And so we come to the last day in May. At least I think it is. Yesterday, I managed to head up my daily post with the wrong date and confuse everyone in the process. Fingers crossed I am more factually correct today. Here are some of the things we're talking about today:

  • It's Debrief day today, and we'll be live streaming a show later in the evening. We're looking for all kinds of feedback for this show, be it voicemails, emails, or just something you want to share with us. The number is 0121 28 87225, or 0121 28 TRACK. Search on Skype for Sidepodcast, or send your emails to [email protected] You know you want to, and it would make my day.
  • Lukeh did some amazing work designing a car for Sidepodcast on Forza 2 on the X-Box. He's got some pictures of the initial design and then some of the car in action. Check them out and praise him because you're looking at hours worth of effort.
  • We tuned in to the F2 race yesterday and it wasn't all that bad. We're pretty impressed with the site, though, as the live stream was available right next to the live timing. I had great fun trying to pronounce all the names of the drivers, and decided that Brundle was going to get my support.

We're looking forward to the debrief stream later, but there's plenty of sunshine hours to be enjoyed before that. If we're not out, soaking up some rays, then I'll see you in the comments.

I'm tempted to try and get the logo in the next few days as close as possible to the actual logo including the red bull. We'll see what happens :) although simply but sweet also works, plus panda, so it's all fine :P

    Evening all.

I have wasted the ast hour and some on a stupid game which comes from the same people who made the stupid castle game. i decided to play a game or two of this futuristic football/American football type game just to try it. I am not competitive but somehow I didn't stop playing till I won the world championship.

Despite competing in motorsport events for years, I always claimed to 'not be a competitive person'. I just did it for fun right?

just one question before i go.. is it really that unreasonable not to want to give someone the password details to your email? so that they can go and delete messages they've sent you. and when you say no, is it unreasonable to get upset when they say they will hack into it anyway?..

that would be called sensible in my book.

i believe that would illegal in the eyes of the law.

apparently it's easy to do if you do the forget password bit, and answer the question or whatever. i've changed the question to something they wont know the answer to, but it's freaked me out alot..

You should never give anyone your password and whoever you ae talking about is being entirely unreasonable

Here's a thought I had on Friday while working in the hot Sun. With all the new teams lining up to get into F1 due to the budget cap and the existing teams looking like they are ready to sign up means we might have an abundance of teams, some of these teams will be uncompetitive and some will be just plain bad. Maybe there needs to be a system in place similar to what the Premier League has, a separate for prospective teams to prove that they are worthy of being in F1 that way you could relegate the bottom feeders who do nothing for the sport and promote teams from the lower league. Like I said I think I might of had way too much sun on Friday. Now I must get back to 'Saving Private Ryan' which begins my Week of War Films Festival.

  • Journeyer31/05/2009 at 02:49

It's a promising idea, Aitch, but it's very dangerous in that most manufacturers (that means you, Toyota and Renault) would probably rather sell or shutter their F1 teams than see their names relegated to a GP2-type series.

Isn't that what prequalifying was in the late 80's early 90's.

I also have an idea for the lack of testing. Allow the cars run a 3rd car for FP1 and FP2 so that back up drivers get some track time.

  • Journeyer31/05/2009 at 03:01

Isn't that what prequalifying was in the late 80's early 90's.

Not exactly. It only meant that they'd go home on Friday. There's no lower formulae where they could race.

I also have an idea for the lack of testing. Allow the cars run a 3rd car for FP1 and FP2 so that back up drivers get some track time.

We already had that, from 2004-2006. It was scrapped in the name of cost-saving.

  • Joe in Fla31/05/2009 at 03:03

We already had that, from 2004-2006. It was scrapped in the name of cost-saving.

I liked it though and with no more testing, I'm sure the money is there. If Bernie wanted to really have the fans warm up to him, he'd have a sprint race on Sunday morning for the 3rd cars

I don't think it will happen if the new teams come on board. They won't have enough money to build 3 cars. And Max would have to adjust the cap to allow for a 3rd car as well - something which he's already hesitant to do for FOTA.

Ohhh... for the bigger teams, they have a couple of spare cars in the factory, probably 2 or 3. For the smaller teams, though, I'm not sure if they have any - and even if they did, they're probably exhibition cars (i.e. models from previous years) and not really race-ready cars.

That said, I do remember some of the teams going to Kemble for straight-line testing, so they have the 1 extra car for such mule runs.

I remember seeing a picture of one of the factory floor, Mclaren I think and there was 4 cars in various stages of construction/reconstruction

But wouldn't those include the 2 actual race-cars? If it does, that would leave us with 2 spare cars, which should be just about right.

Good point. I forget how expensive those cars must be. You see a NASCAR shop and they have a dozen cars laying around.

Yup - very expensive indeed. But even NASCAR can be pricey. A lot of teams now are just satellites of the bigger constructors. Customer cars, if you will.

  • Joe in Fla31/05/2009 at 03:27

yes, at one point I heard unit cost for a rolling NASCAR racer was $100,000. I suspect F1 is at least 10X that.

Urgh, morning. Now I know what 4 vodka Red Bulls and 2 apple sambucca shots can do to you. Man, I slept last night.

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 09:54

I liked it though and with no more testing, I'm sure the money is there. If Bernie wanted to really have the fans warm up to him, he'd have a sprint race on Sunday morning for the 3rd cars

    Now that idea I like.

  • Lukeh31/05/2009 at 10:04

    Morning all.

  • Chris31/05/2009 at 10:15

    Morning all. Quiet isn't it?

