.
It's the first time they've used it, give them a break. It'll get better
i liked thermo cam and the overlays. problem now is i want it for every first corner.
spooky
:D They have plenty of time to perfect it for the next race. ;)
Journeyeerrrrrr :P
I'm not sure what we learn from seeing the first corner this way - I think it would be much more useful when we have a controversial overtake
Had Malaysia gone the full distance, Brawn should've finished on 179. But there ya go. ;)
i don't know enough about it. i can't say the graphics bothered me that much though.
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! :D :D :D
musta missed it. hehe.
But that is not gnerating real-time images from live action. It is doing it from its own data. That skips most of the processes
It's pretty impressive for the speed. I don't care that it's not great graphically. It does its job.
It's probably similar to SPC 3.0, they were just trying to use it in a race situ
I have it then :P See I used my brains. The forum isn't up but the highlights are so I thought 'Maybe they used it at the end of the highlights'
I was right!
Excellent, Lukeh. Great job! :D
Journeyer, it's quite a big file to upload so I'm gonna let me laptop upload it whilst I watch a DVD in bed before sleepyness. So keep your eye on the drop in a bit, shouldnt bee too long :)
Anyways, night!!
I did. But then again, I enjoy every race.
Do I just put on my simpleton's hat? I don't think so....
It was a long, late night for me, but I remember being excited by the Lewis/Vettel battle, being disappointed at Lewis going out, then wondering if Kobayashi could get on the podium, watching to see where all the other one stoppers would end up, Kimi vs. Kovi, I'm sure there was other stuff in there and then Button vs. Webber.
Thank you SO much, Lukeh. Much appreciated.
Night!
"From a position of sheer dejection in practice, when Kubica was over a second quicker than him, Nick picked himself up and pushed his car to within smelling distance of a podium and help the team grab 6th place off Williams in the Constructors' championship "
This is what makes me so angry - it sounds like more poor slow NIck
source: http://www.planetf1.com/story/0,18954,3265_5668823,00.html
If corrected for amount of fuel Nick was actually faster than Robert.
And that 5th place helped Nick jump Robert in the final standings.
I do not care what is said this year Nick was quite significantly better than Robert overall. I agree last year it was the opposite. I do not get why Robert is consider a possible world champion a nick a "slow tortosie" - which is how BBC (Crofty) describes him.
Perhaps because Nick doesn't seem to be trying hard enough - even Stuart C thinks Nick is mediocre.
I know but if you look at his lap speeds it show he is rather faster than Robert.
Ultimately, what will be remembered is that Robert only took almost 2 seasons to win a race and contend for the title. In the 10 seasons Nick's been in F1, he hasn't done either, especially the latter.
but it was team orders that gave Robert that first win!
even so - Robert put himself in a position to take the win. And even if Robert was let by, he had to build the gap - which he did.
but that's why I put emphasis on the latter - you can't contend that Nick's never even been close to mounting a title challenge.
There were circumstances, Nick style of driving did not suit the car particularly in qualifying. Last year there was more of gap between Felipe and Kimi in points for most of the year that there was between Robert and Nick. This year Massa had accumulate more than double the points that Kimi had until the accident. At no point has Robert ever been that dominant over Nick and more particularly Robert has never got fastest laps the way Nick has (I think that year he got two). Its emotion rather than analysis that Robert and Kimi are better than Nick and Felipe.
While these are indeed valid reasons, it doesn't really change the bottom line that it was Robert that got BMW's best results.
But I do wonder - why has the paddock in general ignored Nick while Kimi, Felipe, and Robert have all gone on to better things?
and the latter 3 were all Nick's teammates at some point. heck, even Mark Webber's gone on to win races.
In that year when Nick was teamed with Mark he got two seconds against Mark's one third and got a pole and more accumulated points until his accident sidelined the last four races. Yet I still see people say Mark thrashed Nick that season.
I agree with you on that. Nick actually did better that season - that's why BMW wanted him back at Sauber.
Frank Williams has said he is one of the best drivers in terms of set up and to develop a car - I think you can see that this year. From Spa the car was capable of scoring points consistently.
But you could also say the same of Rubens. It's one thing to set up the car well, it's another to be fast enough to win races and titles.
Anyhoo, off to breakfast for me. Later, y'all. ;)
