We're into Saturday now, which is quite a relief because it really has been one of those weeks. For whatever reason, four day weeks just seem to be harder than their five-day counterparts. Anyway, let's see what's happening in the world of Sidepodcast:

  • Ollie is back to blogging, with two posts today - one on Prodrive, and one on the teams conditional entry to 2010. Both are excellent reads, and detail what's going on in the crazy F1 circus at the moment. Like Journeyer said yesterday, regarding the Concorde Agreement - haven't we had enough deadlines already?
  • There is talk that Fuji won't want to host next year's Japanese Grand Prix due to financial troubles. Well, that's what they say, but I wonder whether it is because they saw how well Suzuka did in the first round of the Circuit Cup and realised they can't compete?
  • On the subject of the wiki (because we were?), I have revamped the Website Bugs page. Now, obviously I am not trying to encourage you to find bugs and expand our growing to-do list, but if you do spot something not quite right, then this is the place to log it. The new layout will allow us to track and respond to the problems much better.

I think that'll keep us going for now. Don't forget to let us know what you're up to over the weekend, it looks like the weather is going to hold up in the UK, so you might be... gasp... going outside? Let us know, and I'll see you in the comments.

Thanks, it's good to be back. :) Still catching up though - what a crazy few days it's been! Not least of all a new LCLT thing to play around with.

As much as I'd like to have the 29th again. The laws of time and pysics deny that from happening.

London is amazing! and it was soo warm and sunny. we went for a walk down south bank and it was just lovely. then we got to the studio 45mins early and it turned out we were at the front of the reserve list and only just got in. We got great seats though, just 6 rows from the front! :o and QI recording is amazing and funny, and Steven Fry and Alan Davies are just legends!

Speaking of TV, isn't Top Gear meant to back on the box soon? They usually have a run starting in May, don't they?

QI is a legendary show if you ask me, I'm a big fan and a little jealous! ;)

but if you do spot something not quite right, then this is the place to log it.

Well, I didn't want to mention it, but you asked for it. Your post on the Circuit Character Cup has a little flaw in it, as the first line of the Spa vs Singapore paragraph says "Singapore" where I reckon you meant "Silverstone" :)

Weekend plans include studying for my upcoming exams and watching RG. Roland Garros, that is :-P

Watched the heartbreaker between Dokic and Dementieva last thursday, that was so sad :(

  • Nick29/05/2009 at 23:34

if there was a problem with macbookpro fans when used under heavy load (which mine frequently was), and they've fixed it now, after my mac is already screwed, should i complain?

‘Jeremy, Richard and James try to build the worlds first amphibious f1 car, that can also be turned into a convertable.’

Uhm, isn't that a bit pointless seeing as it has no roof/top to begin with?

  • Joe29/05/2009 at 23:41

Do other folks here have the pc game Grand Prix 2? If you don't you can always download it but anyway. Lap-time contest could be good for any that have it.

  • Scott Woodwiss29/05/2009 at 23:42

Well later on tonight ( as in Saturday night), I shall be going on my first night out with my work colleagues to celebrate one of them leaving. So that'll be fun :)

Plus in the morning, I shall be in the O2 store sorting out a contract for that iPhone ;)

  • Alenyaa29/05/2009 at 23:43

sorted. mind if i ask where you commented alenyaa, cause that shouldn’t happen?

I'm not sure what you mean exactly, so here's my blind stab at an answer: I live in Antwerp and used ye olde commenting :)

Sorry, I had it once, but no memory of ever managing to complete a lap :P

  • Scott Woodwiss29/05/2009 at 23:43

It's Top Gear, half of it is pointless

The main article for Series 13 reveals what will be in the first episode. I won't post details of it here though. Go look for yourself if you want to. All I'll say is they'll be doing a power test of a certain new hot hatch that I love :D

  • Jeremy29/05/2009 at 23:43

Plus in the morning, I shall be in the O2 store sorting out a contract for that iPhone ;)

I'm not here, I did not say this:

  • Scott Woodwiss29/05/2009 at 23:44

    WAIT! Don't buy yet!

    Why?

No likey the LCLT or Doohickey goodness?

See, that's why I'm not in engineering or anything along those lines...

    WAIT! Don't buy yet!

    ooooooooooh!!

    :)

  • Bassano Clapper29/05/2009 at 23:45

    Why?

New iPhone MAY be announced on June 8th!!!

  • Scott Woodwiss29/05/2009 at 23:45

New iPhone MAY be announced on June 8th!!!

...And? Won't really be any different other than it'll have an OLED display.

And as far as I know, it's out July 17th.

  • me29/05/2009 at 23:46

And as far as I know, it's out July 17th.

you sir, will argue with anyone!

    ;)

  • Bassano Clapper29/05/2009 at 23:46

And as far as I know, it's out July 17th.

    No release date yet

Could have better camera, battery life. Larger storage

  • Scott Woodwiss29/05/2009 at 23:47

you sir, will argue with anyone!

Nothing like a healthy debate ;)

  • RG29/05/2009 at 23:47

    Eddie Jordan of Sidepodcast?

    Cept less annyoing.

  • Scott Woodwiss29/05/2009 at 23:47

Could have better camera, battery life. Larger storage

Camera's only supposed to be 3.2MP apparently. And yes, there is a 32GB version coming.

  • Alenyaa29/05/2009 at 23:48

No likey the LCLT or Doohickey goodness?

I don't mind. But I'm using an older model of pc, only a poor student so yeah...