Another f2 race today I think

  • RG31/05/2009 at 10:16

    Morning all. Quiet isn't it?

    Usually is in the mornings.

And yeah, think there is a f2 race on today, dunno what time though

  • Chris31/05/2009 at 10:18

And yeah, think there is a f2 race on today, dunno what time though

The websit says 1:50 local time. I think the uk's an hour ahead. so 12:50 uk time

  • RG31/05/2009 at 10:25

The websit says 1:50 local time. I think the uk's an hour ahead. so 12:50 uk time

Right, I think I'm doing absolutly nothing today, so I'll watch that. Maybe with the BTCC on in the background

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 10:26

Right, I think I'm doing absolutly nothing today, so I'll watch that. Maybe with the BTCC on in the background

Sounds like a plan. Isn't there WTCC as well today?

  • RG31/05/2009 at 10:27

Sounds like a plan. Isn't there WTCC as well today?

Probably. But theres also the Moto GP. And my I think three races at one time is a bit insane.

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 10:28

Probably. But theres also the Moto GP. And my I think three races at one time is a bit insane.

Still, at least we've got racing to keep us occupied on a non-F1 weekend :P

  • RG31/05/2009 at 10:30

Still, at least we've got racing to keep us occupied on a non-F1 weekend :P

non-F1 weekends are the best. Soooo much racing on.

    I don't like non F1 weekends :(

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 10:36

    I don't like non F1 weekends :(

Let's just say any weekend with racing is a good weekend. ;)

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 10:40

Right, I've made a decision - no more unnecessary spending on things I don't need. All the things like the WSPC dvd and the Brawn stuff and everything like that can wait until I have my driving licence and a car. That way I'm finally mobile and can then start to enjoy my money a little more, without going mad with it of course.

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 10:44

But having said that there are one or two things, pretty much the data charges I owe on the Vodafone contract, that I need to take care of which require relinquishing some funds. I have had to drag my savings into my main account until I get paid for next week.

Plus because I've lived in 2 different houses in the last 2 years, I had to put down a £100 deposit, for a credit check I assume, which I will get back in 3 months. But for now, it's time to get protective of my cash.

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 10:45

    Good afternoon everyone :)

    Good afternoon everyone :)

    ;) Hey.

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 10:49

Hey Alex, how goes it? :)

It goes pretty well. The sun is shining. I'm off into London Town.

We are going to see the Kuniyoshi exhibition at the Royal Academy.

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 10:50

It goes pretty well. The sun is shining. I'm off into London Town.

Sounds like fun. It's nothing but blue skies here in Wymondham too. Although I may have to sleep a bit more later on after last night.

  • Christine31/05/2009 at 10:51

We are going to see the Kuniyoshi exhibition at the Royal Academy.

You are so very cultured :)

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 10:51

These are the sorts of things one has to do to stay entertained on non F1 days.

What are you lot up to?

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 10:52

You are so very cultured :)

    Something like that ;)

  • RG31/05/2009 at 10:53

What are you lot up to?

Watching racing. BTCC from Oulton Park, F2 and MotoGP.

Yeah, maybe might need to go outside at some point.

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 10:53

What are you lot up to?

Apart from watching some of the racing on today, Sweet Foxtrot Alpha. ;)

  • Lukeh31/05/2009 at 10:54

What are you lot up to?

Playing Football Manager and feeling a bit silly but the upside is that it's not as warm as it was yesterday. Phew.

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 10:55

I like to keep a balance. Too much of even a thing you love is still too much.

It's important to keep other interests too otherwise you wake up one day and discover that somebody has destroyed the one sport you love and you've got nothing else.

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 10:56

Wow that sounds preachy from me! Sorry about that!

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 10:57

No need to apologise, you make a valid point!

Oh, you weren't talking about golf

I love the press when Andy Murray wins a game and they claim he'll win it.

  • Amy31/05/2009 at 11:11

I love the press when Andy Murray wins a game and they claim he'll win it.

The press seem to do that a lot. I see a lot of parallels in the coverage of Andy and the coverage of Lewis.

  • RG31/05/2009 at 11:58

Funny, I didnt expect ads on the F2 feed

It's the Eurosport feed, and Eurosport has ads. Don't think F2 has its own feed.

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 11:58

Funny, I didnt expect ads on the F2 feed

They're using a live stream from Eurosport. The ads can't be helped it seems.

  • Jon Waldockjobs31/05/2009 at 11:58

    Raiiin

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 11:59

Rain now starting to fall at Valencia?

    Ah of course

  • Nick31/05/2009 at 11:59

It's the Eurosport feed, and Eurosport has ads. Don't think F2 has its own feed.

I guess that was part of the deal with eurosport to allow them to stream it online

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 11:59

MotoGP are on their warmup up lap. Circuit is damp to say the least.

  • Alianora La Canta31/05/2009 at 12:00

The F2 site won't load on my computer today :(

  • Jon Waldockjobs31/05/2009 at 12:01

  • Selidor31/05/2009 at 12:01

    Avon tires. Old School :P

  • RG31/05/2009 at 12:01

Oooh, three cars off in the Formula Renualt on TV Screen.

  • Alianora La Canta31/05/2009 at 12:01

As long as nobody feels the need to copy Rossi's four-stop strategy from last race, that's fine by me :)

Just been thinking this morning - Lola and Prodrive are both trying to venture into F1 at the same time that they're in partnership together with the Aston Martin LMP1. Could it be possible they could be quite "buddy-buddy" next season should they both make it?

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 12:23

FRenault lap record is being broken every single lap at Oulton!

