Wow-ee. How on earth do you follow a weekend like that, full of dodgy singing, surprisingly good racing and some rather big talking points? Well, I know the right three words to cheer your Monday up, Bank Holiday Monday. Yes, for the second time this month, you can have a lie-in and have a beautiful, relaxing Monday. That is of course unless you don't have it and then I salute you, in working on such a day and for keeping the world ticking. Heroic speech over, to the bulletpoints:
- We were treated to a fantastic Turkish Grand Prix yesterday, yes, you read that right. A fantastic Turkish Grand Prix. The usual links from me, Lukeh and Leigh apply. But the big talking point comes from the incident between the two Red Bull drivers, is Vettel the teacher's pet, is Webber's time at Red Bull nearing an end? There is a poll and a good debate going on here at Sidepodcast, but Lukeh pointed this interesting article out from James Allen.
- Kobayashi rullllllllllllles. (And thats not sarcasm)
- What do you follow a great race with, well, more great racing. The Indy 500 was on yesterday, and I watched it for the first time. Can honestly say I really enjoyed it, even if it was a lucky escape in the end for my supported driver Ryan Hunter-Reay, who was involved in a rather awful accident with Mike Conway, who's car flipped quite scarily. Conway, who of course tested for Honda a few years back, apparantly has a broken leg.
So, just under two weeks left until the World Cup starts, and funny chap Mark Watson has a helpful guide for those of you going to watch the thing for the first time (Mr C, thats you). Until then, there is my non-stop tweets about how England will fail at it and how the mighty Serbia (who lost to New Zealand) will do well.
Should stop talking about the football, the week ahead has lots of things to look forward to it. Of course, some people in the comments are heading off to Motorsport at the Palace, so have a fun day you guys!
Have a nice Monday to the rest of you.
PING --> The full tidied review of the 2010 Turkish Grand Prix will up in a brief moment
http://theformulaoneandmotorsportsarchive.wordpress.com/2010/05/30/2010-turkish-grand-prix-round-7/
it's up and at the above address
:)
morning all. cheers for the daily rg.
morning Mr C,
recovered from a full on day yet?
just watched die hard. classic.
will have to sleep off all the racing action soon. too much fun.
:)
alan rickman playing sebastian vettel??
re: tony fernades' comments. he's blaming xtrac, right?
think so, yeah - i'd be pretty annoyed too if both my cars retired at the exact same time with the same problem
the NASCAR race is on in the background right now, but it's little more than pretty engine noise at the mo
xtrac were promoted by max as the cost effective way to enter f1.
i guess he never said they'd finish.
cost effective doesn't always bring results unfortunately
Happy to note about Conway with just a broken leg and those spectators with stitches at Indy this evening - that could've been much worse
spectators got hit?
aye - a 20 meter hole was ripped into the fence and bits of shrapnel poured into the stands
...such was the ferocity of conway's hit
holy cow
good thing they raised the catch - in the early '90's, conway could have gone over the top of the fence
another quick plug for gp+
http://www.grandprixplus.com/
joe, david and mike = awesome.
going to "flick" through mine in the morning
Apparently today's 500 was the hottest of all time - many fans climbed under the stands to watch in the shade. It was just shy of 40 degree Celcius...
Just a quick update from me personally. Life in Boston has been keeping me stupidly busy and I've been watching most races on delay and while multitasking. The advantage of course, is that you won't hear the results or see the results on any website before you get around to watching the race. And I've had no reliable internet for about a month so I missed monaco for the first time in 20 years, and Webber won. But let's talk about today. Button and lewis did well. I'm curious what happened off camera between those two - fuel saving strategies don't usually involve trying to overtake your teammate. I find that intriguing but while we heard a little about their team, it's obviously shadowed by Red Bull's coming together.
as for Indy500 - i watched a bit of it this year, and that crash was pretty bad. I hope nobody got injured too much. Safety always needs to be reviewed - I hope what leigh mentioned doesn't happen again.