I'm not quite sure it's up to the task :-P

so far as i know may comment from antwerp with impunity

    I certainly will :)

  • me29/05/2009 at 23:48

Nothing like a healthy debate ;)

jeremy quoted an announcement date. not a release date. jeremy likely knows more than you and you'd be wise to listen.

    carry on.

  • Scott Woodwiss29/05/2009 at 23:48

    Cept less annyoing.

    Awwww, thanks you. :P

  • Bassano Clapper29/05/2009 at 23:48

...And? Won't really be any different other than it'll have an OLED display.

Wait one week and see what happens, there'll be plenty of old stock left and may be going cheap

  • me29/05/2009 at 23:48

    Eddie Jordan of Sidepodcast?

    :D

  • me29/05/2009 at 23:49

I'm not quite sure it's up to the task :-P

ahh, fair point. upgrades to ye olde commenting are on the list.

  • Andy Taylor29/05/2009 at 23:49

And as far as I know, it's out July 17th.

No one knows anything for sure. The only thing I'll say is a) new v3.0 software will work on original and 3G iphone and is a free upgrade, b) the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference starts on the 8th June. Both these pieces of information are already public knowledge.

  • Jeremy29/05/2009 at 23:49

And as far as I know, it's out July 17th.

Nobody really knows. Not even me.

I'd buy on the day of announcement when you 'possibly' have the choice of old or new. I say possibly because everyone may be out of stock making my advice bad :-(

  • Scott Woodwiss29/05/2009 at 23:50

    Regarding new iPhone:

    http://www.gsmarena.com/apple_iphone_2009_comes_on_17_july_oled_display_on_board-news-917.php

My mistake. I thought it was coming out then, but that's when the announcment's due.

In 10 days time we should know a lot more. Maybe not, but likely

  • Alenyaa29/05/2009 at 23:51

So, anyone else watching RG this weekend? Again, the tourny, not the poster :-P

I don't expect much news on F1 over the weekend so I just thought I'd give us some alternatives ;)

  • Nick29/05/2009 at 23:51

You mean Roland Garros? Sorry, I'm just guessing here.

  • me29/05/2009 at 23:53

Its an INQ 1 which you probably havent heard of, but i need skype and its super cheapo

in that case, you may be best waiting for the amy-updates that should roll out next week. perfect for older mobiles, but read-only to start with.

  • Alenyaa29/05/2009 at 23:53

I said the same in my moderated post, but I guess most people missed it due to its quest through moderation hell.

  • Andy Taylor29/05/2009 at 23:54

Nobody really knows. Not even me.

Well obviously some people do know about new products in advance, but there are few of them and they don't tend to spill the beans ahead of the official announcements.

  • Alenyaa29/05/2009 at 23:54

You mean Roland Garros? Sorry, I’m just guessing here.

    I do :)

  • Jeremy29/05/2009 at 23:54

I'd like it officially noted that on the 29th of May, I managed to read all the comments left on the daily post of the 28th. It took me all day, and I consider it an achievement. That is all.

  • Scott Woodwiss29/05/2009 at 23:55

    I did :)

    Aha :D

  • Bassano Clapper29/05/2009 at 23:55

How does everybody always manage to quote me before I get a chance to correct my errors?

Am I like the Minardi of SPC?

i need to tell y'all something, but i don't want any sniggering at the back...

am having problems with my ball this evening. christine thinks she might like one so has been pla... practising with mine.

because she's a shortarse not as tall as me, she had to let some air out so her flump feet small feet can touch the ground.

i may have forgotten when i stole it back, and assumed my usual position (complete with glass of wine in one hand), only to drop an extra foot farther than expected covering myself in rose.

    balls.

Peugeot Car Manufacturers (French) commissioned a 'Roland Garros' limited edition version of its 205 model in celebration of the Tennis Tournament that bears his name. The model included special paint and leather interior. Due to the success of this special edition, Peugeot later created Roland Garros editions of its 106, 206, 207, 306 and 806 models

hehe. did you catch the podpanel when alex offered me a drive, but only if i agreed to team-up with sato? i may have capitulated on my comments about him.

  • Journeyer30/05/2009 at 00:21

    That is pretty darn clever!

But... Alia says there's a catch.

Article 2.1 of the Sporting Regulations require all entrants to “observe all the provisions as supplemented or amended of… …the present Sporting Regulations together referred to as “the Regulations”.” Oddly, it doesn’t say they have to observe the present Technical Regulations (only “the Technical Regulations”).

In other words, the condition that the 2009 Regulations must be used in 2010 would contravene Article 2.1. As a result, the FOTA entry has to be rejected according to the Sporting Agreement.

  • RG30/05/2009 at 00:21

How about Taku? Mr C would like that.

With all the new teams, he'll be back. I say Prodrive

  • Nick30/05/2009 at 00:21

    Gosh, I hope not

  • Journeyer30/05/2009 at 00:21

But... Alia says there's a catch.

Question is, will the FIA throw the book at FOTA? Or considering the bigger embarrassment Max may face, just decide to conveniently ignore that rule...

  • Bassano Clapper30/05/2009 at 00:22

    Back alongside Ant?

    Just Ant please

  • Alenyaa30/05/2009 at 00:22

    Well, we'll see what happens.

Ant and Taku, not a bad partnership.

  • Nick30/05/2009 at 00:23

LeMans could be a real good opportunity for him to get his foot in the door

  • Bassano Clapper30/05/2009 at 00:23

Disagree but that'll get me nowhere :)

  • lou30/05/2009 at 00:23

i almost don't want Ant to drive in F1 again..him and croftie are just an awesome pairing... plus we wouldn't hear as much of him *sob*

  • Steven Roy30/05/2009 at 00:24

    Ant and Dec is better

  • lou30/05/2009 at 00:27

haha i choose Jenson :P that wasn't hard. lol but i do like Ant... i just like hearing him commentate, plus he is cool... him not being in the commentary box would be such a shame.

