The end of the week is upon us, and so, almost is the end of May. I'm not entirely sure where the year is going - I'm convinced someone  is stealing it but I have no proof. Anyway, here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • FOTA have come up with their plan to present to the FIA, and if looks are anything to go by, the governing body might just be agreeable to it. We reach the deadline today, so something really needs to be sorted out as soon as possible, or we may see some of our teams not making next year's championship simply because it will be a case of first come, first served.
  • It's the final heat of the first round in the Circuit Cup and that can only mean one thing - voting time again. These final matchups will see the fate of Monaco and Nurburgring decided, and it's in your hands. Head on over and make your voice heard.
  • If you haven't visited in a while, head on over to F1 Big Picture. Yesterday's image depicts a flying Vettel at Monza in celebration of his Lorenzo Bandini award win. He'll be picking up the trophy on Sunday, in the style of Kubica (ie. driving 12km in an F1 car - madness).

That'll do for now. As we are rushing headlong into the weekend, let us know if you have any exciting plans, and equally let us know if you don't. I will see you in the comments.

Racing team ING Renault tested their 200mph car on the runway at Imperial War Museum (IWM) Duxford for the second time in as many weeks, yesterday (Wednesday).

Now, people living in the surrounding villages have raised concerns about the loud noise generated by the Grand Prix team's 2009 championship car, known as the R29.

    One armed drummers?

discovering you'll never be as good a drummer as a chap with one whole limb less than you, is a tough lesson to learn i'll have you know.

  • Journeyer29/05/2009 at 01:11

Internet keeps cutting out again. And the ISP has no idea why. The problem comes and goes away on its own.

I'll never get to the end of the video at this rate... :(

  • me29/05/2009 at 01:11

discovering you'll never be as good a drummer as a chap with one whole limb less than you, is a tough lesson to learn i'll have you know.

    Click Y or N

  • Nick29/05/2009 at 01:15

i have half a can of air?

    Whats in the other half?

  • Bassano Clapper29/05/2009 at 01:15

    Whats in the other half?

    Un-branded energy drink

  • me29/05/2009 at 01:16

    Whats in the other half?

    bloody good question!

  • Steven Roy29/05/2009 at 01:17

    Whats in the other half?

Stuff to push the air out

  • Steven Roy29/05/2009 at 01:18

    Good night Lou

  • Bassano Clapper29/05/2009 at 01:19

Stuff to push the air out

Surely that'd be included in the 'half a can of air' package unless they state "delivery not included"?

  • RG29/05/2009 at 01:21

Surely that'd be included in the 'half a can of air' package unless they state "delivery not included"?

That makes no sense to me. So I declare I'm too tired and shall now go to sleep. Ciao

You are a sad addict. Just like the rest of us

  • Bassano Clapper29/05/2009 at 01:27

If you had half a can of air that was meant for public 'consumption' then you would need a means to propel it from said can - to be salesworthy

A full can would have the same means, only for twice the amount

    Thus

i have half a can of air?

    Whats in the other half?

    Would be illogical

  • me29/05/2009 at 01:28

If you had half a can of air that was meant for public 'consumption' then you would need a means to propel it from said can - to be salesworthy

i had a full can. but used half.

  • Bassano Clapper29/05/2009 at 01:28

i heart def leppard. Saw them live last year. I wish i was at home. I am back to mobile commenting

I used to like you :D

[Mr C's still on the naughty step anyway]

  • Bassano Clapper29/05/2009 at 01:29

i had a full can. but used half.

So it is half a can of air [inculdes propellant]

  • Journeyer29/05/2009 at 01:31

Too annoyed with my Internet right now. It cuts out every 2 minutes.

Yet the ISP can't even fix it. :(

  • Steven Roy29/05/2009 at 01:31

So it is half a can of air [inculdes propellant]

Well really it is a can with half the normal amount of air and probably less thna half the normal amount of propellant

  • Bassano Clapper29/05/2009 at 01:31

If it makes any difference, to an engineer:

A glass is neither half-empty nor half-full but the incorrect sized vessel for the liquid to be contained

  • Nick29/05/2009 at 01:32

So it is half a can of air [inculdes propellant]

But what if one were to used compressed air as the propellent?

  • Journeyer29/05/2009 at 01:32

A glass is neither half-empty nor half-full but the incorrect sized vessel for the liquid to be contained

But what if it was half-empty/full because it had been half-consumed?

  • Bassano Clapper29/05/2009 at 01:32

Well really it is a can with half the normal amount of air and probably less thna half the normal amount of propellant

And yet probably ony fills less than 1/10th of the volume it resides in

  • Bassano Clapper29/05/2009 at 01:33

But what if it was half-empty/full because it had been half-consumed?