I don't know why that doesn't happen more often
we miss you!
quick note about Indy500: while Conway was airlifted to the hospital - that was just to beat the traffic (source: TV interview with one of the course doctors)
Thanks. It's mutual :)
That went out on the main feed
Conway has a broken left leg, while Ryan Hunter-Reay has a torn ligament (or something like that) in a finger (or hand?)
Two spectators were apparently injured, but only one needed stitches
All the reports I saw said right leg. RHR's apparently injures his ligament at a pit stop and it is nothing to do with the accident. Can't remember who posted that earlier
Could be right - there was confusion over which leg may have taken the brunt of the hit
AUTOSPORT say left now too
CNN says Conway had his left leg injured
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/racing/05/30/indy.500.race.story/index.html?eref=sihp
regardless, it still puts a premature stop to what was becoming a fairly decent season for the chap. Hope he gets well soon.
Nobody wants to see a crash like that. I think we totally agree with you :)
I am confused by Monza tickets. They are huge! And they didn't come with a lanyard or anything so I assume I have to cart then around and show then when necessary? What a pain! They also were just tickets in an envelope with a picture of a ferrari on it, no track map or anything else inside. I am starting to feel spoiled by the Aus GP :D
So the fact they let you into the circuit is not enough. They have to be styled properly and have accessories?
:)
(at least you're going - harrumph...)
:(
As an ex resident of that country, get used to it. I am slightly surprised that your confusion has begun BEFORE you even got to that country. If there's any language issues, shoot me an email.
...now if i had a stockpile of money, that'd be a different story
:)
I am just scared I will lose them!
Tonights post race debrief dinner is nachos! Hooray!
It looks like it's going to rain!! :( nooo rain please!!
Morning everyone
Morning
I have two questions on this gloriously grey day:
1) Who's heading to Crystal Palace?
2) Has anyone seen anything from the Australian media regarding yesterday's Turkish "incident"?
1) *waves* when I get out of bed, probably rocking up around 12.30
grand job, will be up about 12/1 ish myself
was planning to get there for the first runs at 9, but, ya know. im lazy and i like my bed :D
Aye - only dropped off at about 3ish, so I'm taking my time this morning
:)
I think we are going this afternoon... It's only 10 minutes away from our house and yet... we are still hopeless at getting ready!
haha, each car does 3 timed runs starting at 1 so you wont miss anything!
i was going to go for a cycle this morning, but the grey overcast dullness and a somewhat cold wind has put me right off that notion
@Alex / Jon
Do you know if the park close to Crystal Palace station?
I have that most days, but the inner tube destroying contraption that is my bike often has other ideas
looks very close on the map!
SE19 2BA is the post code, so google map that and you can work out roughly where to go
sweet
Morning folks.
He wuz robbed!
Disaster.
It really is... The train station was built to take people to the Crystal Palace (which is no longer there) which is now where the start finish straight usually is.
There will be signs inside the station
Right see y'all in a bit (maybe!), adios
Sweet-mobile
:D
This is just amazing!!
right folks,
i'm off - may see some of you later
i am wearing my first media tabard! :) hehe
We are going to need a picture.
woohoo! you are having a more productive day than me then, I am in a nacho coma.
Karun = AMAZING. :D
http://www.autosport.com/news/grapevine.php/id/84067
how was it with pamela tonight? :)
Absolutely! :)
good good. her trip is only 6 weeks away so lots of Eurotalk :D
Ooh, nachos, don't tell Mr C.
I thought it would be a fitting tribute meal to sidepodcast.
ooooh. Awesome stuff. :D
:D
I like the bit about Heikki - I didn't realise that he was the first team mate to outqualify Jarno at Monao in 14 years. Go Heikki! And the bit about Lewis and the wine is lol :D
Indeed. Not even Alonso managed it... :)
A new Film Watch post: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2010/05/31/film-watch-58-die-hard/
keep an eye on lukes twitter feed this afternoon :) i may wonder away from him soon to go beyond the barrier. hopefully alex will keep him company when he comes :)
I still haven't watched any of my box set of Die Hard Blu Rays. Really should get onto that, I can't remember any of the first 3 because its so long since I've seen them :D
Jake has done a video blog this time: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/jakehumphrey/2010/05/my_turkish_grand_prix_video_bl.html
he talks about his iPad ;)
I'll bet he doesn't miss his clipboard ;)
I don't think he does. he has a lot of information on the thing.