  • Bassano Clapper30/05/2009 at 00:27

FakePiquet tried that - with predictable results.

I think if we found out the real one was doing the same it would explain a lot!

  • Steven Roy30/05/2009 at 01:21

Moto GP at Mugello should be good. That is a really good flowing track.

I am curious how F2 is going to turn out and of course I want to see if the DTM is going to turn into another Audi benefit like the last race.

  • Nick30/05/2009 at 01:21

Ill have a look at the F2 although im sceptical about it, but forgot about motogp or as i have taken to calling it motojeep, so hope to catch that!

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 01:21

Moto GP at Mugello should be good. That is a really good flowing track.

And Rossi would want to redeem himself after the embarrassment at Le Mans...

I am curious how F2 is going to turn out and of course I want to see if the DTM is going to turn into another Audi benefit like the last race.

    Not very.

    Uh-oh... That can't be good...

  • Steven Roy30/05/2009 at 01:23

And Rossi would want to redeem himself after the embarrassment at Le Mans...

Saw a tweet from Suzi Perry saying she was going for drinks with Rossi's mechanics. I hope she is not a bad influence on them.

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 01:24

    Not very.

    Uh-oh... That can't be good...

There are a few good names that got left behind elsewhere when they shouldn't have done. There are a few names that shouldn't be racing at all. Then there's everything in between.

Saw a tweet from Suzi Perry saying she was going for drinks with Rossi's mechanics. I hope she is not a bad influence on them.

Hehehe. I'm afraid she might distract them with her good looks. :D

In saying that, in qualifying the top 12 or more were covered by 1 second. So I could be proved wrong.

Oh Dear, someone messed up the f1 calender... Im going to miss the British GP :(

I'm at the world 20/20 final, so its not too bad, but why have 2 events of such a size on the same day?

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 01:51

so it looks like it's a close field. but a deep field is rather different...

Wickens should walk it. Soucek and one or two of the others were in GP2/WSbR so they should be his main competition. The others are stepping up and I don't know much about them.

  • Nick30/05/2009 at 01:51

well, it has JB on the cover and appears to be a British GP special with thoughts from anyone and everyone. Nigel mansell, Damon Hill, JB and LewHam. A little bit about Ferrari but as yet I see no Heikki.

I think they overcompensate for the fact that domestic firework sales are illegal. They don't do Guy Fawkes night here. Last November when I asked people about it they had no idea what I was talking about.

So the big companies show off then?

To be fair, I hate 5th November, never get a good sleep cos there is always someone who thinks its funny to have a display at 2 in the morning.

  • Jon Waldock30/05/2009 at 09:43

So the big companies show off then?

In china the firework factorys have a display nearly every day to show off what they've been making. It would suck/be great to live next door!!!

  • Amy30/05/2009 at 09:43

So the big companies show off then?

I have lived in my flat since July last year and in that time I have heard 6 different displays. Back home I only ever heard an official display on New Years Eve.

To be fair, I hate 5th November, never get a good sleep cos there is always someone who thinks its funny to have a display at 2 in the morning.

That is a very good point. I also tired of teenage boys who thought it was funny to shoot them at people

I was expecting fireworks in Singapore last year to be honest, after Valencia had their weird daytime ones. I thought a night race + fireworks was pretty self explanatory but maybe the area was too built up since it was the middle of the city.

F3 did slower times in testing, but not that much slower. So F2 are faster....just

  • Jon Waldock30/05/2009 at 10:25

And i'm not sure it matters too much that it's only a bit faster, it's a series of F3 level that dosen't require a £600,000 budget. I think thats great.

This is a bad thing because I am quite a fan of expensive electrical equipment. Thankfully I have never broken anything other than the iPod. The headset doesn't count, it wasn't expensive.

  • Journeyer30/05/2009 at 11:59

    Bradley Smith is awesome!

Bradley Smith has potential, but he needs to be more consistent. I'm surprised at how much the commentators (I think ours are from Eurosport) hype him...

Will definately have to test that out at Silverstone for the WSR.

I like this analysis of F2 vs F3. Not a great start for the new series.

Thanks, that was a good post. I just commented there about the difference between Formula Master which is at Valencia this weekend.

OK, those who have iPhones/iPod Touches - can you recommend any free apps? I don't really want to pay for any just yet.

A real actual notepad? I use Notepad.

Actual real notepad, don't think taking a laptop to a circuit is the best idea. Specially since Croft will inevitably be pouring down.

  • Jon Waldock30/05/2009 at 12:11

    T-4 minutes till F2

Actual real notepad, don't think taking a laptop to a circuit is the best idea. Specially since Croft will inevitably be pouring down.

I pondered it because I missed having live timing then I decided it was a silly idea. I did see 4 or 5 other people in my stand with theirs though :D

  • Scott Woodwiss30/05/2009 at 12:22

Drivethrough for someone already. And it's a British driver.

  • Flibster30/05/2009 at 12:23

Is it me, or do the F2 cars look a bit like the old Lola A1GP cars?

  • me30/05/2009 at 12:24

No idea who the other guy is.

  • Scott Woodwiss30/05/2009 at 12:25

I'm liking how the commentators haven't got the foggiest who is who.

Martin Haven is one of them. He's brilliant.