    Change vessels :D

  • Bassano Clapper29/05/2009 at 01:34

But what if it was half-empty/full because it had been half-consumed?

And to think, this conversation started because Mr C's laptop gets a bit noisey

    guilty.

  • Steven Roy29/05/2009 at 01:37

And yet probably ony fills less than 1/10th of the volume it resides in

The air is at pressure so it will fill the full volume regardless whether it is a full can or empty can

  • Steven Roy29/05/2009 at 01:38

And to think, this conversation started because Mr C's laptop gets a bit noisey

I thought it was getting hot not noisy

  • me29/05/2009 at 01:38

The air is at pressure so it will fill the full volume regardless whether it is a full can or empty can

any idea why it gets cold?

  • Nick29/05/2009 at 01:39

any idea why it gets cold?

The air was put in their on a cold day

  • Paul29/05/2009 at 01:39

I thought it was getting hot not noisy

Mr C could try pouring unnamed energy drink in all the laptop holes and see if that quiets it down a bit

  • me29/05/2009 at 01:39

I thought it was getting hot not noisy

it's noisy, driving me nuts and affecting recording.

it's noisy, because it gets hot so the fans are working overtime.

  • Steven Roy29/05/2009 at 01:39

any idea why it gets cold?

It's due to the pressure change as the can empties

  • me29/05/2009 at 01:39

The air was put in their on a cold day

    heheheheh.

  • Bassano Clapper29/05/2009 at 01:39

any idea why it gets cold?

    Transfer of energy

  • Steven Roy29/05/2009 at 01:40

It's due to the pressure change as the can empties

It's Boyle's Law or Charles's Law or the other on. You have a constant volume and a reducing pressure so the temperature drops.

  • Paul29/05/2009 at 01:41

It's Boyle's Law or Charles's Law or the other on. You have a constant volume and a reducing pressure so the temperature drops.

    Me's law?

  • Nick29/05/2009 at 01:41

I belive it is because particles in the expanding air are suddenly able to absorb heat energy, and remove heat from the surrounding environment.

  • Bassano Clapper29/05/2009 at 01:41

And yet probably ony fills less than 1/10th of the volume it resides in

The air is at pressure so it will fill the full volume regardless whether it is a full can or empty can

I was referring to atmospheric pressure, not that within said can, sorry for any confusion

  • Nick29/05/2009 at 01:42

Although i know nothing of science...

  • Steven Roy29/05/2009 at 01:42

I belive it is because particles in the expanding air are suddenly able to absorb heat energy, and remove heat from the surrounding environment.

The particles stay the same size but there are fewer collisions happening so less energy

  • Steven Roy29/05/2009 at 01:43

I was referring to atmospheric pressure, not that within said can, sorry for any confusion

The joy of sidepodcast is that we are in a constant state of confusion about everything regardless how simple

  • Nick29/05/2009 at 01:44

OK this is really getting annoying, for some reason my wireless keyboard and mouse intermittently loose signal with the pc, so i cant click or miss letters...

Why is it that every once in a while, I notice the phase "Sidepodcast International Meet Up" and then never seem to find it again? Not to raise my hopes, but there is quite a protion of your audience that is not in Europe, and left out for that reason, you know...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)29/05/2009 at 05:48

f you haven't visited in a while, head on over to F1 Big Picture. Yesterday's image depicts a flying Vettel at Monza in celebration of his Lorenzo Bandini award win. He'll be picking up the trophy on Sunday, in the style of Kubica (ie. driving 12km in an F1 car - madness).

Can I just say that I visit it all the time as they make for great wallpaper pics - I have the Barrichello at Monaco one up right now and my workmates all think it was a great pic!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)29/05/2009 at 05:51

Exactly, have to wave goodbye to Megan Fox soon, not sure who Ms June is on FHM calendar

    I'm saying goodbye to:

    - Kimi on my giant Shell Ferrari calendar

    - Roughneck on my Rig calendar

    - Carol the secretary throwing a stapler at PHB's head on my Dilbert Calendar

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)29/05/2009 at 05:52

    I have only had 4½ hours :(

  • Scott Woodwiss29/05/2009 at 06:07

Morning all, just about to leave so thought I'd drop in very quickly.