We are almost approaching being ready
What are you up to?
Hi all! A quick ping before I am off for dinner. Will be back later to join the chat (if I can get away from tennis).
oooh yay a blog I can't watch without making an actual effort. Boo.
Well done BBC, really fulfilling their charter requirement there.
i almost spat out my orange juice on the line:
"i hope you also feel that we give all the teams equal standing in the paddock"
Deluded!
after being "in the UK" I have managed to load a whopping 30 seconds of the 8 minutes. My poor poor internet :(
Especially the blue ones, with the red animals on them...
amy, can you summarise the lewis/heikki/ipad story for us pls?
lewis was in the united states, probably watching THAT woman dance, bought an ipad for heikki while he was there. The end :D
Here is Lou: http://twitpic.com/1sqkgx
How do you know this?
Goodwood? On a Monday?
legard said it
Cool.
Crystal palace something or other.
thanking you.
Hi all, at dinner tonight I was privileged enough to hold Amy's Monza tix! They are huge by the way! But v impressive.
oooh Pamela, I had a look, you can get the Eurostar from Brussels to Paris for 30 euro so if you can't find flights that suit it might be worth looking at :D
Ahh, will look into. Thanks! :)
hey pamela!
Hiya!
I think that may well be it's real name.
Boo it isn't http://www.ustream.tv/channel/alexandronov
Copy and paste fail...
http://www.motorsportatthepalace.co.uk/
I was hoping for a hilarious video of you explaining the name!
Ah sorry. I'll see if I can track down Lukeh and get him to explain it.
Although we still haven't left the house.
So the fact they let you into the circuit is not enough. They have to be styled properly and have accessories? {Comment #35}
Well, it does help keep the ticket in a fit state to be seen, especially if the ticket is huge...
Ah, that's a shame. Clearly they have no idea about marketing.
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/05/31/kobayashi-jumps-far-up-the-order-on-christines-rankings/
I'm currently watching the Paralympic World Cup and a few minutes ago I heard something astonishing. Apparently someone failed a drugs test a couple of years ago and attempted to blame... ...hair tonic.
i love motorsport photography :) hehehe :)
Stosur beats Henin! Wooo!
Here's lukeh and Leigh (sort of) http://www.flickr.com/photos/alexandronov/4656308126/
Heikki met Ari. He must want to be Lukeh.
Commentry said, "that gear change shoujded distictly sequentual"

We'll be live on ustream in a moment.
We are live
We are no longer live
it's just like goodwood :)
dang, missed it. here's the replay: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/7354349
you're wandering round with your ipad??
i can't tell, is that jon on the end?
yes
This is lukeh, I have stolen alex's iPad. Its very ipaddy
hehe. does alex think he's jake or something?
#confidentialfromalex
Phew...
Just back from the sunny Algarve...
Had a great time and now need to catch up on my sleep...
I did hear that Red Bull have been bogging up in the rather tame F1 world... and also some very interesting stuff on Ferrari...
yay. was is good?
oh! :)
It was excellent and when I get a moment I'll do a guest piece if you would be interested?...
Yes please!
Jake's first video blog is up
Eddie Stobart trucks in F1??
Jake shows what he uses his iPad for
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/jakehumphrey/2010/05/my_turkish_grand_prix_video_bl.html
OK...
As soon as I can...
i saw a pic of one of them in monaco, but didn't think too much about it. is it significant?
I just never equated Eddie Stobart with F1. I assumed all the teams used their own trucks in their own livery. Stobart is based in Carlisle or somewhere similar and is kind of legendary or as close as a trucking firm can be. The guy who started it insisted that the trucks had to be presented perfectly and the drivers wore a uniform including a tie and they still do. They sell models of their trucks to kids and collectors. I must have seen them thousands of times on the M6 but never expected to see them in F1
Extra parts as the race was a back to back with Barce so the fleet wouldn't be going home and needed extra wheels....
http://twitpic.com/1stbqv
i do wish i could put the bit of my brain that does work, to some use.