  • Jon Waldock30/05/2009 at 12:25

Standard fare for Martin Haven :-)

No idea who the other guy is.

He's the F2 test driver, the guy who developed the car

  • Scott Woodwiss30/05/2009 at 12:26

Martin Haven is one of them. He's brilliant.

I first heard him from his Radio Le Mans days, which I'm pretty sure he still does.

  • lou30/05/2009 at 12:26

much better. the other one is clunky flash, i'm a fan.

i like it but it's massive... fitting comments and a video stream on my screen at the same time as that is a bit difficult...

  • Jon Waldock30/05/2009 at 12:26

Start last on the grid...and then get a drive through...his weekends going well

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 12:27

I first heard him from his Radio Le Mans days, which I'm pretty sure he still does.

Not at Le Mans - he's usually covering it for Eurosport although last year he did WTCC that weekend because of their stupid scheduling.

  • me30/05/2009 at 12:27

i like it but it's massive... fitting comments and a video stream on my screen at the same time as that is a bit difficult...

    point taken.

  • RG30/05/2009 at 12:27

Is this a support race for the WTCC?

  • Jon Waldock30/05/2009 at 12:27

Anyone else love how they refer to Max Mosley as an Ex F2 race and constructor...but not as the FIA president lol

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 12:27

i like it but it's massive... fitting comments and a video stream on my screen at the same time as that is a bit difficult...

I've got a TV hooked up to my computer by S-VIDEO cable, video is full screen there ;-)

    ah! Max!

  • Jon Waldock30/05/2009 at 12:27

    yup

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 12:28

Is this a support race for the WTCC?

Officially they are running at the same meeting.

    In reality.... yes.

  • RG30/05/2009 at 12:29

    yup

Shoulda realised with all the banners.

  • Joe30/05/2009 at 12:31

No one watching the FA Cup build-up?

  • Kathi30/05/2009 at 12:31

    Eeek!

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 12:31

No one watching the FA Cup build-up?

Not when there is racing on. I may be persuaded to watch it from whatever the equivalent of 'lights to flag' is.

  • RG30/05/2009 at 12:32

No one watching the FA Cup build-up?

ITV and SKY's build up are both rather poor. Plus there is racing on.

  • Scott Woodwiss30/05/2009 at 12:32

Not when there is racing on. I may be persuaded to watch it from whatever the equivalent of 'lights to flag' is.

Whistle to whistle to whistle to whistle?

  • Kathi30/05/2009 at 12:32

    Eeek!

There should be a warning. MM will appear on your screen in 5s!!

  • Amy30/05/2009 at 12:32

Even though I'm supporting Karjalainen I still haven't worked out which one he is.

  • me30/05/2009 at 12:32

    Eeek!

in fairness to the man. he may be trying to ruin f1, but this series is all down to him.

  • RG30/05/2009 at 12:33

Whistle to whistle to whistle to whistle?

Today will be more like 'Start to Penalties'

  • Jon Waldock30/05/2009 at 12:33

in fairness to the man. he may be trying to ruin f1, but this series is all down to him.

    so far so good :)

  • Scott Woodwiss30/05/2009 at 12:33

    Kickoff to penalties?

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 12:34

John Surtees has a nice electronic stopwatch

  • RG30/05/2009 at 12:34

    Kickoff to penalties?

    That'll be the one.

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 12:34

in fairness to the man. he may be trying to ruin f1, but this series is all down to him.

I have nothing against the series but it isn't a Formula 1 feeder.

  • Jon Waldock30/05/2009 at 12:35

John Surtees has a nice electronic stopwatch

Those ones are rather cool, you can do times of 4 cars at once

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 12:35

    not directly anyway

  • Jon Waldock30/05/2009 at 12:35

I have nothing against the series but it isn't a Formula 1 feeder.

I'm not sure that it needs to be

  • Joe30/05/2009 at 12:35

Not when there is racing on. I may be persuaded to watch it from whatever the equivalent of 'lights to flag' is.

Meh. Not F1 so I don't care about it.

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 12:36

I have nothing against the series but it isn't a Formula 1 feeder.

I'm not sure that it needs to be

That's sort of what I mean - it will feed into GP2. Max is going to be disappointed.

  • Jon Waldock30/05/2009 at 12:36

Meh. Not F1 so I don't care about it.

for actual racing this is better

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 12:36

Meh. Not F1 so I don't care about it.

Automatic dismissal without even looking at it? Pfffft

  • Jon Waldock30/05/2009 at 12:37

That's sort of what I mean - it will feed into GP2. Max is going to be disappointed.

it's better than F3, and a 3rd of the price, i think drivers could be picked up from it

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 12:38

it's better than F3, and a 3rd of the price, i think drivers could be picked up from it

They will. But not directly into F1. F1 will pay attention to who is doing well but will insist on a year in GP2 - unless the driver really is THAT good.

  • RG30/05/2009 at 12:38

Ah adverts, need a new feed

  • Jon Waldock30/05/2009 at 12:38

They will. But not directly into F1. F1 will pay attention to who is doing well but will insist on a year in GP2 - unless the driver really is THAT good.

  • Jon Waldock30/05/2009 at 12:47

If the car retires down to a mechanical fault and not the driver i wonder if the driver has to pay to repair it

He was talking about Palmer though - he won the Jim Clark Cup, That year Tyrrell won the Colin Chapman Trophy.

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 13:03

Hmm, see one disadvantage of having a centrally-run championship with no teams is there's nobody in parc ferme to celebrate with..

He was talking about Palmer though - he won the Jim Clark Cup, That year Tyrrell won the Colin Chapman Trophy.