  • Jon Waldockjobs31/05/2009 at 12:24

I'm not sure the LMS partnership is quite how it's appeared to be, i think it's just a deal where they buy the car, but i could be worng

Pedrosa is down and looks like he's in real pain with the hip he injured.

  • Jon Waldock31/05/2009 at 12:31

I've had jobs on the end of my name but never realised.

Pedrosa is down and looks like he's in real pain with the hip he injured.

That was going to happen, i can't believe he raced given the amount of pain he was in, he couldn't even get on the bike himself, he had to use a small plastic step to get on

  • RG31/05/2009 at 12:32

    Wooo, go Toseland.. 6th.

Not often we get to say that

  • Nick31/05/2009 at 12:33

  • Jon Waldock31/05/2009 at 12:33

  • Flibster31/05/2009 at 12:38

They need to get rid of the traction control

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 12:38

Lot of drivers fanning their doors to try and cool down.

  • Jon Waldock31/05/2009 at 12:38

Proper slipstreaming as well, never knew they had that with bikes

125cc quali was insane with slipstreaming, you could only get a quick lap slipstreaming so everyone was doing it, was awesome

  • Jon Waldock31/05/2009 at 12:39

Porsches up next at Oulton :D

They're my least favourite of all the support series if i'm honest, not sure why. They're nice to look at, but the races can get a bit processional, but lets hope not today

  • Nick31/05/2009 at 12:39

125cc quali was insane with slipstreaming, you could only get a quick lap slipstreaming so everyone was doing it, was awesome

LOL at the pink and puke green Porsche

  • Nick31/05/2009 at 12:40

There was a great tug of war between a unimog and a porsche stuck in gear in a gravel trap a couple of events back :D

  • Jon Waldock31/05/2009 at 12:40

Wow, shame i missed quali, although 125 quali is perhaps a bit too obscure, even for me!

Nah, 125 and 250 races/quali are as good as the Moto Gp races

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 12:42

Accident already with the Porsches. Pink+puke Porsche involved! :D

  • Nick31/05/2009 at 12:42

Nah, 125 and 250 races/quali are as good as the Moto Gp races

Nah, 125 and 250 races/quali are as good as the Moto Gp races

I think so, all very good in my opinion. Some decent little drivers in the 125s and 250s

Seems to be the "in" thing. If you don't use Muse in your motorsport coverage, you're not cool.

To be fair the BBC use a lot of their stuff away from motorsport, the theme for the Sports personality of the year a few years ago was Butterflies and Hurricanes with an orchestra at the event playing it, and they tend to pop up on adverts here and there. I dunno why it shocks me so much when I hear them on tv to be honest... :P

Ive downloaded the panel season 1 highlights, as well as all the season 2 ones i missed. Now ive realised that i have to listen to them, which requires another 8 mile walk, so getting ready to punish myself again :(

I've just watched an awesome MotoGP race. I just wish the Australian commentators would mention ALL the Aussies in the race, instead of just the one who wins all the time. Chris Vermeulan was running so well and after the pitstops when he dropped back, it was like he didn't exist.

  • Journeyer31/05/2009 at 15:08

    Sshhh! Silly man!

    :D

  • Amy31/05/2009 at 15:09

I thought that was what all races were like! I thought people only watched car racing for the crashes. I was so naiive. Although, I was 12.

If only there were more women like you Amy :-) Please consider moving to Sydney...

Even though I have Mondays off, I must sleep now. Goodnight all and good health to all those who have been outside recently.

    Night Jeremy. :)

  • Amy31/05/2009 at 15:14

Heheh. :D And you started watching again in what year?

2005. I am still yet to see every race live for some reason or another, I am hoping 2009 is my year!

  • Amy31/05/2009 at 15:15

ooh, an upset in the Womens too. Ivanovic is out.

Don't be pessimistic now. :P I last missed a live race in... 2003?

In 2008 one was an oops, I was on a plane on the way back to New Zealand while the Malaysian race was on because I forgot that there wasn't two weeks between Australia and Malaysia when I booked my flights :(

  • lou31/05/2009 at 15:21

I missed the Canadian race live last year because I was at Silverstone for the WSR. I missed a lot of Magny-Cours too because I had stayed over at a friends house after a house party and F1 wasn't exactly what they wanted to watch.

  • Lukeh31/05/2009 at 15:24

We have returned. Everyone start behaving. :)

Mr C? Right? It's actually happened? *faints*

  • Journeyer31/05/2009 at 15:29

    Oh good lord.

Another one? Hmmm... Did they file before the deadline, though? Every new application strengthens Max's position and weakens FOTA's.

What's the "ahem" for? I've missed this.

  • Jon Waldock31/05/2009 at 15:31

We were discussing this and there was speculation that there may be other entries that hadn't been announced

Which, in hindsight was quite clever, because they get a non-FOTA-ed up news cycle

  • RG31/05/2009 at 15:32

Thanks for the email RG, love it :)

    No worries ;)

Both the G50 and Clio races were red flagged and then Steve Ryder comes up with "Lets hope the Ginetta Junior can get through the race without causing a race stoppage" (im paraphrasing)

Ginetta Juniors are known for their inability to not spin, thats hilarious

  • Amy31/05/2009 at 15:33

Wurz as team principal? Never saw that coming!

5-5 at RG. Even when the game is over I won't be able to sleep from adrenalin.

Both because of rather large accidents, too.

Wonder if Christian Klien is re-dong his CV?

Interested that he wants to initially use an existing UK facility - where could this be?