Alonso was a lucky boy. I had no idea his car was damaged. That looks like a similar size chunk of wheel that Lewis lost at Barcelona
http://adamcooperf1.com/2010/05/31/lucky-escape-for-alonso-in-turkey/
makes sense.
:D
Afternoon, or evening already as it seems to be :)
Not the cleanest move of the year then...
Petrov should ask for him to be fined!... or Renault!!!....
Nearly ensured Alfonso had nil points...
evening chap
Fantasy IRL results are up. Our league is in second place by a few points
http://www.fantasyindycar.com/
Hi Pat
Slipped down to 4th in Fantasy WRC, boo
Evnin folks.
hey sir
Just catching up. Great to see Lou in the media gear :)
Hi RG
Now there is a competition we are dominating. We are in the lead by over 900 points
it is! Good evening all
you had a good day sir?
yaaa, i is knackered.
i LOVE hill climbs and sprints
Woo, hey Jon.
:)
Not much overtaking though
its proper motorsport, none of this poncy formula one rubbish, a man in a nissan micra going up a hill very fast, thats what i like :D
More than in F1
surely the crystal palace circuit is flat?
nope!
they kept that hill well hidden :)
its not a proper hill climb granted, but it does have a bit of gradient, will upload a video to yoooou tub
good, lots of pics?
lots of video! i dannae have a proper camera at the moment which is highly annoying so i went to film alot and came away with quite a bit, no idea what i'll do with it mind
Totally rubbish video, but you can see what i mean here;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sbph-6L7so
it's rubbish quality, not sure why, its good before i put it on you of the tube. the track keeps going after the car disappears for another 100m or so
A somewhat shaken Ryan Hunter-Reay speaking yesterday after being release from the medical centre:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4CCWoF-DCU
Says his car died and that's how Conway got into him.
nb - has crash replays if you'd prefer not to see those
So a sprint, rather than a hillclimb.
Did they use any of the original circuit?
They call it a sprint, but I think this is one of those occations this could be either.
it's in hd 720p quality for me?
oh and i dont know, not sure what the full circuit looked like, but i seem to remember seeing an interview where they said that they did use part of it
yeah but it's bad focus and light.
that's a gentle incline.
looks great to me, but you need a tripod.
love it when the car is heading directly at you!
I've got one but they banned them for this event, alot of the places you took photos/video were quite exposed and so i guess they thought you wouldnt be paying as much attention
I can honestly saying, the first time it happened...i wasn't loving it :P it was especially worse when they lock up
evening folks,
how are you all?
just a quick update about mike conway from pressdog
I don't usually fall for marketing gimmicks but this is highly cool!
http://www.youtube.com/user/indycars#p/u/10/HrUE5g4WlGU
Commentary is Jack Arute (legendary pit reporter, missing from ABC TV coverage as he is locked into Versus) and Mario Andretti (Racing God). Driver is Michael Andretti. Passenger is Mark Wahlberg.
The IndyCar 2-seater was running during the pace laps of the Indy 500, ahead of the field. When the lead cars pulled in, it set off at full speed. It caught the back of the field moments before the green flag waved.
Okay I can see the potential for #fail... but it is still cool.
Good day at the the crystal palace..thing?
Justin Wilson just tweeted this:
Just been to see Mike. I could not believe how well he looks. He's sat in bed chatting away. Left leg in cast & a neck brace for few weeks.
Aye - t'was good fun indeed
The spinal injury is clearly a bigger problem than his leg but given the nature of the accident still relatively minor compared to what could have happened
haven't heard that before.
Seems odd that Andretti was driving that when he has five cars in the race. You would think running 5 cars would occupy his time.
in the letter they sent it specifically said'
"Please be aware that due to the nature of the event the competiting cars may be more unpredictable than is normal so photographers should be prepared to move out of the way quickly."