  • Amy30/05/2009 at 13:07

    i second.

me too but not of my wonky connection that meant I missed the end :(

    yesss

  • RG30/05/2009 at 13:07

    Vasi : 6

    Aleshin : 5

    Joussi : 4

    Bortolotti : 3

    BOOO!

    Mosley presenting the trophies!

  • Christine30/05/2009 at 13:08

I only caught the end of the race, looks ok. All I can say is that I'm glad we're not doing an F2 podcast, because some of those names are tricksy! I'm sticking with Brundle.

  • RG30/05/2009 at 13:08

    what a crap trophy

Seems the trophy was on a budget as well. Probably a fiver from Argos.

  • Jon Waldock30/05/2009 at 13:10

That was the first race, give it a bit of a chance

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 13:10

F2 was okay - less racy than GP2 for me, though...

Well it depends. I've seen amazing GP2 races, I've seen terrible processional ones.

  • Journeyer30/05/2009 at 13:10

Hmmm... Chelsea-Everton? Or WTCC Valencia? Hmmm...

  • Journeyer30/05/2009 at 13:11

If you wish to avoid the football, there is MotoGP 250cc qualifying on the BBC red button and ITV4 is showing MotorsportUK followed by a review of Le Mans 2008.

  • RG30/05/2009 at 16:26

Like crashes, i had to sit there for 45 minutes watching football. aaarrrghhh i need some wheel related sports...i wonder if that Le Mans review is on the itv player :D

    45 minutes had 2 goals.

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 16:26

I'm still trying to sell the Fiat, and the Focus is brilliant :-)

In fact I might go and give the interior a bit of a clean, the back seats+floor anyway. I've been indoors all day.

When I bought it there were horrible marks all over the floor. Dirt or something.

  • RG30/05/2009 at 16:26

yeah lost it 6-4. The commentators are talking about how the tournament will be ruined if they both lose today :D

    But Murray's still in it...

If they both lose, we might end up with Nadal-Murray.

  • Jon Waldock30/05/2009 at 16:26

    45 minutes had 2 goals.

F2 race was 40 minutes and had lots of overtaking

  • Amy30/05/2009 at 16:27

    But Murray's still in it...

hes on Rafas side though. They're saying how boring the final will be with no decent challenger on this half of the draw.

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 16:27

Like crashes, i had to sit there for 45 minutes watching football. aaarrrghhh i need some wheel related sports...i wonder if that Le Mans review is on the itv player :D

I was thinking more like pit stops and side by side racing.. if you watch for the crashes you shouldn't be here.

  • RG30/05/2009 at 16:27

hes on Rafas side though. They're saying how boring the final will be with no decent challenger on this half of the draw.

    Oh really?

  • Alex Andronov30/05/2009 at 16:28

F1 is the worst sport in the world!

I did have a big fun argument with a friend on this subject. You can play football against one other person. But motorsport by it's definition is always a sport because it requires team play.

That's my reasoning why it is the best.

  • Jon Waldock30/05/2009 at 16:28

I was thinking more like pit stops and side by side racing.. if you watch for the crashes you shouldn't be here.

haha, i don't watch it at all, but the crashes are the only action i've seen before, i cant deal with ovals

  • Amy30/05/2009 at 16:28

    Oh really?

yep, Rafa and Murray are set to meet in the semis

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 16:29

haha, i don't watch it at all, but the crashes are the only action i've seen before, i cant deal with ovals

Ovals can be fun.. the right ones. IndyCars at Milwaukee are fun, that's tomorrow.

  • RG30/05/2009 at 16:29

yep, Rafa and Murray are set to meet in the semis

Does he have a hope in hell of beating Rafa?

  • Journeyer30/05/2009 at 16:29

yep, Rafa and Murray are set to meet in the semis

Ooooh... who'd be left there then, I wonder? Hmmm...

  • Amy30/05/2009 at 16:30

Does he have a hope in hell of beating Rafa?

no, people are shocked he has made it to the first round. He's not a natural clay player.

  • Alex Andronov30/05/2009 at 16:30

I'm still trying to sell the Fiat, and the Focus is brilliant :-)

In fact I might go and give the interior a bit of a clean, the back seats+floor anyway. I've been indoors all day.

My brother had a fiat same a yours and got rid. My brother in law to be has a focus and swears by it.

  • Journeyer30/05/2009 at 16:30

I did have a big fun argument with a friend on this subject. You can play football against one other person. But motorsport by it's definition is always a sport because it requires team play.

Did your friend bring up the mechanical factor only available in motorsport?

  • Amy30/05/2009 at 16:30

no, people are shocked he has made it to the first round. He's not a natural clay player.

and by first i mean fourth

    So tennis inst a sport?

  • RG30/05/2009 at 16:31

    So tennis inst a sport?

    Or golf. Or Athletics?

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 16:31

no, people are shocked he has made it to the first round. He's not a natural clay player.

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 16:32

My brother had a fiat same a yours and got rid. My brother in law to be has a focus and swears by it.

My only worry is the Focus has done 120,000 miles. But it is a diesel.

The Fiat has only done 62k but keeps needing money spent on it.

  • Journeyer30/05/2009 at 16:32

Made it to the first round? As in, he entered?

She said she meant fourth. ;)

  • RG30/05/2009 at 16:32

no, people are shocked he has made it to the first round. He's not a natural clay player.

I've heard that. It still some achivement if he can get to the semi's in that case.

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 16:33

and by first i mean fourth

    heheh

  • Alex Andronov30/05/2009 at 16:35

    So tennis inst a sport?