  • lou31/05/2009 at 15:43

I thought Ant still was anyway.

we had a big discussion about it a while back because Wurz was thought to be still part of the team, and some sources said he was 3rd driver, some said Ant was. lol

  • Jon Waldock31/05/2009 at 15:43

I thought Ant still was anyway.

I would be surprised if he wasn't, i haven't seen Wurz for ages, 3rd drivers have to come to the track (generally)

"...cars will be powered by the standard-specification Cosworth engine."

do we think cossy are just saying "yes" to everybody? what happens if 4 or 5 teams all want to use them. can they even supply that many in time for next year's championship?

  • lou31/05/2009 at 15:49

do we think cossy are just saying "yes" to everybody? what happens if 4 or 5 teams all want to use them. can they even supply that many in time for next year's championship?

do we think cossy are just saying "yes" to everybody? what happens if 4 or 5 teams all want to use them. can they even supply that many in time for next year's championship?

How many teams will actually be on the grid though using Cossie engines?

  • Rich31/05/2009 at 15:50

do we think cossy are just saying "yes" to everybody? what happens if 4 or 5 teams all want to use them. can they even supply that many in time for next year's championship?

I think their entire business model was to have at least 4 or 5 teams to get the costs down!

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 15:50

Thats what they are technically expected to do isn't it?

What's to say those engines aren't already being built if not already are?

    5-1. I can't breathe.

Imagine how excited Roger must be right now!

seems like it. it makes sense - max would've warned them ahead of time.

  • Rich31/05/2009 at 15:51

What's to say those engines aren't already being built if not already are?

My hunch is they have/are being built hence Max not wanting to drop the budget caps.

  • me31/05/2009 at 15:52

Thats what they are technically expected to do isn't it?

i dunno. 8 engines per car, per season. two cars per team, maybe 5 or 6 teams all interested.

that could be 80+ engines to be built and shipped before this time next year.

  • RG31/05/2009 at 15:52

    5-1. I can't breathe.

Imagine how excited Roger must be right now!

Murray must be fancing his chances as well.

  • me31/05/2009 at 15:52

I think their entire business model was to have at least 4 or 5 teams to get the costs down!

could be. but wouldn't they need more time than this?

  • me31/05/2009 at 15:52

My hunch is they have/are being built hence Max not wanting to drop the budget caps.

    ahhh. interesting.

  • Lukeh31/05/2009 at 15:54

  • Bassano Clapper31/05/2009 at 15:55

that's why i said by this time next year :)

Some of them won't be required until towards the end of 2010 season

  • me31/05/2009 at 15:56

Some of them won't be required until towards the end of 2010 season

they'd need to be ready by now though cause teams have the right to swap them when and how they choose.

you could but engine number 8 in by the 8th race if that's the way you manage your season. and put number 1 back in for race 9.

  • Jon Waldock31/05/2009 at 15:56

Game set and Match Mr Steve, i win

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 15:56

If that's the case, they must be in production already (maybe for some time)

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 15:58

Now to install the Airport Extreme!

Let me know what it's like. I have an iPhone now, if you didn't know. ;)

  • Amy31/05/2009 at 15:59

Knowing my luck Roger will get knocked out by Haas tomorrow and all my excitment will be in vain. I feel robbed of another Nadal/Verdasco match up too.

  • Bassano Clapper31/05/2009 at 15:59

Now to install the Airport Extreme!

    what have i missed?

Alex bought the Apple wireless router thingy

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 15:59

    what have i missed?

I was let lose on Regents street earlier as Katherine went handbag shopping. It's 2 minutes walk between the Ferrari shop and the Apple Store. I had to buy something...

  • me31/05/2009 at 16:00

odd, because i haven't spotted any ads for jobs?

  • Journeyer31/05/2009 at 16:00

Knowing my luck Roger will get knocked out by Haas tomorrow and all my excitment will be in vain. I feel robbed of another Nadal/Verdasco match up too.

You know that's what Andy Murray will be hoping for... But nah, I think Roger will be revitalized with Nadal's early exit.

  • lou31/05/2009 at 16:00

Now to install the Airport Extreme!

    yay!

(i don't even know what airport extreme, but it must be good...)

No, it's the other way around, you've just saved it :D

    Absolutely!

Although as Apple are likely to be announcing a new one in two weeks... It may not have been the best moment :(

    Is production in the UK?

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 16:01

Although as Apple are likely to be announcing a new one in two weeks... It may not have been the best moment :(

Meh, iPhone's an iPhone. The new one won't be much different it seems, looking at what's reported to be in the annoucement. But I'm not going into all that again...

  • me31/05/2009 at 16:01

    Is production in the UK?

good question. i assumed so, but maybe not.

  • Bassano Clapper31/05/2009 at 16:01

    ooh ok. :)

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 16:02

What's going on? There are no apple stickers?

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 16:03

What's going on? There are no apple stickers?

    Shock horror!

I got some with my iPhone :D

  • Lukeh31/05/2009 at 16:03

Although as Apple are likely to be announcing a new one in two weeks... It may not have been the best moment :(

See this is why I'm never gonna buy an iPhone. Ridiculous how often they update, and now Sony are doing the same thing with the flippin' PSP much in the same way Nintendo did with the DS twice...

Grrrr, I hate modern media sometimes.

  • Bassano Clapper31/05/2009 at 16:03

What's going on? There are no apple stickers?

I never used mine, people seem quite attached to them

  • RG31/05/2009 at 16:03

What's going on? There are no apple stickers?

If thats the case it must be dodgy.

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 16:03

I never used mine, people seem quite attached to them

I have never used mine either... But I'm upset they aren't there.