Yup, looking at those comments - Mr C's in trouble, isn't he? :D

Oh and for the poll - I got 5 hours sleep last night, but I can get anywhere between 5 and 10 depending on the day and what shift I'm working. At weekends I can sleep from midnight/1 in the morning until 9/10am easy :D

  • Amy29/05/2009 at 06:08

I swing wildly between 2 hours a night and 16 or so ;) I probably average a bedtime of 2.30am and how long I sleep depends on whether I start work at 7.30 or 10.30.

    http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/05/29/so-where-are-we-at/

    Some thoughts from Joe. FTA:

However, it is worth noting the decision taken on Wednesday night to end all further Japanese GPs at Toyota-owned Mount Fuji, leaving the race to Suzuka once again. The Mt Fuji experience was not very rewarding with bad weather disrupting the event in 2008. F1 will return to Suzuka without too much anguish, particularly as reports suggest that it has now been brought up to standard with major work having been completed in recent months.

Now that's news to me! Did anybody else know about this?

I used to like you :D

How can you hate Def Leppard?! Or is admitting my love of hair metal and power ballads a bad thing?

When I saw them they were supported by Cheap Trick. It was awesome but I was the youngest there by about 20 years.

intriguing....Fuji was awesome in concept, but (i gather) there was just a little bit of water and everyone got wet. maybe Toyota wants to leave F1....

I liked them a while back and got to see them at Live8 in Phil in 2005 - i was passing through the us and without trying was there with one million people (i was up the front). def leppard played about 2:30 in the afternoon which is strange to see a band like this in daylight! funniest though - was will smith (local philly boy made good) doing boom boom shake the room or whatever that song was - 10 years after it was cool.

Fuji wasn't a hit the first time, and it didn't do any better this time round.

That said, I don't know if I'll miss Fuji or the Toyota team more... I'll probably miss Fuji more - it did have its highlights in two years of racing there.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)29/05/2009 at 07:39

How can you say that? Fuji was a horrible waste of space and everyone hated it. Suzuka is one of the best tracks ever made and they tossed it off the calendar for THAT ...thing!

It says a lot to me that the track is most famous for its scenery.

I would miss Toyota, but I'm not sure I've forgiven them for inflicting Ralf on my life for so long.

Good riddance to both. Toyota are run in the same corporate manner as the Gondas I hated... watch someone take over that team and start winning too!

Ah ok. So he's too lazy for you?

Pretty much. If I want to read the opinions of F1 fans, I'll read them here, or on a fan run blog.

I also found his tone in 07 and 08 very 'oh Lewis is so great' and then this year he seemed to switch to 'Lewis is rubbish, Jenson is so great' like some kind of glory-seeking idiot, although if you asked me to provide examples I bet I'd fail. It's just the vibe I got.

In other news, the Australian Grand Prix Corp has switched their website to 2010 mode, and judging by the dates that tie up nicely with UK daylight savings, we might be in for a twilight race again.

    I hate saying goodbye to Megan but I love to see her go {Comment #7}

Is this a good time to admit that I haven't put up my calender due to lack of wall space (the non-bookshelf element of which is taken up by a map of Silverstone circa 2002 and a poster of the 2009 F1 season)?

  • Alianora La Canta29/05/2009 at 09:44

    What is the point in having another 3 season agreement. They need to find a long term answer not another temporary half-baked version. {Comment #29}

I don't think the FIA is capable of doing anything other than half-baked at the moment. As such, having a tide-over agreement until Max's (hopeful) removal from office is probably for the best.

I notice they still haven't found an arrangement that prevents the entire capped element of the field from being disqualified, which is not the most hopeful sign for the future...

At least the implications of the detail suggest that the FIA has finally condescenced to be bound by a Concorde Agreement.

  • Alianora La Canta29/05/2009 at 10:01

    Now that’s news to me! Did anybody else know about this? {Comment #401}

Fuji's being trying to get out of doing the Grand Prix for quite some time because of the expense - hence why it allowed Suzuka back on the calender on an alternate-year basis in 2008. I don't think this is necessarily an indicator of anything beyond Fuji's realisation that it will never replace Suzuka in the hearts of the Japanese people.

The bigger note in that entry is:

is it not coincidental that toyota are rumoured to be exiting f1, and suddenly the track they own today appears to have pulled out of the calendar?

just reading the f1.com site - the last place the good news goes up, but the first to do a poll on bernie's medal idea.

Sutil apparently is a good piano player. not the normal f1 driver hobby i guess.

    How can you hate Def Leppard?! Or is admitting my love of hair metal and power ballads a bad thing? {Comment #405}

Since I am currently listening to and enjoying "Heavy Fuel" by Dire Straits, I'd have to say power ballads are a good thing :) (even if Dire Straits are not, technically speaking, metal of any description - but I like Bon Jovi as well, which is a hair band).

Would a dual-boot operating system be better (I believe there is a method of doing that for the Apple now)? Then you could have the PC operating system for The Sims 3 and a Mac for everything else without going to the trouble of needing two computers.

Since "me" is very good at the technical side, I'm sure he could be persuaded to set up the Mac that way if possible.