I can understand why they would say it, but it was annoying
Keep an eye on Andam Cooper's blog for the next day or so.
http://twitter.com/adamcooperf1/status/15129478483
Had a lengthy chat tonight with Christian Horner about what happened yesterday and where RBR goes from here. Interesting views from him
if the camera was on a tripod, wouldn't you be able to move quicker? leaving it there.
maybe, but then the driver might hit in and it might still hit you. its a bit silly
i.e. complete amateurs, be ready to run
his comments are telling too:
Don’t forget there’s a long list of drivers who gave been dropped by Red Bull in acrimonious circumstances even after getting years of support. Think of Klien, Speed, Liuzzi, or ‘outsider’ Bourdais, and those are just guys who made it to F1.
Why didn't they just put up big signs in capital letters saying safety has not been a big priority when planning this event
That's not a good thing to say. It's like they are saying "We haven't been able to make the event as safe as it should be, so it's up to you not to get hit by a car"...
:)
It would ruin the fun..?
;)
i wonder how that argument will work in court...
To be fair, they did really well with the safety aspect, especially given the fact that its a normal park the rest of the year, but they didnt armco the whole thing as that would have been excessive, the warnign was just saying that the run off area in some corners was up the banks....where the photographers were standing...
It seems unfair to tell the media that the safety is not up to scratch but not telling the public
Thing is photographers always go to mentalist locations to get a good shot. You are reliant on drivers being able to stay on the road to be safe.
It wouldn't!
The public were miles away from the track and behind armco and fences
It's like Goodwood or similar events. Safety is not close to normal event standards and weirdly people like the events more for that
be interesting to try....
Think about where those guys were lying at Monaco. Being there with pro drivers is one thing. Would you be there if Sato was on the loose though :P
ahh, makes more sense.
OK
Also good evening :)
It's perfectly safe, but its not f1 standards, its as safe as it needs to be
:D
You seem happier now
I guess so. Not really.
Oh was it just the media who could stand there?
i think some people who've never been to these are surprised that all motorsports isn't like F1 - it's like the audience has been conditioned to expect huge run off areas and 1000 marshalls
Not confusing at all
That's me :D
The public were behind armo, the media could pretty much go where they wantede
now we know how mental jon is, where did lou stand?
:)
totally, i was often very close to the cars and felt perfectly safe, the public were behind armco and a fence, one car at a time so theres not going to be any contact, nout wrong
He's got strategists and spotters on each car and they hadn't started racing yet (plus one of those cars gets a pile of cash from the series sponsor)
I am sure a lot of people who go to events like that rather than normal club events expect it to be more like F1
even closer :D
heeh
Since we haven't heard from her or Lukeh yet can we conclude she stood a little closer to the action?
haha, they went with alex and kat for a drink (and leigh went too?) so i presume they went off after that and had a catch up and what not
Tweet from Lukeh earlier..
http://twitpic.com/1sqmff - Another pic of lou working :p
i did - good fun
Mr C, i have now watched HIGNFY.
Brucey is wierd...
Wish I could've made it, glad you all had fuin
err, fun
She is behind armco. Too safe
that he is
It's my birthday tomorrow. I feel very old :( All downhill from here.
happy birthday tomorrow alison
Happy Birthday. You are right. You will feel a lot older tomorrow and every day it just gets worse
I might get over it though if I can have this cake http://bit.ly/aSI6kG
Happy birthday! That happens.
:)
Is that a proposal to Nick?
Haha he sent it to me... If I'm honest, it looks like a happy 1st birthday cake to me.
Sshhh! I know the rules say we are supposed make the young 'uns live in fear of getting old so we get some respect, but Alison is our friend :P
The site is myweddingcake.com.au Why was Nick looking at a wedding cake site?
I already asked that. He claimed to have just googled duck cake :P
A likely story
I'm sorry Steven. You should take your hat back to the shop.
A man chose that cake for his wedding and the bride suddenly realised what men are really like, too late to do anything abou it :)
Probably grounds for an annulment though
What hat?