  • Bassano Clapper31/05/2009 at 16:04

Once a year and announced every June, quite predictable really

Well a new phone every 18 months isn't that bad.

  • Bassano Clapper31/05/2009 at 16:04

What's going on? There are no apple stickers?

If thats the case it must be dodgy.

Maybe he's got a Ferrari phone and an Apple car!

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 16:04

    do you have cable then?

No telephone... Have I made a terrible error?

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 16:05

Maybe he's got a Ferrari phone and an Apple car!

Is the router not supposed to be bright red?

  • Joe31/05/2009 at 16:05

I wonder how RG is getting on with the GP2 stuff.

  • me31/05/2009 at 16:06

No telephone... Have I made a terrible error?

    umm. it doesn't do adsl?

  • RG31/05/2009 at 16:06

I wonder how RG is getting on with the GP2 stuff.

All good, had a bit of messing around with it. Many spins and crashes later, I still need more time getting used to it ;)

  • me31/05/2009 at 16:07

    umm. it doesn't do adsl?

but you can plug your current modem in via ethernet and still get dual-band screamingly fast wi-fi.

    so it's all good.

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 16:08

    umm. it doesn't do adsl?

Ah that might be a issue... Hmmm... That's the problem with impulse buys isn't it!

I did ask on here if there were any issues with buying it and Jeremy said, "only if you're allergic to awesome". I didn't want to be allergic to awesome :(

  • Bassano Clapper31/05/2009 at 16:09

I've never read anything about incompatabilities with AE

hehehe. apologies for being outside, i woulda said.

still, it will allow you to stream HD video wirelessly around your house, which i'm guessing your current router won't?

  • me31/05/2009 at 16:10

I've never read anything about incompatabilities with AE

in america, i'm guessing must people have cable.

  • Bassano Clapper31/05/2009 at 16:10

hehehe. apologies for being outside, i woulda said.

    See what happens! :D

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 16:10

    so it's all good.

    phew :)

My problem is that the ADSL part of my router is a bit busted. Keeps randomly dropping off the internets. Which is why I thought I should get a new one. Hmmm... I'm sure there will be a solution here where I get a new ADSL thing and then also get to keep the "screamingly fast". I might have to buy something else though (don't tell Katherine)

  • Journeyer31/05/2009 at 16:11

amy, still up? verdasco on the verge of losing set 1 to davydenko...

  • Bassano Clapper31/05/2009 at 16:11

    Oops, more shoes

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 16:12

I've told you about going outside - It's not good for you (or more me ;)

still, it will allow you to stream HD video wirelessly around your house, which i'm guessing your current router won't?

    Nice :)

  • Christine31/05/2009 at 16:12

    as if we would.

just grab any recent netgear thingy (adsl 2/2+ compatible), and plug it in the back. i think the AE is one of the only decent dual band devices available now, so you're ahead of the curve.

    ...and i want one.

  • Amy31/05/2009 at 16:13

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 16:21

hmm. presumably you've done all the firmware stuff?

Yeah... Not sure what's going on... My ISP changed something and ever since then it's been dropping connections pretty regularly.

I'll have another go at the old firmware.

  • me31/05/2009 at 16:21

Yeah... Not sure what's going on... My ISP changed something and ever since then it's been dropping connections pretty regularly.

almost certainly needs new firmware. if they're upgraded and you haven't.

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 16:24

almost certainly needs new firmware. if they're upgraded and you haven't.

Well I did try that but it was quite a confusing process because for some reason Chrome is convinced that Netgears drivers a missing. Very odd little bug there.

do you regret not picking up an appletv whilst you were in the shop?

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 16:56

do you regret not picking up an appletv whilst you were in the shop?

(already owns an apple tv... Now Apple TV works properly... Regret not buying a 1 TB Time Machine but that's for another day)

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 16:58

The appletv was the purchase that Katherine least understood when I made it. Thought it was completely mad and has been one of the things she's most enjoyed. "It's like iTunes for your TV" she said the other day and the marketing team from Apple would have done a little dance if they could have.

  • me31/05/2009 at 16:58

already owns an apple tv... Now Apple TV works properly...

    in that case... you rock!

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 17:00

    in that case... you rock!

    Thank you very much :)

The appletv made so much sense for me. Most of my data is that kind of data. It being backed up is great.

Best feature... Apple TV connected to hi-fi with speakers that can run into the garden. Sit outside with iPhone using remote and control the music. When people see you doing it they believe they have entered the future.

  • Steven Roy31/05/2009 at 17:01

Just been thinking this morning - Lola and Prodrive are both trying to venture into F1 at the same time that they're in partnership together with the Aston Martin LMP1. Could it be possible they could be quite "buddy-buddy" next season should they both make it?

Partnership is not exactly the best description for their sportscar program. Lat I heard Lola were threatening to sue Aston Martin because they had decided to call the car an Aston Martin and not a Lola. I don't think they will be going into business any time soon.

  • Jon Waldock31/05/2009 at 17:03

Yeah hehe, someone at Aston basically said "it's not really a lola anymore because we've developed it so much"

    Lola got aaaaaaaaangry

No probs. Why not give us a state of play now that we're a third of the way through the season - how you think things will play out on track going forward. Will McLaren claw anything back? Can BMWs double diffuser make any difference? Are Brawn GP just going to run away with the whole thing?

That kind of thing any interest? Not tooooo long of course ;)

  • Nick31/05/2009 at 17:18

I'm back, half dead, inerupted by horses, but i forgot about the live show!

Just time to recover, laugh at about the new comedy f1 team, and eat 2 different kinds of mango... Anything else i missed?