It seems strange that Heikki doesn't have one. Oh well, I suppose not everyone wants a major presence on the internet - Heikki would probably settle for being a major presence in F1 :)

  • Lukeh29/05/2009 at 10:19

Morning guys. I'm a bit at peace at the moment, just got out of my exam. i would be an honest statement to say I made up a lot more in that than I actually knew, but I think everyone will have done really badly because of how shambolic the module has been treated. even this exam will be questioned, as our lecturers confirmed that Plan 9 would not be a revisable subject yet it was part of the 2nd question in the exam, so another bit of a shambles really...

I'm just happy it's over until october now. This whole operating systems module was a joke though, there were a few other subjects we didn't even get to study because of how badly it had been run.

    But I'm strangely happy... :)

Hey Lukeh - that often happens sadly. The exam paper has to be lodged early before the lecturers are sure what the topics will be for the remaining part of the course. we had a Q2 surprise once as well - fortunately reading time was good for staring around at everyone else and realising that i was not alone in having no clue what the question even meant. they just disregarded that question - but didn't bother to tell us that before the exam. people are nice.

    Who do you think won’t be invited into the F1 paddock? {Comment #534}

Depends. If McLaren step out of line again before the formal entry is announced, I can see their three-race ban being turned into removal from the 2010 list.

If McLaren behaves, but someone else seriously annoys the FIA (and I mean seriously), then that team will be out.

Otherwise, I think one of Campos, Lola and Prodrive will be out. None of them has an F1-spec factory at this moment and they will all struggle with the financial and bureaucratic requirements of the task. If I had to pick one to be dropped, I'd say Campos, but it could as easily be done at random given the FIA.

Most likely, this scenario won't occur on the grounds of Toyota conserving its core strength by withdrawing from F1.

  • Alianora La Canta29/05/2009 at 10:33

    Am I to understand that we have an upper limit for 2010? how flexible is it? {Comment #543}

The upper limit is 13 teams (up from 12, which has been the rarely-pushed limit since 1998). It's not really flexible because the FIA doesn't appear to have any plans for the overspill squads apart from telling them they haven't got in. Certainly there's no regulatory latitude to let them in with the current ruleset.

    http://willthef1journo.wordpress.com/2009/05/29/todays-the-day/

Will Buxton's take on D-Day. FTA:

Let’s imagine for a moment that we are in Paul Jackson’s position ... With just over 12 hours until the deadline for 2010 F1 entries shuts, there is absolutely no guarantee that the regulations as they stand today will stand by the time you enter the sport in 2010. Furthermore you don’t even know if Formula 1 as you know it, the Formula 1 with Ferrari, McLaren, Renault etc, will exist next year. You’ve had your entry mocked by the grandees of the sport and the very suggestion that you might consider putting an entry forward for Formula 1 cast aside as belittling the great name of the sport by some of those team bosses who would be your peers next year.

    A very good article BTW...

70bhp more from the Merc with 1000 less RPM and more drivable as well.

Thats shows how poor the Honda was.

They never got to grips with the V8 - Honda produced a 1000bhp V10 for the final V10 race iirc.

didn't see it. what did they say?

we know the honda's didn't work in bahrain two years in a row because if the heat, so the fact mercedes are better was always a given

i still think honda haven't fully gone, they just needed a way around the problem of homologating a lemon.

Greggs in general are too genius for my liking. They just make food far too nice!

I have just realised our dictionary is in alphabetical order but not within each letter. Question is, should I fix it, or does that just sum up Sidepodcast?

Lots of people on Twitter thinking that it's already first come, first served. Just to make sure I have it right, 10 spots are reserved already for the 10 current teams, right? They only lose that reservation if they don't file by midnight?

  • Flibster29/05/2009 at 13:18

Proving difficult. Most their racing happens in August...

Not exactly. On MWM Nick Daman said that if there were too many applicants, those already in the sport would get automatic entry. It's the newbies and latecomers that have to be considered...

that was my belief, but even then i think the teams could lodge a good excuse if done in reasonable time, and still get a spot.

Because Max reckons that new teams need the leadup time to arrange finance, sponsorship and engines. He has a point, but because it's Max we all know it's just his silly politicking again...

  • Journeyer29/05/2009 at 13:22

    max.

the newbies need to know now if they'll be accepted into F1 2010. if the FIA wait until the traditional november date, the newbies won't have any time to prepare.

Well, they have entered. If Japan decide to do a Honda and pull out in November though...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)29/05/2009 at 13:45

Surely the make up of the competitors is a commercial decsion rather than a policing one

Not at all. It is the job of the rulemakers to evaluate suitable applicants under the entry conditions for 2010...