Your wedding hat clearly :)
I'm happy I moved jobs at just the right time. Current company give me my birthday as an extra paid day off :D
:D
am home :)
you survived1
Still in one piece then?
:) hehehehehe!!
yes!! :) heheh
i (heart) motorsport photography :)
let us see!
hehe i've only just fixed my laptop (i have a new charger :) ) will upload a taster shot in a sec...
Sounded like a good day!
This is a nice little piece I just found that was put on the beeb this morning about Britain and Motorsport.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/10161744.stm
it was amazing!!! but my god im tired..
Evening :)
Hi Lukeh.
Good day out?
Yes, thank you. I created my own underground line, got to see cars and played with an ipad. a good day in all.
Hello
you created what?
The Hammersmith and Apollo line, apparently.
omg... ipads are stunning things... i... need one...
oh and you forgot to mention you discovered a new williams f1 driver :P ehehe!
true story. i still have all four screens set up from the race. my desk it fabulous.
Our jaws = dropped
pics please :)
i should check that out.
I must be ill or something, because earlier I was thinking about if I got one...
i wouldn't.. it's very confusing.. :)
will do. i shall blog it this week.
it is :(
Lou was loving the ipad though. I was a little too scared I would break it so I poked it once at first and that was exciting enough.
I'm just planning on repatriating Nick's
I've put an update of the engine situation on my blog.
photos on it look incredible!!! it's much heavier than i thought it would be
Kats photos were incredible. The quality was mindblowing.
And the pinching feature. And going in and out of albums. And this and that and everything.
I posted this earlier but Jake did a video blog and plays with his iPad
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/jakehumphrey/2010/05/my_turkish_grand_prix_video_bl.html
it's amazing how it's changed our way of working already.
in the past, to show christine a picture, i'd email it, comment the url, or say the url and she'd re-key. now i just flip over the device or hand it too her.
did you try the map?
Thanks for that. I had totally lost track
nope... we tried the f1 app..photos and some of the games. including the one where iphones are controllers and the track is on the ipad :)
The games were awesome
#notcompetitive
Thanks for that. I had totally lost track {Comment #289}
For a time, I had too... ...I'd somehow managed to leave it nearly two weeks since last seriously looking at the blog through sheer absent-mindedness and thus missed updating for Monaco. Oops!
Eurgh I only have 15 minutes of youth left :(
Nick was trying to tell me it happened already but that's clearly ridiculous.
:(
none of tonight's pics are edited... but
Lukeh and Leigh..
Lukeh's new car
Has he said if he is going to dump you when you are old in 15 minutes?
Eurgh I only have 15 minutes of youth left :( {Comment #293}
Youth is in the mind and heart. If you want to be young tomorrow, you certainly can be :)
*swoons*
A red car and it already wants me to drive it with seatbelts like that. It was meant to be.
Oh and fair enough lou. McGregor make clothes... not drive f1 cars...
:)
I was at work on Sunday and someone thought I was still at school. I'm not sure that's a compliment either....
i told you they were a sponsor! they've been a sponsor for ages! ;) not a williams test driver :P
Oh and fair enough lou. McGregor make clothes... not drive f1 cars...
i told you they were a sponsor! they've been a sponsor for ages! {Comment #302}
I remember when they used to sponsor Spyker...
I maintain that is the most confusing place to put a sponsor, a sponsor sounding like a driver's name where the driver's name usually is
It left me very confused and bewildered as to who McGregor was :(
hehe
ehehehehehe!!!
today was sooooo much fun!
:D
last pic of this evening...
http://twitpic.com/1sv8pc
Jon working :)
yay for you getting the link wrong!
I am impressed he could drive as well in such a nice car
Wrong link Lou
I did pass my ARDS you know ;)
ah i'm tired...
http://twitpic.com/1svbl9
aaah now i dont like you
oh hush... you know how shattered i am :P although.. i'm loving having my laptop back at last..
:P
Hiding behind a tree? Wimp :P
I got shouted at by a marshal for standing in front of hte barriers. oopps