If you have unchecked the box to stop comments, why do you then press the pending button rather than recheck the box?

  • lou31/05/2009 at 20:38

    night all

    night Lukeh, sleep well.

  • Jackie31/05/2009 at 20:38

    ditto

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 20:39

If you have unchecked the box to stop comments, why do you then press the pending button rather than recheck the box?

Because you want to read the comments made in between at your own pace. And then join back in.

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 20:39

    Downloading GP2 as I speak ;)

  • Bassano Clapper31/05/2009 at 20:39

Yup, except it's Back to SidepodTime

  • Christine31/05/2009 at 20:40

Because you want to read the comments made in between at your own pace. And then join back in.

But doesn't pressing the button load them all, rather than ticking the box which loads them a few at a time until you have caught up?

  • me31/05/2009 at 20:41

    replay now up.

  • me31/05/2009 at 20:41

    replay now up.

    damnit. wrong thread.

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 20:41

But doesn't pressing the button load them all, rather than ticking the box which loads them a few at a time until you have caught up?

Well in the old system when you unchecked the box it still kept loading the new comments it just didn't move you. You could scroll down. It didn't stop the loading it just stopped the scrolling.

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 20:42

Well in the old system when you unchecked the box it still kept loading the new comments it just didn't move you. You could scroll down. It didn't stop the loading it just stopped the scrolling.

That's the functionality they want - I think.

  • Stuart Keith ~(VF1)31/05/2009 at 20:42

right off. thanks for helping me pop my pod cherry! ooerr!

  • Pat W31/05/2009 at 20:42

    Bye Lukeh.

But doesn't pressing the button load them all, rather than ticking the box which loads them a few at a time until you have caught up?

It keeps loading them though, which you don't want to do, that's why I turn the tickbox off..

  • Christine31/05/2009 at 20:42

Well in the old system when you unchecked the box it still kept loading the new comments it just didn't move you. You could scroll down. It didn't stop the loading it just stopped the scrolling.

Oh really? I'm not sure we were aware of that.

  • Steven Roy31/05/2009 at 20:43

If you have unchecked the box to stop comments, why do you then press the pending button rather than recheck the box?

Because then you get the pending comments and can scroll through them. If you check the box you go to the bottom of the list every time a new comment comes in

  • me31/05/2009 at 20:44

Well in the old system when you unchecked the box it still kept loading the new comments it just didn't move you. You could scroll down. It didn't stop the loading it just stopped the scrolling.

Oh really? I'm not sure we were aware of that.

    so. just to clarify:

when you untick the checkbox, comments keep coming in, but no scrolling occurs?

that's easy, but it means there will be no pending box in the corner. is that ok?

  • Kathi31/05/2009 at 20:44

Well in the old system when you unchecked the box it still kept loading the new comments it just didn't move you. You could scroll down. It didn't stop the loading it just stopped the scrolling.

That's the functionality they want - I think.

Yes I loved that. But it's no issue if that's not possible anymore. Just wanted to ask.

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 20:44

Oh really? I'm not sure we were aware of that.

    Ah hence the confusion perhaps.

We were using it as a handy way of basically saying, "carry on what you're doing but I'm off for a sec so don't move" then when you came back you could scroll down and then when you catch back up you could check the box again.

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 20:45

that's easy, but it means there will be no pending box in the corner. is that ok?

    Yup. That's it!

LCLT is now favourite son, DD is getting jealous

  • Nick31/05/2009 at 20:47

So to conclude Doohicky rules LCLT drools?

...sorry gotta stop watching TMNT. (and try to be more helpful)

  • Pat W31/05/2009 at 20:47

We were using it as a handy way of basically saying, "carry on what you're doing but I'm off for a sec so don't move" then when you came back you could scroll down and then when you catch back up you could check the box again.

That's exactly how I used the old one. If you wanted to wander off for a mo to get a drink or answer a phone you didn't lose your place.

In fairness though, you can do exactly the same now but in a different way by clicking the pending box and keep doing that until you're at the end, then hit the tick again

Yes I loved that. But it's no issue if that's not possible anymore. Just wanted to ask.

we were trying to merge the functionality of doohickey and lclt, so you didn't need to learn x2 systems. they both effectivly work in the same way now.

however, what you're asking is very simple, it just means pulling a bit of code out. rather than adding anything.

  • Pat W31/05/2009 at 20:47

    oops, double quote

  • Jackie31/05/2009 at 20:48

LCLT is now favourite son, DD is getting jealous

I still prefer DD the reason being that although I can now watch the show and comment on the new LCLT you still have a very narrow window for viewing text

  • me31/05/2009 at 20:48

In fairness though, you can do exactly the same now but in a different way by clicking the pending box and keep doing that until you're at the end, then hit the tick again

yep and that's exactly how we use it.

It's just that it's annoying when you have to press the button several times near the end. My guess was that that would be more annoying during a race.

  • Kathi31/05/2009 at 20:48

While we're on feedback, Mr C, is it possible for clicked links in DD to open up in the browser of choice rather than another DD window?

    For the list, natch

  • Christine31/05/2009 at 20:49

I still prefer DD the reason being that although I can now watch the show and comment on the new LCLT you still have a very narrow window for viewing text

But we made the text bigger for you?

  • Bassano Clapper31/05/2009 at 20:50

is there a wiki page for live commenting solutions feedback?

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 20:50

But now you might get my very mangled sentence in my e-mail: "The UI thing was that you could see that the scroll bar was suddenly moving away from the bottom of the section."

Which doesn't make much sense... But that's how you knew that new comments were coming in the scroll bar was no longer at the bottom.