  • Journeyer29/05/2009 at 13:45

Well, they have entered. If Japan decide to do a Honda and pull out in November though…

Why not do it now? It'll cost them more (financially and reputationally) if they do it in November.

  • me29/05/2009 at 13:46

"The basis of the 2010 regulations will be the current 2009 regulations, amended in accordance with proposals that FOTA has submitted to the FIA."

ouch. max has lost this one big time.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)29/05/2009 at 13:47

Why not do it now? It'll cost them more (financially and reputationally) if they do it in November.

Ask Honda that question? If Toyota continue to lose money, they may have to save face - especially if the boardmakers resign...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)29/05/2009 at 13:47

"The basis of the 2010 regulations will be the current 2009 regulations, amended in accordance with proposals that FOTA has submitted to the FIA."

ouch. max has lost this one big time.

Unless the FIA decides that conditional entries are unacceptable and declines them...

  • me29/05/2009 at 13:49

Unless the FIA decides that conditional entries are unacceptable and declines them...

true. i don't get this line:

"The Concorde Agreement is signed by all parties before 12th June 2009"

presumably that doesn't include new entries?

  • Journeyer29/05/2009 at 13:49

Bunch of pussies....all this posturing and demanding that the FOTA were doing just strikes me as childish toy-throwing now.

Hmmm... I actually disagree with this tweet, considering we have this:

“The basis of the 2010 regulations will be the current 2009 regulations, amended in accordance with proposals that FOTA has submitted to the FIA.”

and, yes, Mr. C, Max has indeed lost this one. With LDM on the other side, I'm not surprised. :)

do note: NOTHING in the FOTA statement even hints at a budget cap. which alludes to JA's hint that the FOTA statement wouldn't even bring up a glide path for the cap.

out of interest, does the concorde agreement offer teams the chance to set regulations for the future or something? why the instance to sign?

  • Lukeh29/05/2009 at 13:54

I think fakerossbrawn sums it up in why we've had to wait until now for the announcement of the teams agreement

2010 Entry submitted! A bit last minute, but we had difficulty deciding on what clip-art to use...

  • me29/05/2009 at 13:54

  • Nick29/05/2009 at 13:54

Why? It's not the job of the promoter to decide who is fit to participate...

FOM aren't just the promoter, they effectively own the right to commercially exploit the sport. If they decide where the series races, Isn't that the same as choosing who takes part?

  • Journeyer29/05/2009 at 13:55

out of interest, does the concorde agreement offer teams the chance to set regulations for the future or something? why the instance to sign?

i'm guessing it has something to do with the Formula One Commission... commercial concerns must be a consideration too.

  • Nick29/05/2009 at 13:58

I expect FOTA want FOTA + Bernie and the FIA to be the FOC rather than that 1 team per country rubbish they had before

I expect FOTA want FOTA + Bernie and the FIA to be the FOC rather than that 1 team per country rubbish they had before

That'll do for now. As we are rushing headlong into the weekend, let us know if you have any exciting plans, and equally let us know if you don't. I will see you in the comments.

We have a long weekend in Denmark, so I plan to have a drink at work, and go to the Copenhagen Samba Carnival tomorrow with my wife. The rest of the weekend I'll be lazy and plan to blog and catch up on racing videos...

Man, you're cynical today! Remember they want to be in F1 but they got stuffed by the rules last time. Dave Richards has said in many interviews that he wants to be in F1!

    Mr. C

Just wanted to let you know that the RSS feeds are working fine now - thanks!

    I do have an observation/comment.

The feed entitled 'Sidepodcast: Your Weekly F1 Podcast' feeds all the content.

The feed entitled 'Sidepodcast: Your Weekly F1 Fix' only feeds Podcast notifications.

To my horribly logical engineers way of thinking about things, this is back to front... oh, and inclusion of 'weekly' doesn't really tie to the daily fixes you give us...

Hmmm - that sounds very critical -- it's not meant to be, just trying to help!

  • Bootneck29/05/2009 at 15:19

They're saying $80 next reducing to $40 2011. I feel quiet chuffed with myself coz 3 weeks ago I was saying that the teahms might go for $40m per car next year but not $40m total. 2010 teams to be confirmed 12th june, that ll be a great day, I get to find out whose racing next year then go to see Oasis in cardiff. Roll on 12th june. PS All sidepodcast fans etc are invited to a sidepod meet at Silverstone golf club from wed 17th onwards, we'll be there about 06:30 til noon 22nd.

    Morning / afternoon all.

We were holding a sort of contest for new tagline submissions, but didn’t hit on the right one and it sort of died off.

    My submissions:

...where the chats are always more entertaining than the racing.

...is my favoriate website. - God.

...may not be entering the championship for 2010 but thinking about it for 2011.