Well it was quite an involved argument. But origionally my friend was saying that F1 wasn't a sport because of the mechanical element. I experemented by mentioning football boot and tennis racket design but in the end we were focused on the idea that sports are oranised things like FA cup and the Premiership. But tennis and football can be games. Motorsport can't be a game. Tennis and football can be both.

  • Nick30/05/2009 at 16:37

. Motorsport can't be a game. Tennis and football can be both.

What about racing between traffic lights?

  • Alex Andronov30/05/2009 at 16:38

What about racing between traffic lights?

It's not the same because you can't play by the same rules. I reckon.

  • Alianora La Canta30/05/2009 at 16:44

    Question is, will the FIA throw the book at FOTA? Or considering the bigger embarrassment Max may face, just decide to conveniently ignore that rule… {Comment #234}

I think Max is beyond embarrassment, unless it diminishes his power. Sadly :(

  • Journeyer30/05/2009 at 16:45

I think Max is beyond embarrassment, unless it diminishes his power. Sadly :(

Would he really want to say that, "I have five teams for Formula 1 in 2010?" While 9-team FOTA is setting up a breakaway championship?

    I don't think so. Bernie certainly wouldn't.

  • Amy30/05/2009 at 16:54

Hmmm... Interesting. Is he the only hope now for a thrilling final against whoever comes out on the other side (prob. Rafa)?

easily. The most interesting games now are probably on the other side, assuming Rafa wins them both, with Rafa v Verdasco and Rafa v Murray

  • Journeyer30/05/2009 at 16:55

    I think they need to make F1 Racing out of cotton wool or something. It is too loud when it falls through my letterbox. {Comment #340}

Alternatively, get a sturdy wooden letterbox and get the post delivery operative to utilise that instead. Works for us, which is just as well - if there were a letter slot in my front door, the post would land in a collection of plants...

It is exactly one of those jokes.

    We get so little, that to be honest, I could wait until Monday. But it’s probably useful for lots of people. {Comment #351}

It was certainly useful for me this week - eight political party leaflets accompanied the F1 Racing, ready for the European Election on June 4th. Maybe I might be able to figure out the difference between the parties by election day...

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 17:00

Went outside. 1001 Stain Remover did a fairly pathetic job of removing the plastic welded to the carpet, I think it was chewing gum in a former life but it is hard to tell.

I got one addressed to me. I think the landlord (who lives in the same house) must have got all of the 'to the household' ones.

  • Alianora La Canta30/05/2009 at 17:02

    I got out of bed when the doorbell rang, fumbling to put on my dressing gown, opened the door to the postman…he took one look at me and went “WAKEY WAKEEEY!!!!” {Comment #363}

My post deliverer would never dare do this because the post frequently arrives between 1pm and 2:30pm. In other words, not only is everyone in my house awake by then, but we're eating or have eaten lunch!

He won't mind because he will simply do everything in his power to make the breakaway collapse on its face ASAP if that happens.

He also reckons a breakaway is unlikely because he thinks the manufacturers can't organise a drunken student party in a brewery...

With Federer only 4-4 in Set #3, you may be up for a while yet... and it's approaching 4 AM...

    no. I heart Jankovic ;)

  • Journeyer30/05/2009 at 17:37

Do you think that Justine's [absence] this year has affected the season?

I know it's for Amy, but yes, I think so. Between the Williamses not playing all year and Sharapova's injury, women's tennis hasn't had much of a gripping story as of late...

  • Amy30/05/2009 at 17:37

ESPN's headline, BTW: "Fourgone Conclusions" - yep, it's for Novak.

    I still prefer "Shockovic"

The commentators just said 'What time is it in Melbourne? Shouldn't you be asleep?' in response to someone from Melbourne who emailed them. So I'm not the only one up waiting :D

  • Amy30/05/2009 at 17:38

Do you think that Justine's absense this year has affected the season?

no to be honest I don't really follow womens tennis outside of Slams whereas I follow the mens all year. Maybe this means it is affecting the season, because womens tennis is quite boring these days and it never used to be.

  • Alex Andronov30/05/2009 at 17:38

    no. I heart Jankovic ;)

Justine is my fav. It's upset me this year. None of that awesome backhand.

Yeah, what i've heard is that FOTA next year will be FOTA this year

Interesting, doesn't make a very solid Formula One Teams Association if all the teams aren't part of it. I'm assuming Williams' suspension will be lifted after June 12th

  • Alex Andronov30/05/2009 at 18:07

But teasing makes it so much more fun! :P

    Absolutely. :)

  • Alex Andronov30/05/2009 at 18:08

Yeah, what i've heard is that FOTA next year will be FOTA this year

    What about Williams?

  • Bassano Clapper30/05/2009 at 18:09

    What about Williams?

    That was a strategic suspension

Otherwise they'd have been kicked out

  • Alex Andronov30/05/2009 at 18:11

    That was a strategic suspension

It was so shortly before they all joined made me think it was what pushed the rest over the edge.

If it had been up for discussion why wouldn't Williams have waited a few days?

  • Bassano Clapper30/05/2009 at 18:12

If it had been up for discussion why wouldn't Williams have waited a few days?

Because Williams had to sign up unconditionally as Bernie's already advanced their TV money

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 18:12

Prodrive, Lola and USGP would be my choices

I agree, but wouldn't object to iSport if they enter.

  • Alex Andronov30/05/2009 at 18:13

Because Williams had to sign up unconditionally as Bernie's already advanced their TV money

Ferrari in the same situation. I guess they could have afforded to lose the money.