  • me31/05/2009 at 20:50

While we're on feedback, Mr C, is it possible for clicked links in DD to open up in the browser of choice rather than another DD window?

dd will be rewritten. nothing you currently see will remain, or even look remotely like it currently does.

the new version, will however... rock!!

  • Bassano Clapper31/05/2009 at 20:51

But we made the text bigger for you?

The columns are the same size though

  • Mindenboonhead31/05/2009 at 20:51

What is this? Where am I?

  • RG31/05/2009 at 20:51

You said that about lclt and it did.

We have faith in you sir.

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 20:51

I still prefer DD the reason being that although I can now watch the show and comment on the new LCLT you still have a very narrow window for viewing text

There was no more room in my browser tonight. Not with picture, comments, and commenting box. Well maybe room for a small box of facts about the number of times it takes Mr C to pronounce Domenicali but that's coming :)

  • me31/05/2009 at 20:51

Which doesn't make much sense... But that's how you knew that new comments were coming in the scroll bar was no longer at the bottom.

to a new user that sounds like a bizarre thing to explain. whereas the new version, it's pretty obvious what's going on.

we shall do it this week though.

  • Christine31/05/2009 at 20:52

The columns are the same size though

Oh, that's coming soon, I think. I guess some solutions just don't work for everyone.

I quite like the new version. With the old way of comments appearing, I found myself scrolling frantically to keep up. With the pending box I find I take my time and read more of them.

  • Jackie31/05/2009 at 20:54

But we made the text bigger for you?

It's not the text size as such it's the width of the whole box which is still the same as it was before the revamp. I'm not having a moan, I am quite happy using the DD or does that cost you extra bandwidth?

  • me31/05/2009 at 20:54

Yes. Totally understand the confusion. Perhaps you should have a "tired old hand users who have been hanging around for ages button" ;)

not at all. they both use the same codebase and do the same thing. pick your poison etc ;)

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 20:55

I quite like the new version. With the old way of comments appearing, I found myself scrolling frantically to keep up. With the pending box I find I take my time and read more of them.

What is this time thing of which you speak?

  • me31/05/2009 at 20:56

I quite like the new version. With the old way of comments appearing, I found myself scrolling frantically to keep up. With the pending box I find I take my time and read more of them.

it also reacts exactly the same way as doohickey. which makes me more comfortable.

don't tell me, you'll be mad if we change it? :)

  • Pat W31/05/2009 at 20:57

What is this time thing of which you speak?

No idea, haven't had a chance to check.

  • Christine31/05/2009 at 20:58

I think there is a point at which you have to draw the line though, because live commenting is supposed to be that: live. You can't really blend live functionality with paused functionality as well - that's what ye olde commenting is for.

  • Bassano Clapper31/05/2009 at 20:58

Just an observation: The width of the text box in "have you say" is adjustable. But after you post, it reverts back to it's usual size, in Safari (4 beta)

  • Kathi31/05/2009 at 20:58

don't tell me, you'll be mad if we change it? :)

Don't change because of me. There seem to be far more people that like it the way it is now.

  • me31/05/2009 at 20:59

Just an observation: The width of the text box in "have you say" is adjustable. But after you post, it reverts back to it's usual size, in Safari (4 beta)

that's just a safari thing. it's not meant to be adjustable, yet.

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 20:59

Don't change because of me. There seem to be far more people that like it the way it is now.

I guess as primarly a doohickey-user, I was very happy with the changes. I can see why the lclt dwellers may not prefer it.

As long as it works I'm happy. We've got two good options for use in different situations.

  • Bassano Clapper31/05/2009 at 20:59

that's just a safari thing. it's not meant to be adjustable, yet.

Ha ha, Safari is doing it's own thing :D

I quite like the new version. With the old way of comments appearing, I found myself scrolling frantically to keep up. With the pending box I find I take my time and read more of them.

I just use the doohicky and if im leaving the pc for a sec, open up a quick comment so everything is pending, then its all there when i come back.

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 21:00

it also reacts exactly the same way as doohickey. which makes me more comfortable.

I can understand that. I just think maybe you could have a different button? Maybe I was serious? A pause button with a logo like on a cd player?

  • Pat W31/05/2009 at 21:00

I think there is a point at which you have to draw the line though, because live commenting is supposed to be that: live. You can't really blend live functionality with paused functionality as well - that's what ye olde commenting is for.

This is true - and during races I leave it live, box ticked, because I'm doing other things too. I follow comments as they come in, which yeah can be hard, but during a race there isn't time to do the pausing..

but during a show there can be.

  • Steven Roy31/05/2009 at 21:01

will give think about it. probably says a lot about us / lclt, that we don't even remember what it used to do.

  • Aitch31/05/2009 at 21:03

I like it the old way though. Come on Kathi we can band together and start a revolution!

    Viva la Revolution:)

During the race I may need to leave the room for a moment and I use that pause mode to catch up with what happened. It's a live replay. And you can still comment. I don't tend to use it comment on "Piquet has gone off" but instead on more timeless comments about ducks arriving in the Kitchen or whathaveyou.

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 21:03

will give think about it. probably says a lot about us / lclt, that we don't even remember what it used to do.

During the race I may need to leave the room for a moment and I use that pause mode to catch up with what happened.

    understood.... but...

now you get direct feedback as to how many comments you've missed. rather than seeing that some scrolling is required. then you just click the pending button.

it's exactly the same thing, no?

  • Alex Andronov31/05/2009 at 21:07

it's exactly the same thing, no?

No because you have to press the button, and then scroll and then press the button again and then scroll and then press the button and then scroll.