...bringing together the world of F1, one listener at a time.

...because we are the only reasonable voice in F1 at the moment.

The current Lotus cars factory tour. It's interesting from a manufacturing perspective. May well see Tesla's, Evora's, 2-11's, Exige's, Europa's in various stages of prodution.

i'm 50/50 on that one, happy to be swayed either way.

will start a wiki thread and do a post hopefully in a couple of hours. cheers for sorting sir.

    more wise words from will:

"...the teams have used the clever option of entering FOTA as a block so that if any conditions are not met, F1 immediately loses nine teams. It also means that if the FIA wants a full grid, it can’t possibly drop one of the existing teams in favour of a new team, as the block entry is for all nine teams as a unit."

Presumably the next step is for the FIA to say if they accept the block entry based on these terms...

  • Flibster29/05/2009 at 17:02

mmm. you think campos meta1 may be sweating a little after hearing that?

I think that many of the new teams will be a little worried by that.

They could standardise a lot of the parts of the cars and still allow them to be distinguishable while reducing the costs substantially.

Standard element for the front wing and a standard element for the rear wing. Also, single element wings only - none of the Mclaren 6 element stylings.

Standardised brake discs and pads, standardised uprights.

Allow other teams to buy chassis, gearboxes for a reasonable cost.

Hell, even bring back buying complete cars.

  • TJR29/05/2009 at 17:04

yup. and also bernie, as it would appear he need to be a signatory on the concorde agreement.

It would be great, I think, if this was accepted, but I have a suspicion that Max won't let FOTA have the last word. Even if he/the FIA are agreeable to the content, he will want to be seen to be getting the team's to make further compromise.

that would be kinda boring to look at though.

Endplates and supports wouldn't be standardised.

The front wings have standard parts already, admittadly only about 1ft of standard part - just make the full wing span from a single part.

Although - if they want to keep moveable wings, allow the moveable part as a second element.

  • me29/05/2009 at 17:17

Right - Just called a mate.

Factory tours are only done on Wednesdays - £20 per person.

Get to look around Body bonding, paint, Chassis, final assembly and quality control.

Luckilly - the dates we have for Classic Team Lotus are on Wednesdays. :D

although the combined total for both tours for two of us, would be £100. i may have trouble selling that idea to christine. anyone else have thoughts or preferences?

That is no suprise since all the teams are now entering into the budget cap agreement for 2011 and beyond. Then again, I still don't know how the heck they are going to regulate people' pocket books. More room for the FIA to be nosey in my opinion.

So the drive was nice, but stock takes are never fun right? guess it depends who you work with?

The drive was very nice - on the way there I took the country lanes, amazing views..

The stocktake was as rubbish as ever. Half of it is in a warm, stuffy store room, the other half is in the food production area which is permanently chilled... although I have to say it was a welcome relief at first..

First one is the Potash Lane buildings where Classic Team Lotus is based.

The second is the best sandwich shop in Norfolk, and possibly the whole of East Anglia.

  • Pat W29/05/2009 at 19:13

is it not coincidental that toyota are rumoured to be exiting f1, and suddenly the track they own today appears to have pulled out of the calendar?

Not in the slightest. Honda pulled out of F1 for years and we still had Suzuka.

  • Journeyer29/05/2009 at 19:14

Not in the slightest. Honda pulled out of F1 for years and we still had Suzuka.

And we're even assuming that either of them is leaving, when it seems both are intent to stay...

Not in the slightest. Honda pulled out of F1 for years and we still had Suzuka.

Suzuka makes a profit though iirc.

Fuji doesn't *especially after a massively expensive rebuild of it*

    Suzuka also rocks. :D

i'd rather toyota than lola, any day of the week.

Let's take both and argue it on the track. Manufacturer vs specialist.

If not - Down by the Theatre Royal

Or - find a pub.. At least thats easy in Norwich. Used to have 365 pubs, 53 churches and 2 cathedrals.

it's worth saying that the plan is to randomise them (an idea stolen from sofaf1) in the header. so we cannot have to many.

And Last.fm! It was never the same after they moved them to tiny writing at the bottom of the page.

  • Pat W29/05/2009 at 19:53

Because there's some great views from the top.

I might have to do that then. The only photos I've seen show a field with some people looking at cars turning around.

    They're pretty things.

The Fully enclosed one is the 119C

The Yellow one is the 119B *first soapbox car capable to do 200mph on a 45° incline! - how they discovered this I don't want to contemplate*

The Green open cockpit is the 119.

Hell, even bring back buying complete cars.

Someone mentioned that the other day, I can't remember where I saw it. Either here or Twitter, I think. They could bring in a supplier limit as with engines, e.g. Team X can only provide their chassis to 2 other teams.