  • Bassano Clapper30/05/2009 at 18:14

I agree, but wouldn't object to iSport if they enter.

But they haven't submitted an entry have they?

  • Nick30/05/2009 at 18:14

. I'm assuming Williams' suspension will be lifted after June 12th

I'm assuming more brinkmanship by max and bernie and doubt that the teams will be officially entered by june 13th, so they could be out a while longer.

  • Jon Waldock30/05/2009 at 18:14

I agree, but wouldn't object to iSport if they enter.

They don't have any car making experience...so i'm not sure

  • Bassano Clapper30/05/2009 at 18:14

Ferrari in the same situation. I guess they could have afforded to lose the money.

And they have larger bargaining chips

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 18:15

I agree, but wouldn't object to iSport if they enter.

But they haven't submitted an entry have they?

Not publically, I keep wondering if they actually did but have kept it quiet.

  • Bassano Clapper30/05/2009 at 18:15

I'm assuming more brinkmanship by max and bernie and doubt that the teams will be officially entered by june 13th, so they could be out a while longer.

    Announce six teams only?

  • Nick30/05/2009 at 18:17

    Announce six teams only?

No just announce 3 new ones, Williams and have the others in some sort of limbo.

Or if Max is trying to be funny; 4 new teams

  • Bassano Clapper30/05/2009 at 18:18

No just announce 3 new ones, Williams and have the others in some sort of limbo.

If he only announces 3 then it's a safe bet that 10 more will follow. If he want to play games, delay the annoouncement

  • Nick30/05/2009 at 18:21

If he only announces 3 then it's a safe bet that 10 more will follow. If he want to play games, delay the annoouncement

He said he cant delay any later than june 12th for the new teams sake, so i cant envisage him not telling them who is in on that day

  • Bassano Clapper30/05/2009 at 18:22

He said he cant delay any later than june 12th for the new teams sake, so i cant envisage him not telling them who is in on that day

Unless he confirms them in private, anything is possible with that guy

  • me30/05/2009 at 18:24

just a thought. but we only know that a certain number of new teams have submitted entries, because they've told autosport that they have.

is there a chance other new teams have also done the same but are preferring to keep quiet for whatever reason?

what if max actually has 11 or more new teams to announce?

  • Bassano Clapper30/05/2009 at 18:26

what if max actually has 11 or more new teams to announce?

If the rules stay the same, which isn't guaranteed, the maximum is 13 teams isn't it?

Surely you'd not want more than 3 new teams. The risk of folding in the next 3 years would be too high

  • Jon Waldock30/05/2009 at 18:28

is there a chance other new teams have also done the same but are preferring to keep quiet for whatever reason?

    it's quite possibly yes

  • me30/05/2009 at 18:28

Surely you'd not want more than 3 new teams. The risk of folding in the next 3 years would be too high

don't know. i realise the current teams have guaranteed places, however, if max can disqualifying their entry on some technicality or other, he can pretty much do what he wants, can't he?

  • Jon Waldock30/05/2009 at 18:28

what if max actually has 11 or more new teams to announce?

then he has one hell of a decision

  • Nick30/05/2009 at 18:29

is there a chance other new teams have also done the same but are preferring to keep quiet for whatever reason?

I think its unlikely, they want to be as high profile as possible to attract personell and sponsors, unless they have them lined up already

Unless he confirms them in private, anything is possible with that guy

They would need to be getting sponsership and hiring people so it would leek out very quickly

  • Bassano Clapper30/05/2009 at 18:29

..if max can disqualifying their entry on some technicality or other, he can pretty much do what he wants, can't he?

    Night Amy.

Today has gone by impressively quickly. I've done nothing constructive other than try and get a bit of dirt off my car, and change the bed sheets. I've really enjoyed not using my brain.

  • Bassano Clapper30/05/2009 at 18:33

    Sleep tight Amy

    [Fingers crossed]

I don't know how she does it

  • me30/05/2009 at 18:35

They would need to be getting sponsership and hiring people so it would leek out very quickly

would be much easier to do all of the above with a confirmed entry.

  • Bassano Clapper30/05/2009 at 18:36

If Briatore does buy Renault F1, would he have to race under that name for 2010 if the deal didn't go through soon?

Would Max/Bernie hold back tv money a la Brawn?

  • RG30/05/2009 at 18:37

Right, I must go to a family party. I have no idea who its for and only found out about this morning.

If there is any singing and I'm involved, I'm staying quiet this time.

  • Nick30/05/2009 at 18:37

would be much easier to do all of the above with a confirmed entry.

Yeah, but i cant see teams just coming out of nowhere, maybe one, but keeping something quiet around F1 is nearly impossible, and there is nothing really to be gained by putting in all the effort to do it secretly

  • Bassano Clapper30/05/2009 at 18:41

If there is any singing and I'm involved, I'm staying quiet this time.

    He he, wise words

  • me30/05/2009 at 18:44

If Briatore does buy Renault F1, would he have to race under that name for 2010 if the deal didn't go through soon?

depends how nice the other teams were feeling.

Would Max/Bernie hold back tv money a la Brawn?

question is, would he donate his purse to everyone else, as he suggested brawn should?

  • Bassano Clapper30/05/2009 at 18:45

question is, would he donate his purse to everyone else, as he suggested brawn should?

Good point, this is Flav, so no :D

    there is a show, yup.

About 4 times bigger, some films have special IMAX prints (like Batman) that have 'taller' shots that fill the room. That's how it feels. I experienced a little vertigo at the Batman showing, no kidding

Wow. Great circuit graphics in that game too.