Everything in the old method is down at the bottom, and now there's a lot of moving about.

  • Christine31/05/2009 at 21:08

No because you have to press the button, and then scroll and then press the button again and then scroll and then press the button and then scroll.

we don't mind extra work, if the system gets better.

this seems like a step backwards to us, the new lclt gives you better info and makes more sense to a new user.

hence why we're asking lots of questions.

Something I personally would find useful is a link in the drop down box on doohickey to the sidpodcast homepage.

Sometimes I want to get to the wiki, drop.io or some other area of the site. The home page has a link to that stuff. Currently I click on a post title and scroll back up to the top of the home page to get to the links

You are correct. The only reason I mention it at all is that the old method required fewer clicks. It's, I suppose, less usual for a new thing to be more complicated than the old way.

But of course we had to work out how the old method worked and I am sure you guys are correct that the new method is more intuitive.

Am I right in thinking that the general opinion is that USF1 and Prodrive are the best-placed of the 5 teams to get in for 2010? It's what I'm thinking anyway. I suppose Lola would get the final 2 spots, don't see why Campos or Litespeed would be chosen ahead of them.

  • Bassano Clapper31/05/2009 at 21:57

    perfectly fair comparison.

But no one wanted to play on the windows machine :D

  • Bassano Clapper31/05/2009 at 21:58

Andy, is it possible for the Google search box in Safari to default to Google UK?

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 21:59

Really? You know how much that V6 actually pumps out, right?

    It's actually a 3.5litre Nissan V6 that chucks out 360hp.

  • Flibster31/05/2009 at 21:59

    It's actually a 3.5litre Nissan V6 that chucks out 360hp.

    Yup.

    Twin Turbo's needed.

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 22:00

    Twin Turbo's needed.

    In a Twingo? That's suicide.

  • Flibster31/05/2009 at 22:01

But what a way to go! :D

Backwards in a ball of flame!

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 22:03

But what a way to go! :D

But I don't want to go yet :(

Looks like Inquisitor is the way to go

  • Flibster31/05/2009 at 22:05

You think with a RWD 350bhp Twingo you wouldn't go quickly?

  • Nick31/05/2009 at 22:06

You think with a RWD 350bhp Twingo you wouldn't go quickly?

    It has airbags!

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 22:06

You think with a RWD 350bhp Twingo you wouldn't go quickly?

With just that and a few other mods, no. With added turbos, yes.

  • Flibster31/05/2009 at 22:07

    It has airbags!

First thing disabled on my cars. Hate them.

I wear glasses so I want to keep my eyesight.

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 22:07

I'm all for big power and all that, but even I know when certain cars have too much.

  • Nick31/05/2009 at 22:08

You could keep them under a helmet a la, le seb

  • Flibster31/05/2009 at 22:09

You could keep them under a helmet a la, le seb

I have done that from time to time. I have Oakleys with prescription lenses

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 22:09

I wear glasses so I want to keep my eyesight.

Glasses and contact lenses actually make your eyesight worse. Think about it - if you wear them all the time you don't ask for a weaker prescription every time you need new ones, do you?

My dad, on the other hand who does wear glasses, only puts them on when driving or watching TV or something like that. Because of this, his eyes actually got stronger and when he lost his glasses and had to get new ones, his presciption had actually come down because of it. I've now started taking mine off at work to try and help them out a bit.

  • Scott Woodwiss31/05/2009 at 22:11

I have done that from time to time. I have Oakleys with prescription lenses

Must have cost you quite a bit. What are they normally, something like £200?

My prescription hasn't changed for 9 years.

I wear my glasses all day every day. Can't see enough without them.

  • Nick31/05/2009 at 22:11

I feel like the only kid in the class without them :(

  • Flibster31/05/2009 at 22:12

Along with everything else I needed.

I find with mine that after a while they adjust and get better without glasses. I practically didn't wear them all night when I was out last night and I got on alright!

  • Bassano Clapper31/05/2009 at 22:13

Least you can watch 3D movies without scratching your eyes

Looks like Inquisitor is the way to go

    Or Glims for Safari 4

  • Pat W31/05/2009 at 22:23

Bassano were you looking for me earlier? I just saw my name mentioned in the live thread...

  • Andy Taylor31/05/2009 at 22:23

My prescription hasn't changed for 9 years.

I wear my glasses all day every day. Can't see enough without them.

I wear rigid lenses and my prescription has changed only slightly over the last ten years which is pretty impressive when others with the same eye condition as me can go through several prescriptions in less than 6 months.

  • Bassano Clapper31/05/2009 at 22:24

Bassano were you looking for me earlier? I just saw my name mentioned in the live thread...

There's some sweary stuff on dropio that may not be appropriate for SPC.

It will be flood lit, and they get to show the track both ways with my idea :D

They could always save it for next year. Would probably have to have fp2 at night aswell

  • Steven Roy31/05/2009 at 23:32

Has anyone signed up for John Cleese's Nigerian Lottery?

Of course. If the great Cleese is running something it should be the law that you have to sign up.

    Don’t be pessimistic now. :P I last missed a live race in… 2003?

The last race I missed was China 2008 because I was at a swimming gala. When I mentioned this, my co-admin at Formula 1 Home declared he was starting a steward's investigation on the basis that my excuse for missing the race wasn't good enough.

When I came back with two gold medals to find the most interesting thing in the race was Raikkonen getting held up a bit while attempting to lap Fisichella, my co-admin gave the steward's verdict:

"No Penalty to be imposed. In fact the stewards would like advice in future on which GPs to avoid watching."