  • Scott Woodwiss29/05/2009 at 20:05

This little 10 year old girl was in the middle of singing and, I missed it but, she must have gone wrong because she just froze up and started crying. Her mum came on and gave her a hug and she was asking through tears to start again, but the producer said there wasn't enough time. Simon, however, did say they will find time for her to have another go. At least he has a heart, unlike some people it seems.

I'll allow you to compare it to me watching golf.

Ah but watching golf is good

Well...true, it is more fun to play. But i like watching the masters because theres someone called "Boo Weakly" and i just imagine someone going

"booooo" in a really quiet voice

    :D

  • Nick29/05/2009 at 21:05

Interestingly it sounds like FOTA put in a single application on behalf of its 9 current members, rather than them doing their own individual ones.

  • Alianora La Canta29/05/2009 at 21:06

    i’m confused why they’d be allowed to create a new engine, if they already have one homologated to the current regs? if that were possible, why don’t other engine manufactures do the same?? {Comment #565}

A new engine entrant can make a new engine, but it has to be homologated to fit within the performance parameters of current F1 engines before use. This right is granted only upon entry to the series, so to get the option an engine supplier would have to withdraw for a year and then re-enter.

Apart from astronauts arriving at the space station, FOTA teams putting n conditional entries, Prodrive and Lola entering have I missed anything?

We were invaded by Hungarians apparently.

Nope, I didn't get it either.

Go and look at the contest with the Hungaroroing's comments, and how the Hungaroring did against the Nurburgring, and see for yourself.

Yes I saw that. Good news.

    395 votes for Hungary?

  • Alianora La Canta29/05/2009 at 21:09

    I have just realised our dictionary is in alphabetical order but not within each letter. Question is, should I fix it, or does that just sum up Sidepodcast? {Comment #602}

Whichever feels best for you :) We are a pretty chaotic bunch which demands order at the oddest of occasions.

  • Scott Woodwiss29/05/2009 at 21:09

    What? But....but...the Nurburgring... :(

  • Jon Waldock29/05/2009 at 21:10

  • Steven Roy29/05/2009 at 21:12

It is way better than the Hungaroring. It is not a great track but it is not a bore like Hungaroring is

    after 2.5 years of sidepodcast, i finally have a fan. sadly it was on sale in argos for a tenner. {Comment #625}

  • Jon Waldock29/05/2009 at 21:12

yes i know that, but we're not voting on the Nordschleife, we're voting on the small rubbish version

  • Steven Roy29/05/2009 at 21:13

Hmm, the history? Nordschleife ring a bell at all?

Utterly irrelevant. We are only talking about the southern loop as used for the GP. No marks forr being close to a good track

  • Scott Woodwiss29/05/2009 at 21:13

It is way better than the Hungaroring. It is not a great track but it is not a bore like Hungaroring is

Hungaroring's been described often like Monaco. Enough said, really.

  • Jon Waldock29/05/2009 at 21:15

Hungaroring's been described often like Monaco. Enough said, really.

but the last few races have been pretty good, it depends why your voting for it, i'm not voting for a track because of the races's it has on it. Monaco has rubbish races but it still won by over 200 votes

  • Nick29/05/2009 at 21:17

yes i know that, but we're not voting on the Nordschleife, we're voting on the small rubbish version

People seem to treat Indy differently, i suppose that shares some of the same track, but people talk of the history and it being the home of US motorsport

  • Alianora La Canta29/05/2009 at 21:18

    Lots of people on Twitter thinking that it’s already first come, first served. Just to make sure I have it right, 10 spots are reserved already for the 10 current teams, right? They only lose that reservation if they don’t file by midnight? {Comment #659}

The trouble is it has to be a valid entry and I have a horrible feeling FOTA's contravenes Article 2.1. This regulation obliges that all entrants "observe all the provisions as supplemented or amended of... ...the present Sporting Regulations together referred to as “the Regulations”. An entry demanding a change in the 2010 Sporting Regulations provisions would contradict this.

The FIA is obliged to reject the FOTA entry whether it wants to or not. Since it isn't revealing who succeeded until June 12th, the deadline for the FOTA teams to have guaranteed entries will have passed :(

  • Scott Woodwiss29/05/2009 at 21:19

but the last few races have been pretty good, it depends why your voting for it, i'm not voting for a track because of the races's it has on it. Monaco has rubbish races but it still won by over 200 votes

Monaco's popular because, well, it's Monaco! How can you not love it? To be fair, the only special thing about Hungary's race is that it's the only one in Eastern Europe. That's all I can think of anyway.