  • Lukeh30/05/2009 at 19:49

That's crazy. Did you also have to design everything yourself or can you download and insert things?

You get about 700 or so preset objects to work with, including about 100 letters (alphabet in different styles, you can't type custom bits, just place letters in tandom), the shapes race from basic shapes like squares and circles to actual designs like racedriver silohuettes, racing style graphics and even animal shapes. It's just a matter of finding the right way to dissguise everything you use and to have a lot of patience.

domenicali has been listening to flibster. on the subject of fota's proposed cost savings:

"Then, further reductions have been defined in the area of aerodynamics, with restrictions imposed on the amount of development work, for example, restricting the number of different wings that can be used during the course of the championship."

    I scored 18 - am a rally driver apparently.

ooh, they've seen your driving too?

    I scored 18 - am a rally driver apparently.

    I got 20 - also a rally driver.

  • Nick30/05/2009 at 20:29

ooh, they've seen your driving too?

    BURN!

Although i got 20, and the same result, i guess my results were tightly tied because apparently F1 + Cheeseburger = rally

  • Christine30/05/2009 at 20:29

ooh, they've seen your driving too?

It says: “You’re one of the most experienced and skilful drivers on the planet. To you, tarmac is for wimps. You’re a rally driver.”

    So hush it.

    heavy right foot?

  • Pat W30/05/2009 at 20:32

So.. does anyone else get annoyed when people do overtaking wrongly? Like.. burn up behind someone's bumper, then wait for passing traffic to disappear, then move into the other lane and accelerate.. 'Cos that really annoys me.

  • Jon Waldock30/05/2009 at 20:32

It says: “You’re one of the most experienced and skilful drivers on the planet. To you, tarmac is for wimps. You’re a rally driver.”

christine may have spotted something of a typo in this AUTOSPORT article:

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/75683

on the subject of the concorde agreement, howett says:

Maybe there's a reluctance to sign it, but I personally wouldn't see any good reason to enter into the agreement in the interests of all parties.

    presumably he actually said:

Maybe there's a reluctance to sign it, but I personally wouldn't see any good reason NOT to enter into the agreement in the interests of all parties.

otherwise, we're lost as to whose side he's on?

It's August 7/8/9, so 2 months really. alot of it will be adhoc, but i'm going to research the drivers and teams as much as possible, its hard because its a club race effectively, not many websites!!

  • Flibster30/05/2009 at 21:49

    ah that's horrible :(

Just wait - same tomorrow and probably next weekend as well - certainly not going to be around for qualifying. :(

  • Bassano Clapper30/05/2009 at 22:29

Theres lots of those types of jobs that are lacking now; Plumber, Electrician, etc

But you can learn those in a few months

  • Jon Waldockjobs30/05/2009 at 22:30

Pah, proper Electricians need 3 years to learn absolutely everything, same with plumers i suspect

  • Bassano Clapper30/05/2009 at 22:31

Maybe, but you can fast track it a lot quicker. Even when qualified you'll still be learning

Wow, found a site which has a staggering amount of mods for Grand Prix 2. Got a 2009 carset earlier, and put Valencia and Brands Hatch in my game for starters, can't get Singapore working at the moment though.

Yeah, game came out in 1996 and is still very good. The only ones better than it are really the 2 versions which came after it from the same series. I like how there's carsets from other series, like GP2 and A1GP.

Looking around the site, some of the stuff looks really good. Almost makes me wanna get the game out.

    It even has Croft :)

Do it! Hell we could have a lap time contest. It's easy to change the cars, tracks and stuff too. Well, if it works.......*glares at Singapore* ;)

I'll have a look in the morning.

  • Joe30/05/2009 at 22:59

I'll have a look in the morning.

If you can't find it, you can always download it anyway (legally of course).

I'm now going to get as much of the 2009 calender as I can for GP2. The game has 16 tracks and you can't add over 16, so 3 on the 2009 calender won't be on it, annoyingly.Catalunya will be one absentee.

  • RG30/05/2009 at 23:01

    Can ya. I'll take note.

If I were to get rid of three, Malaysia, Bahrain and Hungary I think.

  • Joe30/05/2009 at 23:03

    Pssh, Malaysia rules. :(

Maybe Hungary aye. Bahrain? Nah, it's dull but there's worse on the calender.

  • Joe30/05/2009 at 23:04

Give that a try, dunno if it works. Not where I got it from, but where I got it from, you have to sign up to some crap and download other crap, it's hassle really.

  • RG30/05/2009 at 23:15

    The big difference this time is that the teams agree. {Comment #819}

For how long? This is what Max is sceptical about...

  • Alianora La Canta31/05/2009 at 12:55

    I’ve not met many of them, do they exist? {Comment #1055}

Yes. I knew what I wanted to do at university three years before I applied. Out of 60 students on my course at the start of first year, I was one of only five who had any idea what they wanted to do after the course (one of the other four became my best friend later on). This, along with the amorphous nature of the course, was cited as a leading reason for why the class only numbered 14 by the start of third year (the other eventually decided they wanted to do something better achieved by studying some other subject).

  • Alianora La Canta31/05/2009 at 12:59

    And was said early, a large portion will change their mind or regret it {Comment #1074}

It's not getting a job as a librarian I regret. It's getting a job in the first place - I like being a librarian but hate the attitudes employers have towards their employees, and employees have towards each other.

  • Alianora La Canta31/05/2009 at 13:01

    i clearly know nothing of this. do they not all have day jobs first? {Comment #1087}

They do - as members of the clergy receiving a stipend, as a general rule.