  • Steven Roy29/05/2009 at 21:19

but the last few races have been pretty good, it depends why your voting for it, i'm not voting for a track because of the races's it has on it. Monaco has rubbish races but it still won by over 200 votes

Monaco is a challenge to the driver although it is less than it was. Hungaroring is just dull.

  • Alianora La Canta29/05/2009 at 21:20

    How come the deadline was made so early anyways? It’s usually on November after the season ends unless I’m thinking of another deadline… {Comment #666}

It was going to be at the end of July to give the new entrants a chance to build their resources before entering the car-building phase. However, on May 9, Max decided to make it this week only in an effort to pressurise the current teams into re-signing on his terms.

  • Jon Waldock29/05/2009 at 21:21

Monaco is a challenge to the driver although it is less than it was. Hungaroring is just dull.

Really? I'm totally the opposite, the only corners that are a challenge in the Nurburgring is hte second of the S bends on hte second half of the circuit.

  • Alianora La Canta29/05/2009 at 21:29

    Are conditional applications acceptable? {Comment #699}

In theory, if FOTA had only made the Concorde Agreement a condition, it could have been accepted subject to the FIA's preferences (which would have put FOTA's entry on a similar footing to everyone else's).

With the condition regarding the regulations for 2010, the entry is technically in breach of Article 2.1 and thus theoretically unacceptable to the FIA.

  • Alianora La Canta29/05/2009 at 21:32

    Surely the make up of the competitors is a commercial decsion rather than a policing one {Comment #708}

It's only partly commercial. The likelihood that the team will be capable of complying with its obligations to the FIA and to other interested parties is also involved. Also, the FIA is technically the series organiser (as distinct from its owner) and it falls to the series organiser to do entry approvals in other motor sport series.

  • Steven Roy29/05/2009 at 21:33

With the condition regarding the regulations for 2010, the entry is technically in breach of Article 2.1 and thus theoretically unacceptable to the FIA.

It has to be illegal to enter on condition that the rules change. In effect they have not entered

  • Scott Woodwiss29/05/2009 at 21:41

The on track rules in Race Pro are unbelieveable sometimes. I've just had to quit out a 16 lap public online race at Valencia because some arse shoved me off the track and as a result I cut a corner due to not being able to slow down enough and I got a drivethrough! So I get punished for being the victim. Un-friggin-believeable.

  • Nick29/05/2009 at 21:44

Sounds very realistic, were you driving a silver car perchance?

  • Alianora La Canta29/05/2009 at 21:48

    out of interest, does the concorde agreement offer teams the chance to set regulations for the future or something? why the instance to sign? {Comment #726}

The Concorde Agreement sets out the basic obligations of the regulatory, commercial and competitive bodies in the sport. This offers a framework upon which all else, including regulations, can be worked. A bit like a national constitution does for those countries that have one. It offers stability and an assurance that the regulatory pranks in which the FIA have engaged in the last few months will cease, or at least be theoretically punishable by a court.

  • Lukeh29/05/2009 at 21:51

    It has to be illegal to enter on condition that the rules change. In effect they have not entered {Comment #1090}

    Well summarised, Steven :)

The difference is that this form of non-entry could theoretically result in punishment through the courts. In practise, I think Max will get his "revenge"* a bit more directly than that...

    * - I'm not sure what the right word to describe it is, but this was the closest I could come up with.

  • Nick29/05/2009 at 21:52

You know, I'm still stunned at the Hungarorings's triumph tonight :D

It seems that a lot of people voted on that one. It will be interesting to see if they keep voting or if they show up again when the Hungaroring apears in the second round

It's the same with TOCA 3 whilst on a timed lap...on certain tracks if you run onto the rumble strips it will cancel your lap. boo

    that’s interesting.

Gives Williams a better negotiating position with Bernie

Ah, I see. No, one of the pilots broke his wrist and couldn’t fly. Therefore, I couldn’t watch.

But there are 10 Red Arrows so that there is a spare. Normally the spare guy Red 10 helps with commentary

we saw them three times that summer and every time, 8 planes plus a commentator.

Cant they commentate while they fly? Sheesh

That's ridiculous. All there formations are based on there being 9 of them

i should point out they happily turned up at the silverstone gp with 8 planes, but itv brushed over it.

Couldn't James Allen have commentated on them there, possibly in his sideshow style?

  • me30/05/2009 at 01:13

this is what i said on the subject back in '07:

"For me, the highlight of the weekend will be finding out if the Red Arrows manage to arrive with all nine pilots at the controls. After a benign domestic accident left us with an 8 plane display at Goodwood, a full field would be appreciated this Sunday!"

    i was to be disappointed.

I must admit to having a thing about symmetry too. It would bug me. It's not like the plane crashed or there is no-one else in the RAF who can fly a Hawk
